Weddings, stressful huh?

It's been over a decade since I tied the knot, but I remember every last thing about the day (despite drinking a tad too much).

5

Discoliscious

There were the uncontrollable nerves beforehand, getting to the church two hours early to find one of my wife-to-be's best friends already there, who burst into tears when I said hello. I was two hours early, but my wife-to-be was one hour late (waiting for her hairdresser to arrive), and I remember the looks of pity from all the guests who thought I had been stood up. Next up the best men's speech (I had two) who mercilessly mocked me, before the money behind the bar ran out, and we left and almost ran over one of our closest friends who had collapsed outside the reception. But... saying all that, I loved it.

If you are looking for any wedding inspiration yourself, flick to our special later in the issue –and cliche alert, enjoy the day, it goes by fast!

Big Bash

It’s a quarter of a century since Essex’s Denise Van Outen livened up our breakfasts, and now she has teamed up with Jemma Bolt to keep the party going

Back in the late 1990s, there were two key people in my life: Johnny Vaughan and Denise Van Outen. As hosts of The Big Breakfast, they were principally the reason I rose from my slumber during my university years (something that lectures never quite managed), their easygoing personalities and electric chemistry keeping things together while madcap things happened all around them. It was a genuinely sad time when the partnership was broken up.

Fast forward to 2024, and there’s a new partnership in town and it’s all set to give me yet another jolt. Denise is now in cahoots with actress and broadcaster, Jemma Bolt, with the duo launching the Discoliscious Event Brand in July 2023, where they host the ultimate parties at various venues across the UK.

“It was a few years ago now,” Denise picks up the story of how the two met, “we both live in Essex and it turned out we had a lot in common.

“It started as a bit of a joke when we were starting to take our DJ work more seriously,” Jemma adds about launching a brand together. “We said we should put on a night

together. Fast forward six months and we’ve launched a brand that’s taking us all over the country and Europe already this year.”

What exactly is a Discoliscious event all about? “It is about having a good time,” Denise says simply, “for everyone to express themselves without judgement. Everyone is welcome on our dancefloor.”

“We’ve hosted club nights, brunches in some beautiful venues, we have a couple of daytime parties in Ibiza over the summer and festivals, plus we’re doing our first Roller Discoliscious at Brighton’s i360 in May,” Jemma says about the kind of events they have staged. “We love the music, the people, the atmosphere. The most common thing people say when they’ve been to one of our events is what a lovely crowd we have... we’re very lucky with that.”

The aforementioned Brighton event really showcases what Discoliscious is all about. The duo will host a roller disco on Saturday 25 May at the Upper Deck of the Brighton i360 and this inclusive party will see DJ sets from Denise, Jemma and DJ Zander, as well as live funky saxophone tunes by Jam Saxx.

“We’re so excited to be bringing Discoliscious roller disco to Brighton,” Denise says. “I’ve got family in the city, and I used

to live in Hove, so I know how much fun the locals are. This will also be the first rollerdisco we have hosted so it’s going to be a lot of fun. I can’t wait to get my roller-skates on and hit the decks.” What’s more, the event coincides with Denise’s 50th birthday.

“Well I’ve decided to celebrate throughout the year, so why not?” Denise smiles. “So this will kick o the celebrations nicely.” Discoliscious is the latest in what has been an exciting and diverse career for Denise. As well as her big break in The Big Breakfast, she won plaudits playing Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago, both in the West End and on Broadway, finished as a runner-up in the tenth series of the BBC One dancing show, Strictly Come Dancing, and is currently appearing in the celebrity version of the TV

show, Celebrity Gogglebox. So is anyone is well versed in spinning di erent plates, it’s Denise.

“It’s always a juggle, but I’ve been working from such a young age and I know I’m lucky to love what I do so I make it work,” she says.

Both Jemma and Denise remain and Essex girls through and through. Although her working life takes up plenty of her time, Denise insists that she still makes time to enjoy our county. “I love Mersea Island and taking my dogs for a walk,” she says.

“I also like to meet up with friends in Leigh on Sea, Sheesh in Chigwell is always a good night out and, if the weather isn’t great, Chelmsford ice rink is a fun afternoon.”

