rides can choose between fairytale volume for the ballroom, luxury textures for dayinto-evening glamour and clean lines that are perfect for dressed-down contemporary elegance. Our showcase of the latest bridal trends begins on page 39. This issue’s fashion shoot focuses on the work of super-talented London-based designer Andrey Savin and was shot on location at Hever Castle – surely one of Europe’s most breathtaking wedding venues. We have an interview with Spain’s first lady of bridal design Rosa Clará (page 32) and were privileged to talk to legendary designer and British fashion ambassador Dame Zandra Rhodes about the infamous punk bridal gown that formed the finale for her 1977 Conceptual Chic collection. Desperately daring and pre-dating Versace’s rips and safety pins by more than a decade, the gown’s place in high-fashion history is now assured. You can view it for the second time at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York from NovemberFebruary as part of the ‘Masterworks: Unpacking Fashion’ exhibition. Read the story of its creation and admire the sketches Zandra Rhodes drew specially for Absolutely Weddings on page 30. Alongside the fashion greats, we have expert advice from industry leaders in everything from food to flowers, superb venue ideas and magical luxury travel trips to transport you. We look forward to seeing you at the bridal shows, and don’t forget to stay in touch via absolutely-weddings.co.uk and at our @absolutelyweddings Facebook page. Enjoy! ◆

The thigh-high side split revealed the legs, as did the ripped and torn effects created by the holes – these were highlighted with black overlock stitching. Reaction to the gown was, to put it mildly, mixed. US Vogue christened Zandra Rhodes “the Queen of punk” following the catwalk show. But she recalls that the public were shocked by her Grafton Street (off Bond Street) store’s dramatic Conceptual Chic window display. She says: “Our customers didn’t want to know, so after about two weeks we quietly took the display down”.

he year was 1977 and London’s punk scene was exploding. Enter Zandra Rhodes, certainly no stranger to counterculture, although during the mid 1970s she had become associated with – as she puts it – “beautiful flowing chiffons”. It was her fabulous fairytale white gown that was chosen for the 1973 Norman Parkinson portrait marking the engagement of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips. A year before Conceptual Chic she had created a glamorous silk chiffon wedding dress (now in the V&A collection) for fellow fashion designer Elizabeth Emmanuel. Her Conceptual Chic collection was a radical departure, picking up on what she felt was happening on London’s streets. The main body of the collection featured plain jerseys embellished with holes, sink chains and safety pins and using a colour palette of red, shocking pink and black. After she created this one white gown, her then business partner Anne Knight said they had to make it a showpiece. And so her punk bridal gown became the finale of the catwalk show. The wedding dress design was a two-piece construction, combining a white jersey full-length skirt with
While it was wildly ahead of its time – and was never worn by a real bride – its influence certainly lives on. Gianni Versace, who launched Elizabeth Hurley in ‘that dress’ with safety pins in 1994, openly cited Rhodes’ work as an inspiration. The wedding gown was selected for the 2013 PUNK: Chaos to Couture exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. It will be exhibited again at the Met from November-February at Masterworks: Unpacking Fashion – testament to the role of Zandra Rhodes’ daring punk bride in converting street movement into high-fashion concept.
The gown was a statement piece – it is a classic in a weird way ZANDRA RHODES DBE
Zandra Rhodes has always acknowledged influences beyond the punk revolution – notably the 1938 Tears Dress created by Schiaparelli using a print designed by Dali. Today, she considers the Conceptual Chic collection among her personal favourites. She says: “The wedding dress is a classic in a weird way”.

Dame Zandra Rhodes studied at Royal College of Art and became famous from the late 1960s for her avant-garde designs and mastery of printed textiles, earning fans from Bianca Jagger and Freddie Mercury to Tina Chow, Jackie Onassis and Diana Princess of Wales. Since 2000, she has also been designing costumes for opera. She established London’s Fashion and Textile Museum in 2003 and was made Chancellor of the University of the Creative Arts (UCA) in 2010. Today, she divides her time between London and San Diego.

FASHION first lady
Credited with helping to transform the bridal scene, Rosa Clará Pallarès presides over a truly international empire, but says that it is still the real bride who remains her first and most important inspiration Wo r d s b y

R
osa Clará Pallarès is Spanish bridal’s fi rst lady. Her eponymous company Grupo Rosa Clará is an international powerhouse that dresses brides from Azerbaijan to Qatar, as well as producing cocktail and occasion gowns that grace many red carpets. The plaudits come thick and fast these days and – in a country that specialises in dressing the world’s brides – her collections regularly get top billing. This April, once again, her gowns opened the show at Barcelona Bridal Week and were widely covered in the Spanish and international press. Rosa Clará is clear that – despite the celebrity fans who regularly attend her shows or make a splash in one of her gowns at a fi lm premiere or party – the real star is always the bride. She says: “Real brides were and are my fi rst inspiration – it’s about their tastes, desires and wishes for their wedding day”. And herein lies the secret of her brand’s stratospheric rise, because she began by rethinking what brides actually wanted in a sector that was – as far as she was concerned – a fashion backwater. absolutely-weddings.co.uk

