e've gone overboard with summer excitement in this issue. Along with much talk of bikinis and beachwear with the enormously beautiful Heidi Klum (her own-brand swimwear collection launches this month), we have a big focus on things to do outdoors in the coming months. There's an extensive overview of London's many imminent festivals, ranging from music to comedy to food, in all areas of our urban sprawl. But mostly, this month, we are focusing on Walton Street. This unusually stylish shopping street is home to many shops and businesses that cater to Chelsea's – and the world's – most discerning shoppers, while retaining its village feel and community identity. We discover that it was the Queen's visit to

9 CH_June16_EDS_LETTER.indd 9

buy homewares in the 1960s that placed the street firmly on the map as a destination for interiors, while in Victorian times the street was home to dairies, butchers, bakers, greengrocers, undertakers and other long-gone establishments. In this issue, we celebrate its current inhabitants, ranging from established stalwarts to enthusiastic newcomers, in fields ranging from food to fashion to interiors and more. We hope you enjoy the magazine. ◆

SERPENTINE PAVILION

From 1 0 Jun e Ken s i ng t o n Ga r d e ns he annual Serpentine Pavilion, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group T (BIG), is unveiled this month and described as an ‘unzipped wall’ that is transformed from straight line to threedimensional space. It's set to be a dramatic structure that by day houses a café and free activities and by night becomes a space for the Serpentine’s acclaimed Park Nights programme of performative works by artists, writers and musicians. This year's architecture programme features five specially commissioned summerhouses by emerging architects too.◆ ¢serpentinegalleries.org

INTRANSIT FESTIVAL

17-26 Jun e ack for its tenth year, InTRANSIT Festival is recognised as one of the B most exciting, challenging and surprising highlights of London’s arts calendar. An eclectic and experimental programme of theatre, dance, art and music that takes over the streets and iconic buildings of Kensington and Chelsea this June. Curated and produced by O’Neill/Ross, it champions work that is immediate and relevant, and commissions new art of every genre in unexpected locations. ◆ ¢ intransitfestival.co.uk

J

ust unveiled at the V&A is the new installation, Elytra Filament Pavilion. The outcome of four years of groundbreaking research on the integration of architecture, engineering and biomimicry principles, the project explores how biological fibre systems can be transferred to architecture. The impressive 200m² pavilion structure is inspired by lightweight construction principles found in nature – the fibrous structures of the forewing shells of flying beetles known as elytra. Elytra’s components have been fabricated by a robot

17 NH_June16_Culture_.indd 17

at the University of Stuttgart and assembled on site in the John Madejski Garden. The pavilion will grow and change its configuration over the course of the V&A Engineering Season in response to anonymous data on how visitors use and move under the canopy. This, as well as structural data, will be captured by real-time sensors installed in its canopy fibres. Throughout the season the data will be mapped and made available online. On 17 and 18 June, visitors will be able to see the pavilion evolve. ◆ Cromwell Road, SW7 ¢ vam.ac.uk

PARTY ON Our round up of London’s top summer festivals Wo r d s e l i z a b e t h h u t t o n Illustration Phil Couzens

L

ike strawberries and cream, summer and festivals come hand in hand. But, while many of us long for hazy weekend parties, others can’t think of anything worse. With no electricity, little signal and (thank you, British summer) a lot of mud and rain, festivals can be more than a tad unbearable. Thankfully, for die-hard city kids, the number of festivals inside London is high. So high, in fact, that you really don’t need to leave home to get your fix. To prove our point, here’s a roundup of this year’s best...

BARCLAYCARD BRITISH SUMMER TIME

 1~10 July Hyd e Park Please try and find a line-up better than this because we’re pretty sure no other festival in London has got it so sweet. Taking place over two weeks, headliners include Stevie Wonder, Florence and the Machine and Carole King. The real gems,

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

USE_NH_June16_Festival.indd 18

however, are hidden in the small print: Pharrell Williams, Corrine Bailey Rae and Mystery Jets will all be taking to the stage. Inside the gates you’ll also find fairground rides, gourmet street food vans and live comedy acts. Nominated for five festival awards last year (including the coveted award for best toilets), you’re guaranteed a proper festival experience with your bed just a tube ride away. An annual must. ◆  West Carriage Drive, W2; bst-hydepark.com

WIRELESS

 8~10 July Fin sbury Park Now in its 11th year, Wireless is well established and in spite of the fact that it’s moved from central London to the north, acts remain A-lister: Calvin Harris, Craig David and The 1975 will all be performing. It’s this line-up of big names that makes Wireless the festival for anyone who loves chart music but can’t face a grimy weekend away. Alongside the more mainstream acts, organisers have got plenty

of up-and-coming talent on the bill and although none will be truly alternative, they do give this event a bit of depth. While the pop, dance and urban festival will give you the opportunity to tick off many a chart favourite, it is, more than anything else, a party for people who know how to let loose. ◆  Endymion Road, N4; wirelessfestival.co.uk

THE BALHAM COMEDY FESTIVAL

 10~16 July The Bedford This will be one of the most hilarious events of the summer. Celebrating the thriving live comedy scene, a wide range of comedic styles – from the easy boyish

humour of Metro columnist Richard Herring to the pun-loving, manic-haired, comedy of Milton Jones – will come to Balham. Held in seminal venue, The Bedford, this comedy festival takes your favourite acts away from the big lights of television and p uts them back in their natural habitat: the UK’s small stand-up comedy bars. It’s this that makes The Balham Comedy Festival truly special. Each intimate show makes ad-lib possible and gives the comic

a chance to prove how truly clever and witty they are. A must for anyone who can’t make it up to Edinburgh for the Fringe. ◆  77 Bedford Hill, SW12; balhamcomedyfestival .com

CAUGHT BY THE RIVER THAMES

 6~7 August Fulham Palace For those who like the culture of Port Eliot, this one’s for you. Hoping to bridge the gap between high summer rock ‘n’ roll and Springwatch, this brand new festival will bring creative minds and artistic souls together to celebrate music, drama, nature and good beer.  12~14 August Oval Space Want unlimited beer? At the London Craft Beer Festival you can get it. Back for the fourth year running, this weekend promises punters a taste of the best world class craft with over 30 independent breweries chosen to attend by the beer-obsessed organisers. While well-known brands such as Brewdog and Beavertown will be in attendance, more niche Scandinavian and Estonian brewers – such as Sori Brewing – will be travelling all the way to Bethnal Green in the name of good ale. In total, 250 beers will be ready for tasting so you are pretty much guaranteed to find your dream brew. This, dear friends, is the drinks festival of the summer. For proper craft beer, insane food and truly good music head here. It’s guaranteed to be a great weekend, so long as you don’t overdo it.  The Oval, E2; londoncraftbeerfestival.co.uk

