hristmas is upon us and this year it has come around pretty fast. Or does it always seem that way? This year, I will be hosting Christmas Day for the very first time. So for me, all this magazine research for decorations, gifts, food and wine has been entirely useful for my own purposes as I plan my festivities. In this issue we are recommending the baubliest baubles, the quirkiest advent calendars, the most lavish foodie hampers and the finest turkeys, as well as seeking out gifts of all kinds. And on my list? I'm after a Kindle, a Smythson diary and anything cashmere, since you ask. We're not exclusively all about Christmas this month, though. Our interview with south London's

5 DUL_Dec16_EDS_LETTER.indd 5

Orla Kiely focuses on design inspiration, nostalgia and fashion, while further afield, we visit the Galapagos Islands for wildlife encounters that are usually the stuff of television documentaries. Closer to home, we round up the finest places to ice skate in our city. Anyway, I’m off to make a wreath. Here's wishing a very merry Christmas to all our readers. ◆

Midcentury Matter Orla Kiely, queen of the nostalgic print, introduces her whimsical new fashion collection, L’Orla Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e

PENDLE HARTE: Tell us about L’Orla. What inspired it? ORLA KIELY: L’Orla is a way of developing ideas that otherwise might be too whimsical for our mainline collection. It was inspired initially as a creative collaboration between our long time stylist and Violet magazine editor Leith Clark and myself. When it comes to fashion, we are kindred spirits as we both have a love for all things 60s and 70s. PH: Which are your favourite pieces from the L’Orla collection? OK: That is a tricky question, as I love them all for different reasons, but I especially love our floral embroideries developed with expert weavers. The results are incredibly beautiful and the dresses are magic. The lace knits are also very pretty. It is hard to choose. PH: How does the second collection build on the first? OK: For the L’Orla collection this season we have been inspired by 70s Laura Ashley, the effortless romantic spirit of Celia Birtwell and classic American brand Gunne Sax. Our L’Orla ladies are Shelley Duvall, one of the quintessential 70s beauties, and Mary Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie, who was light years ahead in her layering and style. With these inspirations we have designed

our most feminine collection to date, with special floral embroideries on silk organza dresses and printed ditzy florals on Italian baby corduroy dungarees. Lurex knit scallop-patterned necklines combined with cashmere sweaters. Playing with contrasting prints make for a modern day romantic spirit. PH: You have been involved in lots of collaborations. Are there any more to come? OK: We have been incredibly lucky to work with some great partners on different projects. We are continually developing something special.

PH: You’re known as much for your homewares as your fashion. Which is closer to your heart? OK: Orla Kiely – the company – developed from a passion for mid-century design and print. This has informed all aspects of our product, from the ready-towear collections, fragrance, beauty, handbags, watches, jewellery, homewares, wallpapers and more. My style has always remained clean, simple, measured, bold and brave, evolving each year with new designs and distinctive prints. It's about capturing a new spirit each season, which speaks to women everywhere. For me, it is this complete picture we create that I love, the way our customer lives her life, through our love of colour and pattern, we reinvent the every day, and make it a little more special. PH: You have spoken out against consumer excess. Do you think we should all stop shopping? OK: No, we should not stop shopping but we should definitely be more selective and considered when buying something. It should be functional and beautiful, which I always keepO in mind when designing a product. PH: You have previously mentioned your childhood kitchen as an inspiration. What was it like?

SHELLEY DUVALL: 'ONE OF THE QUINTESSENTIAL 70S BEAUTIES'

My inspirations will always be FIRMLY BASED IN THE 50s, 60s & 70s PH: What other interiors do you admire? OK: I am devoted to beautiful mid-century interiors and wrote a book dedicated to the subject, called Home. My favourite houses are featured, such as Seigel House in Nottingham, Scheer House, Vila Bendvold and Brabrand House in Denmark are quite remarkable in their design and simplicity. PH: As a mother, how do you find time to combine your work and home life? OK: My two sons are young men now and studying at university, but while they were growing up, it was a tricky balance. Having the right support made things much easier. It was a team effort, always a joy. PH: Childrenswear seems to be missing from your collections. Are there any plans for that? OK: You never know what might be around the corner!

