ugust is the best month in London. The streets miraculously cleared by the absence of the school run, the pavements less crowded, the weather usually balmy. Eating outside, such a luxury for us, becomes the norm, albeit briefly. So in this issue we’re seizing the moment and focusing quite heavily on eating. We have trawled the rooftops in search of the best outdoor options that offer views with your vino, and spent a very long lunch at London’s tiniest fine dining restaurant. Marianne’s, in Chepstow Road, isn’t new but it has quietly built up a huge following for its wonderfully creative dishes and enormous enthusiasm and dedication. We also met Marianne herself to discuss
11 NH_August16_eds_Letter.indd 11
the trials of being on Masterchef (she’d never do it again, she says) and the lowdown on running a restaurant with only 14 covers. In the spirit of August craziness, we are looking forward to a trapeze lesson in Kensington Gardens as Gorilla Circus comes to town – and then, of course, the month ends as usual with Carnival. Love it or escape it, Carnival is a huge ball of energy that takes over our streets for two days over the bank holiday. Which side are you on? Personally, this year I’m escaping. Enjoy August. ◆

recht is never going to provide a cheery night out but the National's ambitious production of the Threepenny Opera is a riotous new vision of the Weimar classic. Visually, it's dark and grotesque, circus and burlesque meeting Edwardian poverty and squalour in the East End. Haydn Gwynne is an uncannily exact replica of Otto Dix's Woman with Red Hair, and her horrible gangland husband is a creepy vision in high heels and a sneer. There's quite a lot of violence, some of it theatrical, all reams of red

ribbon as blood, and some of it actually shocking (cover your ears for the finger breaking scene) – and the entire set up eerily echoes the inequality of present-day London (there's even a Brexit quip). And then there's the music. Mack the Knife, the show's best tune, is brilliantly dealt with in the opening scene with a remarkable performance by George Ikediashi, whose deep voice booms through the ballard. Rosalie Craig as Polly has a voice that's as wonderful as the play is dark and spiky. ◆ Until 1 October; ¢ nationaltheatre.org.uk

ersonally, I have always loved a print with people in it. Figures of any kind on a summer dress are an immediate sell for me, though unfortunately they're quite rare. Flower prints, paisley, even birds, are everywhere. But it's not often that you find a blouse embellished with tiny surfers, ballerinas, tennis players or girls in bikinis. And this is neither a children's collection (as proven by the karma sutra print) nor is it too cute. French label G.Kero is sold internationally with a cult following and its cotton shirts and blouses, bomber jackets and sweatshirts come in prints that are unlike any others

FASHION / PROFILE
“W
e are on a mission to make fashion friendly and fun” says Emma Hill, the former creative director of Mulberry, who launched her own handbag label Hill & Friends together with her good friend (and Mulberry’s former brand director) Georgia Fendley last September. Hill is credited for transforming the British heritage brand into one of the fashion industry’s hottest names, thanks to cult ‘It’ bags such as the ‘Alexa’ satchel and the introduction of a successful ready-towear collection. Hill left the company in 2013 after six years at the helm in what was described as a “very public fashion divorce”, amid rumours of disagreements about a change of direction with its new CEO. Fast forward three years to happier times and we meet at Hill & Friends HQ in Mayfair to discuss the brand’s second offering for the new season. Hill & Friend’s debut LFW presentation last September showcased their SS16
collection at a pink-themed breakfast at Claridge’s for glossy magazine fashion editors that included Anna Wintour. Bellboys clad in burgundy velvet suits with pink trimmings carried the bags on silver platters and were accompanied by Shetland ponies cantering down a mini catwalk. “It was completely bonkers and said everything we wanted to say about the brand. The Bellboy is now our mascot as he is so quintessentially British,” says Hill. “The brand is aimed at women who want a grown-up silhouette and lust after luxury, but are still playful. We decided to start small with six styles that were very functional and classic, but fashion-forward. A good bag should feel like your best friend.” Growing up in Wales, with her mother, an artist and her father, a mathematician meant that Hill had the perfect parental mix of both creativity and numbers. “It really was a dream combination, as I was super arty, but also fascinated with logistics, analytics and business.
A good bag should FEEL LIKE YOUR best friend
25 NH_August16_EMMA HILL v5.indd 25
You absolutely need both in the handbag industry.” Though becoming a bag designer wasn’t always the plan. After studying design at Ravensbourne College, Hill had her sights set on becoming a graphic designer and only took a job at Burberry in the accessories department because it allowed her to fulfill her lifelong dream of moving to New York. She spent 14 years in the Big Apple working for Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Gap and Chloé before moving back to London. Why did she and Georgia decide to start a label together? “Georgia and I joined Mulberry within days of each other and always had such a great working relationship there, so when we both left it made sense to join forces. We wanted to create a brand for women like us, with handbags that were practical with exquisite quality. I felt that there was a gap in the market for bags with a touch of wit and feminine subversion. We have such different skill sets and extreme