BBC GOOD FOOD

 27~29 August Hampton Court Palace Organised by Britain’s number one food media brand, this is must for all of those who love to cook and eat. In the same way that the team behind BBC Good Food bring the best chefs and coolest smallscale producers together at their indoor shows, this outdoor festival sees names such as Paul Hollywood and Michel Roux Jr alongside the artisans. It’s this clever mashup of the known and unknown that makes this weekend exciting. Indeed, while the famous chefs will be spilling their secrets on the Interview Stage, others will be teaching you how cook just like them in the Summer Theatre Kitchen. Held in the historical grounds of Hampton Court, all tickets include entrance to the palace so you can go and explore Henry VIII’s old home. here’s nothing more frustrating than having a holiday wardrobe that doesn’t work in the city,” says Annie Pollett of Iris, the boutique that hits the spot in its three London locations. From its origins in Queens Park, the boutique soon expanded to Chiswick and Battersea, where its edit of brands including ACNE, American Vintage, Duffy, BA&SH, plus diffusion lines by Isabel Marant and Vanessa Bruno hits the spot among local womenfolk. Founders Pollett and Sarah Claassen were friends who had identified a lack of boutiques offering grown-up, wearable fashion, and in 2004 they opened Iris. Last year, they launched their own label, By Iris, and the new summer collection is designed to work in multiple situations. “We focused on creating pieces that work equally well on the beach or at a Sunday lunch in town,” they say. The kaftan dress, for instance, fits the bill perfectly and is the ideal summer wardrobe addition. Equally wearable are the broderie anglaise top, which looks amazing with jeans or shorts on holiday, and the broderie anglaise dress, says Sarah. “Accessories are a highlight of the collection with lovely stripey espadrilles for everyday, and the bronze gladiator sandals have been hugely popular.” u

COSTUME DRAMA Model and designer Heidi Klum has launched her own brand of swimwear. Absolutely meets her Interview Pendle Harte

H

eidi Klum is sitting under a spotlight in the Soho Hotel surrounded by several rails full of bikinis. She is in London – briefly – to launch Heidi Klum Swim, an extension of her Heidi Klum Intimates brand, and she is radiating enthusiasm. In fact she is simply radiating – her big smile, open face and winning charm make her instantly likeable. Not for Heidi the frosty princess manner. Her entourage, however, is a different story. We have been firmly instructed not to veer the slightest bit away from the subject we are here to discuss, which is her new swimwear range. Klum may be German by birth, and broadcast weekly on German television’s huge hit Germany’s Next Top Model, but she lives and works in LA and sounds almost entirely American, apart from occasional turns of phrase. When she says swimwear, she means bikinis – and by that she really means bikini bottoms,

because she herself has little interest in wearing a top part. But swimwear, as Klum discovered, is almost as technical as lingerie, which she has been designing for some time. ‘Yes, a bra is just like a phone! There’s so much technology. Whether it’s a flexible underwire or a half underwire, there’s always a new invention. And the pads too. Did you know we make memory foam bras?’ So for the new swimwear collection, the technical details were just as important as the design. Starting with the hardwear, which Klum has strong opinions about: it mustn’t rust, or be too brash. ‘Nobody wants a huge H on their back!’ And the fabric has to be just right. ‘You need to make sure they don’t fall off or start getting weird when they’re wet. They all have to be tested.’ Klum is one of the world’s highest earning models. Despite having featured on the covers of several editions of Vogue and worked as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, she hasn’t forgotten that she started out as a catalogue model. ‘People used to say

FASHION / PROFILE

I’d never be anything else, so when I got my first French Vogue cover it made me feel an inch taller.’ She counts working with photographer Peter Lindbergh among her career highs, and cites ‘jobs that make me overcome my fears’ as her favourites. ‘When I shoot Germany’s Next Top Model it’s a live show in an arena full of 15,000 people and I have to talk for three hours. It’s terrifying. I’m trying to have fun but I’m scared – we have people like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga sitting on the sofa and I have to interview them and I have people shouting in my ear about commercial breaks, and millions of people watching at home. It’s nerve-wracking.’ The show is filmed in LA, as a concession to Klum’s family commitments; she has four children at school there. ‘So I go to Germany and cast the girls, then I take them to Los Angeles and film it there and I’m home at the end of the day.’

Casting young models must be a tough job. Can she tell immediately who’s in and who’s out? ‘ Yes, you can see who’s got it. But even though there are so many beautiful girls, not all of them can perform in front of a camera or step into a role. You have to be able to perform.’ It’s a well-trodden path from modeling to designing, but Klum is careful not to design just with herself in mind. ‘If I did it would probably be just bottoms, not tops! I mean I’m more of an itsy bity teeny weeny girl myself and my top comes off on the beach. I’m not a big fan of tan lines. So I try to think about the girl who wants more coverage. I know that a lot of girls like push-up – I don’t like that, but I have to think about what other girls want to wear. And I have the hardest time with one-pieces, because I never wear those myself.’ With 2,000 stockists around the world, there are also the different markets to consider. ‘When you go to the

29 NH_June16_HEIDI KLUM.indd 29

beach in Australia it’s a very different look from anywhere else. Everyone’s in long sleeves and hats with flaps down the back – and then in St Barts everyone has hardly anything on.’ On the beach, of course, Klum wears her own designs – ‘I like the tropical, fun ones because I’m often on an island, shooting something’ – and off the beach, she likes to ‘have fun with fashion’. Though as she admits, this means that ‘people sometimes hammer me for my choices. I wore a big Zac Posen gown to collect my Bambi award and I felt like Grace Kelly.’ But usually she likes to wear pieces by the Olsen twins – ‘they do a great job, they go to the fabric shows, just like how I do my stuff.’ ◆ Heidi Klum Swim is available at House of Fraser, John Lewis and online at Figleaves and ASOS as well as at select boutiques nationwide. Prices range from £43-£145

TRUNK SHOW Oliver Tomalin of Love Brand & Co talks trunks, shorts and conservation Interview Pendle Harte

PENDLE HARTE: Which came first, the elephant trunks or the swimming trunks? OLIVER TOMALIN: I have loved elephants since being a kid and the risk of them becoming extinct inspired me to start Love Brand & Co. In 2010, some elephants arrived in London in the form of brightly painted sculptures. The campaign really struck a cord, being a lover of elephants and art. Until this point I was not aware elephants were so worryingly close to extinction. At the time I was designing summer shoes and I felt there was a gap for a new mens’ swimwear brand. So later that same year, my then girlfriend (now wife) Rose and I set about creating our first collection of swimming trunks that would help raise awareness and funds to save elephants from extinction in the wild, a concept we coined Trunks for Trunks. PH: How does Love Brand work – what happens to the profits? OT: The ‘Love’ in Love Brand & Co. is about loving life and saving wildlife. Our mantra is to love life to the full, but to do so responsibly. It is up to us to protect the natural world and its biodiversity, so our children can also enjoy the

brand. We have launched our London store in Chelsea at 5 Park Walk and our Barbados beach store in St James and we have had the pleasure of working with some amazing people.

