Author Rachael Blok on missing out in St Albans last year in more ways than one – and why the local area is making up for it this month

Thriving St Albans

How the area is bouncing back

A

utumn is one of my favourite seasons and this year with fireworks celebrations open again, I can’t wait to visit some of my favourite displays. The lake in St Albans is always a stunning sight – so lovely to see the Cathedral in the background lit up and enjoy the community feel the evening always holds. When everything was closed last autumn, I was busy finalising the edits for my novel Into The Fire, which is set in St Albans over a Halloween weekend. It’s based in a huge country house, which I’ve set adjacent to the Roman Theatre; such evocative surroundings for a murder mystery novel and Halloween is a great backdrop for concealing secrets! The hardback came out in April and, as well as missing out on firework displays during lockdown, I also missed seeing my book in bookshops on publication day. It was the first time I’ve held a launch party in my back garden, with a limit of six people. The paperback is out this November, so I plan on celebrating and visiting lots of local bookshops to see it on the shelves. Books on the Hill in St Albans very kindly ran an online launch last time, and I’m sure I’m not alone in saying how great it is to see all local businesses be able to open their doors to customers again. There’s nothing quite like watching the seasons change, and I developed a real appreciation for the Hertfordshire countryside during our lockdown walks, which we’ve made sure we carry on taking. We’re so lucky Hertfordshire has such beauty on its doorstep, all year round.

stablished in 2017, Arkley Fine Art has quickly made its mark as a leading gallery, discovering emerging artists on the contemporary fine art scene. It is a warm and welcoming space, one that encourages people to immerse themselves in a great selection of art. Set up by Richard and Danielle Barry in Hertfordshire, both have worked within the art industry for the last decade, selling works by some of the world’s most notable names to an international client base. The setup at Arkley has been built on their strong values of not only making

“THE TEAM AT ARKLEY WANT TO KNOW A PIECE OF WORK WILL LOOK AS STUNNING IN YOUR HOME AS IT DOES IN THE GALLERY”

sure they are showcasing the best that contemporary art has to offer, but also making sure the careers of the artists on their portfolio are being properly managed. Their success is Arkley’s success. This combination allows them to not only showcase an incredible eclectic display of work, from multi award-winning artists, but also helps to protect the investment opportunities of each and every client. Over the last four years Arkley Fine Art have seen some of their artists increase in value by as much as 350%.

HOME APPROVAL SERVICE

SCULPTURE BY KATHY PREST

Buying a piece of artwork is something very special, and often quite personal – this is why at Arkley Fine Art, they want you to know that you have made the right decision with each piece purchased. When they opened their doors, they knew they wanted to provide a service that went above and beyond to ensure this for all of their clients. This is where the idea of their complimentary home approval service was born. Where possible, one of their consultants will personally bring the artworks to your home or business to allow you to view in situ. Alternatively, they have an experienced, in-house photography

team, who can super-impose an image onto your wall from a photograph. This allows you to see how well a piece works with your interior. A piece of artwork can look very different in Arkley Fine Art’s gallery compared to your own space at home. Every piece that is purchased, the team at Arkley want to know that the client is 100% happy and knows it will fit perfectly and look as stunning as it does in the gallery as it does in their home. This service has taken them into the most beautiful houses, allowing them to not only see some incredible spaces, but also it allows them to get to know their clients on a personal level. No matter the spend or the individual, the key value to their business is to provide outstanding service to each person they have the pleasure of meeting – whether you are a seasoned or aspiring collector. It is a service Arkley prides themselves on, knowing that no other gallery offers anything like this. Hitchin actor Michael Xavier reflects on ten years of his performing arts school and why we can expect to see a very special show this month By MARK KEBBLE

C

onsidering he has been nominated for an Olivier Award twice, and won a Broadway World Award, it’s perhaps not a surprise that when I ask Michael Xavier about his views on how theatre has been treated since the start of the pandemic, his hackles rise. “There are no words that can do justice to just how floored we’ve all been in the theatre world,” he laments. “It’s what we live and breathe, so to lose it for so long and see it struggle to get back on its feet is heart-breaking. I’m thrilled that it’s now over and we’re beginning to mend, but smaller theatres still need more financial support from the government.” It’s not only during a pandemic that those running this country have given theatre short shrift, something that Xavier was determined to rectify when, ten years ago, he helped launch his own performing arts school. “I made it my aim, along

with my wonderful team including Debra Morgan and Daisy Greenwood, to give the younger generation somewhere they could feel supported through their creativity, especially as the government were telling the country that theatre wasn’t a viable career. What kind of message was this for young aspiring performers to hear?” His anger at the decision makers soon gives way to enthusiasm for MX Masterclass, which the performing arts school is known as today. “I originally set up West End Masterclass [as it was known at first] with my ex-partner as initially we realised we had a lot to offer,” Xavier recounts. “Over time it’s become not only a passion project, but I’ve made it part of my mission to help young performers to not only get better at the three disciplines of musical theatre – singing, acting and dancing – but to grow into confident, kind, compassionate humans who are team players. After all, being part of a theatrical production is about being part of a team.” The school has had plenty of success

stories, including recent Absolutely Hertfordshire cover star Asha Banks, but for Xavier, when was his immense talent for the stage first discovered? “I was a very sporty child,” he starts the story not as I expected. “One winter I had a bad case of bronchitis and couldn’t play football – I couldn’t run a few yards without being completely out of breath, so I had to give it up until my lungs repaired. During that time, my school were auditioning for roles in their production of Grease and my friend Wil Mainwaring knew I could sing, so convinced me to audition. I did extensive breathing exercises daily to strengthen my lungs and subsequently auditioned for the show and got two roles, Teen Angel and Vince Fontain. From the first day of rehearsals I was hooked.” Some 20 years later and his stage CV is hugely impressive. Xavier revels in the thrill of performing to a packed live audience – “No, nothing, nada,” he says on if anything compares to that – and he has had plenty of memorable experiences of A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

HE LOVES BEING ON STAGE

SOMETHING HE MISSES WHEN AWAY

“Choose the roles or projects, not the money. That's why I am not rich” doing just that. “My favourite experience has to be working opposite Glenn Close in Sunset Boulevard in the West End and then on Broadway,” he says on his personal highlight, one that led to the aforementioned Broadway World Award. “That changed my life. My favourite creative acting experience was bringing to life the character of Oliver in Love Story [which saw one of those Olivier Award noms]. The show is beautiful and needs to be seen to be believed.” You will be able to do just that when a special 11th anniversary concert takes place at Cadogan Hall for one night only in November. This entire interview could be dedicated to Xavier’s work on stage, but his screen credits deserve attention too. “I love the challenge of screen acting,” he says on switching between the two mediums. It also kept him busy during lockdown, with filming projects including Grace, Chelsea Detective, Gentleman Jack and Grantchester, the latter of which he’s just finished filming and why we find him back at home in Hitchin. Does it feel like things are returning to normal in the acting world? “Not really,” he shakes his head. “For TV and film work it’s been flowing – or rather staggering – along for the past several months,

which is great, but there are still very stringent rules and restrictions in place, like mask wearing on set and constant Covid tests. This is all absolutely necessary and I agree with them wholeheartedly, but it’s certainly not ‘normal’ on set. “It’s great that most theatres have reopened in London now,” he continues, “and it seems they’re getting closer to normal business resuming, but there is always the threat of a cast or crew member catching the virus, which can cripple a production. The theatre industry has been absolutely devastated by this pandemic. It’s going to take a lot of tentative steps to ensure it keeps moving forward whilst keeping theatre companies and audiences as safe as possible.” The stage, in particular, is one thing he hopes to be stepping on once again in 2022. “I really do miss theatre,” he says, “so I’m hoping to do something on stage next year. I’m just finishing my contract with Grantchester, so I’m now able to start auditioning for other projects. I have an agent in America as well, so I’m hoping for a short gig in the States to mix things up a bit. But I always say choose the roles/projects, not the money. That’s probably why I’m not rich!” Michael Xavier will be starring in Love Story for one night only on 28 November at Cadogan Hall. See more at cadoganhall.com

Hitchin havens M I C H A E L X AV I E R’ S T O P LO C A L P I C K S How long have you lived in Hitchin? Nearly three years now, although I’ve known Hitchin for many years. I nearly bought a flat here in 2005, but I couldn’t quite afford it. I wish I had. It’d be worth a fair amount now! What do you miss most about home when travelling for work? Obviously my fiancée Carly and my dog, Winnie. In terms of the place itself I miss the peace and quiet. When I worked in New York I realised I didn’t want to live in a noisy city, so we bought this place when I returned to the UK. I also missed a good cup of tea! Could you name your three favourite local spots? First up, Hitchin Lavender fields. It’s a beautiful setting, with great facilities and the nicest owners. Then Groundworks café - I’m a regular (free coffee next time for the plug, please team). Lastly, Oughtonhead Common, which is great for walking the dog and escaping the hustle and bustle of the town centre.

