s soon as we've cleared Halloween, the world of retail shifts its focus to Christmas. November marks the – unofficial, of course, but no less intense – start of the festivities. And we're not just talking about supermarkets. Christmas comes to Kew Gardens on 23 November – decently close to December, we feel – when a new trail of illuminations is unveiled, and this year's light show is set to trump those of the past four years, drenching the gardens in a magical shower of light and colour. The Kew Christmas lights have become a popular fi xture of Christmas in west London, and once they're up, there's no denying that the season is upon us. Still, we're not entirely resigned

to Christmas just yet at Absolutely. This month we focus on two inspirational women without so much as a sprig of tinsel. Firstly, Yasmin Le Bon, whose effortless style and enduring cool shines through in her new collection for Winser London. She tells us about the design process, and also reveals her love for Richmond Park. Then there's Aneeqa Khan, the west London-based entrepreneur behind eporta, who discusses revolutionising the world of online interiors. We hope you enjoy the issue. ◆

Bon Marche

Yasmin Le Bon has designed a new fashion collection for Winser London. Here she discusses fashion, family and Richmond Park Wo r d s p e a r l b oy d

It must be very exciting to design a fashion collection. What do you enjoy most? It’s a wonderful thing to be part of a creative team – to work with creative people who know so much technically and who you can learn from. It’s great to be learning – that’s what I really enjoy - developing ideas, thinking about things. I had some specific ideas and I’ve been helpfully led and we’ve developed things together. That’s the beauty of doing this type of project. I don’t think you can do anything on your own in life.”

yourself with other people. How do you think your new collection shows your personality? Putting your name to anything is a really personal thing and you are laying bare your soul to some extent. It’s actually quite a liberating experience and a challenge and it’s a very good thing. I’m naturally a very shy person, so having to get over the idea of being judged and just wanting to express yourself in the hope that someone else is going to get what you’re after is actually a thoroughly enjoyable experience. And learning to compromise. Being part of a different kind of team has been a real education.

I LIKE CLASSIC DESIGN.

I love design in

Has London influenced your collection? I love London. I live here and feel very attached to it. I can’t think of another capital city that has so much diversity of everything – bars, music, culture and wonderful surroundings. I live in Putney so I have Richmond Park on my doorstep. To me that’s a huge inspiration. I couldn’t just live in a concrete jungle, I have to have nature around me all the time that’s what I’m constantly inspired by.”

GENERAL

Putting your name on something is personal – you’re sharing something of

Chis_Nov16_YASMIN LE BON.indd 14

What was the mood and inspiration behind your collection? I’m obsessed by classic cars. I have been for some time. I read classic car magazines from cover to cover. They are a big element in this collection. Part of why I love classic cars is because I like classic design. I love design in general. You would never mistake one car for

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE another, whereas now they all look similar. I love the whole idea of lady racers – at the beginning of motor racing there were a lot of women racing cars. Women enjoyed cars just as much as men and many of them were doing rallies all over Europe. I was really fascinated by the idea of women in that powerful, active, adventurous role. This collection has a real vintage feel to it. I love vintage clothes, vintage design. I love vintage car racing and that idea of the adventurous spirit and the adventurous woman who raced classic cars is behind this collection.

design. It’s so much to do with coming upon the right thing at the right time. How did you choose the fabrics, colours and prints? There’s one fabric that I really wanted: a beautiful English herringbone tweed. To me it’s just gorgeous. It’s luxury. You could go out in the winter or the summer in it and it would keep you warm or keep you cool. It’s resilient yet still pure luxury. The English tweed came from that whole idea of old racing suits and utility wear. Something that’s really practical but I

Are any of the pieces inspired by clothes you already own? There are always things when you’re looking at designing a collection. You cherry pick from all sorts of areas. You look back at your own wardrobe - things that really worked – whether it was a great colour or texture. Or maybe something you thought didn’t quite work and you want to revisit it. I went vintage shopping in the States and found a wonderful flower brooch that really spoke to me. That’s what developed the floral silk print

I LIKE BLURRING THE

boundaries of NIGHTWEAR and DAYWEAR

I like the idea of blurring the boundaries of nightwear and daywear. I’ve walked around wearing pyjamas and nightdresses in the daytime forever. I think it’s an incredibly luxurious statement. I wasn’t really thinking of the woman I was designing for – I was really thinking of me. Completely selfish. I want every piece!”

wanted it to be luxurious as well, so it has an incredibly soft feel to it. Also the idea of the silk pyjama – that’s very much that 20s, 30s woman. She was very liberated and willing to take risks.”

Behind the scenes designing for Winser

What type of woman are you designing for? My woman is definitely adventurous and slightly athletic and sporty – she is playful.

