s I sit in our beautiful shop dating back to the 16th century, I count myself lucky to be one of the current custodians of such an amazing piece of history. Galio is situated on George Street, St Albans. This historical shopping street is the ancient beating heart of an inspirational city, which we have been blessed to be an integral part of for the last 30 years. Galio was founded in 1992 by my husband, David. Together we have curated a wide range of precious design-led jewellery and watches. Some of my fondest memories have come from creating individual pieces for clients’ special occasions. Welcoming our community, we offer everything from engagement and wedding rings to the perfect summer necklace to a fine time piece. It’s an absolute joy to be part of the fabric of St Alban’s life, getting to know the people, enhancing their experience. Jewellery is such an emotional purchase, it’s truly a privilege to be involved in the client’s selection process. The shop has evolved and seen so many changes in our beloved city, but one thing remains constant and consistent: the authenticity of the people in our community and their unique ability to pull together and support each other. This was seen most clearly in the last two years. Without it, the independent shops like ours and many others in the city would not have pulled through and our thriving city centre would have been left lacking. We are all so grateful to this wonderful city and the people that visit it, we look forward to sharing another 30 years with you all.

he popular family friendly festival, Todd in the Hole, is finally back for its third year, after the disappointment of having to cancel the previous two years. In order to make up for lost time, the team behind this music extravaganza have made sure there really is something to tick the box for all genres. Here’s their rundown of the top acts not to miss. Friday looks set to start the weekend off with a bang. The fantastic line-up includes Mused, Amy Winehouse – A Tribute and the Main Stage headliners, The Killerz. Described as being as exciting as the real band, The Killerz will be entertaining the crowd with a set list of new and old chart hits that includes The Man, Run For Cover, Human and, of course, Mr Brightside. If you want to carry on partying into the early hours, iconic DJ Dave Pearce will be headlining a Classic Ibiza after party on The Woods Stage. If heads are feeling a bit fuzzy after Friday, MeanStreak – an AC/DC tribute band – will be rocking the Main Stage on Saturday lunchtime, setting the scene for a great afternoon of music. Strictly UB40 and The Bob Marley Revival will be ticking the box for reggae fans whilst creating a great warm up for UK Fleetwood Mac and headliner, A Tribute To George Michael featuring Steve Mitchell. For fans who prefer music from the 90s, you're covered too. Back by popular demand, Definitely Could Be Oasis are the Saturday night headliners on the Woods Stage, followed by Pat Sharp who will be hosting a 70s and 80s after party. Sunday sees a selection of community choirs coming together to open the Main Stage followed by the Great British Elvis Off, back for a third year running. In addition to all the above, local Herts based talent will be rocking the Vincent’s and Buskers Stage and, on Sunday, Folk in the Woods will add to the diverse music offerings. Keeping the kids entertained from 11am6pm on Saturday and Sunday will be a host of activities including Imajica Theatre, Tiny T’s Storytelling and Theatre, Showtime Circus, DW Soccer, Sandy Art, a giant sand pit and Stagecoach, all hosted by Gordon Craig panto favourite Aidan O’Neill. VOICE Hertfordshire’s beauty influencer-turned pop artist CC Clarke on navigating motherhood and staying resilient B y N ATA L I E L I
C
C Clarke – which stands for Chelsea Clarke – is a force to be reckoned with. She is juggling her nine-weekold baby Goldie, and 17-month-old Birdyblue (Bibi), managing a house renovation project near Hitchin and filming content for her social media channels. Anticipating a slightly tired voice at the other end of the line, Clarke’s tone remains bright and upbeat – she chirpily apologises for being a minute late for our interview as another call had just come in. As lively and happy as she sounds, is it always the case? “We take each day as it comes, some days I feel full of energy and other days I have to take a step back and allow myself to go through the motions,” she reveals. Clarke, who recently turned 30 (a “petrifying but liberating time”, she admits) started a beauty blog in 2015, which saw her transform into a beauty influencer filming
make-up tutorials and recreating celebrityinspired looks. She has travelled the world, been the face of Maybelline cosmetics and designed a clothing range with inthestyle. com. Today, she has two million followers on Instagram, and more recently she has turned her talents to singing and songwriting. It’s an unusual gig – influencer turned singer-songwriter – but it’s one that Clarke has embraced. As she explains, music is at the forefront of her ambitions. “Music is my number one passion, and it always has been. I fell into the beauty side. One of my biggest downfalls is having too many hobbies,” she laughs. Clarke grew up in Colchester, Essex, and attended Colchester Institute and Tiffany’s Theatre College to study performing arts. Highlights of her performing career include winning the Essex X Factor, playing Sandy in Grease and Scaramouche in We Will Rock You. “I wanted to be on stage, but I soon realised I wanted to be me, so I decided to stick with writing and performing my own music,” she says.
Her 2018 debut track, A Little More, went straight into the top 40 on iTunes and top 15 in the pop charts. Collectively her last four singles have reached more than 2.5 million streams. “It’s amazing, but it’s been tough. It’s only in the last few years I have been able to fly with my music. You need to be in front of the right record labels. I had a manager when I was 18, but it didn’t work out and different labels wouldn’t let me do my thing. “Four or five years ago I managed to find the right team,” she adds. “There have been so many points where I felt like giving up, but people are finding me through my music. You can be an influencer who releases music as a credible artist!” A huge Rihanna fan, Clarke draws inspiration from her life experiences and her upcoming single is about her daughters. “Growing up I always sung about love and heartbreak, the future and what it holds. My next single is about unconditional love.” These days Clarke, who moved to Letchworth four years ago with husband Buzzy (who she married aged 19), has A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

