LETTER Editor’s

ABSOLUTELY’S July issue highlights

Everything feels so much better in the open air. You know how it is when you head off on your summer hols, sipping on a cocktail at a beachside bar, watching the ripple of the waves. Bliss. But you don't need to hop on a boat or plane to experience that same kind of joy in Hertfordshire. We certainly come up trumps when it comes to outdoor entertainment and July looks like a bumper month for sitting back in the late evening sunshine with a smile on your face.

A big thing that should be on everyone's calendar is the return of the St Albans Comedy Garden. Everyone who is anyone in comedy will descend upon the city for some outdoor laughs. While there, make sure you check out our special on the best food and drink spots in St Albans to make the most of the trip.

Then there's the return of outdoor cinema at The Grove, and also The Luna Cinema comes to Knebworth too. I love watching a movie outdoors, although don't repeat my mistake when watching Back to the Future a few years back. It was boiling and we had to be car bound, so we enjoyed one of the best films ever with the air con on full blast. Cue home time and I had bled the battery dry...

SOUL SISTERS

An unlikely friendship formed over social media during lockdown led to Hertfordshire women Maria Bond and Yulia Blower launching sustainable fashion brand Conscious Citizen

It’s easy to see how Maria Bond and Yulia Blower bonded so quickly over social media during lockdown in 2020. As I begin to chat to the pair, we instantly find common ground – between Maria and I, it’s kids (we both have two) and for Yulia and I, it’s dogs (we both own MiniatureDachshunds). However, the thing that drew these two entrepreneurial women together was a love of fashion, their similar outlook on life and the kind of world they want to live in and leave behind.

“I think, during the lockdown, everyone started to realise exactly how much we consume and question how much of that is actually necessary,” says Maria, who lives in Letchworth with her husband, Matt, and two daughters Myla, 6, and Ruby, 3. “So it sparked the conversation between Yulia and I, initially over social media, of why we have these things, what’s the purpose of them and can we make a di erence to how others consume?”

Maria, 37, and Yulia, 35, found they

also had lots of other things in common. For starters, neither was born in the UK – Maria is originally from Michigan and moved to England in the summer of 2014 after meeting Matt, who is British, while Yulia was born in St Petersburg, but settled in Hitchin with her mother and British step-father when she was seven.

“When I moved here from Russia, I think I was just always trying to fit in with everybody and I was always fascinated with what people wore and if that gave them an air of confidence. I think fashion has quite a big impact, not just on how you perceive other people, but also how you feel yourself. What you wear can really change your mood, it can make you feel more confident and I guess that was something I was always looking for ever since I came to England,” says Yulia, who between the ages of 15 and 21 was a fashion model before working on the editorial teams of magazines including Harper’s Bazaar and In Style, assisting editors on fashion shoots. It

was this experience that led her to move into personal shopping and styling, first working in Harrods and then for Threads Styling. However, she had always wanted a business of her own and during lockdown the opportunity arose. In a bid to suppress her boredom being stuck in her open-plan apartment, Yulia began making beaded bracelets and decided to sell them and donate the proceeds to the Laura Hyde Foundation, a charity which helps medical and emergency services personnel have access to the best mental health support network. After seeing the bracelets on Instagram and seeing Yulia was local, Maria got in touch to order personalised ones for her daughters and the pair instantly hit it o .

“We literally haven’t stopped talking since. We joke that at the beginning it felt a bit like we were online dating!” says Maria, who formerly worked in automotive advertising and medical sales, but after moving to the UK helped set up a sustainable sportswear

brand and also runs Hitchin-based printed and embroideredclothing company, Kustom Clothing, with her husband.

With Yulia’s fashion background and Maria’s business acumen, each woman found in the other the skills they needed to start something new and the pair joined forces to launch sustainable fashion and lifestyle brand, Conscious Citizen.

With the tagline ‘progress not perfection’ the aim of the brand, which produces sustainable capsule items designed to last, is not to punish the modern-day consumer for what they are not doing to be sustainable, but encourageprogress towards a shift in consumer mindset.

“I feel there’s a lot of negativity around the subject of sustainability and there’s a real sense of cancel culture,” explains Yulia. “It feels like, unless you’re doing everything

that encompasses sustainable living, it’s not quite good enough. But that leaves no room for people who are making a small e ort to try to make a di erence or do something better. We wanted to help make sustainable fashion feel more accessible.”

Maria adds: “The common thread is the fact that we both really love learning and helping people and we found a way, a creative way I guess, through Conscious Citizen to do that.”