17 Chis_Nov16_YASMIN LE BON.indd 17

Are there pieces that your daughters will want to borrow? I know what they’ll be after – the silk pyjama pant and the striped jumper. I can imagine my daughters’ generation wearing that with their ripped jeans or a big circular skirt – quite crazy. I think there’s an element for every generation.” We know Simon loves clothes too – what does he think of your collection? I have a feeling that Simon expects me to make the YLB Herringbone Tweed Zip Jacket for him. It’s not a man’s collection at all but when I told him what I was doing he instantly leapt up and said “Oh great! Can you do one for me?”.  winserlondon.com

Light Fantastic Christmas returns to Kew with a wonderful illuminated trail.Absolutely has a preview Wo r d s P E A R L B OY D

ew Gardens is set to transform into a magical afterdark explosion of festive colour this month. The annual Christmas spectacle is a breathtaking display of more than 60,000 lights in a mile-long illuminated trail inspired by the gardens themselves. Visitors will begin their journey through a botanic wonderland via two giant Christmas trees festooned with ribbon as the sweet aroma of mulled wine, hot chocolate and roasting chestnuts fill the air. As they head off into the night, visitors will meet a carpet of lights, gently swaying like blossom in the breeze, made up of a whopping 1,700 delicately flickering lights, before warming themselves at the scented Fire Garden inspired by Five Gold Rings from The Twelve Days of Christmas. Glittering trees dripping with giant crystals will bring the Gardens to life, as colourchanging reeds rise high into the night sky and visitors pass through a Tunnel of Lights animated by a staggering 63,000 pixels creating patterns and pictures to a well-known Christmas soundtrack. Along the trail, the whole family will get the chance to enjoy Kew karaoke at the Christmas Juke Box, before coming face to face with an avenue of floral installations creating

a shimmering Crystal Lawn. There’s a chance to pause at Mistletoe Moments before the woodland walk dotted with larger-than-life clusters of candles comes into view. A spectacular finale will see the Palm House Pond burst into life with an explosion of brightly coloured laser beams, streams of light and flickering orbs that dance in time to much-loved Christmas classics. The North Pole village is home to Santa and his elves, while a Victorian carousel and helter skelter at White Peaks will fill the younger visitors with

joy. As the winter trail comes to an end, visitors will finish the trail under the stars while toasting marshmallows, before admiring a stunning range

elam is a luxe knitwear boutique with a global story. All yarns are Italian – the finest cashmere – and the dyes are Iranian. Ancient techniques applied to tribal Gabbeh rugs are used to create organic colours with an irregularity in appearance that delivers a collage effect, making each piece unique. The dyes come from native plants and roots such as pomegranate skin; the yarns are hand-dyed and left to dry in the sun in Iran before being sent back to Italy for knitting. FASHION / MOODBOARD

MY MOODBOARD Paddy Dickinson, Chiswick-based jewellery designer, shares her inspirations

Story Keeper

Faye Dunaway

MY FAVOURITE PIECE FROM TOTEM’S CURRENT COLLECTION… is the Story Keeper.

It is based on a 200-year-old container from Jordan and inside it you can keep a story of up to 700 characters, printed on waterproof paper, keeping it protected.

Iona Abbey, Iona

MY FAVOURITE DESIGNER...

is Isabel Marant. I love that she makes chic clothing for women who like a bit of rock edge, but want to be classic and sophisticated within that. I’m petite, so I look for simple, gamine clothing styles. I also love Celine and Carven.

MY STYLE ICONS... are Faye

Dunaway and Lauren Hutton circa 1970. They were endlessly glamorous, simple, chic and they always shone through what they were wearing.

MY SIGNATURE SCENT... is Le Labo, Rose 31.

MY FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION...

I love many exotic destinations, but my favourite place on earth is the Isle of Iona in Scotland. It is idyllic, wild, tiny, beautiful and magical. I have had some wonderful times there.

alking into Benefit is always fun. The retro decor, quirky packaging and inventive names (I’m looking at you, ‘They’re Real!’ mascara) put a little colour back into your beauty routine. I have been a fan of the Benefit brow bar for while now - it’s quick (you can squeeze a wax and tint into your lunch break) and I always leave feeling that little bit more confident. Having been a little negligent with my brow maintenance lately, I stroll into Benefit off the street and the lovely technician is kind enough to squeeze me in. I am lucky

this time but Benefit’s appointments often fill up so it’s best to either book in advance or nip in earlier to reserve a time slot. I perch on the high stool in the corner of the shop as my eyebrows are examined. The assessment: one is behaving itself but the other is a little patchy, meaning that after my tint I might want to add a little pencil to even them out. In ten minutes, we’re done and, though the tinting requires sitting for a while looking a lot like Groucho Marx, it’s pain-free, easy and I emerge thrilled with the results and with plans to return. ◆ ● BENEFIT COSMETICS Boots, Ariel Way, W12; benefitcosmetics.co.uk

