ew things scream summer more than the escapist charm of the hot house. Immerse yourself in its exotic climes with our July fashion shoot, which celebrates the tropical appeal of palm prints and molten gold jewellery. Summer time also signals festival fever, but for those unwilling to travel far and wide, Cornbury Festival is the event for you. This glorious three-day festival of frivolity and live music is back with one of its strongest line-ups ever. Take a look at our What’s On page to read all about it. From festivals to food - we've rounded up five of the best picnic hampers for lazy sunny Sundays. Make soggy sandwiches a thing of the past. Or, if you’ll be topping up your tan on home turf, turn to page 44 to get serious wanderlust over our Indonesian escape. We’ve also talked tennis with Boris Becker and caught up with the queen of comedy Ruby Wax. I very much hope you enjoy the issue. Ciao!◆

Absolutely catches up with Boris Becker and Annabel Croft to talk tennis, success and SW19 Wo r d s H e l e n B r o w n Photography rebecca noonan

A

16-year-old Boris Becker was brought to San Lorenzo fresh from his success at Queen’s Club by tennis legend and coach, Ion Tiriac. He ordered a steak and pasta, followed by a lemon sorbet, and that became his pre-match ritual. It was what he ordered the night before his record-breaking singles victory in 1985. ‘That became my diet before every single match,’ Boris says, sitting now at a corner table in San Lorenzo Wimbledon over 30 years later with Annabel Croft. Founded in 1969, San Lorenzo is as much a part of Wimbledon heritage as tennis whites, strawberries and Champagne. Stationed at the bottom of the hill in this charming borough, the upmarket Italian boasts a list of diners that reads like the Wimbledon tournament leader board. Ghigo Berni and his brother Paolo – sons of Lorenzo and Mara Berni of the legendary San Lorenzo in Beauchamp Place – have fed just about every tennis champion of the past five

Becker's GENERATION was the last to ENJOY A DECENT DINNER and A DRINK after KNOCKING A FEW BALLS about on court

decades. Andre Agassi had the local mothers of Wimbledon fawning over him as he dined and Martina Navratilova hosted her retirement party here. Stan Smith comes here to eat and his picture hangs on the wall. Last year, the place was frequented by Maria Sharapova and the Williams sisters, to name just a few. The floors are tiled with cream slabs and the walls hung with quirky and considered art. Alongside Stan Smith are black and white shots of Nastase and Adriano Panatta. Beyond the bar is a second, quieter dining room and outside an al fresco area. We’re here with restaurant owner Ghigo and Annabel Croft - former British number one tennis player, presenter and frequent visitor to San Lorenzo. The three share an affectionate friendship that dates back to Boris and Annabel’s playing days. Tennis stars these days are arguably fitter than ever, thanks to fierce coaches and stricter diets, but what was impressive about the players of the young Tiriac generation was their ability to perform exceptionally on court whilst maintaining a spirited social life off it. Annabel and Boris reminisce fondly on

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE (FROM LEFT TO RIGHT) BORIS, ANNABEL AND GHIGO AT SAN LORENZO WIMBLEDON

GHIGO BERNI & his brother PAOLO have FED JUST ABOUT EVERY TENNIS GREAT of the past FIVE DECADES Wednesday nights spent at China White and dinners-turned-discos at Tramp. ‘I remember seeing Boris, hobbling around on crutches,’ Annabel recalls. ‘He was 16 and beating Bill Scanlon on court two, but he’d sprained his ankle. I remember going to a nightclub and he was there on his crutches,’ she says. ‘It was an era when players were much more photographed,’ Ghigo tells us. ‘We would have paparazzi here all the time, especially for people like Gabriela Sabatini and Annabel. I remember those days really fondly.’ It was during this time - when Boris was here pretty much every night, at the same table - that he met Ghigo and his family. ‘We’re talking 32-33 years ago. I don’t think I’ve eaten more food out of any other restaurant in the world,’ Boris says. Ghigo’s parents are the godparents of Boris’

children and there is even a pizza named after his son, Noah. Boris’ generation was the last to really enjoy a decent dinner and drink after knocking a few balls about on the court. ‘We underestimate - especially the top players - how much pressure they are under now,’ he says. ‘They’re all part of a bigger picture and that is the entertainment industry. You have kids and young adults watching - impressionable people - and the players become role models even though they don’t want to be,’ he explains. So did he realise the magnitude of what he’d achieved at the time? Not at all; he believes ‘it was the innocence of youth. It was the mid 80’s and sports didn’t really exist in Germany at the time, with the exception of a few footballers.’ When he hit that last brutal serve against Kevin Curren to lift the Wimbledon title, he became part of championship folklore. We look back now and see that of course he was always going to do well. Playing abilities aside, he had the mentality to completely disengage with outside pressures when on the court. ‘I think it’s one of the harshest sports in terms

