Education

Ihave a close friend who teaches at a junior school in a less than salubrious area. It's fair to say he has a lot of difficult students, but what amazes me about him is that he never moans about the job.

He's part of a close circle of friends I have stayed in touch with since senior school. I always felt he was the cleverest of the bunch, but others have gone into industries that pay well and, today, are pretty high up the pecking order. This friend, though, earns considerably less, but when we get together he's the only one who doesn't lament about the job he has been lumbered with.

I find his stories of getting through to pupils really inspiring, and I truly see the fire burning bright in his eyes. On these get togethers we do talk about some of our old teachers, and boy did we have some eccentric ones – but they all left their mark on us.

That's the power of a good teacher and I am forever in awe of what they do. I won't get all political here with the current issues and strikes that are happening in the UK, but we need to look after teachers. They are the ones who will shape the future generation and it's tougher than ever to get through to the younger generation.

So, this month, we have produced an education special to highlight the great work by schools and teachers. I salute them all.

Following a sell-out run in 2021, Told by an Idiot are taking their five-star production, Charlie and Stan, back on the road for 2023. This 80-minute jam-packed show is non-stop entertainment, and tells the true(ish) story of the greatest comedy double act that ‘almost’ was; Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel (of Laurel and Hardy fame). From their early days in showbiz sharing a stage, Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel went on to become two of the biggest stars of the age. Stan Laurel, however, is not mentioned in Chaplin’s autobiography once. So, what happened? mercurytheatre.co.uk

NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Essex-born popstar and presenter Olly Murs on his seventh album, his impending nuptials, and managing criticism

It’s gonna be brilliant, I’m excited to be heading on my arena tour, travelling up and down the country, especially Colchester… it’s gonna be awesome,” Witham-born singer Olly Murs enthuses as we discuss his upcoming UK tour following the release of Marry Me, his first album in over four years.

Finding time to catch up with the 38-year-old chart-topping artist hasn’t been easy. Olly has been promoting the album non-stop and the day we chat he’s heading to Cardi to meet fans. However, despite the hectic schedule, it doesn’t show in his chirpy tone, famously cheeky laugh, and candid responses.

The singer is in fine fettle and ready to take on the world as he launches his seventh album, which was written and recorded with writing duo David Stewart and Jessica Agombar, who experienced global success writing the hit song Dynamite for Korean

group BTS – a number one in over 100 countries. It is already paying o with the album reaching number one in the UK charts.

“My favourite song on the album has to be Let Me Just Say – it’s all about Amelia so it’s really special,” reveals Olly. The last track on his album isn’t the only song dedicated to his fiancée Amelia Tank. The high energy tune I Found Her demonstrates the life-changing impact of love in his life. He proposed to Amelia in 2022 during a trip to Cornwall.

I can’t help but wonder if an Essex wedding complete with an Olly Murs soundtrack is on the cards. “Yes,” he confirms, “we have already booked a venue in Essex for this summer. Amelia is from Plymouth, so I managed to get my way with that one,” he laughs.

As for playing his own music on the big day, he shakes his head. “No, I don’t think so. I can get away with some things, but I won’t get away with playing my music at the wedding,” he chuckles.

Keeping his wedding venue firmly under wraps, Olly continues: “We love it here in Essex and I hope we’re here to stay. Anything can change but we’re settled, and Amelia likes it. We’d love to have kids here.

“To be honest I never really left Essex – despite having a flat in London, I’ve always been in and out of Essex. There’s no place like home – where all my friends and family are,” he adds.

Growing up in Witham holds fond memories for Olly, who now lives with Amelia, and their dog Missy, near Chelmsford. “I always remember going to North Weald Market at the weekend. Life was simple and I played a lot of football after school.” And what about today? “Amelia and I love a Sunday roast dinner so it’s either a trip to the Dog & Pickle in Ongar or Ashlyns Farm in Epping,” he says. “I also love walking along the beach with Amelia and Missy – either Frinton-on-Sea or Walton-

on-the-Naze in Colchester is just lovely.”

Olly found fame after finishing second in the 2009 series of the X Factor. He went on to score four UK number one albums – now five – and four UK number one singles. He moved into presenting the X Factor alongside Caroline Flack, appeared as a coach on The Voice UK, and has just wrapped up filming on the next series of ITV’s talent show Starstruck

“There are so many highlights in my career, it’s tough to think of one. I am very lucky and blessed. My first ever number one was the most amazing achievement, it was life-changing for me so will always be a huge moment in my career.”

With all the highs of fame and success come the inevitable lows of social media criticism. Olly remains grounded despite social media backlash over the lyrics on one of his new album tracks, I Hate it When You’re Drunk. Critics labelled the song “cruel”, but Olly defends the song as a light-hearted take from a sober person’s point of view.

“Most people I have spoken to find the song relatable and fun – it was never a dig at my partner, it’s not even about Amelia!

The song was written about eight years ago. Amelia was fine with it! I played her the song a year ago and she found it funny. We wanted it to feel like a song anyone can relate to with friends and partners. It’s not meant to be horrible, and Amelia took it well. She was upset by the criticism. It’s just a fun song. I am ba ed by the response.

“I am used to criticism; I’ve been in this business for a long time,” adds Olly. “Not everyone will love what you’re creating. But it’s been upsetting to see some of the comments, it’s not what I expected,” he admits.

“When people start digging you out as a person, that is tough. People don’t know me personally and for them to think that this song is how I am as a partner to Amelia is

ridiculous. People close to me know who I am. “I understand if people are o ended, but to judge my character? It is what it is! We move on. I’m not gonna let these people drag me down or hide in a corner, I’ll crack on. There are worse songs that have been released in the last few years!”

As our interview draws to a close, I ask Olly what he thinks of once being described as a national treasure and what the future holds. “I’ll take that! It’s lovely to hear it, but I don’t look at myself in that way. I love entertaining and will continue doing it till I die or until I can’t.”

Marry Me is out now, and Olly Murs will be heading to Colchester Castle Park on 27 August. Find out more at ollymurs.com

This LITTLE GIRL

Absolutely goes behind the scenes at Matilda The Musical

Even as an adult, I’m excited to meet the cast of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Matilda The Musical. The show has been playing in the West End since 2011 and its unforgettable songs are played on repeat in countless households. There’s hardly been an empty seat in the house since it opened, and now a new film is attracting even more fans – because it’s a timeless show that people of all ages return to again and again for its anarchic spirit and unique style.

Clearly, the show has a special energy behind the scenes as well. A new cast change brings Rakesh Boury and Amy Ellen Richardson to the roles of Mr and Mrs Wormwood, and they were both fans before they’d been cast. “I saw the orginal at Stratford and I remember thinking, there’s nothing else like this. I laughed, I cried,” says Richardson. We’re in the theatre’s Circle Bar in the afternoon, where tables are already set up for the children’s supper later. For them it’s a tight schedule – they spend the day at school, then rush to the theatre for the evening performance. “It’s a well-oiled machine,” says Boury.

There are currently three teams of children who perform in turns, and Boury and Richardson are blown away by their talent. “They’re so unbelievably good,” says Boury, who has four-year-old twin daughters who are deep into their Matilda fan phase. Richardson has been acting since she was 10, so seeing the children on stage reflects her own life. “What an experience it is for them,” she says. “And they’re so good that they make you up your game.”

For a long-running show, it’s unusual to have so many of the original team still involved, but Matilda The Musical is very much a passion project for pretty much

everybody. Writer Dennis Kelly, composer and lyricist Tim Minchin, director Matthew Warchus, musical director Laurie Perkins and choreographer Peter Darling have all been hands-on since the beginning, and the show adapts to each new wave of actors. “We were encouraged to bring our own interpretations to the roles,” says Richardson. “We do feel that they’re our roles, which is great when you’re taking on an existing role,” says Boury. “The team genuinely wanted us to find our own versions, which is great – I’ve done shows where they insist on you doing everything a certain way. But every Wormwood there’s ever been has been their own.”

