Why the Essex local is having a ball

A

s someone that feels far more comfortable being outdoors than in, I'm lucky to live on a beautiful stretch of the Essex coast. Just over ten years ago I met my wife Carrie, and shortly after agreed to move to Brightlingsea so we were closer to her family. I can honestly say I have never regretted the decision once. We now have a beautiful daughter that we enjoy many a day playing in and around the water with, whether that is swimming, paddle boarding or simply getting our feet wet on the beach. From a teenager I have worked in the motor industry, starting as an apprentice with BMW, and now 17 years later being in the fortunate position to look after my own site. For many years this meant I was required to do long commutes spending time away from the family, but in recent times I have been fortunate enough to work with the Colchester BMW & MINI site in the heart of Essex. When I say fortunate, I mean I am surrounded with dedicated and loyal team members that have worked tirelessly to support me and the business through an incredibly demanding time for all. Nothing has ever been too much, and I really believe that the Essex grit and tenacity has shone through for us whenever times got tough. As we all continue to navigate through this ever-changing landscape, if I was to give you one piece of advice, it would be to make sure you surround yourselves with great people where possible. People that genuinely care about your wellbeing and want to see you and your loved ones happy in life. It will make all the difference.

aised in and still a resident of Essex, Nadia Ali is someone who makes an impact on you from the first time you meet. I’ve only known her a few months, yet the warmth she exudes makes you feel from the start like you’re catching up with a trusted friend. In her professional life, she is a highly accomplished powerhouse who moved from a career as a barrister to become an award-winning radio presenter, and she’s also held her place in the British Bangladeshi Power 100 since 2013. Life hasn’t always been easy for Ali, yet if you ask those who know her, the first thing they’ll tell you about her is that she’s always smiling and has a good word for everyone. A victim of domestic abuse, Ali has overcome considerable trauma to find herself stronger and uses the most challenging experiences of her life to help others who are suffering. A loved and loving daughter, wife and mother, she prizes people above all else, and with family and friends around her is choosing now to share her story, past and present, as well as her hopes for the future. As she balances

a busy work schedule, home-life and connecting with her considerable Instagram community (@simplynadiaali), Ali took the time to catch up with me over an exquisite home-cooked curry.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME – GROWING UP IN ESSEX

“I was born in Tower Hamlets and raised in Essex. This county has the perfect balance of city life and greenery. Essex has a really rich heritage, beautiful places to visit full of history and many other wonderful things to do. We have a multicultural community and are always busy celebrating and enjoying different festivities together. I love how inclusive Essex is – on each street there are neighbours with different beliefs, from different cultures, yet we all support each other, live happily side-by-side and want to learn about these differences as well as our similarities.”

SWITCHING PATHS – FROM BARRISTER TO PRESENTER

“My grandfather came to the UK in the late 60s to study law. He later qualified as a barrister and was the first Bangladeshi

elected councillor in Tower Hamlets. He’s always inspired me so much – he was my role model and gave me the belief that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Being the eldest grandchild and so close to my grandad, it seemed a natural choice to follow in his footsteps and enter the law. I never doubted that qualifying as a barrister was the path for me. From a young age, I’d always take part in moots and debates – and win every argument in my house! “While I was studying at university, I started a new hobby – hosting. I got my first gig at a Sky television channel where I hosted a live children’s television show every Saturday for seven years. My passion for this hobby grew and grew and I soon realised that deep down it was what I’d always wanted to do. In 2012, I hosted the first ever international reality TV show in Bangladesh and doors started opening for me to pursue my passion full-time. By the time I got back to Essex, I’d landed myself a radio show on BBC Asian Network every Sunday.”

BECOMING A MUM – IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC “First off, I should say that being a mum is not as glamorous as it may look on the A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

SHE STARTED OUT IN LAW

ALI IS A POPULAR VOICE ON THE RADIO

‘Gram! It’s hard work – you never stop being a mum. Every moment of every day, I’m thinking about my daughter. My mind is full of love for her, worry for her, mum tasks that I need to complete and a million other things besides. “Becoming a mother was a reality check for me. Having a Covid baby made the start of motherhood difficult. I was very isolated and had no family support at the time due to lockdown. However, looking back now it’s definitely made me a stronger person and a more hands-on mum. In such a short space of time my priorities have definitely changed; I always happily put my daughter first. She comes before any work or project. “Despite that I think it’s fair to say I’ve worked the hardest and had more

“I wanted to use my platform to become a voice for the voiceless” SHE LOVES THE HISTORY FOUND IN ESSEX

opportunities in the past two years than I ever had before, and I have to work hard to find the right balance. Being a working mum in my industry can be challenging at times. You risk being discriminated against, because people recognise that you have other priorities and often project onto you what that means in terms of your availability or commitment. I need to remind people constantly that I’m still the same person with the same personality and work ethic. I just have more life experience now.”

OVERCOMING TRAUMA – FINDING UNKNOWN INNER STRENGTH

“In my previous marriage, I was the victim of abuse, a subject which remains largely taboo in South-Asian communities. I’m not the only one who’s suffered, so I wanted to use my platform to become a voice for the voiceless. I’m now an ambassador for an amazing charity called Nour DV. This charity speaks up for those who are unable to stand up against domestic violence and supports the victims of such violence through education and by raising awareness. “Even now, I still have to consciously work on myself and every day I learn something new about myself and my emotions. Importantly, through my personal experience I discovered that there are many forms of abuse, some visible, some invisible. I urge everyone to look out for the tell-tale signs of domestic abuse and be patient and supportive to anyone who is suffering this kind of assault, whether it be mental or physical. Let them know there

are many charities out there to help them. No-one should have to suffer in silence. “I can also finally say that I’m writing a book where for the first time ever I’ll be talking about how I managed to escape my abusive relationship and what I learnt as a woman going through a complicated divorce in the 21st century. I’ll be talking about the taboos of divorce in the Asian community and the battles I had to fight just to get my rights through the Shariah Council (Muslim Law Council) when I applied for a khula (when a wife initiates divorce proceedings under Muslim Law) and lots more.”

THE FUTURE – COMING SOON FROM NADIA ALI

“I’ve been very busy lately working on a few projects and doing extra shows on the BBC Asian Network. I hosted most Fridays of the Breakfast Show during the pandemic, which gave me the boost I needed to start my own podcast about motherhood and the challenges we face. I’ve also started my own coaching and mentoring scheme on leadership, presenting and public speaking. “I hope to carry on with television and radio work in the future, maybe even diversifying into documentaries. I’d love to tell the story of my grandfather and his peers when they first came to the UK. Oh, and most importantly – I want to be a super mum!” Katie Traxton is the founder Good Vibes Only Talent. n Absolutely Essex’s very short lifespan so far, we have ventured to Channels Estate twice – first to highlight it as a destination venue, second to meet head chef Dan Pitts – but even after two features we had barely scratched the surface of what this Chelmsford gem offers. As Katie Squire, Channels’ general manager, says, there’s a lot to cover. “We have continually evolved over nearly 50 years. Times change and you have to move with them if you want to stay successful.” Originally farmland, the Channels Estate was purchased by the Stubbings family and opened in 1974 as a ninehole golf course. Four generations on and it’s still a family-run business with a lot more on its plate. “We now have our beautiful new look bar and IT’S THE PERFECT WEDDING VENUE

