ecently a close friend of mine lost his last remaining grandparent, at the grand old age of 97. He was naturally devastated, but listening to his tales gave me a feeling that somewhere along the line I had missed out. After all, I was eight when my last grandparent departed this fair and pleasant land. I don't remember a great deal about any of my grandparents. My Grandad Kebble was the last to go and I remember visiting him in hospital, but by then he thought he was back in the Second World War and frankly I was terrified. The other three? Not much at all. Which is why I was intrigued to hear about Herts local, Dhilon Solanki, and his Story Locker venture, where we can record our life story to pass on down through the generations. It certainly makes a unique Christmas present, the perfect precursor to our mini festive gift guide. Thanks for the memories, indeed.

HE LIVES CLOSE TO RICKMANSWORTH
Q Tell us about the inspiration
behind Story Locker…
A Story Locker was inspired by my Mum,
Nina, who passed away in 1995 aged 50, with Acoustic Neuroma (a type of brain tumour). She never met her grandchildren, and I always think about how she would have loved getting to know them and telling them her stories. Recently, my eight-year-old son, Kian, had been asking about his grandma, and all I had to share with him were my memories, along with some old photos and VHS tapes. Precious as those are, I’d have given anything for my sons to hear her voice and listen to her life story. It made me think how my Mum could have captured her story in today’s digital world. I decided to set up an interview for my Dad so he could tell their story and have it recorded as a podcast. When I saw my son’s face as he listened to it play back, I knew we had created something special.
GET TO KNOW…

Q How does Story Locker work? A It’s a really simple process. You choose
your package (a 45, 60 or 90-minute podcast interview), your category (Life Story, Wedding, Milestone Celebration) and your professional interviewer from a team of over 20. You then record your podcast from the comfort of your home. We’ll send you all the equipment you need in a special branded box, including a top-quality podcast mic and headphones, which you get to keep. After we have professionally edited your recording, overlaid it with beautiful music, your personal Story Locker will be created online, along with any photos you wish to add.
Q Do you come across many
emotional stories?
A Absolutely. It’s incredible to hear some
people’s journey, the challenges they have faced during their life and the resilience

they have shown to come out the other end. We’ve had customers who said the Story Locker experience was quite therapeutic and gave them the space and encouragement to say things to their loved ones that they never had before. Q How do you see Story Locker evolving? A I want Story Locker to be one of the first
things people think of when it comes to personalised gifts. At the moment people often see podcasts as something they listen to passively. With our platform, I want people to become active creators, building a digital legacy for themselves and their loved ones, and being able to share and store special memories with friends and family for generations to come. We are now also trialling a new corporate package for founders and company leaders to talk about their business in a face-to-face podcast interview in a professional studio.
“It's incredible to hear some people's journey, the challenges they have faced during their life” is a real passion project and it’s difficult to switch off when you’re trying to make it the best it can be. I’m constantly looking for ways to achieve a better work/life balance, but I realise there will always be times when this goes out of the window. I’m very lucky to have a fantastically supportive family. My wife Birva is my rock who backs me every step of the way, while the enthusiasm of my sons Kian and Remy keeps me going. In the past I’ve had to miss some gatherings due to my business commitments, which has upset extended family members, but I know it’s not always possible to keep everyone happy all the time.
Q Do you have a favourite family spot in Hertfordshire? A Yes, we love going to Aldenham Country Park. You usually find us there every Sunday morning, walking through the forest and seeing the animals. The kids love it and it gives us time to relax as a family and – for me especially – the chance to get some valuable exercise. Q Where is your favourite restaurant? A I have a few, and it depends on the mood
I’m in and the type of cuisine. If it’s Pan Asian, I love visiting Roka in the West End or, if we want to stay local, we’re big fans of Tamarind Thai in Rickmansworth.
Q Is Story Locker an ideal Christmas
gift, offering something different?
A Definitely! Story Locker makes a great
Q How does your family life fit in
Christmas gift for a loved one and can be bought between a group of friends. With more people looking to buy experiences and personalised presents rather than generic products, it delivers on both counts, plus the branded box means there’s still something impressive to unwrap around the tree. Christmas is a time for family and friends to come together and make memories, so what better way to capture those special festive moments, than a podcast that can live on forever.
A To be honest, it’s not easy. Story Locker

