une. Officially the start of summer. Never mind the fact that June is often wetter and colder than October, June is when outdoor events appear in the calendar, and this year's schedule is an impressive one. As Chiswick House prepares to welcome Giffords Circus for a three-week residence with their new whip-crackin', horsewranglin', Western-themed show The Painted Wagon, I was lucky enough to speak to director Cal McCrystal (of One Man Two Guvnors fame, among other things) about the production – and his extreme enthusiasm for the world of Giffords is contagious. He has a particular affiliation for the Chiswick leg of the tour (the circus travels the UK from May to September) because of the audience – that's

us – who fully enter into the spirit of it by bringing along picnic tables complete with tablecloths, champagne buckets and elaborate feasts. Because everything Giffords do, they do in style – and their Chiswick audience appreciates it. Also at Chiswick House this month is the four-day Summer Session, while Kew Gardens unveils an intriguing hive installation and Syon Park hosts a foodie spectacular. And of course June brings the annual Artists at Home open studios trail, which this year features more than 70 artists. Read all about these events in this issue – we hope you enjoy it. ◆

ART of the AREA The annual Artists at Home weekend returns with more than 70 local artists contributing. Absolutely has a preview W o r d s N E I L M C K E LV I E

‘I

’m very excited about the prospects for this year. there’s more diversity than ever, with some really adventurous, cuttingedge artists joining us.’ Joanna Brendon, one of the organisers of the annual Artists at Home weekend, is chatting to me about the upcoming event, when 71 creative west Londoners working in every conceivable medium will be exhibiting in 57 home studios. ‘It’s always essential to have new blood coming through,’ Joanna continues. ‘We’ll have a men’s fashion designer and a video-maker showing – both firsts for us – as well as a wonderfully eclectic mix of painters, ceramicists, jewellers, textile designers, printmakers, sculptors, photographers and installation artists.’ The event that has become a popular fixture, attracting thousands of visitors to three square miles of Chiswick, Hammersmith, Acton and Shepherd’s Bush, was the brainchild of Mary Fedden and Julian Trevelyan in 1973. ‘Mary was an acclaimed painter and Julian a fine printmaker,’ says Joanna. ‘They lived on Hammersmith Mall and, with a couple of other riverside artists, they opened their studio doors to the public. It was

It’s like HOSTING a three-day PARTY for BOTH FRIENDS and strangers all small-scale and the council gave them a £5 grant to provide tea and biscuits. If that wasn’t actually the first Artists at Home scheme in the country, it was definitely one of the first.’ A painter herself, Joanna took over organisational duties – such as they were – in 2000. By this time a dozen or so artists were participating and the geographic boundaries had expanded slightly beyond the Thames, but it was still a scarcely promoted secret. ‘The publicity was simply a photocopied sheet with names and addresses on it,’ she smiles. ‘This was when Art Fairs and Open Studios were springing up everywhere. I thought it was time to develop the event and put it on a more professional footing.’ A mix of disciplines is often on show at one studio which has advantages for both artists and the public. For the latter, Sandi Friend it’s possible to see more work more quickly and, for the former, there’s a sense of shared enjoyment. Joanna explains: ‘I’m a painter and I’ll have a jeweller and a textile artist with me. It’s like hosting a three-day party for both friends and strangers. There’s a terrific energy.’ As the growing number of exhibitors and visitors confirms, Rebecca Harker

Artists at Home has gone from strength to strength. Joanna says: ‘It’s a fantastic way to look at and buy art in a relaxed environment. There’s absolutely no hardsell. For children, it’s a lovely introduction to art of all kinds. Secondly, it’s a rare chance to talk to artists about their inspiration and techniques – and that works both ways. We can road-test our art and speak to people face-to-face. And

15 CHIS_June16_ARTISTS AT HOME.indd 15

finally, Artists at Home allows the work to be viewed in a domestic setting. If you are considering buying, that’s particularly relevant. It’s an important purchase – not just financially (prices range from a few pounds to several thousands) – but because you’ll be looking at it every day. That’s why many artists agree to lend their work on approval, either overnight during the weekend or at the end of the show.’ Artists at Home 2016 will be held on Friday 17 June (6-9pm) and Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 June (11am-6pm). All studios will be open for all three days. nyone who dreams of running away with the circus is probably dreaming of Giffords. The romance of the tradition is alive and well at in the big top at this quirky, family-run outfit, whose nomadic troupe in its hand-painted wagons present a show that takes the traditional 19th century aesthetic and reinvents it for the 21st century. Touring the country’s village greens from May until September, its only London stop is at Chiswick House, where a three-week residence is set to sell out fast. ‘Come on down to the whip-crackin’, high-tumblin’, bottle-jugglin’, horsewranglin’, wagon-trundlin’, tent-raisin’, stake-drivin’, boot-stompin’, spur-janglin’, rain dancin’, gold-rushin’, bounty-huntin’, bugle-tootin’, banjo-pluckin’, Hell-raisin’, Thanks-givin’, Giffords Circus show!’ goes the promise.