THE FOOD OFFERING IS EXEMPLARY

brasserie, our stunning 17th century Essex barn for weddings and events, and the gorgeous Channels Hotel,” Squire says. “We are now at the heart of the new Channels community that has been created around us.” The food, as already mentioned, is rightly gaining much attention. “Dan’s passion for food is extraordinary,” enthuses Zoe Strong, Channels’ restaurant manager. “Our waiting staff learn so much from each menu launch and he keeps us on our toes with the most amazing ingredients, with many grown in our own vegetable garden. I believe we have a very unique restaurant with a passion for giving our guests a dining experience full of friendly staff along with a menu that can be enjoyed by all.” You can read more about their new autumn menu on page 25, and the food plays a key role in making Channels Estate a one-stop-shop for any kind of event. With weddings in particular in vogue once again thanks to the easing of Covid restrictions, it’s been great to see their Essex barn back in use. “It was a very difficult year last year,” Squire says on 2020. “Having to constantly postpone weddings was heart-breaking for couples, but at last we are back in full swing and have a lot to catch up on. The Essex barn has its own exclusive beautifully large garden, and you can go all out on decorating as you like, or keep it simple as the barn always looks stunning.” The on-site hotel also has a new treat in store. “The hotel has opened The Retreat,” Squire explains, “which includes your own private kitchen, salon, living space, hot tub and three

double bedrooms. The perfect way to start your wedding!” The hotel rooms, too, all have a story to tell, being designed individually. “That’s because Channels is unique,” Squire says on the reasoning behind that. “That follows through in everything we do. The rooms all have an individual design, offering every customer a slightly different experience, which is something to talk about over breakfast in the morning with other guests.” Weddings aside, the team at Channels are clearly making up for lost time. “We have plenty of social events taking place in the brasserie, so there is always something to come to Channels for,” Squire says. “With Christmas just around the corner, the Channels Estate will be getting ready for our ever-popular Breakfast with Santa, and this year we are also doing Lunches with Santa.” You can see why Santa himself is so portly. Channels has come far since the days of digging the land for sand and gravel. It looks to be an exciting end to 2021, but for all the changes over the years, Squire points out the one thing that will always remain resolutely the same. “It’s the family feel you get when you visit,” she says. “Everyone is made to feel welcome and as though you are part of the family. Our staff are so welcoming and many have worked for the company for years, which says a lot in itself.” C H A N N E L S E STAT E Pratts Farm Lane East, Chelmsford, CM3 3PT 01245 440005 channelsestate.co.uk

Mahi Pinot Noir 2018, Marlborough  £26 A full and rich bouquet, this wine is mouth filling, ripe and supple with good complexity. Dark cherries and plums combine with soft tannins to give a wellrounded finish. This Pinot Noir is a quintessential Kiwi Pinot style from a very good Marlborough vintage. One to savour.

Blank Canvas ` Pinot Noir 2017, Escaroth Marlborough  £33 A heady fragrance of peony and violets, red cherry and pomegranate, overlaid with a smoky, earthy savouriness. The character reflects the perfume and delicacy of the vintage, whilst retaining its innate muscular tannin structure that ensures it will age very well. Pinot Noir fans will not be disappointed.

Schubert ‘Block B’ Pinot Noir, Wairarapa, 2017  £43 Intense aromas of blackcurrant and cherry along with smoke and tobacco notes. Aged in both old and new French oak barriques for 16 months, the wine is full bodied with rich and elegant textures. The mid-palate is well supported by the tannins and refreshing acidity.

Il Vino is the premier independent wine merchant in West Essex, offering a selection of outstanding wines, champagnes and cognacs and cigars from around the world. Il Vino will also soon be offering customers private tasting events at the shop in Buckhurst Hill.

I

t’s not quite the Roaring Twenties, but since lockdown restrictions were eased, you do get the sense that the Essex public are determined to make up for lost time – and last Christmas was arguably the biggest loss for many. “I think everyone is looking forward to a more ‘normal’ festive period,” agrees Oliver Brown, general manager of Wivenhoe House Hotel in Colchester. “Every Christmas at Wivenhoe House is special, but of course this year will be amazing as everyone will hopefully be able to relax and enjoy themselves without any worry.” It’s why we are talking about the festivities in October, early even for the publishing world. Venues all across Essex are gearing up for what is hoped to be a bumper season to make up for lost time. “Wivenhoe House always holds special events throughout the season,” Brown says. “There is nothing like walking into reception and seeing the twinkling, 14ft Christmas tree that we have every year. The house is always decorated so beautifully and you instantly feel festive as soon as you step through the doors.”

The dining options are always special – as you can read more about to the right – and Brown explains that they have their Christmas Party Nights already available to book, tickets are on sale for the Christmas Shopping Experience and residential Christmas packages, and the offer extends beyond solely 25 December with their NYE Dinner and Festive Afternoon Teas. There’s also something for all the family. “We have Santa Sunday, Christmas Wreath Making, Panto Comedy Dinner, and Scrooge & Scratchitt Festive Tea and Tales,” Brown adds, really helping to get us into the festive spirit. Last Christmas was memorable for all the wrong reasons, but the likes of Wivenhoe House are determined to flip the mood in 2021. It’s time to party like it’s 1999 (as Prince once famously sang). A VERY FESTIVE SETTING

A chef’s Christmas Absolutely Essex chats to Simon Morris, the man running the Wivenhoe House Hotel kitchen What is your idea of the perfect Christmas dinner? My idea of the perfect Christmas dinner would be a turkey roast with all the trimmings… goose fat roast potatoes, slow roasted red cabbage, crispy Yorkshire puddings, pigs in blankets and, of course, Brussel sprouts with pancetta. Do you already have a good idea of what will be on the festive menu at Wivenhoe House this year? Yes, our festive menu for this year includes lots of fresh, locally sourced produce. An example of our menu is for starter pan-seared scallops, pea puree and brown shrimp butter; for mains roast breast of partridge, confit leg & black pudding parcel, pear tatin, duck fat roast potatoes and tarragon jus; and for dessert, dark chocolate and tiramisu parfait, coconut macaron, and white chocolate sauce. Why is using local produce key for you? We always source the freshest and finest local produce. Some of our local suppliers include John Coleman’s, who is a local butcher from Langham, and Anglia produce, who is a local grower of fruit and vegetables. Do you enjoy providing Essex locals with a Christmas Day lunch to remember? We love to prepare, cook and serve our locals with the best Christmas Day lunch possible. We always strive to do our best and love creating unique Christmas menus that have an impact and are more exciting than your ‘traditional’ Christmas dinner. Our aim is to serve up a Christmas meal that our guests remember and want to come back for again next year.

WasabiMarinated Octopus with Okra Serves 2

One of the very first izakaya meals I had in Japan was somewhere in Tokyo, fresh off the boat en route to my tour of duty as an English teacher in Kyushu. My Japanese language ability has never really been more than rudimentary, but at that point I couldn’t even read most menus. So I ordered basically just the few things I could read – one of which was tako-wasa, written in the simpler hiragana orthography, as opposed to kanji, which is highly complex. I had no idea what tako-wasa was, but I correctly guessed it contained octopus (tako) and wasabi. It turned out there wasn’t much more to it than that: just raw octopus, chopped up, then marinated in a generous amount of piquant wasabi and other simple seasonings. It’s pretty hard to source octopus that’s fit to serve raw in the UK, so in this recipe, the octopus is cooked. Raw octopus also has a delightfully slippery-slimy texture, so to replicate that, I include a bit of okra. But if you can get sashimi quality raw octopus, by all means have a go with that. Also, if you can’t get octopus at all, this would be quite good with squid or cuttlefish instead.

INGREDIENTS •2 large or 4 small octopus tentacles, raw or cooked (this is about 300 g (10½ oz) raw or 150–200 g (5–7 oz) cooked) • 4 okra pods • 1 tbsp prepared wasabi • 1 tbsp mirin • 1 tbsp sake •¼ tsp dashi powder (kombu rather than katsuo, if possible) or MSG •½ tsp sugar •2 –3 pinches of salt •½ dried red chilli, finely snipped with scissors, or 1 pinch of red chilli (hot pepper) flakes (optional) •¼ lemon • 1 small handful of chives, chopped

METHOD 1 If your octopus is raw, cook it. Bring a large pan of water to a high simmer, then lower in the octopus and cook for 45 minutes-1 hour until tender but not soft (it should still be slightly chewy). Drain well, then transfer to a roasting tin and leave to air-dry for 10 minutes or so.

