Editor’s LETTER

S

mmer officially starts in south west London with the tennis. And the tennis starts long before the actual tennis because the build up is huge. The entire world is set to descend on Wimbledon for the annual extravaganza – and even those local not interested in nets, racquets and balls can't avoid the excitement. We were lucky enough to have lunch with tennis icons Boris Becker and Annabel Croft this month and to listen to them reminisce over their years in SW19. So if that doesn't herald the start of summer, then what does? So with that, we're looking at new things to wear for the season – and for once we're not just focused on pretty things, and neither are we being too optimistic about the weather. We do have lots of pretty things, of course – especially ones with tassles, and others with stripes – but this summer, we are also considering the welly. Not just any welly, of course. We're only interested in the Rolls Royce of wellies, the ones made by Dubarry, which might not be the prettiest things you've ever seen but still, our writer was sold instantly. So if the weather's less than perfect for the tennis, you know what to do... Enjoy June. ◆

Game, Set & Lunch

Absolutely catches up with Boris Becker and Annabel Croft at Wimbledon’s San Lorenzo to talk tennis, success and SW19 Wo r d s H e l e n B r o w n Photography Rebecca Noonan

A

16 year old Boris Becker was brought to San Lorenzo Knightsbridge fresh from his success at Queen’s Club by tennis legend and coach, Ion Tiriac. He ordered a steak and pasta, followed by a lemon sorbet, and that became his pre-match ritual. It was what he ordered the night before his record breaking singles victory in 1985. ‘That became my diet before every single match,’ Boris says, sitting now at a corner table in San Lorenzo Wimbledon over 30 years later with Annabel Croft. Founded in 1969, San Lorenzo is as much a part of Wimbledon heritage as tennis whites, strawberries and champagne. Stationed at the bottom of the hill in this charming borough, the upmarket Italian boasts a list of diners that reads like the Wimbledon tournament leader board. Ghigo Berni and his brother Paolo – sons of Lorenzo and Mara Berni of the legendary San Lorenzo in Beauchamp Place – have fed just about every tennis champion of the past five

decades. Andre Agassi had the local mothers of Wimbledon fawning over him as he dined and Martina Navratilova hosted her retirement party here. Stan Smith comes here to eat and his picture hangs on the wall. Last year, the place was frequented by Maria Sharapova and the Williams sisters, to name just a few. The floors are tiled with cream slabs and the walls hung with quirky and considered art. Alongside Stan Smith are black and white shots of Nastase and Adriano Panatta. Beyond the bar is a second, quieter dining room and outside a final al fresco area. We’re here with restaurant owner Ghigo and Annabel Croft - former British number one tennis player, presenter and frequent visitor to San Lorenzo. The three share an affectionate friendship that dates back to Boris and Annabel’s playing days. Tennis stars these days are arguably fitter than ever, thanks to fierce coaches and stricter diets. But what was impressive about the players of the young Tiriac generation was their ability to perform exceptionally on court whilst maintaining a spirited social life off it. Annabel and Boris reminisce fondly on

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE LEFT TO RIGHT: BORIS, ANNABEL AND GHIGO AT SAN LORENZO

GHIGO BERNI & his brother PAOLO HAVE FED just about EVERY TENNIS GREAT of the past FIVE DECADES Wednesday nights spent at China White and dinners-turned-discos at Tramp. ‘I remember seeing Boris, hobbling around on crutches,’ Annabel recalls. ‘He was 16 and beating Bill Scanlon on court two and he’d sprained his ankle. I remember going to a nightclub and he was there on his crutches,’ she says. ‘It was an era when players were much more photographed,’ Ghigo tells us. ‘We would have paparazzi all the time, especially for people like Gabriela Sabatini and Annabel,’ he says. ‘I remember those days really fondly,’ Ghigo continues. It was during this time - when Boris was here pretty much every night, at the same table - that he met Ghigo and his family. “We’re talking 32-33 years ago. I don’t think I’ve eaten more food out of any other restaurant in the world,’ Boris says. Ghigo’s parents are the godparents of Boris’

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

B&C_June17_BORIS BECKER2.indd 22

children and there is even a pizza named after his son, Noah. Boris’ generation was the last to really enjoy a decent dinner and drink after knocking a few balls about on the court. ‘We underestimate - especially the top players - how much pressure they are under now,’ he says. ‘They’re all part of a bigger picture and that is the entertainment industry. You have kids and young adults watching - impressionable people - and the players become role models even though they don’t want to be,’ he explains. So did he realise the magnitude of what he’d achieved at the time? No, he says he didn’t have a clue; he believes ‘it was the innocence of youth.' It was the mid 80’s and sports didn’t really exist in Germany at the time, with the exception of a few footballers.’ When he hit that last brutal serve against Kevin Curren to lift the Wimbledon title, he became part of championship folklore. We look back now and see that of course he was always going to do well. Playing abilities aside, he had the mentality to completely disengage with outside pressures when on the court. ‘I think it’s one of the harshest sports in terms of psychology, because you can’t really

