DAVID LLOYD
Welcome
4
David Lloyd, the Police and Crime
Commissioner for Hertfordshire, on the work being done to make sure this will be a happy and safe new year
THE E D I TO R’ S January issue highlights

s we enter a new year and 2022 is upon us, now is customarily the time to look forward and strive to make improvements in our lives and for those around us. Having been elected your Police and Crime Commissioner for the past decade, I am proud that Hertfordshire remains one of the safest areas in the country in which to live and work – but I am really excited about the plans and opportunities we have to reduce crime even further. Hertfordshire Constabulary now has more front-line officers than at any time in its history. As your elected representative I want to ensure that these officers are deployed and carry out work which the public tell me is important to them. Following my re-election, I am currently drawing up a new evidencebased Community Safety and Criminal Justice Plan, which will drive the vision for a more inclusive, effective and efficient police force. To be published in the spring, it will reflect and set out how we deal with the priorities and concerns of all victims, communities and businesses across the county. Nationally, police legitimacy is currently the greatest challenge we face in policing. I am working alongside the Chief Constable to redouble efforts to improve the safety of women and girls by focusing on crimes that affect them, and areas and situations where they feel unsafe. All of the work outlined above obviously requires sufficient funding. Now is also the time of year that I have to set the annual police budget and I consult with the public over the level of the Police Precept in their Council Tax bill. Visit hertscommissioner.org to have your say.

B A L A N C E Absolutely Hertfordshire sits down with entrepreneur Luisa Zissman to talk chasing business dreams, life in the county and her upcoming tour By BETHAN ANDREWS
F
rom leaving school at 17 and setting up her own business at the age of 20, to flying the flag for women in business, getting to the final of The Apprentice, and paving the way for a career in the media, Luisa Zissman is no stranger to grit and determination. Chasing her dreams and pushing for success is second nature to the Hertfordshire-based entrepreneur. In 2011, Zissman opened a cake shop in St Albans and an online cake business, and it was from here that she decided to apply for a hit TV show. “I applied for The Apprentice because I had the business and my husband at the time was involved. We were going through an amicable break-up, but I wanted to do something on my own,” she explains. “I thought, I’m just going to give it a whirl. I didn’t necessarily want to be business partners with Alan Sugar, but I wanted to branch out on my own. It taught me that
I was better than I thought I was. I never thought I’d get into the final, so it was a big confidence boost and it taught me that a lot is possible – if you really want something, then you most definitely can do it.” Speaking of chasing dreams and going for what you really want, Zissman is passionate about showing that, as a mother, you can still be successful as a woman in business and as an entrepreneur. “For mums to see that you can be a mum and still run businesses is really special,” she says. “As a mum myself, it was a nice thing to show.” Does she have a career highlight? “At the heart of the business, we were turning over £3 million which was great,” she says. “A high point now is being in a financial situation that means I can invest in other people’s businesses. From a media perspective, having a really successful podcast and doing that with one of my best friends is amazing.” Fast forward to today, Zissman is
referring to the incredibly popular podcast she co-hosts with Anna Williamson that will be going on tour in 2022, and to the new business she has invested in called Silly Sentiments. “I noticed the company online and messaged them to get to know the owner Vicky Gratton. She came to me for advice when she was approached by an investor, but I said that I would be willing to work with her and that’s how it all came about,” explains Zissman. “It’s made up of very current, funny greetings cards all designed in-house with the aim of making people smile – it’s a fun and creative business to be involved in.” Zissman gives off a real excitement talking about her new venture, and it’s clear that the continuous education she gets from the business world is a big part of her drive. “As a mum, you can kind of get trapped in the mummy world,” she says. “It’s really nice to be able to have stimulation that isn’t your kids. SHE WILL SOON BE MOVING TO BISHOP'S STORTFORD
“We cover topics that people would not dare talk about” I find the media world a bit empty and shallow too, so it’s nice to have a business that makes me think and use my brain.” Speaking of the media world, an element that Zissman does love is the world surrounding herself and Anna Williamson’s successful podcast, LuAnna, as covered in the last issue of Absolutely Hertfordshire when we spoke to the latter. With millions of listeners built up since 2018, the honest format of the podcast has built up something of a cult following. As one of the first friendship duos to bring out a podcast in this format, it’s another thing that Zissman has almost pioneered. So, what makes it so popular? “We talk about everything and anything from the very ordinary to the taboo, and it’s all revolved around listener input,” she says. “It’s inadvertently in the top 20 comedy podcasts – I’m not sure how, because neither of us are comedians, but I think people love it because it’s like having a conversation with your mate down the pub. We cover topics that people think about, but wouldn’t dare talk about. I think that’s why it’s popular, because it’s no holds barred.” The duo are taking it on tour in 2022, and HATFIELD HOUSE IS A LOCAL FAVOURITE
can’t wait to meet their listeners and feel the joy of being surrounded by like-minded people after a bumpy, and often lonely, few years. “We are going everywhere from Glasgow to Ireland and it’ll be really fun,” says Zissman. “It’s going to be us live, having a laugh with all of our loyal listeners. I can’t wait to be in a room with people who love the podcast as much as we love doing it.” With such a busy working life, I wonder what Zissman does to switch off and escape the media world. As we chat, it quickly becomes evident that her home in Hertfordshire is at the heart of the quieter side of her life. Having lived in the county for a long time, she radiates love for it and credits it as somewhere that she can escape to after a busy week of work. “I’ve lived in St Albans, I’m currently living in a village just outside of Potters Bar, and I’m moving soon to Bishop’s Stortford so I’ve covered the whole of Hertfordshire,” she laughs. “I really loved St Albans, it’s such a beautiful place with a real buzz, but I love the villages and IT ALL STARTED WITH CUPCAKES

community feel too. I’ve got seven horses and I love riding around all the rural areas, but I like that you can still go to places like Bishop’s Stortford for a great night out.” Zissman goes on to tell me how much she likes to go to the country house events at places such as Hatfield House and Knebworth, and that as a mum, she really values the fact that the county has such brilliant schools. So, what does 2022 have in store for her? She tells me that, alongside the excitement of the podcast tour, she may have another investment to follow after enjoying the process with Silly Sentiments, and that she is looking forward to moving house and enjoying life divided between the limelight and fields full of horses in leafy Hertfordshire. Despite the fact that Zissman’s world sounds hectic, incredibly ambitious and full-on, it sounds like a pretty lovely set of plans for the new year. In fact, between her life in the busy media and business world and her life in the quiets of Hertfordshire, some may even say she has the perfect balance. luisazissman.co.uk

PAVEL GONEVSKI
Q What’s the story behind OVO and how long have you been artistic director? A I set up OVO with Simon Nicholas in 2003 with me as artistic director and Simon as producer. We named the company OVO because for us it was about creativity and about doing something different – we were keen to develop shows that were bold, imaginative and surprising, and created locally. Since we set up the company we’ve always harnessed talent in and around St Albans, which has led us to work with some brilliant local actors, musicians, costume designers, lighting and sound engineers and many more.

Q How tough was it to go through the various lockdowns – and what were you able to still do? A It was challenging, but I think that it really forced us to be creative. In a way it played to some of our strengths, one of which was digital work. We used film in our very first production in 2003 – Romeo & Juliet – and we’ve used film fairly constantly during the nearly 20 years since we’ve been going. We were able to draw on that experience to produce online productions at the very beginning of the pandemic when we ‘staged’ a Zoom version of our very entertaining musical production of Twelfth Night. We plunged into green screen technology – such as it was less than two years ago – and managed to attract audiences from all over the UK and around the world. We also have a long track record of staging productions outdoors, so we were able to run our annual Roman Theatre Festival – at Verulamium Park just outside St Albans – in a short form in 2020 and then in a much longer form in 2021. Q How important is it for you to receive the financial boost recently announced from the Culture Recovery Fund? A This is the first public funding we’ve ever

Q Looking back, what have been the stand out moments in OVO’s history? A I think two come to mind immediately; the first was our debut at the fabulous open air Minack Theatre in Cornwall in 2016. We took our production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It, which was the first time we’d played to a large audience outside our local area; we received an amazing reaction from the audiences at the Minack and we had such a great time we were absolutely delighted to be invited back in 2018 with Much Ado About Nothing, and in 2021 with The Winter’s Tale. My second stand-out moment is definitely the first night of the Roman Theatre Festival in 2020 knowing we were one of the first theatres to re-open after the first wave of the pandemic. We experienced everything that could be thrown at us including the theatre being completely flooded on the morning of our first night! Being ready to

