ABSOLUTELY’S July issue highlights
Back in the early days of my journalistic career, I landed quite the gig: to go and review the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It was a crazy, crazy few days and I have to admit some of it is a little hazy, although I saw some top comedians and also some acts that I can't really go into inside a family magazine.
A part of me misses those days, but a much larger part of me points out that I never liked to stray too far from home these days. Thanks, then, to the people behind the St Albans Comedy Garden, who bring comedy's biggest stars right to us. We meet the siblings who decided this was the place to set up shop.

The theme continues later in the magazine when the experts at Visit Herts pick out ten of the best staycation spots in Hertfordshire. For a homebody like me, the whole thing is music to my ears (unlike some of the dreadul stuff I heard up in Edinburgh that one time).

TCASSRANDOLPH AND WILL BRIGGS
Having a LAUGH
As the St Albans Comedy Garden returns, Absolutely chats to the two siblings behind it and discover why there’s plenty to smile aboutBy MARK KEBBLE
he summer festival season in Hertfordshire throws up plenty of gems, but there’s one that literally leaves Absolutely’s belly hurting –in a good way. St Albans Comedy Garden returns to Verulamium Park from 24-28 July, with the biggest names in comedy coming to the city. Prepare to laugh. A lot.
This summer catch the iconic Harry Hill, everyone’s favourite randomist Ross Noble, national treasure (or in her words ‘national disgrace’) Jo Brand, Netflix star Simon Amstell, the inimitable Dara O Briain, Scotland’s queen of comedy Fern Brady, and The Last Leg’s Josh Widdicombe, plus many more performing at this astounding series of shows.
The Comedy Garden is produced by Will Briggs and Cass Randolph of 57 Festivals,
so Absolutely decided that three is definitely not a crowd and sat down with them to find out why laughter is the best medicine.
Q What’s your earliest memory of seeing a live comedy show?
CR: Honestly I was probably too young! Will and I are siblings, and in our early teens our mum married a guy called Malcolm Hardee who was a legendary comedian and club owner in SE London. He ran Up The Creek, a notorious comedy club in Greenwich, and we spent a lot of time there growing up. Malcolm had a routine called The Greatest Show On Legs, which featured him and two other acts naked apart from socks dancing with balloons to the Cha Cha Cha song. Enough said really.
Q When you started to get into comedy, who were the acts that you loved to see live?
WB: At Up The Creek we saw so many greats in their prime, like Jo Brand, Eddie Izzard, Bill Bailey, Micky Flanagan, Ross Noble and Sean Lock, plus the rise of acts like Russell Howard,
Greg Davies and Jon Richardson. The best thing to have witnessed since those days is how diverse line-ups are now, the mic is no longer reserved for a handful of white guys. We’ve done our best to contribute to that change as well, and are proud that our programmes are usually 50/50 female to male acts.
Q What is it about live comedy that you just love?
WB: Nothing beats the energy of live shows. But I also love curating the line-ups, picking acts I love and who I know will combine well with others to give audiences a really great evening. It’s a great industry, and even though comedy is so huge at the moment with many of our acts starring on TV panel shows, Netflix, hosting amazing podcasts or firing out content across their social media channels, the behindthe-scenes industry is still relatively close-knit.
Q When did you decide to work together?
CR: We’ve always gone to festivals, our mum would take us to Glastonbury when we were
super young and then later we’d always make a pilgrimage to the Edinburgh Fringe each year. It was there in 2008 that we realised how crazy it was that London didn’t have anything near that scale, when it’s arguably the home of live comedy. So we set about doing something about that, and launched our inaugural Greenwich Comedy Festival at the Old Royal Naval College in September 2009, and haven’t looked back since.
Q How do you look back on your early events?
CR: Everything started in Greenwich 16 years ago, and since then we’ve launched comedy festivals in Bristol, Brighton, Manchester, a new one in Cambridge this year, plus St Albans of course.
Traditionally the shows have taken place inside a Big Top tent with the bars and food stalls outdoors. In 2020 the events industry, along with everything else, was hit hard by the lockdowns and we cancelled all our festivals except for Greenwich that took place later in the year. We realised that we could continue on with it if we took the shows outdoors and put in socially-distanced
seating. It was a totally epic experience, the shows sold out almost immediately, people were overjoyed to have something to come and see. That year’s event felt more like a public service than a comedy festival.