2 Mince two of the okra pods and cut the other two into slices about 5 mm (¼ in) thick. Combine the wasabi, mirin, sake, dashi powder, sugar, salt, minced okra and chilli, if using, stirring well to dissolve the sugar. 3 Place the octopus under a very hot grill (broiler) and cook for a few minutes on each side until lightly charred. 4 Dice the octopus into bite-size chunks and mix with the sauce along with the sliced okra. Enjoy straight away or leave in the fridge to marinate for a few hours, up to two days. 5 Serve at room temperature or cold, garnished with the lemon wedge and chopped chives.

SakeSteamed Clams Serves 2

Just like sashimi, clams steamed in sake boast an enormous deliciousness-to-effort ratio; they are so simple they almost don’t require a recipe, and the resulting broth of clam juice and sake is like an umami supernova. But also like sashimi, they rely on good-quality fresh ingredients; in this case, you need to make sure you get good, fresh clams that are free of grit. The only way to really guarantee this is to buy them from a trusted fishmonger. There are only three places where I trust the clams in London. Which is

not to say there aren’t more sources of good clams, it’s just that now that I’ve found three, why would I take a risk on anywhere else? So find yourself a reliable clam guy and hold onto him forever. Nira, or garlic chives, are an excellent alternative to leeks in this recipe, if you can get them. They are sold at any Asian supermarket, usually under their Chinese name, kow choi.

INGREDIENTS •4 00–500 g (14 oz–1 lb 2 oz) clams • 1 00 ml (3½ fl oz/scant ½ cup) sake •½ leek, cut in half and thinly sliced at an angle, or 2 stalks of nira (garlic chives), cut into 2 cm (¾ in) chunks • 1 garlic clove, minced or finely grated •A few sprigs of flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped

METHOD 1 Wash the clams under running water; if you can see or feel any dirt or grit on them, scrub it off. Check that all the clams’ shells are closed and intact; discard any that are broken or that are open and don’t close when you tap them. 2 Place the sake, leeks or nira and garlic in a frying pan (skillet) and bring to the boil, then tip in the clams and place a lid on the pan. 3 Steam for about 4 minutes until all the clams have opened up. Remove the lid then add the parsley and toss it through, cooking for another minute or so. Remove from the heat and discard any clams that have not opened. 4 Serve piping hot, and make sure you have some rice or bread on hand to soak up the juice.

METHOD

ProsciuttoWrapped Crab and avocado sushi roll Serves 2

Top-tier sushi is not really achievable for home cooks, nor even for most professional cooks. But Japan is full of sushi found at more accessible settings and price points, from convenience stores to kaiten-zushi (conveyor belt sushi) shops, as well as home kitchens. This is not the stuff Jiro dreams of – but it’s still pretty tasty. What’s more, I don’t think it can be reasonably be denigrated as ‘inauthentic’. While sushi containing odd ingredients like cream cheese or chilli sauce is generally considered the domain of Americanised Japanese food, in Japan they can get a bit silly with sushi, too. I recall one kaiten-zushi place I went to in Tokyo that served gyoza nigiri – literally an

overturned gyoza on top of a little pillow of rice. Other places serve things like pork cutlet sushi and Korean barbecue sushi. Kura Sushi, one of Japan’s most popular sushi chains, sells sushi topped with cheese tempura. Cheese tempura! Global discourse on sushi is so focused on elite chefs that it’s easy to lose sight of this more plebeian and arguably more fun side of sushi. Are spicy tuna rolls or nigiri topped with tiny cheeseburgers going to win any Michelin stars? Probably not. But they will make loads of people happy. Hopefully this particular ‘B-grade’ maki will as well – basically a California roll, but with salty Italian ham in place of the usual nori.

1 Cook the rice according to the instructions below. While the rice is cooking, stir together the vinegar, sugar and salt until the sugar and salt dissolve. Once the rice is cooked, spread it out in a large bowl or tray and sprinkle over the seasoned vinegar. 2 Mix the vinegar through the rice using a rice paddle or spatula with slicing and turning motions. Let the rice cool to room temperature before making the rolls. 3 If you have a sushi mat, wrap it in cling film (plastic wrap). If not, you don’t need to get one – just wrap some sturdy card or a few sheets of paper together in a few layers of cling film; this will be an adequate makeshift rolling mat. Lay three slices of ham down on the mat or paper, slightly overlapping so they form a solid layer of ham. Wet your hands, then gently spread and press half of the rice out in an even layer on the ham, leaving a gap of about 1 cm (½ in) uncovered along the far edge of the ham (you will use this to seal the roll). 4 Lay the crab meat out in a tidy row along the near side of the ham, about 1 cm (½ in) from the edge, then top with the avocado and lettuce. Use the paper or mat to curl up the edge of the ham, tucking in the fillings with your fingertips and tightening the roll as you go with gentle pressure. 5 When you’ve rolled to the far edge of the ham, squeeze the roll together to seal. Transfer to a cutting board and slice with a sharp, wet knife. Repeat with the remaining ingredients and serve with ponzu or soy sauce and wasabi.

INGREDIENTS • 150 g (5 oz/¾ cups) rice • 1½ tbsp vinegar • ½ tbsp sugar • ¼ tsp salt • 6 slices prosciutto or similar cured ham • 50 g (2 oz) crab meat • ¼ ripe avocado, cut into long slices about 3 mm (⅛ in) thick • 2 leaves little gem lettuce, halved lengthways • Ponzu or wasabi and soy sauce, to serve

he Daygustation shop is filled with a carefully chosen selection of delicious things. As well as wines from small, qualitydriven producers, they also sell a small range of interesting beers, Japanese saké, small-batch spirits and grown up soft drinks. In the chiller you will find stinky cheese from La Fromagerie, charcuterie from Brindisa, Bombetta and Tempus and Torres truffle crisps amongst other deli items. One handy tool they sell is the pictured Coravin Model 3 (£250), which will enable you to pour your favourite wines without pulling the cork, with the Coravin Timeless Three Wine Preservation System. The Three System is the perfect introduction to Daygustation's Timeless Wine Preservation Systems, allowing you to preserve still wines for weeks, months, or even years. Featuring a moulded all-black architecture, two Coravin Pure™ Argon Capsules, two Coravin Screw Caps and a Coravin Aerator, the Three+ contains everything you need to enhance your wine experience. That's not the only innovative thing you can find at Daygustation. Also available are refillable low sulphur wines – the key keg format means the wines have much lower levels of preservatives, which is much better for you and (wonderful news) less likely to give you a bad hangover. They have two whites, two reds and a rosé available in 0.5 or 1 litre refillable bottles – so better for the environment also. The 0.5 litres range from £5.95£8.95 depending on the wine. The Sauvignon (Guy Allion) is considered by many sommeliers to be the best value Sauvignon in the world. daygustationwines.com

CHALLENGE

ACCEPTED We speak with award winning Essex author, entrepreneur, mother and cancer survivor, Donia Youssef, on what it takes to play on your strengths By ELLIE-MAE HAMMOND

N

ever have I felt more in awe of a woman. If Donia Youssef’s CV doesn’t say enough, let her story be the thing that grips you. It was on her 39th birthday when Youssef received the devastating news that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, leaving her with a 40% chance of survival. Today, as an advocate for cancer survivors, she is using her platform to show how it’s possible to take lead of your own life and step up to the challenge, in times where you thought it was impossible. “With only a 40% chance of survival, I faced the prospect of having to tell my young children that I was sick and could possibly die,” Youssef takes up the story.