SPUR-JANGLIN’, rain-dancin’, BANJOPLUCKIN’ show ‘It’s hard to define how, but Giffords is very different from other circuses,’ says Cal McCrystal, director of this year's production, The Painted Wagon. McCrystal may be most famous as the man behind acclaimed comedy in One Man Two Guvnors – the show that became the fastest-selling play in the history of theatre, in what became for him a career-defining moment – but he says that Giffords is the job that he feels most at home with, and the one that he gets the most praise for. ‘Even when

I’m at the RSC, in the beautiful Swan Theatre, people talk to me about Giffords. And when I was asked to talk about an Ayckbourn play with Libby Puves on the radio recently, the discussion quickly led to Giffords. It’s what everyone wants to talk about.’ The show has a very strong comedy thread to it, says McCrystal, which is central to its appeal. ‘The artwork and aesthetic is very traditional but we’re not making a replica of a traditional show; it’s a new version altogether. It’s very meta too, with lots of irony and humour. It feels warm and small with an air of experimental theatre.’ The theme for 2016 is Western (previous themes have included Greek mythology, Janis Joplin’s 1960s and War and Peace), which is particularly exciting for McCrystal. ‘It’s a world that everyone has familiarity with and we can twist it in our special way.’ In addition to the acclaimed and fundamental horses, performers will

include the Ethiopian troupe from last year’s show, back with a new Chinese Pole act (‘one of the hardest circus disciplines,’ says McCrystal) and promised stars of the old west include Miss Nancy TrotterLandry, El Gifford and Tweedy the Clown. Despite working mostly in theatre, McCrystal says he feels ‘priviliged’ to work in circus, which he loves for its ‘palette’ and because he has a selfconfessed short attention span. ‘You never need to watch something go on and on in the circus,’ he says. For many years, he was involved with the Cirque de Soleil, which in budget terms is at the very other end of the circus scale from

Giffords. ‘The last show I worked on for Cirque had a budget of £66 million – but when you ask whether it’s easier to be creative with too much money or not enough, you soon realize that it’s easier to be creative with less.’ Cirque de Soleil’s epic global productions ‘are so concerned with the packaging that something is lost,’ says McCrystal. ‘I’d love to see them do something more human.’ McCrystal’s comedy style is particularly human, very physical and ‘slightly deconstructed’. He loves ‘having fun with the convention of performance – I want the audience to know that they’re looking at actors playing characters, so that they’re aware of the real person, not just the flashy juggler with his act.’ So he designs all the comedy around the actual people, never in advance. And movement’s important too – he likes a lot of activity. ‘I never have people sitting on the sofa drinking tea.’ Set up by Oxford graduate Nell Gifford

and her husband Toti more than 10 years ago and based in the Cotswolds, Gifford’s has become the circuit’s most stylish and intelligent circus and its annual residence in Chiswick attracts what McCrystal calls ‘the Glyndebourne crowd’. ‘In Chiswick, people bring picnics,’ he says. ‘Last year, one family brought a table and dining chairs. It was the campest thing I’ve ever seen.’ u

here’s something seriously relaxing about The Park Club in Chiswick. The family club not only has tennis courts, 29-acres of park land and a swimming pool, but a very good MediSpa, too. So, if you’re in need of a holiday but can’t get away, The Park Club can save you. For true escapism, a full body massage really does the trick. Relieving stress and tension, this particular type of physical therapy is guaranteed to help you readjust and realign both your body and your mind. At The Park Club, the massages range from specialist sport massage to pre and post surgery and recovery work. Tailoring each treatment to the client, the expert therapists work hard to make sure each massage will help you feel better. Having upped my workouts ahead of summer, I needed a massage that would relieve tension in key areas like the spine and shoulders as well as my calves and triceps. Manipulating my muscle tissue and ligaments, the masseuse targeted all of my soft tissue with a good amount of pressure Ω not so hard that relaxation becomes impossible. After the massage was over I left the club feeling truly revived. ◆

s we grow older, we often notice changes in our skin resulting from a number of factors such as diet, lifestyle, heredity and personal habits. However, none has as big an impact as exposure to UV rays or sun damage. It is estimated that 80% of skin ageing is caused by exposure to the sun's rays. UV rays can break down the skin's ability to produce collagen and elastin, the two main building blocks of healthy, youthful skin. It can also cause pigmentary changes such as sun spots or age spots, leaving an uneven, dry complexion. Prevention is the best form of defense, and this is simple and relatively inexpensive. Reducing the length of exposure to direct sunlight and daily use of an SPF30 sunscreen can dramatically reduce the damage caused by the sun on our skin and help retain its healthy youthful appearance. For many, though, we have had years of direct exposure and now see the results with our skin age much higher than our actual age. Luckily the Skinova SPF30 Replenishing Sunscreen offered at West London Dermatology contains high levels of antioxidants and peptides to restore the skin and prevent further damage.