Q What have been the highlights?
CR: The 2020 festival was a high for sure, seeing the acts and audience relish in the live experience once more.
A particularly nail-biting moment was at our Bristol festival back in 2015, we had Adam Buxton headlining one night and found out just before that he’d double booked himself, so we had to arrange a motorbike transfer to whisk him from his show at London’s BFI as fast as humanly and legally possible down to Queen Square in Bristol. We managed it, just!
A really special show, even though I didn’t realise it at the time, was watching Sean Lock tear up the room in Greenwich in 2019, he was absolutely on fire. It was the last gig of his I saw before he passed away in 2021.
Q Why did you see St Albans as the perfect location for a festival?
WB: We spend a lot of time researching any new place, looking for the right blend of audience and location, with an eye on any competition too of course. St Albans was a winning choice for us, our shows have been received so well, it feels like we’ve been here forever rather than a matter of years.
Q What about Verulamium Park?
CR: It’s a sprawling beauty of a park, but so close to the city centre, so it’s really the dream location for us. Everybody knows it too, and it’s a joy to see audiences streaming through the park towards the festival entrance each year.
Q Apart from the obvious – laughs – what did you want St Albans Comedy Garden to o er?
WB: Alongside the unbeatable comedy we promise all the fun of a boutique-style
festival, so great bars serving up all kinds of craft beers and delicious wines with lots of low/no alcohol options too. Plus we have an incredible selection of street-food traders, many from the local area, who serve up delicious dishes that keep bellies full.
Q What are you excited about with regards to this year’s events?
CR: The big change for this year is the Big Top tent. We launched the Comedy Garden in 2021, still very much in the eye of the pandemic storm, and so the shows were outdoors. But those days are gone so we’re bringing in our beautiful Big Top tent and taking the shows undercover. The atmosphere inside is fantastic, we achieve that really intimate comedy club feel, but with all the festival fun happening outside.
Q What is it like to work with comedians?
WB: The jokes aren’t exclusive to the stage that’s for sure, especially when we have a bunch of acts who’ve gigged together around the country. There’s a strong comradery between them all, which lends itself well to impressive levels of o -stage fun and hi-jinks. Before a show there can be some nerves, but after a storming gig the energy is electric.

Last year McLaren celebrated its 60th birthday and, as Absolutely discovers, it all stemmed from one young boy’s racing dream
McLaren, that stalwart of Formula 1 racing and the only manufacturer to have entered and won all three legs of motorsport’s illustrious ‘Triple Crown’, has just celebrated its 60th birthday. With six decades at the very sharpest end of the motorsport food chain under its belt, and a trophy cabinet to show for it, the name has etched itself into not only folklore as one of the UK’s most well-known companies, but a global brand with legions of passionate fans.
It began with a determined young boy. Born in 1937 in Auckland, New Zealand, Bruce McLaren was diagnosed with Perthes disease at a young age, leaving him with one leg shorter than the other, and was told he may never walk again. But, having spent every waking minute of his formative years at his father’s service station and workshop, Bruce was a little kid with a big dream – to one day race cars, just like his father, Les, had done once upon a time. After spending an incredible two years on his back in traction and with his legs in plaster casts, at the age of 15 Bruce and Les McLaren began rebuilding an old Austin 7 which had made its way into the workshop. They had originally planned
to sell the car on, but Bruce convinced his father to instead enter it into the 1952 hillclimb at Muriwai. Due to his father falling ill, young Bruce entered the race himself and, in a surprise to all, won. And with this, an incredible racing career began.
But driving alone wasn’t enough. Bruce had the mind of an engineer and in 1963 formed his own racing team, Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd., with the ambition of building and racing his own cars.
Today, when entering McLaren’s headquarters in Woking, Surrey, you are still greeted by that little red Austin 7, stood on the building’s impressive boulevard of engineering history, right next to a bronze statue of its owner, Bruce McLaren. A little further down, past awe-inspiring cars such as the McLaren F1, the P1 or the new Artura Spider, you will also find an expansive trophy cabinet, housing all of the marque’s souvenirs of success. And there, at the very front, almost overshadowed by its much bigger counterparts, stands a small
DRIVE
golden star on a black base – the first ever McLaren trophy, won by Bruce McLaren at that momentous hillclimb race in Muriwai.
