ABSOLUTELY’S December issue highlights
Ican't remember exactly the first time I entered Chichester Cathedral, but I do know I was absolutely stunned by what I saw. Being someone who doesn't come from a particularly religious family, I wasn't that familiar with the inner workings of the church, but on a guided tour of Chichester's wonderful cathedral I was hooked. It's why details of its 950th anniversary celebrations caught my eye when it popped into my inbox. Next year promises to be special for all manner of reasons and this month we took an early sneak peek at what you can expect.
So we have the church, plus plenty more to have your Christmas well and truly wrapped up. There's an interview with Sussex author Karen Swan about her latest festive release, and it's one worth curling up on the sofa for. Talking sofas, we have a festive Home special, which will offer plenty of yuletide inspiration to ensure your abode gets into the right spirit. And if you can't over indulge at this time of the year, when can you? Luckily there is so much going on with the food and drink scene in Sussex, so get stuck into some of the very best.
It's been a strange old year, good and bad, so for now forget about it all and have a very merry Christmas!

Is another festive classic from Sussex author Karen Swan. She tells Absolutely about research, writing two books a year and getting a day and a half o over the festivities
Karen Swan is prolific. She writes two books each year – one for the summer period and one for the Christmas season. Previous summer titles include The Spanish Promise, The Hidden Beach and The Secret Path and for winter, Christmas at Ti any’s, The Christmas Secret and Together by Christmas Her books are known for their evocative locations and Karen sees travel as vital research for each story. She loves to set deep, complicated love stories within twisting plots. All I Want for Christmas is the latest unmissable cosy and escapist festive story. Darcy Cotterell’s festive season in Copenhagen turns into a journey of unexpected discoveries when her best friend, Freja, enlists her on a dating app to ensure she doesn’t spend Christmas alone. Although Darcy is primarily occupied with her PhD and a groundbreaking discovery in Danish art, her encounters with Max Lorensen, a charismatic yet arrogant lawyer, stir
undeniable feelings despite their initial attempt to keep things professional. Their evolving relationship hits a snag upon Darcy’s realisation of Max’s hidden agenda, intertwining love, ambition, and the spirit of Christmas in a narrative that explores the complexities of trust and romance. We sat down with Karen to find out more.
Q Let’s start with All I Want For Christmas – what can you tell us about it?
A This story follows Darcy, an Art History PhD student studying in Copenhagen who is tasked with identifying a newlyfound painting by Denmark’s greatest painter. The plot was inspired by the recent real life discovery of a Van Gogh self portrait uncovered when another of his paintings was undergoing scanning prior to conservation. It had been painted over and only modern techniques enabled the image to be seen. I liked the idea of a hidden past coming to light and linking it to a historic tragedy.
Q Did you head to Copenhagen to do research for the book?
A Absolutely, I always visit and scope out
the locations in which I set my books. The exception to that was The Secret Path, set in Costa Rica, which was written during Covid. My son ended up visiting a year later on his gap year and I asked him to visit one of the sites featured in the book. His response: you write books?
Q Who are the main characters and where do they tend to come from in your writing process?
A Each character has to be ‘found’ and as in real life when you meet someone new and have to break through chitchat to hit upon something more meaningful, I only really got to know Darcy and the other characters as I sat in the scenes with them. It can be slow-going finding their voice and thank god for the edit process; a lot of revision and smoothing out happens with the characters once the first draft is down and the mechanics of the plot are worked out. In this book Darcy lives with her flatmate Freja who is another brilliant academic, but with very ‘up’ energy; the hero Max was a challenge as he’s supremely arrogant, which is fun to write, but
“I LIKED THE IDEA OF A HIDDEN PAST COMING TO LIGHT”
it means there’s a mountain to climb asking the readers to then get on board with him. I had to dismantle his defences without breaking him.
Q There’s romance involved in the storyline, but would you describe it as a romantic novel?
