consider myself to have one of the best working environments of any sales and marketing manager. I am constantly reminded when I show potential clients round the Ware Priory estate what a beautiful building and picturesque grounds we have. Coupled with the most professional team that I work with, I can be reassured that I am selling our venue with the utmost integrity. Ware Priory is a picturesque Grade I listed building, founded in 1338, offering a variety of character rooms, comprising historic features in a beautiful setting. Additionally, our Riverside Suite is the most recent addition to our estate, featuring a large and contemporary space. Located on Ware High Street, Ware Priory is easily accessible for East Hertfordshire and West Essex. The views, however, which overlook the River Lea and the seven acres of landscaped gardens, transport you to a tranquil and romantic, countryside setting, perfect for any wedding, celebration or meeting time away from the office. I have had the pleasure of working at Ware Priory for nearly 15 years and in that time have welcomed so many of the Ware and Hertfordshire community to a variety of events. What’s lovely is that local people have loved Ware Priory for being the focal part of the town – many have grown up visiting the grounds and attending the community events organised by Ware Town Council. In several cases, I have been contacted by couples that may have held their wedding with us and then a few years later return to book their first child’s christening celebrations with us too. If you are planning an event then I would love to hear from you and arrange to show you round our beautiful venue.

R ACES The Herts 10k is back this year, a huge event for the county and charity Hertfordshire's legendary 10K race returns to Rothamsted Research in Harpenden after two years as a virtual event due to Covid-19 restrictions. Since its inception in 2006, over 18,000 people have taken part in this popular community run, which has raised a whopping £1,623,924 for local charity Rennie Grove Hospice Care, helping it to provide specialist care and support for adults and children with a life-limiting illness. Voted one of the top 30 races in the country, it is famed for its community spirit and camaraderie, with many taking part in fancy dress and runners of all abilities enjoying a memorable occasion.

Tracey Hancock, Director of Fundraising at Rennie Grove, says there are big plans for this year's comeback event: "As one of the most popular local events, we are delighted to welcome back the crowds and supporters. There will be a festival feel to mark its return, with lots of entertainment and food and drink to enjoy before, during and after the race. Come along, support your friends and family, and be a part of this legendary event." The race isn’t until 9 October, but you can enter now at Herts10K.com to take advantage of the early bird offer of £20 per runner and includes an official t-shirt, chip timing and finishers medal. "Without the support of the community taking part in these sorts of events, we would not be able to continue to provide specialist end-of-life care in people's homes, making every moment matter to the very end," adds Hancock.

SMILETIME TEETH WHITENING KIT

Time to

smile

Having impressed in the latest series of BBC’s Dragons’ Den, Radlett-raised teeth-whitening entrepreneur Natalie Quail is proving a smile is worth a thousand words By REBECCA PITCAIRN

T

ax lawyer turned teeth-whitening entrepreneur Natalie Quail is not the easiest woman to get hold of. It takes some time to pin her down for an interview, but when we do manage to speak, slap bang in the middle of National Smile Month, she is cool, calm and collected – it’s exactly how she came across during her appearance on Dragons’ Den. It’s been an incredibly busy few months for the 31-year-old, ever since she appeared on the latest series of the of BBC show in February and secured investment from two of the multi-millionaire dragons. While entrepreneurs who enter the den get a chance to pitch in front of the five dragons – Deborah Meaden, Peter Jones, Sara Davies, Steven Bartlett and Touker Suleyman – they aren’t told in advance if they have made the cut. “Even when you are called to pitch, there’s no guarantee you will be shown, although if you do secure offers from the dragons it is more likely,” Quail tells me. “I literally found out I was going to be featured on the night of the show, along with everyone else watching!”

14

Quail entered the den looking for £50,000 investment in return for 2 per cent of her business, SmileTime, which sells oral care products. While she captivated the dragons with her smile and business acumen, her valuation did not go down so well, with Suleyman declaring he ‘wouldn’t get out of bed for 2 per cent’. However, the retail magnate, who has already invested in a number of dentistrybased business on the show, did make an offer, along with social media mogul Bartlett, who was equally impressed with Quail’s pitch. After some negotiation, she secured both dragons, who agreed to split the investment in return for 10 per cent of the business each, although that deal, she admits, has still not yet been finalised. Quail, who grew up in Radlett and attended Haberdashers' School in Elstree, set up SmileTime towards the end of 2019, while living in London. However, when lockdown hit the following year, she moved back to her family home in the village, and together with her parents – themselves dentists who run The Maltings Dental Surgery in St Albans – built the brand. “We literally built the business from the basement of their house, packing and sending out

orders while we were locked down and right through the pandemic,” Quail says. Formerly an international tax lawyer, Quail had the idea for SmileTime after struggling to find affordable results-driven oral care products that fit as easily into her self-care routine as skincare does. “As a teenager, growing up in Hertfordshire, I felt very insecure and definitely lacked confidence,” Quail explains. “I started working summers in my parents’ dental practice and so became very interested in my smile from an early age and, when I got my teeth whitened for the first time, I started to get compliments about my

smile, which gave me a massive confidence boost. When I felt confident about my smile, I felt confident about going on a date, doing a presentation or acing an interview. “Fast forward a few years and, as an international tax lawyer working really long hours, I had zero time to fit in trips to the dentist to get my teeth whitened. So, I started to look online to see what I could do at home as part of my self-care routine. I found that even though there were a lot of teeth whitening products out there, it was really difficult to determine which were safe, good quality and not cause sensitivity so I set about developing a brand that reflected all those things.” With hundreds, if not thousands of cosmetic whitening brands on the market, it wasn’t an easy task. However, thanks to her family’s background in dentistry, she has been able to offer products backed with over 30 years of dental expertise.

SmileTime is now the fastest growing premium oral cosmetics and at-home teeth whitening brand based in UK, is set to make £2.5 million in revenue this year and is the only UK online care brand that is partnered with a nationwide dental chain. “Moving forward, we want SmileTime to be a holistic one-stop-shop for all things smile care,” she adds. And, while negotiations are still ongoing, Quail believes the whole Dragons’ Den experience has been well worth it. “I would encourage any entrepreneur, if they are at the right stage in their business, to apply for the show,” she says. “It’s quite a hostile environment to go into, in terms of defending your business, and you need to know your business inside out, but it helps focus your mind and it certainly makes any conversation you might have with future investors a hell of a lot easier!”