shifted the focus of her Instagram squares. Heart-warming pictures of her family and candid YouTube vlogs document life as a mum-of-two dominate. “We’ve had some health scares with Goldie, so it was important to be open and normalise this,” says Clarke. “There’s nothing worse than painting a picture and making motherhood look easy, I want my followers to know that it isn’t sunshine and rainbows. It does take its toll. “I found breastfeeding amazing but difficult,” she adds. “I experienced a rush of sad emotions when I breastfed, which was down to dysphoric milk ejection reflex (DMER). Fortunately, I’ve not had postnatal depression. I’ve spoken about this online and it’s helped people not to feel alone and to talk about it.” Like any influencer, Clarke has been subjected to vicious comments and trolling, something she is far more resilient about
these days. “Little Birdy came and changed everything and made me realise I was more vulnerable than I thought. All the judgement online was hard to navigate. Some things I look at and some things I don’t. I went into a shell, but I’ve built up my resilience.” With friends close by and family in Essex, Clarke is excited at the prospect of moving into her Hitchin home this summer. “Hertfordshire is our place. We have outgrown our current house – there are prams and clothes everywhere!” As for the future, more children are on the cards. “I haven’t had a chance to miss the new-born stage as I fell pregnant with Goldie when Birdy was only five-months-old. We’d love more kids – the girls have enriched our lives.” Career-wise, she remains fiercely ambitious. “I’d love to work with MNEK, Labrinth, and Ed Sheeran. You never know! Dua Lipa did a collaboration with Elton John, didn’t she? You’ve gotta put it out there,” she laughs heartily. “I say what I want out loud, I feel subconsciously it helps to chase your dreams a bit harder. The ultimate is to release an album and to do a UK and European tour and continue documenting my life.” And what a life it is for Clarke, who after an enthusiastic goodbye, is off to immerse herself in her hectic but fulfilling world. CC Clarke's new single, Nothing I Won't Do, is out now

Q How long have you been involved with Hertford Theatre? Since 2017 in my role of theatre producer and director, with the support of Herts Young Homeless, I produced and toured a piece about young carers to local schools. Hertford Theatre was incredibly supportive and allowed us to stage the production in the studio theatre as part of a fundraising initiative. This established a relationship between us, which was cemented during lockdown. Essentially as a freelance theatre maker when Covid struck, all my work came to an end. Apart from becoming ‘daddy teacher’ – my daughter is seven – I had little to do. Baking suddenly became a thing. I discovered Bengeo and all the lovely walks. But I needed to do something else. I decided to connect with all the arts and cultural organisations in and around Hertford. I was curious to know what they were doing to address isolation and anxiety during lockdown. Rhys Thomas, the director at Hertford Theatre, was curious as well. We began to engage various organisations like Courtyard Arts, the local library and some of the local amateur dramatics societies. This work established a role for me at the theatre as the Associate Artist.

Q What makes it such a great venue to create work with? Opportunity. The venue is so full of potential and possibility. Rhys has a vision that means everyone in our community could play a part in the future success of the building. Not just here in Hertford, but throughout East Herts. Q What can you tell us about The Listening Project? The Listening Project is very much part of the future vision for the theatre. Once the capital development has finished, we hope to create a new Learning and Wellbeing Department. The ethos that will underpin its work will be fundamentally shaped by the community. To do so we must be open to the needs of the community. We must listen before we programme our activity. This may appear obvious, but it’s becoming clear that people in and around Hertford don’t feel like they are always heard.

Q Why is it important for Hertford Theatre to involve school pupils with what you do? Particularly with children and young people, their voice is often ignored. As a theatre maker I’ve worked with children and young people for over 30 years, and often that work isn’t valued because in society we don’t give them the status they deserve. Amnesia sets in and we as adults forget the way we felt when, as a young person, our views weren’t considered. Being a child or a young person isn’t just a phase, it’s a seminal moment in all our lives where we are shaped for the future.
BABA GANOUSH AT DINNIO IS A FAVOURITE
Q What can we expect from the new Learning and Wellbeing department at Hertford Theatre once up and running? To continue to listen and grow our offer, initially with our current partners: Sele School, Herts Regional College, Haileybury and Mill Mead Primary. But then to work with a number of schools in East Herts, many of whom are incredibly excited to make the theatre a key part of their offer to pupils and their families. Our next priority will be to listen and learn from communities in East Herts; be they communities of isolated older people or people who are from different cultural backgrounds. As part of the Districts Cultural plan, we hope to work in partnership with many local organisations to celebrate the heritage of Hertford. Q How long have you lived in Bengeo? My family – wife Felicity and daughter Polly – moved from south east London in 2015. At first, we rented in Bengeo, partly because we wanted to make sure we’d made the right decision to leave London. However, we quickly recognised what a great community Bengeo is. People are so warm and friendly. It’s like living in a village. Q If you had to pick three places you love visiting in the area, where would they be? As I mentioned, lockdown allowed us to explore the local area. On our doorstep we are surrounded by beautiful countryside, be it the Goldings Estate, the walk to Ware, but perhaps my favourite spot is Waterford Marsh. It’s a great place for a picnic. I love craft beer, it’s something I discovered when travelling in the States. We are so lucky to have a number of great bars and pubs in Hertford, but the one I love is the Crafty Duck. It’s
quirky and perhaps less salubrious than some of the bars, but it’s cosy and super friendly, and the beer is off the scale. If I’m out for food, once again there’s lots of choice. But one that my family and I love is Dinnio. Great service. You can eat Italian, or in my case the Turkish orientated menu. Baba Ganoush, smoked aubergine. I just love it. Q How exciting will the redeveloped Hertford Theatre be for the local community and beyond? Well, I’m incredibly excited. I love theatre, I love film, I love live theatre being broadcast into the theatre. Then there are amazing opportunities for live music and comedy. You might say that there will be something for everyone. But as I said earlier, I’m mostly excited by the offer we can make to the community: people of all ages, genders, sexualities, people from different cultures, those with disabilities and learning difficulties, people with mental health concerns. Young people who aspire to be theatre makers, film makers, dancers… the sky is the limit!

Campfire Cask Aged Gin 70cl 43% ABV £40 Forget any preconception about cask aged spirits. This is not smoky, it’s not woody, it’s simply delicious. Ten botanicals underpin a gin that draws its pale golden hue, soft fruity bourbon notes, hints of caramel and a lingering vanilla palate from the meticulously selected American Oak casks.
Campfire Old Tom Gin 70cl 45% ABV £38 In considering how an 18th century rural distiller might approach the creation of an ‘Old Tom’ gin, one of the oldest gin styles, we’ve used fragrant botanicals that would have been available regionally; chamomile, malted barley combined with spice and lemon citrus deliver notes of sweetness.
The Campfire Gin range is distilled by founders and operators, Ben and Kate Marston, at the multi-award winning Puddingstone Distillery in Tring, Hertfordshire. Alongside the four strong Campfire Gin range, the distillery also produces seasonal varieties and special editions in support of conservation and wildlife projects.

