pring is definitely on its way and it's safe to say that we're all ready. At Absolutely, March is time to focus on Home – whether it's an entire makeover, a fresh coat of paint or just a bit of a spring clean. In this issue we're inspired by kitchen design and we delve into our drawers to find better ways of maintaining an organised pantry. Because it's no good having a beautifully designed kitchen if chaos reigns inside the cupboards. So we are launching a campaign to keep our larders in order – but we're also looking at more decorative things, like pretty coloured glasses, stylish new plates and fresh paint colours. We take design inspiration from Studio Duggan's creative approach and learn how the iconic Wishbone chair is made. And meanwhile, we celebrate Mother's Day and Easter with chocolate and other luxuries. Enjoy March.
Take inspiration from Studio Duggan's eclectic, characterful and contemporary style.

THE MOTIVE AND THE CUE
Sam Mendes’ ‘unmissably extraordinary’ (The Telegraph) production of The Motive and the Cue stars Johnny Flynn, Mark Gatiss and Tuppence Middleton in the iconic roles of Richard Burton, Sir John Gielgud and Elizabeth Taylor. Inspired by the making of Burton and Gielgud’s landmark 1964 Broadway production of Hamlet, the play offers a glimpse into the politics of a rehearsal room and the relationship between art and celebrity. he Other Art Fair returns to The Truman Brewery this month, with its artist-led platform that is inclusive, evocative, and challenges convention. In celebration of International Women's Day, the March edition boasts an impressive 69% femaleidentifying artist line-up. Highlights include an art fair debut from the East London Strippers Collective, who will present a curated hang and life drawing workshop, a thrilling rendition of a classic life drawing workshop complete with high-octane aerial poses and pole tricks, as stripping and erotic performance collide with the art world. The fair's line-up spans the vibrant portraiture of Joanna Pilarczyk, the vintage pastel tones of Nadia Attura’s stunning photography, the British Ghanaian abstract artist Courtenay Kusitor and the delicate handwritten art of Taya De La Cruz. The arresting portraiture of Lauren Mele explores the female as muse and contemporary oil painter Kit Lintin combines the everyday with the symbolic in her still-lifes. 7-10 March; theotherartfair.com

old from the unique perspective of a teddy bear, this emotive and wistful play examines how a relationship changes the older we become, and the fight for significance. As we grow and thus become more aware of the world around us and our place in it, the need for things we cherished as a child fade away, only to be replaced by things we consider far more important. But no matter what we do or how we treatthem, our childhood best friends are always there for us. thehopetheatre.com

iba had a meteoric rise to fame. Starting life as a mail order catalogue in 1963, the brand inhabited a seven-storey department store on Kensington High Street just 10 years later. Under its founder Barbara Hulanicki, Biba was a phenomenon that has never been replicated. Lasting just over 10 years, it remains influential and interest in this cult fashion and lifestyle label has never waned. Never before had a company brought affordable fashion to the youth market, whilst simultaneously instigating innovations in retailing which are still with us to this day. A new exhibition at The Fashion and Textile Museum looks at Biba’s history, from the first simple shift dresses to the glamorous devoré wraps, sequinned bodices, leopard print coats, trouser suits, floppy hats and feather boas that came to epitomise the Biba look. Barbara Hulanicki herself, now aged 87, was involved in selecting every object for display. When Biba started in the summer of 1963, it offered a revolutionary concept: affordable, up-to-the minute

clothes for a youth market. Opening as a mailorder company, Biba democratised fashion, and the exhibition starts by showcasing a replica of the first ever mail-order Biba dress, a simple shift in pink gingham with a cut-out back and matching headscarf, which quickly became a best-seller. A year later the first Biba boutique opened in a small corner shop on Kensington’s Abingdon Road and quickly became a centre for Swinging London with its clientele ranging from teenagers to celebrities including Twiggy, Mick Jagger, Pattie Boyd, The Beatles, Cher and Anita Pallenberg. From high-class debs to high-street girls, everyone wanted to be part of the Biba experience. “There should be a plaque on 87 Abingdon Road. It transformed the way the ordinary girl in the street dressed...it was a tiny corner shop, an old chemist’s in a quiet residential street. But before long, Biba was Mecca to everyone from shop girls to debs... Not only did the clothes look amazing, you could afford to buy something every week,” said Twiggy in 1997. Biba was always an expression of Hulanicki’s radical and daring vision; in Biba, she created an atmosphere and a way of life. She wanted everyone to be part of the Biba experience, it was never just about making money. The clothes captured a sense of mystery and kudos; these were clothes to perform in, clothes that made you feel fantastic. “What we have tried to do is create a make-believe atmosphere. I think people just need somewhere to go, somewhere that is not down to earth, they don’t have to buy, they just feel happier for it,” she said in 1970. The downstairs galleries of the exhibition feature over 40 complete outfits reflecting the progression from the early, mini-skirted Biba girl to the more sensual vampish look of the Biba woman. Collections of maxi dresses,

hacking jackets, trouser suits and bias-cut satin evening dresses reflect the glamour of 1930s Hollywood, while elsewhere the historic influence of the Pre-Raphaelite and Art Nouveau movements can be seen, with even a Pugin-inspired coat lining. The dark shades of mulberry, aubergine, plum, black, rust, and mustard break from the psychedelic and Pop-art colours of 1960s Biba; while
velvets, chiffons, satins and crepes are seen alongside fabrics like Rayon and Flanesta. Highlight pieces on display include a leopard skin jacket designed for Twiggy (1973) a purple jumbo cord coat with faux fur cuffs and collar (1968) and a black chiffon floor length dress (1970). The clothes reflect not only the progression of women’s lives but also Biba’s success: as Hulanicki became more successful she was able to employ expert pattern cutters allowing for more complex silhouettes and finishing. From the beginning, she always had a complete lifestyle vision in mind for Biba. Accessories were always part of the look and she soon moved into lifestyle, with the first diary sold in the Kensington Church Street shop in 1967. The diary was not just functional, but would recommend restaurants and night spots. Biba’s philosophy was always accessibility and inclusivity. Not only did its low pricepoint make the clothing available to almost everybody, but Barbara Hulanicki

aimed to engage with customers. She created the first full cosmetic range for black skin, and actively supported the nascent queer community by advertising in the gay press two decades before companies such as Dolce and Gabbana were to do the same. Biba was also a reaction to the fustiness of the postwar generation. At the end of the 50s, young women all wanted to look 35 and sophisticated; ‘Youthful Fashion’ did not exist. Biba gave postwar women and girls an affordable lifestyle and turned the conventions of boutique shopping on their head. The store’s communal changing rooms, music, blacked out windows, dim lighting, dark woodwork, painted screens, Art Nouveau mirrors, bentwood hat stand, plants and second-hand furniture were revolutionary. While Mary Quant was selling to the Chelsea set for £30, Biba was selling dresses for £3. Following a model of reverse engineering, Biba would aim to produce their garments using the best quality fabrics they could afford. Early Biba clothes did not even have labels as these were seen as expendable when trying to keep costs down. Foreboding shop assistants were also a thing of the past with the new, cool Biba shop girls. Famously, any Biba shop assistant heard asking “Can I help you, madam?” was sacked on the spot. By September of 1973, Biba had opened as a seven-storey department store on Kensington High Street, selling own-brand products packaged in the distinctive Biba style, with floors dedicated to home furnishings, make-up and accessories, clothing for women, men and children, and even a food hall. Everything was available at Big Biba, from baked beans to wallpaper: it had become the world’s first lifestyle label. Here you could kit out your whole house, do your food shopping, fill your wardrobe and furnish your home. Customers could also have tea with flamingos on the building’s roof garden or spend the evening

watching bands such as the New York Dolls in the 500-seater Rainbow Room restaurant. In just 10 years, Biba had transcended its origins as a mail order business to become the first emporium that denoted a complete lifestyle and was spreading the word to the rest of the UK through another innovation, the Biba catalogues. Realising Biba clothes were rarely featured in Vogue, as they were considered too cheap, Hulanicki decided to create her own editorial in her highly stylised catalogues. Photography was by Helmut Newton and Sara Moon and the graphics had a distinctive style that instantly made them desirable collectors’ items. As Hulanicki said: “It isn’t just selling dresses, it’s a whole way of life.” The Biba Story: 1964-1975 is at the Fashion and Textile Museum from 22 March to 08 September. fashiontextilemuseum.org A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

C R A F T W O R K S Celebrating two decades of Collect at Somerset House this month
L CHARLES BURNAND GALLERY
aunched in 2004 as the first international fair dedicated to contemporary craft and design, Collect is committed and continues to raise the profile of exceptional contemporary craft to the collectors’ market on an annual basis. At a time when contemporary craft has never been more sought after with an active buying market, Collect continues to offer an unparalleled opportunity to acquire new, museum-quality work from living artists internationally – all made within the last five years, and many commissioned especially for the fair. Focusing on exclusivity, reputation, rich narrative and thoughtful curation - seeking variety and diversity in its content and vision, a line-up of close to 40 specialist galleries from across the globe, representing over 400 artist makers, have been selected by an expert advisory panel for this milestone edition. Collectors, interior designers, art advisors and wider enthusiasts, will be vying with arts institutions, such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, to buy and commission the very best in contemporary craft. As well as the seasoned collectors buying at the luxury end of the market, Collect encourages visitors at the beginning of their collecting journey with works starting as low as £500 presented side by side with pieces ranging up to £50,000+. The range of disciplines and materials at Collect spreads widely including ceramics, glass, lacquer, furniture, art jewellery, A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

metalwork, textile and fibre, wood and paper, and pieces embracing more unusual materials such as resin, mica, corn-starch and plastics - as well as reused, repurposed, and recycled materials. Alongside the international galleries, Collect Open, the fair’s platform for experimental proposals and installations by individual artists and collectives, will present 14 exciting new projects by artists hailing from Canada, Portugal, and from all over the UK including Northern Ireland. Collect Open participants are selected by a separate expert advisory panel and are invited to produce work that challenges material, social, political or personal perceptions. “Reaching this milestone edition reinforces not only Collect’s pivotal position as the authority for contemporary craft and design but also strengthens London as a leading cultural destination for the craft and design sector. The fair has continuously pushed boundaries to bring the best in class of new artworks to the market allowing collectors to buy with confidence. The diverse range of galleries for this edition, representing the most exciting international artists making work today, provide yet again exceptional rich content to explore,” says Isobel Dennis, Collect Fair Director. Designed especially for Collect 2024, British textile artist Margo Selby, represented by Cynthia Corbett Gallery (England) will present a large-scale hand-woven artwork, which will hang down the impressive, architecturally distinct Stamp Stair, a five-storey period staircase at Somerset House.

