une is my favourite month of the year. I may be a little biased (my birthday falls on the 11th) but there is always real sense of excitement in London as summer begins. Parks become more than thoroughfares, pub gardens are no longer just for smokers and rosé sales skyrocket. To capture a little of this joie de vivre, our fashion shoot this month celebrates flowers with some of the season’s prettiest embellished designs. Turn to page 24 for the Vilshenko number that has stolen my heart (and my self-restraint). I’ve noticed that Londoners, despite how conscientious they may be abroad, always seem to forgo any form of suncare in the city. To remind us all how important it is to lather on the SPF, we have rounded up the best suncreams on page 30.

5 C&A_June16_EDS_LETTER.indd 5

In this issue we are also celebrating another favourite summer staple: the picnic. From Fortnums to Paul’s Bakery, page 38 is all about hampers full of goodies – well, you’ve got to have something to soak up all that Pimms and Aperol. Our usual excellent fashion, kids’ and interiors pages are interspersed with trips to Bahrain, a fabulous Father’s Day gift guide and our interview with designer Matthew Williamson who discusses his first ever interiors collaboration. I hope you enjoy the issue (and my favourite month). Ciao! ◆

nyone who dreams of running away with the circus is probably dreaming of Giffords. The romance of the tradition is alive and well at in the big top at this quirky, family-run outfit, whose nomadic troupe in its hand-painted wagons present a show that takes the traditional 19th century aesthetic and reinvents it for the 21st century. Touring the country’s village greens from May until September, its only London stop is at Chiswick House, where a three-week residence is set to sell out fast. ‘Come on down to the whip-crackin’, high-tumblin’, bottle-jugglin’, horsewranglin’, wagon-trundlin’, tent-raisin’, stake-drivin’, boot-stompin’, spur-janglin’, rain dancin’, gold-rushin’, bounty-huntin’, bugle-tootin’, banjo-pluckin’, Hell-raisin’, Thanks-givin’, Giffords Circus show!’ goes the promise.

It’s a whip-crackin’,

SPUR-JANGLIN’, rain-dancin’, BANJOPLUCKIN’ show ‘It’s hard to define how, but Giffords is very different from other circuses,’ says Cal McCrystal, director of this year's production, The Painted Wagon. Alexander Palace-based McCrystal may be most famous as the man behind acclaimed comedy in One Man Two Guvnors – the show that became the fastest-selling play in the history of theatre, in what became for him a career-defining moment – but he says that Giffords is the job that he feels most at home with, and the one that he gets the most praise for. ‘Even when

I’m at the RSC, in the beautiful Swan Theatre, people talk to me about Giffords. And when I was asked to talk about an Ayckbourn play with Libby Puves on the radio recently, the discussion quickly led to Giffords. It’s what everyone wants to talk about.’ The show has a very strong comedy thread to it, says McCrystal, which is central to its appeal. ‘The artwork and aesthetic is very traditional but we’re not making a replica of a traditional show; it’s a new version altogether. It’s very meta too, with lots of irony and humour. It feels warm and small with an air of experimental theatre.’ The theme for 2016 is Western (previous themes have included Greek mythology, Janis Joplin’s 1960s and War and Peace), which is particularly exciting for McCrystal. ‘It’s a world that everyone has familiarity with and we can twist it in our special way.’ In addition to the acclaimed and fundamental horses, performers will

include the Ethiopian troupe from last year’s show, back with a new Chinese Pole act (‘one of the hardest circus disciplines,’ says McCrystal) and promised stars of the old west include Miss Nancy TrotterLandry, El Gifford and Tweedy the Clown. Despite working mostly in theatre, McCrystal says he feels ‘priviliged’ to work in circus, which he loves for its ‘palette’ and because he has a selfconfessed short attention span. ‘You never need to watch something go on and on in the circus,’ he says. For many years, he was involved with the Cirque de Soleil, which in budget terms is at the very other end of the circus scale from Giffords.