Q Your new book Feel Good Food
M O O D
FOOD
Absolutely quizzes Joe Wicks about his new book that's set to make us feel good about ourselves By EVE HERBERT
takes you in a new direction, what made you pivot to writing about food to feel good? A There’s been a massive shift in my narrative over the last couple of years, especially through the pandemic and the links that have surfaced between mental health, the food we eat and the exercise we do. There’s always such a big emphasis on food for fat loss and getting lean by cutting things out, but actually I think the most important thing that draws people back to healthy food and home cooking is the feeling they get when they spend time in the kitchen, creating wonderful recipes with their family, and enjoying the food and the energy it gives you. There’s a big conversation that needs to be had around just how much food impacts our mood – I think people often think adequate exercise and sleep is enough to feel fine, but if your diet consists of mainly heavily processed foods, then this isn’t going to give you energy and will instead bring you down. Feel Good Food is about getting in the kitchen and enjoying the process of prepping food, understanding what you’re putting in your body and how this can benefit our energy levels, focus, attention and mood. For me personally, when I eat junk food I notice I can be more snappy and irritable. Allowing myself treats every now and then is totally fine, but I’ll always come back to nourishing my body A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

with food that makes me feel good. It’s something I’m really passionate about – food, sleep and exercise are all very important to me, because without one of them, it’s very easy to feel off balance. Q Why is it now more important
than ever to start eating food that makes you feel good? A We’re in a time where it’s so easy to get fast food delivered to your door, or to grab a ready meal from a RICOTTA CHEESECAKE
“Food, sleep and exercise are all very important, without one it's very easy to feel off balance”
supermarket, but these meals have such highly processed ingredients that they aren’t going to give you energy, and an excess can hold you back from really feeling your best self. When you have great ingredients in your cupboard and access to recipes that you can bang out in 15/20 minutes, it’s going to set you up for a day of energy, leaving you feeling more focused, calm and tolerant. I think this book contains a really important message for everyone going through a difficult time at the minute – there’s still a lot of anxiety and people feeling low, especially with COVID still lingering, so putting good food in your body means you’re giving yourself the best chance to take on the day feeling energised.
turn means less hassle in the kitchen as well as less dishes, which is great if you’re a fan of speed and simplicity like me. Q What is your top tip for how to
boost your mood with food?
A The most important things for me
are consistency and getting organised. Having ingredients you need in the house and prepping parts of your meal where possible in advance can really set you up for success. If you’re exercising and putting great food into your body, you will feel better, you’ll have more energy to exercise, which in turn means you’ll sleep better and you’ll start to see and feel the links between everything.
Q Have any significant life
experiences inspired the book?
A Yes, 100%. Becoming a parent and trying
to balance work (filming my workout videos) and life (trying to get the kids to bed and have enough sleep myself) has inspired me to think more about batch cooking and family style food – hence the pies, the curries and chillis – that last two or three days in the fridge too. For me, batch cooking means leftovers, which in

rue to the Rare Champagne signature, Rare Millésime 2008 holds unlimited potential of growth, youth and complexity. Rare Millésime 2008 imparts the fervour of an infinite spring. This champagne is a crytal-clear, light gold in colour. The initial nose shines with the pure vivacity of this vintage, showing pronounced aromas of orange blossom, hyacinth and white flowers, with notes of just-ripe Williams pear, fresh coconut, almond, and tangerine. Saline and smoky hints balance the nose perfectly. The palate is crisp and precise, with citrus and tropical fruit lingering on the long, complex finish.
Mix flour, soft butter and grated parmesan. Cook the crumble on an oven tray, ensuring it is properly broken up. 4
Cover the aubergine in the different colours of curry. Add a little Parmesan crumble and basil.
The Rare Champagne experience is a sensory journey. Champagne has this gift to sublimate, and offers a tasting of absolute generosity, mixing the beautiful and the refined. It is all the nobility of the heart that expresses itself through the wine, the moment and the people associated. An experience under the glow of excellence which, while simple and sophisticated, remains and will always remain unforgettable. Mélanie Serre, Chef of the restaurant Louis Vins in Paris and Elsa in Monte Carlo, created this vegetarian dish to complement the flavours and aromas of Rare Champagne Millésime 2008: Candied aubergine with vegetable curry and parmesan crumble. rare-champagne.com

