Editor’s LETTER
A
ugust is the best month in London. Everyone might not agree, but for me the lack of traffic, the lack of people on pavements and the noticably slower pace of life creates a holiday vibe right here at home. Also, August is by extension just slightly anarchic. Our magazine is featuring a variety of different things this month, maybe not anarchic but certainly a touch random. We have Notting Hill resident Cerys Matthews discussing not life in W11 but the Good Life in Wales in the form of her very own festival. Of course there will be music there, but there will also be more unusual things such as axethrowing classes and other very unwest London type activities. Another city girl with a thing for the country is Pearl Lowe, known for her Primrose Hill days but currently converted to life in Somerset. She tells us about rural bliss as well as her latest venture, sequinned capes for children. Also in these pages we celebrate all the things that make life in this part of town so special – events, exhibitions, eating, drinking and shopping. We hope you enjoy the issue. ◆

A GOOD
LIFE Cerys Matthews tells us about The Good Life Experience and why we should be going back to basics and enjoying the natural world I n t e r v i e w H E L E N B R OW N

hat do The Great British Bake Off, Bear Grylls and ITV’s The Cube have in common? Not much, except if you mashed them all together the outcome would be not unlike The Good Life Experience. This is how Cerys Matthew, singer, presenter, radio host and festival co-owner describes this four-year-old passion project of hers. Billed as a voyage of discovery, The Good Life Experience channels halcyon days of rural bliss. “I wanted a festival that was concentrated around people, experiences and making memories,” Cerys explains. A relative newcomer to the festival offering in Wales, the annual event based in Hawarden promises a unique experience for the whole family. Just like Cerys’ BBC Radio 6 Music programme, the line-up is wonderfully eclectic. She’s hand-picked the performers, having

either featured them on her radio show, stumbled across them playing live or encountered them via her work with BBC’s The One Show. “We’ve got literature, music and the usual festival line-up, along with a huge dollop of the natural world and the great outdoors,” Cerys tells us. Here you can run down hills, climb trees and make yourself dizzy at the free fairground. There are worlds of gin making, beer craft and chocolate creation to be discovered, along with axe-making, rabbit-skinning, bushcraft, meditation, foraging, archery, stonemasonry, ceramics, candle-making; and that’s not even the half of it. On the roster of cultural offerings this year are BBC Wildlife presenter Kate Humble, songwriter Michael Head, author Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Thomasina Miers of Masterchef and Wahaca fame and childhood hero of Cerys’, Roger Phillips, who will take you foraging in the woods before cooking up your finds. Knight will also be making an appearance to talk about her love of dogs, along with the sharp-minded children's book author and poet, Michael Rosen. For Cerys, the festival epitomises an outdoorsy, crafty spirit that many people yearn for in an age where much of life happens digitally. It’s not only for practical sorts who can build fires and climb trees but also for those who dabble in wanting to live a more active, natural life. “I wanted to put a date in the diary where no matter what your age you could enjoy getting away from the modern

world and meet like-minded people,” says Cerys. “I’m really lucky to be able to meet lots of fascinating people with my work on The One Show - people like Michael Morpurgo and Quentin Blake. They’re totally inspiring,” she continues, “I thought, why can’t I start a festival where I can invite anyone I want to - hopefully they’ll say yes - and then other people can come and be inspired by them too?” It’s the perfect opportunity to discover new things. “That’s why we called it the Good Life Experience,”

ARTS & CULTURE / INTERVIEW
Cerys tells us. “If you want to, you can be part of it.” Her musings lead her to point out that there is a huge chunk of the population - like herself - who have no interest in Jimmy Choo, who aren’t fazed by the latest trends and who care little about what the marketing man has to say. “I’m more interested in tiny emerging brands and boutique makers and producers, or maverick musicians,” she say, “They’re not just there for commercial gain, they’re there because they’re bonkers. Or brilliant.” Commercialism - or lack of - is a point on which the entire concept of The Good
Life Experience is axised. With a husband and five children in tow, festival-going was an expensive affair for Cerys. There is no VIP area and the four founders have done everything possible to ensure that it is as cheap as they can make it. “We’re really not just looking at you as a punter - to put money in the till - the whole thing is about people,” Cerys maintains. “One of the main driving forces for starting the festival was to make it not only as cheap as we can, but easy for families to come and let the children off the leash.” They’ll spend time away from the virtual world, they’re taught how to handle sharp knives properly, to play with fire, they’ll abseil from trees and throw axes. “All the sort of hands-on, wild country stuff that my memories are full of from childhood,” Cerys tells us. For her, the highlight is seeing her 13 year-old daughter with mud on her skirt having the time of her life, or the faces of the children after they’ve successfully lit a fire using a flint and dry chippings. “There is immense pressure on girls these days to look right, to constantly put on makeup, to pluck their eyebrows; there’s all this pressure because that’s the norm today, so it’s such a delight for me to just say ‘forget all that for a moment,’ come and be filthy dirty, and be active and use your body - just be a kid - let the children be children, let them go wild in the country. That’s why I do it. I do it for my daughter, the Snapchat generation,”
They’re not there for COMMERCIAL GAIN, they’re there BECAUSE THEY’RE BONKERS . Or brilliant.
she says. It’s back to basics, straw-in-your-hair, rosy-cheeked, good-old-fashioned fun. It sounds obvious, but it’s not. For many of us, we’re too busy, we’ve got too much pressure to earn money, to keep our lives going. The Good Life Experience is the antidote to days on end spent staring at a screen. A place where you and your kids can get back to nature; being physical, trying new things and rediscovering the real fun that exists beyond the pixels of the iPhone. Bored kids do not make for good festival companions and this festival positively embraces a child-like wonder and sense of being unafraid to jump in, grab the bull by the horns and try something completely out of the ordinary. So even if you’ve never learned how to tie a rope, make a s'more or throw an axe, now is the time to embark on that voyage of discovery. ◆ THE GOOD LIFE EXPERIENCE 15 - 17 September Hoarding Estate Farm Shop, Flintshire, CH5 3FB thegoodlifeexperience.co.uk

