would love to say my wedding was the most memorable day of my life, but in all honesty the actual event was a bit of a blur. Strangely I do remember some of the more bizarre moments. My best men – yes I couldn't decide, so had two –stayed the night before, so for some reason I was shunted up to the loft room where all my kids toys were still on show. Now that was a very strange feeling as I tried to sleep realising I was getting married tomorrow, whilst looking at my immaculately collected He-Man set. I couldn't eat the next morning, and when I arrived at the church around an hour before the service, the first person to arrive – even before for me – was one of Karen's best friends, who promptly burst into tears. I like to think she was crying with happiness. Some 45 minutes after the start of the service and my wife to be was not there. Waiting for a delayed hairdresser, apparently, but all I recall were nervous glances from everyone in the church. My speech? Nope. And to this day people say they were at the evening service when I swear they weren't. But I wouldn't change any of it for the world, which made putting together this month's wedding special a trip down (sort of) memory lane. For anyone getting married, enjoy (and try to remember) it!

ROCK
How Ascot local Danielle Mason has embraced everything in an eclectic CV, from modelling to supporting well-known charities By ELLIE-MAE HAMMOND
G
lamour model Danielle Mason found widespread fame on TV show My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding and has ridden the wave of British television ever since. Today, she continues to focus on her television work, but spends a great deal of her time supporting some incredible charities that are close to her heart – and yet her career took off via one of the nation’s most discussed newspaper sections. “I started off doing page 3 when I was 21 and then I went on to do reality TV shows followed by some British films and some presenting work. My glamour modelling days were fantastic,” she smiles. “There’s so much stigma around the topic, however those within the industry itself just get it. The misconceptions surrounding it would come from outside the industry.
“Back in the day, page 3 was iconic. Nowadays, not so much, but back then it was a huge industry, and there was so much buzz around being a glamour model. You got to fly out all over the world. I went to Barbados and shot a calendar out there. It was a cool lifestyle. I understand why some people don’t want to see it in the paper, but back then, it was rather iconic to be a page 3 girl. What a lot of people don’t know is a lot of really good business women have come from page 3. And the best thing that I found with it was that it was all so natural. It wasn’t airbrushed or anything – it was just a real girl, embracing their feminine side. I went to a convent in Berkshire, so me doing page 3 was quite a shock to my family’s system.” While Mason’s glamour modelling career continued to flourish, she met cage fighter Tony Giles, which opened up a whole new career path. “I’ve done quite a few TV shows in my time, but the one I ended up getting most known for was Gypsy
Weddings,” she says. “My partner [Giles] was a traveller, and quite well-known in the community as a cage fighter. We got together and the programme makers at Gypsy Weddings approached us and asked us to do the show. It ended up getting 15 million viewers, much to my surprise. “I often get asked how I adapted to the traveller community, coming from a non-traveller background,” she continues. “The truth is, I didn’t, I changed nothing. I brought all my morals and culture into the community when I entered it. My partner ended up moving in with me in a house, as opposed to a chalet, however he didn’t really cope well with that. Me coming from a glamour modelling background, I often felt the odd one out amongst the women in the community.” After this TV breakthrough, Mason then went on to do a long line of similar shows within the traveller community. “Another show I did was The Gypsies Next Door, on Channel 5, which was about me A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

GETTING CREATIVE AT THE LOOK OUT DISCOVERY CENTRE
PINK RIBBON IS A CHARITY CLOSE TO HER HEART
“I support Pink Ribbon where I can. It is such a beautiful organisation” taking a traveller girl and getting her into glamour modelling and seeing if she liked it. Understandably, her family was completely against it. I personally find the traveller community very interesting, so I always jump to do these shows. It’s gaining a totally new insight into a community where my kids are a part of it. Their morals are very different, so I am always wanting to learn more about their culture, more for my kids’ sake.” Aside from doing TV shows surrounding the traveller community, Mason has also dipped her toe in a few other genres. “My career began on page 3 of The Sun, however I then went on to do other women’s magazines and other reality TV shows. I went on to do cooking on a host of morning TV shows. I also did a show called Filthy Rich and Famous, which was basically to see how different their lives were compared to famous siblings. It was a controversial show, but interesting to do. You had the likes of Elton John's brother, Simon Cowell’s sibling and then me, Jessie Wallace’s half-sister.” Moving on to what life is like for Mason today, a mother of two and a local Ascot NOT A BAD PLACE FOR A STROLL
resident, it’s clear times have changed. “I’ve been supporting the events for Pink Ribbon, the breast cancer charity. Christine McGuinness is one of the ambassadors, and there’s also quite a few big faces that support this charity. It’s a brilliant cause so I want to continue to support them in any way possible. One thing I love about this organisation is that it’s a beautiful community. “BulliesOut is another charity I support,” she adds, “and I continue to donate money to them and their cause. The charity supports children who have been bullied and trolled online. That’s something I have personally experienced, along with many people in this industry.” Having had a colourful career so far, Mason is far from finished with the industry. With hopes of another TV show on the horizon, we may also see her branch out into presenting very soon. The sun is certainly shining in this part of the county.

SHE ENJOYS COCKTAILS AT PICCOLINO
Ascot Aces DA N I E L L E M A S O N ’ S FAVO U R I T E P I C K S F ROM T H E LO C A L A R E A Where do you love to go out locally? There are probably a couple of places. Piccolino Virginia Water is the best place to go for cocktails [and the Italian food is pretty good too]. Amaiya Ascot is probably the best all round venue, the best girls’ night out place, but they also do amazing roast dinners and top quality sheesh kebabs. What about when you head out with the family? The Look Out Discovery Centre, which is in Bracknell. It’s similar to Go Ape, so the kids love it and there are some amazing walks there. All around where I live are amazing forests, which have been a godsend in recent times. Then, maybe a bit more obvious, but Windsor Castle and the Windsor Park Walk Treks.

Q What is the background story behind Marlow Studios? A Some of my earliest memories are of moviemaking. As a child, I was never happier than when I was watching the latest 007 movie being made right here in Buckinghamshire or helping my grandmother, Dame Celia Johnson, the Oscar-nominated star of Brief Encounter, learn her lines for her next big project. For 20 years I’ve been one of the guardians of my great-uncle Ian Fleming’s James Bond legacy and have commissioned the Young Bond series of novels by Charlie Higson and the sequels to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Frank Cottrell Boyce, who wrote them while creating the opening show for the 2012 Olympics. All my life I’ve lived, breathed, and dreamt movies. To say that building a movie studio is a passion project is an understatement – it’s a lifelong dream, with roots in the careers of my family going back three generations. Q When was the proposed Marlow Studios first mooted? A We’ve been working on this for nearly five years. These projects take forever to plan, but I knew that there wouldn’t be a better place in the world to create an exceptional film studio than here in Marlow. South Bucks has got to be bold if we are going to keep our place at the epicentre of global filmmaking. Q Why is Marlow perfect for a studio like this? A Buckinghamshire is the world epicentre of filmmaking – whether it’s Captain America, or Star Wars, or James Bond, the world’s biggest franchises are shot

here. To make movies you need motivated people, highly-skilled crews and access to global talent. That means you need to be as close as possible to London and Heathrow – just as the other major studios like Pinewood and Shepperton are. British filmmaking in this part of the world is a globally significant asset and Marlow falls right in the heart of this cluster of talent and opportunity. It’s no coincidence that George Clooney, Sam Mendes, Paul Greengrass and Andy Serkis all live close by. This is where the best in the world want to work. Q Marlow Studios aside, you also run English Farm. What can you tell me about that? A The climate and the natural world are at tipping points. We have to work closely with the planet, restoring biodiversity and our landscape. That’s why English Farm is founded on holistic principals producing ethical, sustainable, and delicious food. Our Longhorn cattle live a natural life, restoring soils and creating a wonderful balanced ecosystem. English Farm is a carbon sink, and a haven of biodiversity – so long as I, and the hundreds of people who WALKING BY THE THAMES IN MARLOW IS A TREAT

English Farm always takes a stall, so next time you’re in the neighbourhood come and say hello. You can try our beef and support other local producers at the same time. Q If you had to pick three local places, where would you head to? Thames at Marlow so evocative. For a birthday dinner, The Mash Inn at Bennett End is such a special experience. And watching cricket at Wormsley. It is one of the most magical places in this very beautiful county. Q Do you have a Buckinghamshire secret you are willing to reveal? A The filming of Brief Encounter at Denham was stopped to send the cameras to film the VE celebrations in London, so my grandmother went instead to celebrate outside Buckingham Palace with the crowds. She said in her letters at the time: “We sat on the Victoria Memorial and sang and shouted, ‘We want the King’ and talked to one and all and cheered the King and Queen when they came out.”