Q For those who need a refresher, what’s the background story to Elliott of London? A Elliott of London is a thriving haven of hand forged metal artwork. Each piece is initially designed and handmade by myself and my small, devoted team in our sculpture studio on the borders of Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. Q Since we last spoke in the summer, how have things been going? A It has been very busy here at Elliott of London. We have been creating new sculptures, getting commission sculptures ready for installation, updating stock at the outlets we showcase at – and we’ve even been out at a few exhibitions.

Q What’s new from Elliott of London this autumn? A We have some new sculpture designs ready for the autumn including our Beech Seed Sculpture, which is finished in a rustic patina. We have also been busy with our bronze sculptures, so there’s a few really exciting ones currently off being cast at the foundry. But our most exciting creation is our 4m high Horse Head – we can not wait to see the end result of this monster piece. Q What can you tell us about the unique features of the bronze sculptures? A Bronze sculptures are timeless, but I think that the methods have changed and evolved over the years. In recent times the patination has modernised bringing in more contemporary colours. Our Kingfisher Bronze, for example, has a lot of coloured patination, whereas our Bronze Show Jumping Horse has a very vintage style of bronze sculpture, with a smooth finish and dark rich coloured patination – the two couldn’t be any more different! The methods of the texture in the bronze world has also grown with so many different ways to finish the sculptures.

Q As we head into the festive season, do you get a lot of enquiries/commissions about creating work as a Christmas gift? A We get a few more enquiries coming into the festive period for our interior sculptures and gifts. We have a huge amount of interior art pieces that are affordable and all of them can be adapted to suit each customer’s needs. We welcome these commissions as there’s no better feeling than creating something that’s going to be gifted to someone to keep forever. Q What would you say has been the

most unique commission to have come your way in the past? A We’ve been involved in some very heartfelt commissions, which have seriously touched us and that we’ve been honoured to work on. I think one of my favourite commissions was a flock of Blackface Sheep we created for a family fairly local to us. They were great fun and we really enjoyed working on a different method to show the sheep’s wool fleeces. Since we made them, the owner has added to the flock and they now have a few lamb sculptures and a sheep dog sculpture they’ve named Colin! Q How long have you had your studio

and gallery in Berkhamsted, and what’s great about the space you have? A We have been here for almost six years. It’s a great space with plenty

of room for us to create our larger sculptures. We are lucky enough to be able to welcome people up to see our sculptures and see how we create them. Q What do you love about the Berkhamsted area? A The area is just beautiful, being so close to Ashridge and the Chiltern Hills allows us all to enjoy the wildlife. It’s a lovely town with everything you need in one place. Q When you do get time away from the studio, do you have favourite places in the area to head to? A We have Labradors so dog walks are generally what I head off to do in my spare time. We are lucky to have Albury on the doorstep – we tend to take the dogs for a good walk around there then head to The Greyhound Pub for some good food. We also spend a lot of time at Atkin Grant & Lang Shooting Ground, shooting the competitions and practicing. They cater for all abilities and have brilliant facilities. Our new favourite place is Hanako in Berkhamsted, a florist with a twist – you pick what flowers you’d like in your bouquet and while you wait you can enjoy afternoon tea and a glass or two of fizz. Q What can you tell us about your

ambitions for a sculpture park in the area? A Our plan is to invite other sculptors

to exhibit their artwork and offer a lovely day out for everyone. We will have our studio there with open days for demonstrations and workshops. We hope to have a café on site and would eventually love to have a glamping site too. We are still seeking the location and we’ve put the word out, but we are still looking – so if anyone knows of anything we'd really welcome the information.

Just 20 miles from London, its spectacular high-street, charming independent shops and eateries, legendary Charter markets, historic buildings and beautiful outside spaces make the city particularly strong in the staycation market. “Post pandemic, we are delighted to see that footfall figures have bounced back,” manager of St Albans BID, Denise Parsons, says. “We’re seeing higher than the national average footfall and we anticipate this trend to continue. Building a better future for all commerce in St Albans is our priority – and this includes supporting all of our local businesses and working alongside our partners and communities in order to maximise opportunities.” Commercial interest in the city is very strong with big brands opening new retail outlets including burger eatery, Five Guys, and sports clothing chain, Sports

Despite the pandemic, Oliver Zissman, owner of Leafy salad bar in Christopher Place, decided to open in March 2021 and hasn’t looked back. “St Albans is the first location for Leafy, with number two planned in Harpenden or Hitchen in 2022, and our opening months have been absolutely incredible,” he smiles. “We have exceeded our forecasts for the first six months and the feedback from customers has been totally overwhelming. I think St Albans’ success, first and foremost, is its big sense of community and local support for independent business. We are seeing new store openings every week, with hospitality being at the forefront. The city is definitely thriving.”

THE LOVE BROWNIES TEAM

TERZETTO WILL SOON BE OPENING ON CHEQUER STREET

Bogdan Mamrosh is the owner of awardwinning franchise, Love Brownies, and he tells us that he chose St Albans as his top location due to its popularity with tourists as well as its busy town centre. “St Albans has a fantastic vibe,” he says. “I think its community, history and special events make an incredibly solid package for any business who is trying to build a successful offering at this difficult time. Market days are great and especially the big street events, not just because they bring more trade, but because it brings people together and gives us all a sense of normality and positivity.” Terzetto Stone, a family-run business selling high-quality natural stone and porcelain wall and floor tiles, will soon be opening their fourth UK showroom in Chequer Street. Owner, Tim Cook, says: “We opened our first showroom in Yorkshire in 2004 and have grown organically since then and we’re delighted to be opening our fourth showroom in St Albans in the coming weeks. We chose St Albans because of its vibrant city centre with a great mix of shops, all easily accessible for our customers. Everyone has been very welcoming and we are looking forward to being part of the community and helping to support the city to continue to be a great place for people to shop.” Megan’s, with restaurant outlets across South West London, Surrey and Islington, is also new to the city and chose St Albans as their only market village location. “We offer a homely environment in leafy neighbourhoods where we aim to become part of the heart of the community, so St Albans is perfectly in-line with our ethos and roots,” head of marketing, Amy Harris,

explains. “It’s been both an exciting and stressful time, due to team shortages, but we’re in a good place now and we’re delighted to embed ourselves in our new environment. St Albans certainly feels like the most homely of our restaurants.” “A fabulous shopping destination, St Albans is home to an array of innovative independent retailers and well-known chains and the fact that more big brands like Sports Direct and Five Guys have chosen to open stores in the area shows real confidence in the city of St Albans,” Denise Parsons adds. “Our big cultural events like the Food & Drink Festival were a huge success, with more than 15,000 people flocking to the highlight, FEASTIVAL, believed to be the highest ever – we view our outdoor events as being crucial to the cultural and economic success of the city, driving footfall and spend. “St Albans is also famous for its colourful history and heritage as well as its café and pub culture with a fantastic range of award-wining eating and drinking establishments – all of this makes St Albans a more attractive place to live, visit, invest and work, which will only continue to build on the economic success of the city.” And, to conclude, she had one last heartfelt thing to say about the area. “It’s really the community at the heart of St Albans’ success. People have worked hard to navigate the challenges of the pandemic and they have chosen to support our businesses throughout. It’s thanks to their ongoing support and investment that St Albans is once again booming.” Visit EnjoyStAlbans.com to find out more

THE WORK OF SOPWELL COMMUNITY TRUST STOOD OUT

LIZ MARCY COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, PARTNERSHIPS AND MARKETING OFFICER St Albans City and District Council Q How long have the St Albans Food &

Drink Festival Awards been running for?