There have been recent rumours of a big reunion for Denise and Johnny Vaughan, but for now there is only space for one dynamic duo. “We want as many people to experience our parties as possible,” Jemma says, wrapping up our interview. I, for one, will be tucking in.

LOUGHTON

The town in the heart of the Epping Forest District has plenty going for it

24 ABSOLUTELY magazines

Loughton boasts a rich history dating back centuries. Its story weaves through the tapestry of England’s past, reflecting the evolution of society, economy, and culture in the region.

The origins of Loughton can be traced to Saxon times when it was known as 'Lukintune', meaning the farmstead of a man called Luhha. Its strategic location, nestled within Epping Forest and close to the River Roding, contributed to its early settlement and subsequent growth.

Throughout the medieval period, Loughton remained a small rural settlement, its economy centred around agriculture and forestry. The forest provided a vital source of timber, fuel, and game, sustaining the local population. The establishment of a hunting lodge by the Crown in the 12th century reinforced Loughton’s importance within the royal hunting grounds, attracting nobility and enhancing its prestige.

The Tudor era brought significant changes to Loughton. The dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII led to the Crown seizing vast swathes of land, including parts of Epping Forest. This redistribution of land ownership saw the emergence of large estates, with Loughton

“Loughton's story weaves through the tapestry of England's past, reflecting the evolution of society”

becoming part of the estates held by prominent families like the Wroths and the Conyers. The village prospered under their stewardship, benefiting from investments in infrastructure and amenities.

The 18th and 19th centuries marked a period of transition for Loughton, as it evolved from a rural hamlet into a thriving commuter town. Improved transportation, including the construction of turnpikes and later the arrival of the railway in nearby Loughton Station in 1856, facilitated easier access to London. This spurred residential development, attracting

a uent city dwellers seeking refuge from the urban hustle and bustle. Elegant Georgian and Victorian homes sprung up, transforming the village’s landscape.

The 20th century saw further expansion and modernisation, as Loughton adapted to the changing socioeconomic landscape. Suburbanisation gathered pace, fueled by post-war housing developments and improved transport links. The village continued to attract residents seeking a balance between urban amenities and rural tranquillity.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

Loughton o ers visitors a diverse range of attractions and activities: from historical sites to outdoor adventures, the town and its surrounding areas provide ample opportunities for exploration and enjoyment.

One of Loughton’s most notable landmarks is the historic Loughton Hall, located within the heart of the town. Originally built in the 18th century, this elegant mansion boasts stunning Georgian architecture and beautiful landscaped gardens. It is now a 33-bedroom residential care home for elderly people.

For history enthusiasts, a visit to the nearby Epping Forest District Museum is a must. Housed in a charming Tudor building in nearby Waltham Abbey, the museum showcases the rich heritage and culture of the area. Exhibits cover a wide range of topics, including local history, archaeology, and natural history, providing fascinating insights into the region’s past.

RIDE IT OUT

Carly Glendinning tries indoor cycling phenomenon

SoulCycle, which is now available online

It's a busy Saturday afternoon in London's Soho when I arrive at SoulCycle's Great Marlborough Street studio. Entering through the light, bright shop upstairs, I check in at the reception desk, sign a rider waiver, and pick up a pair of cycling shoes. There's a buzz in the stylish changing room below, but I manage to find a locker, put on some leggings and a tank top and head into the studio. Loved by celebrities and fitness industry pros alike, the New York-founded indoor cycling chain arrived in the capital five years ago and it seems it's as popular as ever. The studio is packed full and being a total newbie, I choose a bike at the back of the class.

Members of the SoulCycle team are on hand to help me clip my shoes in and I'm ready to ride. I'm thankful that the studio is dark, so that I don't feel too self conscious, but as soon as they start pumping out the music, I find myself quickly relaxing into it. Following along is easy, and our enthusiastic instructor keeps the energy of the room up by calling out words of encouragement. The low-impact, high-intensity workout includes tricep dips (where you lean forward onto the bike's handlebars, supporting yourself with your abs), and tap backs (where you stand up out of the saddle and push your hips backwards). I

crank up the resistance for the hill climbs, pedalling furiously (although I'm in charge of the intensity throughout). There's also a weights section using the light hand weights stowed in the bike's holders. It's a full body workout, but my adrenaline is so high (thanks to the music), I don't have any trouble pushing through. "You're a SoulCycle convert now, aren't you?" says my husband as I bound through the door. I roll my eyes, but he's right, I'm hooked already and I can't wait to book in for my next SoulCycle class.