CULTURE • PARTNERSHIP MARK GATISS AS SIR JOHN GIELGUD
CLASH of the
TITANS Why The Motive and the Cue has taken theatreland by storm, with a host of big names involved
TUPPENCE MIDDLETON AS ELIZABETH TAYLOR AND JOHNNY FLYNN AS RICHARD BURTON
It certainly is. It’s also funny and revealing, in part thanks to performances by Gatiss, Johnny Flynn, who plays Burton, and Tuppence Middleton as Taylor, that really get under their characters’ skins. Combined with Mendes’ sweeping, cinematic direction and a design by Es Devlin that moves the action from monochrome rehearsal rooms to the bright lights of sophisticated New York, the play unfolds like a beautifully fashioned sequence of boxes. As Burton and Gielgud battle with their own demons, Thorne, Mendes and the actors offer an insight into theatre itself – the way it uses artifice to reveal the deepest truths about human nature. It’s an astonishing night out. themotiveandthecue.com
PHOTOS: MICHAEL WHARLEY
T
he Motive and the Cue is a love letter to the theatre – and to the people who make it. Jack Thorne’s wonderful play takes as its starting point the famous production of Hamlet on Broadway in 1964, when the Welsh actor Richard Burton took on the role of Shakespeare’s prince. Burton was absolutely at the height of his fame; his marriage to Elizabeth Taylor had made the front pages around the world. The director of the production was Sir John Gielgud, another theatrical great, once the most celebrated Hamlet of his day, but out of favour and out of fashion. The two men – one longing to show he was a serious actor, and one hoping to find a new wave of success – clashed about just about everything, with Taylor watching from the wings like a wise angel. But out of their arguments, faithfully recorded by two other actors who sensed they were living through history, came a production that set the record for performances of Shakespeare on Broadway. From this story, Thorne and director Sam Mendes have fashioned a play that has moved rapidly from the stage of the National Theatre, where it opened in April last year, to the Noel Coward Theatre in the West End, where it is drawing huge and appreciative audiences for a limited run that ends on 23 March. Its remarkable success is based on the fact that its themes extend far beyond its ostensible subject. As Mark Gatiss, who is playing Gielgud, said in a recent interview: “It’s a tribute to the play that it has managed to appeal to audiences who aren’t obsessed with theatrical history, as well as those who are. What they get, I guess, is these two titanic figures having a battle of wills and then finding this moment when they come together. It’s very moving.”

ABSOLUTELY eats out…

he Grade II listed Ladbroke Hall reopened last year as an arts centre after its previous incarnation as Sunbeam Studios. It’s a beautiful space, evoking a grand Edwardian country house and was once the front building of a car factory. Now Italian chef Emanuele Pollini, winner of the 2020 Gambero Rosso International Award, has opened a stylish eaterie here, his first residence in London.

DECOR It’s a slightly unlikely location for anyone not local – you wouldn’t know that there was anything inside if not for the discreet presence of a doorman. But inside, it’s breathtaking. Everything is vast: a huge atrium with high stuccoed ceilings, lots of marble and a huge branch-like feature chandelier above a central black bar. We sit at luxe velvet banquettes at a large table for two and admire the staff uniforms: they’re in boiler suits that reference the factory heritage, but designed by Giles Deacon, so they’re a cut above simple utility.
Elegant, lavish, cinematic
PRICE Primi £16- £29 Secondi £22- £48
The food is fantastic. First off, sourdough and focaccia have excellent flavour and texture. My starter of raw yellowtail with cold pressed tomato yuzu kosho dressing is dreamily fresh and delicate with a slight chilli kick, while tagliatelle with wild boar ragu is rich, meaty and flavourful. For secondi my Cornish monkfish with clams and Datterini tomatoes, poached in Gavi di Gavi, is soft and sweet, almost lobsterish, with notes of lemon and chilli. It’s lovely. And so is saddle of roe deer with chanterelles, artichoke and savoy cabbage, which is a generous plate featuring impossibly tender meat that tastes slightly chocolatey, in a luxurious, velvety way. For pudding, there’s a big focus on gelato, Pollini’s speciality. We try the Sicilian pistachio version, which is wonderful. Nutty and not too sweet – nor too green – it’s topped with roasted pistachios and a small scoop packs a big punch. Also good is Squacquerone, a creamy cow’s cheese served with caramelised figs. We love everything about this place.

Chocolate & Hazelnut Pull-apart Loaf Serves 8 Another chocolate for breakfast situation? Yes! This ‘pull-apart’ loaf, made of layers of pillowy bread dough sandwiched around chocolate hazelnut spread, is a real treat to eat while it’s still warm. 35 mins hands-on time Resting and proving time: 1 hr 30 mins Bake time: 40 mins Total: 2 hrs 45 mins
INGREDIENTS • 1 x 7g/¼oz sachet fast-acting instant yeast • 1 tbsp granulated sugar • 250ml (8fl oz/1 cup) tepid water • 55g (2oz) butter, melted, plus a little extra for brushing the finished loaf • 200g (7oz/1½ cups) strong white bread flour • 150g (5½oz/generous 1 cup) plain (allpurpose) flour, plus extra for dusting • 3 tsp fine sea salt • 200g (7oz) chocolate hazelnut spread • 75g (3oz) hazelnuts, crushed a little flavourless/mild-flavoured oil, for greasing
METHOD 1 Combine the yeast, sugar and tepid water in a large bowl, or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook attachment, stir and leave it to sit and let the yeast ‘bloom’ for 10 minutes (it should look bubbly). 2 Add the melted butter and both types of flour to the yeast mixture, along with the salt, and bring together. Once a shaggy dough has formed, knead for 10 minutes by hand on a floured surface, or 5–7 minutes in the mixer on medium speed, until it forms a smooth, springy ball. Lightly oil the bowl, place the dough back into it, cover with a clean tea towel and leave to rest in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size. 3 Lightly oil a 900g (2lb) loaf tin (pan). Divide the dough into about 12 balls then roll each ball of dough flat on a floured surface and top it with chocolate hazelnut spread in an even layer. Top with some crushed hazelnuts, saving some to scatter over at the end. Fold each piece of chocolate-covered dough in half, creating a semi-circle. Place
these pieces of dough in the tin with the folded edge at the bottom. Leave to prove in a warm place, covered with a tea towel, for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan (200°C/400°F/Gas 6). 4 Bake the risen loaf in the oven for 40 minutes until golden brown on top. 5 Remove from the oven, brush with some melted butter, sprinkle with the remaining crushed hazelnuts and serve warm! 6 The loaf will keep well for up to 2–3 days in an airtight container. Give it a 20-second flash in the microwave to reheat, if you like.
Goat’s Cheese, Fig & Walnut Tart Serves 6 This is one of those recipes that may have you debating whether it totally fits into the savoury category, but it’s a wonderful thing for those who love a cheese course after a meal or the cheese/fruit combination. There is added salt to keep it as a lunchtime treat, and this will sit amazingly as part of a lunch, perhaps alongside a Waldorf salad. 15 mins hands-on time Bake time: 30 mins Total: 45 mins
INGREDIENTS • 320g (11¼oz) ready-rolled all-butter puff pastry • a little flour, for dusting • 125g (4½oz) goat’s cheese • 100g (3½oz) crème fraîche • 4 fresh figs • 75g (2½oz) walnuts, coarsely chopped • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • handful of fresh rocket (arugula), to serve
METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C fan (200°C/400°F/Gas 6) and line a large baking tray with baking parchment (or a silicone liner). 2 Roll out the pastry on a floured surface to create a rectangle a little smaller than your baking tray – it should be about 1cm (½in) thick – and place it on the tray. 3 Mix together the goat’s cheese and crème fraîche in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Spread this mixture onto the pastry, leaving an edge of about 2.5cm (1in) around the border of the pastry to create crusts. 4 Thinly slice the figs lengthways and scatter them over the goat’s cheese mixture, then add the chopped walnuts. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes, until cooked through and the edges are a rich golden colour. Remove and leave to cool on a wire rack, scatter the rocket (arugula) over the top and serve.

