uly is often a time when the summer festival truly comes back into its own (with a nod to Glastonbury in June, of course). However, this month there's a very special festival coming to the area that means a great deal more than warm beer, unseasonal rain and lengthy queues for the portaloos. When news filtered through about the death of Caroline Flack on 15 February, 2020, I was stunned. It had a strange impact on me – I hardly watched anything she presented, but was well aware of her and also of her talent in her field, and I felt devastated. I can't explain it, I just did, and I pored over news about her in the days that followed. It's why, when I first heard about Flackstock, due to be held at Englefield House on 25 July, it went straight to the top of my features in-tray. It's a celebration of everything about Caroline Flack, from music to the spoken word, and her dear friend and one of the festival organisers, Natalie Pinkham, tells us in this issue why they wanted to stage it. It's in aid of several mental health charities, too, so if you haven't done so already, make sure you buy a ticket.

F O R G OT T E N Natalie Pinkham explains why leaving a positive legacy for Caroline Flack is behind Flackstock, a one day festival celebrating the life of her close friend B y N ATA L I E L I

eeks before the world entered lockdown, a well-loved and popular presenter took her own life. Caroline Flack’s death on 15 February 2020 shocked the nation. As Covid-19 took its hold, there wasn’t a chance for friends and family to process and grieve together, explains close friend, Natalie Pinkham, a Formula One pit lane reporter for Sky Sports F1. “One of the things I found the hardest was processing Caroline’s death and not being with friends to do it because of Covid. It was awful, we went straight into lockdown,” she says. “We wanted to create something for her mum to focus on. The advice I was given when Caroline died is that when the noise calms down the loneliest time can be when you feel your loved one has been forgotten. “I think about Caroline every day and we wanted to show her mum how

much she matters to us and impacted our lives,” Pinkham continues. “Caroline loved dance, music and comedy so this festival felt like the right thing to do.” The festival in question is Flackstock. The celebratory event takes place at Berkshire’s Englefield Estate on 25 July and features appearances from Natalie Imbruglia, Fleur East, Louise Redknapp, Paddy McGuinness, and Noel Fielding. Organising the event alongside Caroline’s best friends Leigh Francis and Dawn O'Porter, Pinkham is pleased that the family festival is almost sold out – the money raised from the festival will be split equally between the charities Choose Love, Mind, Samaritans and the Charlie Waller Trust. “Choose Love was Caroline’s favourite cause, set up by her two best friends,” adds Pinkham. “The other charities are fitting as Caroline’s death and Covid-19 has brought mental health into sharp focus particularly over the last couple of years. A lot of people have struggled and it just feels like the right thing to do, creating a positive legacy

for Caroline. Two years on it’s still a weird feeling to talk about Caroline in the past. “I’ve been blown away by the response, which is no real surprise as she was so popular,” Pinkham says. “Suicide is an incredibly hard thing to come to terms with. I haven’t met anyone who wasn’t in some way affected by Caroline’s passing. “Englefield is a wonderful venue – another venue we had booked pulled out after nine months of planning. I had a good old cry and got up the next day and found a solution. Giles Cooper Entertainment and Live Nation suggested Englefield. It’s such a beautiful venue and you feel such immediate calm there.” Pinkham met Flack in 2005 while working on the same late-night poker show. An immediate connection was formed. “We thought it was hilarious that we were doing this show. We had such a giggle, Caroline was brilliant company and she’d make a seemingly banal evening fun. She saw the humour and fun in the smallest thing. Her laugh was infectious and the tragic irony is A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

that she brought so much laughter and life to us and left this world in the most tragic way.” While Flack went on to become a household name, Pinkham, who went to school in Hertfordshire and grew up in Gayhurst, Buckinghamshire, carved a successful career in sports presenting. Pinkham recalls being taken to nearby Silverstone, home of British motor racing and being blown away by Formula One and Nigel Mansell. Pinkham later became the first woman to commentate on a Formula One session on Sky Sports F1. “I always loved TV and my earliest memories include the 1984 Olympics when Zola Budd fell over – she was my hero. Seeing her fall out of contention was my first life lesson. My dad said life isn’t always fair, you have to get back up and try again. “I loved the idea of sport being broadcast all over the world,” she adds. “It was always my hope to work in TV. It really is the dream, but it’s not straightforward; it can be a real juggle with two young kids. I feel lucky and grateful. Today I have just done the school run, am heading to a shoot in Ascot, and then off I fly to Monaco.” Despite her busy career and home life, Pinkham is intent on getting the fine details of Flackstock in place. In honour of Flack and to raise awareness of mental health, Flackstock Summit necklaces and bracelets have been specially created for the event.

“A friend of my husband climbs mountains and is a conservationist – he has taken imprints of the glaciers at the top of Mount Everest and created a bracelet that symbolises the biggest and physical mental challenge you can face,” explains Pinkham. “You can give one to your best friend, parent or sister. It’s like the ultimate friendship band. Once it’s tied it can’t be broken, it’s made out of climbing cord – it represents the support that we all need to give and receive from others. We are selling this in her memory and all the money will go to the charities involved.” It's another small touching addition to the special day where friends, family and fans will gather to honour an unforgettable star. Pinkham ends by saying: “I think Caroline would have laughed and cried to see us all together – I can hear her little voice now. I think she knew how much we all loved her and this is a tangible collective effort from her friends and family. I hope she is looking down and knows that she was, and is, immensely loved.” heritagelive.net/whats-on/flackstock

FLACKSTOCK IS IN MEMORY OF CAROLINE FLACK

At a glance… Flackstock

Masked Singer winner Natalie Imbruglia, pop sensation Louise Redknapp and Fleur East were the first acts to be announced for Flackstock, taking place in the grounds of Englefield, the Elizabethan House and estate near Pangbourne in Berkshire. There will be celebrity appearances on the day coming from Professor Green, Dermot O’Leary, Keith Lemon, Paddy McGuinness and Joel Dommett. Money raised from Flackstock will be split equally between the charities Choose Love, Mind, Samaritans and Charlie Waller Trust – four worthy outlets that held a special place in Caroline’s heart. Englefield House is a late 16th century house largely rebuilt in the 1850s and sits in its own extensive park. The house and grounds are a popular location for film, TV, and photography.