EXQUISITE FABRICS ARE A TRADEMARK
Having worked in the bridal industry for over a decade she set out on her own in the mid 1990s. She says: “I started 20 years ago with a multi-brand bridal shop and I realised that what women were looking for just wasn’t available among the brands in existence. That’s why I decided to create my own collection. I thought: ‘I can contribute something’.” She says it was tough creating a brand from zero, but from the opening of the fi rst shop in Barcelona there has been an eager market for the elegant, luxurious and fashion-forward designs she creates. “When we started, I thought we could add something different, something new, to the bridal sector – I now think we revolutionised it. But when we opened our fi rst shop I never imagined I would achieve so much professionally and personally.” Recalling the breakthrough collection, she now recognises how different it was: “That fi rst collection was truly innovative, with top quality pieces that enabled the bride to select a gown for her big day that matched her identity – a design that had her name on it”. Almost from the start the brand gained an international audience; it rapidly found success in Italy and other countries across Europe, particularly those that

shared a tradition for knockout glamour at weddings. Over time more markets opened and the network of bridal stores has now become truly global. Rosa Clará says: “At the moment we count 140 shops around the world, with 3,500 stockists in 81 countries”. It helps that Spain has a worldwide reputation for fantastic bridalwear. “As a nation, we are the second biggest bridal gown exporter after China, which is a very significant position. There is a long tradition of exceptional textiles in Spain and this quality is recognised at international level. The label ‘made in Spain’ is seen as a mark of quality.” Rosa Clará has been widely recognised for her unique contribution to bridal fashion trends and business leadership; the awards are too numerous to detail in full but include best bridal designer at Miami Fashion Week and EY’s Entrepreneur of the Year – she says she values each and every one of these awards. But at Rosa Clará’s Barcelona base, THERE ARE THREE BRIDAL there is no COLLECTIONS TO time to rest on SUIT EVERY STYLE OF WEDDING these laurels. The brand has
now grown to encompass three distinct collections that all carry her signature and have different characteristics to suit brides and wedding styles. Rosa Clará is for the bride who demands the ultimate in quality and materials – gorgeous lace from the south of France, fine Italian embroidery and exceptional cloth. Rosa Clará Two is focused around high-glamour silhouettes, with volume skirts, soft laces and fantasy tulles, while Rosa Clará Soft is about romance – using soft and floaty fabrics for the elegant and thoroughly modern bride. Previous profiles have detailed how she personally supervises each and every gown design. She has admitted that this creative control is both her biggest strength and weakness – she is learning to delegate. Seasonal collections begin with what Rosa Clará

Real brides are my first inspiration – it’s about their desires for their wedding day describes as a massive search for cloth of the right quality. This is combined with a trawl for information about what brides are asking for. The team study bridal and fashion trends and use the ideas this generates to develop prototype gowns. Prototypes are analysed and modified until they match the original vision, utilising fabrics and accessories that work with the brand spirit and the Rosa Clará signature. It is, as she admits, a painstaking process. “It takes a lot of dedication and effort but I am surrounded by a very professional and motivated team. Our AUTUMN / WINTER 2016

We offer a huge variety of designs and silhouettes and dress women of all ages. I would say we have had the good fortune to dress women with a lot of style – the kind of women who set trends and understand the value of a good gown.” For the coming season and beyond, Spanish bridal fashion’s first lady is predicting a very creative take on the bridal silhouette – from billowing skirts to highly structured lines to romantic details such as bows and organza petals. The designer has absolutely no doubts that her magic formula works for our brides: “I believe UK brides understand us perfectly – they recognise the quality of our cloth, the couture details and the fashion concepts in our bridal collections – these elements mark out a Rosa Clará original and appeal to the brides who choose us.” ROSA CLARÁ for UK and international stockists, visit rosaclara.es/en-gb/

wedding gown is not only one of the most personal and important wardrobe investments we make, but also a treasured source of memories that last long after the celebrations are over. Investing in expert cleaning and storing is essential to ensure your dress is preserved and remains as beautiful as the moment you first chose it. With over 50 years’ experience, Bentley Garment Care is recognised as a national specialist in the dry cleaning and care of wedding dresses; it is also one of the few trusted specialists in bridal garments in London. The team's extensive knowledge of luxury fabrics and their personal service and attention to detail means they check every garment carefully, use only specialist hand treatments and are skilled at removing reminders of a great party – from red wine to lobster sauce. The team at Bentley Garment Care have expertise at working with the most delicate materials, including lace, organza, beading and diamante and, with a long tradition of assisting both brides and the theatre industry, they are also used and recommended by leading designers, suppliers and boutiques. Any untreated marks, blemishes or spills will ruin the fabric of a wedding dress over time, and the sooner cleaning takes place the more likely it is your gown will be successfully restored to its pristine best.
While many brides store their gown as a treasured heirloom, others may decide to pass it on. If you plan to sell or gift yours, it is essential to have it cleaned as quickly as possible to preserve its value.
SPECIALIST CONCIERGE SERVICE

British DESIGNERS TO KNOW Bespoke, tailored and luxe, here are five British-based designers who are worth consulting if you’re looking for a unique homegrown style, fabulous hand-made tailoring and the truly personal touch Wo r d s b y
LIBBY NORMAN
ANDREA HAWKES
he London design house of Andrea T Hawkes has taken things back to fi rst principles, creating elegant tailored gowns and separates that are in tune with the changing face of modern weddings – especially celebrations where the bride is looking for glamour with a fashion-forward and understated vibe. Designer Andrea Hawkes worked with several London bridal couture designers before establishing her label and has translated her experience working with many brides into a curated collection that has style without the fuss. At the label’s Clerkenwell base, you can view main and capsule collections and also commission a gown. The focus here is on exceptional fabrics – Italian silks, French laces – and the fine details such as covered buttons. But you will see updates to all of these traditional couture features, including some really fine ‘edgy’ laces featuring pattern rather than flowers. The overall effect is perfect for the 21st century bride and everything is designed and made in the heart of London. andreahawkes.co.uk
consultation. If you visit the Glasgow store you can also visit her workshop where every bridal gown is designed and made. The Joyce Young look is all about grown-up glamour – with options ranging from sleek tailored gowns to fairytale full-skirted numbers. The exceptional fabrics and workmanship, and ability to design a gown from scratch (the full couture process with toiles and fittings) are what make this a place to come if you want something one off. There is a huge emphasis on personal service and Joyce often outfits the whole female party (bridesmaid and mother of the bride outfits follow the same grown-up glam aesthetic). She is launching a new bridal separates collection this autumn – bringing even more choice into her exceptional collection. joyceyoungcollections.co.uk

ew European designer Katya Shehurina splits her time between Soho and her studio in Riga, Latvia and she brings what she describes as a ‘modern vintage’ aesthetic to bridal design. There is certainly a romantic twist that is perfect for the boho wedding, although great cut and interesting pairings of fabrics keep things fresh. Brides visiting Katya Katya

