his month is all about design. All over London,
designers are exhibiting their work at large-scale events that span fashion, furniture, textiles, lighting and a vast array of accessories. It’s enormously exciting that interiors giant Decorex has set up home in Syon Park, where its world-leading exhibitors will be providing inspiration and setting trends for the season. And in King’s Cross there’s designjunction, now in its sixth year, which is much more than just a fair – it’s an entire creative village offering spaces to eat, drink and shop as well as encounter a wealth of emerging designers alongside all the established names. London Design Week spans venues all over town, while London Fashion Week attracts the world’s style police to assess the capital’s sartorial developments.

And at home in west London, we are celebrating some homegrown design in the form of the iconic Brompton bicycle, produced in Brentford for many years, until increasing demand led it to move to larger premises in Greenford. With most staff working with a mile or two of the factory (and commuting on Bromptons, naturally), it’s a true west London operation with a global following. We visited the factory and enjoyed a spin on one of the stylish folding bikes. Design aside, September heralds the beginning of term and the end of the summer, so here’s to the new academic year. We hope you enjoy the issue. ◆

2011 - when we presented just 30 brands in a basement venue in Central London - the show has grown to more than 200 worldrenowned contemporary design brands. This year, the show is going to be even bigger and better at our new location in King’s Cross. Over the course of six years we have built up a reputation for occupying some of the most challenging and ambitious spaces in central London from a 40,000 sqm disused sorting office to a derelict design school last year. Now we are taking over an entire site, with public realm outdoor spaces making it even more accessible. King’s Cross has undergone one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in the UK and is now one of the coolest and most connected destinations in London. It’s the ideal setting to take the show to the next level. If designjunction is at the cutting-edge of design, King’s Cross is at the cutting-edge of the future, encapsulating our core brand values and personality. For the first time, we will be building temporary outdoor structures at King’s Cross as well occupying existing indoor spaces. One of the most impressive sites is on Lewis Cubitt Square, where we plan

to build a two-storey pavilion and have commissioned Satellite Architects to design a monumental façade in front of the structure. The façade will be 70m long by 7m high made up of 4,000 individual GRID cubes with reflective mirrored surfaces. Last year we occupied two sites in central London that allowed us to have a dedicated retail venue and a dedicated venue for trade. This year, designjunction will occupy four locations, creating a mini city with different social quarters for eating and drinking, entertainment, exhibitions, business and pleasure. There is also plenty of shopping from more than 60 boutique pop-up shops, not normally found on the high street.
Q: What are the highlights of this year’s event for you? A: One of the biggest highlights is the move to our new home. Rather than taking over an existing venue we will be occupying an entire site. Key highlights include the customdesigned red monopoly-style houses we are building on Granary Square. Ten of these houses will be filled with immersive design concepts. Under the Canopy area, visitors can experience some of the best shopping from fashion and jewellery to glassware, ceramics and books. One We Made Earlier will be
about art and design. My mind worked in a creative way due to my dyslexia. It allowed me to think more laterally. I loved anything to do with art. At school I would spend lunch time in the art workshop painting, making or drawing things. Weekends were spent going to art galleries. I then did a year at art school and a degree in history of art. I was also inspired by grandfather, who worked in both fashion and retail. The combination of commerce and design felt like a natural fit.
Q: What designers and styles do you admire? A: Scandinavian design is the style I

Scandinavian design has an understated aesthetic. It’s also affordable, functional and made using natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. I am also a huge admirer of Jasper Morrison, it’s the simplicity of his work that I love. Very minimal.
Q: There’s a new focus this year on dyslexia in design. How did that arise and what is it? A: This is a subject matter very close to my heart. I grew up with dyslexia. At the time, I couldn’t understand why people at my school were miles ahead of me academically. I naturally gravitate towards the arts. It was a subject matter I was good at without any

restrictions on my creative ability. Dyslexia led me down the path of art and design. In some respects it has defined me as a person. When I was approached by Jim Rokos to host an exhibition on Dyslexic Design I immediately said yes. The exhibition, curated, organised and driven by Jim, aims to explore the connection between dyslexia and the creative industries. Looking at the positive effects as well as the challenges that people face working with a learning difference. The exhibition’s main goal is to remove the stigma of dyslexia and reveal it as a gift. It will look at how dyslexia affects a person’s lateral and visual thinking. Dyslexic Design will showcase the work of many designers and illustrators such as Sebastian Bergne and Kristjana S Williams who say dyslexia has enhanced rather than limited their creativity.

Q: How much work goes into organising designjunction? A: Honestly - a lot. This is partly because we take over ambitious venues in London. As you can imagine these spaces present all sorts of challenges. We have occupied a disused Tramshed, old sorting office, school and now an entire site. I can’t complain because it makes the show so exciting and interesting to work on each year. We never stand still. Each year has to be bigger and better than the previous year. I wish we had more than 12 months to work on it. I have an incredible team around me.
My home is like a showroom advert for designjunction. This is the problem when you work on a show like this, you want to buy everything for your home. My kitchen/lounge area is filled with Scandinavian brands from Carl Hansen dining chairs and lounge seating to String shelving. I’ve even got birch trees installed to give a wood-like aesthetic. Pendant lighting across the space is from brands such as Artemide, Nyta and Innermost. Furniture from Modus, Kartell and Moroso. Objects from Moooi, Utopia & Utility, Tom Dixon the list goes on…. u

ou see them everywhere. With bicycle commuting sharply on the rise, the distinctive smallwheeled Brompton is seen all over London, which is apt since Brompton is the only bicycle actually manufactured in the capital. Not that it’s just a London thing: 80% of the iconic folding bikes are sold outside the UK, with South Korea making up the biggest export market. Despite its being one of the most expensive two-wheelers on the market, sales of the Brompton continue to rise, so much so that the west-London based factory has moved its Brentford operation to a much larger new space in Greenford, where it is set to produce an impressive 47,000 bikes this year. So Greenford is where I find myself, stepping off the Central Line with my borrowed Brompton, folded for the tube and then unfolded on the platform for the short cycle to the factory. I am here for a tour, not knowing what to expect, and Brompton’s Nick Charlier is here to show me around. The Brompton story started in the 1970s with an entrepreneur who battled against the odds to put his invention

