July issue highlights

Finally, the sun has come out. London is gearing up for the end of term and the start of the holidays, and you can feel the sense of relief and freedom everywhere. In our house, as in countless houses, there have been A Levels, and the resulting exam stress has dominated recent weeks. So it's a joy to have lots of things to look forward to in July – in this issue we've got lots of staycation destinations – because holidaying in the UK is here to stay – as well as a look at some of the best places to eat by the sea. At home, we're enjoying our gardens and taking inspiration from fashion designer Stina Hasan – aka The Hackney Gardener –and her laid-back approach to planting and maintenance, while making sure that meals outside are equipped with stylish tableware and textiles. All this and more: enjoy July.

ART TO WATCH

Andy Warhol is a figure whose iconic works and global fame need little introduction, but until now, no one has forwarded a clinical psychological treatise upon the artist and the creative drive that propelled him to mega-stardom. In the new book Andy Warhol’s Brain, the esteemed New Yorkbased psychiatrist and practicing artist Phillip Romero does this for the very first time, taking up the challenge to deconstruct the creative brilliance of his peer and personal friend Andy Warhol in all his depth and dimensions, in order to map a path to elevation of the human spirit via artistic endeavour.

Join Dr Phillip Romero on 10 July at London’s Warhol Kennedy Residence in WC2 for a fascinating insight into the creativity of one of the titans of pop art. A er the talk there will be a chance to tour the collection of incredible photography by William John Kennedy, who shot Warhol in the nascent stages of his career in 1963. warholkennedyresidence.com

VIOLA'S ROOM

Punchdrunk's new production is a gothic tale that takes us on an immersive journey

Punchdrunk is dedicated to keeping us guessing. After last year's epic show, The Burnt City, this second piece in the company's vast space in Woolwich is a completely di erent undertaking. It's a smaller show, just an hour long and without actors. Loosely based on Barry Pain’s short story The MoonSlave and adapted for a new audience by Booker Prize-shortlisted author Daisy Johnson, this is a gothic tale that invites the audience to feel it with all our senses. There's a sense of mystery from the start. We're put into groups of six at round tables in a holding area for a briefing, during which we're warned that we'll be in the dark, that we will need to crawl through small spaces and that if we're not comfortable with that we should leave now. Oh, and

that we'll be barefoot. We're issued with headphones, relieved of our footwear and instructed to follow the light at all times. What follows is an atmospheric and eerie journey through Viola's life, narrated by Helena Bonham Carter (she's cleverly cast, her distinctive voice buttery and captivating). We find ourselves in a girl's bedroom at some point in the 1990s, all pop posters and blue-tac, fairy lights and teenage ephemera, with a shag pile carpet underfoot (we're barefoot, remember). Keeping with our group, we follow dark and twisting corridors with cushioned walls and floors, returning to the same bedroom several times to find it in di erent states, eventually full of packing boxes as Viola's story emerges. It's a dark, folklore-style tale that takes in ballet shoes, a maze with a clearing and a large tree at the centre of it and a dreamlike compulsion that Viola feels at night, drawing her into the maze. We follow her gothic fantasy through confusing and disorientating spaces –sometimes in pitch black – revealing a story with an undercurrent of doom. It's all brilliantly constructed, full of suprises and the visual detail that we're used to. Punchdrunk attracts superfans – discussion in my group centres around how many times everyone has seen previous shows, and who has experienced the famed one-to-ones. Viola's Room feels experimental, even for Punchdrunk – and it's not clear whether we can really call it theatre because what is theatre without actors? It's a sensory experience that defies definition but remains imprinted in my mind.

WORLD

As Barbie turns 65, a celebration of her eternal youth opens at the Design Museum, An exhibition charting the 65 year design evolution of the world’s most famous doll will feature over 180 remarkable dolls, with rare, unique and innovative dolls and accessories, plus one of the earliest editions. Visitors will come face-to-face with iconic dolls, from the first Barbie to ‘move’ to the first Barbie to ‘talk’, as well as a vast selection of others that have been a part of the Barbie universe and have made an impact on culture throughout the decades.

The exhibition explores Barbie’s changing appearance in relation to evolving cultural shifts around diversity and representation. It presents exclusive, behind-the scenes insights into Mattel’s design processes, and will o er a detailed exploration of the Barbie doll as a technically and materially innovative creation. The dolls are showcased alongside a vast array of other items and accessories from the Barbie universe of Barbie, displayed together in a stunning exhibition landscape designed by Sam Jacob Studio.

Highlights include some of the most recognisable and bestselling dolls, including the ‘surfer girl’ Sunset Malibu Barbie from 1971

There will also be two examples of 1992’s Totally Hair Barbie, the best-selling Barbie of all time which has sold over 10 million across the globe. There are examples of the first Black, Hispanic and Asian Barbies, as well as dolls that reflect today’s diverse, multicultural societies. These will include the first Barbie with Down syndrome, the first to use a wheelchair, and the first to be designed with a ‘curvy’ body shape. Special dolls on show will include a unique prototype of the very first Talking Barbie (launched in 1968), which is one of several rare items borrowed directly from the Mattel headquarters archives in Los Angeles. This prototype has a transparent torso, intended to display the doll’s voice mechanism — activated by a pull-string — to prospective wholesalers and toy buyers. Many friends of Barbie will also be shown — including her first friend Midge — and the much-loved Christie and Teresa; as well as the younger sister of Barbie, Skipper. There’ll also be a section dedicated to Ken, which will see six decades’ worth of Ken dolls charting his evolution from his introduction in 1961. The first object that visitors will encounter is one of the earliest first edition Barbie dolls.

MATTEL,

The doll — known by collectors as the ‘Number 1 Barbie’, released by Mattel in 1959 — is now extremely sought after. Visitors will see the very first Barbie in close-up alongside archival footage of the first Barbie TV commercial (also from 1959), explore how Barbie ‘the doll’ soon developed into Barbie ‘the brand’.

will also be able to see examples of Barbie’s engaged with modern design in an aspirational but accessible way. The influence of major on the wider history of modern dress. Outfits

A huge variety of playsets, vehicles, houses and other accessories have helped design the universe in which she exists. A rare example of the first ever Barbie Dreamhouse — released in 1962, made from cardboard and sporting the distinctly modernist design of its era — will be among the Barbie homes on show. Visitors will also be able to see examples of Barbie’s vehicles, such as her first car (also from 1962) and her first campervan (from 1971), alongside a whole range of other ‘locations’ — from ski cabins to space stations. Together these items will show how Barbie and her accompanying accessories have always reflected the tastes and trends of the day, and how they have engaged with modern design in an aspirational but accessible way. The influence of major designers and architects — from Florence Knoll to Frank Gehry — on the Barbie universe is clearly visible, along with the significance of various mainstream trends and big retailers. Dozens of original Barbie outfits highlight her origins as a fashion doll, and her impact on the wider history of modern dress. Outfits include ‘Poodle Parade’ (1965) — a life-size replica of which was worn by Billie Eilish at the 2024 Grammy Awards — and a 1985 outfit by Oscar de la Renta. Visitors will be able to trace the changing silhouettes of mainstream fashion over the last 65 years and see the influence of designers from Claire McCardell and Christian Dior to Nolan Miller and Zac Posen on Barbie fashion choices.

In 1997, a group of young Argentians calling themselves De La Guarda were touring an exhilarating but almost totally unclassifiable theatre show called Villa Villa throughout North America. 27 years later, company co-founder Diqui James recalls that they were in Montreal when they discovered that they were on the front cover of Time Out London.

‘It said “Catch the LIFT: Probably the Best Theatre in the World”’ recalls a proud James, still able to recall the headline almost three decades on. And no wonder: it was the start of a beautiful relationship between him and London. Initially Villa Villa was booked for a short run as part of that year’s London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT). But with the company making magazine covers before they’d ever played a show in the capital, it’s not a surprise that the LIFT shows rapidly sold out. ‘We were shocked, really,’ says James, ‘it was amazing’.

A cinematic, endlessly inventive explosion of MTV-indebted visuals and performers who spend much of the time either suspended above the audience or cheekily interacting with it, Villa Villa eventually transferred to the huge, iconic Roundhouse, where it ran for an astonishing 11 months, and might have stayed longer had the venue not closed for a major refurb. ‘This was the old Roundhouse’ says James, ‘and we fell in love with it’. The feeling was mutual: when it was time for the Roundhouse to reopen, there was only one possibility. ‘It was amazing’ says James ‘we closed the Roundhouse with De La Guarda, and then several years later we reopened it with Fuerza Bruta’.

