t's enormously exciting to be featuring Dominic West this month. The Sheffieldborn Etonian may be a huge Hollywood star but he still lives in west London, in a colourful house that he shares with his wife and children. He could be so much more starry than that, though he will admit to noticing his heart-throb status among the mothers at his children's school. They look at him slightly too much, he tells us. So if that's you, and your children are playdating at the Wests, then don't think he hasn't noticed. He also tells us about his role in Finding Dory (something he took on both to please his kids and to reunite with Idris Elba) as well as the next season of The Affair (it starts in November). But we're not all about Hollywood stars in this

issue, of course. Mostly our focus is closer to home as we begin to think about autumn and the new season's fashions and furnishings. Fashion-wise, we meet the woman behind Charlotte Simone's fabulous fluff y scarves (which we're heavily coveting this month), while in the world of interiors we talk to Aneeqa Khan, the entrepreneur who has made eporta into the Airbnb of the interiors world in just one year. With a big focus on ideas for the home this month, this issue is packed with images to inspire. We hope you like it. ◆

t would appear that Dominic West has mellowed somewhat since his days playing bluecollar Baltimore cop Jimmy McNulty in hit HBO drama The Wire. Having garnered quite the reputation as a ladies’ man, the ruggedly handsome actor has shed his lothario image and is now very much settled down with his wife, landscape gardener Catherine Fitzgerald and their three children, Dora, 10, Senan, 8, and Francis, 7. The family lives in a threestorey 19th century house in Shepherds Bush, which the couple converted from flats back into a singular family home and filled with art and ornaments, books and trinkets from their travels and bright textiles, creating an air of sophisticated bohemia.
With Ruth Wilson in The Affair
Having embraced his role as a handson family man, West was understandably delighted when he got the call asking him to voice a lazy sea lion in Finding Dory, the follow up to Disney Pixar’s animated monster-hit Finding Nemo and admits that a huge part of taking the role was to impress his children, who reacted gleefully: “Jaws, floor, game over. Yeah, I've been dining off this for a long time, bragging about it to all the other parents for two years. They all hate me,” jokes the actor. The film is set one year after the 2003 original and finds our finned friends – Nemo, his father Marlin and of course, Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) - living peacefully in the reef. One day, amnesiac Dory has a flashback from her childhood and decides to track down her parents who lived at the Jewel of Morro Bay in

California, leading the trio on another madcap adventure where they encounter dangerous giant squids, a seven legged octopus and a confused beluga whale who is unable to echolocate. West plays Rudder, one of two cockney sea lions who are tasked with helping our aquatic heroes, alongside none other than his Wire co-star Idris Elba, who plays Fluke. It is the first time the pair have worked together since their days as nemeses on the mean streets of Baltimore, resulting in plenty of playful banter and improvisation in the recording studio. Elba said all he needed to hear was 'sea lion, Dory, Dominic West,' and he was sold, with West agreeing it was a ‘no-brainer’. “I hadn't seen Idris for a long time and the idea of us being in a scene together was great because we actually didn't share too many scenes together in The Wire. We were more antagonists, always plotting, so that was nice – and I was very keen to see him again.” It was actually Dory’s voice star, Ellen DeGeneres, who helped the sequel come about, having campaigned tirelessly since the original. She has said that this is a film that the world needs right now; that Dory’s positivity is something we can harness to guide us through these difficult times. West, having confessed to feeling a ‘sadness’ and ‘change in the air in London’ since the Brexit vote, wholeheartedly agrees: “I woke up the other day and thought, 'Oh great, I'm going to see Finding Dory for the first time with my kids and I couldn't be more excited.' It's the perfect kind of film to get you out of whatever blues you're going through.” Many people think of West as the stereotypical Old Etonian, but the 46-yearold was actually born in Sheffield and is one of seven siblings in a close-knit Catholic family. His father owned a plastic

factory and its success afforded his son’s illustrious education. Recently, West told the Radio Times that being sent to Eton was ‘the worst feeling’ he’d ever had, even comparing it to the grief he felt when his parents died. He does however credit the experience with helping him become the great actor he is today, saying: “I learned to bury the emotional effects of that and then I went to drama school and had to dig it all up again." But academic credentials don’t always lead to instant success and West’s career has been hard won. After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1995 there were seven years of bit-parts in films (he played a palace Guard in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace) and small TV roles before landing the job that changed his life in The Wire. Critics and viewers alike were blown away by the gritty and multi-faceted drama which highlighted the many ramifications of the illegal drug trade in America, and were wowed by West and Elba, who played arrogant detective McNulty and drug kingpin Stringer Bell respectively, finding their accents and swagger to be so convincing that people found it hard to believe that the pair were from the UK and not born and bred in Baltimore.
in Showtime drama The Affair, which will air its third series in November. Exploring the emotional effects and fallout of an extramarital relationship between Solloway and Alison Lockhart (Ruth Wilson) after they meet in the resort town of Montauk in Long Island, the show has proved to be emotional, steamy and immensely popular, earning West a certain breed of fan. “I'm getting recognized a lot more, little side-glances. And it's happening in the strangest places. I went to a football camp with my sons during the summer and kept getting all these looks from the mums. You know those, trying to catch your eye and holding
it a little too long. And you have an idea what they're thinking,” he says with a laugh. For his wife this perhaps, isn’t so entertaining, especially after West was reported as saying that Fitzgerald hadn’t watched the show, something he is quick to deny. “Rubbish, I said that as a joke. She's seen it, dips in and out, it's just my job to her, she not irrational like that. Will she watch it all? Of course not, she's a very busy woman with a lot on her plate.” And when pressed on whether she had been on set during one of ‘those scenes’ he quips back with a chortle: “I love that, 'those scenes’. I don't even want to be there during those scenes!”u
I hadn't seen IDRIS IN A LONG TIME and the idea of us being IN A SCENE TOGETHER WAS GREAT
The enormous success of the show not only made the actor an overnight A-lister but also a household heartthrob, and West, who was dating aristocrat Polly Astor (the mother of his eldest child, Martha, now 18), is the first to admit that he got caught up in hyperbole of fame and wanted to play the field a bit longer. He has since expressed regret for his playboy behaviour and is much changed after marrying his former college sweetheart, Fitzgerald. In the last few years he has terrified audiences with his eerily accurate portrayal of serial killer Fred West in Appropriate Adult; been nominated for a Golden Globe in stunning period drama The Hour; and played the legendary Hemingway in recent film Genius. However, his most revered role of late has been as suave adulterer Noah Solloway

