Absolutely Weddings WELCOME

Editor’s

LETTER We have, we must confess, gone a bit crazy for castles in this issue of Absolutely Weddings

I

t started with our album of nine fantastic real weddings at moated and turreted venues across the UK and Ireland (page 14). Then we simply had to share with you Natalie and Shibby’s perfect wedding at Hever Castle (page 146). And finally, we heard the amazing story of Marcy and Jim, who travelled all the way from Chicago to have their own Game of Thrones moment (page 162). Even if castles aren’t your style, there is plenty of inspiration on the right venue. We also have 21 pages of the hottest bridal trends, and advice from leading wedding experts. Our quite magical collection of luxury trips to inspire you includes a stay at two heavenly Sandals Resorts in St Lucia (page 130). We also have a wonderful interview with Suzanne Neville (page 30), an iconic British designer who is guaranteed to make any bride feel like a queen on her wedding day. There is so much to look forward to this season, including the launch of The Wedding Gallery, which promises to be one of London’s hottest bridal shopping destinations, featuring stellar names such as Sassi Holford and Bruce Russell. And, of course, we are eagerly anticipating the National Wedding Shows – essential events for anyone planning their own magical celebration. See more about locations and tickets on pages 94 and 108. We hope to catch up with you at the shows. In the meantime, happy wedding planning!

he 1990s marked a huge shift in bridal, but young homegrown talent could still shine, and Stephanie Allin was among a new crop of bold and brilliant names to emerge at the start of the decade, breathing new life into the British-designed-and-made industry. Born in Mumbles, Swansea, Stephanie Allin came from a family of professional dressmakers. Her mother and grandmother had taught her how to construct garments, and by the age of 12 she was making her own clothes. At school she was pretty disinterested in anything except drawing, especially fashion drawing. She says: “As I recall, that’s all I ever did.” Art school was a natural progression, and this was followed by a move to London to study at distinguished design college Ravensbourne, an experience Stephanie Allin describes as three years of “anguish”. But all ended well. Her diploma collection – which included a knockout ballgown – won her a first job in the fashion industry. This, in turn, gave her precious connections with the all-important London buyers, notably Tatters. Her first small bridal collection of 1991 did well, with two gowns doing exceptionally well at Harrods’ bridal room. By spring 1992, she was showing her eponymous label at Harrogate, the tradeshow for bridal.

Couture processes were always central to the Stephanie Allin design philosophy and orders were fulfilled at her workrooms and store in Newtown Road, Mumbles, which opened in 1994. She’s still there today – working alongside her husband and codirector Gerry Allin – and so are members of that original team. She says: “We are a really close-knit team, and all here because we all love the work we do.". Opportunities may have been a hallmark of the 1990s, but also required hard graft. Stephanie says: “Thinking of of it now, it doesn’t seem possible. But we were wholesaling from the beginning, and I had my first baby in our first year of business. From the moment that first collection was launched, really we’ve never stopped.” This 1994 Celeste design was part of Stephanie’s third collection and offered something very special – hand-made separates tailored to the modern bride that worked seamlessly as a wedding-day ensemble. Celeste consisted of a duchesse satin skirt with soft train that was paired with a Georgette fitted bodice. Flatteringly

“Here was something very special – handmade separates tailored to the modern bride” draped so that it sat off the shoulders and formed a low cowl neck, the bodice had exquisite appliqué, with each top taking about four days to make. While the reaction to this collection – and especially this design – was hugely positive, Stephanie says: “At the time I didn’t understand what I’d done and how different this was”. Today, bridal separates are hugely popular, but they have remained a strong feature of Stephanie Allin collections ever since that first two-piece was created. Celeste may be an archive treasure, but it’s a look that still has resonance over 20 years’ later; Stephanie thinks that’s the sure sign of a winning design. “From the start, I have always designed around the idea that a bride should look back at photos of her wedding dress 30 years down the line and still think it looks beautiful. True elegance – good design – will always stand the test of time.”

STEPHANIE ALLIN ~

Stephanie Allin was established in 1991 and all gowns in the bridal collection are designed and hand-made its Mumbles workrooms, in premises that also house the label’s original boutique. A second London store was opened at 17 Chiltern Street in London’s West End in 2008, and today the label is stocked across the UK and around the globe. Dream Maker Suzanne Neville has an international reputation for making women look and feel like stars. Absolutely Weddings meets a designer who says there’s a wedding dress to flatter all brides

S

Wo r d s

LIBBY NORMAN

uzanne Neville is, no doubt about it, a leading light of the British bridal industry. With a star reputation (and a star-studded clientele to match), she has been a go-to name since the early 1990s when she helped to define a new style for brides. The thing that everybody who’s worn Suzanne Neville will tell you is that it’s the superb construction and fit that makes the gowns so special. They make the wearer look and feel her very best self. While there is definitely something magical when the dresses go on, this requires both an understanding of the technical business of construction, and of the wearer. As Suzanne says: “A good wedding gown is all down to fit and quality of materials. It must flatter your shape and also work with your style”. Suzanne served her apprenticeship at London College of Fashion. She had known from the age of ten that designing clothes was what she wanted to do, left school at 16 and then threw herself into the

training. “LCF ran a really technical course in those days so you learned everything from scratch: how to sew a seam, construct a pocket, cut a pattern. It was the whole process of designing, right down to fashion illustration, and I loved it.” After a brief foray into high-street fashion, she decided she wanted to work with the best materials and processes and that meant wedding dresses. Business started cottage-industry style and grew organically. Suzanne made a few gowns for family and friends and then opened small premises in Harrow on the Hill, north-west London. Harrods and Liberty vied for Suzanne’s first small collection of bridal gowns and she chose Harrods. This was, she says, a great shop window although bridal was very different back then. “You had no Internet, no Pinterest, so brides tended to be fairly local. Of course, in the very early days, I was still making everything myself.” Over time, her reputation and business grew and now she has flagship stores in Knightsbridge, London and Wilmslow, Cheshire, as well as an enthusiastic network of UK and international stockists. Suzanne’s workrooms are still located in Harrow, the leafy suburb where it all started out, although

these days they are set over several floors in historic buildings on the Hill, close to Harrow School. Suzanne has views down to the city from her top-floor studio and her team make everything in the workrooms, under her watchful eye. This close-knit way of working is all-important, and she credits it with the label’s success. “It’s about having the right skills, the right people. We have a team of 25-30 really skilled people working together in the studio, where I’m also based most of the time. Many have been trained from scratch here, as we have very specific ways of doing things. A lot of them have been with us for over 20 years now.” The process of making a dress is painstaking. As Suzanne puts it: “We do things by hand – we are old school”. Each dress is made individually, from start to finish, by one team member and always on a mannequin. Suzanne says that moulding and steaming on a 3D form is the only way to ensure the gown will fit properly on a real person. Fabrics are cut by hand, with scissors, the time-honoured way and embroidery is also by hand. Selecting fabrics is a major and crucial part of forward planning and takes an immense amount of time. They work mainly with Italian and French suppliers these days, and the majority of the laces and many unusual silks chosen for collections are exclusive to Suzanne Neville. Evening and occasion wear is another part of the workroom’s activities and there are many clients from the worlds of entertainment,

“Fabrics are cut by hand, with scissors, the timehonoured way. There are no shortcuts to the process of perfect fit”

SUZANNE'S GOWNS ARE CONSTRUCTED TO FIT AND FLATTER FEMALE CURVES

including stage and opera singers. As far as Suzanne is concerned, this is professional workwear and it has to be built with the same precision and attention to detail as any wedding gown. “Gowns have to earn their keep. I was delighted to spot Katherine Jenkins on a show not so long ago wearing something I’d made for her more than a decade earlier – it looked just as fabulous.” The team also dress clients for milestone events, including black tie parties and, of course, weddings. This side of the business is kept small-scale and bespoke, with clients visiting either London or Cheshire stores for consultations. Suzanne remains close to her brides, in order to understand their style and wishes for their wedding dress. Those who buy at her Knightsbridge store invariably meet her at the ABSOLUTELY-WEDDINGS.CO.UK