Meaning ‘brute force’, Fuerza Bruta was the name of the James-led successor company to De La Guarda, and also the name of its original show. Reopening the Roundhouse in 2006 and playing a second stint there in 2013,

‘We want to go faster than your brain’

Fuerza Bruta was a colossal global success on a scale at least as big as Villa Villa, touring the world and enjoying a walloping seven-year continuous run o -Broadway. Based around a series of even more stunning setpieces – most famously a man ruggedly running through walls, and a transparent-bottomed swimming pool that descends over the audiences heads to within touching distance – Fuerza Bruta is clearly theatre, and yet hard to really compare to anything else: ‘it’s primitive theatre with very modern tools,’ says James when asked if he has a best way of describing it. ‘So you will see something technically very modern, but the feeling of it is very primitive. We don't use words, we don't tell a story. We go to your body: to the feelings, to the senses. We want to go faster than your brain.’

The original show is 18 this year. That is a long time for a company to have a single piece in its repertoire and while the original was heavily tinkered with over the years and remains in circulation as Fuerza Bruta: Wayra, it was always apparent that James and company were going to have to make a brand new show at some point.

So what next? ‘The happiest show on Earth!’ grins James. Indeed, after a phenomenally successful run in their home city of Buenos Aires, they’re currently performing it on tour in Latin America. The second show from Fuerza Bruta is the radically joyous Aven. The idea of ‘trying to do the happiest thing we can’ was not the initial impulse behind a follow-up to Wayra. But when he shared some of his ideas with his son, James was bemused when he described them as ‘too dark’. Taken aback, he accepted it as a challenge, and so Aven was born, a radiant, dance-based spectacle devised by James with music by composer Gaby Kerpel.

The company loves to play the vaulted, spacious Roundhouse: ‘the size of it, the shape of it, the height of it, it’s beautiful, you know?’ He also reckons London crowds are some of the best and least stando sh. ‘What I feel is that people in London are very confident about theatre. What we do is di erent, so sometimes you go to a city and people need proof, they need somebody else to say “this is good’ to them. But in London if they like it, they like it, if they want to shout, they shout.’ Get ready London: happiness is coming your way.

Chic contemporary Greek dining in Notting Hill

This Portobello eaterie may be Greek, but it’s a world away from an island taverna. This is a chic urban destination, buzzing with wealthy young west Londoners enjoying the stylish surroundings. Tables are laid with beautiful glassware, and colourful glass wall lights and dramatic linen pendant lamps create a stylish look. The menu, of course, is made up of dishes designed to share, and divided by theme, in minimalist style. So

there’s ‘soil’, ‘sea’ and ‘land’ as well as ‘raw’ and ‘spreads’. There’s also a section of fish at market prices –we’re very tempted by the kilo of turbot but clearly we’re not the only ones and unfortunately it’s already sold out. Still, we enjoy a feast. To start there’s excellent creamy tarama and tzatziki, with a high class bread basket including bread crisps, delicious blackened flatbreads and sourdough with a lovely crusty crust. Textures are good here: fried calamari is perfectly crispy on the outside and silky inside. Next to arrive is a dish of beef tomatoes with olive

“Heavenly sweet tomatoes with a blood red salsa and a hint of chives”

oil and tomato salsa, and these are heavenly sweet tomatoes with a blood red salsa and a hint of chives. So simple and so delicious. Tomatoes are billed on the menu as a speciality and we’re slighly envious of a neighbouring table which appears to have a larger portion of a di erent tomato salad. The menu warns: “a meal here will involve you discovering that tomatoes can be a main character” –though I’m already a fan and would never doubt that. Our 500g brill is an impressively large flat fish, fried impeccably to create a slight crispness of skin alongside soft, buttery flesh. Grilled lamb cutlets are juicy and flavourful. There’s a large wine list and my Greek white is giving me a holiday feeling. For pudding, the burned cheesecake is a revelation. With no base, it’s said to feature olive oil and is a blackened, creamy slab of decadent deliciousness. Probably better than any other cheesecake, we agree. Zephyr is a high class spot –it may not be hard to run up a large bill, but that’s not an issue in this location. Thumbs up all round.

Are you dreaming of a wedding that exudes elegance, history, and charm? Look no further than The Inner Temple, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of London, steeped in centuries-old tradition. Imagine celebrating your wedding in a venue that has witnessed the grandeur of history, from the medieval knights to the celebrated figures of the Renaissance. One of the four Inns of Court, The Inner Temple dates back to the 12th century. Originally established by the Knights Templar, this historic site has been a place of significance for centuries. The Inner Temple Garden was the original home of the Royal Horticultural Show from 1888 to 1911 before it moved to Chelsea. During WWII, the gardens were transformed into allotments and a repository for Blitz rubble, adding to the rich legacy of this remarkable venue.

DINNER tonight

Simple meals with exciting flavours

These kö e are so juicy and versatile

Köfte kebabs & garlic sauce

Makes 6 Köfte Kebabs

These kö e are so juicy and versatile. The minty, spiced garlic sauce complements them beautifully, and both the sauce and the kö e mixture can be made in advance and stored in the fridge overnight; however, don’t refrigerate the kö e mixture for longer than 24 hours – instead, freeze it, then defrost, and use when required. I bake the kö e in the oven, but you can cook them on the BBQ (ensure the BBQ grills are hot, to prevent them from sticking, and brush them with a little olive oil as they cook) or in the air fryer. Prep: 1 hour (plus marinating) Cook: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS

For the köfte

• 3 tbsp olive oil

• 500g chicken thigh fillets, blitzed in a food processor

• 500g lamb mince

• 1 red onion, coarsely grated or finely chopped in a food processor

• 1 large kapya biber (capia pepper), red romano or red bell pepper, halved, deseeded and finely chopped in a food processor

• 30g fresh flat leaf parsley, leaves and stalks finely chopped

• 4 garlic cloves, finely grated

• 1 tsp pul biber (Aleppo pepper)

• 1 tsp paprika

• 1 tsp coarse black pepper

• 1 tsp sea salt flakes

• 1 tsp dried mint

• 2 tbsp tatlı biber salçası (Turkish sweet (mild) red pepper paste)

For the garlic sauce

• 1 tsp finely grated garlic

• 4 tbsp mayonnaise

• 120ml natural yoghurt

•. tsp finely chopped parsley

• 1 tsp lemon juice

• 0.5 tsp dried mint

• 0.5 tsp pul biber (Aleppo pepper)

• 0.5 tsp sea salt flakes

• 0.5 tsp coarse black pepper

METHOD

1 Add 2 tbsp of the olive oil and all the remaining köfte ingredients to a large dish, mix well, then refrigerate for at least an hour, or overnight.

2 Preheat the oven to 230C/210C fan. Line a large, shallow baking tray with parchment paper. Take the köfte mixture out of the fridge, wet your hands with cold water (so that the mixture doesn’t stick to them) and shape into 6 long and even-sized köfte, each around 4 x 18cm, directly on the lined baking tray.

3 Using two fingers, gently push down to create indents all along the köfte, ensuring that the köfte keep their shape.

4 Gently brush each köfte with olive oil, and place in the oven on the middle rack for 18–20 minutes, or until the köfte are golden brown and cooked through.

5 While the köfte are cooking, prepare your garlic sauce – mix together all the ingredients in a small bowl and refrigerate until ready to serve.

6 Once the köfte are cooked, serve immediately with the garlic sauce.

Whipped tahini, spiced butter & boiled egg salad

Serves 4

Can I let you into a secret? I’m not a huge fan of what the Western world refers to as ‘Turkish eggs’. Sorry, but the poached egg and yoghurt combo doesn’t do it for me. However, give me a perfectly boiled egg on top of creamy, tangy tahini, drizzled with a spiced pul biber butter and contrasted by the crunch of toasted sesame seeds and a fresh, chunky salad, and I’m all yours.

Prep: 15 minutes

Cook: 15 minutes

INGREDIENTS

• 1 tbsp sesame seeds

• 150g tahini

• 75ml ice-cold water

• 75ml freshly squeezed lemon juice

• 4 large garlic cloves, crushed

• 1 tsp sea salt flakes

• 4 large eggs

• 50g unsalted butter

• 1 tsp smoked paprika

• 2 tsp pul biber (Aleppo pepper)

• 1 small cucumber, roughly chopped

• 1 large, ripe tomato, roughly chopped

• 0.5 tsp coarse black pepper

• 1 tsp dried oregano

• 10g fresh parsley leaves, very finely chopped

METHOD

1 Place a small frying pan over a medium heat, and toast the sesame seeds until evenly golden brown all over. Take the pan o the heat and immediately remove the seeds so they don’t continue cooking.

2 Add tahini, ice-cold water, lemon juice and half of the garlic to a shallow bowl and whisk to a smooth consistency. Add half of the sea salt flakes, whisk again, then leave to one side.

3 Place the eggs in a small pan, cover with cold water and place on the hob over a medium heat. Bring to the boil, simmer for 5 minutes, then cool.

4 While the eggs are cooking, place the butter, pul biber, smoked paprika and remaining garlic into a small pan on the hob on a low-medium heat, and gently stir until the butter completely melts. Stir well.

5 Evenly spread the whipped tahini yoghurt onto four small plates. Peel the cooled eggs, cut in half and place with the chopped cucumber and tomato on the whipped tahini yoghurt. Drizzle chilli butter over the eggs, season generously with the remaining sea salt flakes, the coarse black pepper, dried oregano and finely chopped parsley, and serve with hot crusty bread or toast.

