e often think of Haworth Parsonage, home of the iconic Brontë family in the 19th century, to be a desolate place surrounded by the dark and menacing Moors. However, life wasn’t all gloomy long nights for the literary clan – like many from God’s Own County, they were huge dog lovers. From Emily Brontë to James Herriot and Dame Judi Dench we have always been a county of devoted cynaphiles (technical name for canine fans), with the recent lockdown causing dog ownership to increase by over a third. And while Emily and Anne Brontë owned two dogs, a bull mastiff cross called Keeper, and Flossy, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, our own daughter, also called Brontë (yes,

THE GORGEOUS MURPHY

I am a devout fan), has recently been given the wondrous gift of Murphy, a sprocker puppy who hails from Doncaster. Life has been a whirlwind of fun and mischief since our naughty pooch has joined his elder, far wiser, and more gentile cocker spaniel brother, Merlin, in the Byrne household. The task of bringing up Murphy has been helped by several fabulous Yorkshire companies that specialise in dog care. And thankfully the huge variety of meals means that long gone from the cupboard are the mass-produced stinky dog food that used to make me gag. Woof store in Leeds has produced delicious sausage training treats, while ten-year-old Wetherby based The Innocent Hound create healthy air-dried food that have proved a firm favourite. But as all pooch owners know of the copious amount of muck dogs love wallowing in, it’s our York-based Free to Live Ltd which have been a total life saver with their beautifully smelling coat mist, shampoo bar and paw and skin balm. I’ve even used the products on my husband David! But having a dog isn’t all fun and frolics. One morning after overindulging at a Christmas party, I was snoozing in bed when I felt something very warm and twitchy on my face and could taste blood. David rushed into the room, ordering me not to open my eyes, before grabbing a furry creature off my face. He had been walking Merlin when the dog had chased a rabbit and dragged the injured bunny into our bedroom, placing the poor beast on my face as a present. Without doubt it was the worst Christmas gift I have ever received.

Keighley’s England rugby star Ellie Kildunne on Olympic ambitions and why heartbreak has ignited her unwavering hunger to win B y N ATA L I E L I

llie Kildunne is a force to be reckoned with. At the age of 24 the tenacious Red Roses fullback, who can also play wing, started out in rugby league at Keighley Rugby Union Football Club in rural West Yorkshire. Today she is fighting fit and flying high at the top of her game. The quote ‘lukewarm is no good’ – a phrase coined by author Roald Dahl – is a tagline on her Instagram biography and one that’s embedded in her psyche. “It’s kind of stuck with me for a while,” she explains. “It’s not something I remind myself of – it’s ingrained in my chemistry to go for things. If I want something to happen, then I’ve just got to throw myself into it. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad, but you’ll never know if you don’t jump.” Growing up in a rural setting, Ellie found herself playing outdoors and “tagging along”, aged six, to a rugby club with her neighbours. She recalls fond memories of walks near Ilkley in Yorkshire with her family and the day her brother Sam ‘ran away’.

“I’ll never forget when my brother started running away from me because he thought I was racing him. You can see the competitiveness in our family already! I said I’d race him to a rock in the distance, and I was kind of letting him win, but he carried on running. I went to get mum and dad to try and catch him – there ended up being a search party to find him!” The great outdoors has been integral to Ellie’s successes and drive for rugby. She recounts playing childhood games of Cops and Robbers, wrestling on the trampoline, and playing tag with her now 21-year-old brother Sam, who is hot on her heels as he plays for England Rugby Sevens and the first team at Loughborough University. Now playing for the Harlequins, Ellie confesses her future desire to settle back down in Yorkshire. “I want my kids to have a similar upbringing to me, I’m stuck to my roots. It’s the most gorgeous place in the world. I enjoyed an outdoorsy childhood that involved lots of running, playing games and growing a competitive side, which has given me the skills that I’ve got today on the rugby field.”

Ellie, an evidently proud sister, smiles as she affectionately credits her brother. “I became ‘the girl that played rugby’ and I was a little bit older so I kind of excelled. I think for a long time my brother was in and out of playing football and rugby, but not in my shadow. “My brother has been the best training partner,” she adds. “When I’ve needed it, he’s pushed me, kept me going and that’s something I really appreciate. I wouldn’t be where I am without him.” As Ellie sets her sights on the Olympic dream, she is adamant that brother Sam will be by her side. “Sam has made a name for himself to be a great rugby player and it’s a dream of both of ours to go to the Olympics together at some point or the Commonwealth Games, because it’s absolutely doable for both of us.” Ellie’s rugby career has gone from strength to strength with a string of impressive performances to her name, from an inaugural Premier 15s season with Gloucester, which led to five more Red Roses starts in the 2018 Women’s Six Nations. She moved to 15s to sevens in August 2018, having scored nine tries in eight appearances for the A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Red Roses. Ellie joined Wasps in 2020 and a move to Harlequins followed in 2021. As for career highlights, Ellie reels them off. “Oh, I’ve got loads,” she grins. “But my top three includes qualifying for the 2020 Olympics. It felt like all the odds were stacked against us. It was just the most amazing time because we worked so hard in the build-up to it to get to that point. “The Women’s World Cup final in 2022 was huge – even though we didn’t win, that experience has shaped me as a rugby player. I’ve never experienced heartbreak like it, but it gave me the first insight of that feeling. You can see it as a downfall,