Shehurina’s showroom just off Brewer Street can view the 2017 collection of gowns, but also have the option to create a bespoke design – either by mixing and matching components they love from different dresses or by exploring the endless possibilities of changing colour of gown or underslip. There are wonderful and exclusive laces in the mix – all sourced by Katya – along with fine Italian silks and Swarovski detailing. Gowns are all handmade, and in as little as six to eight weeks for the last-minute bride. But if you have more time this is a great place to come for an entirely bespoke and utterly enchanting gown. shehurina.com
LYN ASHWORTH
yn Ashworth is a byword for the English bridal gown – romantic and timeless elegance – but was established in London by a New Zealander. Now owned by equally talented designer Sarah Barrett, it maintains the same unique signature that has earned it fans across Europe and the Middle East. Every Lyn Ashworth gown uses fine silks and laces – no compromises – and the workmanship is as British as the designs. While Lyn Ashworth gowns are stocked in leading boutiques – including BOA in Richmond – a by-appointment visit to its home base is definitely worth it. The Staffordshire HQ sits on Duchy land, surrounded by the beautiful fields that often feature in its photography shoots, so this is

possibly the most romantic bridal workroom in the country. There are endless opportunities to create a bespoke gown – Sarah and team regularly work with UK and overseas brides who want a timeless dress designed and made in the heart of England. lynashworth.co.uk

epalese-born and London-based designer Sanyukta Shrestha is an exciting new name on the bridal scene. Trained at London College of Fashion, she has quickly made a mark for elegant and sustainable bridalwear and

occasion pieces. Her studio just off the Fulham Road is an inspiring source of ideas – especially if you want something a little different. Sanyukta has a very fresh take on what brides might want – so her collection includes fabulous silk jumpsuits alongside ethereal full-length gowns and fashionforward two-piece ensembles, and with lots of colour choices other than white. Each gown is handmade and the commitment to craft is part of the label’s DNA. Fairtrade and ethical fabrics such as organic silk, bamboo and hemp feature and she works to help ensure the craft skills she grew up with in rural Nepal survive. Alongside her ready-to-wear bridal and occasion collections, Sanyukta offers bespoke, giving you the opportunity to experience the couture processes involved in hand-making a true original. sanyuktashrestha.com

DESIGN DNA: SPAIN
Rosa Clará
Marco & Maria
Clare Thompson, of London and Birmingham store The Wedding Club, explores the design DNA of Spain by picking out four favourite bridal labels
O
Rosa Clará
ne in ten of the world’s brides wear a Spanish wedding gown and a visit to Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week shows the sheer scale of its industry. The Wedding Club’s Clare Thompson, a regular at BBFW, says: “Spain’s traditions of exquisite tailoring and grand weddings have certainly helped cement ‘made in Spain’ as a mark of quality, and the industry's size means hot new designers can emerge”. Here are four designers that Clare believes show the range of Spanish talent.
ROSA CLARÁ
S itting alongside Pronovias as
a global force in bridalwear – see page 32 – Rosa Clará has a unique brand signature. Clare says: “I’ve always loved Rosa Clará’s impeccable style and the fi nish of the gowns. I’d characterise the look as refi ned – on-trend details never overwhelm the feminine and elegant lines”. For 2017, Clare says, there are fabulous textured gowns, some with 1950s-style details.
PRONOVIAS
T he chances are everybody
has attended a wedding where the bride wore Pronovias, Spain's largest bridal exporter. Clare says: “It’s universally recognised for exceptional quality. Atelier Pronovias, offered at our Birmingham store, is made with haute couture processes, and we admire the extraordinary care the Barcelona company’s seamstresses put in to handmaking each gown”. While you will always fi nd timeless styles, there are edgy elements: “In 2017 brides will see strong emphasis on sleek, body-lengthening lines”.
MARCO & MARIA YolanCris
YOLANCRIS
Pronovias
F ellow Barcelona label
YolanCris was founded by sisters Yolanda and Cristina Perez and is a stellar example of Catalonia’s talent for fi nding new interpretations of bridal. Clare says: “We advise brides who want something edgy to consider YolanCris. There’s a 1970s influence – think Studio 54 glamour with contemporary edge”. For 2017, expect floaty layering and glam belt, fringe and scarf details.
W hile Barcelona is bridal
epicentre, Tenerife has produced one of the most exciting bridal labels in Europe. Marco Marrero and María Díazstyle – who started out with a small design workshop – now have a global fan base. Clare describes the look as contemporary fairytale – with trademark sheer fabrics. For 2017, says Clare, the focus remains body skimming shapes and ethereal transparent overlays, plus marine colours and details such as pussy bows. lush & Ivory is a bridal boutique where the focus is on exceptional personal service in a luxurious and tranquil environment. With a background in high finance, Safinah Nakimuli decided that her home ‘London village’ of Dulwich was the ideal location for a designer boutique dedicated to giving bridesto-be VIP personal service. Safinah says: "I've been passionate about bridal fashion for as long as I can remember. There's something so special about helping clients find their dream dress. The way I see it, I'm in the business of making each of my brides feel unique, special and at their most beautiful on their wedding day". The boutique's name Blush & Ivory was chosen by Safinah in honour of the classic wedding bouquet of pale pink and ivory roses with silvery eucalyptus and frosty senecio. Safinah's elegant boutique certainly lives up to its name as it is always filled with fresh flowers created by Twickenham wedding and event florist Rose&Mary. The boutique’s neutral and sophisticated interior features rails of gorgeous gowns, selected after painstaking research. Safinah says: “I have chosen exceptional bridal labels that offer quality of materials and workmanship – and the range of styles – to appeal to contemporary brides. More labels are set to follow, but they must be absolutely right for our brides”. World-renowned Barcelona label Pronovias was chosen because of the superb quality and range in its bridal collections. Offering exceptional fine fabrics and European design flair, Pronovias gowns are also known for their superb flattering fit – whether your choice is form-fitting fishtail or elegant princess line.

