iscussing rubbish will never be glamorous. But waste and recycling is something everybody has to contend with. Even Heidi Klum, no doubt, who may be one of the world's most beautiful women – and most highly-paid models – but as a mother-of-four, she prides herself on her domesticity. Not that we discussed rubbish when we met, of course, though her notable business acumen certainly wouldn't allow much waste in her enterprises, the most recent of which is swimwear. The Heidi Klum bikini is one you'll be seeing on beaches all over the globe from now on, from St Barts to Bondi, possibly even modelled by Klum herself, who is the ultimate beach babe. We discussed fabric and cut with her, mostly, while marvelling at her beauty, charisma and humour. Another stylish

7 CHIS_Aug16_EDS_LETTER 2.indd 7

woman featuring this month is Chiswick-based Marthe Armitage, who may be less starry than Klum, but has been designing and printing beautiful and much-imitated wallpapers from her W4 studio for many years. She reveals some of her pattern inspirations on page 62. And then we meet Antony and Richard Joseph, whose kitchenware brand Joseph Joseph has revolutionised the industry with its stylish and brightly coloured products. They even make rubbish glamorous, and their new range of recycling bins are designed to address the different demands of every London borough, while looking as stylish as possible in the kitchen. Enjoy August. ◆

I

t was 40 years ago that Bugsy Malone, one of the strangest children’s films ever, was released – and now London is revisiting the summer of 1976 with a special event dedicated to Alan Parker’s classic film. Not only is the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith reviving last year’s sell-out production – a rare occurrence thanks to Parker’s reluctance to approve stage versions – but the British Academy

of Film and Television Arts has announced a public exhibition and events programme this summer at its central London headquarters, BAFTA 195 Piccadilly, entitled ‘40 Years of Bugsy Malone’. From 5 to 7 August, ‘40 Years of Bugsy Malone’ will see BAFTA’s Piccadilly home transformed into a den of

There will also be ticketed film screenings and a Fat Sam’s area with a dressing-up box, photo booth, a real splurge gun for splurging and a speakeasy bar. The one remaining original

splurge gun will be on display in the exhibition. Sir Alan Parker says: “I’m always astounded at the ‘legs’ of Bugsy Malone. Hard to think that what started out as a story that I made up for my children on long car journeys has lasted this long, so I’m extra grateful to BAFTA for celebrating the 40th anniversary of its release.” Kate Farrell, BAFTA’s Exhibitions Manager, said: “BAFTA’s Bugsy birthday bash will offer a memorable experience in London for all ages this summer, presenting three days of activities, events and exhibition content celebrating the magic of this enduring film that continues to spark joy in children and adults alike.” The birthday celebration reflects the way in which the history and success of Bugsy Malone has been recognised by BAFTA, with the film winning multiple awards. ◆ bafta.org Bugsy Malone runs at the Lyric Hammersmith until 4 September; lyric.co.uk

MY KEW

As Sarah Raven prepares to headline at Write on Kew, she shares her love for Kew Gardens I n t e r v i e w r e p r o d u c e d c o u r t e s y o f t h e k e w m ag a z i n e

arah Raven runs a gardening and cookery school at Perch Hill, Sussex, as well as an online nursery. She will be headlining at Kew’s literary festival, Write on Kew, in September, talking about her latest book, Good Good Food. Here she tells us why she loves and supports Kew Gardens. Can you remember your first visit to Kew and what you saw? SR: I visited with my botanist father, John Raven, when I was a child, although I don’t clearly remember those times. However, I do recall going into Kew’s incredible Library and Herbarium, where he sent many plants for identification. I loved opening the huge, wide drawers full of pressed plants that had been collected from around the world and sent in by people like my dad and many others before and after him. There’s something so resonant about pressed flowers – their shapes and forms – preserved for centuries on white paper. What’s your favourite thing to do when you visit the Gardens?

AFTER AN HOUR

in one of the glass houses, you FEEL LIKE YOU'VE HAD a quick trip to the rainforest SR: I love the glasshouses full of orchids and other tropical plants – they’re so exciting, particularly in the winter. When everything is drab and grey outside, you walk into an exotic world of vast leaves,