17 USE_B&C_June17_BORIS BECKER.indd 17

of psychology, because you can’t really prepare for it,’ Annabel says. Boris credits Tiriac for this winning sports mindset. ‘He would say the purpose of today is to win the match. So what do we have to do today to win the match?’ Boris recalls. This strength of mind is the mark of a great player. Boris believes it’s part of the battle; 'You don’t win a tennis match just by hitting the ball,’ he says. ‘As a coach, I thought it was important to practise a lot, but I rated the match mentality much higher,’ he continues. This was certainly evident during his stint with Djokovic. After crashing out of the French Open final, Djokovic went on to lift the Wimbledon trophy under the guidance of Boris. ‘It’s how you react and deal with certain situations that counts,’ he tells us, ‘It’s not what you do on the practise court, it’s what you do in the match.’ Boris now lives in Wimbledon and his career has turned full circle. This year we’ll see him commentating at the tournament again. And as for coaching, will we see him return to the sidelines? ‘I wouldn’t rule it out, a few players have asked me - both male and female,’ he says. ‘Coaching is a very time consuming commitment though. I’m on standby for my family, but you also have to be on standby for the players,’ he explains. For him, the ‘weekend is the weekend’ which he enjoys at the home he has made here in Wimbledon, still eating three times a week at San Lorenzo. It’s easy to see why he, Annabel and so many tennis greats have developed such a fondness for the place. It has the alluring charm of an authentic Italian trattoria and with food to match. As a mecca for the tennis world, and with the Wimbledon fortnight on the horizon, this iconic eatery will always be an inherent aspect of Wimbledon’s heritage. ◆

’m really impressed with the ULTRAcel device. It combines ultrasound with radio frequency waves to tighten the skin, and stimulate production of new collagen and elastin. This nonsurgical, pain free and zero downtime treatment ticks a lot of boxes! Tackling wrinkles and tightening and lifting skin on the face and neck, it essentially gives you a mini facelift. Although one treatment gives immediate results, a course is generally recommended - this boosts collagen production, giving results that last for 12 to 18 months. Plexr is another clever device that achieves results without the need for anaesthetic or scalpels. Plexr heats tiny dots of skin to stimulate instant contraction and tightening. It’s also really versatile: as well as tackling sagging eyelids, under-eye bags, crows-feet and smokers’ lines, it can be used to treat acne scarring and remove moles. And finally, something we should all prioritise: nutrition. We know that nutrition is important for our health, but perhaps forget how important it is for our skin! I love the ANP ™ (Advanced Nutrition Programme) range of supplements. Nourishing the skin from within, each of the formulations targets specific nutritional needs. As they are designed to work in combination, you can create a nutrition plan tailored exactly to your needs. Ideal! ◆ D R M AYO N I

SCENTS OF ADVENTURE! High summer fragrances: a link to our happiest olfactory memories... W o r d s m i c h e a l d o n o va n

T

he first thing to remember about choosing a fragrance for very warm weather is that scent will travel further faster in heat, due to the rapid rate of evaporation from the skin. The scent molecules become airborne a lot more quickly and are simply a lot more plentiful in the summer. This means that the ‘throw’ or projection of the perfume is greater in higher temperatures and humid air traps scent and causes it to linger for longer. The scent receptors in our noses also work much better in warm environments, so our olfactory experience is much more intense - therefore fresh and joyous is the way to go! Take ‘Mediterraneo’ from Carthusia. This scent is over 600 years old and the combination of crushed lemon leaves and the juice plus green tea is so uplifting and sunny that they work from the plane to the beach, keeping you feeling cool, fresh and energised. Likewise ‘Debaser’, from the

THEY WORK from the PLANE TO the BEACH, keeping you COOL, FRESH and ENERGISED Brooklyn-based duo D.S. & Durga, uses an uplifting combination of coconuts and figs that is so elating you cannot wear it without smiling. This will work for every occasion - from casual days to dressy evenings. ‘Gallivant’ is a marvellous new British perfume house that creates scent realisations of the founder’s favourite cities around the world. Billed as ‘scents for urban explorers’ this collection features our own fair ‘ LONDON’, perfect for a stay-cation, and the bubbly, effervescent ‘Brooklyn’, which gets my vote with its zesty vigour that cuts through the humidity. Oranges and lemons, bergamot and magnolia with warm white woods and amber musk -

delicious. Another great choice is ‘London to Mumbai’ from the husband and wife team IDEO Parfumeurs. A classic cologne of lavender, citrus and herbs is given an injection of Indian spices that lifts it to a new level. Ginger, cinnamon and cloves add enormous vigour and depth, but this fragrance is always elegant. This is a great scent for city breaks: it is well travelled, sophisticated and optimistic. Hair fragrance is always a great choice for the summer; it lasts because hair is porous and also adds a unique glamour to the 'hair toss'. Thameen’s ‘Carved Oud’ is a scent based on the Indian ritual of Solah Shringar. The 16 stage ritual prepares royal women for public appearance - turning mortal woman into a goddess. Not only is this a mesmerising fragrance with cypress, iris and Indian Oud, but it also contains pro-vitamin B5, argan oil, honeyquat and keratin to ensure that hair looks and feels as good as it smells. Hierbas De Ibiza’s ‘Aqua de Colonia Fresca’ is the scent of this Mediterranean paradise and uses the indigenous flora. One of those addictive fragrances that you reach for over and over again, its punchy top of rosemary, verbena, citrus and lavender rolls across a herbal heart of sage and thyme. It is a celebration of summer, with a wonderfully balanced structure and truly unique base of orange flower, cinnamon and vanilla, proffering even more excitement at the end of the dry-down. A scent to dance with. Finally the lovely Neela Vermiere’s ‘Bombay Bling’ cannot fail to put you in holiday mode. Mango, lychee, cardamom and blackcurrant will sweep you away on a wave of joie de vivre. This is a dazzling fragrance full of sunlight and vivid colour - at its heart the golden triumverate of topical blooms, the gardenia, sambac jasmine and tuberose. Softly sensual and tantalisingly euphoric. Happy Holidays! ◆