Alexandra Wood
bespoke tailor who has made her name refreshing the wardrobes of sartorial Londoners – has a new venture refreshing the image of suit hire. And let’s be honest, it hasn’t always had a good press. The albums from all too many weddings tell a sorry tale of ill-fitting and creased garments picked up on the morning and removed as soon as decency allows. But this venture is something different. Two years in the creation and
taking all the knowhow Alexandra has garnered from outfitting grooms, best men and wedding guests (alongside City gentlemen), it offers a reassuringly stress-free way of getting the suited and booted you looking just right. The chosen location for her fi rst hire store is Bishop’s Stortford, a sleepy Hertfordshire market town half-an-hour from the City by train and convenient for Stansted Airport. The premises is a Tudor-fronted store on the High Street that has the distinction of having been a tailor’s shop for most of its long history. Alexandra says: “The landlord was delighted to have another tailor take over the store – it works with the building’s long tradition as an outfitter”. While the exterior is chocolate-box traditional, inside is a pared back setting with comfy sofas and lots of space – no stuffed racks to frighten the phobic clothes shopper. Instead, Alexandra has carefully curated an exclusive hire range
75 Weddings_Sep16_WELL GROOMED.indd 75
that can cope with whatever the diary throws at you. There are ten collections, ranging from the smartest summer sand through light grey (this season’s bright blue, according to Alexandra) and the classic navy. You will find a classic Bond DJ in the mix – specially made by Torre to be slimfitting and ultra flattering – along with contemporary-cut formal morning dress and some sharp but no nonsense suits that would be perfectly in keeping with

any style of wedding. All are designed with a particular style of occasion in mind, so the weight will be appropriate whether this is a chilly country church or tropicalisland affair. The process of hiring is designed to be pleasurable and Alexandra includes personal styling within the hire. This means she can assist with everything from a crisp bespoke shirt to the perfect silk pocket square and shoes. She says trends in weddings are changing – with some of
her clients spending equal to or more than the bride: “Men want to feel as special as women on their wedding day – and, of course we also offer the option to hire the suit and then buy it if you fall in love with it”. The back rooms of the store offer plenty of space to try on garments and get them properly tailored to you – this is especially convenient if a group want to choose and be measured for the same suit. Alexandra does always recommends that the groom
wears something a little different to stand out – it is his day after all. Alexandra’s customers are not just attending weddings – the service is equally convenient for summer ball or black tie occasion. Because this is not a mass-hire operation (Alexandra would typically only hire out a maximum of 18 suits a week), you can be sure she has tabs on your event. This means you don’t risk the sartorial disaster of wearing the exact same suit as a fellow guest. Alexandra Wood Bespoke’s hire shop is at 10 High Street, Bishop’s Stortford. COMMISSION A RING If you can’t find your dream jewel or setting, here are three ways to go bespoke and make the ultimate love token a true one-off
A
n engagement ring is about the most personal piece of jewellery you can give or receive, so little wonder that it can be so hard to choose. But if you have something very specific in mind – or want to make the whole process of designing the ring something special – here are three options to consider.
LONDON BESPOKE
ominic Walmsley offers a design-from-scratch service from his Clerkenwell and Sevenoaks studios. Having begun his career at age 17 with a traditional apprenticeship to a London gold and silversmith, he has now been creating dream designs for over 30 years, counting Helen Mirren and Coffie Annan among his distinguished clients. Every design is made in his Clerkenwell workshop, typically taking four to six weeks from fi rst idea to fi nished commission – although he’s been known to complete a piece in days for an impulse engagement or gift. The process begins with a no-obligation chat through ideas. Dominic says: “One of the fi rst things we establish is people’s style – without sounding too simplistic, we need to know if your taste is sleek and architectural or pretty

and more froufrou”. From there, the fi rst sketches are drawn up and the fun of selecting gemstones can begin. Dominic says: “This is where clients get a crash course in distinguishing between different quality stones and the four Cs of cut, colour, clarity and carat”. Some clients will ask Dominic and his team to work with an heirloom piece. He says: “Repolished and re-set, old stones can look like new and they do tend to have more character than many modern stones because they were individually cut – and of course there’s the symbolic value of a family piece”. From the initial idea, a quote is drawn up and there will also be a meeting for a fitting. “One thing I’ve learned over the years is that this is crucial,” says Dominic. “People’s original idea may change once they try on the prototype, and this gives us the opportunity to adjust so that the final design is perfect”. His tip for engagement ring buyers is to always consider the wedding ring that goes with it, so that the two fit perfectly together. “You’d be surprised what a difference this can make – and we offer in-between sizes