cience has developed many new technologies to address or reverse sun damage. In particular, laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems can stimulate the skin to increase production of collagen and also remove sun damage from the skin. At West London Dermatology the Regenlite laser is particularly popular as, in just two sessions, it can increase natural collagen production by 198%, restoring the skin’s thickness and smoothing out lines and wrinkles. It is what is known as a nonablative or non-burning laser, so there is no damage or down-time associated with the treatment and patients can return to normal activity immediately. Over the following 8-10 weeks patients will see a gradual improvement in skin texture and a reduction in lines and wrinkles. The IPL system also delivers light energy into the skin but targets the pigmentation or dark spots near the surface of the skin. In just two sessions it can clear small broken veins that cause redness as well as brown spots, leaving the skin with an even tone and more youthful appearance. Another component of skin health is Hyaluronic acid. This has been described as ‘The Fountain of Youth’. As we age, the body’s ability to produce Hyaluronic

Skin keeps

ITS PLUMPNESS

due to high

WATER CONTENT acid diminishes greatly. Fifty per cent of the body’s Hyaluronic acid is in the skin and it has a remarkable ability to retain water. In fact, it acts like a sponge holding over 1000 times its own weight in water. Youthful skin maintains its plumpness and luminosity due to high water content, so a reduction in the skin's ability to retain water will damage its appearance. Many skincare creams contain Hyaluronic acid and are applied to the skin to attempt to replenish its supply. The epidermis – the thin, protective layer at the skin surface – is designed to retain moisture in the skin but also acts as a barrier to keep substances out of the body. Most skincare creams cannot penetrate the epidermis and cannot therefore deliver active ingredients as they promise. One option used by doctors is to inject Hyaluronic acid into the skin to plump the area. These Dermal Fillers have become popular in recent years and can be very effective when applied correctly by a skilled practitioner, but are not without occasional side-effects. A new home-use technology has just been launched onto the market, and it involves the use of patches containing microstructures like tiny needles, which are made of hydrolysed Hyaluronic acid. The patch is applied to the eye area and the microstructures penetrate the epidermis, delivering Hyaluronic acid into the skin. Often applied overnight, it means you wake up with thicker, plumper, more youthful skin. The Skinova Acropass eye patches are available at West London Dermatology Centre, the UK first stockist of this exciting home-use technology. u

‘I WILL NEVER BUY SHOES ANYWHERE ELSE AGAIN’ Recruitment manager Andrea Mahn had so much foot pain she could barely walk.

T

his fit and active 40 year old had been suffering from Plantar Fasciitis – a painful inflammation of the tissue on the sole of the foot. “I was treated by an osteopath, a physiotherapist and a sports therapist but nothing really eased the pain,” explained Andrea. As her job involves a lot of standing and walking, life was becoming unbearable. She was also unable to partake in her favourite hobby, running. Then Andrea saw an advert for Foot Solutions and decided to pay them a visit.

“I turned up hoping that someone would be able to help me,” she said, “and it was the best decision I have ever made. “The staff were knowledgeable, helpful and attentive and after half an hour of tests and examinations they found a solution. It was the most fantastic service I could have imagined.” Foot Solutions provided Andrea with custom shoe inserts and a special device to help stretch her feet at night. “The device gave me immediate relief from the pain, allowing me to sleep better and when the inserts were fitted in my shoes they made a huge difference. I had faced the prospect of never being able to wear high heels – but I can now wear them for up to 14 hours if necessary. “I don’t suffer at all anymore. I can do my job and go running without constant pain. I will never buy shoes anywhere else again.” ◆

Foot Solutions custom arch supports minimise and even remove the pain resulting from such conditions and allow much greater mobility. We even have a stylish range of shoes (including heels), you can wear with the arch supports. At Foot Solutions, our trained consultants use high-tech foot scanning equipment and gait analysis to help find the perfect customised footwear and arch supports for your feet.