insect-eating carnivorous plants, and trees dripping with brilliant, butterflyimitating orchids. It’s so good walking from the cold air outside into the hot humidity. I love the way it catches you in the back of the throat – all the heady, peaty smells of a completely different sort of flora to the winter gardens outside. After an hour in one of the glasshouses you feel like you’ve been on holiday to Indonesia or Malaysia or had a quick trip to the rainforest. Have you visited behind the scenes – and what did you discover? SR: About 10 years ago I visited Kew’s Jodrell Laboratory to look at its research into plant therapies and medicine. As a former doctor who loves plants and growing things, I’ve always liked the idea of natural, traditional remedies, many of which are proving to be based in science and in historical plant knowledge, rather than just being old wives’ tales or hocus-pocus witchery. Kew’s work on things like goose-grass poultices for skin healing was fascinating, and it was particularly relevant to me at the time. My brother was ill and undergoing radiotherapy, the main side effect of

is gardening, combining great plant knowledge, strong horticultural skills, innovative talent and originality. Kew plays such an important role in this. You are coming to Write on Kew this September to talk about your new book. What’s it about? SR: I want every dish I eat to look good, be good to eat and do me good. My new book, Good Good Food, is about just this. It’s about healthy food – what to eat and how to cook for deliciousness and health. It includes more than 100 food biographies, outlining which are the good ingredients and why, as well as more than 250 recipes. I used to be a doctor and this book brings together my interest in diet and health, which is something I’ve been thinking about now for over 30 years. u

which was skin lesions, which were slow to heal. The goose-grass therapy was still undergoing trials when I visited, but is now becoming mainstream in oncology departments.

What inspires you to support Kew and its work? SR: I have known several people who have recently trained at Kew on one of the horticultural courses. It’s vitally important that there are good and rigorous courses for horticulturists all around the country. We need as many people as possible to continue to contribute to the creative world that

COSTUME DRAMA Model and designer Heidi Klum has launched her own brand of swimwear. Absolutely meets her Interview Pendle Harte

H

eidi Klum is sitting under a spotlight in the Soho Hotel surrounded by several rails full of bikinis. She is in London – briefly – to launch Heidi Klum Swim, an extension of her Heidi Klum Intimates brand, and she is radiating enthusiasm. In fact she is simply radiating – her big smile, open face and winning charm make her instantly likeable. Not for Heidi the frosty princess manner. Her entourage, however, is a different story. We have been firmly instructed not to veer the slightest bit away from the subject we are here to discuss, which is her new swimwear range. Klum may be German by birth, and broadcast weekly on German television’s huge hit Germany’s Next Top Model, but she lives and works in LA and sounds almost entirely American, apart from occasional turns of phrase. When she says swimwear, she means bikinis – and by that she really means bikini bottoms,

because she herself has little interest in wearing a top part. But swimwear, as Klum discovered, is almost as technical as lingerie, which she has been designing for some time. ‘Yes, a bra is just like a phone! There’s so much technology. Whether it’s a flexible underwire or a half underwire, there’s always a new invention. And the pads too. Did you know we make memory foam bras?’ So for the new swimwear collection, the technical details were just as important as the design. Starting with the hardwear, which Klum has strong opinions about: it mustn’t rust, or be too brash. ‘Nobody wants a huge H on their back!’ And the fabric has to be just right. ‘You need to make sure they don’t fall off or start getting weird when they’re wet. They all have to be tested.’ Klum is one of the world’s highest earning models. Despite having featured on the covers of several editions of Vogue and worked as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, she hasn’t forgotten that she started out as a catalogue model. ‘People used to say

FASHION / PROFILE

I’d never be anything else, so when I got my first French Vogue cover it made me feel an inch taller.’ She counts working with photographer Peter Lindbergh among her career highs, and cites ‘jobs that make me overcome my fears’ as her favourites. ‘When I shoot Germany’s Next Top Model it’s a live show in an arena full of 15,000 people and I have to talk for three hours. It’s terrifying. I’m trying to have fun but I’m scared – we have people like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga sitting on the sofa and I have to interview them and I have people shouting in my ear about commercial breaks, and millions of people watching at home. It’s nerve-wracking.’ The show is filmed in LA, as a concession to Klum’s family commitments; she has four children at school there. ‘So I go to Germany and cast the girls, then I take them to Los Angeles and film it there and I’m home at the end of the day.’