Vegan No-bake Chocolate & Pistachio Bars
(tiffin) Serves 8
Tiffin is another word for fridge cake or nobake cakes. This recipe comprises lots of melted chocolate, biscuits and fruit folded together, then left to set in the fridge before slicing. This makes it really versatile, so do play with the flavours/biscuits/addins. This will sit in the fridge for a few days, tempting you to come and take a piece every time you open the door. 15 mins hands-on time Chill time: 1 hr minimum Total: 1 hr 15 mins
INGREDIENTS • 350g (12oz) dark chocolate, chopped • 75g (2½oz) vegan butter • 3 tbsp golden syrup (corn syrup) or light molasses • 100g (3½oz) dried cranberries • 150g (5½oz) digestive biscuits (or graham crackers), coarsely crushed Topping • 200g (7oz) dark chocolate, chopped • 75g (3oz) pistachios, shelled and chopped
METHOD 1 Line a 20cm (8in) square brownie/baking tin with baking parchment. 2 Put the chocolate, butter and golden syrup (corn syrup) in a large heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water (making sure the bottom of the bowl isn’t touching the water) and stir until combined and glossy. 3 Turn off the heat, add the cranberries and crushed biscuits to the melted chocolate mixture and stir until combined. Pour this mixture into the tin and spread it out evenly, pressing to the sides. 4 Make the topping: melt the dark chocolate in the microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring regularly. Once melted, pour it on top of the biscuit base. Sprinkle over the chopped pistachios. Let it set in the fridge for at least an hour (overnight is fine). Once set, cut with a hot knife for perfectly smooth slices. 5 The tiffin will keep well for up to 5–7 days in an airtight container in the fridge.

TRISH MCEVOY The Power of Makeup® Lesson
t’s been some years since my last makeup lesson, so I’m excited to brush up on my skills when I stop by the Trish McEvoy beauty counter in Selfridges on Oxford Street. The American brand is one of the best kept secrets in the beauty industry, pioneering with its skincare and makeup products for over forty years. Tucked in a corner of the store’s beauty department, I’m greeted by the lovely Becky. She explains that the lesson is based on levels, determined by how much time you like to spend in front of the mirror. As a toddler mum it’s all about speed for me, which puts me firmly in the ‘Level 1’ category. First Becky preps my face – cleansing, exfoliating, hydrating, and priming with SPF. A cosmetic dream team, Trish McEvoy and her husband Ronald Sherman (a dermatologist) were amongst the first to combine makeup with skincare in the ‘80s. Their expertise is evident in how amazing the products make my skin feel. Next, it’s time to play with some makeup looks. Becky shows me how to apply each product on one side of my face, and then I mimic it on the other. This ensures that I know how to recreate the look myself. She files each product in the Trish McEvoy Makeup Planner®, the brand’s genius makeup organiser. I usually hate it when anyone else does my makeup, but Becky does an amazing job. My skin is glowing and she’s made my eyes really pop. I leave armed with my very own Makeup Planner® (£35) loaded with my favourite products purchased after the lesson. THE CLINIC HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED
AMANDA AZZOPARDI ANP/INP
BRAND NEW LOOK 2024 is the year of growth at Amanda Azzopardi Aesthetics…
A
fter a successful year, Amanda Azzopardi Aesthetics are excited to welcome a host of exciting additions, welcoming many new clients to start their own journey that creates true confidence from within. The Liverpool clinic faced a stunning transformation in conjunction with an iconic re-brand to better showcase their vision and seamless experience of the treatment process. This has also transpired across their London and Buckley locations.
This year brings an influx of new treatments, one of which being the SLIMYONIK® Air Bodystyler – a compression therapy suit, which stimulates lymphatic drainage to deliver a range of health benefits, such as boosting metabolism and balancing hormones. This therapeutic procedure will leave you feeling rejuvenated from both outside and within, aligning with their core values. They have also introduced the Gelida Arctik-Cryo 21, a new cutting-edge technology that provides remarkable fat-freezing results and includes extra programmes for pain management and skin concerns. This
can treat a range of areas, from stubborn fat and cellulite to eczema and acne. Amanda also offers fantastic skin treatments, whether you are struggling with particular skin concerns or wish to retain a youthful glow. Following an in-depth complimentary consultation utilising their OBSERV 520x skin scanner, Amanda can prescribe you medical-grade skincare via GetHarley, an online portal that delivers direct to your door. This revitalised skincare routine can be used alongside innovative skin treatments they offer, such as Carbon Peel or LaseMD Ultra. Another popular treatment is thread lifts, aiming to lift and tighten the skin to restore your youthful appearance. This focuses on predominant areas that show early signs of ageing – eyes, cheeks and jowls. Following the procedure, you will notice an immediate lift in the treated area, creating a subtle yet impactful look. Amanda specialises in intimate health, acting as a pioneer in the Intimate Rejuvenation treatment that aims to treat multiple intimate concerns. The treatment is completely pain-free with no downtime. Introducing these treatments and newly developed technologies would not be feasible without Amanda’s invaluable expertise and deep commitment to her clients. Amanda is also keen to tailor this to her clientele to best support their journey. This year, a core theme they wish to pursue is growth. They are committed to continue delivering fantastic support to clients, highlighting that this goes beyond treatments. Amanda is on-hand for any questions you may have, with advice and treatments completely tailored to your needs. Here, growth isn’t merely about the outward enhancements they provide, but also the inner journey towards confidence and self-assurance. Whether it’s rejuvenating skincare treatments or making subtle enhancements, they nurture every individual’s vision with care and expertise. At their clinics, growth isn’t just a concept; it’s their ethos. 0151 558 0742 / 020 8191 2811 amanda@amandaazzopardi.co.uk amandaazzopardi.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

SLOW FLOW Carly Glendinning meets Sarah Malcolm, founder of At Home with Sarah, fitness app focused on mobility training
Q How did you get into teaching yoga? A I wanted to learn more about yoga (having practiced for 7 years and falling in love with how it made me feel) but after day 1 of my 200 hour yoga teacher training, I felt it deep in my bones that this was the path for me and I’ve never looked back.
HULA TIME This weighted hula hoop is designed to help you burn fat and boost flexibility. It can be adjusted to match your waist size and has a weighted ball for enhanced performance. The perfect addition to your home gym. £28.99. amazon.co.uk
Q Tell us about your platform 'At Home with Sarah'? A At Home with Sarah was born in lockdown after the success of my zoom classes and now has almost 200 videos. It’s a place to come home to yourself. To check in with how you’re feeling. And the practices are all there with that in mind. My classes are not about physical appearances or whether or
not you can do the splits, it’s about how you feel when you turn down the noise of busy life. A place for you to find peace and ultimately feel at home in your own body. Q And what about your yoga retreats? A They are an extension of my teaching and values. Nothing needs to be perfect. I invite my guests to come as they are and rest as much as or as little as they need. There is always a mix of soothing and energizing yoga practices, alongside hearty, delicious, and comforting food! Mixed with the biggest dose of nature and just wonderfully feel good vibes. Nothing is restricted on my retreats, it’s all about enjoyment.
Q Has your relationship to movement changed since you became a mother? A Oh yes x 1000! Motherhood has been the biggest learning of my life. I met a whole new person in myself, and having had an emergency c section my recovery was very different to what I imagined. I’m stiffer than ever so I appreciate the slow practices and the power of the breath so much more now. But equally reminding myself that I will find my strength again with the stronger practices when I’m ready.

he Wishbone Chair, designed in 1949, was part of the first collaboration between Hans J. Wegner and Carl Hansen & Søn and it has been in continuous production ever since. By combining the top rails and arms into a single piece, Wegner took a giant leap in furniture design with this piece. To give stability to the steambent top and ensure comfortable support, he developed the characteristic Y-shaped back that earned the chair its famous name. The woven paper cord seat was originally chosen as a substitute after WW2 when materials were in short supply, but Wegner grew to appreciate paper cord for its strength, design qualities, and natural look and feel. Wegner had an impressive career, with more than 500 chairs in his portfolio, but his Wishbone Chair holds a special place in the design world and has achieved iconic status worldwide, celebrated for its functionality and classic, timeless aesthetic. Each Wishbone Chair consists of 14 parts made in oak, beech, walnut, mahogany, ash, or teak. All wood is certified and/or from sustainable forestry. More than 100 production steps are required to assemble the Wishbone Chair, most of which are carried out by hand. Here are some of them. • Sanding is essential to the final finish of the piece to achieve a smooth and tactile surface. • All parts are assembled with glue by hand. • The parts are pressed into place to ensure optimal
stability, using a special compressor designed just for the Wishbone Chair. • The frame is examined and all joints are double checked. • The Wishbone-part is glued into the backrest of the chair. • The backrest and Wishbone-part is assembled onto the frame of the chair. • The height of the chair is measured to make sure it is even and stands on all four legs. If not, the feet are sanded until the chair is completely even. • Finalizing the assembly, a special torch is used to make sure no glue is visible. Any leftover glue is removed with a soft sponge. To achieve a beautiful surface, additional durability and easy cleaning, the Wishbone chair is treated with either oil, soap, lacquer or paint. The seat of the CH24 is hand-woven using 150 meters of paper cord. It takes an experienced weaver one hour to create the CH24’s seat. • The seat is woven with a special envelope-woven technique. The first piece of paper cord is stapled onto the inner frame, and from there on, the seat is secured with nothing but tight weaving and special knots. • A weaver uses 5-6 meters paper cord at the time and ties a sheet bend knot when combining the pieces of paper cord. The knots are hidden inside the weaving. • Once the seat is woven, a small plate of authenticity is placed underneath the seat with the chair’s unique serial number • A final quality check makes sure that the chair is even and lives up to the quality standards of Carl Hansen & Søn After being processed by eight sets of skilled hands, the Wishbone Chair is ready to leave the factory located on the Danish island of Funen. Get insights into the traditional techniques of paper cord weaving at London Craft Week in the Carl Hansen & Søn Flagship Store London, 48A Pimlico Road, SW1W 8LP 020 77308454

arpe Diem Beds is the designer brand that creates unique and well-designed bedroom environments you never want to leave. And to enhance your bedroom's b e auty, the cla ssic houndstooth pattern associated with Christian Dior and Jackie Kennedy, is part of a limited Design Edition that fuses French luxury with Carpe Diem Beds’ Swedish heritage for a perfect blend of chic aesthetics and top-modern Swedish craftsmanship. Carpe Diem Beds has been developing beds for over 25 years with the goal of creating a feeling of near weightlessness and amazing comfort. The founder, Börje Thuleskär, used knowledge from his chiropractor profession and collaborated with the Spinal Unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg to lay the foundation for the first models and Carpe Diem Beds' patented Contour Pocket System. Carpe Diem Beds is much more than a bed, it is a lifestyle brand that puts focus on the entire design experience. The beds are designed to be as beautiful to look at as they are comfortable. A complete design experience for the bedroom that allows you to create an individual retreat in which you can relax completely. Now the French world of fashion is united with the beautiful and natural Swedish aura that Carpe Diem Beds represents. The Design Edition is inspired by Carpe Diem Beds' Swedish heritage and the graphic tones characterising the nature around the country’s west coast, and the exclusive feeling reinforced by the classic houndstooth patterned textile with strong roots in French fashion houses like