I’m convinced there’s a gown here for every bride.” first toile fitting and she says she loves understanding who they are and what will flatter them. “It’s all part of the personal service here, but I love it; I don’t know what I’d do without my Saturdays in Knightsbridge. Knowing the bride also means I can keep an eye on the dress, relate it back to her and ensure all the details are just right.” She also relishes designer days with stockists, travelling widely in the UK, Europe and as far afield as the US and Japan in order to meet the women who have chosen, or who are thinking of choosing, a Suzanne Neville gown. “Designer days are so useful because you get an insight into both individual customers and trends in the countries and regions. For instance, my Irish brides just love clean lines and crepe, and in France and Italy lace is so important. Meeting brides helps me understand their take and what they want from a dress.” Suzanne is also passionate about dressing brides of all shapes and sizes. She says: “We pride ourselves on designing for all shapes and sizes. I personally love designing for curvy women and one of the great things these days is that most brides are far more confident about their figures. But for brides who are, say, a size 18, the experience of having a gown that actually fits and shows off their figures beautifully, rather than just hanging, is often a revelation.” For this bridal collection, Suzanne has taken inspiration from brides in the many markets she visits. “I wanted to create a fusion of the whole world of bridal that I see – from traditional to modern – I’m convinced there’s a gown here for every bride.” She and her team also broke with tradition and chose

to shoot this season's collection in black and white. “We wanted to really show off the gowns without any background distraction. We just want people to focus on the dress.” With the sculptural and revealing lens of blackand-white, the new collection really does shine out, showing the “whole world” of Suzanne Neville’s keen eye for cut, fashion-forward details and shapes that flatter real brides of every variety. Already, Suzanne is sitting in her Harrow studio with bird’s eye view over London plotting the course of 2019’s collection. She says: “I never panic about the design process. I trust my own instinct and think of the brides I’ve met. But you do have to take a few risks in this business. A couple of seasons ago, I included what I thought was a fairly wacky dress. I wasn’t certain other people would respond as I did, and then thought ‘I love it, surely someone else will’.” And, as it turned out, Suzanne Neville’s unerring instinct for what real brides of all shapes and personal styles actually want to wear was spot on – that “wacky” dress sold really well.

Bridal Trends 2018 STYLES

Key trends in

2018

TEXTURE: SAVANNAH MILLER

Clare Thompson of The Wedding Club picks out key trends for 2018 in bridalwear in new-season designer collections

BALLGOWN SHAPES

“The ballgown shape is a strong element in many 2018 bridal collections,” says Clare Thompson. It's a timeless look, but for the season ahead you’ll find contemporary takes in collections such Carolina Herrera, who has included full-skirted gowns with sculpted off-the-shoulder detailing, oversized bows and lavish trains. Zuhair Murad features slimline gowns with matching coats and overskirts to give you the option of a full ballgown entrance and slimline gown for after-party.

BOHO TWISTS

Romantic styles always feature, but in the season to come more designers are including modern-boho twists, from willowy sleeves to fine French laces and bold textural combinations. Past masters of romantic dressing, such as Temperley London, Costarellos and Marco & Maria, have really interesting textures on soft and empire-line silhouettes to make this whimsical look feel contemporary.

TEXTURE STORY SHEER FABRICS: COSTARELLOS

BOHO TWISTS: TEMPERLEY LONDON INCLUDES WILLOWY SLEEVES

Unusual burnout – and almost découpageeffect patterns – are adding interest to skirts, sleeves and bodices. Clare says: “Look out too for clever uses of sheer fabric, often in combination with strong textures.” This is seen to striking effect with designers such as Costarellos and Zuhair Murad. You will also find lots of sparkling embellishments, astral motifs and feathers, with labels such as Savannah Miller and Houghton NYC embracing this trend in their collections.

BALLGOWNS: CAROLINA HERRERA

CORSETS: A STANDOUT BERTA GOWN WITH PLUNGE BODICE

CORSETSAND SPLITS

A complete contrast to the new boho look is the underwear-as-outerwear trend, focused around corset effect bodices. Splits and cutout details are also strong stories – whether it’s a split-front plunge bodice, cutout on the back or midriff of the gown or thigh-high split skirt. The new Berta collection features lots of sexy pieces, including a high-glamour sculpted bodice cut to create a bustier effect and paired with a form-fitting skirt with mermaid kick pleat. This collection also features a standout off-the-shoulder gown with plunge bodice, cutout back and long fitted sleeves.

BLUE NOTES Something blue has always been a classic for brides, but this season there are endless ways to add sky, duck egg or royal hues to your look lue makes a perfect foil to whites and ivories, and has rich associations with bridal folklore – traditionally it was said to signal prosperity and fertility. But this season designers are bringing nature into their collections, and sky, floral and lapis hues are all over the catwalks. Whether you hint at it with accessories, or go for broke with an aqua, lavender, cornflower or jewel gown, we think it’s a great way to celebrate your style in the most time-honoured way.

A classic ballgown shape in a delicious pale aqua blue, this design by Justin Alexander is a showstopper for a grand wedding. justinalexander.com

Jewellery REMODELLING RING S

C

hoosing engagement and wedding rings can be one of the toughest decisions, especially since the whole business of the four Cs (colour, clarity, carat and cut) may make what should be a heart-led decision feel like a complex process of finding the right stone at the right price. Richard Warrender of W&W Jewellery certainly believes it’s the character and history of old pieces – as opposed to market value – that inspires some couples to visit their studio to commission something fresh and original from an heirloom. “I have the greatest respect for the four Cs when it comes to new gemstones, but vintage stones are often so interesting, so characterful. And, of course, each piece of old jewellery has its own story.” Little wonder then, that more and more couples are turning to a bespoke approach, and incorporating inherited pieces that already have family history and sentiment attached. Laurie McGrath, senior designer at bespoke jewellery specialists Harriet Kelsall, says this is often how the story of designing an engagement ring starts. The heirloom to be remodelled may be a

ring that has outlived its wearability or doesn’t feel quite right on someone else’s finger, but she adds that there are a variety of other pieces that may be the starting point for a new piece. Sometimes it’s an old brooch or it may be a variety of different pieces that have been languishing in a drawer or jewellery box but deserve to be worn and enjoyed. With so much sentimental value behind them, old pieces can be cleverly redesigned to be wearable and still retain something of the original. At Harriet Kelsall, they can even incorporate the old gold into new pieces. And if there are multiple smaller stones in an old brooch, ring or necklace these may be a great fit within a wedding band (jewelled wedding bands are becoming more and more popular among Harriet Kelsall clients). At W&W Jewellery, the team can source new stones that bring out the best in the old gem, or even find a vintage stone to work within the design. Richard Warrender says there are numerous ways to ensure that an old-cut stone looks beautiful

THE DESIGN PROCESS AT W&W INVOLVES SKETCHES AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

AN HEIRLOOM YELLOW GOLD RING REMODELLED IN WHITE GOLD SETTING BY THE TEAM AT HARRIET KELSALL

“At Harriet Kelsall, they can even incorporate old gold into new pieces so you retain something of the original treasure treasure”

within a new and original piece. The team incorporate digital technology to design a bespoke setting that makes the very best of the character and cut of the jewels. Often, the process at Harriet Kelsall starts with a few photos being emailed across, and from there sketches and ideas are discussed before an appointment is made to take an expert look at the original piece and fine tune the design before disassembling the old jewellery and beginning a skilled remaking process. Occasionally there are nice surprises. One rather unusual inherited piece only revealed itself to be a yellow diamond once it was removed from the setting

that had obscured its true colour. With its history, relative rarity and captivating hue, it made a quite stunning engagement ring matched to two pure white diamonds. At both W&W Jewellery and Harriet Kelsall, the key thing about creating something fresh and original from heirlooms is the active involvement of the client. From the design of the setting to the sourcing of additional stones, this is a process of co-creation that ensures the piece feels precious and personal to the wearer. Perhaps that – more than anything else – explains the allure of a new piece from old treasure. As Laurie McGrath of Harriet Kelsall explains it: “Designing an engagement ring or wedding rings starting with an old piece always feels meaningful – a process of welcoming a new member to the family and starting a new chapter of the family story”.