A For me, it’s a mystery first and love story second. The romance is there of course but when writing it, I was more concerned with unspooling the mystery, feeding out clues and building up the
relationships between all the characters. But having said that, the romance is a fire burning in the room and bringing a heat to the action. It’s not my primary focus, but it is still a vital element.
Q Why have you chosen to write two books a year?
A This came about accidentally when early on in my career, I had to almost completely rewrite a book – cutting it from 100k words to 30k and then building it back up again, in time for it to get
picked up by the retailers for Christmas. It was a horrendous experience, but enormously enlightening as it made me realise how much I had procrastinated before. There’s no denying it’s a gruelling schedule and it’s not for most writers, but it seems to work quite well for me.
Q What is your typical writing process these days?
A It’s easier now my children are older and I don’t have school runs and sports matches or dance classes to work around. I’d say it’s a typical 9-5 except when I’m on deadline, I work seven days a week, for weeks on end. Much tea is required and my two dogs sleeping on my feet help keep me anchored to my desk.
Q It’s nearly two decades since you moved to Sussex – what originally was the pull?
A A university friend had moved out here
so I came to visit for lunch one day, just as we were beginning to think about leaving London too. I drove through Lindfield and completely fell in love with it (I still love it). Additionally, when my mother moved over from Ireland when she was 16, she came to live with her aunt in Hove so that felt like a root of sorts and ‘permission’ to settle here.
Q What has kept you here?
A Without doubt the Ashdown Forest. I’ll never tire of all the trails and finding new routes. I think one of my favourite walks has to be just over the road from Gills Lap – the steep valley there and the huge view at the top is just breathtaking.
Q Do you get much time to sit back and relax over Christmas?
A Absolutely not! I’m frenzied from September, right up until the turkey is put on the table on Christmas Day. But the moment we sit down to eat, my duties are over and I collapse for a day and a half – until I have to start writing again on the 27th. I wish I could take the week o , but needs must.
Q Do you have favourite spots in Sussex at this time of the year?
A I go to Lindfield for co ees, present shopping at Doodie Stark and I have beauty treatments at Nova; I go to Neilson boutique in Forest Row for SoH candles and special gifts; we choose and chop our Christmas tree at Goddenwick near Ardingly. If I can justify it, I’ll have a spa day at South Lodge near Horsham, which is my absolute favourite place to retreat to.
Q What does 2025 hold in store?
A I’ve just concluded my fourth and final book in the Wild Isle series, set on the Scottish island of St Kilda, so I can’t wait for my readers to finally get the answers they’ve been waiting for! I’m also excited about the new book I’m about to start writing. It’s very di erent and it’s going to be invigorating putting my mind in a completely new space. It’s set in Puglia in the 1950s and that story really does revolve around a very big love a air. I visited Puglia last month so it’s all in my head now and I can’t wait to start setting it down on paper.

“It has amazed over 11 million spectators, in 22 countries, on four continents”
Cirque du Soleil’s latest production is a stunning mix of spectacle and fantasy
orteo, one of Cirque du Soelil’s most enchanting productions, is set to open at London’s famed Royal Albert Hall in January 2025. A wholly unique production with a stage that splits the venue into two halves, the show first premiered in Montreal in April 2005, and has since amazed over 11 million spectators, in 22 countries, on four continents. Corteo will be presented at the Royal Albert Hall from 9th January. Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.
The clown’s dreamlike imagination pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

In a Cirque du Soleil first, the stage is central in the arena and divides the venue into two, with each half of the audience facing the other half, giving a unique perspective not only of the show, but also a performer’s eye view of the audience. Corteo is also the heaviest show that Cirque du Soleil has brought to the Royal Albert Hall, suspending a massive 67
Cirque du Soleil started its much-loved annual residency at the Royal Albert Hall in 1996, and is now a staple of the entertainment calendar in London, as the famous venue becomes a permanent big top for over two months each year.