Q How long have you been Director for at Waddesdon and is it a privilege to work there? A Only just over a month! But I have worked here for 22 years, first as Head of Collections, and then my role expanded. I think the fact that I have been here for so long speaks for itself – there is nowhere else quite like Waddesdon. It encompasses so much and has so many facets – it’s a historic house, a museum, a great garden, and it puts on a wonderful programme of exhibitions and events throughout the year, including our very popular Christmas season. It also has a fantastic schools and education programme, and we have a working Aviary. It’s a lovely day out, and you can also shop, eat, buy and taste extraordinary wine…

Q Are you faced with any challenges right now in the running of Waddesdon? A To some extent, we’re still finding our feet after the pandemic and all the challenges that brought. It’s wonderful to be fully open again, but we’ve had to make lots of adjustments to our ways of working, and, although visitors are definitely happy to be back, the international situation and cost of living increases are both a concern – we’re not sure what impact they might have longer-term, and we’re very aware that we are a property that relies on people driving to get to us. Q When it comes to programming events, what are you looking to offer? A We always try to reflect the uniqueness and the special quality of Waddesdon, and we like to surprise and delight our visitors, so that they feel they have been enriched, whether that’s a family who might have a lovely time exploring the grounds with one A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Q With summer here, any outside spots you particularly like? A Wendover Woods. In bluebell time, of course, but at any time of the year. Wonderful views over the Chilterns, magnificent trees, cool and shady in warm weather, starkly beautiful in winter. PHOTO: PAUL QUEZADA-NEIMAN

Q What can you tell us about the forthcoming Edmund de Waal exhibition? A We first worked with Edmund ten years ago on a series of installations through the Manor, which was very special. He’s a ceramic artist and author, and this new exhibition includes new work and two major pieces which are on their way to the National Library of Israel in Jerusalem, which is under construction at the moment and will open early next year. Edmund’s work often explores the idea of belonging, loss and legacy and how collections and archives bring history alive, so he’s always been fascinated by houses like Waddesdon, which reflect family identity so strongly, and the exhibition is a response to our particular place. It’s been installed high up in the house, in one of the towers, as if it is floating above everything else.

GAINSBOROUGH'S PINK BOY IN CONSERVATION

Q Waddesdon aside, if you had to pick three places you love visiting in Buckinghamshire, where would they be? A Claydon House – I love the mad Rococo 18th-century interiors. Discover Bucks (formerly the Bucks County Museum) – its galleries have just been refurbished, so it’s looking really good, and I love the way it tells local stories. I always come away having learned something new. They do really good contemporary art exhibitions and events too. Turn End House in Haddenham – it’s a beautiful contemporary house and garden, tucked quietly away so you almost have to look for it, but built by a pioneering architect, Peter Aldington, in the 1960s. It’s a calm, thoughtful place and a wonderful example of how cutting edge design can stand the test of time. It feels both timeless and startlingly modern.

Q What else is coming up at Waddesdon over the summer? A Lots! We’ve got a great programme of outdoor theatre and cinema over the summer months, including Shakespeare, theatre for families, and a line-up of brilliant open-air film screenings against the backdrop of the Manor. We’re also the venue for four fantastic music concerts on 2-5 July, starting with the one and only Michael Bublé. We’ve got all sorts of family events and activities over the summer holidays, and for garden enthusiasts, we’re offering guided tours of the private Rothschild walled garden at Eythrope, which is legendary in the horticultural world for it excellence and traditions. There are also wine events and tastings, and in September, we are hosting our annual Chilli Fest, which celebrates all things chilli, with lots of food to try, music, family fun and children’s activities. In the House, you can discover our new exhibition, Alice’s Wonderlands, exploring the life and legacy of Alice de Rothschild for her Centenary, and come face-to-face with Thomas Gainsborough’s The Pink Boy (1782) – one of our most famous portraits, which has been newly cleaned and conserved and forms the centrepiece of a new display.

The oversized crown sits at the junction of Carnaby Street and Ganton Street above the 3D shimmer Union Flag, which is adorned with 30,000 red, white and blue shimmer discs. Other Intagrammable moments include the oversized colourful bulbs, giant plug and Spirit of Soho mural. Alongside this, find a Carnaby photobooth located on the ground floor of Kingly Court to capture those summer memories alongside a water fountain to refresh after a long day's shopping. The fountain helps to encourage visitors to refill bottles and reduce plastic consumption – this

hen it comes to marvelling about Berkshire's towns and cities, Newbury is one that always stands out for us. On the one hand there is the history – such as Donnington Castle and Highclere House – but it has also moved with the times and offers so much for all the family today. Overleaf, we have four pages of where you should spend your time this summer, where you should go and eat, and where you should shop. Enjoy...

Best of all

WORLDS Newbury is the idyllic market town with a big heart that is calling you this summer

O

ld meets new in the historic market town of Newbury, which is rapidly becoming one of the most vibrant and must-visit areas in Berkshire. With specialty markets, an impressive summer programme, and over 100 independent shops, cafés, pubs, and restaurants, Newbury is undoubtedly one of the best market towns in the country. Steeped in nature, you are always only a short walk away from the very heart of the Kennet and Avon Canal, nestled in the town centre. With this in mind, visitors are spoilt for choice for things to do only a stone’s throw away from the waterside. Newbury is bursting with history, surrounded by some of West Berkshire’s most historic buildings and outstandingly beautiful countryside. There’s a museum, housed in a 17th century Cloth Hall and

32

Corn Store, which explores its eponymous heritage, a Gothic 9th century church, and a famous Beynon building, which has stood out for all the right reasons with its quirky architectural features since 1827. And it’s not just its history Newbury has to boast about; with its world-class theatre, independent shopping and indulgent dining experiences for all to enjoy, this market town is a true showstopper. Over half of Newbury’s eateries, bars and cafés are independently owned, meaning you can feel good about supporting small while eating exceptionally well on your next visit for brunch, lunch, or an evening family feast. And the town must be thriving, as Newbury has recently welcomed several new businesses to its already eclectic mix. British tapas restaurant and wine bar, Goat on the Roof, recently opened its doors on Newbury’s iconic bridge overlooking the canal. This ethically-focused restaurant puts a Spanish twist on the best of organic

Furthermore, new family-run The Goan Caff brings a bit of Goa to Newbury in this new speciality coffee shop, and local owners of Lumber Distillers, behind 137 Gin (available to purchase locally in Newbury and in Harrods), have opened a new gin experience bar and eatery. There is always room for one more streetfood specialty, so head to one of Newbury’s many specialty markets. The monthly Artisan Market takes place on the last Sunday of each month and showcases the best of homemade with unique gifts and artisan food produce to sink your teeth into. Newbury’s Vegan Market, back on 21 August, is not to be missed for all your eco-friendly and crueltyfree goodies – certainly not just for vegans. Explore one of the south east’s most successful open-air retail ventures, Parkway Shopping (read more over the page), who will be bringing the town centre to life with the return of their annual Big Summer Screen event. Heading back toward the canal you will find the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust, operating public trips on the Jubilee, a 29-passenger traditional narrow boat with a fully licensed bar onboard. These trips provide the perfect break for tired legs, and for those wishing to sit back with a refreshment while taking in the wildlife along the scenic route of the waterway. In this same spot, you will find the award-winning Teashop by the Canal, an Insta-worthy café offering beautifully decorated homemade treats and hosting the canal information centre upstairs. If the ambience of the town centre isn’t enough to keep you there all weekend, take the short walk to Newbury Racecourse for an action-packed day before returning to the town centre to unwind. Or, take a 10-minute drive to visit the grand country home of Downton Abbey: Highclere Castle. Visit Newbury, part of Newbury Business Improvement District (BID), remind