Q What originally inspired you to launch Career Masterclass? A I was in a senior global role at a bank with a team of 50+ and as I reflected on my journey through all organisations I had worked at, I realised how few people there were around me who looked like me. I started to question the lack of ethnically diverse representation in senior roles and was concerned by how many ethnically diverse colleagues came to me for advice on how I got the roles I did as a Black woman. I am a problem solver and I realised I wanted to make a change in the world to do something about this. I set up Career Masterclass to help hard-working Black and ethnically diverse professionals to land higher on the career ladder regardless of background, circumstances or identity. It comes from my belief in mentorship, that the secrets of career growth should be available to everyone, and that anyone from any background can build a successful career. Our journey is unique as I did not set out for Career Masterclass to be a business. It started as a direct response to the shocking statistics of Black progression in corporate organisations. The growth was organic and the evolution to the EdTech platform that it is today as a result of glowing feedback from the community on the efficacy and uniqueness of our content. Q What do you offer through Career Masterclass? A Career Masterclass equips ethnically diverse professionals with the practical tools needed to advance in their careers. We are aiming to level the playing field and give under-represented and underserved groups the resources and access to the opportunities of today, and those of the future.

CULTURE • PROFILE SHE HAS LIVED IN ST ALBANS FOR OVER 14 YEARS

We started as a non-profit organisation offering monthly webinars and the annual STRETCH career conference (now in its sixth year) to empower ethnically diverse professionals, but we have grown to include masterclasses, resources and mentor-matching on a dynamic online learning platform. The platform has a wide range of content and tools, from practical advice to help individuals apply for new job opportunities or succeed in securing promotions, to unprecedented access to industry experts sharing their invaluable knowledge and lessons learnt during their careers. We have built a thriving community of 23,000 members globally and have worked with over 15 leading organisations, such as HSBC, Credit Suisse, Ella’s Kitchen, Inmarsat and NatWest. This year, we also fully launched our enterprise suite of services to cater to the growing interest of businesses seeking high-impact, award-winning interventions to improve their attraction and retention strategies for diverse talent. The offerings include talent accelerator programmes, enterprise platform access, specialist recruitment for mid and senior levels, content licensing, and more.

SHE ENJOYS VISITING CHRISTOPHER PLACE

THE DELIGHTS OF THE WAFFLE HOUSE

“It's a call to keep touching the lives of others” Q You have made many different power lists over the last few years. What does this mean to you? A It feels great to be acknowledged for all the effort. But more importantly, it is a call to keep touching the lives of others, to keep speaking out for under-represented career professionals and to keep growing as a person. It is also a reminder to stay true to the values that have brought me this far. I am grateful for mentors, coaches, family and friends who have been instrumental in my growth. Q Do you get much time to enjoy the St Albans area? A Absolutely! From taking drives, going on walks or even visiting my local gym, I find the time to take in the greenery, the serenity and the beauty of the area. Q How long have you lived in St Albans for and what do you love about it? A I have lived here for over 14 years and I love many things about it. When I had to go to the City daily, it was just the perfect distance from London to make the commute bearable. I love the mix of the old and new – history running through

its streets, parks to wander through, quaint buildings, food and drink for every taste and interesting places to shop. It’s also a great place to raise a family. Q If you had to pick three places you love visiting in the area – and these could be restaurants, outside spots, shops etc – where would they be? A I would choose Verulamium Park, Christopher Place and The Waffle House. Q With summer approaching, do you have many outdoor spots in and around St Albans you love visiting? A I’m definitely looking forward to summer! I’ll be visiting some of my favourite spots – Splash Park, Greenwood Park, Chiswell Green and St Albans City Centre Market. Q What’s next for you? A The life of an entrepreneur is always

busy! Over the next three years, we are hoping to continue to scale our impact across different continents and continue to help professionals thrive at work using technology as an enabler of career development and growth. We are also working to expand our list of top businesses who want to improve their strategies for attracting, developing and retaining ethnically diverse talent, making sure their staff are empowered to do great work, regardless of what background they are from. careermasterclass.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

IAN BAULSH, LEFT, AND MARTIN ROBINSON AT YE OLDE FIGHTING COCKS

A NEW

CHAPTER

Martin Robinson was working at the Ye Olde Fighting Cocks when it was announced it was closing down – so took matters into his own hands By MARK KEBBLE

hen news filtered through earlier this year that St Albans’ historic pub, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, was to cease trading, us like many were devastated. This was a venue that had its foundations laid back in the 8th century, and has featured in the Guinness Book of Records as Britain’s oldest pub, so to hear it would be no more was tough to hear. But, luckily, there were existing staff who felt the same. “I was devastated,” nods Martin Robinson, “as was Ian, the head chef. We thought it was the end of the road. But then some business-minded friends asked the question: ‘why don’t you take it over?’ and for the first time we started thinking about whether it was possible.” Robinson admits the toughest part of the whole process was getting a deal to take over the pub across the line, but his team felt confident. “We’ve worked here for a decade already, so we know how to run the place and we knew our customers would come back,” he says. “Pubs are a really important part of the community, and Ye Olde Fighting Cocks A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

has been at the heart of this community for over 1,000 years. We have our regulars, we have people who happen to wander past and pop in for a bite to eat, and we also have people who travel here to see the country’s oldest pub and soak up that heritage.” With a deal in place, Robinson – along with his management team of the aforementioned Ian Baulsh, the head chef, and Sam Walker – got to work on improvements ahead of re-opening. “We did a lot of work,” Robinson says. “We painted the whole of the outside of the pub, and replaced the pub signs with brand new hand-painted versions, complete with gold leaf. We transformed our raised garden, adding the new outside BBQ kitchen, a bar and also a little grass-laid children’s area complete with mini tree-stump tables and chairs. We have increased the seating capacity in the garden to around 200 covers, and trimmed and tidied our trees and foliage, so the view of the lake [in Verulamium Park] has