Plainly, they both love the show and feel lucky to be part of it. “We’ve done 140 shows but we still feel like the new cast,” says Boury. And the energy comes from the audience too. “When I finish work, 1200 people applaud me. That feeling can keep you going. Just this week there was a 40-year-old man in a Matilda The Musical t-shirt standing up at the end, bawling his eyes out. It’s the power of the arts, isn’t it.” He’s right – this show stays with everyone it touches. Long may it continue.

Why we love… COLCHESTER

Declared Britain's very first city by order of the Emperor Claudius and a former capital of Roman Britain, Colchester’s rich history dates back over 2,000 years. Awarded modern city status as part of the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee, Colchester is now also one of Britain’s newest cities, a lively, modern destination o ering family friendly visitor attractions, cutting edge culture and fantastic places to eat, drink and shop.

The compact, historic city centre is perfect for exploring on foot. Join one of the regular guided tours leaving from the Visitor Information Centre on the ground floor of Hollytrees Museum, or pick up a map or self-guided heritage trail and explore at your own pace.

First stop is Colchester Castle, a massive Norman keep built on the foundations of a Roman temple destroyed by Queen Boudica. Inside is a modern museum housing internationally important collections and exciting interactive displays telling Colchester’s story from pre-history to the

Civil War Siege. Join a tour to visit the Roman Vaults and take in the views from the top of the building. A new exhibition, Gladiators: A Day At the Roman Games, opens in July 2023 and will take visitors back in time for a thrilling immersive experience.

Other historic highlights include the Roman City Walls, the oldest and longest in Britain; the Roman Circus Visitor Centre where you can learn more about the only Roman chariot racing track discovered in the UK; the evocative ruins of medieval St Botolph’s Priory; and the Dutch Quarter. The latter is a picturesque network of narrow streets, found just o the bustling High Street, but quite di erent in character. Still a residential area, it’s packed full of hidden historic gems – peek through a window at the ruins of the Roman Theatre, or spot the plaque on the house where the authors of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star once lived. The Dutch Quarter is somewhat

confusingly named after Flemish refugees who settled in that part of Colchester in the 16th century after fleeing persecution on the continent. Skilled weavers, they invigorated the local cloth industry. Many of their weavers’ cottages still stand including Peake’s House, which is actually three cottages in one. Now managed by the Landmark Trust, it is ideally located for those wanting a self-catering break right in the very centre of the city.

Of course, Colchester’s not all about the past, although you will find it crops up even in the most modern settings. For example Firstsite, a glorious golden landmark building by international architect Raphael Vinoly housing a contemporary art gallery, cinema, shop and café, which has at its heart a Roman mosaic, re-laid in the spot it was found. Opening at Firstsite this February is a new exhibition curated by Sarah Lucas, one of Britain’s most celebrated artists, who

came to prominence as a leading light in the generation of Young British Artists (YBAs).

BIG WOMEN will showcase work by leading female artists including Sarah herself. The exhibition promises a wealth of diverse artworks to enjoy – and a few surprises too. Culture seekers will find lots of other opportunities to indulge their habit on a visit to Colchester, particularly if you are staying overnight in one of the city’s centrally located boutique hotels and venturing out for an evening of entertainment. From high end productions at the newly refurbished Mercury Theatre, an eclectic mix of folk, jazz, comedy and more at Colchester Arts Centre, to art cinema at the Curzon, there is a lot to choose from. Meanwhile the wider cultural events calendar makes the most of the City’s unique spaces – from open air theatre and big-name concerts in Castle Park, to intimate classical recitals in ancient churches.

In 2023 the city is celebrating its new status with a fantastic programme of special events across the year, including a free weekend long re-enactment by the English Civil War Society on the 19-20 August commemorating the Siege of Colchester in 1648. Expect battles, executions (!), living history encampments and more.

In between all that you will need to find time to eat, drink and maybe indulge in a little retail therapy. Colchester’s city centre itself is full of fantastic places to eat and drink, whether it’s a pit stop for some fabulous street food at the regular Charter and Farmer’s Markets or a long lunch in luxurious surroundings. For the latter try GreyFriars Hotel (also great for posh afternoon tea). If you’re lucky there might be world famous Colchester Native Oysters on the menu, fresh from their beds.

For those intent on taking something

home from their trip, Colchester o ers high end retail at Fenwick and other big name stores combined with a host of independent shops and boutiques; don’t miss Red Lion Yard, Trinity Street, Eld Lane and Sir Issac’s Walk and finally Crouch Street (where Colchester institution Gunton's traditional delicatessen, grocer and co ee roaster is a destination in its own right).

Colchester prides itself as a destination for all ages, and the city centre and surrounding areas has a plethora of top attractions to keep everyone in the family entertained, whether you are 9 or 90, love history, splashing about in the pool, or creepy critters and majestic animals. In addition to Colchester Castle Museum, top picks in the city centre that are free to visit include Hollytrees Museum and the Natural History Museum. Then a short walk through the award-winning and scenic Victorian Castle Park and you can be aiming for a hole in one at crazy golf or zooming down the flumes at Leisure World splashing the day away.

To the north of the city centre families can take on the cycling track at the state-of-the art Colchester Sports Park, or out west be wandering around 60 acres of parkland and lakes at Colchester Zoo, one of Europe’s finest. With daily animal displays and feeding opportunities, get ready to enjoy a fun-packed day marvelling at rare species including magnificent African elephants.

Finally, beyond the immediate city centre the wider Colchester area boasts some of England’s most iconic landscapes; from the Dedham Vale immortalised by Constable, to the salt marshes and mud flats of Mersea Island, where those Colchester Native Oysters have been cultivated since Roman times.

Brimming with history, poised at the gateway to East Anglia with picturesque villages on its doorstep, and only minutes away from the coast, Colchester is the perfect destination for a well-deserved short break, day trip or family holiday.

Gluten-free QUEEN

thought I’d never eat nice food again,” the culinary blogger admits. However, refusing to live a life where she couldn’t enjoy the foods she loves, she started recreating glutenfree versions of the dishes she missed.

Initially, she posted the recipes on her blog as a way of sharing them with her family members before heading round for tea, but fast forward 10 years and GlutenFree Cuppa Tea has garnered millions of visitors and her cookbooks – How to Make Anything Gluten-Free, How to Bake Anything Gluten-Free, How to Plan Anything GlutenFree and Quick + Easy Gluten-Free – have all topped the Sunday Times Bestsellers list.

Food blogger Becky Excell has amassed over 800,000 followers on social media, has written four bestselling cookbooks and has even been dubbed the “queen of gluten-free” by none other than Nigella Lawson. However, it was on last year’s World Book Day that the 32-year-old’s success really hit home.

“I received lots of photos of young girls dressing up as me for the occasion as they went into school,” she says. “They had pink/purple hair and glasses like I do, aprons, mixing bowls and they all looked amazing! It was something I could never have expected in a million years.”

Becky, who grew up in Wivenhoe and attended Millfields Primary School and Philip MorantSchool and College in Colchester, has built an army of loyal fans over the past decade thanks to her award-winning blog

Gluten-Free Cuppa Tea, which she started in 2013 to share gluten-free recipes with family and friends. Four years earlier, while studying for a law degree at the University of Manchester, she was diagnosed with IBS and told to cut gluten from her diet.

“I found my time at university pretty stressful – both the course and being far away from home – and I started to struggle with my gut health as a result. I was bloated a lot, su ered from a lot of stomach cramps, and more and more foods seemed to trigger these symptoms,” explains Becky, who has always suspected she might be coeliac, but has never been tested for the disease because gluten has to be present in your diet to achieve an accurate result. “It means that I’ll now never know if I have coeliac disease or not unless I start eating gluten again, which I don’t intend to do as it makes me so ill.”