ORLA KIELY

OK: Growing up in Ireland in the 1970s had a great influence on my creative vision. My 1950s modernist family home, my mother’s great style, the area we lived in Dublin, just two minutes from the beach, close to the greenest fields and the mountains too. All this natural beauty and modernist style influenced my taste for colour and design. PH: There’s a lot of nostalgia in your designs. Why is that? OK: My inspirations will always be firmly based in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Those were times of great films, innovative design in all fields and, of course, the unforgettable music that remains so influential to this day.

'MARY INGALLS FROM LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE WAS LIGHT YEARS AHEAD IN HER LAYERING AND STYLE'

19 NH_Nov16_ORLA KIELY.indd 19

PH: Can you tell us about the house you live in? Is it filled with your own designs? OK: I live in south London with my husband and my two dogs Olive and Ivy, my home has a very mid-century aesthetic. I have combined vintage furniture from fairs with products we have made. Our wallpaper prints, cushions and a special mohair blanket are to be found in the living room. In the kitchen our tableware adds something special at dinner times, and our towels in the bathrooms add some extra colour and pattern to everyday life. u

ashmere is top of everyone's wish list at this time of year, and newcomer Delam is a luxe knitwear boutique with a global story. All yarns are Italian – the finest cashmere – and the dyes are Iranian. Ancient techniques applied to tribal Gabbeh rugs are used to create organic colours with an irregularity in appearance that delivers a collage effect, making each piece unique. The dyes come from native plants and roots such as pomegranate skin; the yarns are hand-dyed and left to dry in the sun in Iran before being sent

back to Italy for knitting. 'Each piece is as unique as the person wearing it,' says Delam founder Lili Di Michele. The colours are subtle yet rich – all intriguing shades named things like Sumac Red and Walnut Brown, while sweaters and cardigans come in stylish shapes. There are bell sleeves, various different cuffs, flattering hems and lots of feminine designs, all reworking the traditional sweater. Delam - meaning 'my heart' promises to 'tell stories through colour' and these luxurious pieces will capture hearts in London and beyond. u delamlondon.com

s anyone with an ombre knows, returning to your natural colour isn’t easy. Dying your entire head a shade similar to your roots is pointless, not to mention damaging, while colour-matching your ends to the top is almost impossible. It’s catch 22. The only option, as senior stylist Sam at Myla and Davis Brixton explained to me, is to dye a shade in between the two. With this agreed, we set to work. Sam coats the blonde parts of my hair, while I sit back with coffee and a couple of niche magazines. Decked out in mid-century furniture, indoor plants and reclaimed wooden fixtures, the salon itself feels like the kind of place where you can take a few

THE KIND of place YOU CAN TAKE a few hours OUT FROM LIFE... hours out from life. What’s even better is while everyone here is super friendly, they don’t enforce small talk, so you can happily sit in your own little bubble. Following the first dye and wash, Sam cut the smallest amount possible off my ratty ends and layers before applying a darker toner to the newly burnt caramel ombre. Using Bumble and Bumble Hairdressers Invisible Oil throughout, my fresh cut and chocolatey colour was as smooth, soft and shiny as it could be. An all-round lovely experience that I certainly want to repeat.

HEALTH & BEAUTY / FRAGRANCE

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE What’s the smell of Christmas? W o r d s L aw r e n c e R o u l l i e r W h i t e

W

hen it first launched in 1994 I had never smelled anything quiet like Etro’s Messe de Minuit. Although it includes one of the oldest perfume ingredients known to man, I had never before experienced frankincense being used so prominently in a scent. Though it is used mainly in the base of a fragrance to anchor and add longevity to the blend, anyone who has ever attended Catholic or High Anglican Midnight Mass will identify frankincense as the smell of Christmas. A few years earlier in 1991, in a similarly devout vain, Caron released Parfum Sacré, this time tinged with floral top notes. La Liturgie des Heures by Jovoy is one of the most successful of this ecclesiastical oeuvre, with fresh green top notes and the incense full-bodied and smoky in the middle. Comme des Garcons launched its series of perfume projects; Parfums Series, in 2000. In 2002 Series 3 Incense was devoted to the world’s religions’ practice of burning fragrant resins. Comme des Garcons: Series 3: Avignon conjures the 12th century Catholic cathedral of the city and is a celestial masterpiece by genius perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour. Rose may not be a smell overly associated with Christmas, and despite appearing in