“The pub has been at the heart of the community for over 1,000 years” opened up and is visible to almost everyone in the garden area. Inside we have painted and decorated, cleaned extensively, repaired and varnished furniture, and recently completely replaced the ladies’ and gents’ toilets. We had planned to get to this point in about six months from opening, but are four months early only because of the huge vote of confidence we have received from the public.” With Baulsh heavily involved behind the scenes, unsurprisingly the food offer has been key too. “Ian is an incredible chef,” smiles Robinson, “and he has created a menu with THE OUTDOOR AREA IS A POPULAR SPOT IN ST ALBANS

something for everyone. We’re very proud of our fish and chips and our chicken wings, both of which are extremely popular with our customers, and of the balance of meat, vegetarian and also vegan dishes. Ian is also committed to changing things up a lot with regularly changing specials, and we try to source locally as much as possible.” With summer here, it’s also the best time to sample the new outdoor BBQ kitchen. “We think it’s the best spot in Hertfordshire to have a bite to eat and cold drink,” Robinson asserts. “We are situated just a stone’s throw from St Albans Cathedral and we are on the edge of Verulamium Park. So, we are surrounded by parkland and greenery, as well as the historic Cathedral on one side and Roman ruins in the park on the other. We also offer a BBQ menu as well as our regular menu, which has dishes like harissa chicken thighs, jumbo tiger prawns, Merguez sausages and grilled halloumi. We hope our pub is the place to be this summer.” Considering we all thought we had lost Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, Absolutely Hertfordshire couldn’t agree more. Fried halloumi and chickpea rainbow salad feeds 2 as a main

Definitely make this! It’s also delicious stuffed into a wrap, or serve it with rice or quinoa. Halloumi needs to be served straight away, so make this fresh. Swap the halloumi for paneer, or use extra-firm tofu, patted dry, for a plant-based version of this dish. Prepare the salad and arrange in two bowls. 15 mins

INGREDIENTS • 2 tbsp ghee or coconut oil • 400g tin of chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 4 tsp garam masala • 2 tsp ground cumin • 225g halloumi, cut into small cubes • 2 tsp maple syrup • Sea salt and pepper Salad • A little diced red onion or chopped spring onions • 1 large carrot, scrubbed and roughly grated • 1 handful of diced ripe tomatoes Cashew-coriander-mint chutney makes double • 4 tbsp cashews or other nuts • 4 handfuls of fresh coriander • 2 small handful of fresh mint leaves • 2 fresh green chilli, deseeded if you prefer, chopped, or a good pinch of chilli flakes • 1 tsp ground cumin • Juice of 3 limes • 4 tbsp olive oil

METHOD 1 Heat up a large frying pan and toast the cashews for the chutney on a medium heat for 3–4 minutes, tossing halfway through, until lightly golden, then tip half of them into the small bowl of a food processor and save the rest for garnishing. 2 Put the pan back on the heat, melt 1 ½ tablespoons of the ghee and fry the chickpeas (making sure they are dried well in a tea towel before so they don’t spit in the hot oil) on a medium heat for 4 minutes with half of the spices and a pinch of salt, stirring every now and then. Tip into a bowl, scraping out the delicious bits from the bottom of the pan as you go. 3 While the chickpeas are frying, add all the other chutney ingredients

to the food processor – saving a few herbs for garnishing, if you like – along with about 3 tablespoons of water, then blend together, seasoning to taste with salt and pepper. 4 Put the pan back on the heat with the rest of the ghee and, when melted, fry the halloumi on a medium heat for about 2 minutes on the first side (keep the pieces of halloumi spaced out) and then turn, sprinkle over the rest of the spices and fry for about 1 minute on the other side until lightly golden brown and crispy at the edges. Straight away add the fried chickpeas and the maple syrup, then toss together with the halloumi and fry for 30 seconds so that the chickpeas warm through and the maple syrup bubbles and thickens. Scatter the chickpeas over the bowls of salad with the halloumi on top, drizzle over half of the chutney and top with the remaining nuts.

Big broccoli and spinach salad with carrotginger dressing feeds 2

A favourite lunchbox salad of mine, and happily this makes extra dressing, so drizzle over roast veg and noodles. I love carrot-ginger soup in the winter, and carrot-ginger dressing is one of my go-tos in the warmer months. It’s inspired by a Japanese dressing, the white miso paste giving it a beautifully salty-sweet umami flavour. Swap the cooked chickpeas for lentils or other beans, if you like. 15 minutes (25 minutes if cooking the quinoa)

INGREDIENTS • 1 large handful of bite-sized broccoli florets, stems sliced thinly • 100g baby spinach • 400g tin of chickpeas, drained, rinsed and dried • 1 handful of cherry tomatoes (I like a mix of colours), halved • About 150g cooked quinoa or brown rice (about 80g uncooked – see tip) • 1 handful of seeds (such as pumpkin or sunflower), toasted, to serve dressing makes extra • 2 medium carrots, scrubbed (about 200g) • 2 tbsp chopped fresh ginger • 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

• 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil • 1 small white onion or 3 spring onions • 3 tbsp rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar • 2 tbsp white miso paste • Sea salt

METHOD 1 Steam the broccoli for 4–5 minutes in a small pan until just tender. You can do this by putting a small amount of water with a little pinch of salt in a pan so that it covers the bottom by about half an inch, and cooking the broccoli in it with a lid on the pan. 2 Place all the ingredients for the dressing – except the salt – in a high powered blender or a food processor and blend until smooth, then season with salt to taste. If your blender isn’t high-powered, roughly grate the carrots and ginger first before adding them to the blender with the rest of the ingredients. Add about 4 tablespoons of water to the dressing to make it drizzly; it is a thick dressing, but add more water to thin it out further if you fancy. 3 Toss all the salad ingredients together, drizzle over about half of the dressing and scatter over the seeds. Serve any extra dressing on the side and keep the rest in a clean screw-top jar in the fridge.