SPARROW Lewisham welcomes its first high end restaurant offering Wo r d s J OY M O N T G O M E R Y

A

s a Lewisham local, it’s safe to say that the area isn’t generally known for its sophisticated fare. Previously outshone by its neighbours Blackheath, Greenwich and more recently Peckham - Lewisham has found itself catapulted into the gastronomical spotlight with the opening of Street Feast's Model Market. This sudden influx of foodies bookmarked this neighbourhood as an area to watch. Enter Sparrow. Situated on the edge of Lewisham’s busy roundabout, the placing of this new restaurant may seem odd, but within a few years it will be opposite a chic new development of flats and shops which is currently under construction. The latest

venture from husband and wife team Terry Blake and Yohini Nandakumar, Sparrow comes from good foodie stock. Seasonality is at the heart of the restaurant’s regularly changing menu. Sparrow’s small yet light-filled interior is the embodiment of design-conscious minimalism. The open kitchen takes centre stage and white-washed walls left bare - save for a specials blackboard and a collection of quirky illustrations. Teal tiles and touches of copper offer a cosy finish. Our menu comprised of a selection of 12 mains dishes and four puddings. On the waitress’ advice we opted for six sharing plates. Served on pretty blue and white china plates, each dish was deceptively simple, yet the intricate balance of flavours revealed clever and careful thought. One dish featured soft boiled eggs, duck and anchovy relish

41 DULWICH_July17_FOOD REVIEW.indd 41

and crispy shallots. The soft yolk was perfectly complemented by the rich and salty relish and sweet crunchy shallots. Another highlight was the whipped goats cheese, hazelnut crumb and honey leeks, which was served with bread for dipping. It was presented with an apparent improvised nonchalance - a dollop of leek here and sprinkle of crumb there - yet, when brought together the flavours truly sung. It would be a crime not to mention the fried rabbit and satay sauce and the pork belly, which were both incredibly moreish. Yet it was the bang bang beef ribs with anchovy-miso eggplant which truly stood out. Coming on a Fred Flinstone-worthy bone, the beef rib was melt in the mouth tender and lifted by a subtle spice rub, which balanced out the fatty flavour. The eggplant was a deliciously smokey accompaniment. We finished the meal with a baked lemon cheesecake with poached rhubarb and a dark chocolate and caramel tart. Although more conventional than some of the eclectic mains, they delivered just the right hit of sweet indulgence to the end of our meal. u

T

hey say “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”. Well the same could be said for Indonesia - a beguiling string of volcanic islands home to resplendent beaches, Komodo dragons and jungles sheltering elephants, orangutans and tigers. It has copious amounts to offer travellers and with thousands of islands, reveals itself to you more and more each trip. Having visited on a gap year I was thrilled to be returning to the country as a proper grownup, this time visiting Seminyak on Bali. We stayed at The Oberoi, a beachfront sanctuary boasting world-renowned service and some of the best sea views in Bali. An enormous swimming pool filled with stone turtle fountains takes centre stage in the grounds, surrounded by tasselled parasols that overlook a stretch of beach. You can peer at the crashing waves and the distant tourist touts from the extreme comfort of a sunbed predressed with towels and equipped with sun cream, cold water and frangipani scented facial mist. Heaven. Further back from the sea and dotted throughout beautifully tended gardens are traditional thatched-roof lanais and private villas.

INTERIORS INSPIRED BY NATURE AT NIHIWATU

VILLAS ARE BUILT INTO THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE

We opted for a luxury villa with a secluded courtyard garden, rock pond and raised dining pavilion, but the cheaper Lanai rooms are just as impressive. Inside you’ll find marble floors, enormous king-sized beds with hand-carved wooden headboards, four types of pillow, thick curtains to keep out the light and excellent air conditioning. A lovely bathroom contains more fluffy towels than you could ever need, plus two sinks and sumptuous bath scrubs, soaps and moisturisers. Throughout the rooms are well-thought-out details such as antimosquito spray, a day bag for the beach and both indoor and outdoor slippers. Dinner is a relaxed affair at the romantically-lit Kura Kura restaurant, named after the turtles that nest on the nearby sands. Expect European and Indonesian delicacies, with innovative dishes like seared Pacific scallops, Indonesian satay, udang goreng tiger prawns and Rijsttafel, a sumptuous legacy of Bali’s Dutch colonial tradition. Breakfast is served in the delightful, open-air Frangipane café where there is a huge range of options including duck or chicken eggs, pork or beef sausages and dozens of juices. Should you wish to leave the complex,