SADLY, the official smell of CHRISTMAS SEEMS to have become a disastrous MEDLEY the top and middle of the scent, the name of Byredo’s Rose of No Man’s Land actually refers to the nurses who worked in the trenches of the First World War. At this time of year we remember an extraordinary episode in military history, when late in the evening of Christmas Eve 1914, British troops on the Western Front heard German

35 DUL_Dec16_Perfume.indd 35

soldiers singing carols, and as the sun came up both forces met in the middle of no man’s land, exchanged giftsand played a Christmas morning game of football. This poignant moment in history seems fittingly marked by the fragrance. Sadly, the ‘official’ smell of Christmas seems to have become a sugary soup of cinnamon, clove and orange, a pretty disastrous medley to my mind. Oranges, however, have to figure highly this time of year. We may all be too young to remember that the original Christmas stocking would contain an orange – and maybe a few pennies – because oranges were exotic and a treat. Cologne Bigarade by Jean-Claude Ellena for Frédéric Malle is, in my opinion, one of the most successful fragrances ever made. Using all parts of the orange tree; the blossom, the fruit, the leaves and the wood, it is a true triumph of a perfectly perceived and expertly executed scent. Hermès Eau d’Orange Vert by Françoise Caron is a beautiful bitter orange. Equally delicious is Naranjos by Barcelona's Ramón Monegal. This scent is rare in the UK, even by rare perfume standards. The line is exclusive to Harrods, but the store does not carry Naranjos. Now you know what to bring back from your next trip. Walking through a winter wonderland was never more perfectly olfactorily explained than by Sarah McCartney in her 4160 Tuesdays’ scent Doe in the Snow. Made for the winter wedding of perfume aficionado Lizzie Ostrom – AKA Odette Toilette - Doe in the Snow has all the crispness you would expect from such an icy sounding scent with a little fruity glamour and wisp of winter woods. Finally, if you are looking for a true fireside scent, the dark glowing embers, rather that the searing flames, seek out birch as an ingredient. The tarlike quality of birch adds a blackness to scent, as described perfectly by Leo Crabtree in his Cœur de Noir by BeauFort London. City on Fire by Imaginary Authors is another great tribute to tar as is Burning Barbershop by DS & Durga. 

Casa Coste Piane Organic Prosecco, Italy Why Because who doesn’t kick off Christmas celebrations with a glass of sparkling? What An organic Prosecco made the same way as Champagne from a tiny vineyard in the heart of Prosecco land. Clean and fresh sparkling with so much character and flavour. At just 11% alcohol, it works as the perfect aperitif.

WHITE

Evolution White 18th Edition, Oregon, USA Why Because it has 9 different grape varieties in it. What Organic white blend from the beautiful region of Oregon founded by husband and wife Bill and Susan Sokol Blosser who have run the estate since 1977. Instead of using pesticides they have a resident flock of bluebirds who keep the insect population in check.

RED

Les Escures Malbec, Fabien Jouves Cahors, France Why Because winemaker Fabien Jouves is young, hungry and not scared to tell the traditionalists they’re wrong. What Malbec originates from Cahors in France – and not Argentina, where it has become famous. Try this beautiful, elegant and organic version to taste how good this grape variety can be. I love this red because it’s so drinkable and not the kind of red that will put you to sleep after a glass.

FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEW

LIVELY and

indulgent - it’s no ORDINARY riverside RETREAT

THE TEA MERCHANT Canary Wharf strikes gold with this quintessential gastropub Wo r d s J u l i a K r u p s k a

N

o weekend wind-down is complete without a visit to The Tea Merchant. Residing in the heart of the capital’s futuristic pocket - Canary Wharf this quintessential blend of British pub and gourmet restaurant means the space itself, with its awry mashup of mismatched furniture, oak panels and hidden nooks, is nothing short of cosy. Indoor foliage, staggered photo frames and western touches all add

to the hustle and bustle of the interior, which is noticeably echoed by its vibrant clientele - the tavern is filled with suited-up city workers channeling the very essence of work hard, play harder. We’re seated in a booth to the right of the restaurant, a little closed off from the madness but by no means missing out. A spirited atmosphere isn’t the only indulgence, the high-calibre menu is carefully crafted and will appeal to even the fussiest of eaters. I start with buffalo mozzarella - a sweet fusion of fresh beetroot

43 DUL_Dec16_Food_Review.indd 43

and orange slice, offset by chewy mozzarella and pumpkin seed crunch. It’s a total winner, ticking all the boxes from nutritious to delicious. My companion selects pork rillettes, a sublime combination of pulled pork, pickles, Golden Pride sourdough and raisin purée - a moreish meat-meets-fruit dish. For mains I ask for a recommendation - I’m told the slow-braised ox cheeks are an ideal winter warmer. Hearty meat, roasted shallots and divine creamed potato are something of a pub classic, though here it has been elevated to a new standard and presented beautifully. I can’t stop myself from scraping at my plate until there is nothing left - not ideal when you already have, and are still intending to, taste a large portion of the menu. Desserts are both classics. Stuffed and content, we choose sticky toffee pudding and honey cheesecake, the latter an alternative blend of cinnamon and hazelnut praline. They’re both creamy, succulent and embody all that a heavenly pudding should be. From ambience to food, company to drinks, not to mention a riverside location which offers up a mesmerising view, The Tea Merchant is the perfect place to hibernate this winter. u

t’s almost impossible to describe how bizarre a cruise around the

archipelago of Galápagos really is. Unlike a jungle safari or rainforest trek, the animals here are like actors, ready and waiting for their audience to arrive. Step off the speedboat onto one of these deserted islands, and within seconds you’re standing in between a sea lion and marine iguana, neither of them at all affected by the dozens of cameras pointed in their direction. With less than 250,000 people visiting the archipelago each year, this is the trip of a lifetime and it doesn’t disappoint with impossibly white sands, turquoise seas and black lava rock setting the scene for even more incredible animals. With many islands uninhabited by humans, it’s easy to believe you’re the first to walk the unspoiled land and discover what Metropolitan Touring like to call the Galapagos Big 15 (see sidebar). As the original inspiration behind Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, explained in revolutionary work The Origin of Species, the volcanic islands are a constant source of mystery and

intrigue for naturalists and tourists alike. As a result, days spent aboard the Santa Cruz II ship start early with a 7am wake up call Ω unheard of while on holiday Ω but setting an earlier alarm to watch the giant sun rise up from the sea is a good idea. While the landscape is beautiful it’s the wildlife people come to see. While some of the animals are endemic to a particular island Ω such as the world’s only flightless cormorant that can only be found on Fernandina and Isabela Ω sea lions in Galapagos are so common the locals calls them dogs. Swimming with the adults and their pups around Santa Fé, however, is something I’ll never forget. Resurfacing from pacific, I couldn’t wipe the smile from my face - until I looked back down. There, right below me, were two white-tipped sharks. Even though they’re completely harmless, their jawslike silhouette still took my breath away. Thankfully for those who can’t bare the thought of swimming in the depths of the ocean, the Santa Cruz II has its own glass bottom boat so no one misses out. Back on land, the flat places of Española are particularly special. As

the sole breeding ground for the entire population of the world’s waved albatross we stumbled across three of the giant birds performing their mating dance. Famed for their hilarious drunken waddle and intricate mating ritual, we watched on as we the male clacked beaks with both females; evidently the albatross men are just as indecisive as their human counterparts. The views found at Española are also the best with black lava rock and jagged cliffs creating a prehistoric landscape like nothing else. No sooner than we sat down on the rocks, a blowhole erupted in front of us; it seems there is no end to the wonders of Galápagos.