Bespoke, beautiful and dreamy blooms all year round. Meet Vanessa, the face behind Floral Beauts. Vanessa has been on a magical, floral journey since a day in 2021 when she took her door wreath down and decided to create something else, which led to her chatting with her Grandad, who used to be a florist, and ended booking courses to follow her floral passion. Her flowers are bespoke and beautiful, using the most luxurious flowers to conjure up stunning creations, using silk, fresh, dried flowers, creating flower dreams. Vanessa can create anything from pretty headbands to door wreaths, to bespoke shop displays for that bigger wow factor. They can also create arrangements for baby showers, christenings, and parties. There’s nothing she can’t put her creative flair to. floralbeauts.co.uk

THERE ARE A HOST OF MENUS

T

he Queen’s Platinum Jubilee was a momentous occasion for all of the UK, but for those in Windsor there was an extra special feeling to proceedings. “It was a once in a lifetime experience,” grins Suraj Lokhande, executive head chef of Leaf, the in-house dining destination at Castle Hotel Windsor. “We were working hard over the long weekend, but there was a fantastic atmosphere in the hotel and throughout Windsor.” The occasion was marked by Lokhande with a special afternoon tea menu. “I was delighted to be able to design that,” he says. “Featuring some of the Queen’s favourites and our own twist on traditional treats, including coronation chicken wrap and lemon posset, our Jubilee

Afternoon Tea has been exceptionally popular. Over the Jubilee weekend, we served nearly 350 in just four days.” Take a glance at Leaf’s food and drink options, and afternoon tea is just one of a host of innovative twists to a dining experience. The a la carte menu is backed up by special breakfast and brunch menus, there is a pretheatre offering and a great drinks menu, not to mention a separate garden and bar menu. Even children have their own special twists with the Sapling menu. “As a father myself I was keen to develop a menu that little ones would enjoy,” Lokhande says. “I really wanted them to be excited when they see the small touches, so we’ve been as creative as possible with their dishes.” For the adults, Lokhande and his team have gone out of their way to cover all bases. “Leaf’s seasonal menu features everything from comforting classics to THE ATMOSPHERIC GARDEN AREA

light bites and delectable vegan options,” he says on the cooking we can expect. “On a personal level, I love to create a plate that is full of colours and often take risks with new ideas for dishes, which adds a bit of theatre to the dining experience.” The food is indeed exceptional at Leaf, but I also recently enjoyed a pint of beer from the Windsor & Eton Brewery, which suggests they support local too. “That’s very important to us,” Lokhande nods. “We pride ourselves in being able to showcase the finest locally sourced produce from our trusted suppliers. Windsor & Eton Brewery have a fantastic range that is very popular with our guests. It’s very important, too, that we don’t compromise the quality of the ingredients.” On 14 July, we can all look forward to a special wine tasting dinner, which is another example of how Lokhande wants to offer something new to guests. “This is the second event that we have held with local wine estate Stanlake Park,” he explains. “Expert winemakers Nico Centonze and Natalia Pezzone will chair the event and I’ve created a five-course meal that pairs superlative English wines with enticing seasonal dishes.” It’s remarkable to think that this is their first year in existence. “Leaf feels like my baby!” Lokhande exclaims. “I’m very proud of how popular the restaurant has been since opening. We love being able to bring the Windsor community into both the hotel and Leaf.” The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee was memorable for so many reasons for Windsor – and Leaf will keep the celebrations going. castlehotelwindsor.com/dining A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

FOOD & DRINK • Q&A

“Guests have a front row seat to all the culinary theatre” Q Why do you think people enjoy such

an intimate dining experience?

A Unlike many other private dining rooms,

THE SHED IS AN INTIMATE DINING EXPERIENCE

Down THE SHED

We speak to Andrea Ellis, sales and events executive for The Shed, about the unique 10-seater Hand & Flowers offshoot PREPARE YOURSELF FOR SPECIAL MENUS

Q When was The Shed first launched

and what was the idea behind it?

A The Shed launched in 2016 and was

originally used as the development kitchen for The Hand & Flowers, but as the popularity of the pub grew, we started getting more and more requests for private dining, so we decided to turn The Shed into this unique culinary space for just ten guests. The Hand & Flowers’ kitchen expanded, and we were able to develop dishes from there.

Q How have you designed the space? A Seating ten guests, The Shed has recently

been completely refurbished and offers a highly interactive, fine dining experience in an informal, relaxed setting. High-backed leather seats run along a large marble counter, so guests have a front row seat to all the culinary theatre and are able to chat to the chefs as they prep and cook dishes.

The Shed offers a unique experience, similar to a chef’s table, but in your own private space! Our chefs encourage interaction and are at their happiest when explaining the processes behind each dish and how each individual ingredient comes together.

Q Who are the chefs involved? A The Shed includes a team of senior

chefs from both the two Michelin star The Hand & Flowers and the one Michelin star The Coach. The menus have been created by this creative team and are overseen by Tom Kerridge.

Q What can we expect on the menu? A The chefs take pride in developing

seasonal menus for The Shed, sourcing only the very best ingredients. The Shed offers a four-course menu, priced at £150 per person. Alongside the food, Gavin Hills, wine expert at The Hand & Flowers, is on hand to recommend wines to pair with each course to complement the menu. The Shed also offers a five-course set tasting menu, priced at £250 per person. This menu includes canapés on arrival, petit fours, a glass of fizz and paired wines with each course, as well as a signed copy of The Hand & Flowers Cookbook per group booking.

Q Do you have any events

planned for the summer?

A This year, to celebrate the culinary talent

across the UK, The Shed is hosting a “Taste of Britain” guest chef series. Guest chefs include Gareth Ward, Nathan Davies, Lorna McNee, John Walton and Luke Holder. There are only a few places remaining so book now to avoid disappointment. Another popular event hosted by The Shed is our Butcher’s Experience with Jamie May, executive chef and butcher at The Butcher’s Tap & Grill. These experiences take place three or four times per year and celebrate British butchery.