NIHIWATU is one of the MOST PRISTINE resorts on THIS PLANET Seminyak’s market, health cafes and boutiques are well worth a visit, as is Ubud, roughly a two-hour drive. Based in the uplands of Bali, the area is known as a center for traditional crafts and dance and is dotted with Hindu temples and shrines, surrounded by paddy fields. Also famed for its food scene, we stop off at Casa Luna restaurant for a traditional Balinese cookery class. Headed up by chef Janet De Neefe and her friendly staff, we discover the herbs, spices and techniques of Balinese cooking as well as the ceremonial and cultural significance of food. Preparing a lavish feast as a group, we create chicken curry, wok-fried eggplant, coconut and anchovy sambal, bean-coconut salad and moreish sago pudding. Suitably stuffed, we return satiated and sleepy to The Oberoi. The next day, we hop on a quick private flight to Sumba - an island largely untouched by tourism. Despite being twice the size of Bali, Sumba’s population

ROOMS AT THE OBEROI ARE LUXURY PERSONIFIED

THE OBEROI HOTEL IS A HAVEN IN SEMINYAK

barely reaches a sixth of Bali’s population. Nihiwatu - twice voted the world’s best hotel by Travel + Leisure magazine - is our destination. Once the preserve of savvy surfers, its unspoilt beaches attracted Claude and Petra Graves in 1988 as they searched for the perfect wave. They fell in love with the place and named it Nihiwatu, meaning “mortar stone”. By 2012, stories of the unregulated freedom and beauty of the resort reached American entrepreneur Christopher Burch, who came on board to expand the resort. An exotic combination of remote location and understated hedonism, it now attracts the global jet set and fashion elite.

TASSLED PARASOLS AT THE OBEROI'S OUTDOOR POOL

The OBEROI boasts some of the BEST SEA VIEWS in Bali The resort’s social and ecocredentials are top notch. Food miles are kept to a minimum: vegetables come of the resort’s own organic market garden; meat from its chicken farm; fish from the sea. Each of the 28 exquisite villas are designed to incorporate the surrounding nature, whether it’s swaying palms, colourful bougainvillea or dazzling ocean. We stay in one of Burch’s very own villas - perched upon a terrace with a spacious outdoor veranda, a private pool and a butler on speed dial. Interiors are open-plan, reflecting simple Indonesian architecture and using local materials like Alang Alang, teak and rattan. Exceptional villas aside, this hidden gem is for travellers in search of activitydriven experiences and unregulated freedom. There are countless things to do, from surfing, fishing and horse-riding

47 Chis_July17_ Indonesia.indd 47

to sunrise yoga, tours of the on-site chocolate factory and escorted trips to nearby villages. We try out the Spa Safari - a 90-minute trek through rice fields to Nihi Oka - a show-stopping area high on the cliffs. Greeted with fresh coconuts, you enjoy breakfast and lunch on a platform suspended among the trees and then head to a private section for unlimited spa treatments. Back at the resort there’s plenty more to entertain. The dreamy Boathouse bar, right on the edge of the waves, is a surfer’s paradise and offers spectacular sunsets. Ombak restaurant, overlooking the ocean, is ideal for intimate dinners as well as convivial feasts organised by the hotel like weekly BBQs and white parties. End your evening with a private outdoor cinema experience under the stars, but don’t forget to set your alarm for at least one early morning - you wouldn’t want to miss the chance to release baby turtle hatchlings into the ocean. They say Nihiwatu is on “the edge of wilderness” and with good reason. Offering authentic Indonesian experiences and surroundings in five-star luxury, it has to be one of the most beautiful and pristine resorts on this planet. ◆

I

lived in Shoreditch for 20-odd years, as well as Notting Hill, and I wasn’t considering south London before I bought this place. My friend Richard, who’s a search agent, showed it to me on The Modern House website (themodernhouse.com), and I zipped straight over on my scooter to take a look. I said yes straight away. I didn’t even come for a second viewing because I knew I was going to redo it. Space was the main consideration, but I’ve found that Bermondsey is a really interesting area. It’s also easy to get to any of my restaurants… I nip over London Bridge to get to the Oyster & Chop House. I visit at least two of my restaurants every day but I’m not really in the kitchen any more; I’ve got lots of other things to look at, mostly overseeing the creative side. This place is my home, and I also do some work from here: writing and experimenting. I might start doing some cookery demonstrations, like I do in my Kitchen Library at the Tramshed. I worked with Tekne on the refurbishment. Originally they’re shop fitters, but they’ve fallen into doing hotels

and restaurants. They did my Bankside restaurant and the one in Soho. I put them in touch with my friend Robin Hutson, who owns The Pig Hotels, so they’ve done the last two projects for him. When Robin buys old buildings for the hotels he clears them out, and he’s given me a few salvaged things for the flat – a shower and some old Crapper loos. I designed the space, and then Tekne worked as the contractors and architects. I gave them the ideas, and they put it all on paper. We gutted the whole thing, taking it right back to the bare bricks and then played around with materials: the wine racks are made out of scaffold planks picked up from building sites around here – some we paid for and others we were given for nothing. The same with the bookcase. Because they’re old, they’ve got a bit of character. The kitchen counter is made from liquid metal. You can pour it over MDF to create curves at the edges, and you don’t get joins. Underneath are pieces of cast concrete