Tip To prepare the quinoa from scratch, cook it following the packet instructions and, in the last 4 minutes, add the broccoli florets to sit on top. Remove from the heat and leave the lid on for 3 minutes. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Mum’s Filipino chicken with mangotomato salsa feeds 4

My mum calls this ‘any way chicken’ because you can make the chicken any way: I like cooking it in the oven (so I can forget about it); my mum likes to make it on the hob (to keep more of the sauce); and my boyfriend Henry likes grilling it on the barbecue (so it’s smoky and crispy). However you do it, I recommend making extra so that you can shred it into soups, wraps, noodles and salads later in the week. This sauce is fantastic in its own right and you can use it with vegetables too. If you have time to marinate the chicken in the sauce overnight, go for it, but I often forget and just cook it straight away. 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS • 4 large chicken thighs, skin on and bone in (about 600g) • Sea salt and black pepper • 2 spring onions, finely sliced at an angle, to serve Filipino-style sauce • 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 4 tbsp apple cider vinegar • 2 tbsp tamari or soy sauce • 2 tsp–1 tbsp fish sauce or 2 tsp extra tamari or soy sauce • 2 tbsp (coconut) sugar or maple syrup • 2 star anise • ¼ tsp chilli flakes (or to taste) Mango-tomato salsa • 1 big handful of fresh coriander • 100g cherry tomatoes, quarterd • 100g peeled ripe mango, pineapple or stone fruit, diced • 2cm fresh ginger, finely grated • ½ garlic clove, finely grated • 1 jalapeño or other chilli, deseeded and diced • Juice of 1½ limes • 4 spring onions or 1 small red onion, finely diced • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil • A dash of hot sauce (optional)

30

METHOD Preheat the oven to fan 220°C/gas mark 9. If using a barbecue, get it going now. 2 Mix all the sauce ingredients together. Place the chicken thighs in an ovenproof dish big enough to arrange the pieces about 2cm apart (but not so big that you lose all the sauce as it cooks off in the oven), then add the sauce, coating each piece of chicken well in the mixture and leave for a few minutes, if you like. 3 Place the chicken thighs skinside up in the dish, sprinkle a little salt and pepper over each one and roast for 25 minutes or until well cooked and the juices run clear when pierced with a knife. 4 Meanwhile, make the salsa. Roughly chop the leaves of the coriander and finely chop the 1

stalks, then add to a serving bowl with all the other ingredients, mix together well and leave to sit for 20 minutes (while the chicken is cooking). Serve the chicken scattered with the spring onions and with the salsa on the side.

Q How did Lift Your Spirits come about? A An opportunity came along at an events

management company with a brilliant lady that I truly admire. The outlook looked good; all was on track until we hit February 2020. As we all know, hospitality suffered, and I had to rethink my options. I found a lockdown position with Perfect Moment Florist as I was getting restless by not working; they were wonderful. I started thinking about what I could sell as I was delivering flowers? A friend, Sarah, was thinking the same. We knew each other as our Dads were business partners. The company was a bar supplies business, but was sold over 30 years ago. However, we still had contact with the company, so we thought of ‘home bar’ gifts in lockdown. We spoke to the CEO of the company – and then Lift Your Spirits began.

Q From day one, what did

you want to offer?

A The ‘Lift Your Spirits’ name

had more meaning than different drinking spirits. It was about a gift that would truly lift your spirits. We would start with the home bar and continue growing our range. We could become

R E A S O N S T O B E C H E E R F U L Herts local, Faye Penford, explains the thinking behind Lift Your Spirits and why she’s on a mission to make people happy creative with our gifts. We had a unique collection of cocktail shakers, Art Deco, French, and Boston Classic Shakers. We were able to collaborate with other companies. We were only small, but it was growing and developing well. There were struggles, but we could work around them as the company was small and it was easy to adapt. We started to have a brilliant interaction with communities on social media. The love for home bar life, amazing mixologists and cocktails ideas were endless. My love of cocktails began to grow even more for me. The company had a significant change after just nine months. The partnership together was not possible for many reasons, and we had to make a decision that resulted in me going ‘solo’ with Lift Your Spirits.

Q Where would you like to take

Lift Your Spirits from here?

A I would like to attend more social events;

I love the interaction at the bar. Many new and unique ideas are coming together which is significant for my business.

Q Whereabouts are you

based in Hertfordshire?

A I am based and live in London Colney. I

have to give credit to London Colney Parish Council, as they have been exceptional; they have the empathy to help new and small businesses. When I thought my license was incorrect, they put me straight and stopped me from worrying, which can happen when you know you need something to continue your business and help it grow. There is a lot to be said about what is around you locally and the people that care for the community.

HEALTH & BEAUTY • PROFILE SHE OFFERS PERSONAL TRAINING SESSIONS TOO

MICHELLE BAYNHAM

Q What originally inspired you to launch Mother Fit? A With two girls, born 18 months apart, I found myself struggling after the birth of my second daughter, and was diagnosed with postnatal depression. The ‘juggle struggle’ of two children so close in age, a house renovation, and keeping up with everyday tasks became too much, and I turned to exercise as my one constant, and a way in which to carve out some ‘me’ time in our very busy schedule. As a result, I found this not only helped me physically, but worked wonders for my mental health. Believing it’s essential to get moving whatever stage of pregnancy or motherhood you’re in, I was shocked to find little to no resources online to help. So, taking knowledge as a qualified pre and postnatal personal trainer, and my desire to offer pregnant and new mums the same escapism and meditation element of exercise that inspired me, Mother Fit was born! Q What did you want to offer? A I wanted to offer a truly affordable resource to all women. Driven by my own experience of motherhood, I am able to connect and relate to every Mother Fit member. I wanted Mother Fit to be more MOTHER FIT OFFERS A HOST OF ONLINE CLASSES

than just exercise, I wanted it to be filled with knowledge and resources to make life just that little bit easier. Also providing a safe space within a private community for women to join and share experiences, workout together and champion each other as they navigate the tricky path that is parenthood. Q Why do you think we need a platform like this? A Women need looking after. There is nothing quite like this on the market, specifically targeting mums and mums to be. Mum gets forgotten once baby arrives and I’m here to make sure she’s looked after through her whole journey. Q What different aspects are part of Mother Fit today? A Members on their pregnancy journey will enjoy a weekly program tailored to the week of their pregnancy, including fitness classes such as weights, cardio, Pilates and yoga, plus live interactive sessions. Antenatal care such as hypnobirthing, mindfulness, as well as expert content, resources, and weekly updates on their baby’s development. Members on their postpartum journey begin in the 4th trimester with support for mum and her new baby, and once cleared medically to return to exercise she’ll enjoy a gentle ‘Rebuild you Core’ program, and a daily 9-week postpartum program bursting with fitness, mindfulness, mobility, expert content such as first aid for under ones, and resources to support her and her baby’s journey. Members on their ‘beyond’ journey will experience a dashboard bursting with live sessions, challenges, programs, hundreds of fitness classes, nutrition, mindfulness, experts, long c-section recovery, and more. They will also be able to personalise their goals for weight loss or getting strong, track calories, workouts, buddy up, and more.