HORSE GUARDS GIN

M A K E I T A T R I P L E Taking a closer look at three unique gin companies proving to be popular in and around the county MR HOBBS GIN

HORSE GUARDS GIN Sitting in a quintessentially British pub in the Berkshire countryside, entrepreneurs were discussing a new initiative to revive lapsed trademarks, and sipping G&Ts. As gin aficionados, their eyes were drawn to an old-fashioned bottle of gin behind the bar. According to the barman, it was an historic brand which had disappeared over the years. The comment couldn’t have been more timely or fortuitous. Horse Guards Gin had indeed been a premium gin brand in the 1960s, but the distillery had closed and a much-loved brand and trademark had disappeared. The time had come to start producing rather than consuming. After many rounds of creative product development, the modern blend of Horse Guards London Dry Gin was born. No compromise was made to achieve its smooth and sumptuous taste. Their objective was to create ‘gin as it is meant to be’. The gin boasts a predominant juniper flavour, expertly balanced with juicy citrus

notes and just a hint of spice. Smooth, with a long finish, it’s perfect in a gin and tonic, as well as more exotic cocktails. It is also outrageously delicious. horseguards.london

MR HOBBS GIN The Mr Hobbs Gin range of products is brought to you by the family pleasure boating business, Hobbs of Henley who give you the most enjoyable way to “mess about on the river’’. They have a portfolio of cherished family tipples, all acclaimed and much-loved, and each celebrate their Henley history in unique ways. They recently celebrated their 150th anniversary with the launch of Mr Hobbs 150; an award-winning, classic London Dry Gin with quintessential English heritage and bursting with nine botanicals including lemon peel, black pepper and grapefruit with notes of elderflower and green cardamom finishing with refreshing lemon verbena. mrhobbsgin.co.uk

GRIFFITHS BROTHERS DISTILLERY What began as a challenge between two brothers to produce an impressionable gin for family and friends, quickly became an obsession. Soon sights were set higher when the brothers converted a unit inside a family owned 1930s aircraft factory. Now, the brothers are producing award-winning gin, opening the distillery doors for intimate tours and tastings, and collaborating with other brands to produce bespoke, white label spirits. Set in the idyllic countryside of Penn, Amersham, the distillery is home to rotary evaporators Roberta and Aretha, which allows them to extract the flavour from botanicals without cooking them. Before distillation, the botanicals are macerated in organic, neutral grain spirit alcohol. Whilst traditional methods treat botanicals as one, they achieve a far more superior flavour by using the optimum maceration time for each botanical individually. griffithsbrothers.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Country LIFE

Roxtons is flourishing in Hungerford after 40 plus years. The company’s Jane Pratt explains how they have evolved by MARK KEBBLE

Q What originally inspired the launch of Roxtons in 1979? A Roxtons launched with an aim to provide country clothing and kit to those interested in outdoor pursuits, in an accessible location close to the M4. Q What did you offer then? A Everything a country-loving person

needed for a day in the field. Shooting, fishing and polo were the principal sports, and alongside this we offered a range of accessories and gifts.

“Today we focus on a curated collection of labels, some highly recognisable brands, and others less well-known”

Q How different was the approach to fashion back then? A Originally, the focus was less fashion orientated. Over the years we realised the strong demand for well made, stylish apparel in great fabrics for both women and men. Our collection of women’s and menswear expanded and ran alongside the country kit. Q How have you evolved over the decades? A Today we offer less country clothing and

instead focus on a curated collection of British and international labels – some highly

recognisable brands and others less wellknown, but with a loyal following. Our range of gifts has expanded hugely with unique and surprising presents sourced from around the globe. We now have shops in Stockbridge, Alresford and Haslemere and are recognised as a leading independent retailer in the south of England. Our online presence is established too. Q What hasn’t changed? A The consistent factor must be our

outstanding customer service. We strive to make every customer feel welcome in our stores and good old customer service remains the backbone of our ethos.

Q What would we find in your Hungerford store today? A Right now in our Hungerford store you will be struck by colour! We have embraced the summer vibe with cottons, linens and knits for both women and men, in a rainbow of shades, complemented by cheerful accessories and lifestyle products. Q What do you like about the area? A We love Hungerford and our new position

on the High Street. We really appreciate the loyalty shown by our customers and their

wish to shop locally. Together with our fellow traders, we hope to ensure that Hungerford remains a go-to destination. Q How do you decide on the brands you stock? A We have several key brands which we buy year in, year out, and our customers wait in anticipation to see the new season’s offerings. We complement these with new brands, sourced both in the UK and Europe during twice yearly buying trips to Europe. Our menswear in particular has a strong Italian influence, whilst the gifts are ever-changing. Q What are the SS22 highlights

for men and women? A Colour is king in 2022. Everyone is ready for some joyfulness and the shop is alive with colour, from dresses and accessories for the girls, to shirts and jeans for the guys. Q Are you noticing any particular trends? A Our customers are becoming ever more environmentally aware and are willing to invest in well-made items that will not

date and stand the test of time. PostCovid, the trend edges towards a less formal vibe, yet still chic and beautiful. Q What do you offer for country sports? A We are a main UK stockist of Schoffel – the

ubiquitous country sports brand whose gilets are found on the backs of so many, aged between 17 and 87! As a nod to our heritage, we offer a range of outdoor kit ranging from dog leads to cartridge bags and record books.

Q What’s next for Roxtons? A We hope to flourish on the High Street

whilst continuing to evolve to meet our customers’ needs and provide exemplary customer service, both online and in store.

he new TANDi luxury tanning brush is a woman owned brand. It was designed by a selfproclaimed tan aficionado who was looking for a better way to apply fake tan to the contours of the face and body. The brush is a chunky, high gloss wonder that can be used to get a flawless natural looking glow with your favourite fake tan or body makeup. The TANDi has already gained the attention of celebrity makeup artists and beauty experts, and is a must have product for your makeup bag this summer. The densely packed bristles hold lotion and mousse on the surface of the brush with less absorption, meaning that more of the product adheres to the skin, giving better coverage from the first layer. A long, wipe clean, glossy handle helps to prevent tell-tale stains on the hands during application. The large flat brush head feels velvety to the touch and allows for a smooth application of product onto the skin. The luxury tanning brush allows you to buff tan into the skin for a natural looking, blended result. The TANDi is also stain resistant and is made with cruelty free materials. The TANDi makes the application of fake tan quick, easy and mess free. It works wonders on facial contours, hairline, neck, chest, ears, hands, wrists, knees, feet, ankles, armpits, tummy button and bikini line.

M A R I N E M A K E O V E R Introducing Sereia Skincare, a brand powered by the sea and all set to nourish your body

S

ereia Skincare is a brand new vegan bodycare range designed to help women of all ages feel good inside and out. The brand wants to change the narrative when it comes to skincare routines and get more people to start nourishing the skin on our bodies as well as on our faces. Created in lockdown by Charlotte Flather, who has many years’ experience in the beauty industry working for brands including Clarins and Clinique, the range is inspired by her and her late mother’s love of the sea. In fact, Sereia takes its name from the Portuguese word for mermaid. The products are packed with powerful marine nutrients including seaweed extract and sea buckthorn oil. Rich in

vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, they are designed to leave bodies toned, nourished, hydrated and with a healthy, natural glow. Charlotte says: “I have taken care to develop a range of effective skin nourishing products and tools, to empower women of all ages to take ownership of their skin concerns in a way that feels true to them. I want women to start loving the real skin they are in. “I’ve focused initially on bodycare because I want to encourage more of us to think about the importance of caring for the skin on our bodies, as well as on our faces. While the majority of us have set facial skincare routines, we don’t know how to look after our skin from the chin down, but the body needs attention and nourishment to thrive.” With the mantra ‘Feel Good in your Real Skin’, Sereia’s also promoting the