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

C&A_June16_GIFFORDS CIRCUS_02.indd 12

‘The last show I worked on for Cirque had a budget of £66 million – but when you ask whether it’s easier to be creative with too much money or not enough, you soon realize that it’s easier to be creative with less.’ Cirque de Soleil’s epic global productions ‘are so concerned with the packaging that something is lost,’ says McCrystal. ‘I’d love to see them do something more human.’ McCrystal’s comedy style is particularly human, very physical and ‘slightly deconstructed’. He loves ‘having fun with the convention of performance – I want the audience to know that they’re looking at actors playing characters, so that they’re aware of the real person, not just the flashy juggler with his act.’ So he designs all the comedy around the actual people, never in advance. And movement’s important too – he likes a lot of activity. ‘I never have people sitting on the sofa drinking tea.’ Set up by Oxford graduate Nell Gifford and her husband

Toti more than 10 years ago and based in the Cotswolds, Gifford’s has become the circuit’s most stylish and intelligent circus and its annual residence in London attracts what McCrystal calls ‘the Glyndebourne crowd’. ‘Here, people bring picnics,’ he says. ‘Last year, one family brought a table and dining chairs. It was the campest thing I’ve ever seen.’ 

Park Life

Summer is here and with it our favourite London festival, Field Day in Victoria Park Wo r d a c at h e r i n e h a l e s

S

ince its inception in 2007, Field Day has gone on to become a summer staple for Londoners across the board. The pilgrimage is made for many reasons. The festival’s setting in the lovely Vicky Park has quite a lot to do with it but it is the lineup that really draws the crowds. Where else can you see Patti Smith, Caribou and FKA Twigs in the same place? This year promises to be more of the same with James Blake headlining Saturday’s festivities and Sunday being helmed by exciting, innovative artist PJ Harvey. The multi award-winning English

musician can always be counted on to entertain and inspire – a perfect example being her sell out project at Somerset House early last year during which she recorded her entire ninth album inside an architectural installation. The structure, a recording studio in the form of an enclosed box, had one-way glazing, displaying PJ Harvey, her band, producers and engineers as a mutating, multidimensional sound sculpture allowing visitors to become voyeurs. The headliners will be joined by the vibey stylings of Air, UK hip-hop institution Roots Manuva, delightful oddity Adam Green (likely accompanied

15 C&A_JUNE16_FIELD DAY.indd 15

by his coeterie of eccentric performance artist friends) and indie darlings, the Mystery Jets plus many, many more. In addition to the stellar line-up, visitors will be able to eat and drink to their heart’s content with food vans from Street Feast and Venn Street Market peppering the park alongside London Brewer’s Market and Tim Peaks coffee. But where to enjoy your delicious meal? One of the things that makes Field Day so special is the hay bale and bunting strewn Village Mentality, where revellers can enjoy fete-like activities and games all weekend. To celebrate Field Day’s 10th year the 2016 Games will explore the theme of ageing. How, you ask? A Nappywearing Relay Race and some mid life crisis Pogoing are both on the docket as well as Buggy Wars and a Stag and Hen themed Tug of War. All this will act as a warm-up for the ultimate attraction: the eating contest, which this year will encompass ten years of competitive eating at the festival and is sure to be as messy as it is entertaining. All this combines to make Field Day an essential part of our June calendar.  Field Day 11 - 12 June Victoria Park, E3 fielddayfestivals.com

DAKOTA DITCHEVA Meeting the 17 year-old Muay Thai champ

How did you first get into Muay Thai? My mum was a champion combat sports woman. I inherited my love of fighting from her. My first Muay Thai fight was when I was four. What’s your greatest achievement so far? I’m really proud of winning the Most Outstanding Junior Female award at the 2015 World Championships; it’s an award nobody in the country has ever won before. But I like to think my best fights are still ahead of me.