Q How important is the online community to mothers out there? A Community and connectivity with women on the same journey is key to boosting your mood and alleviating any feelings of loneliness. This is why we are so proud of the private Mother Fit community we have created, where mums at every stage of their parenting journey come together to motivate and champion each other along the way. From sharing healthy recipes, top tips on how to get a baby to sleep, and advice on dealing with lack of sleep – the Mother Fit community is there. Q How long have you lived in Hertford and what do you love about it? A I’ve lived in Hertford since November 2014, we moved here a week before my second daughter was born. Our house was previously a bed & breakfast – needless to say, it needed a bit of work and refurbishment and having two children under two was extremely challenging at times. ereia Skincare is a brand new vegan bodycare range designed to help women of all ages feel good inside and out. The brand wants to change the narrative when it comes to skincare routines and get more people to start nourishing the skin on our bodies as well as on our faces. Created in lockdown by Charlotte Flather, who has many years’ experience in the beauty industry working for brands including Clarins and Clinique, the range is inspired by her and her late mother’s love of the sea. In fact, Sereia takes its name from the Portuguese word for mermaid. The products are packed with powerful marine nutrients including seaweed extract and sea buckthorn

Introducing Sereia Skincare, a brand powered by the sea and all set to nourish your body oil. Rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, they are designed to leave bodies toned, nourished, hydrated and with a healthy, natural glow. Charlotte says: “I have taken care to develop a range of effective skin nourishing products and tools, to empower women of all ages to take ownership of their skin concerns in a way that feels true to them. I want women to start loving the real skin they are in. “I’ve focused initially on bodycare because I want to encourage more of us to think about the importance of caring for the skin on our bodies, as well as on our faces. While the majority of us have set facial skincare routines, we don’t know how to look after our skin from the chin down, but the body needs attention and nourishment to thrive.” With the mantra ‘Feel Good in your Real Skin’, Sereia’s also promoting

the importance of self-care and body positivity. It has created easy rituals, including a 60 Second Spa, to help an increasing number of women who have developed home skincare routines in lockdown to support both their mental and physical wellbeing. Charlotte adds: “I believe that beauty starts from the inside out. Every life experience settles somewhere in our body so we need to take care of it. The accumulation of mental, emotional and physical stress can be treated by routine self-care rituals and this is the ethos behind Sereia. I want to help women see that the time we spend on ourselves is invaluable to our mental health, self-esteem and confidence.” There are currently nine products and tools in the brand new range, available to buy now at sereiaskincare.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

he new TANDi luxury tanning brush is a woman owned brand. It was designed by a selfproclaimed tan aficionado who was looking for a better way to apply fake tan to the contours of the face and body. The brush is a chunky, high gloss wonder that can be used to get a flawless natural looking glow with your favourite fake tan or body makeup. The TANDi has already gained the attention of celebrity makeup artists and beauty experts, and is a must have product for your makeup bag this summer. The densely packed bristles hold lotion and mousse on the surface of the brush with less absorption, meaning that more of the product adheres to the skin, giving better coverage from the first layer. A long, wipe clean, glossy handle helps to prevent tell-tale stains on the hands during application. The large flat brush head feels velvety to the touch and allows for a smooth application of product onto the skin. The luxury tanning brush allows you to buff tan into the skin for a natural looking, blended result. The TANDi is also stain resistant and is made with cruelty free materials. The TANDi makes the application of fake tan quick, easy and mess free. It works wonders on facial contours, hairline, neck, chest, ears, hands, wrists, knees, feet, ankles, armpits, tummy button and bikini line.

ARE YOU

SUMMER READY?

It can take more than just losing weight to feel good in a swim suit, Dr Kim prescribes some quick-fix treatments that can help boost your confidence

muscle contractions and radiofrequency, leading to the required combination of skin tightening, fat breakdown and lymphatic drainage. The Penrose Clinic signature programme combines these machines with a home treatment regimen that uses clinically proven ingredients.

TONE AND DEFINE

REDUCE REDNESS AND SCARRING

SHRINK AND TIGHTEN YOUR MUMMY TUMMY

Acne on the face, chest or back can leave redness and purple marks that can linger in the affected area for years, often long after the actual acne has cleared. This inflammation can be managed with RF micro-needling which gives the additional benefit of reducing the scarring. Your doctor might also advise the addition of fractionated laser or radiofrequency treatments to improve these results.

The BTL Emsculpt supramaximal contractions of the abdominal muscles have been demonstrated in clinical studies to reduce post-pregnancy diastasis – the gap in the fascia between your stomach muscles that just won’t close. VoluDerm, micro-needling, TriFractional radiofrequency, and LED phototherapy, are all excellent treatments for the management of stretch marks and skin laxity after pregnancy.

Muscle toning technologies can help you achieve more efficient fat loss and muscle definition and are highly effective in those who are struggling to lose resistant weight around their middle. A 30-minute BTL Emsculpt Neo treatment on the abdomen is the equivalent of doing 20,000 stomach crunches at 100% capacity, with an average fat loss of 30%. It will give you a definite confidence boost when it comes time to take your shirt off.

REMOVE SKIN TAGS OR UNWANTED SKIN LESIONS

SMOOTH AND TONE CELLULITE

Skin tags and unsightly actinic keratoses can be easily and painlessly removed with cryotherapy. The medical CryoPen is a precision instrument that uses a fine jet of nitrous oxide at high pressure. Unlike the more traditional methods, it can be used to remove unwanted benign skin lesions with minimal risk of scarring or damage to the surrounding skin. The treatment only takes a few minutes although in some cases, a repeat treatment may be required.