Spiced fruit baklava crumble

Serves 8

This has become my ‘I’ll bring dessert’ dessert. I love how the tartness of baked fruits can cut through the sweetness of a sponge, tart or crumble. However, I always feel a little hard done by with regular crumbles, as the fruit stews at the bottom rather than caramelising resplendently, like the topping, say, of a tarte tatin. So, I’ve flipped this crumble over and infused it with the mesmerising flavours, scents and textures of a nutty baklava. Although I’ve written the recipe for peaches and plums, you really can use any fruit you’d typically use in a crumble or tart, hence the more generic title; peaches, nectarines, plums, apples, pears, rhubarb and berries all work brilliantly.

Prep: 15 minutes

Cook: 40–45 minutes (+ 30 minutes cooling time)

INGREDIENTS

For the pistachio crumble:

• 200g plain flour

• 0.5 tsp baking powder

• 50g rolled jumbo oats

• 60g pistachios

• 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon

• 150g (5.oz) cold unsalted butter cut into 2cm (¾in) cubes

• 50g soft dark brown sugar

For the orange blossom syrup:

• 300ml cold water

• 100g caster sugar

• 2 tbsp runny honey

• 1 tsp orange blossom water

• Juice of 0.5 large orange

• 0.5 cinnamon stick

• 3 cloves

For the topping:

• 400g ripe peaches/plums, or a combination of both, stoned and cut into 1cm (½in) thick slices

• 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon

• Zest of 1 large orange, finely grated

• Juice of 0.5 large orange

• 1 tsp demerara sugar

• 25g pistachios, ground in the food processor + extra to finish

METHOD

1 Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan. Line a 23cm pie dish with parchment paper. Add all of the pistachio crumble ingredients to a food processor and pulse slowly until the butter starts to form large crumbs, but hasn’t been ground down to a powder. Pour the crumble mixture into the lined pie dish and press it down so that

This is my ‘I’ll bring dessert” dessert

the top is completely flat. Bake on the middle rack for 15 minutes.

2 While the crumble base is baking, add the syrup ingredients to a small saucepan, place over a mediumhigh heat and leave it on a high simmer for 10–15 minutes until the mixture has thickened and reduced by half, then turn o the heat.

3 While the crumble is baking and the syrup is reducing, mix together the fruit slices, ground cinnamon, orange zest and orange juice in a bowl.

4 Take the crumble out of the oven, and scrape the flattened top a little with a fork so that it starts to resemble a crumble. Pop back in the oven for another 5 minutes until the top starts to look a little crunchier. Carefully take the dish out again, arrange the fruit slices on top, and scrape out any of the juicy residue left in the bowl and onto the fruit. Evenly pour the syrup over the fruit and crumble. Sprinkle over the demerara sugar and pop the dish back onto the middle rack of the oven. Bake for another 20–25 minutes, or until the fruit has softened, but is still tender, and the tops have slightly caramelised.

5 Take the dish out of the oven, sprinkle over the ground pistachios

so that they stick to the hot syrupy fruit, and let the crumble cool for at least 30 minutes before you try to remove it from the dish. Once cooled but still a little warm, gently lift the crumble out of the pie dish using the paper, and onto a large flat plate, carefully easing the paper out from underneath as you do so. Serve with cream or custard and an extra sprinkling of ground pistachios.

Notes

This crumble can be made the day before, covered with foil and stored at room temperature. Reheat in the oven before serving, if required. Alternatively, once cooked, you can also freeze the crumble for up to 3 months.

Absolutely meets jeweller

Catherine Zoraida

Wax casting looks easy enough. Take a block of wax and cut it with a heated stanley knife, then file it into shape, first roughly, then finely.

I am watching award-winning jeweller Catherine Zoraida demonstrate her skill but inevitably, when I come to try it for myself, it’s not nearly as simple as it seems. Behind all the smiles, Catherine’s focus is razor sharp and millimetre accurate.

We have come to a dreamy location in the Cotswolds, where Zoraida’s shop and base inhabit an impossibly pretty barn conversion in a Cotswolds version of a small shopping mall. So think pretty stone buildings housing tasteful shops selling everything from handmade kitchens to plants, with a fashion boutique, a co ee shop and Zoraida’s jewellery attracting wealthy locals in their 4X4s (parking no problem). It’s a far cry from the mysterious world of Hatton Garden, where she also has a base. Zoraida’s jewellery is well-known as a favourite of Kate Middleton’s, as well as celebrities ranging from Rita Ora to Beyonce – and her style has wide appeal while retaining a strong signature feel.

Born in Columbia and raised in Scotland, Zoraida studied Jewellery and Silversmithing at Edinburgh College of Art and worked under jewellery giants Theo Fennell and Graham Stewart before going on to design collections for fashion names including Vivienne Westwood.

The collection features whimsical and romantic pieces with motifs including ferns, bees and constellations, plus lots of pearls and a few emeralds. Her own engagement ring, which she made herself, started as a single emerald given to her by her husband-to-be. Many of her gold pieces have a matte, hammered quality and delicate gems and intricate shapes add character. You don't have to go to the Cotswolds, but it's a lovely place to visit.

IA groundbreaking new facial

t’s Friday morning and I’m at Libbie Wallace’s skin clinic on Harley Street to try the new PRO XN Xanthohumol Recovery Treatment. “Ageing is 20% genetics and 80% epigenetics”, she tells me as I lie back on the bed. In other words, sleep, diet, stress, sun exposure, and what we use on our skin has a huge impact on how we age. Brand new to UK clinics, Polish beauty brand PRO XN is disrupting the industry with a groundbreaking new ingredient. Derived from female hop flowers, superior molecule Xanthohumol is a powerful antioxidant and antiinflammatory. It e ectively targets 90% of common skin conditions, including acne, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, as well as accelerated ageing by targeting inflammaging, the root cause. Libbie starts with a double cleanse using PRO XN’s Recovery Cleansing Oil. It smells amazing and my skin feels super hydrated. Next, she spritzes with The Prime Mist, to prepare the skin for the PHA Solution Peel. The Xanthohumol Recovery Treatment follows and then Libbie wraps up my face for the Bio Cellulose Mask. She puts me under a broad spectrum LED lamp and follows with The Prime Mist, a few drops of Antioxidant Therapy, and a light application of the Sun Barrier. Xanthohumol supercharges collagen production, and post-treatment my skin is plump and glowy. I continue with the products at home and notice a definite improvement in hormonal breakouts and skin elasticity.

RDREAM MACHINE

With two angles (flat and incline), the FITT GYM machine combines a bodyweight gym, ab trainer and Pilates reformer all in one. It can also be collapsed down for easy storage. £199. amazon.co.uk

eformer pilates seems to be everywhere right now, with new studios sprouting up all over the capital. Being a busy toddler mum, getting out to classes can be tricky and having the option to workout at home has been a real game-changer for me. Unfortunately reformer machines are expensive and I have nowhere to store one in my teeny London flat. So I was excited to discover that celebrity personal trainer Louisa Drake is adding a 'Invisible Reformer' section to her ondemand platform. All you need is a set of gliding discs, and you're ready to go. To take me through

the moves, Louisa invites me to her studio at UNTIL in Soho. I've been doing Louisa's videos every week for the last six months, and I've seen a huge di erence to my strength and fitness. It's always lovely to see her, and she immediately puts me at ease. "I'll show you each move on the reformer machine first, and then you can try it on the floor with the discs" she says. The first thing I notice is that you actually need to work harder with the discs as there's no machine to carry you. "It's a good way to learn the form, strengthen your core, and improve your balance" says Louisa. She's right, after every move on the floor with the discs, I step back

They are also cost e ective, and an easy way to get your reformer fix when you're travelling" Louisa tells me. Back home, I resolve to incorporate one 'Invisible Reformer' video into my routine every week. I find the first few challenging, as I work my core, arms, and legs. Q How did ZoBu come about?

I've been in the aesthetics industry for 22 years and during my career I have seen this industry undergo a massive transformation thanks to advancing technologies and noninvasive treatments. At top-tier medical spas in London, I learned first-hand that using di erent technologies during a single treatment can deliver incredible results, faster. However, no spa was able to provide that flexibility. Clients had to buy di erent packages and arrange for multiple machines to be used at the same time, which was expensive and inconvenient. And then, during Covid, many clients found it di cult to manage clinic appointments and became more focused on safety, health and convenience.

ZoBu was born by addressing these two issues and by recognising a significant gap in the market for at-home luxury aesthetics. We bring the latest machine-based treatments to your doorstep and only use the most experienced aestheticians. By eliminating the need to leave your home and making the entire process easy and time-e cient, our service fits around your schedule and personal needs, o ering unmatched convenience and comfort.

Q What's your background?