The business began on Instagram with just a small selection of T-shirts, before o cially launching with a website and their first collection of loungewear sets in December 2020.

“We wanted to create a capsule wardrobe of good quality wardrobe staples that will all mix and match, have longevity in your wardrobe and that people will love to wear

every day,” explains Yulia of the clothing line, which is made in the UK from 100% organic cotton. “But the idea was that we do it one item at a time. We didn’t have funding so the pre-order model works well for us. We launched with a T-shirt and pre-orders allowed us to fund the next item. It’s actually perfectly aligned with what we’re trying to achieve in terms of no waste production and also slowing down that process of fashion because, when you pre-order, there’s a time lapse before you get your item.”

Maria and Yulia have since launched eight production runs including a Mini Citizens line of matching loungewear for children. “We have a really big mum community,” says Maria, whose youngest daughter, Ruby, was just six months old when they launched Conscious Citizen.

“I think they love that our lounge sets are comfortable and can be thrown on with little thought required, yet they still look put together. But more than that, it’s about reframing how we educate our kids. If they understand what quality clothing is, that’s going to carry them through their life.”

Their latest line, The Basics, is a selection of slim-fit T-shirts and leggings and they have also just introduced two new colours to their existing loungewear palette, which they shot the promo photography for at their favourite Hitchin hangout, Hermitage Rd.

“The new colours are co ee and sunshine, so it was fitting to do the shoot in a local co ee bar and the team are so nice at Hermitage,” says Yulia.

“It’s also a life changing place for parents,” adds Maria. “They’re kid and dog friendly so Yulia and I spend a lot of time there!”

Conscious Citizen is stocked in The Yoga Shed, Hitchin, and at consciouscitizenworld.com

Get to know… MARK WATTS

CO-FOUNDER OF TODD IN THE HOLE FESTIVAL

Back in 2019, a new festival caught the attention of festival-goers in Hertfordshire and beyond. That was the year Todd in the Hole first opened its gates and the festival saw over 9,000 people attend over the course of the weekend, enjoying the likes of Definitely, could be Oasis, The Upbeat Beatles, Absolute Bowie and Ibiza legend Dave Pearce, as well as a pick of the region’s best new talent.

Despite boasting a stacked line-up of great bands, this is much more than your regular music festival, featuring everything from The Great British Elvis O , Tug of War Competition, Chilli Eating Contest, to a fun filled Family Arena. This is unlike any festival you’ve ever been to, and we know it isn’t one you’ll forget in a hurry.

From the talented musicians on their four stages, to the real ale and delicious food brought to you from some of the UK’s best suppliers – this is a festival that will not only feed your soul, but

also show it a darn good time.

Ahead of this year’s festival from 14-16 July, we spoke to co-founder Mark Watts to find out about the origins of Todd in the Hole and what to expect this summer.

Q What originally inspired you to launch Todd in the Hole?

A I planned a big 50th bash in the garden with a mini festival vibe. I’d always wanted to hold a proper festival on our land and the party spurred me on to start planning. I was good friends with David Nye, who

21 ABSOLUTELY magazines
CULTURE • PROFILE

already worked with festivals on the catering side, so the pair of us decided to team up and Todd in the Hole was born.

Q What is your own working background and why did you see the festival as a great next step?

A I come from a farming background so nothing to do with festivals, but always thought we had a lovely piece of land that would make a perfect summer festival site.

Q Did you know at the first festival it was going to be a hit?

A Not at all – we had no preconceptions at all about how popular it would be. It’s really hard work to grow a brand new festival, but every year more and more people get the Todd love and spread the word. Our best advertising is word of mouth.

Q Tell us about the location of the festival?

A In beautiful fields in the heart of Hertfordshire, in between Hitchin and Stevenage.

Q What do you have planned for this year?

A Every year gets bigger and better with new additions to the festival. We’re really excited to welcome Judge Jules to his first Todd in the Hole festival. As always we have amazing tribute acts playing and lots of great upcoming Herts based talent on our other stages.

Q Anything new we can look forward to?

A Wellness in the Woods is a new addition

to Todd and will o er festival goers a lovely space to escape the main festival. There will be family yoga, meditation and mindfulness, gratitude trees, healthy snacks and smoothies, breath workshops and loads more.

Q Do you also live close by?

A I live in Todd’s Green, round the corner from the festival site. I love the fact I can walk out my door and be in the middle of the stunning Hertfordshire countryside.