harlotte Beecham, 26, is the founder and creative director of Charlotte Simone, the British accessories label with over 200 stockists worldwide. The label is best known for the cult 'Popsicle' fluffy scarf, which has been worn by fashion’s favourite it-girls including Alexa Chung, Rita Ora and Olivia Palermo.
ABSOLUTELY: Why did you decide to start a brand at such a young age?
CHARLOTTE BEECHAM: My ‘light bulb moment’ happened in Paris while I was living there in my first year of university and I saw a glamourous woman standing on a street corner wearing a huge statement scarf. I did a double take and was transfixed by her chic look. It occurred to me that the scarf was the one untapped accessory and there was an opportunity to make them less practical and more ‘fashion’ and fun. An idea to create a scarf as an investment piece formed and whilst I was in my last year at New York University I had some samples made up. By the time I had graduated, I already had a couple of US stockists under my belt, which gave me the confidence to start building a brand.
NATALIE MASSENET'S letter
of congratulations is FRAMED on my desk
AB: Did you study fashion design? CB: I have no design background, so my friend who was studying at Parsons for Fashion Design helped me. I knew that bold fluffy materials were key to the look and I wanted to work with both faux and real fur to give customers a choice. I was lucky to find an incredible seamstress in the Garment District in New York who helped mock up my first designs.
AB: What were your first steps in starting your business?
CB: My dad gave me a loan of £6,000 when I was 21 to start the business. I used the money to have my initial samples made
and to shoot my first look book. Everyone around me was so encouraging and helpful. My sister was my first model and my friend took the photographs. I didn’t have a budget for a PR or a sales agent for the first year which pushed me to do everything myself. I didn’t have any contacts in the industry, but I think people like an ambitious young designer who isn’t afraid to call up buyers and journalists and ask for meetings. My dad is a fellow entrepreneur, so I’m very lucky to have him as my mentor. My strengths aren’t in the business or financial side, so I turn to him for help and advice.
AB: What were your first milestones? CB: The first major milestone was working with Rita Ora’s stylist Kyle De’Volle two years ago on our Bon Bon bag collaboration, which in turn led to Rita loaning her face to the collection just because she wanted

to support us. Those images catapulted the brand into the mainstream because so many magazines wanted to feature us, and it created a buzz on social media. Being nominated for the Emerging Accessory Designer Award at last year’s BFAs was very surreal. The letter of congratulations from Natalie Massenet is now framed on my desk.
AB: What are the biggest challenges you face?
CB: I definitely struggle with delegation. I’m a control freak, and ran the business on my
I made my first jacket OUT OF FLUFFY SCRAPS lying around the office own for so long, so now I find it difficult to pass tasks onto team members. I also find it very hard to switch off, as my business is my baby. I’m trying to figure out more of a balance between my work and personal life.
AB: You are known for a having a legion of celebrity fans and a big social media following. How important was this to building the brand? CB: The power of the right celebrity wearing your brand is huge and it’s been vital to our success. The first celebrity to wear a scarf was Olivia Palermo. She asked for a custom Popsicle (black with burgundy tail) and I made it for her myself. Olivia is so influential in the fashion world, so when she wears a piece, demand goes through the roof. Instagram has been the most important marketing and brand awareness tool, and much of our direct sales are driven from posts. I’m currently obsessed with Snapchat. As a young designer it’s fun to communicate to my followers via social media and document what’s happening with the brand on a daily basis.
41 NH_Oct16_CHARLOTTE SIMONE.indd 41
AB: Why did you decide to venture into outerwear?
CB: Charlotte Simone will always remain a scarf brand at its core, but there was a demand for more. It was a very organic process – I made my first jacket out of fluffy scraps lying around the office. I started to wear it and got such a great reaction from friends and buyers that I decided it was the right time to expand on the offering. We have six different styles in total, including the shaggy shearling ‘Chubby’ bombers, PVC ‘Mac Daddy’ trench coats and a leather ‘Biker’ jacket. This collection is definitely more grown-up, so whilst there are still splashes of the trademark bubblegum pink, the darker colour palette is more sophisticated. The brand is growing up with me and the customer. ◆
The jacket collection starts at £475; charlottesimone.com

hen did it become the norm for any colour treatment to require the dreaded patch test? Even if you have been dying your hair for decades, any new appointment will require a visit 24 hours ahead of the actual visit. It can't just be me that finds this annoying. But W11's new High Definition Beauty Boutique has found an ingenious, low-tech way round the problem by sending tiny test kits in the post. Brilliantly, I receive a small sticker to simply put behind my ear and forget about until it's removed at the appointment. Allergic reactions, apparently, are on the rise and salons are becoming increasingly cautious where anaphylactic shock is concerned. So as
IT'S BETTER to be slightly annoyed THAN IN HOSPITAL the therapist explains, it's better to be slightly annoyed than in hospital. Anyway I am here for a signature brow treatment: using a combination of waxing and threading, my uneven lines are reshaped and subtly tinted to leave me with impressively perfect brows in under an hour. This is a smart, professional salon offering treatments ranging from high definition makeup to high tech skin perfecting treatments via lashes, fingers and toes. VENISON TARTARE & CELERIAC REMOULADE ean and full-flavoured venison doesn’t need a gutsy red wine when served as a cold starter with tangy remoulade and an egg yolk. PUMPKIN RAVIOLI & PARMESAN his is a case of pairing local with local – an Italian wine for an Italian dish. The sweetness of the pumpkin filling, especially if there is sage in the mix, is a beautiful match with a good quality, zesty dry Pecorino (the wine grape, not the cheese), which just happens to love lashings of tangy parmesan cheese too. ● Harvey Nichols Pecorino 2014, £12 harveynichols.com

hen neighbourhood favourite Uli closed its doors on All Saint’s Road in August 2013 there were many who mourned its loss. But a resurrected version of the popular Pan-Asian restaurant has re-opened at the top end of Ladbroke Road almost three years to the day it closed, with original owner Michael Lim still at the helm and Graham Rebak as MD. The restaurant has had facelift as well as a change of address. The contemporary interior is light and airy; lots of natural oak and cool blue soft furnishings. There is a very inviting nook for private dining but on the night we visit – a balmy late summer evening – the prime spot is outside on the covered pavement terrace. Despite only being open a few days, the terrace is packed; slightly harassed waiters are only
just able to squeeze between tables where skinny immaculate women smoke cigarettes alongside portly dishevelled gentlemen. We are seated opposite devoted regulars Richard Curtis and Emma Freud and some of my parents’ friends are at an adjacent table; it is the perfect mix of Notting Hill old and new. Michael Lim, ever the consummate host, runs front of house with attentive

charm; no doubt the reason that Uli has such an illustrious following. We start with a range of small plates: soft shell crab with chilli padi has just the right crunch and kick, peppercorn salted calamari is better than E&O and Pacific fivespice pork ribs has us licking our fingers. A small order of crispy aromatic duck just isn’t enough. A main of whole steamed sea bass with ginger and garlic is cooked just right, the Peninsula malay lamb curry was very hot but relished by my husband.. Apart from an overly sugary sweet and spicy Thai aubergine, the cooking didn’t put a foot wrong. It was never surprising, rather more predictable but totally delicious. Just what you want from a great neighbourhood restaurant. u