“We cannot wait to see the end result of our 4m high Horse Head. It's a monster piece” Q What’s the background story to Elliott of London? A Elliott of London is a thriving haven of hand forged metal artwork. Each piece is initially designed and handmade by myself and my small, devoted team in their sculpture studio on the borders of Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. Every sculpture captures the real movement, character and energy, bringing each piece to life. Q How are things going at the moment? A It has been very busy here at Elliott
of London. We have been creating new sculptures, getting commission sculptures ready for installation, updating stock at the outlets we showcase at – and we’ve even been out at a few exhibitions.

STO RY Charles Elliott, founder of Elliott of London, talks about the unique work he creates on the edge of Buckinghamshire By MARK KEBBLE
Q What’s new from Elliott of London this autumn? A We have some new sculpture designs ready for the autumn including our Beech Seed Sculpture, which is finished in a rustic patina – we love it and have our first one to install very soon. We have also been busy with our bronze sculptures, so there’s a few really exciting ones currently off being cast at the foundry. But our most exciting creation is our 4m high Horse Head – we can not wait to see the end result of this monster piece. Q What can you tell us about the unique features of the bronze sculptures? A Bronze sculptures are timeless, but I think that the methods have changed and evolved over the years. In recent times the patination has modernised bringing in more contemporary colours. Our Kingfisher Bronze, for example, has a lot of coloured patination, whereas our Bronze Show Jumping Horse has a very vintage style of bronze sculpture, with a smooth finish and dark rich coloured patination – the two couldn’t be any more different! The methods of the texture in the bronze world has also grown with so many different ways to finish the sculptures. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

ONE OF THE ACCLAIMED HORSE HEAD SCULPTURES
Q As we head into the festive season, do you get a lot of enquiries/commissions about creating work as a Christmas gift? A We get a few more enquiries coming into the festive period for our interior sculptures and gifts. We have a huge amount of interior art pieces that are affordable and all of them can be adapted to suit each customer’s needs. We welcome these commissions as there’s no better feeling than creating something that’s going to be gifted to someone to keep forever. Q What would you say has been the most unique commission to have come your way in the past? A We’ve been involved in some very heartfelt commissions, which have seriously touched us and that we’ve been honoured to work on. I think one of my favourite commissions was a flock of Blackface Sheep we created for a family fairly local to us. They were great fun and we really enjoyed working on a different method to show the sheep’s wool fleeces. Since we made them, the owner has added to the flock and they now have a few lamb sculptures and a sheep dog sculpture they’ve named Colin! Q How long have you had your studio and gallery in Berkhamsted, and what’s great about the space you have? A We have been here for almost six years. It’s a great space with plenty of room for us to create our larger sculptures. We are lucky enough to be able to welcome people up to see our sculptures and see how we create them. Q What do you love about the Berkhamsted area? A The area is just beautiful, being so close to Ashridge and the Chiltern Hills allows
24
us all to enjoy the wildlife. I love driving into the studio seeing all of that. It’s a lovely town with everything you need in one place. Q When you do get time away from the studio, do you have favourite places in the area to head to? A We have Labradors so dog walks are generally what I head off to do in my spare time. We are lucky to have Albury on the doorstep – we tend to take the dogs for a good walk around there then head to The Greyhound Pub for a good bit of food. We also spend a lot of time at Atkin Grant & Lang Shooting Ground shooting the competitions and practicing. They cater for all abilities and have brilliant facilities. Our new favourite place is Hanako in Berkhamsted, a florist with a twist – you pick what flowers you’d like in your bouquet and while you wait you can enjoy afternoon tea and a glass or two of fizz.
VISIT TO SEE THE SCULPTURES IN SITU
Q What can you tell me about your ambitions for a sculpture park in the area? A This is something we are so keen to get going. Our plan is to invite other sculptors to exhibit their artwork and offer a lovely day out for everyone. We will have our studio there with open days for demonstrations and workshops. We hope to have a café on site and would eventually love to have a really cool glamping site too. he award-winning pyrotechnic team at Titanium will be returning with another dazzling display, set to a spectacular custom soundtrack designed to delight the Beaconsfield crowds. Titanium Fireworks have a welldeserved reputation for delivering stunning pyro-musical displays and are responsible for the design of the two largest displays in the country, London’s New Year’s Eve celebrations (sadly cancelled this year) and Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, so, if you haven’t been to this
26
event before, prepare to be impressed. Once again, there will be two displays to enjoy as the earlier, shorter ‘Little Bang’ display and bonfire, for very young children, returns for its fourth year. This part of the evening will finish at 6pm to make sure that bedtimes can be met for the youngest visitors. With gates opening at 5pm, there will be plenty of time to enjoy the many attractions including a fantastic funfair, Wycombe Wanderers penalty shoot out, and some special on-stage entertainment. This year, the event will welcome some of the stars from Aylesbury Waterside Theatre’s panto, including Nick Jnr’s Gemma Naylor as Cinderella and breakfast radio presenter, Andy Collins, as Buttons.
The main ‘Big Bang’ event will begin at 7.15pm with the lighting of a giant bonfire, before the spectacular musical finale sets the skies ablaze from 7.45pm. The evening wouldn’t be complete without a fantastic array of food and drink options, including wood-fired pizza, BBQ, fish & chips, Caribbean street food, fried chicken, churros & chocolate, Flying Bean Coffee and, of course, a well-stocked beer and wine tent. Beaconsfield Cricket Club is a notfor-profit organisation run by a team of dedicated volunteers. With the help of sponsors, Bovingdons Sales & Lettings, Bewley Homes and Susan Daughtrey Education, all proceeds from the event are used to support sport, health and schools in the local community. The Big Bang, Little Bang organisers are expecting record crowds this year, following the cancellation of most other displays in the area. To avoid disappointment and to take advantage of an advance purchase discount, visit beaconsfieldcricketclubfireworks.com to book early. All advance purchases will be entered into a prize draw to win a family ticket for four, including a meet and greet with the cast, to Cinderella at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre (tickets for the show can be booked at atgtickets.com or by calling 0333 009 6690)