Casting young models must be a tough job. Can she tell immediately who’s in and who’s out? ‘ Yes, you can see who’s got it. But even though there are so many beautiful girls, not all of them can perform in front of a camera or step into a role. You have to be able to perform.’ It’s a well-trodden path from modeling to designing, but Klum is careful not to design just with herself in mind. ‘If I did it would probably be just bottoms, not tops! I mean I’m more of an itsy bity teeny weeny girl myself and my top comes off on the beach. I’m not a big fan of tan lines. So I try to think about the girl who wants more coverage. I know that a lot of girls like push-up – I don’t like that, but I have to think about what other girls want to wear. And I have the hardest time with one-pieces, because I never wear those myself.’ With 2,000 stockists around the world, there are also the different markets to consider. ‘When you go to the

25 NH_June16_HEIDI KLUM.indd 25

beach in Australia it’s a very different look from anywhere else. Everyone’s in long sleeves and hats with flaps down the back – and then in St Barts everyone has hardly anything on.’ On the beach, of course, Klum wears her own designs – ‘I like the tropical, fun ones because I’m often on an island, shooting something’ – and off the beach, she likes to ‘have fun with fashion’. Though as she admits, this means that ‘people sometimes hammer me for my choices. I wore a big Zac Posen gown to collect my Bambi award and I felt like Grace Kelly.’ But usually she likes to wear pieces by the Olsen twins – ‘they do a great job, they go to the fabric shows, just like how I do my stuff.’ ◆ Heidi Klum Swim is available at House of Fraser, John Lewis and online at Figleaves and ASOS as well as at select boutiques nationwide. Prices range from £43-£145

hiswick’s new outpost of Shavata, Knightsbridge’s popular eyebrow expert, is bright, fresh and professional. Inside it’s busy, with plenty of stations to welcome walk-ins as well as appointments, and on the wall, a confidently printed slogan catches your eye immediately. Its wise words – “brows are sisters, not twins” – express a philosophy that's immediately reassuring. Anyone who considers their non-identical eyebrows to be flawed will be cheered to discover that in brow lore, a lack of symmetry is not only to be expected, but actively celebrated. At Shavata, my neglected brows are threaded into nigh-twins without going against their grain. Swift, professional strokes and a gentle approach characterise the Shavata approach, which believes that eyebrows should relate to a face as a frame to an artwork, by complementing, not distracting from. With 25 years’ experience in the beauty industry, Shavata Singh is recognised as an authority on eyebrows and her studios can be found in branches of House of Fraser all over the UK. Having your brows tended to, she believes, is as effective as a mini-facelift. And it’s certainly true for me – a brief tint and reshape and my closely-related brows look welldefined while subtly improving my general appearance. Thank you Shavata –and welcome to Chiswick. ◆ ● S H AVATA B R OWS A N D B E AU T Y 274 Chiswick High Road, W4; 020 3026 5520 shavata.co.uk

TESTOSTERONE LEVELS can play HAVOC with the SKIN

SKIN DEEP Is stress fuelling adult acne? West London Dermatology thinks so

A

dults over 35 are reporting more stubborn and persistent acne symptoms, and acne in general is on the rise. According to some estimates, 48% of European women aged 35-49 are suffering from this problematic condition. The main problem, as with all acne problems, is the effect of hormones on the skin. For women this can include contraceptive pills, polycystic ovaries, perimenopause, menopause in fact, anything gynaecological.

In today's society, lifestyle can also be a big issue. We work longer hours, juggling work and families, and as a result finding time to relax can feel like an impossibility. When we're subject to increased stress, our adrenal glands respond by releasing cortisol to help us cope and respond to the perceived threat. Alongside the release of cortisone the adrenal glands also release small amounts of testosterone, both in men and women. In women this can mark a significant increase in their generally low levels of male hormones. Although higher testosterone levels are great for

39 Chis_Aug2016_SlimGym.indd 39

responding to modern living, they can play havoc with the skin by increasing oil production and making breakouts more common. Sometimes it can be hard to pinpoint whether it’s the underlying cause (stress) or the things you do in response to stress. When under psychological or physical stress, people tend to display other stress-related behaviours such as not eating or sleeping well, drinking more alcohol, smoking, taking less time to exercise and relax - and neglecting their skin. It is therefore vital to look after ourselves when under stress and recognise that we need to maintain a healthy balanced diet, take exercise and find time to relax. This will help us manage our stress response. If stress influences your skin, it is vitally important to maintain a good skin care routine to counteract the increased production of oil and its effects on the skin. Using cosmeceutical grade products containing salicylic, glycolic, green tea and benzoyl peroxide can help maintain skin clarity and clear acne. West London Dermatology stocks the Skinova Cosmeceutical range of medical grade skincare formulated by a US dermatologist and containing strong active ingredients without the harsh preservatives and parabens found in other ranges. The clinic offers expert advice from some of the UKs leading dermatologists and nutritionists along with many options to treat acne from skincare to peels to lasers. ď ľ For more information visit dermclinic.co.uk or call to book a consultation on 020 8742 2204

FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEW The PERFECT DESTINATION for tasteful AL FRESCO DINING in summer