Prior to founding ZoBu, I worked at London's top clinics, which allowed me to gain access and experience with the best products, suppliers, and aestheticians. These experiences equipped me with the knowledge

HOME comforts

ZoBu's aesthetics at home are a game-changer. Absolutely chats to founder Zoe Budd

and skills necessary to create a more personalised and convenient aesthetic service, ultimately leading to the inception of ZoBu.

Q What are the advantages of having treatments at home?

It eliminates the hassle of traveling to a clinic and the discomfort of travelling home when your skin is red, uncomfortable and/or sensitive to the sunlight.

At home, you can relax in your own space, and the peaceful environment allows for a more comfortable experience. Home treatments are easily integrated into your schedule. We bring all the equipment, the bed and towels.

Q What are your most popular treatments?

I can't tell you how many women approach us with concerns about loose skin on knees and inner thighs! For this, I love to work with High Intensity Focused Ultrasound to stimulate collagen and elastin, perfect for these aging areas. Treatments for cellulite

and fat reduction are also popular, I combine shockwave therapy with Radiofrequency and Micro compression vibration therapy which e ectively works on water retention, cellulite and skin tightening. When I finish the thigh treatment I include some time in the infrared sauna blanket which helps to speed up the process to eliminate toxins.

The "Skin Flood" facial is a favourite for summer, it's a Korean Mesotherapy packed with 55 hydrating and anti-aging ingredients infused into the skin with micro needles and finished o with LED light therapy.

Q And what are the most innovative ones?

One of our most innovative treatments is the Hair Exosomes therapy. This cuttingedge treatment uses organic hair exosomes to stimulate hair growth and rejuvenate hair follicles. It's an excellent solution for those experiencing hair thinning and loss, particularly popular with my male clients.

Q What areas do you cover?

Our main service regions include Chelsea, Kensington, St John's Wood, Hampstead, Belgravia, Mayfair, Knightsbridge and Notting Hill. zobu.uk

ZENTAL EXPERIENCE CALMAT

Located in London and Milton Keynes, Zental o ers an unparalleled dental and facial aesthetic experience, rated 5* by thousands of patients

At Zental, they believe the best results are found in the details. Their practices blend cutting-edge technology with a philosophy of tranquillity and wellbeing. Their thoughtfully designed practices have been curated to soothe all your senses.

From Invisalign and composite bonding to advanced teeth whitening, they invite you to Trust in Calm with Zental.

Zental was born from the shared vision of two lifelong school friends, Ihsaan and Arif. Ihsaan, a multi-qualified medical doctor, dentist, and surgeon, became increasingly disillusioned with the dental industry. He witnessed first-hand how often patients were anxious and how the clinical atmosphere added to this discomfort. Arif, himself a successful entrepreneur, felt empathetic towards patients that needed care but had nowhere to go. He too was one of the many people who didn’t enjoy going to the dentist. They both saw a desperate need to transform dental visits into calming and positive experiences. Their goal was to create a sanctuary of holistic well-being coupled with exceptional clinical care.

COMPOSITE BONDING BEFORE AFTER: CLINICIAN - DR MIRA MORCOS FACIAL AESTHETICS BEFORE AFTER: CLINICIAN - DR MARIA OLAWALE

This vision culminated in their first branch opening in Barnet in 2019, where they built on their reputable services and award-winning dentists to help more patients and serve the local communities. They then opened Cricklewood and Milton Keynes in 2021, Bexleyheath in 2022, Knightsbridge in 2023, and Earls Court last month, whilst maintaining the high level of patient care, innovation, and zen-like atmosphere we built our reputation on.

COMPOSITE BONDING

Composite bonding is very popular as it is a versatile, cost-e ective solution for repairing chipped, worn, or broken teeth.

• Before: The patient was unhappy with her smile; the colour, shape, and uneven edges of her top teeth.

• After: Composite bonding transformed the patient’s smile simply and remarkably. This quick, drill-free solution gives a whiter, more naturally shaped smile. Their review exclaimed, “My teeth are doing WONDERS!”

Dr Mira Morcos is their Composite specialist.

INVISALIGN

“If you are self-conscious about overlapping teeth then Invisalign is for you. This evolutionary system straightens teeth

without metal braces,” says Dr Hemel Mandalia is the Invisalign specialist.

As Diamond Invisalign providers, they handle hundreds of cases each year, showcasing their expertise in this treatment. Every patient receives a ClinCheck – a 3D impression of their smile – after a quick consultation scan.

FACIAL AESTHETICS

As we age, we lose the youthful volume in our faces and the quality of our skin declines. To address volume loss that can prematurely age us, premium products such as dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, and skin boosters help reverse signs of aging.

“Our approach is always naturallooking results that enhance our patients' youthful appearance and boost their confidence,” explains Dr Maria Olawale, their specialist in facial aesthetics.

HYGIENE SERVICES

A healthy mouth is not just about aesthetics; it’s an investment in your well-being that can pay dividends for your entire body.

“Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and a ect other parts of the body, highlighting the interconnectedness of oral health and general health. So, remember

to schedule regular visits. Prevention is better than cure!” emphasises Dr Alla Bacalu, their Dental Hygienist specialist.

TEETH WHITENING

Premier teeth whitening treatments are a safe and e ective way to remove stains and discolouration. Remember that teeth whitening treatment should only be prescribed by a dentist. Choose from their in-chair or at-home whitening systems, featuring only the top brands like Boutique, Enlighten, and Philips Zoom. “Remember that teeth whitening treatment should only be prescribed by a dentist,” says Dr Mohamed Kassam, their Teeth Whitening specialist.

DESIGN CLASSIC

Two new pieces join the collection of icons at Carl Hansen & Søn

At Carl Hansen & Søn, iconic design combines simplicity, aesthetics and functionality brought to life through skilful work with the highest quality materials. The brand’s story began in 1908 when Danish cabinetmaker Carl Hansen opened a small furniture workshop on the Danish island of Funen. Since then, the company’s success has depended on two core ideas: an uncompromising commitment to the finest craftsmanship, and alliances with exceptional designers who continually reinvent and refine the concept of modern design.

Carl Hansen & Søn’s evolution was deeply influenced by a long-term relationship with one of the greatest designers of all time: Hans J. Wegner. The creative partnership began in 1949, when Carl Hansen’s son Holger Hansen took a chance on the then-unknown designer, and Wegner developed a successful furniture

series that included the now-iconic Wishbone Chair. In the 1950s, Wegner emerged as a driving force in the international success of the Danish Modern design movement. He has since become Carl Hansen & Søn’s bestknown and bestselling designer, his works becoming widely recognized as modern classics and treasured collector’s items around the world – and his legacy remaining an essential part of the company’s DNA. Today, Carl Hansen & Søn continues to work closely with the Hans J. Wegner Studio and is the world’s largest producer of Wegner’s furniture, manufactured in Denmark.

In celebration of Hans J. Wegner’s 110th birthday, the iconic 1949 Wishbone Chair has been reimagined for children. This complex, sculptural chair has been carefully scaled down by Carl Hansen & Søn to achieve the exacting proportions of the original in solid oak and woven paper cord. The result is equally as timeless as elegant and a beautiful addition to a

bedroom or playroom, suitable for age 3+.

Also new to the collection is the Radio House Mirror, designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen in 1945 and custom-made for the royal chamber at the Radio House in Copenhagen. For the first time, the mirror is now available for a wider audience. The fullbody mirror features a handcrafted frame made from solid oak that is assembled with the utmost precision ensuring continuity of the grain structure.

Zoom room

Working from home requires its own approach to decoration. Here’s how to create an impressive backdrop

88 ABSOLUTELY magazines
THE Remote working offers the peace and quiet to form a sentence away from watercooler reviews of last night’s Love Island
“Sometimes I’ll write at the kitchen counter, other times, I crave sitting softer on a sofa ”

For all the talk of home o ces, the reality is that the average house size in the UK is 729 sq ft. That will generally translate to three or four smallish rooms – so even before the shift in working habits, a certain degree of multi-use was necessary for most. While homes are generally far roomier across the States (at a staggering average of 2,273 sq ft), this belies the realities in many of its cities (New York City stands at 983 sq ft, Washington DC at 932 sq ft). If you live in or close to a metropolis and you have a family in an average-sized home, your workspace is likely to double up as a social space. But while you may not have the option of an optimally

balanced ergonomic chair or sound-proofing, that doesn’t mean that you can’t present a professional environment that helps you get into the zone when it comes to remote working.

The key principles for any good working space from a décor perspective are a) the best light possible b) finding a low tra c zone – areas that don’t serve as thoroughfares through the rooms – and c) creating a backdrop that conveys your taste in a way that isn’t visually jarring or distracting.

The shift to remote working has brought countless benefits and for many of us it couldn’t have come sooner. The removal of the commute, the additional flexibility to manage caring commitments… the peace and quiet to form a sentence away from watercooler reviews

of last night’s Love Island. But we cannot deny that hybrid working arrangements have ratcheted up the pressure on our homescapes. Whether it’s having to listen to a flatmate or partner’s calls or find privacy away from the Peppa Pig theme tune, finding a place where you can concentrate e ectively is vital to the new world working order. Instead of one fixed spot, I’m personally a home workspace hopper. Sometimes I’ll write at the kitchen counter, other times, I crave sitting softer on a sofa. My ‘desks’ aren’t all photogenic or set up with the perfect 90-degree elbow angle, but I’d wager that the majority of people reading this are similar and actually enjoy that flexibility.