WE ARE SAVING elephants, ONE PAIR OF SWIMMING trunks at a TIME wondrous variety of life on earth. Our donations are based on revenue, rather than profits. Currently we donate 5% of our revenue to three inspirational charities, Elephant Family, The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Tusk Trust. All of them tirelessly working to protect and conserve elephants and other endangered wildlife. Instead of retrofitting social responsibility, our brand started with this cause in mind. This is represented in our logo of two elephants coming together to form a heart. We are waving the flag for these forgotten wild animals and plan to help save them, one pair of swimming trunks at a time. PH: What successes have you had? OT: This year is Love Brand’s fifth birthday. We are very proud of our contribution to conservation and our successes so far as a emerging designer

43 NH_June16_LOVE BRAND Q&A.indd 43

PH: What’s your best-selling product? OT: Our bestseller is definitely our original product, the Classic Swim Short. Our fabric is really soft and fast-drying. There is a lot of consideration going on in the design, like the tusk-shaped hardware on the end of our drawstrings, symbolising our commitment to elephants. Our Classic Swim Shorts come in sizes for both men and kids, so families can match. This season we have a collection of marine inspired prints including my favourite design, ‘Double Take’, which is a Sea Horse print and in the negative spaces there are Orcas. PH: What is your background? OT: I have an artistic background and read Architectural Design at university. It is really cool to now be doing something that involves design, being entrepreneurial, travel and helping wildlife. Love Brand & Co. is really an amalgamation of all the things I love. PH: What’s next for Love Brand? OT: This summer we have new things going on in Ibiza, St Tropez and Porto Cervo as well as pop-up happening with a bunch of exciting brands on Portobello Road. Later on, we plan to open our next beach store location and also introduce some women’s product. The last five years have been incredible and eye-opening, so we are excited to discover where the journey will lead us next. u lovebrand.com

waxing is often presented maybe not as an actively pleasureable activity but certainly as a light-hearted and fun one. We are used to being offered blueberry or chocolate, as if hair removal were a muffin. But until now this (admit it) fairly painful form of hair removal has always taken place in standard clinical style waxing surroundings, however hard they are pushing the fun element. However, Ministry of Waxing has brought it out of the spa and into the open with a new waxing cafe, as if to highlight quite how fun and even sociable waxing can be. On the ground floor, A Wanted Man is all espresso and delicious brunchy dishes, while upstairs is entirely dedicated to hair removal and eyebrow threading, all of it decorated on a Wild West theme. We weren't sure what it was all supposed to mean, but precluding my wax with a high class flat white and some crispy sourdough toast was a great way to go about the ordeal. To add to the fun, they are promising mulled wine flavoured wax for Christmas – probably with actual mulled wine downstairs – but we'll be returning well before that. u

ABSOLUTELY / PROMOTION additional exercises to complement your session. Active and passive stimulations combined are extremely effective. To achieve the benefits of Cure, Relax and Train, there are five distinct effects deployed. Striking brings you a real pummeling sensation, warming muscles up and preparing them for exercise, like a physiotherapist hitting your muscles with the edges of his hands. Kneading relaxes muscles deeply with a soothing massage, relieving tension, improving circulation and cleaning metabolites. Friction is a natural solution to cut the transmission of pain to the brain; you will feel a diffuse warming, a mild pleasant caress. Pressure is the effect physiotherapists use most during

STRONG SIGNAL Bluetens turns your phone into a massage device, as Absolutely discovers

here is a host of smartphone apps that help you manage your health and exercise regime. But now there’s one that takes direct action – and it can give you a calming massage along the way. Electrostimulation is a training technique used by athletes to prepare and recover. Now Bluetens, the first electrostimulator controlled by your phone (iPhone and android), makes it easy to benefit from its effects at home or on the move. Developed by a team of experts, it mimics a natural process generating electric currents that can treat, relax or strengthen you depending on your needs. The fact that it is operated by smartphone means the device itself is both smaller and more affordable than its competitors.

The three key actions of Bluetens depend upon the frequency, intensity and duration of stimulation the system provides, and all three can be made to work on 15 different areas of the body via the hypoallergenic electrode pads. Using a gentle action employed by therapists, Cure provides natural pain relief and helps muscles recover faster from injury. It uses two techniques, one giving immediate effect and the other ensuring longer-lasting relief. Relax is what you need after physical effort, stress or a tiring day, providing massages that help you unwind and bring a feeling of wellbeing. Finally, Tone prepares your muscles for exercise and helps to improve performance wherever they are used. massage. At low intensity it will give a pacifying feeling on the skin, while muscular tensions will melt away at higher intensity. Contraction works muscles to strengthen and tone them without stressing your joints. The Bluetens device has a single button, is only 4 x 6cm, weighs just 25g and can give 15 days’ use on one charge. But its simplicity belies the wealth of functionalities the app can provide when it automatically connects to your phone. Combinations of the five effects mean there are over 150 programmes available, and of course your whole body can profit. If you want more, the app offers exercises, work-outs and stretching tips to build on Blutens’ effects, suggests courses of programmes to follow for the outcomes you want, and provides how-to videos. Little wonder Bluetens has won the praise of sportspeople from sprinters to racing drivers, squash-players to motocross riders. Give your body a headstart, whether healing, training or relaxing. u

SCANDI LIVING Absolutely takes a tour of Scandi Mini founder Gabrielle Spång's minimal home in Fulham Wo r d s h e l e n b a r o n P h o t o g r a p h y P h i l i p pa J a m e s

ABSOLUTELY: When did you realise you had a passion for design? GABRIELLE SPÅNG: For as long as I can remember, l have loved design. I collected items from the brands I loved and followed fashion from as early as 10 (and this was before blogs and the internet). This passion expanded to children’s design when I had my son, seven years ago, and it’s still growing. Design party pieces are my current obsession.