hen it-girl Poppy Delevingne was papped wearing an intricately embroidered Aztec print cape, the fashion world sat up. The designer, it transpired, was the relatively unknown Nadya Shah. Covering dresses, tops, coats and capes, Nadya Shah’s designs are characterised by a contemporary spin on folkloric embroidery. Sourcing ethical, handwoven fabrics from her native Pakistan, the designer is passionate about championing sustainable fashion. Her label provides long term employment opportunities for artisans in her hometown. “From architecture to flocked wallpaper, old Cecil Beaton books to vintage ornaments, I’m constantly inspired by the old and the new”, Shah explains. “Although my creative process has evolved over the years, I’ve always worked very visually. Starting with sketching ideas and creating mood boards, my research has developed onto the treatment of materials and constructions of silhouettes. I love experimenting with techniques and embroidery, constantly challenging myself and pushing the boundaries of what can be done.” Spotted on a number of famous faces, Shah’s designs act as a pièce de résistance to any ensemble. Make like Poppy and pair the Dhalia Cape with dressed-down denim and a billowing blouse for festival-ready style. Or, for a cool alternative to a summer cocktail dress, try the Lina Fuchsia Nomad Jacket. The chinoiserie embellishment gives a nod to this season’s oriental trend - all it needs is an crisp shirt, culottes and heeled sandals. ◆ nadyashah.com

f, like me, you’ve not yet developed a proper skincare routine for yourself, then a treatment with highly acclaimed skincare therapist Nataliya Robinson is a great place to start. Working in her appointment-only clinic in Chelsea, she treats everything from spots to scarring, delivering results that make beauty editors and celebrities turn to her time and again. Having suffered from acne herself, Nataliya knows only too well that having less-than-perfect skin has a huge impact on your life. In a quest to tackle it and achieve a healthy complexion, she qualified as a beauty therapist and now combines modern, scientific knowledge with traditional Chinese medicine in her specialised approach to skin. Nataliya looks at internal as well as external factors affecting your skin’s health. Before treating you, she conducts a four-pronged consultation which focuses on lifestyle, diet and environment to create a tailored, results-driven treatment plan. For me this involves de-gunking my pores (strangely satisfying), treating signs of acne scarring and plenty of practical tips to implement at home. Some are easier than others. Drinking dandelion tea, eating more protein and taking a B-complex each morning are fairly straightforward. Giving up milk and yoghurt I find harder, but in the interests of flawless skin, it’s a sacrifice I’m more than willing to make. ◆ N ATA L I YA R O B I N S O N

WHAT’S THE BEST BRAZILIAN BLOWDRY TO FIGHT SUMMER FRIZZ?
Dior, Armani and Preen. From halo and French, to loose and side, the trick to remember is to keep your plaits clean and relaxed, as stylist for Dior, Guido Palau says, ‘it should always be about femininity and simplicity.’
As you would expect from a Brazilian beauty export, a smoothing keratin treatment for puff-prone locks comes into its own when the humidity heats up. But as with most science-backed treatments, it pays to shop around in order to separate the good from the bad and the ugly frizz-fighting blowdries. Hari’s stylist Rebecca Wakeman warns: ‘Always look for formaldehyde-free versions, decide between express treatments which lasts up to

CAN GROWN-UPS WEAR BRAIDS? If Sienna Miller, Amber Heard and Kate Bosworth have the kind of hair dos that you lust after (us too) then it could be time to roll out the plaits. But if the last time you wore braids was at school, it could be a time to point out that they aren’t just for teenagers, as illustrated on the very grown-up catwalks at

