“This generation challenged the British art world”

O

ne of the leading figures of her generation, Sarah Lucas is internationally celebrated for her bold and irreverent work, often exploring the human body, mortality, and very British experiences of sex, class and gender. A new exhibition at Tate Modern brings together more than 75 works spanning four decades, from breakthrough early sculptures and photographs to brand new works being shown for the first time. Sarah Lucas rose to prominence among the Young British Artists of the early 1990s. She attended Goldsmiths College from 1984-87 and showed her work in Freeze, the legendary exhibition curated by Damien Hirst in 1988. Exhibiting together and sharing a playful and daring approach to materials and images, this generation challenged the British

art world and made an indelible impact on the cultural landscape. Tate Britain’s exhibition will begin with some of Lucas’s early works from this era, including those made from tabloid newspaper spreads like Sod You Gits 1990 and Fat, Forty and Flab-ulous 1990. These introduce the artist’s use of innuendo and word-play, as well as her interest in feminist discourse and representations of the female body. Her early career will also be reconsidered as part of a wider story, from her childhood to her life today, highlighting her ongoing examination of social conditions beyond the confines of the art world. Lucas’ use of chairs, and her evocation of seated figures, will have a central role in the exhibition. Lucas explains: “I decided to hang the exhibition mainly on chairs. Much

in the same way that I hang sculptures onto chairs”. Across her career, she has often taken domestic furniture and imbued it with a humorous and unnerving honesty about sex and desire. Tate brings together a selection of such sculptures from the 1990s, ranging from early examples like The Old Couple 1992 – made from two chairs, a wax penis and a set of false teeth – through to later sculptures like Hysterical Attack (both Eyes and Mouths) both 1999, which formed part of an intervention at the Freud Museum in 2000. Also featured are examples of Lucas’s signature soft sculptures made from stuffed tights, including Mumum 2012 and Bunny 1997, which was shown in the Royal

Academy of Art’s landmark 1997 exhibition ‘Sensation’. The exhibition goes on to explore the growing range of materials used in Lucas’s sculpture, including bronze, resin and concrete. This change in materiality was a major departure from the techniques she had been using for decades, including tights and stuffing, cigarettes and food, which were chosen for their immediate availability. Examples include concrete furniture like Eames Chair 2015, bronze casts of stuffed phallic shapes like DICK ‘EAD 2018, and giant cast concrete vegetables such as Kevin and Florian 2013 which is installed on the lawn outside Tate Britain. Sculptures are juxtaposed with large-scale

photographs of the artist from throughout her career, including her earliest and most well-known portrait Eating a Banana 1990. Blown up as wallpapers and looking down on her sculptural works, these portraits will reflect the important role of the photographic image in Lucas’s practice and will set up a dialogue between her older and younger self. This juxtaposition continues with Lucas’s most recent self-portrait series Red Sky 2018 shown alongside several larger-scale sculptures and installations, including This Jaguar’s Going to Heaven 2018 – a dismantled car clad in thousands of cigarettes – and Exacto 2018 – a chair skewered with fluorescent tube lights. A series of nude plaster casts such as Pauline, Sadie and Me (Bar Stool) are reunited, having first been shown in 2015 when Lucas represented Britain at the 56th Venice Biennale. A highlight of the exhibition is a large gallery of recent sculptures made between 2019 and 2023, including ten new works which are being displayed for the very first time. Some show a return to the found objects and stuffed tights of Lucas’s early work, such as SUGAR 2020 and CROSS DORIS 2019, while others are rendered in finely cast bronze and resin. These recent works show how Lucas has continued to rethink the themes which have defined her career, including the objectification of the female form and the anthropomorphic potential of everyday objects, while consistently bringing fresh perspectives to her practice. For the live programme, Change Tempo returns with two international artists whose transformational works blur the line between dance and visual art, challenging cultural biases. As part of Change Tempo’s double bill, SU PinWen’s performance art piece Girl’s Notes interrogates notions of gender, drawing inspiration from the traditional views set out in a Taiwanese text which directs girls in the ‘correct’ way to be a woman. Featuring a live on-stage pianist, LIN Mai-ke, this captivating work explores the intentions behind our everyday actions. SU PinWen will also present an accompanying digital piece that will be available as part of Dance Umbrella’s Digital Programme. Completing the doubleheader for Change Tempo, in Comme un symbole, French visual artist and choreographer Alexandre Fandard embodies the image of the marginalised youth, bursting onto the stage to portray a figure as despised as it is eroticised. The work subverts this stereotype in a way that is both deeply compelling and ultimately surprising. For children aged 3-5 years, Skydiver will tour venues around London on the Orbital Touring Network, which celebrates its 10th year. Prepare to soar through the fluffy clouds where flocks of birds and butterflies flutter. Explore the dream-like world that waits above us, in this multisensory dance experience for families. Analogue and digital worlds collide as hip hop movement architects BirdGang Ltd bring together an intergenerational cast from the communities of Croydon for Family (dys) Function, part of This is Croydon, The Mayor of London’s London Borough of Culture. Boomers, Millennials, Gen Z and everyone in between are invited to join a family gathering at Stanley Arts. This new production will feature BirdGang’s unique blend of movement, spoken word and music, in a light-hearted exploration of connectivity across generations. Completing the live programme, ONE DROP is by turns a speculative summoning, a decolonial dream, an autopsy of the Western stage, and an operetta. The title refers to two concepts – the one drop reggae drumbeat, and the one drop rule of the Race Separation Act, created in the US in the early 1900s, in which a single drop of “Black blood” made a person “Black” despite their appearance. This work interrogates the ghosts of the Western stage and its relationship to capitalism, coloniality and modernity. Award-winning Cameroonian-Finnish choreographer and artistic director Sonya Lindfors creates important work exploring power, representation, and Black body politics. Marking a UK premiere at the festival this year, and making her Dance Umbrella Festival debut, Athens-based Ioanna Paraskevopoulou brings MOS to the Barbican. Witness the stage transform into a cinematic soundscape, as two performers create a captivating audio-visual experience. Using everyday objects: umbrellas, plungers, and coconut shells, MOS evokes the movie sounds made by expert foley artists for film and TV. The physical act of generating audio while following the film becomes an energetic dance, with tap numbers turned into recordings that are looped, distorted, paused, and intensified. Ioanna Paraskevopoulou is an award-winning dancer and choreographer who focuses on the interplay between movement, sound, and imagery, and whose past collaborators have included Dance Umbrella Artist Dimitris Papaioannou.

WAR Story The world premier of Katherine Moar’s debut production Farm Hall at Richmond Theatre

T

he world premiere production of Farm Hall comes to Richmond Theatre at the end of a UK tour this autumn. Katherine Moar's debut play, set in the country house where some of Germany's finest scientific minds were held captive during the final days of World War Two, garnered outstanding reviews when it opened at Jermyn Street Theatre in March 2023, directed by Stephen Unwin. Inspired by true events, Farm Hall dramatises the thrilling story of Operation Epsilon; one of the most fascinating and unexplored episodes of World War Two. It is Summer 1945: Hitler is dead, but war in the Pacific rages on. The British government has detained six of Germany’s most gifted nuclear scientists – including

three Nobel Prize winners - at Farm Hall, a stately home in Cambridgeshire. They entertain themselves with some redacted newspapers, a broken piano and a copy of Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit. But their tranquil summer is shattered by the news that the Americans have succeeded where the Germans failed. The United States has not only built an atom bomb, it has used one against Japan. Every reaction to the unfolding events was captured thanks to the British clandestine surveillance of their “guests”. Unbeknownst to the scientists, every inch of Farm Hall was bugged during their stay. Playwright Katherine Moar studied history at the University of Edinburgh and Darwin College, Cambridge. She is currently studying for a PhD at King’s College London. Farm Hall is her first play. The cast bringing this extraordinary true story to life is a line-up of the crème of British actors including William Chubb (The Sandman, Quiz, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell), Alan Cox (Say My Name, Mrs Dalloway, Housewife, 49), Daniel Boyd (On Chesil Beach, Tiger House), Forbes Masson (EastEnders, Catastrophe), Julius D’Silva (The Crown, The Ten Commandments) and George Jones (The Mousetrap, EastEnders). Farm Hall is directed by Stephen Unwin, an award-winning British theatre and opera director. In 1993, he founded English Touring Theatre, for whom he directed more than 30 productions, many of which transferred to London. He was Artistic Director of the new Rose Theatre in Kingston from 2008 to January 2014 and has taught in conservatoires and universities in Britain and America. T

