During the Covid years, I was out of work for a few months and rather than laze around and binge on Netflix, I decided to indulge in a passion of mine and take a personal training course.

The human body truly is remarkable. I am not going to lie, it was a struggle to learn about all the muscles the body possesses, but what a thrill to be able to come up with detailed fitness plans and a food diary to back up the effort exerted in the gym. As a result, I have probably never felt as fit as I do now in my 40s.

Even though our main features in this month's health special were not written by me, they all have some relevance to either what I have gone through in life or still have an interest in, so I hope you feel the same way too. I always get sick when I go on holiday, but it seems as if I don't start preparing early enough; there's the superfoods you need to be eating right now – and dark chocolate is in there; and tips on how to recognise and deal with stress, something that has often reared its head for me personally. Hopefully the issue will make you feel a whole lot better.

WHERE the MAGIC HAPPENS

Jessie Cave is returning to stand up this month at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, but the actress and writer who made her name in Harry Potter says expect the unexpected

Interviewing Jessie Cave is a rather strange experience. For starters, it’s di cult to know what angle we should begin with – acting, writing, artist, comedian? Jessie’s response is none of the above. “Today, and more recently, I’m a full-time mother who does shows,” she says simply. Knocking Absolutely slightly o course, we gather our senses and focus on the shows aspect, especially considering this month marks her return to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

An Ecstatic Display will see Jessie talk about her life and why she’s more than happy it isn’t what people would describe as traditional. It’s also not straight-forward enough to call it stand up. “I would say it’s not stand up comedy, and it’s not character comedy, and it’s not a puppet show – but does contain puppets,” she laughs. “It is funny, but it is sad. It is a little messy, but it’s been carefully planned. It’s a show about the beauty and joy, chaos and despair of motherhood and long-term romantic relationships.”

Why did she want motherhood to take centre stage? “I write about my life, and sharing the more positive aspects of the motherhood journey is quite rare at the

moment. I feel like, in general, it’s negatively displayed right now on social media, and I believe motherhood is a privilege and a worthy, magical sacrifice,” she says. “I’ve been working and adapting and tweaking the show for over a year, with delightful audiences. Some shows have been mad, some have been quiet, some have been ecstatic.”

It all suggests An Ecstatic Display will be one to watch when it opens on 31 July. Reading a recent round up of the must-see shows in Edinburgh, Jessie was a part of that list, so the buzz is building. But for Jessie, the return to Edinburgh is tinged with tragedy. “I did my last show in 2019, which was the year my younger brother Ben died,” she says. “I didn’t feel like doing comedy for a while, as it felt like that part of my life was over. I did more serious things, like writing a novel and podcasts. It feels like the right time for me to express myself again comedically, and to remind myself that there is still joy to be had, even when things are still sad.”

The loss of Ben was the catalyst to develop another part of Jessie’s career. A successful show had already been transferred to book format with Sunrise, but Sunset was Jessie’s debut novel and it became an instant Sunday

Times Bestseller. “I was very grateful that people read it; even if a few people had read it I would have been thrilled,” she reflects on that fact. “It’s important to read more stories about the reality of grief. It’s not linear. Each loss is di erent. The book has struck a nerve because it’s messy and raw and there is not much literature out there (that I could find) about sibling loss.”

It’s a compelling story. Ruth and Hannah are sisters. Bonded by love and friendship, they are perplexingly di erent characters. Hannah is radiant, organised and hard working. Ruth is forever single and totally aimless, but together they are invincible. Every summer they go on a budget holiday together where they bicker, laugh, fight and make up. But this time is di erent. Something bad happens – and now everything is changed

forever... This bittersweet love story is about needing someone else as much as they need you. It is an ode to our most powerful bonds, how they build us and break us, and how, when all seems lost, we can find joy in the most unexpected places. It showcased just what a powerful writer Jessie is.

Before the above, however, was Lovesick where we got to see the artistic side of Jessie Cave. Published in 2015, it was a book of doodles about love, rejection and pining –and developed such a fanbase that she now sells her prints. And, rather apt considering Lovesick, the initial route into art was one that involved rejection. “I followed a boy to art school. He didn’t like me back, but I’m glad I started doodling my way through rejection,” she says, before describing her work as: “Honest. Full of love. Unrefined. DIY.”

We have got through quite a lot and Harry Potter hasn’t come up once. You sense Jessie is quite happy about that as her life and career have moved on in great strides since she starred as Lavender Brown in the major series that was filmed in Hertfordshire. Ask her about her acting highlight and she responds: “My favourite role recently was in a period drama called Miss Scarlett and the Duke. I liked wearing a corset, even though I was quite pregnant.”