prepare for it,’ Annabel says. Boris credits Tiriac for this winning sports mindset. “He would say the purpose of today is to win the match. So what do we have to do today to win the match?’ Boris recalls. This strength of mind is the mark of a great player. Boris believes it’s part of the battle; 'You don’t win a tennis match just by hitting the ball,’ he says. ‘As a coach, I thought it was important to practise a lot, but I rated the match mentality much higher,’ he continues. This was certainly evident during his stint with Djokovic. After crashing out of the French Open final, Djokovic went on to lift the Wimbledon trophy under the guidance of Boris. ‘It’s how you react and deal with certain situations that counts,’ he tells us, ‘It’s not what you do in the practice court, it’s what you do in the match.’ Boris now lives in Wimbledon and his career has turned full circle. This year again we’ll see him commentating at the tournament. And as for coaching, will we see him return to the sidelines? ‘I wouldn’t rule it out, a few players have asked me both male and female,’ he says. ‘Coaching is a very time consuming commitment though. I’m on standby for my family, but you have to be on standby for the players,’ he explains. For him, the ‘weekend is the weekend’ which he enjoys at the home he has made here in Wimbledon, still eating three times a week at San Lorenzo. It’s easy to see why he, Annabel and so many tennis greats have developed such a fondness for the place. It has the alluring charm of an authentic Italian trattoria and with food to match. As a mecca for the tennis world, and with the Wimbledon fortnight on the horizon, this iconic eatery will always be an inherent aspect of Wimbledon’s heritage.

Booked Up The Balham Literary Festival returns to the Bedford. Absolutely has a preview Wo r d s r ac h e l w o r t h

F

rom 8 to 11 June, Dulwich Books will once again host a long weekend of literary treats. The Balham Literary Festival returns to The Bedford for its second edition with the theme ‘Happy, Healthy, Home?’. Delving into the depths of war, migration mental and physical health and the concept of ‘home’, the festival and its eminent guests will offer an interactive exploration into the pushes and pulls of the modern human condition. Highlights of the festival will include talks by Thomasina Miers (cook, author and founder of Mexican restaurant chain Wahaca), the award-winning children’s author Jane Clarke and a discussion between The Guardian’s Patrick Wintour and former ambassador Sir Jeremy Greenstock, whose inside account of Britain’s role in the the Iraq war was previously banned. Other guest speakers will include neurosurgeon and bestselling author Henry Mars, Mercury-Nominated singer-songwriter Kathryn Williams and British-Egyptian writer and performer Sabrina Mahfouz. Alexandra Heminsley and Jenny Landreth will discuss the transformative power they have found in swimming, as explored in their respective life-affirming novels. In addition, Jay Griffiths will divulge her personal experiences with manic depression and the pilgrimage to Spain it sent her on. Ahead of the event, visitors will also have

the chance to submit their dilemmas via email to Susan Elderkin, author of The Novel Cure, who will lead an afternoon tea ‘therapy’ workshop. The festival’s further line-up of crime fiction authors including Angela Clarke, Annemarie Neary and Anna Mazola will pay homage to its location, since Balham’s Bedford Pub was the site of a Victorian murder trial. These novel and richly varied approaches to the concept of home and health should serve as the perfect tonic to the flurry of the general election, satiating any lingering questions regarding nation-building and international relations. For a further literary fix, a pop-

up bookshop run by festival organisers Dulwich Books will be open throughout the weekend. Speaking of the festival as a whole, organiser Susie Nicklin said: “This summer we turn our gaze to the concept of home. How do we create a space - both within and without - that will nurture us and enable us to thrive, rather than simply to survive? What happens when that space is threatened by war, displacement, colonisation, annexation? Without a sense of ease, or with disease, how can we achieve the peace that a successful home offers? “We’ll look at mental and physical health, life-enhancing activities like eating, swimming and singing, present events for children and even prescribe books to make you feel better. Enjoy a warm welcome, music and poetry, browse our pop-up bookshop and relax in the cosy, shabby chic atmosphere of The Bedford, a legendary venue and a home from home for all Balhamites.” ◆ 8-11 June, the Bedford, 77 Bedford Hill, SW12 balhamliteraryfestival.co.uk

between the different collections. We always take photos of everything we buy to create a seasonal moodboard. This allows us to show clients ahead of the season and generate some early interest.

ABSOLUTELY: How have you got to where you are now? OLIVIER LIEVRE: I have worked in fashion ever since I moved to London 29 years ago. My fashion career took me from Harvey Nichols to working for several independent boutiques. Among them was Matches Fashion, who I worked for as a fashion buyer in the 90s, and Siena Fashions, which brought me to Bellevue Road. ABS: How do you go about curating a fashion boutique edit? OL: I think it is very important to have a good mix of brands that offer different things to different people. We are very lucky that we know the majority of our clients well and have learnt through the years what they like. This makes our buying decisions easier and less of a risk. But it is also good to push the boundaries and test things out. Sometimes you can be surprised. One thing's certain - you need to create a harmonious balance

ABS: What do you look out for in a fashion brand? OL: For us there are four key elements: wearability, individuality, quality and fit. The labels we choose have to be fashionable and have their own interpretations of current trends, but they mustn't be overly trendy. We appeal to a stylish clientele but not fashionistas, therefore our clients must feel comfortable in what they wear. We always do a bit of research on a label. Fit is crucial if you want to achieve sales. In this instance we do not simply rely on showroom models but my buying assistant tries everything on to understand how the garments fit. There's no such thing as standard sizes any more. ABS: How important is the interior for a boutique? What inspired yours? OL: Extremely! It sets the mood. Coming to Olivier’s lounge is a bit like walking into my front room. We want our clients to relax, have fun and enjoy the whole shopping experience without any pressure.