“I am very proud to be able to inspire people with what I do” but I genuinely believe it’s created a hunger inside me that I never knew I had.” But it was this year’s Women’s Six Nations victory against France at Twickenham which stands out. Not just for the sheer triumph of winning, but the record crowd of 58,000 fans in attendance – a watershed moment for women’s rugby. As the training bus weaved its way through Twickenham a few hours before kick-off, Ellie psyched herself up – afrobeats blaring through her headphones to focus and “get into her own head”. “When I gazed out of the window, I saw the packed-out streets, which meant we took a different route to the stadium. When we sang the national anthem, I was mouthing it because for once I couldn’t hear the players singing on either side of me. Instead, I could hear the whole of Twickenham singing. We’d spent years standing on the field singing on our own or to empty seats. It was a very, very cool moment and it highlighted where the game is going – it’s just exciting to be part of that journey.” Deep in the throes of Rugby World Cup 2025 preparation, Ellie’s focus is unrelenting. “Training camp is full on; we’re learning a lot now,” she says. “Our days stretch from 7am to 9pm. It’s an intense time of focus in a high-performance environment. When I play for the Harlequins, I have Wednesdays and Fridays off. The different environments

push me in different ways to work hard at being the best player I can be.” Ellie has come a long way from the only girl on the field and hiding to change behind a towel in a disabled toilet. She is the first women’s rugby star to collaborate with a sportswear brand launching her sportswear collection with Canterbury last month. The growth of women’s rugby and inspiring young people remains a passion and a privilege for her. “I am very proud to be able to inspire people with what I do. We’ve shown our strength in what was a male dominated sport. “Ultimately all I’m doing is playing rugby and doing what I’ve done since I was a kid. I play because I enjoy it and I’m passionate about it. And the fact that it has such a strong hold on other people and impacts people’s lives is very cool. Q What does your property business offer? A We provide fixed return investment

opportunities linked to specific projects. A lot of people like the idea of investing in property, but they don’t have time or the inclination to do it themselves. We offered a hands free service that meant that people could focus on doing what they love, leaving us to do what we specialise in. Win, win. Q Where did the idea for the On a

Mission podcast come from? A I wanted to do something for myself during lockdown. What began as a simple means to occupy my mind and build relationships during that time has transformed into a flourishing podcasting business with multiple

sponsors and brand ambassadors. I have interviewed top doctors, scientists and lots of amazing celebrities. We cover so much and it’s for anyone on a mission – everything from AI technology to celebrity bodyguards. I’ve spoken to lots of really interesting people! Q What has been your favourite interview? A A great question and my answer probably

changes every time. I genuinely love all the conversations I have on the podcast and we have made some lifelong friends in the process, but I will alway be eternally grateful to Ricky Hatton. As one of my first guests I was a little bit starstruck as I used to watch him fight on the big screen throughout my teenage years. We didn’t have much of a

following at that point, but when other celebrities became aware that I’d had Ricky on, they were a lot more open to coming on. That bit of luck right at the very start paved the way for our future success. Q How does your professional life fit in with your family life? A Work/life balance, is there such a thing? I love what I do and I’m passionate about it so thankfully it doesn’t feel like work. With three young children, though, my priority will always be my family. Of course sacrifices have to be made and I certainly made more than most in the early days as I travelled up and down the country to build my brand, but now things are a lot more flexible and I tend to work on my own terms. I’d rather get up at 4am in the school holidays to box off a chunk of work before the kids get up if that allows me to spend quality time with them through the day. I never fully switch off, but after a lifetime of struggles, I have finally created a life that I don’t need or want to switch off from. and the kids know how lucky they are, so when I nip off to do team Zooms etc they are more than happy with that. I’ve also been known to squeeze in the odd podcast or two when we are on holiday in Dubai, so I’m constantly leveraging time where I can. Q How long have you lived in Doncaster

and what do you love most about it? A I moved to Doncaster when I was 19. I quit my job and the divisional manager offered me a promotion to keep me so I packed up and moved within the week. It was never intended to be a permanent thing but here I am, 21 years later, married with three kids and two dogs and very much at home. Doncaster is very central, we are close to all our family and I can be in London within 90 minutes, which makes it very accessible for the podcast studio. I get elements of London life without the price tag, so that’s always a bonus. Q Do you have a favourite outdoor spot or landmark in Yorkshire? A We love spending time outdoors. As someone who has had money and also had many, many times of being on the breadline, I’ve come to realise that true happiness comes from the simpler things in life. Walking in the woods with my family is my ultimate happy place, no phones, no distractions, just my crazy little tribe. We love the National Trust and regularly go to Clumber Park, which isn’t far from us. We all love it there, it’s a beautiful scenic walk and you can hire bikes too. We are

Acting as the Mary Poppins bag of Yorkshire, the contemporary city offers infinite options of things to do and places to see. Leeds regularly welcomes shopping enthusiasts, sports lovers, book fanatics and gig-goers from all around the world and always lives up to its great expectations. Despite literary giant Charles Dickens not taking a fancy to Leeds, it is a city that rarely disappoints.

