T
he beloved Lewis Carroll tale has undergone a chilly transformation in Alice in Winterland. In this new take on the classic story, adapted by Ciaran McConville, the journey begins in the midst of the First World War. Not only is Alice’s family dynamic changing, but so is the world around her. As she escapes to a magical realm, Alice now faces a different challenge. The young girl must save Winterland from the threat of an eternal winter. She unites the land’s curious inhabitants in her mission, including the colourful Mad Hatter and the familiar grin of the Cheshire Cat. A cast of established actors are joined by the young stars of tomorrow from the Rose Youth Theatre. Bringing to life the wonder and awe of Winterland is a talented cast of over thirty, and includes the marvelous Daniel Goode.
18
“Twists, turns and complex characters result in a magical theatre experience” The actor is no stranger to the Rose Theatre. After performing in A Christmas Carol and The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, Goode has returned for another successful run, this time as a famously unhinged hatter. Goode’s presence on stage is marked by not one, but two prominent figures in Alice’s life. His roles include the Mad Hatter as well
as the young girl’s father. He explains that the two characters are tied together by a very clear thread. “In our version, Alice’s dad goes to the front in World War I and comes back very scarred by the experience, leading in part to the disintegration of her family.” He continues, “The Hatter is also very scarred in his own way, scarred by madness, anxiety and an obsession with time.” Goode emphasises that these connections between the characters are an intriguing exploration into the storyline for himself as an actor as well as for the audience. The plot provides twists, turns and complex characters that are sure to lead to a magical theatre experience. However, none of it would be possible without the help of an incredible production and cast. Goode emphasizes how crucial the design of a show is for the creativity of the team. “I know how much energy they put into making shows at the Rose as atmospheric as possible.” He praises the show which employs film, puppetry and spectacularly choreographed fights as well as dance routines.

Boasting a strong musicality, the production left Goode delighted with the music and lyrics made available to the cast. “Our composer, Eamonn O’Dwyer, has pitched the songs perfectly, from the disintegrating world at the start through the magical characters in Winterland to the finale.” The massive cast unties to fill the theatre with a vibrant performance. “With five professionals and thirty-two youth theatre members, the strength of the sound is fabulous,” he proudly shares. Though the voices of many envelop the audience in beautiful song, Goode admits it is not always easy to work with such a sizeable cast. “The main challenge for the professional actors is working with two separate casts of youth theatre actors and four Alices!”
He says this arrangement created an obstacle in the rehearsal process. “Normally we each get a specific role and then we rehearse together to make our individual characters work. In this instance, we professional actors must accommodate many different interpretations from our different casts, and many leading ladies,” the actor says. The joyful challenge, as Goode refers to it, is met with enthusiasm from the adult cast members. “Most professional actors start their careers in youth theatres so it’s lovely for us to join forces with the next generation of performers,” he says. “The youth theatre members bring such verve to productions, it’s lovely.” The actor not only gives acclaim to the talent behind the production, but he also shares his zest for the Rose Theatre. “The stage is wide and tall and it has no proscenium arch so productions that use all of the space – as the Christmas shows invariably do – look epic!” As for this Christmas show, it is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the season with the ones you love. “Christmas is traditionally a time when families share a visit to the theatre, but it is also a time associated with fun, togetherness and optimism,” Goode says. “The magical quality
of the Christmas period lends itself very naturally to plays that share a message about goodness and love and family winning in the face of adversity. Alice in Winterland ticks all the boxes in this regard.” The Rose Theatre’s Alice in Winterland is a joyous journey telling the story of a girl who is lost in the challenges her life presents but, there is hope to be found. “I hope our audiences take away the message in this production which is the importance of being true to yourself.” Goode adds, “I also hope they laugh a lot, enjoy the music and the spectacle and cry – just a little!” Fall down the rabbit hole with Goode, the Rose Youth Theatre and the entire talented cast this winter season. Enjoy a curious journey with Alice filled with song, dance and a bit of snow.