Carpe Diem Beds unveils new releases to continue the narrative of luxury, comfort, and innovation

HÄLLSÖ UPHOLSTERY
HÄLLSÖ WALNUT
“The new Iconic Collection transcends the ordinary, where luxury meets functionality,” says
Helen RK Jensen, VP Brand, Carpe Diem Beds

Asignificant moment for all interior lovers and sleep enthusiasts is here now that Carpe Diem Beds has launched their most extensive collection to date. The unveiling goes beyond the introduction of The Iconic Collection, encapsulating an array of bespoke o erings that redefine the essence of luxury, comfort and innovation. In the pursuit of creating beds that transcend mere functionality, Carpe Diem Beds embodies a philosophy where style and comfort unite. The company has made it their mission to make sleep a priority by transforming bedrooms into the heart of the home. Carpe Diem Beds has long been synonymous with creating havens of tranquillity. Their upcoming release is no exception, as they are committed to making their beds as beautiful to look at as to sleep in. With bespoke craftsmanship, Carpe Diem Beds elevates bedrooms into sanctuaries, providing the perfect place to unwind.

Every bed component is selected for its unique qualities; bed frames are crafted from solid, slowgrowing Nordic pine, and fabrics are meticulously chosen from renowned brands. Each bed, crafted in Sweden, is a masterpiece of exceptional artistry and is signed by the bedmaker.

INTRODUCING THE ICONIC COLLECTION

Imagine the serene and picturesque archipelago on the West Coast of Sweden. With the rhythmic whisper of the waves, the crisp sea breeze, and the wild heather growing among the rocks. This tranquil landscape was the inspiration for Börje Thuleskär, the founder of Carpe Diem Beds. On a balmy summer day wandering the Island of Stora Kornö, Börje spread out his picnic blanket on a meadow of heather to lay down and rest. As he closed his eyes, he experienced a floating sensation and a feeling of weightlessness. Since that day, that weightless feel is found in the comfort of

every bed from Carpe Diem Beds. And now, the floating sensation is a part of the design. The Iconic Collection beds contain the patented Contour Pocket system, providing unparalleled support and that weightless feel deeply rooted in the brand's DNA. Each bed is meticulously crafted, reflecting Carpe Diem Beds' dedication to quality and design.

MEET THE NEW ICONS: KUNGSÖ AND HÄLLSÖ

The Iconic Collection includes four bed models, each named after islands in the archipelago on the West Coast of Sweden. These bespoke beds can be customised from 44 fabrics in the classic and exclusive fabric collection. Kungsö is a continental bed that combines innovation with an elegant and modern design. It is not just furniture; it is a focal point that elevates the entire room's atmosphere. The design is based on the centred leg piece, creating a floating visual e ect that is both striking and captivating, making it a truly exceptional piece of design.

Hällsö Walnut consists of a handcrafted walnut frame, where the natural variations of the wood make each bed unique. The wooden frame's timeless, classic charm elevates the bedroom's design, emphasising the tailored quality of Carpe Diem Beds. The floating style of the centred leg piece further accentuates the walnut frame.

Hällsö Upholstery is a frame bed with an elegant, fabric-padded frame and the innovative floating design that defines this unique range. The frame seamlessly complements modern interior styles. Vindö adjustable bed is the existing and most exclusive bed in The Iconic Collection. Vindö o ers a luxurious, floating design synonymous with the rest of the collection. This adjustable bed allows you to control your body's position and indulge in relaxing massages, making it a one-of-a-kind experience. With the added convenience of a light feature, Vindö is the epitome of luxury and comfort, setting a new standard for adjustable beds.