Joyful return
Cirque du Soleil’s iconic Alegria is back in 2024 with a brand new reinterpretation
C
irque du Soleil returns to London to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its internationally acclaimed classic Alegría from 11 January at the iconic Royal Albert Hall. This limited series of performances will mark the European Premiere of the revival production of Alegría, a creative reinterpretation of the 1994 touring show in a whole new light. First premiered in 1994, Alegría has become one of the most beloved Cirque du Soleil shows by mesmerising over 14 million spectators in 255 cities across 40 countries until the end of its 19year world tour in 2013. Its original production performed five successful engagements in London from 1998, including four residencies at the Royal Albert Hall, making London the city Alegría has visited the most in the world. In 2019, Alegría was revived and creatively reinterpreted in a new light, ensuring that all its components – stage direction, music, acrobatics, sets, costumes, lighting and makeup designs – would be as inspiring for today’s audiences as they were at the time of the original creation. Re-energised by an international cast of 62 acrobats, clowns, musicians and singers, Alegría remains timeless and imbued with a joyous magical feeling. “We are thrilled to be bringing the revival of our classic Alegría to the Royal Albert Hall, the most popular Cirque du Soleil production ever in London with over 625,000 spectators across five visits. We are proud to have concluded an additional five-year agreement with the Royal Albert Hall for the presentation of our touring shows,” says Duncan J. Fisher, President – Touring Shows, Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group. Undeniably the most iconic Cirque du Soleil production, Alegría (‘joy’ in Spanish) is an all-time classic reimagined for a new generation to fall in love with. An immersive
“Expect an international cast of 62 acrobats, clowns, musicians and singers”
experience, Alegría whisks audiences away to a mystical world sprinkled with visual poetry and acrobatic extravagance. At the heart of a once-glorious kingdom that has lost its king, Alegría witnesses the power struggle at play between the old order and the youth in their quest for hope and renewal. As the court jester clumsily tries to take the throne, a growing desire for change emerges from the street to shake the status quo and bring joy to the world. With its unforgettable soundtrack, exciting acrobatics, surreal costume designs, vibrant set and playful humour, Alegría touches the soul and lives up to its global reputation of quintessential Cirque du Soleil spectacle. Cirque du Soleil started its muchloved annual residency at the Royal Albert Hall in 1996, becoming a staple of entertainment at the famous London venue as it becomes a permanent big top for over two months each year. cirquedusoleil.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

the worst case scenario helps, so that I’ve always got an action plan in my head. Q What do you like to do to relax? A Sleep! When I can. To be honest, even when
I’m not here, I’m always thinking about work.
Q Before coming to Dylan’s,
where were you working? A I don’t really come from a traditional cheffing background. I worked for a few chain restaurants here and up north. I knew the chains weren’t for me and I wanted to get into something more serious so I began working in fine dining at a hotel that had 2 AA Rosettes. After a while, I found out Dylan’s was hiring a sous chef so I jumped at the chance. I’ve been here five years now (head chef for over a year) and I’m absolutely loving it. Q Describe Dylan’s to someone
who’s never been before…
A It’s a relaxed vibe. We’re trying to achieve
simplicity: food that you can connect with. If you go to a fine dining restaurant, you might feel out of your comfort zone, but here at Dylan’s, you can eat and relax. We try to put familiar things on the menu that we ourselves would want to eat at home: classics like scotch eggs, fish, steak, all done really well with fantastic ingredients.
Q What’s been your proudest
Q Do you cook a lot for friends and
family when you’re “off duty”?
achievement to date? A It would definitely be getting a place into the Good Food Guide. It was so unexpected. Also getting named in the Top 100 Gastropubs was a huge moment as it was something we had been working tirelessly towards. This year: we’re aiming for top 50!
A Yes and no. Sometimes, I just like to switch
Q Is there anyone else on the Hertfordshire
Q What’s your mum’s best meal? A Curry. That’s what we grew up
food scene that you have a lot of respect for? A I love THOMPSON, for a special occasion. I also really like The Plough in Sleapshyde, as they’re trying out a lot of fun things in the fine dining space. The guys at The Silver Cup in Harpenden are smashing it with some great food. Oh and I love to pop into The Boot on my break sometimes for their amazing tacos! Q Do you ever feel pressure? A Yes. I’m the type of person who always
imagines the worst possible thing that could happen. But I think planning out
off and I’d rather not cook. I think my friends and family find it a lot of pressure cooking for me. I’m currently living with my parents and my mum does a lot of the cooking. She’s always been the main source of inspiration for me; she’s the person that taught me how to cook.
with. Alongside all the classics.
Q Why is Dylan’s called Dylan’s? A The restaurant is actually named after our
owner Sean’s chocolate labrador Dylan. He sadly passed away a few years ago, but he was a big part of the pub and used to come in every day. Sean was struggling to come up with a name for a while and then someone randomly said: what about “Dylan’s”? And it worked.
dylanskingsarms.com
Q Why do you think Dylan’s is standing the test of time in a really difficult period for hospitality and pubs? A Like any business in the hospitality industry, we are finding things difficult because of rising costs. There aren’t many independent gastro places within the city centre of St Albans, and I think we’ve built up a good reputation. We have got a lot of regulars who say this is their favourite place to come to eat. Q How do you find inspiration for your
menus? How often do they change?
A We try to change our menu every
month. Some favourites stay on the menu permanently, such as our prime rib sharer because our regulars would notice straight away if we took it off! We try to change depending on seasonal produce and we have daily special boards. O TL E U LY T E LY. A B SAOB LS U m aLgOaNzD i nOeNs