FOOD & DRINK / REVIEW
AS SOON AS WE started eating WE FELL SILENT, save only for occasional ‘OOHS’ and ‘AAHS’
Elystan Street With a celebrated chef and countless award wins, Elystan’s star is firmly on the ascent Wo r d s H a n n a h H o p k i n s
D
espite London’s innumerable restaurants, it’s still hard to find a place to eat where every single dish hits the spot. Enter Elystan Street. Since opening in September last year, it’s become a favourite of local denizens and far-flung foodies, who return time and again for the plate-lickable cooking. Co-owners chef Phil Howard and restaurateur Rebecca Mascaren have created a modern space with a European menu that perfectly balances exceptional food with a relaxed atmosphere. Having spent the last 25 years as chef-patron of The Square in Mayfair, Howard was keen
to eschew the stiff atmosphere and white tablecloths of many high-end restaurants and create a place where service is knowledgeable but approachable and the food is flawless. It seems to be working... this April he was awarded GQ Magazine’s ‘Best Chef’ award and Elystan Street is full-up on the regular. Now the duo’s plan is to launch casual lunches, served in the restaurant’s private dining room and catering to locals, shoppers and businesstypes who want to drop-in for a quick bite. Go in the evening though, and you’ll want to settle in for hours. The light-filled space of the main dining room is home to super-comfy teal leather banquettes and chairs in candy-coloured shades of salmon and baby blue. Howard brought
59 NH_Aug17_FOOD REVIEW.indd 59
25-year-old Toby Burrowes from The Square and made him Elystan’s head chef, where he and the team transform humble ingredients into something ethereal. A starter of cool almond soup with grapes, garlic, melon, cucumber and olive oil is a revelation, even for those you think they don’t like cold soup (trust us, you will be swayed). Cool and refreshing, with sweet and spicy notes, as soon as we started eating we fell silent, save only for occasional ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’. We are treated to hand cut squid ink bucatini with sardine vinaigrette, orange zest and toasted crumbs. Its unusual combination of saltiness and freshness from the orange meant it was inhaled. A main of roast cod with a purée of peas, crushed potatoes, lardo di colonnata and roasting juices was succulent, salty and rich, with welcome sweet notes of pea. To finish off we had the berry pavlova, but it was the white peach with lemon verbena and almonds that stole the show. Beautiful to look at and to eat, it’s a serious contender for ‘best of the year’...a sentiment that extends to Elystan Street itself. ◆ E LYSTA N ST R E E T 43 Elystan Street, Chelsea, SW3; 020 7628 5005 elystanstreet.com

BUON APPETITO Enoteca Turi authentic Italian dishes keep locals coming back for more
W
ith 27 years of culinary heritage in Putney, Enoteca Turi has moved to Belgravia, bringing its exceptional regional Italian food and phenomenal wine list with it. Through this move, they have grown from a neighbourhood restaurant and local favourite into a fine dining establishment offering contemporary cuisine. Spearheading this transformation is a promising young chef Francesco Sodano, who received his training in some of the toughest Michelin-starred kitchens in Italy with 2* Michelin chefs Oliver Glowig and Anthony Genovese as well as in renowned London restaurants, such as Galvin at Windows and Annabelle's Club. The cuisine fuses elegant fine dining with classic Italian recipes. The result is a unique re-interpretation of the taste and flavours of the Italian regions. The summer menu gathers inspiration from regions such as Liguria where there is a tradition of stuffing vegetables. At

Inspired by the Italian Baroque style, every single Villari figure is finished in the finest detail using paint based on special oils extracted from fir trees and lavender. LALIQUE
Lalique's new Muses collection comprises glass vases paying tribute to the female form, a major source of inspiration of the house since its origins. The female was both the object and the subject of René Lalique’s masterpieces. He used the female form as a means of beautification, following the example of the Renaissance artists. He often depicted women as an allegory, gracious and ethereal or voluptuous with an arresting sensuality and mysterious demeanour.
MOSER
Luxury Bohemian crystal glass company Moser recently celebrated 160 years since its founding. To celebrate, contemporary master glassmakers joined forces with glass artists to create an anniversary collection, showing the most beautiful and stylish examples of the company's work, revived by contemporary masters. The new collection uses methods that have been used for more than 100 years.