A This most recent Food and Drink Festival

was the 14th St Albans City and District Council has delivered. It’s an event that has grown and changed over the years. Q How did you decide on revamping

the Festival Awards this year?

A The whole of the Food and Drink Festival

is overseen by a steering committee comprised of industry insiders, representing various parts of the food and hospitality sector from pubs to market stalls to cafes to producers to high-end restaurants. The steering committee felt strongly that it would just be odd, given the year we’ve had, to try and do a ‘business as usual’ awards, with the usual awards for best café, best family-friendly restaurant, and so on. So many places weren’t able to open at all, and people were using venues in really unusual ways, that it just didn’t seem right! So the decision was taken that, as the Kate d’Arcy award for customer service is considered the ‘pinnacle’ award – the one that everybody secretly or not-so-secretly wants to win! – we’d change the way the award was made for this year only. Instead of being an award for customer service in the context of a food business, we’d use it to reward the person who’d done the greatest service to the community.

AND THE

Q Who was Kate d’Arcy? A Kate d’Arcy was a much-loved local

restaurateur who died in 2010. The award was set up in celebration and to commemorate this wonderful Aussie woman who did so much to further the restaurant sector in the city.

CAZ KAUR THE PORTLAND ARMS Q Can you give us a brief

overview of your work in the hospitality industry to date? A I have almost 20 years’ experience as a publican and still have a great passion for my job. Q How did it feel to win the Kate d’Arcy award for customer service? A I was very proud and honoured to receive what was, for me, an unexpected award. I am very humbled by all the support we have received. Q What initiatives did you launch during lockdown? A The initiative for me was to provide a place that people could meet safely

and still have the opportunity to visit the local pub, as far as the restrictions would allowed. Like most I looked at my business in a different way because of Covid. I invested heavily in the outside garden area with the 11 pods that seat four to six people, so customers could still visit. Q It’s hard to know what the future may hold, but with society opening up again, what are you now looking to offer the public? A The pub is open and ready to serve customers with an outdoor space in The Portland pods. We will be offering theme nights, live music, Christmas parties and, of course, just being a local pub to everyone. portlandarmsstalbans.co.uk

RAIHAANAH AHMED SOPWELL COMMUNITY TRUST Q How did it feel to win the Kate

d’Arcy award for customer service?

A Overwhelming. The award is recognition

of the 50 people strong team’s dedication and commitment since March 2020 to providing food aid in a dignified manner and hard work in rescuing food from landfill. Q What initiatives did you

launch during lockdown?

A From January 2021 I have organised

teams to collect food destined for landfill from local supermarkets, twice daily every day of the week. Then a delivery scheme, where fresh fruit, vegetables and culturally competent ingredients are packed into boxes and delivered daily to those who have restricted mobility for various reasons. Our baked treats and notes for the isolated elderly started with my sons and I baking cakes for our elderly neighbours who were unable to see their out of town family members. My sons drew pictures and wrote notes, which we added to the cake boxes. After a social media call for help we had over 70 volunteers baking and writing notes for 300 elderly residents across St Albans. We also cooked meals for NHS staff. Both my brothers are NHS doctors and at the start of the pandemic were working incredibly long hours under the most stressful circumstances, so when I saw the call for help from You Donate We Deliver I signed up to cook meals for NHS staff.

wonderful to be recognised. I said on the day that a massive portion of the thanks needs to go to my chef, Kevin, who did it with me and all the local people who donated and helped distribute food. Q It’s hard to know what the

overview of your work in the hospitality industry to date? A I’ve been in the trade all my life. I grew up in my grandparents’ pub and worked in bars in my younger years. I spent four years working with Majestic Wines and 13 years with Charlie Wells brewery. I became landlord of the Rose and Crown pub in Sandridge eight and a half years ago and then took over the wonderful, historic Hare and Hounds in the heart of St Albans two years ago. It’s in my blood and it’s an industry I’m hugely passionate about. Q How did it feel to win the Kate

d’Arcy award for customer service?

future may hold, but with society opening up again, what are you now looking to offer the public? A To continue to offer people a lovely local pub experience with excellent food. The big challenge for us now is staff. The staff welcome is so important to the pub experience and the hospitality industry is a great industry to join, irrespective of age – when you join us you are part of the family. If I could say one thing to the local community it’s this: now more than ever, this is the time to visit your local, independent pub. It’s a critical time and often, once your local independent pub closes, it’s gone. Please use it, enjoy it and help save it. SaveStAlbansPubs.co.uk

Sesamecrusted feta and sun blush tomatoes on rosemary skewers Serves 8

‘Everything is betta with feta,’ says Tara, voted the number one feta fan of all time, and, to be fair, she might be right. We try really hard not to show cheese favouritism (cheesism), but we’d be lying if we didn’t admit that feta makes a prominent appearance in the OTK fridge, its salty, tangy properties lending it well to multiple preparations. This dish is a little bit sweet, a lotta bit salty, a tiny bit bitter and a whole bit crispy. It’s exactly what you’d serve for brunch (with bacon, if you like) and not much else, as it really is quite rich.

INGREDIENTS •2 blocks of Greek feta (360g), each cut into 4 triangles (8 triangles in total) •3 5g rice flour (or plain flour if gluten-free flour not needed) • 1 large egg, well beaten • 1 00g mixed black and white sesame seeds, lightly toasted •2 tbsp olive oil •0 .5 tbsp picked lemon thyme leaves, or regular thyme leaves Syrup • 1 20g runny honey • 1 tsp ground black lime (optional) •3 lemons: 1 juiced to get 1 tbsp and the other 2 left whole

METHOD 1 Line a shallow baking dish (or baking tray with a slight lip), about 30cm x 20cm in size, with baking parchment. 2 Pat dry the feta pieces, then dip each piece in the flour, gently shaking off the excess. Coat in the egg, followed by the sesame seeds, making sure the feta pieces are completely coated. Transfer each piece to your prepared dish and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or longer if time allows. 3 Preheat the oven to 220C fan. Drizzle the coated feta pieces with the oil and bake from cold, for 18 minutes, very gently flipping the pieces over halfway, or until golden and warmed through. 4 While the feta is baking, put the honey and black lime, if using, into a small saucepan on a medium-high heat. Once it starts to bubble, turn the heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally, until it turns a deep

amber caramel, about 6–7 minutes. Take off the heat and stir in the lemon juice. Set aside to cool for 5 minutes. 5 Use a small, sharp knife to peel and segment the remaining two lemons and stir the segments into the cooled honey mixture. 6 When ready, pour the lemon syrup directly over the feta in the baking dish, sprinkle with the thyme and serve at once, straight from the dish.

Grilled courgettes with warm yoghurt and saffron butter Serves 2–4

This recipe is inspired by kousa b’laban, a Levantine dish of stuffed baby marrow cooked in yoghurt. In this simplified version the yoghurt sauce and grilled courgettes are cooked separately, then served with a quick saffron butter to spoon on top. There’s a bit of an art to cooking yoghurt without having it curdle; stabilisers such as cornflour and egg yolk tend to do the trick, as does cooking the yoghurt on a moderate heat, stirring continuously and gently warming through without boiling. The result: a silky-smooth and tangy sauce, great for these courgettes but also with other grilled veggies, fatty meats or even as a sauce to pasta.

INGREDIENTS •3 0g unsalted butter •0 .25 tsp saffron threads, roughly crushed •4 small, pale green or regular

courgettes, tops trimmed slightly and courgettes halved lengthways (600g) • 2.5 tbsp olive oil • 1 tsp cornflour • 300g Greek-style yoghurt • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 0.5 tsp dried mint • 0.75 tsp coriander seeds, toasted and roughly crushed with a pestle and mortar • 1.5 tbsp picked mint leaves • Half a lemon • salt and black pepper

METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to a high grill setting. 2 Put the butter and saffron into a small saucepan on a medium heat. When the butter has melted, set aside to infuse. 3 Place the courgettes on a parchment-lined baking tray and toss with 2 tablespoons of oil, 0.3 teaspoon of salt and a good grind of pepper. Arrange them cut side up and grill for 15–20 minutes, until nicely charred and softened. 4 Towards the last 10 minutes of grilling time, make the sauce. In a large bowl, whisk together the cornflour and 3 tablespoons of water until smooth, then add the yoghurt, garlic, dried mint, the remaining 0.5 tablespoon of oil and 0.5 teaspoon of salt. Whisk to combine, then transfer to a large, non-stick saute pan on a medium heat. Cook, stirring continuously, for about 10 minutes, or until thickened slightly and warmed through. Do not let the sauce boil, or it will split. 5 Transfer the warm yoghurt sauce to a plate with a lip and top with the courgettes, grilled side up. Spoon over the saffron butter, then sprinkle with the coriander seeds and mint leaves. Squeeze over the lemon half and serve right away.