Creative culture Being voted as one of the world’s best places to visit in 2022 by TimeOut, it was specifically recognised for being a hub for lovers of live performances. This is no surprise as Leeds is home to one of the UK’s most famous events, Leeds Festival, which takes place every year in August. The city is also well-known for being the location of the only nationally recognised UK opera company outside of London. Not only does Leeds have a rife music scene, but it also thrives in theatre and ballet, with Leeds Grand Theatre and the Northern Ballet holding residence in Leeds. Foodie fancy Not only is Leeds famous for its shopping culture, it also has a reputation for being the ‘Foodie Capital of the North’. Being a jack-of-all-trades in the food industry, Leeds is packed with independent outlets, street food from all around the world and a host of restaurants catering to all tastes. unique approach to street food, where some stalls rotate, meaning each time you visit, there will be different choices of vendors to choose from – an abundance of distinctive flavours and cuisines all under one roof. Kirkgate Market, too, is home to award-winning Vegetarian Punjabi streetfood vendor Manjit’s Kitchen, as well as the Yorkshire Pudding Wrap Company. The city’s much-loved indie food scene spans from the city centre to local neighbourhood eateries in locations such

as Hyde Park and Headingley. The UK’s very first independent food festival – Leeds Indie Food – took place this year for the first time in May 2015 and is an annual tradition that champions the best names in the independent food landscape. There are also a host of mainstream restaurants that offer delicious delicacies. Gino D’Acampo is a restaurant located in the Marriott Hotel and prepares immaculate Italian cuisine. Indian restaurant, Mowgli, makes for a novelty experience with its swinging, fairly-lit chairs that are surrounded by trees, taking your dining experience to the next level. The surrounding areas of the city have many independent coffee shops and eateries that have more intimate qualities. Coffee on the Crescent is an independent cafe in Hyde Park that specialises in coffee, cakes and pastries. The staff are especially welcoming and the cafe itself perfectly captures the true essence of its surroundings.

Good sport If you’re not a foodie, but a lover of sports, Leeds is still the place to be. A city with an affluent sporting heritage, it’s home to the likes of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Leeds United FC and Leeds Rhinos. It also has an impressive reputation for hosting many international sporting events. Cricket is especially popular in Leeds, with Headingley stadium always proving a great pitch for test cricket. Leeds is always known as a paradise for golfers, with many outstanding golf clubs in the area. Moortown Golf Club, in particular, carries an impressive status, as it hosted the second ever Ryder Cup in 1929.

Educating Yorkshire Leeds was also once rated as the UK’s best university destination, with more than 10% of the population studying their undergraduate degree at a university in Leeds. The city is home to multiple universities, like the University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett University, the University of Law and Leeds Arts University, all of which specialise in different sectors. Many famous faces have in fact studied in Leeds. Star Trek actor, Chris Pine, studied at the University of Leeds for his exchange year. Jonathan and Alistair Brownlee, World Triathlon Champions, are also Leeds alumni, both receiving a sports scholarship for the University of Leeds. Many more wellknown characters were also educated in Leeds, such as reality television star Jamie Laing, Bastille’s Dan Smith and broadcaster Emma Crosby.

A homely city Despite its busy nature and popular student activity, it’s also a favoured city for families. Hyde Park, Headingley and Burley are areas that predominantly consist of students, but neighbourhoods like Roundhay, Oakwood and Meanwood tend to be mainly populated by families. These quieter parts of Leeds also contribute eminently to the city’s refreshing nature with many congenial places to walk and explore. Roundhay, for example, is the birthplace of one of the largest urban parks in Europe that was actually created by William the Conqueror. Roundhay Park makes for a beautiful destination to enjoy a walk on a crisp autumn morning. Covering over 700 acres of parkland, lakes and woodlands, the park is a grand event location, hosting many food festivals and concerts throughout the year. It also features Lakeside Cafe, an inviting

tearoom that serves ice cream, cakes and hot drinks. Neighbouring it is indoor wildlife park, Tropical World, where you can meet meerkats, monkeys, lizards and butterflies. It makes for a perfect day of family fun! Leeds also has many more nature-driven areas to explore that are magnificent all year round, but are particularly alluring as the leaves are falling. Temple Newsam, a Tudor-Jacobean house, has lovely grounds to explore, as well as a newly built farm. Kirkstall Abbey, Green Acre Park and Meanwood Valley Trail are also great destinations to wander. A new sculpture from Yinka Shonibare is set to be unveiled as part of LEEDS 2023, creating a powerful legacy for the life of David Oluwale

ibiscus Rising, a new sculpture by international artist Yinka Shonibare CBE RA, will be unveiled in Leeds on 25 November as part of LEEDS 2023, Year of Culture, co-commissioned by The David Oluwale Memorial Association (DOMA) to honour the life of Oluwale. David Oluwale was a British Nigerian Leeds resident who was hounded to his death on 18 April 1969, drowning in the River Aire as a result of systematic police harassment and violence. Like Shonibare, David Oluwale spent his childhood in Lagos, moving to Leeds in 1949. Oluwale faced homelessness, mental ill-health and racism in the years before his death. Oluwale’s legacy has since inspired protest, reflection and reform in Leeds and beyond. Hibiscus Rising is inspired by the hibiscus flower, a plant ubiquitous in Nigeria. This 10m high public artwork features Shonibare’s renowned African-inspired batik patterns, which explore themes of cultural and national identity. The flower grows all over Nigeria, where both Shonibare and Oluwale spent their childhoods, and for the artist evokes joyful memories of youth. The sculpture will be at the centre of a landscape designed by urban and rural place design company Planit-IE, whose vision of ruptured ground giving way to the growth of the sculpture will create a striking setting. The sculpture will be located in the South Bank on Meadow Lane,

next to the river in which he died and the recently opened David Oluwale footbridge. Kully Thiarai, creative director and CEO of LEEDS 2023, says: “Hibiscus Rising is one of the most significant projects for LEEDS 2023 and we have been looking forward to seeing this new public artwork realised for a long time. David’s life story is incredibly important to the city and to remember him with such an extraordinary piece of art that will remain in Leeds long after our Year of Culture is something we are extremely proud to be a part of. We hope that Hibiscus Rising will be a symbol of hope, a place for reflection and for coming together in Leeds to look towards a positive future.” Yinka Shonibare adds: “The sculpture will serve as a meeting point for reconciliation, a place of healing, a monument to the care of the most vulnerable in society. A pledge to address issues of poverty, mental health