The Brackenbury Elegant neighbourhood dining in Hammersmith

cuts through it and is served with celeriac rémoulade, tagliatelle alla cacciatore and lightly toasted sourdough. With the starter setting the standards for the main course, I stick with the seafood – roast Dover sole with seaweed butter and samphire – while my dinner date chooses the meat option, an onglet steak, which is recommended mediumrare. The onglet, we are told, is farmed for its intense flavour and arrives rosy pink inside, accompanied by frites, salad and bearnaise sauce. The fish is light, fluffy and pulls off the bone with ease. Something sweet to finish. We go for the chocolate, hazelnut and espresso torte, a multilayered marriage of mousse, cake and biscuit base with hints of coffee. Later, we select the savory option too – cheeses from Mons Cheesemonger. I am asked my cheese preferences and the chef prepares a unique selection to satisfy my palette: Coeur de Bergère, Tomme Du Mont Pilat and Beaufort. The Brackenbury is quiet, tranquil, and the perfect destination for tasteful al fresco dining in the summer months. The menu changes on a daily basis, making the most of the seasonal specials - so we’ll definitely be back again soon. u

T

he Brackenbury is nestled between Hammersmith and Shepherd’s Bush on the quiet and tranquil Brackenbury Road. The restaurant is discreet, incredibly elegant and a real neighbourhood gem, as locals fill up the tables inside. It’s fairly small with simple yet stylish decor, set on two levels with a snug dining area to the rear. On our visit, the sun is shining so we are seated on the front patio, a pleasant oasis decorated with plants and trees. The patio doors are opened wide, creating an inclusive feel and linking us with the restaurant’s vibe.

The white-table cloth approach sets the tone for the fine dining to follow, and we feel like we’ve been whisked away to a stylish bistro in France. The menu is a fairly small; a seasonal offering with a selection of simple, French-inspired dishes, paired and prepared with quality ingredients in mind. I opt for Cornish Assured oysters while my companion goes for pork, prune and pistachio terrine. The oysters are fresh and soft inside, and the salt sharpens my tastebuds. They are perfectly chilled, sitting on a bed of ice and served with a slice of lemon for a zingy punch. The terrine is packed with flavours. It’s fresh, delicate as the knife

> THE REAL ITALY: DISCOVERING UMBRIA

p. 52

FOODIE HEAVEN What Tuscany has lost to mass tourism, Umbria retains, so it's calmer, quieter and more rustic than its more internationally acclaimed neighbour. Stephanie King discovers the authentic Italian experience.

UMBRIAN sun Forget Tuscany. For the uncommercial Italian experience, venture to Umbria and unearth its untouched beauty Wo r d s S t e p h a n i e K i n g

O

ften those in search of a provincial Italian escape will yearn for Tuscany – its rolling hills, cypress trees and incomparably good food and wine a siren call for the inner epicurean. But with Tuscany becoming increasingly littered with tourists, there is an idyllic alternative: Umbria. As a result of popular Tuscany drawing the crowds, Umbria has preserved its rustic essence. But with a lesser-known location comes the apprehension of where to stay, and more importantly, what to do. So, where to for accommodation? Simple: Tenuta di Murlo.

WHERE TO STAY

T

wo hours’ drive from Rome Fiumicino airport are Tenuta di Murlo’s private grounds, which stretch thousands of hectares and have hosted famous visitors including Hugh Grant, Elton John, Colin Firth, George Lucas, Stephen Fry and Ralph Fiennes. Murlo’s mountainous ranges, covered in olive groves and oak forests, rivers, lakes and fields are bursting with wildlife and breathtakingly picturesque. And then you get to your villa. Or cottage. Either option is boutique travelling at its best.

As a result of TUSCANY drawing the crowds, UMBRIA has preserved its ESSENCE Among the five villas and two cottages Murlo’s service is unfailingly five star. Sure, it’s more of a self-contained set-up rather than a hotel (although plans are already underway for a Four Seasons development), but the home-style living with hotel-like amenities complements the estate’s natural surrounds, with more than enough character to satiate your appetite for Italian grandeur. Medieval castle views, anyone? Check. How about infinity pools? Or fully equipped contemporary kitchens? Double check. Murlo’s a contemporary blend of modern fixtures and furnishings with traditional architecture dating back to the 14th century. At Villa Santa Croce you also benefit from 360-degree views in a stately three bedroom home atop Monte Santa Croce. With breakfast, dinner and barbecue terraces, a huge outdoor living area and sympathetically landscaped gardens

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST at said Antognolla Golf Course or Perugia Golf Course, which is only 20 minutes’ drive from Murlo. Alternatively, explore the vast Estate’s mountains, valleys and farmsteads with a hike and look forward to stunning sights, namely Lake Trasimene. If hiking doesn’t take your fancy, perhaps a safari of the local cashmere producers is more your kind of adventure. Be guided around the Umbrian Cashmere Road to Brunello Cucinelli’s flagship boutique in Solomeo, treat yourself at Lamberto Losani’s warehouse, and go inside Rocco Ragni’s Dominican monastery studio.