ABS: How long have you been in the business? GS: I launched Scandi Mini about five years ago. We’re currently planning our fifth birthday event, which is very exciting. ABS: What brands did you champion in the early days? GS: Mini Rodini, BangBang Copenhagen and LuckyBoySunday were part of our first set of 10 brands (we now stock more than 150) and they were popular from the start, despite being fairly unknown back then. We were one of the first websites to sell these brands and presented them very differently from everyone else selling them at the time, taking a more minimal approach rather than the following the retro trend. That set us apart.

SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN brings calm to spaces THAT MIGHT otherwise

ABS: Why do you think Scandinavian design is so popular? GS: In my mind, the true essence of Scandinavian design is minimalism, high quality and the ‘natural’. It brings calm to spaces that can otherwise be busy. I think that’s why it works for so many; it’s not too in-your-face, and it goes with plenty of styles and objects. Scandinavian children’s fashion specifically offers all these qualities in addition to being unisex and sustainable – which a few years ago was groundbreaking.

sustainable

in the UK? GS: I’d like to think we’ve contributed to this popularity. We’ve certainly raised several Scandinavian brands’ profiles in the UK, often by being the first shop to stock them; BangBang Copenhagen is one example. They are now sold in a lot of other places as well.

or finding new brands. It’s been hard because I have always had limited resources financially, being completely self-funded; also, from a human resources point of view, I was on my own for the first couple of years at the same time as I had my daughter. Luckily, I now have a great little team working with me.

ABS: What are your key buys for this season? GS: This season is divided into two trends: plant and unicorn prints. As such, I’d say Mini Rodini, Tinycottons and Les Petits Vagabonds (a new brand we will be stocking for Spring) all have very strong collections that explore these trends in one way or another. ABS: How do you approach sourcing suppliers? GS: First, I try and visualise what I want the next season to be about. I read heaps of interior magazines, go on Etsy, Instagram and several different design blogs and I also find a lot of inspiration by reading Scandinavian magazines. I then contact the suppliers that I feel fit my aesthetic and take it from there. Our main ethos, however, is to create long-term relationships with brands and many have been with us for several years.

ABS: What has been the highlight of running the business so far? GS: The highlight for me is always when customers say that they love the website and what we sell – and fortunately that happens often, especially through Instagram. That’s why I do this, to bring beautiful, unique design items to customers that they wouldn’t otherwise find. ABS: How did you get to where you are now? GS: A lot of love, sweat and tears have gone into setting up and running Scandi Mini. From the very start I treated it as a full time job, a proper business if you like. I have never shied away from taking risks, whether it’s been buying large quantities

65 NH_JUNE16_SCANDIMIM.indd 65

ABS: And what's next? GS: I’d love to focus more on the things I truly enjoy doing (like buying) and less on the things I am not best suited to (accounting is one), which means hopefully expanding the team further. My main driving force has always been to inspire people and I hope I can expand my ability to do so even more in the future.  @scandiminis scandimini.co.uk

anama hats, strawberries and cream, champagne: the key components of a quintessentially British summer are all found in abundance on the sunny Sussex downs in late July, when the very finest thoroughbreds will return to battle over five “Glorious” days at The Qatar Goodwood Festival. With memories of magnificent victories at Royal Ascot still hanging in the air, trainers, jockeys and owners flock to the picturesque course to stake their claims for further glory. The five-day festival offers over £4.7M in prizes, attracting the Sport of Kings' very best.

But it isn’t just the equine talents on parade that give Goodwood its reputation as the summer’s most charming social event. The array of perfectly turned-out racegoers, oozing summer style and sophistication, is quite a sight to behold. Goodwood’s relaxed yet incredibly chic atmosphere allows for a more footloose approach to the dress code than Royal Ascot. Looking down from the lively

Perfectly turnedout RACEGOERS, oozing SUMMER STYLE and SOPHISTICATION

Owners and Trainers Pavilion, one can admire a sea of racegoers resplendent in colour and fabulous fabrics. Edward VII, the sharply dressed monarch credited with the switch from traditional top hat and tails to stress-free summer style, was spot on when he said the week feels like “a garden party with racing tacked on”. A party it most definitely is. Beside surveying the country's finest racehorses, blissfully contented racegoers drift between sun-drenched bars catching up with old friends who return to this enchanting social occasion each year. From Veuve Clicquot on the Richmond Lawn to the 1812 Bar within the March Stand – named after the family who own the estate – the course is packed with bars serving only the best summer tipples. And don’t forget the Magnolia Cup, the ladies’ charity race held on Ladies’ Day (Thursday). Well-known names take to the track in silks by the world’s most famous designers, such as Vivienne Westwood, Liberty of London and Roksanda Ilincic. Past winners include model Edie Campbell and Camilla Henderson, daughter of National Hunt racehorse trainer Nicky Henderson. This is one garden party that you would not want to miss. u The Qatar Goodwood Festival runs from Tuesday, 26 July - Saturday 30 July, 2016.

Pressure Drop Parents – leave those kids alone. At exam time, it’s best if we stay out of the way Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e

I

t’s exam period. A testing time for pupils and parents alike. But the one thing our children don’t need is any more pressure from us. Britain’s top private schools have reported an alarming rise in exam stress among pupils over the past five years — much of it caused by pressure from anxious parents. According to a survey by the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC), which represents the country’s most famous schools including Eton, Harrow and Westminster, 56% of heads polled said that pressure from home to get high grades was the biggest cause of exam-related stress. Nearly all head teachers (97%) said they were now asking parents into advice sessions and offering parenting classes on how to deal with the issue amid concerns that youngsters are buckling under the pressure. “Today’s teenagers are increasingly overwhelmed by the pressures they feel to succeed in life. There is no doubt that we — parents, teachers, friends — must come to their assistance,” Chris King, headmaster of Leicester Grammar School Trust and chairman of the HMC. “Parents — and I am one of them — need to keep a sense of perspective and try not to transmit our anxieties onto our children. The survey reveals that more than three quarters of schools are calling in therapists and all are offering counselling within school. Three-quarters offer mindfulness sessions and nearly half have laid on yoga classes. At Queen Anne’s, an independent girls’ boarding school in Caversham, Berkshire, pupils have been attending de-stressing workshops for the past year– and their grades in their mock