ynonymous with high octane, glossy glamour, Roberto Cavalli is the king of exotic prints and bohemian silhouettes. The brand has maintained a distinct character throughout its 40 year history and maximalism is the order of the day. Roberto Cavalli home offers all the high impact decadence of the fashion line. Drawing on different fabrics set off by a single bold print, dye or effect, this is not a look for the faint-hearted. ‘When I create a dress I want it to emphasise the femininity of a woman; and so as with designing for the home,’ Cavalli explains. The brand’s signature animal print pervades Cavalli homes’ Signature Line, alongside flashes of molten gold, while the wallpaper and linen look to the ornate frivolity of rococo style. After a short homeware run in the early noughties, the brand took a second shot at the market in 2012 with the help of Irish designer Lorraine Brennan. Founded in 1992, this eclectic fashion and design company gained prestige as a result of its first womenswear collection in the mid 90s and has continued to produce their own line ever since. Following the success of its clothing line, Kishimoto developed a variety of innovative design products, all identified by their timeless geometric prints. The brand is now known for its ability to decorate anything and everything. ‘The world has many surfaces and we as surface decorators are happy to cover these with our aesthetic’ is the manifesto the brand stands by. Its interiors line offers mid century modernity, intersected with tessellating shapes and vibrant hues. here are lots of smells that make up a home. Some of them, of course, more pleasant than others. The smell of a summer’s day, windows open, bedlinen freshly laundered, floors and mirrors polished and bright, for instance, is a good one. Christmas, with its pine scents, log fires and mulled wine warming is another (difficult though it is to imagine at this time of year). Yesterday’s lingering fish pie, on the other hand, is not so good; neither is that slightly mildewy empty house smell that makes coming back from holiday even more grim. Logic says that if homes are susceptible to smell and smell is integral to mood, then ultimately if we are to be happy at home, the place needs to smell good. Perfumers' scents for the home create atmosphere, make people feel at home and lift spirits. The ultimate scent is reassuringly fragrant without being cloying or overbearing. In fact, you should hardly really notice it with your conscious mind – you should experience it as an abstract and visceral sense of belonging. Jo Malone MBE, founder of Jo Loves, is someone who knows about fragrance. She says this: “Scent is my absolute style essential and I immediately identify my home by the smells that I fill it with. I love very clean citrus scents at home and at the moment I’m burning my Lemongrass Layered Scented Candles in every room. I’m always discovering new ways to use scent at home and recently I have started to gently warm orange peel in the oven and to use a few drops of my favourite fragrance in warm water to scent wooden floors.” Clean citrus scents are very much Malone’s successful trademark,

HOW TO Fill your home with fragrance
THE RATTAN STICKS DIFFUSER Interior designer Alessandreo Agrati invented the rattan sticks diffuser in 1990 and his brand Culti Milano is the leader in high end perfumery for the home. They even offer a bespoke service. culti.com
HOMES are SUSCEPTIBLE to SMELL , and SMELL is integral to MOOD, so our HOMES NEED TO BE FRAGRANT while acclaimed perfume designer Azzi Glasser’s scents are heavier and more exotic. Her Perfumer's Story range of candles are suited to different rooms in a scheme that she calls ‘fragrance architecture’ – so the widely praised Black Moss candle is for the hallway or living room, ‘to create an instant wow’, while Twisted Iris ‘will make your bathroom smell like a stately home bathroom’. Victoria Cator is an interior designer who has moved into the world of fragrance and launched a line of beautiful, complex candles. She says: “If someone can say: ‘I’ve smelt this before’ when these candles are burning, then I have succeeded. I love the idea that scents can conjure up brief glimpses of the past to bring depth to the present.” There’s something poetic about describing fragrance and as Paris-based perfumer Rami Mekdashi of Lola James Harper sums up: “A home has a particular atmosphere, made up of colors, light, objects, decoration, sound, resonance, organization, proportion and, of course, smell… Fragrance is a part of the home.” ◆
THE CANDLE Here's how Victoria Cator describes her Casablanca candle: ‘Laughter in the rain, opening the door to a bunch of unexpected flowers, fresh cut green stems plunged in water, elegant, exuberant and utterly chic. Fleeting yet forever.’ victoriacator.com

URBAN PIONEER
With housing in high demand, anything and everything can be converted into a residential space, which is where Sara Emslie’s book comes into play. Exploring renovations and discovering how to define key elements of an urban space, Emslie brings together the old with the new in a historical context that shows how much she understands about transforming a space. Exposed brick and worn wooden panels are some of the robust features of the book, while polished light fixtures and table tops offer balance. £19.99, rylandpeters.com
MODERN VINTAGE STYLE
Broken up into two parts, Emily Chalmers brings together examples of textiles, lighting and furniture before showing you how to incorporate vintage pieces into a space while simultaneously ensuring they also serve a purpose. Practicality
THE SCANDINAVIAN HOME
Crafted around the idea of embracing light to enlarge and enliven space, the minimalist appearance of Scandi interiors is having a massive moment. Blogger Niki Brantmark displays interiors that fit the trend, but throw an individual spin with dark walls, mismatched furniture and shelves brimming with books. Brantmark also showcases accessibility by showing that Scandi style isn’t limited to central city flats; farmhouses, mountain cabins and beach houses can also be the perfect backdrops for the clean lines and warm wooden textures essential to this design craze. £19.99, rylandpeters.com
reigns supreme in this book in Chalmers’ approach to selecting and styling interiors. Her understanding of how shapes, colours and spaces can transform a vintage piece and modernise it takes form in advice that’s easy to understand and apply. The scrapbook design of the pages further emphasises Chalmers’ desire to communicate the importance of surrounding yourself with things you love. £19.99, rylandpeters.com
A BEAUTIFUL MESS
Claire Bingham humanises a space by sharing the stories that make up the eclectic and truly lived-in homes she visits. The book looks at homes around the world and has text in both English and German. Bingham brings together everything: from modern to industrial, vintage to IKEA classics, and bold colours with muted pastels and neutrals. The images are beautiful and the interiors are anything but minimalistic, choosing organised clutter over clean lines. teneues.com