THE WINTER'S TALE
“There's a diverse community that has a real passion for the arts” open with our first night double bill, The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry V, was, ultimately, so exciting. The atmosphere was amazing; we were thrilled to be back in front of a live audience, and the audience were thrilled to be back at the theatre. Q How great is it to stage many of your productions at The Maltings Theatre? A It’s really great to run an intimate venue that enjoys a city centre location that has amazing support from the local community, and which brings really distinctive live performance to a discerning local audience. Q Where else in Hertfordshire
do you stage work at? A We work regularly at the Roman Theatre in Verulamium Park; in the past we’ve performed all over Hertfordshire including the Old Town Hall in Hemel Hempstead, Trestle Arts Base, the Alban Arena, and the Town Hall in St Albans, Hertford Theatre, the Queen Mother Theatre in Hitchin, and the Hat Factory in Luton. Q How long has OVO been based in St Albans – and do you also live there? A OVO’s always been based in St Albans

received – it’s very exciting and further validates what we do. While we managed to keep producing work in the first year of the pandemic and we would have carried on regardless, the grant has enabled us to produce work on a bigger scale and the importance of that is that we’ve been able to create over 100 employment opportunities for actors and creatives.

and I live in Hitchin – although I did get married in St Albans Abbey! Being located in the area is fantastic for everything we do – there’s a very diverse community that has a real passion and enthusiasm for the arts. Q What are your three favourite places to visit in St Albans, or further afield in Hertfordshire? A The Fox Pub in Willian for amazing food, the magnificent gardens at St Paul’s Walden Bury, and the Waffle House in St Albans for the best breakfast. Q Finally, any new year resolutions? A Read more plays by non-white
playwrights. Theatre still has a long way to go to represent the full breadth of human experience.

DETAIL
Celebrated chef Clodagh McKenna on the inspiration for her new cookbook, reinventing classics and why she'd rather stay in for dinner By MARK KEBBLE
F
or anyone who has watched Clodagh McKenna on ITV's This Morning, you will be familiar with her enthusiastic personality. Rustling up dishes in no time at all in front of a million viewers on live TV, McKenna has been known to break out into song while dealing with the time constraints placed on her. So it comes as little surprise that when talking about deadlines and the fact she only started working on her new cookbook at the start 2021, she makes mince meat of any kind of pressure. “I had a lot of fun doing it,” she says with a smile. In Minutes was partly inspired by her work on ITV’s flagship morning show, but also an ever-growing and inquisitive following on social media. “With This Morning, all the dishes have to be fast to make, with accessible ingredients and need to be do-able, as we have got such a wide audience,” she says in her familiar Irish twang. “Also, on Instagram, I have this feedback constantly from people about time.
How long does that take to cook? Do you have alternatives that are faster to cook in the evening? I said to my publishers about doing a book that had recipes that can be cooked in 10 minutes, 20 minutes and 30 minutes. Those were the times I had in my head, but I thought that surely there’s been a book done like this already. I started researching and found that wasn’t the case, so I said to my publishers the book is called In Minutes and they got it immediately.” Fast forward 12 months later and In Minutes has been published to great fanfare. For someone who isn’t a great cook (me), the book is wonderfully accessible, well designed and doesn’t skimp on the number of recipes you can rustle up at home. “We spent so much time researching different cuisines,” McKenna explains. “There’s quite a lot of Asian and Italian cooking in the book because they are really simple. I remember someone who I worked with on a previous book saying to me that I should look into Japanese tempuras because they are so fast. I thought are they
really? What do you think?” Wouldn’t even attempt it, I say. “Exactly. Then I started researching it and testing out recipes, and then I thought why isn’t everyone doing Japanese tempuras? They are so delicious and you can cook them in 10 minutes.” Classics, too, are reinvented in the book. “Spaghetti Bolognese is such a popular dish, but to do a really good one you have to cook it for a few hours. I thought surely there must be a way to quicken that process up. I spent a whole day coming up with a speedy spiced spaghetti Bolognese, looking at how to make it more flavoursome faster. We came up with about six, then knocked that down to the one in the book, which is gorgeous. It’s about adding in more spices like smoked paprika to get that flavour going faster, and dried oregano, chilli flakes and sundried tomatoes, which have a really intense flavour that you usually only get after a couple of hours. It was uncovering all these tricks that speed up the process of a lot of dishes that we love.” Discussing the number of recipes in the A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

FOOD & DRINK • INTERVIEW NOT A BAD SPOT FOR A WEDDING
book, McKenna suggests that was all part of the fun in putting it together. “I have definitely been in a recipe developing bubble over the past year,” she laughs. “For This Morning I have to come up with five new recipes every week, and I do a lot of brand collaborations where they approach me and I come up with recipes for them. Now everybody comes to me for the same thing: it’s always fast, easy, family-orientated and accessible ingredients. This was the most exciting book I have ever done because I am so immersed in it right now, whereas two years ago [when she released her Suppers to Celebrate the Seasons cookbook] I didn’t have a TV show I was cooking on every week. When you are in that bubble and it’s your work, the recipes just keep flowing.” Talking about home life with husband Harry Herbert [they wed in the summer at Highclere Castle across the county border], it sounds like it’s always a busman’s
holiday – “I cook every single night,” she says – helped in no part by her amazing kitchen garden. “It’s brilliant,” she enthuses. “I never gardened like this before, it all happened over lockdown. I started growing our own vegetables – yes, I was one of those people – and I absolutely love it. I spend Sundays gardening. To see something growing from seed and having that first harvest from it, and then coming up with something to cook with it, it’s just brilliant.” Given the quirks of how deadlines work in the publishing world, we are speaking in the run up to Christmas. Unsurprisingly, given how this interview has gone, she won’t feel the pressure when it comes to Christmas Day cooking. “We always have a big Christmas,” she says. “Our families will be around and I always cook. I get my turkey from Griffins butchers in Newbury, and then I get smoked salmon sent over from Ireland, oysters too, and all the rest I try to do as locally as possible. Because it’s my work, I don’t find it stressful.” Maybe there’s an idea here for her next cookbook… In Minutes by Clodagh McKenna, published by Kyle Books, priced £20. Photography by Dora Kazmierak. C LO DAG H M C K E N NA PICKS OUT HER FAVO U R I T E R E C I P E S F RO M I N M I N U T E S Are there three dishes you particularly love right now? That’s so hard… Tonight I would love to have the chicken katsu ramen. I would do the Japanese tempura with soy dipping sauce as that’s just banging with flavours. And the linguine puttanesca, that’s a meat free one. It’s so simple to make it, all I have to do is get my pasta on cooking and then add some garlic, tomatoes, anchovies, chilli flakes and capers. It’s just bursting with flavour. If you went out to eat, where would you head to? I love cooking so much, and every time I think we will go out, I think “oh that means I don’t get to experiment with this recipe or that recipe”. But my favourite is The Wellington Arms [which is in Berkshire], I love that place, it’s my number one spot. The food is fantastic.