Overnight, Becky was faced with a completely new way of living and eating – “I

“I often get sent pictures from people all over the world who have received or bought one of my books and that’s a feeling I literally can’t describe,” she says of their success.

“My fourth book has my face on the front of it for the first time too, so that’s been even more surreal – seeing my face down the book aisle in Tesco will never seem normal.”

Becky – who lives in Colchester with her boyfriend, Mark, and miniature schnauzer, Peggy – has also picked up numerous awards, including Food Creator of the Year at the 2022 Blogosphere Awards and the 2022 Observer Food Monthly’s Best Food Personality of the Year.

“The last person to win that award was Jamie Oliver, so though I’m super overwhelmed and grateful to win anything at all, that award meant so much,” she says.

“Lots of truly inspirational figures in the food world, such as Delia Smith, also won awards that night too, so it was quite mindblowing to have my name even mentioned on the same page as someone like that.”

Becky hopes that, much like her Observer Food Monthly Food Personality of the Year predecessor Jamie Oliver, she can use her influence to help improve food choices for school children. “Things have improved so

much more for gluten-free eaters since I started a gluten-free diet in 2009. The quality of products is generally better, we have more choice in supermarkets and restaurants now have some level of understanding of glutenfree and/or gluten-free options available,” she says. “However, the price of products is still considerably inflated when compared to ‘normal products’ and it’s rare to find restaurants who fully understand the risk of cross-contamination when preparing glutenfree food. A lot of my followers regularly tell me how their gluten-free kids really struggle when it comes to school dinners too – that’s something I really hope I can help improve.”

While Becky is riding high on the wave

of gluten-free success, she’s quick to mention that things don’t always go to plan and there have been plenty of disasters with her cooking and baking along the way, particularly in the early days.

“I remember trying to make gluten-free bread by just switching the flour to glutenfree and what came out of the oven was more like a brick,” she laughs. “It was rock hard, very heavy and not edible! I’ve since realised that gluten-free bread is a science. It took many years for me to get to the point where I am now with my gluten-free bread recipes, but the end result has made all those years of disasters worth it.”

Becky Excell picks out her county go-tos

It’s still hard to find places to eat out in Essex that offer good gluten-free meals. However, Perrywood Garden Centre in Tiptree does have some good gluten-free options and got me quite obsessed with house plants too!

I spent my entire childhood living in Wivenhoe and always love being down by the water at Wivenhoe Quay – I never met my grandad, but he had a boat there. Growing up I also used to go crabbing at West Mersea every summer and I still love going for a wander there on a sunny day.

We love going to Hillhouse Wood in West Bergholt, it’s a great spot for dog walks especially in the spring when the bluebells and wild garlic are around.

vlog about other health issues, including documenting her BRCA journey. In April 2021, Becky found she had a mutation of the ‘tumour suppressor’ gene BRCA2 and an 88% chance of getting breast cancer.

“I’ve found sharing my journey really useful to me and also it seems to have helped a lot of others going through it,” says Becky, who made the life-changing decision to have a preventative double mastectomy, which was carried out at Colchester General in June last year.

Following a year of huge highs and lows, Becky says she’s looking forward to not making too many plans for the coming year other than sharing more of her gluten-free recipes and meeting more of her fans – one in particular. “I’d love to finally meet Nigella Lawson as she’s been so supportive of me,” she grins, “it would be lovely to finally be able to thank her in person!”

Becky Excell can be found posting her recipes at glutenfreecuppatea.co.uk and on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and YouTube @BeckyExcell. Her latest cookbook, Quick + Easy Gluten-Free, is published by Quadrille RRP £20

Makes 4 Brioches

Resting time: 4 h 30 min–4 h 45 min Baking time: 25 min

INGREDIENTS

• 80 g (1/2 cup/3 oz) coconut sugar

• 500 g (3 1/2 cups/1 lb 2 oz) plain (all-purpose) flour (T55)

• 220 g (1 cup/7 3/4 oz) crème fraîche

• 2 eggs + 1 beaten egg for glazing

• 15 g (1 1/2 tbsp) fresh yeast, crumbled

• 9 g (1 3/4 tsp) Guérande sea salt

• 50 g (1/4 cup/1 3/4 oz) coconut oil

• 100 g (scant 1/2 cup/3 1/2 oz) butter, softened and diced

METHOD

1 Combine all the ingredients, except the coconut oil, beaten egg for glazing and butter, in a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. Mix on low speed for 5 minutes until the dough is smooth and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Incorporate the coconut oil and butter on low speed. The dough should pull away from the sides while remaining slightly sticky. Cover the mixer bowl with a cloth and leave the dough to rise for 2 hours at room temperature.

2 On a floured work counter, divide the dough into four pieces of equal weight (about 270 g/91⁄2 oz each). Loosely shape the dough pieces into balls and place on a tray. Refrigerate for 30–45 minutes.

3 Shape the dough pieces into boules, tightening well. Transfer to a baking sheet lined with baking (parchment) paper. Cover with a cloth and prove (proof) for 2 hours at room temperature.

4 Preheat the oven to 150°C (300°F). Brush the brioches with beaten egg and bake for 25 minutes.

5 Remove the brioches from the oven, then cool on a wire rack.

STOP THE GRIND

Everybody holds stress in a di erent part of their body and for me, that place is my jaw. I’m not alone in this either: it’s estimated that around 10 million people in the UK alone struggle with Bruxism, which is the o cial term for teeth grinding. Constantly clenching your jaw can cause a menagerie of issues, including chronic headaches, face and neck pain, not to mention the damage you do to your teeth. There are several potential solutions, an increasingly popular and somewhat unexpected one being botox. I was lucky enough to pay a visit to one of the expert practitioners, Jennifer Doyle, at The Clinic in Holland Park, London, and try this out for myself. Jennifer explained how botox gets injected into a muscle in your jaw called the Masseter. It works by blocking the nerve transmission, telling the muscle to contract and therefore minimising movement. The idea is that the muscle will shrink and atrophy with time, similar to how your muscles get smaller if you stop going to the gym. She explained that the treatment will help minimise the stress I am putting on my jaw and will lessen the daily discomfort I experience as a result. It’s been a few weeks since then, and I’m pleased to say that she was right

Imbalances in gut bacteria are linked to cardiovascular disease, obesity, colorectal cancer, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis. There’s also a connection between poor mental health and poor gut health.

WHAT CAN AFFECT THE HEALTH OF THE GUT?

Your diet has a significant impact on gut health. Gut health can also be a ected by environment, stress, medications and age. A healthy gut will have more ‘good’ bacteria than ‘bad’ bacteria, and it will also have a greater diversity of gut microbiomes.

THE ROLE OF DIET

A varied and balanced diet, with plenty of dietary fibre, is linked to various health benefits and is critical to good gut health. Di erent dietary fibres perform di erent roles, from stimulating the growth of good bacteria, and slowing the absorption rate in the small intestine, which is why a varied diet is so important.

FIVE TOP TIPS

FIBRE UP FOR FRIENDLY BUGS

Di erent types of fibre play di erent roles in maintaining your gut health. Dietary fibre can be classified in several ways, whether soluble or insoluble and has prebiotic e ects. Various fibre types can have di erent e ects, so eating a combination of fibre can provide multiple benefits.

• EAT THE RAINBOW Variety is the spice of life when it comes to digestive health. Eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables ensures you include a whole range of vitamins, minerals and nutrients in your daily diet.

• NATURAL Many nutrition professionals recommend eating foods as close to their natural state as possible as a great way to support your gut. However, in this modern world that we live in, it is not always possible to eat foods in their natural state; there are some easy inclusions, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and wholefoods of animal origin, specifically unflavoured dairy, eggs, seafood, poultry and red meat.

• WATER H20 o ers so many benefits. But what is the link between adequate water consumption and good digestive health?

Water assists with the breakdown of food so that your body can absorb nutrients.

