EDITOR’S letter

J

une is my favourite month of the year. I may be a little biased (my birthday falls on the 11th) but there is always a real sense of excitement in London as summer begins. Parks become more than thoroughfares, pub gardens are no longer just for smokers and rosé sales skyrocket. To capture a little of this joie de vivre, our fashion shoot this month celebrates flowers with some of the season’s prettiest embellished designs. Turn to page 26 for the Vilshenko number that has stolen my heart (and my self-restraint). I’ve noticed that Londoners, despite how conscientious they may be abroad, always seem to forgo any form of suncare in the city. To remind us all how important it is to lather on the SPF, we have rounded up the best suncreams on page 35. In this issue we are also

7 DUL_June16_eds_Letter.indd 7

celebrating another favourite summer staple: the picnic. From Fortnums to Paul’s Bakery, page 42 is all about hampers full of goodies – well, you’ve got to have something to soak up all that Pimms and Aperol. Our usual excellent fashion, kids’ and interiors pages are interspersed with trips to Bahrain, a fabulous Father’s Day gift guide and our interview with designer Matthew Williamson who discusses his first ever interiors collaboration. I hope you enjoy the issue (and my favourite month). Ciao! ◆

he Royal Observatory in Greenwich has been at the centre of the measurement of time and space since 1675. Today, the planetarium continues to help us unravel the phenomena of the universe, but through the Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2015 exhibition, its galleries are exposing the sheer awe-inspiring beauty of heavenly bodies and the scenes they create on earth – as well as the supreme skill of the planet’s inhabitants in capturing it. The seventh year of the competition saw more than 2,700 images submitted by amateur and professional photographers from over 60 countries. “The quality of this year’s field meant there was some lively debate over the judging,” said Chris Bramley, BBC Sky At Night Magazine Editor

and competition judge. Looking at the variety of magnificent skyscapes on display, this comes as no surprise. “Each and every category contained images of a jaw-dropping standard.” The overall winner was a French photographer whose entry captures the dramatic effect of an astronomical event on the sublime, snow-clad terrain of the Sassendalen valley in Norway and the atmosphere above. “The total solar eclipse was one of the

astronomical highlights of the year and Luc Jamet has captured it perfectly. I love the way that the icy landscape of Svalbard reflects and intensifies the evocative colours of the sky – colours that only occur during the few minutes of totality,” said Royal Observatory Public Astronomer Dr Marek Kukula, another judge. The best of the exceptional photographs in each category will be on show in this stellar exhibition, which has free entry, until 26 June. Get there before it’s too late to see the International Space Station crossing the lunar surface at 30,000kph, noctilucent clouds over Sunderland, crepuscular rainbows, solar flares in close-up, the face of the moon in full blush and nebulae incubating stars.  Royal Observatory, Greenwich Blackheath Avenue, SE10 020 8858 4422; rmg.org

COSTUME DRAMA Model and designer Heidi Klum has launched her own brand of swimwear. Absolutely meets her Interview Pendle Harte

H

eidi Klum is sitting under a spotlight in the Soho Hotel surrounded by several rails full of bikinis. She is in London – briefly – to launch Heidi Klum Swim, an extension of her Heidi Klum Intimates brand, and she is radiating enthusiasm. In fact she is simply radiating – her big smile, open face and winning charm make her instantly likeable. Not for Heidi the frosty princess manner. Her entourage, however, is a different story. We have been firmly instructed not to veer the slightest bit away from the subject we are here to discuss, which is her new swimwear range. Klum may be German by birth, and broadcast weekly on German television’s huge hit Germany’s Next Top Model, but she lives and works in LA and sounds almost entirely American, apart from occasional turns of phrase. When she says swimwear, she means bikinis – and by that she really means bikini bottoms,

because she herself has little interest in wearing a top part. But swimwear, as Klum discovered, is almost as technical as lingerie, which she has been designing for some time. ‘Yes, a bra is just like a phone! There’s so much technology. Whether it’s a flexible underwire or a half underwire, there’s always a new invention. And the pads too. Did you know we make memory foam bras?’ So for the new swimwear collection, the technical details were just as important as the design. Starting with the hardwear, which Klum has strong opinions about: it mustn’t rust, or be too brash. ‘Nobody wants a huge H on their back!’ And the fabric has to be just right. ‘You need to make sure they don’t fall off or start getting weird when they’re wet. They all have to be tested.’ Klum is one of the world’s highest earning models. Despite having featured on the covers of several editions of Vogue and worked as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, she hasn’t forgotten that she started out as a catalogue model. ‘People used to say

WHEN SHE SAYS swimwear, SHE REALLY MEANS bikini BOTTOMS , BECAUSE SHE herself has little interest IN WEARING A TOP PART

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE

I’d never be anything else, so when I got my first French Vogue cover it made me feel an inch taller.’ She counts working with photographer Peter Lindbergh among her career highs, and cites ‘jobs that make me overcome my fears’ as her favourites. ‘When I shoot Germany’s Next Top Model it’s a live show in an arena full of 15,000 people and I have to talk for three hours. It’s terrifying. I’m trying to have fun but I’m scared – we have people like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga sitting on the sofa and I have to interview them and I have people shouting in my ear about commercial breaks, and millions of people watching at home. It’s nerve-wracking.’ The show is filmed in LA, as a concession to Klum’s family commitments; she has four children at school there. ‘So I go to Germany and cast the girls, then I take them to Los Angeles and film it there and I’m home at the end of the day.’