M e th o D 1 If using fresh yeast, add the yeast and warm milk to a stand mixer with a dough hook attached. Mix until the yeast has dissolved. If using dried yeast, pour the warm milk into a bowl. Sprinkle on the yeast and whisk together. Cover with clingfilm and leave in a warm place for about 15 minutes to activate and become frothy and bubbly. Pour into the stand mixer with a dough hook attached. 2 Add the caster sugar and egg and mix again at medium speed. Start to add some of the flour, along with the salt and cardamom. Add the butter, at this stage mixing it in alternatively with bits of the flour. Stop adding flour once you have a fairly soft dough – you can always add more later. Cover the bowl with clingfilm and leave in a warm place for about 40 minutes to rise. 3 Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead through. Set two thirds of the dough aside. Roll the one third out into a circle that will fit into the cake pan. Spread on a layer of remonce almond paste, then a generous, even layer of pastry cream to cover the dough (you may not need it all). Add the raisins and put the pan to

FOOD & DRINK / RECIPES one side. 4 Roll out the remaining two thirds dough to a 30 x 30 cm square and add the rest of the remonce filling, spreading evenly. Roll the dough up into a tight roll and cut into 8 equal swirls. Place one swirl in the middle of the pan on top of the pastry cream and the rest around it, evenly. Squash the swirls down a bit if needed. Cover the pan with clingfilm then leave to rise for another 25 minutes. 5 Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) Gas 4. 6 Brush the cake with beaten egg, scatter over the flaked almonds and bake in the preheated oven for around 20 minutes. After this time, cover the top with foil and turn the heat down by about 20°C. Bake for another 20 minutes or until cooked. Remove from the oven and immediately cover with a clean, damp kitchen cloth to prevent a crust from forming. Leave to cool before serving. 7 To make the topping, sift together the icing sugar and cocoa powder and stir with a few spoons of hot water until smooth. Swirl over the cake and leave to set. This cake does not keep very well so is best served the same day it is made.
SAFFRON BUNDT CAKE with Pears Ser ves 10
I n g r e d i e nt S 30 g breadcrumbs • 50 g butter • 100 ml whole milk • 1/2 teaspoon ground saffron • 2 large or 3 small pears • a little lemon juice • 325 g caster sugar • 4 eggs • 300 g plain flour • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 teaspoon of salt • 50g Greek yogurt • icing sugar, for dusting • a 25-cm Bundt pan or ring pan, greased M e th o D 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) Gas 4. 2 Dust the greased Bundt or ring pan with the breadcrumbs, tipping out the excess. 3 Melt the butter and add the milk and ground saffron. Stir to combine and set
aside to infuse. 4 Peel and core the pears and cut into bite-sized chunks. Add a dash of lemon juice, stir and set aside. 5 In a mixing bowl, beat the sugar and eggs until thick, light and fluffy using a balloon whisk or a hand-held electric whisk. Mix the remaining dry ingredients together and sift into the egg mixture. Fold in until incorporated. Add the Greek yogurt and saffron-milk mixture and fold gently until completely combined. Pour the cake batter into the prepared Bundt pan. Add the pieces of pear – these will sink down during baking. 6 Bake for around 30–35 minutes in the preheated oven or until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Leave to cool in the pan before turning out onto a serving tray. Dust with icing sugar and serve, sliced, with a good dollop of whipped cream. PASTRY CREAM Makes aprox. 600–625g / 21–22oz
Ingredients ● 500 ml whole milk; 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped; 1 whole egg plus 1 egg yolk; 100 g caster sugar 30 g cornflour; 1/2 teaspoon salt; 25 g butter; Method ● In a saucepan, heat the milk with the vanilla seeds. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar and add the cornflour. When the milk has just reached boiling point, take it off the heat and pour one third into the egg mixture, whisking continuously. Once whisked through, pour the egg mixture back into the remaining hot milk. Return to the stove and bring to the boil, carefully. Whisk continuously as the mixture thickens, for just under a minute, then remove from the heat and stir in the salt and butter. Pour into a cold bowl and place a sheet of baking parchment on top to prevent the cream from forming a crust as it cools. The mixture will keep well in the refrigerator for a few days.
REMONCE ALMOND PASTE Makes aprox. 300g

hen Royal Mail devoted a set of new stamps to British design classics in 2009, the Anglepoise lamp was one of six items to feature. George Carwardine’s iconic lamp, created in 1932, has remained a design fixture ever since. Examples of the lamps can be found in households all over the world as well as in museums, and the name Anglepoise has come to be used, Hoover-style, for a whole genre of articulated task lights. The lamp’s genius lies in its springs. The fully adjustable arms remain perfectly in place when moved, mimicking the tension of human limbs The first four-spring Anglepoise was deemed too industrial for a domestic market so, in 1935, Carwardine

developed a three-spring version. The design, known as the Anglepoise Original 1227, has been modified over the years but is still generally considered the archetypalAnglepoise lamp. The aesthetic and remarkably engaging, anthropomorphic quality of a lamp that can constantly change its form has inspired musicians, artists, designers and writers over the years. In 1979, post punk pop group The Soft Boys made it into the pop charts with the song “I want to be an Anglepoise lamp”. First appearing in the computeranimated indent that launched Pixar in 1986, an Anglepoise character now features in the company logo, bouncing into shot at

the start of every film. In 1985, innovative sculptor David Mach formed a large flowing hand out of 360 black Anglepoise lamps for an exhibition at the Oxford Museum of Modern ArtThe Anglepoise lamp that sat on the desk of Roald Dahl was considered so much a part of the writer’s persona that, in 2004, a Giant version of the Anglepoise Original 1227 lamp was specially commissioned for the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre. The Giant 1227 has since gone into volume production. Designer Paul Smith’s collaboration with Anglepoise resulted in a multi-coloured collection, while the new Margaret Howell range comes in muted shades. The future for Anglepoise looks bright. anglepoise.com