Our room, Sappho, is not huge but has stunning views of the river through a pair of large windows and I’m please to find a deep whirlpool bath, the perfect way to start off our Bingham experience. Coming down for dinner later on, we find there’s a wedding party taking place; this

isn’t uncommon as the Bingham is a very popular spot for functions like this and they usually reserve the garden and lower ground floor. At this time of year it’s still more pleasant to be inside looking out over the grounds so this isn’t a problem for us. Dinner is excellent and attention is paid to every detail starting with a deliciously meaty amuse bouche. The starters are a salt baked beetroot salad and my sea trout, with delicate celeriac and vanilla puree, tastes as fresh as if it had been pulled straight out of the water. We are all about the carnivorous main courses, choosing beef fillet with jersey royals and red wine jus and lamb neck

53 CHIS_June16_Food_Review.indd 53

TOWNHOUSE IS THE archetypal BOUTIQUE HOTEL with wild garlic, puy lentils and sprouting broccoli. Both are impeccably presented, cooked faultlessly to our preferences and are rich and flavoursome. This perfect meal is finished off with a mixed cheese board and an exquisitely velvety chocolate marquise. As we head up after dinner later in the evening, things are still quite lively in the bar and the wedding party is in full swing. This is an intimate boutique hotel, remember, so it’s difficult not to be swept up in the atmosphere. In the morning, after a beautifully presented eggs Benedict breakfast delivered to our room, I’m heading over to Bhuti the Bingham’s sister company and eco wellbeing centre. This organic escape opened in February this year. I’m booked in for a Swedish massage and Bhuti feels like a restful sanctuary. The facilities consist of airy yoga spaces, a number of attractively arranged apartments where members can come to work, read or sit in calm contemplation, and an organic cafe focusing on natural ingredients. The retreat works its magic and when I finally arrive back in the real world a sense of calm is with me that remains for the rest of the afternoon.

here is no place in the world like Tokyo. There is no city in which you can feel so overwhelmed, so completely entranced and yet find such stillness. Here’s how to experience the best of this intense dichotomy.

CONTEMPORARY f the first aim of any trip is to eschew clichéd tourist traps, I Park Hyatt New York Bar (à la Lost in Translation) is out. But enlisting the expert help of InsideJapan is a necessity; when you have someone like Tyler Palma to show you hidden bars in Shibuya and get you into locals-only izakayas (Japan’s answer to a pub), you’re guaranteed to get the real deal. He’ll make sure you see authentic Tokyo, as it lives and breathes, answering questions and giving tips on where to go for fantastic ramen (Hashigo in Ginza) and tempura (Motoyoshi in Minato-ku), or cool places to get great coffee (Blue Bottle, Aoyama). He’ll show you unique pockets of Harajuku and Shimokitazawa, and help you to navigate the mind-boggling technology district, Akihabara. You’ll feel like a native, which will only be enhanced once you check into

your ‘home away from home’ – Aman Tokyo. This isn’t your average home. Yet its gasp-inducing apartment rooms and suites are the pieds-à-terre you’ve always dreamed of owning. In the soaring Otemachi Tower in Marunochi business district, Aman Tokyo will give you a new definition of luxury. Here, showiness is replaced by subtlety and true omotenashi – Japanese hospitality – supersedes obtrusive service. This phenomenal resort, little over a year old, is a modern interpretation of traditional Japanese homes. Materials such as camphor wood, granite and washi paper capture the classic aesthetic and spirit of engawa, which is the transitional area between living and outdoor space. Panoramic views of Tokyo greet you through floor-to-ceiling windows; advanced home technology introduces you to the city’s latest inventions; and the sumo-sized furo invites you to indulge in Japanese-style bathing. Although if you want to explore Zen and Kampo herb healing spa therapies, simply head downstairs to Aman Spa. Within its 25,000 sq ft wellbeing centre you’ll discover contemporary adaptations of ancient rituals, majestic treatment rooms – each with private observation deck for post-treatment rehydration – Japanese and western-style hot baths, showers and steam rooms, a 30-metre heated swimming pool, and a state-of-the-art gym.

Even frequent spa-goers will be genuinely blown away by the facilities and the therapists’ skills, which should be tested during a 90-minute Seasonal Journey. It doesn’t matter which season you go, Aman Tokyo's incredible amenities are a brilliant way to say konichiwa to modern Japan.

CLASSIC he ‘must-see’ Tsukiji Fish Market is great for novelty, but T you’re better heading straight to Palace Hotel Tokyo, where you can sample the Market’s produce sans queues in the intimate, six-person Tatsumi tempura bar of Wadakura. In the sixth-floor Sushi Kanesaka you can savour Michelinstarred sushi by Shinji Kanesaka, or be introduced to traditional Japanese favourites in the main dining room. The seasonal kaiseki set menus are the best way to get a comprehensive feel for Wadakura’s impossibly elegant dishes and enjoy Palace Hotel Tokyo’s renowned views of the Imperial Palace Garden and East Tokyo’s skyline. Minutes’ walk north, Nihonbashi’s sophisticated streets are glittered with luxury department stores housing international designer labels and heritage brands manufacturing fine traditional

crafts. Weary legs find respite in the terrifically elegant surrounds of Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo. Perched on the 38th floor of Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower, it’s not the only thing that is sky-high; service here is impeccable. Never has there been more attentive yet utterly unobtrusive staff anticipating your needs before you even do. This extends from the moment you enter the palatial foyer, through to the opulent day spa with Asian and western treatments, the sleek, high-tech fitness centre, and the twelve international bar and dining options. Refuelling at Sense, the fine Chinese restaurant, is wise; the fare is famous as are views of the cityscape and the iconic Skytree®.