Ten Years of TRIES Celebrate a thrilling decade of rugby at Twickenham Stadium
T
his winter, Harlequins will celebrate an exhilarating decade of Big Games at the home of rugby; Twickenham Stadium. Since its beginnings in 2008, the Big Game series has rapidly risen in popularity and is now a firm fixture in the festive sporting calendar. In December, Harlequins will face off with Northampton Saints and there is something of a score to settle between the two teams. Back in 2014, Harlequins suffered a defeat to Saints in Big Game 7. In the first of the Big Game series 50,000 supporters descended on Twickenham Stadium to watch Harlequins and Leicester Tigers play out a 26-26 draw, thanks in no small part to the last-minute try of Ugo Monye and subsequent conversion of Nick Evans. Big Game 4 against Saracens famously set a global
rugby union attendance record for a regular season club fixture when Twickenham Stadium was at a full 82,000 capacity. Over the nine matches played so far, attendances have averaged out at 75,000 as rugby goers get their Christmas fix. As Big Game comes to its tenth birthday, Harlequins and England scrum-half Danny Care - one of only two players to play in them all - can’t wait to run out at Twickenham Stadium. “Big Games are huge moments for the players, the club and the fans. Every Christmas it’s the one special game you look forward to and it’s an awesome opportunity for us to go and play at Twickenham with your club side," he says. “The Club always puts on a massive spectacle and we can’t wait to get to Big Game 10. The first one seems like a long time ago but we’re really excited about this one. The fans love it and it’s a great opportunity for families around Christmas to come and watch a great sporting event.”
Every Christmas it’s the one special game you look forward to
CULTURE • LOCAL
Big Game, however, is not just about the rugby - there is something for everyone, whether you’re a rugby lover or not. In the week between Christmas and New Year, Big Game has prided itself on being a day out for all the family. The rugby and entertainment worlds collide with spectacular musical performances, jaw-dropping pyrotechnics and entertainment for all the family. Last year’s chapter – Big Game 9 – took home the Best Sports Event Award at the 2017 Sports Business Awards, seeing off competition from British Cycling, EA Sports and the Professional Darts Corporation. Over the years, acts including EXTREME Sports, Olly Murs and Rudimental have performed at Big Game, where television personalities Mark Wright and Vernon Kay have MC’d the event. Big Game 10 is the perfect opportunity to round off Christmas by bringing together your family, friends or colleagues for a full day of entertainment both inside and out of the stadium. As kick-off approaches, make your way into the stadium for the famous ball delivery. Last year the ball was parachuted in by base jumper Gary Connery, who was the body double for the Queen at the 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony in London. This year, Harlequins have gone bigger and better. All that’s left to do is sit back with 80,000 other supporters and watch the nail biting match unfold.
HARLEQUINS Tickets start from just £24 for adults and £14 for children and can be purchased by calling the Harlequins Ticket Office on 020 8410 6010 or on their website at quins.co.uk.

Who needs The Nutcracker this Christmas when you’ve got Burberry’s military jacket? Part of the brand’s exclusive capsule collection for Net-aPorter, the stand-to-attention collar and gilded frogging will give Clara’s handsome prince a run for his money; £2,995. net-a-porter.com

WHO?
GREY LADY KITRI
SAY MY NAME SOPHIE HULME
What do you give the girl who has everything? A personalised designer bag, of course. Head to Burlington Arcade this December for Sophie Hulme’s new personalisation service, which allows you to embellish your bag with everything from leather letters to gold embossing. sophiehulme.com
Born from the frustration of not being able to find well-made designs at purse-friendly prices, KITRI is the label making the high street a little more exclusive. Each design is produced in limited quantities, making outfit clashing a thing of the past; £125.
Khaite is the new fashion label created by womenswear designer Catherine Holstein. The brand, which means ‘long flowing hair’ in Greek, only launched in 2016, yet within 18 months has attracted over 50 influential global stockists, including Matchesfashion and Net-a-Porter.
WHAT? After noticing a gap in the market for strong, feminine design, Holstein set about creating a brand that offered ‘buy now - love forever’ pieces. Eschewing fashion’s love of fleeting trends, Khaite’s polished staples balance functionality with luxury. The result? Sharp ’90s-inspired suiting, slouchy, butter-soft cashmere and fluid slip dresses.