• EXERCISE Regular cardiovascular exercises such as walking and cycling can increase the heart rate, stimulating the abdomen's muscles to move digestive waste through the body.

SUNNY SIDE UP

LINDOS VILLAGE

Rhodes is one of Greece's most mythical destinations, such as the story of the god Helios bathing the island in constant sun – in fact, it is one of the sunniest destinations of the Aegean islands. The perfect place to enjoy this and more is Lindos Village, and inside we offer a first hand account of why it's ideally placed to make the most of what Rhodes has to offer.

Greek-Isle UTOPIA

Finding paradise in the Aegean's sunniest island: Rhodes

68 ABSOLUTELY magazines

ur descent into the Greek island of Rhodes took our breath away as the dramatic rugged coastline, turquoise sea and beckoning beaches unfolded beneath us. We stepped out into the warmth and dazzling blue of a perfect island day and inhaled the sweet herb-scented summer air; we had landed in paradise. Paradise with a long and fascinating history, as we were soon to discover.

Rhodes is by far the largest and historically most important of the Dodecanese islands. According to legend, it all started when Zeus divided the earth among the gods after victory against the Giants. Helios, the God of the Sun, was somehow overlooked in this process. He pleaded with Zeus that the next land to appear from the sea should be his, and Rhodes was born when a verdant island emerged from the depths. Overwhelmed

Oby happiness, Helios bathed it with his radiance as only the God of the Sun could, making the Island of the Sun forever one of the sunniest places in the Aegean. The perfect destination for a fabulous getaway.

We were headed for the ultra allinclusive adults-only Lindos Village in the south of the island, a short drive from the airport through verdant valleys and abundant olive orchards. Laid across the top of the hill overlooking the captivating sparkle of the azure bay, Lindos Village is the perfect place to absorb the warmth of this historic island. Smiling faces and chilled refreshments welcomed us before we were shown to our spacious, relaxed and comfortable room and its large balcony with more fabulous Aegean views.

The charming white-washed resort is festooned with bougainvillaea in vibrant shades of pink and purple and strategically designed to take advantage of those inspirational views no matter where you are. Days started with a tasty bu et breakfast on the terrace at Ambrosia. Food is undoubtedly a

highlight at Lindos Village, and we feasted on the delights of Rhodes, Greece and the Mediterranean, with dishes inspired by tradition using local seasonal produce. Our favourite venues were Gia Ouzaki, for its Greek cuisine with the tastiest of dips and freshest of fish and sweet, juicy tomatoes to dream of – Greek salads have never tasted so good. We also loved Ginger Root for magical dinners poolside under the twinkle of fairy lights with an incredible selection of Asian cuisine ranging from sushi to spicy curries.

In between sampling delicious treats, we whiled away sunshine days sipping exotic cocktails and the local Mythos beer on our pool loungers (the joy of all-inclusive) or hopping into the golf buggy, heading down the hill to chill on the beach and take a dip in tempting balmy waters. We enjoyed rejuvenating massages in the peace of the stylish spa and relaxed reading time in many shaded corners.

We visited historic Lindos Town, a short drive away. Said to be founded in the 10th century BC, its imposing medieval Acropolis dominates the skyline with its ancient grandeur and aweinspiring views. Picturesque sugar-cubelike houses pepper the slopes leading up to the town's quaintness with its winding lanes and pebble-paved courtyards packed with shops and charming rooftop restaurants. The beachside bars and eateries beckon, and it's the place to take to the sea for an invigorating sail, snorkel, and swim in the balmy blue. We also explored Rhodes Town, a 45-minute drive away, with the prettiest of labyrinthine streets, myriad shopping opportunities and incredible history. The town was home to the Colossus of Rhodes, a statue of Helios himself erected in 280BC, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Sadly it collapsed during the earthquake of 226BC. Though Helios’ legacy undoubtedly lives on in the warmth and the sunshine he bestowed on this beautiful island of many faces.

“Some people are opposed to painting wood, whether it’s in the shape of furniture, doors or fireplaces. I am not one of those people”

Paint is accessible and easily achievable, a tool that anyone can use with zero experience or training and where the impact far outweighs the cost and time spent. Leaving aside the usual coat of paint on the walls, there are myriad ways to update your home using this versatile medium.

First of all, almost anything can be painted. Metal, wood, tile, ceramics, floors, ceilings – there is likely to be a suitable paint product for it. There are many options for paints that are less harmful for both you and the environment, but my (admittedly unscientific) opinion is that using any paint to update a piece of furniture that would otherwise get dumped must surely outweigh the negatives. Some people are opposed to painting wood, whether it’s in the shape of furniture, doors or fireplaces. I am not one of those people. I certainly wouldn’t suggest coating a classic Ercol chair in high gloss, but there is so much brown furniture out there and charity shops and online marketplaces

are brimming with tired wooden chairs and tables of no particularly distinguished origin that can enjoy a whole new life with a lick of paint. Not everyone loves the look of bare wood, and for them there is paint.

I have a few favourite creative updates with paint. Painting old or unattractive radiators the same colour as the walls can make them disappear, while a contrasting colour will make them stand out. Paint internal doors with a pop of colour to make a statement, or link the colour palette of a series of adjoining rooms and hallways, so that the long view tells a story as well the room itself. If you’re feeling artistic, think about adding a border where the wall meets the ceiling or paint woodwork/trim a contrasting colour. Paint a panel of colour on the wall to create an interesting backdrop for a piece of art or a shelf. Paint is your go-to for instant impact, whatever your skill level.

TOUGH LOVE

To open this month’s education special, one expert discusses the issue of independence and our children, and why it’s never a bad idea to say no on occasions

As I am writing this, a few days before Christmas (thanks to the quirks of early deadlines in the publishing world), I’m surrounded by wrapping paper for our children’s presents, looking forward to the prospect of watching Love Actually this evening, all five of us snuggled on the sofa and all the joy and warmth of family life abounding.

Fast forward to February and, again, we see the shops full of red hearts on cards and chocolates and inflated prices of red roses. Yes, Valentine’s Day is here, again.

In reality, every parent knows that being a Mum or Dad can never always be Instagram perfect or the promise of everyday being wonderful. We all know that parenthood comes with enormous responsibilities and a great many challenges along the way. We agonise over decisions. What is best for each child? We worry, we want to keep them

EDUCATION • FEATURE ABSOLUTELY magazines 93
DON'T BE AFRAID TO RESTRICT THEIR USE OF TECHNOLOGY

safe, but know that we can’t wrap them up forever; we feel guilty about whether we have made the right decision – but, above all, what we all want more than anything is for our children to be happy and fulfilled. It seems timely to reflect on a bit of tough love. Yes, tough love. I almost feel that I should be a little guilty for even suggesting such a thing. I’m sure we are all glad that we no longer live in the days of Victorian values and child rearing where they were seen and not heard. However, do you think perhaps, if one reflects, things have now swung a little too far the other way? Children are often given so many choices – often becoming the King, Queen or CEO of their own small worlds!

Of course, children should have

opportunities to express their own thoughts and ideas, to be involved, within reason, in appropriate decisions. It is right that, as they become older, gradual steps of independence should be taken, but letting the genie out of the bottle too quickly can create unsettled children, at the very least. Drawing boundaries, where children know where the parameters exist, can o er children a sense of security. Far from feeling that children should be involved in every choice that is o ered to them, learning to make a decision within secure boundaries will create more secure children.

Don’t be afraid not to be your child’s best friend – you are the adult, the parent and you know what will be best for them, for the time being. With love, say no when you need

to do so. Sometimes they don’t like us, but they always love us and that is perfectly okay. Then, one day, as your older children stride out into the world on their own, perhaps in late teens and beyond, something rather amazing and transformative can happen. All the boundary laying, the “be in by x o’clock” and so on, begins to fall away quickly, there is a mutual sense of friendship and respect and you are into a new phase – a phase of truly unconditional friendship. It is wonderful!