importance of self-care and body positivity. It has created easy rituals, including a 60 Second Spa, to help an increasing number of women who have developed home skincare routines in lockdown to support both their mental and physical wellbeing. Charlotte adds: “I believe that beauty starts from the inside out. Every life experience settles somewhere in our body so we need to take care of it. The accumulation of mental, emotional and physical stress can be treated by routine self-care rituals and this is the ethos behind Sereia. I want to help women see that the time we spend on ourselves is invaluable to our mental health, self-esteem and confidence.” There are currently nine products and tools in the brand new range, available to buy now at sereiaskincare.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

m Bathach is part of a traditional working croft where Hebridean Sheep can be seen grazing and running on the surrounding hills of heather. The cottage is part of an extensive refurbishment carried out on the original cow barn using traditional stonework and cedar logs from Pioneer Log Homes of Canada. Tastefully decorated using local tweeds and traditional furnishings complemented by modern appliances used in a contemporary way. The area is world renowned for its stunning scenery, wildlife, food and drink and friendly local communities. Not so well known is the low rainfall and mild climate due to the Atlantic Gulf Stream, with glorious summers and beautiful long sunsets throughout the year. The dark sky is a stunning sight with the stars clearly visible, particularly here in Altass. The cottage is situated in the small hamlet of Rosehall which is surrounded by magnificent salmon fishing rivers and trout lochs, woodland walks and a welcoming local hotel serving delicious food. A perfect base for touring, being based midway between west, north and east coasts, where the varied coastline is a magnet for wildlife and birdwatching.

Recounting the story of Bridgman, featuring 45 years of the best in British furniture

F

or over 45 years, Bridgman has created the very finest luxury furniture and accessories. As they’ve grown over three generations, their ‘Best of British’ collections, designed here in the UK, continue to redefine how we relax, entertain and enjoy the finer things our homes and gardens have to offer, expertly crafted to last for years to come. Bridgman’s story began when Peter Bridgman followed his father into the furniture industry, founding PJ Bridgman & Company Ltd in 1977 to manufacture reproduction chairs and TV cabinets from mahogany. From the creation of their very first piece, three core values have been at the heart of their furniture – quality, comfort and style. With full control over the design, manufacturing and delivery process, Bridgman’s quality and service are unmatched to this day. During the 1980s, the company soon started supplying JVC, Grundig and Toshiba with TV cabinets, and Princess Diana was photographed alongside her

family on one of Bridgman’s beautifully crafted chairs, cementing the brand firmly within the British furniture industry. In 1989, Bridgman introduced premiumgrade teak timber garden furniture to their range, using their unique detailing machine to craft outstanding pieces like the Harvest Bench, one of their earliest ground-breaking designs. The piece featured intricately pressed details in the backrest, rather like carvings, which won the company a number of awards. Unsurprisingly, Bridgman furniture soon became recognised across the country for its design excellence as the company turned its attention to creating the finest outdoor furniture on the market. In 1990, Bridgman began showcasing new products at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, a 30year tradition that has been a particularly special place for the brand to connect with like-minded customers and immerse in the gardening and outdoor furniture world. At the turn of the millennium, Bridgman quickly identified a demand for lowmaintenance rattan garden furniture and started appointing the expertise of the A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

finest rattan handweavers in the world. The UK team, based in Enfield, took ownership of the entire design and production process, working closely with partner manufacturers overseas to become the first company in Britain to supply premium rattan furniture. Their pieces were, and still are, expertly handwoven by Indonesian weavers who have woven natural wicker for generations. Today, they weave highdensity synthetic material round powdercoated aluminium frames, capable of withstanding the elements for many years. Bridgman are one of only a handful of companies licensed to supply furniture woven from this specialist Hularo wicker, the finest synthetic rattan in Europe. The UV inhibitors and colour are integral to the fibre, giving it unrivalled durability against wear and weathering and allowing Bridgman to offer industry-leading ten-year guarantees. In 2011, Bridgman introduced waterprotective and stain-resistant technology to create premium fully waterproof cushions, another statement piece in their awardwinning catalogue. The only ones of their kind in the UK, these cushions have been tested against red wine, coffee and even pure bleach stains and can remain outside all year round, come rain or shine. Both uniquely practical and sumptuously soft, the cushions are filled with a supportive foam that ensures unmatched comfort not to be found anywhere else. Ever inspired to innovate, Bridgman’s award-winning outdoor catalogue now spans rattan, aluminium, resin, rope and even fully upholstered designs. Their limitededition Ascot Modular Collection brings the comfort, detail and style of interior design into the outdoors with revolutionary fully upholstered sofas designed to create the ultimate alfresco lounging experience.

THE ASCOT MODULAR SOFA SET

“Princess Diana was photographed alongside her family on a Bridgman chair” New for 2022, their contemporary Monaco and Cannes collections have been expertly handcrafted using UV-resistant premium rope, for a pared back look created for modern outdoor living. Inspired by their time at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the company opened their flagship store in Enfield, the UK’s largest luxury garden furniture showroom. This was followed swiftly by the opening of four more showrooms in Walton-onThames, Winchester, Old Amersham and Wilmslow across the 2010s, and

two new stores in Royal Tunbridge Wells and Cheltenham just this year. The secret to Bridgman’s four and a half decades of success has been an uncompromising promise to provide their customers with the very best service, quality and experience possible. Unafraid to innovate, Bridgman’s three-generation family business continues to transform lives, experiences and spaces with luxurious, beautifully made furniture. bridgman.co.uk

FINISHING TOUCHES Must-have décor to inspire your home design B y S A R A H B A R C L AY

A

dding a touch of luxury to your home doesn’t need to be difficult. By adding a few elements of décor to a room, you’re able to transform your space into something unique. Here, I have outlined a few must-have décor pieces to include in your home for you to reference when designing your space. Before selecting a piece that you think will work, give some thought into how you want the atmosphere in a room to look and feel. It’s important to consider the mood that you’re creating with your décor and how incorporating

certain colours, textures, or shapes can influence the feeling of the space. A rug is often the first thing that you notice when you enter a room. You may want to look at different colour options depending on what atmosphere you want to capture. Warm neutral tones will help to soften the space and create a calm and comfortable environment. On the other hand, cool bright tones can completely change the atmosphere of a room to one that is lively and energetic. You can think about warm tones for your bedroom or living room, while cooler tones may be better suited for an office space. Paintings can guide your design by allowing you to incorporate more colours for an attractive space. This can be done by selecting colours from a painting and sourcing furniture and accessories in these colours for the room. These subtle touches tie a space together and make it feel designed. Keep in mind the texture too. A painterly artwork will have a much different feeling than that of a print. If you’re looking for something a little different to inspire your home décor, try

incorporating sculptures. These can be small or large depending on the space you have available and what the form conveys. Think about how the texture – whether rough or smooth – will impact the overall atmosphere of the room. The shape itself is also important to consider as more rounded organic forms can create a serene, natural atmosphere, whereas more geometric or linear forms can add a sense of formality to a space. Where you place them will depend on the layout of your room, but aim to style them with other pieces of décor like flowers or plants to bring them to life. Finally, cushions are a classic must-have. It may be tempting to get neutral colours to decorate your sofa, however adding contrasting colours creates a more visually interesting and cohesive design. Cushions