THE GALAPAGOS 15 Ecuadorian food highlights include lapingacho (fried potato cakes made with quesillo cheese, cooked on the griddle till golden, and served with chorizo and avocado). These are so good we’d rush to breakfast in hope that they were waiting but alas, they were a one-time thing. For lunch, the hearty locro soup is must-eat national dish. The warming and delicious potato stew is a classic corn, bean and potato soup that you top with avocado, cilantro and cancha corn nuts. To experience all Ecuador and the Galápagos have to offer, you logistically need nine days. We flew in to Quito

Step into CHARLES DARWIN’S SHOES and EXPERIENCE it all as he found it in 1535 and stayed in the beautiful 5* boutique hotel Casa Gangotena for two nights. Overlooking the Plaza San Francisco in the Historic Center, the mansion begins to feel like an extremely lovely second home. From here we flew to Baltra airport before boarding the Santa Cruz II. After four nights out at sea, we arrived at the Finch Bay Hotel which was a welcome return to dry land. This chic ecolodge is set on the beachfront of Puerto Ayora and has the most incredible pool so we made the most of the opportunity to relax and happily sat poolside with a mojito in hand. This is the way to travel for sure. While there’s no denying the entire trip was luxurious Ω with giant beds, wifi and a seemingly endless supply of pisco throughout Ω those onboard the Santa Cruz II still made it feel like we were one of the first to visit the archipelago. After all, isn’t that the point? To step into Charles Darwin’s shoes and experience it all as he found it in 1535. u

e love making Christmas accessories for the home, so we created a wreath that fits through the letterbox and is easily assembled in minutes – as it’s already decorated for you! If, however, you want to make your own wreath at home, the first step is to find components that are local and will last. Pine cones, dried fruit and winter blooms are our favourites, so we’ve got birch branches, skimmia berries and leaves as well as pine cones. Cinnamon sticks and dried flowers work well too, depending on the decor of your home.

e always recommend W adding foliage to the base first and building from there. Wiring stems (1) is simple, just thread some thin floral wire through the stem base. From there you can add each skimmia branch one by one, each facing in the same direction around the wreath (2). ire your oranges next W (3), at the edge of the rind so that the wire is less visible. We nestle the oranges into each bunch of skimmia (4) and add the pine cones on top of the oranges. By doing this we create a hierarchy: larger additions at the rear, more delicate additions towards the front. Repeat the wiring for your pine cones (5) and nestle into the dried orange (6). dd final touches, like the birch (7) and your bow (8). Keep your wreath in a cool place and it should last for over a month.

here's always one present that trumps everything else on Christmas Day. Sometimes it's entirely by virtue of being bigger, or even just having the biggest box. Alternatively, it can be something spectacular, something that gets played with all day and maybe makes a lot of noise or surprises everyone. Previous winners have included electric train sets, Skalextric, the dreaded Furby. For us last year it was an enormous wooden sledge, wrapped in a box as big as a grandfather clock. This year, the money's on this Deep Space marble run. It requires no batteries and is virtually impossible to break but allows for hours of fun, first in the building of an elaborate 3D structure out of 176 wooden pieces, and then in the playing with it, mostly because it glows in the dark. Suited to children aged six and up, this is a non-screen based, low-tech toy that will keep them busy beyond Boxing Day. 

This ethos made it very easy for us to align our company with Cray Wanderers’. Club Chairman, Gary Hillman, was delighted to agree on the deal with Acorn and pointed out that Cray Wanderers’ involvement in grassroots football is key to the success of the club. ‘The boys and girls our community team work with are undoubtedly where the stars of the future will come from’. u

NIGEL LEWIS

GENTRIFICATION Has gentrification had its day?

I

f you’re a Londoner, then you’ll be familiar with the signs of gentrification. Skips breeding like rabbits, old pubs going gastro, branded coffee shops on every corner and estate agents lining the high street. You can see it in so many places. Current hotspots include Balham, Streatham, Kings Cross, Kensal Rise, Canning Town, Hoxton, Stoke Newington, Elephant and Castle, Peckham Rye and central Croydon, according to Richard Rogerson, CEO of property consultant RFR. It wasn’t always like this. Those who aren’t millennials may remember when gentrification was short-hand for a neighbourhood inching its way out of poverty, and how only a decade ago the wealth differences between areas was less pronounced. But not now. Many young Londoners see gentrification as a consequence of social inequality, and politicians are taking note. This includes mayor Sadiq Khan, who said recently that there were ‘growing concerns’ about the phenomenon.