More than three QUARTERS of schools are CALLING IN THERAPISTS

GCSEs have gone up by up to two grades as a result. Pupils have been taught techniques such as deep breathing to calm themselves as well as learning how proper revision and planning can reduce the risk of panic during an exam. “Parents often inadvertently make their children more stressed,” says headmistress Julia Harrington. “They need a certain amount of stress to do well, but too much turns into anxiety, which floods the brain and makes them feel hopeless.” So what can parents do to help? Don’t take over. The most common complaint from teenagers, says Eileen Tracy, author of The Student’s Guide to Exam Success, is that parents – mainly mothers – are too involved and this makes them anxious and fearful of disappointing them. Be a non-intrusive, supportive

73 CHIS_June16_Education.indd 73

presence. Offer tea, toast and sympathy. Don’t nag them. Even seemingly anodyne comments can be corrosive. “Every time a stressed-out mother says, ‘Shouldn’t you be revising?’ the student gets a shot of adrenaline, which doesn’t make them want to work,” says Tracy. Avoid barbed comments. (“What, on instagram again?”), says Janey Downshire, from Teenagers Translated. Pass the responsibility back to them. “I tell my children that I don’t want them to regret not working hard enough. Ask what they would like from you. Be specific when you offer help. “Tell me three things I can do for you,” says Dr Carina Eriksen, a consultant psychologist who works in schools. “That way you are promoting a collaborative approach.” Don’t banish them to their bedroom for hours. Let them come home from school, let off steam and eat something nutritious. “Never believe a teenager until they’ve recharged their blood sugar levels,” advises Bernard Trafford, headmaster of the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle. He encourages his pupils to work for no more than an hour at a time. After this, “they need to move, stretch their legs, have a drink”. Following a few hours revising, they need fresh air: “Healthy mind in healthy body” is more important than ever at this time. Don’t ban them from the computer, says Harrington. “They might not be working but the chances are they are. The exam system has changed a lot — there is much more analysis and deep thinking now rather than rote learning of facts.” Don’t tell them their future depends on this exam. “It’s a parent’s job to give the wider picture: life doesn’t hang on any exam,” says Tracy. 

ROYAL TREATMENT Find the perfect luxury escape at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain Wo r d s s h e r i f s h a lt o u t

O

n stepping inside our luxury villa it is impossible not to let a sense of serenity and peace wash over me. As it turns out, this is exactly what The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain is all about. Located a mere 11 km from the airport, the hotel consists of a 245-room resort located on 20 acres of private beachfront encircling a beautiful lagoon of deepest blue. Of the nearly 250 rooms on offer, 31 are suites and 42 are Club Level rooms but the real jewels in The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain’s crown are the 23 stunning seafront villas. These each boast three bedrooms, a private pool, beach access and a 24-hour butler service ready to cater to your every whim. The interiors are inspired by 60s architecture, with vibrant colours, wood panelling and exposed beams. There is also a generous dollop of South American and Mediterranean influence which melds together to create a uniquely engaging environment. Although inspired by ‘60s cool, there is nothing old fashioned about the facilities; the entire villa is kitted out

with state-of-the art amenities designed to make a guest’s stay as relaxing as possible. Their only drawback? You may never want to leave. After wandering around for a good fifteen minutes, fiddling with airconditioning settings and leaping onto one of the softest beds I have ever encountered, I finally turn my attention to the view. From some parts of the resort, guests can see the Arabian Gulf; from our villa we are treated to a fabulous, unrestricted view of picturesque Manama Bay. The most striking characteristic of the villas, however is their tranquillity. Nestled amidst the lush greenery of the gardens, they feel secluded without being isolated and offer the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of modern life. I am also struck by the blend of sophisticated elegance and laid-back, beachy vibes in the design. Access to the water is also key. The Kingdom of Bahrain boasts beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures attracting holidaymakers year-round. So, being able to dip into the crystal

waters of the lagoon at any time is a luxury that cannot be overstated and one that is valued highly by visitors to The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. When I am finally able to tear myself away from the villa, I start to explore the resort. Aside from the lovely decor and the many restaurants (which I will expand on later), I am drawn to The Ritz-Carlton Spa. A reason to stay all on its own, the spa is a haven offering relaxing treatments and signature products to leave guests refreshed and restored. I am particularly impressed by the thalassotherapy pool, a large, warm, mineral-rich pool with hydrotherapy jets to ease away aches and pains, allowing visitors to emerge revitalised and oh-sorelaxed. There is also the usual spa offering of massages and beauty treatments but all with that specific Ritz-Carlton finish that seems to add a sheen of luxury and of going the extra mile. For anyone wishing to exert a little energy, there is a fully stocked gym and also beachfront tennis courts and an air-conditioned indoor squash court. I am even able to indulge in a little retail therapy in the shopping arcade as I wander.

Having worked up an appetite, I have a serious decision to make; The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain has a veritable smorgasbord of restaurants and bars on offer and all sound irresistible. La Med lays on a fabulously lavish buffet, while The Gourmet Lounge specialises in Old World classics with decor inspired by La Belle Epoque - a truly regal dining experience. If you’re looking for something a little more exotic then Nirvana is for you; Executive Chef Mahipal Singh creates tantalising dishes complemented by the rich, sultry decor all set to the live music of the ‘Santoor’. Primavera serves up excellent Italian while Plums is the place

to go for a really good steak. Lighter bites are available from La Plage, the resort’s poolside restaurant (perfect for a lazy lunch with plenty of wine) and from Thai Lounge. A quintessential afternoon tea can be had at The Lobby Lounge but my personal favourite is the Burlington Club where guests can stop for a cocktail and a fine Cuban cigar before or after dinner. Another aspect of the hotel that makes it a destination for travellers is the Club Level. This is designed to create the feeling of a ‘hotel within a hotel’, to extend an extra level of exclusivity, comfort and personalized service. It is located on two dedicated floors to ensure privacy and offers a separate lounge area with complimentary food and drink throughout the day. It is a wrench to leave at the end of my stay as weeks could be spent here without ever needing (or wanting) to venture out of the resort. The amenable staff, glorious design and excellent facilities without a doubt put The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain among the leading luxury hotels in the world. 

n the heart of historic Bath, The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa has emerged from a meticulous 2014 restoration as a 'British icon reborn'. The 45 luxuriously appointed suites and rooms, including three Master Suites, are among England’s most special places to stay, with the Georgian crescent’s magnificent sweep and giant ionic columns creating an astonishing sense of grandeur. Located in the centre of arguably the world's finest crescent, the hotel brings together elegant 18th century architecture with modern attention to detail, service and technology. No luxury hotel is complete without a spectacular culinary offering, and The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa is no exception. The AA 3 Rosette Dower House Restaurant overlooks the leafy and secluded gardens, and comes under the direction of Executive Head Chef David Campbell. It remains one of Bath’s best-kept secrets and offers fine dining throughout the year.