W
hen it was announced back in early December 2020 that Christmas was, effectively, cancelled, many of us saw it as necessary and inevitable. Some could still hold a wonderful family Christmas at home, but many of us missed out on the festive experiences offered all over the county. Little wonder, then, that people and places are coming out all guns blazing this Christmas – and here at Absolutely we are starting early with a round up of the best things to expect on the local scene. Enjoy this special merry go round…
Santa and sustainability at Stubbings There’s a new Christmas shop at Stubbings for the 2021 festive season. They’ve been busy through the year making improvements to their shop area, and there’s a new floor which brightens up the interior and has increased the shopping area significantly. Stubbings is a 36-year-old familyowned business and has one of the largest ranges of Christmas trees in the Thames Valley (see above). No less than eight different varieties will be available in various sizes, in both cut and pot grown formats. The trees are UK sourced wherever possible and are always the very best, premium quality. Now open, the Christmas Boutique is a treasure trove of wonderful decorations, and fun toys for the kids. You’ll find stunning home decorations and baubles in all colours and sizes from loved designers such as Gisela Graham, Giftware Trading and A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

many more. There’s also an amazing range of Christmas lights (indoor and outdoor) to lighten up your home. Whilst the global pandemic rages on, it is important not to forget our responsibilities to the environment. You can shop at Stubbings safe in the knowledge that for each festive tree sold a tree will be planted in the Amazon region through a relationship with the charity ‘One Tree Planted’. Also, back by popular demand, they are running their festive ‘Breakfast with Santa’ event on a number of mornings through the Christmas season. On the weekend of 27-28 November some of Santa’s Reindeer helpers will be visiting the Nursery to say hello. More information and ticketing can be found at stubbingsnursery.co.uk

Head to Christmas Common The Tree Barn at Christmas Common, (yes, that’s really the name of the village!) in Oxfordshire is so much more than a barn full of trees. This year they celebrate 50 years as a family-run business and continue to offer a vast range of Christmas trees, wreaths, decorations, lights and Christmas gifts to delight all the family. It's a festive experience like no other. The Tree Barn believe that choosing a Christmas tree should be a magical experience the whole family can enjoy, rather than merely something to tick off your list. As a passionate advocate for a more sustainable way of living, they are proud stockists of eco-friendly Christmas products such as biodegradable wrapping paper and eco-friendly glitter, because Christmas should create joy, not unnecessary waste. The Tree Barn shop opens its doors on 30 October this year and trees are available to buy from 20 November. You can also order festive wreaths, trees and stands online from the 30 October to be delivered locally from the 24 November. Find out more and plan your visit at thetreebarn.co.uk

Lighting up Newbury Visit Newbury has confirmed that a three-day Victorian Christmas Fayre will be coming to the area this year. Taking place across the first weekend of December, the fayre is set to include a wide range of market stalls with traders dressed head-to-toe in typical Victorian attire, alongside Victorian-themed roving performers and, of course, Father Christmas, helping to make this a truly unforgettable event for Newbury. Before that, however, will be the annual Christmas Lights SwitchOn, which will be extended into a day-long festival of free workshops, activities and entertainment for the first time this year. On Saturday 20 November, local families and residents are invited to come and spend the day in Newbury town centre for a whole host of festive fun. Between 10am and 5pm, visitors can enjoy a full programme of over 20 free festive activities at select venues across the town centre. From 5pm, live entertainment and performances will occupy a screened stage in the Market Place in the lead-up to the highly anticipated Christmas Lights Switch-On. “There’s no butcher’s out there with a previous head chef of a two Michelin-star giving customers cooking advice”
I
t’s the week after The Butcher’s Tap & Grill in Marlow opened its revamped doors and Jamie May, the venue’s new executive chef and butcher, is feeling rather content. “It couldn’t have gone better,” he grins about the various launch events held. “Saturday was amazing. I put the first steak on the grill at 11.45am and then we turned it off at 9.30pm. There was a nice constant flow. One gentleman came in and he wanted a two and a half kilo cote de boeuf, which took an hour to cook. It was magical and exactly what we wanted it to be.” This is a butcher’s shop, but not as you know it. Customers are able to go in, choose a prime cut of meat – 100% British cuts on offer include 28-day, dry-aged, grass-fed beef from HG Walter; naturally-reared pork from Blythburgh Pigs; Longland Farm Duck; Suffolk Texel Lamb and more – watch it being cooked to order, and then sit down to enjoy it with a locally brewed pint or glass of wine. It’s latest treat from Tom Kerridge’s foodie stable, and as May says: “He saw the potential for the space. We have the butcher’s counter where you can buy the most amazing meat, we have got the grill, so how do we bring those together? That’s where I come on board.”
JAMIE MAY IS LOOKING FORWARD TO OFFERING COOKING TIPS TO CUSTOMERS
THE BUTCHER’S TAP & GRILL OFFERS SEATING SO YOU CAN ENJOY YOUR COOKED MEAT WITH A PINT
May has a slightly rock star look about him, and he’s certainly had a rock and roll career to date. He has gone from working in America, to stints in London with industry stalwarts Gordon Ramsay and Anthony Demetre, before heading out to Australia – when Marlow called. “Back then we had just Staff Canteen as a chefs’ forum and it just happened they filmed Tom cooking a cod dish with hazelnuts and Jerusalem artichoke. I loved the video and wanted to work at Michelin level, but not in a fine dining restaurant in London. I sent my CV to every one-star venue outside of London, The Hand and Flowers got back to me, I flew back to England to do my trial on a Thursday and started the following Monday. That was ten and a half years ago.” He quickly made a name for himself at the two Michelin-star Marlow pub, working his way up to the head chef position two years ago. “I love every brick
of that building,” he says warmly. “Tom and Beth [Cullen-Kerridge] are like a second family to me. I feel very lucky to have been part of the journey of us growing as a group, and this is the next chapter in my exciting career for Tom Kerridge. “This is obviously very different from what I have been doing for the last ten years,” he says on The Butcher’s Tap & Grill, “but what’s invaluable here are my skills in cooking a piece of meat, respecting it, sourcing it, and giving advice to a customer about how to cook it at home. Yes, we want people to come into the Tap, choose some meat and we cook it for them, but I also want to give them advice on how to cook their Sunday roast at home. At the end of the day, I want people to enjoy cooking. There’s no butcher’s out there that has a previous head chef of a two Michelin-star giving them advice not only on how to cook meat, but if they are sitting in the pub having it cooked for them.” A key element of the offering at The Butcher’s Tap & Grill is that it’s very much a pub. “Outside we have got the definition of a butcher’s, the definition of a taproom and the definition of a grill – and it’s all those three spaces in one,” May says. “You can come in and buy your meat, you can come in and have a pint of local Rebellion ale, and also you can sit down and have that meat cooked for you with your pint of Rebellion. Tom is always thinking of the next idea, he’s never stagnant and that’s the amazing thing working for him. Everyone is really excited with this whole new chapter.” T H E B U TC H E R ’ S TA P & G R I L L 15 Spittal Street, Marlow, SL7 3HJ 01628 401 535 thebutcherstapandgrill.co.uk

Sesamecrusted feta and sun blush tomatoes on rosemary skewers Serves 8
‘Everything is betta with feta,’ says Tara, voted the number one feta fan of all time, and, to be fair, she might be right. We try really hard not to show cheese favouritism (cheesism), but we’d be lying if we didn’t admit that feta makes a prominent appearance in the OTK fridge, its salty, tangy properties lending it well to multiple preparations. This dish is a little bit sweet, a lotta bit salty, a tiny bit bitter and a whole bit crispy. It’s exactly what you’d serve for brunch (with bacon, if you like) and not much else, as it really is quite rich.
INGREDIENTS •2 blocks of Greek feta (360g), each cut into 4 triangles (8 triangles in total) •3 5g rice flour (or plain flour if gluten-free flour not needed) • 1 large egg, well beaten • 1 00g mixed black and white sesame seeds, lightly toasted •2 tbsp olive oil •0 .5 tbsp picked lemon thyme leaves, or regular thyme leaves Syrup • 1 20g runny honey • 1 tsp ground black lime(optional) •3 lemons: 1 juiced to get 1 tbsp and the other 2 left whole

1 Line a shallow baking dish (or baking tray with a slight lip), about 30cm x 20cm in size, with baking parchment. 2 Pat dry the feta pieces, then dip each piece in the flour, gently shaking off the excess. Coat in the egg, followed by the sesame seeds, making sure the feta pieces are completely coated. Transfer each piece to your prepared dish and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or longer if time allows. 3 Preheat the oven to 220C fan. Drizzle the coated feta pieces with the oil and bake from cold, for 18 minutes, very gently flipping the pieces over halfway, or until golden and warmed through. 4 While the feta is baking, put the honey and black lime, if using, into a small saucepan on a medium-high heat. Once it starts to bubble, turn the heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally, until it turns a deep amber caramel, about 6–7 minutes. Take off the heat and stir in the lemon juice. Set aside to cool for 5 minutes. 5 Use a small, sharp knife to peel and segment the remaining two lemons and stir the segments into the cooled honey mixture. 6 When ready, pour the lemon syrup directly over the feta in the baking dish, sprinkle with the thyme and serve at once, straight from the dish.