international client list. The business was born after Neil became frustrated during his own search for an engagement ring for his then fiancé. Now Gemological Institute of America (GIA) accredited and with multiple other qualifications, he has access to wholesale markets across the world and exclusive closed-shop events such as Antwerp Diamond Fair. Neil’s clients come to his London and Leeds offices with a range of requests: “Some clients may want a surprise gift or special piece, and then it’s a process of research, stripping back to likes and dislikes to narrow down to the perfect piece”. He can also advise clients who want to convert an heirloom jewel into something contemporary that they can wear – for instance, converting three rings into one piece. His advice can be invaluable. Neil says: “In some cases it might not be a good idea if the value of the piece is partly in its fine setting, style or maker”. Another popular option is to propose with a stone (he can ensure you find ‘the one’) and then the recipient gets to design her own ring – finding the right makers and advising on styles and settings is all part of his service. Neil taps into

his extensive network of skilled designers and makers and can be the conduit to ensuring the final piece matches your vision. He says: “My role is all about personal service, so it can be as simple as helping someone find the perfect solitaire ring, right up to sourcing an elaborate diamond or mixed gemstone necklace – in a digital age, this is a very personal approach that taps into traditional techniques”. or the ultimate engagement gift, head down to Cape Town on a diamond safari. Organised by Benguela Diamonds and offered through chic hotel Ellerman House, this is a once-in-alifetime experience where you prospect for a sea diamond and have it made into your one-off ring. Benguela Diamonds – which is owned by South African diamond diver Wynand Hendrikse – operates a private sea diamond concession on South Africa’s west coast, diving for diamonds sourced from the seabed. The safari involves a private charter to Port Nolloth, where you stay as guest in a villa overlooking the diamond site. You then join the dive master and crew and can either watch from the boat or dive with the team provided you have a PADI Level 1 dive certificate. Following a gourmet lunch at the villa, you pick your rough diamond from the seabed booty, assisted by a grader from Benguela. After that, it can be polished and set at the company’s Stellenbosch design studio – taking it from seabed to your ring finger in as little as three days. Trends for 2017
Leading wedding hair and beauty specialists Team Glam are already planning key looks for 2017 – working with both brides and leading bridal designers. Here, they share their lookbook essentials for the coming seasons P h o t o s : P H O T O G R A P H Y B YA N N A M A R I E . C O M

eam Glam are wedding hair and make-up specialists who create looks for both brides and bridal designers. Makeup director Carla Brooks and hair director Tara Cox predict that 2017 will continue to be the year of the relaxed bride – with natural hair and low-key but radiant make-up. Here are Team Glam’s top trends for the year ahead.
FRESH, GLOWING SKIN
For the brides and designers we work with, 2017 is all about fresh, luminous skin. The days of full-coverage matte-finish foundations are over, and the natural complexion continues to be the most important starting point of the bridal look. And, of course, everyone wants to look their most radiant on their wedding day. The secret of achieving this look is to focus on skin tone, creating a radiant and healthy glow that is fresh and bright. Using a ‘less is more’ approach with bases, and adding subtle blushers and highlighters, helps to build colour and radiance into
90 28/09/2016 11:57
WEDDINGS BEAUTY LOOKS the skin. This trend works well with all bridal styles and, while the fi nished effect is subtle and low-key, it relies on the right base products.
MATTE AND NEUTRAL EYES
The ‘no make-up’ trend is still huge for brides. A key element of this is using a matte fi nish and neutral shades for eyeshadows. Subtle shadows give the perfect tone and add enough defi nition to the eyes to make them the focus of the face. Another benefit of using matte neutrals is that they are not overpowering for daytime – working well with both strong light and photography – and can easily be built up to create a stronger look for the evening. Matte neutrals work well for those brides who don’t wear a lot of make-up as they subtly enhance rather than change your appearance. They work well with all styles – offering the flexibility to build up strength of colour to match the gown, formality of the occasion and time of day.
RELAXED, UNDONE HAIR
Most brides are opting for very natural hair – nothing too structured or perfectly in place. While relaxed ‘up dos’ are still popular and look very effective, a key trend we are noticing is a move towards hair down. Many brides we’re working with now are requesting their hair long and natural and embracing those centre partings that have become such a feature of designer runway shows. Waves are also very popular for 2017, and we’re also seeing a more relaxed curl. Braids remain popular, but the look is relaxed, with styles such as the fishtail. While brides always have to consider the structure and neckline of the dress, the relaxed hair look works with the current trend for simpler and two-piece dresses and always works brilliantly with more boho styles.
STATEMENT HAIR ACCESSORIES
With the hallmark of 2017 being simple elegance, we are seeing a bit of drama introduced through a statement hair accessory. From flower headpieces to crystal combs – these elements can work with all bridal styles. We’ve incorporated several ideas into our 2017 lookbooks to show brides the many different looks that can be achieved. We think they are a great way to add interest to an ultra-simple dress or add a glamorous point of focus at the hairline to complement an intricate lace or textured gown. WEDDINGS BEAUTY LOOKS the two. Some include elements such as yoga and dance, but the most popular session at bePilates is the Reformer Full Body Flow, a class where you focus on muscle tone, balance and posture. Jenny says that even one session of pilates will make you feel more body aware, and it doesn’t take long before you feel the difference in strengthened abdominals, muscle tone and stance – even feet and lower legs get a boost. With one or two months to the wedding – three or four sessions a week will be transformative. “Many of our clients have busy lives and when they get to our studio they are away from that, with time to clear their minds. Joseph Pilates designed exercises that make us focus on one thing at a time. That can be a great way to reduce stress and just enjoy the simple pleasure of movement,” says Jenny. * bePilates, 78a Chiltern Street, W1; be-pilates.co.uk
Perfect Posture
Known for its ability to improve posture, pilates is the red-carpet goers’ secret weapon. Jenny Cottrell of bePilates gives her tips for developing your poise, core strength and general wellbeing
P
ilates has always been popular with dancers – giving that enviable lean-limbed look. But Jenny Cottrell, teacher at bePilates in Marylebone, says it’s also hugely popular among celebrities. She says: “When you see celebrities standing with impeccable poise on the red carpet, very often you’ll find that they are pilates devotees”. And this is where it can help the bride to be – about to undergo their own redcarpet moment – because if you talk to any bridal designer they will tell you how important posture can be to the line and fit of a wedding gown. So standing tall is one sure-fire way to improve your confidence and poise on your wedding day. Jenny says that pilates literally changed her life. Like bePilates’ founder Dawne Likhodedova, she took it up after