We have also seen her in the likes of Black Mirror, Trollied and Pride, and recently she starred in ITV2 sitcom Bu ering. The screen work has evolved, too – her presenting debut was helming CBBC’s Britain’s Best Young Artist

Even though we have no idea where she finds the time, she has also entered the world of podcasts, which includes the mothering focused Whenever It Kicks and We Can’t Talk About That Right Now with her sister Bebe Cave. “I have just started making a podcast with the father of my children,” she adds, “which I’ve been trying to get started for years. I love it as we get to talk about topics we don’t get to reach when getting our four kids to eat or sleep.”

Her next novel is in progress too, but for now Edinburgh is calling. Jessie has probably been the most eclectic interviewee we have had in Absolutely for some time, but it makes perfect sense when you see her on stage. If you can’t make it to Edinburgh, never fear. Asked what’s next, Jessie says: “A little break, a reset and then I will tour it next year, whilst working out what I would like to write next.” Whatever happens, expect something a little di erent.

The stu y confines of an airplane cabin are the perfect breeding ground for germs, especially if you’re cooped up for two to three hours at a time. so make sure this makes it into your hand luggage. A.Vogel Echinacea Lozenges are particularly flightfriendly, but you should ideally start to prime your immune system two to four weeks before you travel. Molkosan Fruit Drink, for example, can help establish the right environment within which important infection-fighting bacteria can flourish, revitalising your digestive system. Don’t

eat anything that looks undercooked or raw and avoid bu et food that may not have been kept at the right temperature. By far the most common cause of tummy trouble abroad, and diarrhoea especially, is dirty or contaminated water. Only drink bottled or canned drinks and don’t assume the tap water in your hotel is safe to drink. Remember also not to use ice in your drinks. If you do succumb to ‘holiday tum’, drink plenty of water to help prevent dehydration; experts recommend between two and three litres daily, especially if you’re in a hot climate. For diarrhoea, nausea and stomach ache, Silicol gel, a liquid silicic acid supplement, three times daily can help. Children with diarrhoea must consult a healthcare professional and medical advice must always be sought if symptoms do not improve within 24 to 36 hours, or if diarrhoea is accompanied by severe pain, vomiting, fever or loss of blood. If mosquitoes and biting insects are a problem, a good insect repellent on exposed skin should help. In some parts of the world, such as Africa and South America, you’ll need more than a spray repellent, but more often than not, mosquitoes are more of a nuisance than a health hazard. Natural remedies can be e ective. Neem seed extract, for example, is a popular alternative to DEET-containing sprays. The scent of neem masks your individual scent, making you less easy to find.

Have fun in the sun, but do so safely. Always wear a good SPF, avoid sitting in the sun when it’s at its strongest and prepare your skin before you travel. If you do get caught short, aloe vera applied topically can help to soothe dry, reddened or sun-damaged skin. For all the talk of home o ces, the reality is that the average house size in the UK is 729 sq ft. That will generally translate to three or four smallish rooms – so even before the shift in working habits, a certain degree of multi-use was necessary for most. While homes are generally far roomier across the States (at a staggering average of 2,273 sq ft), this belies the realities in many of its cities (New York City stands at 983 sq ft, Washington DC at 932 sq ft). If you live in or close to a metropolis and you have a family in an average-sized home, your workspace is likely to double up as a social space. But while you may not have the option of an optimally

balanced ergonomic chair or sound-proofing, that doesn’t mean that you can’t present a professional environment that helps you get into the zone when it comes to remote working.

The key principles for any good working space from a décor perspective are a) the best light possible, b) finding a low tra c zone – areas that don’t serve as thoroughfares through the rooms, and c) creating a backdrop that conveys your taste in a way that isn’t visually jarring or distracting.

The shift to remote working has brought countless benefits and for many of us it couldn’t have come sooner. The removal of the commute, the additional flexibility to manage caring commitments… the peace and quiet to form a sentence away from watercooler reviews

of last night’s Love Island. But we cannot deny that hybrid working arrangements have ratcheted up the pressure on our homescapes.

Whether it’s having to listen to a flatmate or partner’s calls or find privacy away from the Peppa Pig theme tune, finding a place where you can concentrate e ectively is vital to the new world working order. Instead of one fixed spot, I’m personally a home workspace hopper. Sometimes I’ll write at the kitchen counter, other times, I crave sitting softer on a sofa. My ‘desks’ aren’t all photogenic or set up with the perfect 90-degree elbow angle, but I’d wager that the majority of people reading this are similar and actually enjoy that flexibility.

But the one work environment setting that I am resolutely consistent about is where I take

my video calls, simply because it matters. You may have seen the homescreen critique accounts on Twitter and Instagram or the ‘You Are Your Backdrop’ memes circulating. While this may seem a little extreme, early research has proven the importance of the image you project of your home in a career context. A recent survey of 1,500 respondents showed that candidates on a job interview conducted via video calls were judged harshly for background clutter, whereas the presence of plants and an organised bookshelf in the background persuaded those surveyed of a candidate’s reliability and professionalism.