Well heeled JIMMY CHOO
The festive season is the perfect opportunity to wear those inadvisable shoe purchases that have sat unworn in your wardrobe for months. You know the ones we’re talking about. Jimmy Choo’s South Pumps might get stuck in air vents and look like drowned creatures when wet (we're looking at you pompoms). But do we care? Nope, not even a little bit; £750.
brownsfashion.com
WHERE? Based in New York, Khaite has garnered international acclaim amongst the fashion community - Caroline de Maigret and Lily Aldridge are known fans. The brand’s jeans have been a particular hit, however we’ve been won over by Khaite's surprisingly chic collection of bodysuits, which will prove an invaluable layering tool this winter.

Q&A
WRAPPED UP IN STYLE Madeleine Thompson’s distinctive knitwear designs have garnered critical acclaim within London’s style set. We met the brand’s founder to discuss inspiration, London life and the universal appeal of a good jumper Wo r d s J OY M O N T G O M E R Y
JOY MONTGOMERY: How did Madeleine Thompson come into being? MADELEINE THOMPSON: It started when I realised that knitwear was either very good quality but quite ‘mumsie’ or a good cut but terrible yarn. There didn’t seem to be any middle ground. I feel very strongly that my jumpers should provide amazing quality alongside great directional shapes something which is still quite rare. JM: Who is the Madeleine Thompson
woman? MT: I think she’s all of us. I think she’s anyone who wants to look good while still feeling comfortable. My designs are your friend - who doesn’t want that? The Madeleine Thompson woman is stylish but doesn’t try too hard. JM: Where do you draw your inspiration from and what inspired your AW17 collection? MT: I have to say, this collection is inspired by many different things. Everything from retro après skiwear and surf style to boarders from the ’70s. It's an eclectic mix. JM: Why do you think the luxury loungewear market has grown in recent years? MT: I think there are a few reasons: firstly, there are just some amazing pieces out there now. Loungewear in its latest reincarnation is comfortable, well cut and chic. I also think our lives have changed and the way people work and live mean it’s appropriate to wear loungewear in our day-to-day lives.
32
JM: What’s your favourite piece from the new collection? MT: Definitely the rainbow tracksuit. It’s awesome - if I do say so myself. JM: What is your career highlight? MT: Getting stocked in Net-a-Porter was
such an honour and a watershed moment for the brand. JM: Who would you love to see wearing your designs? MT: It would have to be Gwyneth Paltrow or Lorde. JM: What’s your favourite thing about working as a designer in London? MT: London is the most fantastic city. We’ve got it all - old and new, conservative and innovative. I am constantly inspired just walking down the street. JM: Where’s your favourite place to eat, drink and shop in London? Any hidden gems? MT: I’ve recently discovered Cafe Murano. I had the best pasta I’ve ever had in my life there. Delicious. JM: Where do you hope to see the brand in five years? MT: I would love the brand to grow organically and with purpose. I like that we are an authentic label and I hope to continue in this vein.