If you want to get up close and personal with this impressive landmark, it’s possible to arrange a private helicopter charter. In the 80-minute ride, the Eurocopter Hermès Edition hovers over Tokyo’s skyline, natural wonders Sagami Bay and Lake Ashinoko and the iconic and serenly beautiful Mount Fuji. Even in the slightly smaller rooms feel incredibly regal, with their stained wood, leather and silk forms. And, when you add in the Michelin-starred French restaurant, Signature, the ground floor fruit shop with the city’s most expensive fruit, and a particularly Instagrammable patisserie, you quickly realise this is the place for a truly decadent take on classic Tokyo. 

TRAVEL / UK GETAWAY THE HOTEL

t the Chapel has one of those stories. Founders Catherine and Ahmed stumbled upon the building by chance during a trip to the tiny Somerset village of Bruton. They were looking for a new home in the country; what they found was a derelict Methodist chapel in need of a great deal of TLC. They transformed the crumbling nook into a marvellous modern residence. Years later, they decided to turn their visionary home into a hotel – so now the building boasts an on-site bakery and restaurant as well as eight exceptionally lovely rooms. u

THE FOOD

A

THE AREA

t the Chapel is locally (and indeed nationally) renowned for the quality of its fare. The coffee and treats available in the bakery put most of London’s hipster bread-slingers to shame, while the restaurant serves top-notch grub of a creative yet unpretentious bent: think wood-fired pizza and locally sourced specialties prepared with a dash of Mediterranean flair. Oh, and it’s situated within the chapel itself, with huge windows, lush views and contemporary art to ogle. u

A

h, Bruton! What a wonderful surprise this little village is to the first-time visitor: cute enough to decorate a tourist’s teapot and surrounded by rolling fields, yet still amply blessed with cosmopolitan delights. Not least the world-class Hauser & Wirth gallery of contemporary art, a brisk tramp across the fields, and trend-leading design boutique Caro (carosomerset.com), five minutes from the hotel. u

HOT SEATS Matthew Williamson’s flamboyant fashion translates to interiors in a new collaboration with Duresta. Absolutely quizzes him Interview Pendle Harte

PENDLE HARTE: You have worked with interiors before, collaborating with The Rug Company and Osborne and Little, but this is your first foray into furniture. Where did you look for inspiration? MATTHEW WILIAMSON: The collection came to life mostly by looking at pieces of my own, bought mostly from antique markets or dealers over the years and which I’ve adapted or updated myself. I also collect pictures and samples of anything that catches my eye, so it was a fun process to build a collection which came from my personal favourite pieces.

fashion and interiors industries that I see a real crossover in my work. I imagine that a woman who buys one of my dresses also wants a fabulous sofa or wallpaper and it’s this 360 degree lifestyle approach that I love most. PH: How would you describe your own home? What are your favourite things and where do they come from? MW: I’m lucky with my home as it has good bones. It’s a Victorian townhouse and the rooms are large with high ceilings and great original details so really my job was just to dress it and make it personal to me. I love the lounge most of all. It’s a large lozenge shape with an old wooden barrel door, original parquet floors and big bay windows overlooking the garden. This room is quite neutral but the furniture and items I’ve collected over the years add colour and character and tell a personal story. It’s changing all the time. I love moving things around

I’M NOT about glitz. MY MOST

treasured items ARE inexpensive, SENTIMENTAL PIECES

PH: Your style has always involved colour and print. How do fashion colours and prints translate into furniture? MW: My passion is for colour, patterns, textiles, travel, culture and exotic elements. I love bringing my DNA to whatever product I’m working on. While fashion has been my main career focus, there is such a huge overlap between the

HOMES & INTERIORS / PROFILE I prefer

to MAKE SOMETHING poor look RICH regularly to keep it fresh. It’s easier than you sometimes think to make your space evolve, and adding a few small touches here and there can help to update your look. Flowers, candles, cushions, book piles and pictures are easy ways to add areas of interest. A bit like my clothes, I prefer to make something poor look rich. I think that comes from my work ethic and from my parents. I’m not about glitz. My most treasured items are inexpensive, sentimental pieces: a necklace with charms picked up on my travels and a bowl of rocks collected from the beach. PH: How did the collaboration with Duresta come about? MW: Duresta is a brilliant brand based in the UK, making all its furniture by hand. I’m drawn to brands which value craftsmanship and quality and they certainly do that. Making my first line of furniture with them has been a passion project which I’ve loved. It’s been a real journey to see these pieces come to life over the past year and I’m thrilled with the results as they really reflect my brand’s DNA. Now, the difficult thing for me is to edit which pieces I want to have in my own home.