CONFIDENTIAL Get in shape with the latest fitness news and trends Wo r d s e l i z a b e t h h u t t o n

What do you do to physically and mentally prepare for a fight? Train hard. The fitter you get, the more confident you become. Soon you begin visualising how you’re going to win the upcoming match. Right before the fight I just try to relax. It’s best not to overthink things as it saps the energy you need in the ring. What kind of diet do you follow and what's your go-to post workout meal? When I am training, I stick to a really balanced lifestyle with lots of protein. As a fight draws closer, I cut out carbs and increase my fat intake to fuel my workouts. Afterwards I need Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Who is your biggest fitness inspiration? I look up to UFC champion Ronda Rousey but my biggest inspiration is my mum. She knows what it takes to be a champion and I trust her. Fitness models on Instagram have changed the industry; now you can be glamorous and sporty. ◆ 15 Worship Street, EC2A; fightcitygym.co.uk

THE GIBSON Come for gourmet cocktails, stay for behind-bar theatrics Wo r d s e l i z a b e t h h u t t o n

ant to be impressed? Head to The Gibson in Clerkenwell. Here everything, from the menu to the mixology, is done with a serious flourish. Owned by Nightjar's former bar manager, Marian Beke, this place pushes the boundaries of mixology as much - if not more than - its cousin, but with an added extra: theatrics. Watching the barmen work is a lot like watching a magic show and bloody brilliant. Spoilt for choice, we struggled to order our first drink so our server recommended the bar's namesake, The Gibson; a Tanqueray gin, Mancino secco and pickled onion martini. Arriving in an ice-cold metal martini glass, the three ingredient cocktail sounds simple enough but is in fact a seriously strong mix of sweet and sour flavours. A refreshingly crisp starter. From this, we moved onto the Electric Earl and the Tiger Balm. The former is a gin based, Earl Grey liqueur, grapefruit, lime and grass cordial concoction that comes garnished with a Sichuan button. This tiny little flower electrocutes your tongue and numbs your entire mouth, the finish, however, is surprisingly clean. The Tiger Balm on the other hand is a mix of tequila, chilli, lime, grapefruit and fresh spices. With turmeric, date and tamarin chutney and lemon balm it's another brilliant drink. Promising to take you on an adventure like no other, this is the bar you need to visit. 

Tonic & Remedy Innovative combinations meet high quality ingredients on City Road Wo r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s

S

tepping into Tonic & Remedy, I immediately feel right at home. The staff are friendly and familiar and the decor is light and engaging. Located in the M by Montcalm Hotel on City Road, the small, orange neon sign in the window indicates the restaurant and bar within. My friend and I are lead upstairs to the dining area and are placed in the fabulous care of Olivier, the breakfast and lunch manager. Despite visiting for lunch, we are (far too easily) cajoled into having a few cocktails; I am treated to the Jamming, a concoction of Beefeater Gin, pomegranate and basil jam, mint and black pepper extract. It even comes with its own caramelised spoon which I munch on while perusing the menu. We decide to try something from every section; the risotto balls are crispy on the outside and pure, gooey indulgence on the inside and the haloumi and honey is sweet and rich. Next up is the crispy pig crunch with Yorkshire rhubarb. This is as good as it

sounds: flaky, tender pork encased in golden breadcrumbs, punctuated by the piquant rhubarb purée. Despite being tempted by the liver, mash and crispy bacon option, I choose the fillet steak for my main which comes accompanied by thick cut chips and a large Portobelo mushroom. The meat is flavorful, if a touch overcooked for my tastes (I prefer my steak blue) and the chips are fluffy and crunchy in equal measure. We order a side of greens in a lacklustre nod to healthy eating and I am soon wolfing down the perfectly cooked tenderstem broccoli with gusto. The hearty French red, chosen by Olivier, is going down far too easily and somehow we manage a pudding each. For me, this is the meal’s standout: my deconstructed passion fruit cheesecake is a decadent medley of zesty sorbet, crumbly biscuit and rich cream cheese. A new favorite lunch spot found. TO N I C & R E M E DY 151 - 157 City Road, EC1Y tonicandremedy.co.uk

n import from America and ever-popular with celebs, the classic but utterly cute design of Salt-water Sandals specially made for toddlers is a winwin. Eschewing the glittery, embellished and overwrought designs so often offered to kids these days, these plain and simple summer shoes remain stylish while being completely functional. Moulded for Baby’s growing feet with built-in arch support, the ace in the Salt-water sleeve is that these sandals can get wet – in fact, getting wet is good for them and allows them to mould to the shape of the foot, so littles have the allclear to splash around. 