Q Your festival aside, what other places in Hertfordshire do you love visiting?

A Redcoats Farmhouse, The Brockett Arms and any of the pubs in Ashwell.

Q How do you see the future of Todd in the Hole evolving?

A We love the fact that Todd is all about community and Herts. Most of our bands and suppliers are from the area and we want to make sure the roots of the festival always maintain this. Who knows what we have in store for the future. As long as we can keep putting smiles on the faces of our visitors and they keep coming back it will be happy days.

CITY of CUISINE

Why St Albans has plenty for foodies everywhere to get excited this summer

28 ABSOLUTELY magazines
A TIPI AT THE ELEPHANT & CASTLE

Planning your next foodie getaway? Make sure St Albans is on your list. It’s jam-packed with awardwinning places to eat and drink, from its historic 1,100-year-old weekly St Albans Market, to historic pubs and niche independents tucked away in beautiful old streets and courtyards. Here are eight reasons why you should work up an appetite and tease your tastebuds with a visit to St Albans…

A RICH HISTORY

St Albans has a remarkable history with food and drink. It is said that the Alban Bun, the precursor to the famous Hot Cross Bun, originates in St Albans where Brother Thomas Rocli e, a 14th century Monk at St Albans Abbey, developed an original recipe and would distribute these buns to feed the poor on Good Friday. The original recipe remains a closely guarded secret, which

you can taste for yourself at St Albans Cathedral. Handmade in the Cathedral’s very own Abbot’s Kitchen, the bun is baked to a traditional recipe and follows the older custom of cutting the cross-shape into the unbaked dough with a knife, not piping it on.

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE

With over 100 cafes and restaurants, a visit to St Albans is sure to satisfy every tastebud. Enjoy incredible flavours from around the world with street food stalls on the weekly markets o ering everything from paella to pizza, Brazilian, Peruvian, and more – with plenty of plant-based and gluten-free options available. For a real treat, wander to The Hub on Verulam for wild and wonderful food and epic co ee and cocktails – showing live sport and independent cinema and hosting community events and comedy, it’s a fantastic space that o ers more than great food and has a wonderful community vibe.

PUB HEAVEN

Did you know there are more pubs per square mile in St Albans than anywhere else in the country? ST ALBANS MARKET AND FARMERS MARKETS

The thriving twice-weekly St Albans Market o ers fantastic street food to locals and tourists – but it also supports and nurtures local businesses, acting as a fantastic springboard for their new ventures. pizza business making and selling from a novel bike trailer… and Peddling Pizza was born. Today, he has over 118K followers on Instagram and Adam serves his classic Neapolitan-style pizza with a modern twist in a custom-designed 1972 Chevrolet Van.

Darlish Ice Cream was first served by founder Laura at the St Albans Feastival event and monthly Farmers Markets. After a fantastic response, they opened a shop in French Row in St Albans in 2018. Demand grew for their unique handmade ice cream inspired by Middle Eastern flavours and in 2020, their famed Baklava Sandwich went viral on Tik Tok. They now have stores in St Albans, Covent Garden, Hatfield House, and Spitalfields.

ROOT CAUSE

It has been a busy time in the world of trichology, with some people experiencing an unusually excessive shedding of hair. Over the past few months we have experienced a season of cold weather, with an increase in colds, flu and other viruses. These can all have an impact on your hair growth cycle. Your hair bulbs rely on a constant supply of blood, which are attached to the hair follicles. They lay deep in the dermis and are connected to a network of tiny blood capillaries. These capillaries carry oxygen, minerals and vitamins to the hair and help with the removal of waste and toxins.

When the body's immune system is under attack from foreign bodies, in particular viruses, the blood will carry all the important minerals, vitamins and nutrition to the organs which keep us alive, fit and healthy, and help to aid recovery from the foreign antibodies that are attacking our immune system.

With this in mind you can understand that the hair follicle can be the last organ to receive nutrition from the blood during these times, and eventually as the hair cycle evolves, it can experience a premature resting phase, which involves the hair shedding before it was actually supposed to.

The signs you may notice are excess hair in the brush, plug, shower or bath, your pillow and even when running your fingers through your hair. This experience can be extremely alarming, causing anxiety and stress; however try to keep calm, speak to your hairdresser for support and visit your nearest trichologist.

Early diagnosis is important, as with any medical issues. Avoid wasting time and money on scalp and hair potions and lotions unless you have been prescribed medication from a professional practitioner. Remember we are what we eat, and our hair is a complex chain of amino acids, which are proteins. If you do not eat meat, ensure you are replacing your diet with other food groups high in B12, which is important for healthy hair growth.