CREATIVE LIVING COUNTRY
Leave the busy city streets behind and join Chloe Grimshaw as she takes you on a journey to the spacious British countryside. Half of the book focuses on dreamy interiors that take advantage of the larger rooms offered by the country, but the other half recounts stories of hopeful career moves made by artists, architects, makers and designers. Grimshaw shows how beneficial a move from city to country can be for an artistic and creative mind, both financially and intrinsically. The book explores 25 houses across the UK and celebrates how innovatively these pioneers have worked the countryside to their advantage, proving that a London address isn’t the only aspect of success. £19.95, thameshudson.com

drian Edmondson – comedian, actor, musician, national treasure – has published his first children's book and it's a sweet, funny and clever story with a courageous young heroine. Tilly's mother is dead and her father spends his time in the shed tinkering with his time machine, having been 'let go' by his job (to Tilly's great bafflement) while Tilly is left to fend for herself. One day the time machine actually starts to work, though it functions unpredictably and a long journey ensues, taking in the Battle of Trafalgar and Queen Victoria's parlour as well as the streets of Victorian London. It's an excellent debut, marking Edmondson out as a children's writer with great promise. ◆ £6.99; Puffin Books

earl Lowe has come full circle. As it turns out, her passion for fashion began when she was in primary school and designed a collection for her mum’s London boutique. “It was mostly sweatshirts, with weird things hanging off them," she explains. "They were hilarious, but mum saw potential there; she always said I had an eye. It’s funny - I got into music so young I’d completely forgotten about that collection, but it turns out fashion was my first love after all.” Her journey back to designing clothes has indeed been a roundabout one, along a bumpy road. Utterly seduced by the music world, Pearl spent her latter teenage years fronting the Britpop band Powder, which led her into a world of booze and drugs from which she wouldn’t

I’m a very SOCIABLE PERSON - I end up GIVING IT 110% whatever it is emerge for a decade. With one (brief) marriage and a daughter under her belt, she had lived enough for anyone twice her age by the time she was 20. She puts her behaviour down to her rebellious spirit: “I was such a London girl; I was brought up in Harrow and then we moved to Maida Vale when I was 14. I went to school in Chelsea and mum and dad both worked in fashion but our upbringing
was geared towards professional careers. I suppose I was kicking against that" Her brothers are both super successful lawyers, while Pearl always felt like the black sheep, and turned down a place at Goldsmiths to join the band: “Suddenly we were on tour with The Verve. It was mad, and just snowballed. Then I had Daisy so young, but I was still a bit lost. I’d go off on tour and my parents would end up looking after the baby most of the time, because all I knew was singing and that’s what I wanted to do.” After a couple of crazy years, Pearl met Danny Goffey, the drummer in mega indie band Supergrass, and after that her life started to make a bit more sense. Despite being just 21, and in one of the biggest bands in the country, Danny also felt the need for some stability in his life. Happy to become a father to Daisy, he and Pearl quickly set up home in Camden. What followed was ten amazing

years of success and socialising, as well as expanding their family: “I’m a very sociable person - I end up giving everything 110%, whatever it is,” Pearl explains. Her book All That Glitters, which came out in 2007 when Pearl was still in early recovery from her addiction, sets out in vivid detail just how bad things became by the end. “I needed to get away,” Pearl says, plainly. And having survived juggling a career, a wild social life and having three children in London in what sounds like pretty chaotic circumstances, the couple decided on a clean break, and moved out – first to Hampshire, and then on to Somerset. Still, life in the country has turned out to be far from quiet. Pearl and Danny may have lost touch with most of their old London crowd, but their social life locally is demanding: “There is such a great community of creative people living here, we find it really inspiring.” In fact, being a local was how she got involved her current project, a collection of the capes from her Petit Pearl Lowe label made for Selfish Mother's FMLY Store. It seems that the whole project came together very organically: “I had really enjoyed my work with drug charity Crisis, and I just woke up one morning thinking ‘I’ve got to do something, but I don’t know what [for charity]." Literally that day a mutual friend took her down to the FMLY store in nearby Bruton and Pearl and Molly got on like a house on fire. The pieces are
selling fast, with 10% of every purchase going to the charity Tommy's. “Molly and I are dying to do more work together." Pearl's other creative outlet is interior design. She helps people to achieve a look she's become known for, which she describes as “Totally vintage, faded glamour and imperfect. I like things which are a bit broken. I am always buying heaps of old rubbish because I know I can make it look fantastic, with the right care and attention, and put in the right place.” This work also scratches an itch which saves her family stress: "We’ve been in this house since February, and I am not joking I have already looked at another property… poor Daisy says we’ve moved 18 times since she was born. But that’s how I learned to do the job: buying a house I love, doing it up and making it perfect. But then it’s done and I’m ready to move on.” Their present family home is a classic