n stepping inside our luxury villa it is impossible not to let a sense of serenity and peace wash over me. As it turns out, this is exactly what The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain is all about. Located a mere 11 km from the airport, the hotel consists of a 245-room resort located on 20 acres of private beachfront encircling a beautiful lagoon of deepest blue. Of the nearly 250 rooms on offer, 31 are suites and 42 are Club Level rooms but the real jewels in The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain’s crown are the 23 stunning seafront villas. These each boast three bedrooms, a private pool, beach access and a 24-hour butler service ready to cater to your every whim. The interiors are inspired by ‘60s architecture, with vibrant colours, wood panelling and exposed beams. There is also a generous dollop of South American and Mediterranean influence which melds together to create a uniquely engaging environment. Although inspired by ‘60s cool, there is nothing old fashioned about the facilities; the entire villa is kitted out

with state-of-the art amenities designed to make a guest’s stay as relaxing as possible. Their only drawback? You may never want to leave. After wandering around for a good fifteen minutes, fiddling with airconditioning settings and leaping onto one of the softest beds I have ever encountered, I finally turn my attention to the view. From some parts of the resort, guests can see the Arabian Gulf; from our villa we are treated to a fabulous, unrestricted view of picturesque Manama Bay. The most striking characteristic of the villas, however is their tranquillity. Nestled amidst the lush greenery of the gardens, they feel secluded without being isolated and offer the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of modern life. I am also struck by the blend of sophisticated elegance and laid-back, beachy vibes in the design. Access to the water is also key. The Kingdom of Bahrain boasts beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures attracting holidaymakers year-round. So, being able to dip into the crystal

The stylish interior of a beachfront villa

THE SPA IS A HAVEN

TO LEAVE GUESTS

restored and relaxed Spend your time in the lap of luxury

waters of the lagoon at any time is a luxury that cannot be overstated and one that is valued highly by visitors to The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. When I am finally able to tear myself away from the villa, I start to explore the resort. Aside from the lovely decor and the many restaurants (which I will expand on later), I am drawn to The Ritz-Carlton Spa. A reason to stay all on its own, the spa is a haven offering relaxing treatments and signature products to leave guests refreshed and restored. I am particularly impressed by the thalassotherapy pool, a large, warm, mineral-rich pool with hydrotherapy jets to ease away aches and pains, allowing visitors to emerge revitalised and oh-sorelaxed. There is also the usual spa offering of massages and beauty treatments but all with that specific Ritz-Carlton finish that seems to add a sheen of luxury and of going the extra mile. For anyone wishing to exert a little energy, there is a fully stocked gym and also beachfront tennis courts and an air-conditioned indoor squash court. I am even able to indulge in a little retail therapy in the shopping arcade as I wander.

Having worked up an appetite, I have a serious decision to make; The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain has a veritable smorgasbord of restaurants and bars on offer and all sound irresistible. La Med lays on a fabulously lavish buffet, while The Gourmet Lounge specialises in Old World classics with decor inspired by La Belle Epoque - a truly regal dining experience. If you’re looking for something a little more exotic then Nirvana is for you; Executive Chef Mahipal Singh creates tantalising dishes complemented by the rich, sultry decor all set to the live music of the ‘Santoor’. to go for a really good steak. Lighter bites are available from La Plage, the resort’s poolside restaurant (perfect for a lazy lunch with plenty of wine) and from Thai Lounge. A quintessential afternoon tea can be had at The Lobby Lounge but my personal favourite is the Burlington Club. where guests can stop for a cocktail and a fine Cuban cigar before or after dinner. Another aspect of the hotel that makes it a destination for travellers is the Club Level. This is designed to create the feeling of a ‘hotel within a hotel’, to extend an extra level of exclusivity, comfort and personalized service. It is located on two dedicated floors to ensure privacy and offers a separate lounge area with complimentary food and drink throughout the day. It is a wrench to leave at the end of my stay as weeks could be spent here without ever needing (or wanting) to venture out of the resort. The amenable staff, glorious design and excellent facilities without a doubt put The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain among the leading luxury hotels in the world. 