• 11 garlic cloves, peeled, 10 left whole and 1 crushed • 30g fresh ginger, peeled and julienned • 400g datterini or regular cherry tomatoes • 3 red chillies, mild or spicy, a slit cut down their length • 1 tbsp tomato paste • 2 tsp cumin seeds, roughly crushed with a pestle and mortar • 2 tsp coriander seeds, roughly crushed with a pestle and mortar • 0.5 tsp ground turmeric • 0.5 tsp chilli flakes • 2 tsp red Kashmiri chilli powder • 1 tsp caster sugar • 200ml olive oil • 180g Greek-style yoghurt • 15g picked mint leaves • 30g fresh coriander, roughly chopped • 2–3 limes: juiced to get 1 tbsp and the rest cut into wedges To serve • salt

METHOD Preheat the oven to 150ÅãC fan. Put the chickpeas, whole garlic cloves, ginger, tomatoes, chillies, tomato paste, spices, sugar, oil and 1 teaspoon of salt into a large saut. pan, for which you have a lid, and mix everything together to combine. Cover with the lid, transfer to the oven and cook for 75 minutes, stirring halfway through, until the aromatics have softened and the tomatoes have nicely broken down. 3 Meanwhile, put the yoghurt, mint, fresh coriander, lime juice, crushed garlic and . teaspoon of salt into a food processor and blitz until smooth and the herbs are finely chopped. 4 Serve the chickpeas directly from the pan, with the yoghurt and lime wedges alongside. 1

Confit tandoori chickpeas Serves 4

These chickpeas have had their fair share of Insta fame for a multitude of reasons. The first being that the simplicity of the dish makes it really

quite attractive: throw everything into a pan and pop it into the oven, leaving it to its own devices (and you to yours). The second being that slow-cooking the chickpeas in oil without added liquid makes them super soft, allowing all the aromatics to break down into the oil. Lastly, this dish can easily be made ahead and served later; it only improves with time. Swap out Greek yoghurt with a non-dairy alternative for a completely vegan meal, and serve with rice.

“OUR BEER NAMES ARE INFLUENCED BY LOCAL LITERATURE, FOLKLORE AND EVEN WILDLIFE”

S DOWN THE

LO C A L Absolutely Hertfordshire looks back at 30 years of success for Tring Brewery Co, from quirky beer names to having the area close to its heart

ide Pocket for a Toad, Moongazing, Colley’s Dog, Tea Kettle Stout, Fanny Ebbs Summer Ale, Santa’s Little Helper… It feels like a whole host of random words thrown together, but in fact these are all beer names created by Tring Brewery Co, and plenty of thought has gone into them all. “Our beer names are influenced by local literature, folklore, events, persons of note, places and even wildlife,” says co-director Andrew Jackson. “It’s just one of the things we do to create another connection with the region.” You can’t get more Tring than the Tring Brewery Co. Since the company launched in 1992, founded by Richard Shardlow, it has gone to great lengths to involve the community around it. “With such a rich heritage of brewing in Tring, we wanted to build a brand that was intrinsically linked to the area, using ingredients and stories from the locale to develop a range of delicious beers,” says Jackson, who joined the business in 2000. Since the off, Tring Brewery Co has stood out. “We have always been committed to the production of traditional cask ale,” Jackson explains. “Regarded as a national treasure, this unique way in which British beers undergo secondary fermentation in cask, served live and fresh, is something we are incredibly proud to produce.” A traditional approach, but that doesn’t mean the company hasn’t evolved over nigh on 30 years. “Beer has really blossomed in the last ten years, with a focus on the exploration of both flavour and experience,” Jackson says. “Our core range has steadily grown to sit at 11 cask ales, two craft kegs and now, excitingly, a lager as well. Today, our stalwarts like Ridgeway bitter and Side Pocket for a Toad golden ale are flanked by hazy IPAs ladened with tropical American hops, crisp international lagers and robust stouts that have been brewed with locally roasted coffee.”

TRING IS A BEAUTIFUL SETTING

THE BREWERY SHOP

“THE BEAUTIFUL THING ABOUT BREWING BEER IS THAT YOU CAN CREATE AN INFINITE PORTFOLIO OF STYLES” THE TEAM IS STAFFED BY TRING LOCALS

From this range, is there something we can always expect when taking a sip of a Tring Brewery Co product? “In a word, quality,” Jackson states. “Beer can be the focus of an experience, with intense flavours and aromas, but it can also be a secondary factor, providing the social glue to treasured interactions with our nearest and dearest, commanding well-made session ales to sup on throughout. Both of these require quality brewing. Though we have seen a shift in drinkers’ interest to more explorative and experiential products, we value balance and technical excellence over all else. Whatever the style, expect great flavour and drinkability.” The aforementioned Side Pocket for a Toad is their flagship brand and, as Jackson says, “shows no sign of slowing down”, with new launches Raven King IPA and Alchemist lager gaining momentum. It begs the question of how the team create a new beer. “As both a passion and a profession, we like our palettes to inspire us when we are creating new beers,” Jackson answers. “This could come from progressive styles we have found on our travels or even a heritage style we recall fondly from memory. The beautiful thing about brewing beer is that, with so many variations of hops and grains and yeast, you can create an infinite portfolio of styles. It really is as fun as it sounds.” For many years, too, locals have been able to browse their creations in the brewery

shop at Dunsley Farm, which recently celebrated a decade of service. “The main event of the shop are draught beer refills, allowing thirsty drinkers to fill up with fresh draught ale to take away,” Jackson smiles. “Our broad range allows us to host exciting beer and food pairings, contrasting and comparing different styles of ale with the produce of local chocolatiers, charcuterie makers and cheesemongers. At the shop, we sell chocolate from Yvette’s Chocolates of Potten End, gin from Puddingstone Distillery of Tring, Chiltern Charcuterie from Berkhamsted, Chiltern Artisan Biltong from Wendover and so much more.” Tring Brewery Co is a rare beast: a company that produces much-talked about beers, but one that also doesn’t forget its roots. “As a regional producer our engagement with the local community is paramount,” Jackson says. “Beyond brand awareness, we believe that as an established local brewer we have a responsibility to help home counties charities and nonprofit organisations. We believe our beer is even more tasty when it has been made in support of those around us.” And we are delighted to raise a pint to that. which is integrated within our support. We provide specialist groups in the same format too, such as disordered eating, drug and relationship groups, where we focus on that particular addiction for additional support. Q As a charity fighting addiction, what is your approach to breaking the cycle? A We aim for people to take back responsibility for their own lives and break the cycle of addiction. The cyclical spiral downwards of their own addiction of ‘resolution, relapse, remorse’, but also that of future generations. We provide the exit route. A child is four times more likely to develop an addiction if one or more of their parents have an addiction. That generational legacy is only broken when a person is able to achieve sustained and long-term abstinence from any harmful behaviour. Q Tell us a little bit about yourself and the background to The Living Room… A In the late 90s Janis Feely MBE worked as an addiction worker at a residential rehab project. It was during this time that Janis had a vision for a unique new daytime recovery treatment centre. In May 2000, after a year of fundraising and lobbying, Janis achieved her vision and established The Living Room, supporting many people to achieve recovery from their addictions. My background is in working with children and families to achieve their potential, followed by supporting the long term unemployed into work. One of the major barriers to children achieving, cohesive families and stable employment was addiction. Having a family member who had lived with addiction and achieved long-term recovery through The Living Room, I took up the baton as CEO after Janis retired.