care, police harassment, homelessness and all types of discrimination. Here a new hope is created out of discord and trauma.” Since 2008, the DOMA charity has been working to promote equality, diversity and racial harmony in Leeds, using art and events to remember Oluwale’s life and create positive change. Hibiscus Rising is a flagship project for the charity with the sculpture and surrounding green space considered as a place for performance and play, contemplation and reflection. In the run up to the unveiling of the sculpture, DOMA are organising events across Leeds to mark this significant moment for the city, including an African-themed fundraising dinner (29 September) and a guided walk around Leeds in David Oluwale’s footsteps led by Joe Williams (10 September). Dr Emily Zobel Marshall, co-chair of DOMA, says: “David’s story has left a mark on the city he came to from Nigeria

to find a better life. Hibiscus Rising will be a memorial for him and also a symbol for the city, a reminder of issues still faced by many today and a place for quiet contemplation as well as cultural celebration. “I took part in a consultation and review of all statues by Leeds City Council, which resulted in the suggestion to ‘commission works of art that commemorate the contributions of the diverse citizens of Leeds’ in July 2022. It’s wonderful to see Leeds City Council committed to supporting ‘Hibiscus Rising’ and delivering on that vital recommendation. A better future can only be built on a better understanding of the past and remembering David through Hibiscus Rising can help us with that, leaving a legacy of hope and creativity.” Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s deputy leader and executive member for economy, culture and education, says: “The unveiling of this magnificent new public artwork is a moment Leeds can be truly proud of and one which makes a powerful statement about the city and what it stands for. “As well as being a beautiful new addition to Leeds, Hibiscus Rising will also stand as a lasting tribute to the life and legacy of David Oluwale and, alongside the David Oluwale memorial bridge, will be a symbol of the inclusion, diversity and unity which are the cornerstones of Leeds today. “We’re immensely proud to have worked with the David Oluwale Memorial Association (DOMA), LEEDS 2023 and internationally renowned artist Yinka Shonibare to bring this stunning project to life.” Jenny Waldman, director at Art Fund, concludes: “Hibiscus Rising will be the largest permanent sculpture by Yinka Shonibare CBE RA in the UK. Now in its 9th year, and a firmly established destination for seasonal gift shopping, The Hepworth Wakefield’s Festive Market will be happening this year on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 November and Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 December, 10am until 4pm. The Festive Market will take place at Tileyard North, the refurbished textile mill opposite the gallery, and The Hepworth Wakefield. Entry to The Festive Market is £2 – members of the gallery and under 18s can get in for free.

Each weekend will feature a different line-up of stall holders handpicked from Yorkshire and across the UK. Visitors will find over 90 stalls each weekend selling candles, ceramics, gifts for children, homeware, prints, textiles, stationery and food and drink – and each and every purchase comes with the feelgood factor of supporting independent makers. The Festive Market is perfect for families with young children. As well as a sculpture garden to run around in and pop-up Art Pods in the gallery spaces, families can create their very own seasonal prints inspired by Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures, which are on display at The Hepworth Wakefield. Suitable for families with children aged 2-12, family activities are free for Wakefield residents, under 18s and anyone who has purchased an exhibition ticket. During the Festive Market weekends, visitors can also purchase a £6 exhibition ticket to experience all that The Hepworth Wakefield has to offer this winter. Two new exhibitions open to coincide with the Festive Market weekend – the first major museum exhibition of Kim Lim’s work in almost 25 years and a solo exhibition of the work of Scottish painter Andrew Cranston. Also on display are works by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore alongside contemporary artists including Turner Prize winner Veronica Ryan and acclaimed ceramicist Magdalene Odundo. SUCCESS

The head chef at one of York’s ﬁnest restaurants, Will Lockwood on working for Tommy Banks, tasting menus and turning his back on forensic science By MARK KEBBLE

bsolutely Yorkshire has met many masters of their craft, and more often than not they always seem to be almost blissfully unaware of how amazing their work is. It’s something that certainly springs to mind when chatting to Will Lockwood, who is as modest as they come when reflecting on his work. The head chef of Roots is a holder of one Michelin star, but he seems so relaxed as he recounts his journey to the York fine dining institution. “I think hospitality and cooking was always in my DNA, but I was never encouraged at school to follow this career route,” he reflects, “even though I was obviously incredibly passionate about it. I think schools and colleges are very quick to push you down the

university route, even if it’s not the right option for you, and it wasn’t for me.” He studied Forensic Science at university, a subject I have to admit I am fascinated about – but it did not leave its mark on Will. “I don’t think anything I learnt at university helped me,” he shrugs, “but I did enjoy moving out, gaining independence and meeting new people.” During this time, and many years before, another side to Will’s life was taking shape. “From a really young age I loved cooking,” he smiles. “My mum was always a good cook, and I’ve always been really greedy, so when I realised I could cook for myself, it was a win, win. I used to cook a lot at home throughout my early teens. I would just flick through recipe books and decide what I wanted to cook that week. The dishes always turned out pretty well, so I think I might be half decent at it.” It’s just the first of several modest statements that Will serves up during our interview. Once he had decided that helping solve crime was not for him, an entirely different scene was set. “When I left university, I worked in a restaurant called The Spiced Pear, close to where my family lived,” he says. “It was a great place to work, and always busy, so it turned me from a home cook into thinking like a professional chef pretty quickly.” It’s nearly ten years since he joined uber-award winning chef Tommy Banks at the Black Swan in Oldstead. Why was he keen to make that leap? “Honestly? I didn’t really know about The Black Swan at all, but I knew it had a Michelin star, and I had a lot of ambition, so I just really wanted to work there. But I thought I wasn’t going to cut it. The standard in the kitchen was so much higher than what I was used to, and I was incredibly hard on myself. I did eventually relax into the role, and before long I was used to the standard. It was amazing and I learnt a lot very quickly.”