We will always be their parents, but look forward to the wonderful relationships of the future. It is worth taking the time to pace things gradually

TIME to SIGN

Baby signing is a way to open up conversation with your child well before they can talk – and with potential benefits that last from infancy into young adulthood

Picture this, you are taking your baby to the park, and you tell them this by using the signs for ‘walk’ and ‘park’. Strangely, your baby keeps signing back to you the words ‘cat’ and ‘bed’ and at first you think they have misunderstood. But then you remember that this time last week when you were heading to the park along this very same road you saw a cat sleeping on a wall. You realise that your baby has remembered that encounter and wanted to share the memory with you. They started this conversation with you using baby signing. This was a real experience between a mum and a baby and illustrates just how useful and rewarding baby signing can be. The experts say this is a tool capable of opening up a rewarding dialogue between parents and children

well before spoken conversation begins.

It is important to distinguish ‘baby signing’ from ‘sign language’, as they are two separate entities with di erent purposes. British Sign Language (BSL) is specific to the deaf community and is a complete language in its own right with an alphabet and grammatical structures. Baby signing, on the other hand, is the use of gestures with spoken language. It is not meant as a substitute for the spoken word, but rather as a means of supporting language and helping young children engage with their world. Baby signing involves parents using a limited number of simple gestures to support words as they are spoken. This helps encourage communication and underpins the natural development of your child’s speech.

Baby signing today has its roots in the US

and is generally acknowledged to have started with the work of Dr Joseph Garcia (then an American Sign Language interpreter). He noticed that children of deaf friends who used ASL communicated by six months old, whereas children in verbal households tend to start limited communication at 12 months plus. A similar concept was pursued by two University of California child development academics in the 1990s, Dr Linda Acredolo and Dr Susan Goodywn. They spent some 20 years developing an impressive body of evidence and techniques for baby signing, also publishing books accessible to families. Here in the UK, baby signing has found many champions. Sasha Felix developed one of the first parent programmes, Sing and Sign, some 20 years ago – initially as a means to help her own young child’s development by combining baby signing with music. Sing and Sign has now introduced thousands of families to baby signing using music.

GETTING STARTED

While learning a language and teaching it to your child may seem daunting, baby signing does not require a huge investment of time – nor does it feel like an imposition. Gesturing when we speak is something most of us do instinctively, especially when we’re talking to children. Baby signing also acts as a natural extension of children’s own gestural stage, which is an important part of speech and language acquisition in early years.

The process of learning baby signing can be fun too. You can get started by reading books or watching online videos; however, a popular and social option is to attend in-person classes with your baby. Whatever route you choose, once you have started to pick up the basics it’s easy to implement these throughout your daily life. Armed with this new simple language of gestures, you then pass on these communication tools to your child.

signing is around six months – once an infant can sit up and use their hands to sign things out. Sasha Felix believes this is the best age to start, but some parents are keen to get going even earlier, and Sing and Sign has even introduced a class that caters for newborns. It’s important to note that baby signing does not interfere with your child’s natural speech development. Once your child becomes verbal, they will typically start to phase out their signing because it is quicker to speak than sign. That said, children may still continue to include a sign for emphasis, out of habit or when they are being particularly insistent.

FAMILY BENEFITS

The broader goal of baby signing is to help families to communicate, and the benefits are felt by parents and children alike. For parents it is a good way of learning how to speak clearly and communicate words and concepts at a level infants can understand. It also gives vital and fascinating insight into how children navigate the world. “It means they can communicate so much of what they are seeing, experiencing and feeling, so it’s a wonderful tool for bonding and getting to know your child,” says Sasha.

While communication is the first goal, when a child has the opportunity and means to express their thoughts, feelings and desires this does usually end up having a positive impact on

behaviour. “I would never be so presumptuous as to say that it takes away the frustrations of a two-year-old,” says Sasha. “Little people often have big feelings, and the goal of baby signing isn’t to get rid of those feelings, but to help them better communicate them.”

So don’t expect a total absence of temper tantrums or meltdowns. There is no such thing as a weak-willed two-year-old, and the goal of signing isn’t to turn your little one into an obedient robot. That said, arming them with extra communication skills does help with conflict de-escalation. Children are likely to pause to respond, and also feel more understood and listened to through the process of signing to you. Another big benefit is that baby signing naturally kick-

starts the process of learning to recognise and label feelings, which is an important step in developing emotional intelligence. While learning to hold a conversation with someone still in nappies may seem strange at first, baby signing is fun for both sides and establishes an environment of engagement and positive communication from the earliest years. Families that implement these simple language tools often continue to feel the benefits long after their little ones have moved on from signing and grown into talkative young people – and that’s got to be an idea worth investing in.

M ESSAGE of

HOPE

An uplifting new book turns familiar climate change narratives on their head, describing a potential future built on innovation and reinvention

102 ABSOLUTELY magazines

For young people, climate change is a tough subject. We adults present a set of challenges, not of their making, and focus on what seem like insurmountable problems. Too often this comes across as a vision of doom, of time running out. Little wonder then that some children become depressed, angry, even nihilistic when they think about their future and the world they will inherit.

Bright New World, a new book by Cindy Forde aimed at the 8+ age group, turns this narrative firmly on its head. With a big format, bold colours and wonderful illustrations by Bethany Lord, it o ers a set of inspiring real stories and ideas for fixing problems and creating a better environment. Hope was what inspired Cindy to write the book because she believes a lot of environmental information o ers only downbeat messages and design. “Children subliminally get the message that this is a di cult subject, a sad subject – even a dreary subject,” she says.

“The world is bright and beautiful. Children love nature and there’s probably nothing more beautiful than this natural show,” adds Cindy. “We really wanted to have that in the book, so that instead of environment being associated with everything that’s gone wrong and these very depressing images, the images inspire you both with the beauty of nature and with the fabulous creativity of humanity.”

She is critical of the trend to talk about a future full of hair-shirt denial – believing the story should be one of evolution. “Earth is capable of sustaining large populations of humans and other creatures, it’s just that we need to shift our distribution, if you like, and design things in the same way that

natural systems are designed.” She points to the “brilliant innovators” across science and other disciplines, already designing solutions. “The whole feeling now is that there’s this opportunity to transform –crisis brings danger and opportunity.”

Bright New World is big format in size and scope, and also rich in detail. It covers a lot of ground on environmental issues – from food choice challenges and circular economy principles to the future of travel and rainforest and ocean regeneration. This is not pie-inthe-sky idealism, but supported by facts, figures and information, all underpinned by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). There are plenty of environmental heroes here, with cases to demonstrate that change for the good is happening. “We need to give young people the sense that there are relatively simple things that they can do. I don’t want to put the onus on the individual because to really change this trajectory we need systemic change, but systems are guided by the individuals who live within them,” says Cindy.

Cindy comes from a science and environmental communications background, describing her overarching role as that of storyteller. She was previously CEO of Cambridge Science Centre and, before that, Managing Director of oceans charity Blue Marine Foundation. More recently, she has founded Planetari, an organisation focused

on worldwide environmental education. This has Amber Nuttall and Jonathan Porritt CBE among its team of advisors.

The book is both inspiring and informative, o ering a clear roadmap to the future. It’s also part of a wider mission. Cindy would like to see environmental education delivered more systemically – and positively – using UN SDGs as the bedrock, and Planetari is setting out to do just that. Bright New World is also part of this mission and she is designing additional material that she hopes will give educators extra resources that, alongside the book, will support lessons across the syllabus. As she says: “It comes from this place of not being afraid to look at the truth, but to see that there is a much more positive way forward if we believe we can take it.”