Location,
LOCATION Allowing film crews into your home can be an exciting way to earn extra money. Shoot veteran Natasha Courtenay-Smith offers some advice Wo r d s p e n d l e h a r t e

e’re all familiar with the stock domestic setting. When adverts depict families sitting in their kitchens happily eating cereal together, or discussing gravy granules, or watching their mother load the washing machine, they are usually sitting in someone’s actual kitchen. A real home, vacated by its inhabitants for the duration. And as
ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES
•NH_Oct16_HOLLAND ROAD.indd 66
an increasing number of homeowners are realising, making your space available as a film location can be a lucrative source of extra income. Take Natasha Courtenay-Smith. She is a canny, multi-skilled entrepreneur who set up an online press agency and who now offers services including digital strategy and business mentoring. She's busy – and so is her large Edwardian house in Kensal Rise, which is in regular demand as a shoot location. "I think of all the ways you can earn a bit of extra money, this is a really fun
and entertaining one. It's really exciting when your house is on TV," she says. The actual process is not for the faint-hearted or anyone too precious, as Courtenay-Smith is very aware. "When you've been on shoots yourself it's easier and you understand," she says. "The agencies get quite annoyed with people who sign their houses up but then can't cope with the crew bringing so much stuff with them. I mean, why would you register your house if that's going to bother you?" So, how does it work? To begin with, Courtenay-Smith decorated her house very much with shoots in mind. She and her husband knocked through the downstairs rooms to create a large open-plan living space, as much for film crews as for family life. "I wanted it to be a location house, so when we redecorated it we wanted to keep it a blank canvas. Airy, not cluttered." A shoot might involve anything from a crew of four shooting stills to 30 people trooping in and taking over the entire house. "People start filing in and it's really fast – they can take over every single room. I can see why people get stressed." Her house was entirely taken over for two days for a catfood advert – "It was an epic job – two days and 35 people – but when you see the finished version it's like, blink and you'll miss it."

Online Decorating Introducing Aneeqa Khan, the entrepreneur behind eporta, the Airbnb of the interiors world Wo r d s H a n n a h H o p k i n s

here is simply too much choice. The interiors industry is swamped with so many options that anyone choosing anything from a tap to a shelving system is hard-pressed to know where to start. But instead of being inundated by the array of online interiors shops at our disposal, savvy homeowners are bookmarking eporta. A site for interiors professionals, it allows you to discover and buy pieces from all over the world in one place, from unknown craftspeople to established luxury brands. Known as the Airbnb of the interiors market, the online portal connects furniture and product designers with potential buyers such as retailers, architects and interior designers. It combines a slick catalogue and a messaging service through which buyers and sellers can hook up, tailor orders

and negotiate discounts. Like Airbnb, the company takes a cut of the deal price agreed by the two sides of the transaction. The brainchild of Aneeqa Khan, previously head of strategy at Zoopla, the brand was born when she bought a place in Brixton and struggled to find furniture to fill it. “I was shocked at how difficult it was to access beautiful and original products despite the huge number of fantastic brands around the world”, she says. “Digging deeper, I realised that it wasn’t just a case of products being hard to find for consumers, and actually the real issue in the industry was that professional buyers needed an online platform to help them discover and manage trade relationships in one place.” In a global industry where hundreds of thousands of brands are dotted around the world, eporta simplifies the buying process and fast-tracks relationship building by making it easy to work directly with suppli-

Designed to show the latest in high-tech integration, as well as bespoke furniture, the new DSE Group showroom is not to be missed. Founder and CEO David Slater, has over 25 years experience in the custom install market and provides his customers with an integrated digital life style. Whether it's for one person or an entire family, we can make audio, video, lighting, airconditioning and heating as well as their remote security and home monitoring, work for them in a way that it will enhance their daily lives. This is what we are showing in our Hyde Park showroom.” On entering, visitors are greeted by a mind blowing 55-inch ultra high definition (UHD) screen that streams 4K content and high definition audio in the heart of a living room setting. The acoustics in this room are particularly remarkable. There are two luxury tower speakers
from Meridian Audio as well as two inwall invisible speakers hidden behind the TV. Having the two options side by side, means you can experience the options live and choose best suits you. Slater comments, “On our consultation process, we get to know our clients and what their day-to-day is so that we can offer a tailored solution. You wouldn’t change your smart home every year. At DSE, we know how to future proof our projects and make sure to foster a long relationship with our clients to cater for their needs now and in years to come.” The showroom integration is based around a Control4 system that also manages the heating, blinds, air-con,

The showroom continues onto an office area, a kitchen, meeting room and a toilet. All finished in modern clean-line and with the best furniture and audiovisual equipment. DSE Group started trading in 1992, developing mid to high-end properties in the north east. The company grew fast and in 2000 DSE Digital was launched adding home automation to the group’s offerings. But why move to London? Slater explains, “London’s property development growth is significantly superior to anywhere else in the UK, even after the Brexit vote. We chose
W2 as there is a significant amount of investment poured into the borough. There is the Westfield shopping centre, Cross Rail and many vibrant businesses blooming in the area. “The showroom is now the beating heart of DSE. From here we will also run the north east arm of the company. We have spent a lot of money to show potential clients the quality of our home automation and manufacturing company.” The advantage of having a physical store, instead of the more economical online option, is that people can experience the technology. Slater remarks, “If you want to shop online you
will only be able to compare prices and products, you wont get inspiration and you certainly don’t get to experience the technology. Clients want to make a wise investment with us and we always provide a completely customised service. You wouldn’t buy an expensive suit off the internet and expect it to fit as well as a one made for you at a tailors shop, would you?” The showroom took just three months to develop. “Its always hard to come up with new design concepts,” points out Slater, “There was a lot of building work but what took longer was buying the right products for this project. Its all about connections in the design world and fortunately we have good ones. We love bouncing ideas off other developers. The project did run smoothly but up rooting a northern business and transferring everything to the south added stress.”
77 NH_Oct16_Roselind Design.indd 77
We always provide a COMPLETELY CUSTOMISED service The main challenge DSE Group faced was fitting everything in a modest space but still achieve a sense of spaciousness, comfort and luxury. To keep the showroom fresh, the soft furnishes will change on a quarterly bases and DSE has agreed with a local art dealer to supply different art pieces also quarterly. There are plenty of reasons to visit so go now. u