Will became a key part of The Black Swan’s evolution and has remained a part of the Tommy Banks’ foodie machine ever since. “Tommy is just a really great boss,” Will smiles. “He was a good and very patient teacher when I was a young chef. As I’ve progressed to running the kitchen, he’s continued to be supportive, but allows me to create the food that I want to make.” That running of a kitchen brings us to Roots in York. Roots was built in a public house dating back to the 19th century, previously called The Bay Horse. Thought up by the duo of Tommy Banks and restaurateur Matthew Lockwood, the restaurant was their bid to bring a taste of the chef’s flagship to the city. INSIDE ROOTS

The name ‘Roots’ is a nod to the chef’s origins in Oldstead, and likewise, the menu mixes classical dishes from the restaurant with new ones, in a modern, laid-back, city centre dining room. Roots was awarded a star in the Michelin guide for Great Britain and Ireland in 2021, the year that Will took over the head chef role there. “I was just really excited for a new challenge, and to put my stamp on things and make it the best restaurant I possibly could,” he says on the change of position. He discusses how the team are constantly evolving when it comes to the dishes we can enjoy at Roots, but the essence of the menu remains the same. “It is really dictated by the produce from Oldstead farm,” Will says. “We want to make every ingredient and dish on the menu as delicious and creative as we possibly can.” Why have they gone down the tasting menu route? “I think tasting menus allow you to balance the taste and texture

throughout a menu rather than on just one plate of food,” Will explains. “For me, this means you can be more extreme in one particular flavour or texture because you balance it out with the rest of the menu. It’s a much more creative way of cooking.” Does he have a favourite dish currently on the menu? “My favourite dish is the crab custard and toast. It’s almost become a signature dish of ours at Roots and definitely one of the most photographed on social media. It’s just got everything a dish needs – a bit of spice, crunch, acidity, creaminess and of course caviar.” He’s keen, too, to pass on some knowledge to hungry diners. “The team and I want to make the Roots experience as special and unique as possible, but in a more relaxed, non-stuffy environment. We try really hard to tell the story of our ethos and ingredients too, so guests understand just how special the dishes are that they are eating. We get a lot of people celebrating special occasions with us, so it’s important we make those moments memorable for them.” Roots is certainly one of York’s most memorable restaurants to visit, but Will insists the entire city is coming good when it comes to food. “The scene is quietly getting better and better in York,” Will says. “There are some fantastic places around regardless of your budget. Fingers crossed it continues the way it’s going.” As Will is called back to the kitchen, we end as we began with a modest soundbite from one of Yorkshire’s top chefs. Q Have you always been interested in fashion? A Fashion magazines were all I was interested in. I was obsessed with the Sex in the City film, not for the sex in the city, but for the clothes. My first job was at Hobbs as a Saturday shop girl. I was good at selling and this led me to study fashion marketing at Nottingham Trent. Q Do you have any fun stories from when you started out? A My first internship was at Gucci in the press office and it was at a time when content creators and influencers didn’t exist. Instagram wasn’t a thing until 2014 and blogs were only just starting to draw attention. It was all about the celebrities. I would be chucked into the back of a taxi with handbags to drop off to Peaches Geldof’s house in the hope that she would get papped and put into a magazine. That's how we did it back then! Q Why do you love French style? A When I was at university, I visited Paris with

my mum for the weekend and fell in love. After interning for a while and climbing the ladder, I got an assistant role at a press office in Paris. I was 22 and had very English fashion. When I arrived there, I quickly learnt there were unspoken rules when it came to fashion. For example, wearing tights was a sin. I had this style re-birth on how to dress the French way. Working the shows with all the celebrities, you could say I was a real-life Emily in Paris.

quintessentially French. In terms of design, scallops are also a very popular feature for trims of cardigans or t-shirts. Q Does your personal style go hand-in-hand with Aurélie? A Some people joke that it’s the ‘Luniform’ because my name is Lucy and Aurélie is all that I wear! I’ve had people contact me to say, ‘Your model is really pretty, but we want to see more of you because it’s real’. I really like that it's a small, curated collection with our core basics like the trench, jumpers, blouses and jeans. Q What’s the best thing about Yorkshire? A The people and being in a friendly

community where everyone says hello. I also love being close enough to the Dales for big country walks at lunch.