MIX Uncovering the secrets behind Tring Brewery’s latest launch, Alchemist
D
iscerning drinkers in Hertfordshire are in for a treat, as the home counties has a new premium lager – Alchemist. Alchemist is Hertfordshire’s new independent lager, brewed by Tring Brewery using the finest hops from the Czech Republic and Germany. Hersbrucker (DE) and Saaz (CZ) hops have been blended with quality malt and authentic lager yeast for notes of gentle spice and sweet grain. Pouring from the taps in pubs and bars across Herts, Beds and Bucks, Alchemist has been brewed by Tring Brewery, who use local legend to inspire their beers’ namesake and imagery. Jared Ward from Tring Brewery explains: “Alchemist Lager takes its name and design from the story of Dr John Kellerman, a scientist and practising magician who honed his talent for the dark arts in his mansion-come-laboratory in the village of Lilley, Hertfordshire. Kellerman’s mansion was supposedly converted into a highly-guarded fortress, where the doctor would perform alchemy to create heaps of gold. Once his secret got out and the fort was compromised, the Alchemist escaped through his skills of disappearance and vanished, along with his secret methods, forevermore.” Though Tring Brewery have produced real ale for three decades, Alchemist marks their first foray into the world of lager. Andrew Jackson, Tring Brewery director, adds: “The timing just felt right. Long, hot days are approaching, and drinkers everywhere are more discerning as to what they enjoy.”
Long associated with mass-production and globalisation, lager has faced a bad reputation in the UK, a rep that is starting to change. Consumers are more discerning than ever. Many are becoming aware that lager is just another beer style, perfected by master artisans in Germany, the Czech Republic, and now, the world over. The brewery is well-known to readers of this magazine, and for beer drinkers from near and far. But, what makes Tring, Tring? “Each Tring beer is crafted with imagery and namesake of the historic home counties, keeping a local tie with the land around us,” says Jackson. Alchemist Lager is available now in many local outlets, all of which can be found on Tring Brewery’s website. tringbrewery.co.uk/alchemist A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Hasselback Butternut Squash With shallot confit walnut tarator Serves 4
Hasselback is a technique for cooking potatoes originating from Hasselbacken, a restaurant in Stockholm where the dish is alleged to have been first served. The potatoes are sliced at intervals but kept connected at the base, and then roasted in clarified butter until crispy on the outside but soft and tender within. This brilliant technique works on a number of different vegetables, including swede and sweet potato, but this is a favourite.
INGREDIENTS Walnut Tarator • 80g (2¾oz) walnuts, toasted • 1 shallot, finely chopped • 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped • 120g (4½oz) Greek yoghurt • ½ bunch of coriander, shredded • 20g (¾oz) sumac • Juice of ½ lemon • Flaked sea salt and ground black pepper Butternut Squash • 1 butternut squash, cut in half lengthways • 80g (2¾oz) unsalted butter • 120ml (4fl oz) olive oil • Rosemary and thyme sprigs • 4 Confit Shallots • 2 tbsp toasted jasmine rice, coarsely ground • 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds, toasted • Few tarragon sprigs
METHOD Walnut Tarator 1 Remove the skin from the walnuts by rubbing them briskly, then chop to a medium crumb, retaining some texture. 2 Combine the chopped walnuts with the rest of the ingredients for the tarator, fold through and adjust the seasoning to taste with salt and black pepper. Butternut Squash 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F)/180°C Fan/Gas Mark 6. 2 Make incisions into each butternut squash half, at intervals of roughly 2mm (1/16in), about two-thirds of the way into the flesh and along its entire length. 3 Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, add the olive oil,
rosemary and thyme sprigs, and cook for a few minutes to infuse. 4 Dip and roll each squash half in the butter to generously coat. Lay the squash halves alongside the other in a cast-iron pan or roasting pan, season generously with salt and black pepper, and roast in the oven for 45 minutes to an hour, basting regularly with the excess butter mix. The squash should caramelize as it roasts and become soft and unctuous. 5 Once cooked all the way through and meltingly soft, transfer the squash to a plate and garnish with a dollop of walnut tarator, some confit shallots and sprinkle with ground toasted rice and toasted pumpkin seeds. Finish the dish with some picked tarragon leaves.
Cucumber Salad With pomegranate mint Serves 4
Everybody needs a quick and easy cucumber salad to balance a barbecue menu. This pairs well with just about any protein fresh off the grill, especially fish such as salmon or trout, but also chicken.
INGREDIENTS • 5 Lebanese or baby cucumbers, cut to 3mm (1/8in) rounds • ½ tbsp coarse salt, plus extra for seasoning • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
• 50g (1¾oz) fine bulgur • 2 tbsp lemon juice • 80ml (2½fl oz) extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra to finish • 100g (3½oz) natural yoghurt or Greek yoghurt • 1 tsp dried mint • 1 tbsp pomegranate molasses • 40g (1½oz) pomegranate seeds • 1 red chilli, thinly sliced • Small handful of picked mint leaves • 1 tbsp chopped dill • ½ tsp sumac • Flaked sea salt and ground black pepper
METHOD 1 Toss the sliced cucumber with the salt and set aside in a colander over the sink for 20–30 minutes. 2 Meanwhile, soak the sliced red onion in cold water for 20–30 minutes to remove some of its pungency. 3 Soak the bulgur in enough water just to cover for 5–10 minutes, drain, tip into a dry tea towel and wring dry. Transfer to a bowl and dress the bulgur with 1 tablespoon lemon juice and half the olive oil, then season to taste with salt and black pepper. 4 Combine the yoghurt, the rest of the lemon juice, 2 tablespoons olive oil and the dried mint in a small bowl and season to taste with salt and black pepper. 5 Dress the cucumber in the yoghurt dressing and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. 6 Spread the dressed cucumber across a large serving plate or platter, drizzle with pomegranate molasses then top with bulgur, pomegranate seeds, drained red onion and sliced chilli. Garnish the salad with picked mint leaves and chopped dill, and finish with a dusting of sumac and drizzle of olive oil.