Chicken, Coconut and Pineapple Curry Serves 4
The combination of both coconut milk and creamed coconut in this curry adds a real gloss and weight to the sauce, giving it a gorgeous, velvety texture. If you can't get creamed coconut just double-up on the tinned. During the last moments of these exotic sunshine curries, I often throw a handful of roasted nuts to boost the salt and the beach-holiday feel. If you’re not a fan of nuts or don’t have any to hand, you can leave these out without any detriment to the dish.
INGREDIENTS • 2 thumb-sized pieces fresh root ginger, peeled • 5 tbsp vegetable oil • 2 onions, finely chopped • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 3 skinless, boneless chicken breasts (approx. 600g/1lb 5oz), chopped into 2cm/3⁄4in cubes • 2 tbsp garam masala • 1 heaped tsp ground coriander • 1 tsp ground turmeric • 1⁄4 tsp chilli powder • 100g/31⁄2oz creamed coconut • 400ml/14fl oz canned coconut milk • 2 green chillies, finely sliced • 11⁄2 tsp salt • 1 tsp brown sugar • 10 chunks canned pineapple, cut into 1–2cm/1⁄2–3⁄4in pieces • 100g/31⁄2oz roasted salted cashew nuts • small handful fresh coriander/ cilantro, finely chopped, to garnish • 1 red chilli, finely sliced, to garnish • cooked rice, or flatbreads, to serve
and cashews to the pan and stir to combine, adding a little of the juice from the canned pineapple if the mixture is too dry. Leave to cook, stirring occasionally, for 5–10 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through. Scatter with chopped coriander/cilantro and sliced red chilli, then serve hot with rice or wraps alongside.
MillionDollar Dahl Serves 4
METHOD 1 Finely mince one of the pieces of ginger and slice the other into fine matchsticks. Set aside. 2 Heat the oil in a large pan over a medium heat. Add the onions, garlic and minced ginger and fry, stirring continuously, for 8 minutes, until golden brown. Add the chicken to the pan and stir to combine with the onions, then add the garam masala, ground coriander, ground turmeric and chilli powder. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes, to seal the chicken and coat it in the spices. 3 Add the creamed coconut, coconut milk, ginger matchsticks, sliced chillies, salt, sugar, pineapple
In Eastern Europe it is tradition at New Year to have these whole lentil dishes. I add a little more spice than my motherin-law’s original recipe calls for, but the extra oomph really works. The green discs of lentil represent little coins and a wish for wealth in the year ahead. This is a wonderful centrepiece to a meal, regardless of your guests needs, as it is both gluten-free and vegan, as well as filling and delicious.
INGREDIENTS • 4 tbsp vegetable oil • 1 tsp cumin seeds • 1 onion, roughly chopped • 1 cube frozen crushed garlic
or 3 garlic cloves, crushed • 2 cubes frozen crushed ginger or 2 thumb-sized pieces fresh ginger, peeled and grated • 1 bay leaf • 1 fat green chilli, sliced • 800g /1lb 12oz canned green lentils, drained • 1 tsp ground turmeric • 1 tbsp garam masala • 1 tsp ground cumin • 400g/14oz canned chopped tomatoes • 11⁄2 tsp salt • small handful fresh coriander/ cilantro, roughly chopped
METHOD 1 Heat the oil in a large pan over a medium heat, then add the cumin seeds and fry for a few seconds, until they are fragrant and have turned a deep golden brown. Add the onion, garlic, ginger, bay leaf and sliced chilli, and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 8 minutes, until the onions are soft and golden. 2 Add the lentils, ground turmeric, garam masala, ground cumin and chopped tomatoes to the pan and stir to combine. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a lively simmer and cook for 20 minutes, adding a splash of water if the mixture gets too dry, until the lentils are tender. Add the salt to the pan to taste, then stir through the chopped fresh coriander/ cilantro. Serve hot.

INGREDIENTS
Rice Krispie Bhel Puri Serves 4
Bhel Puri is a common street-food snack in India that is made with fried chickpea/ garbanzo beans threads, puffed rice and roasted peanuts, and dressed with all that is hot and sharp. When my parents first came to the UK, they missed this midmorning snack dreadfully, so invented this version using a well-known breakfast cereal. It’s as ludicrous a secret pleasure as any Indian family could have.
• 100g/31⁄2oz/4 cups crisped rice cereal (such as Rice Krispies) • 3 tbsp mustard oil • 1 handful roasted peanuts • 2 mild green chillies, finely chopped • 1 red onion, finely chopped • 1 small bunch coriander/cilantro, leaves and stalks finely chopped • 1 tsp chaat masala • squeeze of lemon juice
METHOD 1 Place a small frying pan/skillet over a low heat and add the crisped rice cereal. Warm the cereal for 3 minutes, tossing in the pan to prevent it from catching, then transfer to a large bowl. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir until everything is well combined. Serve immediately, while the cereal is still warm and crisp.

Dylan's At The King's Arms Why you won't miss out during Dry January
O
ver the years we have seen the Dry January movement take off, with people up and down the country setting themselves new year's resolutions to encourage their own personal self improvement. Therefore, January has unintentionally forced many people to stay home, avoiding bars and restaurants, not wishing to be encouraged to ruin any personal progress made. Dylan's have had so much support from the community since they were allowed to reopent their doors following the multiple lockdowns, they want to show that same support to those willing to participate in having an alcohol free January this year. Dylans At The Kings Arms will be taking part for the entirety of January by offering a fantastic selection of alcohol free draught beers, spirits and cocktails, while also hosting an Alcohol Free Tap Takeover event in association with WhichCraft Beer Reviews on Tuesday 18 January. Following on from the success of December’s Tap Takeover with The Kernel Brewery, they decided to try something slightly different. There are a vast number of incredible breweries out there currently creating some amazing alcohol free beers, so what better way to present these beers than on their 9 Tap Beer Wall? They will be showcasing a range of non alcoholic styles from some of the biggest craft breweries. Lagers, IPA’s, stouts, or sample a selection of non-alcoholic gin and tonics from distilleries such as Warner’s, Sipsmith and Seedlip. Take part too in their giveaway for your chance to win a selection of alcohol free goodies for you to try at any time. dylanskingsarms.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

STEPHEN JOHANSSON
FEED THE
SOUL
A St Albans-based health expert writes about his journey from Hollywood to taking his knowledge into your homes By STEPHEN JOHANSSON
I
started my personal training career in 1998. It was a time when personal trainers were seen as a luxury and only for the rich and famous. My early career took me on a journey to Hollywood to work with the cast and crew of the summer blockbuster Lost in Space. From this came kit sponsorship with Adidas, an ambassador role for Garmin and a column with the Daily Mirror as their online wellness expert. Celebrity clients such as Gary Kemp, David Baddiel, Gillian Anderson and Nicole Appleton helped establish me as one of the best trainers in the UK. I’ve written health clinics for various publications, appeared on television and radio as a fitness expert, and written regularly for Huffington Post. In 2005, I set up Fitness 12 Retreats, establishing partnerships with La Manga Club, Spain and Champney’s in the UK. My bespoke wellness experiences allow people to work with me to recharge, educate and nourish themselves. Over the last ten years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with global heads of business and their families. My skillset has evolved
50
and I’m now an accomplished wellness chef, strong advocate of mindfulness and champion of mental health. Understanding the link between the food you eat and your physical and mental health can transform your life. The power of deep blissful sleep can never be underestimated either, it’s the Holy Grail of personal wellness and is where everything good in life starts. I believe you need to be an all rounder with your health as you are only as good as your weakest link. Fast forward to 2021 and the global pandemic has made everyone think more deeply about their personal health and vulnerability. I’ve decided to adapt my wellness retreat to the online world of wellbeing. Twenty years in health and wellness has taught me consistency over time will always bring results. If it’s a quick fix, then it’s exactly that: a fix. Sustainable, transformative change comes from understanding the link between the food you eat, your physical strength, stamina and flexibility and your mental health. Personal wellness is a full-time job and rightly so. Sooner or later you’ll wish you’d started looking after yourself. In

fact, “I wish I’d started earlier” is the most common phrase I’ve heard throughout my career, regardless of the client’s age. My vast experience allows me to analyse and understand people’s wellness needs after just one brief conversation. I listen to to my client’s life journey and expectations. I then create an immediate and permanent wellness solution. Philosopher and author, Alain Du Botton, once described me as “the ideal trainer for people who are scared of training. His gentle and encouraging manner is perfect for one getting started”. I believe I can help anyone achieve their wellness goals, whether it be losing weight, toning up, learning to cook, training for an event or undergoing rehabilitation from
an injury. I have a broad, holistic and well practiced philosophy that always delivers. With businesses now allowing their employees to work remotely, I’ve set up The Good Health Chef. Companies can book onto my exclusive mindfulness workshops where employees share stories, connect with each other and learn the value of mindfulness whilst making bread. It’s also an opportunity for me to emphasise the need to nourish yourself with homemade, chemical free food. “The patented Contour Pocket System has a unique cushioning ability”
SLEEP SECRETS How to achieve the perfect night’s sleep? Start with the perfect mattress By EVE HERBERT
T
he perfect night’s sleep is the holy grail of life. The quality of our sleep defines our day – and a good night will always lead to happier, more productive and successful waking hours. But how to achieve it? Most important is, of course, the bed itself. Swedish bed company Carpe Diem Beds was founded 25 year ago by chiropractor Börje Thuleskär, a firm believer in the importance of sleep for body and mind. He sought out the best mattress on the market, but wasn’t impressed by it and one day fell asleep on a bed of heather by the sea in Sweden – where he realised that nature contoured to his body far more than any bed ever had. This led him to embark on a quest to build the perfect
bed, one that would mimic the feeling of weightlessness he had had on the heather. This quest took thousands of hours and a partnership with the Spinal Unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Sweden. The final result is Carpe Diem Beds' patented Contour Pocket System, which has a unique cushioning ability. It gently yields and supports at the same time, instantly moulding to your body’s contours and changing with your every movement. You can feel the mattress embrace your hips and shoulders while gently supporting your lumbar and waist. Your spine is relieved of tension, and your muscles can finally relax. The sensation is unique: almost weightless and quite unlike most standard mattresses. Just like lying on a bed of heather on the cliffs by the Swedish sea, in fact. Carpe Diem Beds opened a showroom on Wigmore Street last year, where visitors can experience the company’s ethos first hand. Its innovative approach is visible on their website, where an interactive bed configurator introduces the available options, revealing how each bed can be matched with personal preferences. Each bed is customisable in size, finish and fabrics. Top of the range is Vindö, the most innovative adjustable bed that offers automatic lumbar and neck support, with head and foot rests that can be lowered or raised to suit your needs. It has a variety of massage functions that can be controlled via an app, as well as built in under-bed lighting. Skaftö is Carpe Diem Beds’ most exclusive continental bed and its moveable mid-section can be adjusted, with built-in back support customised by remote control. There’s no better single route to wellbeing for body and soul than rest and sleep, and that’s why a Carpe Diem bed is a longterm investment in your overall health. Oliver Bootmann, VP Brand of Carpe Diem Beds, says: “Why compromise when you don’t have to? Beds can and should soothe both the body and the soul.” CA R P E D I E M B E D S 15 Wigmore Street, W1, 020 3982 3252 carpediembeds.co.uk