• 11 garlic cloves, peeled, 10 left whole and 1 crushed • 30g fresh ginger, peeled and julienned • 400g datterini or regular cherry tomatoes • 3 red chillies, mild or spicy, a slit cut down their length • 1 tbsp tomato paste • 2 tsp cumin seeds, roughly crushed with a pestle and mortar • 2 tsp coriander seeds, roughly crushed with a pestle and mortar • 0.5 tsp ground turmeric • 0.5 tsp chilli flakes • 2 tsp red Kashmiri chilli powder • 1 tsp caster sugar • 200ml olive oil • 180g Greek-style yoghurt • 15g picked mint leaves • 30g fresh coriander, roughly chopped • 2–3 limes: juiced to get 1 tbsp and the rest cut into wedges To serve • salt
METHOD Preheat the oven to 150ÅãC fan. Put the chickpeas, whole garlic cloves, ginger, tomatoes, chillies, tomato paste, spices, sugar, oil and 1 teaspoon of salt into a large saut. pan, for which you have a lid, and mix everything together to combine. Cover with the lid, transfer to the oven and cook for 75 minutes, stirring halfway through, until the aromatics have softened and the tomatoes have nicely broken down. 3 Meanwhile, put the yoghurt, mint, fresh coriander, lime juice, crushed garlic and . teaspoon of salt into a food processor and blitz until smooth and the herbs are finely chopped. 4 Serve the chickpeas directly from the pan, with the yoghurt and lime wedges alongside. 1

Confit tandoori chickpeas Serves 4
These chickpeas have had their fair share of Insta fame for a multitude of reasons. The first being that the simplicity of the dish makes it really
quite attractive: throw everything into a pan and pop it into the oven, leaving it to its own devices (and you to yours). The second being that slow-cooking the chickpeas in oil without added liquid makes them super soft, allowing all the aromatics to break down into the oil. Lastly, this dish can easily be made ahead and served later; it only improves with time. Swap out Greek yoghurt with a non-dairy alternative for a completely vegan meal, and serve with rice.
INGREDIENTS • 2 tins of chickpeas (800g), drained (480g)

KATE WINSER
Q&A A - L I S T E X P E R I E N C E Ever since she launched her own brand, Kate Winser has attracted a host of superstars to promote her designs, with Cat Deeley the latest to join the roster. Here we find out why By MARK KEBBLE
Q Let’s rewind to 2013 – what inspired you to launch your own brand? A I was passionate about supporting busy women with beautiful quality clothes that give confidence, flatter figures, and make for an easier work to weekend life with fashion right style. Q What did you want to offer and why did you think it would make you stand out? A Having led several luxury brands, I wanted to bring super luxe yarns fabrics to women at more affordable prices. Our pure cashmere Scottish knitwear is not only good for the world, as sustainable and recycled, but closer to £200 than many in luxury at £1000+! Q Has anything changed with your ethos since? A I remain energised to offer something special. We put all our value into the very best fabrics, we cut patterns for every size to help flatter and we love fashion but investment fashion, trends that will stay with us – the opposite to fast fashion. Q How do you look back on the eight years since you launched? A When I see our designs being worn by the most impressive women in the world – from Emma Watson, Olivia Colman, Gillian Anderson – to numerous features

in Vogue and Harper’s, and now shipping to 76 countries worldwide, I feel proud. Exhausted some days, but super proud. Q Can you define your style? A I’m inspired by a mix of Lauren Bacall
and my mum! They both had super easy, yet sharp style, never trying too hard but finding what suited their figures and their lifestyles. Not sure I achieve it every day, but my style is my own. I’d call it modern classic. Q What kind of experience do you offer at your boutiques? A We offer a selection of our collection and constantly add new designs. The team are wonderful, hand-picked for their passion and talent by our head of retail, Torly, who is a super ex-Harrods buyer. We offer one to one special styling sessions and if desired our head of design, Jayne, will offer a styling event to small groups. Q Has it been lovely opening them again and seeing clients face to face? A Just excellent. I think I was one of the first customers in each store and it has been super to meet some of our customers over the past few weeks. Q We will be focusing on the Cat Deeley collection in this issue. What can you tell us about it? A All hand knitted in Scotland, each piece is like art, made over many days each, they should be kept and passed through generations, like an heirloom. I know they are not priced for everyone, but for some they will become a true favourite. I just love the poncho.
“THE CAT DEELEY COLLECTION SHOULD BE KEPT AND PASSED THROUGH GENERATIONS, LIKE AN HEIRLOOM” Q Have you enjoyed working with Cat? A I can say without hesitation yes, I have
loved it. She is genuinely a lovely warm, talented woman and wonderful mother, and Patrick, her husband, is great fun too. Q She’s the latest in a line of celebrities who have partnered with you. How do you build those relationships? A I like to work with celebrities I respect, real women who have achieved a great deal. Life is short and my brand is very important to me, so working with amazing women adding a touch of their passion and style to the brand is amazing, popular and I’m glad to say successful too.
Q Finally, what’s next? A Too many things to share today! We have
some delicious new designs this AW21, some are with respect to the circular economy so using fabrics already made for a luxury brand catwalk show, and we don’t like to see them wasted, such beautiful fabrics and yarns. The maxi trench coat is amazing and some sumptuous knitwear will be arriving too. We have our latest photoshoot booked and will be shooting Alek Malek again, who is herself a catwalk model, and also the stunning Cecilia Chancellor – hard to believe she will be 55 this year. winserlondon.com