PH: What did you learn from it? MW: I learnt so much. It’s always fascinating to step out of your comfort zone and pick up new skills and work on different projects. I totally underestimated the time, patience and craftsmanship of each and every piece until I visited the Duresta factory in Long Eaton and saw for myself what a labour of love the entire process is. PH: Who are your favourite designers, both fashion and interiors? MW: My favourite designers are Ossie Clarke, Zandra Rhodes, Christian Lacroix and Dries Van Noten. PH: What will your next fashion collection look like? MW: The next fashion collection will drop on my website in May. It’s a fresh collection of separates for the ‘see now, buy now, wear now’ consumer. We have built a new fashion and lifestyle platform with products available on our site. PH: Are any other interior projects or collaborations in the pipeline? MW: I’ve just launched a collection of stationery and am soon to launch sportswear in May, followed by a designer colouring book by the end of the year and I then have my eye on childrenswear and china.  Matthew Williamson for Duresta is available at Harrods

Eschewing the glittery, embellished and overwrought designs so often offered to kids these days, these plain and simple summer shoes remain stylish while being completely functional. Moulded for Baby’s growing feet with built-in arch support, the ace in the Salt-water sleeve is that these sandals can get wet – in fact, getting wet is good for them and allows them to mould to the shape of the foot, so littles have the allclear to splash around. u

Pressure Drop Parents – leave those kids alone. At exam time, it’s best if we stay out of the way Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e

t’s exam period. A testing time for pupils and parents alike. But the one thing our children don’t need is any more pressure from us. Britain’s top private schools have reported an alarming rise in exam stress among pupils over the past five years — much of it caused by pressure from anxious parents. According to a survey by the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC), which represents the country’s most famous schools including Eton, Harrow and Westminster, 56% of heads polled said that pressure from home to get high grades was the biggest cause of exam-related stress. Nearly all head teachers (97%) said they were now asking parents into advice sessions and offering parenting classes on how to deal with the issue amid concerns that youngsters are buckling under the pressure. “Today’s teenagers are increasingly overwhelmed by the pressures they feel to succeed in life. There is no doubt that we — parents, teachers, friends — must come to their assistance,” Chris King, headmaster of Leicester Grammar School Trust and chairman of the HMC. “Parents — and I am one of them — need to keep a sense of perspective and try not to transmit our anxieties onto our children. The survey reveals that more than three quarters of schools are calling in therapists and all are offering counselling within school. Three-quarters offer mindfulness sessions and nearly half have laid on yoga classes. At Queen Anne’s, an independent girls’ boarding school in Caversham, Berkshire, pupils have been attending de-stressing workshops for the past year– and their grades in their mock

More than three QUARTERS of schools are CALLING IN THERAPISTS

GCSEs have gone up by up to two grades as a result. Pupils have been taught techniques such as deep breathing to calm themselves as well as learning how proper revision and planning can reduce the risk of panic during an exam. “Parents often inadvertently make their children more stressed,” says headmistress Julia Harrington. “They need a certain amount of stress to do well, but too much turns into anxiety, which floods the brain and makes them feel hopeless.” So what can parents do to help? Don’t take over. The most common complaint from teenagers, says Eileen Tracy, author of The Student’s Guide to Exam Success, is that parents – mainly mothers – are too involved and this makes them anxious and fearful of disappointing them. Be a non-intrusive, supportive

79 CHIS_June16_Education.indd 79

presence. Offer tea, toast and sympathy. Don’t nag them. Even seemingly anodyne comments can be corrosive. “Every time a stressed-out mother says, ‘Shouldn’t you be revising?’ the student gets a shot of adrenaline, which doesn’t make them want to work,” says Tracy. Avoid barbed comments. (“What, on instagram again?”), says Janey Downshire, from Teenagers Translated. Pass the responsibility back to them. “I tell my children that I don’t want them to regret not working hard enough. Ask what they would like from you. Be specific when you offer help. “Tell me three things I can do for you,” says Dr Carina Eriksen, a consultant psychologist who works in schools. “That way you are promoting a collaborative approach.” Don’t banish them to their bedroom for hours. Let them come home from school, let off steam and eat something nutritious. “Never believe a teenager until they’ve recharged their blood sugar levels,” advises Bernard Trafford, headmaster of the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle. He encourages his pupils to work for no more than an hour at a time. After this, “they need to move, stretch their legs, have a drink”. Following a few hours revising, they need fresh air: “Healthy mind in healthy body” is more important than ever at this time. Don’t ban them from the computer, says Harrington. “They might not be working but the chances are they are. The exam system has changed a lot — there is much more analysis and deep thinking now rather than rote learning of facts.” Don’t tell them their future depends on this exam. “It’s a parent’s job to give the wider picture: life doesn’t hang on any exam,” says Tracy. 