SPOTLIGHT
The art of great gin Ginagain
R
ick Allen, Ginagain's founder and artist, had a flavour profile figured out for a gin almost 20 years ago. Growing up on the edge of California's Central Valley where most of the fruit and citrus farms can be found, oranges were always in abundance. When he fell in love with gin, while travelling in England in the 90s, he decided to put the two together and intially created a compound gin for friends and family. It wasn't until Covid lockdown, when there was an abundance of time and an orange tree in the front yard in his house in Santa Cruz California, that he started to perfect the recipe. Working with an independant distillery in the UK in February 2022 saw Ginagain launch its first edition, a tiny batch run in a copper pot still. A true London Dry gin, the imported organic Californian orange peel shines through like a hot summer's day in the Central Valley without the overly sweet notes in some of the flavoured gin on the market. Recently awarded 93 points by the International Drinks Specialists, they reviewed Ginagain as inviting, bright and open nose with a balance between green herbs, spices, roots and fruity notes. There’s a hint of floral citrus and some lovely juniper too – it's complex and elegant on the nose. What's more, it's well priced at £39, so this should one for all gin lovers. ginagain.com

WINTER FLORALS
When it comes to winter wedding florals, there's a misconception that you have to stick solely to the traditional palette of deep reds and evergreens. However, we've seen a delightful shift in recent years as couples explore the versatility of neutral flowers during this magical season. Crisp whites can evoke a pristine and elegant atmosphere, reminiscent of freshly fallen snow, while deeper neutrals like dusty mauve, muted greys, or soft blush tones can add a touch of warmth and sophistication. These neutral florals seamlessly integrate with winter's muted colour palette, infusing a sense of understated elegance into every bouquet, centrepiece, and floral arrangement.
LONG SLEEVE WEDDING DRESSES
For a winter wedding, long sleeve wedding dresses are not just a fashion statement, they are a practical and stylish choice. The longer sleeves not only add an element of timeless elegance to the bride's ensemble, but also provide an extra layer of warmth, keeping her comfortable in cooler temperatures. The allure of a long sleeve gown lies in its ability to strike a balance between classic charm and modern sophistication, making it a perfect fit for a winter wonderland wedding. Whether adorned with delicate lace, intricate beading, or sheer fabrics, these dresses capture the essence of the season, creating a cosy and enchanting bridal look that is both breathtaking and weather-appropriate.
AN ‘EVERGREEN’ VENUE
When planning a winter wedding wedding, your choice of venue plays a pivotal
part in creating the perfect, enchanting atmosphere. It's not just about the big day; it's about capturing the magic too. Choosing a venue that has a striking outdoor area all year round is ideal, evergreen trees and a lovely outdoor space is a photographer's dream come true. Those evergreens, with their lush green branches, pop beautifully against the wintery backdrop, giving your photos that wow factor. But it's not just about the looks – it's about the feel too. Being outdoors in the crisp wintery weather adds a magical touch to your wedding, whether you're saying 'I do' surrounded by a light dusting of snow or basking in the glow of a winter sunset. Don't miss out on those outdoor photos.
WINTER TABLE DECOR
When it comes to creating a captivating winter wedding tablescape, incorporating wintery table decor is a must, and nothing
quite captures the season's charm like natural elements and rich, inviting colours. Think pine cones, those little treasures of the forest, sprinkled among your table settings, bringing an earthy, rustic touch to your decor. Rich hues like deep reds, forest greens, and midnight blues add warmth and sophistication to your tables, evoking the cosiness of the season. Together, these elements create a tablescape that not only embodies the magic of winter, but also invites your guests to share in its enchantment. It's a visual feast that complements the hearty winter feast you'll be sharing, making your wedding celebration a truly memorable and immersive experience.
RICH BRIDESMAID DRESSES
When it comes to dressing your bridesmaids for your winter wedding, deep, rich colours and velvet dresses make a stunning choice. These bold and sumptuous hues, like navy blue, emerald green or burgundy, perfectly complement the winter season's romantic and cosy ambiance. Velvet bridesmaid dresses add an extra layer of luxury and warmth to the bridal party ensemble, making your bridesmaids not only look, but also feel like they’re wrapped in winter’s embrace. The soft, lustrous fabric catches the light beautifully and adds a touch of opulence to the overall aesthetic. So, when you're curating your winter wedding vision, consider these deep colours and velvety textures to create a bridal p arty that exudes elegance.