COMING TO

Olivier's Lounge is a bit like WALKING into MY FRONT ROOM

ABS: What can a boutique offer in the age of e-commerce? OL: I have to admit that e-commerce is a big competitor to brick and mortar retail. Yet I still believe that however sophisticated the online experience is, it does not have the human touch. A lot of our clients want to be guided through their choices. They want to feel and touch beautiful garments. ABS: What are your favourite timeless fashion brands? OL: For us I would have to say Rosso 35 and Alpha Studio. They're both Italian so therefore great with cut and fabrics. Sophisticated with refined detailing but easy to adapt to your own style - what more could you want? â—†

Sole Love

A pair of Dubarry boots can set hearts a-flutter, as Absolutely discovers Wo r d s J a s m i n e R o b e r t s o n

I

t’s probably a bit weird to fetishise a pair of welly boots but I have since I first clapped eyes on them. I remember it well, they were attached to the strapping legs of a chiselled young man. An invitingly rich brown, sexily slouched and artfully slung, and that was just the wellies. They were Dubarrys of course, an intoxicating confection of leather, Gore Tex and – phwoar!! - rubber and I’ve wanted a pair ever since. On discovering that they are ludicrously expensive, upwards of £300, dear reader, just made them all the more desirable. Of course, at this price, Dubarry boots are not proper country. Maybe the chatelaine of Downton might take them for

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

NH_May17_DUBARRY indd.indd 42

There is much said about the expertise and Irish know-how that goes into making Dubarrys but I can attest to the truth of one of their boasts about the boots’ soles. Specifically developed by Dubarry, the sole is directly moulded to the upper to create one piece, with no gluing or stitching, giving a perfect seal to keep out water. I put this to the test, wading into an icy stream to assist two five-year olds who had gone in over their wellies. As I waded in, my friend claimed that she could actually see the water being repelled by that superior leather. Thanks to the moulding, my feet were bone dry. Used to Hunter wellies that spring holes within months of wearing them, this was a joy for my tootsies to experience. Actually Durbarrys are really nothing like wellies. That’s their USP really. They are a leather country boot. I hate walking in wellies, tiring for legs and feet but I have now walked miles in my Dubarrys and they remain very comfortable. For those flat of feet like me, however, a note of caution: the Dubarry sole isn’t very supportive. I slipped my orthotics in and was quite happy, but it is worth considering when buying. I do think Dubarrys should be reclaimed by proper country folk. They are an absolute investment piece. With some TLC and lots of leathery love, I expect mine to last for years. Of course, my obsession has not been sated. I now want the Wexfords, a more shaped, feminine pair than the Galways. I’ve come over a bit Cathy and Heathcliff and want to team them with swirly skirts and mysterious moors. Whoever knew wellies could be so goddamn sexy? u dubarryboots.com

a stroll, but no one mucking out horses or shovelling cow dung is going to do it in £300 wellies. No, these are for folk like you and me who want to play ‘down on the farm’ while doing the organic shop at Daylesford or jiving in the mud at Wilderness. That’s not to say they are not up to the job. I took delivery of my new Galway boots in the depths of icy winter. They arrived cossetted in tissue paper from which I cruelly tore them to set out into the frozen wastes of Oxfordshire. The weekend of their test run was the coldest of the year. The ground was bone hard, ice was thick on puddles and inches deep in animal troughs. My children, with feet in thin rubber soles, started to complain about cold toes. My feet, on a much thicker rubber sole and higher off the sub-zero ground, were warm and toasty.

on-invasive skin treatments with tangible, longlasting results are big news for 2017. The latest cuttingedge treatment is ClearLift and it is nothing short of revolutionary. It’s a non-invasive skin treatment which uses laser technology to work not on the superficial layers of skin, but beneath the skin’s surface, stimulating the renewal processes and restructuring collagen for smoother, firmer, tighter and clearer skin. Unlike other laser treatments, the treatment doesn’t hurt at all, with clients describing it as relaxing and warming. "The nice thing about this laser is that it is multi-faceted, so it can treat a variety of things.” Dr Perry explains. It can be used to tighten and lift loose skin, even on difficult areas such as jowls, jawline and neck. Tackling redness and pigmentation or lacklustre skin can make a tremendous difference too, creating a complexion which looks fresher, healthier and more radiant. Treatment is surprisingly quick, around 15-20 minutes for a full-face treatment and little or no downtime afterwards. This makes ClearLift a very attractive option. Cosmedics’ Putney Beauty Salon is one of just a few places in London to offer the treatment. ◆ COS M E D I C S P U T N E Y 4 Disraeli Road, SW15 2DS; 020 7386 0464 cosmedics.co.uk

P E A R LY WHITES

Discover the life-changing potential of full mouth reconstruction What is a full mouth reconstruction? When you have many broken, worn and/or multiple missing teeth, then a full mouth reconstruction may be required. This will often require every tooth to be restored with a combination of veneers, crowns, inlays, onlays, dental implants and dental bridgework. What does full mouth reconstruction involve? The key to a successful full mouth reconstruction is planning. Here's how it’s done:

technology helps us identify and explain what dentistry is required and why. Digital photography, joint and bite analysis are crucial to plan and communicate your treatment needs. 2. COMPUTER AIDED SMILE DESIGN

It’s vital that your full mouth reconstruction not only functions perfectly but looks great. The latest in computer-aided smile design technology allows us to discuss and show you the aesthetic outcome before work starts. 3. 3D PREVIEW

THE TRANSFORMATION

Full mouth rehabilitation is different from a full smile makeover in that it is a necessary procedure. It involves restoring every tooth in a person’s mouth with the primary goal of improving oral health.Ideal candidates may relate to one or more of the following: TMJ syndrome, consistent headaches or migraines, clicking in the jaw, missing teeth, worn, broken, cracked, or chipped teeth or crooked teeth. While a full mouth rehabilitation is not technically a cosmetic procedure, Art of Dentistry Institute focuses on both the beauty and function of every treatment. Tooth-coloured fillings and porcelain crowns are just a couple of cosmetic dental treatment options that ensure a more vibrant, natural-looking result. Persistent headaches or migraines can significantly impact a person’s quality of life. A full mouth rehabilitation will address these concerns and alleviate headaches. Gum disease is another issue addressed with full mouth rehabilitation to ensure that the reconstructed teeth have a healthy foundation. ◆ Dr Sam Afshar DDS MSC Principal Putney Dentists; 2a Dealtry Road, SW15 6NL 020 8785 6772 putneydentists.co.uk