Christian Dior. An elegant and timeless classic that never goes out of style – the perfect match with Carpe Diem Beds' soul and range. “With this Design Edition in the classic houndstooth pattern, we combine qualities from the world of fashion with high recognition that exudes the same timeless and at the same time eternally modern design, with our vision of a bedroom so appealing, timeless, and elegant that you never want to leave it,” says Rui France, Store Manager at the Marylebone Flagship store. The Swedish sleep experts have devised a whole philosophy centered around the bedroom environment, based on the principle that the whole space should be designed as a holistic concept dedicated to the art of sleep. This philosophy comes to life at their Wigmore Street showroom, where they offer a Sleep Consultation to help you create a personalised sleep environment. This involves much more than just choosing a mattress. The store is dedicated to optimising the bedroom environment to create an oasis of calm, and visitors can experience the company’s ethos first hand under the guidance of manger Rui Franca. And while choosing the perfect mattress for you is at the heart of the experience, there’s a strong focus on bedroom design and streamlining, so that the bed you choose can be enclosed in an environment that’s conducive to optimum sleep health. In addition to the design edition of the Sandö continental bed, the classic French pattern also adorns a dog bed, throw pillows, and footstool/pouffe, too. Everything designed to offer you the complete bedroom experience. carpediembeds.co.uk has concessions in Harrods and Heals, plus a shop at 15 Wigmore Street, W1

How interior designer Juliette Byrne reimagined a Grade II listed Belgravia townhouse with a focus on family, art and strength training

ituated in the heart of Belgravia, this impressive Grade II listed townhouse is the epitome of luxury living. Set over six storeys, this modern family home has it all: four bedrooms, five bathrooms, two home offices, a double media room, dining-reception room, kitchen, utility room with wine storage, elevator and even an entire floor dedicated to the clients’ love for martial arts. Originally from Spain, this dynamic and creative family wanted to showcase their unique personalities, passions and cultural heritage in the new design concept. Against a tight timescale of ten months, the project began with a complete strip out. Elec-

trical plans were reworked to integrate the latest smart home and AV technology. Almost every piece of artwork and furniture was made bespoke to exact specifications with the clients’ needs in mind. It was equally important to be innovative as it was to honour the inherent architectural elements of an old property which included the intricate decorative cornicing, wrought iron stair spindles, chimneypieces and a magnificent onyx wall feature in the ground floor dining room. With a bespoke 3D vine leaf wall sculpture by Art et Floritude and an arresting pendant light from Apparatus, the entrance hallway makes a dramatic first impression and sets the tone for the rest of the interior. The clients’ high regard for pioneering craftsmanship is demonstrated in the running motif of verre
églomisé glass mirrors throughout the project. This is used most memorably in the elevator, where the mirror panel by Studio Peascod is combined with warm LED lighting to emit a celestial glow. Mounted on it are alabaster sconces from Apparatus. What used to be a stuffy formal reception room has now been converted into a multi-functional space to work, train, play and entertain. The design team worked closely with the joiner to maximise storage space for suitcases, holiday decorations and various sporting equipment. The custom-made sliding door panels are constructed of bronze tinted mirrors framed with a slim brass trim and aged timber in resin. The custom ‘Opus’ wall/pull-up bar system and weight rack in brushed brass from Gym Marine elevate the quotidian routine of strength training. Many discusA B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Ole Wanscher (1903-1985) was integral to the core aesthetic and functionality of modern Danish design. His classic and contemporary designs made him popular. In 1958, the Danish newspaper Politiken wrote: “Owning a Wanscher chair is an adventure every day, and will be so even several hundred years from now, for this is how long it lasts”. Today, his modern classics are still revered for their detail and his deep respect for materials. sions revolved around the physics of the hanging punch bag; in the end we settled on suspending it from dark bronze chains on a fitted ceiling track running along the length of the room. Given the clients’ individual flair and background in fashion, it was clear from the start that art was going to be a significant part of the design DNA. Every room and hallway, down to the smallest WC, was considered worthy of adornment. Walking through the house is akin to wandering around a contemporary art gallery and stepping into an experience of movement, light and colour. The design aimed to inject character and drama while keeping the schemes light and bright. Contrasting materials were mixed liberally - luxurious velvets, funky hair-on-hides, liquid textured bronze finishes, see-through alabaster and striking marbles hand-picked from the yard all mingle confidently to sum up the clients’ glamourous yet edgy style. Favourite pieces include the ‘Agnes’ light from Roll & Hill installed on the first floor landing. Underneath is a slim ‘Arca’ console table from The Invisible Collection with the ‘Iris’ table lamp is from Holly Hunt. Bespoke joinery allows for maximum creative freedom and storage solutions, especially in smaller spaces. One of the more challenging designs was the bunk bed for the clients’ daughter. It comprised of a single bed at the high level with a plush built-in sofa below that will be handy for sleepovers. Clever storage space was implemented in the box stairs and slim bookcase with adjustable shelves, as well as drawers underneath the sofa.

The main carcass is spray painted in Zoffany’s Paris Grey while the wood-effect bunk bed slats and box stairs are made of an engineered veneer. LED strip lights in the box stairs and bookcase give off a warm and inviting glow. Many clients like to situate the media room in the basement but in this case, the entire top floor was transformed into a light-filled space where the whole family can enjoy watching TV and playing computer games as well as for the children to do their homework. On the floor is Corian’s ‘Sparkling White’ which gives off a squeaky clean feel with a slight shimmer. As frequent cooks, it was essential for the clients to have a utilitarian kitchen that can keep up with their routine. Generous storage space was incorporated into the kitchen cabinetry for the numerous appliances that are to be kept out of sight when not in use. Corian is used again in the countertops as it is durable and non-porous, making it easy to clean. The Gabriel Scott bar stools have a sleek black metal profile that complements the trio of ‘Black Cat’ pendants from Holly Hunt above. A fabulous portrait of Diana Ross by Dutch artist Karin Vermeer adds a punch of colour. Besides the main hallways, polished plaster is also used in the ceiling and walls of the lower ground vaulted bathroom. The smooth yet raw surface grants an urban vibe of avant-garde underground clubs. Matt black sanitaryware, soft LED lighting, wall-to-ceiling ‘Envergure’ sculpture by Art et Floritude and Kelly Wearstler sconces make it even cooler.

our kitchen might be professionally designed for optimum storage efficiency, but there’s only so much an architect can do. Breakfast cupboards, walk-in pantries, shelves, rotating cabinet interiors and deep drawers all seem marvellous when new, but what’s often overlooked is that all of this wonderful storage space requires maintenance. And while some people have a natural ability to order their cupboards neatly and consistently, many of us struggle. Even the most beautiful kitchen units often hide an inner chaos. Open a drawer and you might find an overflowing mishmash of opened packets of pasta, forgotten spices, tins that belong to different eras and expired lentils. In short, kitchen designers can lead the horse to water, but they can’t make it drink. There are probably very few people who aren’t in need of some kind of overhaul of their larders. And in the spirit of spring cleaning, we have emptied ours and we’re going to start as we mean to go on. The key to kitchen cupboard health? Storage containers. They may not sound glamorous, but anyone who wants to open a cupboard or draw and immediately see what’s inside should invest in a variety of clear vessels in different shapes and sizes.
Our favourites are Sistema’s square stacking ones. Their clever square shape allows for every inch of cupboard space to be used to full effect. Also brilliant are Zwilling’s fridge boxes, which store leftovers in microwaveable glass, ensuring that they won’t be lost at the back of the fridge. Another handy accessory is a set of Hokam bowls, which stack together for storage and are suitable for fridge, oven and microwave. They’re pretty, with interchangeable lids, and have multiple uses that make them earn their keep countless times over. So if you can find the strength, why not take everything out of your cupboards and reconsider it all. Maybe all that’s standing between you and a well-rdered pantry is a single purchase of some well-considered storage jars. You’re welcome.