feel I’m only just getting started…” Says Australian Architect Erfan Azadi. This may sound like a strange claim from a man who has designed and built buildings on every continent, an opportunity he admits he was fortunate to have had, but he’s the type that always likes to ask: How did the traveller arrive at his start point? Having begun his career in Sydney in the late 90’s, by 30 Erfan had travelled the world as a Senior Designer for Yoo, working with iconic designers like Phillipe Starck and Jade Jagger. “Those years were a great learning experience for me, the projects were all encompassing: architecture, design, furniture, branding, marketing, sales…. It’s not a typical experience for a young architect” Now 40 and running his own design studio, Duck & Shed, he’s more focused on matters closer to home. “I like to walk the streets of my neighbourhood sometimes, looking at the big houses and imagining what I would do if it were my project. I hate it when I then see one of these imaginary projects later on with another architects sign up on the hoardings. ‘Another missed opportunity,’ I think to myself.” Specialising in the design and construction of residential projects in and around the Royal Borough, Duck & Shed could be considered local experts, having completed numerous high-profile home renovations throughout the area, including some listed buildings and, perhaps more notably, a penthouse on the exclusive Kensington Palace Gardens. Born in Iran, Erfan has lived in over 15 different cities all over the world, in countries including Venezuela, New Zealand
A LOT OF MY clients end up AS FRIENDS – and friends as CLIENTS and Australia, but he considers himself a Londoner – specifically a ‘Notting Hillbilly’. “My parents moved around a lot when I was growing up. Maybe that messed me up somehow – I don’t know, but it did mean that from an early age I learnt to relate to people and make new friends quickly. This is unbelievably useful in my line of work where you have so many different stakeholders and contributors on every project.” Not all of Duck & Shed projects are built for the super wealthy, he says, but they are all highly bespoke.
Erfan says the key driver of success when creating this type of detailed work is trust. “Trust between the design team, trust between the suppliers, the craftsmen and myself, trust between the contractor and my team and most importantly trust between my clients and me. No man is an island, and every project is a collaboration” Building collaborative teams is one thing Erfan considers himself good at, along with his dedication to delivering the best possible outcome for his clients. Being a boutique studio, Duck & Shed limits the number of projects taken on each year, never committing to more than a handful of carefully selected projects, ensuring clients always receive a high-quality, focused service. Duck & Shed were recently named by ELLE Décor as one of the top 30 Architects and designers in their annual “Best in Britain” design directory and were long-listed for “Emerging Practice of the Year” by World of Interiors, accolades that Erfan doesn’t necessarily take too seriously. “We are definitely not number one… yet, but we will always try harder for our clients. People really understand
that and appreciate everything you do for them, which is the best part of the job. These days, a lot of clients end up as friends, and a lot of my friends end up as clients. We recently finished a project that took over a year to complete – there was not single word or email exchanged in frustration the entire time. Incredible. When I hear about the problems people have on their projects I just laugh. 'Should’ve come to Duck & Shed,' I say.” @erf_duck on Instagram duckandshed.com

HOUSE TO HOME Completely change your home with the help of Roselind Wilson Design
R
oselind Wilson Design was appointed to carry out the design and complete refurbishment of this 2,138 square foot duplex apartment in Belsize Park, North West London. The empty property already demonstrated a spectacular foundation; extraordinary high ceilings, curved walls, elaborate original cornicing and enormous windows flooding the rooms with light. This backdrop coupled with the client’s international influences, allowed Roselind Wilson Design to produce a stunning architectural space; modern yet classic, with a focus on rich texture and ambient lighting. Raw and textured timbers, bronze, antiqued brass and copper, marbles and a monochrome palette created a truly beautiful and welcoming space for the client to call home. The kitchen of this impressive stucco fronted property benefits from impressively high ceilings, beautiful ornate cornicing and a ceiling rose with a fireplace as the central feature. The client wanted to adapt this stately room into a large kitchen and dining area to suit their lifestyle. In addition they wanted to incorporate their love of modern materials like metal, timber and marble while still ensuring it functioned efficiently. To maximise the seating space, Roselind Wilson Design placed a stunning marble table in the space of a beautiful bay window. The remainder of the space was designed with a large island to accommodate the hobs and downdraft extractors while a breakfast bar allows for comfortable socialising when cooking.

and was completely trusting of Roselind Wilson Design to marry the look with their style. In this, the guest bathroom, the walls were clad with Calacatta Gold marble, very luxurious and with a striking warmth to the gold veining. As the ceilings were very high in the bathroom, the marble was clad only ¾ of the ceiling height with the area above painted. The vanity basin is constructed out of the same marble encased in a teak unit to complement the gold veining and the brassware is finished in vintage brass to complete the “sophisticated industrial” look. The bespoke mirror above the vanity reflects the storage unit behind which was carefully constructed of doors using a veneer of the same marble to obtain a seamless look.
Fitted with Gaggenau appliances and wine fridge, the kitchen is luxurious. An island unit has been manufactured in state-of-the-art laminate to ensure a slick contemporary look that is extremely durable while the sink is located in a bespoke unit behind the island. It's more of a freestanding furniture piece than fitted kitchen joinery. Again, the sweeping dimensions of the units add to the overscaled proportions of the room and provide a sense of presence. Roselind Wilson Design designed every detail of this kitchen and worked closely with Kitchen Architecture to ensure a truly bespoke Poggenpohl product. The island itself faces the fireplace, the surround of which was designed and made bespoke for this room using honed nero marquina marble. This entire wall was painted in graphite grey by Marston & Langinger to contrast with the rest of the rooms that are painted in grey. Lighting was essential in the space and the requirement was to have dimmable levels of light. The oversized ceiling required an equally imposing light and the array pendant by CTO Lighting was the obvious choice. With gold lining to emit a warm glow over the island and breakfast bar, it stands as a strong central feature to the entire room. The bathroom design was organic as the client loves natural stone
81 NH_Oct16_Roselind Design.indd 81
The shower area extends the entire width of the bathroom which includes the window. This area has been clad in an intricately patterned ceramic tile in gold print supplied by Made A Mano. A bespoke metal frame was designed to run along the edge of the shower screen and between the marble and ceramic tile to provide a clean break between finishes. Roselind Wilson Design opted to paint the window frame in black too to finish the look. The effect is slick yet impactful and pays tribute to the attention to detail applied by Roselind and her team on every project. u

t's been a real pleasure to watch this fledgling London brand take flight over the course of 2016, with mama and founder Louise Shill beginning to corner the market in classic styles. The aim of Young Soles was always to take timeless footwear shapes – the fisherman sandal, the Derby, the desert boot – and reimagine them for the contemporary child, using the best materials and a grown-up's eye for good design to improve upon the (let's be honest) tacky and underperforming stuff so often found in kids' shoe shops. Designed in east London and made with care in Europe, the shoes are hardwearing yet supple, so that they mould to little ones' growing feet. They also feature a stylistic simplicity and attention to detail (even when enlivened by all-over zebra patterns or Libertyprint laces) that ensures they run streets ahead of the competition. In short, we're big fans. And so should you be. u

As soon as he receives his homework he gets straight down to it without being told, and he would never have done this before. He not only remembers the things he has been taught in school, but he is remembering other details as well. He completed a French test that he hadn’t revised for and he received 19/24. Before it would have been 1 or 2/24, which was very demoralising for him. Accomplishing this sort of result in English would be a massive improvement for him, but in French…! Whatever he turns his hand to is done perfectly and to a high standard. He will pick up a book and read it now, whereas he never used to read anything unless it was a comic or picture book, and he loves school now. ife was such a struggle for my 12-year-old son, Jack. Everything was a burden to him and we felt we must get him ahead in life. He suffered from very poor memory, poor reading and comprehension, low selfesteem and confidence, as well as high levels of anxiety and frustration. He was getting nowhere at school and we had to physically dress him to get him there. He would become upset in class because he couldn’t do the work and didn’t understand it. He was always very frustrated and highly-strung. A main source of his frustration was that he didn’t seem to have the ability to retain what he had learned. Then we came across ALC, a revolutionary eye therapy for situations