People are amazed at how much space there is.” The Autumn/Winter collection has doubled in size with 12 styles in numerous colourways and prints with a focus on popular mini and micro bags. The standout star of the season looks set to be the teeny tiny and impossibly cute ‘Tweency’ Bag (it measures just 16cm x 12cm x 8cm). So what does the future hold for Hill & Friends? “We want to keep true to our brand ethos, continue to grow the brand organically and keep on making fashion friendly.” ◆

areas of expertise, yet much crosses over in the middle – I reference the Venn diagram in the way we work. For the most part I’m in charge of the design, manufacture and production and Georgia looks after branding, social media and communications. But it blurs.” Having a partner in business must mean support through the lows and being able to share the highs, I surmise. “You are always stronger together. We have a gold bell in the office that we ring when ‘good stuff ’ happens, such as seeing our first sale in a new country (Finland had it’s first chime the day before we met) and when we spot a celebrity wearing a bag” (Erin O’Connor, Gemma Arterton and Caroline Flack are fans). brand’s clever signature. ‘Making fashion fun’, happiness and smiley faces seem to be central themes that are often referred to throughout our chat. So what makes a bag happy? “It was really important for us to have a real sense of personality and humour. Fashion can be so highbrow and dull without an injection of fun. I like to mix high and low – mixing luxury with fun to make it less stuffy. Your brand has to reflect who you are.” Do your customers buy your favourite bags? “On the whole, yes. The Mini bag in Oxblood is our biggest selling bag so far. Oxblood is also our biggest selling colour throughout the styles – far more than the black. It’s such a classic and English colour. pened recently in Chepstow Road, Stil reveals its Scandinavian roots with a white, airy interior and minimal feel. Owner Christel Lundquvist is one of the industry's most influential colour experts, having won the British Hairdressing Awards Colour Technician of the year three times, and employed as a brand ambassador for several big name colour corporations. Her skill lies in translating fashion looks into real looks, but even more important than this, she's just so likeable. Christel's own hair is predictably perfect: blonde, straight, unfussy and cleverly coloured. She spends a long time debating what shades to use for me, assessing my skin tone and eyes as well as the existing outgrown highlights. Applying countless careful foils takes some time but it's a lovely environment to be in (the mirrors are unusually flattering, which is something many salons fail to get right) and with a refreshing glass of the salon's trademark black water (looks alarming like flat coke; tastes of regular water; is apparently supremely healthy due to its mineraly and alkalinity) I am enjoying the ride. After a brief and effective trim, and a simple blow dry (thank you for not insisting on the dreaded bouffant) I emerge with a sunkissed mane that's still getting compliments two weeks later. This is a properly professional salon with a great future ahead. Welcome to W2. ◆

ANYA LAHIRI Discover Barry’s Bootcamp trainer’s secrets How did you get into Barry’s Bootcamp? I started as a client 10 years ago and completely fell in love with the workout. I started working in LA, then helped launch the first location in London three and a half years ago. What makes Barry’s “the best workout in the world”? The combination of HIIT and resistance with weights and body weight guarantee results but above and beyond all it is great fun. What exercises are best post-pregnancy? Low impact exercise such as walking and swimming are great to ease you in and protect your joints. What do you do to relax and unwind? My Barry’s classes are my ‘me’ time at the moment. I also love long walks on Hampstead Heath with my baby in the sling and my border collie. What nutritional advice do you follow? I eat a high protein diet with lots of good carbs such as sweet potato. This way my food provides me with a lot of energy. What are your top tips for people who want to lose weight? Finding a fitness class or community, like Barry’s, is a great way to find support and keep you in check with your exercise program. Small steps will eventually get you to your goals and to feeling fit and fabulous again. ◆

WORLD Former Masterchef contestant Marianne Lumb is at the helm of London’s smallest fine dining restaurant. Absolutely marvels at its proportions, and at her culinary finesse Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e

ondon’s smallest fine dining restaurant seats just 14 people in an interior that’s so intimate you could almost eat from each other’s plates. Not that you would, of course, not least because behaviour is paramount in such a small space. But it’s easy to be tempted when everyone’s food as spectacular as this. Marianne, named after its chef and founder Marianne Lumb, is an ambitiously foodie destination in Notting Hill’s Chepstow Road that commands bookings three months in advance and specialises in a decadent five-course tasting menu. Lumb achieved her 15 minutes (‘I mean literally’) of fame after appearing in Masterchef in 2006, despite not actually winning it. ‘It was a very weird time,’ she tells me, in the comfort of her own restaurant. She had been working as a private chef and while working on a book about knife skills, her agent

Being on Masterchef WAS CRAZY. I’m not sure I could DO IT AGAIN
suggested Masterchef. ‘I was worried that nobody was going to buy the book and I’d always wanted to do some TV. And then my book was published the month it aired so I went from being a total unknown to having my 15 minutes.’ Being on Masterchef, she says, was intense and difficult. ‘It was crazy. I’m not sure I could do it again. We had to cook for London’s trickiest food critics, preparing three courses from scratch in 45 minutes on domestic equipment in really hot conditions with no natural light. It sucked everything out of me.’ By this point, Lumb had been cooking for about 10 years and after the show, she went to ‘hide’ in the countryside, working as a private chef for Lady Bamford and soon after that she began dreaming up her own restaurant, which is where we are having this conversation, lunch looming. You can tell why she makes good television – she’s charming, blonde, glamorous, tall and well-spoken, with a clear confidence and lots of energy.