METHOD 1 Pour sunflower oil into a heavybased saucepan to a 2cm (¾in) depth. Place the pan over medium-high heat until the oil is 200°C (400°F) when probed with a thermometer. Lower the chickpeas into the hot oil to deep-fry for 8-10 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp. Remove the chickpeas from the oil with a slotted spoon, transfer to a plate lined with kitchen paper, sprinkle with the za atar and turmeric, and season generously with salt and black pepper. 2 Bring a saucepan of salted water to the boil and blanch the spinach for 30 seconds, drain and refresh in a bowl filled with iced water, or under cold running water. Drain and squeeze dry with your hands to remove as much of the liquid as possible. Finely chop the spinach and add to a bowl. Stir through the yoghurt, garlic and lemon juice. Fold in half the olive oil. Season to taste with salt and black pepper. 3 Spread the borani around the base of a plate and spoon over the deepfried chickpeas. Summer VIBES
Absolutely Hertfordshire takes a closer look at the latest collection from Atelier Ferrari+Monti, based in St Albans By MARK KEBBLE
“The colours remind us of beautiful gardens and peaceful walks in nature” ATELIER FERRARI+MONTI CO-FOUNDER ANNALISA MONTI
T
he latest colourful collection from Atelier Ferrari+Monti was inspired by spring blossom and bright pastel colours for summertime. Expect versatile styles for occasions that are finally coming around again: weddings, races, garden parties and holidays abroad. The longer dresses with fuller skirts and more fitted bodice give an elegant and feminine look – the colours remind us of beautiful gardens and peaceful walks in nature. With this collection, the St Albans fashion hub wanted to celebrate new beginnings, going to that first wedding in almost three years with family and friends, or to a big garden party celebration using colours like pinks and blues and green mixed with pop of yellow flowers. For the tops, they focused on a nice smart casual look for the floral print blouse with a 70s style collar, perfect for the office, especially paired with their baby pink suit. They couldn’t miss the classic sheath dress with cap sleeves, such a versatile and unique style especially in the stunning pastel colours, a staple that can last forever in your wardrobe. Another classic style is the pencil skirt in modern and stylish print paired with the pussy bow blouse in crisp white cotton, which can transition from work to evening in just a moment. Natural fibres like cotton and linen are a must for the summer and the colourful stripes and big orange buttons seemed perfect for a stylish but relaxed blouse
for the holidays. The collection also adds some darker colours for the night time, with a full skirt navy sleeveless dress and a silk black and silver top with straps. All of Atelier Ferrari+Monti’s pieces are designed and made to order in their St Albans shop, with the option that all the styles can be tweaked to perfectly fit your style. ’Occitane's mission to lessen its environmental impact began unofficially in 1976 when founder Olivier Baussan encouraged his customers to reuse and recycle their glass bottles. This Eco-Refill program was made official 32 years later, and to this day is still one of the main ways the company seeks to reduce waste. The program offers customers a sustainable way to consume some of L'Occitane's most loved products, whereby they are able to purchase a reusable bottle made of 85% less plastic than the standard packaging. These bottles are refillable either by purchasing eco-refill pouches or visiting selected stores around the UK and pouring directly from the refill fountain. This program continued to grow in popularity and now 26 product lines are available to purchase with more being added every year. By encouraging customers to make this switch, the company has been able to divert 2,000 tonnes of plastic a year from landfills. To celebrate its ongoing commitment to sustainability, L'Occitane launched Green Day Weekend in 2019. The celebration ran from the 26-29 May and this year they are offering customers a free beautifully decorated 250ml Forever Bottle when they buy any two Eco-Refills until the 8 June 2022. HAIRDRESSING IS A REWARDING CAREER
Ro ot to
S U C C E S S How hairdressing can provide career certainty in an uncertain world By TRISHA BULLER
T
he world of work is changing. Advances in technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics mean that machines can take the place of humans because they can do jobs better, faster and cheaper. Even so-called safe careers in industries such as banking, law and accountancy are being swept away due to AI and automated business processes. Of course, it’s not all doom and gloom, as old jobs disappear, new ones are being created by technology companies. But what do you do if you don’t want to be a cognitive computing engineer, a blockchain specialist or an internet of things architect? Career advisors and experts have spotted three trends. The first is called the portfolio career. In the past, students could leave
school, college or university and start a career that would last for the whole of their working life. The portfolio careerist acknowledges that a job for life is unlikely. They equip themselves with a variety of skills and, instead of having a single permanent job, work on multiple shortterm contracts or freelance assignments. A successful portfolio may require regular training or updating of skills and there may be periods of not working between projects. The second trend is the rise of the solo entrepreneur, or solopreneur, as they are increasingly becoming known. Solopreneurs start their own small business often embracing the internet or social media to raise their profile or as a route to market. The rewards for starting a business can be great, but it’s much harder work than it appears and the risks are high – up to half small businesses fail in the first five years.
The final trend, and the one I’m best qualified to advise on, is the rise of skills-based or craft vocations. Many students faced with the prospect tuition fees and leaving university with a pile of debt are choosing apprenticeships or on the job training. Many skills and personal services, in particular, are very unlikely to be replaced by automation. Take hairdressing, for example – I’m sure that it’s technically feasible, but would you like your hair to be cut by a scissor-wielding robot? I would be the first to admit, hairdressing is not for everyone – it’s hard work, requires creativity, training and dedication and you need to be good with people. But with the right training, the rewards can be enormous. In hairdressing, the career path is proven. You can follow in the footsteps of the industry’s best-known names by starting on the salon floor, progressing onto washing hair, greeting and serving clients and assisting the stylists while learning the basics. Some of the world’s top stylists started at 14 as a Saturday girl or boy learning their trade while still at school – and you can too! It is never too late to change your career path either – you may not want to be the hottest stylist in town, but still love the environment of the fashion industry by supporting the team of professionals creating the most amazing looks. There is nothing like training in a real-salon environment, it’s where the big names started. Ciente hair health spa continually invite individuals assessing talented people to join their team. CIENTE Trisha Buller is a trained and qualified trichologist and is the founder of Ciente Hair & Health Spa. Find out more by visiting ciente.co.uk or trishabuller.com

ow the weather is warming up, it means it’s nearly time to brave the sea again. Exercising in saltwater has a variety of benefits for your health besides improving your fitness, including boosting your skin’s health and mental well-being. These benefits are enhanced when the water is on the colder side, but before you dive in, it’s important to make sure you’re wearing the right thing for your safety and comfort. Heritage surf brand Roxy has been making high-quality surf and swimwear for over twenty
years and is a favourite amongst professionals surfers, including seven-time world champion surfer, Stephanie Gilmore. Gilmore is the ambassador for Roxy’s flagship sustainable range, POP Surf, which is a collection of environmentally considered products. This range is just one part of the company's larger commitment to minimising its impact on the environment and making its manufacturing process cleaner and less wasteful. Pop Surf has launched a colourful new collection just in time for Spring, that features brightly coloured neoprene wetsuits made from recycled rubber tyres and
bottles and swimwear made from 100% regenerated nylon. What's more, the light colours and floral patterns have been created using dope-dying techniques, which use less water than traditional dyeing methods. These changes to the manufacturing process have occurred without compromising performance, and all the pieces are twice as resistant to chlorine, sun cream and oils and are built to last longer and stay out of landfills. So whether you are a first-time surfer or a seasoned pro, you can venture into the ocean wearing something that you know is helping protect it for future generations to come.