But the one work environment setting that I am resolutely consistent about is where I take

ABSOLUTELY magazines 89 INTERIORS • WORKSPACE

my video calls, simply because it matters. You may have seen the homescreen critique accounts on Twitter and Instagram or the ‘You Are Your Backdrop’ memes circulating. While this may seem a little extreme, early research has proven the importance of the image you project of your home in a career context. A recent survey of 1,500 respondents showed that candidates on a job interview conducted via video calls were judged harshly for background clutter, whereas the presence of plants and an organised bookshelf in the background persuaded those surveyed of a candidate’s reliability and professionalism. Your background has the potential to reveal a lot about your personality without you even realising it and that can have a big impact on professional perception. While it may be tempting to use the fake digital backgrounds, available for instant download, or even blur your hinterland, I would advise explicitly against it – they look creepy and just make you wonder what the hell is hiding back there. Far better to see it as an opportunity, rather than something to circumnavigate. As a freelancer, I have to make a good first impression several times a day. That good impression will

Consider the objects that will fill your screen as props

simply not be made from the bed or with the dirty dishes piled up in the sink behind me. Your background has the power to humanise you, adding another layer to your story. You should think of it as a visual complement to your CV and, for that reason alone, it pays to invest time and resources into getting it right. Starting with the basics, as mentioned above, one of the most important considerations is lighting. The very best lighting comes from the direction of your computer, so ideally you will sit for a video call facing a light source – if not a window, then the area of the room with best indirect natural light. If you only have the option of a windowless space, consider investing in a ring light. Keep in mind that if you sit between a light source and your screen you will find yourself eerily backlit and your colleagues may not be able to see your features. The whole point of video calling is to see your expressions and get as close to real face time as possible, so always do your best to present a clear image of yourself. The intensity of light is something that décor can help with in the form of window dressings – ideal if you are looking to soften a blazing attic skylight, where home o ces are often located. Harsh

lighting can be just as tricky as low light. When creating a backdrop, consider what values you want your colleagues to take from your home space. Would you like to be perceived as hardworking? Au fait with contemporary art? Personable and approachable? Consider the objects that will fill your screen as props to convey those messages. One of the best ways to showcase those props is with shelving. Colour and pattern can bring further interest to your Zoom room, and both paint and wallpaper are great options – though less is more. For renters, removable, temporary wallpaper is a great option as it will cover all manner of sins. If you’re nervous, start small and go with an easy scalloped shelf, which you can decorate with some personal (though not provocative!) objects. I’m often asked where I get all my bits for shelves and cabinets and there isn’t an easy answer because I get them from everywhere. I never stop looking for beautiful objects, in charity shops, at markets, at airports abroad, on the high street. It’s about pieces that you are personally drawn to, not what is fashionable. I love collections of similar items, though it’s probably best to keep the theme to yourself or you might find you only receive dog mugs for every Christmas ad infinitum. Stripy ceramics are a good example of something that it is easy to purchase and look so cool together. Shapes hewn in di erent shades of marble, interesting candlesticks in pastel tones. Whatever you choose, keep your eye out wherever you go. Eclectic, personal mixtures of print, colour and texture, with pieces you’ve handpicked to create collections of objects that tell your unique story.

Laying ROOTS

At home with The Hackney Gardener, Stina Hasan

In the East London borough of Hackney, Swedish-born fashion designer Stina Hasan has carved out an urban oasis in the small garden of her family home. Arriving in London from Sweden over 20 years ago, Stina Hasan first set up home in West London with a friend. ”But when I met my husband, Simon, a furniture and product designer, our journey eastward began,” she recounts.

Settling in Hackney, for Stina, the vibrant East London borough is more than a location; it is an immersive experience. ”We have been in Hackney for over 20 years now and I really can’t picture myself anywhere else. This area is so diverse and has an energy that I love,” she says. Surrounded by shops, cafes and the lush expanses of Victoria Park, Hackney Marshes and the Olympic Park, Stina relishes the dynamic blend of urban living and green spaces.

In moving to her “forever home,” the city witnessed not only the blossoming of

a family, with the couple’s now nine-yearold son, Monty, but also a garden. By day, Stina works as a fashion designer, but in the evenings and at weekends, she tends to her garden, sharing her passion for gardening with the world online under the moniker The Hackney Gardener. “I always was into gardening,” she says. “I just didn’t realise until I had my first garden.”

As green-fingered matriarchs, her mother and grandmother revelled in the joy of cultivating plants and Stina recalls the frequent conversations that grew around flowers and foliage – and childhood memories of being surrounded by the verdant outdoors. In those moments, she discovered a sense of joy and excitement that would stay with her through the years.

However, the bustling city life brought with it a departure from garden pursuits and for a time, other interests took centre stage in Stina’s life. Yet, life has a way of circling back to its roots:

“I want it to be a relaxing place and I’m careful not to turn gardening into a chore”

“When I found myself with a tiny plot of land in which to grow things, I realised how much I loved it.” It was here, in the heart of the concrete jungle, that she rekindled her love for gardening.

In her small city garden, Stina finds respite from the demands of daily life. Her favourite spot lies at the heart of the rose garden, especially on a sunkissed June morning when she opens the back door and is greeted by the intoxicating scent of flowers in bloom.

“There is always a lot to do, but I want it to be a relaxing place and I’m careful not to turn gardening into a chore,” she explains. Following her instincts, she potters among a wealth of perennials –“nothing fancy or exotic” – and undertakes small tasks between the hardy geraniums, nepeta and lady’s mantle that accompany her beloved roses: “In a small space, you need things that look good throughout the seasons. As she stands amidst the greenery, observing the shifts and changes the seasons bring, Stina recognises the subtle signs of life even in the depths of wintertime. “Even in mid-winter, if you look closely enough, things are stirring with life. That truly fascinates me.”

Her advice for budding urban gardeners is as simple as her garden itself: “Just keep trying things and don’t be put o by overwhelming advice or outdated rules. Gardening is about the process so just enjoy watching things evolve and remember that failure is part of it. And get some roses!”

Villa La Massa makes a great base for exploring Florence and the beautiful Tuscan countryside

It’s said that Tuscany is not just a place but a state of mind where the art of living is perfected. Wise words, indeed. With its verdant rolling hills, sun-drenched vineyards, olive groves, and charming villages, the natural beauty of this enchanting region is bewitching. Add to this the rich tapestry of history and culture, culinary delights and exceptional wines, and you’re undoubtedly well on the way to perfection.

We land in magnificent Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance, and less than half an hour’s drive from our luxurious destination - Villa La Massa. This majestic hotel sits on the banks of the River Arno in the heart of the Chianti region and exudes that uniquely gorgeous Tuscan style. It’s set in 25 acres of stunning gardens with all-round views of those Tuscan hills.

Our elegant suite is in the recently renovated Casa Colonica and accessed through a charming courtyard scented with the aroma of jasmine. Even the air smells magical in Tuscany. There’s a spacious living area and a huge bedroom, and the walk-in wardrobe leads to the beautiful Santafiora stone bathroom with its vast shower, separate luxury bathtub, and stunning views. It’s a light-filled, stylish, and generous space, and we soon feel at home and ready to embrace the Tuscan lifestyle.

Villa La Massa’s location just outside Florence makes it the perfect base to explore

the city’s timeless charms. There’s a regular shuttle into town, ideal for exploring one of the world’s most beautiful cities. The iconic Florence Cathedral, topped by Brunelleschi’s legendary dome, dominates the skyline as we wander through the winding cobblestone streets. There’s a wealth of museums and galleries, lots of great shopping opportunities - from markets to exclusive designer storesand palaces, churches, and gardens scattered among the labyrinth of medieval alleys and charming piazzas. And plenty of charming and welcoming places to stop for refueling.

After absorbing our share of history and culture, we relax at the sparkling azure pool with a glass of Prosecco before sampling some of that delectable Tuscan cuisine. It’s one of the main reasons we’re here, after all.

Villa La Massa has three dining alternatives. Il Verrocchio overlooks the Arno and is where we start our days with a generous bu et of Tuscan specialties. We enjoy lunch poolside at Oliveto Bistro with its fabulous cheeses, charcuterie, salads, and pasta. Evenings start with cocktails in the glamorous Medicean Bar with its award-winning mixologist. We also treat ourselves to a Tuscan feast paired with an incredible array of wines in the wine cellar dating back to the 15th century.

The hotel prides itself on menus centered on local produce, some of which are grown

in the hotel’s kitchen garden, and the estate also produces its own fabulous extra virgin olive oil. And there’s one other special ingredient which can be found nearby.

