his month is all about Alexander McQueen. As the V&A prepares for the long-awaited opening of Savage Beauty on 14 March, a flurry of books and even a play about the designer are hitting the headlines. The exhibition was a sell-out during its run in New York (read our preview on page 20 for Martin Roth's account of it attracting even people who never go to exhibitions) and here in its expanded incarnation it is likely to outsell even last year's record-breaking David Bowie exhibition. Which is really saying something in museum terms. Additional dates have already been added and my quick look at bookings indicates that if you want to see it on a Saturday, you'll have to wait until late May. Huge, popular shows are a big part of the V&A's future, as director Martin Roth tells us in our interview with him on page 26. There are , however, some cultural highlights this month that have nothing to do with McQueen, or fashion. One

11 NH_MARCH15_EDS_LETTER.indd 11

of the most exciting pieces of theatre is The Muse, set and performed in Leighton House, which is becoming more animated as a venue in the wake of last year's sitespecific production of Hedda Gabler. The Muse sets out to reveal a little-known side of Lord Leighton's life and to recreate one of his famed soirees, focusing on his muse Dorothy Dene, who was briefly a household name in the late 19th century. It's a dark and intriguing tale – read about it on page 31. Otherwise, we've got the usual mix of beautiful things to buy and wear, places to go and properties to drool over. Enjoy March. u

ccording to gllery owner Serena Morton, 'the real art market is the female market'. It's the women with their own money, buying beautiful pieces that they like. They don't haggle and they're not motivated by investment. hen Martin Roth, director of the V&A, introduced this exhibition to hundreds of eager fashion press last year, one personal story stood out. During Savage Beauty's sell-out run at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, Roth had a stopover at JFK airport and he calculated enough time to leave the airport, see the exhibition and return for his connecting flight. The surly border guard was unimpresed. A routine interrogation as to Roth's intentions on entering the city culminated in a single word: 'no'. Roth assumed he was being refused permission to enter the United States, but the 'no' referred instead to his chance of getting a ticket. 'It's been sold out for months,' said the surly border guard. For Roth, this was an important moment. Savage Beauty was no niche, fashion pack attraction, it was the museum's biggest-selling show ever, attracting record numbers of visitors in its three month residence.

SAVAGE BEAUTY was no niche, FASHION PACK ATTRACTION,

it was the museum's BIGGEST SELLING SHOW EVER

Even border police were going to see it. Judith Thurman of The New Yorker had said: "even if you never bother with fashion shows, go to this one," and clearly New York had taken her at her word – the museum had to open on Mondays specially to cope with the unstoppable demand and queues lasted for hours. Alexander McQueen is widely held to be one of the most talented designers of a generation. His extraordinary creative talent and sense of innovation were innate and backed up by a profound grasp of tailoring and an eclectic range of influences. McQueen's catwalk shows were notorious for their use

of unconventional materials – glass, leather, feathers and boning were all commonplace – and McQueen's fans included such sartorial eccentrics as Bjork, Lady Gaga and, of course, the inimitable fashion supremo Isabella Blow. Four years after New York, the London incarnation of this insanely popular exhibition is a third larger. Curated by Claire Wilcox, the V&A's senior curator of fashion, it features 30 additional garments, including some rare early pieces, lent by private individuals and collectors such as Katy England and Annabelle Neilson. There are further pieces from the Isabella Blow Collection and the House of Givenchy, and a whole new London-focused section focusing on McQueen's fledgling development as a designer. Roth says: "I am thrilled that this magnificent show is coming to London and feel passionately that the V&A is its natural home. Lee Alexander McQueen presented his work here during his lifetime and studied the museum's wide-ranging public collections of tailoring, painting, art, photography and books as inspiration for his visionary

the V&A’s reputation as an innovative international stage for art – and which attracted Roth in the first place. ‘The V&A has a very strange story,’ explains Roth in his guttural German accent. ‘The museum started right in the middle of the 19th century, the time of all the social movements of the 19th century when a lot of brilliant new ideas were emerging. The reason why it’s so important is because my predecessors didn’t collect art like their peers did in other museums. Yes, they assembled a very beautiful traditional art collection, but at the same time the museum was about new, applied arts, like engineering, architecture and fashion. It’s like a double DNA.’ This ‘double DNA’ has continued at the V&A ever since, symbiotically inspiring the next generation of London’s designers from this corner of South Kensington. ‘In the past, it was just apple trees here,’ says Roth. ‘Now you have Imperial College, the Royal College of Arts, the Royal Albert Hall – all of which was paid for with profits from the Great Exhibition in 1851.’ As a result, Exhibition Road was born, creating a cultural epicentre for

peak to anyone who visited the David Bowie Is exhibition at the V&A last year and you’re probably going to be stuck listening to them gushing for a long time. A roaring success, the exhibition drew a record 311,000 visitors before it finally closed its doors back in August. Now it’s touring the world, taking up temporary residence in Toronto, Sao Paolo, Chicago, Paris and the Netherlands, and continuing to pull in the crowds wherever it goes. The brains behind this blockbuster exhibition is Martin Roth, the museum’s straight-talking German director. ‘It was originally a small display that I wanted to show my colleagues,’ explains Roth. ‘The more I learned about the exhibition, the more I convinced my team to make it bigger and bigger. They said it wasn’t worth it. But it wasn’t because I knew it would be a success; it was just fun for me! I liked it. We were not at all prepared for that level of success. Not at all.’ It’s blockbuster exhibitions like David Bowie Is that have maintained

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE London. ‘I believe in something called genius loci,’ muses Roth, ‘that there’s a kind of spirit to a certain area. I don’t mean that my predecessors are going around as ghosts here – but sometimes I think about it. It’s more that the environment here symbolised the future of London. I think it still does.’ This future came in the form of countless burgeoning artists and designers who would come to the V&A for inspiration, capitalising on Prince Albert’s legacy. The most notable example is Alexander McQueen, who would visit the museum’s extensive archives as a student, and is now the focus of the V&A’s

latest exhibition, Savage Beauty. ‘There are 30,000 Imperial College students here every day, producing the future,’ says Roth. ‘I know a lot of the designers at Masserati, Ferrari, Porche etc – 95% were trained here at the RCA. It’s a great atmosphere here. Sure, South Kensington is a very bourgeois area, but at the same time it’s very vibrant. You don’t always see it here in the street, but it’s here. That’s one of the reasons why I like it.’ It’s this inspirational atmosphere that Roth hopes to replicate in east London, where a new outpost of the V&A is set to open this year. ‘It’s definitely not going to be like Tate Britain and Tate Modern. I don’t want to have that line where here everything is before 1945 and there is everything after,’ reveals Roth. ‘East London will be more out of the applied idea of the V&A – there will be a research institution, which will be called our ‘thing tank’, and a big space for exhibitions. Probably most important though is the synergy with UAL – all the fashion design David Bowie Is drew students will a record 311,000 be there visitors last year

in the same building. What we want to do is work with these practitioners.’ Adding to London’s already fertile cultural landscape, this new branch of the V&A is just one more reason why the city has evolved into a global art hub in recent years. ‘When I came for the first time to London, it was not this exciting,’ Roth recalls. ‘There were artistic