2018 BEAUTY Bobbi Brown Pro & Artistry Manager Hannah Martin gives her take on key trends in bridal beauty for 2018 and tips on go-to products for achieving your look

DEWY, GLOWING SKIN. LOOK BY BOBBI BROWN. PHOTO: MARCHESA BY @ISAIMAGES

I

t all starts with the base, and the two leading trends for bridal skin in 2018 are matte and dewy, glowing skin. Some brides want to replicate the picture-perfect foundation they see on Instagram and in magazines, while others prefer something more natural – a lightweight and ethereal look. Classic smoky eyes have seen a huge resurgence in recent years, but many brides prefer a look that defines the eyes without being too bold or ‘made up’. When it comes to lips, neutral or ‘lip’ tones will always be popular. Many brides know they need a little colour but don’t want to add too much or wear anything too bold if they don’t normally. However, a bold lip colour is very popular among brides getting married abroad who may have a tan and be looking to wear less base make-up.

84

I

REFINING YOUR LOOK

would always advise going to consult an artist for their recommendations. Bobbi Brown Cosmetics offer a complimentary ‘Bridal How To’ session where you can learn how to achieve the look you want for your wedding. Even if you're confident at make-up application, an artist may be able to help you create a more longwearing look or guide you how on to tweak your make-up for camera. I will always advise brides to try different looks, as sometimes the colours you like from a picture in a magazine may not work so well for you. Trial and error can really help here. If you are looking for a matte base then opt for make-up primers that aren’t too rich to avoid unwanted shine. I highly recommend Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base as an oil-free moisturiser that hydrates skin without leaving a greasy finish. Layer a little Skin

Smoothing Pore Perfector, then finish with either Skin Foundation Stick or the Long Wear Even Finish Foundation for medium to full coverage that will look more matte. Set with either the Pale Yellow Sheer Finish Pressed Powder or Retouching Loose Powders. For a more dewy finish, again hydrate the skin with the Vitamin Enriched Face Base but add a little Extra Illuminating Moisture Balm over the cheeks for beautiful luminosity. Then apply the Skin Foundation or Skin Foundation Stick but set with the Nude Finish Illuminating Powder to lock your base in place for the day while keeping the skin hydrated and creating a subtle glow. Pot Rouge and the much adored Shimmer Bricks can add to that ethereal glow. I love nothing more than a little Pale Pink Pot Rouge on the cheeks with a little Rose or Pink Quartz Shimmer brick on top.

Beauty BRIDAL MAKE-UP

For neutral lips, look for a lipstick that’s similar to your natural lip colour. I love Sandwash Pink and Blondie Pink but your choice will depend on your lip tone. For those looking for a pop of colour, again it totally depends on you and the look you want, but some of my favourite bridal looks have been created with Harlow Red Art Stick and Pink Guava Luxe Lip Colour.

K

BRIDAL SKINCARE

eeping your skin hydrated is essential to ensure a glow on your wedding day, but if drinking lots of water isn’t quite cutting it, then try layering the Skin Moisture Solution Remedy on clean skin before your skincare. It’s packed full of sodium hyaluronate to help bind moisture to your skin. I advise brides not to try anything for the first time just before their wedding in case their skin reacts badly. If you do have a break out or reaction to something, then try the Skin Relief Remedy. It will reduce redness and help soothe and calm skin. The Clarifier Remedy will help keep blemishes and blackheads at bay.

Here are five BOBBI BROWN products that Hannah recommends for brides

1

S

WEDDING ESSENTIALS

ome absolute essentials for the wedding day itself are the Skin Foundation Stick – amazing for touch ups even if you used a different formula for your base originally. Retouching Loose Powders not only set makeup beautifully, they also create an immaculate finish and help colour correct the skin, with White brightening, Yellow controlling high colour and Peach adding warmth. The Pink also looks divine on cheeks. Long-Wear Cream Shadows and Long-Wear Cream Shadow Sticks are incredible for wedding-day make-up as they dry waterproof and don’t smudge or crease. This means you can have total confidence that your eye make-up will stay in place for the entire day – even if you CHOOSE EYE MAKE-UP cry! Eyelash curlers THAT CAN STAND UP TO HUMIDITY AND EMOTION are also a must, as a little lift to the lashes before mascara creates a mischievous, more wide-eyed look and helps to create that coveted fan effect. Pair with Long-Wear Gel Liner or Long-Wear Waterproof Liner and No Smudge mascara and you’re good to go. If you don’t want to be touching up your lip colour, then I suggest filling in your entire lip first with lip pencil, then follow with a wash of Art Stick Liquid Lip. Blot the lip colour then reapply for even more durability. If (like me) you prefer a more moist and hydrated looking lip, then be sure to prep your lips with Lip Balm and keep one to hand throughout the day. * bobbibrown.co.uk

Beauty BRIDAL FITNESS

“With yoga, you have the power to change how you feel”

Stress BUSTER Carolyn Cowan of Triyoga says yoga can beat stress and transform your perspective

S

tress is a fact of life and we all experience moments where we’d like to stop the world and get off. But for brides and grooms, it can become a real problem in the run up to the wedding day when planning decisions collide with fulltime, full-on career. Even something small can trigger an emotional meltdown where we feel as if we are losing the plot. In fact, it usually is the small trigger points that overwhelm us. As Carolyn Cowan puts it: “It’s not the elephants that get you, it’s the mice”. She teaches Kundalini yoga at Triyoga’s Chelsea centre, combining this with her private practice as a therapist. She believes that yoga is a powerful antidote to stress, helping to alleviate its multiple symptoms through an effective combination of posture and controlled breathing. Carolyn says the side effects of stress are the real problem because the physical

manifestations – fear, anxiety – build up to the point where we can no longer function. She says: “Think about the last time you got really stressed. What happened was that you reverted to a child-like state – unable to even think things through rationally”. While we’ve all been there, or somewhere nearby, it’s worth knowing that the physical symptoms are caused by our body contracting due to anxiety. This in turn sets up a ribbon of effects via our central nervous system, including a tight throat and often feelings of tension or pain in our stomach, also shutting down our ability to think clearly. Long term, if unmanaged, stress can affect everything from our digestion to our skin and sleep patterns. At Carolyn’s Kundalini yoga classes, everyone is welcome. She dispels the notion that this is a class for the superfit, the beautifully co-ordinated or the impossibly limber. “I am an ordinary sized post-menopausal woman and we welcome all sorts of people – all sizes, all ages – it’s a gentle class”.

Using a combination of breathing techniques (pranayama), posture and meditation can have a powerful effect. Even the initial warm-up exercises work their magic. A combination of deep stretches to release core muscles, and deep breathing to open up and relax tension then help to release serotonin, endorphins and dopamine – the powerful trinity of feelgood chemicals capable of improving our mood and sense of overall wellbeing. Carolyn says that at the end of the warm up everyone is in neutral, rather than tense and stressed, and then they can enjoy and benefit from the rest of the yoga session. The proof of the success of this technique is in the number of attendees at these classes – lots of regulars ranging in age from eight to 86. Carolyn says: “I’ve had people come up to me after the class and tell me how good it felt, and that they didn’t know they could even feel that way”. While classes typically last 90 minutes, the takeaways are a series of stretches and breathing exercises that can be tried out at home or work if things are getting on top of you. Carolyn says: “Rather than wallpapering other people with our stress, we can manage it. Yoga helps release tension, and it’s wonderful to discover that you have the power to change how you feel".

Bridal beauty boost Tima Reshad of Coco Nail Bar explains what the CACI cosmetic treatment can do to help brides look and feel their beautiful best

CACI Synergy is like a workout for the face but without the sweat and pain of the gym. As a non-surgical alternative to botox and fillers, no wonder it is a longstanding favourite among many A-listers. Jennifer Lopez has been using CACI for years – in fact, she loved it so much she purchased a machine to use at home. The machine is also able to carry out microdermabrasion, a safe and controlled treatment that intensely exfoliates and resurfaces the skin.

CACI is suitable for sensitive skin. Skin may become slightly red for the first 48 hours but it will then pass. Microdermabrasion may be best avoided.

H OW LO N G D O TH E BENEFITS LAST? To get the best effect, it is best to have a course of treatments. After that, touch up CACI treatments once or twice a month are recommended to keep the results going.

t Coco Nail Bar, the team are very excited about the CACI system, offering a brilliant range of skincare solutions to brides and anyone looking to improve their skin tone and fight the signs of ageing. Tima Reshad explains how it works.

CACI stands for Computer-Aided Cosmetology Instrument and it works by using microcurrents to release tiny electrical impulses that mimic the body’s own electrical signals. As a result of a biological process, cellular metabolism is increased, along with protein synthesis, detoxification and the regeneration of collagen and elastin. CACI’s newest machine, the Synergy, combines microcurrent with S.P.E.D. LED technology for even more visible, longer-lasting results.