Root of the
PROBLEM
Worried about potential hair loss? Take a closer look at your lifestyle and diet
I “The long term benefit of a personal trainer can be worth its weight in gold”
By TRISHA BULLER
t is becoming common practice to see more patients present themselves to me at my clinic with what they feel is hair shedding. They feel their ponytails are getting thinner, they’re noticing more hair in the brush, plug and on the pillow. This triggers an anxiety, which in itself can exacerbate the condition. Our hair needs protein to grow healthy and strong. This starts from within, so we always look at the holistic approach to an individual when they experience some hair loss and scalp issues. Although we have a great choice of fantastic cosmetically pleasing hair shampoos and conditioners, this will only help cosmetically, which is an important part of maintaining healthy hair. The hair structure is a complex chain of amino acids made from protein; hence protein is essential in our everyday nutritional intake. The blood feeds our hair carrying oxygen, nutrients, vitamins and minerals to our essential organs, and the hair receives what is left after its strenuous journey. So if you’re missing out on meals this could have a detrimental effect, long term, on our hair growth cycle.
Our bodies can only draw on a reserve if there is one, like a car needs water, oil and fuel; our bodies need vitamins, minerals and nutrients. The most effective way of uptaking all these important minerals and vitamins and nutrients is from our food. Supplements can assist in the healthy hair growth cycle, especially if our diets are compromised from yo yo diets, ill health and missing out on meals. I have been using and recommending to my patients / clients Viviscal professional for several years now, and have seen some fantastic results. However, remember if there are hormonal or medical underlying issues then it’s a different treatment plan and professional advice must be sought from a qualified trichologist, dermatologist or other professional body. Exercise is an important part of our daily lives to help maintain strong muscles, a toned physique, healthy heart, lungs and other organs. This also releases endorphins from the brain, which give us the feel good factor and is key for keeping a focus and stabilising our mental health. Exercise combined with diet are an integral part of maintaining a heathy lifestyle; however, too much exercise and too little of the right food groups can cause long term issues, including joint and muscular problems, along with possible deficiency compromising healthy hair growth. Personal trainers like many other professionals can seem expensive, and many of you might feel this is not in your budget. However, the long term benefit can be worth its weight in gold. Look for a PT that has a good knowledge of not just exercise, but nutrition too. This will give you an all-round healthy balance. I see many individuals come to me, expressing their concern of hair loss, and believing they have a healthy lifestyle and diet, to only find out through our consultation journey that actually their exercise regime is burning more than their nutritional intake of important vitamins. Johan Florez is very professional and passionate about health, fitness and nutrition – check him out on @jaymfit and he will keep you, and your hair, in good shape. One step at a
TIME
After centuries of this type of priming, why do we think that magical ‘motivation’ is going to override all of that survival instinct? The problem with motivation is that it’s not a tangible concept or a tool set. If you speak to a CBT therapist, they give you tools that you can use to lift your mood. They might say “exercise three times a week” or “write your thoughts

I
want to break down the myth of ‘motivation’. I see too many clients punishing themselves for lacking this mystical power, desperately trying to locate it somewhere, and feeling exasperated when they can’t. When food was scarce and humans had predators to worry about, they had to constantly be on the move. Catching prey or running from predators was about survival, they didn’t have a choice BUT to move. Our modern lifestyles present us with a different challenge. You more than likely don’t have to worry about hunting or
“Your brain has been hard wired to reduce energy expenditure” predators, so when you don’t have the innate drive to go for a run and expend calories needlessly, it is a natural response. When this happens do not beat yourself up for it. Your brain has been hard wired to reduce energy expenditure as much as possible.
down”. These are practical things you can do to help lift your mood once you get into the habit. You can rely on habits to be ten times more powerful than motivation because they contain rewards that have been hard wired into your brain. Let’s use anxiety as an example. You feel anxious and stressed. You usually get into a spiral of negative thinking, but now you’re making a conscious effort to interrupt it with a positive action; you go for a 20-minute run. After your run, your feel-good hormones lift your mood and you experience a “runner’s high”. It felt so good, you do it for the second time, and third, and so on. Suddenly your brain is making the decision for you. You get your workout gear on, and from there it’s autopilot. Here’s how to start: 1. Put your workout clothes on; 2. Put on some music; 3. Start warming up; 4. Aim for a 30 minute workout but accept it if it’s shorter; 5. Repeat the exact same routine four days a week for a month. If you feel demotivated, just aim for step one and see how far you get. 07949738546 / workthat.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

The long and
SHORT OF IT Absolutely Hertfordshire meets Paul Lesnik, owner of Headcase Barbers in St Albans, to trace his hairdressing journey
Q How did you want to be different? A I came from a very customer service
focused background and really wanted to put that at the forefront of the business. I also wanted to create a space where hairdressing met barbering to bring the best of both worlds together, so guys could get a great shape led haircut with either clippers or scissors or a hybrid of both, and yet could enjoy that higher quality environment with the offering of drinks and in depth expertise in hair care. Q What kind of experience
Q Pre-Headcase, what was your
background in hairdressing?
A I started my apprenticeship in a well-
established salon in St Albans at the age of 16. I went into hairdressing rather than strictly barbering in order to gather a more wellrounded skill set. I qualified within 18 months, which was quicker than normal, and then worked my way up to senior stylist level. I then took a short break to work at my parents’ business to learn some of the ins and outs of running a company, as I always believed I’d have my own one day. I came back into the hair industry for a further four years, before taking the opportunity to open my shop. Q How did you come to launch Headcase
in St Albans seven years ago? A I’d started building a bigger male clientele at my previous salon and always knew I really enjoyed cutting shorter hairstyles. I felt I was also losing the passion for working with longer hair lengths and the excess blow drying that goes along with it, so felt it was the right thing to do to concentrate on what I was really passionate about, which was men’s hair. St Albans is where I was born and raised, so I was passionate about opening up here and trying to create a great offering.
do you like to offer?
A Our mission statement is: the genuine,
unpretentious barbershop. I was very aware that uber-masculine spaces can sometimes feel daunting, so I wanted to create a vibe where all feel welcome. Q Do you expect to see any
particular hair trends in 2022?
A We are definitely seeing longer hair
lengths, a result of the lockdown and guys growing out their locks and actually enjoying it, which is a nice change. The mullet is also back with a bang, which is always nostalgic – whilst not for everyone, it is really an enjoyable hairstyle to cut and create! Q Do you have anything new planned as
we head into the new year?
A To be honest we are just looking to really
knuckle down and move on from the whole madness that has been 2020/21, and hopefully leave it behind us and enjoy working a full year. I’d like to expand when the time is right, but things need to settle down first. H E A D CA S E B A R B E R S 12 Holywell Hill, St Albans, AL1 1BZ headcase-barbers.com/st-albans

FIVE MINUTES WITH... JOSH AT STUDIUM BODY WORKS
By ELLIE-MAE HAMMOND
What is Studium Body Works and what do you do there? Studium Body Works is a luxury, uncrowded and by-appointment only-Personal Training, Rehabilitation & Boxing Studio, in the heart of London’s West End. We are a team of highly qualified health care and fitness professionals, most of whom have competed at the highest level of sport, and we have made the conscious choice to do this job and at a standard of excellence. Is it the training programs and therapy techniques themselves that hit that standard? Our training programs are evidence based. Adaptable and are integrated with our Myofascial & Combination Therapy, which is highly successful, but that is only part of the experience here. First, we practice the highest standard of customer service as a baseline and then deliver the very best for each individual client and patient. What sort of clients and patients do you get here? It’s mixed. We have a whole roster of amateur athletes, an explorer (South Pole right now), many post-op rehab, five professional combat athletes, but surprisingly most of our patients and clients lead a stressful work life and need postural strength training and therapy as well as the release of exercising regularly. What services are on offer here at this fantastic space? We offer personal training, Myofascial Release & Combination Therapy, postural strength training, real boxing and kickboxing training, nutrition services, yoga, Pilates, and massage services. studiumbodyworks.com