“Winter is the season filled with festivities and celebrations and everybody is ready to let loose” EMBRACE CHRISTMAS DECOR
When selecting your wedding venue, it's a great idea to inquire about their Christmas decorations and schedule. Most venues adorn their spaces with twinkling lights, wreaths, and beautifully decorated Christmas trees during the holiday season. By coordinating your wedding date with these decorations, you can effortlessly incorporate the cosy charm of Christmas into your own wedding decor. This not only reduces the need for additional decor on your part, but also creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that will make your special day even more WINTER CAKE PHOTO BY RAFE ABROOK PHOTOGRAPHY
memorable. It's a delightful way to blend the joy of the holiday season with the love you and your partner share, making your winter wedding a true celebration of both your union and the festivities of the season.
WINTER WEDDING CAKE
Incorporating winter elements into your wedding cake design is a delightful way to infuse seasonal charm. Consider opting for a cake adorned with crisp white fondant that evokes the pristine beauty of freshly fallen snow. Alternatively, you can embrace a rustic, woodland aesthetic by incorporating edible antler motifs as cake toppers or decorations. These winter-inspired elements not only capture the magic of the season, but also add a unique touch to your dessert table. Whether it's a touch of winter's elegance or a nod to its natural beauty, your wedding cake can be a delicious work of art that beautifully complements your winter wonderland celebration.
PARTY THE NIGHT AWAY
Winter weddings bring with them a unique and exciting atmosphere – the perfect time to lean into the party spirit. It's a season filled with festivities and celebrations, and everyone is naturally ready to let loose and have a good time. The anticipation of the holidays, the joy of being with loved ones, and the crisp, invigorating air create an electric energy that's contagious. Whether you're exchanging vows indoors in front of a cosy fireplace or braving the elements for a

The grand finale of a winter wedding deserves nothing less than a touch of enchantment, and what better way to create that magic than with a sparkler exit or a spectacular fireworks display? These dazzling displays of light against the winter night sky provide the perfect ending to a day filled with love and celebration. The sparkler exit casts a warm and romantic glow as you and your partner make your way through a tunnel of well-wishing guests. Alternatively, fireworks add a burst of excitement, painting the sky with vibrant colours and creating a breathtaking spectacle. Both options offer a memorable and Instagramworthy conclusion to your winter wedding, leaving your guests in awe and sending you off into the night in unforgettable style. offleyplace.com

P
know about wedding day hair
lanning your wedding hair can be the most important part of your special day. It’s the image that stays in your heart, mind and soul forever. It’s your time to be that fairytale princess you’ve always dreamt of. Sadly so many people question the importance and cost placed on planning such an important part of your wedding day. You never see photos of cutlery or table centres placed in frames around houses. First and foremost allow your stylist time to plan your wedding hair. This allows you time to access your hair condition, ensuring that it will look glossy and healthy
in preparation for the colour you may wish to achieve. Consider the actual look that will work with your wedding dress and your choice of headdress. In my experience over the years, I have often been requested to achieve a look that doesn’t work with the chosen dress or headdress, and the bride has had to compromise on her choice. Achieving the best colour relies on optimal hair condition. With this in mind always start with working out exactly when the final colour will need to be arranged, generally 10-14 days prior to the wedding day. This allows the colour time to settle and allow for any adjustment. A hair trial run is a must to be carried out prior to the big day, so start with your
hair treatments and style trials as soon as eight months prior to your wedding day. It’s much easier to adapt a suitable head dress to your hair type. For example, if your hair is fine and density is not in abundance, avoid heavy headwear that will need extra grips and fixings, as your hair may not support securing heavy additions. You need to feel confident and comfortable. Nothing more daunting than a slipping tiara! Brides need to consider how wearing their hair so differently for a day can either create confidence, or cause unnecessary stress and anxiety. Work with styles that you feel will hold and remain secure, styles that make you feel a million dollars and shine like a star. If your hair is heavy and coarse, consider smoothing treatments that create hydration and shine, or opt for sleeker styles, as curls may not hold if your hair is too heavy and naturally straight. However, if your hair is coarse and naturally curly then a softer curl would be perfect as this will hold for longer, and would work in harmony with your hair type. For fine hair it is possible to add hair pieces, creating instant volume and length, and is also better for holding curls than naturally fine weaker hair types. If it’s a hair piece you’re opting for, remember to have trials, this allows you time to adjust to wearing heavier hair on your head, as well as a headdress. If you are experiencing any other hair issues and would like to speak in more depth about any hair or scalp concerns please contact me for a private consultation. trishabuller.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