ELEVATING THE EXPERIENCE WITH NEW FABRICS

Carpe Diem Beds is set to launch new fabrics as well as the brand's first collaboration with Danish textile brand Kvadrat. The new fabrics are inspired by the calming colours found in Lysekil's archipelago and will feature 22 exclusive designs. Altogether, Carpe Diem Beds now o ers 44 bespoke fabrics from Designers Guild, Romo Group, and Kvadrat, enabling customers to personalise their beds further. The new additions elevate Carpe Diem Beds' existing fabric brand mix and allow the brand to cater to a broader design audience who are looking for that Scandinavian feel.

CARPE DIEM BEDS REDEFINES LUXURY

With The Iconic Collection, Carpe Diem Beds invites you to embrace a floating sensation that transports you to the tranquil shores of the west coast of Sweden. Envision the serenity, feel the calm, and let every night become an unwinding retreat. This collection is more than just beds; it's a masterpiece that invites you to seize the day, starting with a night of unparalleled sleep. carpediembeds.co.uk

That warm FEELING

Embracing the Danish art of getting cosy

Whether your idea of cosy is a mulled wine, a thick jumper or a crackling fire, we now look to the Danish art of hygge when it gets cold outside. The long dark winters in Northern Europe require a special e ort to keep the cold out, which is why it’s no coincidence that the art of heating a home is led by the Scandinavians, and in particular the Danes.

The cutting edge of woodburning technology has been driven forward by Scandinavian manufacturers. Because their long winters demand a reliable and clean

source of heat, their stove industry produces the best woodburners on the market.

Generations of engineers have refined the process for burning wood, through research and constant improvement at companies like Heta in Lemvig. Orion Heating in Essex have worked closely with Heta as the local authorised dealer for over 20 years.

At their family run showroom in Takeley, Orion Heating supply woodburners and fireplaces from Britain, Denmark and across Europe. The requirements of home owners in Essex are the same now as they were in 1977 when the company began selling stoves. Customers demand an attractive and easy to use heat source at home, and nothing makes you feel more cosy than a real fire. Radiators and underfloor heating do not

come close to the appeal of a woodburning stove for additional heat at home.

Home improvements, extensions and building work pick up pace as we move from spring into summer. A Scandinavian woodburner will make the perfect addition in a kitchen diner or extension. As improvements change the layout of our homes, corner spaces and pillars are the ideal location for a free-standing modern stove. Plus the additional heat requirements, as rooms grow in size, can be met with a modest size woodburner. Orion Heating in Takeley o er both a showroom to see the products, and the technical knowledge required for fitting them.

The model shown on this page operates so cleanly and e ciently, that test figures are far below the current EcoDesign standard required of all stoves on sale.

Contact Orion Heating for advice on picking the best performing models, and sizing a stove to suit your home improvements.

Hear them

ROAR

Essex's YARDART UK has impressed all with their outdoor art range. But what about the Dragons themselves?

Founders Charlotte Clemence and Bex Lund explain all

66 ABSOLUTELY magazines

Q We featured you back in 2022 – how have the last couple of years been for you?

CHARLOTTE: They’ve been great. We have had so many opportunities arise in the last few years from artist collaborations to working with galleries and hospitality, providing pieces for their outdoor spaces. Our most exciting collaboration is with a local business, Murwalls, we’ve worked together to launch ‘Mr. Monopoly’ – it’s a limited-edition piece which is in association with Hasbro, the company behind the beloved and iconic board game.

Q To remind our readers, what do you create and what makes you di erent?

CHARLOTTE: We create works of art which you can display outdoors. At YARDART UK we passionately believe that gardens are not just spaces, but canvases waiting to be enhanced with creativity, lasting colour and innovation. All our art is digitally printed ensuring they are completely waterproof,

UV resistant, windproof, fade proof and durable making them perfect for the garden. They are also easy to install – they can be mounted to fences, concrete and brick walls. What makes us di erent is our maximalist approach, we work with various artists from across the UK to provide a wide choice of styles, and by adding a printed 3D e ect frame we really make our artwork POP!

Q Big news for 2024 is your appearance on Dragon’s Den. How did that come about?