“The most difficult step is to reach out for help” Q What are the aims of the charity? A We have a unique model that’s been

upheld over 21 years, providing daytime group therapy, for free, without a time limit for the adult needing support, and we support their family members as they are living with the consequences of addiction. We support all addictions, as it is not about the substances or behaviours. We provide a space for people to reflect and talk about the root cause of their obsession, and then help them with effective tools to use instead of self-destruction. We are open Monday to Friday and sessions are 10.30am-midday and 1pm–2.30pm every day in Stevenage, St Albans and Watford. We also have a virtual service called Herts Hub, which provides group therapy via video for four days a week. Q What are the services that the charity offers? A Daytime group therapy, facilitated by trained addiction counsellors, using the 12-step approach. People attend full time; it is a job to get well. We offer group sessions, always with two counsellors leading the discussions in the morning and workshops in the afternoon. We work in partnership with RELATE and Family Lives, both Hertfordshire charities to address relationship and parenting issues,

Q What impact did you see COVID having on the rise of addiction? A What we did see was many more men reaching out for help as our male/female ratios have always been female dominant, however this is now male dominant for the first time. Before the pandemic, an average of 25% attended our service with a diagnosed mental health issue. This is now 65%, therefore dual diagnosis of an addiction and mental health issue adds another dimension to how we work with people and the time they need. Q On your website, you have an events section. How do you use them to raise awareness? A We see events as a great social addition to our therapy by encouraging people accessing our service and their families to be involved, raising money to keep the service going for others that may need us in the future, but also to create a positive network that gives back to the community. Q Lastly, what advice would you give to someone wanting to seek help and advice? A Addiction ruins your life: do you want to take back control and really live? The most difficult step is to reach out for help and step through the door or virtual door. Call us and speak with Sheena or Mia, they will be able to talk you through it all. Be reassured, our counsellors have walked the same path you have and know exactly what you are experiencing. People you meet will have similar experiences and will not judge you, but they will understand your pain and struggle.

S E E I N G C L E A R L Y N O W One Herts local writes about her experience of watching her grandson seeing colour for the first time By JILL HAILEY

“IT'S AMAZING HOW MUCH CAN CHANGE JUST BY BEING ABLE TO SEE MORE COLOURS”

JILL HAILEY'S GRANDSON MICHAEL

C

an you imagine what it would be like to be colour blind? To view a world which is just dull with less colour detail? My grandson Michael is colour blind. He doesn’t wonder at rainbows, or the beauty of red roses. Well, he didn’t until one Saturday a few weeks ago when he was handed the gift of colour. For the first time in his 21 years, he can view life in technicolour. And thereby hangs a tale. Michael’s mother – my daughter Jo Hailey – is a professional photographer and her company, Striking Places, was commissioned by Jez Levy to help promote his new business, when he opened EYES on St Albans in Marshalswick. She created a 3D virtual tour of Jez’s amazing shop to enhance the presence of EYES on St Albans on Google Maps. Working with a qualified optician prompted Jo to ask Jez if he knew of anything that could help Michael, which in turn reminded Jez that he had been attempting to talk to EnChroma in America – a company that has developed the technology to help overcome colour blindness. He immediately phoned EnChroma and followed up with an email, with links to the virtual tour created by Jo, explaining that he knew of someone who needed help. EnChroma responded almost immediately. A retail agreement was entered into and sample lens despatched. So, on that momentous Saturday, we all presented ourselves at the Marshalswick shop. Michael took a test to determine which kind of colour blindness he has and donned the special glasses. His reaction was amazing as he experienced full

colours for the very first time – in fact I don’t think he stopped grinning all day. And it was a first for Jez as well. He says: “I was delighted to be able to help someone with colour blindness, especially in Michael’s case, a young person from St Albans who is studying Film Production at University.” Michael was the first local person to benefit from the EnChroma technology, which had never before been on the UK market. The test that Michael took is available on the EYES on St Albans app, which can be downloaded through Google Play or the Apple app store. Thanking Jez, Michael says: “It’s amazing how much can change just by being able to see more colours. Everything jumps out at me and puts me in a fantastic mood.” E Y E S O N ST A L B A N S Find out how EYES on St Albans can help you by calling 01727 838003 or visiting eyesonstalbans.com

MIND & BODY

he foggy brain, lack of sleep, irritability, lack of sex drive, anxiety, hot sweats are just some of the things that every woman over the age of 40 are likely to experience. Menopause is not something that your mother just went through! It’s something that all women will experience and yet there seems to be a reluctance to acknowledge it, a taboo discussing it, and a lack of understanding of how to alleviate it. Two doctors who had specialized in fertility, which today is well catered for, and who had started experiencing some perimenopause symptoms themselves, were aware that already stretched GPs didn’t have the resources nor were given the training on how best to treat it. So, realising this gap in the medical industry, they decided to set up the Oxford Hormone Clinic to help women understand what they may be going through and look to provide a range of bespoke treatments from prescribing HRT, to acupuncture and advice on nutrition and lifestyle. Recognising that women have a hectic work and home life they decided to offer face to face consultations in Banbury Road, Oxford, and online via Zoom, to make sure every women anywhere had the opportunity to meet with them. So if at any time you think things may not be 100%, check out their free symptom test which you can find on their home page at oxfordhormoneclinic. com. A visit will also offer you more information and helpful advice as and when you need it.

Applying COMMON SENSE The founder of Cienté Hair & Health Spa discusses the impact of COVID-19 on chemical hairdressing services By TRISHA BULLER

W

hen COVID-19 impacted on our lives in 2020, who would have expected it to have such adverse reactions on our hair and scalp health. There is now a real concern, as more and more salons across the UK are reporting issues of scalp reactions to chemical services, including hair colouring and some treatments that are important for hair health. Hair is a complex chain of amino acids and grows within the dermis from a bulb called a papilla. This papilla has tiny capillaries which carry blood, oxygen, nutrition, minerals and vitamins. We also have tiny nerve endings attached to the papilla, which work in tandem with adrenal glands (located just above your kidneys). Adrenal glands control our nervous system and produce cortisol, which enhances various body functions, including healthy hair growth. Thyroid glands produce the important hormone thyroxine, which is important for hair growth – if it is not balanced, it can cause hair thinning and shedding issues. So what has this to do with COVID-19? When the body is invaded by pathogens, our blood is so busy supporting and defending our organs (imperative in keeping us alive and in an homeostasis

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

state), that the blood carrying oxygen, nutrients, vitamins and minerals can become depleted, so by the time the blood reaches the hair papilla there can be a reduction of important essential amino acids (protein) and other essential elements. The usual timeframe for a change in the hair growth cycle is approximately three months, which can result in causing a premature resting phase, meaning you may experience an excessive or noticeable difference in hair density and shedding. Regarding reaction to a hair colour skin test, this can develop with contact within 48 hours, which is the time allowed prior to applying any hair colour to the scalp. The vaccine tricks our immune system, which becomes vulnerable, and can attack

our own body. This in turn can lead to a change in our hair growth cycle and skin, causing adverse reactions to hair colours, treatments and foods that would normally never have been experienced. It is vitally important all hairdressing clients have a skin allergy test 48 hours prior to any colour application regardless of whether they have had the COVID-19 virus or vaccine. It is now necessary to have a more in-depth consultation with clients, as we are now aware the vaccine alters out innate immune system. We are having to monitor very closely any possible reactions to hairdressing services. It is early days yet with the outcome of the effects of COVID-19 and the vaccine, and the long-term effects it may cause to our health, it is more important than ever to ensure professional stylists really understand the science appertaining to the hair and scalp and the chemicals that are being applied. Some reactions can be life threatening, so take heed and check first and foremost your hairdresser is qualified to a standard where they fully understand the possible reactions, and to ensure there are no incompatibility issues with previous products used. T I M E TO A DAPT How to work with your cycle, not against it

E

ver found yourself struggling to workout at certain times of the month? Or, one day you’re hitting PBs and the next, you can barely lift a dumbbell? It might be time to start adapting your workout routine to your monthly cycle. Exercising and the menstrual cycle are often confused and thought to be something that cannot be mixed – which is not the case says, Lucy Gornall, PT and head of wellness at Puresport. “Your menstrual cycle is split into four phases, across a time period of roughly 28 days,” she says. “Day one kicks off your

period, AKA your menstrual phase. Then, the follicular phase spans from around days 5 to 13, followed by the ovulatory phase on days 14 to 16 and finally the luteal phase, which runs across days 17 to 28. “During the menstrual phase, the hormones progesterone and oestrogen are at their lowest. You might struggle with energy levels, so walking, yoga and Pilates are good choices. “With oestrogen rising during the follicular phase, your energy starts to peak and morning workouts should feel a lot easier. With all this energy, try opting for more cardio-based workouts like running and cycling.