Casting young models must be a tough job. Can she tell immediately who’s in and who’s out? ‘ Yes, you can see who’s got it. But even though there are so many beautiful girls, not all of them can perform in front of a camera or step into a role. You have to be able to perform.’ It’s a well-trodden path from modeling to designing, but Klum is careful not to design just with herself in mind. ‘If I did it would probably be just bottoms, not tops! I mean I’m more of an itsy bity teeny weeny girl myself and my top comes off on the beach. I’m not a big fan of tan lines. So I try to think about the girl who wants more coverage. I know that a lot of girls like push-up – I don’t like that, but I have to think about what other girls want to wear. And I have the hardest time with one-pieces, because I never wear those myself.’ With 2,000 stockists around the world, there are also the different markets to consider. ‘When you go to the

17 NH_June16_HEIDI KLUM.indd 17

beach in Australia it’s a very different look from anywhere else. Everyone’s in long sleeves and hats with flaps down the back – and then in St Barts everyone has hardly anything on.’ On the beach, of course, Klum wears her own designs – ‘I like the tropical, fun ones because I’m often on an island, shooting something’ – and off the beach, she likes to ‘have fun with fashion’. Though as she admits, this means that ‘people sometimes hammer me for my choices. I wore a big Zac Posen gown to collect my Bambi award and I felt like Grace Kelly.’ But usually she likes to wear pieces by the Olsen twins – ‘they do a great job, they go to the fabric shows, just like how I do my stuff.’ ◆ Heidi Klum Swim is available at House of Fraser, John Lewis and online at Figleaves and ASOS as well as at select boutiques nationwide. Prices range from £43-£145

ABOUT TOWN

Everything Greenwich has to offer this summer, from culture to cuisine Wo r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s

T

here are few places in London as idyllic on a sunny summer afternoon as Greenwich. Known for the National Maritime Museum, the Cutty Sark and the Royal Observatory as well as the recently developed Greenwich Peninsula, there is plenty to keep visitors occupied. Historic maritime museums and landmarks aside, Greenwich has an impressive cultural offering including the fantastic Greenwich Theatre and the relatively new NOW Gallery, located on the Peninsula. Since opening its doors, the gallery has championed exciting artists from a multitude of different backgrounds and disciplines including burgeoning fashion designer Phoebe

English and electrifying sculptor Alex Chinneck. This summer, public art is at the forefront of their efforts to “embed public art into the fabric of the Peninsula as it develops”. The programme will consist of a series of exhibitions, innovative installations, interactive events, music performances and film screenings, most of which will be free to the public. One such exhibition will be The People’s Brick Company by Something and Sons, starting on 24 June, where visitors will be able to make their mark on London by digging up clay that will then be marked with their initials and displayed at the gallery before being fired in a kiln and built into a permanent folly on the Peninsula. After a morning of art and amateur architecture, visitors looking for sustenance can mosey on over to the

19 Gree_June16_GREENWICH FEATURE.indd 19

Greenwich Tavern, a stunning, threefloored eatery boasting beautiful surroundings and chic interior decor. The menu is a fabulous blend of pub classics and sophisticated seasonal fare with excellent vegetarian options like quinoa salad, tender-stem broccoli, butternut squash and vine ripped tomatoes in harissa oil. A stone’s throw from the Royal Park, it is the perfect place for a long, leisurely lunch as well as being a fantastic venue for special occasions such as weddings and birthdays. Those looking to celebrate their big day on a slightly grander scale need look no further than Devonport House; set in the stunning grounds of Greenwich’s World Heritage Site, they offer the perfect backdrop for a bride and groom as well as offering services to take care of every detail. Anyone who needs convincing need only stop in for a cocktail. So, for those visiting this summer, straddling the meridian, staring at the stars or boarding the Cutty Sark are not the only options for enjoying Greenwich to the fullest. 

BACK TO THE FUTURE LondonWellness Centre Wo r d s R AY S E A R L E

aving suffered from a painful back I headed down to The London Wellness Centre at London Bridge and I’m so glad I did. After an in-depth conversation with Oliver Eccles, I developed an understanding how my body works. He helped to assess why my problems arise and how I can have them treated and to avoid future discomfort. Often areas distant from the pain site can cause imbalance, dysfunction or injury. I had all my joints and muscles tested for restriction or over-tightness, as well as for strength, range of motion and speed of muscle engagement. This gave information as to which areas in my body bear the brunt of all my stress and which areas are not pulling their weight (so to speak). All of that is to determine if actual damage is still going on (usually the case if there is pain) or whether an old injury is still resulting in a poor motor pattern. Chiropractic treatment consists of adjusting muscle and joints, either in your spine or in an extremity (arms/legs), muscle release, sometimes dry needling/acupuncture or simply pelvic. After having my posture assessed and doing some manipulation excerises, I left feeling much more mobile and my general wellbeing has improved tenfold. I look forward to a return visit. u ● THE LONDON WELLNESS CENTRE 020 7531 4444 info@thisislondonwellness.com thisislondonwellness.com

Summer Nights Our resident perfume expert presents exotic scents to give your home a faraway feeling W o r d s L aw r e n c e R o u l l i e r W h i t e

A

s we move into summer we start to think of sultry nights, of far-flung destinations where scent hangs heavy in the still air or a warm breeze blows across a balcony, bringing with it the notes of exotic night blooming flowers. These potent perfumes elude those living in London, however, there are ways we can bring the authentic, alluring aromas of summer into our urban lives. Fornasetti's La Notte Di Capri [1] candle is natural vegetable wax hand-poured into a ceramic vessel featuring the island's softly moonlit buildings. Top notes of lemon, bergamot, mandarin, galbanum blend beautifully around a heart of pine sap and samphire, that sits on a base of elegant cistus labdanum, iodine and ambergris. You can almost hear the waves breaking on the rocks below. Frédéric Malle’s Perfume Guns [2] were originally designed to diffuse his own scents in luxury hotels. Frédéric Malle loved them so much that he started using them in his home. They are an efficient way to maintain a scented environment, the fragrance collecting in carpets and curtains. Created by Dominique Ropion and using Headspace analysis, a very modern technology that captures and reproduces the molecular scents of nature, Un Gardenia la Nuit reproduces perfectly the almost carnal smell of the eponymous 4 flower. Lose yourself in the milky, spicy, fruity flower but also fresh and green smell that gardenias exude on a summer night. The Tropical Gardenia [3] candle by gorgeous Australian brand Cocolux, combines intoxicating gardenia in super-