The building housing all of this heritage, the McLaren Technology Centre, has been home to the McLaren brand since 2004, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its o cial opening by Queen Elizabeth II just a couple of months ago. Stood on land that originally housed an ostrich farm, the building was designed by globally renowned British architect Lord Norman Foster, who was originally tasked with
“I FEEL THAT LIFE IS MEASURED IN ACHIEVEMENT”
creating a building that felt like 90% NASA and 10% Disney. Since then, the futuristic looking building has become a topic of mystery and marvel among car enthusiasts. So it comes as no surprise that it has in fact served as a set for multiple award-winning film and TV productions.
The space age facility feels timeless, not two decades old. The suspended timeline the building’s aura creates makes perfect sense though. For a racing team that has six decades of experience on track, McLaren has a road car business that is actually younger than Tesla. It first built a road-car in 1992 with the legendary F1, delivered by a small team of Formula 1 engineers and designers.
But McLaren Automotive – McLaren’s dedicated supercar marque, as we know it today – has only been going since 2010. In that short space time, it has taken those 60 years of on-track experience and innovation to create a supercar business that is already well established, forward-looking and incredibly creative, with a world-leading edge when it comes to lightweight design.
From a bird’s eye perspective, the dramatic building and its lake form a perfect circle, echoing a ying/yang symbol. It’s stunning architecture, but also serves a purpose. The lake contains over 30 million litres of water which is continuously pumped through heat exchangers, helping to cool the buildings and dissipate the heat produced by the Formula 1 wind tunnel. And the greenery surrounding the building captures up to 100 tonnes of carbon every year.
While Bruce McLaren’s life sadly ended much too early in 1970, one cannot help but wonder what he would make of the legacy he left behind. His name, passion and dedication could have died with him – instead they have lived on in racing and road cars alike and can be felt and seen in everything that comes out of Woking to this day. It can all be summed up by one of Bruce’s most wellknown quotes: “I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone.”

Wine recommendations for the month
By THE WINE SOCIETYThe Society's Greek White 2023
£8.95
2023 was a fabulous year for roditis, providing opulent stone-fruit while moschofilero provides rose-hip backing vocals. The result is a more fruit-forward wine filled with peach and grapefruit notes on the refreshing palate.
Rosé d'Anjou GrolleauGamay, Famille Bougrier 2023
£8.25
This is a delicate, odry Loire rosé that is pale in colour and light as a feather and works with or without food, including the light heat and spice of Asian cuisine.
Zephyr 6 Marlborough Pinot Noir 2022
£14.50
Marlborough pinot noir is crisper, lighter and more red-fruit driven than pinot from many other regions of New Zealand, and this is a very good example. Bright red-cherry and raspberry on the nose, backed up by a delicate hint of soy and even a touch of fresh ginger.
Since it was founded back in 1874, The Wine Society has dared to do business a little differently. Bringing together a community united by a shared love of wine, The Society is a co-operative and owned by its members. This means there is no requirement to pump profit into annual dividends or bonuses for shareholders – all profits go back into the business.
The Wine Society welcomes all wine lovers. Become a member today and receive £20 off toward your first order. thewinesociety.com

eauty admin (as I like to call it) seems to take up more of my time than ever. So I appreciate speedy appointments, like threading, that can be slotted in between dashing to my next meeting. If you have sensitive skin (like me) though, you might be put o by the possibility that you might turn up looking like a tomato. This is why the new collaboration between Shavata Singh and Lightinderm is so genius. I visited Shavata at her Harvey Nichols’ beauty bar in Knightsbridge. One of London’s leading lash and brow experts, Shavata first threaded and reshaped my brows, doing a beautiful job of framing my face. Whilst she worked, she explained why she was so excited about teaming up with Géraldine Decaux, the brains behind the French tech brand. The handheld Lightinderm LED device uses light and photo-active ingredients in combination to repair the skin. After my threading treatment, Shavata used Lightinderm’s ‘REPAIR Programme’ on the skin beneath my brows. And just like magic, any redness had completely disappeared. This is a gamechanger if you want to book in for threading before you head out to an event, drinks with the girls, or even a date. I had a press dinner straight afterwards and no one suspected I’d come straight from a threading appointment, but I did get several compliments on my brow shape. It’s safe to say I’m hooked.