Absolutely Hertfordshire ventures into one of the county’s most historic properties to discover famous former inhabitants, period features and a wonderful location
B
uilt in 1714, Russells House in Watford is a Grade II listed former country Dower House for the Earl of Essex. It played a crucial role in Britain’s air defence during the Second World War – due to being on a higher elevation on a hill, it had the perfect position to guide fighter squadrons to RAF Leavesden airfield with the use of searchlights. It’s also been home to many notable people over the centuries such as General Colville, who served at the Battle of Waterloo; Sayajirao Gaekwad III Maharajah of Baroda, who was one of the world’s richest men, and was known for having many lavish parties in the main garden for his many acquaintance of British aristocracy and keeping a stable of fine race horses; and William Copeland, who was Mayor of London and owner of Stoke Potteries, London. There are also connections to John Frederick Herring Sr, a painter who ranks as one of the eminent animal painters of 19th century Europe, where Copeland offered Herring use of his house on his estate and commissioned paintings of his racehorses. Many of these paintings were of Watford countryside and seen from elevated views of the estate. As the house comes on the market with Savills, Absolutely Hertfordshire caught up with the current inhabitants to find out more about this unique piece of history in the county. How long have you been living in Russells House? For nine years now. What appealed to you about Russells House when you bought it? We always wanted to live on a period manor estate and looked for one across a wide ranging area around London such as Amersham, Loudwater, Virginia Water and Horsham. Quickly understanding due to their large scale and age, maintenance and condition of the estate
were definite differentiation points for consideration. We even came across an estate due to its large grounds being exposed to future railway expansions from the HS2 line, which would have caused us issues in getting a mortgage. Respectively when we visited Russells House, not only did it looked grand from afar, but also stood up to close inspection, showing good custodianship and maintenance across the years. Russells House was the perfect balance. Although one of the oldest estates, built in 1714, Russells House manor estate was fully renovated in the late 1990s by developers. They even won the Evening Standard Best Development 2000 award for their efforts. Russells House stood head and shoulders above the rest with acres of mature gardens and Lebanese cedar trees as old as the house itself, but with a service charge nearly half of what we would have paid annually on other estates due to its good custodianship over the years. Additionally we nearly always found other estates had new builds that were put up unsympathetically and not in keeping to the estate. What was the property like when you moved in? Although the property was well kept, it was in need of updating throughout. Thankfully through the years the property still retained a lot of its original features and maybe more importantly its Georgian room proportions. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

What can you tell us about the history of the property? Being built around 1714, then only surrounded by Hertfordshire countryside, it comes with such a rich history that is still being uncovered. There is even talk about a secret tunnel that leads from Russells House estate to The Grove estate, which was built a couple of years later. Interestingly it is still possible today to see the original boundary between the two estates as Russells House’s gatehouse still stands between the two estates on Hempstead Road. How have you improved it since moving in? We renovated the entire property over the four floors of the apartment, whilst ensuring to maintain the beautiful Georgian features. Key improvements were to change the flow of the kitchen creating space for the dining table to take centre position. This enables you to enjoy the large kitchen from the centre of the room and creates an additional reading area space by the window for morning coffee. With the family bathroom, we created space for the copper leaf slipper free-standing bath tub to take centre position in the room, finishing it off with the addition of French antique gilded wall lighting. Both kitchen and bathrooms now feature the beautiful and very rare Sheoak hardwood flooring. In addition, we transformed the cellar into a usable room as a gym and wine cellar, and introduced a very practical separate utility room creating even more kitchen space. What is your favourite room/space in the house and why? So many. Being able to sit in the en-suite Japanese style sit-in bath with only tree views through the grand bedroom
Georgian window. The double fronted Georgian windows in both the master bedroom and drawing room where the light just pours in – our orchids have never stopped flowering after all these years. It has the feel of a house rather than an apartment as it’s spread across four floors, therefore everyone can easily find their own space. As Russells House sits on a hill, the beautiful daily sunsets we can see through the front windows with light yet again flooding in even at the very last moment of daylight. The sheer scale and proportions of both the master bedroom and drawing room. The very rare offering of not only having a well-proportioned drawing room, which seems to be the case for most period apartments, but also the master bedroom, family bathroom and kitchen, giving the whole apartment not only a light and bright, but a grand feeling. What do you think is Russell House’s best feature? Location, location, location. A large and elegant Georgian home that offers a wonderful lifestyle between country living and London life, 20 minutes by train to the heart of London and similarly close to Heathrow airport, whilst equally having Hertfordshire countryside on our doorstep with The Grove Country Club, set in 300 acres, within walking distance is an offering hard to match.
Russells House is on the market for a guide price of £1,100,000. For more information, contact Savills on 01923 725 501 or visit savills.com

“Contemporary kitchen tiles are stylish, durable and lowmaintenance – if you choose your materials wisely”
T T a k e

F L O O R Fed up with your kitchen floor? Hyperion Tiles showcases the latest tile trends to inspire your next interiors update
he kitchen is the heart of the modern home. No longer just a place to cook and eat, this room now multi-tasks as never before, which means the flooring option you choose has never had to work harder. Fortunately, contemporary kitchen floor tiles tend to tick all of the necessary boxes. They’re stylish, durable and low-maintenance – if you choose your materials wisely, and porcelain, terracotta and stone are all hard-wearing and relatively easy to care for. Once you’ve chosen your tile material, you’ll need to consider size, shape and colour. Squares and rectangles are a safe bet – and bigger, less ‘busy’ tiles will trick the eye into thinking your space looks larger. But, parquet kitchen floor tiles are are also enjoying a moment, and work well in both modern and traditional settings. Patterned kitchen floor tiles, such as Hyperion Tiles’ Ca’Pietra Cabana Porcelain Sicily tiles (pictured), are the perfect choice if you’re keen to make a serious style statement. Bright shades and bold designs complement the block colours of kitchen cabinetry, adding instant interest and a dash of individuality to your space. If you have reservations on overkill, define a specific area or zone with patterned kitchen floor tiles, rather than the entire room. Another way to add interest to your room scheme is to introduce some texture or colour variations within your kitchen floor tiles. Slate and limestone tumbled tiles are perfect if you’re after a rustic, aged look. Another advantage? Every slab will be unique, allowing you to create a truly bespoke design. GARDEN Five plants to grow in June By LUCY BELLAMY
N
ature has a way of effortlessly arranging itself into beautiful and harmonious patterns This latespring plan adopts a pointillist approach, with points of colour working together to create bolder shapes. Allium ‘Miami’, Cirsium rivulare ‘Atropurpureum’ and the tall grass, Stipa gigantea, all have flower heads made up of lots of minute flowers. The fennel leaves provide a background foil for the bulbs and perennials, while Iris ‘Sable’ in rockand-roll purple roves gently through. This meadow-esque design feels unexpected in a small city garden and has even more impact as a result. In summer the fennel has yellow flowers.
Method
1 Use a spade to dig over the soil to a crumbly consistency, breaking up any big lumps. 2 Gather together all the plants.
70
3 Starting with the Stipa gigantea, space the plants out on the soil, still in their pots. This is a tall, airy plant, so consider how it will look in different spots, including when you view the scheme through the windows of your home. 4 Ad d t h e C i r s i u m r i v u l a re ‘Atropurpureum’ and Foeniculum vulgare, in ones and twos, so that the flowers and foliage mingle at the tips. 5 Dot the Iris ‘Sable’ at random among the other plants. Make sure not to place them too close together as they will grow to be quite hefty plants. 6 When every plant has a spot, dig a hole for the Stipa, Cirsium and Foeniculum. Tap each plant from its pot and winkle out a few of the roots using your fingertips. Dig a hole for each plant to the same depth it was in its pot before planting and firming the soil down gently with your hands. 7 Next, plant the irises. Take care not to plant them too deeply, as the top of the rhizome (the woody stem that looks like a root) needs to stay above the soil. Water thoroughly.