BEX: Charlotte’s husband, Grant, was convinced we would be a great candidate for the show, and it was him, in the end, that sent in the application, obviously thinking we would never hear anything. But six months later we got the phone call! The initial call was a brief one, but we hadn’t appreciated the work that was to come: months of data gathering and delving into every aspect of the business – something really we hadn’t done before so it was an interesting exercise,

and we learnt a lot. We were convinced through this entire process it would never mount to anything, but we kept passing through from round to round. The last piece was a pitch audition, which Charlotte’s daughters – Sophia and Nancy – filmed.

CHARLOTTE: Even though this was done in our own outdoor gallery and taken on a phone camera, it suddenly started to feel a bit more real – the last stage we had to pass. I did it with my husband Grant (who is part of the YARDART UK team and who was desperate to do the show), so Bex was happy to let him take her spot should we make it to filming. A very wise decision on her part! But we got through and then just had to wait, wait and wait some more until we received our filming date in Manchester in June last year.

Q How would you describe the experience?

CHARLOTTE: It was one of the most nerve-racking things I have ever done, and

"DRAGON'S DEN WAS ONE OF THE MOST NERVEWRACKING THINGS I HAVE EVER DONE"

I can't tell you how nervous I was. I had absolutely zero sleep for the week leading up to it, and the hotel the night before was so hot. Grant slept like a baby though. For a month before I would walk round with figures written on my hands and arms and get my friends to randomly fire questions at me. I’m not a great public speaker so this was playing havoc with my status quo.

On the day you have to go in and set up and then do a pretend pitch to the filming crew, so they know what to do with the lighting etc – that was bad enough. I definitely hit my step count on the day, as once you’ve finished your set up and have your make-up done, you have time to kill – nervous anxiety hits.

When it’s finally your turn, the doors open and suddenly, you are there, in front of them all – Touker Suleyman, Sara Davies, Deborah Meaden, Steven Bartlett and Peter Jones – and you think OMG this is very surreal! It then suddenly occurred to me that the six months of lead up was all down to this, a few minutes' pitch. In reality we ended up in the den for two hours.

The Dragons grilled Grant and myself a lot. My advice to anyone contemplating doing the show is to tread carefully, as ultimately anything can make it to TV, and

you get that feeling they want to take you down a rabbit hole you can’t return from.

I was nervous, people can probably tell that having watched the show, and a little emotional at one point, but I kept reminding myself that this is natural, especially talking about my family’s journey regarding the loss of a child –luckily Sara Davies talked me back.

Looking at episodes now from the rest of the series, I can now see that we presented ourselves well and had a pretty good run of it. The Dragons can be brutal, obviously it is their own money they are investing, but I think we came out relatively unscathed.

The result for us? Sara Davies said she was in from the very beginning, she just loved the concept and the brand and had so many ideas for us. She wrote a business plan while we were in the den and suggested Steven come in with her and do the social side. So there we had it, two o ers from the actual Dragons we went in to target for investment! Although I have to say, after years of thinking Deborah was a hard person, she was to me incredibly lovely, honest and fair. I came out with a totally di erent perception of her.

We met Sara and Steve after. Sara was particularly excited and told us

Q Tell us about Burnt Peach…

BEX: Pia Gill, from Burnt Peach Design, is a wonderful artist we came across on Insta. We’ve been following her for some time and just loved the freshness of her work. One of her pieces was seen at the Chelsea Flower Show a few years ago and was an instant hit, so we’ve joined forces. It is very di erent from what we’ve focussed on previously, and the introduction of typography into our range has been really well received – everyone loves it and the

clean, modern approach it presents. As Pia herself says, ‘Everything looks better with a splash of bold type. Each piece echoes a lifelong passion for turning words into art’.

Q Do you have a personal favourite artwork right now?

CHARLOTTE: Aside from Pia’s work, mine would have to be the Street Art we mentioned before, our collaboration with Murwalls – ‘Mr. Monopoly’ in association with Hasbro. I think it’s because it is such a recognisable character and the artwork gives you that nostalgia and excitement of family game nights, when we all had dreams of becoming property moguls!

Rich Uncle Pennybags, with his distinctive top hat, has been the face of Monopoly since 1936, so he’s aged really well.