46

“Instead of shutting down, I decided to play to my strengths. As a result, I began to lead my life with a renewed purpose and inspire others to overcome traumatic news, helping families suffering from serious illnesses.” The year 2013 would mark a large milestone for Youssef, paving the way for a difference to be made. “Back in 2013, I launched Tiny Angels modelling and acting agency, which put me in a position to make an impact,” she explains. “The company went from strength to strength, working with some of the most significant fashion, film, and TV names. Tiny Angels is now a multi-award-winning agency. So many of the new relationships extended to the film, TV and entertainment industry, which sparked my next step in life – selling the agency to pursue my dreams in film and TV. As a result, I have now created

a new and upcoming film production company called Monster Productions.” Alongside being a businesswoman, Youssef is an advocate for cancer survivors, showing how to not let an illness control your life. “Cancer affects so many people, not just the person who gets it; the family, the friends, the colleagues, everyone. Being a cancer survivor, I believe it is important to have the support of likeminded people. I used the platforms to share my journey from the day I got diagnosed so people could see and read exactly what was to be expected. I knew it was beneficial as people reached out to me.” Youssef faced many challenges over the course of her illness, yet she was undeniably determined to use her experience as a way of helping others in similar situations. “This period caused me to reflect. It

was sincere, deep thinking, which led to me choosing life over the struggles. It was very difficult, not only on myself but also on my family and especially my two daughters, but they supported me every step of the way. I did continue to work all throughout my six months of chemotherapy as I found the distraction really helped me, so don’t give up on life and try to keep some normality. I faced many challenges, including intensive care with sepsis, blood clots, trying to be a mum whilst running my company and managing staff. I just refused to be defeated. I would also highlight not to automatically think cancer is a death sentence; yes, your life will change, but with the right mind-set and being amongst uplifting people, it certainly will help. Have the confidence to dream big and don’t allow anyone to stop you in your tracks.”

“Instead of shutting down, I decided to play to my own strengths” During those first few months of her diagnosis, Youssef decided to stick two metaphorical fingers up to cancer. “I put my head down and wanted an outlet for the emotions and thoughts I was having. This led to the first book I wrote called The Monster in Mummy, which is a book on how to effectively communicate a cancer diagnosis to a young child,” she says. “The book became an Amazon bestseller within 48 hours, and then the creation of the monster series happened. In speaking about my struggle and battle with cancer, I came to realise that there were so many people around the world who related to my story. ‘The Monster in Mummy’ book was made to help those who may be in the same situation as myself. It is never nice or easy explaining to your babies that you have something that may limit your time with them; this book gave many families worldwide a way to convey this information in a way that everyone can understand.” With one of her books being adapted for the big screen, I am so excited to see how Youssef continues to use her platform to tell stores that matter, helping those in similar situations, and most importantly creating a voice that is heard globally. A true inspiration. themonster-series.com/about A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Eye on the PRIZE here is a common myth suggesting that natural lashes are damaged by lash extensions. As a trusted beauty expert and lash technician of almost 20 years, I would like to set the record straight. Your natural lashes will not be damaged from lash enhancements! Yay – I hear you say! So, if our lashes aren’t damaged by lash extensions, why do we find them all over the place? Well naturally our lashes fall out - it’s as simple as that! We know the benefits of a healthy diet to give us energy and nourish our bodies; while taking regular exercise will tone and build muscle, which keeps our bodies strong and fit - this will also contribute to strong hair and nails. Just like the hairs on our head, our lashes shed – in fact, each lash has a cycle of roughly six weeks. When a lash sheds, a new one grows in its place, hence the need for maintenance. Every person is different so this could differ slightly from one person to the next. Despite all of this, lash enhancements do need to be applied in the correct way and performed by a trained technician. It may also be the case that if lashes are applied too thick or heavy, if too much adhesive is applied or if incorrect lashes are selected, then our natural lashes can be damaged before the natural shedding occurs. As with any industry, there are providers with improper training. I’d suggest to anyone looking to get lash extensions, to do so with a reputable salon or brand. THE GLAMOUR ROOM

To t he B E A T A man’s heart is his most important tool By KAREN CHESTER

W

hy do men treat their bodies as tools to do a job? Health is not always essential or something they pay much attention to until poor health gets in the way of their ability to go to work, have sex or do something else important to them. While the global impact of COVID-19 is devastating, coronary heart disease is responsible for around 63,000 deaths in the UK each year, an average of 170 people each day, or one death around every eight minutes. Why can’t men make their heart health a top priority? Today, our lives are more sedentary: we sit in the car or on public transport, many of us sit at a desk at work, we come home and sit down for dinner or to watch Netflix. Would you like a healthy heart? Here’s a six-point guide on how to look after yourself:

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY The heart is the most important muscle we have. Exercise is key to keeping muscles strong; after regular physical activity, it becomes more robust and more efficient, which in turn helps by pumping fresh active blood around the body.

A CLEAN, HEALTHY DIET Poor diet is the second highest risk factor for developing heart disease. By focusing on proper nutrition, men can help ensure their heart remains healthy and strong. In most cases, this will include a diet that consists primarily of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains.

BODY WEIGHT Extra body weight places stress on the body’s internal organs and structures, including the heart. You can use the NHS calculator tool to calculate your BMI, and this is key to determining the ideal weight range of an individual based on

High blood pressure is damaging to your blood vessels and is one of the key indicators that an individual may be at risk for heart disease. Blood pressure readings consist of two separate numbers. The top number (systolic) measures the amount of pressure in the arteries as the heart muscle contracts. The bottom number (diastolic) measures pressure in between heartbeats. Ideally, systolic pressure should be below 120 and diastolic below 80.

CHOLESTEROL There are two types of cholesterol. Bad cholesterol (LDL) contributes to heart disease by helping plaque form within artery walls. Good cholesterol (HDL) helps keep this in check by locating LDL and carrying it out of the arteries and back to the liver. However, when there is an imbalance between these two types, LDL cholesterol can remain unchecked and develop fatty build-ups, which can create blockages in your arteries and can increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

STRESS When people are under stress, they tend to make less healthy lifestyle choices. This can mean overeating, making unhealthy diet choices, or becoming less physically active. Finding ways to manage stress effectively is key to maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle. BROOKSIDE AESTHETIC S Karen Chester is the founder of Brookside Aesthetics, who are based in Chelmsford. As their Ilford store is named Best Consumer Electronics Retailer of the Year, the Digwa family reflect on over 30 years of RGB

THE WONDERFUL NEW STORE

R

GB have just celebrated their 30th birthday and have now opened their brand new store in Woodford. The official opening is happening on 23 October and they have exclusively told Absolutely West Essex that bargains on the day will be abundant. The 5,000 sqft store has just recently opened a new home appliance section, which sells everything from toasters to large American fridge freezers and has all manner of large brands available. The section has a huge range on display and ready for demonstration. “We have made sure all home appliances are clearly on display. All our staff have been fully trained on all products, as we feel it is important to make sure

customers receive a proper demonstration, and understand the product they are planning to purchase. As we buy in large quantities we can offer exclusive offers to our customers and not forgetting a great service,” says Director, Dennis Digwa. In 1990, entrepreneur Peter Digwa founded an electrical retailer in a small, 1,500 sqft store in Dagenham. Peter’s love for fine entertainment products led him to establish a company based upon delivering top quality products and providing exceptional service to customers. This quality showed, and soon Peter, joined in the running of RGB by sons Jason and Dennis, relocated to a larger store in Ilford. They soon outgrew this, and extended the shop either side of its high street storefront. Now RGB have the new store in Woodford, with its cutting-edge showroom. The open plan centre was designed specifically to showcase the large range of high-end electrical goods available in the store, which now include a dedicated white goods area. The showroom was designed with the customer’s ease of purchase in mind, with all the main brands such as Samsung, Sony, LG Bosch, Siemens, Neff and Miele. Jason Digwa hinted to us that they will have celebrities on 23 October to officially open the new Woodford store located at 31 The Broadway, Woodford IG8 0HQ. Brothers Jason and Dennis Digwa add: “There are two long-term objectives that shape everything we do at RGB: delivering an outstanding service and delivering exceptional value to all our customers.” rgbdirect.co.uk