Corteo will open at the Royal Albert Hall on 9th January, and must close on 2nd March 2025. Tickets are available to purchase now via the Cirque du Soleil website via cirquedusoleil.com

The Little Botanical in Runcton have a new Christmas Collection out, which is a dream for plant lovers old and new alike
Sussex-based The Little Botanical is excited to introduce their 2024 Christmas Collection with a seasonal range to suit every taste and interior. Featuring everything from stylish greenery and personalised pots to miniChristmas trees and gorgeous gift sets, the new collection is perfect for gifting or adding a touch of Christmas to the home. Co-founder of The Little Botanical, Morag Hill, chatted to Absolutely to tell us more about what to expect this festive season.
Q When do you start planning for Christmas?
A We normally start planning for Christmas in July and work on our photoshoots and product range to ensure we have the best selection of plants, pots and gorgeous gifts to entice our consumers.
Q Is the Christmas collection enjoyable to create and work on?
A As a team, we love Christmas so it’s always an exciting time to prepare for. We always ensure we have something new that people will enjoy, and lots to choose from at the right volumes so that no one is disappointed.
Q What festive plants will you be offering?
A We have lots of festive plants perfect for home styling. We grow Poinsettias here on our nursery, which when placed anywhere, gives a beautiful pop of red. We also source some stunning Living Christmas Trees, which are perfect for dressing the centre of the table.
Q Do you have a favourite plant to decorate your own home?
A I am a big fan of Poinsettias as I think they look so Christmassy. I like the white Poinsettia in our Almond Ceramic from
November time, then I go straight to red from mid-November, as it’s such a lovely way to begin to add a little bit of Christmas through the house, before the tree goes up.
Q What would we find in your gift sets?
A We have some lovely wellbeing gift sets; from Digital Detox, Facial Care and Pamper sets (with plants of course!) to Luxury Candle and Plant sets. We are also launching a new gift box this year which makes a wonderful Gift for Her. It contains a hot water bottle in a linen cover with a box of chocolates and a plant.
Q Why do you think a houseplant makes a wonderful gift?
A Plants bring a smile to people’s faces. The joy people get from seeing a new leaf uncurl, or a plant grow in size, is genuine. It’s just lovely to give a living gift they can enjoy for months to come, and they’ll think of that person every time they water it or care for it.
Q A key part of your business is how the plants are presented, so what kind of pots can we expect to see?
A We have some lovely deep green glazed ceramics along with our classic green and gold combination, and we are introducing a burnt orange and glazed pot too.
Q How has 2024 been for you?
A We have had an exciting year. We exhibited at the RHS Chelsea Flower show and won a Silver Medal, which was a huge commitment from the whole team and a great result. We have also launched lots of new products like the Monstera Thai Constellation and a whole range of rare and unusual plants that customers are loving.
Q You were inspired to launch The Little Botanical in 2017. How have you evolved in that time?
A When we launched our website, we only had 20-30 products on there. Now, we range a selection of bespoke pots, our own candles and designed plant care accessories.
Q Why has West Sussex been the perfect place for your business?
A Our family is part of a long-line of growers in Chichester and it’s here we grow our plants, so it was a natural place to open our fi rst shop. We are on the outskirts of Chichester in Runcton, which is just a stone’s throw away from where the majority of our plants are grown.
Q What do you look to offer when people visit your shop?
A We offer a range of unique and different plants and lots of advice when people visit us. We provide excellent plant care and tips on where is best to place your plant once you get it home.
Q What are your plans for 2025?
A We have an exciting year ahead with some big plans for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day with a whole new range in the planning.
Q What makes a perfect Christmas?
A The perfect Christmas for me is to be with my three children and husband. We often spend Christmas morning on West Wittering beach with the dog and then at home for Christmas lunch. Obviously, our table decorations will be plants and poinsettias and a few twinkly lights!

The
Vawdrey House were
recently recognised by the British Institute of Interior Design, and this project by the Haywards Heath studio shows just why
The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) recently announced the winners of the 2024 BIID Interior Design Awards. The ceremony took place on Thursday 17th October at the spectacular Drapers’ Hall in London and was presented by architectural and social historian, Dr Lucy Worsley, in front of an audience of over 200 design industry professionals.