ABSOLUTELY / PROMOTION

DO YOU HAVE THE MOTIVATION? Terry Rodham, The Hogarth and Park Club's wellness manager, gives Absolutely his expert advice on getting fit for life

E

ver had those times when your motivation and drive is on a downward spiral or simply not at the levels you’d like them to be? Motivation is an extremely powerful tool in helping us to achieve our goals and overcome barriers. This applies in all aspects of our lives. After all, it is just so easy to not to go to the gym, not to go for jog and not to take the healthier diet option. Motivation can come in many different forms and on many different levels. Of course, it can come from within, but having someone to motivate you can be a big help. In an exercise class environment, having a qualified teacher who loves what they do can be motivating in itself. When you turn up to an exercise class at the same time every week, the routine will help you to come back again and again. The same group of exercisers and teacher can also make for a pleasurable social experience, which is undoubtedly motivating. What motivates one person can turn another off. For some of us, going to the gym is somewhere we want one-to-one attention, whereas for others it’s actually more motivating to be given personal space. To get this balance right for every member is a challenge, but it is possible. In our Hogarth and Park Clubs we use

Having someone to MOTIVATE YOU can be a big help the five hours of personal training time every new member receives in their first month to best understand what drives and motivates them. By then providing one personal training session for every month of the membership, the relationship and trust develops and therefore so does the depth of motivation. With the massive advancements in equipment technology and new communication tools available, members can be given exercise plans in and out of the club and exercise history can even be shared remotely. At The Hogarth and Park Club, you have the opportunity to stay connected via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube from every

41 CHIS_Nov16_Park_Club_adv.indd 41

single cardio machine. Variety is the spice of life, so there are multiple opportunities to sign up to a cycle sportive, duathlons, 10Ks, half-marathons or even a marathon. We have seasonal triathlons at The Park Club which are great fun while being a great challenge too. Members can sign up to boot camps, circuits, boxing training and so much more. Don’t forget that aside from the many health and fitness benefits, exercising can be fun and rewarding! Keep moving and stay healthy.  The Hogarth Health Club, 020 8994 0500; thehogarth.co.uk /The Park Club, 020 8743 4321; theparkclub.co.uk

VENISON TARTARE & CELERIAC REMOULADE ean and full-flavoured venison doesn’t need a gutsy red wine when served as a cold starter with tangy remoulade and an egg yolk. PUMPKIN RAVIOLI & PARMESAN his is a case of pairing local with local – an Italian wine for an Italian dish. The sweetness of the pumpkin filling, especially if there is sage in the mix, is a beautiful match with a good quality, zesty dry Pecorino (the wine grape, not the cheese), which just happens to love lashings of tangy parmesan cheese too. ● Harvey Nichols Pecorino 2014, £12 harveynichols.com

NAPA Chanelling California in Chiswick Wo r d s j a m e s s ta n i f o r t h

apa is a hidden gem, its modern, spacious interior currently disguised by a refurbishment project that will see the arrival of a new, breezy outdoor terrace. The menu is marked by a Californian lightness, neatly balanced and cooked with a delicate touch that can sometimes elude grill restaurants. As you would expect from a venue with the grill at its heart, Napa particularly excels in its handling of a wide range of meat and fish dishes. If you’re craving a portion of something haute protein, you’ll find it here. Our meal begins with Dorset crab on sourdough toast and pan-seared scallops with cauliflower and apple puree. These are choice ingredients treated with the respect they demand; the crab balanced with thin slivers of chilli and spring onion, the scallops bearing just the right amount of char.

N

The Glasshouse Michelin-starred dining in Kew Wo r d s J a m e s P i d d u c k

W

ith its enviable location opposite Kew Gardens and its Michelin star, The Glasshouse is a promising proposition. The menu overflows with intellect and intriguing combinations to seduce the most discerning palette. To start, there's roasted quail served with woodland mushrooms, pickled daikon and a sweetcorn velouté, delicately poured by the waiter upon arrival. My friend chooses heirloom tomato and goats curd salad with olives, balsamic and pecorino brioche which she hugely enjoys. Tomatoes are sharp and a bright array of greens, reds and oranges, and the cheese is soft and creamy, with small petals to decorate the dish. Next is Cornish cod with grilled squid, chorizo, runner beans and anchovy dressing, plus breast of Normandy chicken, accompanied by wild mushrooms, gnocchi, rainbow chard and tarragon sauce. The cod bursts with bold flavours, a dream for any seafood