29 NH_MARCH15_MartinRoth.indd 29

pockets like the King’s Road for example, but now there’s this kind of overall excitement. East London in particular is thrilling.’ So is channeling this thrilling atmosphere Roth’s vision for the new V&A here? ‘I’m not really good at visions,’ he chuckles. ‘There was a German Chancellor, Helmut Schmidt, who once said that if you have a vision, go see a doctor. For me it’s more about reality, and making things happen.’ And when Martin Roth is in charge, you can rest assured they most certainly will. u Savage Beauty is running at the V&A until 2 August; vam.ac.uk

ARTS & CULTURE / STAGE THEATRE PREVIEW

THE MUSE Palimpsest Theatre returns to Leighton House with a new play that seeks to recreate past events in ghostly glory WORDS pendle harte

circumstances and a resulting burial in Kensal Green cemetery (a stone’s throw from Tozer’s own house), it seemed fated. Even though she had never actually written a play before, this was clearly right up Tozer’s street. The Muse is a two-hour piece set on a single evening in Leighton House in 1886. It sets out to animate the space with what actually went on in the studio; the audience is encouraged to come armed with backstory information from a clever accompanying website. Leighton was famous for his soirees and Tozer explains: ‘I want people to feel that they have voyeuristically crept into something that actually happened.’ She’s keen on the idea of voyeurism in theatre and alternatives

atherine Tozer, creative director of Palimpsest Theatre, is attracted to anything gothic and ghostly. Her obsession with Victoriana and her long-term love of Leighton House led to the site-specific staging of Hedda Gabler there last year, where she played Hedda in an intriguingly loaded production that marked the space’s first foray into theatre. So in the wake of that, when the curator and archivists at Leighton House called Tozer in to discuss a possible dramatization about a little-known part of Lord Leighton’s life, she was keen from the start. And when it transpired that the story featured a nude model whose colourful life ended in suspicious

ARTS & CULTURE / STAGE to the traditional stage, but less keen on some of the attributes of regular immersive theatre. “I don’t want to be dragged around a freezing factory. This is a glamorous night out,” she insists. The evening will kick off with a Leighton soiree-style cocktail before people are invited to take their seats upstairs The story centres around Leighton’s relationship with model Dorothy Dene, who ‘was really the first ever It Girl’, according to Tozer. ‘It has become an accepted art history fact that Frederic, Lord Leighton, was gay, but we’re setting out to challenge that. In fact there’s a lot of evidence that Dorothy was actually his partner.’ Bernard Shaw was a regular guest at Leighton House and it has been suggested that Leighton and Dene's relationship was the model for Pygmalion.

Dene – born less glamorously Ada Pullen in 1859 – was one of five working class sisters who became an actress and – briefly – a household name. Her face was on soap boxes and cigarette cards; there was a Dorothy Dene doll; she went to America and was friends with the similarly alliterative Lillie Langtry. Evidence shows that Leighton adored and respected her, but as President of the Royal Academy he couldn’t marry a working class girl. ‘The play questions what it is to be beautiful and what caustic effects it can have. Can she be taken seriously? It was

a problem to be poor and beautiful. And we can see the beginning of the path we’re on today of chasing fame for fame’s sake,’ says Tozer. Leighton provides financially for Dene on his death but she is no longer a society lady and her death in 1899 comes as a result of multiple complications, possibly connected to an abortion. Ticket holders will know details of Dene’s life and death in advance, thanks to an email link to a carefully designed website sent out two days before the show. There’s something ghostly about animating a space with its past inhabitants and this piece is set to exploit that to the max. u Palimpsest’s The Muse is at Leighton House, 12 Holland Park Road W14 on 13,14,19,20,23,24,25, 27 and 28 March. veryone is talking about Alexander McQueen. But not E just about the clothes. Coinciding with the long-awaited opening of Savage Beauty at the V&A this month is a controversial new biography of the designer by Andrew Wilson, which exposes so much despicable behaviour that the museum's shop apparently had to cancel the order placed with Fourth Estate becauses the new regime at the McQueen label won't be associated with any of it. The drugs, the mental health issues, the suicide – none of the dark side of genius fits with a brand that now has Kate Middleton as its ambassador. Also in the spotlight with all this focus on McQueen is John Galliano, another East End working class boy whose unstoppable talent shot him into the epicentre of the fashion world. In the wake of Galliano's first show since being sacked by Dior in 2011, Dana Thomnas's new book Gods and Kings tells the story of both designers' rises and falls. It kicks off with Galliano's drunken anti-semitism and recounts the less-than-glamorous underbelly of the fashion industry. Former model-turned journalist Thomas was there in Paris when both designers arrived from London to take on their huge industry-defining roles, and she has interviewed more than 100 people who were close to the designers to produce this large, well-researched tome. Galliano and McQueen weren't simply driven and gifted: they wanted to revolutionise fashion in a way no-one had in decades. And for a while, they succeeded. u ●GODS AND KINGS by Dana Thomas, published by Allen Lane, £25

MY STYLE ICON

… is Frida Kahlo. Beautifully spirited and bold. For me, it’s not simply her style, but also the passion for her work which was open and honest.