Do shampoo your hair daily, using the correct hair cleanser for your scalp and hair type, and always apply a conditioner to the hair. Allow the hair to dry naturally, or put your head upside down and dry with a medium heat, this will create more root lift and volume. Also do continue with your professional hair colour as this will give body and volume to the hair and give you more confidence when looking at yourself in the mirror. Generally if you are shedding an excess amount of hair, the scalp can become greasy and the hair density decreases – by applying conditioner to the scalp you could exacerbate lank hair causing a lack in body and volume and an excess of oil on the scalp. Also do not brush wet hair, this can cause the hair to snap, and damage the hair structure.

Dr Federica Amati PhD’s ‘De-Code

Your Liver Clinic’ with de-liver-ance puts your liver health to the test…

Most people associate cirrhosis of the liver with drinking. So as someone who only has an occasional G&T, I don’t feel very nervous when I’m invited to Dr Federica Amati PhD’s ‘De-Code Your Liver Clinic’.

night's takeaway, I’m suddenly feeling slightly less confident. The FibroScan device uses soundwaves to measure the sti ness of the liver. There’s some light thumping on my side and after a few minutes the nurse tells me that my liver actually looks very healthy.

The first step of the process is a FibroScan and blood test at The Light Centre. As I lie down on the bed, the specialist nurse explains to me that the liver is responsible for 500 vital functions as well as the e ciency and health of our entire system. Everything we put in our body can have an impact on our liver health. As I think back to last

A week later, I’m scheduled in with Dr Amati. It’s good news – my bloods have also indicated that my liver is functioning well. I explain that I follow a plantbased and low sugar diet and she tells me that it’s clearly paid o .

Dr Amati, who has a PhD in clinical medicine, a Masters in Public Health, and is an AfN registered nutritionist, works with patients with a variety of

health concerns – from high blood pressure and cholesterol, to infertility and menopause.

I ask what the next steps would be if my results weren’t so optimal. Dr Amati asks her clients to make a food diary and then she puts together a long term plan for them. This includes a course of de-liver-ance, an antioxidant rich, plant-based elixir that helps to rejuvenate the liver.

The whole experience has been an enlightening one and it will definitely make me more conscious about taking care of my liver health.

SPIRIT

An acclaimed Hertfordshire interior designer takes Absolutely behind the scenes of a unique project of hers

54 ABSOLUTELY magazines

The owners of this property are Christopher and Lynsey Bell. They have three children – Darcey, 13, Piper, 10, and Otis, 5. The property comprises lower ground floor and first floor of a period, four storey property, originally two separate flats that the homeowner combined. The property has exclusive ownership of the gardens. The lower ground floor houses four bedrooms, four bathrooms, gym and laundry/utility room. The first floor consists of TV room, kitchen, dining room and bar, cloakroom and study.

The initial combining of the properties occurred prior to my involvement. However, the homeowner was unhappy with the layout and function following the original renovation and sought our services to assist with a reconfiguration and overhaul of the interiors.

One of the client’s major issues was with the kitchen, which was located in the now TV room. She felt shut away from guests

when entertaining and the space didn’t allow for the open plan and relaxed entertaining that she was keen to provide. The number one priority was therefore to relocate the kitchen to a more prominent position and to develop a kitchen design that blended with the overall aesthetic for the ground floor.

The staircase connecting the two, previously separate apartments was also not to the client’s liking. This was originally positioned along the side wall of the now kitchen and didn’t feel like a formal staircase, more of a basement staircase with no balustrade or grandeur. This was also to be rectified as part of the reconfiguration. An o ce needed to carved out too of the current footprint. The client was very open to ideas and suggestions regarding the aesthetic for the property. They knew that comfort was key to them and to keep an organic feel to the materials used, resulting in the use of natural stones, timbers and relaxed, natural fibres. From our first meeting, we knew that the backdrop would be a warm, neutral palette

with dark timber accents. However, the clients had a sense of fun about their personalities and personal style. We were confident that this would make them open to the use of colour and playfulness if incorporated in the right way.

The kitchen had to provide a high level of function, without feeling too utilitarian. The mix of natural materials was key to achieving something that felt calm and at home at what is essentially the central ground floor space. The marble shelf that runs along the length of the kitchen allowed for decorative features in a practical space and assists with integrating the kitchen with the largely open plan ground floor. The Taj Mahal Quartzite and sawn oak cabinetry evokes a tranquil mood.