JASMINE is a scent that is INDELIBLY LINKED with PASSION ecological coconut wax in an immaculately presented copper vessel. Jasmine is a scent that is indelibly linked with passion, a sweet narcotic flower that’s fragrance intensifies at night to attracts the moths that pollinate to its moonlightreflecting white flowers. For many years, due to the rarity of its ingredients, Joy by Jean Patou [4] enjoyed the reputation of being the world’s most expensive perfume. In this iconic scent that was first released in 1929, Rose de Mai and Jasmine from Grasse mix with Ylang-Ylang and Tuberose, anchored by a light sandalwood base. Rose

37 DUL_June16_Perfume.indd 37

Centifolia and Jasmine de Grasse are nurtured in the house’s own fields and flowers are plucked by hand at dawn during the months of May and September when the blooms are at their finest. With Alter by Sammarco [5], the perfumer Giovanni Sammarco accentuates the sensual nature of jasmine by pairing it with rose and incense in order to fully reveal the seductive quality of jasmine sambac. Native to Italy, Giovanni Sammarco is a perfume maker who resides in Switzerland due to his love for the country and his love for perfume making. All of his perfumes are 100% hand-made and all raw materials and ingredients used are carefully chosen by Sammarco himself. The tuberose is a tropical night blooming plant that is renowned for its heady, almost aphrodisiacal, scent. Hiram Green is a master of natural perfume making, his collection is perfectly conceived and masterfully executed. Moon Bloom [6] is the scent of seduction; the rich, creamy aroma of tuberose absolute. This scent is also perfectly captured in the beautiful Mademoiselle de La Vallière candle by Cire Trudon, a most for the side table as a precursor to a night of passion. Just as appropriate for such an occasion, is the brand new lingerie perfume from Lebanese perfumers; IDEO Parfumeurs. TubereuseMexique is a triumphant rendering of a sensual scent that can be secretly and intimately worn and discovered. 5

ABSOLUTELY / PROMOTION up to 12 months so your skin will keep on improving with results lasting up to five years. Is the procedure painful? Most of our patients just feel a tingling sensation, with no real pain. Who is the ideal candidate for NovaLift? The procedure is suitable for both men and women who have started to see a change in the elasticity and firmness of their skin, but want a non-surgical approach to rejuvenation with natural-looking results. In clinical trials 90% of patients saw visible lifting as a result of the ultrasound. Is the NovaLift a replacement for a surgical facelift? Although the results will not be as dramatic as with a surgical facelift, it’s pain-free, gives immediate results so patients leave looking radiant and rejuvenated, and because there’s no downtime no-one will know you’ve had anything done. Plus the effects get better and better with time – it’s like turning back the clock on ageing!

SAVING FACE

The ultimate technology in non-surgical facelifts exclusively at Nova MediSpa, Greenwich

N

ovaLift is the revolutionary no surgery facelift that gives instant results. It’s a totally non-invasive alternative to surgical treatment and uses the latest state-of-theart technology to achieve incredible results – instantly. We visited Nova MediSpa to meet the well known Dr. Karen Orempuller leading practitioner.

Can you really get a facelift with no surgery? Yes, the NovaLift really does work and the results are amazing and virtually immediate, with no downtime following the treatment. You can pop into our clinic, then go straight back to work, or lunch or shopping! So, what is NovaLift? NovaLift uses the latest technology in High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) to lift,

firm and tone. The procedure has been tried, tested and constantly evolved and improved to the state-of-the-art system we have at the Nova Clinic. It has thousands of successful clinical treatments to prove both its safety and its effectiveness. How does the HIFU work? During the procedure focused, high intensity ultrasound energy stimulates the deep structural support layers of the skin, including those typically addressed in a surgical facelift. Crucially, however, the surface of the skin is not disturbed at all. The ultrasound energy stimulates the growth of new collagen, to gradually strengthen, lift and tone skin from within. Results are usually immediate and the skin may appear tighter and firmer right away. But the great part is that once stimulated the treated areas will continue to produce fresh collagen for anything

In a saucepan, heat the milk and the stock together. In another saucepan, melt the butter over a medium heat, add the flour and cook for 2–3 minutes. Serves 4 fter testing various marinades for lamb and mutton, Adi, one A of our managers, described what we came up with as “Hara bhara,” which translates as “fresh and green” in Hindi. I love that description, so we called it that on the menu. It’s a very herby marinade with a subtle spice that works really well with the smoky aubergine and is nicely cut by the yoghurt.