lover and a light lunch choice. The chicken is perfectly succulent, with my guest complimenting its subtle sauce. I follow the sommelier’s recommendation of Syrah “Sybel” rosé which is dry, aromatic and a perfect fit. I unashamedly indulge in the dark and white chocolate mousse for dessert, served with Disaronno, almonds and a cherry sorbet. The mousses are smooth and gently rich and the sorbet is refreshing, on an almond biscuit crumble that adds a tasty crunch to this delicious treat. A passionfruit meringue comes with coconut ice cream and caramelised mango. The meringue is soft, while the subtle coconut pairs well against the sweet mango, with new layers of flavour experienced in each mouthful. We are left in awe by the spectrum of bright colours found on each plate and the astounding collage of flavours and textures. We cannot fault our dining experience and applaud the talents behind The Glasshouse.  14 Station Parade, TW9; glasshouserestaurant.co.uk

47 Dul_Nov16_Food_Review.indd 47

Next, we opt for a rare sirloin steak and plaice with braised fennel. The former was prepared with careful self-assurance, properly rested with expertly cooked sides. The latter was a real success, gently turned into a flaky, golden, saffron-infused sea song, offset by a delicious selection of seasonal vegetables. Napa still has areas that require updating. The apple puree was too verdant and lacked acidity. And the desserts asked for more attention (if you promise pannacotta, make sure it wobbles). However, for this understated establishment, stardom is most certainly within reach. 

hen the snow falls she’s found in St Moritz, with the others of the jet set,’ croons Peter Sarsdedt in the 60s classic ‘Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)’. The jet set may have been superseded by the private jet set but the song was right about the glamour of St Moritz – and by the way, say 'Saint' not 'San'. It is still the destination chosen by the beautiful people and is in fact enjoying a new burst of popularity among London’s jeunesse dorée, whose mothers were only babies when Brigitte Bardot was married to Gunther Sachs. It was this German-born industrialist, photographer and sportsman who fell in love with the place and launched the exclusive clubs that made a small village in the Engadine Valley the place to be. But the British love affair with St Moritz goes back even further than the 1960s, to the early days of winter sports. It is home to the Cresta Run, a private tobogganing club, where men (and it is only men except for the last day of the season) hurl themselves down a terrifyingly steep ice track on a ‘skeleton’, hardly more than a tin tray, round legendary

bends like Shuttlecock, at up to 80 miles per hour. While the more cosmopolitan members wear modern techno kit, some more traditional Brits can still be seen in tweeds. Toboggans are very much part of the St Moritz experience and while the Cresta is a private club, both bobsleighing and sledging can be organised. Slide all the way down to Celerina, the next village, and come back up by train. Not having access to a jet, private or otherwise, I arrived by train but this is a memorable experience in itself. Clean and punctual, Swiss trains are the eighth wonder of the world and the steep, narrowgage line, dating from 1903, which carries the Glacier Express actually climbs through a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, under 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges. On the platform at St Moritz I am met by a smiling liveried chauffeur, who grabs my bag and whisks me up to the Carlton Hotel, on the mountainside above the station, with a view to the lake – frozen so hard in winter that they have polo and horse racing there as well as a gourmet food festival. I have very happy memories of a small family-run hotel in Switzerland where I stayed as a teenager, and nothing was ever too much trouble. The Swiss just

understand how to do hotels and although the Carlton is a far grander place, it has many of the same virtues – just scaled up. It is welcoming and service is personal, friendly and somehow totally reassuring. Built in 1913, it has been comprehensively updated to include all the facilities of a contemporary luxury hotel without losing any of its atmosphere. The 60 rooms are all suites with lake views. It closes in summer, allowing everything to be maintained immaculately and the focus to be fully on

SKI PASSES appear AS IF BY MAGIC;

being the best for winter. Everything has been thought through. Ski passes appear as if by magic. Staff patiently allow you to try on as many boots as you like before you set off from a basement ski room that seamlessly connects you with the shuttle bus which will run you to the lift and bring you back whenever you wish. There is absolutely no struggling along carrying your own skis. Neither of the two major ski areas, Corviglia and Corvatsch, is overcrowded. St Moritz has so much to offer the non-skier that mere skiing is sometimes overlooked, but there is a variety of runs, open sunny bowls and good lifts, plus the famously intoxicating ‘champagne air’ of the Engadine Valley. It has hosted the Winter Olympics in the past and in February 2017 the World Championships will be held there. There is a seductive spa at the Carlton, with a huge range of specialised treatments. Its signature offering combines five elements: facial massage, reflexology, lymphatic, hot stone and aromatherapy. The 75-minute massage is delivered in a light and spacious room, wittily designed by the Italian architect Carlo Rampazzi, who is responsible for revamping the hotel, in sea blues and greens. A short walk from the hotel into the centre of the village takes you to Via Serlas, the Rodeo Drive or Bond Street of St