MY FAVOURITE ITEM OF CLOTHING EVER … is a fabulous grey waisted suit by John Galliano that I bought in the 90s.

n 1994, Nicki and Peter Kay opened tomfoolery, a small gallery in Muswell Hill, that became one of the first, well-known contemporary jewellery boutiques in London representing an array of artistic influenced unique jewellery from predominantly British designers. These days the shop is run by their daughter, Laura who was handed the reins in 2011. Though one of three sisters, Laura always knew she would be the one to run the boutique, having worked there on and off since she was 15. Despite enjoying a career in styling and production for high end brands such as Hermès and Liberty, in 2011 Laura was drawn inexorably back to Muswell Hill. One ambition she has realised since taking over the shop is the design and production of a collection by tomfoolery, entitled metier. Laura feels confident that the

to the stock and introducing the Wedding Showcase three years ago. ‘I noticed customers coming to see us to purchase “unique” engagement rings,’ says Laura. ‘I thought it would make sense to start the showcase and it has been a great success gathering attention from customers all over the UK.’ An opportunity to browse some truly spectacular and orginal designs, the showcase acts as an opportunity for those who wish to find an engagement ring, or other items for their wedding day, that will set them apart from the usual princesscut-diamond-solitaire wearing crowd whilst retaining the quality and luxury needed for an truly timeless piece.

collection will be a success as, after two years of running the show, she has really come to grips with what her clients are looking for. ‘We use mixed metals, predominantly raw white gold due to its natural tones which is far more wearable than the brash more commercial rhodium finish which can be harsh on skin tones,’ confides Laura. ‘metier uses less traditional raw, unusually cut natural diamonds and coloured precious stones alongside tonal designs to make the ring feel timeless. Every stone we use is unique and very hard to source again.’ During the past few years, Laura has made a few changes to the identity of the boutique, adding a more alternative mix of fine, contemporary, fashion and craft

Designed to look both attractive and stylish, each pair he makes is corrective, supportive and tailored to each customer’s needs. Tony has a staff of 12 and can make footwear for any occasion, in recordtiming.

What materials do you use? Tony has a vast selection of materials in many colours and prints. He also uses animal skins – crocodile, snake, stingray, ostrich – which are mainly sourced from Italy.

How does the process work? Here, we measure each customer’s feet, take photographs of them and then make impressions. Orthotics can be made if needed. Then, the client picks a style – or creates a new one.

What are your most popular styles – for women and men? For women, a slip-on court shoe. For men, an Oxford full brogue. We can design a man’s footwear to increase his height up to six inches!

Celebrity endorsements are important to any business, and that applies to us too! What do you like about your location on New Cavendish Street? It’s busy and very trendy. What have you got coming up for 2015? We have just received 20,000 exciting skins – leather and suede in thousands of colours and prints. We also have a new range of fashionable lasts arriving; these make the shape of the shoe and therefore many new designs will be available. u

What is the most common foot complaint you come across? It’s the one where customers have one foot bigger than the other. They find it difficult to source readymade shoes that fit. One shoe is generally too tight whilst the other is too loose.

Instead, it’s a deeplypenetrating, skin-altering therapy that will actively work to plump up your sallow face and visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles. The trick is in the technology. The machine then uses ultrasound rays to send the moisturising minerals through the masque and into your cells. Yes, it does create a slight scratching sensation, the clay might provoke a tiny bit of claustrophobia and the ultrasound makes my forehead itch temporarily – but oh isn’t it lovely to feel the work happening to my face. he recent Paris Couture catwalks were awash with Florals, from Chanel’s decoupage fantasy to Valentino’s dreamy gauze creations. I tend to feel a little frivolous at this time of year too and nothing cheers more than a quirky, pretty bit of packaging. From these cute Japonesque tweezers to the Nails inc blossom nail polish, spring has sprung in my make-up bag.

It also helps that all these products are hard-working investment buys. I’m frivolous, but not foolish. Although I’m usually not a fan of overtly-scented make-up, a hint of rose is fine by me and the smell of this limited edition Chanel blush reminds me of the glamour of my grandmother’s dressing table (and is just the right shade of soft pink my pale winter skin needs). When it comes to skincare the Chantecaille Rose de Mai face oil is where the beauty buzz is right now, use instead of, or underneath moisturiser for a glorious glow. u

ABSOLUTELY / PROMOTION 7 Reasons to...

choose strength training 1. YOU WILL BURN MORE CALORIES Strength training, unlike running and other slow cardio, builds muscle and muscle burns more calories per day. For each pound of muscle you gain your body will burn an additional 35-50 calories each day. You do the math.

2. YOU WILL LOSE MORE FAT ‘Joggers’ tend to lose both fat and muscle, which doesn’t necessarily improve your shape and makes you more likely to gain the lost pounds back quicker. Weight training protects the muscle, which in turn torches more fat.

3. YOUR CLOTHES WILL FIT BETTER A better way of measuring your results than simply staring at the scales, is to see how your clothes fit. 1lb of muscle is more dense than 1lb of fat, takes less space and gives you a perkier shape.

STRONG IS FOR EVERYONE

R

Why more of us are heading straight to the weights

esistance training is a hot topic at the moment, particularly for women. While most of us will probably agree that some form of resistance training is beneficial – perhaps even essential – opinion is still hugely divided as to what type, how often and at what intensity is best. Some people will tell you that women should not lift heavy weights as it will build an unsightly muscular physique, others will tell us that the opposite is true, while yet others believe that you can get all the challenge your body needs through various forms of primarily bodyweight training methods including pilates and yoga. In truth, all approaches have their merits, and regardless of the differing opinions, the overall shift towards women and resistance training is a hugely positive one, with benefits such as improved posture, increased strength, fat loss and increased muscle tone. A combination is probably optimal for the

right balance of muscle tone, strength and flexibility. Although most of what we read about resistance training focuses predominantly on its aesthetic benefits, it is perhaps more important to consider the postural and structural benefits it brings. We will always have a degree of imbalance, but over time many of us rely too heavily on the over-active muscles at the front of our body, while the hugely important muscles at the back of the body become lethargic and often under-developed. A big problem is prolonged periods of sitting, where hips tighten and the back slouches and rounds, weakening the back of the body. Increased muscle tone in the muscles at the back of the body, which are collectively referred to as the posterior chain, is essential if your goal is to look good but also to move well and to live pain-free. You will probably find that, done correctly with short rest periods, strength-based training will significantly elevate your heart rate and provide you with a decent cardiovascular workout at the same time. u

63 _ADV_NH_MARCH15_W10.indd 63

4. YOU WILL HAVE BETTER POSTURE Develop good structural balance and your muscles will be better coordinated and contribute towards correct posture by assisting in the prevention of muscle atrophy and injury as we age.

5. YOU WILL REDUCE YOUR RISK OF INJURY, BACK PAIN AND ARTHRITIS By improving the strength of not only your muscles but also your connective tissues you will improve joint stability, flexibility and help prevent injury.

6. YOU WILL DECREASE YOUR RISK OF OSTEOPOROSIS Strength training can increase spinal bone mineral density and enhance bone modeling. Combined with a balanced nutritional program it can significantly reduce the risk of osteoporosis as we get older.