BOTTLED UP

You can also create zones within an existing kitchen or dining room. One way to successfully create a wine room zone is to use glass partitioning walls to section off an area, allowing the space to feel autonomous while also integrating into the surrounding areas. This is a wonderful way to create a feature display of your prized collection which also serves as an alluring invitation to guests when entertaining. The striking McCarron & Co wine room in the picture below left uses bespoke timber framing with inset glass panels to create a zoned off area with an industrial-like feel. Clever feature lighting draws the eye to the display and a set of oak drawers with a slate worktop is a practical use of the space. This room has storage for up to 86 bottles in three independent temperature zones.

However much space you have, there's a bespoke wine storage system to suit Wo r d s e v e h e r b e r t

O

nce dark, damp and uninviting spaces refined to cellars and basements, wine rooms are now fast becoming an integral feature area of the home and a welcome space for entertaining guests. McCarron & Co has seen a sharp rise in demand for wine rooms over the last 12 months and as bespoke designers they love the challenge of combining design aesthetics with practical and functional requirements. When considering incorporating a wine room to your design, firstly think about how much space you are willing to invest. If you are limited on floor space, perhaps think about a wine conditioning unit which can sit within a feature furniture piece with built-in storage for wine glasses. The Art Deco-inspired piece pictured on the far right houses a wine unit with a feature surround of metal stringing inset into a Macassar Ebony frame. This elegant drinks cabinet was designed to create a feature area within a games room and offers a perfect solution in place of a separate wine room.

If you are wanting to create a more traditional wine cellar for your collection, and have suitable storage space, then a custom-made wine racking system is a perfect solution for making the most of every inch of space. In the Somerset-project shown in the main image, McCarron & Co designed and built an impressive wine cellar pairing oak wine racking with a raw-edge limestone worktop. Cleverly designed lighting highlights the curved ceiling and uplighters in the floor mean that the space can be kept light and airy, a welcoming space in which to sample some of the finest vintages. â—†

Releasing a range of products under his own name for the first time in his 40-year career, he developed the SoftBrew coffee pot whose special steel filteris fine enough to deliver full-bodied flavour from grinds of any thickness. From £39.50, sowdenshop.com

Oggetto  Scandinavian design house Stelton led the vogue for Danish stainless steel pieces in the 1960s and it still manufactures Arne Jacobsen’s classic steel coffee pot. Their new Collar collection is made predominantly from matt stoneware with accents of bamboo, oak and brass. Stovetop pot, 67.95, oggetto.com

DRIP FEED

Chemex  The only coffee maker to have a place at the Museum of Modern Art is the Chemex brewer, a simple drip-filter piece that’s designed to create the best flavour and pitch – as long as you measure the coffee-to-water ratio correctly and perfect the pour speed and water temperature. With its wooden belt and hourglass curve, it’s as stylish today, in a laboratory chic way, as it was in 1941. From £37, hasbean.co.uk

2015 BERRY BROS. & RUDD PROVENCE ROSÉ BY CHÂTEAU LA MASCARONNE £12.95 A soft-pink rosé with aromas of wild berries, white peach and, appropriately enough, Provencal herbs. Fresh, crisp and summery, it's the ideal wine to enjoy over May's Bank Holiday weekends. ◆

2015 BEAUJOLAISVILLAGES, LANTIGNIÉ, ALEXANDRE BURGAUD £10.95 A fruity, light style red, perfect for the warmer days. With flavours of black fruits it is a fresh and fruity red wine, a colourful and classic Beaujolais with a hint of spice and a juicy edge. ◆

NYETIMBER CLASSIC CUVEE £31.95 A popular sparkling wine from Kent, it exhibits aromas of toasty, almond and honey notes and baked apple and spice on the palate. Perfect served chilled as an aperitif, but it's also good with lighter starters with shellfish or poultry. ◆

Supper Club

SUPERSTARS Laura Jackson and Alice Levine’s cookbook offers advice and recipes from their supper club. Absolutely steals their secrets... Interview Hannah Hopkins

HANNAH HOPKINS: How did you meet and start your supper clubs? JACKSON & LEVINE: We met at a jumble sale that our friend Gemma Cairney was running for Oxfam, she asked us each to run a stall. We kept finding things we thought the other would like - there were some dungarees and a cat blouse if memory serves us right. We started chatting about food on our break and decided to meet up and have lunch. We then cooked up the idea of starting a supper club. HH: What’s the ethos behind your cookbook Round to Ours? J&L: We have been running supper clubs together for four years. Along the way we have learnt loads of great little cheats for cooking for big numbers, and setting the mood when people come over - so we thought we would get them all down in one place. It’s part cookbook, part interiors book, part directory for great finds. We want people to turn to it in times of entertaining need!