he idea of a Black Sabbath ballet has been on Carlos Acosta’s mind since he first arrived in Birmingham at the start of 2020, just before the pandemic hit. Black Sabbath played their first ever gig in The Crown pub just a stone’s throw from Birmingham Royal Ballet’s base on Thorp Street. The pub was recently saved from demolition and is deemed a heritage site by fans. He said ‘Black Sabbath is probably Birmingham’s biggest export, the most famous (and infamous) cultural entity to ever emerge from the city - so I was naturally drawn to the idea of a collaboration between what most people might think are the most unlikely of partners. The band’s enthusiasm for the project is a huge endorsement. They are putting their trust in us to deliver something completely new and original, and that’s quite a responsibility but one that we are beyond excited to take on. Everyone in the BRB company is thrilled to be involved and we cannot wait to share the vision for the show in more detail in the coming months.I have hand picked the creative team and will work closely with them to make a spectacular show. A full-length, three -act, Ballet Now commission, this brand-new work brings together a host of international creatives including lead Swedish choreographer Pontus Lidburg, Cuban designer Alexandra Arrechea, Tony

The art of great gin Ginagain

R

Rick Allen, Ginagain's founder and artist, had a flavour profile figured out for a gin almost 20 years ago. Growing up on the edge of California's Central Valley where most of the fruit and citrus farms can be found, oranges were always in abundance. When he fell in love with gin, while traveling in England in the 90s, he decided to put the two together and intially created a compound gin for friends and family. It wasn't until Covid lockdown, when there was an abundance of time and an orange tree in the front yard in his house in Santa Cruz California., that he started to perfect the receipe. Working with an independant distillery in the UK February 2022 saw Ginagain launching its first edition, a tiny batch run in a copper pot still. A true London Dry gin, the imported organic Californian orange peel shines through like a hot summer's day in the Central Valley without the overly sweet notes in some of the flavoured gin on the market. Recently awarded 93 points by the International Drinks Specialists they reviewed Ginagain as inviting, bright and open nose with a balance between green herbs, spices, roots and fruity notes. Liquorice miso-glazed aubergine Serves 2–4 Miso aubergine is a crowd-pleaser (and one of the best ways to eat this vegetable). Here, I add liquorice, which brings a bittersweet note that plays off against the darker, umami flavours of soy and miso. This is an adaptation of a Milli Taylor recipe and it’s a versatile dish that can be served alongside sushi rice and tenderstem broccoli for a light lunch, or alongside meat or fish for dinner

INGREDIENTS • 2 caubergines (eggplants) • 2 tbsp vegetable oil • 2 spring onions (scallions),

finely sliced, to garnish • sesame seeds, toasted, to garnish For the glaze: • 1 tbsp white miso • 1/2 tsp caster (superfine) sugar • 2 tsp sake • 1 tsp tamari (or soy sauce) • 1 tsp sesame oil (or 1/2 tsp

toasted sesame oil)

• 1/4 tsp fine liquorice powder To serve: • sushi rice

METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to 190°C fan/210°C/425°F/gas 7. 2 Cut each aubergine in half lengthways, then score the flesh quite deeply (without piercing through the skin) to create a cross-hatched pattern. Brush each half with the oil, then place on a baking tray and bake in the oven for 15–20 minutes until starting to develop some colour. 3 Meanwhile, make the glaze by whisking together all the ingredients in a small bowl. 4 Remove the aubergines from the oven and brush over the glaze, then return to the oven for another 15 minutes until caramelised and deeply golden. 5 Allow the aubergines to cool for around 5 minutes, then scatter over the spring onions and sesame seeds and serve. I prefer to eat just the flesh, leaving the skin behind.

INGREDIENTS • 4 salmon fillets, about 150–200g (5–7oz) each, skinned and pin-boned For the spice rub: • 1/2 tbsp cumin seeds ,toasted and ground • 1 tsp hot paprika • 1 tsp dried oregano • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (or chilli flakes) • 1 tsp garlic powder • 1/4 tsp fine sea salt • 1 tsp maple syrup • 2 tbsp vegetable oil For the avocado crema: • juice of 1 lime, or to taste • 1/4 tsp fine sea salt • 30g (1oz/2 tbsp) creamed coconut (or coconut cream) • 1 tbsp freshly boiled water (omit if using coconut cream) • flesh of 1 avocado • 20g (3/4oz) fresh coriander (cilantro), leaves and stalks • 1 green chilli, deseeded • 1cm (1/2in) piece of fresh root ginger, peeled and roughly chopped • 1/2 small garlic clove, grated • 1/2 tsp maple syrup For the grapefruit salsa: • 1 red grapefruit, peeled, segmented and roughly chopped • 10 radishes, trimmed and quartered • 1/2 cucumber, thinly sliced • pinch of flaky sea salt To serve: • 9–12 tacos (soft or hard, according to preference) or tostadas • small handful of mint leaves • small handful of pumpkin seeds

METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to 160°C fan/180°C /350°F/gas 4. Line a baking tray with foil. 2 To make the spice rub, toast and grind the cumin seeds, then combine with the paprika, oregano, cayenne and garlic powder, and mix with the salt, maple syrup and oil to form a paste. Lay the salmon fillets on the baking tray and coat with the spice rub (use your hands). 3 Heat a heavy-based frying pan (skillet) over a high heat until very hot, then add the salmon fillets and sear well on all sides (45–60 seconds per side). Return the salmon fillets to the baking tray. (You may have to do this in batches, depending on the size of your tray – you don’t want to crowd them as this will prevent you getting a good crust on your salmon.). 4 Transfer the salmon to the oven, cook for 5 minutes, then remove to rest.. 5 For the avocado crema, I find it easiest to use a stick blender. Simply combine the ingredients in a tall container (or jug) and blend until thick and creamy. If using a food processor, use the small bowl: combine the lime juice, salt, coconut cream and boiled water and blend until smooth, then add the rest of the ingredients and blend. Add more lime juice or salt, to taste, or an extra splash of water, if needed, to get the right consistency. 6 For the grapefruit salsa, combine the ingredients in a small serving bowl and mix gently. 7 When ready to serve, warm through your tacos, if liked. Then put all the elements in the middle of the table and allow everyone to build their own. To build a taco, I recommend a spoonful of the avocado crema, followed by the salsa, then flakes of salmon. Garnish with mint leaves and a sprinkling of toasted pumpkin seeds.

“The bitterness of coffee balances the spiced, malty sweetness of the Biscoff” • 4 tsp espresso powder

Coffee + Biscoff no-bake Cheesecake Makes 8–12 slices This cheesecake is inspired by my local ice cream kiosk, Minus 12. Their flavours change regularly, which keeps it exciting, but I’m always thrilled when I see the coffee Speculoos flavour on the board, as the bitterness of coffee balances the spiced, malty sweetness of the Biscoff. This cheesecake is pure, rich, unapologetic indulgence. Although I’ve presented this as a whole cheesecake, it would also work well served as little cheesecake pots in individual glasses. All cheesecakes require an overnight stint in the fridge and this is no different: you won’t get a clean(ish) slice from a set cheesecake unless you give it plenty of time to chill.