t the Chapel has one of those stories. Founders Catherine and Ahmed stumbled upon the building by chance during a trip to the tiny Somerset village of Bruton. They were looking for a new home in the country; what they found was a derelict Methodist chapel in need of a great deal of TLC. They transformed the crumbling nook into a marvellous modern residence. Years later, they decided to turn their visionary home into a hotel – so now the building boasts an on-site bakery and restaurant as well as eight exceptionally lovely rooms. 

ree wi-fi, great cocktails, comfortable chairs and a generally relaxed atmosphere reign within the hotel’s Clubroom, which vies with the sundappled terrace as the premier spot for a little countryside r and r. And there’s free parking too, in an enclosed spot a short walk from the main building. 

THE FOOD

A

THE AREA

t the Chapel is locally (and indeed nationally) renowned for the quality of its fare. The coffee and treats available in the bakery put most of London’s hipster bread-slingers to shame, while the restaurant serves top-notch grub of a creative yet unpretentious bent: think wood-fired pizza and locally sourced specialties prepared with a dash of Mediterranean flair. Oh, and it’s situated within the chapel itself, with huge windows, lush views and contemporary art to ogle. 

A

h, Bruton! What a wonderful surprise this little village is to the first-time visitor: cute enough to decorate a tourist’s teapot and surrounded by rolling fields, yet still amply blessed with cosmopolitan delights. Not least the world-class Hauser & Wirth gallery of contemporary art, a brisk tramp across the fields, and trend-leading design boutique Caro (carosomerset.com), five minutes from the hotel. 

HOT SEATS Primrose Hill local Matthew Williamson’s flamboyant fashion translates to interiors in a new collaboration with Duresta Interview Pendle Harte

PENDLE HARTE: You have worked with interiors before, collaborating with The Rug Company and Osborne and Little, but this is your first foray into furniture. Where did you look for inspiration? MATTHEW WILIAMSON: The collection came to life mostly by looking at pieces of my own, bought mostly from antique markets or dealers over the years and which I’ve adapted or updated myself. I also collect pictures and samples of anything that catches my eye, so it was a fun process to build a collection which came from my personal favourite pieces.

fashion and interiors industries that I see a real crossover in my work. I imagine that a woman who buys one of my dresses also wants a fabulous sofa or wallpaper and it’s this 360 degree lifestyle approach that I love most. PH: How would you describe your own home? What are your favourite things and where do they come from? MW: I’m lucky with my home as it has good bones. It’s a Victorian townhouse and the rooms are large with high ceilings and great original details so really my job was just to dress it and make it personal to me. I love the lounge most of all. It’s a large lozenge shape with an old wooden barrel door, original parquet floors and big bay windows overlooking the garden. This room is quite neutral but the furniture and items I’ve collected over the years add colour and character and tell a personal story. It’s changing all the time. I love moving things around

I’M NOT about glitz. MY MOST

treasured items ARE inexpensive, SENTIMENTAL PIECES

PH: Your style has always involved colour and print. How do fashion colours and prints translate into furniture? MW: My passion is for colour, patterns, textiles, travel, culture and exotic elements. I love bringing my DNA to whatever product I’m working on. While fashion has been my main career focus, there is such a huge overlap between the