We don our wellies and head through the gasp-inducing countryside to the Guicciardini Strozzi Estate. We’re going on a tru e hunt in the forest. Leading the way is our tru e master and his specialist dog called Spot (Macchia in Italian – everything does sound better in Italian). It’s a real adventure with lots of enthusiastic digging from Spot, and we find several precious jewels. Brava Macchia. We eat them back at the estate for lunch, paired with some of their delightful wine. Quite simply heavenly. Sharing food and wine in celebration of the history and richness of Tuscan traditions and flavours brings joy to our souls and completes our Tuscan experience. Proving they have indeed perfected the art of living life to the full.

SEA

VIEWS

For a staycation destination, try Fowey in Cornwall

There are places in Cornwall that are so exactly like the Cornish fantasy that it’s hard to believe they’re real. You feel like you’re stepping into the Universal Studios Cornwall experience simulation. Cute, colourful houses, slightly uneven. Bright, weatherbeaten fishing boats. Blue skies, blue sea. Pubs with nautical-themed ephemera on the walls. You get the picture – and nowhere is more Cornwall than Fowey. It’s pronounced ‘Foy’ ( you’ll see the slogan “to rhyme with joy” more than once) and this small town on the south coast is an absolute gem.

We’ve booked an apartment through the aptly-named Cornish Gems and it’s brilliantly located at the top of the town, with huge windows making the most of sweeping sea views across the town and harbour. Three spacious bedrooms with en suites, a well-

equipped kitchen (there’s even a hamper of local goodies) and a large living area with comfortable sofas make it an ideal base.

Situated at the mouth of the River Fowey, Fowey is known for its scenic views, bustling waterfront, and vibrant maritime heritage.

The town's narrow, winding streets are lined with colorful cottages, boutiques and eateries – there are excellent bakeries, good local pubs and a lovely deli. The town dates back to medieval times, once serving as a bustling port for trade and defense.

The imposing St. Catherine's Castle, built by Henry VIII, stands as a testament to its strategic importance. It’s also famed for its literary connections, and you’ll see lots of references to Daphne du Maurier. The house that inspired Rebecca’s Mandely is nearby, and de Maurier’s is celebrated annually at the Fowey Festival of Arts and Literature, drawing enthusiasts from around the globe. There’s lots to do locally - the Eden Project is nearby, for one thing, and there are lots of

beaches and watersports of course. The small town of Mevagissey is worth a trip for its characterful museum and fish and chip shops. We spend an enjoyable day walking the South West Coast Path on what is called the Fowey Hall Walk, a four mile circular trail that takes in two ferries and lots of stunning natural scenery. It’s a well-signposted route along the estuary along a footpath that dates back to the 16th century and played a role in the Civil War, when a gunshot aimed at Charles I is said to have killed a fisherman instead.

Today it’s a popular route. We finish with a large lunch at The Old Ferry Inn in Boddinick before catching the return ferry back across the river and home to the comfort of our apartment. It’s a Cornish gem indeed.

POSSESSING

Last year McLaren celebrated its 60th birthday and, as Absolutely discovers, it all stemmed from one young boy’s racing dream

McLaren, that stalwart of Formula 1 racing and the only manufacturer to have entered and won all three legs of motorsport’s illustrious ‘Triple Crown’, has just celebrated its 60th birthday. With six decades at the very sharpest end of the motorsport food chain under its belt, and a trophy cabinet to show for it, the name has etched itself into not only folklore as one of the UK’s most well-known companies, but a global brand with legions of passionate fans.

It began with a determined young boy. Born in 1937 in Auckland, New Zealand, Bruce McLaren was diagnosed with Perthes disease at a young age, leaving him with one leg shorter than the other, and was told he may never walk again. But, having spent every waking minute of his formative years at his father’s service station and workshop, Bruce was a little kid with a big dream – to one day race cars, just like his father, Les, had done once upon a time. After spending an incredible two years on his back in traction and with his legs in plaster casts, at the age of 15 Bruce and Les McLaren began rebuilding an old Austin 7 which had made its way into the workshop. They had originally planned

to sell the car on, but Bruce convinced his father to instead enter it into the 1952 hillclimb at Muriwai. Due to his father falling ill, young Bruce entered the race himself and, in a surprise to all, won. And with this, an incredible racing career began.

But driving alone wasn’t enough. Bruce had the mind of an engineer and in 1963 formed his own racing team, Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd., with the ambition of building and racing his own cars.

Today, when entering McLaren’s headquarters in Woking, Surrey, you are still greeted by that little red Austin 7, stood on the building’s impressive boulevard of engineering history, right next to a bronze statue of its owner, Bruce McLaren. A little further down, past awe-inspiring cars such as the McLaren F1, the P1 or the new Artura Spider, you will also find an expansive trophy cabinet, housing all of the marque’s souvenirs of success. And there, at the very front, almost overshadowed by its much bigger counterparts, stands a small

DRIVE

golden star on a black base – the first ever McLaren trophy, won by Bruce McLaren at that momentous hillclimb race in Muriwai.

The building housing all of this heritage, the McLaren Technology Centre, has been home to the McLaren brand since 2004, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its o cial opening by Queen Elizabeth II just a couple of months ago. Stood on land that originally housed an ostrich farm, the building was designed by globally renowned British architect Lord Norman Foster, who was originally tasked with

“I FEEL THAT LIFE IS MEASURED IN ACHIEVEMENT”

creating a building that felt like 90% NASA and 10% Disney. Since then, the futuristic looking building has become a topic of mystery and marvel among car enthusiasts. So it comes as no surprise that it has in fact served as a set for multiple award-winning film and TV productions.

The space age facility feels timeless, not two decades old. The suspended timeline the building’s aura creates makes perfect sense though. For a racing team that has six decades of experience on track, McLaren has a road car business that is actually younger than Tesla. It first built a road-car in 1992 with the legendary F1, delivered by a small team of Formula 1 engineers and designers.

But McLaren Automotive – McLaren’s dedicated supercar marque, as we know it today – has only been going since 2010. In that short space time, it has taken those 60 years of on-track experience and innovation to create a supercar business that is already well established, forward-looking and incredibly creative, with a world-leading edge when it comes to lightweight design.

From a bird’s eye perspective, the dramatic building and its lake form a perfect circle, echoing a ying/yang symbol. It’s stunning architecture, but also serves a purpose. The lake contains over 30 million litres of water which is continuously pumped through heat exchangers, helping to cool the buildings and dissipate the heat produced by the Formula 1 wind tunnel. And the greenery surrounding the building captures up to 100 tonnes of carbon every year.

While Bruce McLaren’s life sadly ended much too early in 1970, one cannot help but wonder what he would make of the legacy he left behind. His name, passion and dedication could have died with him – instead they have lived on in racing and road cars alike and can be felt and seen in everything that comes out of Woking to this day. It can all be summed up by one of Bruce’s most wellknown quotes: “I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone.”

Thule Urban Glide 3

Reviewed by ROSIE O’BRIEN

As a fi rst-time parent it can be hard to know where to start looking for the ideal stroller.

Our lifestyle is quite outdoorsy, so we knew we needed an all-terrain design. Swedish brand Thule is well-known and loved by adventurous families, so we were excited to put the new Urban Glide 3 to the test. The fi rst thing we noticed when we got it out of the box was how stylish it is. The lightweight chassis is sleek and all the fabrics have a sporty-luxe feel, so you won’t mind pushing around the city. Suitable from birth, the bassinet is roomy and comfy for newborns, and the seat has an adjustable recline and a new extended canopy for protection from the sun and rain. Thule has also added a built-in leg rest for extra comfy napping onthe-go. For the fi rst time there’s a

y little one always loved her cot. So when her third birthday rolled around, I wasn’t in a hurry to transition her to a ‘big girl’ bed. And then we gave up dummies at night time and everything changed. Suddenly she wanted to sleep in our bed every night and I was getting kicked in the face. We needed to get her excited about sleeping in her own room again. Top of my list was a mattress so comfy that she wouldn’t wake up in the early hours and want to come into mummy and daddy’s bed. My fi rst port of call was The Little Green Sheep as she’d had one of the brand’s eco-friendly mattresses in her cot. Handmade using all-natural materials, they are reassuringly free from harmful toxins and chemicals. The Natural Junior single mattress has been a dream so far. O ering medium-fi rm support, I’m relieved to report that my daughter has magically slept through the night in her own bed every night since she’s had it. After bedtime stories, she likes us to cuddle up with her until she drifts o . I haven’t minded lying on her new mattress one bit. DADDY COOL

Absolutely Mama meets Giles Alexander, author of new parenting book ‘You the Daddy’

136 ABSOLUTELY magazines
Giles Alexander with his boys
“The more informed, confident and hands-on we are as dads, the easier this time is for everyone”

Q Hi Giles, congratulations on the launch of your book ‘You the Daddy’. Can you tell us a little bit more about it and what inspired you to write it?