Forecasting the five biggest kitchen trends set to lead 2024 B y PAU L J E N K I N S O N

n response to today’s dynamic kitchen landscape, homeowners are ushering in a new era of personalisation by exploring exciting combinations of colours, finishes, shapes, textures, and materials. This growing demand for choice signifies a nuanced shift in kitchen design, where every detail seamlessly harmonises with individual lifestyles, reflecting distinct personalities and tastes. Kitchens are evolving beyond their traditional roles, transforming into extended living spaces— dynamic and versatile environments ideal for socialising, entertaining, and working. As we enter 2024, this transformative mindset paves the way for a holistic approach to kitchen design, introducing a fresh palette of colours and materials to infuse inspiration, joy, and wellness into the heart of the home.
A return to the natural 2024 will see a return to natural aesthetics, heralding the revival of warm wood tones. This trend seamlessly integrates both bold and subtle uses of wooden elements, spanning cabinetry, worktops, panelling, and wood grain effects, creating a lush and organic ambience in the kitchen. We also predict that dualtone cabinetry that combines the use of painted and wooden doors will rise in popularity as a way to artfully

introduce a more subtle contrast to both bright and neutral colours alike. We’re also seeing a resurgence of herringbone in kitchen design, including through hardwood floors, textiles, and tiles. Incorporating wood into the overall kitchen design not only adds depth and warmth but also introduces a natural element that transforms the kitchen into a relaxing haven. We expect to see solid timber kitchens taking centre stage within 2024, as homeowners desire durability in equal measure to style.
Red (…and black) Conversely, a new direction in kitchen aesthetics sees homeowners start to embrace the allure of dark, earthy cabinetry, forging dramatic and luxurious spaces. Characterised by deep blacks, reds, purples, and browns, this trend offers a striking counterpoint to the prevailing incorporation of wooden elements, softening the impact of darker colours to establish a well-balanced, inviting atmosphere. At LochAnna, we are seeing more homeowners offsetting dark cabinetry with lighter elements such as quartz countertops or light wood flooring, to create a visually captivating contrast and balance. The introduction of metallic finishes—gold, brass, or chrome—in hardware, taps, or lighting fixtures further breaks up any potential monotony, adding a sense of depth and ornamentation. Look out for unexpected warm
colours like brown and burgundy, which are set to diversify the colour palette and challenge the dominance of green and blue kitchens in 2024.
Gather around The rapid pace of modern living, alongside the fact that separate dining rooms have become far less commonplace, has put an even bigger emphasis on the importance of carving out a space for quality family time. This has led to a rise in popularity of communal or banquette seating within the kitchen. The practicality of social seating transforms the kitchen into a space that encourages all members of the household to dine together, fostering a sense of family time, and has the added benefit of creating extra storage space. For example, a kitchen island with banquette seating can maximise functionality with hidden storage, such as lift-up seats or built-in drawers, offering both comfort and a hidden place to store kitchen essentials. This not only enhances the kitchen’s aesthetic appeal but also contributes to a clutter-free space, that allows for meaningful moments within the home.
More green Green dominated as the most popular kitchen colour in the past year, propelled by the biophilic design movement, positioning it as a contemporary neutral

as overhead lighting, décor, or artwork that blends old-world charm with contemporary functionality. We are seeing the incorporation of nostalgic decor, as homeowners opt for vintage-inspired taps, furniture, lighting, and decor to infuse character and a sense of history into their kitchen spaces, with seventies inspired kitchens being heavily discussed throughout 2023. This design style reflects a departure from the purely practical and sleek, favouring the integration of standalone pieces that mirror individual tastes. The rising popularity of nostalgic styling is expected to endure throughout 2024, contributing significantly to the creation of a warmer and visually captivating ‘new meets old’ atmosphere at the heart of the home.
In 2024, we predict that the trend of “modern nostalgia” or vintage styling is going to reshape kitchens, with a shift towards incorporating statement pieces such

seamlessly linking the outdoors and interiors. From deep forests to comforting olives and sages, green’s versatility harmonises with various neutral colours and textures. Whether on walls, tiles, or cabinets, green is set to remain a popular choice for 2024. Beyond a colour trend, homeowners are also trying to go greener too, with an increased awareness of the environmental impact of non-sustainable materials driving interest in eco-credentials and longevity, reflected in higher spending on recyclable kitchen doors like LochAnna’s Eterna range, exemplifying a ‘quality over quantity’ ethos.

or this family with two young children, the family bathroom had to feature a large bath and spacious shower, plus, of course, storage. The traditional boat bath was perfect for this space as the option to paint the exterior allowed us to tie together the desire for classic-contemporary with a nod to industrial. The bath’s exterior was painted in Farrow & Ball’s Off Black, contrasting beautifully against the dusty blue panelling and complemented by unlacquered brass fixtures and fixtures that will age over time and develop a natural patina. An industrial-style shower screen separates the walkin shower from the rest of the room, with beautiful blue tiles adorning the interior space. With the brassware being minimalist and contemporary in style, the chosen finish was unlacquered brass meaning it will develop a natural patina as it ages over time again adding a sense of character. So, when it came to the floor tiles, the client was keen for something patterned and more classic.

Building an extra room in your garden is a simple way of creating more space
Q Why are Garden Rooms becoming so popular? A Everyone will have noticed the recent trend of new rooms appearing in the rear gardens of houses large and small. These are not the traditional timber sheds with a bit of carpet thrown on the floor. These are beautiful well-built rooms with light streaming in through bifold doors, pictures on the wall, sofas, workspaces, TVs showing sport, yoga mats, artists’ easels and anything to embrace the feeling of an escape from the house. These are the new Garden Rooms where you can work, relax and entertain.
Q So, what are the main uses for a Garden Room? A First place goes to the home office. An escape from the dining room table or the spare bedroom. A psychological break, away from the demands and temptations of the house, and a calm independent environment to concentrate on the opportunities of the work-day. Second place goes to the home gym. During lockdown people installed a treadmill or an exercise bike in the hallway, but now there is a fantastic space with fresh air and light at the end of the garden. After that, the teenage hangout-room comes in third place. The kids are not banished; but, at last, they have their own space to do gaming stuff, watch incomprehensible TV and not be embarrassed by parents and siblings. But let us not forget the vast army of musicians, and model makers and hobbyists and bridge players who just need their own space.
Q What can you build and do you need planning permission? A The general rule is that if your room is a maximum of 2.5M high and doesn’t take over half the garden you can build under Permitted Development rules and you don’t need planning permission. However, there are many more complex regulations and a specialist builder or designer should be able to help with what is allowed. Anything that might include overnight accommodation will need planning permission. Q Can a Garden Room add value to your house? A There is much anecdotal evidence that a well-built, well-insulated garden room can add between 5% and 15% to the value of your property. This is particularly true of smaller properties where an office in the garden is a sought-after feature. Q So how do you get a Garden Room? A There are several specialist Garden Room builders and designers who serve the local communities in Surrey. Choose a local professional company who can offer advice, a guarantee for their work and show you a portfolio of good quality garden rooms in the area. gardenroomsbydrumbeat.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s 109

A PASSION FOR AUSTRIA INNSBRUCK
If you're heading to the Tirol to ski, why not stop over in Innsbruck? This beautiful city is often seen as simply a gateway to the mountains but it offers lots to do and see, as we discover on page 112.

hat’s the best way to go skiing with your kids? If your answer is “don’t” then I salute your strength of character to resist, if your answer is “there is no best way, it’s always exhausting?” then my friend, I have the hotel for you. Alpenrose, one of five Familux Resort group hotels, is set in the Austrian Tyrol and it is the answer for a stress-free family winter holiday, and, frankly, at any other time of year too. We recently visited as a family of four, with our daughters aged nine and two. After only three days, none of us wanted to leave. Alpenrose has everything that each family member could want or need and they do it with joy. We arrive to an efficient and warm welcome they know exactly who we are - a glass of fizz for the adults and a personalised water bottle and gummy
bears for the kids. There’s a step at reception so that little ones can see over the desk, and this is just a hint of the thoughtful touches to come. Elsewhere, I’m usually apologetically asking for highchairs or a microwave, but Alpenrose has everything geared up for families. And I mean everything. Changing mats, nappies, wipes, bibs, colouring pencils at the table, rocking horses and games tables in the bar, kids cutlery and crockery, potties, buggies, baby monitor system, toys in the room, built-in bed guards. You name it (or forget it) and they’ve got it. The room is huge, with a mini sink in the bathroom perfect for kiddy clean-ups, and the girls are exploring for at least 20 minutes before the usual snack demands. I call that a win. The room is spacious (the kids have their own room within the room) and has the comfiest beds we’ve slept in for a while. We spend the first afternoon exploring the hotel; it’s worth taking your time over this. As well as a beautifully equipped kids club (from

six weeks to 10 years) there are the two pools (one with slides, naturally), gym, spa, a craft room, teen room, climbing wall, softplay, bouncy castle, basketball court, theatre… not to mention the indoor golf, go-karting and much more besides. In summer there are incredible outdoor playgrounds too. Venturing outside, the main ski lift is just over the road; and while there’s a baby slope in the hotel itself (perfect for our two-year old) the nursery slope for lessons is about a 10 minute walk away. Luckily if you’re signed up to ski school (which you can do at the hotel, naturally) they shuttle the kids in hotel minibuses. The ski shop is just next to the lobby too - so there’s no hassle over getting equipment - or where to keep it. And while you still might not get a chance to ski alone with your partner, you’re going to have a better chance here than most places. We only had trouble because our youngest (a nursery old-timer) refused kids club. And that’s ok – it is a family holiday after all. Mealtimes at Alpenrose are a dream: laden buffets for breakfast and lunch, with special kids options (sandwiches with smiley faces and a pancake machine the kids were obsessed with) at all times, plus gourmet dinner for parents in the evenings. They even provide bags to take snacks away for your daily adventures and a snack and drinks station is available throughout the day. So as with most ski holidays, you’ll probably leave feeling a touch fuller than when you arrived.