FOOD & DRINK / FOCUS
Was it part of the dream for it to be so tiny? ‘The dream was to build a worldclass restaurant serving beautiful food and wine. Basically to do what I had been doing, but on a commercial scale. I thought my cooking deserved a platform for everyone to come and try it,’ she says. Though really she was envisaging more of a normal-sized place. With six staff manning Marianne at a time, the staff-per-square-foot ratio is particularly high and it’s amazing that she makes it work so well. Being so small makes the place feel extra special, as do the super stylish shades of sage and mushroom it is painted in, the lovely lighting and the curtained windows, all of which create a cosy yet glamorous den for our daytime feast. We are embarking on an epic five-

MARIANNE’S MELON SORBET elons are at their peak in the summer, so find the nicest ones you can. Start this recipe at least a day before you want to use it. Ingredients
For the sorbet syrup • 70mls water • 90g caster sugar • 10g glucose syrup For the sorbet • 450g melon (peeled, deseeded and chopped weight) METHOD 1 Make the sorbet syrup: combine the sorbet ingredients in a heavy-based pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved, allow to cool completely. 2 Take the melon flesh and blitz in a food processor or with a hand blender until smooth. 3

course tasting menu, though reluctantly declining the accompanying deluxe wine recommendation. I can already smell the truffle. ‘Oh that’s just the popcorn,’ says Marianne, pointing at a thimbleful of heavily infused popcorn on the table. ‘We use a lot of truffles and when we have trimmings we use them for salt so as not to waste.’ One of the signature dishes, she says, is truffle linguini, a nod to the building’s past (it used to house muchloved Italian eaterie Casa Fratini). Our lunch certainly is a feast, kicking off with an impressive amuse bouche, a tiny cupful of intense chilled tomato consommé that’s like drinking the purified essence of a hyper real tomato,
A miniature pre-dessert sets the scene for the insanely delicious actual dessert more tomatoey than most tomatoes. Then there’s the starter: a perfectly formed plate of roast asparagus with artichokes and noir de Bigorre cured ham, followed by dreamily fresh scallop ceviche (‘they arrived this morning almost talking to us,’ says Marianne, ‘so it would have been a shame to cook them’) – thinly sliced with notes of chilli and citrus. Then comes a ravioli of roe deer with miso, aubergines and Thai basil, an Asian take on pasta, before main courses, a choice of two, so we do one each, lamb and sea bass, both of them full of intriguing detail and

careful thought. With small, delicate portions such as these, there’s no excess, no padding: every component justifies its space on the plate. There’s a miniature pre-dessert of a divine lemon cream and raspberry sorbet, adorned with a tiny decorative elderflower, setting the scene for the insanely delicious actual dessert which is the improbable-sounding but winning carrot cake soufflé with ice cream, spiced pecans and a small jug of butterscotch sauce. We are instructed to make a hole in the middle of the soufflé and pout the butterscotch in, which seems a shame since it’s such a perfect structure. ‘Souffle is one of our specialities,’ says Marianne. ‘It’s so nice that it has no distance to travel from oven to table,’ which is an advantage of the restaurant’s diminutive size. In fact, there are few shortcomings about its size. ‘We can’t make bread here,’ she concedes. ‘It’s too small for that.’ But otherwise, Marianne’s is perfectly formed. Just make sure to book ahead. ◆

hundred feet above Kensington High Street sits London’s very own Hanging Gardens of Babylon. You’d never expect it from outside but up here three parks span over 1.5 acres and include a private members club and restaurant. The English Heritage have given the rooftop a Grade II listing while the English Woodland plot is home to a variety of exotic birds including four resident flamingos. Food-wise, seafood on The Terrace is really special with tables overlooking the London skyline. Try the roasted scallops with Jersey Royal potato sauce, chorizo and fried capers or the deep fried courgette flower with chutney, broad bean hummus and spiced lemon ricotta. If you want something bigger, the confit salmon supreme with charred cucumber fondants and seaweed tartar butter is very good. For the cooler summer nights, the terrace is heated while blankets and hot water bottles are given to those really feeling the chill. Making the most of the drier climes, the English National Opera and Musicians Inc will be bringing their classical and world music into the gardens with live performances on the 10, 17 and 24 August. Their dreamy music played in such a magical space will make for an ethereal night so buy your tickets now – they’re sure to sell like hotcakes. 99 Kensington High Street, W8; virginlimitededition.com O

These are the kind of PLACES that make a LONDON SUMMER so much FUN Ibiza nights: think white sofas, blankets and lanterns in abundance. This summer, we recommend going there for a boozy brunch. Why? Because the Bloody Mary Bar is back with it’s impressive selection of tomato juices, spices and garnishes. Each drink made to your exact specifications so you’re bound to find the perfect hangover cure. Breakfast food is equally as good – ricotta pancakes with banana and honeycomb butter is indulgent and delicious while the buttermilk chicken with waffles and maple syrup hits the spot between sweet and savoury. If you’re after more of a party, the hotel rooftop is open until 2AM. Cocktails include a summery Mexican el Jimador, cucumber, mint and agave which is super refreshing while the RSVP Sailor Jerry’s, strawberry vanilla and pineapple concoction is sweet and fruity – both make perfect daytime drinks. At £13 a pop, this high end rooftop isn’t cheap but you’re paying for the exclusivity and, of course, the spectacular view. It gets full so book in advance. 226-337 The Strand, WC2R; radiorooftop.com