Cellulite is a perfectly normal occurrence in over 90% of women, whether they are skinny or overweight. It is difficult to get rid of cellulite permanently, but for those who are bothered by it, the really good news is that some recent introductions to the market have created a buzz of excitement. Not all of these new treatments have reached the UK as yet, but LipoFirm PRO and Emsculpt Neo are increasingly available here. Both machines combine powerful

“Signals of change in your hair or scalp could indicate that your inner health is compromised”

ROOT OF THE PROBLEM

When you experience any form of change within your body, from a simple common cold, to weight change, lifestyle changes and many more, your blood will support your organs first to maintain life, and maintain health to a normal level, as we know it. However, your hair, skin and nails are not considered an essential organ – believe it or not we can survive without hair, or problem skin and nails. With this in mind you should be aware of the signals of change that your hair and scalp may demonstrate – it could indicate that your inner health is compromised. For your personal in depth consultation please contact Ciente hair health spa. Our front of house directors will guide you through all procedures and protocols to arrange a meeting with our in house senior Trichologist.

Your hair can tell a lot about a person – even if there are some underlying health issues

I

By TRISHA BULLER

t often amazes me how people in general have very little understanding about their hair, its complexities and construction, yet it’s the one thing we look at everyday of our lives. It can make or break your mood, and even ruin your day! It can create confidence, make you feel a million dollars or a total mess. So why do you think this is? Well over the past 46 years of my experience as a “hair whisperer”, I’ve come to realise it’s because a large percentage of hairdressers completely undermine their skill and knowledge of hair and its

complexity. With the knowledge, and guidance of a true professional your hair can be your crowning glory. Hair is a complex chain of amino acids that are made up of protein. It grows from within a hair follicle attached to a bulb deep within the dermis of the skin, and attached to this hair bulb are tiny capillaries and nerve endings. These tiny capillaries carry oxygen minerals and essential vitamins to maintain healthy hair growth, while the nerve endings form part of the adrenal glands, which control our nervous system.

m Bathach is part of a traditional working croft where Hebridean Sheep can be seen grazing and running on the surrounding hills of heather. The cottage is part of an extensive refurbishment carried out on the original cow barn using traditional stonework and cedar logs from Pioneer Log Homes of Canada. Tastefully decorated using local tweeds and traditional furnishings complemented by modern appliances used in a contemporary way. The area is world renowned for its stunning scenery, wildlife, food and drink and friendly local communities. Not so well known is the low rainfall and mild climate due to the Atlantic Gulf Stream, with glorious summers and beautiful long sunsets throughout the year. The dark sky is a stunning sight with the stars clearly visible, particularly here in Altass. The cottage is situated in the small hamlet of Rosehall which is surrounded by magnificent salmon fishing rivers and trout lochs, woodland walks and a welcoming local hotel serving delicious food. A perfect base for touring, being based midway between west, north and east coasts, where the varied coastline is a magnet for wildlife and birdwatching.

ONE OF THE POPULAR SPIRAL SCULPTURES

We catch up with Charles Elliott, founder of Elliott of London in Berkhamsted, to discover how you can bring his sculptures into your own home Q How have things been going at Elliott of

London since we featured you last year? A It's been pretty productive here. We've had time to be creative and keep pushing the sculpture boundaries – we've been lucky to explore lots of new locations on some of our installs and we've also teamed up with a few new outlets across

“We've had time to be creative and keep pushing the boundaries”

the UK, which enables us to showcase our sculptures far and wide for everyone to enjoy. We've launched our new website and we are loving being able to be more interactive with new and old clients – being able to share our blogs really helps us tell the stories of our sculptures. We’ve also collaborated our Bronze Sculpture range with our other sculptures meaning it all much easier to see and find. Q What have been the new, big

sculptures you have worked on?

A We have super exciting sculptures that we

are working on at the moment and all will soon be revealed – bigger is better, but that's all I can say for now! We also had the honour

of working alongside two big companies producing some stunning public art, which will soon be placed in Hertfordshire. Q Is there a particular design that

is in real demand right now?

A We are finding that our Spheres and

Spirals are really popular. With a larger range of sizes and patinations including the wonderful new matte black and copper patina, we are able to provide a really wide spectrum to all of our clients, which can suit anyone's garden or outdoor spaces. The flexibility of all of our sculptures being totally handmade in our Hertfordshire studio means that you as a customer can really have and get exactly what you want.

72

Q With summer here, what pieces

do you create that can be perfect for a Hertfordshire home? A We love all of our art, but for home gardens we believe any of the sculptures with illumination kits really do provide that something extra to every garden we install in. Even just one of our Watching Fox sculptures with uplighting can bring a garden to life – or a statement piece like one of our Verdigris & Golds Spheres will give that extra edge. The fire pits and planters are always a winner in the summer months as we all just love those summer evenings and our gardens so we tend to see a few more of those head out the studio doors.

“For home gardens we believe any of the sculptures with illumination kits really provide something extra” Q What are your plans for

the rest of the year?

A We've got a few tricks up our sleeves for

this year and lots of exciting commission sculptures to start, along with a piece of public art for Hertford very soon – we also have a wedding to organise here, so it’s all very exciting and busy!

“They pride themselves on creating one off unique spaces that are affordable and sensibly priced”

FIVE STAR SERVICE Cloisters Design offer their top tips for planning your new kitchen

C

loisters Design is a fourth-generation familyrun business offering affordable bespoke kitchens and furniture for every room in your home. They have a comprehensive range of products from a multitude of suppliers as well as their furniture handcrafted locally. All of their custom-made furniture is truly and completely bespoke, meaning they can tailor it to your individual desires creating unique one-off spaces that you can be proud to call your home. Planning a new kitchen? Here are their five top tips:

you’re extending your home or renovating an existing space, having the time and energy to fully immerse yourself into the process is essential. Kitchens today have an overwhelming number of decisions and choices that need to be made, from the style of the furniture right down to where your cutlery will be stored. Their made to order kitchens add another layer of complexity as the possibilities are endless – but don’t worry, they are here to guide you through the process. They like to see their clients as early as they can, so don’t worry if you don’t have planning permission or a builder – they are always keen to sit down and start the conversation. They are currently planning many projects due to start in 2023.