INGREDIENTS • 1 x 165g (51/2oz) pack

of light cream cheese

• 60g (21/4oz/2/3 cup) icing

(confectioners’) sugar

• 250g (9oz) smooth Biscoff spread • 500ml (18fl oz/2 cups) double

(heavy) cream, fridge cold

for the biscuit base • 260g (21/4oz/4 tbsp) coconut oil • 30g (1oz) unsalted butter • 25 Biscoff biscuits (about 200g/7oz) plus extra to serve

METHOD 1 Start with the biscuit base. Melt together the coconut oil and butter, then set aside to cool slightly 2 Add the Biscoff biscuits to a food processor and process briefly until you have a coarse crumb. Add the cooled coconut oil and butter mixture, pulse a few more times to combine, then tip into the tin. Alternatively, you can crush the biscuits by hand using a rolling pin and a sealable sandwich bag, and mix everything together in the pan that you melted the butter in. Press the mixture into the base of the tin, using a flat-bottomed glass to get it even. Chill in the fridge. 3 For the filling, whisk together the cream cheese and icing sugar until smooth. Separately, whisk together the Biscoff spread, double cream and espresso powder with an electric hand whisk until just combined. Fold the cream cheese into the Biscoff mix, then spoon this over the chilled biscuit base, smooth over the top and return to the fridge to set overnight.

4 To serve, release the cheesecake from the springform tin by applying a blowtorch to the sides. If you don’t have a blowtorch, simply run a knife around the outside of the cheesecake instead. This is best served chilled, with each slice topped with a crumbled Biscoff biscuit.

TIP When dealing with biscuit bases, it can be helpful to build straight onto the plate you want to serve from – make sure your plate is completely flat, then place the ring of your springform tin directly onto the plate without the base, and build the cheesecake

attachment. Once you’re at the right level – green tick! – you move the filter and touch the coffee icon. A timer counts down to the optimum 30 second shot and if it finishes too soon, there’s a gentle suggestion that you adjust the grind for next time. And then comes the milk. This is possibly the best part, because not only can you choose your default milk – dairy, almond oat, soy – but you don’t even need to hold the jug. You just put the wand in it and sit it on the temperature sensor while it creates perfect 60 degree microfoam all on its own. It then even reminds you to wipe the wand clean, and purges itself briefly afterwards. And the coffee, needless to say, is excellent, particularly thanks to the brilliant foam texture. Is your taste not for one of the standard programmed recipes? No problem – create your own, and name it after yourself. It will remember you. This is clearly the ultimate in home espresso machines. The drip tray tells you when it needs emptying and there is no mess at all. Admittedly, there is some maintenance: the water filter will inevitably need replacing more often than you think, and I haven’t had to descale it yet. But I’m willing to put in the hours. This is a coffee machine of dreams and I wish it were mine.

y home coffee game was fine – excellent, even. I prided myself on my flawless flat whites, the grind just right, good pressure and well-judged foam. My espresso machine was simple, yes, but I had found my favourite beans and things were good. That was before I took delivery of the new Sage Barista Touch Impress. It’s on temporary loan and I’m already worried about how I’ll cope when they take it back. Because this big beast of a bean-to-cup machine makes great coffee, with minimal effort and no

mess, midway between a manual machine and one where you just press a button. It’s operated by a touch screen, which makes me slightly nervous (what if the screen fails: no coffee?) and you simply select your drink. Even a toddler could choose a flat white. And from there, the machine guides you through the process with simple on-screen instructions. Put the filter arm in the grinder, touch the screen to start the grind and then pull the tamper lever when it stops. Here’s one of the clever parts: it learns about your beans through experience, so to begin with, it might under- or overestimate quantity and ask you to grind a bit more, or to remove a bit with a special razor

Q What's the ethos of Wiggy Kit and who

A The Wiggy Kit woman is discerning,

she understands her body and her busy lifestyle, and wants pieces that are going to work as hard as she does. Our mission is to provide sophisticated yet functional pieces that give women the freedom to be their multifaceted selves without needing multiple wardrobes. Versatility is always at the centre of everything we create.

Q Tell us about the new collection and

what inspired it.

A Autumn Winter 2023 was inspired by a

multitude of things. Environment – a sense of place, visualising a house or a location, who lives there? How would they like to dress when inhabiting that space? A great majority of the collection feels like pieces you might have inherited from your father’s wardrobe or a coat borrowed from your boyfriend. I like taking traditional menswear shapes and adapting them for the female form. I collect antique wallpaper prints and fabric remnants – I have boxes and boxes of offcuts that I draw from when developing collections and create almost all of my own fabrics and

Q How did you embark on setting up a

fashion label?

A I have always been interested in clothing

and the ability to transform yourself through makeup and accessories. Having trained as a dancer and later working in retail, I am not afraid of hard work or putting myself out there. When I noticed that I had two separate summer wardrobes – one for London and one for holidays – I decided to create a brand that provided a solution to the problem of warm weather dressing, and from there I moved into dressing my client year-round with the recent launch of Autumn/Winter collections.

From the very beginning, it was important to ensure that the brand offered something unique with its own point of view, a product that solved so many sartorial problems and that could take you anywhere around the world. Q What is your background? A I grew up in the UK and moved to the US

at 18. I didn’t go to university, instead going straight into work in various boutiques. At the world-renowned boutique Capitol, in Charlotte, North Carolina and then at Catherine Prevost in London, I gained so much of the experience and knowledge needed to create Wiggy Kit.

Q Do you design for yourself? A I think it must be for oneself or else it

is impossible to effectively problem-solve.

Fortunately there are plenty of women who appreciate amazing cuts, interesting silhouettes, custom prints and beautiful fabrics that feel amazing to wear. The customer base has grown exponentially because I still work to create versatile and hard-working pieces that can be worn anywhere; once a client tries a piece they come back for the whole collection. I get complimented everywhere I go by complete strangers and so do all my clients. There is no greater driver for business. Q Reversible items are a recurring theme

will be launching the party collection next month, a move into occasion wear for the festive season and beyond. What I like is the slightly off-kilter approach we have to party dressing that makes it so unique and special. Definitely not predictable. We will also be doing more trunk shows in the USA, and hopefully in the UK too: they are a great way to connect to our fabulous clients in person.

Q You're involved with the Prince's Trust Women supporting Women - can you tell us about that? A I am a fairly new ambassador with the Princes Trust, having been introduced by my dear friend, India Hicks. I was blown away listening to the stories of the women being

The founder of Dress Cheshire, Christine Colbert, on a passion for pre-loved fashion and how to build the wardrobe of your dreams for less 66

Q As the owner of a marketing agency, why did you launch pre-loved designer fashion boutique, Dress Cheshire… A It was because of my love for good value second-hand fashion and luxury brands, something that don’t traditionally go hand-in-hand, other than the odd find at a local charity shop (if you’re lucky). I saw the opportunity of opening a highend designer boutique selling pre-loved luxury handbags, clothes and shoes. Within 15 months of opening our now famous pink door in Cheshire’s Prestbury village, we were forced to close by the pandemic, so with my corporate marketing head on I quickly changed the direction of the business and launched an ecommerce website and social media selling, which has seen us grow exponentially as we ship all over the UK. Fast forward to now and footfall to the shop is back to being as buoyant as ever, and our online sales remain strong - we even do live shopping events on Facebook and Instagram every Friday night. Q So what kind of things do you sell? A We are a designer shopaholic’s dream. We

have pre-loved Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Hermès, Gucci, Celine, Mulberry and more, as well as many fabulous high street labels and resort brands too. We have designer handbags, shoes, coats, jackets, dresses, tops, skirts, scarves and even sunglasses, jewellery and watches too including Rolex, Patek and Cartier, many with original boxes, dust bags and tags. There is literally something for everyone’s taste and everyone’s budget.