In the summer months, the sunny terrace and manicured lawns are the perfect setting for al fresco dining, where guests can sample one of five delicious Afternoon Teas accompanied by a flight of Taittinger Champagne, or unwind with a cocktail made by resident Master Mixologist, Orlando Garcia. For those seeking peace and tranquillity, the award-winning, newly regenerated The Spa & Bath House offers an unrivalled setting in which to experience world-class treatments. Spa-goers can enjoy the Vitality Pool, a Himalayan Salt Infused Sauna – incorporating the many natural healing properties of salt therapy – and a Blossom Steam Inhalation Room. Let’s take a walk down

WA LT O N STREET

T

he appearance of one of London’s most fashionable streets has changed very little in the last century. But the traders and amenities of Walton Street, running from the back of Harrods to the meeting of Draycott Avenue and Brompton Road, have altered considerably, and it has become a destination for fashion-conscious shoppers seeking goods for their homes, their families and their appetites. In Victorian times, it was a bustling belt serving residents of the new homes of Kensington and Chelsea, with two dairies, a butcher, baker, grocer, undertaker, haberdasher, watchmaker and coffee rooms. But Walton Street had not always been filled with busy footfalls and the clattering of horses’ hooves. Originally known as June Street, its current name comes from George Walton

Onslow, a trustee of Smith’s Charity Estate, which owned land on the road. But the site had been a grazing pasture before becoming a market garden, and then, in 1840, an exclusive cricket ground and skating rink. Walton Place, at the north end, was the first part of the street to be laid out on the grounds. St. Saviour’s Church was one of the earliest buildings, soon followed by twin terraces of nine houses, which remain almost unchanged since completion in 1844. The rest of the street was constructed in 1847, its stucco-fronted, modestly embellished buildings in marked contrast to the grandiose Queen Anne style of adjoining Pont Street, built three decades later. P.G. Wodehouse lived on the former, the formidable Aunt Agatha he created on the latter. While business burgeoned on Walton Street, it was not until the 1960s – after surviving wartime bombing – that further

significant development took place, with 36 houses appearing on the north side. The Queen visited Home Decorating and by the 1970s the street was establishing itself as the homemakers’ haven we recognise today, with a slew of specialist shops counting the Prince and Princess of Wales among their clients. Smart restaurants began to bloom too, despite Walton’s being bombed by the IRA in 1975, and Ma Cuisine received a Michelin star the same year. Today, the street’s boutiques, galleries, restaurants and bars attract locals as well as visitors from the rest of the capital, the country and the world. But 85% of the properties are still residential; although many of the residences are smaller flats, the average property price is over £2M, and in 2015 a house on Walton Street sold for £7.2M. A colourful past, a prodigious present, a promising future. Welcome to Walton Street.  3

Scalini

Mario Paggetti’s Walton Street restaurant continues the legacy of the London Italian, as he reveals to Absolutely

‘M

adonna mia,’ muttered Mario Paggetti. It was 1965, a couple of years since Mario came to Britain to learn English after catering school in Florence. He was working for £20 per week in a Bournemouth hotel – twice what he had earnt in Nottingham – when he first heard of La Trattoria Terrazza, the Soho restaurant making a name for itself. His Neopolitan colleague had told him he was too quick for Bournemouth, and that waiters at La Terrazza made £80. So they caught a train to London to ask for a job. That the manager was from the same corner of Tuscany was a colpa di fortuna. ‘You start tomorrow or you don’t start at all’. Mario was caught off guard, but it was worth ignoring his week’s notice and his lack of accommodation in London, for it set his course to become the Godfather of Italian cuisine in Knightsbridge. At a time when smart London establishments knelt at the altar of

French cooking and followed its strict and often complex commandments, La Terrazza was doing things differently. It opened after Franco Lagattolla and Mario Cassandro met in the early 50s, hankering after the food of their homeland and recognising that London had a surplus of highly skilled staff, in Britain for the same reason as Mario Paggetti. With this supply, Cassandro’s legendary people skills and Lagatolla’s kitchen oversight, the restaurant was soon attracting artists, Hollywood stars, showbiz correspondents and royalty. Part of that service was that waiters would take the bullet for diners when it came to cutting into the Pollo Sorpresa – the Italian equivalent of Chicken Kiev. So it was that the young Mario found himself accidentally jetting hot, garlicky oil all over the ‘beautiful jacket’ of Bruce Forsyth. Almost in tears, Mario began wiping, certain his job was over. The TV

star was a little perturbed, but said, ‘Don’t worry. I’ve got two more like this at home.’ And so Mario’s life at La Terrazza continued. Soon customers were asking to sit in ‘the ginger waiter’s station’. But it was here he learnt his craft as a proprietor, watching Lagattolla and Cassandro ‘like a hawk’. Noting how assiduous the former was with food standards and how welcome the latter made his guests feel, Mario felt growing confidence: ‘It was not if I will make it but when.’ Trattorias began spreading across London, almost exclusively at the hands of former employees or associates of La Terrazza using the same irresistible formula. Almost every well-known Italian restaurant in the city was spawned by it, and TV chefs like Antonio Carluccio and Gennaro Contaldo are the tip of iceberg when it comes to the Terrazza mafia. Mario has been involved in several of these restaurants, and over 35 years has opened six much-loved ones of his own. Scalini, opened on Walton Street in 1988, is every bit the traditional, welcoming trattoria. Service, food and décor owe much to Mario’s experiences in Soho. He and Valerio Calzolari, his partner and another colleague from La Terrazza, still help to manage Scalini today. Assisting General Manager Michel Lengui, the affable 79-year-old Mario’s knowledge and tales delight customers five days a week. And yes, in a reflection of Scalini itself, they do serve Pollo Sorpresa, only under a more romantic name.  1-3 Walton Street / 020 7225 2301 scalinilondon.co.uk

askells Estate Agents opened its doors in 1965 and moved to Walton Street in 1972 where it has been for 43 years. The firm was founded on the on the concept that understanding a clients’ needs and always seeking to exceed their expectations would create a long lasting and successful business. This relatively simple idea is one the office still focuses on after 50 years. In 2013 Maskells changed hands and a new team of young experienced professionals took the helm, guided by Stephen Copeman who had been with the firm for over 40 years. Stephen sadly passed away last year but had enough time with the new team to ensure they

M

understood what Maskells stood for. Maskells set up a new lettings department in 2013 headed by John D Wood veterans Peter Hermon-Taylor and Vashti Sperring. Vashti recognised that one of the biggest areas of complaints with landlords was property management, so she insisted that the whole team be based in the Walton Street building. This has led to huge efficiencies in service, much to the delight of landlords. The Sales Team, headed up by Jamie Hope, has recently been bolstered and the new team has grown the sales offerings while keeping a number of properties “off-market”, an area that Maskells has always been very active in.