MOST SATISFYING TRANSACTION:

I NEVER THOUGHT I’D SEE:

It’s a bit of a cliché but all transactions are satisfying as it means I have done my job in finding someone their dream home. However, dealing with older members of the community has to be most satisfying as you get more involved and usually help them at every single stage.

Pitshanger Lane as London winner of the Great British High Street Awards 2015 - it has certainly put the area on the map.

MOST INTERESTING PROPERTY:

After 30 years in Ealing, there is still one stand out property from my early days: the Victorian Gothic style Lodge just inside the gates of Hanwell Cemetery. isitors to the club’s recent Open Day, sponsored by Winkworth Ealing & Acton, were pleased to see MP Ruth Cadbury, who had popped in to watch some of the proceedings. Firstcomers saw an excellent karate demonstration followed by a series of tennis coaching sessions, starting with children from the age of three. Back indoors, visitors were able to try their hand at

Q&A WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT RECENTLY ABOUT THE LOCAL MARKET?

We are finding less families moving out the country and rather staying in South West London for the good schools and easy commute. WHERE ARE YOU SEEING THE HIGHEST PRICE RISES AT THE MOMENT?

We are seeing the highest prices rises in the £500,000-£1,000,000 flat market. This is driven by short supply and first time buyers wanting to get on the ladder whilst they can get a good mortgage rate. Rental investors are still very active in this price range too, despite the additional 3% stamp duty.

My property career began in 2007 on the east coast of England. Heading up the sales department of such a well-established branch has been a real privilege and we continue to dominate in the area. My passion for the job makes the long hours fly by, but I do enjoy escaping to see friends and family. ◆

I have been working in the lettings industry since 2000, and after 16 years, I still love my job. Hammersmith is a wonderful area to live in with lots of green spaces, bars and restaurants. In my spare time I go to the gym, spend time with family and friends and I like to get away on the occasional holiday. ◆

South West London. We are seeing a lot of families in Prime Central London migrate out to South West London. Areas such as Fulham Richmond, Wimbledon, Barnes and Chiswick have seen steady price growth this year despite the stamp duty changes which has affected prime central London far more. ◆

FAMOUS PLACES London hides a plethora of celebrity homes. These are the most recent to come on the market

ROTTEN PLACE TO BUY?

t’s four decades since punk spilled spitting and screaming onto our TV screen and the Sex Pistols’ released their debut single, Anarchy in the UK. Original band members Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock shocked TV interviewers and caused mayhem at concerts. But it didn’t last long. After touring the US, Rotten – real name John Lydon – left the band in 1978 and retreated to a house he’d just bought in Chelsea. Lydon, now 60, sold the five-floor property in 1981 when he moved to New York, and the building has since been divided up into two apartments, with a blue plaque outside to celebrate his time there. Back then the apartment on Gunter Grove had smoke-stained walls and a low-slung futon style couch, but it’s since had a makeover and is yours to rent for £1,295 a week. u savills 0207 578 9020 www.savills.co.uk

The singer has been ploughing his own furrow since then and has a new solo album out next month These People - with songs tackling topics such as the war in Syria, the Arab Spring uprisings and the death of a close friend. ownton character Sarah Bunting played by Daisy Lewis was an idealistic teacher keen on bringing social justice to the world in series four and five. And it’s not the first time she has played feisty female characters. Before joining the period drama, she had parts in Doctor Who and After You’ve Gone, but has also produced movies including a short film starring Charles Dance. The actress also has an eye for property; she shared a penthouse flat with her brother in Pimlico before moving into her own pad, an interest that evidently runs in the family as her father John is chairman of the Groucho Club and part owns the Sloane Square hotel. The Lewis siblings’ flat is now up for sale at £2.25m. The three bedroom property in Warwick Square has views across the capital. u Jackson-Stops 0207 828 4050 www.jackson-stops.co.uk

SCENE OF A HITCHCOCK HOUSING DRAMA

aster of suspense Alfred Hitchcock got his first shot at directing in 1922 with the film Number 13. This and many of his early films were shot at Gainsborough Studios. However, at the start of WW2 the building’s chimney was deemed a liability during air raids, and the studio was sold in 1949. After starting life as a power station, then going into the movie business, the building in Hoxton has also been used as a whisky store, housed theatre productions, and a fashion show by Alexander McQueen. Much of it was demolished in 2002 and flats were built on the site, but as a nod to its cinematic past, you’ll find a huge sculpture of Hitchock’s head in the centre of the four apartment blocks. IN THEIR OWN