a serious injury and it not only helped her regain fitness but also find a new calling as a teacher. She says: “Pilates is all about smart, precise movements that help to build strong body foundations – like building a house. As Joseph Pilates said, we learn through movement and movement heals”. The bePilates Marylebone studio is equipped with a dizzying array of exercise kit – from the simple floormat to barre, jumpboard and Reformer equipment – but Jenny is quick to point out that pilates is an exercise that you take at your own pace. Clients are all ages and the studio team give one-toone support: “Most of us have a few kinks in our bodies and exercises can be adapted to ensure they are safe, rewarding and ideal for you. Pilates is never about punishing the body!” Sessions can be in small groups or one-to-one, and often clients combine

DIRECTOR OF LEADING INTERNATIONAL EVENTS, PARTY AND WEDDING COMPANY LILLINGSTON lillingston .co.uk
We want to create a themed wedding that strikes the right balance between originality and formality as we have older guests in the mix who need to feel comfortable. What would you advise? eddings have become more and more elaborate over the years and there is a greater emphasis on the party, so most guests are very comfortable with a theme. The theme can be as developed as you like, but the best way to ensure it works is to stay focused on elements you need – bar, seating, food, and so on – and theme those rather than introducing props and extras that don’t have a clear purpose. Make the theme something that expresses your personality – it’s your day and will be most memorable if it chimes with the things that people associate with you. In our experience, it works well to keep the main format traditional – by that I mean stick to the drinks, dinner, dancing order that people are used to at weddings – and then make each part as personal as possible. It is also a good idea to ensure you cover off the five senses for each stage – visual and fragrant elements such as candles and flowers, sound with good music, taste with delicious food and drink, and tactile features such as comfortable seating or lounging areas. Everyone will welcome surprise elements if the main component parts of the day are familiar. And as long as you have ensured the oldest and youngest guests are catered for, everyone else can relax and enjoy the party.

We want a centrepiece at our wedding but we don’t want the traditional wedding cake because my partner doesn’t like it. What would you recommend? am biased, but I would certainly consider a croquembouche, which is a wedding speciality in my native France and something we make for lots of celebrations. We don’t touch traditional wedding cakes, but like to think we are masters of French alternatives – we’ve just won the Craft Baking Award at the BIA, which are like the Oscars for baking. Traditionally a croquembouche is a tower of profiteroles, with each choux bun filled with custard and a topping of spun sugar, chocolate or caramel. We make lots of bespoke alternatives. For instance, recently we created a tower using éclairs rather than profiteroles, and we can also make them with macarons. If you opt for the profiterole version, we recommend allowing for three per guest. To add more theatre to the occasion, you could have the croquembouche assembled on site. It’s a wonderful way to get guests involved in a bit of theatre – children especially love to help. Towards the end of building the tower we put up a curtain to finish off the decoration. Then the curtain is removed for the ‘big reveal’. We also make other lighter cakes and desserts – including our signature Belle Époque, which I designed for my then wife-to-be 15 years ago to impress her. It’s an orange-infused crème brulée centre coated in Valhrona dark chocolate mousse, with chocolate sponge and praline.

We’re planning a December wedding, but I want flowers that feel sophisticated, rather than using the typical festive colours and themes. I’m not keen on rich reds and greens and don’t want my wedding to turn into just another Christmas party. What would you suggest? or a sophisticated winter wedding we would normally tend to avoid the traditional Christmas colour palette of whites, greens and reds, but there are plenty of other options to consider and you can keep things very subtle or add dramatic focal points. We would suggest that when it comes to selecting the colour scheme, you think about the flowers that you love in dayto-day life. Don’t be afraid to choose a favourite flower that perhaps doesn’t emanate Christmas or winter. For instance, a beautiful blush rose (my personal favourite), is often associated with early spring, but can be the perfect place to start for your bouquet and arrangements. It is also a good choice for creating a luxury atmosphere at a winter gathering. The festive element can still be added in a restrained way without becoming overwhelming once you have decided on your overall theme and colours. For instance, you could incorporate statement garlands and tablesettings using seasonal foliage, decorative gold pine cones, and silk ribbon. Containers are also important for setting the scene and a very good way to add subtle drama and a celebratory atmosphere – especially if you choose crystal, gold or silver tones.

rides often worry that if they choose the dress too early, they won’t be at their target shape, but all our dresses – both our London exclusives and boutique ranges – are made in our workshop in Taunton, so fittings happen close to the wedding. I still advise brides to plan early – nine to twelve months is ideal. This gives space to plan and is especially useful if we are working with unusual fabrics or a specialist techniques. Not every bride plans so far in advance and we help many create their dream dress over a shorter time period. While going-away outfits no longer seem to exist, the extra dress for pre or post ceremony event (or both) is now popular. A smart alternative that we also love to create is one gown to take you from wedding to party with a few small adjustments. We’ve always designed occasion as well as wedding gowns, so moving into a bigger store just down the road enables us to showcase a much bigger range. This includes smart but non-traditional mother of the bride outfits. Emmy London is moving into our current address – we work closely together so it will be lovely to be neighbours.