from Retrouvius; I think they were originally columns in a mid-century office block. I wanted simple, natural oak units, something that would wear in naturally. Cooker hoods are normally so boring, so we went to a foundry and made a semi-industrial-looking unit that’s wrapped over the top of a normal extractor. We went back to the natural brick on the wall behind, which would have been the end wall of the original factory. The spoon on the wall is a Michael Craig Martin – it’s the cover of one of my books, The Collection. The ‘Vacancies’ neon piece is a Peter Saville art piece that he made. The fridge came from an antiques shop in Paris. It was made in the 1800s – originally they would have put a block of ice in the middle compartment to keep the whole thing cold. The refrigeration guy that I use for my restaurants converted it and made the top bit to match the bottom. It’s got different sections: dairy, wine, glasses, negroni cabinet. I buy a lot of stuff from junk shops and reclamation yards. The kitchen lights are from Trainspotters in Gloucestershire, and I’ve collected midcentury Stilnovo lights

over the years. I bought the cocktail cabinet years ago at the Paul Smith shop. It had a horrible Chinese painting on the front, so I got my artist friend Mat Collishaw to make a replacement. The taxidermy mice in bell jars are by Polly Morgan, and the Bridget Riley is one of the first pieces I ever bought. There’s a shop across the road – a sort of Lithuanian shop – and they were selling what I thought was a mandolin, but I couldn’t work out why it was so big; it turns out it dates from 1903 and was used for slicing white cabbage. The guitar comes from an event in Lyme Regis called Guitars on the Beach. A friend of mine said, ‘If I get a Fender guitar sponsored, can you ask Tracey Emin to draw on it?’, and she did. I thought it was going to be a silent auction, but it ended up being a raffle at a pound a ticket. So I bought a thousand tickets for £1,000 to narrow the chances down! It’s signed by Paul McCartney as well. I go back to Lyme Regis maybe three weekends a month. I’m part of the local community, I suppose. I get involved in local charity work and I do a food festival, which brings quite a few people to the area.

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE

Reproduced courtsey of THE MODERN HOUSE Visit themodernhouse.com for more home tours and interviews.

I made the garden room because the little terrace is quite small. In the summer you can open the doors up and feel like you’re inside and outside. I put the bi-fold doors in, and then got lots of crazy plants from Covent Garden. It’s a nice place to have tea in the morning. I found the old plantation chair on eBay. The artwork is by my mate Henry Hudson, who works in plasticine. That’s an Australian Moreton Bay Bug [on the ceiling]: it’s a sort of prehistoric crab. Then this is an old python skin I found rolled up in a box in a junk shop. I guess there’s a touch of the macabre, but really I just thought this room was crazy enough that you could put anything in it. I’ve got a fishing and shooting cupboard here. The wallpaper is by one of the guys who works in the gallery, Tom Maryniak;

57 Dulwich_July17_HIX.indd 57

he’s done a few different types of wallpaper in the loos at my Bankside restaurant. And then the wallpaper in the main bathroom is by Jake and Dinos Chapman. The photographs above the bed are by Susannah Horowitz – she was one of the winners of the Hix Award. Every time we do the award I end up buying something. And this one isn’t from the Hix Award: it’s just two flamingos with a little bird… I forget what its name is! The rooflight was already here; it was quite a weird space before, with a pool table and not much else. I like to blend mid-century stuff with scaffold planks and a bit of new. I used to live in a traditional four-storey house in Notting Hill: with a kid you end up running up and down stairs all the time. It is just so much easier to have everything on one floor. If you forget something in the bedroom, you don’t have to go up two flights of stairs to get it. I’ve had a couple of dinner parties here. It’s great when you’ve got friends round and you’re cooking in the same space, rather than diving off to the kitchen to slurp wine. I’ve got a house in Dorset which is one of those Scandi lodges that you can just pick up and move. I’ve had it for nine years, and got planning permission to rebuild on that space, which is directly overlooking the sea. I’m going to move the lodge to a friend’s land and rent it out, and then build a two-storey wooden house. That’ll be my next project. But I’ll probably just leave this flat as it is and start collecting more stuff. I’ve already got a lot in storage, particularly lights, which I often get from the Paul Smith shop in Mayfair. u

A Green House

No garden? Green up your indoor space with some leafy ferns. Just make sure you know a few basics first... Wo r d s S o p h i e L e e

LIVING WITH PLANTS

erns are quite easy to maintain when you know how. They can be considered to be quite needy plants, but if cared for properly, they will reward you with lush green fronds all year round. Asplenium nidus or bird’s nest fern (pictured opposite) is a great indoor plant and looks quite different to other ferns. Moisture is very important for them to thrive and grow well. The attractive, spear-like fronds should look shiny when the plant is in good health. Ferns were extremely popular during the Victorian era and large collections were grown in conservatories, in terrariums or glass cases. Their popularity waned because they were easily damaged by coal res, but when central heating came along ferns came back into favour. Most ferns are not difficult to grow, but they will not tolerate neglect; if you go on holiday for a fortnight and forget