Many young Londoners see gentrification as a consequence of social inequality “Gentrification can be a bit of a dirty word,” says Nic Whitten, head of research at agent JLL. “The dictionary definition is ‘wealthier residents moving into an area, and the changes that occur due to that influx of wealth at the expense or displacement of lower income existing residents’, so you can see why some people aren’t keen on it.” But whether you’re hoping for more artisan bread shops and boutique housing developments, or conversely think gentrification should be banned, it’s worth considering how it works. WHAT IS GENTRIFICATION? irstly, there’s the organic kind. This occurs in areas on the fringes F of already wealthy ones as those who can’t afford to live in the prime streets move to adjacent zones, pushing up house

Elephant Park aerial view

prices and changing the local retail landscape. It’s a process now taking place in Balham and Tooting, just down the road from fashionable Clapham, for example. The other kind of gentrification is by design, a model that Sadiq Khan is most worried about. It is created by large-scale new homes, often in partnership with the local authority. “Developers often get a bad reputation when they move into an area, so it’s up to us to reassure local people that we’re not coming in with a bulldozer to destroy their community and that we have a genuine interest in working with them to make places better,” says Rebecca Wakefield of developer Banda Property. Do house prices rise as gentrification set in? “We recently looked at nine big regeneration including Kings Cross, Elephant & Castle, Canning Town and parts of Ealing all of which have had at least 1,000 homes added by developments,” says Nic Whitten. “Our research shows that this lifted local house prices on average by 40.5% over and above the normal growth you'd expect, which was over a five-year period.” DO COFFEE SHOPS CREATE GENTRIFICATION? I don’t think people build coffee shops and then the customers come, it's the other way around,” says Nic Whitten. “You do get early retail adopters among the big chains who will try and get in early, but really the local high street adapts to the new locals’ increased disposable income.”

CAN ANYTHING BE DONE TO STOP IT? ne argument put forward by O Richard Rogerson of RFR is that local people should benefit from the new opportunities that gentrification brings to an area, rather than feeling they are victims of it, and that problems occur “when the community feels [the area] is changing beyond recognition,” he says. u

IN THEIR OWN

WORDS

Javaid Ahmed SALES MANAGER

Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward

REBECCA NOONAN

I

entered the world of estate agency in 1994, working as a Saturday boy whilst reading Mechanical Engineering at University. In the summer of 1996, a week after my final exams, I was called in by the manager who asked what I was doing over the summer. Having not yet received my results I told him I had nothing planned, to which he said “How would you like to work here?” That was over 20 years ago and I have never looked back. I have worked in the Forest Hill branch of KFH for almost four years and have been with the company since 2004. I can honestly say there is no other agent in London that I would work with. People say that after divorce, moving house is the most stressful thing people go through. In Forest Hill it is most often families who are moving, and adding children into this mix probably does not help stress levels - being a father of five I can certainly sympathise. I do find problem solving and getting clients’ stress levels down

I do find problem solving and getting clients’ stress levels down incredibly fulfilling

incredibly fulfilling, particularly when it is a difficult sale. Forest Hill is truly one of south east London’s best kept secrets and one of London’s hidden gems. At Canvas & Cream, located in the heart of Forest Hill’s creative hub, you can appreciate the artistic flare the area has to offer. The owners have given local artists a platform to exhibit their work in a fun, buzzing atmosphere. The independent shops like Canvas & Cream, Sugar Mountain, the old school sweet shop, and Il Mirto, the local delicatessen, all help make Forest Hill unique. While the great transport links into the West End and City of London make Forest Hill a popular location for those who

work in central London, it is the diversity of people, the variety of housing stock and the contrasting skylines that are its best qualities. The area has something to suit almost all budgets, with our current instructions ranging from £225,000 to £1,500,000. The architecture varies from Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian, to 1930s, 1960s and super modern properties, ensuring that all tastes are catered to. At the top of Canonbie Road, there is an uninterrupted panorama of the London skyline to the north and views down to Kent in the south. If you have the opportunity and the time, I would encourage you to turn off the South Circular and discover the area for yourself. I hope to be selling houses here for many more years to come and would love for Forest Hill to preserve its identity. One of the nicest things about being an estate agent is simply being a part of people’s lives. Whether someone is getting a foot on a rung of the property ladder, looking for a family home or downsizing, it’s so rewarding being able to help people take their next step. u

GOOGLE SEARCHES Where are London’s most searched for areas?