The skin will begin to
feel smoother and tighter after the first treatment and results will continue to improve for up to six months. The skin ageing process happens to everyone, and is a completely natural process. However, it can be very difficult for some people, and make them lose confidence in their appearance. As we get older, the production of collagen and elastin in our bodies slows, causing the common signs of skin ageing, such as fine lines, wrinkles
and a loss of volume in the skin. Collagen and elastin are the proteins that exist within many of the body’s tissues, including the skin, and gives structural support, strength, elasticity and durability to the skin.

The “London Lash Queen”
t’s Friday morning and I’m at Daxita Vaghela’s Beauty Clinic at AthertonCox near Marylebone High Street. Renowned as one of the leading brow and lash experts, Daxita’s client list is like a who’s who of A list celebrities. I’m here for lash extensions, and I confess to Daxita that it’s my first time. She immediately makes me feel at ease, asking me lots of questions – from how much make-up I usually wear, to if I have any special events coming up. I’m off on holiday the next day and want to look doe-eyed (but not so much so, that my lashes look unnatural). We discuss the options, and I decide on curled ‘Classic Lashes.’ I lie down on the bed and close my eyes. While she works, Daxita tells me about how she was the first to bring lash extensions to the UK. Her 20+ year career has been an impressive one, and she is known for being one of the fastest in the business. Synthetic lashes are individually applied to my natural lashes, which, she explains, have a life cycle of about five weeks, so the extensions will just shed as they fall out. The application is totally painless and Daxita is so gentle, I barely feel anything. My natural lashes are quite short and stubby and when I was younger I wouldn’t leave the house without several coats of mascara. I definitely don’t need any eye make-up after Daxita has worked her magic. My lashes have been transformed – almost as if a real-life filter has been applied to my eyes. They are long and soft, gently curled at the edges – opening up my face. On holiday, I swim in the sea, lounge in saunas and steam rooms, and co-sleep with my toddler. My lashes withstand it all and are still going strong when I return. I can see this becoming very addictive. DAXITA VAGHELA New Cavendish Street, Full set classic lashes, £170

it-ups once ruled as the way to tighter abs and a slimmer waistline. Nowadays, classic sit-ups and crunches have fallen out of favour. Instead, Pilates, with exercises using your own body weight to engage and strengthen the muscles, is a much safer and more beneficial alternative. Sit-ups are hard on your back. They push your curved spine against the floor and work your hip flexors, the muscles that run from the thighs to the lumbar vertebrae in the lower back. When the hip flexors are too strong or too tight, they tug on the lower spine, which can create lower back discomfort. Pilates exercises recruit a better balance of muscles on the front, sides, and back of the body than
sit-ups, which target just a few muscles. It’s also low impact, so there’s less stress on our joints. Activities of daily living such as bathing, getting out of bed, or walking, as well as sports and recreational activities, call on your muscles to work together, not in isolation. Sit-ups or crunches strengthen just a few muscle groups. However, through dynamic patterns of movement, with the good core workout like you get in Pilates, the exercises help strengthen the entire set of core muscles you use every day, leaving you with a stronger and more balanced body. Fran Brown has been teaching fitness for 40 years and Pilates for over 20 years and is also a qualified Clinical Personal Fitness Trainer. She specialises in Pilates, remedial Pilates, post
operative and post injury rehabilitation, postural problems, back and joint pain, functional fitness, nutrition and weight management. She now specialises in her own brand of Pilates, ‘The Fran Brown Pilates Method’. After suffering back problems herself, she discovered the wonderful benefits that Pilates can offer in improving, relieving and preventing back pain. She has also undergone a hip replacement, which has greatly increased her knowledge and understanding of post-operative rehabilitation and how Pilates plays such an important part. Feel the HEAT The MD of The Radiator Centre in St Albans on how warming up homes has evolved, hand in hand with design advances By NICK DUGGAN
A
n essential part of the home, radiators have been a common feature in UK houses since the 1950s. A lot has changed since then, however, and with advances in technology, the humble radiator has evolved greatly in terms of functionality, energy efficiency and aesthetics.
MULTI-FUNCTIONAL RADIATORS One recent trend has seen a big increase in radiators that come with accessories such as shelving, hooks and rails. This is a great solution in areas where space might be limited, combining heating elements with storage. These practical accessories can be used for hanging clothes, towels, bags, or other items, while shelves can hold books and decorative items. It also means that the radiator is still a useful feature throughout the year, even when the heating is switched off. The attachments often form part of the design itself and can transform the radiator into a piece of furniture. These multi-functional radiators are a testament to the evolution of heating solutions beyond their basic functionality. They cater to the practical needs of users while enhancing the aesthetics and overall functionality of living spaces. An embodiment of design innovation, these radiators combine both form and function.
ART RADIATORS On the subject of form, another development that has been seen in the world of radiators is that of the art radiator. Radiators are no longer just functional devices; they're increasingly being treated as artistic elements
within interior design. Manufacturers are creating radiators with aesthetically pleasing designs, shapes, and finishes to blend seamlessly with different decor styles. These art radiators can become focal points or even pieces of functional art within a room. Placing an art radiator strategically in a living room, bedroom, or even a hallway can instantly transform the space into a more visually engaging environment. While customers can choose from a series of standard designs, many art radiators also offer customisation options. This level of personalisation ensures that the radiator becomes a true reflection of your style. Some manufacturers also collaborate with renowned designers, artists, and architects to create limited-edition or one-of-a-kind art radiators, adding an extra A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