Moritz. Cartier, Harry Winston, Bulgari, Gucci and Prada all have flagship stores, while Trois Pommes stocks Jil Sander, Tod and many other international fashion labels under one roof. More tempting in many ways and laid out as beautifully as the jewellery are the cakes and sweets in Café Hansellmann, the village’s fabled tea shop. The sight of tiny chic women with even tinier dogs and enormous fur coats tucking into pastries is one not to be missed. However, it would be silly to go too mad over tea – the Carlton prides itself on its food, both Swiss and more local Engadine specialities, including wines, at Romanoff, the large, high-ceilinged main dining room, where they also offer glorious breakfasts to linger over. On the floor below is fine-dining

53 CHIS_November16_Travel_v2.indd 53

restaurant Da Vittorio, an offshoot of chefs Roberto and Enrico Cerea’s three-star Da Vittorio in Brusaporto, which itself has one very well-deserved Michelin star. Try the tasting menu. There is plenty of nightlife in St Moritz and the ever-helpful concierge can of course recommend and organise things, but there is a spacious and relaxed bar just outside Romanoff with an open fire. The temptation to remain wrapped in the Carlton cocoon, perhaps sipping Napoleon brandy like the girl in the song, is hard to resist. I am afraid my answer to ‘Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)’ is to bed for a blissful night’s sleep. 

 Carlton Hotel St. Moritz has rooms available from €900 per night, based on two adults sharing a Junior Suite on a B&B basis, including CHF 100 food & beverage credit per adult per day, service charge and VAT. TRAVEL / GULF AIR

Bright Future Gulf Air announces orders of 45 aircraft with Boeing and Airbus at the Bahrain International Air Show 2016 Wo r d s a b s o l u t e ly

S

ince their great success sponsoring the Bahrain Grand Prix in April this year, Gulf Air has gone from strength to strength. Most recently, the Kingdom of Bahrain’s national carrier has announced, on the first day of the Bahrain International Airshow 2016, restructured orders of 45 aircraft with Boeing and Airbus in deals worth a combined total of USD7.6 billion. This order will be made up of 6 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, 17 Airbus A321neo and 12 Airbus A320neo aircraft. The delivery of these aircraft will begin in the second quarter of 2018 and come as a result of extensive negotiations with both aircraft manufacturers. The restructured orders will simplify Gulf Air’s future widebody fleet to Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and make sure that its future narrow-body fleet will mostly focus on A320 neo Family aircraft. So, what does all this exciting news mean for you and me? Most importantly it means that Gulf Air will have the capability to expand and begin to realise the airline’s extensively studied future network requirements. It also ensures that Gulf Air will maintain one of the youngest fleets in the region while building upon its award-winning reliability and on-time performance. Commenting on the agreement, Gulf Air Chief Executive Officer Mr. Maher Salman Al Musallam, said, “As long-

standing partners, Boeing and Airbus have understood the challenges faced by Gulf Air and embraced our future looking strategy. I am delighted that we have arrived at mutually agreeable solutions to restructure our previous orders with aircraft that are more fuel-efficient, modernised, reliable and which, at the same time, allow Gulf Air to operate our wide and narrow-body fleet at lower operating costs. This is in-line with our mission to put the airline firmly on a path towards long term commercial sustainability.” As Mr. Maher commented later on, “the airline’s future looks increasingly promising.”  gulfair.com

Online Decorating Introducing Aneeqa Khan, the entrepreneur behind eporta, the Airbnb of the interiors world Wo r d s H a n n a h H o p k i n s

here is simply too much choice. The interiors industry is swamped with so many options that anyone choosing anything from a tap to a shelving system is hard-pressed to know where to start. But instead of being inundated by the array of online interiors shops at our disposal, savvy homeowners are bookmarking eporta. A site for interiors professionals, it allows you to discover and buy pieces from all over the world in one place, from unknown craftspeople to established luxury brands. Known as the Airbnb of the interiors market, the online portal connects furniture and product designers with potential buyers such as retailers, architects and interior designers. It combines a slick catalogue and a messaging service through which buyers and sellers can hook up, tailor orders

and negotiate discounts. Like Airbnb, the company takes a cut of the deal price agreed by the two sides of the transaction. The brainchild of Aneeqa Khan, previously head of strategy at Zoopla, the brand was born when she bought a place in Brixton and struggled to find furniture to fill it. “I was shocked at how difficult it was to access beautiful and original products despite the huge number of fantastic brands around the world”, she says. “Digging deeper, I realised that it wasn’t just a case of products being hard to find for consumers, and actually the real issue in the industry was that professional buyers needed an online platform to help them discover and manage trade relationships in one place.” In a global industry where hundreds of thousands of brands are dotted around the world, eporta simplifies the buying process and fast-tracks relationship building by making it easy to work directly with suppli-