A Thank you so much! In a nutshell, I wrote ‘You the Daddy’ as an honest, practical and reassuring guide for first-time dads, designed to give them a head start on their parenting journey. When you find out you’re going to be a dad, there’s a huge amount to learn, and fast. A whole new world of pregnancy advice, parenting skills and fatherly responsibilities that you’ve never had to consider before. It’s a big transition that we all go through, which (as well as being exciting) can be really overwhelming, especially the first time around.

To help new dads prepare themselves for what’s to come, the book is filled with all the essential information and advice they need to know about pregnancy, birth and the first three years of parenthood; both in terms of looking after your baby and toddler but, just as importantly, how best to support your partner through every stage of pregnancy and new parenthood.

Because modern parenting is hard work. But the more informed, confident and hands-on we are as dads, the easier this time is for everyone. Plus, on a personal level, my wife and I have decided that our third baby (Bonnie, who’s nearly two now) will be our last, which means I won’t be writing about pregnancy and newborn life as much as I used to. I really didn’t want all that hands-on knowledge and experience to go to waste, so saw this book as the perfect way to pass on everything I’ve learned to the next generation of dads (before my tired brain forgets it all!).

Q What was your own experience like as a first-time dad, and how did that play into your decision to write the book?

A Becoming a dad was one of the happiest times of my life. But, as much as I loved those early days, they were also some of the most challenging. During my wife’s pregnancy, I was all over everything. Attending every scan, NCT class and breastfeeding clinic, asking questions and taking copious notes. Researching how to support my wife through every new pregnancy symptom, learning how our baby was growing, and how to be the best birth partner I could be. But my biggest mistake was neglecting the next (and longest) part... how to actually look after a baby once they’re born!

So, when our first son Teddy was born prematurely, we were suddenly thrown in at the

deep end. Everything was new, confusing and, frankly, scary. Like all first-time dads, I was learning on the job, trying to juggle my work and family responsibilities, whilst operating on little to no sleep. Also, being the first guy in my friendship group to have a baby, there wasn’t really anyone I could go to for advice, which meant I lacked the confidence to know whether what I was doing was right or wrong. When I eventually got round to researching how to look after this new baby of ours, I quickly realised just how much conflicting information there is out there for new parents, and how di cult it can be to find the advice you need when you need it most. Plus, most of what you read about pregnancy and parenthood in other books and online is geared towards mums and their experience, meaning the important role us dads can play is often overlooked. I really wanted to fix this, once and for all, with this book.

Q If you could go back to the first months of new fatherhood, what’s the one piece of advice that you wish somebody had given you?

A I know first-hand how tempting it is after you’ve had a baby, to try and do it all, and never drop the ball. But as I’ve learnt from painful personal experience, while it’s possible to do this in short bursts, it really isn’t sustainable long term.

As your to-do list grows and grows, you’ll have to make sacrifices if you want to keep on top of everything. You might start by getting more takeaways rather than having to go shopping and cook. Staying up late to finish work or household chores, cancelling plans with friends, skipping the gym, and cutting back on things you enjoy. It’s a slippery slope. And before you know it, you’ll find yourself exhausted, irritable, mentally drained and at serious risk of burning out. If you’re constantly tired, stressed, and running on empty, you won’t have the energy to be the kind of father you want to be. You’ll find yourself getting into arguments or falling ill more easily, knocking you out for days (where you’re no use to anyone). And worst of all, you’ll end up missing out on all the best bits about these early years with your kids, too knackered to appreciate just how special this time really is. No matter how di cult it might seem during this hectic time in your life, you need to carve out some time for yourself. Your partner does too. Real quality time, just for yourselves, to

escape the routine and treat your mind, body and soul, so you can come back refreshed, energised and more equipped to deal with whatever new challenge awaits you at home.

Q What are your own favourite moments of new fatherhood?

A There are so many. Holding your baby for the first time. The smell of your newborn’s head. Those funny squeaks they make when they’re dreaming. The first time they grab your finger in their hand, or smile when you enter the room. And, best of all, when they’re sad or upset but instantly calm down once they’re in the safety of your arms. These are the moments that really make you feel like a dad.

Q And what about your not-sofavourite bits of new fatherhood?

A Oh, I love a lie in, so my least favourite part of new parenthood has to be the lack of sleep. No book or parenting class can truly prepare you for the insane levels of bleary-eyed exhaustion we all experience during those first few weeks and months. It’s no coincidence that sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture, because that’s exactly what it feels like!

Th e MAGIC OF PLAY

Cultivating growth in the first two years

Kinderzimmer Day Nursery & Preschool believes in the transformative power of play in shaping early childhood. Play is the cornerstone of early development, unlocking a child’s full potential. Here are some benefits of play in the first five years:

THE PLAYFUL PATHWAY TO DEVELOPMENT

From birth, play is how children explore and understand the world. It lays the foundation for cognitive, motor, social, and emotional development, essential for lifelong learning. Cognitive Magic Unveiled: Play stimulates curiosity, problem-solving and creative thinking. Activities like stacking blocks, imitating sounds, or sorting colours fine-tune cognitive skills. Motor Marvels in Motion: Playful activities such as finger painting, crawling, hopping, or grasping toys help develop fine and gross motor skills. Social Symphony Begins: Interactions like peek-a-boo, singing rhymes, or parallel play build the understanding of emotions, taking turns, and forming friendships.

Emotional Exploration: Dramatic play and reflective activities enable children to express, process, and understand their emotions.

YOUR ROLE IN PLAY

Parents are crucial in orchestrating play. Kinderzimmer’s tips for creating a captivating play environment at home include:

1. Follow Their Lead: Provide toys or activities that align with your child’s interests.

2. Simple Pleasures: Household items like pots, pans, scarves, and boxes can spark imagination.

3. Unplug for Play: Encourage screen-free play to fully engage their senses. Involve children in household tasks.

4. Be Present: Engage in your child’s activities, listen to their stories, and enjoy shared moments.

5. Outdoor Adventures: Nature o ers rich sensory experiences. Explore parks, beaches, or your backyard.

“Play stimulates curiosity, problemsolving and creative thinking”

6. Rotate Toys: Limiting toys prevents overwhelm and encourages deeper engagement.

7. Play Together: Bonding through play fosters connection and joy.

THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY EARLY EDUCATION

Enrolling your child in day nursery can provide a structured, nurturing environment for learning through play. Quality early years education o ers diverse experiences, from independent learning to social interaction, supported by experienced educators specialising in early childhood education. When choosing an early education provider, consider the curriculum, teacher-to-child ratio, and overall atmosphere. Visiting settings and talking to other parents can help you make an informed decision that aligns with your child’s needs and your family’s values.

kinderzimmer’s tailored approach to learning through play nurtures your child’s growth holistically and joyfully. Embrace the magic of play and guide your child’s journey through their first five years.

Kinderzimmer’s Day Nurseries and Preschools are now open throughout London and the Home Counties.

V“Young people will enter a far more fluid working world, one that prizes self-starters who can get the job done without a boss standing over them”

not only for higher education but also for life in the working world. Young people will enter a fluid environment, one that prizes self-starters who can get the job done without a boss standing over them. Given that most universities now place a similar demand on students – less faceto-face time with lecturers and tutors than even a decade ago – students have to learn self-discipline, and learn it fast.

That’s why the sixth form is being reinvented, with schools investing in brand new facilities or ambitious redesigns. Often new sixth forms are in discrete blocks with access to social spaces, including that all-important co ee bar. Tutorial pods and breakout lounges feature, alongside lecture halls – technology and connectivity a given.

from pet care and extended parental leave to mental health support. All positive news, as is IWG’s prediction of the return of the lunch hour as a thing, but how will today’s crop of students manage when so much more responsibility for time management and getting the job done rests with them?

This is where schools come in by delivering a bridge between classroom and what follows. Sixth Forms certainly feel smarter, but schools are all too aware that the expectations placed on the age group soon to enter the workplace are higher than ever. Today’s sixth formers will need to be able to check in to an unfamiliar coworking space, contribute to meetings with strangers without fear, manage information retrieval and connectivity seamlessly, and complete tasks accurately and to time.

When you consider all that, new sixth form spaces look like a calculated investment in confidence and independence building for the super cool but ever more demanding working world of tomorrow.

isit The Engine Room in London’s reinvented Battersea and you get a vision of what today’s students are set to experience in tomorrow’s workplace. Understated, and with a clubby feel, it sits within a proud landmark of the last industrial revolution, Battersea Power Station.

Workers who sign in to The Engine Room are able to host meetings and conferences (real or virtual), catch up with colleagues in the business lounge, hunker down for a bit of quiet time or grab a co ee and light bite. Of course, endless shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities are just outside and you are your own boss in choosing the hours you keep.

International Workspace Group (IWG) the name behind Regus and Spaces – and also The Engine Room – points out that academic research by Stanford, among others, predicts that around a third of white-collar roles will remain hybrid for the long term. Today’s students need to be prepared for dropping into an o ce (or di erent o ces) on an ad hoc basis. There will be no familiar desk, family photos or personal drawer space.