play an important role in rehydrating and strengthening the hair fibres.
The conditioner protects the outer layer of the hair called “cuticle” – this resembles scales of a fish, laying in a downward movement. This not only protects the inner structure, which is where colour molecules and structural changes take place, but also helps to reflect daylight, creating a healthy shiny glow.
Hair today…
Think about tomorrow. Trisha Buller writes about how to protect your hair this summer
With summer vacations fast approaching, we must take heed of how sun, sea, UV rays, and environmental toxins could a ect our hair condition. Over time this can cause hair to become dull, limp and lifeless, leaving us struggling to maintain style and achieve great colour results at the salon. This can be avoided with the right advice on home hair care by the professional and taking extra steps to maintain the colour and condition by simply using the correct regime whilst away on our summer vacations.
Hair is hygroscopic, so will absorb atmospheric moisture, such as sea, chlorine from swimming pools, fumes
from tra c and many more. To avoid your hair from absorbing such elements, using the right products on your hair can stop this from happening, thus protecting the inner fibres and avoiding breakage.
Shampooing your hair daily can assist in the removal of waste, toxins and product build up and is important in maintaining a healthy hair growth, assists in oxygenating the blood supply to the hair follicles within, avoiding pores and follicles to become blocked.
Some people believe daily shampooing will cause excessive dryness of the hair shaft, but providing you are using the correct product for your scalp and hair type this will not happen – in fact it’s the reverse, helping to rehydrate and strengthen the hair shaft. Products contain much better quality ingredients now than in previous times therefore
If cuticle scales are damaged for whatever reason, and there are many, then this causes gaps in the structure and daylight is absorbed as opposed to reflected, causing a dull matt appearance. This also can be the reason for colour fade and a lack of hold once styled.
The conditioner should be applied from root to ends in a gentle downward stroking movement only using a large tooth comb, not a hair brush. A comb will not continue through the hair if there is a knot, you have to gently tease the knot out, whereas a brush will pull the knot causing it to snap or break.
An intensive hair treatment should be applied at least once a week. The treatment has smaller molecules and acts quite di erently from a conditioner, penetrating the cuticle it enters the inner structure helping to replace lost moisture, protein, carbohydrates and essential fatty acids. An intensive treatment can be left on the hair from as little as 5 minutes to 30 minutes, depending on your hair type, texture, and density.
Always rinse thoroughly and apply the conditioner which protects the cuticle and a heat styling protector spray or cream, again depending on your hair type and texture as to what you should be using.

ZENTAL EXPERIENCE CALMAT
Located in London and Milton Keynes, Zental o ers an unparalleled dental and facial aesthetic experience, rated 5* by thousands of patients
At Zental, they believe the best results are found in the details. Their practices blend cutting-edge technology with a philosophy of tranquillity and wellbeing. Their thoughtfully designed practices have been curated to soothe all your senses.
From Invisalign and composite bonding to advanced teeth whitening, they invite you to Trust in Calm with Zental.
Zental was born from the shared vision of two lifelong school friends, Ihsaan and Arif. Ihsaan, a multi-qualified medical doctor, dentist, and surgeon, became increasingly disillusioned with the dental industry. He witnessed first-hand how often patients were anxious and how the clinical atmosphere added to this discomfort. Arif, himself a successful entrepreneur, felt empathetic towards patients that needed care but had nowhere to go. He too was one of the many people who didn’t enjoy going to the dentist. They both saw a desperate need to transform dental visits into calming and positive experiences. Their goal was to create a sanctuary of holistic well-being coupled with exceptional clinical care.
This vision culminated in their first branch opening in Barnet in 2019, where they built on their reputable services and award-winning dentists to help more patients and serve the local communities. They then opened Cricklewood and Milton Keynes in 2021, Bexleyheath in 2022, Knightsbridge in 2023, and Earls Court last month, whilst maintaining the high level of patient care, innovation, and zen-like atmosphere we built our reputation on.