(replete with hammock), relaxing will not be difficult. Villa Caminata comprises five bedrooms with a separate one-bedroom cottage and has over 3,000 blooms throughout the year. Accommodating up to 12 people, it’s the most traditional in terms of décor and is terrific for large groups with again, terraces aplenty for celebrating or feasting. Villa Torre is a converted medieval defence tower and its roof terrace is a pretty terrific surprise, especially when accompanied by good company and wine. A dream for small families, it’s got two king-size bedrooms and one with two bunk beds, plus a lovely fireplace-fitted living room. Subtilia, however, is fantastic for large groups, considering its 18 guest capacity. There’s also a separate cottage by the pool, ideal for newlyweds, yet both 16th century properties are afforded direct views of Antognolla Castle and its championship golf course. Not forgetting San Savino, a four bedroom abode named after Saint Sabinus, Bishop of Spoleto, to whom the estate’s church (now sadly desecrated) was once dedicated. Fortunately, though, San Savino’s original terracotta floors and kitchen remain intact, with its wooden terrace serving as a brilliant observation deck. But a trip to Tenuta di Murlo is not all sitting and sipping wine while soaking in the atmosphere – there are ample activities to immerse yourself in too.

WHAT TO DO

Y

ou’re in Italy. So, it’s only right to start with the most basic fundament of Italian life: food. The tastiest dishes you will ever try in your life can be found at Il Caldaro, Murlo’s on-site restaurant. Showcasing local suppliers, the produce is phenomenal, and what they do with it even better. Do not leave without experiencing the Burrata. In nearby

Torgiano you can see the locals’ high-end interpretation of traditional rustic meals at Le 3 Vaselle. For those wanting to eat pasta they’ve made, in-villa cooking classes can be arranged with the estate’s professional chefs preparing a menu of dishes endemic to the area, such as Pumpkin, Sausage & Dill Tortelli and Vegetable Crêpe with Porcini Mushroom Sauce. If you want to take this a step further, you can personally ‘shop’ for your ingredients by hunting wild boar, pheasant, hare, fox and partridge, or foraging for truffles and wild asparagus. To find the perfect wine to pair with your creations, beeline to Lungarotti Winery. At the family-run vineyard there’s a plethora of certified white and red varieties, from light, crisp Pinot Grigios, Chardonnays and Trebbianos to full-bodied Sangoiveses, Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots and Rubsecos. But if you simply can’t choose, try them all at Lungarotti’s wine tasting, where you can tour the winery and discover the different drops from the owners themselves. Work off the calories with a game of golf

55 Chis_Aug16_Travel_UMBRIA_R.indd 55

Nearby Assisi, the birth place of Saint Francis, is pretty special and popular owing to its exquisite churches and sensational frescos to rival those in the Sistine Chapel. After soaking in Umbria’s fantastic culture, unwind in your villa with spa and beauty treatments organised by Murlo’s concierge service. Or have them simply make life easier by performing any errands you need to run or scheduling any activities you’d like to try. When it comes to experiencing Umbria through Tenuta di Murlo’s incredible facilities, you’ll quickly learn that anything is possible. u

 Tenuta di Murlo Villas start from €2,900/week; apartments from €1,400/week; cottages from €1,200/per week. All accommodation is inclusive of daily housekeeping, a welcome pack, bathroom amenities and utilities, full day concierge service, a 30% discount on Antognolla Golf Green fees, and meal specials at Il Caldaro restaurant. PAPER CHASE In her Chiswick studio, wallpaper designer Marthe Armitage reveals the methods behind her beautiful hand-painted designs Wo r d s p e a r l b oy d

ABSOLUTELY: Can you tell us how about how you began your career? MA: I still call myself an artist. I began my career as a painter. I went to Chelsea School of Art. We had won the war and it was a wonderful time to be there because all those great painters, like Picasso and Matisse, were still alive and working. Soon after I left art school I got married had children and moved to India for two years. After they were born it became almost impossible to paint but I didn’t stop being creative. I had done a bit of lino cutting and I had observed fabric printing at the art school. The thought came to me that I had always been interested in repeat pattern. I realised I could make my own blocks and print, even from home. ABS: How did your time in India affect your work? MA: When my first child was only two months we left for India. We spent two years there as my husband was an architect designing public buildings in the Punjab. In evenings we would wander down to the bazaar where you would find men printing bedspreads on long tables in the open air. Seeing them at work, printing

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

NH_July16_MARTHE ARMITAGE.indd 62

in their hit and miss way, made me realise that you could do things yourself. I would only need the block, some colour and paper and I’d be away. Coming back to London, I found that I could do this when the children were at school. The first paper I created was for our own house and it looked good – so I carried on and made more prints.