The wrinkle comb is great for more mature brides. It works to reduce fine lines and crows feet. We also offer reatments to target stretchmarks, specific blemishes, pigmentation and age spots. Our CACI lip treatment will leave lips looking plumper and more luscious (a 15-minute session costs £30). Q We’re considering having a celebrant-led service at our party. How does this work? A Celebrants are as different as the couples we work with. I’m an independent celebrant and my approach is to collaborate with the couple, explain the possibilities and help them to design a ceremony that fits their personalities. Although we cannot legally marry people, we help couples design a part of the day that has unique meaning. Some couples find that marriage services – especially at register offices – feel rather impersonal. As I point out to my clients, you wouldn’t ask the council to organise your birthday party! The other reason people choose a celebrant is simply to mark the moment. After all, it’s not often that all the people we love gather in one place just for us. I see myself as advocate for the couples, and a point of calm – helping them to remember what this is all about. Perhaps the biggest part of what I do is to help create a narrative structure – with poems or vows if they want them although some couples prefer the service to be very simple. However we design it, this marks a journey from being engaged to being two individuals who are also now a married couple. That should be an uplifting moment for everyone in the room.

a r t f u l l s p l o d g e r s .c o m Q We've got lots of young children at our wedding. What's your advice? A An organised crèche is a must if you have lots of children attending your wedding – I speak also as the mother of four children! Sometimes couples imagine that the smaller children will be looked after by the older ones or by their parents, but it doesn’t work that way at weddings. Many referrals to me are via venues, which see the guestlist and then insist that an organised crèche is the

only way to avoid disaster. Obviously they have a duty to consider their property (we work in many historic and listed venues). But more than that, they consider the risks to children if they aren’t being safely supervised. We carry all necessary insurances, are Ofsted registered and have a team of incredibly well-trained staff. We bring along fantastic equipment, from a Techno Zone for older children to crafts and quiet spaces for younger ones. We set up a safe, child-friendly space with a high ratio of staff to children. We've been organising wedding crèches for over 20 years and the most frequent comment from couples is that their wedding guests told them the crèche was the best thing about the party. Your guests will appreciate the chance to let their hair down and you will have a much better time knowing that young guests are safely supervised and having a great party too.

Q We're thinking of getting a toastmaster. Can you advise? A Toastmasters have very different styles of working and my advice is to get to know the person behind the red coat. You have to like and trust them, and be on the same wavelength, because they are playing a key role in an important event in your lives. There are two distinct parts to the role. The first is the ceremonial side – where the toastmaster will mark key events, such as introducing speeches – but that is the tip of the iceberg and most of my work goes on behind the scenes helping to keep things running smoothly. I meet the couple in advance to find out what they want. During our chat, I can give guidance on traditional ways of doing things and alternative options. There are no ‘right’ ways at weddings; it’s the couple’s day, so they decide how it should run. After our chat, I draw up a checklist that outlines what we’ve agreed. This also contains the information I need to contact other key parties – venue, caterer, car, and so forth – and share essential information. On the day, I’m typically there two hours before the event and only say my goodbyes once the partying is well underway and my help is no longer required. Toastmasters come from lots of different walks of life but we are used at a wide variety of public and private events. I was a police officer for 30 years in units such as Special Investigations, so I saw the darker side of life. Now I have the privilege to visit beautiful venues where I meet superb people who thank me for my help. In my former career, people didn’t say that very often!

Mirror Mirror Established in 1989 by Maria Yiannikaris and Jane Nicolls, Mirror Mirror is a London institution. Maria explains how they work

W

e started out in 1989. Both of us had trained at London College of Fashion, then worked in high fashion and luxury eveningwear, before we established Mirror Mirror. My mother was a couture designer – she dressed people like Ella Fitzgerald and I distinctly remember Twiggy having a hotpants fitting in our house when I was growing up! Jane’s godmother was a London couturier. Our own Mirror Mirror Couture label (pictured above) has been central since we started. Indeed, we began by only designing and selling our own gowns. We are always focused on flattering and impeccable cut. Dresses are made right here in our workrooms, and when we’re fitting we cut to the bride, so it’s always the best you. We don’t compromise on fabrics,

favouring silk, tulle, crepe, organza and French laces. The focus with our other designers is on leading international labels, including star couture names such as Nurit Hen (exclusive to us in London) and Gemy Maalouf. Our relationships with them means we have a lot of scope to make design changes via their ateliers, and of course our workroom here gives us the ability to ensure dresses are extremely well fitted. These days, there’s so much choice that it can be hard for brides to be decisive. My advice is to plan the dress no more than a year ahead of the wedding. Shortlist designers you like and then narrow down to three boutiques that stock one or more of your preferred labels. A lot of brides find it difficult to stop looking, but it really is far better to find a look that you love and then go for it.

ONE MARYLEBONE IS ONE OF LONDON’S COOLEST SPACES

I

t’s easy to forget how radical the idea of a ‘blank canvas’ venue seemed back in the Noughties when One Marylebone first opened its doors. London suddenly had a stunning building in a peerless W1 location that you could dress as creatively as you pleased for your private party. It was an instant hit, not only among the fashion crowd but also couples seeking star-quality from their wedding venue. Some ten years on, One Events work with brides and grooms from across the globe, helping them to design the party of a lifetime. One Marylebone was joined by One Belgravia in 2016. Located right next door to One Events’ HQ in Grosvenor Place, this former embassy building offers a series of grand rooms with high ceilings and fabulous fireplaces, all linked by a glorious marble staircase. Overseeing some of London’s most distinctive event spaces is, as Molly Hodges and Abi Moulds of the Private Events team will freely admit, a job as varied as each and every wedding they help bring about.

Meet ONE EVENTS The team behind One Marylebone and One Belgravia reveal the inside story of wedding organisation at two of the capital’s most distinctive venues

A lot of couples come to them via word of mouth or because they’ve attended a wedding or event here and seen the potential for their own celebration. These are venues that offer both dry hire and – the recommended option – project management. Molly says: “We offer project management for a flat fee, and have found that it’s a way to make the whole experience as stress-free as possible for couples, also offering them the reassurance of our expertise and knowhow. In common with all venues, we know what works in our spaces and our goal is to ensure that suppliers can deliver the right results. That is why we have a list of tried and trusted names we know and can recommend for their professionalism”.

ONE BELGRAVIA HAS GRAND INTERNAL SPACES AND A STUNNING STAIRCASE

“The great thing about our venues is that they can be transformed into pretty much anything you want them to be” Opting for a project management arrangement with venue hire means that the team work with a couple’s ideas, source and organise quotes and help with the cost management side of planning, also advising on the routes that best suit the couple’s vision and budget. It also includes onsite management and coordination on the wedding day itself. Of course, sometimes the team also work with wedding planners appointed by couples – a process that runs very smoothly. Molly says: “London is a global wedding destination and if there are extra logistics – for instance additional parties or guests flying in for the wedding – then having someone who is dedicated to the overall

organisation while we manage the venue specifics is a practical solution”. The team have noticed distinct shifts in wedding trends, be it the vogue for creative ‘tablescaping’ or the move towards ever more dramatic scene setting and entertainment. Both venues can host a crowd and have a variety of spaces to move couples effortlessly from ceremony to reception to after party. It helps that both venues have late licences and, in the case of One Marylebone, there’s a cool garden space that can be incorporated into the celebration by arrangement. While styles might change, couples always have the same desire for a perfect wedding day, and that’s something that the team at One Events keep front of mind. Molly says: “This is such an important day and every couple have a unique vision. We have so much experience and understanding of the journey from first plan to wedding day, so our focus is on ensuring their party lives up to the dream. And the great thing about our venues is that they can be transformed into pretty much anything you want them to be. That’s why they are such exciting spaces.”