K
ris Pace, COO of Kobox in London, explains the benefits of boxing, offers beginner’s tips, and why it’s especially important for women to enjoy the sport.
THE IMPORTANCE OF WOMEN LEARNING TO BOX Boxing will help women to feel more confident as it is a reminder that we can indeed become good at a skill that is so heavily dominated by masculinity. We are strong, we are athletic and we are powerful. Boxing requires all
of these elements and knowing that I, and other women, possess these traits is empowering in itself. I think every woman should try boxing at least once.
THE FITNESS BENEFITS Physically, boxing is incredibly demanding. It is a full-body activity that is going to get you burning calories, developing lean muscle and strengthening your joints. You may be great at lifting weights, or running 10km, but if you’ve never boxed before, you’ll soon know about it once you start, feeling the burn in places you didn’t even know you could.
THE MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS Energy, empowerment and endorphins. Every punch is like a mental and physical release. You have to step outside of your own head, drop all of those life worries and just be in the moment, mental clarity and focus. Combine that with improved hand-eye coordination, cardiovascular fitness, muscle and joint strength and some dancefloor music, you will walk out of KOBOX class feeling strong and powerful.

Help is at HAND Kay Naden, co-founder of Nannies 4 Grannies, on how their service is geared towards improving the wellbeing of clients in Hertfordshire
EXPECT A CARING VISITING TEAM
Q What inspired the launch of Nannies 4 Grannies in 2014? A I wanted a new challenge. My background was supporting vulnerable people, and [co-founder] Shelley was struggling with supporting parents that lived two hours away. Together we built the business model for Nannies 4 Grannies. Q What makes you different? A We are a small, local approachable
company. We do not offer personal care, but a caring and conscientious visiting team. This team feedback any concerns or updates regarding the client to the office and we then act accordingly, whether it is contacting the family, doctor, organising a lift to an appointment or just picking up a pint of milk. Q Where do you cover in Hertfordshire? A Our main client base is in St Albans
and Harpenden, but we travel as far as London Colney, Hatfield and Hemel Hempstead and surrounding villages. Q What kind of home support do you offer? A We work to support our clients where it is needed: meal preparation, shopping, laundry, light housework, trips out for leisure or appointments. Our main focus is wellbeing and companionship, someone to talk to.
Q Do they end up becoming friends? A We like to think we build a friendship
and bond with all our clients.
Q How do you find your staff ? A We get a lot of enquiries from people
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Q How do you go about pairing a member of your staff with a client? A We are confident with our staff, but understand that people are all different and you cannot always get it right straight away and it may take time. The perfect match is our aim. We work to keep continuity initially to gain our clients confidence and slowly introduce others as required. We find that this works for us as a team and our clients enjoy the different people they meet. Q Do you think the partnership helps with a client’s wellbeing? A Most definitely, our team are chatty and warm and will make positive suggestions to client’s worries and lift their spirits where they can.
wanting to give something back to their community, they like the idea of helping vulnerable people before they need personal or medical care. A lot of our staff come through word of mouth; one of our nannies used our services for her mother some years ago and applied to work with us earlier this year and has been an amazing addition to our team. Q What’s planned for 2022? A To continue providing our essential
services and promoting much needed social events back into our clients’ lives. They have had two years of isolating, social distancing and loneliness, which has had a significant impact on their lives. In addition we are looking to extend our services too: DE-CLUTTER SERVICE - to help people sort whatever it is they need sorting. GARDENING – lawn cutting, clear leaves and general tidy up. ODD-JOBS – changing bulbs, putting up pictures/shelves/keysafes. RE-CYCLE – any mobility equipment, walkers/zimmer frames/shower stools. nannies4grannies.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

W A R M
FRONT Absolutely Hertfordshire talks to Nick Duggan of The Radiator Centre in St Albans on dealing with lockdowns, supporting staff and keeping us toasty By MARK KEBBLE
Q Congratulations on winning Lockdown Leader at the SME Hertfordshire Business Awards. What does this recognition mean to you? A This is really an award to be shared as everyone in the business had a part to play. As the situation developed there was a collective coming together about how best to manage things with the limited information available. Everybody acted admirably and much of what was positive we have managed to retain in the business almost two years on. Q Fingers crossed for the national awards
later this week, but looking back, when we first went into lockdown what did you do? A I think this was a challenge for everyone. Being told to shut our business down was a shock. With the shops no longer open we transferred all our calls and emails to our back office and worked from there. You start finding new ways of working and this has actually worked to our advantage after the lockdowns ended.
Q How important was it to you to support your staff? A Our staff are key. Like us, they didn’t truly know how things would work out and there would have been some initial fears that we had to allay. We tried to be as supportive as we could and staff became a lot more supportive of each other. We had regular calls with individuals and team Zoom calls and communication in general improved.
Q What kind of service did you continue to offer during lockdown? A We worked by phone and email primarily. However, with no longer being able to do some of the key things expected of us – show people around a showroom, provide colour options – we started looking at other ways to interact with our customers. Amongst other things, we had our suppliers produce small colour samples for posting, and we initiated WhatsApp and Zoom tours of the showroom. Q What did launching the e-commerce site offer customers? A Naively, we were always concerned that a straight e-commerce proposition was not going to offer the levels of service we would be aiming to give someone either in the showroom or over the phone. Instead, we found the opposite. Customers were prepared to buy over the web, but this has still allowed us to go back to them and help with some of the smaller details. There are a couple of instances where a small sale through the website has led to larger orders. Q Looking back, when did you launch The Radiator Centre and what inspired it? A Our involvement in radiators dates back to 2003, but we only became The Radiator Centre in 2013. Prior to that our focus had mainly been to the trade, but we recognised that the decision making was increasingly being made by the end-user and they wanted to physically see much of what was available. Q How do you think you are different from the competition? A Whilst much of our competition trade solely through the internet, we do have the advantage of offering a physical presence with radiators to touch. In many cases we are talking about radiators in relation to other aspects of architectural or interior design, so for many people it is important to understand what they will be looking at.
NICK DUGGAN
TUBA
Q How do you come up with your designs? A We work with some incredibly clever
radiator companies that come up with the designs that we sell. We really curate the best ones that we think add something to our range. Of particular importance are the heat outputs – we need radiators that are going to heat the size of room in the climate that we have in the UK. Some radiators can be more ‘form over function’.
Q Talking of lockdown, did you feel the St Albans community coming together at this time? A The retail community in St Albans has come together a lot more. There is certainly more dialogue taking place and a shared desire to see things improve in St Albans by making it a more attractive shopping destination. I have been in and around St Albans for large portions of my life. It is a city that offers a great deal – proximity to the countryside and to London are just two key benefits. And then you have the history that surrounds us and that is hard to beat. Q What are your plans for 2022? A We still see 2022 as being quite challenging.
However, all of the things that have happened over the last couple of years have, I believe, made us work more efficiently and effectively. In 2022 we intend to build on that with an additional showroom and the continual development of the website.