PICK YOUR PRESENTS
Stuck on the wedding presents? Here’s what the experts say other couples are choosing right now – and from bikes to barbecues, you are spoiled for choice
W
hile wedding trends may come and go, most of us – whatever ‘stuff ’ we’ve accumulated as singletons or partners – do like to start married life with some brand new objects we’ve chosen together. So it’s little wonder that the wedding gift list remains such a popular fi xture of planning for a wedding. Prezola says that newlyweds are still keen to entertain guests, so dinnerware and bar items remain top items on the wishlist. But despite the vast choice it offers from leading brands such as Habitat, Heal’s, Sophie Conran and Jamie Oliver, the most popular dinnerware range at Prezola is a timeless white stoneware dinner set from The White Company – perfect for everyday and smart enough for special occasions. The Wedding Shop says that traditional products on its impressive list of brands – the Le Creuset casserole, KitchenAid mixer, designer decanter or new towels
and bedlinen – remain firm favourites. These are classics that not only stand the test of time but also give you the chance to refresh the look of your home. As you will have guests with different budgets – or some who may have travelled at some expense to your wedding – it’s always a good idea to include as wide a mix of price points as possible. Both The Wedding Shop and Prezola can offer advice on ensuring a well-balanced list, both on price points and themes – with advice on new season’s colours and trends so you don’t choose a white elephant (dark green accessories are Prezola’s hot tip for homes right now). And don’t neglect the pleasure of timeless everyday items that will remind you of the giver and your wedding – the perfectly proportioned vase or summer-evening stalwart barbecue. It does appear couples are becoming increasingly bold in their choices – not afraid to go ‘off piste’ if there’s something they really want. At The
101 Weddings_Sep16_Wedding List.indd 101
Wedding Shop – which has both an online service and showrooms across the UK, including Selfridges stores – there’s the option to choose an item not on its current list and it will be added on a bespoke basis. Both our experts also report the increasing popularity of alternatives to domestic objects. At Prezola, couples have increasingly been adding experiences to the list – everything from Red Letter Days to Virgin Balloon Flights. These can be a great add-on for the honeymoon, or something to look forward to on your returnr. Meanwhile, The Wedding Shop lets you create a personalised fund so that you can
continue to indulge your passion – be it a kitty for cinema tickets or for festivals. The message is – don’t be afraid to do different. Guests will enjoy buying something that matches your personality and theirs. Gifts are fun to give but enchanting to receive – this is one of the few opportunities in life to choose what we really, really want. * Prezola; prezola.com. The Wedding Shop; weddingshop.com

But he does advise you to keep essentials in mind: "You still have to ensure that all of the details your guests need to know are included”. There are infinite possibilities to be creative with colour in the seasons when lush garden blooms are not so abundant. Here, three top florists share their ideas
N B F LOW E R S For a spring wedding at The Berkeley, NB Flowers created a nature-inspired atmosphere – redolent of a woodland glade. Tall birch trees were ranged round the room and illuminated with pea lights. For the tables, lights were added to blossom branches in tall fluted vases. Smaller crystal and barkcovered vases contained emerging bulbs and early spring blooms, including narcissi, ranunculus, parrot tulips, ferns and grape hyacinths. nbflowers.co.uk

For this December wedding in the Scottish Highlands, Wild at Heart designed arrangements using soft blush tones with hints of sage in foliage – a palette often associated with early spring. To give a nod to the festive period, the team accessorised arrangements and table settings with pheasant feathers, gold pine cones and lavish silk ribbons. With lots of crystal hurricane vases and candles, it became a dramatic evening wedding setting. wildatheart.com
At this wedding on the south coast, Blue Sky Flowers were tasked with bringing the outdoors in. Fragrant potted herbs such as rosemary, sage and thyme – along with jasmine and hyacinth – sat among vases of cut flowers. Olive and eucalyptus foliage hung above the wedding tables like the boughs of a tree in the Tuscan countryside, creating a calm and restful atmosphere. Photo: Claire Graham. blueskyflowers.co.uk

TIPS FOR SAVVY SALE SHOPPING 1 Do your research. You need to have an idea of the style of gowns, and the designers you like. Check out designers stocked at the boutique and shortlist the names you like. 2 Don’t expect all sizes and options at special events; you might only find one size in each gown at a sample sale. 3 Do go prepared – wear the right underwear to try on a white dress and take a method of payment so you can secure the dress there and then. 4 Don’t take a crowd. Pre-booking is essential for sale shopping and usually only one or two guests are welcome. 5 Do go if you love a bargain and don’t mind a busy atmosphere. Don’t even think about it if you are indecisive or just starting out on your journey to find the right dress. A boutique appointment or trunk show is a far better bet if you want space, time and lots of options.

HAVE A GUEST BOOK
Once a wedding gets going, guests usually have plenty to say, but in the early stages you may be the only shared ground. This is especially true if you are grouping singles, people from your past, those who invited you to their weddings, and so on. Enter the guest book. GET A PHOTO BOOTH
Photo booths have become wildly popular at weddings – and for very good reason. Young and old, strangers and friends, will happily squeeze in together and get their photos taken in a silly hat or mask. Since one of the chief pleasures of your wedding day is hearing how much fun other people had, this is a good way to see photo evidence. Megabooth offers booths built inside a vintage Mini Cooper and London taxis,