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

Chis_June17_JACKSON & LEVINE.indd 72

HH: How did you decide which recipes would go in the book? J&L: We wanted the book to inspire people to get their friends over - so that meant everything had to be impressive but easy to put together. The book is full of menus that we have cooked for loved ones, that have gone down well. Great all-rounders, that can become part of your repertoire. HH: What’s your favourite aspect of having people over for dinner? J&L: We love having a busy, bustling kitchen table, with all our favourite people around it, the more the merrier. The best dinners start early and end late - everyone staying well into the night is a good sign. Being at the heart of the action as the person making the food has always been a thrill for us both. HH: Which are some of your favourite go-to dishes for groups? J&L: A piece of slow-cooked meat is always an amazing crowd pleaser - think

lamb shoulder done low and slow. Serve with some dauphinoise which tastes even better if you prepare in the night before. Then just do some simple seasonal greens with lemon and black pepper. HH: Your supper clubs look so beautiful. What are your tips for throwing the perfect dinner party? J&L: If you are going to the trouble of cooking a lovely meal for friends, it’s worth putting that final bit of effort in to present it in a beautiful way. We are all about the small details - some lovely

plants or flowers for the table (we get inspiration on Instagram from our florist friends @wormlondon). Pick up some large sharing platters and plates in the charity shop so you can serve some dishes banquet-style in the middle of the table and take time to think about the lighting - it makes such a difference.

FOOD & DRINK / Q & A HH: There’s a real new tribe of young, stylish female foodies out there right now. How do you stand out from the crowd? J&L: We are friends with loads of the female foodies. We saw Anna Jones today and Rosie Birkett is a great pal who we always call up for great ideas and dog walks on the Marshes. We all get together for lunches and dinners. Elly Pear comes over to visit from Bristol, Clare Lattin from Duck Soup and Claire Ptak from Violet’s bring a dish too. We also host the Young British Foodie Awards because Lily Vanilli is a friend of ours. So for us it’s not about standing out from the crowd it’s trying to be an even bigger part of it.

- it’s a very simple recipe; gin, prosecco, elderflower cordial and a slice of cucumber or grapefruit. It’s definitely an ice breaker. HH: What would be on your playlist? J&L: We always play tracks on the record player and encourage guests to pick up a classic in the charity shop that they can put on. Northern Soul seem to go down well so we raid Jon [Laura’s boyfriend’s] collection. HH: How does your dynamic together work in the kitchen? J&L: Laura is a Tasmanian devil - so much energy and a mean list maker. Alice likes the washing up! So in many ways a perfect combination.

For US it's not about STANDING OUT from the CROWD, it's being a BIGGER PART of it

HH: As broadcasters you’re both used to interviewing celebrities – who is the best person you’ve interviewed? LAURA JACKSON: Snoop Dog, he wouldn’t stop talking about the Queen. ALICE LEVINE: I played Hungry Hippos with Quentin Tarantino, he’d never heard of it so took it home with him. HH: What do you do to unwind? J&L: Cook! Seriously we find a leisurely stint in the kitchen with the radio on to be a lovely way to de-stress. Either that or watching rubbish TV. HH: Finally, where are your favourite places to eat in London? LJ: Morito - the Exmouth Market tapas bar and restaurant has always been a favourite, as is Rochelle Canteen - hidden in a garden, behind the wall of a Victorian school. AL: Duck Soup is ideal for a chilled, midweek dinner. Padella - we have always loved Tim’s restaurant Trullo, so when they opened this little sister pasta joint, we were over the moon. Try the pici, it’s phenomenal. And also Campania & Jones. We have both lived in the East End for many years, and we still love a trip to Columbia Road. Summer nights on that patch of cobbles is divine. ◆

A FREE BRUNCH? Over the years we have seen many types of restaurant promotions in these pages. However, Rob Kelly, founder of Tried & True Cafe, really stands out from the crowd

AMAZING OFFER

If you would like to receive a voucher for a free meal at Tried & True Café, and enter the draw simply log on to triedandtruecafe.co.uk/freemeal and enter your address details there. Or if you prefer, call 020 3189 1279 (24 hours) and leave your name and address details. There are no strings attached. This is not a 2 for 1 or buy one get one free. Simply ONE FREE MEAL.

Rob has been giving away hundreds of free meals to residents in Putney, East Sheen, Roehampton and Barnes since 2012. His goal is to give every household in the local area one free meal. What’s even more amazing is that he hasn’t put any restrictions on who can get one, only that you must live in one of these neighbourhoods. He has limited the offer to one free meal per household. Groups, of course, are excluded.

BREAKFAST, BRUNCH & LUNCH

QUALITY AND SERVICE According to Rob, “if Putney’s local, independent, family owned businesses are going to compete against the deep pockets of chain restaurants, we can’t pull any punches. I believe the independents will always have an advantage when it comes to quality and service. We offer a unique, personal experience and really care about the quality of our food and drink and the service that our guests enjoy.”

Tried & True is a fully licensed café featuring all day brunch and lunch all made from scratch in their own kitchen with high quality ingredients sourced from local artisan suppliers. Their organic eggs are from Rookery Farm in West Sussex. Chorizo and cheeses are sourced from Brindisa at Borough Market. They also serve delicious coffee made with beans from Square Mile Coffee Roasters in Bethnal Green. Delicious, creamy non-homogenised milk for their smooth flat whites and cappuccinos is sourced from happy herds at Northiam Dairies in Kent.