Christmas is the only time of year when you can justifiably go crazy for all things gold and glittery without looking like a five-year-old. Luckily for us, MAC’s holiday collection is a veritable celebration of all things bling. From lipstick sets to mascara kits, there's plenty of festive beauty to keep your makeup bag happy.
maccosmetics.co.uk
WHAT DOES IT DO?
l The technology in the Xero system reduces fat cells, burns off fat and tightens the skin, before measuring the results using intelligent body analysis. What’s more, it does all this in just 40 minutes. This, plus zero down-time, means that a lunchtime treatment is easily doable. The treatment involves a combination of laser lipolysis, neuromuscular stimulation (NMS) and radio frequency (RF) focused on the targeted area, along with a lifestyle support package to promote sustainable results. Xero provides nutritional advice and supplements to ensure your body is in optimal fat burning mode.
WHO IS IT FOR?
l Xero can be used on both men and women and can treat all areas of the body, except the female breast. As with any treatment, people with certain medical conditions should not use Xero. If you have any existing medical condition you should consult with your doctor before commencing the treatment. £125 for a single treatment of £760 for a course of eight. SWITCH OFF FOR SLEEP
Sweet Dreams A healthy lifestyle is nothing without a solid sleep routine. Here’s how to get it right
of ge
Wo r d s D R G U Y M E A D O W S Illustration PHIL COUZENS
T
he craziness of everyday life can make it hard to prioritise your beauty rest. Thankfully, Dr. Guy Meadows has created a list of ways to guarantee a good night's kip.
MAKE THE UNFAMILIAR, FAMILIAR
K
nown as the ‘first night effect’, recent research has shown us that the brain goes into so-called ‘surveillance mode’ when we sleep somewhere new, with some parts sleeping and others remaining alert and on the lookout for danger. Taking a few personal items with you when you are away from home, such as bedside photos or a book, can help to reduce the surveillance mode and actually help us to sleep better.
SILENT, DARK AND COOL
T
hese are three easy-tofollow guidelines to create the perfect haven for good quality sleep:
SILENT. Our brains never stop listening, even during sleep, so using a pair of ear plugs can ensure that any unwanted noises won’t disturb your slumber. DARK. Making your room as dark as possible by drawing the curtains or using an eye mask informs your internal body clock that it’s time for sleep, releasing the sleepy hormone melatonin. COOL. Setting your room temperature to a cool 16 - 17C will encourage the 1C drop in core body temperature that we need to help us fall asleep.
“When your mind wanders off onto thoughts, let them go by returning to your breath”
C
hecking work emails or catching up on the news before bed may seem like a good use of time, but it could be disturbing your sleep. Clinical research shows that using stimulating ‘blue light’ emitting devices, like smart-phones or tablets, even up to two hours before our usual bedtime, keeps our brains stimulated which delays sleep onset and reduces sleep quality. While most of us are unlikely to switch off two hours before bed, installing a blue-light filter on your device or creating a habit of switching off devices at least 40 minutes before bed can help.
CALM YOUR MIND
G
oing to bed with a busy mind can make it harder to fall off to sleep, increase night time waking and leave you feeling unrefreshed the next day. Calm your mind by choosing to gently focus your attention onto your breath for a few minutes at a time. When your mind wanders off onto thoughts, let them go by returning to your breath. Scientific research suggests that, if practiced regularly, mindfulness can promote structural changes in the modern rational part of your brain, leading to deeper and more refreshing sleep, which is essential if you’re a frequent traveller. NAPPING POWER
N
apping is an effective natural performance enhancer, proven to help boost energy levels, memory processing and even creative problem-solving. Taking a regular nap for no more than 20 minutes - ideally between midday and 3pm - while travelling can be a helpful way of staying sharp and overcoming fatigue. Avoid napping any more than 20 minutes as you’ll run the risk of you slipping into deeper sleep and causing you to wake up feeling groggy. Napping later than 3pm will weaken your night-time sleep drive.

oche Bobois, the purveyor of French ‘Art de Vivre’, has teamed up with JapaneseFrench fashion designer, Kenzo Takada, to reimagine its iconic Mah Jong sofa. Featuring bold colourful Kimonoinspired patterns, the new range demonstrates the diversity, creativity and strong sense of collaboration that lies at the heart of Roche Bobois. The Mah Jong modular sofa was designed in 1971 by Hans Hopfer and has quickly become a signature design of Roche Bobois’ collections. A sofa based on the complete freedom of form and function, the Mah Jong is made up of modular elements that can be combined, aligned or stacked,

allowing for infinite options of composition and experimentation. Kenzo Takada is the latest fashion designer to create a range of fabrics for the Mah Jong, using his wealth of artistic and creative expertise, from designing fashion garments, creating fragrances and exhibiting a range of his painting worldwide since retiring from the management of his eponymous fashion house in 1999. This new version of the Mah Jong embraces Japanese influence with fabrics inspired by patterns found on kimonos, specifically those woven as costumes for traditional Noh theatre. Due to Kenzo Takada’s natural design curiosity and experimentation, during his creative process he naturally found himself crafting a complementary series of cushions and vases. These home accessories draw on the key patterns and colour

TASTING NOTES
London’s food news and delicious things to see you through December By HANNAH HOPKINS
By BERRY BROS. & RUDD
Kyperounda, Commandaria, Pitsilia Mountains, Cyprus £21.50 Commandaria is an ancient wine, documented as far back as 800BC. The wine is unctuous, with an array of flavours including liquorice, caramel and orange. This is a wine for sipping while nibbling nuts or to accompany puddings.
2015 Berry Bros. & Rudd New Zealand Pinot Noir by Greystone Wines £17.95 A generous pinot noir, full of rich, ripe red fruits (raspberry, cranberry, cherry), but counterbalanced by an herbaceous freshness. A juicy accompaniment to roast beef and a good partner for turkey.
2016 Berry Bros. & Rudd White Burgundy by Collovray & Terrier £12.50 A classic Chardonnay with delicate floral aromas, flavours of vibrant citrus and peach fruit and a finishing smoky note. This wine's fresh, crisp profile makes it an excellent accompaniment to lighter meat dishes like roast turkey or chicken.
BERRY BROS. & RUDD Berry Bros. & Rudd is Britain's oldest wine and spirit merchant, having traded from the same shop since 1698. Today the company also has offices in Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, a Wine School and an exclusive fine wine and dining venue in St James's.