7. YOU WILL FEEL HAPPIER AND MORE CONFIDENT As a result you will be healthier with a stronger immune system, look better and, most importantly, feel better too. This will make everyday daily tasks a little easier and life a whole lot more enjoyable.

RECIPE

HOT CROSS BUNS R e c i p e b y R oy L e v y of Gail’s Artisan Bakery INGREDIENTS The Buns: 20g fresh yeast • 1 tsp caster sugar • 400g plain flour • 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon • 0.5 tsp freshly ground nutmeg 1 tsp mixed spice • 200ml whole milk • 70g caster sugar • 1 large egg • 70g soft unsalted butter • 40g sultanas • 40g dry currants 40g dried unsweetened cranberries 70g mixed peel • 0.5 tsp fine sea salt Cross Topping: 200g plain flour • 230g icing sugar 2 tbsp olive oil • 3 tbsp milk Syrup: 300g caster sugar • 200g water • 1 whole nutmeg • 1 whole star anise 1 whole clove • 0.5 vanilla pod METHOD Making The Buns

01 In a large mixing bowl melt yeast with a tablespoon of whole milk and a teaspoon of caster sugar. 02 In a separate bowl, sieve the flour with the spices. 03 Add the spiced flour to the yeast. Keep adding the rest of the milk, the sugar and egg. 04 Begin to bind the mixture together using your hands, then add the butter a chunk at a time whilst kneading the dough. 05 Continue kneading until you get a smooth, shiny dough. 06 Add the salt and fruits and continue kneading. 07 Cover the bowl with a tea towel and leave at room temperature for 1.5 hours, until it doubles in size. 08 Divide into 20 pieces, roll into shape on a surface to create smooth buns. 09 Arrange on a baking tray lined with a baking paper. Cover the tray with a clean tea towel and leave to rise. 10 When the buns are ready make an eggwash by whisking 1 whole egg, 1 egg yolk and a teaspoon of milk. Brush the buns and leave to dry out for 10 minutes. Brush again. 11 Pre heat the oven to 200°C. ◆

Making the X topping

01 Using a hand whisk, combine all ingredients into a smooth paste. 02 Fill a piping bag with the topping mixture, cut a small hole. 03 Pipe thin crosses on top of the buns on the tray and pop it into the oven. ◆

FOOD & DRINK / RECIPES

CHINESE-STYLE DOUGHNUTS makes 15

y strongest childhood memories are of the kitchen – and playing a game with my sisters – daring each other to run to the kitchen counter, which was heads and shoulders taller than us, and stretch out a fat hand to reach for the plate of freshly baked almond cookies. The prize was sweet, but if Mum caught us we’d forfeit dessert and treats for a week – for being disobedient and greedy. The rule was we had to wait until after dinner to enjoy an almond cookie and for me that was torture and worth the risk to acquire one commando-style.

01 Pour the milk into a medium saucepan and warm over a gentle heat. Pour the milk into a large bowl, add the melted butter, 75g of the sugar and mix well. Add the eggs and mix again. Then add the yeast and stir into the mixture, which will start foaming as the yeast is reacting to the warm liquids. 02 In a separate large bowl, sift the plain flour and make a well in the centre. Pour the wet mixture into the flour and stir to combine into a thick batter. Cover the bowl with cling film and set aside in a warm place for 1 hour until the dough has doubled in size. 03 Preheat the oil to 180°C in a wok over a high heat. 04 After an hour, heat a large saucepan and fill with half of vegetable oil. Scoop some of the batter in your hand and, using the gap between your thumb and index finger, squeeze out a ball of dough approx. the size of two grapes. Add to the hot oil and cook for 4–5 minutes. Using a slotted spoon scoop out the fried doughnuts and leave to drain on kitchen paper. Cook the remaining doughnuts in batches. 05 Transfer the cooked doughnuts onto a plate and gradually drizzle over the condensed milk then sprinkle with caster and icing sugar. u

When cooking with hot oil it’s important to drop the ball of dough carefully into the hot oil. Drop the dough close to the oil so the oil will not splash back on you.

FOOD & DRINK / RECIPES

PAN-FRIED PORK DUMPLINGS makes 12-13

• 1 teaspoon caster sugar • 1/2 tablespoon oyster sauce • 1 teaspoon sesame oil • 2 tablespoons potato starch • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 50ml water For the dumpling wrappers: • 110ml boiling water • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 200g strong white bread flour, plus extra for dusting To serve: • Chinese red vinegar and ginger • strips, mixed together to form a dipping sauce METHOD

ur grandmother was a huge fan of this dish because the dumplings could be cooked in three different ways – boiled, steamed or fried. Her favourite cooking method was to deep-fry them as it gave a crunchy texture that contrasted nicely with the juicy meaty centre. However, we prefer to pan-fry and steam them for a healthier taste. Traditionally served during Chinese New Year, because they resemble gold ingots, our grandmother used to hide a coin inside each dumpling – that is, until one got stuck in my throat and I had to be rushed to hospital. Thankfully the coin was coughed out,

O

NH_MARCH15_Recipes.indd 72

but from then on my grandmother banned all coins from being hidden inside dumplings – even if it meant breaking the Chinese tradition. Preparation time: 25 minutes plus 10 minutes resting time Cooking time: 7–8 minutes INGREDIENTS • 1/4 Chinese cabbage, core removed and finely chopped • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 50g chives, finely chopped • 300g minced pork • 1 garlic clove, grated • 5cm piece of fresh root ginger, grated • 1 tablespoon Shaoxing rice wine • 1/2 tablespoon light soy sauce

01 First make the dumpling wrappers. Measure the boiling water into a jug, add the salt and stir to dissolve. Sift the flour 2–3 times into a large mixing bowl, pour in the salted water and mix to a stiff dough with a wooden spoon. Turn out the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until smooth. Return the dough to the bowl, cover with a tea towel and set aside to rest at room temperature for 10 minutes. 02 Shape the dough into a long log and then divide into 13 pieces approx. 5cm wide. Roll into balls, flatten and roll into 7–8cm circles using a rolling pin. Arrange in to a stack on a plate, dusting with flour between each individual wrapper, then cover with a clean tea towel and set aside. 03 To make the filling, place the chopped cabbage in a large mixing bowl and stir in the salt and chives. Squeeze the cabbage mixture to extract as much water as possible and drain well. Return the cabbage to the mixing bowl and add the pork, garlic, ginger, Shaoxing wine, soy sauce, sugar, oyster sauce, sesame oil and potato starch. Mix until the filling is sticky in consistency. 04 To assemble the dumplings, wet your finger and moisten the outer rim of a dumpling wrapper. Place a heaped tablespoon of filling in the centre and fold in half to form a half-moon shape. Seal the edge by pleating it from right to left. Do this by using your left thumb to push the wrapper to the right, and your right thumb and index finger to pinch the two layers of pastry together; this creates a nice wavy edge. Continue until the entire dumpling is sealed. 05 To cook, heat the oil in a large lidded frying pan over a medium heat. Drop the dumplings in and fry them for 1 minute on each side until they have a golden crust. Pour in 50ml water, cover the pan with a lid and cook until the water has evaporated, approx. 5–6 minutes. Reduce the heat to low then remove the lid and cook for a further minute. 06 Serve with Chinese red vinegar and ginger strips as a dipping sauce. u