BEX: I love a piece from our modern collection, ‘Reimagined’ by Sue Welfare. It’s another limited edition to us. Sue’s art style centres around pointillism –drawing with dots – it’s really incredibly detailed and so e ective. It was one of the pieces that was taken on the pitch to Dragons' Den as it has a real wow factor. It’s one of our higher end pieces, but has consistently been one of our top sellers.

Q What inspires the creation of a new design?

CHARLOTTE: Gosh, lots of things. Colour trends, artists, garden trends… We are always looking to bring the indoors out, so a lot of inspiration comes from what is trending within the home and interior sector – colours, patterns etc. Including the latest movies, Barbie for example, which Sue Welfare took as her inspiration for another piece, or other trending films that have a strong genre like The Great Gatsby. We could go on as there is so much out there that is inspiring.

Q What are your hopes for the next couple of years for YARDART UK?

CHARLOTTE: We’ve now filed our brand internationally, so our next step is Europe, UAE and USA. But let’s see, the one thing we are confident on is the world is our oyster.

BEST START IN LIFE

Lisa McDonald, Head of Woodford Green Preparatory School, on teaching, wellbeing and motivation

Known locally as the Red School because of the scarlet uniforms, Woodford Green Preparatory School was founded in 1932 to provide a non-denominational Christian education for boys and girls, a tradition that has been maintained throughout their history. They are a diverse community, inclusive of all faiths and none.

Their values and ethos really strike at the heart of what a Woodford Green Preparatory School education is all about. They ensure each child is provided with care and nurture, so that they can demonstrate kindness, honesty and good manners to others. They encourage curiosity in the children’s learning, seeking ways to explore their ideas. They promote creativity and imaginative thinking, for children to eagerly welcome new challenges. They foster a sense of pride and

excellence in all areas of school life, with a commitment to always giving their best and celebrating each other’s successes.

The Woodford Green Preparatory School values are the key elements that they place particular emphasis on. They are formed with input from the pupils, parents, sta and governors, and they are written in such a way that they are accessible to all of their pupils.

To find out more about the school, Absolutely sat down with Headmistress, Lisa McDonald, to find out more about her career and vision for the school.

Q What is your background in education?

A I actually began working life as a lawyer, but made the move into education fairly swiftly after starting my career. Prior to working at Woodford Green, I was Head of Edge Grove School in Hertfordshire, which at the time of my appointment was a co-educational day and boarding school of about 5oo pupils. Prior to

76 ABSOLUTELY magazines
LISA MCDONALD WITH SOME OF HER PUPILS

that, I was Deputy Head at the British International School in New York.

Q Why did you want to work in education?

A Since I can remember, I always had a natural inclination towards teaching. I remember my school days with great fondness and have been inspired by the lasting impact that some of my teachers had on me. Whilst being a teacher carries a huge responsibility, I am a passionate believer that an inspiring education can really transform the lives of young people. Being a Head enables me to have a slightly greater sphere of influence on the whole school community.

Q How would you describe your approach to education?

A Many people will be familiar with the well-known adage, "Culture eats strategy for breakfast". It’s my firm belief that fostering a positive and inclusive school culture is fundamental to the success

of the entire community. At WGPS the strong culture of mutual trust and respect that exists enables pupils to thrive academically and ensures that sta feel motivated and inspired to make every day at school extraordinary for the pupils and themselves.

Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024?

A This academic year we have started planning for the introduction of a character education curriculum and pupil learner profile that will underpin the academic life of the school. WGPS is academically ambitious for all its pupils and we achieve great results. However, a prerequisite for academic success is undoubtedly a real commitment to the personal development of our pupils through teaching them values, habits, and ultimately character attributes that will help them to be successful as they navigate the challenges and opportunities of the future.

I am passionate about wellbeing, not only of the sta and children in my school, but in the broader sphere of education where the challenges of headship (particularly sometimes a female leader) are becoming increasingly complex. This year, I hope to be able to contribute more broadly to the wellbeing agenda in the sector as a whole and it would be a real privilege to extend my sphere of influence in this area beyond the school walls.