START EARLY

VISIT MORE THAN ONE

The first – and probably the most important – tip is to start as soon as you can! Whether

They know that they aren’t for everyone! Most of their clients will visit more than one

kitchen showroom – they highly recommend this. Kitchen companies will have different priorities and ways of working. Most of their clients will sit down with at least two – and sometimes three – different kitchen companies. They think this is important as it helps determine who is best suited for you and your needs. They pride themselves on creating one off unique spaces that are affordable and sensibly priced.

DISCUSS BUDGET Honesty is the best policy. People are often apprehensive to share budgets. Sometimes, this is because clients don’t know how much things cost – and why would you if this is your first kitchen project for some time. They always make sure they spend some time in their first consultation giving you an idea of how much things cost. They

also have a price guide on their website. As designers it's far too easy to get carried away with the many niceties that you can spend your money on. Both the designer and you certainly don’t want to be wasting each other’s time. So, if you can, give your kitchen company a rough budget.

PRIORITISE

“There is an overwhelming amount of choice out there. The determining factor for choosing your style should be your house”

What is most important to you in your kitchen? The next tip is to think about how your kitchen is used. Most of us aren’t Michelin Star chefs! Do you like cooking for instance? It’s okay if you don’t. Do you host large parties and require lots of seating? Does your kitchen need to be dog and child friendly? These key questions will help determine where your priorities lie and help allocate your budget across a kitchen’s main three areas: furniture, appliances, and worktops. At Cloisters, they will always make sure they get these key questions answered.

DESIGN & STYLE Time for the fun bit! There is an overwhelming amount of choice and styles out there these days and sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. The first thing they recommend doing is looking at lots of kitchen images to start determining what you do and don’t like. Sometimes it’s easier to start with things you don’t like. Their inspiration page on their website has a huge selection of projects you can study – they ask clients to look through these and tell them their likes and dislikes. Their Instagram is also a great place to look. The determining factor for choosing your style should be your house! If you live in a barn conversion or in a country setting, then there’s the answer you need – a country kitchen. Alternatively, you may live in a sleek and modern new build – perhaps a handleless kitchen will suit you best. cloistersdesign.co.uk

or those of you who have young children or, indeed, remember when you did, you will recall, very clearly, the pride that you had in their drawings and scribblings on paper. No toddler says that they can’t draw! However, as children grow a little older things can change. Over the years, it has always saddened me when children claim that they can’t draw. What they mean is that they find it hard to create a representative image on paper. Some go on to say that they “don’t like art”. Many years ago, I took a Reception class to the National Gallery to see the Wright of Derby exhibition, as part of a bigger project on Light. I still take joy (and a little bit of pride) in proving some of my colleagues wrong. They didn’t think that five-year-olds would be able to cope with such an exhibition, but the children proved them wrong. They sat cross legged on the floor in front of the paintings, mesmerised by the National Gallery education guide who regaled them with stories, encouraged them to really look at each painting and engage in conversation with her about what they saw. They all loved it. In our Laidlaw Education classrooms, we enjoy all the wisdom and creativity of

“What they all discover is an outlet for exploring emotions” a particularly amazing art teacher – she has just celebrated her 80th birthday. Diana shares her passion for words and art with each child, whatever age, and those who are keen and those who say they don’t like it – or can’t do it! What they all discover is an outlet for exploring their thoughts and emotions. Amazingly, from there emerge wonderful pieces, but it is how they discover a satisfaction and sense of themselves, through Diana’s gentle child-led guidance and teaching that is more important. Adolescent boys who have previously hated creative outlets are a particular triumph. So, we come to July and a time when we are celebrating Children’s Art Week. In fact, it is not a week but three weeks (29 June-19 July), and is a celebration for children of all ages to enjoy. There will be opportunities to participate and discover so much about the world of art – online, at home, and in museums and art galleries. For all children who are naturally drawn to art in any form, this is a bonanza to be explored. However, for your children who utter the words of not liking art, exclaim that they cannot draw or simply show no interest, here is a real opportunity to open up new worlds to them, for each of them to grow in confidence, to find new ways of expressing themselves and connecting with their emotions – or simply having fun. Art is around us everywhere, and I hope that you will have opportunities to explore, with your children, during the course of these exciting weeks.

“Pupils discovering the wilderness here can be hugely exciting” JON GRAY

Trip on the

WILD SIDE

The headmaster of York House School on giving pupils a chance to explore the wilderness of the UK

T

he impact of the global pandemic and the restrictions associated with travelling overseas have led many schools to focus on UK expeditions when planning school trips. Likewise, many families have also discovered over the last couple of years that holidaying in the UK brings with it the opportunity to explore some of the most remarkable landscapes and coastlines – and the beauty of it is, you don’t need to cross seas and oceans to find them. With sustainability and climate education always high on the priority list, there are

many other incentives linked to planning trips to UK destinations. With growing questions being asked in relation to unnecessary and lengthy air travel, not to mention airport chaos and disruptions to flights, an adventure in the UK might be just the ticket. The UK is blessed to be home to many extraordinary landscapes, which are often great locations for wilderness adventures. At my school, we recently set out on a special expedition to the Scottish Highlands, and it was wonderful to witness how inspiring such a trip can be for young children. For pupils, discovering the wilderness within their own country can be hugely exciting and is often unexpected.

TAKING A BOAT TRIP

EXPLORATION AND ADVENTURE The Highlands, in particular, offers a landscape that many first-time visitors are surprised to discover is part of this country rather than something Tolkienesque requiring a long-haul flight to New Zealand. Geology, history and human geography is different in the Highlands to almost anywhere else in the UK. Areas such as Sutherland are in places as sparse of population as a genuine desert, if occasionally a little wetter. For an excursion to be adventurous it needs to show pupils something different, something awe-inspiring, and occasionally something daunting, to remind us of our necessary humility. There are of course many other exceptional locations in the UK that one might like to explore, from the Lakes and Peaks to Snowdonia and Dartmoor, there A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

are many exciting opportunities to explore the wilderness in this country, especially if you are used to living in a fairly built up or heavily populated area. Essentially, exploration and adventure is all about leaving the existing comfort zone because that is what makes it exciting. The “staff jolly” to somewhere hot with a pool is hardly the moral high ground – pupils need to get something from an adventurous trip that their own lives wouldn’t normally provide.