There are plenty
of MISCONCEPTIONS about the BIKE - that the small wheels MAKE IT SLOW, that the folding mechanism makes it WOBBLY, or that it could COLLAPSE
into production, even when nobody thought it would work. Andrew Ritchie had studied engineering at Cambridge but was ingeniously making a living selling flowerpots (buying them in south London for a pound and selling them in west London for two) when he met someone who was trying but failing to make a folding bike. Ritchie figured that he could improve on his idea, and in his flat opposite the Brompton Oratory he designed a basic version of the bike we know today. Not that the folding bike itself was new – a basic concept had been around since WW1, working on a principle of a clumsy single central fold. The current Brompton is little changed from its initial design: a neat three-way fold involves the back wheel flicking underneath itself to meet the front wheel turned backwards. The bike was briefly put into production in the early 1980s, after Raleigh had declined to take it on, branding it uneconomical, which it was, and only 60 bikes were made before the business folded (no pun intended). Several years later, a new investor materialized and manufacture began properly, with bikes made in London. It soon became clear that people were prepared to pay for a hand-made, high class product.
18 05/08/2016 12:11
ARTS & CULTURE / DESIGN
There are plenty of misconceptions about the bike, says Charlier. That the small wheels make it slow, that the folding mechanism makes it wobbly, or that it could collapse underneath you.
All of these are proved wrong during my two-week dalliance with a borrowed six speed model in a bright Lagoon Blue. Granted, unpacking the thing is daunting and the youtube instructions aren’t immediately easy to follow for someone to whom such things don’t come naturally. But very soon I have mastered the fold and unfold, and even allowing for a few moments of indecision at each stage, I am easily clearing it in under two minutes. Actually 30 seconds is the usual timing. You couldn’t ride it if you hadn’t secured it properly, so there’s no sense that it’s going to come undone or even come loose. And the ride is smooth, speedy and seamless, not wobbly and in no way inferior to a regular, non-collapsing bike. But what the Brompton is judged on primarily is its pure practicality. Put it on the train to halve your commute or just
19 Chis_Septrmber2016_Brompton.indd 19
to avoid the rain. You can fly with it, pack it in the smallest car boot, store it under your desk at work and never worry about theft. The only thing to contend with is its weight, something that is constantly being worked on. Would you sacrifice gears in order to save a few grammes? And how good are you at carrying a bike upstairs, potentially along with a bag, while still keeping a hand free to wave your ticket at the barrier once you get to the platform?. The most basic of all the Bromptons – single speed, no mudguards, no rack, comes in at 10.4 kilos. Adding six gears equates to another kilo, a luggage rack and mudguards another 700g, a dynamo hub a further 400g – so quite soon you’re at 12.5 kilos, which doesn’t sound all that heavy but when you’re carrying it up and down stairs, it all adds up. The new titanium frame comes at an extra £600 but only shaves 700g off the total, so there are many factors to – literally – weigh up. Reducing the weight of it is the factory’s ongoing effort. The verdict? The Brompton – as testified by its international fan base (there are fan-run Brompton clubs around the world) is as good to ride as any non-folding bike and its detailed, wellbuilt specification makes it a lasting piece of quality design. And an important part of London's design legacy too. brompton.co.uk

ersonally, I have always loved a print with people in it. Figures of any kind on a summer dress are an immediate sell for me, though unfortunately they're quite rare. Flower prints, paisley, even birds, are everywhere. But it's not often that you find a blouse embellished with tiny surfers, ballerinas, tennis players or girls in bikinis. And this is neither a children's collection (as proven by the karma sutra print) nor is it too cute. French label G.Kero is sold internationally with a cult following and its cotton shirts and blouses, bomber jackets and sweatshirts come in prints that are unlike any others

ant to look your best but can’t seem to find the time to get to all those separate appointments? We have found the solution. From blowdrys to brazilians, Shellac to spray tan, Blo Bar have got you covered. They are luxury in both design and service, always willing to go above and beyond to ensure you feel relaxed and pampered. Walking in, I am warmly greeted by Rima who takes me downstairs for my manicure. Below the vast Blow-Dry bar is the salon area which boasts an entire wall solely dedicated to nail polishes. Spoilt for choice, I went for Rima’s recommendation of a neutral, powder grey. In the room next door there is a colourful crèche staffed by trained child-carers and fitted with CCTV, so busy mums can enjoy some me-time while keeping an eye on their little ones via one of Blo’s individual Samsung tablets. When my manicure is complete, Rima offers to thread my eyebrows for me after telling her about a particularly unfortunate experience I had recently which left me looking permanently quizzical. She does an excellent job and I am pleasantly surprised by how effortlessly she reshapes them. After only an hour I am done, though I could have very easily stayed for the whole day. With their signature Blow-Dry still to try, I will definitely be returning soon. ◆ ● BLO BAR 81 Chiswick High Road, W4; 020 8995 3455 b1obar.com