How to choose the right Early Years setting for your child

When choosing the right Early Years setting for your child, it’s important to see what makes each place special. Although many nurseries and schools o er similar services, the best ones have unique features that stand out. The Oak-Tree Group of Schools is a prime example of excellence, with its engaging curriculum that supports all areas of a child’s growth.

EXPLORING THE OAK-TREE EARLY YEARS

The Oak-Tree Early Years Foundation Stages include Lower Kindergarten, Upper Kindergarten and Reception. The schools’ settings are both fun and safe, making them perfect places for children to grow and encouraging them to be curious, play and learn cooperation and respect.

site, include libraries, computer suites, studios, extensive outside areas and banks of iPads.

CLASS SIZES

CURRICULUM AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

At the Oak-Tree Schools, children as young as two and a half are immersed in settings that encourage creativity and independence. Challenging activities are designed to build their social, communication and emotional skills through play and structured learning. The Lower and Upper Kindergarten classes focus on early literacy and numeracy, including specialist subjects such as languages, art and PE. The schools also o er after school clubs and curriculum workshops that add more depth to the children’s learning experience.

PREMISES AND FACILITIES

The Oak-Tree Schools use their surroundings in their grounds and locality to extend the learning beyond the classroom. This includes trips to Epping Forest, local fire stations, farms and nature parks as well as use of the well-equipped outdoor areas designed specifically for young children. Children have access to resources that, depending on the

The Oak-Tree philosophy is to keep class sizes smaller than the norm, which means that teachers, teaching assistants and other support sta give more focussed attention to each child. This helps to better understand and support each child’s learning needs, which they regularly discuss with parents as part of the ongoing formal and informal feedback.

COMMUNITY

Starting at an Oak-Tree Kindergarten makes it easier for children to move up to Reception, Year 1 and beyond with the same group. There are no extra tests for moving up, which makes the transition smoother and lets children stay with their friends in a familiar setting. This consistency is important for the kids' sense of community and confidence, and often leads to a closer relationship between pupils and the school.

Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill, Coopersale Hall School in Epping, Normanhurst School in North Chingford, and Oaklands School in Loughton make up the privately owned Oak-Tree Group of Schools.

James Hunt looks at the key factors to consider when buying or selling in an ever-evolving property market

With spring well under way it’s worth noting there has been positive activity since the start of the year with Rightmove reporting not only that prices of properties coming to market have increased by 1.5% on average nationally, but also March saw the biggest month-on-month house price rise in ten months. A far cry from the housing market ‘crash’ that last year was reported by many to be imminent.

Additionally, Zoopla suggests the start of 2024 has seen a promising increase in buyer demand, with figures showing a 12% rise compared to 12 months ago. This could be attributed to the re-appearance of sub-5% mortgage rates, subsequently improving buyer a ordability. Similarly, there has been a 15% increase in new properties appearing on the market for sale since last year o ering more options to those looking to move (Rightmove).

Now, it’s important to note that although the overall number of agreed sales has continued to remain high in early 2024 (Zoopla), indicating that buyers and sellers are becoming more aligned when it comes to pricing properties, homes can take a

little longer to sell as buyers take their time to find a home that’s right for them (Rightmove), particularly whilst considering the ample properties available to them.

If you’re looking to sell it is a good time to feel optimistic about the market, but it’s wise to remain considerate of buyer’s a ordability and pricing sensitivity.

Remember, an experienced estate agent, like myself and my team at Durden & Hunt, can help you navigate stabilising property prices, improved buyer demand, and increased market activity by using knowledge and expertise to help you understand the market’s current conditions and an accurate valuation of your home.

THE BIG QUIZ

The annual Haslers Foundation Charity Quiz returned in March, raising vital funds for those in need

90 ABSOLUTELY magazines
THE EVENT RAISED MORE VITAL FUNDS

On 21 March business brains from across the South East once again competed against each other in the tenth annual Haslers Foundation Charity Quiz. Held at West Essex Golf Club, Chingford, the event saw over 100 people turn out to raise money for the Haslers Foundation – the in-house charity of Loughton-based Haslers Chartered Accountants.

The Haslers Foundation was established by Haslers Chartered Accountants in 2013, with the aim of supporting great local causes across Essex and East London. To date, the charity has raised almost £250,000 to support local and national good causes.