ourth generation bespoke kitchen and interiors experts Cloisters Design are delighted to have seen a significant upward trend of bright and bold colours within their furniture designs. Ultimately their kitchen designs are client lead – especially when it comes to choosing the colours. Their custom-made furniture is truly and completely bespoke, creating unique one-off spaces that you can be proud to call your home. Of course, when it comes to choosing colour, they advise their clients to stay true to themselves and to not necessarily follow the latest trends. Trends come and go and that’s why it’s important to choose something that reflects your personality. Furthermore, their made to order furniture can be repainted time and time again, so making a bold choice can be a little less nerve-racking.
TURQUOISE TONES
So you need some colour inspiration? Bright and airy, turquoise tones – softened with a dark walnut interior – present a resort-like feel. It’s time to think pink and we absolutely love this super playful cabinetry from their Broads range. Quite possibly the greenest of greens have been used to create one undeniably breath-taking space. With complementing gold handles and butt hinges. Brighten up your day with a super fresh sunshine yellow. Create a sense of warmth and a relaxing ambience within your kitchen space. K
it Kemp and Annie Selke have joined creative forces to produce a lifestyle collection inspired by Kit Kemp’s favourite destinations – New York, London, and Barbados. Drawing on the two design powerhouses’ love of travel and textiles, the collection captures the spirit of three iconic locales – translated into some 50 unique and storied rugs, dozens of exceptional pillows, bedding, and rug ottomans – viewed through Kit Kemp’s unique lens. “We are known for adding character and style to interiors to make rooms look magical and sing. We have named the collections after our favourite destinations London, New York, and the Caribbean. I think we can all do with a good splash of eccentricity and style,” says Kemp. “I have always travelled a great deal for work and decided a long time ago that every night away from home should be uplifting and, when possible, inspiring. Kit Kemp’s hotels are the first hotels that made that wish come true,” says Annie Selke. “This collection embodies the magic of Kit Kemp and the transformative spaces and experiences she creates.” Well-versed in the demands of hotels and other high-traffic spaces, the two founders leveraged that experience to create high style, high-performance rugs that will wear well over time.

MINI EXPLORERS Forest Schools are prime examples of how being outdoors can help children learn. Whether that is about nature itself, or perhaps picking up some vital soft skills that will stand them in good stead later in life, heading outside opens up a world of opportunity. ince December, I have been very fortunate to have made frequent visits to Somerset. It is proving a unique experience in my life, seeing how the seasons are evolving every month in one particular, very rural spot. From the dark December days to the joy of turning the corner and seeing the first budding daffodils, followed by May’s bluebells and watching the birth of lambs. All this is often missed in busy urban lives and it has highlighted to me, once again, just how important it is for all of us to learn from and in nature. One very obvious way for children to embrace outdoor learning is through Forest Schools. Not only are there opportunities for young children to enjoy nature-based, child-led activities on a regular basis, but there are also opportunities for taking part in school holiday Forest Schools. Besides Forest Schools, there are many courses and activity holidays available for children of all ages to learn in and about the outdoors – such as sailing, kayaking, climbing, birdwatching... something for everyone. Indeed, many schools are, once again, taking classes on residential trips focussing on outdoor learning and activities. In my own early and adventurous teaching days, we took two classes of eight-yearolds to an island in the middle of the River
“It can lead to a lifetime of greater confidence and adventure” Thames for a few days, crossing over in a small rowing boat type ferry. On another occasion, we even discovered the fjords in Norway with a group of 11-year-olds. These educational visits afforded amazing creative education for those children. Of course, over the years, regulations and safety requirements have become tighter, but the same rewarding experiences still remain. As children grow older, many take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, the highlight of which is the expedition. If they stay the course through the Bronze and Silver Awards and learn, develop and familiarise themselves with the skills, the Gold Award Expedition can provide challenging and exciting experiences that can lead to a lifetime of greater confidence and further adventures. However, perhaps the most valuable times of outdoor learning are those spent as a family. I am a huge advocate of allowing children to dig in mud, climb trees, investigate worms and insects, and simply explore the outdoors. Not only do they learn about nature and wildlife but, without knowing, they are developing their co-ordination, spatial awareness, sensitivity to things and people around them, learning to work as a team – and embracing well-being. One of my happiest family holiday memories is set in the rural Languedoc. Our three young children and those of our friends spent two weeks messing about in a shallow stream, with a local French boy who spoke no English. They made dams, went “upstream”, watched fish and were totally engaged in all that they discovered and the adventures that they had. For them, it opened up a new world. Modern life has so much to offer, but let us all – children and adults alike – grab as many opportunities to learn in and from nature. I still have so much to learn. “We remain a State Boarding School, one of only 32 in the country”
WORLD of OPPORTUNITY Helen Barton, headteacher at St George’s School in Harpenden, on boarding, offering subject choice and how the co-curricular is key to pupils’ development
Q Can you offer us a potted
history of St George’s School? A St George’s School was born in 1907 when the Reverend Cecil Grant moved 50 students and teachers from Keswick School in Cumbria to start his then radical provision of a mixed gender boarding school. His vision was to create an educational establishment where members of the same family could be educated together; a view which was firmly rooted in his strong Christian faith and ultimately the Christian Foundation of the school. The school was taken on by the Local Authority in 1967 and became a Voluntary Aided school in the process. It remained in that position until 2012 when it became an Academy. It remains a State Boarding School, one of only 32 in the country, where pupils who are
eligible for a state funded British education can take advantage of the boarding facilities (for a charge) should this meet their need. The school currently has 1,343 students with capacity for up to 120 boarders. Q Where is the school based? A The Reverend Cecil Grant was specific
about the requirements that his new school should provide. He selected our site in Harpenden for its great transport links, its onsite Chapel (which is still the centre and heart of our school), and for its small but perfectly formed town. These attributes are still true today. The school is centrally located in Harpenden in Hertfordshire. It has easy access to the M1, M25, A1M, a direct train line to London, and has easy access to the
capital, Luton Airport, Heathrow and Gatwick. It is based in a central position within the town and within a very short walk of the town centre. Q What curriculum do you follow? A We follow the National Curriculum at
Key Stage 3, which enables us to offer a broad range of subjects that are taught by a talented team of enthusiastic, creative and knowledgeable staff.
Q How does this change from Year 10 onwards? A In Year 10 we offer a comprehensive range of subjects at GCSE and iGCSE. We encourage pupils to take a broad range of subjects that offer them a blend of skills and knowledge. We offer all of the subjects necessary to take the EBacc, but do not insist that students select subjects that automatically qualify them for it, firmly believing that pupils should select subjects that draw on their individual strengths and interests. Q What kind of things happen at St George’s School outside classes? A This list could be long! We run a series of 21 Inter House competitions per year ranging from chess, through art and photography and into a whole range of A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