Q Dress has great reviews online, what’s the key to having such a good relationship with your customers? A We have built a fantastic reputation for selling second-hand authentic designer items. Our standards are as high as our levels of customer service. And looking after our sellers is really important as they trust us with their precious things. All this has given us a 5 Star excellent rating on Trustpilot, something I’m really proud of. Q Why do you think investing in preloved fashion is so important? A You can save so much money buying second-hand and people are increasingly wanting to buy fashion more sustainably too, so recycling and reusing is important.

Plus, it feels great to get a one-off find! Our rails are full of many hardly used or used once designer items. There’s a real buzz in finding something really special and with prices at staggeringly less than retail. Q Are you ever tempted to buy

the things for yourself? A Oh yes! My own wardrobe has significantly improved since I have shifted to buying second-hand. Our range of brands and styles provides people with the confidence to upscale and change their look, without busting their bank balance. Lots of people don’t have the confidence to go into some very high-end boutiques, but at Dress you will find a Chanel jacket on the same rail as an LK Bennett dress. My very first pre-loved outfit was a little black dress from Vivienne Westwood that I purchased over 20 years ago for about £80, which felt like a lot of money back then. It still looks fabulous today as it’s a timeless classic piece. Q Is a second-hand designer handbag worth the investment? A Absolutely! The luxury brands I would recommend investing in are Chanel, Hermès, Louis Vuitton and Dior. As

these brands continue to increase their prices year on year, the secondhand market is following suit, so it can be a good investment long term. Q How exactly does the process of buying and selling work? A It’s really easy to sell with us, you simply register on our website and bring or send your items into the shop. Our sellers are as important to us as the people who buy from us, without them we simply wouldn’t have the right stock. The great thing for customers is they get to build the wardrobe of their dreams for considerably less money than buying new, and we only take our commission on the sale of the item after it has sold. If it doesn’t sell, the owner can take it back. Q You work with good causes, what do you do for them? A We have a number of charity shop partners who take away unsold items that sellers no longer want back. We e have helped raise thousands of pounds for local and national charities.

The “London Lash Queen”

t’s Friday morning and I’m at Daxita Vaghela’s Beauty Clinic at AthertonCox near Marylebone High Street. Renowned as one of the leading brow and lash experts, Daxita’s client list is like a who’s who of A list celebrities. I’m here for lash extensions, and I confess to Daxita that it’s my first time. She immediately makes me feel at ease, asking me lots of questions – from how much make-up I usually wear, to if I have any special events coming up. I’m off on holiday the next day and want to look doe-eyed (but not so much so, that my lashes look unnatural). We discuss the options, and I decide on curled ‘Classic Lashes.’ I lie down on the bed and close my eyes. While she works, Daxita tells me about how she was the first to bring lash extensions to the UK. Her 20+ year career has been an impressive one, and she is known for being one of the fastest in the business. Synthetic lashes are individually applied to my natural lashes, which, she explains, have a life cycle of about five weeks, so the extensions will just shed as they fall out. The application is totally painless and Daxita is so gentle, I barely feel anything. My natural lashes are quite short and stubby and when I was younger I wouldn’t leave the house without several coats of mascara. I definitely don’t need any eye make-up after Daxita has worked her magic. My lashes have been transformed – almost as if a real-life filter has been applied to my eyes. They are long and soft, gently curled at the edges – opening up my face. On holiday, I swim in the sea, lounge in saunas and steam rooms, and co-sleep with my toddler. SEEING STRAIGHT The trouble with choosing glasses is that you can’t see without glasses. Absolutely has found a solution: the virtual try-on By PENDLE HARTE

T

here are lots of lovely frames around, I can see that. A whole room full of them, a vast collection. Do I want black ones? Or clear ones? What about green? Subtle differences in shape and dimensions make a huge difference to how they sit on your face. I know that the right pair for me is there somewhere. There’s just one problem: I take my specs off to try them on, and I can’t see. It’s the paradox of buying new glasses. They look great on the shelf, but remove your old ones to try them on, and those of us most in need of visual assistance find ourselves pressed up against a mirror squinting. Contact lenses are an option, of course, but we’re told to abstain for several hours before a sight test. Bringing a friend is another solution, but even the best of friends struggle to care beyond the third option – and I want to try on everything. Happily, there’s a new way: the virtual try-on. I thought that I was a problem case due not only to my extremely poor vision (myopia, presbyopia and astigmatism) but also my weirdly small face. Bloobloom has a huge selection of frames – and the website allows you to filter by fit. I choose ‘narrow’ and that eliminates all but nine styles, and from there I entertain myself for some time with the virtual try-on that uses my camera to show each frame on my actual face. It’s very accurate, even over my existing glasses. I could have ordered five pairs for an athome try on, but why bother when the virtual way is so good? I upload my prescription and within a week I am the proud wearer of new specs that fit me perfectly. Boom. Or more accurately, Bloobloom.

A

s a time-poor toddler mum, getting out of the house to do exercise can be tricky. Anything beyond the gym days I’ve preagreed with my husband is a challenge at the moment, so I always appreciate being able to exercise at home (squeezing in a quick training session during nap time is a dream!). Doing the same videos day-in-day-out can get dull very quickly though. So I was excited to discover the Silver Linings platform, which has new content added to it regularly. Silver Linings was founded by Chrissy Sundt, a classical Pilates, Yoga and barre instructor who also has a passion for holistic wellness. Sundt has been teaching for over 20 years and combines

education with her ongoing work as a choreographer. After eight years of training at the Royal Ballet School and a dance career that saw her dance with both the Royal Ballet and the Birmingham Royal Ballet, an ankle injury led her to discover the rehabilitative benefits of Pilates. After teaching in multiple boutique studios across London, a series of trips to Kamalame Cay (the postcardperfect private island in the Bahamas), inspired her to launch her first Silver Linings Wellbeing retreat. Two channels on YouTube: ‘SL By Chrissy’ and ‘Silver Linings @Home’ aim to bring the benefits of her retreats to a wider audience. The athome classes deliberately avoid expensive equipment, and users only need a mat to participate. Classes are delivered by a roster

of brilliant practitioners – with specialisms from Yoga to mediation, HITT, barre, core, and more. What I’ve really loved is the varying length of the classes – with quick 12 minute workouts and more in-depth 45 minute-long classes (perfect for those with demanding schedules!). The way the classes combine different disciplines is also refreshing, and all the movements can be modified, depending on the level you’re at. As an ex-ballet dancer myself, I've really enjoyed Sundt's choreography and pacing as well. All-in-all it’s safe to say I’m hooked already, and the best bit? t used to be that some “good work” would have your friends asking for your doctor’s details – but now a successful facial tweak is more likely one that leaves them asking where you went on holiday. The new generation of needle-free facial treatments are not about changing your face, but rather about perking it up in an indefinable way, leaving you looking radiant and rested. The world of aesthetic treatments has come a very long way from the days of ice-rink smooth foreheads and swollen trout pouts. Aesthetic reports indicate that 1 in 4 of us are considering an aesthetic treatment but increasingly, patients are asking for non-injectable treatment options and interest is growing in less invasive yet highly effective techniques to deliver a more natural approach to anti-ageing. Ageing is a natural part of life but we are not always ready when we see it reflected in our faces. Facial ageing is about so much more than wrinkles on the skin surface. It starts and continues with loss of volume in

the muscles, bones and soft tissues below our skin, and simply filling areas of loose skin with dermal fillers without addressing the loss of elasticity or reduced muscle tone can lead to a less natural outcome. The introduction of a treatment for both face and neck that combines innovative muscle stimulation technologies with radiofrequency (RF) skin tightening and hybrid energy RF microneedling has created waves of excitement in the world of aesthetic medicine. You may already have seen the social media coverage of US celebrities raving about the results from the Lumenis triLift. The newly packaged triLift machine may not be available in the UK as yet, but you will be able to try this treatment in any advanced clinic with the Lipofirm MED+ on its treatment menu. The triLift (also called the Legend PRO or Lipofirm Pyramid Plus in the UK) uses sophisticated technologies to target each layer of the face in a way that optimises rejuvenation for that particular area. It also has the advantage of being suitable for all skin types.