Your background has the potential to reveal a lot about your personality without you even realising it and that can have a big impact on professional perception. While it may be tempting to use the fake digital backgrounds, available for instant download, or even blur your hinterland, I would advise explicitly against it – they look creepy and just make you wonder what the hell is hiding back there. not be made from the bed or with the dirty dishes piled up in the sink behind me. Your background has the power to humanise you, adding another layer to your story. You should think of it as a visual complement to your CV and, for that reason alone, it pays to invest time and resources into getting it right.

Starting with the basics, as mentioned above, one of the most important considerations is lighting. The very best lighting comes from the direction of your computer, so ideally you will sit for a video call facing a light source – if not a window, then the area of the room with best indirect natural light. If you only have the option of a windowless space, consider investing in a ring light. Keep in mind that if you sit between a light source and your screen, you will find yourself eerily backlit and your colleagues may not be able to see your features. The whole point of video calling is to see your expressions and get as close to real face time as possible, so always do your best to present a clear image of yourself. The intensity of light is something that décor can help with in the form of window dressings – ideal if you are looking to soften a blazing attic skylight, where home o ces are often located. Harsh

lighting can be just as tricky as low light. When creating a backdrop, consider what values you want your colleagues to take from your home space. Would you like to be perceived as hardworking? Au fait with contemporary art? Personable and approachable? Consider the objects that will fill your screen as props to convey those messages. One of the best ways to showcase those props is with shelving. Colour and pattern can bring further interest to your Zoom room, and both paint and wallpaper are great options – though less is more. For renters, removable, temporary wallpaper is a great option as it will cover all manner of sins. If you’re nervous, start small and go with an easy scalloped shelf, which you can decorate with some personal (though not provocative!) objects. I’m often asked where I get all my bits for shelves and cabinets and there isn’t an easy answer because I get them from everywhere. I never stop looking for beautiful objects, in charity shops, at markets, at airports abroad, on the high street. It’s about pieces that you are personally drawn to, not what is fashionable. I love collections of similar items, though it’s probably best to keep the theme to yourself or you might find you only receive dog mugs for every Christmas ad infinitum. Stripy ceramics are a good example of something that it is easy to purchase and look so cool together. Shapes hewn in di erent shades of marble, interesting candlesticks in pastel tones. Whatever you choose, keep your eye out wherever you go. Eclectic, personal mixtures of print, colour and texture, with pieces you’ve handpicked to create collections of objects that tell your unique story.

Reinforcing the importance of a healthy diet in school

As reported by NHS Digital in 2018, just 18% of children aged between five and 15 years ate the recommended five or more portions of fruit and vegetables per day. The results were similar for both girls and boys. Yet fruit and vegetables provide the cornerstone of a healthy diet, containing essential vitamins and minerals that support a child’s rapidly growing body and developing brain. Without adequate levels of vitamins and minerals, children are at risk of poor brain development, delayed learning, low immunity, and are at risk of increased infection. This can result in absence from school and poor outcomes longer term around health and education.

During 2023, our independent day and boarding school in Bushey, St Margaret’s, launched weekly nutrition workshops for its youngest pupils in Reception and Year 1 to capitalise on the early ‘window of opportunity’ and to help pupils to establish lifelong healthy eating habits. I am passionate about reinforcing the importance of a healthy

diet and helping children to learn in a way that is digestible and inspiring. Here, I outline the structure of the programme and the impact this has had to date.

MAKING HEALTHY FOOD FUN

Introducing young children to the benefits of healthy eating has to be delivered in a way that is interactive, memorable, fun and enriching in terms

of the overall experience. The children attending these workshops are aged four to six years, so it is important that sessions are short and engaging, but emphasise key messages around food in a way that they understand. As a school, we use qualified nutritionist, Caroline Mentzer, to deliver the carefully tailored sessions to our pupils and she has found that younger children are really interested in what they eat, but believes

that simply telling them to eat five a day, or that fruit is good for them, does little for their motivation and general interest.

Caroline, who has worked in the field of children’s health for over two decades, explains: “I’ve found that the children at St Margaret’s are really interested in learning how certain foods can benefit them and most of them can tell you that carrots help you to see in the dark.Ensuring that the sessions are regular has helped to ensure that they are slowly, but surely, making the connection between eating real food and experiencing good health.”

Over the last few months, the children have been exposed to a number of fun activities that are helping them to identify a wide range of seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs, as well as learning why they should include them in their diet. The weekly workshops use a combination of storytelling, colour coding and craft activities to

emphasise key messages around healthy food. The stories usually follow an interactive discussion with the children about a particular food, and then they participate in a craft activity related to it.