The clients are very social and a designated yet relaxed dining area for entertaining was required. The goal was to achieve a grown up space for after dinner parties, but also a room that was equally as useable when the family were not entertaining. The large timber unit allowed for a generous but concealed bar. It also provides a hidden entrance to the cloakroom. It is a stand out piece with so much functionality.

“The clients had a sense of fun about their personalities and personal style”

As the family’s main space to gather of an evening, the living room in particular needed to achieve a maximum level of comfort. We wanted a calming palette with accents of green and natural textures to reflect the gardens visible across the dining space. To maximise use and function we also created a multifunctional seating nook underneath the stained glass windows.

The master bedroom colour palette was dark with earthy accents and contrasts with the lightness of the seating area adjacent. We wanted to design a headboard that stretched the entire wall and really helped to frame the sleeping area. The oversized chaise seat sits at an angle to allow views of the gardens without dancing away from the bedroom.

Each of the children’s bedrooms provide space for them to personalise their rooms, whilst keeping the rooms sophisticated and pleasing to parents too. Seating is also apparent in each bedroom to allow for quiet time when needed.

It was important that each child’s bedroom had a special element and somewhere for them to relax. Bedroom rivalry is not an option! Chevrons and icy blues retained a calmness to a fun and comfortable boy’s space. The hanging chair was on the wish list of Piper and we chose natural cane and furs to keep it soft. We are always keen to mix patterns, shapes and colours in kids' bedrooms to evoke a sense of expression and fun. Keeping the large items, such as the headboard, neutral assists with longevity.

The end result is a social and hardworking layout that serves the needs of the whole family. The colour palette is a base of warm neutrals, grounded with dark timbers and accented with a grown up use of colour.

Our general philosophy as a design practice is to create homes that provide understated and lived in luxury, with a good dose of wow factor. This, and encouraging our clients to have a sense of individuality with their choices, we believe makes for the most successful renovations. This project was no exception.

DESIGN DUO

The Conran Shop and Collagerie have collaborated on a second stylish collection

For the second time, the Conran Shop has teamed up with Collagerie to launch an exclusive capsule collection for the home. The sophomore edit features bolder and more energetic colours and compositions across various products, including kitchenware, cushions, rugs, tote bags, and the new addition of lighting. The close work between The Conran Shop’s design team and Collagerie co-founders Lucinda Chambers and Serena Hood has brought each piece to life.

The collection’s ink-bled ‘sketch-a-check’ theme is inspired by vintage watercolour prints and slip trail pottery. Each capsule piece is unique due to natural and recycled materials, handcrafting, and hand-painting techniques. The trays are shaped by hand in Sweden from responsibly sourced birch veneer, the lampshades feature rolled edges and taping, which have been completed by hand, and the hanging mobiles are made in collaboration with the world-famous Volta, assembled in Spain from salvaged materials.

As Fashion Director of British Vogue for 25 years, Chambers has extensive experience directing some of fashion’s most memorable shoots. She has also worked as a creative consultant and stylist across high street and luxury brands, from Prada to H&M. Simultaneously, Hood, as former Executive Fashion Director of British Vogue, has written countless style edits and created unforgettable events

TAKE FIVE

Industry insiders share the five hottest wellness trends for expecting mamas and new mums this summer

70 ABSOLUTELY magazines

Ear Seeds

Ear seeds are extremely helpful at supporting postpartum symptoms including anxiety, headaches, fatigue, and insomnia – and as they are 100% natural they are the perfect remedy for new mums. At first glance they look like jewellery, but there’s a lot to them! These little golden ear seeds are already a real trend in the capitals of the world, and also here at Escapada. At our TCM practices, we firmly believe that we can activate our body and mind to find inner balance and feel good. Ear Acupuncture and Ear Seeds o er the perfect solution for gentle, natural support on-the-go. The Ear Seed method is based on the teachings of acupressure, which is part of Chinese medicine. Small gold-plated beads are placed on specific acupuncture points in the ear using a transparent patch and remain there until they fall out. It is based on the assumption that our life energy Qi can be brought back into flow by applying pressure to specific points with the aim of releasing energetic blockages in the body and achieving inner balance. My only advice? Ask your acupuncturist to put the ear seeds in to ensure that they are on the correct acupoints – for mothers ear seeds are 100% safe, but if you are pregnant there are certain points that can bring on early labour so must be avoided.