IWG says this has prompted new company roles, including Chief Hybrid O cer and O ce Synchroniser (companies such as Meta already have a CHO). Both roles, as the titles suggest, manage the logistics, productivity and smooth running of organisations where employees don’t routinely clock in and clock out but still need to be briefed, monitored and supported.

This, then, is the challenge facing schools as they prepare post 16 students

Another trend, says IWG, is a more diverse workspace to suit neurodiverse employees, as well as older employees. So, forget that noisy openplan space, quiet and cosy are the way forward, alongside spaces that encourage free flow of ideas in a nonconfrontational way.

Improved benefits will be o ered to tempt in highflyers –

M essage in a BOTTLE

Cathy Ellott of Streatham & Clapham High School, on her Action Plan to help departing students navigate the future with confidence in themselves

As our Year 13 students face the looming challenges of A-level exams, they also look forward to setting sail from the metaphorical safe harbour of school and venturing into the choppy waters of adult life. With a crew of great friends, they are already equipped with their metaphorical sea-legs and have honed crucial life skills, from articulating complex ideas to navigating the changing tides of leadership, consent, and living well online. They may not have Leonardo di Caprio at their side, but they have the ambition and vision to stand at the bow of their ship facing into their future, exhilarated by the view. They are ready for adventure. Or are they? In our schools, we unite in wanting to ready our students for adult life, yet more and more young people are struggling with poor mental health and loneliness at university, sometimes with devastating consequences. With my son starting university last September, my mind was more focused than ever on how we remind our students of all that school has cultivated. How do we ensure that the hedonism of Freshers’ Week doesn’t lobotomise our otherwise resourceful and resilient brood?

Last May I came up with a Year 13 Action Plan that I’m looking forward to repeating this year. Like so much of what we do as teachers, I don’t know how much impact the Action Plan had – we rarely know where

“I want them to keep safe their precious school cargo of good sense, active engagement, friendship and resourcefulness”

the ripples of our guidance land – but I have faith that the Action Plans might bob to the surface, like a message in a bottle.

I will remind my Year 13 students that they need have no fear of what lies ahead (after all, our school motto is: “Towards wisdom unafraid”). They have the skills and resources to flourish – they just need to remember to use them. I will give them a two-sided sheet of paper for them to complete in good oldfashioned longhand. They will do this privately, then put it in a sealed envelope and address it to themselves at home. In September, I will post it to them, for them to read as a reminder before they pack their bags for university. My advice is that they take the Action Plan with them to reflect on when it catches their eye on their bookshelf or tucked in their sock drawer. So, what’s in the plan? It’s simply a list of reminders

of who they are and what they love doing. They need to list three things they are proud of; five things that make them laugh; five people they know they can call or message if they’re feeling sad or lonely; three current activities they enjoy (think sport, music, art, drama – being active, creative, reflective and connected); three new activities that they will explore at Freshers’ Week; and finally – a message to their future self embarking on the uni adventure.

As our students pull up the anchor and set sail to their futures, I want them to keep safe their precious school cargo of good sense, active engagement, friendship and resourcefulness that will be their armoury, comfort and sustenance for all that lies ahead. And perhaps my little Action Plan will bob up, like a message in a bottle on a turbulent sea, at just the moment they need it.

COLLEGE BENEFITS

James

Barton, MPW Group Global Director, on

the benefits for students of heading on to a sixth form

college for education and inspiration

Education is not a one-size fi ts all business, and in the post-GCSE landscape, sixth form becomes a real chance to reinvent yourself. To some this seems daunting, while to others it is an opportunity. It can be di cult for anyone to know what to expect from the whole sixth form experience. That is what causes even the most confi dent to stumble a little at the outset. Is the day structured very di erently? What will the timetable look like? Will you feel like the new boy or girl again or will you be joined by others going through the same process?

And this is where colleges fit into the picture. Born out of the universitytutorial mould over 50 years ago, they have established enough of a foothold to suggest their relevance is beyond question. Sixth form colleges still require an element of myth busting. The stigma that they are only ‘crammers’ or for those who have been removed from mainstream schools is frankly nonsense today.

Sixth form colleges have morphed, diversified, grown and built and are, for many students, a number-one choice. This is because of the variety and diversity they can o er within a more flexible environment. With over 40 di erent A-level options – and some with Foundation courses now too – colleges are geared up for those who know what they want to do in the future. In this environment they can focus on it.

“Students are now at the business end of their school career and they should use the two years of sixth form to work out what they want to do next”

One issue for some students is whether college will be too big a jump? In fact, they are not as far removed from a school as one might expect. We need to explain the word ‘independence’, a red herring in marketing literature. Independence does not mean students are on their own, but rather that they are being taught to cope with what comes next. This ranges from ‘guided’ independent working to accommodation that o ers increasing levels of independence. The ultimate aim of sixth form colleges today is to bridge a gap between school and university, and they have become very successful at it. How? By recognising that what is required extends beyond the classroom – life education is just as important. Regardless of where they choose to go, students are now at the ‘business end’ of their school career and they should use the two years of sixth form to work out what they want to do next. They should expect more focus on careers and university courses, a sensible discussion on gap years (now they are old enough to understand the merits of one), university visits and CV awareness. They should make good

use of their university counsellors and, if they are going for specific programmes or universities (Dentistry, Medicine, Oxbridge), make full use of the specialist guidance o ered. They are at the stage where an element of proactivity is not only expected, but it should also feel natural.

A new environment for sixth form can often be the best source of inspiration for the next step. What should you expect as a student? A more adult learning experience. What should your chosen college expect from you? A more adult student.

The experience you have in this college environment will be defined by what you make of it.

Spanish CLASS

A bilingual stream at The Roche School in Wandsworth is giving early learners immersion in one of the world's most widely spoken languages

There can be no doubt that early immersion in a bilingual setting is a huge boon for children. Beyond the communication skills acquired, there's the boost it gives to general development – cognitive skills, problem solving, empathy and improved facility in native language are all cited.

The Roche School in Wandsworth is taking early language acquisition seriously, having operated an optional bilingual Spanish stream in Reception since 2022. This sits alongside the traditional English stream, so parents can choose either – and take-up

of the Spanish option is high. "In the first year that we started the Spanish bilingual stream, we had no idea how popular it would be, but we had 18% more children joining the Spanish bilingual stream than the all-English stream, so it has been really popular," says Sophie Roche, Bilingual Stream Lead. It has drawn in Spanish speaking families, but they are not the main cohort. "What's actually really interesting is that the majority of parents have no prior links or family who are Spanish speaking. What we've seen is that those parents who do choose the Spanish bilingual stream just recognise the numerous benefits of their child having

more access to Spanish than they would normally get in a primary school setting."

While there are a variety of specialist international schools in London (including the Spanish-Embassy operated Instituto Español Vicente Cañada Blanch in Notting Hill) delivering their home nation's curriculum, at The Roche children are following a UK system and teaching approaches, but with the addition of Spanish delivery across multiple classes. So why Spanish? "Spanish is spoken so widely around the world," says Sophie Roche. "And the founder of The Roche School is a Spanish speaker herself so she's always been very passionate about the language."

Children joining the Spanish stream in Reception spend their mornings learning Literacy, phonics and Maths in English – this is judged to be the best way for building skills in these core subjects. In the afternoons, they move on to topic lessons, but all taught in Spanish. "It's much more organic," says Sophie Roche. "These are lessons they would be doing anyway but they happen to be in Spanish. What's interesting is that the children don't think about the Spanish – they are doing art, but it just happens to be taught in Spanish." This year, the school even has sport delivered by a Spanish speaker, which adds to the immersion as part of everyday school routine.

One of the beauties of immersion in Spanish in these early school years, says Sophie Roche, is that it's a phonetic language, making it more accessible than the traditional UK first foreign language French. No one is expecting children to become fluent Spanish speakers, but this early start will help when they move on to more formal language learning. "Spanish is a good gateway language to other Latin languages," adds Sophie Roche.

There are 29 languages in addition to English spoken by The Roche children (many families already use two languages at home), so the openness of parents to a bilingual early years stream is not surprising. Parents are asked to pick their stream and stick with it for at least half a term – so far only one child has switched back to the all-English stream, and that's because her mother wanted her to focus on

“The children don't think about the Spanish – they are doing art, but it just happens to be taught in Spanish”

her French at home. The bilingual teaching continues to around Year 2, all set within an academically well-rounded curriculum with plenty of sport, drama and music.

The Roche is part of the Bilingual Education Alliance, which shares best practice across bilingual schools and is developing assets and approaches to enhance the experience for young linguists. The focus at The Roche is on building oral skills – with lots of fun using song, images and mime.

Parents have been impressed by how much their children have learnt – many share their newfound facility with Spanish numbers, colours and songs at home. Sophie Roche has no doubt this approach is paying dividends in engaging children with the fun of speaking and understanding foreign languages. "I think it's such a gift for anyone at any age," she says. "If we can facilitate more language exposure during day-to-day learning, it seems like a no brainer."