A sequenced protocol combines in-motion muscle stimulation and radiofrequency, with or without radiofrequency microneedling, to reposition facial tissues, increase dermal thickness and improve skin texture and skin tone. Hybrid energy microneedling conducted through a highly advanced electrode array is delivered precisely where it needs to go to increase the volume in the skin, without having the unwanted side-effects of loss of facial fat pads in the face, or prolonged redness and swelling. Other muscle stimulating facial treatments are now in development and the Emface has arrived in the UK with lots of media attention. It’s only targeted certain areas of the face for now but there were hints at the launch that the company might be working on a treatment for neck and under the chin, so keep an eye open for that to arrive in the future.

ecorum reigned in the Victorian dining room, which would be decorated in rich colours and lined with family portraits. In the contemporary version, this space can still conjure up a sense of occasion, but with far less formality. Now, it is more common for the eating area to work in conjunction with other rooms of the house, such as an adjoining living space or as part of an open-plan kitchen. Large or small, these spaces offer plenty of scope to bring together the best of old and new. With affluent Victorians enjoying meals that could last up to nine courses, the dining room was where guests would have had plenty of time to sit and admire their host’s taste, and

the decor needed to impress accordingly. At the time, the dining room was often the first space to be decorated, in a style that tended towards darker, richer and what were seen as more ‘masculine’ colours. Shades such as claret and deep green were also practical, as they hid the sooty residue left by gas lights, candles and open fires. The intricate patterns of plaster ceiling roses were also both decorative and functional, catching the worst of the soot; some designs even included flues to direct the smoke outside. Traditionally, the dining room would have an austere and imposing black fireplace, balanced by a lighter version in white marble in the drawing room. A mahogany dining table, upholstered chairs and a sideboard displaying the best china were standard; on the floor, a rug might have been topped by a drugget,

Susannah Parker’s dining room comes into its own in the evening, when the candles are lit

Today we prefer our dining rooms to be connected to the kitchen, rather than separated from it a simple woven cloth for catching crumbs or spills. A dado rail would have run around the room to protect wallpaper from scuffs when chairs were pushed back against the wall. Naturally, the pattern-loving Victorians took the opportunity to use the dado rail as a visual divider, with different decoration above and below, while the rail itself might also be painted with small decorative motifs. Every part of the dining experience was carefully considered, from the ornaments to the dishes that were served. Isabella Beeton is associated with cookery today, but her books and magazine columns also included plenty of advice on how the mistress of the house should conduct herself and maintain a harmonious home. The rise of such manuals was a sign that society was in flux. The middle-class wife – not to mention her servants – was slotting into a changing urban world, where information was handed down in the form of a book or newspaper article rather than from mother to daughter. Of course, in the Victorian home the hard work that went on in the kitchen remained behind closed doors, and the layouts of our 19th-century houses attest to this. But today we prefer our dining rooms to be connected

to the kitchen, rather than separated from it. Cooking has become a social activity, making the kitchen-diner the hub of family life. The rear kitchen-diner extension is a common feature of many updated urban Victorian homes, often with rooflights and glass doors opening onto the garden. When sensitively done, extending into the side return or back garden can create extra space that works harmoniously with the proportions of the original layout. If you’re planning an extension with lots of glazing, a solar-control coating on the glass will prevent it from getting uncomfortably hot in summer; in colder months, double- or triple-glazing will reduce heat waste. Acoustic layers can also be laminated between panes of toughened glass to provide sound insulation – useful in busy city locations. Interior designer Susannah Parker’s dining room comes into its own in the evening, when the candles are lit and reflective surfaces catch the light. The proportions of the furniture are also important, with the long antique table complementing the mid-century Ercol dining chairs surprisingly well. The original shutters have been painted in the same shade as the walls for a seamless continuity.

ightwell House, a contemporary residence in Belsize Park, is a stunning example of how to build down, adding another floor to your home which feels luxurious, cohesive, and spacious. XUL Architecture’s director Sebastian Sandler explains: “One of the main challenges of the project was to create an extension that allows the ingress of natural light into the basement while still providing enough space for multi-functional rooms, including a

gym and guest bedroom, a TV area, study, as well as a downstairs bathroom. To achieve this, we always try to connect the internal staircase over all floors so that the flow is cohesive and create lightwells in different corners of the floorplan to allow for multiple locations of daylight.” The result is a generous 3.9m height spacious light-filled basement that takes advantage of every inch of available land. The ground floor was extended by 5.2m to create openings for light wells, while the basement shape was altered to maximise space within planning guidelines. The new basement maximises the potential floor space as much as Camden Council would allow within their planning guidelines, increasing the depth of the building by 50%. The basement gym-slash-bedroom has a sliding door to hide the Peloton away while guests stay and a wall bed that lowers into the space. Opposite, the light well brings light to the study with high-level windows providing privacy to the bedroom. Kitchens can often be overwhelming spaces for some people, particularly for people who are neurodiverse.There is often a lot going on, from cooking books to appliances to things drying on racks. They may have challenges with executive function and keeping it tidy can be a struggle. In this kitchen, a lot of the countertop is hidden behind pocket doors so you can have things open

as you work, but then you can close the doors and have a calming, neat continuous surface when you are done and it is time to relax with a cup of tea. Designing quiet spaces with little sensory stimulation is also a great way to provide those much-needed spaces to retreat. As with many XUL Architecture projects, dark areas were used for utility and plant rooms allowing the brightest rooms to be used for living functions. Additionally, black-out blinds were installed and linked to a Smart Home voice-controlled system, allowing the homeowners to adjust the light levels easily. The ground floor boasts a contemporary staircase, while Crittall-style doors open to the renovated formal reception room or continue from the hallways to the walk-through extension with dining room and roof lights to enjoy the night sky and views of the garden whilst entertaining friends. A clever feature introduced to the ground floor extension was to slide all of the glass doors back into the wall, creating an unobstructed view of the garden during the warm summer months. This renovation has allowed the family to grow into this home and have enough space for privacy and quiet activities without disturbing others in another part of the home.

he oldest of London’s three historic power stations, Lots Road, has been transformed into Powerhouse, a collection of 260 luxury apartments. As the building once responsible for electrifying London’s railways begins its new chapter, we look at the history of this iconic London landmark. Lots Road power station was completed in 1905 for the purpose of powering London’s network of underground railways. Funded by prolific American financier Charles Yerkes, it was the world’s most expensive power station ever built and the largest generator of electricity. Designed by James Russell Chapman, the power station was erected at the junction of Chelsea Creek and the River Thames, supported by the first and largest steel-frame in the British Isles. “The power station is an important symbol of the industrial era”

The build included four 275 foot chimneys, designed to direct the smoke and gas away from the power station’s coal boilers and clear the surrounding residential homes. As part of its refurbishment, the two taller chimneys are being retained and repaired, with access ways created through the lowest level of the chimneys linking the inner courtyard to bridges across Chelsea Creek. The original façades, which unusually incorporated glazed windows, lived very different lives, the south side bleached by the sun for over 100 years, and the west side exposed to coal explosions throughout its lifetime. Despite not being a listed building, the power station represents an important symbol of the industrial era, and the remaining historic elements of the building have been painstakingly preserved and incorporated into the new development, including original archways, steelwork, and brickwork. Once known as the ‘cathedral of the industrial age’, the power station’s legacy of public service is key to the reimagining of this London landmark into a modern-day icon. During WW2 the building continued to power the Underground, ensuring tube trains continued to run while London suffered power cuts. It is believed that the windows on the Thames side of the power station were bricked up during this time as a way of minimising potential bomb damage. A series of six posters were commissioned by London Transport in 1944 to celebrate the power station’s contribution to the war and London’s survival of the Blitz.