ost multi-functional spaces have a complete identity crisis and fall apart. Netil360, however, is the exception to this rule. Popping up and down in the same space for the past two years, the rooftop has recently undergone a full refurbishment and is now a fully functioning workspace, cafe, gallery and bar. possible with free wifi, charge stations and, of course, beer. Stocking some of the most local drinks (draft from Five Points in Dalston, spirits from East London Liquor near Victoria Park) the bar actually supports the kind of people who come to work, drink and play. Going one step further, an artist a month is chosen to showcase their work in the bar’s micro-gallery. August sees Hackneybased Jenni Desmond’s illustrations take centre stage while workshops, such as the Grace & Thorn flower arranging class, bring yet another dynamic to the roof. To cut a long story short, it’s impossible to get bored here. Closing a little too early for our liking (10.30pm) we recommend heading to here early and following it up with drinks the bar below, NT. PERGOLA ON THE ROOF
PERGOLA ON THE ROOF
PERGOLA ON THE ROOF white cit y
here’s a distinct lack of pop-up roof terraces in West London. Pergola on the Roof is one of the first and it’s proving to be very popular with a month-long waiting list for table and sofa reservations. Thankfully this doesn’t mean it’s all over for you, walk-ins are accepted but you might have to queue. One of the reasons behind the roof’s great popularity is, undeniably, the location. Taking over the old BBC television centre’s carpark, the concrete wasteland has been transformed into a vision of the med with tanned people lounging around on large white day beds, drinking rosé and playing french boules. Under the ivy–adorned pergola itself, groups sit along communal tables eating food from one of the four restaurant stands. Impressively, Rabbit, Salt Yard, Patty & Bun and LeCoq have all taken residency up here so, rather unsurprisingly, the food is really very good. Big and dirty, LeCoq’s pork belly roll with crackling and Salt Yard’s chorizo and piquillo pepper roll with alioli and rocket are T

rom the team that bought us Design My Night’s “Best Pop-Up in London 2015” this venue is guaranteed to be good. Turning their rooftop into a 1980s playground, palm trees, pastel coloured beach shacks and an impressive amount of sand set the scene – it’s all so kitsch it’s cool. As a rather brilliant Miami Vice x Saved by the Bell parody, DJs play funk, soul, house and 80s pop while special events include Sunset Disco Yoga, rap karaoke and film screenings. With street food vendors such as Lucky Pierre serving steak frites – onglet with béarnaise and watercress - and Other Side, the honey butter bun – buttermilk fried chicken with smoked honey butter, bacon, slaw and pickles – the options on offer will impress any foodie. Special events are taking place throughout the summer but we’re particularly looking forward to the Brixton Rooftop Beach Carnival that will be bringing Caribbean jerk chicken, rum and reggae to the boulevard. Open from Thursday-Sunday, the beach is a place where you’re meant to cut loose so head here when you’re feeling full of energy and want to dance. FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEW golborne deli Fabulous Mediterranean dining in W10 Wo r d s s e r e n a s c a l z o
hether you are looking for a hearty meal or just a quick coffee, Golborne Deli is the perfect choice. Founded in 2002, the rustic Mediterranean menu and quirky interior has set it apart from its competitors. In fact, the deli is so popular during the day that they have expanded into the space next door. Inside, the deli is lovingly decorated with worn wooden benches and long communal tables. The retro soundtrack adds a nostalgic feel and the smell of pastries and homemade cakes is inviting and homely. The extensive menu ranges from porridge bowls for breakfast to freshly made sandwiches and salads for lunch. After much deliberation, we finally decide on the prosciutto and mozzarella arancini (a traditional Sicilian dish consisting of filled rice balls) and a superfood vegan stew with quinoa salad. Both are delicious, and the hearty portions mean that we aren't left hungry. Though one look at the dessert menu and we decide we could probably manage a little bit more. The Golborne Deli is particularly accommodating of special dietary requirements and offer a wide variety of gluten- and dairy-free options. For dessert we try gluten-free carrot cake, served warm and with fresh strawberries. The cake itself is moist and flavourful, in no way suffering from its lack of flour. To finish off the meal we each order one of the deli's famous coffees. Meticulously chosen for its quality and flavour, the espresso really is as good as they say. After a delicious and healthy lunch we leave with the knowledge that we will definitely be returning soon. u

hen you want to escape London's dreary summer, Cottons is the place to go. Here, inside the sky blue building, you'll find a tropical haven complete with its own tiki bar and exotic wall mural. It stocks over 300 rums, so my friend Phil and I immediately ordered the smoking hot cocktail which was a dark rum, Bourbon, demerara and blackberry syrup mix with tarragon, orange and angostura bitters. The reason for the name? It came to us literally smoking. Strong and delicious, it was a punchy start to the evening. To follow, we ordered scallop ceviche and monk cheek accra. The latter was a deep fried chunk of monkfish served with cucumber raita and coconut coriander chutney. Really tasty, the delicate sweet
fish was complemented by the salty batter and coconut sauce – Phil didn't want to share. Meanwhile my scallop ceviche was refreshing with green mango, scotch bonnet and tiger's milk for a fruity, spicy flavour. The seafood platter that followed included huge juicy prawns, lobster, scallops and squid. All chargrilled, the outside of the meat was smokey while the inside was soft. We polished off the entire thing. Finishing up with a creamy Cottons pina colada, made with three year-old Havana, Koko Kanu coconut rum, cream and pineapple juice, we returned to the grey streets of Notting Hill feeling as though we'd been on a brief, but thoroughly delicious, trip to the Caribbean. u