Preparation time: 1 day Cooking time: 1½ hours I n g r e d i e nt s • 8 lamb cutlets • 3 aubergine • 4 cloves of Confit Garlic • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds, toasted • 1 sprig of fresh thyme • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

n stepping inside our luxury villa it is impossible not to let a sense of serenity and peace wash over me. As it turns out, this is exactly what The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain is all about. Located a mere 11 km from the airport, the hotel consists of a 245-room resort located on 20 acres of private beachfront encircling a beautiful lagoon of deepest blue. Of the nearly 250 rooms on offer, 31 are suites and 42 are Club Level rooms but the real jewels in The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain’s crown are the 23 stunning seafront villas. These each boast three bedrooms, a private pool, beach access and a 24-hour butler service ready to cater to your every whim. The interiors are inspired by ‘60s architecture, with vibrant colours, wood panelling and exposed beams. There is also a generous dollop of South American and Mediterranean influence which melds together to create a uniquely engaging environment. Although inspired by ‘60s cool, there is nothing old fashioned about the facilities; the entire villa is kitted out

with state-of-the art amenities designed to make a guest’s stay as relaxing as possible. Their only drawback? You may never want to leave. After wandering around for a good fifteen minutes, fiddling with airconditioning settings and leaping onto one of the softest beds I have ever encountered, I finally turn my attention to the view. From some parts of the resort, guests can see the Arabian Gulf; from our villa we are treated to a fabulous, unrestricted view of picturesque Manama Bay. The most striking characteristic of the villas, however is their tranquillity. Nestled amidst the lush greenery of the gardens, they feel secluded without being isolated and offer the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of modern life. I am also struck by the blend of sophisticated elegance and laid-back, beachy vibes in the design. Access to the water is also key. The Kingdom of Bahrain boasts beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures attracting holidaymakers year-round. So, being able to dip into the crystal

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST Relax in the fantastic spa at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain

The stylish interior of a beachfront villa

THE SPA IS A HAVEN

offering treatments

TO LEAVE GUESTS

restored and relaxed Spend your time in the lap of luxury

waters of the lagoon at any time is a luxury that cannot be overstated and one that is valued highly by visitors to The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. When I am finally able to tear myself away from the villa, I start to explore the resort. Aside from the lovely decor and the many restaurants (which I will expand on later), I am drawn to The Ritz-Carlton Spa. A reason to stay all on its own, the spa is a haven offering relaxing treatments and signature products to leave guests refreshed and restored. I am particularly impressed by the thalassotherapy pool, a large, warm, mineral-rich pool with hydrotherapy jets to ease away aches and pains, allowing visitors to emerge revitalised and oh-sorelaxed. There is also the usual spa offering of massages and beauty treatments but all with that specific Ritz-Carlton finish that seems to add a sheen of luxury and of going the extra mile. For anyone wishing to exert a little energy, there is a fully stocked gym and also beachfront tennis courts and an air-conditioned indoor squash court. I am even able to indulge in a little retail therapy in the shopping arcade as I wander.

Having worked up an appetite, I have a serious decision to make; The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain has a veritable smorgasbord of restaurants and bars on offer and all sound irresistible. La Med lays on a fabulously lavish buffet, while The Gourmet Lounge specialises in Old World classics with decor inspired by La Belle Epoque - a truly regal dining experience. If you’re looking for something a little more exotic then Nirvana is for you; Executive Chef Mahipal Singh creates tantalising dishes complemented by the rich, sultry decor all set to the live music of the ‘Santoor’. Primavera serves up excellent Italian while Plums is the place

to go for a really good steak. Lighter bites are available from La Plage, the resort’s poolside restaurant (perfect for a lazy lunch with plenty of wine) and from Thai Lounge. A quintessential afternoon tea can be had at The Lobby Lounge but my personal favourite is the Burlington Club where guests can stop for a cocktail and a fine Cuban cigar before or after dinner. Another aspect of the hotel that makes it a destination for travellers is the Club Level. This is designed to create the feeling of a ‘hotel within a hotel’, to extend an extra level of exclusivity, comfort and personalized service. It is located on two dedicated floors to ensure privacy and offers a separate lounge area with complimentary food and drink throughout the day. It is a wrench to leave at the end of my stay as weeks could be spent here without ever needing (or wanting) to venture out of the resort. The amenable staff, glorious design and excellent facilities without a doubt put The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain among the leading luxury hotels in the world. 

A

t the Chapel has one of those stories. Founders Catherine and Ahmed stumbled upon the building by chance during a trip to the tiny Somerset village of Bruton. They were looking for a new home in the country; what they found was a derelict Methodist chapel in need of a great deal of TLC. They transformed the crumbling nook into a marvellous modern residence. Years later, they decided to turn their visionary home into a hotel – so now the building boasts an on-site bakery and restaurant as well as eight exceptionally lovely rooms. 

THE FOOD

A

THE AREA

t the Chapel is locally (and indeed nationally) renowned for the quality of its fare. The coffee and treats available in the bakery put most of London’s hipster bread-slingers to shame, while the restaurant serves top-notch grub of a creative yet unpretentious bent: think wood-fired pizza and locally sourced specialties prepared with a dash of Mediterranean flair. Oh, and it’s situated within the chapel itself, with huge windows, lush views and contemporary art to ogle. 

A

h, Bruton! What a wonderful surprise this little village is to the first-time visitor: cute enough to decorate a tourist’s teapot and surrounded by rolling fields, yet still amply blessed with cosmopolitan delights. Not least the world-class Hauser & Wirth gallery of contemporary art, a brisk tramp across the fields, and trend-leading design boutique Caro (carosomerset.com), five minutes from the hotel. 