Wedding Planner VIDEOS

Movie Gold These days, everyone can have an A-lister wedding movie and two experts in capturing the glamour of your day explain how it’s done

T

here was a time when the wedding video was a bit of an afterthought, and it showed. Cheesy, poorly edited and not always flattering bride and groom, it didn’t even begin to capture the magic. That changed with the advent of specialists who have kit and talent to make films you’ll want to replay again and again. Andrew Gemmell of The Filming Business, is one of the most sought-after in the UK, capturing the weddings of numerous A-listers over the past 25 years. He’s very clear about his role: “There is only one chance to get the filming right, so I focus on creating an heirloom that becomes part of your family history.” Andrew travels within the UK and internationally, filming some of the most glamorous weddings in the world. While he carries with him the most sophisticated kit, he prides himself on being unobtrusive. “We’re creative, but we don’t direct or interfere with the action. One of the best compliments I get is when couples say their guests didn’t know I was there." His kit includes time-lapse cameras, drones and sophisticated editing facilities that help him turn extensive footage from the day into something magical. He works with couples to ensure that he captures the details they want in there, although after 25 years he says he’s got an instinct. “I know where to be to capture the important things, the narrative and drama of the day.” For Heema Mandil of Pinch of Love Productions, drama and energy is central to the process. With a background in fashion filming – notably at Lakmi Fashion Week and with designers such as Sabyasachi –

of the wedding. “If it’s an intimate wedding, we need a different approach, and equipment. If it’s an Indian wedding it might be a three-day event and that takes a lot of careful planning.” Heema and Andrew both recommend that your wedding film is planned early – Heema suggests sitting down with the filmmaker around six months ahead of the day. She also says you need to consider the music. “It’s crucial to avoid royalty problems and we can advise couples on this. Music is central – a key way to ensure the film works seamlessly, tells the story of your day and can be shared with friends.”

“Heema Mandil says a wedding is dynamic – ‘it’s vital to bring out the emotion and the love’,” she brings the same flair to wedding films, using music and superb editing to bring out the drama and romance. Heema says: “We are a team effort and I work with colleagues in London, India, Croatia and many other locations". While fashion and lifestyle events remain an arm of the business, weddings are also a speciality. She says: “A wedding is dynamic and you must mark the important moments. One thing you must bring out is the emotion and the love – you are capturing someone else’s story”. Heema will sit down with the couple to discuss their wishlist for the day and also understand and plan around the structure

wedding at Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons is always going to be a wonderful celebration, and for this winter gathering the theme was classic and elegant. Nikki and the team at Wild at Heart worked with wedding planner Isobel Weddings, who had created a wonderful overall design for the day. Guests were welcomed into a light-filled marquee where the couple were married under a Nikki Tibbles bespoke floral arch. It was after the ceremony that the glorious floral dressings came into their own. Guests enjoyed a gourmet wedding breakfast in Raymond Blanc’s two-Michelinstarred Le Manoir restaurant. To match the surroundings and the food, Wild at Heart dressed the tables in a harmonious arrangement of crystal, candles and

gold. This created an intimate and warm atmosphere for the evening celebration. The stunning rose ball table centres featuring blush and cream blooms were created by elevating arrangements above the table on a Wild At Heart-designed stand. This clever design created the impression of flowers suspended in the air, a wonderful focal point for each table, especially as each one was under-lit by candles. Smaller arrangements using the same colour theme graced each table, and each guest’s place setting contained a single blush rose.

he one thing your gift list should never be is dull. Guests want to see objects on there that reflect the interests of you, the couple they know and love. This means you have every reason to let your heart rule your head and select things not purely because they are sensible or useful, but because you love them and would really like to share your lives with them. Rest assured that gift lists are revealing exactly this trend, with couples opting for items that a few years ago might have been considered, well, a tad indulgent. So where once a simple two-slice toaster might have sufficed, today it’s just as likely to be a Sage By Heston Blumenthal Smart Waffle Maker, that can deliver chocolate, Belgian, buttermilk or custom pancake delights at breakfast time – and what’s not to love about that? You will even find gifts that were never traditionally included on a guest list. The Wedding Shop offers cool matching bicycles, so you can pursue a new or existing hobby together, while Prezola includes the Kitvision Escape HD5 Action Camera (waterproof up to 30 metres) so you can record every crazy moment of your honeymoon travels.

Back on home turf, whether your passion is the perfect cocktail accessories to indulge your party host creativity (try Waterford Crystal’s Mixology glasses, from £100 for four at The Wedding Shop) or the kind of professional baking kit that Mary Berry would approve of, there’s a gift to satisfy your soul. Of course, some gifts are as useful as they are iconic – the KitchenAid mixer, for instance has a place in every couple’s kitchen. You can indulge your passion for music with cool Ruark Audio speakers that let you deliver great sound on your old record collection (£329.99 from Prezola). And Prezola even lets you add vinyl classics – from Bowie to Winehouse – to your gift list. Our personal indulgences would be those Waterford Crystal Mixology glasses and a Bugatti Diva Espresso Machine. Both are definitely at the indulgent end of kitchen kit, but could there be any finer gift than the perfect macchiato or mojito in the comfort of your own home?

f you spill red wine on your wedding dress, the second worst thing you can do is to pour white wine on it. The very worst is to rub salt into the stain – it's a fixative and is likely to set the stain forever. In fact, the advice from Bentley Garment Care is not to touch stains. The familyowned company has a glowing reputation among bridal designers and the theatre industry for being able to work miracles when it comes to restoring the finest garments. Director Claire Bedworth says: “We know that scheduling dry cleaning for your dress can seem another expense at an expensive time, but it can be save your dress. The quicker we get to a stain, the more likely it is we can remove it.” The team do everything by hand – also undertaking repairs on even the most delicate materials, including beading and lace. And wedding veils and satin shoes can also be restored. Dresses are returned boxed and in acid-free tissue paper and you can even arrange a pick-up for your dress from your venue or home via their wedding concierge service. bentleygarmentcare.com

petals – you can even create a ‘pick and mix’ to match your wedding colours. If you aren't already sold on the idea of flowers that support bees and wildlife before they shower you, then consider the fact that many venues prefer (or stipulate) petal confetti for the simple reason that it’s eco-friendly, looks lovely when it’s scattered and will naturally biodegrade or waft away in the breeze. At Shropshire Petals, throwing confetti costs from £12.25 a litre, and you’ll have hours of fun choosing your mix. shropshirepetals.com

erhaps it’s the nation’s love of all things baking related at the moment, but wedding cakes have never been so creative. From naked to handpainted to dripping with fruit and caramel, there is a cake to suit every palate. Among our favourite trends are the cake table, a creative arrangement where everyone chooses a slice, cupcake or cookie they love (try The Enchanting Cake Company). We also love a tiered cake that’s taken to the limit. Ann’s Designer Cakes (pictured left) has some beauties. And if you can’t see a cake you’d want to eat, our advice is to find someone to design your dream. We don’t know a wedding baker who doesn’t love a creative challenge. For great cake ideas, see page 103.

he Roof Gardens is a venue your guests will never forget. Built in the 1930s as a rooftop garden, it’s been the locale of legendary parties down the years, and joined Richard Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition collection because it was a space he loved. Beach heaven

Glorious beaches, fairytale Piton mountains and lush jungle scenery make St Lucia a perfect slice of Caribbean paradise, but this feels like heaven when you are a guest of the island’s Sandals Resorts Wo r d s

S

LIBBY NORMAN

t Lucia sits like a teardropshaped diamond in the Eastern Caribbean and, with its lofty twin Piton mountains, lush banana groves and French influences in culture and cuisine, it’s definitely within the paradiseon-earth part of our planet. Having visited once before – many moons ago and on the budget end of budget – the opportunity to revisit and stay at two luxurious Sandals Resorts is just too good to miss. We are whisked from arrivals hall to Sandals’ private lounge to freshen up, grab a cool drink and a snack. Our limo driver has thoughtfully placed a wicker hamper in the middle of the back seat containing ice-cold beer and more snacks. Cruising through the gates of Sandals Regency La Toc, just outside the capital Castries, there’s an instant sense of space, peace and the kind of haute gardening skills that could earn the team here a gold medal at Chelsea. Fruit punch and more tempting small eats at reception (patisserie this time), and then we are whisked by golf buggy back down the steep hill to our room. Room is the wrong word. What we have is our own private eyrie – officially it’s a LoveNest Butler Suite, and it does feel