Seven regional category prizes were awarded, as well as Interior of the Year for the best interior design project in the UK and the Anna Whitehead Prize, awarded for the best achievement in sustainable interior design.
For the South East, The Vawdrey House – who have a studio in Haywards Heath –were Highly Commended. Keen to find out more about them, we asked The Vawdrey House’s Director, Jennifer Hamilton to take us through a recent project across the border in Langton Green…
Set back from the road on a quiet village lane, this seemed the perfect location for our client’s family home. The large garden backed onto their parents’ property, so when it came on the market, they snapped it up.
The house that stood on the site however was not to their taste. A red brick neo-Georgian suburban development property, the house had the typical limitations associated with this type of developer approach. Low ceilings, conventional layout with small rooms and small windows, made the house feel cramped and lacking in flow and natural daylight. We explored various options with the client,
including knocking the property down and building a completely new structure. However, this felt wasteful and unnecessary. Working closely with the family to understand the way they lived, we settled upon an adaptive approach that sought to enhance the existing structure, incorporating and extending it to create a home that would look, feel and function completely differently to its previous form.
The outside of the home has been totally transformed. A pair of salvaged French glazed doors invite you in and offer a hint of the eclectic nature of the interiors beyond, but from the street it is almost impossible to imagine that this strikingly modern
lateral home started life as a humble suburban neo-Georgian new build.
A two-storey brick extension was built to the southern flank of the building housing additional bedrooms and bathrooms on the upper floor with a large front to back living area on the ground floor. A new zinc roof was added and the existing red bricks were painted black ensuring that the old and new parts of the building are no longer distinguishable.
In the existing building a double height glazed internal atrium was created in the centre of the home providing height, space and light as soon as you enter the home. Sometimes you need to lose space,
to create space. On the upper floor this enabled a galleried landing to be created with sweeping picture frame views across the gardens and hills beyond.
A large open plan kitchen resides in the old part of the building embracing the existing lower ceilings to create a more intimate atmosphere. The island has been made from reclaimed timber doors but features all modern conveniences.
The flooring throughout the ground floor is micro cement, lending an industrial edge, meeting reclaimed herringbone timber in the living area. To gain better head height on the ground floor we sunk the floor by a couple of steps in the new extension and added floor to ceiling glazed openings on every elevation, bathing the room in natural daylight from all directions. A cantilevered corner sliding door has created a dramatic yearround connection to the garden that was so instrumental to the brief.
The windows in the old part of the house remained largely in the same openings reducing the amount of structural change necessary, but all of them were enlarged to full height, flooding the home with light.
On the northern flank of the building, we connected the house to the garage which was converted into a gym with a mezzanine chill out space above for the children, partially clad in OSB board. The link incorporates a new bathroom, utility, and study.
The master bedroom windows now run floor to ceiling and a contrasting timberframed sliding window was added, creating a juliette balcony, as well as a visual connection between the windows on the upper floors with the sliding timber kitchen door beneath.
The interiors are a fabulous reflection of the homeowners. Working with the client we developed the interior concept designs which our enormously resourceful and highly creative client, sensitively meshed with heirloom pieces, antique finds, and modern functionality to create a bright, eclectic, incredibly individual home with a few fun whimsical touches.

The Brighton Kitchen Company: offering inspiring Shaker kitchen design to last a lifetime
Narchitectural style. Every detail of their kitchens reflects the bespoke nature of their work, creating spaces as functional as they are beautiful.
estled in the picturesque village of Horsted Keynes, West Sussex, this bespoke in-frame Shaker kitchen by The Brighton Kitchen Company is a stunning example of how traditional Shaker design can be seamlessly combined with modern luxury and architectural flair. As specialists in creating both classic and contemporary Shaker kitchens, Alex Kraus and the team deliver exceptional personal service, unmatched expertise, and a meticulous attention to detail, positioning them as leaders in the West Sussex luxury kitchen design scene.