HOT SEATS Primrose Hill local Matthew Williamson’s flamboyant fashion translates to interiors in a new collaboration with Duresta Interview Pendle Harte

PENDLE HARTE: You have worked with interiors before, collaborating with The Rug Company and Osborne and Little, but this is your first foray into furniture. Where did you look for inspiration? MATTHEW WILIAMSON: The collection came to life mostly by looking at pieces of my own, bought mostly from antique markets or dealers over the years and which I’ve adapted or updated myself. I also collect pictures and samples of anything that catches my eye, so it was a fun process to build a collection which came from my personal favourite pieces.

fashion and interiors industries that I see a real crossover in my work. I imagine that a woman who buys one of my dresses also wants a fabulous sofa or wallpaper and it’s this 360 degree lifestyle approach that I love most. PH: How would you describe your own home? What are your favourite things and where do they come from? MW: I’m lucky with my home as it has good bones. It’s a Victorian townhouse and the rooms are large with high ceilings and great original details so really my job was just to dress it and make it personal to me. I love the lounge most of all. It’s a large lozenge shape with an old wooden barrel door, original parquet floors and big bay windows overlooking the garden. This room is quite neutral but the furniture and items I’ve collected over the years add colour and character and tell a personal story. It’s changing all the time. I love moving things around

I’M NOT about glitz. MY MOST

treasured items ARE inexpensive, SENTIMENTAL PIECES

PH: Your style has always involved colour and print. How do fashion colours and prints translate into furniture? MW: My passion is for colour, patterns, textiles, travel, culture and exotic elements. I love bringing my DNA to whatever product I’m working on. While fashion has been my main career focus, there is such a huge overlap between the

HOMES & INTERIORS / PROFILE I prefer

to MAKE SOMETHING poor look RICH regularly to keep it fresh. It’s easier than you sometimes think to make your space evolve, and adding a few small touches here and there can help to update your look. Flowers, candles, cushions, book piles and pictures are easy ways to add areas of interest. A bit like my clothes, I prefer to make something poor look rich. I think that comes from my work ethic and from my parents. I’m not about glitz. My most treasured items are inexpensive, sentimental pieces: a necklace with charms picked up on my travels and a bowl of rocks collected from the beach. PH: How did the collaboration with Duresta come about? MW: Duresta is a brilliant brand based in the UK, making all its furniture by hand. I’m drawn to brands which value craftsmanship and quality and they certainly do that. Making my first line of furniture with them has been a passion project which I’ve loved. It’s been a real journey to see these pieces come to life over the past year and I’m thrilled with the results as they really reflect my brand’s DNA. Now, the difficult thing for me is to edit which pieces I want to have in my own home.

PH: What did you learn from it? MW: I learnt so much. It’s always fascinating to step out of your comfort zone and pick up new skills and work on different projects. I totally underestimated the time, patience and craftsmanship of each and every piece until I visited the Duresta factory in Long Eaton and saw for myself what a labour of love the entire process is. PH: Who are your favourite designers, both fashion and interiors? MW: My favourite designers are Ossie Clarke, Zandra Rhodes, Christian Lacroix and Dries Van Noten. PH: What will your next fashion collection look like? MW: The next fashion collection will drop on my website in May. It’s a fresh collection of separates for the ‘see now, buy now, wear now’ consumer. We have built a new fashion and lifestyle platform with products available on our site. PH: Are any other interior projects or collaborations in the pipeline? MW: I’ve just launched a collection of stationery and am soon to launch sportswear in May, followed by a designer colouring book by the end of the year and I then have my eye on childrenswear and china.  Matthew Williamson for Duresta is available at Harrods

avid Tazzyman’s vision of ‘Truth’ is a curious grey creature resembling a Barbara Hepworth sculpture that accompanies Arthur and suffers all sorts of indignities as a result of the lad’s attempts to avoid responsibility for his actions. The tale, by award-winning Tim Hopgood, is a simple one with Arthur finally realising the benefits of telling the truth, but along the way there are encounters with princesses, aliens and giant robots while poor ‘Truth’ is stretched, pulled, disguised and covered up. The book is a hoot – honestly! 

t’s exam period. A testing time for pupils and parents alike. But the one thing our children don’t need is any more pressure from us. Britain’s top private schools have reported an alarming rise in exam stress among pupils over the past five years — much of it caused by pressure from anxious parents. According to a survey by the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC), which represents the country’s most famous schools including Eton, Harrow and Westminster, 56% of heads polled said that pressure from home to get high grades was the biggest cause of exam-related stress. Nearly all head teachers (97%) said they were now asking parents into advice sessions and offering parenting classes on how to deal with the issue amid concerns that youngsters are buckling under the pressure. “Today’s teenagers are increasingly overwhelmed by the pressures they feel to succeed in life. There is no doubt that we — parents, teachers, friends — must come to their assistance,” Chris King, headmaster of Leicester Grammar School Trust and chairman of the HMC. “Parents — and I am one of them — need to keep a sense of perspective and try not to transmit our anxieties onto our children. The survey reveals that more than three quarters of schools are calling in therapists and all are offering counselling within school. Three-quarters offer mindfulness sessions and nearly half have laid on yoga classes. At Queen Anne’s, an independent girls’ boarding school in Caversham, Berkshire, pupils have been attending de-stressing workshops for the past year– and their grades in their mock

More than three QUARTERS of schools are CALLING IN THERAPISTS

GCSEs have gone up by up to two grades as a result. Pupils have been taught techniques such as deep breathing to calm themselves as well as learning how proper revision and planning can reduce the risk of panic during an exam. “Parents often inadvertently make their children more stressed,” says headmistress Julia Harrington. “They need a certain amount of stress to do well, but too much turns into anxiety, which floods the brain and makes them feel hopeless.” So what can parents do to help? Don’t take over. The most common complaint from teenagers, says Eileen Tracy, author of The Student’s Guide to Exam Success, is that parents – mainly mothers – are too involved and this makes them anxious and fearful of disappointing them. Be a non-intrusive, supportive