88

are customisable as you can select them based on pattern, shape, size, texture, and colour. Don’t forget to keep comfort in mind. If you’re selecting cushions for your living room, you may want ones that invite you to sit down and relax. For the bedroom, use softer colours and fluffy textures to encourage sleep or rest. A cohesive design is where multiple elements such as rugs, paintings, sculptures, and cushions work together in terms of colour, texture, and form to create a particular atmosphere in a space. By understanding the function and feeling of a room that you want to convey, you will have a clearer starting point before selecting décor for your

home. If you feel overwhelmed by all the options and design considerations, an interior designer can help you navigate the design process every step of the way. THE SHOWROOM

EVOLVING WITH THE TIMES We look back at the transformation of local business, Ben Heath, who have adapted to changes in interior design

A

family-run business, Ben Heath – previously named Tables and Chairs – was established in 1999 by Ben and his father John. Originally sourcing fine quality dining sets and furniture from Britain and Europe, in 2002 they expanded into sofas and these were sourced from the upholstery capital of Britain, Long Eaton. In 2003, John decided to retire and Ben took on the business to develop it further, and in 2006 re-branded as ‘Ben Heath’. In 2007, he expanded the business into kitchens. The very first kitchen was the Chichester from Neptune. One of the

major challenges became a lack of UK and European furniture suppliers as more and more closed down due to Chinese imports so, in, 2012 he saw an opportunity to make and design his own bespoke kitchens and furniture. The first workshop started off in a small barn located in Hungerford, Berkshire, but with high demand for their bespoke kitchens and furniture they moved and expanded the workshop in 2017 to a new unit, only 400 yards from their showroom. Today they have an inspiring showroom, highlighting contemporary and classic kitchens with all the accessories to make your space your own. They have room sets for you to fall in love with, where they showcase all their hand-made furniture, with soft lighting, flooring, fabrics, and

luxurious soft furnishings, everything to enable you to imagine the setting in your home. Plus, they are champions of finding exclusive artists, such as Swin Edmonds, who is not only a local artist, but also an ex-colleague of theirs. The showroom has a team of eight people to assist customers with making the right choices on design, whether it be for a brand new kitchen, redesign of the living room, or a beautiful bespoke original piece to finish off a favourite space. With a wealth of knowledge and 20-plus years of experience in bespoke designs, they know how to create beautiful interiors. Whether you are renovating your entire home, upgrading your soft furnishings or starting afresh with your favourite room, their designers will work with you to transform your existing space into the environment of your dreams. They look forward to bringing their home to yours. A PROJECT ON HEADLEY FARM

GARDEN OFFICE? MAKE SURE YOUR WI-FI SIGNAL REACHES THAT FAR

“There are so many reasons why you might want to use Wi-Fi in the garden and make the most of the sunshine”

OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT

I

How to give your garden a boost this summer

t’s that time again when we all want to make the most of the gorgeous sunshine and brilliant weather whenever we can. There are so many reasons why you might want to use Wi-Fi in the garden at this time of year. Whether you want to catch-up with Love Island, binge on The Hustle, or play your ultimate Spotify playlist at your next BBQ, Swish have got tips to help you.

1. Get a Wi-Fi extender. Try plugging it in at the back of your home nearest to the garden or moving your router back there. This may extend your range into your outdoor area. 2. Look at what’s around your router. Before you start maximising your coverage, consider what materials hamper Wi-Fi signals. Wi-Fi can be blocked by concrete and stone, and also struggles to get through metal – so avoid plugging in your router behind

appliances such as fridges and microwaves. 3. Ensure you disconnect unnecessary devices from your network. This will give you more bandwidth to play with outside. Avoid using game consoles, smart home devices and video calling that all take up a lot of bandwidth – easier said than done in a household of internet users, but doing this frees up bandwidth for other devices. Having a Full Fibre broadband connection will also give you a head start at boosting your starting speed. 4. Make the most of your mobile phone's personal hotspot feature and connect to devices using the connection from your mobile. Remember, every home is different, so no-one can guarantee you perfect Wi-Fi coverage unless you’ve had a tailored visit by a broadband professional. With Swish Fibre, you can work, surf and play this summer with no interruptions. Find out if you can switch to Full Fibre at SwishFibre.com

t this time of the year, outdoor spots are everything to make the most of summer – and arriving at this property on Manor Road in High Wycombe, the gardens certainly take your breath away. It’s almost a shame to head inside to see what else this home, currently on the market with Savills, has to offer. It is a well-presented detached home, enjoying the aforementioned beautiful rear garden with a heated swimming pool, and with the benefit of a spacious, selfcontained two-bedroom annexe providing secondary accommodation. Set on a generous plot, this seven-bedroom house is arranged over three floors, offering superb flexible space for a growing family and features about 0.7 acres in all. On the ground floor, the reception hall, with cloaks storage, cloakroom and stairs to the first floor, leads through to the sitting room and kitchen/breakfast/ dining room. Overlooking the pool and

“There is an annexe attached to the main house, which is a spacious two storey building” garden the sitting room is of an excellent size, with sliding doors on to the outside terrace and a striking marble and wood decorative fireplace with an open fire. The kitchen/breakfast/dining room is the hub of the house, with the kitchen area opening into a sitting and adjacent dining area, both with doors on to the garden. The kitchen itself is well appointed with an excellent range of units and incorporating a breakfast bar with seating for four. Integrated appliances include a gas hob, double oven, dishwasher and with space for a fridge/freezer. A further hallway, with door access to both the front and back gardens, provides a utility area with units, sink and space for appliances. Just off this hallway is a guest bedroom, ideal for an au pair or visiting relatives, with a sitting and bedroom area, fitted wardrobes, kitchenette and an en-suite shower room. On the first floor, the principal bedroom lies to the front with a well-appointed en-suite bathroom. There are four further bedrooms on this floor, two with fitted wardrobes and one giving door access to the annexe, served by the family bathroom. Stairs lead to the top floor and a generous landing area, and through to