“OUR AMBITION IS FOR EVERYONE TO HAVE A MEMORABLE LUXURY EXPERIENCE”
A
fter months of anticipation, the hoardings are finally down, to reveal the smart monochrome exterior of the new Goldsmiths showroom at The Oracle. The showroom reveals a whole new interiors concept, offering clients a brand new luxury shopping experience – from its dynamic new design, through to the service, hospitality, and the exceptional line up of luxury timepieces and fine-jewellery brands it offers. Goldsmiths has created a luxury retail environment for the future that perfectly combines the best names in Swiss watchmaking alongside world-renowned jewellery brands, expert service, and a bright, modern luxury store interior.
With its white-washed oak timber, which is contrasted with white terrazzo and blackened steel, the design creates a light, uncluttered space that feels luxurious but not intimidating; a place where you can spend time deciding on that perfect timepiece or ideal engagement ring, while enjoying the showroom’s hospitality or checking out the VIP area. The beautiful showroom houses a gorgeous collection of leading Swiss timepiece brands, including exclusive watches from a number of world-famous brands. You’ll have the chance to try on or even buy such amazing models like the dramatic and enduring OMEGA Constellation 41mm Sedna™ gold model with its polished blue ceramic bezel and blue leather, or the smart and sophisticated Hublot Spirit of Big Bang King Gold Blue watch, with its wonderful combination of luscious rose gold and rich blue tones, and blue rubber and alligator leather strap. It’s not just the stunning watch collection that will draw the crowds, with their gorgeous collection of diamond jewellery, Brightest Diamonds, which is exclusive to Goldsmiths and features its very own proprietary stone cut. This Goldsmiths’ stone has 88 facets – 30 more than a standard stone, which it has used in three wonderfully romantic engagement ring collections as well as eternity rings, earrings, and necklaces. Thanks to the additional facets, cut into an innovative pattern unique to Goldsmiths, brilliance, fire, and scintillation are all amped up in these stones, which means they have superior sparkle – and each piece comes with its own certificate. The new opening is a great addition to Reading, and perfectly timed for those looking for a special Christmas gift for loved ones, or a treat for themselves. The showroom features dedicated areas for brands such as Rolex, OMEGA, Breitling, Tudor and Hublot, as well
as gorgeous jewellery from the likes of FOPE, Gucci, Roberto Coin, and Goldsmiths’ sister brand Mappin & Webb, all carefully curated, and creatively displayed, to maximise temptation. “This is a significant milestone for Goldsmiths,” says Craig Bolton, executive director of the Watches of Switzerland Group. “Luxury today has become far more relaxed, inclusive, and experiential, so while we are elevating the Goldsmiths brand position, our goal is to make everyone feel valued and at home when visiting our showrooms. Our ambition is for everyone to have a memorable luxury experience long after they’ve made their purchase. We believe the repositioning and new showroom concept will transform not just the Goldsmiths’ profile and experience, but also brings some fresh life to our high streets.” GOLDSMITHS The Oracle Centre, 21D Hollybrook Walk, Reading RG1 2AQ 0118 9513001 goldsmiths.co.uk

“Its unusual name reflects the fact it is a perfect companion for any time of day”
WATCH Head to Berry’s in Windsor to take in the latest in feminine elegance from Patek Philippe
this
S
ince 1839, Patek Philippe has devoted much attention to its feminine clientele. With its pocket and pendant watches, decorated with artisanal techniques, the brand won the hearts of sophisticated female customers. The manufacture also leveraged its creative skills with a host of complicated ladies’ watches, including minute repeaters. In 1999, Patek Philippe responded to the expectations of a young, dynamic generation with the very feminine Twenty~4 collection, which became resoundingly successful. Its unusual name reflects the fact that it is a perfect companion for any time of day or night, proposed in diamondset rose gold or stainless steel versions and endowed with a quartz movement.
Patek Philippe unveiled a surprising twist in 2018 with the launch of the Twenty~4 Automatic. This series of self-winding mechanical ladies’ watches was the first model of the Twenty~4 collection with a round case and the calibre 324 S C. This self-winding movement with a Spiromax® balance spring in Silinvar® is a gem of precision and dependability. It is crafted to the strict standards of the Patek Philippe Seal and exhibits elaborate manual finishing that can be admired through the sapphirecrystal case back. The Twenty~4 Automatic focuses on the woman who consummately handles latest-generation technology, but prefers a mechanical timepiece on her wrist, one that represents a grand tradition of quality and the lasting value of an artistically crafted masterpiece. The Twenty~4 Automatic collection features three stainless steel models with either a blue, grey or olive green dial highlighted by a sunburst finish, and a total of three 18ct rose gold versions with a choice of a silvery, vertical and horizontal satin-finished dial, a rose gilt sunburst dial, or a brown sunburst dial. Each timepiece is characterised by its Arabic numeral hour track, date window at 6 o’clock, and a scintillating diamondset bezel. In addition to this, a brown and silver dial option is also available with extra diamonds set into the bezel, the bracelet, and the crown, along with a breathtakingly beautiful 18ct rose gold diamond-encrusted variation with gems showered across the dial for added finesse and decadence. The Patek Philippe Twenty~4 Collection is available to view at Berry’s Jewellers. MIND & BODY
he foggy brain, lack of sleep, irritability, lack of sex drive, anxiety, hot sweats are just some of the things that every woman over the age of 40 are likely to experience. Menopause is not something that your mother just went through! It’s something that all women will experience and yet there seems to be a reluctance to acknowledge it, a taboo discussing it, and a lack of understanding of how to alleviate it. Two doctors who had specialized in fertility, which today is well catered for, and who had started experiencing some perimenopause symptoms themselves, were aware that already stretched GPs didn’t have the resources nor were given the training on how best to treat it. So, realising this gap in the medical industry, they decided to set up the Oxford Hormone Clinic to help women understand what they may be going through and look to provide a range of bespoke treatments from prescribing HRT, to acupuncture and advice on nutrition and lifestyle. Recognising that women have a hectic work and home life they decided to offer face to face consultations in Banbury Road, Oxford, and online via Zoom, to make sure every women anywhere had the opportunity to meet with them. So if at any time you think things may not be 100%, check out their free symptom test which you can find on their home page at oxfordhormoneclinic. com. A COMMON SYMPTOM OF MENOPAUSE ARE HOT FLUSHES
T I M E TO SHARE Why we should all be talking about menopause a lot more By DR SELENA LANGDON
T
he word menopause itself instils a thought of dread for most. It is something women all over the world go through, yet something we do not actually talk about. This is beginning to change, but there is so much room for improvement. Let us have the conversation and make it as open as possible so that women can feel confident sharing their experiences and helping one another through this transition. Menopause itself is a diagnosis of the absence of periods for 12 months. However, most women find the time leading to this the most difficult. This is perimenopause
and can last months to years. On average most women find they become menopausal in their late 40s or early 50s. But for some, this can be much earlier or later. Common symptoms include a change in the menstrual cycle, worsening PMS, irritability, anxiety, flushes, night sweats, reduced sex drive, sleep changes, and overbearing fatigue. Some may also find abdominal weight gain, breast tenderness, vaginal dryness, dry skin, hair loss, and brain fog. So how can you find out if you are menopausal? Symptoms give us a big clue, but in addition, a hormonal profile will help confirm the diagnosis. Hormones are essential for all bodily
functions and slight imbalances can wreak havoc on our wellbeing. Oestrogen is responsible for ripening and releasing our eggs, nourishes tissues including skin keeping it supple and elastic, it works to regulate bone levels, controls cholesterol, and keeps your heart, liver, and brain functioning well. Progesterone is our progestation hormone. It actively boosts feelings of calmness, helps us relax and sleep, improves mood, and is essential for pregnancy. Testosterone is associated with men. However, it is an essential hormone for women, helping them feel energized, assertive, turns fat to muscle, and increases sex drive. During perimenopause, we may find low levels will lead to fatigue, low mood, reduced muscle, low sex drive, incontinence, and a lack of motivation. Hormones need to be balanced for optimal wellbeing and there are many ways we can help ourselves do this. For instance, small tweaks to diet, exercise both weight-bearing and meditative, reducing alcohol, stopping smoking, and reducing stress can all help. Phytoestrogens can be taken to reduce some symptoms including flushes alongside supplements like vitamin D, omega 3, and magnesium. T I M E TO A DAPT How to work with your cycle, not against it
E
ver found yourself struggling to workout at certain times of the month? Or, one day you’re hitting PBs and the next, you can barely lift a dumbbell? It might be time to start adapting your workout routine to your monthly cycle. Exercising and the menstrual cycle are often confused and thought to be something that cannot be mixed – which is not the case says, Lucy Gornall, PT and head of wellness at Puresport. “Your menstrual cycle is split into four phases, across a time period of roughly 28 days,” she says. “Day one kicks off your
period, AKA your menstrual phase. Then, the follicular phase spans from around days 5 to 13, followed by the ovulatory phase on days 14 to 16 and finally the luteal phase, which runs across days 17 to 28. “During the menstrual phase, the hormones progesterone and oestrogen are at their lowest. You might struggle with energy levels, so walking, yoga and Pilates are good choices. “With oestrogen rising during the follicular phase, your energy starts to peak and morning workouts should feel a lot easier. With all this energy, try opting for more cardio-based workouts like running and cycling.
“The ovulatory phase is your most fertile time, and your energy peaks around this time. So jump on the HIIT bandwagon; short, sharp and sweet works well here. “However, if ovulation pains creep in, taking a walk or stretching with a yoga session can help. “As oestrogen declines and progesterone rises during the luteal phase, you might go from feeling energetic, to lethargic and fatigued as this continues. So while energy is high, keep up the cardio, but as energy declines and those dreaded PMS symptoms kick in, opt for short resistancebased workouts and yoga.”