We told him that 10 days wasn’t long to change his whole life. About four days after treatment we started observing improvements. His spelling improved drastically – he has surprised himself and his teachers by not only remembering the work set in class but also knowing how to spell hard words that he had never spelt in his life before. He has jumped a lot of levels in maths and is coming home every day telling me that he has got really good marks in his work. This is so rewarding! Since we completed the programme he has just been leaping forward in all his work. He definitely concentrates

Mind your grammar What's going to happen now that the prime minister is lifting the ban on selective schools? Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e
F
ew things start an argument quite like the subject of grammar schools. When it was revealed during the summer that the new Prime Minister is lifting the 18-year ban on grammars, she was accused by of “opening old wounds” by a Martin Stephen, previously high master of St Paul’s School. On the one side there are those who think grammar schools are brilliant agents of social mobility, providing bright children with the opportunity to excel, whatever their background. For others they are the opposite, a failed experiment in social selection that merely entrenches advantage and privilege for the few at the expense of the many. Stephen said: “If you condemn 70 per cent of the school populace to sump schools you create a vehicle not for social mobility but rather a mass uprising.” It is a hugely symbolic for Theresa May – herself the product of a grammar school – to lift the ban imposed by Tony Blair nearly two decades ago. Many in the Conservative Party have campaigned for the return of grammar schools for years. Grammar schools grew from the 1940s to the 1970s, and by the mid-1960s, 1,300 grammars were educating a quarter of all pupils (and their pupils won half of all Oxbridge places). The best were (and still are) bastions of rigorous academia, where Latin and Greek were learnt as standard and poems learnt by rote. But politics turned against grammars, and in 1976 the Education Act compelled local authorities to introduce comprehensive education. Yet existing grammars still dominate the league tables, often outclassing top private schools, and tiger mothers fight for places with Hunger Games-style ferocity. Yet it is this issue of selection, the punishing 11+ entrance exam taken to
Many in the
CONSERVATIVE PARTY have CAMPAIGNED for the return OF GRAMMARS FOR YEARS grab a grammar place, that makes these schools repellent for their opponents. Critics say grammar schools cream off only the brightest (or the most tutored) and to introduce more will only encourage the academic arms race that already blights the private sector, and leaves no room for less privileged children. Evidence collected by the Sutton Trust, a charity that works to improve social mobility through education, found that less than three per cent of grammar school entrants are entitled to free school meals, a marker of
87 EDUCATION2.indd 87
social disadvantage – compared with 18 per cent of English children overall. But for politicians like cabinet ministers David Davis and Liam Fox, the answer to this disparity is to create more grammar schools. They are the founders of pressure group Conservative Voice which wants to see a new grammar school system for the 21st century, and has already drawn up plans for 20 new grammars created initially in deprived areas of Britain to boost “choice, opportunity for all and aspiration”. As David Cameron’s government made it a requirement that all new state schools should be free schools, a type of academy set up by community groups or chains, it is possible that any new grammars will take the form of free schools. But free schools are also nonselective, so entrance tests for grammar free schools would have to change. It is also likely that new grammars will follow the model of free schools like the London Academy of Excellence (LAE), a very successful selective sixth-form college in Newham that has already sent eight pupils to Oxford and Cambridge. A Westminster source said: “What they [the government] want is to introduce a LAE, but for 11- to 18-year-olds.” But for many senior educationalists, including outgoing Ofsted inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw, any sort of return to grammar education is not the answer. Many have said that they believe the government should press on with the root and branch reforms of A-levels and GCSEs, instigated by Michael Gove, continue with academisation and widen access to technical training. Tony Little, a former headmaster of Eton, said the debate about expanding the number of grammars was the “wrong one to have” and urged a focus on quality instead. “Beware the nostalgic comfort of a golden age. Held up to the light, most golden ages do not glister, they prove to be made of base metal.” ◆

ometimes in life you’ve just got to get away. Whether you need a break from your job or simply the stress of everyday life, R+R is, inevitably, necessary. Switching off so entirely is difficult but it’s also beautiful. Waking up with nothing to do but eat, swim and sunbathe is, quite possibly, the only way to avoid burning out. The thing is, when you need to switch off everything has to be easy and it doesn’t get much easier than a week spent at the Regnum Carya on Turkey's south coast. Here, from the moment my friend and I step off the plane in Antalya and into a Jag, everything is taken care of. The huge hotel and its grounds, including the Carya championship golf course, cost an incredible 300 million euros to build and the fact that no expense has been spared is so blatantly obvious. While the hotel itself is
jaw-droppingly ostentatious, our private villa, located a short buggy ride away, is an absolute dream with two bathrooms, a living room, walk-in wardrobe, bedroom and two bathrooms just for us. Initially built for the congressmen visiting Turkey for the G20, it’s really, really hard to imagine Obama and Putin discussing world politics in such a peaceful place. With our own swimming pool outside our bedroom doors, our mornings consist of rolling out and into the water before heading over to the main building for breakfast. As an all-inclusive affair, each meal is served buffet style and with an entire hall full with different foods, we over-fill our plates daily. Turkish dishes include menemen - egg scrambled with tomato, green peppers and oregano and borek - flaky pastry parcel filled with feta, spinach and chorizo. If you like, dinner can be a more extravagant affair with the hotel also containing five other restaurants. For a little extra, we eat at the Japanese

THE HIGH LIFE Dubai’s holiday appeal continues to grow and it’s not hard to see why Wo r d s r o s e n o e l
T
here was a time when Dubai could have been classed as purely a business destination; that time has passed and tourism is on the rise year after year, with the UK practically leading the charge as the fourth highest market for visitors to Dubai after India, Saudi Arabia and Oman. Among those drawn to the winter sun and the high rise architecture are the Beckhams and Beyoncé who have chosen Dubai as their winter sun getaway. There is also the fact that despite Dubai’s population of 2.5 million, the amount of people entering the country each year reaches from between eight and twelve million. So, what is the appeal? What draws the hordes of holidaymakers that previously chose the south of France or the Costa del Sol over this desert destination? Well, it could be the immense number of international events that are happening there; this winter alone will see the DP World Tour Championship (a prestigious golfing event) take place in November as well as the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens and an impressive New Year’s fireworks display. But for those looking for a more traditional family holiday, choices of four to five star hotels are innumerable. The JA Jebel Ali Beach hotel features 231 rooms and suites

Although a plus for those with a passion for the greens, the hotel can also rival Caribbean resorts (a considerably further and more expensive plane ride away) for beautiful, palm-lined beaches. Those looking to relax can go for a treatment at the spa and afterwards lounge by one of the two swimming pools the hotel has to offer. Acclaimed restaurants and top of the range sporting facilities are also a short walk away while parents looking to find a little alone time can book children into one of the many kids’ clubs that the hotel offers. The rooms themselves are equipped with every mod-con imaginable and decorated in a timeless style that is miles away from the brash glamour that is often associated with Dubai hotels and resorts.