MAKING FOOD RELEVANT

The format for each workshop is 25 minutes maximum, long enough to retain attention. It is important that the workshops are relatable and enjoyable and end with a key takeaway message. For example, the sessions usually begin with a story about a tiny harvest mouse who has found herself living in a human house. This is a character that the children have come to know and love. The mouse spends her time nibbling leftovers and gains a superpower from every piece of fruit or vegetable she eats. Each week, the children discuss that superpower and finish the session with an activity that focuses on that particular food. For instance, in a past session the

children learned about the benefits of beetroot, when the harvest mouse nibbled some, she gained super strength and managed to escape the clutches of the family pet cat. The message here would be that red beetroot contains the mineral ‘iron’, which is needed for muscle strength and energy – the result being, beetroot can help make you strong. At the end of each session the children participate in a craft activity that emphasises the food they have learned about. In this case, they made red playdough out of beetroot juice and then modelled their very own beetroot. A future session also involved a night time adventure where the harvest mouse visited some allotments and nibbled some carrots to reveal amazing night vision. The children enjoyed discussing the benefits of growing your own vegetables and even designed their very own vegetable patch as part of the workshop. Linking the sessions to topical themes or seasons has worked really well too as it helps children to visualise. Last year the children enjoyed a session around bonfire night and Diwali about the healing benefits of ginger. They learned how it was traditionally used to

settle the stomach. The story that week looked at how pets and wild animals might feel frightened by the persistent loud bangs emitted from fireworks and how our bodies can physically show signs of worry or stress – for instance, butterflies in our tummies. The children talked with our nutritionist about how spicy ginger can feel like a taste explosion on the tongue and at the end of the session they created some beautiful firework collages to visualise this.

SPARKING INTEREST

The impact of regular nutrition workshops for our youngest pupils has been very encouraging to date. The children are really enjoying the sessions with Caroline, they can easily recount what they’ve learned, and they get lots of hands-on experience with healthy foods too. There is also the communication aspect of the sessions, encouraging pupil voice and feedback as well as creativity from a young age. It is wonderful hearing the pride in their voices when they share their knowledge with others around them. While children are young, it’s so important for schools to exploit this

crucial window of opportunity to reinforce the importance of a healthy diet and help them to learn about food and cooking in a way that sparks their interest. The more they understand about the food they eat, the stronger the foundation for their educational outcomes and their future lives.

Children often fear the unknown and will reject a food simply because it looks unfamiliar. Getting up close and personal with all kinds of fruit, vegetables and herbs means they get used to seeing and exploring a variety of foods, which will help them to make healthy and more varied choices as they grow up. Young children are naturally inquisitive, so the underlying aim of introducing these workshops was to provide a strong foundation for future learning around what constitutes a healthy and balanced diet.

World’s a stage

Independent day and boarding school, St Margaret’s, delivered an incredible Expressive Arts Showcase in June for local parents at the Radlett Centre. The pupils delighted the audience with several dramatic performances across music, drama and dance. Exhibiting the very best of the Expressive Arts Faculty at the school, visitors to the Radlett Centre were also treated to a stunning pupil art exhibition in the foyer. The art department at St Margaret’s School has gone from strength to strength over recent years with many of its photography pupils gaining some of the highest grades in the last academic year. With considerable investment in its arts facilities and the addition of dance this academic year, pupils have been given multiple opportunities to join troupes and participate in high level competitions.

Colourful learning

A kaleidoscope of colour swept through St Edmund’s College & Prep School, Ware, in June, as students participated in a charity Colour Run in support of Cancer Research UK. The vibrant event is a highlight in the school’s ongoing charity fundraising efforts, which have already generated more than £13k for the charity during this academic year. As students tackled an obstacle course in the historic school grounds, they were showered from head to toe with clouds of coloured powders. The enthusiasm and sportsmanship on display throughout the event created a memorable spectacle, with student’s white t-shirts covered in a rainbow of colours by the finishing line.

The Colour Run is part of St Edmund’s Charity Week, which

features a variety of fundraising activities for students and staff to enjoy. Highlights include competitive football and hockey matches, sponsored car washes, a talent show, the popular ‘soak the

Adventure begins

A local independent prep school on the outskirts of Croxley Green, York House, has announced its intent to move towards an 11+ co-educational model from September 2026. The school will phase out its current Year 7 and Year 8 cohorts over the coming two years as it outlines a brand new strategy in keeping with national and local trends moving away from the traditional 13+ transfer to senior school. Jon Gray, Head at York House, says: “There are many exciting opportunities for the school in becoming fully 11+. It is very important to us that our pupils across the year groups experience the best ‘York House Way’ and the adventure-led education that we aim to provide.