I find it TERRIBLY IMPORTANT to have ACCURATE INFORMATION for my DRAWING

ABS: How did you create your first wallpapers? What was the process? MA: I found the one part of the house that wasn’t used for anything else, which was the landing and made a very makeshift studio. At the local hardware store I bought lino, lining paper, paint and a small roller. I put the paper on the floor and then had to stand on the block to create pressure to make the print. It was a very haphazard process but I liked the effect and created a few designs. Eventually a friend convinced me it was time to get my own press. ABS: Tell us about your press and how it developed your work. MA: My printer friend decided that we should go to a large second-hand printing warehouse in Brixton, so off we went.

62 05/07/2016 12:46

HOMES & INTERIORS / Q&A It was a vast place with machines as big as houses but hidden in the corner there was this small unloved proofing press. I looked at it and said ‘well I think that will do.’ The next thing, of course, was the paper. I managed to find half a tonne of the right paper and that’s how it all began. It wasn’t planned really; somehow it just fell into place. ABS: Can you tell us about the process of creating a wallpaper design? MA: First of all, plants are my vital source as they so effortlessly turn into a repeat – they flow over the walls and there is an endless variety that you can use. Walking round people’s front gardens I sometimes see a plant that will go into a pattern and sketch it straight away. For me, the core of all visual art is

I like to HAVE THE SUBJECT in front of ME, ESPECIALLY

with plants

idea of gardens so then it was plain sailing. Henry James is a writer I’m very fond of and he happened to say that the two happiest words in the English language were ‘summer afternoon.’ I wanted to capture a perfect English summer afternoon. The garden needed to feel alive. I added the children having a croquet match, a gardener observing the scene and a little girl showing him how she can dance. There are also some cheeky foxes. My ideal garden has statuary in it and so I took inspiration from Chiswick House very near my home and studio. The lions were inspired by the ones there. As always, taking inspiration from the plants was absolutely key. You’ll find a tomato plant, pears, roses, blackcurrant, even buzzing bees to represent the honey in Red Roses. I loved drawing the bees. ◆

drawing. I like to have the subject in front of me, especially with plants. In the winter I often use books and in the summer, I draw in front of the plants themselves. I find it terribly important to have very accurate information for my drawing. To design a repeat pattern, I make a small grid of four sections and then trace everything onto it. You see what space you have, join it up and create a rhythm in the design. It’s always space filling with my design. Then I trace it onto a piece of lino and just start cutting. Once you’ve cut it it’s irreversible. ABS:What was the inspiration behind your design for Jo Malone London? MA: The Jo Malone London creative team came to see me and we had a great discussion. We thought about the river, about plants and planting and then gardens. Everybody was happy with the

Design Duo Joseph Joseph’s technicolour kitchen equipment has shaken up the British worktop. Absolutely meets the founding twin brothers, Antony and Richard Joseph Wo r d s P e a r l B oy d

Q. It all started with a chopping board. How did it come about? A. Design has always been in our blood. We grew up in a family manufacturing business and spent summers as kids designing new products in our shed at home. In fact, we both started out on career paths in product design, and came together in 2003 to design and sell our own collection of innovative products. Our approach was, and still is, all about solving everyday problems through intelligent product design. Basing our brand on a simple idea that we could improve everyday items or solve everyday problems with intelligent design is really what drives us forward.

bowl set which is a great space saving storage solution. Totem, the waste and recycling bin, is another one we’re extremely proud of, but that was also the hardest to get right. It was a departure from what we had done before and was our biggest launch to date so it took a lot of development time.

Q. Can you define your aesthetic? A. Functional ideas are the core of what we do. We believe if you’re going to take the effort to design a product from the start there’s a great opportunity to design it with a considered aesthetic.