INNSBRUCK IS IN If you haven’t been to Innsbruck, tag on a night or two there too: this fascinating city is small enough to walk around and charming enough to satisfy
fairytale fantasies. We took advantage of the Innsbruck card which included all our transport and entry to Lumagica and the Hofberg Palace, and if we’d had more time we could have entered any of 22 attractions, including the famous ski jump, the Swarovski museum experience, and cable cars getting you right to the peaks in minutes, one of which was designed by Zaha Hadid. There’s so much more to see - we’ll definitely be back!

How do you make helping out at home fun for your kids?
I
n a world that is constantly evolving certain parenting methods now seem outdated. Parents are now expected to be a little less strict on their little ones and children aren’t expected to help out as much as they once were, many times leading to misbehaviour amongst children. Pep and Perk and their creators encourage parents to engage their toddlers and kids to help out with simple household activities with their new album release - ‘HELPING OUT!’.
HELPING OUT!
from a young age not only contributes to the smooth functioning of a household but also fosters the development of essential life skills. There are numerous benefits associated with children actively participating in household chores, we’ve outlined some of the simple activities that your toddlers can be introduced to below. • Washing the dishes • Tiding up a room • Vaccuming • Cleaning the table/kitchen counter • Taking out the trash • Making their bed
'HELPING OUT!' is a collection of catchy tunes that will help make the daily routine more fun! From washing hands and brushing teeth, to cleaning up a room, they’ve got you covered with some amazing new songs. Put on 'Scoot Scoot' for a fun way to get out the door, or jam out to a rocking new cover of 'You’ve Got A Friend In Me'.
Make it easy and make it fun! Encourage your kids to help you out with simple household chores together with Pep and Perk. Pep and Perk, whose creators also brought you the PAW Patrol theme song and over 100 songs from Blaze & The Monster Machines, will put a smile on your face and help you encourage your little ones to help out with their fun, encouraging, and educational songs! So tune in, and immerse yourself and your kids into the catching tunes of Pep and Perk who won’t let you sit still!

BIRTH RECOVERY Absolutely Mama Editor Carly Glendinning reports on the growing trend of women investing in their postnatal health…
I
t might come as no surprise that postnatal care in the NHS is woefully underfunded. As reported by the Royal College of Midwives, the system is at breaking point, and frustratingly new mothers are being forced to take matters into their own hands. The positive is a growing awareness among new mums about the importance of prioritising postnatal health. If you’re expecting, or have just delivered a fresh new human, read on to find out more about where to start looking for additional help beyond the limitations of the NHS.
Specialist physiotherapy Pregnancy and birth take a huge toll on our bodies. According to the Department of Health, 1 in 3 women are still experiencing urinary incontinence three months after pregnancy. Specialist physiotherapy can help strengthen the pelvic floor, as well as help with other conditions such as diastasis recti, and pelvic girdle pain. The Mummy MOT has a
team of trained physiotherapists, osteopaths, midwives, and GPs throughout the UK. themummymot.com
Feeding support Extra support during the feeding journey can make the world of difference to your physical and mental health as well as the bond with your baby. Kathryn Stagg is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and can support mothers with everything from issues with latching, to bonding, and milk supply. kathrynstaggibclc.com
Postnatal fitness and well-being ‘Bounce back’ culture will probably never go away, but we are seeing a trend towards lower impact postnatal fitness with an emphasis on physical recovery as well as mental wellbeing. One of my favourite
on-demand platforms is the LDM Pregnancy Project from celebrity personal trainer Louisa Drake. Her programme includes resistance, strength, and breathwork exercises. louisadrake.com
Mental health support There’s a growing recognition in the significance of mental health during the postnatal period. Illiyin Morrison is a midwife, birth debrief facilitator, and author. She specialises in perinatal trauma and can support with anything from a difficult birth experience, to difficulty in conception, miscarriage, still birth, the postnatal period, infant feeding, and relationship difficulties. mixingupmotherhood.com
Alternative therapies In addition to conventional healthcare, alternative therapies can provide a holistic approach to postpartum recovery. Laura Bardell, founder of Mama Nurtured is a postnatal wellness expert and postnatal doula. She is trained in Kinesiology, which aims to address imbalances and overall well being focusing on the body’s energy systems. After many years of IVF treatment, and then difficulty with breastfeeding, I had a powerful treatment with Laura. She used muscle testing and other diagnostic tools to identify and then correct imbalances in my body. It helped me to begin the journey of releasing a lot of trauma as well as feel more energised. mamanurtured.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Marking International Women's Day, we meet four innovative female business leaders
AMANDA A Z ZO PA R D I BUS I NE S S : Founder, Amanda Azzopardi Aesthetic W E B S I TE : amandaazzopardi.co.uk
Q Tell us a bit about your background before launching your business… A I was educated to the highest HONS standards, holding a bachelor’s degree in nursing, Graduate Diploma in Midwifery, Masters in Midwifery, specialising in women’s health. I completed a master’s in Advanced Clinical Practice and Independent Nurse Prescribing. I am registered with the NMC, with over 25 years both local and international experience in midwifery, women’s health and medical/aesthetic experience within the NHS/private industry. I started my career in Aesthetics in Australia in 1995, then relocated my family to the UK in 2010, growing my current 3 clinics whilst still working full time in the NHS emergency department from 20152022, leaving the NHS in 2023. I am a member of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses (BACN.) The clinic is CQC registered and regulated, Save Face registered and a finalist at 2023 Safety In Beauty Awards in the Hair restoration category and is currently an Aesthetics Awards Finalist in the category ‘The Amedica Award for Best Clinic North of England’. Q What was the inspiration behind setting up your business? A My love of skin and assisting people to feel well through their ageing process. Q What challenges have you experienced along the way? A It is a challenging and fast paced industry, so keeping up with new technologies and ensuring they are aligned with what my patients want to achieve, and having a core knowledge base of all my treatments to ensure high safety standards are maintained. Q What elements of your business/ industry keep you passionate? A My passion stems from the patients’ love of their results, the

gratitude we receive as their expectations are met and the energy and care my team and I put into their ageing journey every day to drive the business forward and really make each patient's experience individual. Within the industry the support I receive from senior medical colleagues is irreplaceable and strengthens my ability to provide an outstanding patient journey for my clients. Q How was 2023 as a business year? A Last year was an outstanding year of growth, expansion of the premises, rebranding and expanding our team, the success of building these strong foundations will be seen in 2024. We are excited for 2024 as we focus the future of Amanda Azzopardi Aesthetics towards a health and wellbeing model, to raise awareness of the importance of educating our patients. All stages of the ageing process must be addressed to age well, rather than focusing on chronic illness when it occurs, empowering patients to take control and understand prevention. Acknowledging the importance of the function of the gut, mind, energy and body health, and the fundamental principles behind optimising healthy on all levels.
Q Any new products or initiatives in 2024? A To support this business model we are currently developing a bigger team who share our goals and vision, we have bought in a Slimyonik device for lymphatic drainage to improve inflammation from skin disorders such as acne/rosacea to increase metabolic circulation, reduce weight and improve all signs of menopause. This combined with a fat reduction device from Gelida will help us achieve better health outcomes for our clients whole body aesthetic requirements. Q On a personal level, what are your hopes and dreams for 2024? A On a more personal level we have many celebrations this year, my eldest daughter celebrating her 30th birthday will commence the celebrations and spending time out of our busy schedules with families is always rewarding, just to celebrate the small things. Travelling home to Australia would be a dream come true for all of us this year, to visit family and friends. Taking a long deserved winter break in a sunny location would be rewarding.

CHARLOTTE F I N D L AT E R BUS I N E S S : Founder,
Charlotte Findlater Design W E B S I TE : charlottefindlater.co.uk
Q What was the inspiration for setting up your business? A I’ve always thought that design can have equal importance to that of architecture. Traditionally, things can be very dogmatic – you do the architecture, someone else does the interiors, someone else does the furniture, the fabric, the landscaping etc. But I believe design is all-encompassing. This was the inspiration for the business, our turnkey design approach enables clients to have a single point of contact throughout their project, from initial concept through to completion and handover. My ethos sits at the core of the business, schemes are highend, bespoke and focused on craftsmanship. Pure and raw materials are used to create luxurious, natural, and sustainable spaces that boost wellbeing. Historically architecture and interiors may have been clearly separated as services, with interiors being the ‘decoration’ of a project, but throughout my career I have always embraced the overlap over where these two meet, and this was the catalyst for Charlotte Findlater Design.
Q What is your dream project? A My ultimate goal is to develop a small
collection of stunning luxury houses, all with renewable infrastructure and ideally off grid. These homes would challenge the status quo, all be crafted from natural materials entirely sourced from the UK. I would love to have the opportunity to design a true wellness retreat, either in the UK or abroad. I dream of the day when we’ve truly accomplished a 100-percent circular and carbon-negative project through design excellence. Q What inspires you? A Something different every day. It can
go from people that are close to me to new people I encounter and their stories. Travel memories are something I always go back to for inspiration. The sights, food, art, and music that you get exposed to when travelling build up as a continuous reference library. Q What advice would you give
to your younger self as you embarked on your career? A Slow down, find balance, and really appreciate where you are and be present in that moment and opportunity. Dream big and go for it. Don’t be afraid of failure – out of failure comes learning and resilience. Those two things have really helped me to become a stronger person and leader.
Q How do you switch off? A Family time is a big one for me. I
love being out in nature, breathing in the fresh air, listening to the sounds of nature and going on long walks in the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales with our dog. Running and meditation are also really important parts of my life that help me unwind. Q What comes next? A As luxury architectural interior
designers, we are proud to be encouraging those we work and collaborate with to share their sustainability goals. In addition to ensuring clarity and purpose in their supply chain, we are looking to partner with a number of charities to ensure that any unwanted items from a project can be re-purposed and re-used before being considered for recycling. We are also on our B-Corp journey. B-Corp Certification is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials. I believe in the power for businesses to be a force for good and that we the leaders of our businesses have the ability and responsibility to balance the needs of people, planet and profit.