COMPOSITE BONDING
Composite bonding is very popular as it is a versatile, cost-e ective solution for repairing chipped, worn, or broken teeth.
• Before: The patient was unhappy with her smile; the colour, shape, and uneven edges of her top teeth.
• After: Composite bonding transformed the patient’s smile simply and remarkably. This quick, drill-free solution gives a whiter, more naturally shaped smile. Their review exclaimed, “My teeth are doing WONDERS!”
Dr Mira Morcos is their Composite specialist.
INVISALIGN
“If you are self-conscious about overlapping teeth then Invisalign is for you. This evolutionary system straightens teeth
without metal braces,” says Dr Hemel Mandalia is the Invisalign specialist.
As Diamond Invisalign providers, they handle hundreds of cases each year, showcasing their expertise in this treatment. Every patient receives a ClinCheck – a 3D impression of their smile – after a quick consultation scan.
FACIAL AESTHETICS
As we age, we lose the youthful volume in our faces and the quality of our skin declines. To address volume loss that can prematurely age us, premium products such as dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, and skin boosters help reverse signs of aging.
“Our approach is always naturallooking results that enhance our patients' youthful appearance and boost their confidence,” explains Dr Maria Olawale, their specialist in facial aesthetics.
HYGIENE SERVICES
A healthy mouth is not just about aesthetics; it’s an investment in your well-being that can pay dividends for your entire body.
“Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and a ect other parts of the body, highlighting the interconnectedness of oral health and general health. So, remember
to schedule regular visits. Prevention is better than cure!” emphasises Dr Alla Bacalu, their Dental Hygienist specialist.
TEETH WHITENING
Premier teeth whitening treatments are a safe and e ective way to remove stains and discolouration. Remember that teeth whitening treatment should only be prescribed by a dentist. Choose from their in-chair or at-home whitening systems, featuring only the top brands like Boutique, Enlighten, and Philips Zoom. “Remember that teeth whitening treatment should only be prescribed by a dentist,” says Dr Mohamed Kassam, their Teeth Whitening specialist.

DECADE of DESIGN
We talk to the eponymous founder of Claire Garner Interiors about a special anniversary, stand out projects and a love for Aldbury
Q What was your first professional job in the industry and what important things did you learn from the early years?
A My first professional role in the industry was at Designers Guild, where I initially worked in their Product Development department. While this experience provided valuable insights, I discovered that my true passion lay in working directly with clients to transform their living spaces. Recognising this, I transitioned to a position as a design assistant for an interior designer, where I had the opportunity to immerse myself in various
projects and gain first-hand experience in client-focused design. Through this role, I learned the importance of e ective communication, attention to detail, and the art of translating a client’s vision into a personalised, harmonious design.
Q Did you face any challenges when you first launched your own studio?
A There were numerous challenges I encountered when launching my own studio. One significant hurdle was establishing trade accounts without the
backing of any trade references, which initially seemed daunting. However, I was fortunate to have built valuable relationships with representatives over the years, and their support proved instrumental in navigating this process. Every aspect of starting a design studio presented a learning curve and boy did I learn fast! Embracing a mindset of continuous learning and seizing every opportunity that came my way became essential. It was about diving headfirst into every task and having the confidence that I would find solutions along the way.
Q What was your first project and how do you look back on it?
A My first project was a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with a local hotel on a consultancy basis. They tasked me with transforming an old chapel into a captivating wedding venue. Simultaneously, I embarked on two other exciting projects: renovating a historic property and designing bespoke interiors for a family who had moved out of London into an expansive newbuild space. I feel incredibly fortunate to have encountered such varied and enriching experiences in my initial year in business.
Q Since then, can you pick out projects that really stand out for you and why?
A One stand out project was the renovation and redesign of a holiday home on the Isle of Wight for a local client. Managing the entire project, we even carried out the week-long installation with my newborn son just four weeks old (as the building schedule ran over!). From furnishing to cutlery in the drawers, we ensured every detail was meticulously addressed. Handing over the keys to our clients was an immensely proud moment.
Another memorable project involved collaborating with a returning client on the extension and reconfiguration of their home’s downstairs space. Teaming up with exceptional suppliers, we designed and crafted a stunning outcome. Some of our most loved imagery is from this Park Avenue project, in particular, the garden room, featuring a breathtaking pitched ceiling and panoramic garden views.