“We continue to see families opting for the big open plan kitchen and living areas” KITCHEN ISLANDS ARE A POPULAR CHOICE
A clean SWEEP
Need a little post-Christmas home makeover inspiration? Chris Reeves, director at Glotech, talks tidying and trends Q How do you look back on 2021? A In some ways 2021 has been more
challenging than 2020. With Covid still very much part of our lives, we have the ongoing challenges: staff coming down with symptoms or Covid itself, and staff working remotely when needed. On top of that we have the ongoing supplier issues and increase in prices. Q As we head into the new year, what
do customers tend to come to you for?
A In December we have the last kitchens
to fit of the year amid the big rush to get everything wrapped up, pardon the pun. We are also very busy delivering and installing appliances and as we get closer those distress purchases as faulty kitchen appliances need changing ready for the big day, and this relates especially to ovens. It’s very important that the turkey is ready and on the table. Q Do you have tips for the post-
Christmas clean up operation?
A It is always a good idea to check that the dishwasher is in good order and ready for Christmas, and Glotech can always pop out and check that it is serviced. Also don't forget that Glotech still offer vacuum cleaner repairs, which is how the business started 46 years ago. Q Do you have any exciting
launches planned for January?
A January is extra busy this year with
kitchen installations booked in. In January we will be running a sale and it is often when people are starting to get ready for their extension starting in March or April when the weather starts to get a bit better. New products are generally launched in March or April. Q January aside, what else does
Glotech have planned for 2022?
A With the pandemic still very much
part of our lives it is very hard to make concrete plans, however we do have some exciting developments. In 2022
Glotech will be updating our systems to improve stock movement and order processing. We will also be improving the displays you see in the showroom. Q Do you expect to see any
particular trends next year?
A We continue to see families opting for the
big open plan kitchen and living areas, with large islands with seating for friends and family and the latest in home appliances. American fridge freezers are still very popular as well as self cleaning ovens and the continued preference in steam cooking. The latest ovens cook with steam and fan elements ensuring healthy cooking and retaining the flavours of the food. Glotech offer so many options in kitchen styles and the traditional British shaker style kitchens are still very much on trend, with greys, blues and greens being firm favourites. Stone work surfaces in a light colour, often a Carrara marble effect, help give contrast and reflect the light helping to make the room bright and airy. Our Italian kitchens are the choice for contemporary kitchens and the current trend for these is darker colours and even matt black teamed with wood grain. Darker work tops add to the overall look. D R E A M S P A C E How to design your bedroom for sleep comfort as well as aesthetics By EVE HERBERT
S “The look is luxurious but minimalist, and the neutral tones are designed to be mixed and matched”
wedish bedrooms are worldleading for their fusion of nature and innovation, and for their muted, minimalist aesthetic and clean lines. One brand that embodies this is Carpe Diem Beds, a household name in Sweden, associated with the ultimate in sleep comfort and design credentials. Treating sleep as a luxury and yet also a necessity is one of their core brand values – and therefore crafting a serious space for it is paramount. Carpe Diem Beds' ethos centres on creating a cohesive bedroom, incorporating a range of considered pieces that complement the bed as centrepiece, with a dedication to optimising the bedroom environment as an oasis of calm (and thereby revolutionising your sleep). While choosing the perfect mattress for you is at the heart of the in-store experience, there’s a strong focus on bedroom design and streamlining, so that the bed you choose can be housed in an environment that’s conducive to optimum sleep health. For the UK market, Carpe Diem Beds introduced 36 different Designers Guild fabrics for beds and headboards that can be colour matched with carpets, cushions and curtains. Rui Franca of the Wigmore Street showroom explains: “In selecting the fabrics we look at colours that are neutral and subtle. Bright colours are energising and we need to be relaxed in a bedroom, so no oranges or shiny finishes. It’s all about neutral tones. Scandinavian design usually keeps tones neutral to create a sense of calm in the mind.” Fabrics are beiges and greys with some darker tones and maybe some light pinks at the colourful end of the neutral palette. “In store we have access to side tables, carpets and throw cushions. We have a slick metal side
table and lamps too, with finishes in chrome and marble, all in calming soothing tones.” The look is luxurious but minimalist and the neutral tones are designed to be mixed and matched, alongside lifestyle products such as kimonos, slippers, sleep masks and scented candles. All this high-tech innovation is fundamentally grounded in a respect for nature and craftsmanship. Using the best and most sustainable raw materials including slow-growth Nordic pine, Talalay latex and organic cotton, expert bed-makers craft each bed by hand in a Swedish manufacturing facility. Each bed is built from start to finish by the same person, who signs the frame at the end as an ultimate marker of quality. Carpe Diem Beds’ innovative approach is visible on their website, where an interactive bed configurator introduces the available options, revealing how each bed can be matched with personal preferences. Each bed is customisable in size, finish and fabric, with a variety of headboard options. CA R P E D I E M B E D S 15 Wigmore Street, W1 • 020 3982 3252 carpediembeds.co.uk

A
t the turn of the year, we are usually thinking about our new year resolutions and fresh starts. Perhaps the dawn of 2022 will be a little different. Certainly, in education, there is a feeling that things are “getting back to normal”, whatever normal now means. GCSE and A-level exams will resume in the summer months albeit with some mitigations on syllabi; the year should hold the excitement of field trips, residential visits and full resumption of Parents’ Evenings, school fairs and concerts, after their tentative resurrection during the latter part of 2021. So what are the hopes, dreams and resolutions that you have for your children, family life and education this year? Of course, all parents want their children to be happy and fulfilled, but here are some thoughts to ponder…
SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS ARE BACK
IS IT TIME TO GIVE YOUR GROWING CHILD THE NEXT STEP TO INDEPENDENCE? As parents, it is often difficult to let go, whatever the age of your child. Remember that small steps forward are the way to becoming a responsible confident adult and, at a young age, develop a widening circle of relationships. It is always good to remember that it is much harder to pull back your child’s independence, so take little steps and build gradually.
IS IT TIME TO GIVE YOUR CHILD MORE RESPONSIBILITY? Parenting today tends to absolve our growing children of a great deal of responsibility. In many ways, this is wonderful, allowing them a full and free childhood. However, gradually teaching and developing small degrees of responsibility help a child to feel respected and grow in confidence. Don’t be afraid of giving them a regular household task to perform or be responsible for feeding the goldfish! Obviously, responsibilities need to be matched to the age, ability and maturity of each child, but this can develop gradually and sensitively.
IS IT TIME TO SAY NO?
A DEGREE OF NORMALITY IS RETURNING TO CLASSROOMS
Giving children choices is fine and, indeed, often appropriate, but give yourself permission to accept that you are the parent and the adult and, sometimes, your decision or choice is better; you have considered the options and weighed up the alternatives as a mature person who loves their child unconditionally. If you think that it is better for your child, then have the
“This year should hold the excitement of field trips and residential visits” confidence to go with your considered view as parents. It’s not easy, particularly through the teenage years, but I was glad to hear one of my daughters, aged 15 at the time, respond: “I don’t agree with you, but I respect your decision.” Quite a landmark that’s etched on my brain.
IS IT TIME TO HAVE MORE FUN? Too often as parents, or just as adults, we are focussed on what is best, how we can improve things, worrying about our child’s education and all the other bits that come with having children – and forget, at times, about the fun we have with our children. As they get older, those times become ever more precious. Our daughters are all in their 20s now and the family times that we share are the best moments that anyone could wish for. Enjoy the journey as well as the destination and here’s to a happy and fulfilling 2022.

here is little doubt that past lockdown periods have had a detrimental impact on children’s physical wellbeing throughout the pandemic. The knock-on effects of limited physical activity are shockingly broad: children have been denied the social opportunities that come with sport and the development of many fine motor skills. They have faced setbacks in their progression as sportspeople and, perhaps most importantly, they have lost the balance in their curriculum which helps them to develop as well-rounded human beings, not simply academic machines.
the likelihood of distraction, and they can even improve the quality of handwriting. The greatest barrier to success and reaching potential is anxiety. With rising numbers of children struggling with post-pandemic anxiety, training them to control the controllable, to focus on the need to achieve rather than avoid failure, is a powerful tool. As schools we need to be shaping sporting life success and using transferable skills such as mental rehearsal, crocodile breathing and visualisation to take control of a situation. Techniques like these can help to develop self-belief and the ‘can do’ attitude required in a growth mindset. Children who shy away from sport often fear failure. Teenagers, in particular, tend to distance themselves from the
limelight, and the sports pitch can be an exposing place for young people because it emphasises difference in a physical way. Body image often plays a role in this lack of participation, even though ironically, sport can be just the tonic for these inhibitions. A well-structured sports development programme can help to build skills and boost self-esteem gradually, showing pupils what they are capable of while broadening their horizons. Increasing core strength also improves basic posture and changing the body language of a pupil can really help to change their mindset and sense of selfworth. A growth mindset, one that can be applied across all subjects and in all areas of personal development, is best fostered in the mind of a young person who sees what
A well-structured sports development programme can help to build skills and boost self-esteem Virtual calls can do a tremendous job of replicating a classroom discussion about Richard III, albeit with some of the human warmth of interaction muted. However, physical skills and abilities are the most difficult elements of a child’s education to replicate online. As we recover from the effects of the pandemic, prioritising children’s engagement in sport must be an absolute priority in nurturing healthy and happy young people. Going back to basic fundamental movement patterns is essential for children in reaching their potential in school, as these can free up valuable energy resources to enable greater concentration in class. These movements reduce fidgeting and