But milliner extraordinaire David Shilling’s career kicked off when at the tender age of 12, in 1966, he made a hat for his mother to wear at Ascot – and not only did she wear it, but she asked for another one the following year and continued to sport her son’s increasingly flamboyant creations for the next three

decades. Over her lifetime, Gertrude Shilling’s millinery highlights included a five-foot giraffe, a giant football and a vast silk sailing boat, all of them her son’s creations. Shilling’s hats make up part of the V&A’s collection and his 2007 display of £1m hats gained international attention. They have been photographed by Sir Cecil Beaton, David Bailey, Lord Litchfield, Lord Snowdon, Norman Parkinson, and Mario Testino and worn by Raquel Welch, Kylie Minogue, Shirley Bassey, Cybill Shepherd, Joanna Lumley, Lauren Hutton and Chrissie Hinde. extravagant and ground-breaking designs made him the godfather of modern millinery. The shop was a conversion of two Georgian houses, which also provided a substantial apartment above, on three floors and with 13 rooms. He was able to hold the first ground-breaking annual shows of his hats in this spacious accommodation, before his growing success forced him into larger spaces such as The Ritz, Claridge’s and The Dorchester. Shilling’s Marylebone hat shop was enormously successful during the 1970s but with demand for hats – especially outrageous ones – declining since the 1980s, he shifted his skills to sculpture, creating steel pieces not entirely unlike his hats. Now he is an established fine artist; his house in Marylebone’s Homer Street reveals his extravagant tastes and

grand style in the interior and layout. The house is decorated with a magical mix of contemporary flair and a nod to its origins – the Georgian terrace was first constructed as a home for a family fleeing the French Revolution, so for such a modest-sized house its proportions are quite grandiose with generous ceiling heights and large entertaining spaces.
For many years, Shilling’s main residence has been in Monaco and now he is selling the London house. He says: “Even after 15 years of living in Monaco people still say to me they expect I will come back to live in London one day. While I love how the house is presently, a great blend of contemporary design with a hint of its origins – and I have even managed to incorporate a covered smoking area – moving back to London isn’t going to happen.” Rosy Khalastchy of Beauchamp Estates, which is marketing the house, says: “Homer Street is presented in a spectacular style, thanks to the design and artistic talents of milliner David Shilling and would make a super London home, complete with entertaining space and a rooftop terrace that affords stunning views across the London skyline.” u This house is on the market at £1.95m with beauchamp.com

ave you ever dreamt of joining the circus? If you haven't, your children probably have. Now's your change to learn the skills as Gorilla Circus, London's only flying trapeze school to be taught by highly qualified, actively performing trapeze artists, comes to Kensington Gardens this month. There's been an outpost of the airborne circus in Regent's Park since April and the residency in W8 is set to remain throughout the month. Here you can learn to jump off a 30 foot-high platform and perform a trick on a full-size trapeze, as you conquer your fear of heights, embark on a full-body workout and have fun at the same time. Children as young as eight can join the mixed-age sessions – and anyone who wants to step out of their comfort zone should have a go. Classes last two hours and cost £24; four-week courses start at £95. Go on, we dare you. u

Not making the grade The exam regulator’s clamp down on appeals has not only angered heads but could have far-reaching consquences for this year’s students Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e

our precious progeny tears open this month’s long-awaited exam results only to withdraw in disappointment. The yearned-for grade hasn’t been achieved, despite A* expectations. So you appeal, right? Well, no, actually, not since Ofqual decided earlier in the summer – when your darling was already knee-deep in their exams – to make it harder to get exam papers re-graded. In a move fiercely criticised by many heads and teachers, the exams board regulator said it would introduce a tougher system to make it harder for some pupils to get “a second bite of the cherry”. This follows a substantial increase in the number of re-marks being requested by schools – often the comparatively time-rich, better resourced private ones – growing from around 190,000 challenges in 2010 to more than 460,000 appeals lodged last summer. More than 90,000 grades were changed after appeals by schools in 2015. Currently exam boards are able to change marks or grades following an appeal if there are discrepancies between markers. But under the new system, a change to a mark will only occur if it is found a ‘clear marking error’ has been made. Ofqual has said this will lead to a fairer system, after it was discovered that some original marks were being overturned despite being what Ofqual describes as “perfectly appropriate”. Ofqual said this was disadvantaging pupils who do not challenge their results. But critics from all across the education spectrum say that Ofqual have failed to sort out the root problem which is an exam system that isn’t fit for purpose. Ann Mroz, editor of the Times Educational Supplement, said: “Instead of doing the difficult job and addressing the
There’s no doubt OFQUAL has made things FAIRER. NOW EVERYONE
is screwed
problems that were causing the grades to be questioned in the first place, Ofqual went for the quick fix and made it harder for all schools to appeal. There’s no doubt it has made things fairer, now everyone is screwed.” Peter Hamilton, Chair of the Headmaster’s Conference Academic Policy Committee and Headmaster of The Haberdasher’s Aske’s Boys’ School, said: “This is quite simply a cynical and undemocratic response to a serious problem which affects young people’s hopes and futures…. Ofqual says its
83 Chis_August2016_EDUCATION_R.indd 83
reforms will prevent pupils from getting a second bite of the cherry, because that’s not fair on the ones who don’t appeal. Hold on. Isn’t that like saying a customer who has been charged the wrong price shouldn’t be charged the right price because other haven’t thought to ask for their refund? … No fair deal here. It doesn’t matter if the pupil is on the C/D borderline at GCSE or A*/A at A-Level. Inaccuracies have major life consequences. Schools are angry that the reforms were announced not only as exams began but as they broke up for half term. “The first we knew about it was when journalists contacted us,” said Hamilton. There is also the key issue of subjects where there isn’t a clear right or wrong answer and how these fit into Ofqual’s ‘clear marking error’ criteria. Subjects such as English and the humanities – often the most appealed papers - often rely on long-form essay responses that are subjectively marked. The Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference – the association of the UK’s leading 275 independent schools – and the school leaders’ union the NAHT, recommended a ‘double blind’ marking system – bringing in a trained examiner to re-mark an exam paper from scratch. “This is clearly what should have happened,” said Hamilton. But “no deal”. Suzanne O’Farrell, curriculum and assessment specialist at the Association of School and College Leaders, said: “Many people believe that the initial quality of marking is not always up to scratch in the first place. There remains an underlying problem in that the system is still something of a cottage industry in which teachers mark huge numbers of scripts in their spare time for little pay. It needs to be better resourced and better structured. The most important thing is to have a system that gets marks right first time.”u