“The ovulatory phase is your most fertile time, and your energy peaks around this time. So jump on the HIIT bandwagon; short, sharp and sweet works well here. “However, if ovulation pains creep in, taking a walk or stretching with a yoga session can help. “As oestrogen declines and progesterone rises during the luteal phase, you might go from feeling energetic, to lethargic and fatigued as this continues. So while energy is high, keep up the cardio, but as energy declines and those dreaded PMS symptoms kick in, opt for short resistancebased workouts and yoga.”

F

ollowing months of lockdown restrictions, couples are finally able to make plans for their future as well as their big day. There has been a recent rise in the number of couples choosing to get engaged and plan their weddings, according to the bridal jewellery experts at Baker Brothers Diamonds. This has led to Baker Brothers Diamonds introducing a new range of engagement and wedding ring designs in reaction to a significant increase in enquiries. Director of the Bedford boutique, Rebecca Church, says: “We already had a fabulous selection of wedding ring and engagement rings, as we are well known for our competitively priced high-quality diamonds, but we are very excited about the launch of these new ring designs. One factor we are most proud of is that our rings are made in the UK, as we have some very skilled craftsmen that work for us, and we take the quality of our ring mounts as seriously as we do the diamonds that they hold. “Selecting the perfect ring is an exciting experience for the customers that visit our boutique,” she continues. “We offer a unique experience whereby they can sit with one of our diamond experts, and not only learn about the science of diamond qualities, but then they have the wonderful opportunity of choosing the ring design they want to put their chosen diamond into.” While personal preference is paramount, given this will be the piece of jewellery you will wear the most, it’s equally important to choose a style of ring that works with your lifestyle. Careful consideration of your work life and hobbies is important, as is whether your wedding band will sit well with your engagement ring when worn together. The boutique’s team of experts help guide couples looking to choose their perfect diamond ring and take them through an extensive range of ring mounts so they can find the perfect diamond and ring mount to match. As Church explains: “Enhancing our bespoke service offers couples even more choice and allows us to tailor an exquisite engagement ring to their taste and budget. We have an extensive selection of handpicked, loose diamonds to select from, alongside an array of beautiful mounts, which are made in the UK. “Our experienced diamond specialists talk to our customers about what might suit their lifestyle to ensure the ring is something they can wear comfortably every day. Different mounts will suit different requirements

“Once a couple choose a mount and their diamond, many of our rings can be ready within a week” and we also offer matching wedding bands. We take our couples through the entire journey. They can choose the shape of diamond they want, and we educate them about the importance of the quality of the diamonds. We want to involve them as much as possible in the selection process, to impart our knowledge to help them understand how the quality varies of the cut, colour and clarity.” Specially selected, ethically sourced diamonds, coupled with the long-established bespoke design service Baker Brothers provides, is the perfect match for couples looking to find their forever ring. Due to the boutique’s extensive expansion of mounts made here in the UK, the process of creating a bespoke ring, which could previously have taken several weeks, is now achievable in a much shorter timescale. “As there are now multiple mounts ready to choose from the process is a lot quicker,” Church explains. “Once the couple choose a mount and their diamond, many of our rings can be ready within a week to ten days. “Our engagement ring business is a very popular part of what Baker Brothers offers because our emphasis is focused on providing customers with the best diamonds at the best prices, and now we have even more styles of diamond shapes to choose from, whether your preference is for the beauty of a round brilliant cut or a princess, marquise, pear or cushion cut.” As for the latest bridal trends, Church reveals a resurgence of couples selecting different colours of gold for their rings. “While the classic round solitaire is still the favoured timeless choice, what are increasingly proving popular are halo styles featuring outer diamonds that surround a central diamond.” For more information contact Baker Brothers Diamonds on 01234 630 821 or visit bakerbrot hersdiamond s .com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Historic occasion Absolutely Hertfordshire talks to

Farhana Begum, museums manager at St Albans Museum + Gallery, to discover why it’s the perfect venue to tie the knot

76

Q Before we delve into weddings, can you give us an overview of the history of St Albans Museum + Gallery… A St Albans Museum + Gallery first opened to the public in June 2018 after the restoration of the historic building that it sits within. Before this beautiful local landmark became St Albans Museum + Gallery, it had a host of other uses, most famously as the Town Hall of St Albans. Built in 1831, this grand Georgian building was the centre of civic life and has been a part of the story of St Albans for almost 200 years. It has one of the few pre-Victorian courtrooms in existence, complete with atmospheric subterranean cells. The Courtroom reveals the dramatic stories of law and order in the district and visitors can now stand in the dock or oversee court proceedings from the Judge’s chair. The building also boasts a grand Assembly Room,

“It is a dynamic cultural hub with new things to see every time you visit”

ST ALBANS MUSEUM + GALLERY OFFERS DIFFERENT OPTIONS FOR THE BIG DAY

with high ceilings, huge chandeliers, and gold leaf flourishes throughout. This magnificent space has been used for balls, dances, and gala dinners in the past and is one of our most beloved spaces. The Assembly Room also hosts immersive, large-scale art installations throughout the year, which complement the roster of changing exhibitions that we hold in the Weston Gallery in the basement and the Keepers Galleries on the first floor. The Museum + Gallery is a dynamic cultural hub with new things to see every time you visit. Q Why do you think it’s such a unique venue to get married in? A St Albans Museum + Gallery is such a wonderful setting for a wedding. Perfectly located in the middle of town, its internal historic spaces really are second-tonone. The Assembly Room is such a

beautiful space with ornate gold leaf detailing and huge windows that flood the room with light. It’s a great space to celebrate your big day surrounded by all your family and friends. The Courtroom, however, lends itself to intimate ceremonies and celebrations. The wood panelling gives it great warmth and its octagonal shaping means that all your loved ones can gather around you during the ceremony and share in a wonderful, loving moment. Q What different packages do you offer? A We know that each wedding is unique and we try to tailor our offer to the needs of our clients as much as possible. We offer ceremony-only packages or whole-day celebrations in both our spaces, working with our catering partners, Leafi, to ensure everything is just right. Q What kind of capacities can be considered? A The Assembly Room can comfortably fit up to 150 people, and the Courtroom can accommodate up to 100 people. For sit-down meals, the capacities are a little lower to allow for furniture and decorations. Q After the hiatus thanks to the pandemic, are you seeing plenty of interest to hire the venue again?

A It’s been a really tough year for lots of newly engaged couples, so we’re really pleased to see interest from people looking to hire our spaces again. It’s great to see confidence returning and we’re very excited to be able to help more couples celebrate their special day with us. Q Are you introducing anything new? A We are so proud of our unique spaces that we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. We’re working hard to make sure that all our clients have a great experience with us and feel safe in our spaces. Luckily, our rooms are large with lots of windows and doors for good air circulation. The Assembly Room also offers access to a beautiful balcony overlooking St Peter’s Street, which is perfect for making sure the space is well-ventilated as well as for taking some unique wedding photographs. Q Do you take care of everything else for the big day, such as food? A We work exclusively with our inhouse caters, Leafi, who are experts at creating menus that fit precisely what our clients are looking for. They take care of the wine and drinks and can cater for sit-down wedding breakfasts, create a buffet to your tastes or provide a canape and champagne reception, depending on how clients are looking to celebrate. Q For any Hertfordshire local thinking about venues for their wedding, what would you say to encourage them to choose St Albans Museum + Gallery? A St Albans Museum + Gallery is not only a unique cultural space in the centre of beautiful St Albans, but it also offers some breathtaking historic rooms that are perfect for a special occasion. of the agreement (which means having had full financial disclosure from each other); • It must not be unfair to uphold the parties to their agreement in the circumstances at the time of the divorce. Pre-nuptial agreements are more likely to be upheld in short marriages, as there is less chance of the agreement having become out of date or superseded by unforeseen events.