Always check that the minced pork has very little liquid/juice. The meat must be super-fresh to hold the filling together. If you have a mincer you can mince fresh pork loin too.

FOOD & DRINK / REVIEW butter; the beetroot starter features almond cheese, a fermented substitute substance, and everything is cooked in duck or goose fat, or coconut oil. There is no new world wine at all – it's a small list of biodynamic wines from specialised European producers, everything available by the glass, implying that overindulgence is frowned upon. We start with beetroot and almond cheese, a curiuosly cheese-like noncheese dyed with beetroot and cutely served on a square slate. A dish of scallops with apples and parsnip is tasty. 'All garnishes are edible,' announces the menu, so we eat the small flowers too. Main courses are fairly pricy at around £25 and my trout with tiger prawns, bisque and aioli is fine, as is the beef short rib itself, though its accompanying apple is strange. Desserts are decadent despite the no sugar rule – a chocolate orange

ine, processed food is bad for us. If it doesn't give us cancer it will make us fat. Nobody would argue with the assertion that a diet high in 'natural' ingredients is one to aim for. But the idea of eating paleo style – aka the 'caveman' diet – in 21st century west London is based on the notion that humans evolved for millions of years eating lots of meat and vegetables without any grains, sugar or dairy, so why start now? Agriculture, having only been around for about 10,000 years, is a relative neophyte in the scheme of things. Some people take this disdain for progress further and refuse to wear shoes, for instance, or use treadmills or chairs – though those people would probably not visit restaurants. At Pure

'ALL GARNISHES

Taste, the paleo philosophy is applied exclusively to diet. Still, channeling the past in such literal fashion remains a touch problematic. In the pre-stone age, there may have been life on what is now Westbourne Grove and people may have been eating hunter-gatherer-type foods on today's prime central London real estate, but it's unlikely that these would have included almonds, coconuts or avocados, nor olives or truffles and certainly not coffee or wine. Still, at 'London's first paleolithic fine dining restaurant', the focus is on ingredients that could have existed somewhere on the planet, pre-cutlery, two million years ago. But we are not talking slabs of meat and dirty root vegetables. This is a menu of delicate dishes with no dairy, no gluten and no sugar. Focaccia is made with almond flour and comes with avocado

ARE edible,' announces THE MENU ganache is a clever mix of avocado, honey and cocoa powder, while a deconstructed banoffee features a honeyed banana and coconut ice cream. The menu includes a helpful key for people following a variety of obscure diets other than the standard paleolithic one, all very serious-sounding ones. This is an undeniably faddy outfit, and an ambitious one, and if it belongs anywhere it is certainly belongs in Westbourne Grove. Good luck to it. u

tephen Clasper Interiors is a luxury interior design and bespoke furniture making practice with a difference. Unlike other interior design companies, Stephen Clasper delivers top class interior design and fine furniture as one practice. The company founded by Stephen Clasper in 1995, has a focus on ultra-high net worth clients in London, the Home Counties and worldwide and includes design and furniture for exceptional residential properties in the UK as well as luxury villas and yachts. Central to the excellence of Stephen Clasper Interiors is the way they work with clients to tailor the designs to their exact needs. Clients can depend on Stephen Clasper to manage the whole process, right from conception to completion. The process itself is a creative and rewarding time for the client due to the designers understanding of all their client’s needs. The holistic approach of the company to interiors, combined with their knowledge, passion and hard work means clients receive an unrivalled service in creating exceptional, elegant interiors. Stephen Clasper himself is the central force of the creative side of the business. Having studied at Chelsea

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

School of Art, he then travelled around the world for a number of years, visiting exotic places helping inspire his future designs. After travelling the world, Stephen began designing furniture and interiors specialising now in the high end residential market. Based up until recently in central London, a relocation to Surrey to expand the manufacturing capacity saw them getting involved with large new build projects in the Surrey

area. Now however their ambitions are focusing back on the London market where their work sits comfortably alongside the high end interiors that are so familiar in the best locations of central London. Stephen Clasper says: “I’ve always loved art, design and the process of creating something from nothing. I’m passionate about thinking differently and I like to surprise our clients with what’s

HOMES & INTERIORS / DESIGN CLIENTS will never SEE AN INTERIOR quite like theirs in ANY OTHER HOME possible to achieve with their properties. Above all I’m proud that thanks to our talented team, they will never see an interior quite like theirs in any other home. Every client is different, and we really get immersed in understanding their lifestyle. The interiors are just one part of the luxury lifestyle experience which we offer, enhancing both the home and the client’s day to day life. I always try to design projects using the very best materials available to us, from beautiful veneers, gorgeous fabrics, leathers, the products available to us are unlimited and contribute to the magic of high quality bespoke design. Of course budgets vary on every project but we will always look at all the options and engineer each project to suit the client. Bespoke furniture is essential to the final look of a project and is really what sets our practice apart from others in the industry. We have an unrivalled control of this element which

does not restrict our imagination.” Recent projects completed by Stephen Clasper Interiors include a house in Kensington (pictured) and a vast new build in Hertfordshire. The Kensington project delivered a touch of urban luxury with a unique style to the property, giving it a luxury feel. The addition of uniquely designed bespoke furniture to complement the many items sourced from high end suppliers has achieved an interior you will not see anywhere else. Notable features