MARIE AND CHARLOTTE

started my business over 30 years ago working from the kitchen table at home making soft furnishings for my family and friends. Being married to a farmer meant there was plenty of space to expand the business, which now occupies the old stable block and Dutch barn. Its creation was inspired by a pure love of textiles and design. Prior to the launch I was a nurse and midwife, with a young family, so the need to work flexibly drove me on to turn what was once my hobby into a successful business. At the start, the business was purely fabric-based. I would make all the products myself from curtains and blinds to cushions and upholstery like headboards and chairs. My clients would typically have been residential and local in Essex. Over time the business has grown and changed significantly, from a soft furnishings business into a full-service interior design company. The internet and vast array of styles available has changed the way we work, and the way people shop for their homes, allowing customers to be more ambitious and braver in their choices, and us to be more design focused. Based at home, we are surrounded by family. One of my sons works alongside my husband running the arable farm, whilst my other son utilises the barns for his catering business. Last year, my daughter Charlotte decided the time was right to leave her corporate job in London and join my business. So now we all see each other every day, something that hasn’t been the case since they were children living at home. The majority of our work is residential and varies from helping clients with one room to helping them develop an entire property. Our clients are mainly in the South East of the UK, but we often have projects in Europe and beyond.

The vast array of styles has allowed customers to be more ambitious and braver in their choices What makes us unique is the versatility of our designs. If you look at our Instagram account, you won’t find two projects that look the same, which is quite rare in the interior design world. Tapping into the client’s vision and making their home the best that it can be is key for us – after all, no two homes or clients are ever the same. Having said that, we do love colour and texture and will always encourage our clients to be that little bit braver. Combining beautiful designs and products that maximise the functionality of a space and stand the test of time will always be at the core of our work. We always like to invite clients to the showroom to meet us first and see what we can offer. Ten minutes from Chelmsford in a little village called West Hanningfield we occupy a number of farm buildings all connected via our beautiful showrooms. As you enter our showroom, we have a number of displays showcasing some of our favourite designers together with furniture, accessories and lighting to help bring the

designs to life. The showroom is there to inspire our clients and to show them how to use different products to achieve a certain look. Next to the showroom is our vast library of fabric and wallpapers, with the most recent collections from our designers. This then leads into our offices and through to the workroom, which is where all our fabric-based products are made. With Charlotte now in the business I hope that I can teach her as much as possible and in the not too distant future start to take a step back and enjoy more time with my five grandchildren. The business now consists of so much more than just curtains and blinds and Charlotte will bring her generation of clients through the door and embrace the future trends and needs of families today. It’s an exciting time for sure, with bolder designs and techniques being available and clients being braver and more ambitious than ever. instagram.com/mariestaceyinteriors A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

eal wood flooring is a versatile, timeless option that brings nature indoors while filling the home with warmth and character. Parquet flooring is a particularly popular option that always stands the test of time. Real wood flooring is a classic choice that works across any style of property, from contemporary to traditional and everything in between. It is also a surface that is suitable for virtually any room in the home, from making an entrance in the hallway, to creating a sense of calm and tranquillity in our living spaces and bedrooms. Engineered wood boards, thanks to their construction, are suitable for damp and humid areas and can be installed

on top of underfloor heating, so your real wood floor is as luxuriously warm to walk on as it is beautiful to look at. This is because an engineered board has up to 11 layers of plywood backing, with each layer glued at a 90-degree angle to the adjoining layer. The top layer of a precious hardwood is then glued on top, resulting in a much more stable floor with negligible reduction in the lifespan of the floor and a robust construction that is perfect for any room. This includes most kitchens and bathrooms, where humid conditions won’t cause the wood to warp. Injecting personality and character into large and small spaces alike, the trend for real wood flooring means parquet has never been so popular, bringing a timeless elegance combined with a modern twist to the home. Creating an elegant and

sophisticated look, the combination of colour, wood detailing and pattern makes for a real statement floor. From herringbone and basket weave to brickwork and chevron, the pattern options with parquet are just as diverse as the range of woods available. Go large with 600mm sized blocks for a modern twist on a design classic or opt for an aged design to add extra character with a reclaimed effect. The style of laying pattern chosen will depend on the setting, the size of the parquet, the species and grade of wood and even the finish, but the end result will be the same regardless; a beautiful wood floor that will be a focal point of the room. Once laid, keeping real wood parquet looking as good as new is straightforward. A combination of dry cleaning to remove dirt and dust particles and damp cleaning to protect it against scratches is really all that is needed for a lacquered or oiled floor. For weekly cleaning, a capful of correct concentrate mixed with water and applied with a damp mop will suffice, while to refresh the look and lustre annually, which is important in high traffic areas such as the kitchen, use a concentrated polish, again applied with water and a damp mop. Chosen well and with the right care, a parquet floor will look the part for many years; the most difficult decision will be in choosing which wood type to opt for.

Peter Keane is director of the Natural Wood Floor company. For more details visit naturalwoodfloor.co.uk

Pattern

options include HERRINGBONE

Herringbone is a classic laying pattern for parquet, with the blocks laid so they inter-lock in a diagonal pattern. Most commonly, the points of a herringbone pattern floor are laid parallel to a room’s longest wall, or towards the window. Traditional in style, this pattern is suited to wood with an aged look, so that it resembles reclaimed wood. To give the look a modern twist there is no reason why different species of wood or different finishes can’t be combined, for a really striking impression.

BASKET WEAVE

Equally as traditional is basket weave parquet, which can be laid in several different styles. Each pattern has its own unique style and is ultimately down to individual preference and the size of the blocks being used.

BRICKWORK

For something a little more contemporary brickwork and ladder patterned parquet look particularly striking when chosen for long, narrow spaces such as entrance hallways.

CHEVRON

A timeless classic that never goes out of fashion, chevron parquet really looks the part when laid over large spaces. Choose individual chevron blocks of standard sizes to lay one by one, or engineered chevron boards glued together in a row on a board for easier fitting.

BOHO

DESIGN Get the look: how to create a Bloomsbury-inspired interior By KIT KEMP

I

t’s no secret that I have long been inspired by the work and creativity of the Bloomsbury Group, a set of artists and intellectuals including Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant who lived and worked in Bloomsbury during the early 20th century. The group believed in creativity, innovation and beauty, but it is their sense of fun and freedom that I am most drawn to. Charlotte Street Hotel sits in the heart of Bloomsbury and the interiors for the hotel make specific reference to the Bloomsbury Group. There is much to learn from this fascinating group of artists – here are some ideas for how to create a Bloomsbury interior of your own. When creating your own Bloomsburyinspired interior, there is no better way to seek inspiration than by visiting the Charleston farmhouse near Lewes, in East Sussex, where the group’s interior style can be most distinctly seen. Vanessa Bell, with artists Duncan Grant and Roger Fry, wanted art to be democratic and thought that furniture, ceramics and textiles should be given as much attention as fine art. So