Presently, we are working on a project in York, overseeing a full house renovation for our clients. From conceptualisation to execution, we have meticulously designed every aspect of the space. What sets this project apart is the unwavering trust our clients have placed in us. Surprisingly, they’ve not made any amendments, a
“Our studio embodies our ethos as a design studio: warm, inviting and filled with inspiration”
rarity for such an extensive project. As the designs gradually materialise on-site, we can’t wait to get to install and hand over the home to our lovely clients.
Q Today, what services do you o er?
A We pride ourselves on o ering a diverse range of services tailored to meet the unique needs of each client. From comprehensive turnkey design services for entire house renovations and new builds, to flexible consultancy services available by the hour, we accommodate various project scopes and budgets.
Our expertise spans across joinery design, lighting concepts, and meticulous space planning, ensuring every aspect of your project is thoughtfully considered and executed to perfection. For clients who are not local to our studio, we o er convenient virtual and hybrid design packages, enabling seamless collaboration regardless of location. Whether you are based nationally or internationally, we warmly welcome discussions for projects of all sizes and complexities.
Our goal is to provide unparalleled service and expertise, guiding you through every step of the design process to create a space that is both functional and reflective of your unique style and preferences.
Q What do you love about Aldbury?
A We feel incredibly fortunate to be based in Aldbury, nestled amidst such natural beauty. Surrounded by sprawling fields and breathtaking views overlooking Ashridge monument, our studio is housed in a recently renovated old stable block, reflecting the charm and character of the area. It’s a space that truly embodies our ethos as a design studio – warm, inviting, and filled with inspiration. Both our clients and suppliers thoroughly enjoy visiting us here.
Q What’s next for you?
A We’re gearing up for a busy year ahead, filled with a variety of projects which we are extremely grateful for. One particularly exciting prospect is the impending launch of new products meticulously designed by myself and the team. These pieces, made to order by our trusted artisans, reflect our dedication to quality and craftsmanship nurtured through longstanding relationships. The business also celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, so we are planning some celebratory events for the summer. We are excited to see what else this year has in store for us!

A real DRAW
Inspiring connection and resilience through the beauty of art
By ELAINE FRASERArt is a rich form of visual communication that allows even very small children to express themselves in a completely unique, highly personal language while also giving them the tools to interpret meaning in the artwork of others. As in all things, the earlier this skill is acquired and the greater and broader the exposure to art is, the more beneficial it is to the individual in becoming a proficient artistic ‘linguist’. Art teaches children many life skills too; from empathy, self-expression and introspection, to the celebration of di erences, communication, inclusivity, critical analysis, self-confidence, openmindedness and eloquence in formulating and communicating opinions. During art lessons, pupils also experience the freedom of not being right or wrong in an educational setting and being able to articulate an intelligent and considered response.
REMOVING THE FEAR OF RIGHT AND WRONG
Art helps pupils to connect with the world around them and my mantra in class is that to be a true artist, you need to see and not merely look. This infers a requirement for a deeper understanding of the subject, visually of course, but also intellectually. It is this level of personal connection that an artist is looking to convey or to elicit in the viewer; a connection with, and interpretation of, the world which goes beyond the superficial. Because art is subjective, there is the freedom for pupils to make considered judgements in a very personal way without fear of being wrong. These reactions and reflections then form the basis of the practical side of the subject; creating unique and insightful artworks. Art may be a creative subject, but it is equally a highly philosophical and academic subject too; even though by default, it is often viewed solely as a practical application or skill set. If we take the definition of an academic subject as being a scholarly pursuit – analysis, investigation, critical rigour, innovation and communication being key components – then the study of art encapsulates all of these. The inclusion of the history of art, which is imbued throughout the art curriculum alongside the subjects’ practical application, requires pupils to consider societal, historical, cultural and political issues with conceptual depth. It is no coincidence that the art department is a relevant and easily facilitated inclusion on nearly all cross-curricular trips. Possibly the most important and personally gratifying aspect of teaching art to children is helping to develop and guide their recognition, acceptance and celebration of being an individual. Encouraging self-awareness and selfconfidence in expression, as well as empathy and understanding of others’ right to approach and see things di erently, encourages resilience against the pressures of conformity in these times of social media, but also in creating empathetic and open-minded future adults.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVITY
The art curriculum has developed and broadened exponentially since I began teaching and has, happily, moved away from the slightly formulaic acquisition of practical skills to embrace a wider spectrum of both artists, art genres and materials. The inclusion of art history into all aspects of the practical curriculum is integral to both the understanding of the subject and fully realising the subject’s potential in education. Art can also benefit children who might not feel as naturally gifted as some. Picasso’s view that ‘every child is an artist’ certainly rings true. Young children, almost without exception, enjoy being creative without fear of judgement and continuing to embrace that individuality and creativity, whether in practical or intellectual terms, is of utmost importance in leading a fulfilling existence.