83 C&A_MARCH15_StephenClasper_DPS.indd 83

are included throughout the property and there is not one room that does not express this. For the Hertfordshire project, a living and entertaining space was central to the clients brief. Stephen Clasper used rich fabrics and wallpapers to give the entertaining rooms a sense of glamour. The focal point of the entertaining rooms was the hand crafted champagne bar. The bar incorporates chrome and mirror finishes and leather upholstery. As the economy continues to recover, 2015 is set to be a busy year for Stephen Clasper Interiors, with many exciting projects in the future. u ● Stephen Clasper Interiors +44 (0)1932 570 995 stephen@stephenclasper.co.uk stephenclasper.co.uk

ove him or hate him, Russell Brand's L exuberant language and expressive voice work brilliantly for children. Taking away the swearing, but keeping a measured amount of anger, this retelling of The Pied Piper of Hamelin is the first of a future series of Trickster Tales and it makes an entertaining – and highly moral – read. Chris Riddell's brilliantly spiky illustrations convey the terror of the rats and give the piper a Clockwork Orange-ish sartorial swagger. any dream of getting out of the education arms race, but Tessa Lumley actually did. She shipped her family from London to Morayshire where her two girls now attend Gordonstoun. In a letter to the principal she wrote: “There was a moment when Alice was nine and I found myself standing at her school gates wondering if the world had gone mad. Parents were discussing tutors, what their children were and were not reading, what extra-curricular activities they did or should do. The London academic process allows only certain kinds of children to shine — the lucky few who are either highly intelligent or highly diligent or both. Anyone else is liable to fail in a system where they are competing with hundreds for tens of places.” Andrew Johnson, headmaster of Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, couldn’t agree more. “At somewhere like Winchester (where Johnson was head of modern

languages for ten years) a very bright tenyear-old boy might not feel very bright.” Gordonstoun has a 200-acre wooded campus; the school even has its own yacht and is famed for its unique outdoor education curriculum. Stonyhurst has a whopping 680-acre campus (St Pauls’ much-envied site by the Thames in contrast is a paltry 43 acres). Northern boarding schools are generally cheaper and likely to be more generous with scholarships and bursaries. Stonyhurst has an endowment that allows them to give away £2.3 million a year. Tessa Lumley finished her letter with this: “Most importantly, both Alice and Emily have flourished. They have grown and matured. They are being robustly and effectively educated — but they are also, crucially for me, being encouraged to be children: adventurous, inquisitive and occasionally intensely muddy. But, best of all, they are happy. Without happiness, surely it would be impossible for them to fulfill their full potential.” Makes you think, doesn’t it? u

89 CHIS_MARCH15_Education_v2.indd 89

I want my son to go to a top pre-prep in North London – should I get him tutored for the 4+ assessment?

o tutor, or not to tutor? That is the question! T Unfortunately as with most of parenting, there is no hard and fast rule. It is entirely dependent on the ability of your child, the amount of ‘educational play’ they have experienced – either with yourselves or someone with a native English, well-educated background and your child’s rate of development. Although some parents do see tutoring as an absolute from their child’s first words, I am keen to advocate a balanced approach. Pre-preps look at a child’s character and ability to interact with other children, as well as their ability to count up to 20, recognise colours and shapes and recite the alphabet. To develop a child’s character as well as mental ability it is key for them to combine this learning with fun, knocks and grazes. If you are concerned with your child’s progress during their early years by all means seek advice and do opt for some ‘educational play’ to help develop their senses, social ability and skill set. If however, you are keen to opt for a more stringent programme of formalised learning during the toddler years, I must leave this to your prerogative. I will say though that I would far rather see my two little boys laughing and learning through games and fun, than having bags under their eyes before they even reach the joys of 7+ assessments. u

utting out majestically over the cliff edge above the crashing waves, Curtain Bluff is the Manderley of the Caribbean. Built in the 1960s by American horticulturist Howard Hulford, it nestles impressively amongst the rainforest on the southern coast of Antigua, dominating the ‘bluff’, or rocky promontory, upon which it sits. And while it operates a five-star hotel, it also doubles as a home for the Hulford family, giving it the sense of a glamorous 50s house party with timeless appeal. Now a 72-roomed home from home, it attracts a whole range of celebrities, from Eric Clapton to Giorgio Armani, all looking for it’s trademark simple, elegant luxury rather than an uber-glossy getaway. Many of the guests here are repeat ones, with 65% returning year after year for the old world grandeur which pervades the place. As a result, the staff welcomes them back as members of the family. And Curtain Bluff really is a family – the hotel strives to engage the local community in Old Road as possible, offering jobs to generations of families, even putting some of them through college in the US. Instead of giving tips, guests are encouraged to contribute to the Old Road fund which contributes to these programmes. Philanthropy aside, Curtain Bluff has plenty of other features to recommend it, particularly those

bestowed by Nature. The hotel’s classic colonial architecture here sits in 20 acres of gardens, all sandwiched between two stunning beaches. Each engulfed by a different ocean, the two beaches are completely different in character. Choose from the tranquil, turquoise one perfect for sunbathing or the rugged one where the waves dramatically crash against the cliffs spraying salty clouds – a perfect view for balmy candlelit dinners. These sumptuous five-course dinners feature the hotel’s signature combination of French and Caribbean cuisine, filled with plenty of fresh fish hooked straight from the ocean, from Antiguan lobster tail to the King Fish and Wahoo I caught during the day’s deep sea fishing expedition. But these dinners aren’t just exceptional quality, they’re also great value, being included in the all-inclusive costing at the hotel. In fact, everything here from the exquisite food to the endless rum punches are included in the price. We loved the laid-back buffet lunches in the beachside restaurant and the traditional afternoon tea served on the stone Sugar Mill terrace overlooking the gardens, but dinner here is the main attraction. Accompanied with live music

and countless wines from the hotel’s legendary cellar, it’s complete FrancoCaribbean indulgence. Also included in the price tag are the many watersports available to guests. Water-skiing, paddle boarding, snorkelling, deep sea fishing and sailing are all on offer throughout the day, ensuring you stay entertained through the holiday. We jumped on a speedboat that took us out to the coral reef about a mile offshore from where we could do some snorkelling, spotting reef sharks, turtles and countless fish that made up an underwater rainbow. We even got a glimpse of a dolphin along the way. Back on dry land, the hotel has a longstanding reputation for tennis and hosts the annual Antigua Tennis Week on its four courts overlooking the ocean. An islandwide professional tournament, it showcases six days of action-packed match play, as well as stroke-and-strategy clinics for

guests and glitzy socialising in the evening. Look out for the other tennis camps run by various British stars, including Andrew Castle and Annabel Croft, which also take place throughout the year. But your holiday here doesn’t have to be high-octane – there’s also an exceptional spa on hand to help you relax. With its cool, clean Balinese décor, Curtain Bluff ’s stunning wellness sanctuary is the perfect place to unwind after stepping off the long flight from London. Try the Ultimate Destresser massage, offering deep relaxation and increased circulation in a treatment room filled with the soothing sounds of the waves lapping against the shoreline below. Afterwards, we lazed in the cliff-top infinity Jacuzzi pool with a rum punch in hand, watching the sun set over the sparkling sea – the ultimate way to enjoy the Caribbean. u

ew to the Featherdown fold is Gambledown, a working family cattle farm that’s now home to five fabulous luxury canvas lodges, each equipped with a flushing loo, a wood-burning stove, running (cold) water and supercomfortable beds with warm duvets. WHAT TO EAT