WORDS

Christopher Stamp SALES MANAG ER KFH

O

riginally from Surrey, I grew up in a family where many of my relatives worked as landlords within the county and in London. For as long as I can remember, I was viewing properties with them, so it was only natural for me to want to follow in their footsteps and also become successful within the property market. As soon as I had finished school, I headed straight to the local estate agency to start my career. After a few years, I decided to relocate, and moved to the bright lights of London in 2009. Having lived and worked in west London for seven years, I can now safely say that Brook Green is where I intend to stay. My favourite places to visit in the area include Kerbisher & Malt, which serves delicious fish and chips, Popeseye Steakhouse, which offers decently priced steak, and The Bird in Hand, a lovely local pub where I like to relax whenever I get the chance. Knowing the area as I do, it comes as no surprise to me that the leafy streets of Brook

REBECCA NOONAN

Historically, there has always been huge demand for property in Brook Green

Green offer a calm residential enclave for many looking for a haven within London. The wide variety of properties, excellent transport links, and outstanding schools within and around the area, all add to its appeal. These schools are some of London’s most popular, with Larmenier & Sacred Heart primary, The Ecole Francaise de Londres Jacques Prevert and the independent St Paul’s Girls School all ensuring that families are flocking to the area, and will continue to do so. Considering how peaceful Brook Green is, the volume of transport links available are exceptional. Located only half a mile from Hammersmith underground station, with Kensington Olympia and Shepherd’s Bush also only a short walk away, commuters can easily get to all parts of the

city. The wide variety of property available in Brook Green also ensures that there is a good mix of people in the area. The conversion flats entice young professionals, who can relax at the many pubs and Brackenbury wine rooms on the weekend, whereas the grand characterful properties offer families their ‘forever’ homes. There is also a lovely collection of ever-popular painted terraced homes around Bolingbroke Road, and the elegant mansions flats of Queens Mansions and Phoenix Lodge Mansions ensure that there is something for everyone. Historically, there has always been huge demand for property in Brook Green. As well as the excellent transport links, the outstanding schools and all the local amenities, those moving out of the centre of London can get much more value for money here. I can only see the market continue to grow within Brook Green. As well as the influx of buyers migrating from central London, the ongoing regeneration, such as with the BBC television centre, and the nearby Westfield shopping centre, make Brook Green a great place to invest, work and live. u

PROPERTY / DEVELOPMENTS NIGEL LEWIS

NEW HOMES R EG E N E RAT I O N

RADICAL MAKEOVERS?

he capital’s race to build more T homes is having an unexpected result for some of its less predictable neighbourhoods, says Nigel Lewis. High prices and fewer homes for sale in the most desirable parts of London mean areas that have been less fashionable for years, are getting makeovers and – more importantly for London’s accommodationstarved residents – new homes. Areas that buyers might have previously struck off their wish lists are now go-to areas. And the developers’ cranes are following suit, crowding once sleepy skylines with their one-legged swingers. Here we look at some of the areas being upgraded with both regeneration cash as well as new, gleaming apartments developments.

SOUTH: ELEPHANT & CASTLE

here were some tentative signs of regeneration in and around Elephant and Castle during the mid-noughties when an expensive improvement programme was announced and several high-profile new homes developments were built. But after these were completed, the recession put a stop to any new money coming in. It’s all now picking up again with £3 billion earmarked for the area. As well as a more pedestrianfriendly road layout, there are several new developments under construction including Elephant Park, a former council estate. It is to include a new shopping precinct, gardens, and 2,500 sustainable homes. Developer Lendlease has just launched its latest phase called Highwood Gardens, which comprises 307 homes surrounded by attractive courtyard gardens designed by leading landscape architects, Gillespies. The new apartments at Highwood Gardens are available from £540,000. For more information, call 020 3675 9955 or visit www.elephantpark.co.uk. u

CENTRAL: SOHO SQUARE

ou might assume Soho and regeneration wouldn’t go together given its West End location, but only recently has the area’s sleazier reputation begun to wear off – much to the horror of fans such as Steven Fry and Marc Almond, who want to stop what they call its sanitisation. The arguments over Soho centre around its retail makeover and the loss of the small, independent shops that make it so unique and, consequently, apartment developers are treading carefully. Rather than shiny new blocks, older properties are being upgraded. The most recent example is the Duke of Portland’s former townhouse on Soho Square. Built during the late 17th century, this Grade II listed property is now called 10, Soho Square, a development by Oakmayne Bespoke where just one apartment is left to purchase for £4.75 million. WEST: WHITE CITY

f you’ve been wondering exactly what’s going to happen to the former BBC HQ site at White City, then we can reveal all. The site is to retain a connection with the BBC – it’s Worldwide operation has already moved into a new HQ and three studios will still operate on the site. But the army of camera operators, presenters, and stressed producers will now be joined by 950 new homes and apartments, new cafés and restaurants, a cinema, offices and a new outpost of Soho House. The first phase of the development includes 432 homes, due for completion in 2018, where prices start at £700,000 for a one-bedroom apartment to £7 million for a penthouse.