Q. Your products are about solving kitchen problems that we didn’t know we had. How do you identify what to address? A. It’s different with each product. Sometimes we’ll identify a problem through testing and other times it’ll be noticing an everyday problem we’ve come across ourselves and we’ll know exactly what we want to create the solution. We build lots of prototypes and test them thoroughly to make sure our ideas work.

Q. You have launched a lot of recycling-related products. Was that due to demand? Or what made you think of it? A. It was through extensive research. We found that each council has different recycling requirements, especially in London, so from personal experience we knew that there wasn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. And with storage space being a problem in most kitchens we recognised the need to combine waste and offer recycling options in one space-saving unit.

Q. If good design is about combining practicality with beauty, your products certainly fit. Which ones are you most proud of, and which ones have been hardest to get right? A. We’re probably most proud of our first award-winning product, the Chop2Pot; our first folding chopping board but also our Nest 9 stacking

a Coqueta was founded by Spanish native (and London resident) Celia Munoz in 2012, and the brand's beautiful childrenswear is still designed in London and carefully crafted in Spain. The trademark style is a kind of Western European classicism, with vintage-inspired outfits – they make everything from rompers and party dresses to knitwear, swimwear and shoes – that wouldn't look out of place on Prince George and Princess Charlotte (or indeed their greatgrandparents, once upon a time). For all their old-school charm, however, the clothes remain resolutely versatile and practical: no unnecessary flounce or frippery here. Everything is neatly and charmingly assembled, and in the best possible taste. Our pick for the summer is this cute 'Daroca' bonnet in a sharp monochrome check: it looks stylish enough on its own, but imagine it topping a cherub face with a mop of golden curls. 

Not making the grade The exam regulator’s clamp down on appeals has not only angered heads but could have far-reaching consquences for this year’s students Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e

Y

our precious progeny tears open this month’s long-awaited exam results only to withdraw in disappointment. The yearned-for grade hasn’t been achieved, despite A* expectations. So you appeal, right? Well, no, actually, not since Ofqual decided earlier in the summer – when your darling was already knee-deep in their exams – to make it harder to get exam papers re-graded. In a move fiercely criticised by many heads and teachers, the exams board regulator said it would introduce a tougher system to make it harder for some pupils to get “a second bite of the cherry”. This follows a substantial increase in the number of re-marks being requested by schools – often the comparatively time-rich, better resourced private ones – growing from around 190,000 challenges in 2010 to more than 460,000 appeals lodged last summer. More than 90,000 grades were changed after appeals by schools in 2015. Currently exam boards are able to change marks or grades following an appeal if there are discrepancies between markers. But under the new system, a change to a mark will only occur if it is found a ‘clear marking error’ has been made. Ofqual has said this will lead to a fairer system, after it was discovered that some original marks were being overturned despite being what Ofqual describes as “perfectly appropriate”. Ofqual said this was disadvantaging pupils who do not challenge their results. But critics from all across the education spectrum say that Ofqual have failed to sort out the root problem which is an exam system that isn’t fit for purpose. Ann Mroz, editor of the Times Educational Supplement, said: “Instead of doing the difficult job and addressing the

There’s no doubt OFQUAL has made things FAIRER. NOW EVERYONE

is screwed

problems that were causing the grades to be questioned in the first place, Ofqual went for the quick fix and made it harder for all schools to appeal. There’s no doubt it has made things fairer, now everyone is screwed.” Peter Hamilton, Chair of the Headmaster’s Conference Academic Policy Committee and Headmaster of The Haberdasher’s Aske’s Boys’ School, said: “This is quite simply a cynical and undemocratic response to a serious problem which affects young people’s hopes and futures…. Ofqual says its

71 Chis_August2016_EDUCATION_R.indd 71

reforms will prevent pupils from getting a second bite of the cherry, because that’s not fair on the ones who don’t appeal. Hold on. Isn’t that like saying a customer who has been charged the wrong price shouldn’t be charged the right price because other haven’t thought to ask for their refund? … No fair deal here. It doesn’t matter if the pupil is on the C/D borderline at GCSE or A*/A at A-Level. Inaccuracies have major life consequences. Schools are angry that the reforms were announced not only as exams began but as they broke up for half term. “The first we knew about it was when journalists contacted us,” said Hamilton. There is also the key issue of subjects where there isn’t a clear right or wrong answer and how these fit into Ofqual’s ‘clear marking error’ criteria. Subjects such as English and the humanities – often the most appealed papers - often rely on long-form essay responses that are subjectively marked. The Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference – the association of the UK’s leading 275 independent schools – and the school leaders’ union the NAHT, recommended a ‘double blind’ marking system – bringing in a trained examiner to re-mark an exam paper from scratch. “This is clearly what should have happened,” said Hamilton. But “no deal”. Suzanne O’Farrell, curriculum and assessment specialist at the Association of School and College Leaders, said: “Many people believe that the initial quality of marking is not always up to scratch in the first place. There remains an underlying problem in that the system is still something of a cottage industry in which teachers mark huge numbers of scripts in their spare time for little pay. It needs to be better resourced and better structured. The most important thing is to have a system that gets marks right first time.”u