Bee Safe
Duckworths of Chiswick is a small, low-tech local brand that’s expanding its offering. Absolutely visits its domestic headquarters Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e
‘P
eople always say, wow, bees in Chiswick!,’ says Annette Duckworth. ‘But I think there have always been bees in Chiswick. Whoever planted this area 70 years ago [she waves in the direction of Grove Park Terrace] knew what they were doing. It’s the perfect mix of limes and acacias. They must have been beekeepers.’ Everybody knows that bees are of paramount importance for the entire ecosystem, but without wanting to sound like a complete neophyte, it strikes me that bees are amazing. After a morning in Chiswick with Annette, naïve urban innocent that I am, I emerge evangelized by the sheer awesomeness of the bees’ natural order. I know I am late to this party. Googling ‘why are bees important?’ is a common search; if you don’t know the answer I suggest you google it too. It’s to do with pollination, mostly, and therefore the entire food chain depends on them. But thanks to factors including pesticides
and viruses, bees are under threat and everybody needs to be mindful. ‘We must protect the trees because they are the foundation of healthy bees,’ says Annette, herself a beekeeper in her W4 garden. She explains that since 1990, bees have been unable to survive without beekeepers, on account of a specific virus that is killing them in huge numbers. The politics of hive society are incredible. The lifespan of the summer
WITHOUT WANTING to sound like a complete NEOPHYTE, it strikes me that BEES ARE AMAZING bee (shorter than its winter sibling) means that it is really making honey for its grandchildren. And in terms of personality, the queen bee, for instance, has characteristics that influence the workers, so according to Duckworth, ‘you need a queen that’s been bred to be less
37 CHIS_Sep16_DUCKWORTHS.indd 37
swarmy’ and if you get the wrong one, ‘you kill her and start again.’ It sounds very Shakespearean, apart from the fact that these bees are bought on the internet and arrive in the post. Despite the fact that I am officially here to watch her make soap, my mind keeps wandering into her garden, where the hive is. Her brand, Duckworths, has expanded from locally produced honey into hand-made soap, and as she talks me through the process of bringing oil to the perfect temperature and causing a chemical reaction with caustic soda before leaving a mould of liquid soap to solidify in the aga, I am still mentally marveling at a species that can mobilise its army so successfully on a single collective mission, all of them selflessly conspiring to preserve their queen’s strength. Last year Annette produced 400 pounds of honey in her garden, her best harvest in five years of beekeeping. She has high hopes for this year’s crop, and in the meantime her soap business is thriving and growing. Look out for the produce locally. duckworthsofchiswick.com

Advanced techology for stunning skin from the West London Dermatology Centre in Chiswick
n recent years the number of cosmetic surgery treatments has decreased as new methods of non-surgical treatment have increased significantly. A wide range of options are now available to those who want to look younger but without the risks and, in some cases, obvious signs of surgery. We look at a number of these treatments offered at West London Dermatology Centre.
BOTOX AND DERMAL FILLERS
u Now well established these injectable procedures are the most popular in
the non-surgical market. The injection contains a very small amount of toxin that locally weakens the muscle in the face to soften frown lines and wrinkles with a remarkable smoothing effect on the skin. Dermal fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm are used where collagen levels have depleted to ‘refill’ and plump the skin, also smoothing out lines.
LASERS AND INTENSE PULSED LIGHT
u A less invasive approach is the use of laser or Intense Pulsed Light. The Regenlite laser at West London Dermatology Centre has been proven
39 CHIS_April16_SLIM_GYM_adv.indd 39
u Exfoliating the dead skin cells at the surface of the skin can be achieved by either mechanical exfoliation using diamonds and crystals or by a fruit acid peel. This level of exfoliation leaves the skin surface smooth and promotes accelerated turnover of skin cells allowing new fresh, more youthful skin to the surface. It can also help clear out congestions in the pores. The Fusion Facial system at West London Dermatology Centre combines diamond exfoliation, ultrasonic infusion of hyaluronic acid and low level laser for collagen production to deliver immediate rejuvenating results in one hour.
COSMECEUTICAL SKINCARE
u Medical Grade skincare contains high levels of active ingredients that deliver results. Formulated to target specific skin concerns such as acne, ageing and pigmentation, the correct regimen and skincare can on its own achieve remarkable results restoring the skin’s health and vitality. The Skinova range contains high levels of antioxidants but without the harmful elements such as parabens, chemicals, sulphates and preservatives that you find in other skincare.
CONSULTATION
Often optimal results are achieved by a combination of the above and the experienced team at West London Dermatology Centre can advise on an appropriate programme to suit your skin and your goals. The contemporary approach at this clinic is for everyone who wants to look and feel good about their skin.

FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEW
From outside, it looks like something out of Harry Potter
The Marlborough Magical, quirky and cosy: it must be Richmond's popular riverside pub
and goats cheese pearl barley risotto looks particularly tempting. But after some deliberation we plump for confit pork belly with pearl barley, wild mushrooms and cyder sauce and pan-fried hake fillet with capers and brown shrimp butter sauce. Both are delicious and I have to confess that my portion is so substantial that I have difficulty fitting it all in, particularly with some temping puddings on the menu. Although when it comes to it, my partner happens to order the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted, a salted caramel, so I eat half of his as well. u

rom outside, the Marlborough looks like something straight out of the pages of Harry Potter. Intriguingly historic, quirky and cosy. But when you get inside it’s even more magical because the place is a Tardis. By the time we reach our table we’ve passed through three large spaces, each carefully decorated for their different purposes. I’d like to be able to linger in the relaxed pub/bar area but we wind our way through to a beautiful, light garden room to our table. The garden itself is even bigger and even though I’m told it can seat 400, somehow it still manages to feel quite intimate. We are welcomed heartily by Karen, the proprietor, who is understandably proud of her freshly refurbished establishment,
which only reopened in February. She recommends a delicious bottle of Rose, my favourite at this time of year, and aptly named Whispering Angel it’s the herald of a lovely evening. The menu focuses on some traditional dishes: fish and chips, sausage and mash, but adds a twist of sophistication to each. The staff make us feel really well looked after and I get a recommendation of scallops to start. I love scallops so I don’t need much persuasion – and here they’re accompanied by a satisfying combination of salty prosciutto and creamy celeriac puree. The only tiny niggle was that they were missing their coral, which always makes me a bit sad. We’re spoilt for choice with our mains and I nearly choose a vegetarian option as these are so refreshingly creative, a sweet potato