HOMES & INTERIORS / PROFILE I prefer

to MAKE SOMETHING poor look RICH regularly to keep it fresh. It’s easier than you sometimes think to make your space evolve, and adding a few small touches here and there can help to update your look. Flowers, candles, cushions, book piles and pictures are easy ways to add areas of interest. A bit like my clothes, I prefer to make something poor look rich. I think that comes from my work ethic and from my parents. I’m not about glitz. My most treasured items are inexpensive, sentimental pieces: a necklace with charms picked up on my travels and a bowl of rocks collected from the beach. PH: How did the collaboration with Duresta come about? MW: Duresta is a brilliant brand based in the UK, making all its furniture by hand. I’m drawn to brands which value craftsmanship and quality and they certainly do that. Making my first line of furniture with them has been a passion project which I’ve loved. It’s been a real journey to see these pieces come to life over the past year and I’m thrilled with the results as they really reflect my brand’s DNA. Now, the difficult thing for me is to edit which pieces I want to have in my own home.

PH: What did you learn from it? MW: I learnt so much. It’s always fascinating to step out of your comfort zone and pick up new skills and work on different projects. I totally underestimated the time, patience and craftsmanship of each and every piece until I visited the Duresta factory in Long Eaton and saw for myself what a labour of love the entire process is. PH: Who are your favourite designers, both fashion and interiors? MW: My favourite designers are Ossie Clarke, Zandra Rhodes, Christian Lacroix and Dries Van Noten. PH: What will your next fashion collection look like? MW: The next fashion collection will drop on my website in May. It’s a fresh collection of separates for the ‘see now, buy now, wear now’ consumer. We have built a new fashion and lifestyle platform with products available on our site. PH: Are any other interior projects or collaborations in the pipeline? MW: I’ve just launched a collection of stationery and am soon to launch sportswear in May, followed by a designer colouring book by the end of the year and I then have my eye on childrenswear and china.  Matthew Williamson for Duresta is available at Harrods

VILLAGE LIFE Do you dream of village living?

N

This is a popular village with those wanting the country lifestyle in Cambridgeshire To identify the modern ‘good lifers’ Strutt & Parker categorised those moving to villages into different types. These include ‘the Downtons’ who are wealthy families who escape the city for a prime village house, and ‘Rusticarians’. These are young entrepreneurs who home work from a broadband bungalow or cyber cottage. And finally we

ew research shows the village is back in fashion as more of us turn our backs on the grit of urban survival. Mention villages to most Londoners and they may assume you’re talking about one of the capital’s urban ersatz. But according to research from Strutt & Parker, a fifth of the home movers want to live in a real village, away from the city. Escaping city life and embracing the country is a trend created by both high house prices in urban areas as well as the opportunities presented by home working, not to mention a desire to don wellies and waxed jackets. Other reasons, the research highlights, include lower living costs, a healthier lifestyle, more privacy and being closer to family and friends.

PROPERTY / RURAL RETREAT have the ‘rural newbies’; families looking for somewhere to raise their children. Those with a bucolic bent also want, outstanding countryside views (or sea views), walking trails, sporting facilities, cycling or biking trails and equestrian facilities, the research shows. They’re clearly a hard bunch to please. For Strutt & Parker it is simple – a community of between 3,000 and 10,000 houses. But for the vast majority of London families shipping out, close proximity to a train station is going to be essential. Here are three villages that come close pastoral perfection.

The Old Forge, Thruxton £575,000

GREAT SHELFORD

his is a popular village with those wanting the country lifestyle in Cambridgeshire but who also need to commute back to the City. It’s an hour and 20 minutes from Liverpool Street to Shelford station, which makes it just about commutable. The village’s treats include pubs, restaurants, banks, cycle shops, a deli, bakery and garden centre. What can you buy there? Try this five bedroom, high-spec house with a double garage and garden. It’s for sale with Strutt & Parker at £1,495,000 01223 459502.