Q Tell us a bit about your background A After 13 years at Hurtwood, most of those in the
capacity of Deputy Head, I can look back and see this was a natural progression from my previous working roles. There was never much debate for me once I left school - I was pretty much destined to be a teacher. Bossy, organised and loquacious as a young person, it seemed a natural fit. However, despite these management tendencies, it has always been important to me to remain in the classroom, at the 'chalk-face' teaching the discipline I am trained in and passionate about: geography.

TINA JACKSON BUS I N E S S : Hurtwood House School W E B S I TE : hurtwoodhouse.com
Q Tell us a bit about your background A After PPE at Oxford, I followed the
herd to London working for Coopers and Lybrand, but finding the corporate world a little soulless, I decided to go into teaching which was something I had always wanted to do. Having taught at Rossall School, I moved to Hurtwood House when I married Cosmo (now headmaster) as Hurtwood was a family business. Set up by my father-in-law 54 years ago, Hurtwood specialises exclusively in the Sixth Form and I jumped at the chance to teach nothing but A Level. Having seen a couple of Hurtwood’s West-End style theatre productions I knew there was something special about the place. I was eager to see if it really was ‘the most exciting school in England’. It is creativity which underpins Hurtwood and teaching History for 18 years I enjoyed encountering intelligent and enthusiastic students who were equally at home analysing the provenance of sources as they were role playing Mussolini.
Q How was 2023 as a business year? A 2023 was a wonderful year and the
highlight was our 10-night extravaganza musical ‘Legally Blonde’ complete with professional musicians, choreographers and costume designers with over
90 students involved. As Head of Admissions, I now interview prospective students and it is so rewarding to watch them flourish. We are currently filming a new podcast ‘Beyond the Hill’ where ex-students come back to discuss their success and reminisce about Hurtwood. We have had West End and Hollywood stars, entrepreneurs and successful musicians returning and it has been a fun process. We are building a new medical centre this year and another recording studio in the style of the BBC’s live-lounge the next. Q On a personal level, what are
Q What elements of your industry keep you passionate? A Hurtwood is a sparkling beacon in sixth form education, skilfully leading the way in helping young people to make the transition from school to higher education and beyond. Joining the Hurtwood family has allowed me to develop my skills as a leader and manager, but also to keep my feet (and walking boots) firmly on the ground as a classroom teacher – and in the undulating Surrey Hills. There are not many bosses that would allow me that flexibility and recognise that as professionals we need to be able to share our skills in the channels where we work best. Q How was 2023 as a business year?A 2023 was a great year. The pandemic hit us all hard; it was tough to manage the vagaries of online education, along with supporting students and colleagues through lockdown. 2023 felt like a return to normality, and I’ve seen the students flourish and grow again in the most rewarding ways. Q On a personal level, what are your hopes and dreams for 2024? A I love my job, and I’m very fortunate to work with excellent colleagues in a wonderful, inspiring environment. On a personal level, another adventure in 2024, to an economically and environmentally very different place in the world, will doubtless continue to open my mind and heart to the planet I teach about every day.
your hopes and dreams for 2024?
A On a personal front, I am looking
forward to my daughter Cassa Jackson’s new singles. A singersongwriter who studied at Hurtwood, Cassa has made me so proud as her songs have 15 million streams. I cannot wait to see what 2024 brings for her.

BRICK! Lego brick building clubs can be a game changer for neurodiverse children – helping them develop social skills, make friends and have a whole lot of fun
M
any parents can testify to Lego’s incredible power to engage children in creative play for hours, even days, at a time. But now the tiny brick’s superpower is being put to educational use in a brilliantly constructive way for neurodiverse young people at Brick Club – a place to build, play and learn among likeminded friends. Brick Club is the brainchild of Play Included, a Cambridgeshire-based community interest company and a LEGO Foundation partner. The idea began almost two decades back, when Play Included founder and director Dr Gina Gómez de la Cuesta was starting out her Clinical Psychology PhD at the Autism Research Centre in Cambridge. She heard about a pioneering Lego therapy methodology being devised in the US by Dr Dan LeGoff to support neurodiverse
children and young adults – he’d been in touch with the Autism Research Centre to tell them what he was up to. This tied in with Gina Gómez’ own interests and research specialism and the use of Lego to support play and learning for neurodiverse children became the theme of her doctorate at UEA. Later, she went on to co-author the professional manual LEGO-Based Therapy with, among others, Dr Dan LeGoff. Fast forward to 2018 and she founded Bricks for Autism, now called Play Included. Gómez and her colleagues at Play Included run an innovative programme for health and education professionals. Called Brick-by-Brick, it teaches them how to facilitate Brick Clubs. Everything they learn is evidence based, grounded in the thinking and approaches found in Lego-Based Therapy. “Since the company began, we’ve trained 3,886 professionals – teachers, health professionals, play therapists, psychologists, occupational

therapists and other similar professions – and in 58 countries around the world,” says Gómez. Brick Club has proved to be versatile, scalable and transferable, working across different age groups, needs

“You’ve got a joint focus on a task, so you don’t have to have forced conversation or small talk” and settings (it’s typically recommended for age five up to adulthood). Recently, the team even undertook small-scale pilots in deprived areas of Mexico and Kenya and were pleasantly surprised by the outcomes. “There are some cultural adaptations and differences you’ve got to think about in different settings, but we’ve had really positive outcomes from those small pilots in Mexico and Kenya.” What this programme teaches is a method of play facilitation that removes many of the key issues for neurodiverse children in group settings. Sessions at Brick Club are designed so they are flexible, meeting the needs and interests
of the members. Sometimes children can play different roles (known as Engineer, Builder and Supplier). Or they can opt for ‘freestyle’ building in pairs or small groups. More advanced builders can have a go at stop-motion animation, coding and programming. Whatever the activity (and there are lots), they have the opportunity to take charge and start making decisions together. What underpins Brick Club is, of course, the simple idea of play. This comes easily and naturally to most children, and it’s important for social and emotional development, but we know play is not easy for everyone. But one
of the many clever things about Brick Club is that neurodiverse children often come into their own with Lego bricks. “A lot of the kids already know Lego and they feel like it’s something they are good at,” says Gómez. “Often these kids are used to being told that they’re not very good at this or that and have to have extra help – but here is something that they are good A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

at.” So children who turn up for Brick Club are not faced with what Gómez describes as that same old round of “negative stories”. Rather than being that child in need of extra help, Brick Club is highlighting what they can do. “This comes at it from a positive – it’s building on their strengths and what they like.” While building things together is the fun bit, there’s a broader goal behind it. Brick Club helps children socialise
without those challenging moments inherent in so many other organised and spontaneous activities – the things that raise their anxiety levels. “You don’t have to have that face-to-face communication. You’ve got a joint focus on a task – a physical thing – and you’re all looking at the instructions, so you don’t have to have forced conversation or small talk.” For many children, this is a game changer – and so Brick Club is described as a low social anxiety situation for very good reason. It’s turn up, agree a task and get going. Gina Gomez remains impressed by the sheer skill demonstrated when they do get going. “The visual strengths of these kids are brilliant,” she says. “And for facilitators to be able to say ‘wow, you’re really amazing at this’ is so positive.” Of course, along the way, children are building all sorts of useful life skills – teamwork, sharing, meeting new people, accepting different opinions, not getting upset when things go wrong. Building with bricks also builds strong friendships. “They feel like they belong to the Club, that they’ve got friends who share similar interests. It’s just a natural way to play and work through developing these skills, using a skill they already have,” says Gómez. “Sometimes, Brick Club is the only positive thing that has happened in their week.” For free play resources designed for neurodiverse children you can try at home, visit playincluded.com