Georgian 11-bedroom house in Frome, with handsome proportions and heavenly views. Will she stay put finally, once she's finished doing it up? “We all love this house. I think even if Danny and I left, the kids would refuse to move again…” Having her children around on her journey from wild child to country girl was important for Pearl and they are all still a really tight unit despite the boys growing up fast: Alfie is now 21 and Frankie is 18, while Betty, the baby, is just 11. Shutting the door on the rest of the world and spending time as a family is what they all love doing. “It’s the most amazing thing to be a mum – it teaches you so much. And I’m so ready to be a grandma!” No pressure then, Daisy. ◆

estway Sports Centre in North Kensington is possibly the last place you would expect to find a sport mainly played at our most elite public schools. Hunkered beneath the A40 flyover, its location growls of grimy, urban inner city – and that was before the sports centre became the focal point for the relief effort for neighbouring Grenfall Tower. But here, amid the scrawling graffiti and hum of traffic, the historic sport of Eton Fives is played by local children as young as ten. Ryan Perrie ended up first playing Fives at Westway simply because he was late for his tennis lesson. Fast forward a decade and Perrie is one of the UK’s top Boys playing Fives at Eton ten players and he’s made his career out of the sport, teaching it at Berkhamsted prep school. The Westway Sports Centre has the only public Eton Fives courts in England. Until now the sport has been mainly confined to the public schools that have built courts, where old boys and new boys (and recently girls) are able to play. “It is a source of enormous frustration to us that the vast majority of our courts are in schools so we can’t open them to the public,” says Gareth Hoskins, Secretary of the Eton Fives Association. But this is set to change as the Fives community looks to expand its sport beyond the public school walls. Winchester and Eton. Pupils at these schools The EFA have just launched the Five Star have played for hundreds of years, but the Project, a seven-year strategy to create new rules were formalised in the late 19th century centres for Eton Fives across the country. “We and the first match was between Eton and are looking to produce a huge increase in the Harrow in February 1885, with Eton emerging number of courts and players through clubs, as victors. schools and universities,” says Hoskins. Rugby and Winchester Fives, with their So what exactly is Fives? There are three simpler, more straightforward court shape, forms of the Fives game in this country, each place more of a premium on power and named after their originating schools: Rugby, fitness. Eton Fives has a little more subtlety

and nuance; its distinctive buttress is derived from the side of the chapel at Eton College where boys first played. “It’s strategically quite different,” says Hoskins. Fives’ great plus points is that it’s easy to play and accessible to anyone aged 8 -80. In recent years the sport has seen enormous growth in the girl’s game. “Eton Fives is a fantastic game for girls,” says Hoskins, “as it places emphasis on skill and placement rather than brute force.” Teamwork is also very important in Eton Fives: “It’s to do with the geography of the court,” says Hoskins, “you simply can’t win on your own.” The major stumbling block to widening the Fives game is the cost of the courts. But John Reynolds, 11 times Kinnaird Cup winner (the national trophy) thinks he might have found the answer to this problem. He is developing a ‘flatpack’ Eton Fives court with the help of a German company who make squash courts. They are adapting the pre-fab technology to create Eton Fives and Rugby Fives courts that can arrive on the back of a lorry. Because they are made in a factory, they can go up in a week so it slashes the costs. This is the “Holy Grail” says Reynolds, “getting the cost down so people don’t gulp and swallow at the price”. As a ballpark figure, three traditionally built concrete Eton Fives courts will cost around £250,000. Reynolds says he’s “hoping to halve that”. Reynolds’ first ‘flat pack’ courts are soon to go up at Skinners Academy in Manor House, Hackney. He hopes they will just be the first of many courts for state schools. “It’s too good a game to keep to the private sector," he says. ◆ Eton Fives Association: etonfives.com Rugby Fives Association: rugbyfivesassociation.net JPR Courts: jprcourts.com | 07980 844906

hey say “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”. Well the same could be said for Indonesia - a beguiling string of volcanic islands home to resplendent beaches, Komodo dragons and jungles sheltering elephants, orangutans and tigers. It has copious amounts to offer travellers and with thousands of islands, reveals itself to you more and more each trip. Having visited on a gap year I was thrilled to be returning to the country as a proper grownup, this time visiting Seminyak on Bali. We stayed at The Oberoi, a beachfront sanctuary boasting world-renowned service and some of the best sea views in Bali. An enormous swimming pool filled with stone turtle fountains takes centre stage in the grounds, surrounded by tasselled parasols that overlook a stretch of beach. You can peer at the crashing waves and the distant tourist touts from the extreme comfort of a sunbed predressed with towels and equipped with sun cream, cold water and frangipani scented facial mist. Heaven. Further back from the sea and dotted throughout beautifully tended gardens are traditional thatched-roof lanais and private villas.
INTERIORS INSPIRED BY NATURE AT NIHIWATU
VILLAS ARE BUILT INTO THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE
We opted for a luxury villa with a secluded courtyard garden, rock pond and raised dining pavilion, but the cheaper Lanai rooms are just as impressive. Inside you’ll find marble floors, enormous king-sized beds with hand-carved wooden headboards, four types of pillow, thick curtains to keep out the light and excellent air conditioning. A lovely bathroom contains more fluffy towels than you could ever need, plus two sinks and sumptuous bath scrubs, soaps and moisturisers. Throughout the rooms are well-thought-out details such as antimosquito spray, a day bag for the beach and both indoor and outdoor slippers. Dinner is a relaxed affair at the romantically-lit Kura Kura restaurant, named after the turtles that nest on the nearby sands. Expect European and Indonesian delicacies, with innovative dishes like seared Pacific scallops, Indonesian satay, udang goreng tiger prawns and Rijsttafel, a sumptuous legacy of Bali’s Dutch colonial tradition. Breakfast is served in the delightful, open-air Frangipane café where there is a huge range of options including duck or chicken eggs, pork or beef sausages and dozens of juices. Should you wish to leave the complex,