MAN

Dr Ranj Singh has won over the nation on breakfast TV, Strictly and CBeebies, yet he still puts in the hours as an NHS paediatrician. Absolutely Sussex finds out more

104 ABSOLUTELY magazines

Dr Ranj Singh follows in a fine tradition of medics who also entertain the nation (Harry Hill, Graeme Garden, Jonathan Miller, to name just three). He can sing and dance really well, he acts and now he writes books. Yet he still finds time to be a doctor – these days part-time – working as an NHS clinician specialising in paediatric emergency medicine. It is, he says, a terrific ice breaker when worried families turn up at his London hospital to find ‘that man o Strictly’.

Dr Ranj doesn’t see media work and medicine as strange bedfellows. “A lot of medics – even though they are highly academic people in a very vocational job – are multifaceted. I went to university with people who had many di erent skills: writing, performing, music, dance, you name it. So, we are multifaceted, and that for me lends itself really well to paediatrics. You have to have that approach as you’re dealing with kids, families, communication and complex medicine.”

His desire to be a doctor started really young. Indeed, he settled on medicine shortly after the typical childhood astronaut phase. “Ever since I was a few years old I just had a fascination with the way things work. I used to take all my toys apart, much to my parents’ frustration,” he says. “Also, I always had this desire to help people – I wanted to make things better for people.”

While Dr Ranj was always dedicated to getting good grades – he says you have to be on such an academic pathway – he also had performing in his bones. “Music was the very first thing I was told I was good at,” he says. His singing got him picked for the school choir and he won second place at Kent Music Festival. “That was the first ever certificate I got, so music was always something that was special to me,” he says. “While I was a really creative kid, that was something

I put to one side and had as a hobby.”

His path into medical school was easier than the transition to real-world medicine.

“It was a complete culture shock. Studying medicine is very di erent to practising medicine and that first year was a baptism of fire,” he says. “I thought, ‘this is completely di erent to what I expected and I’m not sure this is the right thing for me. I’m not getting that sense of achievement and satisfaction that I thought I would’.”

Having decided on a six-month sabbatical, Dr Ranj was clearing his mind by redecorating his parents’ house when he was asked to interview for a paediatrician role. He got the job, which meant house decorating at

speed, but the payback came in the realisation he’d found his passion. “I suddenly got this sense of, ‘this is why I became a doctor’,” he says. “It was fascinating medicine – every day was interesting. I was working with amazing people – paediatric teams are just the best people – and all of a sudden, I felt reinspired. I was destined to be a paediatrician after that.”

Paediatrics was the perfect fit not least because there is a creative side when you are working with children. They may be frightened, and they often can’t tell you what’s wrong. For children lucky enough to encounter Dr Ranj at his London hospital, there’s a friendly and very empathetic manner. Little wonder then that his ability to engage with young people took him beyond hospital. CBeebies viewers learnt that doctors are there to help on Get Well Soon – a fun factual programme for very young children. He co-created this with Kindle Entertainment and it first aired in 2012, picking up a BAFTA in 2016.

Dr Ranj soon came to prominence for adult viewers too, as resident medic at ITV’s This Morning, and with a multitude of appearances over recent years on everything from Good Morning Britain and Inside Out to 5 News –even Cooking with the Stars, where he showed he’s no slouch in the kitchen. Other media work includes contributions and columns for NetDoctor, Al Jazeera and Attitude

He has become, in short, one of those doctors trusted to dispense sound advice to the nation. But his performing ability has been the secret surprise. While he hoofed like a pro on Strictly, the voice he revealed in ITV’s All Star Musicals in March 2021 was a revelation and led to a one-o West End show in aid of Make a Di erence Trust Theatre Fund. He has loved these opportunities. “It’s given me a chance, I guess, to be the fuller me!”

Books for young people have been a natural progression. “Kids and young people are who I work with. They’re the ones I know how

to communicate with. I thought to myself: ‘I want to write books that they find helpful and useful, that they can turn to for information or reassurance’.” Dr Ranj chose a subject close to his heart with How to Grow Up and Feel Amazing: The No Worries Guide for Boys. “There was a need for a modern, up-to-date guide for boys and young men going through a very challenging time in this world.”

Brainpower followed this and was written to help counter some of the mental health and wellbeing impacts of the pandemic. Then

came picture books for young readers. A Superhero Like You was written as a thank you to front-line workers. “Also, a reminder to little ones about all the joy and positivity out there, even in a pandemic-stricken world. A Superpower Like Mine is a step on from that and is designed to inspire little ones to think about themselves and their own inherent superpowers and human skills that they can discover, build on and nurture.”

He’s been open in the past with his own journey as a gay man from a Sikh background. His advice to parents of children who may be struggling with identity or confused about growing up

is straightforward: “Give them a space to explore who they are safely and be able to come to you when they are in trouble. Also, acknowledge the fact that children are very open minded and they get diversity – let them learn about it,” he says. “There are so many resources out there to help, and so many helplines for parents if they are panicking. But kids are pretty good at working out who they are and settling, eventually, on what they want to be. And we’ve just got to let them explore and discover for themselves.”

The doctor hasn’t hung up his stethoscope or his pen, nor indeed his mic and dancing shoes. With more books for children and young adults planned for next year, there’s also been a Celebrity Cruises gig this summer and he was in pantomime, “which I loved”. And he’s still pursuing his first-love career, putting in the hours in the emergency room of a London hospital and helping children. “I still get to exercise that part of my brain and do my bread and butter. It’s the thing that drives me, the bit that gives me a sense of purpose.”

Smart MONEY

A new book for young people sets out to demystify money and help them unlock their entrepreneurial flair - and the timing is spot on

108 ABSOLUTELY magazines

Talking to young people about money is tricky. Schools usually shoehorn personal finance within PHSE. For parents, it’s even harder – we want our children to understand its value, its pitfalls and the importance of securing their own future financial stability without alarming them. Despite best intentions, often we approach the subject with our own baggage (guilt, cynicism and anxiety included). What makes it more complex today is that all bets are o on old certainties – safe career trajectory, job for life, cast-iron pension.

But money has leaped from business to front page news recently – so a good time for

a financial heart to heart. A new book, Max Your Money, makes a great starting point for honest conversations. The book takes an international perspective and is aimed squarely at ‘tweenies’ and teens, pitching content at a level young people relate to. Its authors are old hands in the world of high finance. Larry (Laurence) Hayes runs an investment fund when he’s not writing books for children (including How to Survive Without Grown-Ups), while Rachel Provest is a family o ce and private equity director based in Singapore, and with a special interest and expertise within education.

As the book reveals, there’s some good news. During their research, the two discovered a rich vein of optimism and entrepreneurial flair bubbling up among the young. “Larry and I were just amazed by the number of case studies we came across

of children in the target age group, from 11 upwards, who had started their own business and were running it brilliantly,” says Rachel. “Having really taken the time to do the groundwork on this area, we’re convinced – and quite blown away – by the power of children to build their own businesses without that adult cynicism.”

Rachel puts some of it down to the ease with which an internet connection enables young people to carry forward brilliant ideas, learning and researching as they go. “YouTube is the great educator these days,” she says. Rachel also believes young people see the business opportunities adults can’t spot. “Adults are almost in their shadow trying to keep up with the way they are thinking.” And thanks to crowdfunding and other new avenues of funding, the traditional barriers are down.

“Historically, you had to have money behind you otherwise it was impossible to catch up – you never had that advantage – so very few children could get beyond that and be successful o their own back. Whereas now, there’s really nothing stopping children as long as they have a good idea. With that, it’s more important than ever to make sure that they do have this basic understanding – how do you understand a profit and loss account, what’s the bottom line, how do you budget?” says Rachel.