presence. Offer tea, toast and sympathy. Don’t nag them. Even seemingly anodyne comments can be corrosive. “Every time a stressed-out mother says, ‘Shouldn’t you be revising?’ the student gets a shot of adrenaline, which doesn’t make them want to work,” says Tracy. Avoid barbed comments. (“What, on instagram again?”), says Janey Downshire, from Teenagers Translated. Pass the responsibility back to them. “I tell my children that I don’t want them to regret not working hard enough. Ask what they would like from you. Be specific when you offer help. “Tell me three things I can do for you,” says Dr Carina Eriksen, a consultant psychologist who works in schools. “That way you are promoting a collaborative approach.” Don’t banish them to their bedroom for hours. Let them come home from school, let off steam and eat something nutritious. “Never believe a teenager until they’ve recharged their blood sugar levels,” advises Bernard Trafford, headmaster of the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle. He encourages his pupils to work for no more than an hour at a time. After this, “they need to move, stretch their legs, have a drink”. Following a few hours revising, they need fresh air: “Healthy mind in healthy body” is more important than ever at this time. Don’t ban them from the computer, says Harrington. “They might not be working but the chances are they are. The exam system has changed a lot — there is much more analysis and deep thinking now rather than rote learning of facts.” Don’t tell them their future depends on this exam. “It’s a parent’s job to give the wider picture: life doesn’t hang on any exam,” says Tracy. 

PROPERTY / DEVELOPMENTS NIGEL LEWIS

NEW HOMES R EG E N E RAT I O N

RADICAL MAKEOVERS?

he capital’s race to build more T homes is having an unexpected result for some of its less predictable neighbourhoods, says Nigel Lewis. High prices and fewer homes for sale in the most desirable parts of London mean areas that have been less fashionable for years, are getting makeovers and – more importantly for London’s accommodationstarved residents – new homes. Areas that buyers might have previously struck off their wish lists are now go-to areas. And the developers’ cranes are following suit, crowding once sleepy skylines with their one-legged swingers. Here we look at some of the areas being upgraded with both regeneration cash as well as new, gleaming apartments developments.

SOUTH: ELEPHANT & CASTLE

here were some tentative signs of regeneration in and around Elephant and Castle during the mid-noughties when an expensive improvement programme was announced and several high-profile new homes developments were built. But after these were completed, the recession put a stop to any new money coming in. It’s all now picking up again with £3 billion earmarked for the area. As well as a more pedestrianfriendly road layout, there are several new developments under construction including Elephant Park, a former council estate. It is to include a new shopping precinct, gardens, and 2,500 sustainable homes. Developer Lendlease has just launched its latest phase called Highwood Gardens, which comprises 307 homes surrounded by attractive courtyard gardens designed by leading landscape architects, Gillespies. The new apartments at Highwood Gardens are available from £540,000. For more information, call 020 3675 9955 or visit www.elephantpark.co.uk. u

T

CENTRAL: SOHO SQUARE

ou might assume Soho and regeneration wouldn’t go together given its West End location, but only recently has the area’s sleazier reputation begun to wear off – much to the horror of fans such as Steven Fry and Marc Almond, who want to stop what they call its sanitisation. The arguments over Soho centre around its retail makeover and the loss of the small, independent shops that make it so unique and, consequently, apartment developers are treading carefully. Rather than shiny new blocks, older properties are being upgraded. The most recent example is the Duke of Portland’s former townhouse on Soho Square. Built during the late 17th century, this Grade II listed property is now called 10 Soho Square, a development by Oakmayne Bespoke where just one apartment is left to purchase for £4.75 million. Call Oakmayne Bespoke on 020 7407 3667 or visit www.10sohosquare.com. u

y

EAST: HACKNEY WICK

f you visited the Olympic site during the 2012 games, then it wasn’t all shiny new buildings. In the distance away from the razzmatazz you could still see some neglected quarters of Stratford, including adjacent Hackney Wick. Until the Olympic billions arrived this was an area best known for its ugly industrial units, but now the green light has been given for a major overhaul of it and, more specifically, Fish Island. Three schemes have just been given planning permission. Anne Currell of estate agent Currell, which has longstanding roots in east London, says: “There is the land capacity to support around 3,000 new homes plus vast commercial and amenity space including artists’ studios. u

HARVEY & WHEELER A brief history of 160 years in property GARETH MARTIN Owner, Harvey & Wheeler

T

he firm was founded in 1855 and bought by Mr Harvey & Mr Wheeler in 1919 from George Fitzroy-Francis. We are lucky enough to have a photograph of George, which is dated 1919. Harvey & Wheeler were both surveyors and met during the war. Mr Harvey was in the 13th London Regiment and Mr Wheeler was in the Artists Rifles. Mr Harvey qualified as a surveyor in 1912 with Mr Wheeler qualifying in 1924. Their first large sale was Morley’s Hotel in Trafalgar Square (see image 2). This is a water colour painting of the hotel. It is thought to have been painted by Will Longstaff. The story we have been told was that he was renting the flat above our office at 17 Lower Belgrave Street, which could well have been his London studio. He couldn’t afford the rent one month so Mr Wheeler asked him to paint Morley’s Hotel, which they had just sold, instead. Other notable pre-war sales include Inveresk House in the Strand sold to Prudential Assurance in 1935 for £750,000 and a property in Market Street Manchester sold to Montague Burtons in 1936. The 1920s and 1930s had been a good time for Harvey & Wheeler despite the economic problems of the period. We dealt mainly with commercial property in London and around the country. Sadly we don’t have a picture of Mr Harvey but we do have one of Mr Wheeler which I’m guessing was taken between the wars (see image 1). Interestingly Mr Harvey and Mr Wheeler would never employ women. This is of course quite unthinkable today, but the