their body can do, and how it can perform. This in turn, can be very rewarding. Gone are the days of narrow-minded, gender-biased sporting curriculums. More and more schools are broadening their curriculum to include sports like triathlons, rock climbing, abseiling, water polo, and even skateboarding and Taekwondo. Author Sally Gardner has won multiple awards and sold over two million books – and she also couldn't read until she was 14 By LIBBY NORMAN
S
ally Gardner is a Carnegie and Costa-prize winning author with an army of admiring readers. Yet it took her 14 years to finally decipher those mixed and muddled letters on the page and start reading. The first book she read, Wuthering Heights, set her off on a course to a rich creative and writing career. Today, she can still recall the moment words on a page made sense. She describes how she was in a Nissen hut with the other 'maladjusted' girls round her. It was chaos, several girls were visibly distressed and the rain was driving down on the roof, making
noise levels unbearable. "I just didn't want to be there," she says. "I remember looking down and seeing this book, The Complete Works of Emily Bronte. I picked it up and started Wuthering Heights. I started reading it, word by word, with my finger on the words, and suddenly there was total quiet. It was snowing and I was walking with this man trying to find a room for the night. I knew what was happening and I was in the world." Being in the creative world never stopped from that point on. Gardner had been promised by her mother that if she managed five O levels she could go to art school. Despite all dire predictions from teachers, she did it and studied at Central
Saint Martin's. She graduated with a First, then became a theatre designer in Newcastle. She had achieved success, but still – in the background – she was different. "If anyone had asked me then to describe what dyslexia was, what it felt like, I'd have said 'it's an old tin can that follows me round'," she says. She recalls the moment she confessed her problem to a work colleague – he was baffled by paperwork she was sending him – and he told her she simply had to tell people. That was the moment she decided she had to take control – pick up that tin can and own it. Gardner does, it must be said, have an extraordinarily vivid way of describing dyslexia. She is widely A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

on record as comparing it to a Rubik's Cube, saying: "It takes time to work out how to deal with it, but once you do, it can be the most wonderful gift." If Newcastle was her picking up the tin can moment, Gardner found her Rubik's Cube – her wonderful gift – the day that her contract for her first novel came back. She had written The Little Nut Tree from the perspective of an illustrator and when the contract arrived it described her as 'author'. She says: "I just couldn't believe it." Success built from this, with a critical moment when she was taken under the wing of the "wonderful" editor Judith Elliott. She says that when she told Elliott she had terrible dyslexia the editor shot back: "You're a writer, what does that matter?" It was Elliott who encouraged her writing talent, but the feeling she wasn't a proper writer didn't entirely go away. When people discovered she was a writer
“It takes time to work out how to deal with dyslexia, but it can be a gift” with dyslexia they would even question how this could be. "I used to be asked: 'So how do you write?'. I'd tell them I wrote on a laptop. They would respond: 'So, you have a ghost writer then?' Only after Maggot Moon did all of it stop and everyone talked instead about my writing." They certainly did talk about the writing. This wasn't Gardner's first major gong, but for Maggot Moon she was awarded both the Carnegie Medal and Costa Prize – and for a book Gardner had started and then stuck in a drawer. In her new role as Ambassador for the British Dyslexia Association, Gardner intends to be active on a whole range of issues to do with the rights of readers, and the way the 90 per cent treat the other ten per cent. Gardner would like us to stop talking about dyslexia as a disability and start to see what dyslexia can be – how people with dyslexia can be creative, highly visual and solve problems 'left brainers' struggle with. "What we are great at doing is thinking out
of the box. People with dyslexia navigate the world differently because they are forced to. A brick wall is never a brick wall, it's just: how do I get through that brick wall?" Her advice to parents of children who are reluctant readers or have dyslexia is to be patient and to get them into listening books. "I've done most of my reading through my ears. I think I still do," she says. Her other advice is not to raise hell over tidying messy bedrooms. Almost Tindim-like, Sally Gardner says she was a child who had a perpetual struggle seeing the chaos around her – however upset her mother got. "Still, if I get things in a real muddle I can't visually see it. I need someone calm to help me organise!" she adds. THE DARKER REALITY OF CLIMATE EDUCATION
CLIMATE ANXIETY
Rose Hardy, Headmistress of Habs Girls in Elstree, considers how we help young people to navigate their fears and anxieties about climate change – and respond positively ourselves
E
ven a child who doesn’t watch or read the news cannot fail to be aware of the climate change that is happening all over the planet. Our children are global citizens and observers of the modern world. From the earliest days we have taught children about the weather, about the impact of the natural world, storms, fire and floods. Whether it be recent forest fires in Russia and Spain, the extinction of species, recycling campaigns, sustainability or the impact of what we eat,
climate change information is all around us and children are all-consumed by it. Over the last few years children have been exposed to young climate activists such as Greta Thunberg, student strikes, Extinction Rebellion and multiple protests, so climate change is very accessible to young people today. Over the last decade or so, the environmental agenda has become a curriculum staple in our schools, and rightly so. We are educating the future generations of society and it is important that they are aware of the potential challenges our planet faces as a result of how we live.
Most schools are openly playing up climate action, with eco councils and eco prefects becoming the norm within school communities. Yet over-consumption of the environmental agenda also brings with it a darker reality. Climate anxiety is growing amongst children and there is a palpable sense of apprehension, burden and fears about the future. In some cases, there are even deeper feelings of hopelessness and despair. In a similar way that politicians and the media during the 1980s fuelled children’s fears with the prospect of nuclear oblivion, the same sense of panic and fear around individual safety that stems from predictions of a future of uncertainty and destruction are consuming many young people’s minds today. The question is, how can we retain the importance of climate change without resorting to fear, scaremongering and negativity? Climate education needs to be inspiring; it needs to challenge. As schools, we need to look to channel anxieties into actions that are both empowering and encouraging. At a recent school freshers' fair, it was striking to witness just how many young students were signing up for environmental clubs and campaigns focused on climate change. There is a big appetite out there for creating a better, safer world – as educators, we need to capitalise on that positivity. Sadly, there are enough mental health issues within our younger generations today and feeding a culture of nihilism could lead to destructive behaviours that manifest in many negative ways.

EDUCATION • PATHWAYS
CLIMATE CHANGE NEWS IS ALL AROUND US
"There is a palpable sense of apprehension, burden and fears about the future – in some cases, hopelessness and despair" ‘WHAT IS THE POINT IF THE ICE CAPS ARE MELTING?’
The ‘extreme’ environment approach usually leads to conclusions that if the damage is done then there is no point in trying. It is concerning to learn that some young people are so affected by climate change that they are even questioning the feasibility or the security of having their own children in the future. After all, they reason, why bring a new human being into a world that has such a bleak future? Again, this comes back to how we communicate the impact of climate change to our children. We must continue to push the importance of making changes to the way we live and consume, but in a way that is supportive, invigorating and useful. Most schools are already looking at ways to strengthen climate education within the PSHE curriculum to ensure that we are inspiring rather than reeling off statistics. There is a post-Covid curriculum agenda here too, one that uses the last 18 months to educate children on important topics such as: What is a sustainable way to spend money? How can we live more sustainably at university? What credit options should we avoid or consider and how can we create financial security and wellbeing in the future?
ALTERNATIVES TO TALK OF IMPENDING DOOM
Inspirational speakers in school can be very useful too, sharing experiences of those who have made a difference and are focused on giving back rather than on impending doom. We also need to consider the age group we are educating. For younger children, fears are more related to things they can readily grasp such as physical safety or animal extinction. For older children and teens, the focus might be more on how the world will be impacted by the global movement of the population, for instance.
For parents, it is important not to brush off the impact of climate change. We grew up in a different generation, but we must acknowledge the current generation's worries and reassure our children about the future. This means taking the whole agenda seriously – whether that is your child going vegan to support the environment, buying secondhand fashion or taking part in a local community recycling project. Our children will hopefully be the last generation to suffer such climate anxiety, but these things matter. As with so many issues, to fully understand and participate in meaningful conversations with the young, we must continually re-educate ourselves too.

hough a holiday north of the Arctic Circle offers an array of incredible experiences, chances are that one of your main reasons for visiting is to tick the Northern Lights off your bucket list. The Aurora Zone offers many ways to search for the Northern Lights, from night-time snowmobile safaris and husky sledding, to reindeer sleigh rides and cross-country skiing. However, one of their favourite trends is the innovation of Aurora accommodation, which allow you to gaze up at the inky night sky and watch the Northern Lights shimmering dance from the comfort of your bed or sofa. From experiencing one unforgettable night in this specialist accommodation to spending each night of your holiday searching the skies as you are tucked up in bed, The Aurora Zone has an array of memorable, creative and luxurious rooms with the ultimate view.

ocated in the north east of Finnish Lapland, Saariselkä Northern Lights Village was custom built to offer guests the opportunity to see the Aurora from the comfort of their bed. Here there are 80 Aurora Cabins, each of which has a north-facing, tepeeshaped glass roof (with heated glass ensuring that snowfall won’t obstruct your all-important view) underneath which you can lie back in bed and gaze directly into the night sky. Similarly, around 6km from the centre of Levi and set in its own piece of wilderness, Levi Northern Lights Village offers 40 Aurora Cabins.

he Aurora Domes at Torassieppi in Finland are a truly remarkable purpose-built glamping design. Effectively large yurt-like structures, they have been adapted to their Arctic surroundings and provide guests with an ideal view of nature’s greatest light show. Echoing a traditional igloo design with their circular shape, each has a double bed and small seating area overlooking a transparent wall through which the night sky can be viewed. Each has a wood burning stove that is further complemented by soft lighting, reindeer skins and blankets ensuring a beautifully cosy retreat. Similar in design (and new for 2020) are the Wilderness Camp Tamok Aurora Domes in Norway, set deep in the Norwegian wilderness and surrounded by mountains and valleys. These domes provide the perfect setting to escape the light pollution of the city and search the dark skies for the Northern Lights.