This is where the book does a brilliant job. Divided into Earn it, Grow it, Use it, it o ers the kind of useful information every young person needs. For instance, it has

ABSOLUTELY magazines 109 EDUCATION • MONEY
“With children there’s no cynicism there – no negativity – they just go into things with best and honest intentions”

a comparison of certain jobs and what they pay. Who knew a Lego Master Builder can make £19 an hour and an English League 2 footballer makes £25? Fascinating facts indeed, but the book goes deeper, including explanations about why some salaries are much higher than others, which jobs may disappear in the future and how to boost your earnings. There’s advice on how to work out what sort of job would suit you, and how to approach interviews. Also,

how to negotiate a pay rise and know your own worth – a section many parents may also find useful. The book covers savings and investment, spending money wisely, e ective charitable giving and – in the most exciting part – testing your own brilliant entrepreneurial ideas like a business pro to see if they could be winners and learning about other successful young entrepreneurs.

The authors got their own children involved as critical readers to ensure the text was clear and engaging. “If they didn’t understand what we were talking about, we’d go back and try and clarify it a bit more. So that helped us ensure we had a form of bulletproof book that was definitely child friendly,” says Rachel. One thing that amazed them both during their research was young people’s openness to business ideas and their ‘can-do’ spirit of optimism. “It’s wonderful because with children there’s no cynicism there – no negativity. They naturally don’t think that way, they just go into things with best and honest intentions.”

Read the book’s case studies of young entrepreneurs and you will agree that there’s something wonderful going on.

From the super earner Ryan (of YouTube channel Ryan’s World), who earned $29.5m in 2020 as an unboxer to the Argentinian

ethical hacker Santiago Lopez who netted a more modest $1million plus, young entrepreneurs around the globe outline how they have spotted opportunities and gone for it. The Max Your Money authors have a companion book on its way for young would-be millionaires and Rachel is looking to use some of their research so far as the basis for a curriculum to help young people unlock their entrepreneurial talents.

One side benefit of Max Your Money is that Rachel’s own daughter – one of the book’s critical readers – has taken its ideas to heart. Aged just 12, she is now running a startup that utilises her digital skills and creative spark. “She makes TikTok videos for companies,” says Rachel. “It started with a friend who needed help. It has gone from one to seven people. She sets their videos up for them, which is fantastic. I’m looking forward to retiring quite soon!”

LIFE STUDY

Looking at your happygo-lucky 11-year-old you might struggle to picture them at work in industry or forging their way in a creative profession. It can even be hard to imagine them deciding on a university course or facing an interview panel. But parents of older children will tell you, time begins to fly once pupils leave their primary years behind them.

Learning matters and so, too, do examination results. At St Joseph’s College Ipswich they want every student to achieve their potential; to have the broadest range of choices when the time comes to make those grown-up decisions. Crucially, they understand that all

learners are di erent and that’s why the education they o er is tailored to the individual.

Senior school years are laden with new experiences for students – specialisation, personal growth, trips away, deepening friendships and developing awareness of their place in the world. That’s a lot to take on board, but the school will support them at every stage.

Their able students are stretched and mentored. They o er Foundation, Higher and Extended Project Qualifications, allowing them to carry out research on topics of particular interest to them. Their courses of study include traditional GCSEs and A-levels, but also technical and vocational courses, such as BTECs and CTECs for those who prefer continuous assessment.

With annual rugby, netball and cricket festivals, plus valued links to Ipswich Town FC, there’s always a sporting goal to drive for, while their brilliant musicals and groundbreaking all-comers’ summer arts festival feed creativity. St Joseph’s o ers a plethora of exciting clubs and activities too, allowing children to try their hand at new things and delve deeper into personal passions.

Head of Enrichment, Dr Briege Rice, states: “Whether in Textiles or Performing Arts, critical thinking in the Higher Project Qualification or First Aid training, public speaking or experiencing bushtucker challenges, our students get the opportunity to acquire a repertoire of life skills.”

There is still time to apply for Year 7 September 2023 entry. Sign up for their Open Day on 18 March to gain first-hand experience of their warm, welcoming and inclusive community.

Angela Hall, Head of Year 7 Support, promises: “In addition to the support o ered to parents, after a June ‘Moving Up’ day and a September ‘Settling In’ day, Year 7 students, guided by their form tutors, are seamlessly established into the routines of St Joseph’s College. Nobody is a newbie for long!”

we are familiar with the exam process and get help with things we might not understand.

I like the fact that Mrs Brown (our Deputy Headteacher and Year 6 teacher) sends a letter home to our parents about what we should do the night before and on the day of our exams. This has been very helpful.

Q What extra-curricular activities do you take part in? How key are these to you?

Moyo is one of two brothers who is currently in Year 6 at Loyola Preparatory School. He has attended Loyola (as did his brother) from the age of three years. At the moment, he is in the middle of taking his entrance exams for secondary school, and Moyo has already received o ers for Year 7 at New Hall and Caldicott School. He is also through to the second stage for Harrow and St Edward’s School. Absolutely sat down with him to find out more about his school life.

Q Tell us about Loyola Preparatory School….

A Loyola Preparatory School is fun and friendly. It is a very supportive environment and I have had kind teachers who really care.

I have made good friends and I feel lucky that I am in a school where the big boys are always looking out for the younger boys (even when we are outside of school!). We do lots of work in the classroom and have many sporting opportunities and clubs that help us to spend more time with friends. I also like the fact that there are opportunities to take on duties like playground leader as you progress through the school. This helps us to know more boys at school and inspire those who can’t think of what to do at playtime. We also have many fun school trips.

Q How do you feel about the whole exam process including the preparation?

A The exam process has been good because the teachers don’t make it too stressful. We have been practicing lots of past papers for the schools that we are applying for so that

A I am involved in many clubs including: CAFOD club – this gives me an opportunity to support others who are less fortunate; Lego club – this is a weekly opportunity to get creative and doing this with my friends is fun; Sketch Club – allows me to put the ideas that are on my mind on a piece of paper, and I find it relaxing; Rugby and Cricket Club – helps me to get exercise and spend time with my friends after school.

Q What does the rest of your time at Loyola look like once the 11+ entrance exams are completed?

A Just a lot of fun! We have activity week coming up, which is a week full of various activities, some of which we get to do with our parents. We have an enterprise week where we get into teams and come up with a business idea that will raise profits to give to charity. We get to tell the rest of the school about our business idea and encourage them to buy from us! Finally, we have a school trip to Jersey, where we visit di erent places throughout the working week. We will also be writing our SAT exams somewhere in between all the fun!

Embracing E-LEARNING

Sitting in the classroom isn’t the only way to improve yourself…

E-learning – it's a phrase that few of us had even heard of a couple of years ago. But since a global pandemic forced schools and universities to move online, E-learning has become a mainstay of education for people all over the world.

Like most sudden changes in education, E-learning has been met with some scepticism. But rest assured, as the world continues to change, learning online is here to stay. Rather than trying to deny it, we should be embracing it as a tool which makes education easier to achieve for many people. Here’s why…

IT FITS AROUND YOUR LIFE

Remember, E-learning isn’t just for school children. Plenty of adults have turned to online classes to earn qualifications or satisfy their thirst for knowledge. In the busy worlds of adulthood and parenthood, it can be di cult to find time to attend in-person classes. Learning online in your own home solves this problem by removing the commute and making sure all the materials you need can be accessed at the click of a mouse.

IT REMOVES ANY GEOGRAPHICAL BOUNDARIES

Found the perfect course, but it’s only taught at an institution hundreds of

miles away? This is no longer a problem with E-learning. By moving online, education has become accessible to everyone, regardless of where they live.

This isn’t solely an issue of convenience either. People from developing countries can now access education online that wasn’t previously available to them. All they need is a laptop and an internet connection.

IT PREPARES YOUNG PEOPLE FOR REMOTE WORKING

Just as children have always been taught how to dress for job interviews and behave in an o ce environment, they now need to be coached on how to act in a remote working environment. Zoom meetings may have been new, unfamiliar territory for those already in the workforce, but for people who’ve grown up with E-learning, the challenge of meeting and working with people through a camera is a familiar one.

NO MORE SNOW DAYS

School children may bemoan this point, but E-learning will save countless hours of lost schooling. Things that once might have blocked children from attending lessons (snow, floods, chicken pox etc.) are a thing of the past. E-learning means no one ever has to miss out on their education due to factors outside of their control.