he mere mention of ‘familyfriendly hotels’ normally sends a small shiver down my spine. I fancy myself an intrepid traveller, a wild adventurer. Not for me the all-inclusive ease of a baby-friendly bolthole. Silly me – if only I’d known about Villa Pia I might avoided ten years of stressful, scratchy experiences with wailing toddlers on uncomfortable hot beaches. When I told a friend I was going to ‘some kiddie-friendly place’ in Umbria, she said: “You’re not going to Villa Pia are you?” in the sort of hushed reverential tones normally reserved for religious idolatry. This is the effect that the hotel has on in-the-know breeders. Its online testimonials heave with grateful parents proclaiming: “I actually had a holiday!” Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year,

Villa Pia has grown from small beginnings into a 25-room hotel in the hilltop village of Lippiano on the Tuscan/Umbrian border. The main building is a 15th century country manor house, flanked by two converted barns, located on a steep hillside directly below an 11th century castle. The views of farmland and rolling hills, cypress trees and hazy purple mountains go on forever. The house is as beautiful as you would imagine: cool, dark rooms, wrought iron railings, painted shutters and wisteria-covered

terraces. But there’s more to it than this. Many hotels look good but they don’t have the slavish following of Villa Pia. We met guests there who have been four, five, even eight times – their children growing up with annual trips to the hotel. From the moment we descended the drive into the main courtyard, we knew we had arrived somewhere quite different. It was like arriving at a brilliant house party that was already in full swing. Mums and dads were lolling in deckchairs while little ones took over the play equipment in the courtyard and crowds of older children dashed around playing imaginary games. The bell then rang for lunch and everyone helped themselves to a resplendent buffet before grabbing a seat and chatting to whoever was next to them. Our first experience was much like the rest of our week. Villa Pia has all the fancy trimmings of a five-star experience but none

THERE IS
endless space for CHILDREN TO PLAY
in complete safety of the formality. This makes for a lovely atmosphere but the serious secret of Villa Pia’s success is that it is the very definition of ‘family friendly’. Morag and Kevin, who bought the property in 1997, raised their three children here. They understand the needs of children and, more importantly, their pie-eyed parents. Everything at Villa Pia has been developed to keep children happy and occupied, and give their parents a proper break. Children need space and Villa Pia has five acres of it. There is endless space for the kids to play freely in complete safety. The swimming pools are cut into the hillside; lying on a lounger there feels surreal. Someone cleverer than me described it as “like swimming in a picture, as if someone has imposed a Hockney on a Piero Della Francesco landscape painting.” The pool for the little ones is blood-warm and deep enough to be both safe and fun. Our five year-old barely left it all week. And just when you really want to be left alone to read, Villa Pia comes up trumps. It runs cooking and art classes for children, craftily timed for after lunch, so as that second glass of wine kicks in, your little darlings skip off to make pizza or cardboard guitars, leaving you with the blissful chance to snooze for a couple of hours in the sun. Then there is the glorious food for which Villa Pia is rightfully lauded. Meals are served by a small but prodigious army of ladies from the village in chef’s whites and cloche hats. Breakfast is a buffet, served in the converted barn. Lunch is a grand buffet spread – if you like lots of different, delicious
salads, from roast vegetables, to lentils, melanzane parmigano (every day!) and pasta in every conceivable form then you will understand why I still miss the Villa Pia lunches. Dinner is in two parts – the children are all fed together at 6pm on friendly fare such as cheesy pasta, sausage and chips, pizza. Parents reconvene at 8pm for drinks followed by a decadent four-course meal, with wines and coffee a plenty. If your baby monitor doesn’t reach the dining room Villa Pia will provide you with a babysitter so you can have a guilt-free grown-up evening. For some of the newer mothers we met, this was their first taste of freedom in months. And here we get to the crux of it. Villa Pia has guests returning again and again because it is the staff that make it. Paola, Aniko and Alessandro make each and every person feel like they are at home. Children’s names (and yours) are learnt in jiffy and the staff work quietly and constantly to make sure you feel at home. A note of caution: guests are governed by the school timetable
89 NH_Aug16_Travel_UMBRIA.indd 89
so during term time expect preschoolers. We were there in half term and the dominant age was six to nine. Our 12 year-old was slightly adrift – apparently the older children are there in July and August (along with 30c-plus temperatures). So plan accordingly. And if you are an anti-social sort, not given to pitching in and chatting, Villa Pia is not for you. If you do want to drag yourself away from the drinks room, there is loads to do in the surrounding area. This is Pierro Della Francesca country and his Madonna del Parto hangs in nearby Monterchi and his Legend of the True Cross – considered one of the Renaissance’s finest works – is in Arezzo. But unless your five year-old is alive to the charms of an early Renaissance master (ours most certainly wasn’t) I suggest you stay put at Villa Pia and do very little. The kids were brilliantly entertained which meant we could do what most exhausted parents really want on holiday… precisely nothing. I highly recommend it. u
¢ There is still availability at Villa Pia for September and October. Prices for adults from £550 per person per week; for children between the ages of 2 and 12 years, from £240 per week. ornwall for the weekend? Spending all of Friday night and then most of Sunday in the car isn’t really worth it, even for the most committed surfer. There’s really only one way to do it and that’s to fly. When it’s 45 minutes from Gatwick to Newquay, then a weekend is perfectly possible – quicker even than a trip to the Cotswolds if you’re leaving town on Friday evening.
THE AREA
N
ewquay itself isn’t the most romantic of spots but a few miles down the coast is Mawgan Porth, where we stay in the Bedruthan hotel, a brief taxi ride from the airport, and a slightly longer one from Padstow, Cornwall’s foodie mecca. This part of the world is famed for its surfing, its sunny climate and, of course, its fish and chips.