Alex Kraus, their Design Director, has spent over a decade crafting highend bespoke Shaker kitchens. His deep technical knowledge of Shaker design ensures that every kitchen is not only visually striking, but also fully tailored to suit each client’s unique space and
At The Brighton Kitchen Company, they take pride in their close relationship with their cabinet maker, Stoneham Kitchens, a British manufacturer renowned for their impeccable craftsmanship and heritage. With a legacy spanning over 150 years, Stoneham Kitchens has been crafting bespoke cabinetry since 1864, earning a Royal Warrant for their dedication to quality and innovation. This partnership allows them to offer their clients kitchens that combine timeless design with cutting-edge technology, ensuring every detail meets the highest standards. Working closely with Stoneham Kitchens means that each project benefits from their rich history of British joinery and our shared commitment to creating beautifully tailored, long-lasting kitchens that reflect their clients’ lifestyles and aspirations.
One of the highlights of this Horsted Keynes project is the bespoke walk-in pantry, cleverly positioned in a recessed
area adjacent to the kitchen. This thoughtfully designed pantry maximizes functionality and makes a statement with its custom-built solid walnut ladder, which runs along a bespoke rail across the full width of the space. “The ladder not only optimizes vertical storage but adds a distinctive character to the room,” explains Alex.
The large kitchen island takes centre stage in this design, serving as both a functional workspace and a social hub.
A flush-fitting Bora hob and a compact prep sink are paired with a brushed brass Quooker boiling water tap, ensuring a seamless blend of style and functionality.
To fully utilize the available space, the team incorporated floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, enhancing the room’s sense of height and creating ample storage. The internal features include dovetailed walnut drawers, adjustable shelving, and pull-out larders, all illuminated with integrated lighting for easy access and an added touch of luxury.
Details such as handles are integral to the overall aesthetic of a Shaker kitchen. In this project, they selected brushed brass knurled handles to add warmth
and texture while complementing the oversized cabinetry. The tactile design of these handles enhances both form and function.
At The Brighton Kitchen Company, they
pride themselves on offering clients a seamless journey from concept to completion. With a single point of contact throughout the entire process, Alex and the team provide a fully managed service, ensuring that every stage of the project is stress-free. “We oversee everything, from the initial consultation to installation,” says Alex. “For projects that are part of a larger renovation, we also collaborate directly with the client’s building contractor to ensure the design integrates perfectly with the wider project.”
This Horsted Keynes kitchen is a testament to The Brighton Kitchen Company’s dedication to creating bespoke, highly functional, and exquisitely designed spaces. With over 30 years of combined expertise, they are proud to be the trusted choice for discerning clients seeking kitchens of unparalleled quality. Their large cutting edge kitchen showroom is located in Hickstead, West Sussex, where clients can explore inspiring designs and share their ideas over a consultation with Alex and the team. Whether you are planning a kitchen renovation or building a new home, they look forward to working with you to create a space that reflects your lifestyle and design vision.
The kitchen truly is the heart of the home at Christmas – but what trends can we expect to see in 2025? One expert shows the way
From rustic farmhouses to contemporary abodes, bespoke kitchen specialists, The Main Company, design some of the most unique kitchens for their customers. As we head into 2025, Alex Main, director of The Main Company, shares his insights into upcoming trends, including the everlasting popularity of green, a more refined approach to wood and a touch of fluting.
“Wood is being embraced in the home and in the kitchen more than ever before.
From cabinet fronts to accent details, homeowners are steering towards a lighter, more refined look with wood,” Alex says. “Part of the desire to create a more natural looking space, we have found that this elegant, more refined approach to incorporating wood is following through into other areas of the home.
“Green is still one of the most popular colour choices for kitchens,” Alex adds. “With a slight tendency towards darker, moodier palettes, this shade is likely to remain prevalent throughout next year as well. Whilst the darker tones are the most
popular, we have noticed a lean towards more uncommon shades recently – from bolder olive tones to more jewel-based teals and emeralds.”