As the name suggests, Country House Weddings’ stunning venues and teams are exclusively dedicated to weddings – it’s all they do. Their venues are not hotels, or corporate event centres (although they might do the odd film shoot), they have been handpicked and refurbished specifically as perfect wedding venues – your home for your special day. Expect exceptional (and award-winning) customer service – including your very own personal wedding manager. They have no fewer than 25 industry accolades between their six venues (and two of them only opened in the last two years) from the industry’s two largest and most prestigious awards: the UK Wedding Awards and the British Wedding Awards. They pride themselves on outstanding customer service to their couples, starting with their personal wedding managers who are there to hold your hand from six months before your day, right through the day itself – they even sleep at the venue so that they are there in the morning to see you off.

There is no need for ‘carriages at midnight’, residents can retire to the library for a night cap, or three if they are that way inclined… Let us not forget about their honeymoon suites. Adorned with four poster beds, luxurious features and fittings, and a perfect large bath or hot tub to soak in at the end of the day, the honeymoon suites are designed to provide a night as memorable as your day. DENTAL IMPLANTS
To restore your smile, dental implants are the modern teeth replacement solution ranging from a single tooth to multiple teeth. The four step process – consultation, surgery, healing and crown fitting – typically takes three to six months, but can be much longer for some patients.

A
great smile is a wonderful asset – improving our confidence and making a powerful impression on people. A good smile increases happiness both in yourself and those around you. With your wedding day on the horizon and you due to be centre stage with cameras snapping as never before, you will no doubt be unusually conscious of how you look and what your smile says about you. Rest assured there is a lot that can be achieved! At their modern, state-of-the-art clinic in Crown Wood, Bracknell in Berkshire, Dr Chi-Yuen Wong and the team of highly skilled clinicians and support staff are at hand to provide a warm welcome coupled with comprehensive consultation. Their diagnosis, advice and recommendations for improving your smile is what you can expect. There are plenty of options ranging from simple and effective tooth whitening to straightening crooked teeth for a perfectly aligned smile – it’s amazing what can be achieved.
LESS THAN TWO MONTHS TO THE BIG DAY
Another great way of replacing one or more natural missing teeth, a fixed bridge is usually recommended where there are fewer teeth to replace, or when the missing teeth are only on one side of the mouth.
TOOTH WHITENING
VENEERS
COMPOSITE BONDING
SIX MONTHS PLUS BEFORE YOUR BIG DAY
For a sparkling smile, whitening can safely remove discolouration and lighten the colour of your teeth. Options include home whitening, in-surgery laser teeth whitening or a combination. Fix small gaps between teeth, chipped, cracked, crooked or uneven teeth. The treatment is simple, non-invasive and can be carried out in a single appointment. CROWNS
A dental crown is a toothshaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth to cover and restore its shape and size, giving it a natural appearance. They are ideal for teeth that have been broken or have been weakened by decay or a large filling. DENTAL HYGIENE
Either a ‘classic’ hygiene appointment or an ‘advanced’ hygiene session for patients with heavier staining, a hygiene appointment can put the finishing touches on your perfect wedding smile.
Used to dramatically improve the appearance of front teeth that are stained, chipped or misaligned, veneers are made from porcelain. They look just like real teeth.
INVISALIGN CLEAR ALIGNERS
Innovative teeth straightening provides comfort and convenience, with great results typically within 6 to 18 months. Even if there isn’t quite enough time to complete a course of smile-perfecting brace treatment before your wedding day, many brides begin their treatment and as a removable brace solution, they can be left out for the big day. It’s likely that you’ll still see a significant improvement even in the early stages of treatment. of the agreement (which means having had full financial disclosure from each other); • It must not be unfair to uphold the parties to their agreement in the circumstances at the time of the divorce. Pre-nuptial agreements are more likely to be upheld in short marriages, as there is less chance of the agreement having become out of date or superseded by unforeseen events.
Forward THINKING Pre-nuptial agreements – should you get one? B y R AY D E N S O L I C I T O R S
W
hen couples get engaged and start planning their future together, there are a multitude of things to consider. Throughout the excitement the trickier subject of finances and assets, and how to manage or protect them, is often overlooked – unsurprising perhaps, in the flush of love and wedding prep. However, though it might seem unromantic, discussing your options is sensible. We are increasingly seeing couples who recognise that, in the sad event their marriage doesn’t last, a pre-nuptial agreement could ensure financial aspects of separation are less painful. People often say, ‘pre-nups aren’t
worth the paper they are written on are they?’ Well, not necessarily so, but as with many things in law, the answer isn’t straightforward. While there is no legislation dealing with pre-nuptial agreements in the UK, there is a growing body of case law. The law in England currently states that pre-nuptial agreements are not automatically binding. However, if properly prepared, they may well be upheld. So what does this mean? One of the most well-known cases, Radmacher v Granatino, sets out the key criteria for a pre-nuptial to be capable of being upheld in the event of divorce or separation: • The agreement must be freely entered into (including with each party taking independent legal advice); • The parties must fully understand the implications
Couples considering a prenuptial agreement should each seek independent legal advice and do what they can to ensure that the agreement is done properly. This will provide a greater chance of the agreement being upheld. Contrary to popular opinion, pre-nups are not just for the rich and famous. Whilst they are often used to protect the assets of a wealthy party, couples of more modest means are increasingly drawing up prenuptial agreements. Reasons for doing so might include: protecting inherited wealth, safeguarding future inheritance, retaining control of a business, providing for children from a previous relationship, even protection from liability for an outstanding debt. So getting a pre-nuptial agreement could prove to be a very sensible decision, providing clarity, security and peace of mind – and even saving money on future legal costs. 01494 350333 enquiries@raydensolicitors.co.uk rayd en solicit ors .co.uk