TOP LONDON BRUNCH Where Tried & True really shines is brunch. Their most popular dish is The BBQ Pulled Pork Benedict but epic pancakes, mushrooms on toast, delicious scrambles and chorizo and potato skillet hash compete for

ur stomachs grumble for breakfast as we cross the threshold of awardwinning cafe Tried&True. Having established itself as a destination for Londoners on both sides of the river: there is some serious hype for the place to live up to. Inside, the atmosphere is inviting - a feeling compounded by the presence of owner Rob Kelly, who gives the space a personable feel on a chilly morning. The team at Tried&True are morning people. This is evident in their extensive

‘all day’ breakfast menu that includes brunch offerings you would struggle to find elsewhere. Their award-winning pulled pork benedict is one such dish - made of slow roasted pork shoulder infused with hickory hoisin sauce and served with homemade cornbread and chilli poached eggs. What makes Tried&True stand out is its willingness to go beyond the eggs and smashed avocado status quo, instead choosing to combine their eggs with cheeses, smoked meats and even beef brisket. This Putney cafe may feel wonderfully laid back-but its approach

79 SW_June17_FOOD REVIEW.indd 79

to producing innovative brunch combos is anything but. On Rob’s recommendation we order the Buttermilk Pancakes. Served with a thick berry compote, a dollop of mascarpone, and a satisfyingly viscous syrup. The side of treacle infused back bacon balances out the meat’s saltiness beautifully. And like all the animal products served at Tried&True, they’re sourced from first rate local butchers. The pancakes’ fluffy texture, accompanied by a flat white that would please the most demanding coffee snobs, makes our breakfast a life affirming start to the day. Tried&True are doing their bit to reverse the disappointment we feel when faced with repetitive breakfast menus. Whether you’re a freelancer looking for an eat/work space, a local mum in need of a caffeine fix, or are after the ultimate Sunday brunch with friends - Tried&True does more than just fill your belly. ◆ T R I E D &T R U E

ISLE of PLENTY

From mountain climbs to rainforest adventures, Saint Lucia offers action as well as laid-back luxury W o r d s E ly s i a A g n e w

he Caribbean is best known for its turquoise waters, golden sands and its swooping palm trees – it's a place where you can kick off your flip-flops and relax under the striking sunlight. Unwinding in a sand-between-the-toes beach bar with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other might be the epitome of pure bliss for some, but for others, a wellness holiday or an actionpacked, sight-seeing trip might be more appealing. Like me, you might be surprised to discover that Saint Lucia has the perfect combination of laid-back luxury and adventure. This exotic isle caters to all, accommodating everything from beach breaks and foodie feasts to rainforest adventures and mountain climbing expeditions. There’s much more to this Caribbean island - it might be a magnet for honeymooners, but it

also deserves its newfound status as an all-rounder for adventure seekers and gastronomic diners. At the northern tip of the island, where the Caribbean meets the Atlantic, is Cap Maison - an intimate boutique hotel located minutes from the nightlife, dining and shopping of Rodney Bay. This five star boutique hotel offers an experience steeped in luxury where authentic Saint Lucian culture, cuisine and traditions blend effortlessly. Set atop the grounds of a former sugar plantation, this waterfront resort invites guests to enjoy stunning views over Martinique. There are stunning, Spanish-Caribbeanstyle suites and villas scattered across the grounds; surrounded by beautiful wildlife, greenery and a selection of both private and communal pools. Villas range from one to three bedrooms and come with an open-plan living area, veranda and pool with a view of either the crystal waters over the cliff or the lush, tropical

gardens. Inside, I find perfection at every touch point: from the intricate, exotically coloured tiles and the Acqua di Parma toiletries in the bathroom, to the beach flip-flops and the hotel’s house rum punch provided in the suites. Cap Maison has three main restaurants under its umbrella, headed up by Craig Jones, a dreadlocked Welshman, because that’s just how things roll in the Caribbean. Cap Maison is a culinary journey in itself, with award-winning eateries and bespoke dining options. The most popular and possibly the most romantic table on the island is Rock Maison, an exclusive wooden deck lapped by the gentle waves of the Caribbean Ocean. Dine by candlelight as the burnt orange hues of the sun set around you. We enjoy tapas Creole style, available once a week in the hotel’s signature restaurant, The Cliff at Cap. Rock Maison shares its menu with The Cliff at Cap, but comes with a personal waiter and champagne zip wire, bringing the hotel’s speciality sparkly offering straight to your table. Afternoons can be spent swimming, snorkelling, sailing or relaxing on the hotel’s private beach. My happy place is found sipping rum punch in a clifftop hammock as the sea crashes against the rocks and the smells of the beach grill breeze by. Laid-back lunch is served at The Naked Fisherman, a beachfront grill where you can have the catch of the day. And as good food and wine tastes better when shared, we book up an evening in the majestic Cellar Maison (the island’s best kept secret), for wine and deli pairing. The hotel’s sommelier takes us from Bordeaux to South Africa, California and back, sampling a collection of biodynamic and vintage wines and innovative flavours. The wines are

I find PERFECTION at every POINT, from the TILES to the TOILETRIES playfully paired with an array of cold cut meats, charcuterie and artisanal cheeses. Reflective of the laid-back, Caribbean culture, if you’re here for a relaxing beach break you don’t have to lift a finger. Sitting by the pool, I’m greeted with a drinks menu and hamper filled with ice cold water, snacks and chilled towels to refresh. It’s these small touches that make Cap Maison such a unique retreat. But it’s not just about luxury here - it’s about personality too. It’s about the staff getting to know their guests, providing a professional and personalised service. If you’ve had your fix of lazy days, Saint Lucia has a wild side too. There’s plenty of island to explore, so why not make the most of it. Julian Toussaint, the hotel’s Head Therapist offers yoga classes,