Reena Simon, designer and content creator, designed an exclusive kitchen collection with The Main Company this year. “There’s a noticeable trend towards what I have seen described as ‘quiet luxury’ in kitchen design,” she says. “This trend also aligns with the broader movement towards sensorial design, where the focus is on creating environments that engage the senses in a calming and subtle way. People are seeking kitchens that offer a serene, almost spa-like atmosphere, achieved through a blend of textures, soft palettes, and minimalistic details. Additionally, there’s a growing desire for personalisation and uniqueness in design. Rather than opting for cookie-
cutter solutions, homeowners are embracing bespoke elements that reflect their individual tastes and lifestyles.
“From glass doors to cabinetry fronts, fluting has become tremendously popular,” Reena continues. “Perfect when paired with a more refined approach to light wood, different fluted or grooved details add a sought-after, unique touch to kitchens, creating a more lived-in and individual feel.
“The desire to create and make unique design statements has remained an important factor in kitchen design this year, in particular when it comes to different patterns and materials. Homeowners are looking to add personality and individuality through a number of new and exciting ways, such as hessian-effect materials on cabinet fronts, opting for wallpaper in-fill panels or even having hand painted specialist kitchen panels. We expect to see an increase in these more personal touches next year, allowing homeowners to really put their stamp on their kitchens.”

Sustainability is at the forefront of people’s minds, and how you heat your home can make a big difference to your own carbon footprint.
Good Energy has been helping households to enjoy a greener life for almost a quarter of a century, originally supplying 100 per cent renewable electricity to homes and businesses, but recently expanding into the installation of domestic heat pumps and solar panels too.
They source their power from a UK network of more than 2,000 renewable generators including solar farms, wind turbines and hydroelectric projects. Last year they exported a huge amount of clean energy to the grid – enough to power almost 230,000 average houses for a whole year, preventing the emission of almost 120,000 tonnes of carbon.
One of the best ways for households to cut their carbon emissions and cut costs
is to switch to a heat pump. Grants of £7,500 are available, and there are proposals for them to be the default option for all new homes by 2025.
However, a big challenge is the level of misinformation around their installation and operation. Good Energy commissioned Opinium to survey a sample of South East residents on a wide range of topics around sustainability and found 14 per cent wrongly believe a heat pump is louder than a fridge, ten per cent wrongly believe they only work in newer homes, and eight per cent wrongly believe they don’t work in the cold.
Good Energy is campaigning to combat these myths and show that heat pumps are not loud and can work well in older homes. What’s more, they’re four times as efficient as traditional gas boilers and provide consistent warmth throughout the day.
Most homes have traditionally been heated by oil or gas, but these polluting and expensive fossil fuels are exposed to the volatilities of the international energy markets. Heat pumps use electricity
instead – which is increasingly sourced from UK renewable sources – and are therefore the perfect alternative, particularly for offgrid properties with oil or LPG tanks.
Good Energy offers bespoke systems designed around your home, covering new-builds, retrofits and period properties, supported by ten-year warranties and remote monitoring capabilities for long-term reassurance.
Check out the ‘Green home stories’ on their website – featuring customers who have already saved money on their bills –and their ‘ten myths about air source heat pumps busted’. You’ll also find their ‘Meet the Generators’ series of films, which throw the spotlight on their partners across the country who are providing us with truly renewable energy.
Good Energy can support your journey towards a cleaner and greener future. Visit goodenergy.co.uk to find out more

The Lancing family of schools offers children from nursery to 18 years a wonderful journey of discovery and inspiration. Throughout the school years, they are really able to focus on the individual talents of pupils. We find out more about the 'golden years of Prep' inside. lancingcollege.co.uk
Set in the heart of Sussex, the Lancing family of schools o ers children from nursery to 18 years a wonderful journey of discovery and inspiration. Together, Lancing College, Lancing Prep Hove, Lancing Prep Worthing and Little Lancing Nursery and Forest School focus on the individual talents and needs of their pupils, inspiring them to learn, become independent and to excel at every stage in their life.