A taste of India
Authentic Indian cuisine can be found in Raynes Park at Sai Restaurant

ndian food is a favourite of Londoners. Little do they know, they are missing out on authentic cuisine. In the heart of south west London, Vinod Trivedi is treating people’s palates to the true taste of India. Sai creates authentic Punjabi cuisine and the core values of the restaurant are found in head chef Trivedi’s heritage. “Where I am from in India, the food is very flavoursome, the spices are prominent,” he says. “My Punjabi background enhances this. We believe strongly in ‘eat, drink and be merry.'” He says his skills in the kitchen derive from his family. “I’ve never been to culinary school, I
learned plenty of cooking from my mum when I was younger.” Though his passion for food has always been prevalent in his life, he says it was not his initial career move. “I qualified as a pharmacist. I was practicing medicine and working in hospitals. But I’ve always wanted people to try my cooking.” Trivedi says he would often go out looking for new restaurants. “I love to explore food and wines.” The chef soon decided that this was his true calling. “I told myself I should showcase food with my Indian background. I needed to create my own restaurant to show what Indian food really tastes like.” At the start of his restaurant venture, Trivedi was working as both a pharmacist and chef. His pharmacy neighboured the restaurant, so he would tend to patients on one side and create Indian food on the other. When the initial head chef at Sai stepped down, Trivedi took his ultimate place in the kitchen. “It was a bit of a struggle initially, but I was passionate about it. I changed the menus and started cooking my way, in a traditionally Punjabi style.” Thus the unique legacy Sai carries was born. “The dishes I create you won’t find anywhere else,” he says. The capital boasts ethnic diversity, but the chef says the dining options are not as numerous as people might think. “In London we don’t have a lot of Indian restaurants. They are Pakistani or Sri Lankan, but not typically Indian restaurants. We have maybe 15 or 20 true Indian restaurants in the entire city.” Some people are caught off guard by the flavours and will tell him his food isn’t what they are used to. Trivedi says he simply asks them, “Where have you been eating?” He says the dishes Londoners assume are Indian are tailored specifically to the English rather than relying on the Indian influence.

“I haven’t anglicised my food at all. It is not a curry house,” he says. The chef stresses the importance of their preparation methods. “We cook everything fresh to order. People have to come and wait for their dish. It won’t be prepared in five minutes. Once the food comes, then they will understand.” Not only will you be surprised by the incredible food, but the actual design of Sai is also not what you would expect from an Indian restaurant. Upon entering, you probably wouldn’t be able to make an initial assumption on what type of food the establishment serves based simply on decor. Trivedi says this is not on accident. “The interior is majorly designed by myself,” he says. He wanted to take a step back from the overly Indian influenced interior designs of other restaurants so as to not take away from the actual food. “I wanted to give it a fresh look and a bit off-beat. It is a western look with Indian soul.” Though he has plenty of regular customers, new visitors are welcomed for a delicious dining experience. If seeking recommendations, a board containing the chef’s specials is updated daily and features new recipes as well as old favourites. Trivedi says he also tailors a dish to each person’s specifications. He takes into consideration meat choice as well as level of spice to ensure that each meal is a pleasurable dining experience. This intimate setting accompanied with expertise cooking creates an Indian delicacy haven. Trivedi sets out to share not only the tradition of Punjabi cuisine, but also his philosophy for enjoying life through food. S A I R E S TAU R A N T 193 Worple Road, SW20 sairestaurant.co.uk