F

arming couple Richard and Tamara are excellent hosts, thinking of everything. We arrive quite late on Friday – too late for any dinner that involves waiting for a stove to warm up – but Tamara has baked potatoes in her aga for us. On Saturday evening she and Richard fire up the outdoor pizza oven and lead the children in a pizza-making session using ingredients from their well-stocked ‘honesty shop’ (take what you like, note it down and pay when you leave). We can cook a mean full English on our stove and there’s a barbecue outside each tent too. u

he children quickly find the excellent rope swing that dangles cleverly over a large pit. Our informative and fun farm tour, pitched perfectly to suit all the weekend’s resident children (aged between two and 14) ended up with petting of the family’s own pets including a ferret and some guinea pigs. There’s much talk among the campers of a noise in the night (unheard by us) that was revealed to be (tragically, but this is nature after all) a barn owl meeting its death by flying into a wall. Tamara shows the owl to the children and despite being dead it’s an intact, fluffy baby creature that’s so beautiful and perfect-looking that all children are entranced and leave with a few souvenir feathers each. For city kids, this is an education. In the evening, look up at the stars before retiring to your comfortable bed and once you’re there, relish in the complete and total silence. u

Most satisfying transaction I’ve had… I was once asked to market a derelict house owned by a frail elderly couple. I worked hard to sell their property and achieved well over asking price. Indeed, it is widely accepted that this is the case and even some limited research online will prove this. It is curious then that landlords should continue to pay for such facilities given the impact of these costs against their return. In the cases I examined the service charge alone represented between 10-15% of the annual rental yield, which at 3% in some areas is not particularly generous in the first place. With more new build stock coming online over the next few years, many with increasingly lavish facilities, how long will it be before both the professional landlord and speculative investor start to question why they should continue to pay for the provision of luxury services when the services themselves do not provide the luxury of increased rental income.

ountgrange Heritage is delighted to announce the appointment of Kaan Koseoglu, who has taken up the role of Associate Sales Director at their burgeoning North Kensington office. Kaan joins Mountgrange Heritage with over 15 years’ experience in the industry, most recently handling house sales for Goldschmidt and Howland in nearby Little

Having cut my teeth at big corporate firms, I have been exposed to every aspect of the industry, from the good to the bad! When I first met with Mountgrange it was clear that we shared a common goal to deliver the very best experience to everyone we deal with. I live in the area and am very excited to be running such a great office with an outstanding team around me.” Michael Wilson, Director of Sales at Mountgrange Heritage comments, “Since opening the W10 office a little over two years ago, our presence in North Kensington, Queens Park, Kensal Green and Brondesbury has gone from strength to strength. I have no doubt that Kaan's extensive experience, energy and professionalism will make him an integral part of our exciting success story.”

hose who bought in 2007 probably had their regrets in 2008 after the subprime lending crisis, but a year or two on they must look back and regard it as a masterstroke after prices recovered so strongly. With prices cooling towards the end of 2014 and into 2015, we are likely to see this as another minor correction followed by prices normalising thereafter. Historically, London has seen consistent price rises with the occasional minor correction. If one is taking a long term view, then the right time to buy is now. SUGGESTS

If you’re thinking of selling your home in 2015, make sure to choose an agent that advertises with us. One of the most important questions to ask any agent before appointing them is where they will market your property. With over a million visitors a day to our websites, generating an enquiry every second for sellers across the UK, most agents understand that getting maximum exposure for your property results in the best price being achieved.

ome say that the guidance you receive when you’re young serves to set the boundaries for your behaviour in later life, but has it ever been said that the jobs you do when you’re young have the same impact? I’m quite sure that some of us have carried out some tedious tasks for ‘pocket money’ during teenage years and this has had a definitive impact on our decisions later in life. Well, falling out of law school was a blessing. Arriving back in a small hometown with your tail between your legs can be a great ‘equaliser’. It was this experience that got me a six-month job at a local, privately run estate agency. Two things happened there – I saw the value in property and learnt the importance of accurate advice. My infamous first valuation happened to be a vacant detached property that had recently been re-possessed. A formal written report was, I thought, right up my street. Little did I know that I would be driven to the property by my MD, who pulled over on the return trip several miles from the office and asked what I thought the value of the property was. “£75-80,000…” I replied vaguely. His response: “Right, out of the car and walk back. You can think about your values on the way.” Lesson 1: Get it right. Early 1990s and the market was in a state of flux. Having endured a huge ‘downturn’, which had peaked in 1991, the property business slowly started to find its feet again. Estate agencies that had been sold for huge sums of money were being bought back by the previous owners for a fraction of the cost. And then, of course, the deals started to roll back in… Lesson 2: Be your own boss. So you get the picture, the theology graduate (B.D. Honours – is that Building Development?) used his powers of reasoning to persuade people to buy houses – and in the good times, it really was that simple.

ITOW.indd 104

Nowadays however, agents are increasingly reliant on web portals and international marketing as sales tools, and I have to ask myself: ‘Where’s the skill in that?’ It was this new and, to be frank, unwelcome lack of talent that steered me to look at a new direction. When I combined this with the selective hearing of my audience, who, as I offered advice, kept one eye on the latest House Price Index, I decided it was time to go into the business-to-business sector of the industry. Lesson 3: Be objective. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Sorry, simply not true. More and more my daily routine involved advising house builders and investors on their portfolios and this enormous sense of responsibility finally allowed me to discover my niche in the market. Suddenly you feel calm, excited and, dare I say it - grateful. You discover an industry full of personalities with the power, portfolios and passion to influence the modern landscape of this great city. Providing advisory work, examining yields, and trying to spot trends in the market, emerging postcodes and districts that are under-valued has become a key part of my daily routine. And the market actually becomes easier to understand as you start to put all these variables together. Lesson 4: Become an expert. Ask yourself, what part of the journey provided the best education for you? For me it was that walk from the MD’s car 22 years ago. It’s the moment that makes you think and puts you out there. It’s only then that you can let people know what is really happening in the market. So, as the old saying goes, play the long game, know your stuff and look after people. To me, these are the backbones of a great business that will never be undone by fads and an unqualified approach.