rather as if we are floating like heavenly bodies somewhere above the earth. The first-floor living area leads out onto a large balcony screened by trees, making it utterly private. The tree branches are packed with tropical birds serenading us so lustily that we can only just hear the lazy lap of the waves below. Are these birds, I wonder briefly, trained to greet all guests like this? Downstairs, the lavish bedroom and bathroom suite extends out to another wooden deck with huge bathtub behind a screen, more loungers and steps down to the vast and seemingly deserted beach. With champagne, local rum and a bartender’s delight of spirits and mixers, we could easily spend the entire week never going out. Our butler rings the doorbell and shouts a cheery hallo. Having been raised on a little too much Jeeves and Wooster, I was worried we might not meet the required standards, but our first meeting with Sherman sets us straight. Not only is he resoundingly un-Jeeves-like, but also willing and able to secure us top-table seats at any of La Toc’s restaurants, as well as giving us the inside track on where to go and what to see. We are even given our own butler phone (we can’t help calling it the bat phone) and can call him anytime if we get lost, get bored, want breakfast in bed, dinner on the ABSOLUTELY-WEDDINGS.CO.UK   131

terrace or simply a sundowner on the beach and are too lazy to move. Sherman whisks us out on a butler tour, suggests a dining itinerary for the next few days and bids us goodbye with a reminder to call him: “anytime”. We are bowled over by the space here. There’s plenty of fun and company to be had at the poolside and swim-up bars, the fire pits or – our favourite – at the piano bar, but if you feel like being à deux you simply tuck yourself in one of the many secluded love seats, cabanas or hammocks. The next few days pass in a dream of tropical sunshine, VIP treatment Sherman style and excellent food. We take a brilliant sunset cruise with Island Routes, drinking heady rum cocktails while watching the sun go down. We dine at the resort’s signature restaurant La Toc, a superbly accomplished meal that reflects the island’s (and head chef’s) links with all things French. During the daytimes we enjoy the beach, the pool and our private eyrie above the waves. We know we could dive (Sandals offers unlimited diving), play any number of land or watersports or catch the shuttle to another Sandals for a change of scene, but this is heaven and that means you’re allowed to be lazy. For the two final days, we move on to The Grande St. Lucian for what turns out to be a highlight – a two-night stay in one of its OverThe-Water Bungalows. We’re among the first guests and decide we’ve gone from the sublime to the ridiculously sublime. Perched on a private jetty with a fire pit opposite the front door, this offers complete peace – and ocean. There’s a huge bedroom suite

with an area of glass floor where we can watch fish swimming below. Double doors open onto a deck with hammock, bathtub for two, loungers and steps down to the water. Our super-efficient and charming lady butler Ariann keeps us in champagne and delicacies – all artfully arranged in the lobby-cum-kitchenette every time we arrive home. The Grande has a quite exquisite beach and here – as at La Toc – we witness a fair few weddings. One has a beautiful bride, a groom in uniform and a guard of honour that makes me go a bit misty eyed. There’s a glamorous party on one of the piers with local steel drum band. Another wedding is simply a couple on the beach in front of the minister, together in paradise. On our final night we are escorted by Ariann to dine in style at Gordon’s, located on its own pier at the other end of the beach. Seafood and steaks slip down beautifully as we survey the moonlit ocean. Then we wander back along the beach for a final toast to good times around our personal firepit. St Lucia is a slice of paradise in the Caribbean and we decide we’d love to return to the island – it’s just that now we’ve stayed in heaven, will anywhere else do?

ur honeymoon journey began in style. Landing in Singapore we spent our first night at Raffles, the so-called ‘old lady of Singapore’. This picture-perfect colonial sugar lump of a building surrounded by an ever-growing skyline is the perfect way to start any special trip. Stunning service and interiors, history and luxury are all here. Rooms are enormous, while the pool is the most amazing oasis within the city. Our timing was perfect as we had the chance to experience its Sunday northern Indian buffet. The incredible food draws a crowd that almost rivals that in the legendary Long Bar, original home of the Singapore Sling. Even the briefest stay in this unique city134

state should include a visit to the Gardens by the Bay to see its incredible Cloud Forest. We departed Singapore as we’d arrived – in style – joining fellow train enthusiasts on board the Belmond Eastern & Oriental Express (E&O is a sister to the VeniceSimplon-Orient-Express) for a two-day journey through Malaysia and Thailand to Bangkok. We had high expectations of both this stately Belmond train and the magical landscapes we would travel through, and the reality exceeded them all. Food and service are second to none and add up to a truly unique and timeless experience. From watching the sun rising across the rice fields of Malaysia, to stops for river tours and local excursions, we were more than seduced by everything about this incredible travel experience.

“We We had high expectations of our journey and this stately Belmond train exceeded every one of them” After an all-too-brief stay at The Cabochon in Bangkok – a lovely boutique hotel and highly recommended – we journeyed on to Vietnam and the Amanoi, an Aman resort in Ninh Thuan province about an hour south of Nha Trang. Secluded, and located among mountains that drop down to the East Sea, its numerous infinity pools and secluded private beach left us entranced and with an overwhelming

sense of having landed in a place of perfect refinement. Design symmetry and neutral interiors are all completely in tune with the lush surroundings of the protected Nui Chua National Park. The enormous high-tented ceiling of the main pavilion is replicated throughout all 39 private villas. Ours had the most stunning private infinity pool looking out to the central lake. At Amanoi nothing is too big an ask, and this adds to the aura of complete luxury. The food is exceptional – local and with strong emphasis on fresh fish. We would return in a heartbeat. The final stop on our epic tour was Six Senses Ninh Van Bay. So remote is this eco resort that we had to take a private speedboat from just outside Nha Trang. We were transported to the most incredible stretch of beach, with private villas tucked away amid lush greenery and dense forest backdrop. Our villa had mesmerising views out to the ocean. Six Senses is very private, and with a clear focus on sustainability. In between cycling from spot to spot to

take in the landscape, we made time for a cookery class in the organic gardens and loved learning how to make Vietnamese hotpot, summer rolls and congee. We managed a glimpse of day-to-day life here with a riverboat tour and trip to the local market. But our favourite spot was a vantage point below Dining By The Rocks restaurant, where we could sit and simply gaze over a panoramic expanse of coastline and out to the ocean. elfast is a city that knows how to party, and we’ve been invited to a special craic at a hotel that is, quite simply, the place to stay; the roll-call of statesmen, rock icons and sporting legends who have checked in is impressive. And the manicured grounds and lofty towers might be a little intimidating were it not for the extremely warm welcome. A concierge races out to greet us while we’re still in the car park. Within minutes we are transported along

deep-pile-carpeted corridors to our room. There, a black slate tray bearing patisserie and plump strawberries bears white icing with more warm words of welcome. Our room is deluxe and modern, with views over lawns already dressed for the garden party to mark Culloden Estate & Spa’s 60 years as part of Hastings Hotel Group. The hotel has a fascinating history. It was built in the 1870s in the Victorian Gothic style by a local worthy, with much of the stone shipped here from Scotland. Its location – in the Holywood hills overlooking Belfast Lough – was chosen for both views

“Breakfast is another festival of local produce, from jams and honeys through sourdough bread to plump dry-cure bacon” and shelter. It’s said it’s sometimes a good three degrees warmer here than in the city centre. Later it became a bishops’ palace, before finally being reborn as a hotel. Weathered over time like a stately liner, it has also been painstakingly renovated and expanded. While it sits in 12-acres of rural idyll, it makes a great base for exploring both Belfast and the magical countryside and coastline that surround it. Cultra station, two minutes’ walk away, can whisk you downtown in minutes. Belfast City Airport (aka George Best Airport) is ten minutes by car. We feel as if we have landed at a very glamorous country-house weekend. It’s all cosy sofas and quiet corners where you can enjoy a roaring fire and afternoon tea with a view to the Lough. Later on, we have an official tour taking in the A-Listers’ suites in the Gothic towers that the likes of Lady Gaga and Eminem call home when they are passing through. My companion reserves his star-struck moment for the DeLorean DMC-12 parked in the ballroom for the afternoon and has a Back to the Future photo captured behind the driving wheel. After the party proper, we head out to Belfast – after all, it is Saturday night in a city that we’ve been reliably informed understands partying. Although it’s late and raining, the city is alive. We stop off at the