We have a comprehensive rugby programme and we pride ourselves on being the only remaining state school to play lacrosse. We regularly have members of our community selected to play for their country in both sports. We have an active drama department who put on a range of productions each year. Our music department is able to provide opportunities in jazz, orchestra, and a range of choral groups. We have on average 160 pupils who take the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award each year, and over 80 who are working towards the Gold Award whilst still at school. The school, pre-pandemic, ran over 20 trips a year and activities beyond the classroom, and we are working our

way back to providing the same level of opportunity now that restrictions are easing. Q Can you sum up what boarding school life is like? A We view our boarding houses as a ‘home away from home’: we try to think about what students would be doing with their families and scale that up for 112 students! During the week we have prep in small groups and meals together as a community. Students will then be given the option of various activities; sporting, crafting, baking and more. We run trips over the weekends with the most recent including paintballing, crazy golf, footgolf and an escape room. Our boarders very much operate as a community

and that runs through everything we do in boarding. We have a brilliant set of boarding prefects who offer another level of support and activity for the rest of the boarding houses, along with planning some amazing formal dinners – the Hollywood themed Spring Dinner was just brilliant! Q How do you look back on this year? A It has been great to be able to see
things return to normal this year. Prepandemic we were a busy school with many opportunities on offer, and over this last year it has been great to see the “buzz” of school life return. stgeorges.herts.sch.uk

PETER PAN TAKES TO THE STAGE
Flying HIGH There was magic in the air as Edge Grove pupils whisk audiences off to Neverland
I
t was a momentous occasion recently at Edge Grove as pupils were able to take to the stage in front of a live audience for the first time in two years. Year 5 and 6 pupils at the independent prep school in Radlett delighted local families with an enchanting, staged production of the classic tale, Peter Pan. This was the first major school production in front of a live audience for two years, due to the previous restrictions imposed by the pandemic and marked a special moment for the
children, parents and staff. The production encompassed three different casts and a total of six showings across three days. Each cast involved every single pupil in Years 5 and 6 with roles spanning principle cast and main chorus. Audiences were treated to one of three different Peter Pans, who each brought their own interpretations to the role of the boy who never wanted to grow up. Likewise, each production had its own mischievous Tinkerbell, and all three of the pupils delivered stunning performances ranging from a calm and collected
pixie, to a sassy and strong-minded fairy. The infamous role of Captain Hook and Smee were played by three different duos, each bringing their own special rapport to the stage. Head of drama, Lucy Neale, says: “Peter Pan was an absolute triumph for the school, and we are super proud of our talented pupils. They each sang beautifully and enthusiastically throughout the production, with a range of songs designed to lift spirits and also some precious moments that tugged at the heartstrings, such as ‘Do you Believe?’ whereby A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

“I saw children doing what children do best: having fun and loving life, just as it should be” Peter Pan urges the audience to believe in fairy tales and Tinkerbell to bring her back to life. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house!” The staging and costumes were impressive, and the performance was also set to a live orchestra, headlined by three members of Edge Grove’s music teachers and its director of music, Karl Leutfeld. The shows were produced and directed by Lucy Neale alongside music and drama teacher, Justine Saville. Andrea Thornton, a parent of one of the Tinkerbells, comments: “I cannot put into words how it felt to see all of those beautiful faces beaming with pride, happiness, joy and excitement. You gave our children back love and hope tonight. They have sacrificed so much over the past two years and tonight, I saw children doing what children do best; having fun and loving life, just as it should be. It was a brilliant choice of script; funny, heartfelt, and every child got a chance to shine.”
94
Lucy Neale adds: “We’d like to thank all of our talented staff and children for their fabulous efforts. Every performance was truly memorable, and it was wonderful to see our local families back in school, enjoying live performances again. It really has been too long, and we are looking forward to the next production.” Edge Grove School is a successful and vibrant independent school for boys and girls aged 3-13 years situated in 48 acres of glorious parkland in Hertfordshire. Dedicated to the creation of confident, self-assured learners, the school nurtures individual excellence and academic rigour in a challenging, warm, fun and inspirational environment. Development of each individual child is at the heart of the school’s approach, characterised by a genuine commitment to the pursuit of excellence. Edge Grove looks to encourage and foster talent whether
in the classroom, art room, in music, on the sports field or, as seen here, on the stage. Its first class resources, strong academic approach and accessible and enjoyable teaching allow pupils to progress individually and reach their true potential in all spheres of school life.