Forward THINKING Pre-nuptial agreements – should you get one? B y R AY D E N S O L I C I T O R S

W

hen couples get engaged and start planning their future together, there are a multitude of things to consider. Throughout the excitement the trickier subject of finances and assets, and how to manage or protect them, is often overlooked – unsurprising perhaps, in the flush of love and wedding prep. However, though it might seem unromantic, discussing your options is sensible. We are increasingly seeing couples who recognise that, in the sad event their marriage doesn’t last, a pre-nuptial agreement could ensure financial aspects of separation are less painful. People often say, ‘pre-nups aren’t

worth the paper they are written on are they?’ Well, not necessarily so, but as with many things in law, the answer isn’t straightforward. While there is no legislation dealing with pre-nuptial agreements in the UK, there is a growing body of case law. The law in England currently states that pre-nuptial agreements are not automatically binding. However, if properly prepared, they may well be upheld. So what does this mean? One of the most well-known cases, Radmacher v Granatino, sets out the key criteria for a pre-nuptial to be capable of being upheld in the event of divorce or separation: • The agreement must be freely entered into (including with each party taking independent legal advice); • The parties must fully understand the implications

Couples considering a prenuptial agreement should each seek independent legal advice and do what they can to ensure that the agreement is done properly. This will provide a greater chance of the agreement being upheld. Contrary to popular opinion, pre-nups are not just for the rich and famous. Whilst they are often used to protect the assets of a wealthy party, couples of more modest means are increasingly drawing up prenuptial agreements. Reasons for doing so might include: protecting inherited wealth, safeguarding future inheritance, retaining control of a business, providing for children from a previous relationship, even protection from liability for an outstanding debt. So getting a pre-nuptial agreement could prove to be a very sensible decision, providing clarity, security and peace of mind – and even saving money on future legal costs. 01727 734260 enquiries@raydensolicitors.co.uk rayd en solicit ors .co.uk

IMPECCABLE WEDDING BEAUTY BY SOPHIE TILLEY

Bridal SKINCARE TIPS

Beauty expert Sophie Tilley knows everything about preparation for big events – working with both brides and celebrities. Here she gives advice on being wedding-day ready, and it all starts with your skin...

1. Cleanse properly

You may be waiting to set the date, but it’s never too early to start perfecting your regime. Two leading bridal specialists give us their advice for being your best self on the day

It may seem obvious, but many of us aren’t doing this first step quite right. And think about it, if you’re not cleaning your skin properly (that’s surface skin as well as deep into the pores) none of your serums, moisturisers and treatments can penetrate efficiently. Consider what you’re using in the morning separately to the evening as these ideally should be different textures. Morning is easy: a non-foaming facewash with a gel or cream-based product will do the trick. The evening is where you should spend a bit more time after a long day, where you’ve likely been wearing skincare and make-up. Remove your makeup with a simple cleanser or micellar water, then clean your skin thoroughly. A balm cleanser is ideal for this as it will melt away impurities from fine lines and pores. Use with a muslin or microfibre cloth for extra polishing benefits. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

UP-DOS ARE IN FOR BRIDES AT MICHAEL VAN CLARKE

2. Exfoliate regularly

New, fresh skin is what we all want. Uncover it by promoting your skin’s renewal process. This means sloughing off any dead, dry surface skin, but also stimulating the next layer to come through. We’re not talking scrubs here (save that for your body) or anything too abrasive – gently does it. The best way is by using a liquid exfoliant. One containing BHA’s (beta-hydroxy acid) and AHA’s (alpha-hydroxy acid) will rid your face of surplus debris and you don’t even need to remove it. Some are mild enough to use every day, others you can space out throughout the week. Ease yourself in and get ready to see glass-like skin revealed.

3. SPF always

This should go without saying, but protecting your skin from sun damage and all the harmful rays we’re faced with on a daily basis, is integral. Sun protection (that’s UVA & UVB rays) is the most anti-ageing product you can apply to your skin. Rain or shine, winter or summer, if you can see your hand in front of your face, you should be wearing sunscreen. I always advise SPF50 and there are plenty on the market, most of which are very affordable and will pay dividends on your flawless skin goals.

retinol at night. Antioxidant vitamin C yields a host of benefits: radiance boosting, treating uneven skin tone (pigmentation) and calming redness. Available in a variety of percentages, go for the highest you can afford. Retinol (only to be applied at night) renews skin by promoting cell turnover. It will gradually shed the outermost dead cells of your skin, revealing fresh, new layers. Retinol comes in a variety of strengths so ease yourself in and gradually build up resilience. Be sure to wear SPF the following day – very important as retinol makes your skin more sensitive to UV rays.

5. Treat your skin

Whether it’s a mask or a moisturiser, keep an eye out for these key ingredients, depending on your main concern. If you want hydration, look for hyaluronic acid (naturally occurring in our skin), which can hold a hundred times its own weight in water. Humectants like glycerin draw moisture to the top layer of the skin, a great combination. For breakouts, salicylic acid is a good antidote, helping to control excess sebum whilst calming any redness or sensitivity. If you want an all-rounder Niacinamide is a great ingredient, helping skin to repair, retain hydration levels and build resilience. sophietilley.uk

4. Serum counts

Think of serum as taking your vitamins before eating your meal. We want to boost the nutrients and actives to improve our skin’s daily diet. The key couple I’d say here are vitamin C for the morning and

HAIR BY SUMMER LANGTON, MICHAEL VAN CLARKE

Great WEDDING HAIR

Summer Langton, Senior Stylist and bridal expert at Michael Van Clarke, has expert tips on trends and prewedding care

The key trends

A key trend right now is for very soft pretty hair – from loose waves to a sophisticated but relaxed chignon. Classic half up half down remains a favourite for brides (from 1960s volume to boho plaits) and works really well with a veil. It’s also smart, but ensures brides still feel like themselves. Accessories are also becoming popular with brides – some choosing this route over wearing a veil – and many are also keen to change their look from an up-do for ceremony to down for the reception.

Your wedding routine

Get yourself into a good hair routine. That includes trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks, avoiding unnecessary blow drying and applying treatments (try Michael Van Clarke 3 More Inches Pre-wash once a week, leaving it in overnight). Do get to know the hairdresser who will be doing your hair so they know your style – and the atmosphere you want to create. I recommend a hair trial after you have chosen your dress. Take along lots of pictures – the more the better – wear a top with a similar colour and neckline and don’t be afraid to try different styles. It’s wonderful if you can time a dress fitting for after your hair trial, so you see how everything works together. vanclarke.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

“As we approach the end of 2021, nature is playing a big role in design” and our extensive library of fabrics, leathers and wallpaper. Our luxury bespoke furnishings consist of an array of sofa designs, beautiful beds and headboards as well as bedroom furniture, opulent curtains, roman blinds and pelmets. We specialise in bespoke dining sets as well as statement sideboards, coffee tables and console tables to name a few. Our showroom has a wide selection of mirrors, lighting, faux flower arrangements, original artwork, bespoke cushions and throws, and the luxury Baobab range of candles and room diffusers.

The showroom also houses our workshop, which gives us the ability to create unique, bespoke pieces of furniture and window treatments that are exclusive to us and our clients. Each piece is designed individually, and can be completely customised using the latest fabrics, leathers, and fillings, to meet your unique requirements. From re-upholstery to creating cinema rooms, our attention to detail is second to none. As we approach the end of 2021, nature is playing a big part in the design world. Sustainable designs, organic materials, shapes, and colours inspired by the greatest artist of all, nature, have become more popular with big and small brands for architecture and design. Natural and cosy materials such as linen and cotton, velvet, and ceramics are used to create a calming and organic environment in our homes. Stable and time lasting durability of the furniture and decorative items of our home is a more sustainable and nature-respecting approach that finds its central place on the interior design scene for this season. Looking forward, House of Interiors will continue to create innovative designs, work on more exciting projects and always strive to give our clients the best service in delivering luxury, top quality furnishings.

In Essendon, we are working on a project inspired by stately English country homes. The Hertfordshire Manor project brings sophisticated London style to the country, honouring a grand tradition whilst modernising it with family living in mind. We chose lovely, textured fabrics, luxury velvets for upholstery and relaxing, neutral colour palettes to represent modern comfort, which contrasted well against the polished plastered walls. The luxury of a generous budget gave us the ability to design and create unique pieces throughout the entire property, including a 14-seat dining set with a backdrop of antique mirrored walls with fretwork in the dining room, to suede upholstered walls with smoked brass detail in the master suite, automated window treatments, contemporary lighting, grand upholstered beds and a fully equipped home bar area. In Sawbridgeworth, we recently completed a project that ranged from concept design and visualisation to custom furniture creation where our client was fully involved in the design development of our unique statement pieces. We used an eclectic mix of striking colours and upholstery to meet our brief, from the breathtaking TV mirror in the master bedroom to the statement chandelier in the grand entrance hall. As a result, we created a timeless interior boasting sophisticated glamour and opulence. As interior designers, we love the fact that we can be diverse in our designs based on our individual clients and their style.