LA DOLCE VITA Helen Baron discovers family-friendly luxury in the Sicilian countryside Wo r d s h e l e n b a r o n

icily looms larger in the imagination than it does on the maps. The largest island in the Med is still a bit of an afterthought, geographically speaking: a stone rolling off the toe of the Italian boot. But despite its comparatively small size (and historical problems with unemployment and poverty), Sicily has made a strong mark on the global culture. Think of it and you probably think of glittering sea and lemon groves; of elderly mafiosi holding court from sun-bleached villas; of nonna’s cooking and la dolce vita; of huge, happy families gathering under olive trees for al fresco lunches on sweltering summer afternoons. You probably think of the young Vito Corleone in Godfather II. Or a Dolmio advert. Yet contemporary Sicily isn’t quite the cliche the moviemakers and ad-men would have you believe. What it is – and what a new generation of holidaymakers are realising – is a living, breathing island starting to dig out its true identity from under the rubble of the last century’s tumbled mythologies. This means it has sore spots as well as strong-points: for every picturesque clifftop town and sleepy fishing village there’s a concrete-colonised strip of shoreline that you’d really rather forget. But with a little research and preparation, it remains a pretty great destination for a

European family holiday – especially if you visit in June or September, just before or after the high season crowds. Sicily offers various practical positives for families: a Mediterranean climate, Western European infrastructure, great but reassuringly familiar cuisine. For Londoners with babies in tow, the three-hour flight time is another major attraction: before this, the only flying we’d done with our daughter
was a brief, ninetyminute hop to France; she behaved like a tyrant much of the way and we were anxious about longer-haul trips. A three-hour flight to Sicily felt like a manageable next step in her training. Another draw was The Thinking Traveller, the company through which we found our villa. Luxury holiday rental specialists focusing on three or four Mediterranean hotspots, The Thinking Traveller covers everything from advance booking of activities, experiences and pool heating to how exactly you’ll reach your villa on arrival. It meant there was little for us to worry about except the baby. Before we left they even sent us their own book-length guide to Sicily in the post, alongside the

most detailed information about our villa, its location and amenities that we could have hoped for. After a little deliberation and with The Thinking Traveller’s advice, we chose Casa Luza, a large, modern villa at the top of a winding country track about an hour from Catania airport and ten minutes from the Baroque town of Noto. To say we were happy with our choice would be an understatement. Contemporary yet homely, luxurious in the most chic and unpretentious way, Casa Luza married the best of modern Sicilian country living – beautiful infinity pool, hill gardens, cropped lawn and stately courtyard entrance – with the kind of slick amenities and gadgets (basement gym, ice machine, home cinema system, multi-room audio) you’d expect in a state-of-the-art American pad. With six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, indoor and outdoor kitchens and a master suite shower the size of a studio flat, the villa sleeps 12 people and benefits from daily housekeeping. This proved just as well,

because we were a party of four couples with three babies between us – things might have tended towards the chaotic if we weren’t so well looked after by the lovely housekeepers. We were also pleased to find that the pool had a large sunbathing platform at one end, so the little ones were able to acclimatise themselves to the water without getting out of their depth. One upside of staying somewhere so beautiful is that you can forge an entirely
51 Chis_September16_Travel.indd 51
memorable and relaxing holiday without having to do much: we spent a good twothirds of our week enjoying group meals on the terrace and playing in the pool. Of course, when you do decide to leave the villa, Sicily offers more than enough to satisfy the curious. A few minutes from Casa Luza is Noto, an architectural wonder of honey-coloured stone and gorgeous Baroque intricacies, while the road to the coast takes you past the Vendicari nature reserve with its seasonal flocks of flamingos. Some of the smaller local towns betray the malaise inevitable in an island so bedevilled for much of the last century by crime and corruption. But the real Sicily shines through in the romantically dilapidated facades of central Syracuse and the flowering piazzas of Taormina, a picturesque millionaire's playground clinging precariously to the cliffs. We are as adventurous as the next bunch, but not once did we regret returning to our home-from home. The Dolmio advert wasn’t that wide off the mark after all.
Casa Luza, available exclusively through The Thinking Traveller, (020 7377 8518, thethinkingtraveller.com/thinksicily) costs from £3,646 per week. Price includes all sales taxes, electricity and gas, linen, bath towels, pool and beach towels, a comprehensive written guide to the villa and the local area, Think Traveller’s awardwinning service and specialist knowledge pre and post-booking, 24/7 local support and the opportunity to book unique Think Experiences. MAKING SHAPES Revered designer Neisha Crosland can now add author to her résumé. Absolutely caught up with her to discuss her new book W o r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s Book photography Misha Anikst
CATHERINE HALES: What inspired you to write ‘Life of a Pattern’? NEISHA CROSLAND: I moved studio five years ago, and while clearing and sorting out my archives I noticed not only that there were many recurring themes in my work but that the sources of inspiration behind the designs also had interesting stories. I like to think of pattern as a link to the past; as with a good story, it gets passed down through the ages. I wanted the book to be a visual narrative in which, to quote Misha Anikst, the book’s designer and photographer, ‘the designs must leap out of the page and grab attention’. I wanted to create a book as a homage to all of the things that have influenced me. CH: Why did you decide to become a designer of textiles? NC: A missed turn in the V&A on my way to a lecture found me in the Ottoman galleries and I knew immediately that I wanted to do textiles. Despite their age, the bold, rich graphics on velvet and silk looked so utterly modern. CH: What is your design process? NC: I have a pinboard where I pin all of my sources of inspiration – everything from a ribbon or postcard, to a photograph of a painting or ceramic, or even just a doodle;