The 1920s and 1930s had been a good time for Harvey & Wheeler despite the economic problems practical consequences were that nothing was typed and pretty much everything including letters were written out in longhand. The firm rolled down the shutters sometime after war was declared in 1939. On the 18th September 1939 Lt. Wheeler joined the Royal Army Pay Corps as a paymaster stationed in Sidcup. By the end of the war he had become Major Wheeler

and this was where he met my father. Major Wheeler was my father, Sgt. Ivor Martin’s, commanding officer. When my father left the army he went straight to work at Harvey & Wheeler’s office at the invitation of Mr Wheeler. My father was sent by Wheeler to meet with Harvey, who took him to a 'bombed out basement' at 17 Lower Belgrave Street - he dug out the pre-war files and started bashing out letters to old clients on a typewriter. This was a letter informing them that: "Following the cessation of hostilities we are recommencing operations and should be pleased to hear from you with a list of your current property requirements." Once he had a number of enquiries for the same town, he would go to that town, draw up a street plan and then worked out which were the family owned shops. He would then go to the rates office and get the names and addresses of the ratepayer. The following day he would type out letters to all of those he thought might be willing to sell their premises. After the war Mr Wheeler continued to work but the day to day running of the office was carried out by my father. Mr Harvey retired to Broadstairs after the war due to ill health. He died on Christmas Day in 1961 aged 77. On a typical day Mr Wheeler would leave Sidcup after nine to avoid the crowds, arrive at the office which was at 17 Lower Belgrave Street, open the post, discuss business with my father and leave early to again, avoid the crowds. Mr Wheeler was diagnosed with cancer and died on the 3rd May 1952 aged 61. Following the death of Mr Wheeler, Mrs Wheeler and my father created a new partnership in order to keep

96 31/05/2016 17:07

PROPERTY / HISTORY the firm trading. Mrs Wheeler had little to do with the trading side but clearly her involvement kept the business running during the difficult 1950s. The sixties and the early seventies saw the business expanding and moving premises during the 1960s, to new offices at 65 Ebury Street in Belgravia and just around the corner from Lower Belgrave Street. One of the partners at that time was Godfrey Young who was an auctioneer. And one of our most famous sales was Bertram Mills Circus. From its Belgravia base, the practice continued to evolve providing a consultancy service throughout the UK to a wide variety of clients not only in the retail sector but also industrial, offices and leisure. We were dealing with a diverse range of properties from factories to cinemas on behalf of clients such as Honeywell, Crane Fruehauf and Mecca Entertainment. Harvey & Wheeler were the agents for Honeywell, Army & Navy stores, Crane Fruehauf, American Hoist and its subsidiaries, acquiring properties from Dundee to Accrington and South Wales. Ivor Martin had a strong interest in the arts and we also acted for Contemporary Films, the oldest independent film distribution company in the UK. We also worked with Mecca, acquiring bingo halls, bowling alleys and even a casino in Derby. Another project was selling Sir Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson’s house in Belgravia. In 1977 we moved again, due to redevelopment of the Ebury Street offices by the Grosvenor Estate. We moved to number 82 and number 83 Chester Square. The partnership now included Bob Carini who had been working for Harvey &

Wheeler for some years. Ivor was asked to deal with the sale of a Georgian house in Gibsons Hill SW16, and although we had been dealing with a small amount of residential property in Belgravia, this was our first house sale south of the river. The house was sold very successfully and a friend of the owner phoned my father up and asked if he could sell his Georgian house in Dulwich Village. This was what really led to our specialisation in, and eventual move to Dulwich. We sold a lot of the Georgian houses in the area during these years and quite a few in Camberwell Grove too. In 1979 I sold Mark Knopfler his first house which

97 Dul_June16_HARVEY&WHEELER.indd 97

This was what really led to our specialisation in, and eventual move to Dulwich

was in Camberwell Grove. The first Dulwich office was at 133 Half Moon Lane which we moved to in 1983 just after my father had retired. There was a new partnership with Bob Carini and my brother Malcolm Martin, both Chartered Surveyors, and myself. The early 1980s were an exciting time in the UK property market and we sold a huge number of houses and flats in Dulwich, Herne Hill and much of the surrounding area, with the emphasis on period and unusual properties. We opened another office in West Dulwich at Croxted Road and finally consolidated the business and moved into Dulwich Village. By this time Malcolm had left the partnership to concentrate on another project and the partnership consisted of just Bob and myself with a slimmed down staff including Cathy Burns who is still with me today. Bob retired in 2008 and I have carried on as sole principal. If you are reading this and know anything about any of the people mentioned or have photographs of anyone, particularly Mr Harvey, I would be very pleased to hear from you. ď ľ

hen I was growing up I was always interested in architecture. I was fascinated by the different styles of property in the world, especially those of the Georgian era, which is a favourite of mine. I used to think of how amazing it would be to go walking around all those grand houses and flats. I started out in lettings and I absolutely loved it. It was a fantastic, fast paced section of the estate agency world and a real eye opener to how quick you have to be on your feet to win business from not only other agents but from your colleagues too. I spent most of my time working for an agency in Blackheath and it was there where I really learnt my trade as a negotiator. It was a challenging time, as there were around 12 local agents in the village so you couldn’t afford to sit and wait for the business, you had to go and win it. Throughout my time in Blackheath, I progressed up through the ranks, moving from lettings to sales and ultimately ending up as an Assistant Sales Manager before I made the really