bar of the iconic Europa Hotel (also part of the Hastings family) and then head across the road to the gas-lit and National Trustowned Crown Bar. Belfast is packed with treasures, and one weekend won’t start to do them justice, but the next day we scratch the surface, taking in Titanic Belfast, a stunning contemporary visitor attraction that tells the story of the doomed liner and the vibrant city that created this and many other fine ships. We stroll round the Cathedral Quarter, an atmospheric hotchpotch of contemporary vibes and historic architecture, and with more than its fair share of photogenic bars that look like something dreamed up by a Hollywood prop department. We dine that night at The Mitre, the Culloden’s celebrated restaurant. Chef Paul McKnight focuses on seasonal and local and, since Ireland has fantastic produce to work with, this is a menu to savour. I simply have to start with scallops, a speciality and fished by hand around here in season. My companion chooses the compressed ham hock with apple. For mains, I stay in marine territory and order the halibut with crushed potato. Pomegranates and caper add zing to this comfort-food combination. My companion chooses short-rib beef. Cooked slowly and served with shitake mushrooms and caramelised onions, he declares it melt-

in-the-mouth perfection. We had an amuse bouche before our starters so are just too full to manage a desert, even though I do have a yen to try the peanut butter with chilli and banana and the cheeseboard looks like a rollcall of Ireland’s finest. We should have starved ourselves to do justice to the following morning’s breakfast – another festival of local produce, from jams and honeys through sourdough bread to plump dry-cure bacon. Even the tea is from a local merchant. We work off a few of the calories doing lazy laps in the spa, a haven of zen-like calm and ESPA restoratives, before regretfully saying goodbye. We promise ourselves on the drive to the airport that we will return, to see more of this Game of Thrones landscape, to explore more of this city that built so many mighty ships and – most of all – to enjoy the warmest welcome at its grandest hotel. * CULLODEN ESTATE & SPA is at Bangor Road, Holywood, Belfast. or Natalie and Shibby a wedding in the countryside was a must, and Hever Castle in Kent seemed a natural choice. Not only was this a great location for a party, but for Natalie the castle also held wonderful recollections. “I had all sorts of fond memories from childhood, both of family visits and school trips." As this was a high-summer wedding, they chose the picturesque Italian Garden. The combination of lakeside Loggia and Guthrie Pavilion offers a little slice of Italy in the Kent countryside, and with superb views to the castle. Organisation took place over nine months and was very much a family affair, with Natalie and Shibby’s parents acting as a sounding board. “We enjoyed the planning process, although at times it could be stressful. There were so many decisions to be made that it was really valuable to have this family support,” says Natalie. The weather was perfect on the day – warm, but not too warm – and this meant that their guests could enjoy the castle’s beautiful garden setting. The restrained and elegant colour theme was perfectly in tune with the season and the location, featuring pale pinks, whites and greens – including lovely sage-green gowns for Natalie’s adult bridesmaids. Shibby and his groomsmen wore smart blue suits with white buttonholes and sage-green ties. Pamela Brise, florist in residence at Hever Castle, created displays using this theme. Her skill and knowledge of the castle buildings meant she knew exactly how to highlight the romantic architectural features of the Loggia, winding garlands around its pillars and

We loved our first dance. It was wonderful to be on the dancefloor just having fun and feeling relaxed dressing its elegant wall urns with lush blooms. Complementary flowers dressed the delectable five-flavour tiered cake from leading London craft baker Konditor & Cook. Natalie’s stunning wedding dress, headpiece and veil were from Caroline Castigliano’s Knightsbridge atelier and she opted for a timeless ballgown shape (the Andrea), combining a crepe satin bodice with full organza skirt and beaded Belle belt. “I loved the whole experience of working with the team at Caroline Castigliano and couldn’t have been happier with my choice of gown,” she says. Her shoes were from Emmy London – perfect romantic wedding heels to match a fairytale gown. Originally Natalie’s father was going to be the master of ceremonies for the ABSOLUTELY-WEDDINGS.CO.UK

Walking down the aisle with my Mum and Dad and bridesmaids and seeing Shibby was a high point wedding, but a decision to call in toastmaster Peter Thompson was a move they didn’t regret. Natalie says: “We didn’t realise how much toastmasters do until we saw Peter in action. He was on hand throughout, helping guests, steering us to the next step and generally keeping things to time”. The inhouse team at Hever Castle were – says Natalie – excellent, providing great service and attention to detail. The pyrotechnics crew from Firebird Events were also impressive: “Real professionalism, and the fireworks were just beautiful”. The fireworks display over the lake turned out to be one of many high points of the day. Natalie says: "Walking down the aisle with my Mum, Dad and bridesmaids and seeing Shibby, with the beautiful ambience of the string quartet playing in the

background was a high point. And, for both of us, being surrounded by friends and family in this beautiful setting by the lake was special. “We also loved our first dance. We’d prepared for it by taking a few lessons with Marius Caluser, who gives dance classes privately as well as being the choreographer at Claridge’s. In fact, we enjoyed those dance lessons so much we plan to carry on lessons! It was wonderful to be on the dancefloor just having fun and feeling relaxed while our seven-piece live band worked their magic.” Natalie and Shibby’s advice to other brides and grooms would be to avoid getting stressed by the planning process. “It’s easy to get hung up on the details, but remember to focus on the bigger picture,” says Natalie. “On the day itself, if everyone is having fun and you are feeling relaxed then it’s all working out well.”

atie and Gürcan (aka Gooch) chose Castell D’Empordà for their spectacular destination-wedding weekend, and held it over a bank holiday to extend the party. The city and the castle hotel had special significance in their lives, as it was a place they had visited in the very early days of their relationship. Katie says: “It was a little risky, but we decided to make the most of a bank holiday weekend only a couple of weeks into our relationship and found ourselves in the majestic city of Girona. I stumbled upon Castell d’Empordà, a stunning 14th Century castle set upon the hillside. When we sat down for lunch there we realised it was actually our first proper ‘date’, which was extremely extravagant (and ludicrous/brave). We went on to fall in love over that weekend”. As a wedding location, it was an obvious choice, not only because of

its character and superb food, drink and service, but also because it could host a crowd. The bank holiday they chose was the anniversary of that first romantic weekend together five years earlier. Katie says: “It seemed like a very good omen”. With arrival on the Saturday and check out on the Monday, this was planned as a weekend party to savour. The fun started the night before the wedding so that guests could get to know one another. The poolside barbeque, complete with flamenco dancer and Spanish band was, says Katie, a brilliant ice-breaker. The weather on Katie and Gooch’s wedding day was as good as it could be – in fact, they were blessed with warm sunshine over the whole weekend. To let guests make the most of the locale and avoid the midday sun, they scheduled the ceremony for later in the day. Katie says: “We had a start time of 4pm in the olive grove and this meant that guests were free to head to the seaside, chill by the pool, enjoy a long lunch or just snooze off the night before”.

The ceremony was conducted by humanist celebrant Toby Harper, and Katie, Gooch and all their guests were enchanted by his unique service, combining humour with a sense of commitment and love. With guests gathered around them in the sunshine, this was one of the high points of the day. Katie says: “It was a joy to look out at all of our beautifully dressed friends and family who were gathered alfresco before us”. The photographs and wedding film, captured so brilliantly by Divine Day Photography show a relaxed and magical coming together of families and friends. Katie had chosen an elegant dress by iconic Barcelona designer Rosa Clará and its flowing lines and low back were the perfect relaxed and glamorous look for the sundrenched castle setting. Gooch looked dapper in a blue Ozwald

Boateng suit with neat buttonhole to match the bride’s lush pastel bouquet. Katie says Sandra Ribes, the wedding planner at Castell D’Empordà, was fantastic. “I felt as though I glided from one moment to the next soaking up every minute of the whole day and that is an absolute testament to all of the wonderful suppliers and organisers." Family and friends had also ‘mucked in’ to help with final preparation. “We had a little production line by the swimming pool on the Friday afternoon helping us with the final pieces such as orders of service and favours. It’s amazing what a beer in the sunshine can do to encourage the troops." Afternoon rolled into mellow evening sunshine, as guests celebrated in a unique Catalan setting. And after the feasting round the tables, guests headed to the cave under the castle to dance the night away. Katie says: “It was brilliant witnessing our

I don’t think the cave at Castell d’Empordà has ever seen such a beautifully chaotic clash of cultures, energy and vibrancy”. Katie and Gooch would thoroughly recommend a destination wedding. “It changes the nature of the party, and believe me, people will come. We could not have hoped for more. Every drink that was drunk and every morsel of food that was devoured was delightful, and that was what we so wished to accomplish – a summery party filled with the best people we know, good food and drink, lots of laughter, lots of chatter, lots of dancing and lots of love!”