KIDS & EDUCATION / SCHOOL TALK

Moving on up Transition to senior school is hard for many children, but a new study finds that teething problems can linger on... Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e

I

t is something quite depressingly familiar to many parents of teens. In Years 4, 5 and 6, you have a cheery, enthusiastic, bouncy child who wants to do everything at school. Choir, football, drama, drumming, dance, gardening, reading, chess, gymnastics, orchestra, swimming – you name it, they want to do it. And then they start senior school and before you know it the apple of your eye is a slumping morass of negative energy, too enervated by life to do much more than grunt (boys) or throw a hissy fit about something entirely inconsequential (girls). Until now, much of this change has been blamed on hormones, but a new study reveals there may be more to it than that. It has long been known that the transition to senior school is a difficult one. Parents quite naturally think children who aren’t settling easily are having ‘teething problems’ and assume these will subside after a term or two. Most do, but what if they don’t? A new study shows that for a significant minority of students, problems can be long term and, perhaps surprisingly, that these problems can be more defined in Year 9 than Year 7. According to research from GL Assessment which was based on data from almost 32,000 students, children’s generally positive attitudes to school not only decline once they move to secondary, but keep on falling for two or three years afterwards. These problems are not necessarily academic, but can be about confidence, boredom, friendship groups or quite simply their attitude to the school and their teachers. With all available research suggesting that a pupil’s attitude plays a vital role in his or her academic achievement, it is therefore important that these problems are nipped in the bud.

Previously positive ATTITUDES to school DECLINE once children MOVE TO SECONDARY

The proportion of children who feel good about school declines from 94 per cent in Year 3 to 84 per cent in Year 9. Positive attitudes towards teachers fall from 93 to 84 per cent and towards attendance from 90 to 82 per cent over the same period. The biggest declines in all these factors occur after Year 7 and not before. The study also records an increase in students who say they are bored between Year 3 and Year 9, the number of children who say they like their

73 EDUCATION2.indd 73

teacher falls 10 percentage points between Years 3 and 9. That might not be a huge number, but that equates to some 70,000 students in each year group who have a much more negative perception of teachers. Different schools will obviously face different issues. At Latymer Upper in west London, pupils come from a wide range of social backgrounds. Catriona SutherlandHawes, director of admissions at the school, says: “Moving to secondary school can be a challenge for children, particularly for those coming from a smaller school environment. They will worry about making friends, what others will think about them, whether they can keep up with the work. But it is in fact the same for all children, regardless of where they are joining from and Senior Schools will put huge efforts – not obvious to the children – into helping everyone settle in, no matter their background.” Boarding schools have their own set of challenges. Susan Hamlyn, the Director of the Good School’s Guide Advice Service says: “I imagine it can be tricky in the second and third years, especially in boarding schools. Often, children come up with others from the same prep but then, after the first year, they are sometimes separated and the less socially confident ones can feel a bit lost without friends they’ve had since Reception. Also, year 8 is the year, for girls in particular, making rapid and intense friendships and then having spectacular fall-outs and that, again in a boarding school, can create ripples through a house or class. Sensitive house parents see these kinds of things coming and handle such marriages and divorces with tact and sensitivity.” But whether it is housemasters or heads of year or pastoral care, what this study clearly shows is the importance of making sure pupils are truly settled at school, even if that is as late as Year 9. ◆

CHISWICK GATE

Make home ownership in desirable West London a reality hiswick is ideally located for homeowners to enjoy close proximity to the buzz of Central London while benefitting from the more relaxed style of life found in leafy West London. Shared Ownership offers an affordable solution and is ideal for first-time buyers and young professionals; at Chiswick Gate, it’s possible to buy 30 per cent share of a one bedroom apartment with a five per cent deposit through Thames Valley Housing. The development comprises 51 one, two and three bedroom apartments. As financial circumstances change, homeowners have the option to increase their share through a process known as ‘staircasing’, which also means paying less in rent, until they own the full 100% of their home. Chiswick Gate is a short stroll from the River Thames, as well as a number of cafés and pubs, including wine bar Vinoteca, Victorian pub The Roebuck, and Charlotte’s Bistro. u

Ealing has a wide choice of excellent schooling for all ages – both state and independent – and this has always been a major draw to the area for families. Popular schools include Fielding Primary, Christ the Saviour, Harvington, Durston House and St Benedicts. WHAT TO DO ON A RAINY DAY:

Following its recent acquisition by British Land, significant investment has been pushed into Ealing Broadway shopping centre to improve its appeal.