Palo Santo

There’s been a huge increase in sales already for Palo Santo and I definitely think this will follow through as one of the biggest wellness trends of 2023, which is why our Palo Santo Oil Perfume from Rahua is going to be a hero product for all mums! It’s an amazing therapeutic perfume with so many aromatherapy properties. Helping elevate the mood of the user, Palo Santo contains terpenes which are the biosynthesis messengers of the medicinal plants and oils we used when creating this fantastic perfume. The combination of plant based ingredients gives the user an instantaneous mood lift, like many other perfumes do, but in this case Rahua Palo Santo Perfume is completely made without the usage of synthetic chemicals that may become a health hazard in the long run, and want to be avoided when you are a new mum! Indigenous women in the Americas have been using Palo Santo during pregnancy for

centuries in a very successful way. They’ve been using it as a tea, for anti-anxiety, in a therapeutic way, amongst other ways. However, due to the essential oil content some people may be allergic to it. So it is best to test before use and use precautions when pregnant. Personally, I’m pregnant now and I have used it throughout my pregnancy and it brings uplifting moments and it’s great for centering and meditation.

Postpartum Care Golden Month Acupuncture

Postpartum care is often a neglected area of care during pregnancy, but here at Escapada we believe it’s the most important. ‘Golden Month’ is the Chinese name for these special weeks following childbirth, because it’s believed that many chronic diseases can be cured if the mother is looked after properly in her Golden Month. At Escapada we o er acupuncture, herbal tonics, and health plans that will support mothers before, during and most crucially after childbirth. As the western world starts to shift focus on how important postpartum care is, we think there’s going to be an increase in natural, safe and alternative medicine solutions available to mums.

• Mother Warming: Mother Warming is a gorgeous ritual performed by a trained acupuncturist ideally 10 days after labour. It can help the new mother have more energy and feel rejuvenated and is a great way to gently aid recovery from childbirth and restore energy. It involves gently warming the acupuncture meridians that run through the lower back and abdomen to gently warm the uterus after opening, nourish blood, and move energy. It utilises a Moxa stick to warm acupuncture points for 5–10 minutes until they feel pleasantly warm. It is deeply nourishing to the area.

• Acupuncture: Postpartum acupuncture is a wonderful way to gently treat a woman’s body back into balance. An acupuncturist will focus on hormonal rebalancing techniques and any other symptoms that have come up like anxiety, digestive complaints, skin issues etc.

Herbal Medicine & Tonics

There was a huge rise in supplements in 2022 and we foresee herbal medicine and tonics becoming a big wellness trend over this year too. Individualised TCM herbal tonics are an amazing supplement for mothers to take and nourish them back to full health, rebalancing blood and Qi. Herbal medicine is a wonderful way to support your body as your herbalist can combine herbs to make formulas and tonics specific to your individual needs. For example, formulas can be created to nourish your blood in combination with herbs to improve circulation, which is vital for hormonal and sexual health. For women, herbs that help to regulate the menstrual cycle and support healthy female reproductive function include White Peony Root and Dong Quai. Tao Hong Si Wu Tang is a popular blood nourishing formula and great for postpartum mums. They are often taken with female reproductive tonics traditionally used to tone and preserve the Yin (such as Rehmannia, Chinese Licorice and Ginger) and promote the flow of Qi (energy) and blood to the ovaries, uterus and pelvis (such as Tangkuei and Chinese

Angelica Root). Further more, Chinese medicine has a long tradition of using safe, gentle aphrodisiacs and may be all you need to naturally get your sex life back on track (if you are ready for that and need a little helping hand), postpartum when you are healed.

Sleep Dohars

(for expecting mums, new mums and babies)

Sleep was one of the biggest wellness trends of 2022, and it’s going to be even bigger in 2023 as we start focusing on self care and wellness. One struggle of being pregnant, and even postpartum is lack of sleep, which is why I know the Sleep Dohar is going to be a huge trend this year (and is already on the rise) – especially as your travel essential! Comparable to a top sheet, and virtually unknown in Europe, Dohars are temperature controlling ‘supercharged’ blankets that were originally used by the Maharajahs during the monsoon season and hottest nights of the year to keep them cool. The Dohar design comprises three layers of superior quality, super soft, finely woven ‘Mul Mul’ cotton that are not only

breathable, but regulate your body temperature as the layers of voile cotton trap cool air, acting as a lightweight coverlet which are still weighty enough to keep you cosy and comfy that can be layered throughout winter and spring. They are perfect when you are pregnant and struggle to get comfortable with a weighty duvet, and even better postpartum when you have those mid-morning naps with your sleeping baby, and especially when travelling! We also o er beautiful baby Dohars that can be used whilst travelling, for swaddling and in the pram – all temperature controlling and lightweight!