An Evening at Stein’s Bringing the heartiness of German and Bavarian cuisine to Kingston High Street

tein’s restaurant and bar offers tasty specialised menus, serving special seasonal dishes alongside their usual selection. The chosen starter was the mini fondue with a variety of items to dip with. The cheese is melted to a perfect consistency and temperature, not too hot so that it is messy to handle and ready to be eaten straight away. For dipping, they provide bread, grapes, and pickles. The bread is slightly
chewy, perfect for dipping in the fondue, and highlights the flavour of the cheese. The pickle’s strong taste and slight crunch cuts through the cheese, providing a bold combination of flavours, while the grapes add bursts of sweetness melds well with the cheese, creating a cool and refreshing pair. The main course, chosen from the seasonal menu, is cured pork with sauerkraut and German gnocchi. The dish is presented elegantly while maintaining the rustic and homely feel of the constituent parts
FOOD Hearty Bavarian and German dishes with a twist, paired with traditional beers

of the dish. The cured pork falls apart easily and retains a firm, moist texture. The savoury flavour of the pork is complemented by the sauerkraut’s sour flavour and crunchy texture, which is not so strong as to be overpowering. Mixed in with the finely chopped cabbage are several German gnocchi, soaking up the juices from both the pork and sauerkraut, infusing each individual one with ample amounts of flavour. As a garnish, small pieces of crispy bacon are sprinkled all over the dish, adding crunch and even more flavour. To end the meal, the dessert is pancakes in cherry sauce with whipped cream, grapes and raspberries. The pancakes are thin European style, each rolled up into compact pieces with a mild sweetness. The cherry sauce has a strong flavour, complemented by pieces of cherry, giving it a sour edge. To prevent the sauce from overpowering the dish with its tartness, pieces of grapes and whipped cream provide refreshing sweetness and light creaminess that lift the relatively heavy dessert, creating a refreshing end to the meal. There is also a spectacular assortment of German and Bavarian beers available at Stein's. Enjoy your drink from the special stein size as well as one or two litre boot shaped glasses. The authentic Bavarian atmosphere coupled with fine and hearty food makes the Kingston restaurant a great dining option for any occasion.
VERDICT The authentic atmosphere and menu create an optimal dining destination

SKI IN STYLE Gstaad has all the glitz and glamour of its French twin, Cannes, and as such, is known as the playground for the rich and famous. With its timber-lined village at the heart and buttersoft ski slopes, it’s the ultimate Alpine escape.

ould anything be more romantic than snow topped mountains, wooden chalets and roaring open fires? To me, there’s not. Come winter, while some may crave sunshine, I want to see snow, and lots of it. Skiing however, is not really my thing and that’s why Gstaad is so perfect. You see, this is the ski village where there is no pressure to ski at all. People-watching and shopping are fulltime activities here. While my friends hit the slopes, I can wrap myself up in layers of fur, drink Glühwein and eat fondue until I’m sick. Thankfully, this set-up works for everyone - the pistes are left delightfully quiet for my friends. Admittedly, the journey from London to Gstaad sounds like a faff. It requires at least one plane and one train – but when done with the self-proclaimed “skier’s airline,” SWISS, it is relatively painless, with enough baggage allowance for your skiing paraphernalia. Meanwhile, the ornate Goldenpass train winds its way around the mountains for two hours so the journey is more than enjoyable. Before long you’re in the village known to be a playground for the super-rich and famous, and those with refined but extravagant tastes - think Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and Valentino.

As one of only four five-star centuryold hotels, Le Grand Bellevue is the place to stay if you want to experience the luxurious side of Switzerland. Set in private parkland at the start of Promenade Gstaad, the mansion first opened its doors in 1912. It has recently undergone a full renovation. Now it boasts a Michelinstarred restaurant, private cinema, nightclub and the village’s largest spa. The latter is an incredible 3,000sqm with seven hot and cold rooms. They include a herb infused steam bath, Himalayan salt room and outdoor Finnish sauna. Behind the renovation of this epic hotel are Daniel and Davia Koetser, who met

and later honeymooned here. A long-term Gstaad resident, Daniel has created a low-key but very high-end hotel. It features eccentric prints from East London’s House of Hackney and human-sized birdcages swinging from the ceilings. A giant plaid camel stands proudly in the lobby. The eclectic range of restaurants at the hotel sums up the vibe completely. Not only will you find exquisite, world-class fare at the Michelin-starred Leonard’s, but also a trendy sushi bar. There’s also a traditional Swiss fondue chalet. The latter is housed inside a charming, tree-flanked cottage on the hotel’s grounds. For those who want to head out, there
are 220km of runs to explore. With only 30% of the resort’s visitors actually skiing – you are pretty much guaranteed fresh snow. As the only glacier ski region in the Bernese Oberland, Gstaad’s season is particularly long. Snow can be found right through to the start of May. So if you’re preparing for the ski season, plan for an impeccable experience. A holiday in Gstaad is fun, extravagant and bold, but it’s also filled with Swiss culture and tradition. Le Grand Bellevue embodies all this and more. It’s both exciting and relaxing. Whether you decide to venture out onto the slopes or not, you are guaranteed a luxurious snow fix.