London’s

MOST POPULAR The floating trend: Back of the Moon,Taggs Island, TW12

F

loating homes are evidently popular among Londoners. Some 18,271 people have so far had a peek at this water borne property since it was listed in July last year – and it’s also this month’s most popular property on Zoopla.co.uk. Back of the Moon, which is for sale at £1.8m, is a recently completed 3,000 sq ft contemporary houseboat on Taggs Island, a slip of land on the Thames upstream from Hampton Court and reached via a humpback bridge. Like most of the 60 houseboats on the island, Back of the Moon is moored to piles driven into the bank but unlike most, it comes with a large 125ft mooring and a landscaped half-acre garden behind it, making it one of the largest plots on Taggs Island. Back of the Moon has been completed externally but it now needs finishing inside and could be an “artist’s home, workshop and gallery or a five bedroom home”, says agent Mary Hodgson of Waterside Residential. She says the property includes street parking for five cars, two driveways, a garage/ workshop, summerhouse, outbuildings and its own slipway. But the person who buys Back of the Moon will be getting more than just a floating home. Taggs Island has plenty more to offer including

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

MOST POPULAR.DPS.indd 2

an interesting history, a very famous boat owner and a strong community feel. The island takes its name from Thomas Tagg who ran a boatyard on it during the 1870s and subsequently opened a hotel too. Then in 1902 Fred Karno, the theatrical impresario credited with nurturing the talents of Charlie Chaplin, bought the hotel along with the rest of the island. But Taggs Island slowly slipped back into obscurity until the early 1970s when it was used by film director Stanley Kubrick to shoot scenes for his 1971 film A Clockwork Orange. But development of the island only began in earnest when, in 1983, it was bought by a group of houseboat owners and proper sewage, water services and moorings were introduced. The decent services and idyllic position make the island popular with artists and musicians wanting to ‘get away

from it all’ but be near London and that includes David Gilmour, guitarist and song writer with the band Pink Floyd. He owns the Edwardian houseboat built by Fred Karno and it is now Gilmour’s home studio. It is here that Pink Floyd’s most recent two albums The Division Bell and Endless River were recorded. But with such an extraordinary island come unusual aspects of life. The first is that mortgages for its houseboats are tricky to secure so most buyers make cash offers and, while the homes are freehold, the mooring and land are leasehold. Also, there are annual fees to be paid both to the Environment Agency for the mooring and to the island’s freeholders for its upkeep – but one of the island’s chores is also a pleasure. Some residents do their shopping by boat and chug up to Kingston to pop into Waitrose.

s North Kensington goes from strength to strength the area remains a solid place for investors to grow their buy-to-let property portfolio. With recent new-build developments and an increasing number of new eateries, the area is ever growing with more tenants wanting refurbished, well-proportioned properties. One and two bedroom properties are always in high demand, which make them great options when considering a buy-to-let investment, especially as they achieve higher yield. As opposed to thinking about whether or not you would like to live in the investment property, think about whom you are appealing to tenant-wise, who is your target tenant? If they are young professionals it should be modern and stylish but not overbearing. If it is a family, they may have plenty of their own furniture and need a blank canvas. Remember that allowing tenants to make their mark on a property, such as painting, or adding pictures or taking out unwanted furniture makes it feel more like home – these tenants will feel more attached and stay for longer, which is great news for you, their landlord.

here is little doubt that the coming election is front of mind for people looking to put their money into property, but it has certainly not brought the market to a standstill. The first 6 weeks of the year have seen a solid level of activity on both sales and lettings and the number of valuations we are being asked to carry out is definitely up on this time last year. It will come as no surprise that the market over the £2m mark is in more of a state of suspended animation as it is this level of investment that will be most affected by a change in government. However, our clients fundamentally have faith in the future of the property market and whatever happens in May we are confident that the London market will show growth this year.

EDWARDIAN Elegance

Wo r d s N I G E L L E W I S An Edwardian apartment block in Marylebone within which a penthouse apartment is currently for sale at £2.85 million with agent Kay & Co., 020 7486 6338

The inimitable Edwardians

T

he Edwardian period was a brief but many-layered flash of late Victorian design brilliance. It ran for 30 years (compared to Georgian’s three-century stretch) beginning 12 years before Queen Victoria died, getting its name from the nine-year reign of Edward IV and then ending in 1914 when the First World War changed everything. “It’s not a period that makes a huge amount of sense in architectural terms because there wasn’t a big break either at the beginning of Edward’s reign in 1901 or in 1910 when he died,” says Christopher

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

STYLE BIBLE.indd 101

Costelloe, director of the Victorian Society. During the Edwardian period, changes were afoot for London’s home owners. Servants had become more expensive and less common, commuting became more popular as the city grew, the Gothic style was falling out of fashion and the Queen Anne style was becoming more popular. All these features make Edwardian homes increasingly popular today as London’s high house prices persuade many people to look further afield for homes that are wider, broader and have larger gardens than their Victorian counterparts. But there’s another reason why Edwardian homes appeal. They hark back to a simpler, pre-industrial era and mix modernity with the rustic, the most common expression of which is gables with

mock Tudor black-on-white framing. Other period markers include Dutch and Flemish influences, prominent chimneys, intricate detailing, white painted windows and the breakdown of the terrace and the growth of more “articulated buildings opposed to the more pared down terraces of the 1850s and 1860s”, says Costelloe. In central London the most obvious Edwardian homes are purpose-built apartment blocks, a type of property that Martin Bikhit of estate agent Kay & Co often sells. “Edwardian properties are defined by their high ceilings and well-proportioned rooms and the typical purpose built flats that we see are grand in appearance and are loved by families who are drawn to their proportions and internal space”. One property that would appeal to any buyer, and that was last sold twelve years ago for £1.2 million, is The Tower House on South Parade in Bedford Park. It was designed by leading Edwardian architect and Arts and Crafts designer Charles Voysey and is an unusual, white rendered property in an area of largely brick Victorian houses that “somehow it fits in very well”, says Costelloe. From this high point of architectural innovation to the thousands of standard Edwardian homes that pepper London and reflect these more radical homes, the style remains remarkably popular and widespread given its short existence. victoriansociety.org.uk