T

THRUXTON

hruxton is an ancient village close to the A303 on which you’ll drive to Andover train station. From there trains can be caught to London Waterloo which takes an hour and 20 minutes. The village has a green, two pubs, a church, community hall and a school. A garden centre is scheduled to open soon, and there’s a petrol station cum farm shop in Weyhill, the next village along. What can you buy there? A four

close proximity to a train station is going to be essential bedroom cottage with a huge garden in the centre of Thruxton, opposite the village green. On the market for £575,000, 01722 344058.

SUTTON COURTENAY

his ravishingly beautiful village sits on the River Thames between Oxford and Didcot and is renowned as the home of Herbert Asquith, the prime minister who took Britain in the First World War. The village has a school, a village hall, cricket and football pitches and three pubs including a popular gastro pub. London is just 45 minutes away via Didcot, which is a short drive from the village. What can you buy there? This plot of land, which is on the market for £325,000, has planning permission for a five bedroom home almost on the water’s edge of the Thames. The Thames bimbles past the wonderful 1.4-acre plot. pdated daily, Portico’s online Yield Map aims to give motivated buy-to-let investors the data they need to inform their next property purchase. Here at Portico, we’ve recently witnessed growth in areas which will soon benefit from good access to Crossrail stations across the capital. Old Oak Common and New Queens Park will likely experience further growth as a result of a new railway interchange replacing the site of the old and unsightly maintenance depot. The new station, which will accommodate both Crossrail and HS2, will attract a professional demographic demanding reliable access across London, and beyond. Elsewhere, the redevelopment of Tottenham Hale, and the construction of a new stadium and public square will add value to the surrounding area, and we expect positive change in capital values locally as a result. Existing clients whose Tottenham properties have historically achieved low rents are being advised to hold, as opposed to sell, and new entrants are advised to integrate a property in N17 to their portfolios as professional tenants continue to consider alternative locations away from Zones 1 and 2. ◆

oming from a creative background, studying Fine Art at Wimbledon University of the Arts London, I had dreams of being a successful artist. After completing my degree in 2011, I got a taste for interior design and decided to use my creative skills in the property industry. Since completing the transformation from struggling artist to passionate estate agent, my love for property has continued to grow. In my spare time, you will find me at Columbia Road Flower Market, at home making soya candles, enjoying long walks in Hampstead heath or helping friends with interior design ideas. I still paint now and then, but struggle to find the time to complete paintings. Whilst the media spotlight shines on East London, I feel that Kentish Town in recent years has quietly undergone a revolution. It has always attracted left-wing thinkers and writers, and has a

It has always attracted left-wing thinkers & writers

strong live music scene, but now the area has emerged as something of a more rounded cultural hotspot. The Kentishtowners are a section of trendy and artistic cliental who often use their homes to showcase their creativity. It is not unusual to find a road with a selection of multi-coloured mid19th century houses, accessorised with beautiful plants and flowers with rustic interiors full of upcycled furniture and period features. For non-Kentishtowners, candy-coated coloured streets such as Kelly Street, Leverton Street and Falkland Road leave you feeling like you have entered into a magical wonderland. Lets not forget the large range of quirky independent shops, galleries, award-winning pubs, bars and even

a theatre. Most of these business have been unusually creative by thinking outside the box with their branding and layout. Restaurants such as The Oxford, Guanabana and Patron Cave à Manger are great examples of this, mixing old and new English design in a unique way. Creativity is intelligence having fun, as Albert Einstein would say! An interesting fact about Kentish Town that was shared with me at one of my first valuations by a stern but charming odder man, was that Kentish Town was originally a settlement along the River Fleet which flowed through the area and today runs underground. The Fleet was a major river, with its estuary possibly containing the oldest tidal mill in the world. Every year The Kentish Town Fleet Festival celebrates the amazing creativity that they say “like the River Fleet, runs quietly and unassumingly through Kentish Town”. It is an absolute pleasure to be part of such a diverse community where house prices are increasing steadily. Everyone wants a bit of Kentish Town! ◆

RADICAL MAKEOVERS?