here they filled the home they shared with beautiful things and painted every surface. Another place from which to draw Bloomsbury inspiration is Monk’s House, also in East Sussex, where the spirit of not only Virginia Woolf, who lived here with her husband Leonard, but also of the Bloomsbury Group and the many artists, writers and thinkers who visited, fills the rooms. The Bloomsbury Group truly loved colour. Their interiors and paintings were a riot of dusky blues, artichoke greens, damask rose, burnt orange and aubergine. It is a totally unique colour palette that can be both moody and uplifting. Annie Sloan, the chalk paint specialist, has collaborated with the Charleston Trust to create a unique range of paint colours inspired by these distinctive hues. In the Drawing Room and Library at Charlotte Street Hotel, the curtains have been made up in Duncan Grant’s ‘Queen Mary’ fabric, which was intended for use in the First Class Lounge aboard the RMS Queen Mary ocean liner in 1935. This is available from Charleston’s shop. Sydney-based fabric house EDIT offers a A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

selection of incredibly colourful and vibrant fabrics which take the Bloomsbury aesthetic into the 21st century. I have used EDIT’s ‘Harlequin’ fabric on occasional chairs at Charlotte Street Hotel in both the Library, positioned below a painting by Roger Fry, and the Drawing Room. I have also used EDIT’s ‘Vanessa Bloom’ – named after Vanessa Bell – on a comfortable fireside armchair in the Drawing Room. This fabric evokes the spirit of the Bloomsbury Group with its rich, painterly forest green, pink and blue florals. A great way to update a room is to paint the furniture in it. The Bloomsbury Group loved breathing new, colourful and witty life into everyday items by painting them with decorative motifs and geometric patterns. At Charlotte Street Hotel, there is a small desk that was hand-painted by The Omega Workshop, over which hang paintings by Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell. The Omega Workshop was founded by Roger Fry in Bloomsbury’s Fitzroy Square in 1913, with the aim of selling furniture, fabrics

“A great way to update a room is to paint the furniture in it” and household accessories designed and made by the Bloomsbury Group’s unconventional group of artists. They had an eclectic set of influences, where Cubist design would sit next to Italian frescoes and neoclassical pieces rest against English Arts & Crafts designs. In the same way, be inspired in your own home by mixing different styles and eras, displaying things you find both useful and beautiful, but most importantly things that you really love. In the Library at Charlotte Street Hotel, Vanessa Bell’s painted panels set the Bloomsbury mood, teamed here with a wing chair covered in a modern Bloomsbury-inspired fabric.

a t i o n a l Tr u s t Papers II is an eclectic collection of contemporary wallpaper designs based on original patterns from the National Trust’s historic houses. The collection comprises 42 colourways across seven designs; it is a celebration of enduring design, with the origins of these contemporary wallpapers spanning over 400 years of historic decoration. Each wallpaper in the collection has been redrawn and recoloured, respectfully acknowledging the traditional methods and materials from which they were originally crafted. Design elements are taken from Georgian and Victorian block-printed papers and also from older, decorative objects including a leather wall-hanging and a 15th century tapestry. The contemporary

interpretation of each design makes this a timeless collection of papers for homes of all architectural styles. Patterns include the delightful, trailing Massingberd Blossom from Gunby Hall in Lincolnshire, the playful and charming Burges Snail from Knightshayes Court, authentic late Georgian Beech Nut, uncovered at Oxburgh Hall in Norfolk, Mandalay, a tree of life design taken from a leather wall hanging purchased by Rudyard Kipling, scrolling damask design Tulip, small-scale print Moy and delicate botanical Millefleur, inspired by a lovingly conserved tapestry at Montacute House. Little Greene’s Ruth Mottershead explains:“We are immensely privileged to have access to the National Trust’s incredible portfolio of properties that are so beautifully looked after and treasured by the Trust on behalf of the nation. With the National Trust properties each containing such diverse decoration, creating a

collection that encompasses the wideranging styles found in these historically significant interiors is a real joy.” Clare Brown of the National Trust is appreciative of Little Greene’s sensitivity. “Little Greene really understands and respects the decorative arts and designs that can be found within the National Trust’s historic houses. Seeing how the places in our care continue to inspire not just visitors, but contemporary interior design as well, is so thrilling. Not only will these beautiful designs be a great addition to any home, but the sale of every roll will help support our work.” A contribution from the sale of every roll of Little Greene wallpaper will be made in support of the National Trust’s conservation work, to ensure the nation’s historic houses, gardens and open spaces can be enjoyed for generations to come. littlegreene.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Are you mad about your house? Kate Watson-Smyth has launched a course in making your space work for you Words P E N D L E H A R T E

alking into Kate WatsonSmyth’s north London house, I’m immediately struck by how familiar it looks. Not because I’ve been here before, but because – along with more than a quarter of a million other followers – I’m used to seeing bits of it on Instagram. This much-photographed house is a living example of how to achieve successful design, and now Watson-Smyth, a journalist and blogger who has become a serious design mover, is launching an online course to help the rest of us realise our interiors dreams. As the woman behind the UK’s number one interiors blog, Mad About The House, she’s used to being asked for advice and it’s her honest and relatable tone – as well as her great eye – that makes her such an authority. The big thing about Kate is that she’s not snooty or dogmatic, and her mission is to demystify the process of decorating your house the way you want it. And because deciding on the way you want it is almost half the battle, that’s what she focuses on with this course, which is mostly about finding your own interior design style. Note ‘your own’ – she’s not advocating recreating her own style (though I’d wager that many of her followers are quite

If there’s a dirty great white radiator in the middle of it, what are you thinking? It is not a feature keen to do exactly that) because her core belief is that living somewhere you love has an enormously positive impact on your overall happiness and wellbeing. But what really makes her so engaging is her warmth and humour. You imagine that even shopping for radiator valves could be fun with her. Sitting in her kitchen (well-designed with a practical layout, intriguingly muted paint colours and fabulous storage, naturally) over coffee, not only do I learn a lot about decorating houses, but I’m also enjoying being entertained. The course launch’s timing really couldn’t be better, with the idea of wellbeing at home becoming more relevant than ever over the past 18 months. “I think a lot of people have now realised the link between your surroundings and your mental health,” Watson-Smyth tells me. “In the past, a lot of people would move into a house, slap a colour on the wall, think ‘that’s quite nice’, and then go to work and not see it again in daylight until they were on holiday. Being forced to spend time indoors has led people to think,

84

‘well actually I hate this room’ and then start to analyse why they hate it. So that’s led to an interest in working out what colours you like and what you use your rooms for. And that’s where my courses and books come in.” For Watson-Smyth, the starting point is to ask six basic questions, just as she was taught as a trainee journalist. It’s all about the who, what, why, when, where and how. “It’s about knowing what questions to ask. It’s fine if you like teal blue (though that’s not a colour for me) but you can’t look at a colour in isolation and think, ‘I love it; I’m going to paint it all over my living room’. You have to think, how does that colour make you feel? And if it makes you feel energised, buzzy and ready to start the day, then maybe that’s not the colour for the bedroom. Maybe it’s more the colour for the kitchen. It’s about choosing the colours that you love and then matching the mood of them to the room you need.” And it’s not just colours – it’s important to consider carefully what the purpose of each room actually is. This is something that people often get

wrong, she says. “They don’t think who’s using a room, so it ends up not fit for purpose. Typically, someone might put a beautiful buttoned upright sofa in the sitting room, that nobody wants to sit on because it’s uncomfortable. Then they add an extension on the back of the house and put a squashy sofa in the kitchen, with a telly in there – and from then on nobody ever uses the sitting room again. You have to know what, why and who.” The course is essentially five hours of video material broken down into manageable 15 minute lessons explaining where to start and all the questions you should ask. “It’s not about being didactic and saying this is how it’s done, it’s saying, if you follow this process you will know how you want to do it – you’ll have learnt how to do it yourself,” says Watson-Smyth. It’s illustrated with a walk-through of her own very lovely and well-considered house (pictured here) with honest reference to mistakes she has made and things she has changed or would do differently. Watson-Smyth and her husband moved into the house more than ten years ago, with their two small sons (now teenagers) and they converted it from two flats back A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