Working in the West London market for 13 years, I’ve experienced various different markets. In my spare time I like to keep fit, travel and I manage my own rental portfolio which keeps me busy and allows me to keep an eye on letting trends. I am currently working on a new refurbishment project. u

Despite studying Economics at Newcastle University, my passion for property was always evident and stemmed from working with my dad on building sites growing up. When I’m not running around finding my buyers their dream home, I like running along the river and also getting away to ski. u

It’s an exciting time for Acton as millions of pounds are being invested in regenerating the area, with the construction of a new shopping centre already underway. I enjoy lettings as it continues to present new challenges. In my free time I like to attend my favourite Bikram yoga class in Chiswick. u

Charlotte’s has recently opened its new bistro. It offers a lovely menu throughout the day and is set in an atmospheric old building. SPORTS AND RECREATION:

Having once been home to Tennis legends of yesteryear (Fred Perry and Dorothea Lambert Chambers), Ealing has many options for budding tennis players. Ealing Lawn Tennis Club and St Columba’s are both long standing clubs in the area. u

FAMOUS PLACES London hides a plethora of celebrity homes. These are the most recent to come on the market

LONDON’S GRAND DESIGNS STAR

ome people might use a stair-lift to get from one floor to the other, but Kew House has a fun slide to get its owners downstairs super-quick. This modern home – one of the finalists in Grand Designs: House of the Year in 2015 – has a huge basement which includes a children’s play area that you can get down to on stairs or a wooden slide. The site was originally a bunch of derelict garages before it was bought by award-winning structural engineer Tim Lucas six years ago for £400,000. The site’s transformation into a dream home now on the market for £3.8 million with The Modern House was featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs in November 2015, and was also shortlisted for a Royal Institute of British Architects’ award, handed out each year to the best new house designed by an architect in the UK. Set behind the façade of a Victorian stable, it has two gabled wings around a central courtyard. The property is covered with prefabricated steel, studded with holes to mimic the effect of dappled light through the branches of trees. The Modern House 020 3795 5920

Fiona was famous as the person who discovered supermodel Erin O’Connor, although Ellis has also worked with Claudia Schiffer, Helena Christensen and Elizabeth Hurley. But it’s clearly time to move on. Ellis’s home in Ascot is now up for sale. The property has been remodelled in her somewhat unusual style and includes a leopard-print clad toilet and ceilings covered in crocodile embossed wallpaper. It’s a two bedroom flat on Spring Grove in Ascot and is being sold for £1.1 million. Savills, Sunningdale 01344 626 162

Hitchcock had a lot to thank the capital for; he directed over 20 films here DIAL M FOR MAISONETTE?

lfred Hitchcock has been dead for nearly 40 years but his reputation as one of the world’s greatest film directors survives very much intact. But the cigar-chomping mogul was not always grateful for his early years spent working in London, where he established himself before moving to Hollywood in 1939. The Dial M for Murder director once said that in London “the sky was always grey, the rain was grey, the mud was grey and I was grey”. Hitchcock had a lot to thank the capital for; he directed over 20 films here, using familiar backdrops such as Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus. But who could blame him for preferring the Californian sun, where he worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Janet Leigh. While living in Los Angeles Hitchcock developed a taste for grand residences and eventually bought a seven-bedroom colonialstyle mansion in Bel Air. But when living in London his home was much more modest. From 1926 until 1939 he lived in a shabby maisonette flat

THE PATH THAT LEADS TO WISDOM

ven as his life entered its twilight years, comedian and film star Norman Wisdom kept the jokes coming, quipping that “as you get older three things happen – the first is your memory goes, and I

can’t remember the other two”. In 1915 Wisdom was born in London into a poor family and at the age of 25 ran away to join the army. After surviving the war, Wisdom’s talents for comic entertainment were spotted and by 31 he was a professional entertainer and soon after, a film star and comedian. His most famous character was Norman Pitkin, an incompetent junior employee to boss ‘Mr Grimsdale’ in a variety of different settings, which won Wisdom fans all over the world including, most improbably, Albania. His childhood home is now for sale. It’s at 91 Fernhead Road in Maida Vale where the Wisdom family lived during the 1920s. Norman, his brother Fred and their parents, lived in a single room. The one bedroom apartment is now on the market for £449,000. Dexters 020 7266 2020