CULTURAL IMMERSION AND PRACTICAL EXPLORATION
Art at York House aims to create an exciting culture of artistic experience and expression. We run an annual ‘Reflection’ project across a number of year groups, which requires pupils to reflect on a given question and then add their illustrated response to a collaborative artwork in the grounds. Year 6 study expressionism and create highly sensitive and insightful creative responses which portray a range of feelings. Years 7 and 8 study the legacy of Jean-Michel Basquiat and the rise of the street art genre, culminating in an artist-led tour of East London’s vibrant and diverse street art scene. Our older pupils are challenged to consider the varying philosophies of art and begin to piece together their learning regarding the evolution of art across the centuries. Year 8 hold heated, informed and impressive debates arguing the merits of conceptual art versus realism. In essence, we look to expand the pupils’ personal response to the central and perennial question: what is art?

Dance REVOLUTIONARIES
A unique film about two acclaimed choreographers o ers a new vision of Hamlet filmed at Hatfield House why everyone is talking about…
Astunning film called Dance Revolutionaries, which was released in June, truly caught the eye of Absolutely.
The two-part film delves into the emotive world of two dance visionaries, choreographers Robert Cohan and Kenneth MacMillan, and is produced by Yorke Dance Project, in partnership with the Royal Ballet. Presented in two parts: the first, Portraits, is a series of five short solo dances choreographed by Robert Cohan; the second is Kenneth MacMillan’s Hamlet-inspired ballet, called Sea of Troubles. The reason for our interest, apart from the fact it’s an engrossing double act? Sea of Troubles was filmed entirely at Hatfield House.
“What connects us as human beings is our shared experience, the compassion and empathy we feel in understanding each other’s physical and emotional reality. Robert Cohan and Kenneth MacMillan were both compelled by this shared, human experience to make their dances real for audiences. They sought to express what we all know – what it is to be Human,” says producer, Yolande Yorke-Edgell.
Though working in di erent styles, Cohan in contemporary dance and MacMillan in ballet, they each changed how we experienced dance at a pivotal moment in dance history.
Moving away from the stylised, fairytale storytelling of much traditional ballet, MacMillan brought a deep, psychological reality to the stories he choreographed. In doing so, he drew deeper emotional truth from the dancers’ performances, which at times was received with some resistance as audiences were not used to experiencing this sort of work.
At the same time, Cohan had formed London Contemporary Dance Theatre in 1967. He brought all that he had learned from working with Martha Graham to the company and encouraged his dancers to find the essential, inner vibration which made movement necessary. His dances were driven by the search for a truth which audiences would recognise in themselves in unspoken ways.
In Sea of Troubles, MacMillan opens the door to a completely new take on the emotional motivations of Hamlet himself – and it’s all driven by sex and lust. In the classic version of the play, Hamlet is pushed by the ghost of his dead father to avenge his murder at the hands of his brother, Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius. And Claudius is now married to Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude. That relationship is always presented as chaste
and formal. MacMillan blows that apart. This is Hamlet by way of James M Cain and the Postman Always Rings Twice. In virtually every scene, Hamlet, Claudius and Gertrude can’t contain their lustful feelings. They’re all over each other, quite literally. And it’s this vision which torments Hamlet almost as much as the murder of his father. He can’t bear to see his mother consumed with sexual desire. And you see and feel every single sensation that Hamlet experiences because we are slap bang in the middle of it. You can almost taste his revulsion. Dance Revolutionaries is a revolution in how to make a dance movie. It’s dance for the many, not the few.