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

Chis_July17_Living_with_Plants.indd 58

Ferns will not

TOLERATE NEGLECT; if you go on HOLIDAY for a FORTNIGHT and FORGET about them, they will NOT BE HAPPY

about them, they will not be happy. Their compost must never be allowed to dry out and the surrounding air needs to be kept moist. They love being in bathrooms – if you keep them elsewhere, mist with water regularly. Many ferns are formed of a rosette of divided arching leaves called fronds, which unfold into a beautiful performance of foliage. These fronds are delicate and need room to develop, so when putting a fern next to the rest of your plant gang make sure they have space to grow. If any fronds die off, make sure you remove them so new ones can grow. My favourite ferns are the Nephrolepis exaltata (Boston fern) and Asparagus setaceus (aspara gus fern). The Adiantum (maidenhair fern) comes in at a sly third – however, it is not as forgiving as other ferns if you forget to water it as its leaves go very crispy very quickly. Keep ferns nice and warm, at around 16–21 °C (60–70 °F). Most people think that ferns are shade lovers, but that is not true. They love indirect light; an east or north-facing windowsill is ideal. Ferns also love to be kept moist, so make sure you give them a regular misting. Water them from the bottom and never let the soil dry out – this does not mean you should keep the soil soggy, as waterlogging will lead to rotting; just keep the soil moist. Do not water them as much in winter as they do not drink as much water in the colder months. Most ferns are fast-growing and will need repotting annually, but be careful not to bury any part of the fern’s stems or leaves as this could cause the plant to rot. ◆

rustrated by the avalanche of cutesy prints adorning parental essentials after the birth of her daughter, Laura Adeshiyan decided there was room in the market for something a little bit classier. She wanted products that made her feel like herself again, and with a background in fashion retail she felt able to design something she wanted to buy. The result is Mama Rules, offering beautifully soft muslins with refreshingly modern prints. They're also marvellous multi-taskers: each piece serves as a breastfeeding cover, light blanket, pram cover, swaddle, or burp cloth, but they can also look great as scarfs or sarongs - proving you don't have to give up on style just because you have a little one in tow. ◆

Alive & kicking It’s difficult and demanding but having its moment in the sun. So why study Latin? W o r d s L u c y H o l l a n d & C h a r l o t t e H u g h e s D ’A e t h

sn’t it a dead language?” That's what pupils ask on discovering we have a Latin club at Repton. But Latin is back, enjoying a resurgence in recent years which is gratifying for those of us who endured the uncool years. All that time, learning vocab in dusty forgotten classrooms, and endlessly responding to friends’ incredulous queries as to what we were wasting our time for, means we're placed to answer the leading question….

Knowing Latin, one can appreciate JK Rowling’s debt to Latin in her spells and curses; and that, without Virgil’s Aeneid, there would surely have been no Dante’s Divine Comedy, one of the greatest works of world literature, and influential as a source of inspiration ever since. It provides a route to a huge range of other subjects such as history, literature, philosophy, theology and archaeology. Twinned with ancient Greek, the scope is further widened: a treasure trove which includes Homer and Hesiod, the Greek tragedians and a wealth of philosophical works. Latin broadens the mind and not just the tongue.

T H E L I N G U I ST I C ARGUMENT A prima facie…: (at first glance….) A knowledge of Latin helps with learning the Romance languages WITHOUT VIRGIL’S AENEID, SURELY DANTE, ABOVE, WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN (romantic not because of their ABLE TO WRITE THE DIVINE COMEDY? perception of love but for their relation to the Romans…). The most widelyspoken of these are Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Romanian. Similarities in both vocabulary and grammatical structure mean a knowledge of Latin is helpful. The joy of being able to work out a word in Spanish and unlock a sentence because of your knowledge of Latin is akin to scoring a goal. Understanding the logic of Latin grammar is invaluable for grasping the intricacies of English as well as Arabic grammar. Although neither of these is its directly mirrored in Latin, understanding the terminology and how it ‘works’, helps one to appreciate and describe how these languages function more readily. With around 60% of English words derived Latin literature, indebted to that of ancient from Latin, it increases both vocabulary, Greece, extends through the masterful prose articulacy and an appreciation of language. of the Golden Age of the Republic, beyond the Empire to the Europe of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, where Latin was the T H E C U LT U R A L C L I N C H E R lingua franca of the educated. A little less prosaic, but hardly less compelling… The study of Latin leads naturally on to With Latin one can encounter the military reading Latin literature and encountering first history of Julius Caesar, the stylistic paragon hand, and in the original language, texts which that is Cicero, the witty and ribald poetry of have influenced European and world culture. Ovid, the works of Descartes and Isaac Newton.

THE BRAIN TRAINING Audentis Fortuna iuvat (Fortune favours the brave) Reading Latin is like code breaking. Once one understands the grammatical structure, one can begin to translate and understand. As English novelist Dorothy L. Sayers argued in her 1947 essay, The Lost Tools of Learning, “The best grounding for education is the Latin grammar... not because Latin is traditional and mediaeval, but simply because even a rudimentary knowledge of Latin cuts down the labour and pains of almost any other subject by at least 50%.”

J U ST F O R T H E L OV E O F I T Ars gratia artis (art for art’s sake) Latin enthralls and fascinates. Our years spent exploring the Classical world at school enriched our lives. The members of our Latin Club at Repton are united by their curiosity and appreciation of this language, discovering it is alive in situations they had not thought of. It may be dead but Latin remains very much alive and kicking! ◆ Lucy Holland & Charlotte Hughes D’Aeth Repton School Dubai