The Lancing ethos cultivates responsible, sociable, and considerate young people, promoting confidence and self-reliance in a lively and enjoyable environment.
Many of the children at Lancing Prep Hove and Lancing Prep Worthing continue their education at Lancing College and enjoy the vast amount of academic and co-curricular opportunities the school o ers. Pupils can

join the College in the Third Form (Year 9) after completing Year 7 and 8 in their Prep Schools where they have grown and matured.
All schools feel passionate about completing the ‘golden years of Prep School’ and feel that this provides them with an extension of childhood at a time when the world seems keen on whisking it away.
Headmistress of Lancing Prep Hove, Kirsty Keep comments: “E ective PSHE programmes and excellent pastoral care provided at Prep Schools empower Year 8 Prep School leavers to tackle the challenges and opportunities that will unfold for them at Senior Schools. Similarly, strong academic programmes should encourage them to be self-reliant and independent, ready for the change in teaching and learning that will come as they become Senior School students.”
Year 7 and 8 children at Prep School are provided far more opportunities to take on leadership positions than when they are the youngest in a Senior School setting. They become important role models,
looked up to by their younger peers and this allows them to foster responsibility.
Head of Admissions at Lancing College, Hilary Dugdale, says: “There is a qualitative di erence in the sense of security and maturity of children who join Lancing into the Third Form having completed Years 7 and 8 at Prep School. Part of this is the confidence and ease with which they interact with adults. They have that practical experience of being trusted and being trusting.’”
Head of Lancing Prep Worthing, Francesca Milling, adds: “A continuity of support and being truly known can o er great stability during that critical developmental stage. Prep School environments usually have smaller class sizes, a strong support system and the individualised attention helping a young person to build resilience and confidence.”
The Lancing family of schools feels strongly that when children are allowed to be children, brilliant and incredible things happen.

Create Music and Glyndebourne widen singing education programme One Voice to more children across Sussex
Create Music, lead organisation for the Sussex music education hub, and Glyndebourne opera house have expanded their educational partnership, One Voice, to enable more children across Sussex to experience and benefit from the joy of singing.
One Voice is a year-round education programme to develop engagement in music and increase standards of singing and vocal confidence skills in schools. The first partnership of its kind between a world-leading opera house and a local music education hub, One Voice gives thousands of local schoolchildren the chance to learn to sing and perform together on stage with the Glyndebourne Chorus and members of its orchestra.
This year, more children than ever will take part benefitting an estimated 5-8,000 children from 92 schools. Over 2,000 will perform live in special festive concerts at venues across Sussex, including De La Warr Pavilion (3 December); Brighton Centre (4 December); Kings Centre, Eastbourne (9 December), and finally Glyndebourne (10-11 December).
Across the year, the Create Music team and singers from the Glyndebourne Chorus will visit schools to rehearse with young people, helping to grow their skills and confidence. One Voice also includes a bespoke programme of support for children with special educational needs and disabilities, to ensure pupils from Special Schools can take part.
Create Music is part of Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival and the Music Hub for Sussex and reaches almost 20,000 children across the region through lessons, ensembles, projects, workshops, orchestras and summer
schools. Glyndebourne is one of the most celebrated opera houses in the world, and its Learning & Engagement programme collaborates with people of all backgrounds to spark a lifelong interest in opera and support talented artists of the future.
The One Voice partnership combines the expertise of both organisations to encourage thousands of children across Sussex to learn to sing and experience the joy of performing, with the aim that for many it will spark a lasting interest in music. One Voice is made possible with additional support from De La Warr Pavilion and Arts Council England.
Lucy Perry, Head of Learning & Engagement at Glyndebourne, adds:
“Glyndebourne is committed to working in partnership with local schools to support singing, as we know the huge benefits that music provides for education and wellbeing. The One Voice programme provides unforgettable experiences for schoolchildren as they sing alongside members of the Glyndebourne Chorus and Glyndebourne Sinfonia. We have seen time and again the impact these encounters can have, igniting new passions and inspiring young people to continue singing.”