Q What are you working on at the moment? A We’re just about to launch our first

jewellery collection, French style of course. English jewellery is quite chunky with big chains, whereas French jewellery is very delicate. So Aurélie will have finer pieces that are affordable, for everyday wear. aurelie.co.uk AURÉLIE JUMPER, NAVY

Q What made you want to launch Aurélie? A In terms of my background, I worked on

lots of big French accounts with beautiful hotels like Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc and Le Bristol Paris. I loved it, but decided to move back home and set up on my own. I had my agency, LRPR, for about six years until the pandemic hit and travel was annihilated. It made me rethink and gravitate back to my fashion roots. I knew about wholesale, where suppliers were and had a connection with French clothing, so I just went for it. Q Who is the Aurélie woman? A Aurélie is designed for the English

woman, with an authentically French touch. It’s someone who wants to feel put-together and chic, but doesn’t have to think too hard. They’re not overdone, but they feel effortlessly amazing. Q How do you implement French style on the women of Yorkshire? A I personally love the French look, but there is a formula to it. It’s about showing our customers how to style the pieces for everyday life. British women have different

figures to French women, so we don’t dress the same. A lot of French women wear drapey, backless things and they might not wear a bra. Whereas that’s not going to work for us because we tend to have curves and bigger chests! Whenever I’m buying pieces, I always ask myself if it’s going to flatter my clients. Q So, your role overlaps as a stylist and personal shopper too? A Yes, I try to advise as much as possible on the website and social media. All the pieces should easily be able to rotate within the wardrobe. You could wear that classic cut T-shirt with trainers on the school run, or you could dress it up for dinner with a sexy lace underneath paired with black jeans and heels. I also have individual clients that I source specific items for. I’m always honest if I can’t find what they’re looking for because it has to meet a certain standard. Quality is really important to me and the Aurélie brand. I love well-made clothes. Q What is Aurélie’s best-selling item? A The Breton jumper, it just seems to

MARRIED AT YSP ON 22 JULY

The YSP has been an important location for both James and I throughout our lives. Long before we met, we both visited the sculpture park as children. James is a ceramic and bronze sculptor and I am a teacher of textiles, design technology & art, so the park has always been a source of inspiration to us. When we were looking to settle and find somewhere to live with our blended family which includes four children and a dog, West Bretton, where the park is located, was the obvious choice. James has a studio and gallery space at Longside, part of the YSP estate. We regularly walk in the grounds and always say “Hello Barbara” when we pass the Family of Man Sculptures by Barbara Hepworth, who is a huge inspiration for both of us. With a plethora of delightful memories, we couldn’t think of anywhere more perfect to get married. It was important for us to capture the magnificence of these important works of art. Nowhere else could we have our photos with such iconic sculptures with such a stunning landscape as the backdrop. We were lucky enough to convince our friend Cristian Barnett, an extremely talented and renowned food photographer, to shoot the wedding. He had some wonderfully unusual ideas for the pre wedding photography! We

loved his vision for something truly unique. We had photographs taken with sculptures by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Anthony Caro, Robert Indiana and James Turrell. The service itself was intimate, with just our closest family and wedding party, and it took place in the main visitors centre. The team took care of everything, really looked after us and accommodated all our wishes for the look and feel of the ceremony. My father and eldest son gave me away. My youngest son and my step brother played guitar for me to walk down the aisle (Big Love, by Fleetwood Mac). James' son was the ring bearer and his daughter was one of the bridesmaids along with two of our nieces and three of my closest friends. We chose to have our wedding reception at The Weston restaurant in the grounds of the YSP. We are both fans of contemporary architecture and the atmosphere and spectacular views were exactly what we wanted. Matt, the manager of the Weston, and his team served up an impressive three course meal for our 90 guests who joined us for the celebrations. It was a wonderfully relaxed vibe with impromptu speeches, readings and poetry, and music and dancing later on. The food was exemplary, beautifully presented, plentiful and sophisticated. With our wonderful family and friends travelling from far and wide, it was a true pleasure to welcome them all to be immersed in this beautiful part of Yorkshire and show off our art, food and warmest hospitality at its best. MARRIED AT YSP ON 4 AUGUST

As a couple, we’re pretty flamboyant. So we always knew that we wanted a venue which would offer something different and deliver a wow factor on our big day. YSP was a no-brainer for that reason. It’s also a special place for both of us. We’ve both been visiting together since we first met and Liam’s parents have been involved with the venue for over 43 years, making it not only beautiful, but emotionally poignant. We decided to have a small service of 56 people outside in the formal gardens, as the grounds are so incredibly beautiful. We hired benches from a local company to seat our guests and had beautiful aisle sculptures created by Liam’s mum, artist Joanna Mowbray and constructed by Campbell Mowbray. We then enlisted the help of our friend and superstar florist, Yan Skates, to create bespoke flower arrangements to run down the aisle runner. Although we knew YSP had an auditorium to fall back on, it’s safe to say we were praying for good weather on our big day, but it actually rained the entire morning. My stepdad Russell ended up re-polishing the wedding car three times before picking me up. But, after a pretty stressful morning of panic and rain, a miracle happened. The sun shone down and it ended up being exactly as we envisioned it. The YSP grounds were the perfect setting for me to walk down the aisle arm in arm with my grandad and for us to get married. My mum and grandmother were in tears – after 15 years together, finally we were married! It couldn’t have been a more amazing ceremony. One of the things we loved most about YSP as a venue was the ability to roll everything into one, the ceremony, the photos and our wedding breakfast. So once we had tied the knot in the formal gardens, we briefly left

our guests and went off on a Land Rover tour of the park to capture photos with Leo, our photographer, and my Maid of Honour, Rachel, for emotional and of course dress support. Being able to visit the different artworks in the grounds offered such an incredible backdrop for our photos, the only difficulty was trying to pin down which pieces to visit and avoiding the sheep poo. But we think the shots were well worth the stains. We then headed upstairs to the dining room, which had been completely transformed by the staff and our YSP planner Lisa. You would never know it was a cafe during the day. We had five larger round tables seating the guests, a table displaying our amazing three tiered wedding cake made by Liam’s mum and a long head table to seat all our family. Each table was decorated with white table clothes, vintage bottles and