We're really excited by what the future holds for the area hard decision to go searching for a Branch Manager role. It was a daunting experience as it was going to be at a whole new challenge, probably in a new location which I would need to get to know very well. A move like that never comes without its doubts and concerns, but I firmly believed in my ability and determination to succeed and knew deep down that I could step up to the required level. So when the opportunity came up to manage an office in Peckham for an independent company, it didn’t take me long to make the decision to go for it. I have been with Gareth James Property for around a year now and it has been an incredible experience. My office is based on Bellenden Road in Peckham Rye and it is an area that really has it all; a great local community

that supports the local businesses, fantastic restaurants, lovely parks, brilliant transport links and excellent schools. We have a great involvement with Dog Kennel Hill School at the moment and only last week we sponsored their first ever fun run which was an amazing success, I even managed to get my regional manager to run in it just to show them our full support! We have their summer fair in a few weeks and we are really looking forward to helping them acquire the relevant funding for their new all-weather pitch for their children to use. I personally see Peckham continuing to grow as the large movement within the area is home owners moving for a change of space instead of location. It just seems to have such an appeal that the locals are rarely looking to leave. It is in sheer demand right now and the increase in property prices are further evidence of that. Also, Peckham Rye station is undergoing a massive enhancement within the near future and it’s clear that this demand will not slow down any time soon. We’re really excited by what the future holds for the area and I for one am really looking forward to being a part of it. ◆

VILLAGE LIFE Do you dream of village living?

N

ew research shows the village is back in fashion as more of us turn our backs on the grit of urban survival. Mention villages to most Londoners and they may assume you’re talking about one of the capital’s urban ersatz. But according to research from Strutt & Parker, a fifth of the home movers want to live in a real village, away from the City. Escaping city life and embracing the country is a trend created by both high house prices in urban areas as well as the opportunities presented by home working, not to mention a desire to don wellies and waxed jackets. Other reasons, the research highlights, include lower living costs, a healthier lifestyle, more privacy and being closer to family and friends. To identify the modern ‘good lifers’ Strutt & Parker categorised those moving to villages into different types. These include ‘the Downtons’ who are wealthy families who escape the city for a prime village house, and ‘Rusticarians’, these are young entrepreneurs who home work from a broadband bungalow or cyber cottage. And finally we have the ‘rural newbies’; families looking for somewhere to raise their children. Those with a bucolic bent also want, outstanding countryside views (or sea views), walking trails, sporting facilities, cycling or biking trails and equestrian

facilities, the research shows. They’re clearly a hard bunch to please. For Strutt & Parker it is simple – a community of between 3,000 and 10,000 houses. But for the vast majority of London families shipping out, close proximity to a train station is going to be essential. Here are three villages that come close pastoral perfection.

GREAT SHELFORD

This is a popular village with those wanting the country lifestyle in Cambridgeshire but who also need to commute back to the City. It’s an hour and 20 minutes from Liverpool Street to Shelford station, which makes it just about commutable. The village’s treats include pubs, restaurants, banks, cycle shops, a deli, bakery and garden centre. What can you buy there? Try this five bedroom, high-spec house with a double garage and garden. It’s for sale with Strutt & Parker at £1,495, 01223 459502.

THRUXTON

Thruxton is an ancient village close to the A303 on which you’ll drive to Andover train station. From there trains can be caught to London Waterloo which takes an hour

The Old Forge, Thruxton £575,000

and 20 minutes. The village has a green, two pubs, a church, community hall and a school. A garden centre is scheduled to open soon, and there’s a petrol station cum farm shop in Weyhill, the next village along. What can you buy there? A four bedroom cottage with a huge garden in the centre of Thruxton, opposite the village green. On the market for £575,000, 01722 344058.

SUTTON COURTENAY

This ravishingly beautiful village sits on the Thames between Oxford and Didcot and is renowned as the home of Herbert Asquith, the prime minister who took Britain in WW1. It has a school, village hall, cricket and football pitch and three pubs. London is 45 minutes away via Didcot, which is a short drive from the village. What can you buy there? This plot of land, which is on the market for £325,000 and has planning permission and a building contract for a five bedroom modernist home almost on the water’s edge of the Thames, which bimbles past the 1.4-acre plot. I

t’s been a hectic year at the Dulwich Wood Federation, kicked off by the peerless news anchor – and Dulwich resident – Huw Edwards opening our fabulous new Reception and Year One building back in autumn last year. We imagine the students’ enthusiasm and excitement at the opening ceremony brought back memories for Huw Ω memories of presenting Kate and Will’s wedding for the BBC (and yes we had sandwiches and tea). We are tremendously grateful for his time and effort. The children were then invited to the BBC for a visit which he hosted. Fundraising has played an

important part in school life this year. Regular Fruity Fridays top up the funds raised by the Friends of Dulwich Wood as do the car boot sales – come along to the next one at the Alleyn’s Head and bag an unrecognized Rembrandt! The support from the Alleyn’s Head has been fantastic and we look forward to the next hotly-contested pub quiz held there on the 25th May – the multilingual music rounds are the stuff of legend. The pupils themselves have been fundraising for Farm Africa, Street Child and their ‘Kick Ebola Out’ campaign, an extraordinary bit of charity work initiated by a Year 6 pupil with family in Sierre Leone. This project was then backed by the whole school with input from the University of

We’re banking on sunshine for our Summer Fair (sponsored by fabulous local estate agents Pedder) on the 2nd July, not just because summer is tantalizingly close, but because we want to see the sun shine on our brand new solar power station – thank you Friends of the Earth and all those donors who made it possible! We haven’t even mentioned the Dulwich Wood chickens, our amazing International Day, the Christmas Fair or ‘Aardvark asks the questions’... u Curious about the only school in London with a lighthouse, an aardvark and an emu? Check us out on Facebook: www.facebook.com/ FriendsofDulwichWood, follow us on twitter: @friendsofdwp, or find out more about the Primary School, our Nursery School and our children’s centres at www.dulwichwood.com - we look forward to welcoming you soon.