A further contribution to London life came in the 1970s when, following complications with LBC and Capital Radio’s antenna towers, the power station allowed the radio channels to hang a makeshift antenna between its two chimneys, which was used several more times for radio transmission until 2007. In the 1960s the power station was converted from coal burning to heavy fuel oil and a further conversion to gas occurred in the 1970s, resulting in several visible changes being made to the building, most notably the lowering of one of the four chimneys to roof level. A second chimney was removed 10 years later to give the building a more coherent look. Although by 1985 the National Grid was a more costeffective way of operating the Underground, generators at Lots Road were retained as back-up until the ageing machinery came to the end of its life in 2002, when the entire site was finally closed, becoming the world’s longestserving power station. Masterminded by Farrells London as the cornerstone of Chelsea Waterfront, Powerhouse’s 260 luxury apartments will boast interiors designed to reflect the building’s heritage and industrial legacy. Residents will have direct access to 400m of Thames waterfront opened to the public for the first time in 100 years as well as to a concierge with 5-star services around the clock. o you remember what you doing in 1978? Grease was the must-see film that year. The Ford Cortina was the UK’s bestselling car. Kate Bush was in the charts with Wuthering Heights. In Spring, 1978, Alison from Whitley Bay visited the Delcor showroom in Newcastle to buy her first sofa. She recalls: “We were impressed by the design, the comfort and the fact the furniture was made for you”. Looking back this time, Alison said “My husband Andy and I had trawled round all the shops in Newcastle. Up until then we had made do with handme-downs and secondhand furniture. We didn’t believe in buying cheap items - we saved up (as you did in those days) and then bought something we thought would last.” Here in Northumberland, Delcor has been creating handmade upholstered

During college, interior design at AS or A-level didn’t exist. I took part in an art foundation where you learn a number of artistic mediums and soon after joined University. As part of the degree, the first year we followed the same course as the architecture students so I developed a good base knowledge of buildings and construction. I eventually graduated with a first-class honours in interior design, something I was very proud to achieve.

for clients who have no knowledge of that world. I want to make the process easy to understand and enjoyable. I like to work with people who want to work together and create a strong team dynamic. I believe this is the key to successful projects.

Q Did something inspire you to go it alone? A Yes, lockdown. Having two children under the age of two

and living away from my family without an immediate support network I needed the flexibility. I had always aspired to having my own business, but the need to support my family both financially and also as a parent gave me the final push.

Q From day one, what did you want to offer? A I have always wanted to prove that interior design is more

than the stereotyped perception of ‘wallpapering and curtains treatments’. I want to showcase the benefit of using an interior designer. It was a challenge starting out on my own, I have delivered many prestigious projects, but all whilst working for other companies and you are not allowed to showcase this. You are starting from scratch and asking clients to put a lot of faith in what you say and so I was keen to always give the best account of myself and develop that trusting relationship. I want clients to receive the benefit of my design knowledge, the skills of my trusted supply chain and the trade relationships I have developed.

Q How do you like to work with clients? A I like to get to know my clients, this helps me to understand

their character and what is important to them. I have a preferred style, but I don’t try to force this on clients, the design process should be collaborative. I am honest in my approach and work closely with the client to ensure that the project exceeds their expectations. For me trust is imperative. Q Have you evolved in any way? A As designers we grow every day, that is what keeps our

profession interesting. As a business we have evolved from myself working at the dining table, to a small studio. I have had to develop my management skills as I am now responsible for the wellbeing of our team. Like most I don’t have a business background so I am always learning about the rules of running a successful business. I like to dive in and test myself, I built my first website, designed and developed all the branding and marketing and generally try to keep pushing myself all the time.

Q Can you pick out three projects that really show what

you are capable of doing, from brief to completion? A 1. CHELSEA PROJECT

This project demonstrates how we can work with complex refurbishment projects. This house was taken back to its core, we worked with the contractor to make this house compliant, more sustainable and become a comfortable place to live with a homely sense in the centre of London. 2. SURREY PROJECT

This project demonstrates how we can work to most budgets, with understated luxury. We upcycled most of the house and made the house work for the growing family and their needs. 3. HAMPSTEAD PROJECT

This project is a good example of how well we manage our larger scale projects. I presented the concept designs to the client in May and we installed and completed this extensive refurbishment project in November. The project has just won best ‘Luxury Residence in London’ by Design Et Al 2023 award, my first award since setting up on my own and something I am extremely proud of. Q Would you say there is a Samantha Bartlett

design style? A We are understated luxury, making a luxurious home live-

able and not a show home. We do not have a set style, this is governed by the client and their needs, but our ethos does help drive this in our design and approach. Q What’s next for you? A On a fun level, we continue to celebrate our award win, we

Are you considering a loft conversion but not sure where to start? Here’s our beginners’ guide By PENDLE HARTE

I

f you live in a Victorian or Edwardian house in London and you haven’t converted your loft, why not? Loft conversions are, in most cases, a no brainer. Swapping dark attic space for a bright bedroom and ensuite bathroom not only transforms a house, but it also adds about 20 per cent to its value. What’s not to like? Of course you have to get it right, and there are several things to consider. First of all, is there enough head height to even begin? You need a minimum loft ceiling height of 2.2 metres to accommodate your conversion. If your ceiling doesn’t measure up, you’ll need to lower the floor or heighten the roof, which can be costly and messy work, though eminently possible. If you’re in a conservation area you’re unlikely to be allowed to

raise the roof, while if you’re lowering ceilings on the floor below, then you will most likely need to move out while the work is done. In most cases, this won’t be necessary. Loft conversions typically don’t require planning permission However, large changes are required to meet building regulations to ensure the structure is stable and safe. If you’re unsure, your architect or surveyor should be on hand to guide you. Most residential houses – unless they’re detached – will need a Party Wall Agreement: if you’re making structural changes to a shared party wall in a terraced house, you’ll need to get written permission from neighbours on both sides before work begins – and in most cases, this is a simple affair. The most common loft conversion is a dormer conversion, which involces an additional

space built onto an existing roof. They create more room than other conversions. Installing a dormer onto the back of the roof and rooflights onto the street-facing from side is a straightforward affair for most Victorian houses. It’s important you decide how you want your conversion to look before beginning work, so you can accommodate your must-haves around non-negotiables like plumbing. Plan for the biggest additions first, like bathroom fittings, built-in storage and large furniture, as these require the most space. If you’re planning to have sockets or wall lights on either side of a bed, for instance, then you’ll need to decide where the bed goes before the walls are plastered – so be prepared. You’ll also need to think about where to put light switches and make decisions on everything from banister style to flooring,

so it’s a good idea to be prepared. It's important to set a budget before you approach architects and labourers, outlining exactly what you can and can’t afford. Fees quoted by an architect tend to cover drawings and submissions to necessary authorities, but hidden costs can creep in later unless they’ve explicitly stated otherwise. The quotes you receive will be for the extension alone, so you will need to factor in additional costs for materials, labour, furniture and fittings. Hiring a dedicated loft company can make sense because they will take care of everything from the survey and drawings to the final build, sending electricians, plumbers and joiners in when required. J O I N T H E C L U B Life is sweet at Club Med’s Sicily outpost in Cefalù By PENDLE HARTE