he place is squarely aimed at families. There’s a playground complete with trampoline and zipwire, as well as a huge soft play area, indoor and outdoor pools (with a separate kids’ pool, unheated, for the brave) as well as a cinema room. It’s a brief stroll down to the beach for surfing lessons and rockpooling. Adults can leave children in the clubs and hit the luxurious spa and its sensory spa garden, and there’s a childfree restaurant for those wanting to take advantage of babysitting service. Don’t miss the hotel’s programme of events and entertainments, which on our visit included a clown in the bar before dinner, freeing up weary parents for a well-deserved cocktail.

e’ll admit it – architecturally, The Bedruthan is not the most appealing building. But once inside, it’s all about the sea views, which are dramatic and eclipse any design. Interior-wise, the theme is midcentury Scandinavia, with lots of blonde wood, splashes of print and colour prints. The restaurant is positioned perfectly with an expanse of windows providing an awe-inspiring outlook over Mawgan Porth beach – and the menu’s big on locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes, as well as kids’ favourites.

e have just let a double fronted house on Durham Place to a fascinating gentleman and his family. The impressive seven bedroom house was on the market for £12,950 per week. Although we were marketing alongside other agents, we had an encouraging selection of prospective tenants and good viewing numbers. In a market where there is a lot of property available it was really exciting to get this result. In this market, beautiful properties that deserve a big price tag have a strong collection of people waiting to see them. These kind of super-prime tenants are serious, they need to move Ω and they are undeterred by Brexit. ◆

ulham attracts all types of buyers looking to set down their roots. We see a diverse mix of people with families, young professionals and professional investors all wanting to live and own a property in the area. Fulham offers a wide variety of properties, with many traditional Victorian houses and flats, as well as swanky new riverside apartments in Imperial Wharf. One thing that all of these properties share is the offering of great investment potential. Investors tend to target new homes closer to the river, while families tend to gravitate towards the more traditional Victorian properties in the area. Buyers view Fulham as a safe bet in any market. At KFH, we work with a number of property developers who specialise in this area of London alone, as the level of demand in Fulham is continuous, with strong and growing prices frequently achievable. ◆

Paul Hyman orn and raised in the exotic location of Ilford in Essex, I had originally wanted to be a marine biologist. I was very into snakes, lizards and fish, until I discovered girls, got bored of my collection and let my piranha eat them all. I’d always been interested in sales and was thrown in at the deep end at an early age when I traded in industrial warehousing and local residential property. The introduction to a whole array of cultures in central London captured my interest and I loved the challenge of creating deals. I have now been in the Bayswater area for thirty years, and I have no idea where the time has gone. Being based here for so long has been an absolute pleasure, after all, what’s not to love about having everything London has to offer at your fingertips?
B
I loved the challenge of creating deals
Hyde Park, one of London’s eight Royal Parks, is remarkable. With 350 acres to explore there is something for everyone, from the wonderful Princess Diana memorial, to Speakers’ Corner and the brilliant British Summer Time concerts. There’s also Portobello Market around the corner, which is always worth a visit, and Oxford Street and Westfield are both only ten minutes away. If you did for some reason want to leave, the Heathrow Express at Paddington can whisk you away in no time. ◆
Jonathan McCormack riginally from Co. Mayo on O the west coast of Ireland, I’ve now been based as an agent in central London for seven years. Prior to this, I worked as an account manager for a corporate services department, dealing with international relocations, so it was natural for me to move into lettings. Without a doubt, the best thing about working in Bayswater are the clients. Everybody here really cares about the area and everyone seems to know everyone, so it’s got a really

lovely community feel – rare for London. Things are looking positive for the lettings market this year. Regardless of what’s currently happening in the wider political sphere, it won’t change the fact that thousands of students will still be looking to move to London later on in the summer. Historically, when there is short term uncertainty in the sales market, the lettings market benefits; after all people still need a place to live! It’s a very exciting time for Bayswater as an area. The redevelopment plans for Queensway are already in full swing, and with Crossrail due to complete in 2018, getting around London will have never been so easy. It’s also a great time for us as we’re relocating to bigger and better premises later on in the summer. We’ll be based at 186 Queensway, so please do pop in and say hello. ◆

MILLION POUND STREETS WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO LIMIT? London's prime property market boom has been unprecedented recently, discovers Nigel Lewis
H
ouse prices within the most desirable streets n the capital have been rising so fast recently that in one area house price have almost doubled in five years. Savills say prices in what it calls North and East Prime London (Shoreditch, Islington, Wapping and Canary Wharf) have risen by 42.1% over the past five years. Other areas of prime London have not been so spectacular, but still extraordinary including Prime Central London (+28%) and Prime North West London (Primrose Hill and St John’s Wood to you and me) at +27.9%. But it’s not all clinking champagne flutes. Some agents say the party may be over as the European referendum, increased Stamp Duty and jittery foreign buyers have reduced demand in these markets. Despite these worries, these percentage increases mean some roads still feature houses for sale at record highs; remember it was only a year ago that a renovated mansion on Upper Brook Street in Mayfair sold for £90m. So what are the other streets in London that can claim such huge prices? Here we reveal where the most expensive residential roads and streets are, based on data from Zoopla.