NIHIWATU is one of the MOST PRISTINE resorts on THIS PLANET Seminyak’s market, health cafes and boutiques are well worth a visit, as is Ubud, roughly a two-hour drive. Based in the uplands of Bali, the area is known as a center for traditional crafts and dance and is dotted with Hindu temples and shrines, surrounded by paddy fields. Also famed for its food scene, we stop off at Casa Luna restaurant for a traditional Balinese cookery class. Headed up by chef Janet De Neefe and her friendly staff, we discover the herbs, spices and techniques of Balinese cooking as well as the ceremonial and cultural significance of food. Preparing a lavish feast as a group, we create chicken curry, wok-fried eggplant, coconut and anchovy sambal, bean-coconut salad and moreish sago pudding. Suitably stuffed, we return satiated and sleepy to The Oberoi. The next day, we hop on a quick private flight to Sumba - an island largely untouched by tourism. Despite being twice the size of Bali, Sumba’s population

barely reaches a sixth of Bali’s population. Nihiwatu - twice voted the world’s best hotel by Travel + Leisure magazine - is our destination. Once the preserve of savvy surfers, its unspoilt beaches attracted Claude and Petra Graves in 1988 as they searched for the perfect wave. They fell in love with the place and named it Nihiwatu, meaning “mortar stone”. By 2012, stories of the unregulated freedom and beauty of the resort reached American entrepreneur Christopher Burch, who came on board to expand the resort. An exotic combination of remote location and understated hedonism, it now attracts the global jet set and fashion elite.
TASSLED PARASOLS AT THE OBEROI'S OUTDOOR POOL
The OBEROI boasts some of the BEST SEA VIEWS in Bali The resort’s social and ecocredentials are top notch. Food miles are kept to a minimum: vegetables come of the resort’s own organic market garden; meat from its chicken farm; fish from the sea. Each of the 28 exquisite villas are designed to incorporate the surrounding nature, whether it’s swaying palms, colourful bougainvillea or dazzling ocean. We stay in one of Burch’s very own villas - perched upon a terrace with a spacious outdoor veranda, a private pool and a butler on speed dial. Interiors are open-plan, reflecting simple Indonesian architecture and using local materials like Alang Alang, teak and rattan. Exceptional villas aside, this hidden gem is for travellers in search of activitydriven experiences and unregulated freedom. There are countless things to do, from surfing, fishing and horse-riding
91 Chis_July17_ Indonesia.indd 91
to sunrise yoga, tours of the on-site chocolate factory and escorted trips to nearby villages. We try out the Spa Safari - a 90-minute trek through rice fields to Nihi Oka - a show-stopping area high on the cliffs. Greeted with fresh coconuts, you enjoy breakfast and lunch on a platform suspended among the trees and then head to a private section for unlimited spa treatments. Back at the resort there’s plenty more to entertain. The dreamy Boathouse bar, right on the edge of the waves, is a surfer’s paradise and offers spectacular sunsets. Ombak restaurant, overlooking the ocean, is ideal for intimate dinners as well as convivial feasts organised by the hotel like weekly BBQs and white parties. End your evening with a private outdoor cinema experience under the stars, but don’t forget to set your alarm for at least one early morning - you wouldn’t want to miss the chance to release baby turtle hatchlings into the ocean. They say Nihiwatu is on “the edge of wilderness” and with good reason. Offering authentic Indonesian experiences and surroundings in five-star luxury, it has to be one of the most beautiful and pristine resorts on this planet. ◆