WORDS

AS SOCIATE DIRECTOR Mountgrange Heritage

REBECCA NOONAN

I

moved to the W2 side of Notting Hill in the early 80s, although it was known as Bayswater back then. It’s been fascinating to see the transformation of the area over that time; houses were bought and sold in the ten’s of thousands rather than in millions. It’s wealthier neighbour Holland Park had always been popular and it was not long before the attributes of Notting Hill, with the fast links to the West End via the Central Line increased its standing as a place to live. Although some of the cherished local restaurants, shops and personalities have disappeared over the years, there are still plenty of gems that I hope will never fade away, especially the Churchill Arms on Kensington Church Street, my first taste of Thai food and the best pint of London Pride in RBKC. I began my career in St Johns Wood and then moved to the Hyde Park Estate, but it wasn’t long before I wanted to work in the area I knew and loved best. Notting Hill is a loose description of an area and has grown over time, it

It gives me so much joy to see so many familiar faces, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be

covers so many local hubs each with their own identity. From the classic stucco fronted houses overlooking communal gardens, to the Artesian Village with its grid of charming magnolia lined streets, to All Saints Road and east to Queensway. From my office in Kensington Park Road I’m walking the same streets I did some 30 years ago and it gives me such joy to see so many familiar faces. There’s nowhere else I'd rather be. Since the recent increases in SDLT, the cost of acquiring a property in a prime area has obviously had an effect on values. The upside of this is that the market is more transparent than ever. Pure investment is no longer the chief driver, as we are seeing more

traditional motives from our buyers. Given everything that Cameron and Osborne have thrown at this industry in the last year, referendums included, we are faring okay. Prices are down on the peak (7% to 10% by most measures) and volume is down 10% (possibly 15%), which has an effect on business. But stock levels are excellent, sellers have readjusted (on the whole) and buyers are keen to capitalise on the extraordinary finance deals available. The smarter buying agents are encouraging their clients to buy pre-Brexit, it’s all a question of readjustment and whether you want to take a punt on securing a pre-referendum, or get something on the bounce (if and when). Which reminds me of what a client said to me recently: ‘’If only I bought the flat above me in summer 2009!’’. Perhaps the old adage “be brave when others are fearful” has never been truer? Notting Hill will continue to prosper, it always has and it always will, and I look forward to many years of selling property in this very special part of the world. ◆

MOST SATISFYING TRANSACTION:

I was giving career advice to a local resident’s daughter who was interested in moving into estate agency. This led to me selling their family home and helping them downsize to a lovely flat in the area. By spending some time and getting to know them, I helped them make a huge decision that genuinely changed their lives.

Flat Sales Negotiator Strutt & Parker, Kensington atience and pricing are the key. Over recent months we have all read the newspapers saying that property sales are taking that much longer to come to fruition due to certain factors such as stamp duty, elections and the possible impact of ‘Brexit’. On the contrary, buyers who are out viewing are on the whole very focused and some see buying

P

Patience and a sensible price will bring results in this market now as an ‘opportunity’ before the expected rally post-EU Referendum. A recent sale we made just south of Kensington High Street is a prime example of this. There was a lot of interest and viewings as our client asked for a sensible price and the marketing strategy resulted with us achieving the asking price. The sale did take longer than it would have in the height of the market (first quarter of 2014), however the important point we made here was to highlight how there are buyers out there for properties which are sensibly priced. Patience and a sensible price will bring results in this market. ◆

asking price, and in the next viewing the house was let to a family relocating within the area on a long term tenancy. With the usual busy house market about to take off, our clients have found that our pre tenancy input works extremely well. Recently we have noticed that the quality of the finish is almost preferable to having more space, so appearance and pricing really are key! ◆

Q&A BEST SCHOOL

Part of Fulham’s lasting popularity stems from the quality schools in the area. All Saints Primary School is a particularly popular choice for many of our clients. WHAT TO DO ON A RAINY DAY

Come in and say hi to us, we’re on New King’s Road in Fulham. Or head to the trendy Harwood Arms for a drink Ω I’d recommend trying their delicious scotch eggs. BEST RESTAURANT

I have worked in the London property market for the last nine years, from Battersea to the Knightsbridge and Belgravia team. I love the market and have dealt with everything from small studio apartments to large mansions. ◆

VILLAGE LIFE Do you dream of village living?

N

This is a popular village with those wanting the country lifestyle in Cambridgeshire To identify the modern ‘good lifers’ Strutt & Parker categorised those moving to villages into different types. These include ‘the Downtons’ who are wealthy families who escape the city for a prime village house, and ‘Rusticarians’. These are young entrepreneurs who home work from a broadband bungalow or cyber cottage. And finally we

ew research shows the village is back in fashion as more of us turn our backs on the grit of urban survival. Mention villages to most Londoners and they may assume you’re talking about one of the capital’s urban ersatz. But according to research from Strutt & Parker, a fifth of the home movers want to live in a real village, away from the city. Escaping city life and embracing the country is a trend created by both high house prices in urban areas as well as the opportunities presented by home working, not to mention a desire to don wellies and waxed jackets. Other reasons, the research highlights, include lower living costs, a healthier lifestyle, more privacy and being closer to family and friends.

PROPERTY / RURAL RETREAT have the ‘rural newbies’; families looking for somewhere to raise their children. Those with a bucolic bent also want, outstanding countryside views (or sea views), walking trails, sporting facilities, cycling or biking trails and equestrian facilities, the research shows. They’re clearly a hard bunch to please. For Strutt & Parker it is simple – a community of between 3,000 and 10,000 houses. But for the vast majority of London families shipping out, close proximity to a train station is going to be essential. Here are three villages that come close pastoral perfection.