into a single dwelling, and learnt a lot along the way. Is it finished? A house is never really finished, of course, but “all the rooms are in the right places now.” By this she means the kitchen and bathrooms. “If you get your plumbing rooms in the right place then your approach to bedrooms can be fairly fluid,” she says. The family have all swapped bedrooms a lot as their needs have changed, which is something that many of us don’t think about doing, she points out. “Parents of small children tend to take the master bedroom, because it’s called ‘the master bedroom’. For us, the boys shared the master bedroom when they were little because they had the biggest toys and they could fit them all in there. As they got older, the toys got smaller and they moved into their own rooms. Sometimes the solution is just to move the rooms around.” Now she and her husband do have the master bedroom, where they have devised an ingenious half-wall to partition a dressing room area. For bedrooms, one piece of advice she has is to look at hotels. “They’re often ahead of the curve – look at the industrial style a few years ago, when every pizza joint in town had distressed furniture and tin tile ceilings. Hotels have to get a lot of functions into a small space: a desk, a chair, a place to watch tv, some sort of bathroom, a double bed, everything has to be highly functional in a small space. If you want to build an en suite you can, for example, make the wall ¾ height and put a pane of glass on top so you are borrowing light – hotels do that a lot and there’s no reason why you can’t in your own home.” The major game-changer for interiors in the past decade or so has been Instagram, which Watson-Smyth loves. “Instagram has been hugely important for interiors, and democratised it. Magazines remain influential and

inspirational, but only certain types of houses get featured, while Instagram has allowed everybody to put their houses up. If you live in a one-bedroom flat you’ll be able to find inspiration on Instagram from someone who’s done their one-bed flat beautifully. Magazines are frustrating – they might credit everything except, say, the coffee table – and to find out about it all you can really do is to write to the editor, but they never reply, while on Instagram you can interact. People are doing whole tutorials on how to paint your UPVC windows and everything. It’s made us all more design literate. If you wanted to see what someone’s house

I’m a huge fan of sliding doors. I can’t believe that nobody talks about doors looked like in Japan 30 years ago, you’d have had to go to Tokyo, but now you can see how people live and use space instantly.” There’s a chapter in the course on navigating social media, because it’s easy to become overwhelmed with so much inspiration out there. If you have 300 pins on your kitchen board, you’re not going to know what to do. I have to ask about her bugbears. What mistakes are we all making? Of course there are several. “Hanging pictures too high is one. And the rug island with the coffee table boat – I can’t bear that. Another thing: you have got to paint your radiators to match your walls. I’m not even going to discuss it. If you have gone to all the bother of testing 47 different paints to find the right colour and there’s a dirty great white radiator in the middle of it, then what are you thinking? It is not a feature.” And then there are doors. Another chapter of the course is dedicated to doors, which makes total sense when she talks me through all the different ones in her house. “The standard door can take up a lot of space,” she explains. So on the landing there is one that’s cut in half and folds backwards to save space, while the door to her en suite is cut in half and hinged on either side, again saving space. “Plus I’m a huge fan of sliding doors. I can’t believe that nobody talks about doors.” Another interesting element of the course focuses on relationships. Or, more accurately, on persuading one’s husband to agree to things like pink walls and gold grout. Not that Watson-Smyth managed to get gold grout past her own husband. “We have developed something over the years called the marital veto. It’s only been used about three times – last time was when we were doing the loft six years ago and I wanted gold grout in the bathroom. He just said no. I cried on Instagram for a bit but now I hate to think that he might have been right.” Still, there’s bound to be an Instagram tutorial for painting your grout, and as she keeps saying, you can change the colours of everything as long as you get the layout right. And then you could be mad about your house too. @mad_about_the_house Kate Watson-Smyth’s course, How To Be Mad About Your House, costs £127 at createacademy.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

idden away in Leeds is an unexpected little c om mu n it y c a l l e d Secret Garden, where homes are built with sustainability in mind. Secret Garden, Leeds is a climate innovation district, created specifically to combat climate change. Castrads radiators were chosen for one of the homes because they’re compatible with sustainable heating, such as air and ground source heat pumps. Castrads radiators are a sustainable heating option with a timeless aesthetic. Castrads is committed to working against inbuilt obsolescence, with radiators that are built to last centuries. Castrads is the first radiator company working towards using exclusively recycled iron and mycelium packaging.

Castrads is committed to working against inbuilt obsolescence Castrads provides innovative technology, like their thermostatic control valves, that encourage people to heat their homes efficiently, reducing energy use and wasted heat. This fully mechanical valve allows you to set the ambient temperature in the room. When the room reaches the desired temperature, the valve closes and the radiator stops heating. The room then cools, the valve opens and the radiator begins to heat again. While cast iron radiators look at home in period properties, Castrads’ wide range of colours and styles fit seamlessly into more contemporary homes as well. Castrads offers 24 exclusive finishes in their Bare Metal and Signature ranges as well as any colour from Farrow & Ball, Little Greene or Benjamin Moore, giving you over 500 colour options. Castrads’ Mercury line was created by their in-house design engineers. With 15 height and depth variations, it is the most comprehensive radiator range

ever created. With so many size options, the Mercury is perfect for a cohesive look throughout your whole house. Whether you’re looking for something tall and narrow in a hallway or short and wide enough to double as a window seat, the Mercury is the ideal choice. Castrads offers virtual and on-site consultations, heat loss calculations, design suggestions with colour samples, and expert advice every step of the way. he idyllic Portuguese island of Madeira is part of an archipelago in the Atlantic. Although just a four-hour flight from the UK, it promises pleasant weather year round and offers spectacular landscapes, sparkling azure seascapes and an inspiring food culture. It’s a diversely remarkable and bountiful island with officially 24 different microclimates, which means there always seems to be a place where the sun is shining. This is our kind of island. And the magnificent five-star Savoy Palace Hotel is our kind of hotel and a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. It sits imposingly overlooking the sparkling Atlantic across the pool’s inviting blueness. Funchal’s eclectic architecture climbs the hill behind – fabulous views wherever you look.

“24 DIFFERENT MICROCLIMATES, MEANS THERE ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE A PLACE WHERE THE SUN IS SHINING"

From the moment we stepped into the glistening marble lobby with its mesmerising chandelier and flower displays, we knew we were living a truly palatial lifestyle. And this was solidly reinforced when we saw our suite at the top of the hotel. The huge space was dominated by a giant bed with the plumpest of pillows and softest of linen. We enjoyed the Savoy Premium Experience with its fabulous extras. In-room treats appeared like magic – the famous pastel de nata Portuguese tarts, macarons, exotic fruit and bottles of heady Madeiran wine. We had exclusive access to the hotel’s rooftop with its infinity pools, bar, mega comfy loungers – and even more breathtaking views. The stunning Laurea Spa, a 3,100 squaremetre luxurious destination spa, is inspired by Madeira’s beautiful Laurissilva Forest. There’s a stunning (and enormous) heated indoor pool with invigorating waterfalls, Turkish baths, Himalayan salt room, sauna and jacuzzi and expansive relaxation areas for de-stressing. We also treated ourselves to superb muscle-relaxing massages. When it comes to eating, there’s a world of wonder to discover at Savoy Palace. “AN EXCEPTIONAL CULINARY EXPERIENCE IN THE MOST SPECTACULAR OF SETTINGS WITH PANORAMIC SEA AND MOUNTAIN VIEWS” throw away. We tasted inventive fish dishes including local favourites – scabbard, tuna and octopus – and the tastiest of salads. At Jacaranda on high we savoured a fabulous Nikkei experience with the freshest sushi and sashimi as well as other Japanese delicacies. But best of all was the creative and mouthwatering tasting menu with wine pairings at Galaxia Skyfood. The restaurant offers an exceptional culinary experience in the most spectacular of settings with panoramic sea and mountain views. There’s also plenty to discover outside the hotel. We explored the volcanic

island’s dramatic mountainscapes by jeep, taking the road less traveled and eating breakfast at a secluded picnic spot after some peace-inducing yoga. We ambled along the unique lavadas (the network of mini-canals throughout the island that are used for irrigation), taking in stunning views and getting a taste of local life. And of course we took to the seas to commune with the schools of Atlantic spotted dolphins and took in the staggering view from the vertico-inducing glass platform of Cabo Giro – the highest sea cliff in the world. There’s also the quaint Old Town (Zona Velha) with its poncha bars, restaurants and traditional shops as well as the colourful Mercado dos Lavradores. This foodie heaven sells myriad local flowers, vegetables and fruit (including more types of passion fruit than I knew existed). It’s also a great spot to pick up a souvenir. Because you’re definitely going to want to take a little bit of Madeira home with you.