FESTA Clareana and Eduardo’s wedding in the Sussex countryside brought together English country charm and Brazilian style for a perfect garden festa We d d i n g s t y l i n g S O M E T H I N G B L U E W E D D I N G P L A N N N I N G Photographer JULIE MICHAELSEN

he wedding of Clareana and Eduardo was the perfect marriage of Brazilian flair and English country style. While the couple live in Brazil, they decided their celebration would be at Eduardo’s grandfather’s property in the Sussex countryside. This country home set in fine grounds and with views across the South Downs is a place that holds many special memories for the family – it’s also an incredibly romantic setting. Since most guests were flying over from Brazil, Clareana and Eduardo envisaged a day that combined lots of English elements with the party traditions of home. Enter wedding planner and stylist Emma McDonald of Something Blue Wedding Planning, who set about realising their vision of a perfect festa in the English countryside. The couple only had time for two planning visits to the UK prior to the event, but Emma was able to design the wedding seamlessly with the assistance of Skype and WhatsApp discussions.

The grounds of the house offer unrestricted views over the Downs, creating a breathtaking setting for an outdoor ceremony. The chosen place was a sheltered pond framed by stone steps. This created a natural dais where the pastor’s blessing could take place in front of the guests seated below. The pond was filled with white rose petals while lush white roses were draped around the wall. The formal lawns were perfect for drinks and canapés, but the celebration needed a space for the feast. Eduardo and Clareana didn’t want a typical marquee, and definitely no drapes, so Emma McDonald decided a PapaKåta Sperry tent would be their perfect match. With sides left open, this created a wonderful alfresco dining experience that made the most of the magical garden, while also providing shelter. It also had all the space they needed for dancing long into the night. From this key decision, the styling of the celebration really came together. Clareana wanted the tables to connect to symbolise the coming together of all the families and so a U-shape table plan was devised. It ABSOLUTELY-WEDDINGS.CO.UK   155

looked stunning and expressed this sentiment of togetherness beautifully. The Sperry was surrounded by candles and festoon-lit walkways. Inside the tent, further festoon lights and suspended flower hoops framed the U-shape table plan perfectly. To soften the light, the tent also contained 350 pillar candles on brass stands and hundreds of twinkling tea lights – the perfect way to highlight the gold bead-rimmed charger plates and glittering glassware. The couple were keen to maintain the English theme by using traditional English flowers. Marianne Johnson of Sweet Pea Flowers London created glorious displays. White roses, hydrangeas and peonies were ranged along the wooden tables in garlands, spilling over the ends as if they were growing. The same colour theme was carried through to Clareana’s beautiful bridal bouquet, featuring lush pink peonies and pure white roses. Some time-honoured Brazilian traditions were in the mix. One was the stunning way favours were displayed to guests; a mass of confectionary and cake was flown over from Brazil and placed on a table for guests to sample throughout the day. Music and dancing play a huge part in South American weddings, and entertainment was high

on Eduardo’s list of priorities. Emma sourced a string quartet for earlier in the day, while Philosophy Band had the dance floor full from the start of the evening to 1pm close. Eduardo ensured one nod to his favourite show. As a huge fan of Game of Thrones, he wanted elements of its fantasy world in the mix without it becoming a theme. As Emma says: “With the Sperry tent and long banquet style tables for the wedding feast we were halfway there, and we completed the look with outdoor fire pits, reindeer skins and benches for guests to sit and enjoy the starlit Sussex sky and the fantastic atmosphere of a truly magical wedding celebration”.

GLAMOUR

Illana and Bradley’s wedding at Sunbeam Studios brought together friends and family from across the world for a contemporary wedding with London style Photography ANNAMARIE STEPNEY

F

or Illana and Bradley, London seemed the only logical choice for their wedding. Illana grew up in Preston and Bradley New Zealand and, since many friends and family were travelling long distances, the capital was a logical meeting point. Beyond the practicalities, it also felt like the right place: “London is where we met and have made our home and many friends, so it felt right to hold our wedding here,” says Illana. While they looked at lots of venues, Sunbeam Studios stood out for its fabulous light-filled spaces and for its flexibility. This Edwardian former car showroom in W10 had all the components they wanted, including plenty of room to cater for a crowd, lovely architecture and even a pretty garden that is perfect for alfresco drinks. Illana says: “We looked at a lot of places, but it was really important to us to celebrate the day in one place, with no travelling between venues. Sunbeam Studios has a great mix of spaces and were also very flexible about letting us introduce additional elements that were important to us". This included allowing the couple to serve the special beer Bradley had brewed himself to mark the occasion of their wedding day!

“Seeing Seeing everyone who had come to celebrate with us – and with many travelling such long distances – was wonderful” Illana and Bradley incorporated Art Deco elements into the design of the day although, as Illana puts it, “nothing over-the-top”. The white interior of Sunbeam Studios created a neutral backdrop that worked brilliantly with their restrained theme of navy with peach accents. Illana’s choice of wedding gown, a glamorous Jenny Packham design with Deco-style crystal trim, certainly fitted the theme. Bridesmaids wore chic navy short gowns, while Bradley’s groomsmen wore navy blue suits, with ties from Mrs Bow Tie. The incredible flowers were from local florist Scarlet & Violet. Illana says: “They

were amazing to work with. I asked them for peach peonies and the florist explained that she’d have to let them fade from their natural pink to get the colour I wanted. This meant her ordering them four days before the wedding, but the final result was wonderful”. Bradley – a graphic designer – created the stationery, including wedding invitations, and signage. As a keen baker, Illana, took charge of the cake. She says: “I wasn’t going to let anyone else make my wedding cake! It had a lemon tier and an orange tier and with buttercream icing”. Canapés and English sparkling wine

were followed by a wedding breakfast, all created by the in-house catering team at Sunbeam Studios. Guests mingled in the main hall and garden and then stayed on for dancing into the night. Illana says there were many high points: “One was actually getting married. We’d each written our own vows, and although we’d discussed this in advance neither of us knew what the other was going to say so there was a wonderful element of surprise”. Then there was the pleasure of having so many friends together – including all those who had travelled long distances to be with them. Illana says: “Just seeing everyone who had come to celebrate our day with us was wonderful”. Illana and Bradley’s advice to other couples is not to overthink things. “Don’t spend too much time on Pinterest. You see thousands of creative ideas and it’s easy to go crazy making things. We loved personalising our celebration, but also recognised that no one was going to notice all the minute details. People are there to be with you, and that’s what matters.”

Real Weddings PERFECT DAY

Perfect Day Marcy and Jim had the trip of a lifetime – inspired by Game of Thrones, they flew from Chicago to Northern Ireland to marry at Dunluce Castle Photography GRAHAM CRICHTON grahamcr ichton.com

F

or Marcy and Jim, their wedding had to be something very special. Inspired by Game of Thrones, they decided the perfect spot was over 3,500 miles away. Planned with the help of a team in Northern Ireland, it turned into a day they will never forget. Marcy takes up the story. MARCY: A Google search yielded Dunluce Castle, and we were immediately enchanted. We didn’t even realise that this castle was featured on Game of Thrones until after the fact. However, we were aware that Mermaid’s Cove, which is underneath the castle,

had been used as a location. Our family members chose to make the trip with us and my brother, who got ordained just for this occasion, officiated the wedding dressed as Jon Snow. I wish I had made special arrangements for my dress. I fell in love with it as soon as I put it on – perfect for a wedding at a castle ruin in Ireland. For some reason, I didn’t weigh ease of transport from Chicago into my decision. The airline let me use the pilot’s coat closet, but it turns out that this is a very small closet. Thankfully, it made it to Ireland undamaged. Dunluce was a bit colder than we’re used to in August, but luckily the rain held off for the duration of our

time at the site. The craggy shore and lush yet desolate landscape was the perfect combination of dramatic and romantic. It was a dream come true. GRAHAM SAYS: This stretch of coast is incredibly beautiful, but also at the mercy of the elements and on this particular day it was unseasonably cold. We thought Marcy’s brother might find it too hot dressed as Jon Snow, but as it turned out he was the only one of us who stayed warm. The light and the setting were magical and it did feel a special place. It was a huge pleasure to work with Marcy and Jim to make their dream for their wedding day come true.