I WANTED TO create a book AS AN HOMAGE to all the things THAT HAVE INFLUENCED ME seemingly random pictures of things that have caught my eye. I also write notes and pin them on the board. I then live with these inspirations until I get an urge to do something with them. I start to sketch some ideas roughly in a sketchbook and
I find that it really helps to give them names at this point. The ideas will join up with each other and evolve or just get edited out; it’s a survival of the fittest or best idea! When I’m confident that I’m on to something I’ll map it out life-size – not computer screen size – in black and white or pencil since it’s important to get the structure of a design correct before I start colouring it. CH: How would you define your style? NC: I’ve been told it’s quite deco. I try to make my designs as minimal as possible with maximum impact, a discipline that maybe comes from the pre-digital days when every colour in a design cost money. I think the way I design is also inspired by my admiration for Ottoman and Japanese design, and the abstract art of the Russian Avant-garde. ‘Minimum line with maximum impact’ is my mantra. CH: You often mention the V&A; is it your favourite spot in London? NC: Well, I owe my calling to textiles to the V&A. I spent a lot of time there as a student, not only in the textile galleries but also among the ceramic collections and in the wrought iron metalwork galleries where I liked the black and white, positive/negative aspect of the metalwork.

matter how gorgeous the colours are. It’s also important to have an understanding of how the design will work on the end product since you can’t just plonk a pattern on something. You need to understand the medium and how the design will look, whether it’s upholstered onto a chair, decorating a fine china cup, flat on the floor for a rug, or draped around the neck in the form of a scarf.

CH: Are there any patterns in nature that particularly influence your work? NC: I find inspiration in everything from the checks on fritillaries and the shape of giant gunnera leaves, to ferns, ginkgo leaves, shells, malachite and coral. The photographer Horst P. Horst’s book Patterns from Nature and Karl Blossfeldt’s Art Forms in Nature have inspired me too. CH: What makes a successful pattern or textile? NC: A well-balanced repeat, combined with a scale that works. Ideally the colouration should be a surprise too. Good drawing is essential otherwise the design will always be unattractive no
61 SW_Aug2016_NesihaCrosland.indd 61
CH: Are there any other designers you admire? NC: I admire a wide range of designers spanning different eras, from current designers such as Georgina Von Etzdorf and Marthe Armitage, to Phyllis Barron and Dorothy Larcher for their 1930s textiles, and the 18th century silk designers James Leman and Anna Maria Garthwaite. There are also so many designers who do wonderful things but remain anonymous. CH: Is there a particular place in the world that inspires your designs? NC: Many places inspire me but mostly from cultures long gone. For example, I take inspiration from everything from 16th century Japanese kimonos

The list goes on!

CH: What made you decide to add rugs to your collection? NC: The Rug Company approached me at a House & Garden fair about twelve years ago. I had designed an installation using my wallpaper on the floor under a sheet of perspex. Christopher Sharp, co-founder of The Rug Company, spotted it and asked me if I’d like to design rugs. CH: How would you describe your London house? NC: It’s an oasis that was once a working mews and a fly tip! We’ve made the garden the central focus, with french windows looking out onto it. CH: What do you like to do in your free time? NC: I love doing a lot of pottering in the garden and house, as well as visiting galleries, trips to the cinema and opera, cooking and seeing friends and family. Any chance to travel is welcome too. u
Niall Clutton
CH: You speak very fondly of Camberwell College of Arts; was the school instrumental to your career? NC: Very much so. It taught me the process of getting a design from paper to cloth, the importance of drawing and of respecting the production process, whether it’s in a factory or by hand. That’s why I always like to stay close to the production process and to work with people who have the same approach, since a good design can so easily be ruined in the manufacturing. I find that it’s essential to have a say in how my
designs are developed onto products – whether they’re rugs, tiles, wallpapers or fabrics – to ensure beautiful results. CH: Did your stepfather Roald Dahl’s brilliant creativity feed into your own? NC: His love of the arts and the importance of inventing something to surprise people left a huge mark on me. He taught me that a different point of view is the only interesting point of view. My mother also instilled this in me, and she had a great eye for style and for the unusual.

hen Magdalen College School, Oxford, triumphed over Hutton Church of England Grammar School in the Debating Matters National Final at the end of last term, the standard of oratory was very high. Sixth-form students Tom Gould and Joel Stanley beat the former champions from Hutton Church at the events held at the Museum of London, arguing that there should not be limits to free speech on social media. Their teacher, head of politics at Magdalen College, Dr James Panton said: “My kids went further than I’d imagined they could and are obviously delighted. But more than that - the whole weekend is a testament to what we can do with smart young kids when we’re willing to push them to take themselves seriously. They’ve learnt more this weekend than in the preceding 12 months. And they loved it” Of course, ‘Top Public School Wins Debating Cup’ is not a surprising headline. The teaching of oratory skills has long been seen as the preserve of public schools, but a charity co-founded by a princess has been working with an inspirational east London school in an attempt to change this status quo. School 21 in Newham is a free school founded by Tony Blair’s former speechwriter Peter Hyman. Hyman has been very public in his belief that speaking skills should be at the heart of the school timetable, denouncing moves by Ofqual a couple of years ago when it decided that teenagers would no longer be awarded marks for speaking and listening in GCSE English. He said: “Speaking eloquently is a moral issue because to find your voice