A PERFECT GEM An education at one of Ireland’s top boarding schools for boys

G

lenstal Abbey School stands out as one of the leading boarding schools in Ireland for boys aged 12-18. Situated in County Limerick, in the heart of Munster, Glenstal Abbey is only 40 minutes drive from Shannon Airport and just over two hours from Dublin Airport. Glenstal is a small school with small classes; there are approximately 250 students divided into groups mostly of 12 to 16 pupils, in line with the clear policy and academic vision of the school. A Catholic school, Glenstal welcomes students from all traditions and sees itself as a partner with parents in the formation and nurturing of its students in a climate of learning. Each student at Glenstal is encouraged to fulfill his potential. The school’s ethos is grounded in the values of reverence,

respect and responsibility drawn from a long monastic tradition. The Irish Department of Education and Skills recently completed a whole school evaluation on the management, leadership and learning at Glenstal Abbey School. The report warmly endorsed the school’s academic, pastoral, sporting, art and music programmes: “All these aspects of the students’ experience appear to be woven into a fabric of care, support and pedagogy to nurture the academic, social and personal development of the students while in the care of the school.” Glenstal has regularly topped The Sunday Times ‘Parent Power’ survey over the last 10 years. These tables are based on the percentage of students progressing to universities. There is no better way for parents to discover what life is like for a students here than to explore the school and its grounds for themselves. u

O

n Wednesday 3 May, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan met tenants at the first homes being delivered for London Living Rent in the capital, kick-starting his new scheme to help more Londoners find a home they can afford. Sadiq visited County House in Beckenham to meet Londoners who have already begun moving into 76 homes made available for London Living Rent – a historic new way of renting a home introduced by the Mayor. It is the first of its kind and will be managed and let by the Acorn Group's PRS team. The new London Living Rent will help middle-income earners save for a deposit by offering below-market rents, based on a third of average local wages. Rents in the County House development are up to 30 per cent cheaper than local market rents and are based on one-third of median gross household income for Bromley. Sadiq Khan said, “It was fantastic to see first-hand how my new London Living Rent is really helping Londoners afford to rent a home in the capital and crucially, begin saving to get themselves on the property ladder. I welcome Hyde’s commitment to delivering these historic London Living Rent homes and investing in our new part-

nership to get on and build more new affordable homes for Londoners.” The Acorn Group are letting and managing the first London Living Rent scheme on behalf of Hyde Paul Deveney, main board director and head of PRS at The Acorn Group, said, “We were delighted to be chosen by Hyde to launch and manage this first-of-its-kind scheme, which has already proven to be a major success, with all of the units let within a seven-week period. With our extensive experience and leadership in the sector for the letting and management of medium to large scale build-torent blocks, we have been able to assist Hyde in delivering this landmark scheme, whilst helping tenants benefit from the discounts available.” Earlier this year, Acorn was named as the highest-placed managing agent in a league table for ‘build to rent’ developments in London. The Molior report placed Acorn “third overall, behind build-torent specialists Get Living London and housing association, London & Quadrant." The Acorn Group manages in excess of 5,000 properties and operates across 30 different offices in London, the southeast and Kent, and the Acorn Group incorporates Acorn, Langford Russell, John Payne, Start, Unique and MAP u.

Should you invest in London’s buy-to-let market?

I

t’s a question crossing many people’s minds as they plan for their financial future in the capital. If you were to tell friends that you’re planning to become a landlord, you would most likely be met with a wall of scepticism and furrowed brows. Over the past two years, they will tell you, landlords have felt the increasingly expensive effects of government action. Landlords buying a property now pay an extra 2% Stamp Duty, and many of the tax perks that landlords once enjoyed have been reigned back, and will disappear by 2020. On top of that, many boroughs in London have, or are considering, introducing compulsory landlord licensing. This can be both costly and a tangle of regulatory tape to navigate. For many investors, London’s buy-tolet market remains an enticing prospect despite these hurdles to entry. The number of rented homes in London exceeded the number of owner-occupied

ones recently – 898,000 rented households compared to 883,000. Overall, the number of owner-occupied households has dropped by 17% over the past decade. Demand for rental properties is increasing, unfortunately for tenants faster than inflation - at 3.2% - according to the most recent LSL Buy-to-Let Index. It also reveals that London still has the most expensive rental properties in the UK at an average of £1,286 per property. “[Recent] predictions that a flood of landlords would abandon their buy-to-let portfolios have been greatly exaggerated, in fact we have seen very few clients exit the rental market this year – most are actively looking to invest further,” says Marc von

Grunherr, Lettings Director at Benham & Reeves Residential Lettings. “Property continues to remain a very stable investment in light of stock market volatility and historically low interest rates," von Grunherr adds. “The fundamentals continue to remain strong and that is why our outlook on London property continues to be bullish. Professional investors have been able to navigate these legislation changes and capitalise on these localised rental hotspots.” Rents are also rising as demand outstrips supply. The good news for tenants is that it is not a blanket rule; demand and supply varies from postcode to postcode, so not everywhere is a hot house of increasing rents. With 16 branches across the capital, one of London's largest letting agents Benham & Reeves Residential Lettings has research that reveals the best postcodes to live in if you’re a tenant and, potentially, the best to consider if you’re a landlord looking for the areas with the strongest demand – and therefore fastest-rising rents (below). As you’ll notice from these postcodes, the most popular areas for tenants at the moment are the areas of London to the south and south west of the river which, until relatively recently, were less popular areas to rent a home. Sky-high rents in central London and more fashionable parts of North London have pushed many trend-seeking young workers into the arms of southern postcodes and, in particular, Brixton, which is currently one of the most sought-after areas to rent in London among younger renters. Best for landlords, where rents are rising fastest (+4% or more), are in south west.