brass candle stick holders we had collected, bespoke name card holders designed by Liam’s dad and little crystal wedding favours created by our friend Florence. To some it might seem random, but for us it all came together to create the eclectic look we were after. The catering at YSP was second to none, our guests enjoyed a selection of canapes, then an amazing three course meal consisting of salmon mouse, vegan tartlets, braised lamb & grilled sea bass, as well as a dessert of dark chocolate tart. The food was amazing, the service was seamless and the atmosphere was perfect. We didn’t have to worry about a thing. All in all we loved using YSP as our venue. s a time-poor toddler mum, getting out of the house to do exercise can be tricky. Anything beyond the gym days I’ve preagreed with my husband is a challenge at the moment, so I always appreciate being able to exercise at home (squeezing in a quick training session during nap time is a dream!). Doing the same videos day-in-day-out can get dull very quickly though. So I was excited to discover the Silver Linings platform, which has new content added to it regularly. Silver Linings was founded by Chrissy Sundt, a classical Pilates, Yoga and barre instructor who also has a passion for holistic wellness. Chrissy has been teaching for over 20 years and combines

education with her ongoing work as a choreographer. After eight years of training at the Royal Ballet School and a dance career that saw her dance with both the Royal Ballet and the Birmingham Royal Ballet, an ankle injury led her to discover the rehabilitative benefits of Pilates. After teaching in multiple boutique studios across London, a series of trips to Kamalame Cay (the postcard-perfect private island in the Bahamas) inspired her to launch her first Silver Linings Wellbeing retreat. Two channels on YouTube: ‘SL By Chrissy’ and ‘Silver Linings @Home’ aim to bring the benefits of her retreats to a wider audience. The athome classes deliberately avoid expensive equipment, and users only need a mat to participate. Classes are delivered by a roster

of brilliant practitioners – with specialisms from Yoga to mediation, HITT, barre, core, and more. What I’ve really loved is the varying length of the classes – with quick 12 minute workouts and more in-depth 45 minute-long classes (perfect for those with demanding schedules). The way the classes combine different disciplines is also refreshing, and all the movements can be modified, depending on the level you’re at. As an ex-ballet dancer myself, I've really enjoyed Chrissy's choreography and pacing as well. All-in-all it’s safe to say I’m hooked already, and the best bit? Open plan living and hidden rooms

Open plan living has grown hugely in popularity over the last few years, creating versatile and functional spaces. By creating hidden rooms and seamless storage we’ve allowed the main kitchen and dining space to become a minimal, clean and clutter free space. The luxury kitchen features a central fireplace that connects the living and dining areas to create the perfect entertaining space. The polished concrete floor can also streamline the eye, guiding you through the home via the consistency of the material, creating a cohesive and connected space that flows naturally into the concrete patio outdoors. The industrial aesthetic of the flooring is complemented with pops of colour to create a trendy and sleek living space.

Luxury bathrooms

Sandmoor Avenue is complete with four bathrooms, a sauna and two additional cloakroom bathrooms. The two main bathrooms boast large freestanding bathtubs, wet room showers, full wall to ceiling glass walls and double sinks, and the master bathroom also boasts a luxury glass sauna.

Minimal luxury

The bedrooms focus on creating quiet luxury. When building a minimal luxe bedroom, it’s essential to pair back on the visual clutter, instead focusing on in-built storage and tactile materials to create a space that feels calming and homely. Statement glass

Glass is becoming a go to material for creating a statement in luxury housing projects and simultaneously creating brighter spaces that flood homes with light and colour. The Sandmoor Avenue project was complete with an entirely glass back and bifold doors, creating a huge open plan living room and dining space that flows seamlessly into the garden. Large internal windows are featured throughout the rest of the home. Glass balconies have also been created in both the office and master bedroom which connect the rooms to the garden, creating a sense of tranquillity. Modern statement glass doors have also been used at the front entrance, bringing unique style and colour to the home as well as a statement chandelier, which holds hundreds of individual light bulbs.

Q When was Leger Interiors founded and

what initially did you specialise in?

A Established in 1984, Leger Interiors

began as a small family business, primarily specialising in kitchens for 18 years. The business changed hands when it was acquired by Mark and Jackie Pickersgill, who not only continued its operation, but also expanded it further. In January 2022, my wife and I assumed ownership of the business. Our decision was inspired by our exceptional experience with Leger Interiors a few years ago when we renovated our family bathroom. A Our showroom is a hive of activity with

a relaxed, friendly, welcoming atmosphere. The team are highly trained, helpful and willing to listen – we allow the customer to set the pace. A It's challenging to highlight just one because

there have been numerous projects over the years. Currently, we're immersed in a delightful renovation on Fulford Road, York. This involves the sensitive restoration of a period Victorian property. The renovation includes the construction of a new bathroom in a hallway space on the first floor, as well as extensive work on the ground floor. The goal is to create a stunning open-plan living area

that seamlessly integrates a new kitchen and dining space. Additionally, a predominantly glazed living room will offer a picturesque view of the client's enchanting garden. Q How do you see your future evolving? A At Leger, our vision is to be our clients'

primary choice for all their home needs, which is why we provide a comprehensive range of services. heffield Girls’ Infant and Junior School are in celebratory mood as they reflect on being named the top Independent Prep School in the country at a glittering ceremony in London in early October. The Independent Schools of the Year Awards, hosted by Independent School Parent Magazine, aim to recognise excellence and outstanding achievement in all areas of education, and through their 23 award categories they seek to shine a light on new initiatives and those schools who are delivering unique and invaluable programmes and partnerships to benefit their pupils and wider communities. Sheffield Girls’ Infant and Juniors have been recognised for their exemplary character education, which is interwoven into the delivery of their unique Fusion Curriculum, which aims to develop and strengthen six core competencies: Creativity, Independence, Morals & Ethics, Confidence, Appreciation and Curious Cognition. With younger pupils also working towards their School Values Awards, which focus on positivity, courage and kindness, the result at the end of Year 6 is a group of enthusiastic and resilient ‘Girls of Steel’, ready to move on to their secondary education and take their place in an ever changing world.