running clubs and trail runs around Pigeon Island and along the untouched east coast. The island’s climate means that the mountains are covered with lush greenery, perfect for picture-postcard trekking. A ziplining experience at Rainforest Adventure is another must for adrenaline seekers. Hanging hundreds of metres above ground, you’ll fly through the incredibly peaceful and truly exotic rainforest. If you fancy a day trip, book onto the Mount Pimard Segway Tour, LucianStyle. You’ll glide the historical nature trail, enjoying breathtaking views and scenic stop-offs along the way. Seeing the west coast in a new light, we stop off at Pebble Beach, the Morne Pimant viewing point and the StoneFace Fish Pond. Saint Lucia has a fascinating cultural heritage: “no pressure, no problem” is the motto picked up by locals. To experience true Saint Lucian living and to enjoy a bit of out-of-resort evening entertainment, head to the Friday night Fish Fry in Gros Islet. We soak up the atmosphere as locals mix with tourists and this bustling street party comes to life. Whether ziplining through the rainforest, browsing the local markets or soaking up the sun by your rooftop pool, Cap Maison is the most exclusive, truly divine Saint Lucian destination that will tick all the boxes for a relaxing, romantic or rejuvenating adventure holiday. A breathtaking location, fine food and the perfect blend of tranquility and adventure. Every guest is a friend here, and you’ll leave feeling truly spoilt. With paradise coves, glittering beaches and idyllic hideaways, there are very few places more beautiful and thrilling than Saint Lucia. ◆

TRAVEL / UK GETAWAY THE HOUSE

ormerly the home of Lord Beaverbrook, owner of the Daily Express, Beaverbrook House has a visitor’s book that reads like a Who’s Who of the 20th century. It was a place for entertaining, and Winston Churchill was a regular guest. The beautiful building is surrounded by spectacular landscaped grounds, complete with a folly, and a vast new spa is set to open this summer when the main hotel is unveiled. Just 19 miles from Piccadilly Circus, this is as close to home as a country weekend gets. F

FOR FAMILIES

ot many hotels can offer up Sharky and George to entertain their guests’ children, but Beaverbrook has an entire hidden encampment in the woods headed up by the duo behind all the kids parties that count. At 10am on a drizzly Sunday morning our children are greeted by two enthusiastic faces, instructed to don raincoats and wellies, and whisked away to the treehouse, returning fed and happy several hours later. Which gives parents the ultimate luxury: several hours of quiet and the Sunday papers. Genius. N

THE FOOD

his is a foodie spot and has its own cookery school as well as a vegetable garden and a kitchen with grand plans. The dining room is pure joy: flooded with sunlight, everything is in stylish shades of sage. Food is fresh, healthy and creative – and the restaurant attracts non-residents from all around. T

amily Racedays at Ascot are an excellent way to introduce little ones to gambling. They're not actually allowed to place bets, of course, but as long as you hand over the actual cash, children will all be keen to put a pound on the horse with the best name and hope for the best. And when they're bored of the racing, highlights of family racedays include visits from TV entertainers, a teddy bear’s picnic at the Summer Mile Racing Weekend, a fireworks display in November and a host of festive delights at the Christmas Racing Weekend. The Summer Mile Racing Weekend’s dedicated family day is on Saturday 15 July, when there will be fairground rides and lots of activities, with a relaxed dress code and free entry for children. ◆ ascot.co.uk

The first global medical conference for pre-university students. WHO IS IT FOR?

Anyone aged 15 and above who is interested in pursuing a career in medicine. Parents and guardians can also attend and take part in dropin sessions to find out more about medicine as a career path.

H OW I S T H E E V E N T A N Y DIFFERENT?

It is not simply an application preparation event. It will give students the chance to hear about the latest advances in global medicine and pull on a pair of plastic gloves, roll up their sleeves and learn to stitch up a wound.

WHAT WILL THE PROGRA MME BE ?

It is full-day event designed to offer students a taste of the global conferences doctors and medical staff attend every year as part of their professional development. Students will hear from eminent speakers on the advances in technology and medicine that are changing the way doctors treat patients worldwide. They will also have the opportunity to experience immersive ‘Be a Doctor for a Day’ workshops, practising skills in a variety of staged environments such as medical stitching in A&E, bedside manner workshops on the ward round, or check-ups at the GP’s office. There will also be workshops to help with personal statements and BMAT/UKCAT entrance tests. And there will be the chance to meet top medical schools and work experience providers.

The property at 33 Eccleston Square in Pimlico near Victoria train station was lived in for four years from 1909 by the then business minister Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine. Their first two children Diana and Randolph were born at the flat. And while Churchill and his family lived here his career took off, including the post of First Lord of the Admiralty. It also believed that many of the government policies attributed to Churchill during his first stint in government were drafted at the property. It has four bedrooms, 4,000 sq ft of space, three reception rooms, a roof terrace, several bathrooms and a steam spa and is available through Savills (0203 430 6872).

nyone with a literary bent and a love of steam railways will remember the Royal Mail’s GPO Film Unit, which made documentaries about the postal service during the 1950s and 1960s. Its most famous film was Night Mail about the workers who used to sort mail on board the night trains that, until 2014, made their way from London to Aberdeen. Night Mail was edited at the GPO Film Unit’s headquarters in Blackheath, South London, within a development of commercial units where the unit operated from 1934 to 1943. Most of the properties there have been converted to residential use, including No.43 where the GPO film makers worked. Hampste ad Manor by N I G E L L E W I S

Hampstead’s hall on the hill is reborn, offering new luxurious homes with rich links to the past

T

he UK’s once gilded country manors and suburban mansions, funded by the riches of empire and trade from the 17th century onwards, have had a rough old time of it since the nation’s economic fortunes began to wane after the First World War. It’s a story told eloquently in TV’s Downton Abbey. But a much more extreme version of the ‘adapt or die’ approach to survival is to

be found in the Childs Hill area of Hampstead. Perched 250-feet above sea level from where it peers out over North London, Kidderpore Hall has endured a multitude of uses since it was completed in 1843 for leather magnate John Teil. He made his fortune in the fetid tanneries of Kidderpore on the outskirts of Calcutta in Bengal, and poured much of his wealth into building a Greek revival mansion here featuring elegant colonnades, side pediments and a grand semicircular bay.