I
wanted to go to art college in my youth, but my parents wouldn’t allow it. I subsequently got a ‘proper job’ and flew as cabin crew for BEA and British Airways for over 20 years. Circumstances meant that I had to change careers midlife and so felt the time was right to take those qualifications in fashion and interior design that I had always wanted to do. I then taught both subjects for City and Guilds at the local adult education college for a while. I tested the water from my back bedroom as most people do whilst still doing the tutoring. There seemed to be an appetite and as I was going to have to make this my second career, as retirement was some way off, it made sense to be really serious about it. The time was then right to take a leap of faith and so, in 2004, I refurbished a building in Crowthorne – and Koubou Interiors was born. Taking on the premises and refurbishing was a huge commitment, but after a while I was able to give up the tutoring and concentrate on building the business. We were doing our branding and wanted a name that looked good in a logo and had a ring about it. I had a Japanese design assistant at the time, and she suggested the name. As with all Japanese names, depending on the inflection, they can mean
“We don't design to any prescribed formula” several different things. For example, nice design/home, workshop or studio, but the name can also mean rise and fall, so I think you just have to take your pick. We can take a project from the initial idea all the way through to completion. Spacial planning, drawings etc are all done in house and we have several architects we work with so that the process through planning (if required) is seamless. We don’t design to any prescribed formula, we work with the client to bring forth their ideas, likes and dislikes (even if they don’t know them yet!) to get the finished project that they love and want to live or work in. We design all our own joinery and bespoke fixtures and fittings, so the kitchen, bathroom etc can all be designed and specified at the studio. We will co-ordinate the building/installation phase of the project if the client requires and can suggest contractors if asked. We are also happy to work with the client’s chosen architect and contractor. We have worked on a number of large projects where we are part of a much bigger team brought together by the client. This tends to be more the case with commercial projects, but not unusual on larger residential projects. Historically, we have worked on a mix of commercial and residential projects with the larger proportion probably in
the commercial sector. I think this is more about being approached by clients because we have a particular expertise and because of recommendation by previous clients. Covid has turned everything on its head and I would say that nearly all of our projects are residential projects at the current time. The commercial sector is very flat at the moment and I don’t see that improving in the immediate future. Being flexible is key and we are lucky that we have the expertise and experience to undertake a broad spectrum of project type.

The brief is key. Time spent on taking and developing the brief is the most important element in my view. Building a relationship and trust with the client is terribly important as well. There is a very different approach between residential and commercial projects, however. For our residential clients we offer an hour’s free consultation in our studio to work on that brief and get to know the client. This is someone’s home, probably the most expensive asset they own and it is more personal – they will live and grow as a family in the space. With a commercial client we would need to understand how the space is working – or not. This space is all about making a return for the client, so observing and asking the right questions is more key here. Yes, it is about the look, but there are more complex elements to consider with commercial spaces and a lot more regulation if it is a public space that has to be considered. I would say that healthcare is our speciality, and it is also my passion. Many years ago, I was asked to do some work at a local NHS hospital. It was well received and over the next ten years, we did a lot of work there. Subsequently to this, we were asked to design the interiors for a private hospital that dealt primarily with mental health, so not a clinical hospital. Many things had to be considered; for example anti-ligature

“I would say healthcare is our specialty and it is also my passion” together with a five-star feel as many of the patients were being treated over many months and in some cases years. We also designed a centre for children with special needs about the same time. Adapting client’s homes due to ageing, dementia or life-changing injury is also a project
sector we undertake. Dental surgeries are also a sector we historically work in. Designing for dementia is a particular interest for me and I often give talks and write articles on the subject. There has to be a very particular understanding to work in the healthcare sector, it is so easy to get it wrong. Understanding clinical need, regulation and the very particular cognitive changes especially with clients with dementia requires knowledge and skill. We have been recognised with a host of awards, which mean a great deal to me. I am particularly proud of the award ‘Best Public Service Building’ we won for the children’s centre we worked on. Obviously, the pandemic has meant that there haven’t been any awards for the last couple of years and it has been difficult to finish projects to be able to submit, but hopefully that will change and we will be able to submit and hopefully win again in the future.
Gilly Craft on the Bracknell community and memorable local projects How long have you been based in Bracknell? We moved here very recently, in June. What do you like most about the area? We have moved to Moss End Village, which is a community. There are other businesses that are complementary to ours and I hope we can grow collaborations going forward. If possible, could you pick out three projects in Berkshire or Buckinghamshire that stand out for you and explain why? One is an Orthodontics practice, which was the transformation of the upper floor that had just been storage and offices before. The client wanted to grow his business by creating a private suite to complement the NHS practice that was on the ground floor. The building had many challenges, which we managed to overcome. The second is a refurbishment of the ground floor of a house in Ascot. We had Covid to contend with throughout, which made things very challenging. We totally transformed the space from what it was before. The third is a small project, a lounge in Sandhurst. The design really worked well and the space looked so much larger even with putting in a new fire/fireplace and joinery the length of the room. The joinery design I am particularly proud of.

A ANDREW MARTIN
dding warm colours to your interiors is a great way to make your living space cosier and the recently launched paint range from Andrew Martin has a great collection of bold autumnal colours to help create a warm and relaxing ambience. As well as on the walls, introduce colours through soft furnishings too. I love textured fabrics and a combination of different size cushions in different hues and patterns mixed with warm throws is incredibly inviting. Soft velvets, which are incredibly tactile, are great to relax into, and swapping an old coffee table for a luxurious ottoman would work brilliantly as a foot rest. Small sofa tables work well with this look, allowing you to fully relax but still have your drink to hand. Natural wood adds warmth too, a bookshelf with some favourite books and accessories will create a very welcoming space. I also am a great fan of rugs, especially in the colder weather. They add colour, impact, are soft underfoot and also add a layer of insulation on a colder floor. Layering rugs gives a sense of cosiness and comfort too. Curtains and blinds are also great insulation for windows and add comfort and colour; a draughty door deserves a luxurious door curtain to keep the heat in. Real fires are perfect if you can have

one – otherwise there are some very realistic ones on the market that look quite authentic and even have the sound of crackling logs, perfect for a quiet night in. Consider mood enhancing candles to add instant warmth – lavender and camomile, frankincense or sandalwood are all calming and relaxing scents, perfect after a long day; or try a few unscented ones dotted around in glass containers, or a group of different height candles in one place look stunning. Plants and flowers bring nature indoors and will enhance the cosiness of your home. Lighting is more important than ever at this time of year as the evenings get shorter. As well as layering lighting with ceiling, wall lights and table lamps, it’s also a great idea to have dimmable, warm-glow lightbulbs to create the right ambience. LED lighting can add a warm glow in shelving or coving and creates a much softer light than an overhead one. But if it’s drama you’re after, strategically placed uplights behind a sofa or TV will cast an atmospheric glow onto your walls. Place a floor lamp beside a wing chair for the perfect place to curl up and read a book – add cushions and a throw, a side table for your drink and a cosy rug under your feet and you will find you’re drawn there, now and possibly throughout the coming year! sandrarothwellinteriors.com

BEYOND BROADBAND PROBLEMS WATCHING ON MULTIPLE SCREENS CAN BE A THING OF THE PAST
T I M E F O R A N U P G R A D E Why Swish Fibre will ensure all the family can enjoy technology – without the arguments
Y
ou may not need to fork out for a fortune to level-up your screen: it may be as simple as upgrading your broadband package to a Full Fibre provider. With an array of models and price-points available from dozens of manufacturers, the growing demand for all things on-demand has introduced an added complication. Even if you’ve just shelled out a four-figure sum on a top-ofthe-range TV, you’re far from guaranteed to get your ‘bang for your buck’ in return.
PICTURE THIS You’ve just taken delivery of a brand new 4K OLED TV, complete with super-rich HDR and a whopping refresh-rate to boot. You quickly fire up Netflix to watch The Crown in glorious Ultra 4K, only to be left bemused
with the quality of image on display. Chances are that your broadband has let the side down and forced Netflix to downgrade your stream to a level that wavers somewhere between SD and HD picture quality as your kids surf or play online at the same time.
NO-MAN'S LAND Poor broadband can leave your TV in no-man’s land, especially if picture quality and keeping the whole family entertained across multiple screens is your thing. UK broadband usage more than doubled last year, and we all know more than ever how important a fast and reliable service following lockdowns and most people now homeworking. Your so-called ‘Fibre’ connection may have been bearable in the past, but it’s more likely that this same Part Fibre connection is now hampering your household due to the limitations of the copper-wire telephone line.
If you live in Great Missenden, Hazlemere, Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, Bourne End, Flackwell Heath, Marlow, Ascot, Sunninghill and Sunningdale there’s a solution available for you now or coming along soon. Swish Fibre uses 100% Full Fibre connection straight into the heart of your home to boost blistering speeds and reliability unlike Part Fibre services that you’re likely to currently have with major broadband providers.
Watch 180 High-Definition (HD) streams concurrently Compared to 7 concurrent streams via the current UK average speed. Netflix recommends a 5 Mbps connection to view 1 HD stream.
• Watch 36 Ultra HD (4K) streams concurrently on Netflix Compared to 1 concurrent streams via the current UK average speed. Netflix recommends a 25 Mbps connection to view one 4k stream.
•
Download all 8 seasons of Game of Thrones in 4K in 2.5 hours Compared to 61 hours (2.5 days) via the current UK average speed. Total download size 975 Gb for around 70 hours of content. All figures are based on a Swish 900 connection versus a UK average 37.82 Mbps Part Fibre connection with no other bandwidth usage while each scenario is in operation.