hen Dr Who launched during the 1960s there were fears that a science fiction drama wouldn’t be popular and the first episode was discreetly advertised in the Radio Times. But, despite an opening night that clashed with coverage of the JFK assassination, Doctor Who was a hit, and half a century later there’s still great excitement. It’s just been announced that this year’s festive outing will feature a guest companion, ahead of next year’s new series. In the 60s, cast members rehearsed at a pub on Reckitt Road, Chiswick, which was later converted into houses. One of them, with three large bedrooms is on the market for £1.75m. I

spent some of my early years in Ealing and have been travelling since a young age – my father ran a business in New York. When I wasn’t travelling with him, he would always send me postcards from wherever he was – it was like a library of exotic places. It sowed the seeds of my love of discovering new countries and cultures and led to me spending a gap year working in Paris and New York and then, after graduating from university, working for an investment bank in Japan and Holland before returning to the UK. As it turned out, these experiences were an excellent grounding for working in international property. When you live and work overseas, you learn that every nationality has a different way of doing business. In my experience, I find that Hong Kong is different in the way it conducts business to mainland China, Malaysia is different to Singapore, Qatar is different to Abu Dhabi, the US is different to Canada. I think to be successful, you have to know how to adapt. This is perhaps the most important thing I’ve learned

Without doubt, the draw of the River Thames forms a natural focus to the area

from my travels. Looking through our records I discovered that we currently have landlords from 26 different countries who own property in West London. When it comes to international tenants, the figure is even higher. Increasingly, areas like Ealing, Kew, Brentford and Richmond, are where London’s professionals are choosing to live, opting for a village feel. New residential developments are the driving force behind this change in the way many of us are choosing to live, offering a sophisticated lifestyle that only a few years ago was the preserve of prime London. Unsurprisingly, we are seeing the highest rental demand in these smart property developments so Kew Bridge, a mixed-use development by UK

developer St George, was the obvious location for our fifteenth lettings branch in London. With so many overseas clients, we work hard to ensure we can speak to as many of them as possible in their own language. In-house we now have staff speaking 30 languages including Arabic, Mandarin and Russian. Having a global perspective is an intergral part of our business with our ever expanding network of international offices – we set up our first one in Hong Kong, in 1995, followed by Singapore and we now have offices in India and Malaysia. Rental demand is always strong in areas like Ealing, Chiswick and Richmond, although rents are fairly static at the moment, we’re seeing a high number of applicants. Rental demand in Brentford at the Kew Bridge scheme and at nearby Kew Bridge West, goes from strength to strength and we often see young families and couples moving here on the recommendation of friends. Without doubt, the draw of the River Thames forms a natural focus to the area attracting a new generation of renters who are discovering its appeal every day. u

But getting permission for a basement conversion is getting more difficult as many London borough planning departments crack down on the more ambitious projects. This year Westminster established a ‘sub squad’ team to process complaints about basement conversions, and introduced a tax to be levied

storey dig-downs that are easy to spot outside a home. Usually, an electric conveyor pokes out of a downstairs window, wet clay clattering from the netherworld below into a skip. “The really big projects that you see in the papers are all about having a basement swimming pool or cinema, but most of our work is about freeing up space and making a period property a usable family home,” says Simon Haycock. “Quite often our projects are about moving the utility areas of a house downstairs and therefore freeing up the family areas above.” If you’re about to take the plunge and go big below, there is plenty to think about. Creating a basement from scratch is a significant engineering project and some experts say it can be more complicated than building a new home. But if you can get it right and complete your project, then the benefits of a basement conversion are more than just aesthetic. Trevor Abrahamson, of estate agent Glentree, says that while it costs approximately £300 per foot² to build a basement, it can add between £1,000 and £6,000 per foot² to the value of the property, when complete. u

ore and more of us are hearing the call of the countryside and upping sticks from London’s busy streets. But where are we all going? The number of Londoners selling up and moving out increased by over 60% last year, according to research agent Hamptons International. This would appear to be a collective raspberry to London’s frenetic lifestyle as urbanites looking for space, a less competitive school enrolment system and less pollution vote with their feet. But it’s not just families cashing in their London equity. Hamptons International’s figures show that one in six of those escaping to the country are first-time buyers prepared to run the gauntlet of commuting into London to secure an affordable home. So where are the hotspots? Surrey envelopes much of SW

The area is treasured for features including Barnsbury Primary school, Woking College, Woking Park and the fact that you’re within touching distance of the town’s green belt.