T

he capital’s race to build more homes is having an unexpected result for some of its less predictable neighbourhoods, says Nigel Lewis. High prices and fewer homes for sale in the most desirable parts of London mean areas that have been less fashionable for years, are getting makeovers and – more importantly for London’s accommodation-starved residents – new homes. Areas that buyers might have previously struck off their wish lists are now go-to areas. And the developers’ cranes are following suit, crowding once sleepy skylines with their one-legged swingers. Here we look at some of the areas being upgraded with both regeneration cash as well as new, gleaming apartments developments.

apartment, although you won’t be able to move in until 2018. Smaller but more boutique is Clissold Quarter by developer Higgins, which is building 158 apartments overlooking Clissold Park, famous locally both for its beauty and boating lake. One bedroom apartments start at £425,000. For more information call 020 8498 6509 or visit www.clissold-quarter.com. u

CENTRAL: SOHO SQUARE

ou might assume Soho and regeneration wouldn’t go together given its West End location, but only recently has the area’s sleazier reputation begun to wear off – much to the horror of fans such as Steven Fry and Marc Almond, who want to stop what they call its sanitisation. The arguments over Soho centre around its retail makeover and the loss of the small, independent shops that make it

so unique and, consequently, apartment developers are treading carefully. Rather than shiny new blocks, older properties are being upgraded. The most recent example is the Duke of Portland’s former townhouse on Soho Square. Built during the late 17th century, this Grade II listed property is now called 10, Soho Square, a development by Oakmayne Bespoke where just one apartment is left to purchase for £4.75 million. tokey has long been making the journey from under-invested backwater to a fashionable neighbourhood and even though City workers and new homes developers have arrived in numbers, it maintains its original bohemian, bearded identity. Two new developments are currently under construction to the west of Stoke Newington train station and the A10 High Street. The largest is a vast new neighbourhood being built overlooking two reservoirs by Berkeley where some 5,500 homes will eventually be completed. FAMOUS PLACES London hides a plethora of celebrity homes. These are the most recent to come on the market

ROTTEN PLACE TO BUY?

t’s four decades since punk spilled spitting and screaming onto our TV screen and the Sex Pistols’ released their debut single, Anarchy in the UK. Original band members Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock shocked TV interviewers and caused mayhem at concerts. But it didn’t last long. After touring the US, Rotten – real name John Lydon – left the band in 1978 and retreated to a house he’d just bought in Chelsea. Lydon, now 60, sold the five-floor property in 1981 when he moved to New York, and the building has since been divided up into two apartments, with a blue plaque outside to celebrate his time there. Back then the apartment on Gunter Grove had smoke-stained walls and a low-slung futon style couch, but it’s since had a makeover and is yours to rent for £1,295 a week. u Savills 0207 578 9020 www.savills.co.uk

nominated for a Grammy award. But after nine years together the band broke up, blaming internal conflicts. The singer has been ploughing his own furrow since then and has a new solo album out next month These People - with songs tackling topics such as the war in Syria, the Arab Spring uprisings and the death of a close friend. But it all started at Vernon Yard Recordings, an independent label owned by Virgin Records based in Notting Hill. The building was converted into houses, where a four bedroom mews house is now up for sale at £4.5m. u Domus Nova 0207 727 1717 www.domusnova.com

And it’s not the first time she has played feisty female characters. Before joining the period drama, she had parts in Doctor Who and After You’ve Gone, but has also produced movies including a short film starring Charles Dance. The actress also has an eye for property; she shared a penthouse flat with her brother in Pimlico before moving into her own pad, an interest that evidently runs in the family as her father John is chairman of the Groucho Club and part owns the Sloane Square hotel. aster of suspense Alfred Hitchcock got his first shot at directing in 1922 with the film Number 13. This and many of his early films were shot at Gainsborough Studios. However, at the start of WW2 the building’s chimney was deemed a liability during air raids, and the studio was sold in 1949. After starting life as a power station, then going into the movie business, the building in Hoxton has also been used as a whisky store, housed theatre productions, and a fashion show by Alexander McQueen.