ou are planning your winter adventure to the glorious snow-capped mountains. Just as you are booking your flight, it hits you. As much as you would like to think they are, your snow sport abilities are not quite up to that of an Olympic gold medalist. It would be less than ideal to find yourself hopping off the lift in confidence only to embarrass yourself on the way down the hill. Alternatively, having to learn the basics upon arrival at the resort cuts into your precious time to enjoy the facilities with your family.
Fortunately, there is way to hit the slopes and practice your moves without having to leave London. Before you pack up on holiday, visit the lovely Skieasy. The new indoor slope offers the perfect setting for you and your family to learn and practice before the big trip. The facility offers a wide range of options for skiers of all ages and levels. One-on-one sessions are available as well as areas for parties and events. The fully refurbished space has a spectacular viewing gallery and cafe bar onsite. When compared to other learning environments, the smaller class sizes allow for students to excel in their abilities on the snow. A maximum of two pupils are on the slope at any

one time. Fully qualified instructors are on hand with instant instruction and feedback, ensuring that you immediately begin to build upon and strengthen your skills. This snow sports facility achieves the ski experience without the need for snow, queues or lifts. Snowboard and ski enthusiasts will be thrilled to experience the continuously rotating ski track. Whether you are just beginning your winter sport career or are a seasoned skiier, Skieasy helps improve your skills up to 10 times faster than on the snow. “To have the skills and muscle memories in place before your trip to the mountains means you can be ready to explore from the moment you arrive,” says Centre Manager Jamie Wolstenholme. This also helps eliminate any anxieites you or your little ones might have about the big adventure. Hop onto a snowboard and strap on your skiis. You'll be conquering the slopes like a trained professional once you get ski-fit this winter season. The snow is calling.

inda Plant is best known as the ‘Queen of Mean’ judge on the BBC1 show The Apprentice, always ready to rip contestants’ business plans to shreds. A long-term friend of Sir Alan Sugar, she too established herself in business from nothing, founding her clothing empire from the back of a market stall. Now, having retired from the

fashion industry, Linda runs an interior design company, Homerun, which specialises in doing up the homes of the wealthy. Her latest project is this sevenbedroom Art Deco house in Primrose Hill. She's given it a luxury makeover and added several features, including a his and hers treatment room, integrated music and video system in every room, gym, temperaturecontrolled wine cellar and an entrance hall with a glass chandelier. It’s for sale at £28.5 million with Aston Chase (0207 724 4724).
lex Garland is best known for his 1996 book The Beach and the film of the same name based on it, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Its depictions of a young backpacker’s hedonistic, drugfuelled experiences on a lonely beach in Thailand were at the time a revelation, but getting wasted on a Phuket beach have now become a standard part of many gap year itineraries. The film was directed by Danny Boyle and Garland has gone on to form a successful partnership with him, writing the screenplay for Boyle’s 2002 film 28 Days Later and 2007’s Sunshine. Garland is currently working on another science fiction film called Annihilation, due out next year and starring Natalie Portman. But before Hollywood beckoned, Garland resided in a former piano factory in Primrose Hill. He lived in the five-bedroom corner portion of the property, which is an open-plan home with a workspace and roof terrace. Primrose Hill is often regarded as a highly residential part of London, making it easy to forget that Regent's Park lies less than a ten minute walk away, London Zoo resides within that, and Camden market is an equidistant walk on its other side. Perhaps due to this, alongside the price-tag of £21,450 a month, the piano factory failed to find tenants with deep-enough pockets, and was taken off the market. It is now being offered by its current owners to prospective tenants via informal channels - in much the same way as Leonardo DiCaprio stumbled upon the beach.