layer of exclusivity. Art radiators represent a unique intersection between investing in art and the practical needs of the home.
RADIATORS THAT COOL Some of these art radiators also incorporate another very appealing new development – radiators that offer a cooling function as well as heating. These systems, often referred to as "reversible" or "dual-mode" radiators, operate on the principle of heat pumps, which are devices that can move heat from one place to another. In heating mode, a heat pump extracts heat from the outdoor air (even in cold weather) and transfers it indoors to warm up the space. In cooling mode, the process is reversed: the heat pump extracts heat from the indoor air and releases it outside, effectively cooling the indoor environment. The latest dual-mode radiators can switch between heating and cooling modes effortlessly, making them versatile solutions for maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures throughout the year and can even eliminate the need for separate cooling systems. Certain models even incorporate sensors that automatically detect the required function at a given time and adjust accordingly, based on the room's temperature.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
“There are some limited and one of a kind art radiators”
Many of these latest models are designed to work in conjunction with renewable energy sources like heat pumps and solar panels. These hybrid systems optimise energy use by utilising renewable sources when available and switching to conventional heating methods when necessary. Many of them also incorporate Low H2O technology. These low water content radiators respond more quickly to changes in heating requirements, resulting in faster warm-up times and improved energy efficiency. Energy efficiency has become an important consideration for consumer purchasing in recent years and radiators have been continuously evolving to meet growing energy conservation goals and consumer demands for more sustainable heating solutions. Aluminium radiators are fast becoming one of our top sellers, due in part to the contribution that they can have towards a more energy efficient heating set up. I predict these kinds of radiators will only continue to grow in popularity as they fit nicely into the green revolution. o you remember what you were doing in 1978? Grease was the must-see film that year. The Ford Cortina was the UK’s bestselling car. Kate Bush was in the charts with Wuthering Heights. In Spring, 1978, Alison from Whitley Bay visited the Delcor showroom in Newcastle to buy her first sofa. She recalls: “We were impressed by the design, the comfort and the fact the furniture was made for you”. Looking back this time, Alison said “My husband Andy and I had trawled round all the shops in Newcastle. Up until then we had made do with hand-me-downs and secondhand furniture. We didn’t believe in buying cheap items - we saved up (as you did in those days) and then bought something we thought would last.” Here in Northumberland, Delcor has been