There is an annexe attached to the main house, which is a spacious two storey building that is delightful and has its own separate entrance and garden area. The front door is to the side and leads into a welcoming and generous reception hall. The kitchen is large and well equipped and allows plenty of space for a table. The sitting room, with front and rear aspects, is of good proportions with sliding doors opening on to the pretty outside patio and garden beyond. with a summer house and storage shed, together with a lovely private patio. Occupying a generous plot and set back from the road, the property is approached over a carriage driveway providing parking for several vehicles and giving access to a double garage, with a large attached workshop. There are several areas of lawn to the front enclosed with fencing and high hedging giving privacy. The rear garden is a delight and a significant attraction, with a southerly aspect and a wide raised terrace area adjoining the rear of the main house, giving a perfect spot for outside dining. Steps from the terrace lead to the heated swimming pool, with a paved surround and adjacent pool house. Beyond the pool is a large area of lawn, screened with mature trees and high hedging providing seclusion, and towards the rear of the garden is a greenhouse, raised vegetable beds and of particular note a mature, productive apple tree. Property agent Ben Dommett, part of the residential team at Savills Beaconsfield, had this to say about the home, known as Fairmeadow. “Fairmeadow is a superbly well-presented family home located in one of Buckinghamshire’s most sought after private roads. Within the catchment area of several excellent schools and just a short distance from both High Wycombe and Beaconsfield, with their connections into London and plenty of high quality amenities, the house would be perfect for those with children, while a separate annexe means that owners could also accommodate elderly relatives. “As soon as you arrive your eye is drawn to the beautiful gardens and when you enter the house it’s incredibly light and bright with a great sense of space,” he continues. “A kitchen/

breakfast/dining room sits at the heart of the property, while the adjoining sitting room features a striking marble and wood decorative fireplace and overlooks the gardens and swimming pool. “The rear garden is an absolute delight, with a southerly aspect and a wide raised terrace to the back of the main house which provides the perfect spot for outside dining. Steps from the terrace lead to the heated swimming pool, with a paved surround and adjacent pool house.” It’s certainly one to see. ARTISTIC INTENT As children, we all love to draw. In fact, as babysitters, give a child a blank piece of paper and crayons, and you can sit back as they create their next masterpiece. Yet, as we get older, many lose that inclination to draw, either due to confidence or a lack of opportunity. Over the page, an education expert writes about why it's key we promote the arts.

or those of you who have young children or, indeed, remember when you did, you will recall, very clearly, the pride that you had in their drawings and scribblings on paper. No toddler says that they can’t draw! However, as children grow a little older things can change. Over the years, it has always saddened me when children claim that they can’t draw. What they mean is that they find it hard to create a representative image on paper. Some go on to say that they “don’t like art”. Many years ago, I took a Reception class to the National Gallery to see the Wright of Derby exhibition, as part of a bigger project on Light. I still take joy (and a little bit of pride) in proving some of my colleagues wrong. They didn’t think that five-year-olds would be able to cope with such an exhibition, but the children proved them wrong. They sat cross legged on the floor in front of the paintings, mesmerised by the National Gallery education guide who regaled them with stories, encouraged them to really look at each painting and engage in conversation with her about what they saw. They all loved it. In our Laidlaw Education classrooms, we enjoy all the wisdom and creativity of

“What they all discover is an outlet for exploring emotions” a particularly amazing art teacher – she has just celebrated her 80th birthday. Diana shares her passion for words and art with each child, whatever age, and those who are keen and those who say they don’t like it – or can’t do it! What they all discover is an outlet for exploring their thoughts and emotions. Amazingly, from there emerge wonderful pieces, but it is how they discover a satisfaction and sense of themselves, through Diana’s gentle child-led guidance and teaching that is more important. Adolescent boys who have previously hated creative outlets are a particular triumph. So, we come to July and a time when we are celebrating Children’s Art Week. In fact, it is not a week but three weeks (29 June-19 July), and is a celebration for children of all ages to enjoy. There will be opportunities to participate and discover so much about the world of art – online, at home, and in museums and art galleries. For all children who are naturally drawn to art in any form, this is a bonanza to be explored. However, for your children who utter the words of not liking art, exclaim that they cannot draw or simply show no interest, here is a real opportunity to open up new worlds to them, for each of them to grow in confidence, to find new ways of expressing themselves and connecting with their emotions – or simply having fun. Art is around us everywhere, and I hope that you will have opportunities to explore, with your children, during the course of these exciting weeks.

EDUCATION • TALKING HEAD

THERE'S A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY AT THE ORATORY PREP SCHOOL

FRESH START Andrew De Silva will be joining The Oratory Prep School in Goring Heath as head from September. Here, he tells us what attracted him to the role Q What does The Oratory Prep School offer? A Put simply: perspective, ambition and curiosity. The school’s motto, and that of our founder, is Cor Ad Cor Loquitur – ‘Heart speaks to Heart’. Through this, we are able to offer our pupils high academic expectations through a literature rich curriculum focusing on transferable skills to enable our children to thrive – not just in their next schools, but beyond. Gone are the assumptions that Preparatory Schools are purely transitional educational establishments. At The OPS, we educate children from 2 to 13; we therefore have a significant responsibility to ensure that they are happy, nurtured, confident and inquisitive during their 11 years at our school. As one would expect, if these virtues are embedded, academic standards will thrive – and of course they do at OPS.

ANDREW DE SILVA

Q Why were you keen on taking over the role as headteacher? A As educationalists, we all thoroughly love the schools we are in and this is certainly the case for my current school, which has so much to offer its pupils, including being the Choir School for the boy Choristers at Canterbury Cathedral. Faith, worship and choral music are very important to me (particularly as a former Cathedral Chorister and, more recently, a Lay Clerk at Winchester Cathedral), so what is it then that makes me want to be the head at The Oratory Prep School? There are many reasons for this, but the pull of a great school can excite the very best educators. Now I certainly don’t rate myself as one of those, as I am still proud of the privilege to learn, but there are three main reasons which called me to the school. First, the people. The fact that the school educates its pupils through the lens of humanity really does resonate with my personal Christian faith (as the son of an Anglican Priest) and belief as an educator. Second, the journey. Whilst the school has a fantastic reputation, enviable facilities and resources and the most glorious site, I believe there is always more that can be achieved to ensure that children thrive educationally. The ambition of the school is to become the market leader – and for me, this is central; however, whilst it is good to have a goal and a destination, I am focused on enjoying the journey. If we collectively do that, then our destination is a given. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Third, the group. As a teacher, leader and educationalist, networking is incredibly important. I am proud to be joining The Bellevue family as it encourages schools to network. As a previous statemaintained head of a large 5-form entry school, my setting thrived on sharing best practice and collaborative work. Q How would you sum up your teaching approach? A I have a specific vision (based on various educationalists) as to how children learn best, but for me it fundamentally comes down to:  Positive relationships;  Quality planning which varies the learning to meet the needs of all;  Well-thought task design which excites learning and is relevant;  Continual assessment to ensure that children are praised and challenged with robust next steps to support learning. Q Outside of the classroom, what kind of opportunities does The Oratory Prep School offer? A In addition to excellent classroom teaching and learning, the facilities, networks and expertise afforded to our pupils enables them to have an extensive range of co-curricular provision – ranging from Public Speaking, Science Club, Lego Club and Mandarin. For pupils in Senior Prep (Years 5-8), a Saturday Enrichment Programme is offered and this helps to further develop skills in leadership, collaboration and critical thinking. Like many of our counterparts, we provide our children with a wide variety of extra opportunities, including a competitive schedule of sport fixtures throughout the

114

“I want to ensure we provide all our children with exceptional learning experiences” academic year and a vast array of activities for children to showcase their talents, including a recent performance in the o2! Q What kind of boarding experience would we find? A Not one which believes in being just a home from home. We are proud to be able to offer boarding from Year 3 and above and to provide our ‘family’ with an enjoyable and enriching experience. Children have the option of full-time, weekly, or flexible boarding to suit each family’s individual needs and we also offer shortterm placements for international students from countries such as France and Spain.