TRAVEL / GULF AIR
Bright Future Gulf Air announces orders of 45 aircraft with Boeing and Airbus at the Bahrain International Air Show 2016 Wo r d s a b s o l u t e ly
S
ince their great success sponsoring the Bahrain Grand Prix in April this year, Gulf Air has gone from strength to strength. Most recently, the Kingdom of Bahrain’s national carrier has announced, on the first day of the Bahrain International Airshow 2016, restructured orders of 45 aircraft with Boeing and Airbus in deals worth a combined total of USD7.6 billion. This order will be made up of 6 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, 17 Airbus A321neo and 12 Airbus A320neo aircraft. The delivery of these aircraft will begin in the second quarter of 2018 and come as a result of extensive negotiations with both aircraft manufacturers. The restructured orders will simplify Gulf Air’s future widebody fleet to Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and make sure that its future narrow-body fleet will mostly focus on A320 neo Family aircraft. So, what does all this exciting news mean for you and me? Most importantly it means that Gulf Air will have the capability to expand and begin to realise the airline’s extensively studied future network requirements. It also ensures that Gulf Air will maintain one of the youngest fleets in the region while building upon its award-winning reliability and on-time performance. Commenting on the agreement, Gulf Air Chief Executive Officer Mr. Maher Salman Al Musallam, said, “As long-

standing partners, Boeing and Airbus have understood the challenges faced by Gulf Air and embraced our future looking strategy. I am delighted that we have arrived at mutually agreeable solutions to restructure our previous orders with aircraft that are more fuel-efficient, modernised, reliable and which, at the same time, allow Gulf Air to operate our wide and narrow-body fleet at lower operating costs. This is in-line with our mission to put the airline firmly on a path towards long term commercial sustainability.” As Mr. Maher commented later on, “the airline’s future looks increasingly promising.” gulfair.com

our tenants are relocating from overseas. These tenants are particularly fond of properties that have numerous period features such as sash windows and high ceilings etc.
when moving are particularly keen for the property to have a modern and pristine bathroom. This has become an area of extreme importance and could be what it takes to secure a tenant.

e have had an extremely busy few weeks, with properties across all price brackets in high demand. This has ranged from studios and one bedroom apartments to high end, luxury properties. We are also seeing high numbers of existing tenants renewing their tenancies. Demand has been particularly good for premium rental homes. We are finding that period townhouses priced from £1,500 to £2,000 per week,
Demand has been particularly good for premium rental luxury apartments up to £2,000 per week, notably in Belgravia, and high end two bedroom apartments generally from £650 to £1,250 per week are letting particularly well. The student market has also been very strong this autumn Ω most students have good budgets and typically have been choosing one bedroom apartments in smart, newbuild developments for around £600 - £650 per week. u

We went above and beyond by allowing the tenant to order various items of furniture to our office and in turn we delivered them to the flat for them ready for their move in. In the evening Queens Park is a hub of activity as runners stretch their legs and bootcamp classes group together for a workout. We just rented 19 Galton Street which is stunning. I’m also a big fan of 74 Chesterton Road and The Mews at 24 Rainham Road as well as the Ink Building. MARKET PREDICTIONS FOR THE COMING MONTHS?
Business as usual – I don’t foresee any major ups and down as North Kensington is always popular whatever time of year. The end of summer/start of autumn market is always a busy time for us. u

aving lived, worked and raised a family in St John’s Wood, the area is very much my home. Although born in Tehran, my family moved here when I was fifteen: I transferred from The American Community School in Tehran to The American Community School in London, so there was a degree of continuity. My parents settled in St John’s Wood and I enjoyed growing up here: the amount of greenery is something that I still find hugely appealing. St John’s Wood was once part of the Great Forest of Middlesex, a private hunting ground for King Henry VIII in the 16th century. But it wasn’t until the end of the 18th century that residential development started to appear under the ownership of the Eyre family. The then relatively inexpensive villas, tree-lined avenues and large gardens, attracted those who valued the rural calm, despite it being in an urban region, and it quickly became home to many authors, artists, scientists, and philosophers. As a young woman I was not sure of the career I wished to
Regent's Park, one of the most beautiful open spaces in central London, is a key draw pursue. I was fortunate and quickly secured a temporary post at estate agents Park Lord & Co. I was bitten by the property bug and offered a permanent position. Park Lord & Co were bought by Beauchamp Estates in 1987 and some 30 years on, I am still excited by my work. As prices in ultra prime central London have continued to increase this has brought into their own the immediately surrounding areas and non more so than the North West sector: Marylebone, Regents Park, St John’s Wood, Swiss Cottage, Maida Vale and Hampstead, all have found increased appeal. Regents Park, one of the most beautiful open spaces in central London, is a key draw close to the West End, while slightly further north is Hampstead Heath. While not a public green space Lords – home to the Marylebone Cricket Club is another draw for some.
The last few years have seen substantial price increases in the area, particularly in Avenue Road and Hamilton Terrace. This is in part due to the fact that a number of the 5,000+ square foot houses have managed to secure permission to increase their size, either by knocking down the existing property, or by adding basement areas with leisure facilities. The area offers a wide range of residential property, including apartments, large and small, lateral and duplex, purpose built and conversions, as well as houses of all sizes, which is great as it means that whether a buyer is looking for a home for one, a family home of eight, or anything in between, there will be options. While the majority of property is period, there are a small number of select new build developments, the most significant of which is 50 St Edmund’s Terrace, notable for its luxury facilities and exceptional location. A wide range of people are drawn to the area, all of whom like the village feel and the fact that they are never too far from a park, transport links and the choice of schools. These facts help ensure that the market is generally busy, with the current period no exception. ◆

SCHOOLS Cost of getting into six of the best
O
n the face of it parents in London’s central boroughs should have a wide choice of state secondary schools to send their children to – there are 112 secondary schools for them to choose from. But of these only 23 are 'Outstanding' and 20 'Good', so competition is white hot for these better establishments and consequently only two thirds of parents get their first choice. To try and allay furious parents and balance the system, most schools work hard to filter applications by prioritising some children over others. These often include those with disabilities, particular religions (for faith schools), academic ability and the most controversial one… proximity to the school. But not all do this. For example, The Grey Coat Hospital in Pimlico where Michael Gove famously sent his daughter in 2014, does not have a catchment area. Parents who want to send their children to an 'Outstanding' state school in central London may have one choice left – to move close to their target school and hope to fall within its catchment area, a trend that has made homes within these areas 25% more expensive, according to Savills. So how much might these homes cost? Here we look at six of central London’s 'Outstanding' schools and the property markets in their catchment areas. u