Testing for Travel This was was my first post-Covid trip, which means tests! We went with Qured, who provide Covid-19 testing delivered to your door. Simply order the test pre-trip and it arrives at your home. Once you do your PCR test yourself at home, it needs to be posted off in your nearest priority postbox (ours happened to be opposite our house, luckily). You activate your test when you take it and when you receive your results, upload them to the Qured site to get your Fit to Fly certificate. You will need to show this upon arrival at the airport when checking in. Note that some countries don’t require a Fit to Fly certificate if you have had both double vaccinations. Your also need to do a lateral flow test prior to returning to the UK, which will also be sent to your home address so don’t forget to take it with you. And finally, there’s the day two test, two days after arriving home – again it is sent to your home and you post it off for your result. All details are at qured.com.

“It allows for parents to spend precious time with their children while learning”

S M A L L T A L K Through a range of innovative programmes, Pepe and Tete brings the Spanish language to life

P

epe and Tete is a Spanish language experience business that offers learning for all ages and levels. The journey to create Pepe and Tete started in Pilar de la Horadada, Spain where their founder is from and worked as a tennis coach for nine years. This period strengthened her passion for all sports as well as heavily influencing Pepe and Tete’s approach to learning. The approach is founded on two principles; first is that learning is all about curiosity and they take every day as an opportunity to discover something new. Second is that conversation is the best way to learn a language. So, whether it’s practicing with native speakers or roleplays, their tutors place strong emphasis on social skills as a way of mastering a language across all ages and levels. Specifically, for children, they have developed a learning model that combines interactive learning and real-life interactions. They use Pepito, a fun and

engaging character that brings to life various aspects of Spanish culture such as family, food and hobbies. An example is this year, for children aged 5-10, they ran a series of art camps that explored famous Spanish artists such as Picasso, Miró and Gaudi. For adults, they have developed a dedicated one-year programme called Spanish Año. The programme is based on an English family looking to relocate to Spain and thus puts strong emphasis on conversation and practice as a way of mastering the language. They have also SANDRA AVILES, THE FOUNDER OF PEPE AND TETE

created a unique programme that allows for parents to spend precious time with their children while learning together. They recognize that time and flexibility are a challenge especially for families or professionals. Therefore, as online learning becomes the norm, they are constantly looking at ways to innovate new learning options such as maternity and sabbatical programmes, both centered around the student’s availability. Learning a language does not stop at just being able to speak and listen, but also includes cultural immersion, meeting new people and of course sampling the food. Their full immersions programmes offer the perfect setting to practice and experience the Mediterranean lifestyle in the south of Spain. So, no matter your learning needs, they would be delighted to bring Spain to you via a journey of fun, new friendships and adventure. If you would like to find out more about the programmes, please get in touch on team@pepeandtete.com. pepeandtete.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

andy beaches, cherry blossoms and timeless spots inspired BabyBjörn to create a new range of colours for the iconic baby carrier. The perfect pink, the anything-butboring grey beige, and leopard print launched last month and the multi award-winning Baby Carrier Mini, Baby Carrier Move and Baby Carrier One Air are now available in new colours including the highly coveted and celebrity favourite anthracite leopard print. Baby Carrier Mini is a small, easy-to-use baby carrier that mum or dad can quickly

“The carrier can

be used in four different positions as your baby grows” put on for frequent short babywearing sessions. It’s perfect for the first months when the baby needs a lot of closeness around the clock. It’s easy to unfasten the entire front section of the baby carrier to lift out a sleeping baby. The soft fabrics gently hug the baby’s back, legs and hips, and provide good support. Through the fabric, a parent can check the baby’s position and the natural C curve of the baby’s back with their hands. Designed to fit the needs of a newborn baby up to 15 months, the simple design of the Baby Carrier Move makes it easy to put on, even in the middle of the night, and the luxurious, tactile fabrics are gentle on your newborn’s delicate skin. You can feel your baby is being carried in a natural position, with their back in a gentle c-curve. From 12 months, the carrier can also be used outward facing so you and your baby can explore the world together. The Baby Carrier One Air offers hours of comfy carrying from newborn all the way up to three years, the carrier can be used in four different positions to grow as your baby does, for perfect carrying ergonomics, use either parent facing, outward facing or for back carrying. The cool air mesh fabric makes sure neither parent or baby gets too hot too. babybjorn.co.uk

“Many people think they can be moved in by the 25th, but fail to think about the practicalities”

START PREPARING NOW TO MOVE INTO YOUR NEW HOME BY CHRISTMAS

COSY FOR

CHRISTMAS Take the stress out of a winter move by following some simple tips By ELIZABETH HENDRY

112

W

ith fresh autumnal leaves falling and a bite of crisp cold in the air, many people are looking forward to getting cosy for the winter season ahead in a new home. If you’re one of them, now is the time to get the ball rolling so you can be moved into your new home by Christmas. “By instructing a solicitor early on and allowing as much time as possible for the move, you’ll be in a great position to be settled in by the time the tree is up,” says Mia Mackenzie, specialist conveyancer at Attwells Solicitors in Colchester. One of the easiest ways to make a smooth and cost-effective move is to take advantage of a conveyancing package like Attwells’ Move Ready service, which gets much of the paperwork out of the

way from the get-go to ensure a faster move. This service is free of charge if you instruct and go to market with your estate agent simultaneously. The lead-up to the festive season can be a hectic time in the property market, so it’s important to have some expert advice and help. Attwells have summarised a few important things everyone wanting to move should do to give themselves the best chance of moving by Christmas. The first thing you should do is instruct a solicitor. In doing this first, you are ensuring that you can take control of the situation. Many people think that they can easily be moved in by the 25th, but fail to think about the practicalities of the situation. Make it clear to everyone involved in the process – from your estate agent to solicitor – that you intend to be moved in before Christmas. By communicating your desire to do this early, you will have a better chance of the move going smoothly. It will make sure everyone is working on a similar timescale and should increase the chances of you moving by your desired date. Good communication throughout the process with your estate agent as well as solicitor is vital as it means that no important documents will be missed out, which could delay the process. Following instructing your solicitor, you should get your property ready for viewings. A deep clean or a touch of fresh paint can really make you stand out from the crowd. While doing this is beneficial in trying to sell your house, it can also benefit you by getting your possessions organised and will make it easier for you later down the line when you want to move and pack. You should order your property searches as soon as possible too. In addition to searches, you’ll also need to get surveys done. Surveys are a vital part of moving house: they check for any problems existing now or likely to arise in the future, which could make it hard to live in your new house or to sell it on in the future. After this you will want to check availability with a removal company and, if possible, book your moving date with them. AT T W E L L S Christmas is one of the busiest times of year for moving house and the more organised you are, the better. For expert advice, contact Attwells Solicitors on 01206 766 333 for a conveyancing quote or visit attwells.com