The Old Forge, Thruxton £575,000

GREAT SHELFORD

his is a popular village with those wanting the country lifestyle in Cambridgeshire but who also need to commute back to the City. It’s an hour and 20 minutes from Liverpool Street to Shelford station, which makes it just about commutable. The village’s treats include pubs, restaurants, banks, cycle shops, a deli, bakery and garden centre. What can you buy there? Try this five bedroom, high-spec house with a double garage and garden. It’s for sale with Strutt & Parker at £1,495,000 01223 459502.

T

THRUXTON

hruxton is an ancient village close to the A303 on which you’ll drive to Andover train station. From there trains can be caught to London Waterloo which takes an hour and 20 minutes. The village has a green, two pubs, a church, community hall and a school. A garden centre is scheduled to open soon, and there’s a petrol station cum farm shop in Weyhill, the next village along. What can you buy there? A four

SUTTON COURTENAY

his ravishingly beautiful village sits on the River Thames between Oxford and Didcot and is renowned as the home of Herbert Asquith, the prime minister who took Britain in the First World War. The village has a school, a village hall, cricket and football pitches and three pubs including a popular gastro pub. London is just 45 minutes away via Didcot, which is a short drive from the village. What can you buy there? This plot of land, which is on the market for £325,000, has planning permission for a five bedroom home almost on the water’s edge of the Thames. The Thames bimbles past the wonderful 1.4-acre plot. PROPERTY / DEVELOPMENTS NIGEL LEWIS

NEW HOMES R EG E N E RAT I O N

RADICAL MAKEOVERS?

he capital’s race to build more T homes is having an unexpected result for some of its less predictable neighbourhoods, says Nigel Lewis. High prices and fewer homes for sale in the most desirable parts of London mean areas that have been less fashionable for years, are getting makeovers and – more importantly for London’s accommodationstarved residents – new homes. Areas that buyers might have previously struck off their wish lists are now go-to areas. And the developers’ cranes are following suit, crowding once sleepy skylines with their one-legged swingers. Here we look at some of the areas being upgraded with both regeneration cash as well as new, gleaming apartments developments.

SOUTH: ELEPHANT & CASTLE

here were some tentative signs of regeneration in and around Elephant and Castle during the mid-noughties when an expensive improvement programme was announced and several high-profile new homes developments were built. But after these were completed, the recession put a stop to any new money coming in. It’s all now picking up again with £3 billion earmarked for the area. As well as a more pedestrianfriendly road layout, there are several new developments under construction including Elephant Park, a former council estate. It is to include a new shopping precinct, gardens, and 2,500 sustainable homes. Developer Lendlease has just launched its latest phase called Highwood Gardens, which comprises 307 homes surrounded by attractive courtyard gardens designed by leading landscape architects, Gillespies. The new apartments at Highwood Gardens are available from £540,000. For more information, call 020 3675 9955 or visit www.elephantpark.co.uk. u

CENTRAL: SOHO SQUARE

ou might assume Soho and regeneration wouldn’t go together given its West End location, but only recently has the area’s sleazier reputation begun to wear off – much to the horror of fans such as Steven Fry and Marc Almond, who want to stop what they call its sanitisation. The arguments over Soho centre around its retail makeover and the loss of the small, independent shops that make it so unique and, consequently, apartment developers are treading carefully. Rather than shiny new blocks, older properties are being upgraded. The most recent example is the Duke of Portland’s former townhouse on Soho Square. Built during the late 17th century, this Grade II listed property is now called 10, Soho Square, a development by Oakmayne Bespoke where just one apartment is left to purchase for £4.75 million. WEST: WHITE CITY

f you’ve been wondering exactly what’s going to happen to the former BBC HQ site at White City, then we can reveal all. The site is to retain a connection with the BBC – it’s Worldwide operation has already moved into a new HQ and three studios will still operate on the site. But the army of camera operators, presenters, and stressed producers will now be joined by 950 new homes and apartments, new cafés and restaurants, a cinema, offices and a new outpost of Soho House. The first phase of the development includes 432 homes, due for completion in 2018, where prices start at £700,000 for a one-bedroom apartment to £7 million for a penthouse. FAMOUS PLACES London hides a plethora of celebrity homes. These are the most recent to come on the market

ROTTEN PLACE TO BUY?

t’s four decades since punk spilled spitting and screaming onto our TV screen and the Sex Pistols’ released their debut single, Anarchy in the UK. Original band members Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock shocked TV interviewers and caused mayhem at concerts. But it didn’t last long. After touring the US, Rotten – real name John Lydon – left the band in 1978 and retreated to a house he’d just bought in Chelsea. Lydon, now 60, sold the five-floor property in 1981 when he moved to New York, and the building has since been divided up into two apartments, with a blue plaque outside to celebrate his time there. Back then the apartment on Gunter Grove had smoke-stained walls and a low-slung futon style couch, but it’s since had a makeover and is yours to rent for £1,295 a week. u Savills 0207 578 9020 www.savills.co.uk

nominated for a Grammy award. But after nine years together the band broke up, blaming internal conflicts. The singer has been ploughing his own furrow since then and has a new solo album out next month These People - with songs tackling topics such as the war in Syria, the Arab Spring uprisings and the death of a close friend. But it all started at Vernon Yard Recordings, an independent label owned by Virgin Records based in Notting Hill. The building was converted into houses, where a four bedroom mews house is now up for sale at £4.5m. u Domus Nova 0207 727 1717 www.domusnova.com

And it’s not the first time she has played feisty female characters. Before joining the period drama, she had parts in Doctor Who and After You’ve Gone, but has also produced movies including a short film starring Charles Dance. The actress also has an eye for property; she shared a penthouse flat with her brother in Pimlico before moving into her own pad, an interest that evidently runs in the family as her father John is chairman of the Groucho Club and part owns the Sloane Square hotel. The Lewis siblings’ flat is now up for sale at £2.25m. The three bedroom property in Warwick Square has views across the capital. u Jackson-Stops 0207 828 4050 www.jackson-stops.co.uk

SCENE OF A HITCHCOCK HOUSING DRAMA

aster of suspense Alfred Hitchcock got his first shot at directing in 1922 with the film Number 13. This and many of his early films were shot at Gainsborough Studios. However, at the start of WW2 the building’s chimney was deemed a liability during air raids, and the studio was sold in 1949. After starting life as a power station, then going into the movie business, the building in Hoxton has also been used as a whisky store, housed theatre productions, and a fashion show by Alexander McQueen. Much of it was demolished in 2002 and flats were built on the site, but as a nod to its cinematic past, you’ll find a huge sculpture of Hitchock’s head in the centre of the four apartment blocks.