Dark shades, in particular, will feel like being wrapped up from the elements outdoors. The latest from Annie Sloan will certainly do the trick: here this living room features wall paint in Aubusson Blue, and chalk paint in Paloma, Antibes and Rodmell. et’s talk representation, but before we do, let’s take a moment to ask ourselves – are we teaching our children to love truly? One might wonder what representation has to do with love. However, if we dig deeper, we uncover one of the truths about love – we are only able to love what we understand, and can only understand what we are exposed to. People often think talks about representation are reserved for the underrepresented. However, I believe the fight for ‘representation’ is for the betterment of us all. We all benefit from seeing a full picture of what the world looks like. When we teach and expose our children to other worlds

and possibilities, they learn to make room for all. Neuroplasticity suggests our brains take shape and form connections based on our learning experiences. Research says, as early as age two, a child starts reasoning based on race, by two and a half begins to choose playmates based on racial identification, and forms racial prejudice by five. We gravitate naturally towards what we know and can identify with. This is why introducing diversity to our homes, particularly the playroom, is so important. It plays a significant role in the fight for acceptance. By ensuring our children’s toy box and bookshelf are diverse, we are teaching them to love genuinely, to understand differences and embrace diversity. Children A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

“The place to introduce diversity and positive representation is in the home”  Board and card games are a great way to improve concentration and attention span, fine motor skills and problem-solving skills, while introducing the concept of diversity. Kids like to replay board and card games over again, improving their memory. Games such as Super Sapien introduce different cultures and role models.  What shows do they watch? Are they as representative as possible? How are different cultures being represented? Children form a lot of opinions from TV shows and apps. It’s crucial to ensure they are not building stereotypes in their growing minds.  What are your childcare arrangements and how committed are they to promoting positive representation? Are they taking active steps to introduce diversity? How diverse is their staff ? If you are unsure, speak to them about their plans and policies in place to raise a broad and diverse curriculum.

need to see themselves and others represented in the books they read, the toys they play with and the media they consume. Positive representation helps children grow up with a secure self-image, appreciating themselves as they are and learning to respect others. So, what books, toys and media are our kids being exposed to? How representative are they of varying cultures? Before you get started, I’ll encourage you to check your unconscious bias, the way you speak about others in front of your kids – the change begins with us. Next, declutter. We’ve all been there, bought something on a whim and then realised it no longer aligns with our principles. Next, take stock. Go through your books, toys and favourite TV shows, categorise. On a scale of 1 to 10, how diverse are they? Once you know where you stand, these are five simple but effective ways to ensure your child’s toys are well represented.

 Books are a powerful way to introduce kids to different cultures, races and experiences. Does your child’s library display a sea of colours, concepts, abilities? Do you have a mix of books with male and female lead characters? Books with girl characters aren’t just for girls; they are for boys too. What about characters with physical challenges?  Dolls are an excellent way to teach empathy; they provide a physical representation of diversity. Brands like Rosa & Bo create dolls with varying skin tones – they have a multi-tone nesting babies set. If children can touch, care for and play with a diverse range of dolls, they will build kindness and acceptance. It’s also a great way for children to role-play and learn positive awareness and inclusion towards different races and individuals with physical challenges.

Family life plays a significant role in the thought-formation of a child. So, the place to introduce diversity and positive representation is in the home. If we are intentional about raising well-rounded, empathetic children, the toy box is one of the most effective ways to do so. Through a well-represented playroom, we teach our children to love.

Vese Aghoghovbia ‘Wolu is the founder of Philly & Friends, a children’s lifestyle brand that aims to add a drop of colour in the sea of children’s products while supporting underprivileged kids around the world. She is also the author of ‘Who Do I See in the Mirror?’

A “You can expect a one-stopshop for all your creative industries education needs”

cademy of Contemporary Music (ACM) is the place where creativity is nurtured and celebrated. Building on a 26-year history of educating creatives, ACM provides a place of learning that musicians, technicians, engineers, entrepreneurs and game developers alike can call home, taught by industry professionals who are enjoying active careers within the industry that you one day want to work in. Situated in the heart of creative cities, Guildford, London and Birmingham, ACM offers courses in performance, artistry, songwriting, business, technical services, music production, game development and more, with study options at a range of academic levels including their brand new Integrated Masters programme. Designed in collaboration with a range of industry partners, the Integrated Masters programme in Cultural and Creative Industries is at the cutting edge of education. Choose from a range of delivery routes: from an accelerated three-year undergraduate to postgraduate course or a more traditional four-year pathway.

The possibilities are endless. Combined with their diploma and degree level courses, you can expect a one-stop-shop for all your creative industries education needs; a great alternative to the traditional college and university route. ACM also enjoys a partnership with Europe’s largest recording facility, Metropolis Studios, where 70% of this year’s BRIT award winners were mixed, mastered or recorded. Metropolis continues to be the leading mastering and recording house in the UK thanks to its chart-topping client list and ground-breaking technological marvels, like its 5G-powered learning environment and Dolby Atmos 3D recording studio. This year also marks the launch of the ACM Games Academy. Working with pioneers like Supermassive Games and Alienware, students will have access to world-class computing facilities and industry-grade game development software. You’ll learn about all the different disciplines within Games Development, with every student receiving a specialist Dell / Alienware gaming laptop by ACM to help them with their studies. FACE YOUR FINANCES The trickier conversations! Get comfortable about discussing your finances honestly. If you are ready to share a bathroom you need to be comfortable laying your credit cards on the table too. Sign up for Experian or similar and get a detailed free outline of your current credit report. Mortgage lenders assess a joint application in the same way whether it is for a married couple, civil partnership, co-habiting couples or siblings/friends. Marriage doesn’t itself affect your ability to get a mortgage. Being tied to another person financially does.

MAKE A LIST AND CHECK IT TWICE You may think a newly built town centre apartment is nice, but it might be on your partner’s naughty list. Find out where your common goals are and what you are prepared to compromise on. Definitely be clear on any deal breakers. List important factors such as location, budget, garden, balcony, home office, parking and rate their importance.

LEGALLY BONDED

DOUBLE JEOPARDY You and your partner or friend are ready to buy a property together – but what should you consider? The founder of Trend & Thomas offers some advice By B E L I N DA- JA N E G U I L F OY L E

B

uying a home together is such an exciting stage of life. The pandemic has also fueled a huge increase in Joint Mortgage applications, a whopping 60% increase from cohabiting couples. Couples facing a lockdown apart, fast tracked their decision to move in together. Whether you are married, a couple or friends co-habiting, Trend & Thomas have put together a little advice for making it a positive adventure.

ASK SOME QUESTIONS Why do you want to buy a home together? Is it because you are both financially ready? Is it better to buy than to rent in your current market? This will help you see each other’s perspective and make the trickier conversations that are coming, a little easier.

You will need to decide between registering as Joint Tenants or Tenants in Common. Joint Tenants have equal rights to the whole property, that is you both own half each. Each tenant has the ‘right of survivorship’ – this means that if you die, full ownership will pass automatically to the other tenant(s). You can’t leave your ownership of the house to someone else in your will. Tenants in common is where each person owns a share of the home, and the shares may be of unequal value, for example one person owns 25% and the other owns 75%. If one of you dies, the share is not automatically transferred to the other owner and you can leave your share to someone else in your will. You should also consider having a Declaration of Trust drawn up. In the event of a split, this legally binding document explains how the sale proceeds of the property should be divided. Unmarried couples could also consider a Cohabitation Agreement. When a married couple separates, the court considers the assets and redistributes them in a way that is deemed fair. An unmarried person does not have a right to a fair distribution of assets, so it is important to be clear from the outset. And once you have mastered all of the above then, you need to start discussing who has control of the remote and if there is such a thing as too many cushions! trendandthomas.co.uk