London still has the most expensive rental properties in the UK at an average of £1,286 per property

Be guided through London's ever colourful and evolving market.

I

f there’s one thing about the London property market that is a constant, it’s the superlatives that most use to describe it. Extraordinary, outrageous, most expensive, smallest, fastest-rising, largest, most famous, highest-priced. I could go on. The capital has achieved them all – and that’s just over the past year. Here’s our guide to some surprising, and of course, amazing facts about the city’s property market. 1

We’re moving

Londoners move 4.6 miles on average, well under the national average of 6.6 miles and the shortest distance moved in the UK. Removals website buzzmove.com crunched the numbers from among 51,000 house moves it’s organised since 2013. Home movers in the East of England move the furthest at 12 miles, followed by Wales and the South of England. “This data shows that the myth that people don’t travel far when they move is just that – a myth,” said Damien Seaman, Head of Brand at buzzmove.com. “People move for a wide variety of reasons, but this data shows that people are clearly willing to relocate quite far away according to their circumstances.” 2

London’s a cr ow d

If you think London is too crowded then remember that the city only recently surpassed its 1939, pre-war total of 8.62 million.

All prime property in London is currently dropping in value, research by Savills has revealed this month. Its report on the market shows that prime central homes have reduced by 6.9% compared to a year ago, while prime NW London is down 3.2% and prime SW 4.4%. The area with the smallest reductions year on year is prime West London. 6

Older residents will remember when, during the decades after the war, much of central and inner central London was a ghost town in the evenings and weekends and only started to fill out again during the 1980s. 3

The top pick of Justin Marking, head of residential at Savills, for 2017 is the suburban restoration project, which he says is where you can “add value and take advantage of the differentiation between London and the country, which still exists”. R e n ts i n r eve rs e

The prime rental market in London has been sliding for a while now, particularly in the £1,000 to £1,500 a week market where rents have fallen by 7.6% year on year, according to Knight Frank. 8

The priciest property on the market at the moment is a fivebedroom apartment for sale within One Hyde Park, the Candy & Candy confection just over from Harrods. It has three reception rooms and a huge set of picturewindows offering views over Hyde Park. Got the cash? Call Knight Frank on 020 7591 8600.

who stayed in homes converted into temporary barracks during the Second World War in Hereford Square. Some of these fell victim to an air raid and were razed, and a post-war apartment block was built on the site until developer Unbranded London decided to restore the terrace to its former glory. Now, it’s unveiled three restored townhouses which are a far cry from their former incarnation. The properties range in price from £8.56m - £9.25m with more information available from Savills (0207 581 5234).

t £15.5 million, Dusty Springfield’s former home is now £1 million cheaper than when it first came on the market in 2016. The Art Deco house has seven bedrooms, five reception rooms, a garden, and a roof terrace with far-reaching views overlooking Holland Park. There’s also a swimming pool, gym, sauna and hot tub. The American couple selling the house aren’t too bothered about the reduction, one would imagine, as they bought it 10 years ago for just under £3 million. Dusty Springfield lived at the property at the height of her fame during the late 1960s and early 1970s, a period which saw her release five albums and enjoy several hits, most famously "What I Done To Deserve This" and "Son of a Preacher Man." The property is now for sale with agent John Taylor (02032 841 888).

Pedder Community Promise The Pedder partnership with Cancer Research UK brings local activities and involvement to South East London

A

t Pedder, our Community Promise is hugely important to us. We try to put something back into the local community by raising money for and contributing to local projects, schools, sports teams, art galleries and hospices. In 2016, The Pedder Group invested in excess of 10% of its annual profits into the South East London community, which we have supported and served for over 30 years. Our Community Promise work is linked to our partnership with Cancer Research UK. This long-term partnership is focused on creating a sustainable source of revenue to this worthy cause that touches so many of our lives. The money we raise is directed to local causes, ensuring the benefits of its fundraising are felt by local residents. Our lifetime partnership with Cancer Research UK raises money through activities that

all our staff are engaged with to encourage employee involvement. We hold a variety of corporate events throughout the year in aid of this cause, from 10K runs, dress down days, Wii Olympics, bake sales and pub quizzes, our efforts to support this charity are rooted in community involvement and are essential to maintaining our promise. The money raised is subsequently invested in preventative research across centres within South East London. Our most recent event was a four ball golf day on 16th June held at Sydenham and Dulwich golf club, an event that has seen successful turnout from us in the past. Over 60 people from the industry enjoyed a day of golf in the sun in aid of cancer research. The day was a huge success with everyone in high spirits and some healthy competition apparent. The players were lucky to enjoy spectacular views of the city from the club, as it is one of the highest natural points in London. The day raised around £5,500 for Cancer research. We also have a Just Giving page where we collect donations for the charity, with over £33,000 raised online, all of which is made possible with help from the community. Pedder will be arranging a number of events during the remainder of the year to add to the £38,300 we have raised in total so far for this worthwhile cause. pedderproperty.com

All in it together At Pedder we believe that community is all about people. That’s why as well as supporting the great museums and galleries in our local area, we help to promote neighbourhood events (like the Dulwich Park Fair – pictured above) that help bring people together.

Being involved with these events gives us a better understanding of our areas and hopefully better local knowledge. Pedder. Nobody knows SE London like we know SE London.