barcelona bound by T A M A R V A N D E R H O E K
The Catalonian capital is the perfect spot for a shortterm property rental investment, but Airbnb is effectively banned. So why are investors still targeting it?
S
pain has long been a favourite holiday destination and retirement hotspot for Brits with its warm sunny climate and Mediterranean lifestyle, and the coastal metropolis of Barcelona is no exception. The city combines rich cultural heritage with a rapidly growing economy and quality of life complemented with over 300 days of sunshine annually. Such a mix brings tourism in droves, making for a buoyant short-term rental market. Or, at least it would, if Barcelona had one at all. Europe’s largest Mediterranean city has taken the strongest stance possible against the rise of the home-sharing phenomenon. The city authorities are no long providing licenses for short-term rentals and last year fined Airbnb €600,000 for letting unlicensed owners advertise on the website. There are only around 17,000 properties available on Airbnb in Barcelona, half of these being illegal. In Paris there are over 40,000 in total. So, why is it then, that residential property in Barcelona continues to attract a slew of international investors, particularly expats, who for Spain as a whole now make up 17% of the population?
“When a short-term letting market is constricted as much as this, medium and long-term rentals, of two to 12 months or more become the norm for those wanting to generate income,” comments Amanda Kendzior Athena’s Barcelona Destination Adviser. “In Barcelona long-term yields of 6% gross are easily achievable.” It’s a strong statement, but the basis for such a market is there. Over 8 million tourists visit the city each year, 80% foreign, and many choosing to stay for over a month. So with short-term rentals of less than one month no longer legal for properties without a permit, the medium and long-term market has the supply it needs. Additionally, the government are focusing on foreign investment by encouraging businesses and individuals to relocate to Barcelona; this is further expected to increase the demand. More than 5,000 foreign companies already have headquarters in Spain with 90% based in the Barcelona area; the domestic population
plays its part here too. As you’d expect, high long term rents aren’t the only reason for investors being able to put aside the lack of short term rentals. Barcelona’s geographical position between mountains and sea means space is limited. Old properties are now being refurbished and in some cases just the facade is kept, thus creating homes that are in line with 21st century demands. Last year renovated properties accounted for just under 50% of sales in Barcelona and prices are moving. “Prices in the centre have risen by 37% in the last four years but the market still has the same characteristics as it did before,” adds Kendzior. “We expect to see 15-20% a year in 2017 and 2018 as demand continued to outstrip supply.” It would seem this is possible too. Barcelona’s prices remain 20-30% cheaper than their peak in 2007 before the slump of the financial crisis. Low interest rates, a common feature in European property these days, are also feeding the market. But what areas of Barcelona are the best to invest in? For rental investment, Kendzior advises sticking to the most wellknown districts, like the Gothic Quarter, where the city’s growing population of young professionals prefer to be close to everything; work, play and the sea. For capital appreciation, the vibrant boho-chic neighbourhood of Gracia, which sits above Eixample is Kendzior’s best bet. It’s central enough to walk to the centre but also has a village feel. There’s a new train station opening for direct access to the airport and this could feed a rise outside of what’s generally happening across the city. ◆ For information on investing in Barcelona visit athenaadvisers.com

here was a time when no one wanted graffiti daubed outside their home, but now it’s a selling point for one development just off the Portobello Road. Enstar Capital is refurbishing a property there into luxury flats, which for several years have had a Banksy on its exterior side wall. Call ed‘The Artist’ the graffiti remains, albeit framed behind bulletproof glass, on Acklam Road. It’s a 7ft by 14ft piece that is said to be worth £2.3 million, which is now the centrepiece of a Enstar Capital’s £6.5 million upgrade of the threestorey building. Properties within Sartoria House – which also used to be home to fashion designer Ozwal Boateng – are not for sale but instead will be rented out at £1,000 a week. It’s the studio and home of Turner Prize nominated David Mach, who is most famous for his 1989 installation of tumbling red telephone boxes in Kingston upon Thames. His home and workshop is for sale at £2.7 million. More information: themodernhouse.co.uk (0207 581 5234).

WHERE MARTIN HIT THE MONEY

uthor Martin Amis is famous for his 1980s novels Money and London Fields and in 2008 was named as one of the UK’s 50 greatest writers since 1945. But the 67-year-old author and intellectual also likes stirring up controversy. He recently described Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn as lacking education, humour and a grasp of the British national character, which set social media alight as Corbynistas rallied to his support. Amis witnessed a different sort of blaze earlier this year when his New York home caught fire. But despite the inferno, Amis decided to stick with New York, even though he could have returned to England and bought his old home, which is now for sale at £7.5m. It’s in Primrose Hill and has five bedrooms, three reception rooms, four bathrooms and a self-contained studio apartment. More information from yopa.co.uk

or fans of Graham Greene there are plenty of properties to visit where the Brighton Rock author left his mark. But his best-known former home is a Queen Anne house at 14 Clapham Common Northside which he rented for his family for five years during the war. Many of the local landmarks near the property, which has a Blue Plaque, were included in his book The End of the Affaire, including nearby St Mary’s Church and The Windmill pub. The house was bombed in 1940 but luckily Greene’s family had already evacuated to Sussex and he was out that night with his lover in central London. No. 14 Clapham Common Northside, which was rebuilt after the war, was subsequently split into apartments. Its top-floor two-bedroom flat – where Greene wrote many of his most famous novels – has just sold for £835,000 via website onthemarket.com

oxing fans around the world were on the edge of their seats recently for the sensational WBA heavyweight title fight between Brit Anthony Joshua and Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko. The match at Wembley Stadium ended in the 11th round when Joshua knocked out his opponent with a left hook. After the match Joshua returned to his mother’s home in North London, and was also soon back in the ring training for his next bouts. But before his Klitschko fight, Joshua holed up in a palatial rented mansion to escape the world’s media and to prepare for the fight with his sevenstrong management team. The house, which has seven bedrooms, a huge private back garden and a cinema, indoor swimming pool, gym and steam room, was rented by the boxer for £20,000 a week.