If you can speak and articulate yourself properly that will happen. But it’s also the number one issue that employers put in all their surveys: they want good oral communication.” Pupils at School 21, which is in a very underprivileged area of London, are now learning to find their voices with the help of Big Change, a charity that supports young people with skills outside
69 Chis_September2016_EDUCATION_R.indd 69
a traditional academic curriculum. The charity was co-founded by Princess Beatrice and Sam and Holly Branson, scions of Richard. Princess Beatrice told a workshop of 11 and 12 year olds that she initially found school a “nightmare” where she “struggled” because of dyslexia. It was only when she went on to secondary school and joined the public speaking team that she felt more confident. Also taking part in the project was Karl Lokko, who as a teenager had been a south London gang leader. He said the day before he had taken his GCSEs, one of his friends had been killed. "He was murdered by my side," he said. But even being able to "denounce gangsterism" had meant having to learn a vocabulary and way of communicating he had never acquired growing up. Lokko, who read one of his poems to the pupils, said he had deliberately set about learning 10 new words a day underlining words he had not understood in books or articles and then looking up their meaning in a dictionary. Peter Hyman said speaking skills represented a major barrier to disadvantaged young people. Hyman warned of a "speaking deficit", adding the skills of "oracy" were at "the heart of social mobility". Too often poorer youngsters and their families lacked the confidence to speak up for themselves, he said. Hyman said schools should focus much more attention on helping young people express themselves verbally, not least in terms of improving their job chances. He also said speaking skills were linked to children’s sense of wellbeing. Princess Beatrice said: "We live in a world where everything is moving at such a fast pace. "You have to find an identity that's true to yourself. You really have to find your own voice." u

Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith has a strong tradition of bursaries, says its headmaster W o r d s D av i d G o o d h e w
W
hen I’m asked what Latymer Upper School has to offer its pupils, the description that comes to mind is; ‘a life-changing education that is academic, rounded and grounded’ – an apt phrase for our school’s ethos that also resonates with me on a personal level. My education was indeed life-changing. I was privileged enough to read Classics at Oxford - a wonderful experience, made all the more special by the fact that I was the first person in my family to go university. I was also one of only a very few boys from the comprehensive school I attended in west London to gain entry to Oxbridge. My life since then has been shaped by the opportunities education gave me as a child and it’s my ambition that a Latymer education should be available to bright children, regardless of their financial background. Fortunately, I’m working in a likeminded school. Latymer Upper has a very long tradition of educating academically able children from all walks of life. From Edward Latymer’s Will, written in 1624, which provided for the education of poor children of Hammersmith, through to the Direct Grant years when the majority of pupils studied here on a free place, Latymer has focused on the riches of intellect, rather than background, of its pupils. Numerous members of our large and vibrant community of highly intelligent, wellrounded and resourceful Latymerians were recipients of a free place. Many are eminent in their field and some are household names. But without the
It’s my ambition that a LATYMER EDUCATION should be available TO
BRIGHT CHILDREN regardless of THEIR BACKGROUND benefits of a free education at Latymer, society may have been denied the scientific contribution from the likes of Professor Richard Perham and Sir Harpal Kumar or the on-screen (and off ) charm of Alan Rickman or Hugh Grant. Talented Latymerians who would have been unable to join the school without financial help. When the Assisted Places scheme, which followed the Direct Grant system, ended in 1997, Latymer’s governors had

a choice. End 360 years of pretty close to needs-blind admission, or revolutionise the way in which we manage our pupil population? We chose revolution and in 2004 we opened the doors to our new Development Office, the aim of which was to fundraise for bursaries. It has been a remarkable journey. Twelve years ago our bursary pupil numbers had been reduced to 13. We now have 116 very bright children - all of whom have met our stringent academic criteria but who would be unable to study here without the help of a bursary. Of this figure, the majority receive over 75% support with 77 children on a free place. As educators, it’s exhilarating to see our pupils grow both academically and creatively into inquisitive, caring adults. Latymerians leave school armed not just with excellent A-Levels but also with a developed social conscience. And this is where our bursary programme is so vital. The benefits of the inclusivity that comes with bursaries are profound and offer valuable life lessons for all pupils. To be exposed to different viewpoints on issues that affect the whole of society is only possible if students learn in a more socially balanced environment. Much has already been achieved but I’m continually asking myself, what more can be done? My vision is for a school where the main requirement for entry is intellectual ambition, not wealth. Latymer is all about excellence and inclusion – I feel strongly that the two concepts should not be mutually exclusive. With the 400th anniversary of the Latymer Foundation eight years away, our goal is to be in a position by 2024 to offer full or partial bursaries to up to a quarter of our yearly intake. I like to think Edward Latymer would approve of this ambition. ◆

ost Brexit, I think it’s safe to say that, as an agent, I was a little concerned with the effect that leaving Europe would have on the local housing market. However, although buyers are more cautious, we are yet to see a decrease in transaction volume. Hammersmith and Chiswick both boast great schools, excellent transport links in and out of the city and a community spirit making it a great place for people to set up home. Around 70% of transactions around the area are domestic, so whilst people need to upsize/downsize or get onto the housing ladder, desirable areas such as ours will always be sought after. That said, it’s absolutely paramount that when instructing, you choose a knowledgeable and proactive agent that will maximise the true potential of your home and advise you on how best to deal with whatever the future may have in store for us. ◆