PROPERTY AROUND THE SCHOOLS:
This is a market for flat buyers, which start at £300,000 for a one bedroom and rise to £2.65 million for a luxury three bedroom. The bulk of two bedroom apartments for sale are between £600,000 and £750,000. Three bedroom flat on the Walworth Road, £1.25m with KFH London Bridge (020 3792 2689)
PIMLICO ACADEMY
Where: Pimlico SW1V 3AT Last inspected: 2010 Pupils: 2,000 Gender: Mixed Type: Academy
PROPERTY AROUND THE SCHOOLS:
Pimlico Academy has a wide catchment area which is approximately a three mile circle around the school, but the schools’ own pupil heat map reveals that most come from Pimlico and Vauxhall. Despite being in the heart of London, it’s largely a house market ranging from £700,000 for a post-war three bedroom terraced house between Kennington and Vauxhall to around £4.5 million for a period two bedroom terrace near Sloane Square. But prices quickly escalate to tens of millions for the larger houses off Eaton Terrace.
ST MARYLEBONE CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL
Where: Marylebone, W1U 5BA Last inspected: 2014 Pupils: 33 Gender: Mixed Type: Free school
PROPERTY AROUND THE SCHOOLS:
This is an expensive catchment to join. Prices start at £600,000 for a two bedroom flat to £5 million for a luxury penthouse. But the median price is around £1.5 million for a two bed example.

FAMOUS PLACES London hides a plethora of celebrity homes. These are the most recent to come on the market
FAB FLAT FOR GEORGE AND RINGO
fter just one hit single in 1963 - Please Please Me – The Beatles were so famous that their screaming fans made it difficult to use hotels as a base in London. So manager Brian Epstein suggested George and Ringo should move into his apartment block, and the two bandmates rented a party pad in Whaddon House near Harrods. The block witnessed some legendary parties, one star-studded bash at which all four Beatles partied with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Judy Garland. Later the next year, The Beatles famously met at the flat before heading to Buckingham Palace to receive their MBEs from the Queen. A three bedroom apartment in the block is now on the market for £3.5m. It’s been given a makeover and has an open-plan reception and kitchen with under-lit and mirrored bar area, and decked balcony through sliding glass double doors. The master bedroom has an en suite, with its own dressing room. Harrods Estates 0207 225 6506; harrodsestates.com

London, he hopes to forget his troubles by immersing himself in writing a crime novel in the south of France. The two bedroom garden flat where the fictional writer lived with his girlfriend, until he found out she was having an affair with his brother, is available to Firth fans. The Grade II listed Chiswick house was originally built in 1879 for the English watercolour painter and lithographer Joseph Nash and the layout is still centred around the original artist’s studio which is now a big open-plan dining room with large window and high ceilings. The two bedroom conversion with garden and garage is up for sale at £1.5m. Johnd Wood 0208 166 1792; johndwood.co.uk

ROOM IN NEED OF A VIEW
ovelist EM Forster had five novels published in his lifetime, most of them movie material. They were made into films by Merchant-Ivory - A Room with a View, Howards End and Maurice – while David Lean directed A Passage to India. Forster kept a London flat from 1925, although he spent much of his life with his widowed mother Lily in Surrey. He moved from Bloomsbury to Arlington Park Mansions in October 1939, partly to escape central London following the outbreak of war, and also to be closer to his friend and lover Bob Buckingham. Forster spent one or two days a week at his top-floor flat. The thrifty writer used the flat as a pied-à-terre until his death in 1970. A one bedroom, ground floor maisonette in the building is now up for sale at £525,000. This blue plaque property opposite Turnham Green has been recently renovated and has its own private access. albums during the late 1980s. But since 1992, Weller has been a solo artist, releasing albums every two or three years while almost constantly touring. Anyone in their forties or older will remember when he put his legendary energies into supporting the Labour party, usually on-stage with the other Red Wedge headliners such as Billy Bragg, the late Kirsty MacColl and The Communards. But some of his old values have remained. Weller rarely embraces the flummery of celebrity and leads a relatively normal existence. This is his old home on Cartbridge Close in the Surrey village of Send. Weller lived here during the noughties while working on his fifth solo album, Heliocentric and later on his chart topping live album, Days of Speed. The house is for sale with Knight Property Services for £625,000. The agent says the integral garage was converted by Weller into a soundproof practice room. BRITISH DESIGNERS 10 reasons why London’s a design leader
L
ondon was recently heralded as the ‘design capital of the world’ by The New York Times. And every year the London Design Festival pulls in 350,000 people from 60 countries to see one of the most vibrant creative sectors in the capital – along with fashion and film – according to the Mayor of London. This is particularly true in the world of interior design. There are now dozens of companies and interior designers offering the capital’s prime homeowners a huge range of styles. These include high profile names such as the queen of interior design, Kelly Hoppen, along with Abigail Ahearn, Tara Bernard, the Candy brothers and Oliver Burns as well as older names such as Anouska Hempel and Nicky Haslam. But it’s not just private houses that get luxury makeovers. London’s plethora of new homes developers also now dip
into this palette of talent to give their apartments ‘the look’. Here we reveal some of the best for sale at the moment. u
SQUIRE & PARTNERS
The company’s been busy recently at Chelsea Barracks, South Bank Place and One Tower Bridge but we like this more boutique effort off Clapham Common on Macaulay Road. There the company has designed three townhouses, one of which is home to the company’s founder and senior partner Michael Square, while the other two are being sold privately. The six bed houses are modern on the outside, although inside they take their design cues from the Victorian houses that surround them. More information: squireandpartners.com

private gardens in the capital so being a high-profile landscape designer here is always going to attract attention. And that’s exactly what Brighton-based garden designer Andy Sturgeon has done after winning a Best in Show gong at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show for his Jurassicinspired Telegraph Garden. But home buyers can also get the Sturgeon look if they buy an apartment at Lillie Square. The development, which comprises over 800 properties, is having its large communal gardens designed by Andy and work is already under way on the greenery. More information: lilliesquare.com
LOUISE WICKSTEED, 1508 LONDON
This multi-disciplinary practice based in Pimlico works at the high end of the London interior world and its latest work, Project Pearl, is a four bedroom Belgravia mansion on Chesham Place currently for sale with Savills at £17.9 million. “The impressive scale and potential light of the principal rooms struck me as soon as I visited the property,” says Louise. “Throughout the design process we wanted to work with and enhance these elements. By re-introducing sympathetic period detailing but keeping everything in a consistent palette.” More information: 1508london.com
FIONA BARRATT AND BOWER JAMES BRINDLEY
Next time you’re near Millbank pop in to the show apartment at Riverwalk, a development of 116 apartments overlooking the Thames. The show home has been designed by a partnership of two British talents, designer Fiona Barratt and design firm Bower James Brindley. Fiona is a well known interior expert, a member of the Barratt property dynasty and also the wife of footballer Sol Campbell. Consultancy Bower James Brindley comes hotfoot from its most recent work; designing the interiors of Landmark Place. More information: riverwalk.co.uk