S

ome people are a bit sniffy about all-inclusive holidays. To those people I say two words: Club Med. Nobody who has ever been to Club Med would have any doubts about the sheer joy of its all-inclusive philosophy, and once you’ve experienced one you’re very likely to return. Those who know, know that a true holiday consists of a real break from all domestic responsibilities and almost all decision making. Other factors include never having to queue, never experiencing the slightest annoyance and definitely never having to carry any cash. From the start, we’re well looked-after. Club Med’s Sicily outpost is in Cefalù, on the north western coast; we land at Palermo in the evening and are swept off in a taxi, arriving too late for dinner. Or so we thought. Our two rooms – well, not rooms, they’re self-contained small houses, cleverly and discreetly cut into the rock, all of them precisely angled for perfect sea views – are waiting for us with dinner laid out, plus a bottle of Prosecco and even pudding. It’s very Club Med to anticipate your needs so precisely, and that’s exactly how our week continues. Cefalù is one of Club Med’s more luxurious resorts. While it’s great for families, it doesn’t cater to children under the age of eight – and because of its extra exclusivity there are more adults travelling without children than we’ve seen at other Club Meds. It’s a beautiful spot, a sprawling resort set in cliffs along the coast with views over the bay to Cefalù and the Rocca, the impressive limestone cliff that dominates the town. There has been a resort on this site since the 1950s, when Village Magique consisted of much simpler wooden huts, and the new

incarnation is just a few years old and feels fresh and contemporary. There’s a vast pool, but the best swimming is in the sea, where loungers are stylishly laid out on platforms set into the rocks and there are floating pontoons to swim to and dive from. Our days settle into a routine punctuated by visits to the watersports centre which has a dreamy location in a small creek below the resort. Here there are lots of things on offer, including paddleboarding – regular style and the step pedal kind – plus kayaks and sailing dinghies, which require an introductory lesson and despite our bad luck with the wind (there is none most days) we manage to learn a few sailing skills. Between us we experiment with several activities, all of them easy to find on the Club Med app, including yoga, archery and circuit training (I manage one class). Luxury here involves never having to book ahead or worry that there won’t be a space. If you decide you want a kayak right now, there’ll be one waiting for you. Everything is seamless and ready at all times. I had hoped to visit Etna, and we could have taken an excursion – but it’s not exactly close. “Would it mean missing lunch?” asked daughter number two. It certainly would, and that was the end of that. Because meal times are a huge highlight at Club Med, and at Cefalù especially. Breakfast includes everything you could imagine, and we learn to hold back a bit because unless you’re very early, there’s not all that much time before lunch. So it’s mostly fruit, yoghurt and pistachios for me, but the teenagers are all over waffles with pistachio paste, miniature cakes and chocolate pastries.

Lunch happens either at the main restaurant as a buffet – a breathtaking one with an extensive salad bar plus lots of pasta, fish and meat, plus daily pizzas and more – or (and this is our favourite) at the smaller beach restaurant, where chefs prepare simple dishes of grilled fish and vegetables in an impossibly dreamy shady spot. Dinner is back at the main restaurant, after pre-dinner drinks and snacks by the pool. In fact there are snacks by the pool seemingly at all times – one one memorable occasion it’s a tomato festival. Tomatoes are a highlight of every meal, in fact, as are pistachios, a Sicilian speciality and we will never forget the dessert pizzas with sweet, bright green pistachio paste. We’re also well entertained with a programme that includes live bands, dance performances, a light show and more, all thanks to the classic Club Med team of GOs, who have many skills: the afternoon sailing instructor is a dancer in the evening. On the last night there’s a prizegiving ceremony, where everyone proudly collects medals for outstanding achievements in yoga, archery and sailing. udrey Hepburn famously said: “Paris is always a good idea.” And while the City of Light undeniably has many charms, this sentiment is a hotly debated one. Is Paris overrated and over-crowded? Or is it the ultimate cultural, romantic and gourmet destination? Having not visited for some time, we couldn’t wait to rediscover the city so we came with fresh eyes and open hearts and minds. Our journey starts with coffee, croissants and glossy magazines in the luxury of Eurostar’s Business Premier lounge. We move at a leisurely

pace to claim our spacious Business Class seats onboard. Travelling by train this way undoubtedly makes life better. We settle down in comfort to a tasty breakfast and a glass of bubbles -we’re on our way to Paris, after all. In what feels like an incredibly short time later (it happens when you’re travelling Business Class), we’re disembarking at the Gare du Nord and heading for our destination for the weekend. invigorating swims in the indoor pool washed with natural light and chilling outside on the peaceful terrace. We treat ourselves to facials and massages at Chi The Spa and try out the irresistible cocktails at Le Bar Botaniste. We saunter down the nearby Champs Elysees and visit the Yves Saint Laurent museum for our designer fix. Falling more in love with Paris by the day. But when night falls the city takes on an even more enchanting guise. After dusk, the Eiffel Tower ups its sparkle quotient, with extra twinkling for five minutes at the beginning of every hour (until it’s switched off at 11.45 pm). It’s magical and unforgettable and we don’t even have to leave our room to wonder at it. There’s no doubt in our minds that Paris Shangri-Lastyle is definitely a good idea. Always. LOBBY, SHANGRI-LA

As well as its enviable views and its location close to all the main attractions, the Shangri-La Paris is famous for its food. The breakfast menu reads like a catalogue of indulgence and we tuck into basketfuls of perfect buttery pastries, flavourful coffee and the ultimate start to any day - truffled scrambled eggs. We sample the fabulous summer lunch menu in the sunshine in La Bauhinia’s stunning secret garden with shared plates of tuna tataki, sashimi, seabass crudo and indulgent lobster ravioli. Summer captured on a plate. The hotel is also home to France's only Chinese restaurant with a Michelin star. Shang Palace celebrates southeast China’s cuisine and is quite simply stupendous. We loved the special menu with its sashimi, gorgeous dumplings and melt-in-themouth Wagyu beef sirloin. A meal to remember. Of course the food should be memorable - the city is known as a gourmet destination. Outside the hotel we loved dining at the family-owned Au Petit Tonneau with its traditional French menu and lunching on the highly Instagrammable Girafe's terrace in the Eiffel Tower's shadow. For the current owners, acquiring the building in 2010 was a case of love at first sight but also a major gamble. They confide: “This renovation, which we wanted as faithful as possible to the rules of the art and the “soul” of the buildings, was made possible when we were made aware of many history components around this residence. We brought in three contemporary history master's degree students from the University of Grenoble to research the history of the Château and they were slowly able to piece together its intricate heritage.” The goal was for the château to recreate the relaxed atmosphere of the age. Thus, to convey the power of attraction of Aix-les-Bains, where aristocrats, crowned heads, artists and intellectuals – from the Austrian Empress "Sissi" to Sarah Bernhardt, not forgetting Queen Victoria and King George I – all flocked to enjoy the thermal "seasons". The result? After a ten-year restoration, the building has been brought back to life, transformed into an elegant historical boutique-hotel that offers modern comfort as well as a unique journey back into a forgotten era: Aix-les-Bains' golden age as a spa resort. Q What is your teaching background

and what attracted you to working with the early years age group? A I have been teaching for over 30 years from ages 2 ½ up to 13 in a range of subjects and for the past 14 years in leadership roles. My original interest and degree in the early years of education and this role offered the opportunity to re-engage fully with this age group. Q How does Fulham School support the

A The Nursery is an integral part of the Pre-

A We are aware that many parents have a very busy life and may find it hard to juggle the needs of home and work. Offering wraparound care means that the children can attend the school site between 7.30am and 5.30pm. This hopefully eases the pressures of the work/ life balance. The King Alfred School is looking outside when it comes to building transferrable skills

ince being founded in 1898, The King Alfred School has focussed on the development of the whole child. In an age where the usefulness of exam results as the primary measure of student ability is being questioned, the School believes in the importance of providing young people with a breadth of educational experiences to support them to grow into creative, confident and thoughtful individuals who are prepared well for their future. KEW HOUSE GIRLS ROWING ON THE THAMES