Q What are you looking forward to most when you take over? A Too many to mention! Whether trips, concerts, plays, lessons, clubs, boarding, Chapel – there are certainly many aspects that I am looking forward to. The school already provides its children with wonderful learning opportunities and I certainly do want to experience these, so that we can ensure that we provide all our children with exceptional learning experiences. I am tremendously excited to meet with parents and with the wider community, including other heads. Much like my belief in teaching, relationships are critical – and I look forward to forming these with all those involved in the school. I have already had the privilege to spend a few days in school before the summer holidays, and I have learnt such a lot from all involved at OPS and I look forward to continuing to learn when I start as head in September.

adored my time at Downe House, and I think the greatest thing I learnt was the importance and the power of female friendships, so I would say nurture them, support them, encourage them because they will be life-long, vital, beautiful relationships for the rest of your life.” Miranda Hart, Downe House alumnae. Downe House values kindness and a sense of community equally alongside their pupils’ commitment to make the most of the outstanding academic, boarding and co-curricular opportunities. Pupils are nurtured and challenged in equal measure to be the very best versions of themselves and they leave as interested and inspired young women thoroughly engaged in the world around them. For young women to take their place alongside their (male) colleagues, a

sense of self-worth and confidence is essential. Downe House students are nurtured to make equal contributions in the world and expect to be treated with respect. The school provides an education tailored to girls’ needs where there is no pressure to grow up too early, where they have outstanding alumnae role models to inspire and support them, and where they can connect with other young women across the globe (Downe House has an extensive Global School’s Exchange programme), which makes a significant difference in enabling confidence to grow. Providing a single-sex education within a boarding structure means that Downe House pupils have time and space to enjoy a rich and varied life with countless opportunities to step outside their comfort zone inside and outside the classroom. see that all subjects and activities are equally accessed without gender stereotyping, from sport with 100% match participation for pupils in the Lower School, to politics with their debate and Mini MBA programmes. Through their strong partnership with Radley College and other schools, Downe House pupils have frequent opportunities to work, socialise and develop respectful and meaningful friendships with boys whilst retaining the benefits of an all-girls’ setting. The Downe House ‘World Ready Programme’ prepares students through a structured framework of opportunities, activities and support designed to take them on an individual journey to nurture their personal development. Through boarding girls learn to live successfully together, they learn the value of kindness and the importance of appreciating individuality and diversity, which not only prepares them for their next educational steps, but prepares them with valuable social skills for the rest of their life. “Thank you so much for creating such a special school for me to attend! Downe House really is a one-of-a-kind place. I have learnt so much over the past seven years, and really do feel ready to enter the ‘world’. he Vache Baroque Festival will host a series of workshops until 14 July working with two primary schools in Buckinghamshire, exploring the world’s environmental challenges through music and art. The participating schools are St Peter’s Catholic Primary School in Marlow and Haddenham Community Junior School in Aylesbury. Students will enjoy performances from some of today’s finest classical musicians, as well as opportunities for them to sing. Designer Carla Conte will then lead the students in creating art pieces that encapsulate their responses to the music, all exploring the theme of environmental challenges the world is facing. The students’ artwork will be displayed at Vache Baroque’s summer festival in September 2022. The workshops will take place on consecutive Thursdays – 30 June, 7 July, and 14 July – and students are also invited to attend the festival’s Open Dress Rehearsal on 1 September with their parents or guardians. hopes to continue these relationships in 2023 with refresher workshops and an opportunity to attend the festival as a class and see their work displayed once again. The Vache Baroque Festival is a fresh and forward-looking organisation bringing audiences world-class Baroque music in a stunning setting. Just a stone’s throw from London, performances are held in the grounds of The Vache, an historic house located in the heart of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Vache Baroque believes high-quality productions of Baroque music and drama should be open to everyone. The festival produces vibrant events that inform, challenge and entertain new and seasoned audiences, combining contemporary artistic disciplines in performance and pop-up installations away from the stage beforehand. These events are a platform

“CO2 levels regularly exceed 2,500 ppm in our schools, causing children to lose focus”

Breathe EASY Poorly ventilated schools remain a nationwide problem, says an air technology specialist at Plasma Clean

A

By STEVE KEOGH

recent article in The Guardian estimated that 3.4 million children across the UK are at risk of long-term health conditions and infectious diseases due to poorly ventilated schools. Children spend a large portion of their lives in school – equating to around 7,800 hours across their educational life. We all generate CO2 when breathing out, and when you combine multiple bodies in an enclosed space with increased temperatures and humidity, this can significantly reduce air quality. It is known that a CO2 level above 1,000 ppm has a negative impact. Studies have shown it can cause pupil performance

to decrease by up to 15 per cent, cognitive performance to worsen by 60 per cent and could even lead to a significant (30 per cent) increase in headaches and respiratory issues. According to a February 2019 report, also in The Guardian, CO2 levels in schools can regularly exceed 2,500 ppm, causing children to lose focus. There are some 32,000 schools across the UK and indoor air quality is a challenge for many of them – most specifically those in older buildings without good mechanical ventilation. However, even newer school buildings put pupils at risk without proper measures to ensure indoor air quality and ventilation. Many believe opening a window is a way of generating a fresh air supply, but it isn’t a practical long-term solution. There’s

also the very real issue of external pollution, such as vehicle emissions – particularly for schools located in some urban areas. The solution lies in further investment and tighter guidelines for schools to ensure the protection of pupils’ health and wellbeing. Investing in CO2 sensors and air quality technology allows schools to continuously monitor indoor air quality and adapt the ventilation accordingly. Although the government has begun a £25m initiative to supply over 300,000 CO2 monitors to state-funded facilities, there won’t be enough to cover every classroom. Moving monitors around is not a viable solution, as this can lead to inaccurate readings. What's more, indoor air quality must be monitored over a sustained period. At Plasma Clean, we've partnered with the air monitoring company Airthings, to deliver air quality technology to the education sector. This includes nondispersive infrared sensors (NDIR) to monitor indoor air quality (these are recommended by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers). As well as monitoring CO2 levels, the sensors assess temperature, humidity, radon, VOCs, pressure, light and virus risk – all in real time. When a problem is discovered, the right solution can be found. Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) improves indoor air quality and reduces the risk of airborne infections. It's a proven technology, used by schools for more than 80 years. From the hallway to the classroom, it is effective for old and new buildings. Upper room UVC can provide up to 20 air changes per hour in comparison to mechanical ventilation, which generates between two and four changes per hour. What matters here is the impact: improved air quality has been shown to improve performance and cognitive function – and support young people's health and wellbeing. In addition, it's a vital means to limit the potential for airborne infections. It's time for the nation's schools to tackle this issue head on because all parents have the right to know that their child’s health and education are not being impacted by poor air quality.