FAMOUS PLACES London hides a plethora of celebrity homes. These are the most recent to come on the market
WITNESS TO A MURDER MYSTERY QUEEN
t is now 40 years since Agatha Christie, the undisputed queen of murder mystery, died. But despite such a long time passing, she remains hugely popular. The Mousetrap, the longest running play in the world, shows no signs of ending and there are regular revivals of her two most famous characters – Hercule Poirot and Jane Marple – on TV. The Guinness Book of Records lists her as the bestselling novelist of all time, so far shifting two billion copies. Christie also made her mark in the London property market. She lived in several addresses including townhouses at Cresswell Place in Chelsea and in Camden. She also lived at 58 Sheffield Terrace from 1934 to 1941, where she is said to have written 16 of her novels including Death on the Nile. Her last London address was a flat at Swan Court in Chelsea where several novels including The Mousetrap were penned. A flat is currently available for sale within the building at £999,999. meeting is famous for heady fashion, and designer David Shilling is credited with starting the trend. His hats hit the headlines when he designed one for his mother to wear to Royal Ascot when he was 12. The huge headpiece caused a sensation, got his parents on the front pages and Shilling kept up the tradition for more than 30 years until her death in 1999. These days Shilling is more likely to be wielding a blowtorch than a needle, and lives in Monaco, creating specially commissioned steel sculptures. He’s now selling his five-storey house in Marylebone. It has two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a dining room and courtyard. It’s on the market for £1.95m. Beauchamp Estates 0207 722 9793; beauchamp.com

LIVE ABOVE A ROYAL PUB FAVOURITE
he Cross Keys is a pub in Chelsea, a former Georgianera watering hole that closed its doors recently after failing to attract enough punters. But what’s different about the boozer is that it’s had some very famous customers pass through its doors including painters JMW Turner, James Whistler and James Singer Sargent, writer Agatha Christie, poet Dylan Thomas, The Rolling Stones and reggae star Bob Marley. More recent patrons have included The Duchess of Cambridge, and Piers Morgan and Zac Goldsmith, who have both campaigned to save it. The pub, which is on Lawrence Street, was reopened earlier this year after a £500,000 refit and is now being run by Mark Dyer, who has connections to the royal family. The upper floors have been converted into four luxury apartments. The latest of these to come on the market is this two bedroom maisonette priced at £1.695 million. bedroom property in Edith Grove, lived in by Mick Jagger, Brian Jones and Keith Richards, is recreated at the Saatchi Gallery. The Stones went on to be not just one of the greatest bands history, but one of the most photographed, and one of those who frequently worked with them – a celebrated portrait photographer - used this property as his studio. The late 19th century building was originally converted in 1994 to create live work spaces for artists and craftspeople. Owned and used by a painter, it’s in Battersea and is up for sale at £1.59m. It’s divided between a light-filled double-height studio space and living accommodation with two bedrooms, a bathroom and open-plan kitchen/dining/living room. This can be completely or partially closed off from the studio, while windows let you look in from the upstairs bedrooms. There’s also a small courtyard garden at the back. The agent says the studio space could easily be converted into more bedrooms. The Modern House 0203 795 5920; themodernhouse.com

iving and working in the same area of the city has huge advantages for me, especially as a busy working mum of three young children. Over 23 years ago, fresh 'off the boat' from Ireland, I stumbled upon Ealing, known as “Queen of the Suburbs” and boy am I glad I did. It was July 1993 when Winkworth Ealing & Acton opened its doors and I was very lucky to be taken on as a Sales and Lettings Secretary. Throughout my many years at Winkworth, I have worked in various departments, from accounts to property management and ending in my current role as Lettings Manager. I fell in love with the area, so I decided to 'bite the bullet' and my husband and I bought our first home together in the locality. Over the years my interests have changed from social evenings in the lovely restaurants and bars of Ealing Broadway, to sunny afternoons spent in the various parks and green spaces that our area enjoys, playing football or rugby with all the family.
Ealing itself has an abundance of wonderful state and private schools
Going back to work after my first born was rather difficult as most mum’s will know. The guilt you feel when you’re not spending time with your little one is huge, and it is so important to find the right type of childcare to suit your lifestyle. Luckily, we are blessed to have found some wonderful nurseries in Ealing and the surrounding areas, and I was able to place my children in a nursery within a five minute walk of my office (which meant I could keep an eye on them throughout the day - checking on them on my lunch break!) After nursery, the next step was primary school. Again, in this wonderful area we are spoilt for choice and the children settled brilliantly. I now face the scary task of researching secondary schools! Ealing itself has an
amazing abundance of wonderful state and private schools bringing many families to the area for that reason alone. With two young and very sporty sons (who advise me they are going to be professional rugby and football stars one day), we are fortunate enough to have Ealing Trail Finders Rugby Club and Hanwell FC, where my husband and myself seem to spend the majority of our weekends, cheering on the sideline. In our household we are very much looking forward to the future and ongoing developments and projects in Ealing and Acton. The children are really excited about the prospect of a cinema in Ealing Broadway, which I must say, has been a long time coming. And my husband and I are excited about Crossrail coming to the area, which has really boosted sales prices and has put the area on the map. Crossrail may not have had such a big impact on rentals to date, but in the long term I believe it will have a huge impact on prices and popularity. Please feel free to contact me at Winkworth Ealing & Acton for advice on the local market. I guess I must sign off as I can hear my children calling me from a far! u