K

ew House School Boat Club is a rookie in rowing terms, but it’s growing from the ground up and training girls and boys to give of their best, have fun and maybe take the sport a whole lot further. It was established in 2018, and with a firm pledge to offer rowing to all pupils as a school sport. Every afternoon, Monday to Friday, rowing is one of the sports options, so all senior year groups can take to the water and learn about the teamwork and skill involved. Kew House is, of course, in prime territory on the Thames, as this West London stretch is home to a plethora of competitive rowing teams and clubs – and with a long history of achievement. “We’re literally in the middle of the rowing bubble, where everyone’s rowing – there’s a lot of action on the river,” says

Paddy (Patrick) Graham, Head of Rowing. At Year 7 and 8, access to rowing is kept at once a week. This is, says Paddy Graham, to ensure longevity and avoid burn out. “Children at that age are very focused on wanting success,” he says. “But we have a progressive pathway.” Those boys and girls that take to rowing (and many do) have the option from Year 9 to get involved in the life of the Kew House School Boat Club (KHSBC). This means rowing sessions at weekends and after school. This moves things up several gears over time, and by Year 11 boys and girls can participate in the full club training programme. This means seven training sessions a week, including an early-morning row and weekend river meets. There’s no doubt that training with KHSBC involves commitment, but for many pupils at Kew House it becomes a passion – Paddy

Graham says it can be an addictive sport. “They fall in love with the social, physical and mental aspects of rowing,” he says. “There’s no greater feeling than doing one rowing stroke and travelling x metres in one body movement, one where you are using all your muscles, plus improving cardiovascular endurance.” He is at pains to explain to pupils who enjoy rowing that this is a sport with longevity – offering opportunities at elite, club and more casual level through university and long afterwards. “It can become part of daily routine. I know because I, and everyone I rowed with at a young age, still have to have some form of physical structure around our adult lives. So it’s something that stays with you for a long time,” he says. Building a rowing culture from scratch is, he adds, about much more than action on the water. “Something personally that A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

I’ve loved in creating this boat club is that it’s such a community sport.” Kew House parents are firmly on side and have been huge supporters of both the fundraising required for kit, and the social aspects that come with getting involved and cheering on their child and the home team from the riverbank. Many parents attending for the first time are amazed at how much their child has developed their rowing skillset – and all the teamwork required for rowing success. Bear in mind that boats have to be got down to the water and readied for the race and the team doing the rowing all pull together before the racing proper can even start. Parents have expressed delight that their teenager has finally found a sport they really love. This includes the less obviously sporty children who suddenly find their

place as part of the crew or discover a gift for strategy and leadership as rowing cox. For the school, rowing has been a tremendous addition to sporting choice – co-ed, part of local Thames-side heritage and something the whole school can get behind. “Rowing really showcases how resilient and robust children can be, and how willing they are to push themselves to their absolute limits for the team. That’s been a great success story for Kew House,” says Paddy Graham. “We wouldn’t have been the success story without a supportive parent body,” he adds. The KHSBC Summer House Regatta, taking place in June, is hugely important and a day when everyone can celebrate achievement, teamwork and club spirit. “It’s the one event where the whole boat house gets together, from year 7-13. Boys and girls and all the parents are there.” There’s even a parents’ rowing event. There have been other wonderful social events and fundraisers, including a dinner in January, and these have enabled the recent addition of senior eight boys’ and girls’ boats. The school is working hard to spread the oars wider to grow participation across its local community, including working with Chiswick Senior to get its boys and girls onto the water. Building a boat club from scratch and making rowing part of PE choices has opened pupils’ eyes to broader sporting possibilities. “We’ve always said we don’t see this as the ceiling of their achievement. We want them to be successful after Kew House and be representatives of the sport and Kew House School Boat Club,” says Paddy Graham. Recently, the school had its first try out of a junior girl as a potential for Team GB – KHSBC is aiming high for club and school. “Kew House School boys and girls would love nothing more than to qualify for Henley Royal Regatta. That’s their aim, they are gunning for it and one day they will do it.”

Community MODEL The Chaplain of Hurst College on fostering a sense of belonging across the whole school community

L

ife for our young people is becoming increasingly complicated. Developing technology has had significant benefits in society at large, and particularly education, not least because it has enabled new forms of community to take shape. It also poses real challenges for our young people as they develop as members of diverse groups. One of the key aims at Hurst is to provide pupils with an awareness of the world in which they live and how they can become valuable contributors to the communities in which they belong. Apart from teaching pupils how to be safe in their environment, we aspire to foster a sense of belonging that shapes their developing identities. Our hope is that, by the time they leave as young adults, they know who they are, what their values are, and are equipped to embark on their further journey in life. We are acutely aware that the time children and teenagers spend at school will be one of the most important formational experiences. Therefore, we model those values and instil an awareness of belonging and commitment. Members of staff – teaching and support teams – are encouraged to see Hurst not just as a workplace, but as a community. The staff dining hall and common room are open to all and provide an opportunity to meet. Outside of work, staff participate in social activities. Many colleagues cycle or run together and, with others, support local events such as the Brighton and Mid Sussex marathons.

“We are acutely aware that the time children spend at school will be one of the most important formational experiences” Pupil wellbeing is at the centre of everything we do, with the house system as a pastoral focal point. Each student belongs to a house which becomes their home for the time they are at school. In this way, they are not only supported by their house parents and tutors but also by their peers. Each house has a small group of student guardians who are a listening ear and lead on wellbeing initiatives. The role has become increasingly important in all year groups from the Junior Prep School all the way through Senior School and Sixth Form. Students are not only encouraged to play a part in the Hurst community, but also within the local community. One example is the Reading Buddies programme. One afternoon a week, 50 students (aged 16 and 17) visit local primary schools to help children develop their reading skills. In this way, our

pupils participate in the life of the local community and develop relationships with children from a variety of backgrounds. Another example is Community Action Day, when students and staff demonstrate the Hurst ethos of ‘Work hard, do good and engage’ by clearing gardens and grounds at sports clubs, Scout halls and churches. Throughout the year, there are occasions when current and former pupils, staff and parents interact, making our community truly inter-generational. Through all these opportunities, we endeavour to provide each member of the Hurst community with a sense of belonging and purpose. We also hope that these opportunities inspire our pupils to achieve their personal bests and to enable others to do so as well.

Story time Introducing Hector's Post, a range of personalised books to inspire positivity in children

he new age of personalised children's books has arrived. These wonderful stories created by wife and husband team Kate and Andy, combine brilliantly fun and intricate oldfashioned watercolour artwork with engaging stories brimful of adventure. And best of all, they teach little ones the values we all cherish most dearly – those of kindness and courage, honesty and gratitude. The first seeds were planted during the earliest lockdown of 2020 when the pair were confined to a tiny London apartment. Both of them had a passion for supporting children's mental health and Kate can trace her first interest in mindfulness back to her own school days. It was only natural to combine this passion with their shared love of old-fashioned children’s books, especially the timeless classics of Wind in the Willows and Winnie the Pooh.

As the world hit pause for the lockdowns, the pair were presented with the perfect opportunity to hatch plots and create characters. So arrived the Hector’s Post whimsical tales of friendship, discovery and adventure. But their plan was to make something bigger. What they really wanted was to pack these short stories with the themes of mindfulness and positive thinking. So the books aim to create a culture that supports, encourages, and helps children navigate through this ever-evolving world. The idea to personalise the books came fairly naturally, as there is no better way for a child to learn and understand values or coping mechanisms than from a first-person perspective. When a child is in the adventure then they are truly empowered by reading about how they taught their new friend about kindness, happiness, honesty or courage. Although still a significant amount of money, the shared ownership scheme meant the couple were able to buy a quality home in a desirable

location that may not have been possible otherwise. By purchasing a percentage of the property, typically between 25 per cent and 75 per cent, and renting the remainder, shared ownership opens the door to people who might not otherwise be able to buy a home on the open market. There will always be a demand to live in London, and there will always be hurdles to overcome when searching for the perfect property in the highly competitive capital. However, shared ownership is continuing to support new homeowners and re-sizers alike, accomplishing their goal of owning their own home.