GOOD SPORTS

How the Pre-Prep Sports Activity Day at Berkhamsted School was the perfect showcase to show children the benefits of physical exercise

76
ABSOLUTELY magazines

Berkhamsted School’s Pre-Prep School recently enjoyed their Sports Activity Day, an annual event that is not only great fun for the children, but also highlights the importance of physical activity and physical literacy in the early years. It was a brilliant opportunity for the Pre-Prep children to enjoy a range of fun physical activities and take part in some gentle competition, all with their parents and teachers cheering them on and with the May sunshine finally showing itself.

The afternoon included a parade, songs and a carousel of fun activities for the children, including everything from obstacle courses, hockey and lacrosse dribbles, and a house relay race. The activities were especially structured for the di erent age groups, with Years 1 and 2 taking on more challenging tasks than their peers in the Stepping Stones (the school’s nursery) and Reception.

Throughout the whole morning, and across both year groups, the children’s willingness to try their hardest, to be

enthusiastic and to support each other was obvious. The morning also showed the progression of the children’s physical skills over the course of their time at Pre-Prep, and highlighted the benefits of physical activity, physical literacy, and the Pre-Prep’s Motor Movers programme.

Physical activity at school is important because it helps to improve children’s overall health and fitness, and aids their mental health and cognitive development, meaning children are more likely to concentrate and maintain focus in lessons. Physical activity sits alongside physical literacy as an important part of life at Berkhamsted Pre-Prep. Focus is placed on giving children the motivation to want to take part in physical activity, understand how they can access it, and to build confidence in the children to want to give things a go. In addition to events like the Sports Activity Day, children in Years 1 and 2 benefit from a varied PE curriculum, engaging in activities ranging from gymnastics and ball skills to invasion games and dance. All children in Years 1 and 2 also swim weekly throughout the school year and have weekly tennis lessons promoting hand-eye coordination – key to core development in other curricular areas. Meanwhile, Stepping Stones and Reception have been benefiting from the Motor Movers programme, which was introduced in September 2021

and is run by Physical Education teacher, Ceri Cave. Underpinned by the findings of Loughborough University’s Movement for Learning Project, the Motor Movers programme means that the children in Early Years Foundation Stage (Stepping Stones and Reception) enjoy a fun 20 minute movement session with Ceri each day.

The children follow a coherent schedule of movement-based songs, rhymes and stories designed to help provide a broad base of movement fundamentals and build up strength in the core muscles, handeye coordination, and balance, all while building confidence and having fun.

The first cohort to have started this programme are now coming to the end of their six terms. It has been very successful, with all children making great progress and laying firm foundations for their on-going PE journey at school.

These programmes, as well as events like the Sports Activity Day, really highlight the benefits of physical activity and physical literacy for children. They also show how children at Berkhamsted Pre-Prep are being equipped with the foundations and skills that will hopefully result in a lifetime of engagement in physical activity.

HIGH CLIMBERS

The Director of Sports at St Margaret’s School in Hertfordshire writes about the many benefits of mountain biking in school sports

There are few feelings greater than the sense of freedom and connectedness that comes from riding a bike in the open air.

When you are in a state of flow, it can feel almost like time has slowed down, boosting your sense of wellbeing and allowing your mind to wander – it’s probably what

keeps us pedalling time and time again. Likewise, the benefits that can come from mountain biking, in particular, can provide pupils with an opportunity to experience new problem-solving challenges. Cycling helps young people to build confidence by engaging in a new physical activity – but one that is outside of the more traditional school sports such as hockey, lacrosse, netball, football and rugby. Not all children enjoy team challenges

or the social interactions that are usually associated with the more traditional team sports. In fact, it is often the case that children who don’t naturally veer towards team sports will find themselves feeling anxious in that type of learning environment. Mountain biking gives pupils similar physical and emotional challenges to traditional sports, but allows their personal growth to be explored in a setting where they will feel less pressurised by their peers to perform in a group or ‘team’ scenario.