H

alf a century ago the last place many wealthy Londoners wanted to live in was central London. Bombed out streets and a reputation for ‘pea soup’ fogs persuaded many to flee to the suburbs. But over the past 20 years this trend has been turned on its head. Central London is now world famous for its luxury homes and prime prices as both UK and overseas buyers fight over the capital’s central neighbourhoods. So which are the most sought after? Look online and the internet is awash with advice on where to live. But let’s be honest, they’re based on opinion, not fact; one person’s neighbourhood nirvana can be another’s least likely locality. How therefore do you find out if Mayfair is more sought after than Marylebone, Clapham more popular than Chelsea and whether Peckham has a steal on Paddington these days? One organisation that knows the answer is Google. Every week thousands of us search for homes, property, houses and apartments in London. And if you work in the digital economy, you’ll know Google tracks who searches for what. I logged on to find out the most popular searched-for areas during September. u Three bedroom semi on Musgrave Crescent, £2.95m. Savills Bishops Park, 020 7578 9050

1. Islington

AVERAGE PRICE £747,100 2,602 SEARCHES

Why so popular? Famed for many years as THE fashionable haunt of London’s political set, it has been a prosperous area since the early 19th century. Today the borough covers areas including Kings Cross, Angel, Clerkenwell, Highgate and Tufnell Park.

2. Fulham

AVERAGE PRICE £1,036,432 2,226 SEARCHES

Why so popular? This family-friendly bulge of neighbourhoods has been a sought-after haunt of lawyers, advertising executives and media stars for over 30 years. But its areas still reflect the original villages that once dotted the landscape including Fulham Town, Parsons Green, Walham Green, North End and Sands End.

3. Wandsworth

AVERAGE HOUSE PRICE £741,957 1,849 SEARCHES

Why so popular? Wandsworth Town is quickly being revamped as a plethora of new luxury developments pop up, and the town centre may soon join its surrounding commons as a prime area of London. From the 14th century until very recently (when the Ram brewery shipped out) Wandsworth was a largely industrial zone.

4. Richmond

AVERAGE HOUSE PRICE £782,126 1,763 SEARCHES

Why so popular? Residents of Richmond might be surprised to know that the town was named by Henry VII after his favourite and eponymous earldom in Yorkshire and that is is where both he and later royals liked to escape London’s smoke. Not much has changed on that front, and Richmond and its fabulous deer park are still prized by London commuters and their families.

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

Dul_Dec16_Google_1pp_use.indd 82

5. Mayfair

AVERAGE HOUSE PRICE £3,017,000 1,513 SEARCHES

Why so popular? Mayfair may be a small patch of central London but what it lacks in size it makes up for in fame and luxury. To own a home within the W1 postcode requires the deepest of pockets and rightly so – not only is it a residential area in the heart of London but it also contains elements of the capital’s greatest estates including such famous land-owning families such as the Burlingtons, Berkeleys, Curzons and Grosvenors.

6. Victoria

AVERAGE HOUSE PRICE £1.6 MILLION 1,481 SEARCHES

Why so popular? Few people realise the area around Victoria station was, until Thomas Cubitt got his teeth into it during the 1840s and 1850s, a swampy and dangerous place most famous for its brewery and abbey. Such affiliations were banished when the area was rebuilt by the Grosvenor Estate and Buckingham Palace extended. These days the streets around Victoria station including those in Pimlico and particularly Ebury Street are still much prized.

7. Westminster

AVERAGE HOUSE PRICE £1.3 MILLION 1,433 SEARCHES

Why so popular? Many people were surprised when it emerged recently that Sting and his wife Trudy had sold their nine bedroom terraced house near Downing Street for £19 million. But the couple were clearly not the only ones to seek a bolthole in the area around Parliament, as it’s a perennial favourite within Google searches. 