Of course, E-learning isn’t completely infallible. To learn online you need a fast, reliable broadband connection – one that won’t cut out during a class discussion on Zoom or bu er during a streamed lecture.

With Swish Fibre you can get lightningfast Full Fibre broadband throughout your home, no matter how many devices are connected. So you can be learning online while others in your home are watching TV or gaming – you'll still be able to work and learn without disruption or delay.

HELPING HAND

Bellway Essex is o ering house-hunters across the region up to £24,000 towards their mortgage payments to help reduce their cost of living. The developer is o ering to pay £1,000 a month towards mortgage payments for up to two years for buyers of designated plots at its developments in Essex and Su olk. Bellway has launched the o er, which will run to the end of March, to help customers as the cost of living puts pressure on domestic budgets. The housebuilder is also reminding people that buying an energye cient new-build house from Bellway would also save an average of £2,600 a year on their fuel bills, when compared to an older property of a similar size.

Jenny Walker, Sales Director at Bellway Essex, says: “We have launched this mortgage

contribution initiative to lend a helping hand to homebuyers as a response to the cost-of-living pressures on people’s budgets.

Bellway Essex is building hundreds of new homes at 15 active developments across the region and we are o ering to pay £1,000 a month towards buyers’ mortgage payments for up to two years on selected plots.

“People who buy a new-build Bellway house can also save a further £220 a month on their energy bills, compared to an older property of the same size,” Jenny continues. “Modern construction techniques and new technologies allow us to build homes which are more energy e cient and less expensive to run, thanks to improved insulation and appliances that use less gas, electricity and water.

“In addition to these savings, purchasers know they are buying a home from a company which has retained its five-star status with the Home Builders Federation

for the sixth year in a row – which means that more than 90% of customers say they would recommend Bellway to a friend. By combining our mortgage contribution o er and the energy savings which come with a new-build home, buyers of selected plots could save a total of up to £29,200 over two years. We would advise potential purchasers wanting to take advantage of these benefits to get in contact with us as soon as possible.”

Bellway’s mortgage contribution is available at the following 15 Essex and Su olk developments: Bourne View, Hatfield Grove, New Gimson Place, Ridleys Orchard, Sapphire Fields, Priory Grange, Novello, Poppy View, Aspen Walk, Eve Meadows, Hollytree Walk, Willow Park, Rivenhall Park, Lockwood Place and at Saxon Heath, which is being built by Ashberry Homes, part of the Bellway Group

Managerial

ROLE

Whether you are a seasoned investor or are looking to purchase a rental home for the first time, there are several aspects to consider before committing to a property.

An initial consideration is whether you intend to manage the rental and tenancy yourself or would be better placed to work with a lettings agent who can handle it for you. Agents can typically o er di erent levels of service from a fully managed o ering, including finding tenants and maintenance, to just collecting the monthly rent. Some will also have a sales team in the o ce, so if becoming a landlord is something you are thinking about reach out and they should not only be able to talk you through renting processes, but they may also be able to point you in the direction of suitable properties available on the market.

This being said, securing the right house at the right price will not only be critical in providing a good return on your investment, but also ensure you are not borrowing excessively so that the expected letting yield doesn’t cover the costs.

In addition to the purchase, there are associated costs with renting properties so do acknowledge these when budgeting. You will

have certain obligations, such as safety certificates, as well as ad hoc expenses, such as appliance repairs, so creating a spreadsheet for the potential rental income, anticipated and unexpected expenditures and any mortgage repayments will help keep things clear.

Considering the scope of the property and area it is located in is equally essential. Is it in a desirable area? Is it close to local amenities and transportation? Does it need much renovation? Is there scope for future development? Finding a great property in a place with both rental and residential homes will likely present options in the future, whether continuing to let it or deciding to sell. durdenandhunt.co.uk

PLANNING FORWARD

With February upon us and Valentine’s Day fast approaching, love is most definitely in the air. However, for those looking to sell a property in the current market, frustration is more often the key emotion, as many potential buyers have understandably put their plans on hold. But as with so much in life, with every challenging situation comes opportunity, and that’s what’s being a orded by the lettings market right now. Indeed, with rents skyrocketing and prospective tenants

clamouring for decent homes, many stymied vendors are deciding to take advantage of the situation and let their property out instead. But for such first time landlords, the prospect of preparing their property for rental can feel quite daunting. However, from my experience this needn’t be the case – it’s simply a question of planning ahead and being organised.

Obviously it’s vital that your property is well presented, which could mean bringing in a painter and decorator to freshen everything up. Just remember to keep colours neutral. In addition, everywhere should be spotlessly clean. Indeed, you might want to consider getting in a professional cleaner.

Depending on the sort of tenant you are seeking to attract, you have the option to o er your property furnished or unfurnished. For long-term renters and families, the latter is usually preferable as they often have their own furniture.

Even if you do go down the unfurnished route, it’s still important to conduct a proper and thorough inventory as this will help protect walls, doors, floors and ceilings as well as any fixtures and fittings. In a similar vein, you will reduce the risk of damage to white goods by making all necessary user manuals available.

Being a landlord means adhering to

certain safety regulations, which we at Hunt will happily advise you on and can even arrange. For the record, however, you will need an Energy Performance Certificate, ensure all electrical goods meet the Electrical Equipment Safety Regulations, undertake annual gas safety checks, have installed and tested smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and have made sure that all furniture and furnishings meet regulation standards.

For extra peace of mind, you may wish to consider taking out a landlordspecific buildings and contents insurance and a rent guarantee policy.

If you’re thinking of renting out a property in Repton Park, Woodford Green, Chigwell and the surrounding environs please do get in touch. As well as having expert knowledge of the local rental market, we also o er a full property management service. huntpropertyservices.co.uk

Chigwell Place

Where work and play comes together in perfect harmony

An exciting new concept for those looking to achieve a healthier work/life balance has been created in the heart of leafy Chigwell.

The new work/life space and community hub is set in 42 acres of beautiful gardens and woodland, just 20 minutes but feeling like a million miles from the grind of the City.

Inspired by the benefits of nature, Chigwell Place is an environment designed to stimulate mind and body: improving productivity, physical health and overall wellbeing.

At launch, Chigwell Place will provide four private workspaces, each for up to six people, on a flexible short or long-term rental basis. There will also be a large hotdesking space for member drop-ins. Founder members, who will be assigned their own unique 3mx3m space on their member cards by geo-location wonderkids What3Words, will be o ered the further opportunity to shape and benefit from exciting future developments planned for 2023. The ambition is to grow a diverse community of like-minded souls, where members are encouraged to meet, support and potentially collaborate for mutual benefit. A programme of regular, thought-provoking member events will be curated to help foster this.

A ‘frictionless’ philosophy that looks to minimise stress and optimise time underpins the entire member experience. The journey to Chigwell Place is served by excellent public transport links and there is ample free parking for members and client guests. All spaces are keycode accessible, enjoy superfast WiFi and all utility bills are covered.

When R&R is called for, one can choose between working out one’s stresses in the high-spec gym, taking a reviving stroll in the acres of grounds or enjoying barista co ee, fresh smoothies, and breakfast and lunch menus in the all-day café. In

the same way, all workspaces have been designed to allow natural light to flood in, aiding focus during the day and improved sleep at its end. Dog friendliness only adds to the easy community atmosphere.

Founder James Gilzean says: “The pandemic has accelerated the call for greater flexibility in how people run their businesses and balance work and play. And while there are many successful co-working spaces in London o ering nimble alternatives to long leases, none are designed around member wellbeing in the way that we, in 42 acres of grounds, can be. So, I am excited to meet the rising demand for new ways of working with a concept that brings something new to West Essex, and I welcome early applications for founder membership to help us shape the next phase together.”