The beautiful design is based on a Komsio (a traditional Sámi cradle) and gives a nod to its natural surroundings with traditional Sámi furnishings. Featuring two tiers, the boutique cabin offers both privacy and a high vantage point for seeking Aurorafilled skies. The top-floor-bedroom has 360°-degree views via its glass ceiling and windows, and at night you have an ideal view of the sky and any potential Northern Lights displays.

he perfect option for those looking for an extra special upgrade, the Arctic Bath Hotel in Sweden is a true reflection of the innovative design that the country is so well known for. Part wellness hotel, part architectural wonder, it is designed to float on the stunning Lule River during the summer and freeze in place throughout the winter.

From one of their land cabins amongst the trees, you will have the advantage of a huge glass wall offering views of the sky and idyllic snow-topped scenery. At night, of course, this window offers you the ability to look directly out into the sky, keeping an eye out for Northern Lights displays (you may have to leave your bed to see the sky in full, but you can still keep cosy inside the cabin).
Arctic Fox Igloos
G
oing one step further, the stunningly designed Arctic Fox Igloos on the shores of the lake Ranuanjärvi offer panoramic glass walls, giving you an incredible, unobstructed view of both the surrounding wilderness and the Arctic sky. Heated panels prevent the windows from frosting over or being covered with snow and each has a private sauna for some relaxing escapism from the Arctic cold.

There’s certainly some exceptional food to be eaten here. Downstairs Il Pampero has a traditional Italian menu complemented with an impressive wine list and even more irresistible signature cocktails. And it’s where we also tucked into our delectable breakfast selection snuggled into one of the window alcoves. When we are shown to our room, we discover the true meaning of Hari heaven. Our Studio King Suite was the epitome of elegance and comfort – so much so we really didn’t want to leave. King size beds with softest of luxury linen and sumptuous bespoke furniture in luxuriant velvets and regal berry shades. And the bathroom of dreams – created from stunning white Arabescato marble with a huge walk-in rainforest shower, the deepest of baths set in a bay window overlooking the square, the plushest of towels and lovely Noble Isle bath products. When the sun streamed in through that window in the morning, it really did feel like we were
living in some kind of dream. As you’d expect there is also every facility at hand. The latest technology is on tap including a ginormous 46-inch television with myriad satellite channels, high-speed wifi, docking stations and bedside USB charging ports. Our stay was made all the more memorable by the superlative service. General manager Andrew Coney has imbued his staff with an ethos of the highest standard of courtesy and efficiency in every part of the hotel. I’ve never experienced such a warm welcome, so many smiling faces or such well-informed staff. Nothing is too much trouble and we felt like no request would be too big – probably because it really wouldn’t be. That’s what happens when you check into a little slice of heaven. R
ecently, Rightmove released the findings of their annual Happy at Home Index for 2021, which announced the happiest place to live in Great Britain. But it wasn’t the list of towns that caught our eye, more the findings in their research. Now in its tenth year, the Happy at Home Index asked over 21,000 people across Great Britain about their feelings on where they live and to rank ‘Happiness Measures’. This has been a record-breaking year for house moves. At Trend & Thomas we have been continually surprised by the demand for properties and not just from people living locally. In fact, Rightmove predict by the end of this year 1.5 million transactions will have taken place. But what the Happy at Home Index discovered is that of those people that have moved within the last 12 months, two-thirds have moved to a different area and are happier as a result. Tim Bannister, Rightmove’s director of property data, comments: “It’s been an incredibly busy year in the housing market, with a lot of people deciding that now is the right time to move. It is fascinating to see that people who moved in the last 12 months were more likely to be happy in their areas than those who did not.”
“PEOPLE WHO MOVED IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS WERE MORE LIKELY TO BE HAPPY”
CLEARLY HAPPY AT HOME
The top voted for ‘Happiness Measure’ within the Index was a sense of belonging, and it is this that home buyers really need to tap into when looking for a new home. It doesn’t matter what kind of property you have, if it is your dream home or not, if it isn’t in the right location will it really fulfil your needs and bring you complete happiness? It can be as simple as a stranger saying good morning to you as you walk down the street, or a quick chat with the manager of your local coffee shop. The enjoyment you get from being able to access green spaces easily and having people you know and love close by. Joe Freeth, sales manager here at Trend & Thomas, suggests: “Buyers often start their search with a wish list completely focused on the property itself and maybe not giving much thought to what it will be like to actually live there. We know that buyers in Rickmansworth who have thought first about where they want
to live due to the lifestyle it provides, often have a happier and more successful move.” If you are looking for a new home in 2022, make sure it provides you with a sense of belonging, a place where you would be ‘Happy at Home’. If you would like more advice on the different areas within our pocket of South West Hertfordshire – such as Rickmansworth, Chorleywood, Croxley Green and Sarratt and what they each have to offer – give our team a call today so we can add some magic to your search. Well, it is the season where anything can happen! TREND & THOMAS Belinda-Jane Guilfoyle is a director at Trend & Thomas, 6 Station Road, Rickmansworth, WD3 1QZ. Why should you make a Will? The importance of making a Will cannot be overstated. A Will allows you to: •
Choose the persons you wish to administer your estate
•
Name persons you wish to benefit from your estate
•
Appoint guardians to take parental responsibility for children under 18
•
Express a wish and provide directions for burial and disposal of your body
•
Include tax planning provisions
•
Extend the powers of the Executors where necessary
•
Avoid unnecessary distress to your surviving relatives at a time when they have just suffered a loss
•
Obtain peace of mind that your estate is being distributed according to your wishes
An important consideration is the potential liability to pay Inheritance Tax. Inheritance Tax would not be payable where assets are left to a surviving spouse or civil partner but may be payable when the surviving spouse or civil partner dies. Neves can prepare a Will for you, having regard to your own individual circumstances and wishes and ensure that you have provided for your loved ones in a tax efficient manner. TRIG POINT IN STEVENAGE
SUE FISHER
Q When did you first join Hamptons? A I joined Hamptons nearly eight years
ago when they acquired our specialist new homes business in North London, which still forms part of our growing network. I now head the residential development business in Greater London and Country covering a 90-office network. Q How do you look back on 2021? A It has been an outstanding year for
our business in terms of results and growth. The business units outside of London have benefited by the migration into more rural settings.
Q How would you say the property
market has been performing?
A The market has been performing
exceptionally well and has been

heavily influenced by the changing work/life balances as a result of the pandemic. Many people are now choosing to live in more accessible locations with better value housing. Q Why have you opened a
branch in Hertford?
A We were based in Hertford some while
ago and have a strong client base here. Hertford is a very sought after town, as are its surrounding locations.
Q What will you offer there? A Aside from our specialist New Homes
offering, we have now added Residential Sales and Lettings Teams to offer a full range of services to our clients. Our new office is the first of our business units to deliver our newly branded look and we are thrilled with the results. Situated in the Market Square your readers are welcome to come in any time even just for a chat and a coffee. Q Do you have any stand
out developments? A There have been several outstanding developments this year. Scholars for Chase New Homes in Broxbourne has exceeded sales expectation, as has Trig Point in Stevenage by Chalkdene Developments, and next year we will be launching the magnificent Berkeley Homes site in Hertford on the Canal. Q We are speaking in the run
up to Christmas. What trends are you seeing emerging? A The rental market is very strong, stock levels have been low so when a good rental opportunity comes to market there are a wealth of good tenants for our clients to
“Hertford is a very sought after town, as are its surrounding areas” select. Christmas is always a busy time for us in residential development with buyers keen to move in for the festive season. We look forward to handing over many new properties as the month progresses. Q What are your hopes for 2022? A As a Group our outlook for 2022 is very
positive and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone to our wonderful new offices and to settling back into Hertford.