he award-winning St Dunstan’s College, Catford, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Chelsea FC Foundation, which will widen access to highquality sporting experiences across Lewisham and south-east London. As part of the partnership, Chelsea FC Foundation will have a full-time officer based at the school to develop the new programme working closely with the St Dunstan’s team and to reach out and build relationships across Lewisham. Speaking about the announcement, St Dunstan’s Head, Nick Hewlett said: ‘We are delighted to announce this new partnership with Chelsea FC Foundation. Sport at St Dunstan’s has been on an incredible journey
in recent years, and this is the next exciting chapter in our history. ‘We are passionate about our local community, and I am particularly pleased that this new partnership will not only benefit our pupils, but young people across the whole borough. It really does have the potential to transform football across south-east London.’ Daniel Jacquart, Head of Football Development at Chelsea FC Foundation, said: ‘‘Chelsea Foundation’s highly qualified and experienced coaching will enable players of all levels to develop and enhance their footballing ability and skills within a first-class environment.’ The partnership will see a calendar of events take place across the year including experiences not just for schools but for the wider community. sporting events, coaching sessions, and supporting state schools with sports days. The Foundation will also deliver coaching for St Dunstan’s pupils Monday to Thursday, and facilitate students visiting the Chelsea FC Training Ground in Cobham. The full-time officer will also work closely with St Dunstan’s to build relationships with local stakeholders to identify further partnership and community opportunities. St Dunstan’s Assistant Head, Co-curricular, Danny Gower, added: ‘Sport plays such a key role in supporting the development of character. Young people learn about themselves, how they respond to challenges and pressure, how they work with team-mates and opponents and about the culture that they perform within. While developing individuals, sport is also uniquely placed to bring communities together.’ St Dunstan’s College in Catford is one of London’s leading independent schools, having been named Senior School of the Year at last year’s Tes Schools Awards. The Chelsea FC Foundation is the world’s leading football social responsibility programme, using the power of football to motivate, educate and inspire. stdunstans.org.uk St Dunstan’s will host a Football Open Morning on 24 April for those interested in joining St Dunstan’s at 11+ and 16+ A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Ensuring 11+ SUCCESS The Director of Studies and Head of Pastoral Care at Kew College Prep discuss the school’s well-rounded approach to supporting 11+ preparation
I
n the competitive landscape of education, the 11+ exam looms as a significant milestone for students and parents alike. While the 11+ exam process is often viewed as a stepping stone to academic success, it carries with it a significant influence on the wellbeing of students. The intricate web of expectation, competition, and preparation can place a unique strain on young minds, raising concerns about the broader impact on their mental health. At Kew College Prep, we have created a nurturing and personalised 11+ programme for our Year 5 and 6 pupils, which is designed to support and guide them through exam preparation and interviews, as well as ensuring they are well prepared for life at senior school. This is led by an experienced team who get to know each pupil and understand their strengths, offering them tailored support and helping them reach their full potential. This not only eases the stress associated with exam preparation but also allows students to develop a genuine love for learning. Alongside a tailored learning programme, each pupil receives pastoral support and is encouraged to understand that they may receive positive or negative news on the back of exams. Staff reassure children that they can speak to a teacher if they want to share their feelings around results. They also encourage them to be mindful of friends who may not have positive news. Our knowledgeable team also work alongside families to help with the selection of the right senior school to suit each child’s talents. The focus on wellbeing and resilience doesn’t just happen in the older years. Conversations around emotions and feelings are encouraged from Nursery and Reception at Kew College Prep, with all classrooms equipped with worry monsters and worry boxes where pupils are encouraged to share their feelings. Children have lessons in PSHE to support their understanding of emotional regulation and are taught mindfulness and grounding techniques. Each classroom is equipped with a calm-kit and children are encouraged to use the Zones or Regulation to help identify how they feel. There is an open dialogue between pupils and staff – laying a firm

“We encourage children to continue with activities that they enjoy. These give children a way to take a break from exam and interview preparation” foundation for mutual respect between staff and pupils and an environment where all pupils are listened to and feel valued. By the time the children reach Years 5 and 6, they are well equipped with the skills and vocabulary to discuss their feelings and concerns. During 11+ exam preparation, some children can find that hobbies or activities fall by the wayside. At Kew College Prep, we encourage children to continue with the sports, music, art or drama activities that they enjoy. These not only help to form wellrounded pupils, but also give children a way to release any stress or anxiety and take a
break from exam and interview preparation. The results of our 11+ programme speak for themselves, with our 2022-2023 Year 6 pupils receiving offers from 28 selective independent and grammar schools and 27 scholarships. Overall, the most important measure of success for us is the happy, accomplished and balanced pupils that leave, well prepared for life at senior school, and we have those in abundance.

PREP TALK Easter revision courses can make a real difference to exam outcomes, say the experts at MPW
F
or many of us, Easter is a time when we throw off the shackles of winter and look forward to warmer weather, holidays, and yes, chocolate. However, for A level and GCSE students, Easter heralds the start of the countdown to exam season. For the former, results determine their university destination; for the latter, which subjects they can go on to study at Sixth Form. This is where Easter revision courses find their niche. They offer those students in need of extra support an invaluable opportunity to get a head start on prep for their exams. Here’s how they can help:
FOCUS AND STRUCTURE The urge to try and learn absolutely every detail about a particular subject can make it difficult to focus on what’s important. An Easter revision course helps students to gain a high-level understanding of core topic areas and identify strengths and weaknesses. This provides a clear focus around which they can build an effective revision strategy.
HONE EX AM TECHNIQUE The after-effects of the pandemic mean that some students still lack experience in sitting formal exams. The main focus of an Easter revision course is on past paper practice which help students to layer up exam experience and reveal gaps in their knowledge. They
“It’s a cliché to say that practice makes perfect, but it undoubtedly breeds confidence” should also receive practical guidance on exam technique, time management and effective answering strategies.
EXPERT GUIDANCE The best Easter revision courses provide access to highly qualified tutors, and examiners with considerable teaching experience. Who better to provide guidance on taking exams than a trained examiner? They’re attuned to the requirements and approaches demanded by the various examining boards.
A MOTIVATING ENVIRONMENT Being part of a dynamic group with a shared purpose can be very motivating. It also helps to keep students focused and committed. Ideally, the best providers limit the number of students per class to single figures, allowing for lots of interaction and individual support from tutors.
BOOST CONFIDENCE What a student gains during an Easter revision course – a high level understanding of their subject, experience of formal timed assessments, an effective revision plan – will instil within them the assuredness to face the summer exams head-on. It’s a cliché to say that practice makes perfect, but it undoubtedly breeds confidence.
A LEADING PROVIDER Mander Portman Woodward (MPW) has been delivering Easter revision courses for over 35 years. W O R K I N G T O G E T H E R Rosemead Preparatory School, set in the heart of Dulwich, looks ahead to an exciting 2024
R
osemead Preparatory School and Nursery, Dulwich, is an independent, co-educational day prep school for children aged 2 and half to 11. The school’s motto ‘Inspiring Brilliant Futures’ is at the forefront of all the school does. Their focus is providing a unique education to every child, nurturing their individual strengths, interests and needs. Head Graeme McCafferty says: ‘At Rosemead, we strive to provide a balanced curriculum that nurtures the holistic development of each child. While academic achievement is important, we firmly believe that education should encompass much more than just exams and grades. ‘Every year, we witness the artistic talents of our children as they win National Art Awards and perform in breathtaking productions. Moreover, our sporting achievements are equally commendable, with several students qualifying and competing at the National
Athletics competition in Birmingham this year.’ Last year, Rosemead merged with the award-winning St Dunstan’s College to create a community of schools consisting of St Dunstan’s Junior School, St Dunstan’s Senior School and Rosemead Preparatory School. McCafferty explains: ‘This is an incredible opportunity for sharing best practice and working collaboratively to make all schools in the community unique, excellent educational establishments. We have a shared vision to provide an ambitious, forwardthinking education and to ensure that we inspire and support each child to thrive as an individual.’ He adds: ‘There are numerous advantages presented by the merger. For children, we can share facilities, resources and learning opportunities. For staff, we can share best practice and work collaboratively through staff training and development.’ Rosemead is also taking the lead in its approach to artificial intelligence (AI), incorporating it into its forward-thinking curriculum. ‘At Rosemead we like to take risks in our learning. We instil this into the children
but also encourage our staff to do the same,’ McCafferty explains. ‘In the early stages of our journey into using AI in the classroom, the question was whether it genuinely enhanced the quality of teaching and learning. Upon exploring Century Tech and AI in the classroom, we determined that the answer was a resounding yes. A year ago, we introduced a comprehensive digital strategy which outlined the transition to a modern and dynamic curriculum, moving towards 1:1 Chromebooks in Years 4, 5 and 6 with iPads being used in Nursery to Year 3. ‘At Rosemead, we value balance and moderation in all aspects of our curriculum, including the use of AI. We recognise the immense potential of personalised learning programs for our students, and the progress they have made throughout the year stands as a testament to our model of embracing technology.’ Find out more about Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery at one of their upcoming open events. rosemeadprep.org.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Urban RETREAT Discover Central London living without the stress at Chimes

ocated in one of London's most sought-after neighbourhoods – vibrant, urban Westminster, Chimes is much more than just bricks and mortar. What distinguishes Chimes are the many luxurious, hotelstyle facilities available to residents. Featuring an indoor courtyard, gym and stretch studio, screening room, residential lounge and an exclusive rooftop terrace overlooking the City of Westminster, residents can make the most of luxury living in central London. Designed by award-winning architects, Chimes offers luxurious homes with a wealth of amenities within a dynamic community. The 39 two and three bedroom apartments feature large picture windows combined with open plan living areas allowing light to flood in. Siham, a 53-year-old from Lebanon,
embarked on a journey to find the perfect London home for her two daughters attending university in the city. It was love at first sight for Siham: “The second I walked in; I had no doubts that it was exactly what I was looking for. The place was incredibly charming, and I felt right at home. In fact, it was the last apartment we saw, moving in shortly after the viewing.” Chimes blends the vibrancy of city life with the tranquillity of residential living. Residents are moments away from London’s iconic landmarks, including the Palace of Westminster and St. James’s Park, and surrounded by the city’s trendiest restaurants and shops. Living at the heart of the city is Siham’s favourite thing about Chimes. “I can walk almost everywhere whether to visit friends or go shopping, with Piccadilly Circus and Regent Street only around the corner.” Chimes is also extremely well-connected which has been great for Siham’s daughters who travel to university every day: “There are three central tube stations right next to Chimes with a bus stop just outside the apartment. It has been easy to come and go as we please.” CHIMES Apartments at Chimes are available to purchase from £1,487,500. Learn more about Chimes chimeswestminster.com or get in touch to arrange a private viewing on 0203 868 2570 or chimes@lifestory.group.