With such a significant milestone achieved and with a considerable amount of money raised in its history, the Haslers Foundation wants to continue its good work and help many more people.

Over the past 11 years, The Foundation has organised and taken part in some amazing fundraising activities to raise money for their cause, including a team from Haslers Accountants taking part in a gruelling 12km obstacle course. Fifteen of the Haslers team will participate in the Brentwood Nuclear races next month to raise money for the Foundation with other fundraising events in the calendar.

Haslers’ team are also encouraged to participate in volunteering days within the local community. If you are a local charity in need of assistance do please contact them.

“The money raised at this event makes a massive di erence to local causes”

Their charity’s key objectives are to:

•Prevent or relieve poverty and financial hardship by providing grants and services to people in need or to charities or other organisations involved in this type of work;

•Support people who are ill or have long term medical conditions and initiatives to preserve good health;

•Supporting recreation, leisure, education and other activities to help young people participate in society as mature, responsible individuals.

The annual quiz night is a chance to bring together Haslers team members, their suppliers, clients and charity partners to test their knowledge, raise money and ultimately have a lot of fun.

This year, a joint team of Barclays and Haslers team members were the champions of the night and the quiz, which included a dinner and ra e. Thanks to the generosity of all involved, the event raised over £7,000. Sponsors of the event included Dermal Laboratories, Hightower Wealth Management, Aquabridge Law, Barclays, MCA Trust, Utilize, SRM Wealth Management, Pexhurst Ltd, The Rotary Club of Epping and Higgins PLC.

The incredible ra e prizes were donated by Ross-Field Jewellers, Oak Tree Schools,

The Loughton Florist, Woodford Heating, MCA Trust, The Epping Forest Candle Co, Site Sales and Consort Insurance. The ra e table was overflowing with prizes!

A special thank you to those who attended from the following charities: Frank Charles Give a Gift, 3 Food 4 U, St Clare Hospice, The Dream Factory, Accuro, Haven House Hospice and MCA Trust.

Jon O'Shea, Chairman of Haslers Accountants and its Foundation, says: “Yet another fantastic turnout again this year and we are astonished at how much this event helped us to raise for Haslers Foundation.

“None of this would have been possible without the support of the businesses that sponsored the event and took part, so a huge thanks must go to them. The money raised at this event makes a massive di erence to local causes.”

Former CEO and Senior Partner Tony Fisher now takes on the role of Chair, where his sizeable experience

and strategic insight will continue to guide the firm’s direction and reinforce its standing in the legal sector.

Haven House CHILDREN’S HOSPICE

A spectacular event raises a whopping £200,000 for the Essex-based charity

Mthan 300 guests attended the Haven House Ball at the London Marriott Grosvenor Square on Wednesday 6 March. The evening boasted a sparkling drinks reception, three-course dinner, ra e, auctions and sensational entertainment.

The fundraising evening was hosted by Haven House ambassador and celebrity Mark Wright and guests were treated to live entertainment from the incredible The Function Band. During an extremely poignant moment of the evening guests were shown Haven House’s new film, which features the story of parents Adam and Naomi Tuckwell and their beautiful daughter, Orla.

Orla was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour in September 2022. Over six months, she underwent intense treatment and in April 2023, she rang the end-of-treatment bell. Heartbreakingly, a few months later, the cancer returned, and Orla’s treatment moved to palliative care. She sadly passed away at Haven House in August 2023 aged just two. Both Adam and Noami were present at the ball and received a standing ovation from the teary-eyed audience.

Speaking on the night, Mark said: “I’ve supported Haven House for a long time and it’s a privilege to be part of this family. Haven House is there from the time a diagnosis is made to support families every step of the way ensuring they can make the most of the precious time they have together. Each year it

costs around £6 million to run Haven House and the hospice would not exist without the local community. Tonight, we come together in honour of the children and young people who inspire us each day and to celebrate the amazing work of the team, while raising funds for families who need our support.”

Sponsors for the evening included: The Chigwell Group, Orbian, CJC, The Media People and the fantastic Function Band. Haven House provides specialist care and support to more than 400 seriously ill children and their families from West Essex, East Hertfordshire and North East London.