JEANIE BIRD, THE FOUNDER OF THE GILDED BIRD

The Gilded Bird is winning over parents and babies alike, so Berkshire founder and mum of three Jeanie Bird explains how it all came together

t sounds simple writing it, but when parents are buying products for their little ones, surely they want something that they actually enjoy looking at? It’s certainly one reason why The Gilded Bird – with its variety of changing mats and now bedding and curtains – has struck such a cord. “I wanted my designs to be for the parent,” states founder Jeanie Bird. “I wanted the design on the changing mat to be a pattern that I would be happy to see in any room of my house. They are bold, beautiful and classic enough to be seen outside and inside the nursery.” The Berkshire-based mother of three launched the business back in September 2018. “I had been so frustrated at the lack of beautiful options for changing mats when I had my twin daughters in 2016,” she explains. “I had spent all this time and money on their nursery and then I had no other option but to put a flimsy changing mat with multi-coloured zoo animals on it, or the ever-popular (and bland!) grey stars that seemed to be on everything. I wanted huge florals, bold colours and hand-painted originality. After all, it was going to be me that had to stare at the mat multiple times per day.”

mam a PROFILE THE BUSINESS IS MOVING INTO DESIGNING FOR THE HOME TOO
Bird’s passion for the project is clear, but was she sure that other parents would feel the same way? “I had a hunch,” she smiles. “I knew that if I found this space in the market to be lacking, I probably wasn’t the only one. It was definitely a risk and, looking back, it did take a leap of faith and a belief in myself to start it. I had an idea of five designs and a talented cousin who happened to be a graphic artist helped bring my concepts to life – and it’s just grown from there. So far, my hunch was right.” Visiting The Gilded Bird’s website will put a smile on your face as you are greeted by bursts of colour and wonderful designs. Various ‘sold out’ splashes on the products show just how popular they are proving to be. “My florals and leaves designs are always strong sellers,” Bird says. “They look so natural, but also add a beautiful punch of colour to an otherwise forgotten about corner of the nursery.” And a recent win at the Junior Design Awards show The Gilded Bird’s appeal is stretching to industry experts too. “This one is particularly special to me as they focus on the look and feel of the product specifically. My new bedding range was a long time in the making because I wanted to get the perfect mix of a stunning look and quality feel. You can really feel the luxury of the organic cotton in the bedding – it’s lush – and the judging panel completely agreed.” The aforementioned bedding and curtains addition to the business begs the question of how Bird fits all this into her day to day life. “It has been a constant juggling act,” she says.
“They are bold and classic enough to be seen outside the nursery”
“Now my children are all in full-time school, I can count on my weekdays being fairly focused on work, but I’m always trying to balance it all. There is also a constant string of late nights working at the computer or in my warehouse as it’s only then when the kids are all tucked into bed and the house is quiet that I can really focus. Owning your own business means that when everyone else is snuggling up for a cuppa and a night of Netflix, I’m still at the computer working. You wear many hats as a business owner, so you have to be willing to put in the work. I work almost every hour of the day – but that also gives me the freedom to be at school drop-off and pick up each day.” And even her Berkshire neighbours are willing to fit into Bird’s way of working. “I live next to a goose farm,” she laughs. “Everyone thinks geese would be horribly noisy neighbours, but they are wonderful. I watch them waddle past my kitchen window each morning – it’s like living in a Beatrix Potter book. It provides endless inspiration for the designs I put on my products.” The next step, Bird says, is more home décor. “I get asked on a regular basis when I’ll be bringing these designs out in bedding or curtains for other non-baby parts of the home,” she says. “I also want my own chain of stores. I have a huge love for the high street, and I think with the right mix of experience and products, people will want to go out and shop again. Online sales will always be there, but I want to create that experience of inspiration and luxury. It’s something to aspire to.” thegildedbird.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

e are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit… Aristotle is credited with saying these 15 famous words and at Holme Grange we put them into practice. When you choose Holme Grange for your child we provide the learning habits that will lead to future excellence. When did you last challenge yourself to be the best version of you? With drive, motivation, and passion you can achieve your goals much easier. At Holme Grange we instil this in our pupils encouraging them to ask questions, seek answers and solve problems for themselves. Our youngest pupils are encouraged to have a go, take risks and learn from mistakes. In our Pre-Prep, pupils do this routinely
through Forest School experiences, by playing sport and music, and by participating in competitions. Never under-estimate the importance of happiness in the quest for excellence; in our experience, happy children are more open to learning. Trusting relationships are formed in a nurturing environment and we enjoy building children’s resilience and developing their confidence. Within Pre-Prep, children are provided with a challenging curriculum that is delivered in a motivating and creative way. Quality teaching by inspirational teachers creates enthusiastic, highly motivated and successful learners. Pupils are rewarded for effort and understand the need to live beyond their comfort zone. It is often in the challenge zone where learning takes place, after all. Our school is recognised for the work we do in supporting the able child through the NACE challenge award.
This is a school where everyone goes the extra mile for each and every pupil, and where wonder and awe are part of the everyday curriculum. The aim of the school is to develop children into allrounders who are confident individuals with a good sense of moral purpose, who recognise their own self-worth and that of others, and who are independent thinkers with a “can-do attitude”. So what does it take to be your best self, to live a life rich in health, growth, and happiness? Answer: as the Holme Grange motto says: “Work Hard – Play Fair”.

CLASS APART
The wait is almost over for hundreds of prospective buyers who have their hearts set on a new Bewley home at Wilton Park in Beaconsfield
W “I know how special this development is and how sought after the new homes will be”
ilton Park will take the form of a traditional village, with a new, classical house at its heart, becoming a community in an English country estate setting. Bewley Homes will be building one and two bedroom apartments and two, three and four bedroom homes all designed and built in a classical style. In addition to the much-needed additional homes to the area, the development is expected to deliver significant investment into local infrastructure, community and education facilities including a community hub, café, two hectares of parkland and a new purpose-built facility for First Place Nursery. Elaine Stratford, sales and marketing director at Bewley Homes, says: “Having worked in Beaconsfield for many years and living in the local area, I know how special this development is and how sought after the new homes will be. We are truly excited to be developing the initial phases here with home styles ranging from two bedrooms to five bedrooms. This is a project which the Bewley team is proud and pleased to bring to the market.
“We are very excited with the prospect of opening our show home on the first phase at Wilton Park to the prospective buyers early in the new year,” she adds. “I know just how much expectation there is here.” Wilton Park is a landmark development for Bewley Homes and one which demonstrates the company’s commitments to collaboration. The site, which is at the entrance to Beaconsfield Old Town, is bordered by outstanding open countryside. Residents will also benefit from Beaconsfield’s excellent transport links, with trains to London Marylebone in as little as 23 minutes and easy access to junction 2 of the M40 motorway. BEWLEY HOMES