ollowing the outcome of Brexit, there is a great deal of speculation as to what will happen with the property market, both locally and generally. If there is one thing that is certain, it is that people will always need somewhere to live and desirable areas such as Brook Green and Brackenbury Village will continue to be sought after despite the market conditions. Having worked in the area for almost 20 years, I have seen the market change a lot and I am well placed to advise as to how best to deal with whatever may lay ahead for us in the future. u

There are so many good schools in Ealing, however one that instantly springs to my mind is Montpelier Primary School. In its last Ofsted inspection, it was found to be outstanding in all areas. WHAT TO DO ON A RAINY DAY:

Christopher joined Savills in 1996. His knowledge and track record in the area is second to none, and living locally, he has gained a fantastic insight from a resident’s point of view. On Sunday mornings, he coaches some of the younger players at Wasps FC Rugby. u

This is my tenth year with Savills having started my career in the Exeter office before moving to London and discovering lettings in Chiswick in 2007. I find Chiswick such a friendly area with so much charm and I gain great pleasure from finding tenants for our landlords. u

I started out in Brook Green over six years ago and moved to Savills in 2014. There is nothing better than having both a happy landlord and tenant throughout a tenancy. I enjoy the pubs along the river and can be found watching Harlequins Rugby Club at The Stoop. u

Natalie has worked in agency in London for seven years and is passionate about the market in west London and especially loves the interaction with people and helping them find their new homes. When not working she enjoys volunteering locally for the Chiswick RNLI. u

One of the best restaurants in the area has got to be Santa Maria Pizzeria. It is located on St. Mary’s Road and serves traditional Neapolitan pizza. They are cooked in a wood fired oven and are truly delicious. SPORTS AND RECREATION:

There are lots of sports facilities in the area, but following a recent football knee injury, I’m currently swimming a lot at Gurnell Leisure Centre. u

ince I last appeared in Absolutely in October 2015, I have done it – I’ve moved house! Moving from my two bedroom flat in Chiswick, to a three bedroom house in South Acton, or what I affectionately refer to as ‘Chacton’ has been an enlightening experience. People say that estate agents are the worst buyers, and I have to agree with them. I tried to play the ‘game’ and started with a low offer, only for other buyers to become interested, and I ended up paying over the guide price, and probably over the odds, for a house which redefined that overused phrase 'in need of modernisation.' Not only did I overpay in competition, I moved in November, and in trying to track the market for this piece, you could argue that I bought right at the top. Do I care? Not really. Of course, it is fun to fuel a few jokes from my rival local agents, but my decision to buy the house was determined, other than by the wonderful Mrs Rollo, by a long term plan. Like most property transactions in this area, buyers’ emotions take over. In our

REBECCA NOONAN

Choose your estate agent wisely and be realistic with your asking price

case it was less of an issue of how much we were paying from an investment perspective, more of one that the property will enable us to create a long term family home. This perspective has almost been essential to adopt in what has been a challenging market in 2016. This has been further complicated by the fact that at the time of writing the country has just voted to leave the EU. The coming weeks will undoubtedly see turmoil in the markets and in my view it will be a little while before we can really start to evaluate the immediate effects. However, the indecision is at least now over. Many people now armed with the result will make plans for the future with uncertainty removed. The fundamentals remain, people will continue

moving for a variety of reasons, expanding family, downsizing, job relocation, schooling, retirement, and a whole host of other motivations. Therefore, let my recent property purchase inspire you. What's better than owning a house in this area, with everything we all know is so great about it? The enviable Chiswick High Road with an abundance of shops and high quality restaurants, for both those on a budget or looking to blow it. Amazing transport links in and out of London. Schools! The choice of schools in the area is mind boggling. Who can forget the River Thames - such an iconic part of the west London landscape and being so close to it is lovely during the summer months. All these things continue to be a draw. Sellers, there are still some excellent prices being achieved. Choose your estate agent wisely and be realistic with your asking price. Do not be swayed by overeager and unrealistic appraisals. Buyers, there is a wider choice of property in the market today across all price ranges than there has been in a long time. Get yourself ready and don’t be afraid to jump in. u