ESCAPING PRESSURE

Of course, the health benefits of regular exercise are numerous, but mountain biking assists by helping children to develop improved posture, a healthier heart spurred by a full body workout, and much less strain physically on joints. There is also the boost in mood and mental wellbeing that comes from cycling, being in the great outdoors, breathing in fresh air and escaping the weight of the pressure of adolescence. Not only does getting out on your bike

79 ABSOLUTELY magazines
EDUCATION • TALKING HEAD
“Mountain biking can provide pupils new problem-solving challenges”
DAN PAYNE-COOK

aid fitness levels, toning and weight loss, but it is also proven to improve your quality of sleep – something that is hugely important for young people with busy lives. Although mountain biking is not o cially part of the UK PE curriculum, it is part of the optional sports enrichment programme at our school, and we hold a dedicated cycling lesson every week for our pupils. This programme is also available via our cocurricular clubs, and it is something we are keen to push as a valid and important sport.

Aside from endurance, stamina and an increased sense of freedom, children will learn various new skills from riding a mountain bike. The building of a jump for one. But it is not all about the tricks, learning bike balance control skills and matching di erent gear changes to di erent terrains is equally significant. Pupils get the opportunity to strengthen their cardiovascular fitness levels, learn balance and cultivate muscular endurance. Equally important to this is the development of

resilience as pupils learn to push themselves outside of their comfort zones and grow in confidence as they achieve new levels of competence in the saddle, remodelling those self-made performance limiters.

RISK AND REWARD

As with any sporting activity there is an element of risk, and so risk-taking goes hand in hand with sports like mountain biking. Health and safety is of the utmost importance, and this is why all teachers that lead a cycling session must have undertaken the necessary qualifications to ensure they conduct lessons in a positive

and safe learning environment. Likewise, the excellent maintenance of cycle trails and grounds is also important for delivering safe sessions. Bikes should always be checked prior to any lessons in school and should be personalised to the individual pupil riding them. Once helmets and weatherappropriate clothing are in place, and bikes have passed any safety checks, each pupil should be assessed on their level of competence before moving onto any skills activities, physical challenges or time trials.

It would be wonderful for sports like mountain biking to become more integrated into the wider curriculum for physical education, but realistically, take up will be dependent on the aims and localised demands of schools. Other limitations for such sports in school are, of course, the initial high outlay of costs to set up the programme – namely the purchase of mountain bikes, helmets, repair kits and other equipment, all of which can vary in price. Having a supportive Head that is keen to develop a broader physical activity programme in school is of course a good start.

Sport should be accessible to everyone, so developing wider opportunities for future physical education in school is important as we seek to provide a well-rounded and more inclusive education across the board; one that will both inspire and nurture pupils’ physical, emotional and social wellbeing and allow them to participate in sports that they are ultimately passionate about.

Ashridge House

For the first time the stunning gardens at Ashridge House will play host to a sculpture exhibition showcasing the work of 15 renowned and emerging sculptors

Running from 31 July-24 September 2023, The Sculpture Garden at Ashridge House is a celebration of contemporary and traditional art featuring internationally acclaimed artists such as Diane Maclean, Giles Penny and Jenny Pickford. Set within 190 acres of Grade II* registered grounds that incorporate formal gardens and fairy-tale woodland, the exhibition is an opportunity to go on a journey of discovery.

From sculptures that nestle humbly into their natural environment to bold pieces that juxtapose the summer scenery, the exhibition explores the natural world and our place within it. The rich heritage of Ashridge House, from its historic garden designers to its humanitarian uses, are reflected by the sculptures in the exhibition.

In addition, this summer the public will be able to enjoy expert tours of the gardens designed by celebrated landscape gardener Humphry Repton. Originally designed by acclaimed landscape gardener in 1813 for the Earl and Countess of Bridgewater, the formal gardens remain intact today as the finest surviving example of Repton’s work and are often referred to as his ‘Garden of Gardens’. The hidden jewel of Hertfordshire’s country estates, this is the first time the Ashridge House gardens have been open daily to the public.

Tours will be led by Ashridge House’s expert gardens team and will take visitors on an informative and colourful journey through the gardens’ rich heritage and history and sumptuous views. The gardens today include Italian gardens, the rosary and fernery, herb gardens, Lady Bridgewater’s flower garden and Monk’s Garden, which features an

armorial design representing the four families who have been associated with Ashridge House. Other distinctive features of the gardens include Lady Marion Alford’s skating pond and moat, now intentionally left dry, and a re-creation of Repton’s planned arbour.

Zora Tyrone, head gardener at Ashridge House, says: “The historic gardens at Ashridge are beautiful and varied, and managed with biodiversity and sustainability at the core of what we do. The gardens’ team are keen to share their knowledge, expertise and how to achieve year-round interest, with visitors during garden tours this summer.”