Reflecting on his school’s incredible achievement, headteacher Christepher Hald says: “Our Girls of Steel character education programme provides opportunities for creativity, risk-taking, teamwork, leadership, competition and social entrepreneurship – everything that will be required of the leaders of tomorrow. Every pupil is valued and allowed to develop as an individual; their Sheffield Girls’ experience is much more than just going to school – rather, it is the journey to self. I’m delighted to see their efforts, and those of our wonderful staff, recognised in this way.” The school’s Juniors have enjoyed regular trips and residentials throughout the school year linked to curriculum topics and subjects. These excursions challenge the girls, help them to build friendships, develop their confidence, and hone their social and teamwork skills. Day trips have included THE TEAM COLLECTING THEIR AWARD

the Hepworth Gallery, Eyam, Hartington, Magna, and Botanical Gardens. There have been several residential visits across the year. Year 3 took a trip to Losehill Hall in Castleton, where they enjoyed a history walk, candle making, archery, shelter building and, of course, lots of lovely ice cream! Year 4 had the chance to stretch their legs and broaden their horizons with two days of mountain biking, weaselling, cargo net, outdoor pursuits and more at Thornbridge. Year 5 spent three adventure packed days in Whitby, where they went to the Jet Heritage Museum, Saltwick Bay, fossil and jet hunting at the beach, Captain Cook’s Monument, crazy golf and a treasure trail at Whitby Museum, not forgetting cookies and hot chocolate at bedtime of course. Year 6 had three days to challenge and explore at Kingswood with buggy building, abseiling, low ropes, cycling, orienteering, zip wire and Jacob’s ladder really testing the girls’ teamwork and communication skills. It was topped off with a disco for anyone who still had strength in their legs! There has been plenty more happening at the school, too. In front of parents and the wider school community, junior pupils gave presentations and completed experiments during Science Week on this year’s theme of connection and climate,

inspiring some of the younger infants to get stuck into science as well and impressing some of their senior pupils and science teachers who popped over to take a look. This year, the school also welcomed Kelsey Madden, an archaeologist from Sheffield University, to talk to pupils about digging up the Roman past. The girls were able to experiment with dig techniques and handle some genuine Roman artefacts. Also, a number of their talented pupils exhibited their artwork at this year's Sheffield Young Artists exhibition, a citywide art event, organised by the Abbeydale Rotary Club. This inspiring event included over 900 works of art, revealing what talented artists we have in our schools and across our wonderfully creative city. There was also plenty to admire out of the classroom. Their U11 netball team stormed to victory at the Mylnhurst Netball competition, adding another

trophy to their collection. And, in March, their junior Football Club members met with female semi pro footballers from Sheffield United at Ecclesall Primary School for a coaching experience and didn’t hesitate to test their ball skills despite the snow, an incredible opportunity which marked the FA ‘Girls in Football Day’. And this year their Juniors have explored off-line algorithms and processes, have programmed Microbits, have completed scratch coding tasks, and their Robotics and Code Club teams have competed and won World Educational Robotics (WER) challenges at the Primary Regional Finals in June which the school hosted. More on the Leeds estate agents who have raised over £13,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support

team of estate agents from Manning Stainton have raised £13,500 for MacMillan Cancer Support after walking, running and cycling over 180 miles across Yorkshire and Lancashire. Over 80 staff from Manning Stainton and its parent company, Northern Estate Agencies Group, took part in The Coffee Cup Relay challenge which saw them run, walk and cycle between all of their 36 branches. Mark Manning, managing director of Manning Stainton, says: “It was incredible to see our whole team come together and make their way across the whole of Yorkshire and Lancashire on foot or bike, visiting all our branches along the way. “The idea for the relay came from one of our sales negotiators and everyone quickly got on board and came together to take on the challenge. We’ve raised an incredible amount for

a charity that’s close to many of our hearts, and the team should be very proud of themselves.” Northern Estate Agencies Group, which has a 36-branch network across Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and Lancashire, has a long-term partnership with Macmillan, with a commitment to raise over £60,000 for the cancer charity in the next four years. It has supported Macmillan Cancer Support in West Yorkshire since 2012. York ICE TRAIL Make It York have announced that plans are underway for the family-favourite event to return in February 2024

he theme for the York Ice Trail 2024 will transform York into the ‘City of Dreams’ and invite people to think big and let their creativity run wild. The last York Ice Trail took place in February 2023 and was a huge success. Over 40,000 visitors came to the city to view the 36 ice sculptures that lined the streets over the weekend. Research commissioned with Qa Research showed that 9 out of 10 visitors would recommend the trail to family and friends, with 4 out of 5 saying they would want to return for the next Ice Trail. The free trail also had a positive impact on businesses in the city, with 85% of visitors eating out or drinking in cafes, bars and restaurants, plus almost 50% were likely to go shopping. York Ice Trail 2024, to be held on 3-4 February, will once again see the ‘coolest’ sculptures line the streets of York, all sponsored by local businesses. UK and Europe’s leading ice specialist, Icebox, will design and create all sculptures for the 2024 trail.