creating handmade upholstered furniture – sofas of distinction - to our customers’ individual specifications since 1967. One of our early marketing lines described us as “the manufacturer who sells direct to the customer.” We soon became well known throughout the Northeast. Later, through other showrooms in the UK, Delcor solidified its reputation as a high-quality specialist manufacturer and retailer of the very best furniture. Alison recalls choosing the sofa and a matching chair, and then waiting for them to be made while her lounge was decorated. She had her first child in 1981 and moved to a larger home. She loved the sofa and chair she had but wanted to enlarge the set, so they returned to Delcor to purchase another chair. We have always offered a refurbishment service for older Delcor furniture. People
come back to us to have their wellloved Delcor furniture fully restored. Alison reflected “The suite lasted very well, in 2020 my husband died, Covid came, and life stopped. At the beginning of this year, I decided to redecorate, I realized my wonderful Delcor settee was really looking like it needed renewing as the fabric was starting to show its age.I must admit I won’t need my new sofa bed to last another 45 years but now I’ll have a fantastic piece of furniture to leave to my children knowing it will give many years of good service.” “I was so well received during my visit. I felt like I’d come ‘home’. I knew your products were excellent and really didn’t need any persuasion to think about buying from you again. “Swimming together creates bonds, memories and a sense of togetherness”
LIFE
changer How Origin can set you and your family up for a positive future with an indoor swimming pool
I
n today's fast-paced world, swimming stands out as a golden opportunity to promote physical fitness and valuable life skills in children. Recent research from Griffith University reaffirms that swimming is not just a sport, it’s a life-enhancing experience. The research shows children who engage in swimming from an early age reap a multitude of benefits. This, combined with Origin’s commitment to family values, highlights the significance of introducing children to the world of swimming early on. An indoor swimming pool from Origin will not only enhance the value of your home,
but your home and family life as well. Spending time as a family is one of the most valuable experiences of a child’s life. Swimming brings people together, an activity those of all ages can enjoy and research from Griffith University shows children who learn how to swim at a young age reach many developmental milestones earlier than those who don’t. As well as achieving physical milestones faster, children also scored significantly better in visual-motor skills and many mathematically-related tasks. Their oral expression was also better as well as in the general areas of literacy and numeracy. The research also suggests children who develop a passion for swimming are
more likely to maintain an active lifestyle as they grow older. This lifelong love for swimming can lead to improved overall health and well-being. Origin recognises the value of a healthy lifestyle and encourages families to embrace swimming as a way to stay active together. It creates bonds, memories, and a sense of togetherness. Children who learn to swim early on are not only safer around water, but also feel more empowered to enjoy swimming. It instils confidence and a sense of accomplishment, leading to improved social skills and boosted self-esteem. These emotional benefits extend far beyond the pool and the vital skills learnt will last a lifetime. As we navigate an ever-evolving world, let’s remember that some traditions, like teaching our children to swim and spending time together as a family, remain invaluable. By embracing swimming and family values, we empower our children to lead healthier, safer, and more fulfilling lives. Let Origin help enhance your family life with an indoor swimming pool. originpools.co.uk info@originpools.co.uk 01895 453996 A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

he world outside schools is changing fast,” says Richard Backhouse, Principal of Berkhamsted School, and he is right. Wherever Berkhamsted leavers go next, the new Sixth Form Centre will help them to develop the skills and experience to navigate those worlds. The building will feature a range of innovative design features that will enable an exciting array of new educational approaches to take place.
The building will have its own dedicated entrance, separate from the Berkhamsted Boys and Girls schools, enabling the Sixth Form to have its own distinct identity and allowing students to feel a clear sense of progression up the school. Walking in, students will find themselves in a light, open airy space that will instantly feel warm and welcoming. A large café space will allow students to meet tutors or other members of staff for one-to-one sessions and catch ups. It will also provide a space for students to socialise and collaborate, allowing for a more adult feel to their studies. In addition, a meadow quad – a deviation from the lush, manicured lawns usually associated with school quads – will provide another area for students to socialise and relax. This easy access to the outdoors and a biodiverse space will provide an important wellbeing boost to students too. Collaboration and a more adult feel to studying and socialising are at the heart of these designs and this will be the case in the building’s classrooms too. Classroom design will allow Berkhamsted to really innovate in how students are taught and how they learn. Design has been

HOW THE CAFE AREA WILL LOOK
configured around the Harkness Model, an idea developed in America that sees classes sit around a large boardroom-style table, allowing them to engage in a more discursive approach to learning which may mirror the kind of learning students might expect in a university seminar. This will see teachers guiding discussion rather than simply delivering knowledge, allowing for an inclusive environment where all pupils can give their ideas.
The Sixth Form Centre’s Future Zone will be an area where learning of a different kind will take place. As well as containing the university and careers advice that the school already has, the Future Zone will also contain a working space for young entrepreneurs, enabling students who may already be running or thinking of developing their own business in the future a space in which to do this. Careers advice has traditionally focused on working for big organisations,
but increasingly people are choosing to work for themselves; the Futures Zone will help students to decide whether this is an option they may want to consider in the future. As well as providing spaces and opportunities for innovative teaching, learning, and pupil development, the new Sixth Form building has also been constructed with sustainability at its heart. Designed with low carbon, energy efficiency, resource efficiency and a circular economy approach in mind, the new building will set a blueprint for all future developments at Berkhamsted. Air source heat pumps, an array of solar panels and the biodiverse meadow quad are just some of the sustainability highlights. Whether it is through the innovative teaching and learning methods that it will allow to take place, the sense of community it will foster, or the feel of a university or workplace-style environment, Berkhamsted’s Sixth Form Centre will play an important role in developing the students who pass through its doors. Berkhamsted pupils will be well equipped to face and thrive within the fast-changing world. berkhamsted.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Gavin Taylor, Head of Lockers Park School in Hemel Hempstead, on their many little measures to help enhance their pupils’ education Q How long have you been Head and how proud were you when you took on the position? A I became Headmaster two years ago, but I have been at Lockers Park for 16 years. It is my honour to now lead such a splendid school, where everything we do is geared to equipping our boys for a rich and fulsome life. I’m proud that we’re purposefully small, which allows our boys to achieve excellent results alongside an enthusiasm for life. Q What do you think makes your school stand out? A Lockers Park possesses numerous distinctive qualities that set it apart. Our personalised approach to education, coupled with intentionally maintaining a small student body, empowers boys to thrive in diverse areas. The bond