THE BOLTONS, BROMPTON
Average price: £36.1 million ext on the list is The N Boltons, a squashed oval road in Brompton named after the church within the private communal gardens at its centre. It has just 30 houses but when they come up for sale, bidding wars usually ensue. Last year a mansion built recently on the site of an old telephone exchange sold for £51m. It has seen some famous residents, too,

Average price: £21.9 million axi drivers will know this road as the connecting road T of Belgrave Square to the Hyde Park Corner roundabout. But it’s central position has pushed up prices recently, helped by the Regency houses that line it. It is probably best known as the home the Belgian Embassy and the fact that, during the early noughties, 3-10 Grosvenor Crescent was bought, remodelled and turned into a clutch of huge apartments sold individually for a total of £201m. u

Its most famous home owner to date has been Gracie Fields, the film and stage star of the 1930s. There’s a house for sale with Savills at the moment for £9.95m. HANOVER TERRACE, REGENT’S PARK
Average house price: £11.13m his short road off Regent Park’s Outer Circle was built T in 1822 to a design by John Nash and has been a desirable address ever since. Famous residents have included author HG Wells, composer Vaughan Williams and Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor and wife to the former Edward VIII. u

FAMOUS PLACES London hides a plethora of celebrity homes. These are the most recent to come on the market
NOEL IS SELLING HIS LITTLE VENICE OASIS
oel Gallagher recently dodged the chance to make up with his brother Liam by refusing to get together in Cannes to discuss new Oasis documentary, Supersonic, made by Asif Kapadia, who was behind the award-winning film about Amy Winehouse. The documentary will follow Oasis from their early days through to the release of iconic album Definitely, Maybe, and its film-makers recently called on fellow Mancunians to dig out any home movies of the boys in a school nativity play, which mum Peggy Gallagher fondly recalls. Since leaving the band in 2009, Noel has forged a successful path as a solo artist with new band High Flying Birds. The rocker, 48, ditched the drugs and wild parties to settle down with second wife Sara MacDonald, buying this endof- terrace house in London’s Little Venice in 2010. On the banks of Regent's Canal, he lives there with two sons, but is looking for £11.5m for it. The six bedroom home has a large kitchen and a separate dining room which leads directly out onto a private patio and garden. There’s also a separate mews house with a gym. Dame Diana Rigg was voted the sexiest television star in 2002. These day’s she’s known for her role as Lady Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones. Diana has made some good career choices, and is evidently canny when it comes to property too; she’s just sold her four bedroom terraced house off the Fulham Road and made £2m on the deal; she bought it for £1.2m in 2003, renovated it and recently made £3.2m to spend on a move to smaller, top-floor mansion flat nearby. But she may be horrified to discover that, only weeks after she moved out, the builders have moved in and are tearing the place apart. Sold for £1.2m

WHERE HARRY POTTER GREW UP
K Rowling asked her Twitter followers to keep the plot of her new play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to themselves and allow future audiences to enjoy the plotline. The eighth Harry Potter story picks up 19 years after Lord Voldemort was vanquished. Former boy wizard Daniel Radcliffe isn’t in the new production – he’s been busy making movies. Big film roles have helped him grow a £60m fortune and a hefty property portfolio; he’s known to have at least three Big Apple apartments. Radcliffe grew up at this four bedroom house in Sherbrooke Road, and was reportedly in the bath when he found out he’d won the role of Harry. Despite having a cupboard under the stairs, with a price tag of £1.45m, this property is worlds away from the young wizard’s modest upbringing at 4 Privet Drive. hen singer Gracie Fields turned up at the opening of this theatre in 1937 to cut the ribbon, she attracted a crowd of 10,000 fans. Gracie Fields was a top box-office draw and the highest paid actress in Britain. According to the Kentish Mercury, Fields – who went onto become a popular forces entertainer - described the new Greenwich Granada Theatre as “proper posh” and then said in a rich

Lancashire accent: “Well, I don’t suppose you want to hear me talking, you want to hear me sing. Shove a piano on the stage, lads!” Actress Joan Collins loved the Saturday morning pictures and, living nearby at the time, she recalled the opening night in 1937: “The whole Granada building was dark and I was sitting on my father’s shoulder... all of a sudden, all of the outside lights went on. Everybody cheered and screamed and clapped... and then Gracie Fields came and sang some of her popular songs. It was very special.” But it’s magic didn’t endure. The theatre closed during the late 1960s and was redeveloped into flats about a decade ago. This three bedroom, first floor apartment is on the market for £1.55m. he most famous restaurant with connections to the Rolling Stones is former bassist Bill Wyman’s Sticky Fingers in Kensington. But The Gas Works off the Kings Road is also a Stones favourite – famed for its starry client list but terrible food. During the 1970s and 80s the restaurant attracted everyone from gangsters to royalty and it was claimed that Princess Margaret used to have secret liaisons there with notorious Fulham gangster John Bindon. But The Gasworks has now gone and in its place are two newly-renovated flats.