PARKS in LONDON Best parks to live near in London
F
or decades our city has been hailed as one of the greenest in the world. And that’s not surprising; it’s got eight million trees, 30,000 allotments, three million gardens and 3,000 parks and commons covering 47% of its surface area. And if Joanna Lumley gets her way, a garden bridge too. But green spaces have a monetary value for homeowners as well as a pleasing look. Research has shown that apartments near to parks are 8% more valuable than those that aren’t. And as London’s overcrowding problems have increased, we’ve all come to treasure our local parks. Here are some of the best.
RAVENSCOURT PARK, HAMMERSMITH, W12
Average property prices nearby: £533,700 for a flat, £1.17m for a house. 20.5-acre park that’s the flagship green space of Hammersmith & A Fulham and dates back to 1883. It’s famous for cedar and plane trees as well as its lake, and has won a Green Flag several times. It has a paddling pool, kids’ beach in the summer, garden centre, café, basketball and tennis courts, AstroTurf football pitch, bowling green, netball courts and five playgrounds.
CRANE PARK, RICHMOND, TW2
Average property prices nearby: £362,300 for a flat, £617,700 for a house. his 75-acre park is one of London’s less predictable. It’s between T Twickenham and Feltham and is a thin, long green space running alongside the River Crane. From the mid-18th century until 1927 gunpowder was made on the site, which was then sold to the local council and turned into a wildlife park. This is now home to a thriving colony of marsh frogs and a rare kind of water vole as well as a Shot Tower, which is thought to have been used to spot the fires that gunpowder production often started. Also, the River Crane is said to be one of London’s few remaining natural water courses.
Four bedroom semi overlooking Ravenscourt Park, £3.4m with Foxtons (020 8996 6000)
BEAVERSFIELD PARK, HOUNSLOW WEST, TW4
Average property prices nearby: £245,000 for a flat, £450,000 for a house. eaversfield Park is unusual because it’s one of the few parks to B be purpose-built since the Victorian era. It was opened in 1935 to give the residents of west London’s burgeoning suburbs somewhere to relax and exercise. The park became a ‘no-go zone’ at one point but in 2004 it was refurbished and has gone on to win Green Flag awards in 2008, 2010 and 2015. It has a cricket pitch, football pitches and tennis courts.
WATERLOW PARK, HIGHGATE, N6
Average property prices nearby: £811,726 for a flat, £2m for a house. aterlow Park is next to Highgate W Cemetery and is an achingly beautiful public park overlooked by a grand mansion which is now a café, education centre and events venue. Bequeathed to the public in 1889 by Sir Sidney Waterlow as a ‘garden for the gardenless’, today it includes several tennis courts, a nature area, playground, pounds and a kitchen garden. What hasn’t changed are the panoramic views.

PROPERTY / CYCLE CITY NIGEL LEWIS
CYCLE LANES London’s new homes move up a gear
I
f you drive to work in London then you are part of a disappearing breed, according to Transport for London (TfL), which says that by 2018 the number of Londoners cycling to work will outnumber those in cars. But if you are a London commuter, are you surprised? Anyone who travels to work by public transport will rant with barely-veiled anger about the high costs and the sardine-like experience you get in return. Cycling has downsides too, including the dangers of being among traffic. Recent figures from the Department of Transport reveal you’re 17 times more likely to be killed on a bike. But cycling is getting safer. A network of Cycle Superhighways is now in place, many of which separate cyclists from cars. Nine have been finished, with more on the plans. “As well as building new routes we’ve been going back and improving others, which in some cases involves adding segregation,” says TfL spokesperson Matthew Sparkes.
Even the home of football is twowheeled. Properties for sale and rent at Wembley Park Apartments have secure bike storage in the basements (020 3151 8601).
in the popularity of cycling on board,” says Guy Meacock, of London buying agency Prime Purchase. A recent example is 250 City Road, designed by Norman Foster and being built by Berkeley Homes. When completed the twin-towered development will feature 1,486 bike parking spaces for its 930 apartments - but feature just 200 car parking spaces. Pedal powered residents will also get to use a bike lift between ground level and the basement, where there will be a cycle workshop too. Quebec Quarter in Canada Water is due for completion this Autumn, and has taken a different tack. It’s developer, L&Q, has realised more serious cyclists want secure storage for their high-value road bikes. Consequently, its apartments come with storage cupboards specifically designed to hold a bike. “Potential buyers have commented they rarely see cycle storage in a new-build home as generous at those at Quebec Quarter,” says Mo Clarke of L&Q.
NEAR A SUPERHIGHWAY
The network of cycle superhighways means that other public transport options are no longer the ‘must have’. A good example of this is St Agnes Place, a development overlooking Kennington Park. It might be near two Northern Line stations, but rush-hour carriages on that line are often ram-jammed. Instead, the development is next to Cycle Superhighway Seven which runs from Colliers Wood to near Bank station.
CHAIN REACTION
But what happens when you get to work with your bike? Many cyclists say it is hard to find parking spaces inside or outside their offices, and that too often they return to find them gone; last year some 70,000 bikes were stolen in the capital, according to The London Cycling Campaign. To try and tackle this, the number of bike spaces required for a new office was doubled last year. So perhaps London looks set to become a cycling city.
SPACE FOR BIKES
The switch from cars to bikes is having an influence on the capital’s housing. It is now rare to find developments that offer a car parking space, and builders are attempting to attract two-wheeled buyers instead. “Developers in London are taking this rise