between our staff and students is remarkably strong, as our dedicated staff is committed to nurturing each boy’s growth, offering them an education without limits, and providing unwavering support when they face challenges. Our Learner Profile centres around key skills that we believe will propel our boys toward success. These criteria apply to all facets of school life, and the boys gain substantial benefits from comprehending how these skills evolve. The advantages of single-sex education are readily evident, allowing boys to develop at their own pace without comparisons to girls. We wholeheartedly embrace each boy’s unique learning style, fostering a hands-on approach that encourages them to inquire and explore the "why" of things. As the boys mature, they can freely ask questions without the fear of embarrassment, and they have the opportunity to explore a wide range of activities without the constraints of gender stereotypes. Our boarding environment extends educational opportunities beyond those offered by our competitors, thanks to an extended school day and a comprehensive program of activities. We provide children with the chance to experience the benefits of a boarding school without the need to sleep away from home. With a 12-hour day and an optional Saturday school program, we offer everything necessary for excellent results and a lifelong enthusiasm for learning. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

“There are two phrases which continually ring out: magical and special”
Q Do you make full use of your surroundings? A We are fortunate – we have 23 acres in Boxmoor, which means that during the 40-minute morning break they can tear around fields and woodlands with just enough time for a bit of den-building. We have a wonderful Forest School program and its success in fostering a love for nature and environmental awareness among the students. This provides valuable hands-on learning experiences, but also helps instil a sense of responsibility towards the environment from a young age. The introduction of features like a pond, allotment, and bug boarding house adds an extra dimension to the outdoor learning opportunities. As well as our sports facilities for rugby, football and cricket we also have the swimming pool, shooting range and our Boarding Parents are both pro-golfers, so they’re teaching the boys that too. Q How key is the 4-13 age range to instil a love of learning? A This is such a pivotal stage for children. They need to have a vibrant and supportive school community that enables them to explore their potential.

We have designed the curriculum embracing metacognition and skills-based learning, taken from the IB, university courses and future employer requirements. This is combined with Learning Science lessons, interactive teaching techniques and optional Saturday school, which means our academic success is demonstrated through boys achieving Common Entrance with their very best results, passing to an impressive range of first-choice destination schools. I believe the best way to embrace a love of learning is by encouraging challenges. The boys are encouraged to question what they read, what they hear, and certainly, what they are taught.
sings in competitions as well as at Chapel. We also provide them with the opportunity to travel whether it’s visiting Cern, our annual French trip, skiing or examining volcanoes in Iceland. The range of activities offered at the school is phenomena. From 7.30am to 7.30pm, there are a multitude of activities available, including chess, debating, skiing, fencing, ju-jitsu, robotics, squash, and many more. We are continually expanding our offerings and are thrilled with the recent sports hall refurbishment, which will introduce a climbing wall, fitness studio, and golf simulator, enhancing our facilities even further.
Q What opportunities do you offer beyond the classroom? A We have a Director of Outdoor Learning, so we literally go beyond the classroom, whether it is Forest School, environmental activities or reenacting the forest scene from Harry Potter during guided reading. There is definitely a benefit to the boys getting outdoors. Beyond this our boys enjoy an enviable range of opportunities. These include excellent sport, and unparalleled music, art and drama. Q What's to come? A This school year is particularly important
as we are celebrating our 150th birthday. It is giving us a unique opportunity to bring together our old boys and their families with our current pupils to share experiences and swap stories about life at Lockers Park. Listening to them there are two phrases which continually ring out: “magical” and “special”. That’s what makes being a Headmaster here so great. lockerspark.co.uk