SKILLS AND FRIENDSHIP The people who know themselves best, tend to become the most resilient during these kinds of trips. Part of knowing yourself is about understanding your own character and what makes you tick. But the lessons of identity include history, geography and many other areas of learning. Children will also learn many skills during these kinds of trips. Friendships are deepened by shared experience, the positive

relationships between staff and pupils become all the more meaningful given the chance to “peel the conversational onion” and get to the good stuff. There are practical skills to be learned of course, but it is the character education that is the most important and which comes through so vividly during these expeditions. There are of course a number of aspects to consider when planning a trip like this. The three key strands to mitigating risk for wilderness trips are supervision, protection and training. That comes in the number and quality of staffing, the use of equipment such as safety ropes, buoyancy aids, helmets and, finally, ensuring that the staff leading the adventurous activities have the relevant qualifications, expertise and experience. Once you have all of that very firmly in place you are good to go, but always take one or two more staff than you first thought. Then you can let the adventures begin… york-house.com

CROWNING MOMENTS

How St Margaret’s School celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

S

tudents at St Margaret’s School in Bushey enjoyed a special day of celebrations in the lead up to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The offtimetable event saw the whole school take part in a raft of fun activities in honour of the Queen’s 70-year reign. The staff and children kicked off the day with a whole-school, musical-themed assembly and every year group learned more about the history of the Queen. As well as a specially themed ‘street tea party’, with bunting, flags, afternoon tea and cakes, the children enjoyed a traditional charity fair and carousel, with themed games such as ‘Pin the Tail on the Corgi’ and ‘Roll the Penny’. The children also created

their own celebration cards to send to the Queen, and Year 3 took part in devising and setting up a Jewel in the Crown treasure hunt. Every student also designed their own crown or hat to wear to the street party as well as during a special Jubilee parade. This was all topped off with a fantastic ‘Through the Ages’ fashion show, celebrating the last 70 years looking at school uniform through the ages. Julie Chatkiewicz, Vice Principal at St Margaret’s School, comments: “All involved had a memorable day. As a school we have not been able to host anything on that scale for a long time, so it was wonderful to see the whole community coming together again.” Other activities throughout the day included jewel making crafts, a Jubilee quiz, a luncheon of gourmet

ST COLUMBA'S COLLEGE OFFER SPORT FOR ALL

Sporting LIFE With its move to co-education and substantial investment in new facilities, St Columba's College is looking forward to bright sporting times ahead

F

or every school in the land, there are challenges in getting sports education right. On the one hand, competitiveness and sporting success, and on the other ingraining the habits of healthy activity in all young people by delivering sports they love enough to continue after school. St Columba's College in St Albans has a third – its transition to full co-education means sport now encompasses stretch and challenge (and fun) for boys and girls aged 4 to 18. Every challenge is also an opportunity and, with a substantial investment programme in facilities, there are exciting times ahead. Director of Sport Ed Lowe says: "Our vision here at St Columba's is to provide a variety of opportunities that

engage pupils of all abilities and interests." The aim is to spread the net wide at first, with a broader range of sports offered for the youngest age groups, before delivering greater choice and specialism as they grow. A love of physical activity is key, as is engagement with competitive sports. "Whilst prioritising the experience rather than solely the outcome, we hope to also develop positive personal characteristics and values that form the basis of a flourishing student," adds Lowe. The upgraded fitness suite and cardio area works for everyone. Lowe describes the facilities as "inspirational" both for pupils wanting to develop fitness and strength for a sports advantage, and those who simply enjoy this as a healthy recreation activity. Even bigger news is the ambitious sports pitch building programme, which is transformational. Currently under construction, the stunning new sports spaces include a 4G artificial grass pitch match facility for year-round rugby, football and other field-based sports. There's also a sand dressed multi-use games area (MUGA) where students can enjoy everything from netball in the winter to tennis in the summer. "The final piece of the jigsaw is a grass pitch suitable for sports such as football and rugby as well as the summer sports," adds Lowe. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

While St Columba's plays all the traditional independent school sports, it is also widely known for basketball – a legacy of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, the USbased religious order that refounded the College in the 1950s. This authentic slice of American sporting tradition thrives here in historic St Albans. "County titles are won with regularity (usually by multiple age groups each year) and previous national titles adorn the trophy cabinet. St Columba's College can rightly claim to be the most successful independent school in the England Basketball competitions," says Lowe. Swimming is another strength, with talented individual swimmers over the THE FACILITIES ARE SECOND TO NONE

“We hope to develop positive personal characteristics” years and recent success in qualifying for national relay finals, both for girls and boys. St Columba's is keen to continue its strengths, but that is underpinned with a strong belief in offering diverse opportunities in team and solo challenges. Fencing, climbing and golf are in the mix – and with notable national-level players. Cross-country is doing very well under the tutelage of sports staff who are ex-internationals in athletics. Table tennis is growing in popularity and new sports, including spikeball and tchoukball, have joined the menu of PE options. Lowe says it's about inspiring "maximum engagement" among boys and girls. The girls are, of course, key to all of this, and the sports teaching staff have included traditional and non-traditional options here. "Netball will form half of the winter programme alongside football. With football being the fastest growing participation sport in the UK for women, it is the progressive choice that will bring both engagement and, hopefully, competitive success in the future," says Lowe. "Similarly, the summer sport options of athletics, cricket, and tennis will

harness the expertise in the department and allow for a range of experiences." The team are proud that the PE programme they are developing shows no gender bias and are keen to develop as many mixed opportunities as possible. This includes co-ed sports, which Lowe sees as adding an extra dimension. "In picking football as a focus winter sport and having cricket as a summer sport there are possibilities for boys and girls to play competitively all the way through the College." There are high hopes for co-ed success in athletics – including in some of the combined competitions now available. "This includes the Combined Overall District Athletics trophy," says Lowe. "It was donated by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in the 1990s with the view that St Columba's could never win it given that we didn't have girls at the time!" Now that would be a prize that everyone at St Columba's wants to see. stcolumbascollege.org