“Kidderpore Hall has endured a multitude of uses since it was completed in 1843 for leather magnate John Teil” At the time, the area was largely rural and as well as a house, Teil enclosed local land to create a private park to surround his home and even kept ‘groomed’ sheep on his front lawn, somewhat Marie Antoinette-like. But as the years passed the area slowly became more suburban with new houses, lodges and roads added. In 1857 Teil died and the property, which from 1870 to 1878 was owned by dye merchant Charles Cannon, began to deteriorate. But then a new calling beckoned; to be the home for an educational world-first.

PROPERTY / DEVELOPMENT “Hampstead Manor as the developer has re-christened it, remains riddled with architectural clues to its past”

The hall and its land was bought and converted into a pioneering college for women to study botany, which at the time was one of few scientific disciplines women could enter. Westfield College had a wellconnected and wealthy set of supporters to get it going including the then monarch’s wife, Queen Mary, but also several progressive and wealthy women including Ann Dudin Brown, Constance Maynard and Mary Petrie. When it opened in 1882, it was one of the only higher education institutions for women in

England, and one of the first where they could gain degrees. The college went co-ed in 1964 and carried on until 1989 when it became an outpost of Kings College, later being turned into halls of residence. Its latest reincarnation is now well under way. The site was bought by developer Mount Anvil in 2014 and is being redeveloped into private homes. Kidderpore Hall, or Hampstead Manor as the developer has re-christened it, remains riddled with architectural clues to its past. Despite the army of builders

119 Chis_June17_HAMPSTEAD MANOR.indd 119

clomping their way all over of the site and the sound of hammer drills and pile drivers, the grandeur of Kidderpore Hall is still there to seen. Double-height ceilings, 8ft-tall doorways, and a swirling hard-wood hand-railed staircase that rises up to a glass roof light – which Mount Anvil is refurbishing – hint at the huge wealth that Teil amassed, even if many of the hall’s walls now have gaping holes in them. If there is an interested buyer, Mount Anvil would consider selling the Grade II listed Kidderpore Hall, one of the few remaining Georgian manors left in London, as one exceptional home. Otherwise, it will be transformed into two duplex apartments. But the educational additions to the site – which include an extraordinary galleried library for the female students, a number of Grade II buildings added at different times during the college’s history – are all to be turned into 125 luxury flats and townhouses, while the old chapel is to become a fourbedroom home, overall there are five Grade II listed buildings within the development. Two new modern buildings are also being constructed on the site, plus seven townhouses as well as an underground car park, and landscaped gardens. Let’s hope the millions being poured into the site’s refurbishment and conversion secure its future for another 174 years. ◆

Prices at Hampstead Manor start at £755,000 for a one-bedroom apartment and rise to £3.5 million for the townhouses. More information visit mountanvil.com or call 020 7776 5730

R o om s to m ov e

The number of people living in a home within London has increased from two in 1931 to 3.5 at the last Census in 2011. It is projected to increase to 3.7 by 2021 and 4.2 by 2031. There are currently 3.3 million homes in London, up from 2.5 million in 1981. 4

R enta l r evo lut i o n

The number of people renting privately in London overtook those living in social rented homes in late 2010, the same year the number of privately owned homes dipped under 50% of all households. A quarter of all

S ub ur ba n dr e a m

The top pick of Justin Marking, head of residential at Savills, for 2017 is the suburban restoration project, which he says is where you can “add value and take advantage of the differentiation between London and the country, which still exists”. 7

f there’s one thing about the London property market that is a constant, it’s the superlatives that most of use to describe it. Extraordinary, outrageous, most expensive, smallest, fastestrising, largest, most famous, highest priced. I could go on. The capital has achieved them all – and that’s just over the past year. Here’s our guide to some surprising and of course amazing facts about the city’s property market.

P r i c e to pay

All prime property in London is currently dropping in value, research by Savills has revealed this month. Its report on the market shows that prime central homes have reduced by 6.9% compared to a year ago, while prime NW London is down 3.2% and prime SW 4.4%. The area with the smallest reductions year on year is prime West London.

R e n ts i n r ev e rs e

The prime rental market in London has been sliding for a while now particularly in the £1,000 to £1,500 a week market where rents have fallen by 7.6% year on year, according to Knight Frank. 8

P os h pa d

The priciest property on the market at the moment is a five-bedroom apartment for sale within One Hyde Park, the Candy & Candy confection just over from Harrods. It has five bathrooms, three reception rooms and a huge set of picture-windows offering views over Hyde Park. Got the cash? Call Knight Frank on 020 7591 8600.

Londoners move 4.6 miles on average, well under the national average of 6.6 miles and the shortest distance moved in the UK. Removals website Buzzmove.com crunched the numbers from among 51,000 house moves it’s organised since 2013. Home movers in the East of England move the furthers at 12 miles, followed by Wales and the South of England. “This data shows that the myth that people don’t travel far when they move is just that – a myth,” said Damien Seaman, Head of Brand at buzzmove.com. “People move for a wide variety of reasons, but this data shows that people are clearly willing to relocate quite far away according to their circumstances.” 2

London’s a cr ow d

If you think London is too crowded then remember that the city only recently surpassed its 1939, pre-war total of 8.62 million. Older residents will remember when, during the decades after the war, much of central and inner central London was a ghost town in the evenings and weekends and only started to fill out again during the 1980s.