But it is not just the grandeur of spaces, but the opportunities for fine dining that make it a great choice for central London celebrations. Menus are created in collaboration with Chez Roux, and with the focus you would expect on luxe ingredients, seasonality and stylish presentation. eaham Hall in County Durham is one of those magical hotels that attracts rave reviews from everyone who visits. While the property is historic, luxury rooms, a fabulous spa and a fair few quirky and funky touches (the large elephant in the spa, for instance), make it a wonderful choice for either a luxury break or a wedding. Located right on the coast at Seaham, and the place chosen by Lord Byron to get hitched, it hosts celebrations of all shapes and sizes and the team you can call on includes the executive chef and a personal wedding co-ordinator to help you design a unique bespoke event. here’s something magical about journeying to a small island and, while Greece has plenty to choose from, Skiathos has exactly the right dimensions for a chillout honeymoon. Located in the Sporades archipelago, off Greece’s east coast, it’s diminutive – measuring around seven miles from north to south – making it easy to explore if you can tear yourself away from the beach. And, of course, beaches are what draw most visitors to Greece. Even with so much choice, Skiathos – with mile upon mile of unspoilt sand and clear blue waters – is a standout destination. As it has direct absolutely-weddings.co.uk

WEDDINGS LUXURY TRAVEL fl ights from UK airports, it’s also the perfect fly and flop destination. We have chosen a two-centre break with Santikos Hotels, a family-owned hotel group on the island, beginning in the hub of the island's Skiathos town before heading down to Agia Paraskevi. The five-star Aegean Suites Hotel, our fi rst port of call, is nestled in the hills outside Skiathos town. Just 20 suites make this boutique hotel a great base where you can take things at your own pace. The rooms are large and comfortable – contemporary in style and without fuss – ours has an outside terrace with a private jacuzzi and great views of the Aegean. In fact, the whole focus here is on downtime, with three restaurants, plus an array of spa and wellness treatments – from YOGAaqua to hiking. If beach is your thing, it’s only a short stroll from the pool to pristine sand. Personal service is a big feature of all Santikos Hotels, and the 24-hour concierge service here can organise

everything from open-air theatre at the Bourtzi, to a private boat trip on a deserted beach and the best seats at the Windmill restaurant. Skiathos town still has remnants of the island’s boatbuilding industry in the shape of a dry dock, although these days you are more likely to see smart yachts in the harbour than the traditional caiques the island was renowned for. If you venture out to explore, it’s well worth checking out Evangelistrías monastery, a short taxi ride away, where the fi rst Greek flag was stitched and unfurled in 1807. The small on-site museum charts the struggle for independence. At the wild northern tip of the island, Kástro is the island’s original settlement. Once fortified against pirate marauders, it was abandoned in favour of Skiathos town in the 18th century and now ruined churches and a gatehouse are all that remain. After a few days of sun and exploring, we move on to the Princess Hotel, another five-star property and located right on Agia Paraskevi. It’s still a short hop by local bus or taxi to the town, but the chief draw here is the fantastic ocean location, offering watersports against a peaceful pine-clad backdrop. While it’s larger than the Aegean, with over 100 rooms, it still feels intimate and with lots of personal touches. This is a popular wedding spot and it’s not hard to see why with its pristine beach setting. There’s a smart casual dress code at any of the hotel’s four restaurants. Our favourite is the all-white taverna-style PR Ammos right on the beach (also the top spot for wedding feasts). As we gorge on fabulous seafood and watch the sun go down we conclude that if you’re looking for the classic Greek idyll to celebrate with friends or chill à deux, then this is probably it. here’s nothing more romantic than a winter break; days spent roaming the powdered mountains and evenings spent by the fire in a wooden chalet. Snowed in? Even better, because Morgan Jupe’s chalets are a place where luxury meets home in one of the world’s most desirable ski locations. With French cafes, bars and brasseries, and an intimate village vibe, this is the perfect post-wedding wonderland for couples seeking out a combination of snow and serenity. For a true winter honeymoon, you want to see snow, and lots of it Ω whether you’re a skier, a snowboarder or you just like the idea of cosying up by a roaring fire in the mountains. There’s no pressure to hit the slopes here, and there’s plenty of entertainment for honeymooners who wish to explore the area.

WEDDINGS LUXURY TRAVEL
The journey from London to Morzine is easy; often a rarity for ski holidays. With a 90-minute flight and the same transfer time, you can be checked into your chalet and ready to hit the slopes in under four hours. Morzine is set within the Portes du Soleil, a vast area of skiing close to the Swiss border. It’s an area of white tranquility, where the pistes are left relatively quiet for skiers and boarders to explore. The area has so much to offer off-piste too Ω suiting me perfectly. While my partner heads up the mountain for a day of skiing, I wrap myself in fur blankets, enjoying a mulled wine as skiers fly by. From Les Gets, across to Morzine and up towards Avoriaz, the immediate skiing area is packed with après-ski opportunities and quaint cafes on and off-piste. So if you’re hoping to combine skiing with some serious downtime, or nightlife, you’ll be pleased to find an array of eateries, quirky cafes and bars over every mountain top. Morzine offers a perfect marriage of snow topped mountains and French village charm. It's a fascinating resort,
retaining much of its heritage. It’s also unpretentious yet embodies everything you’d expect from a classic ski resort – including serious sporting opportunities because the Portes du Soleil offers more than 650 km of marked pistes. Morzine is characterised by its chic wooden chalets and its laid-back vibe, and in keeping with that theme, our home for the week is Morgan Jupe’s Chalet Chardon, nestled part way up the winding road heading towards the pistes. A safe haven beneath the slopes for up to nine guests Ω or the perfect luxe retreat for couples and honeymooners. Chalet Chardon is a tranquil hideaway set in the mountains. If unwinding in the hot tub isn’t for you, the chalet’s unspoilt ski-in-ski-out position means you can head to the private boot room where your boots have been heated, pop on your skis and head up the mountains straight after breakfast. In the chalet itself, you’ll find twinkling candles, fairy lights and love-heart decorations in every nook and cranny. It’s cosy, it’s intimate, but it’s also chic. A seriously charming home from home, where you won’t feel guilty for spending the day inside, with the doors locked and the fire roaring. Each room follows a similar theme, but with unique touches and furnishings and breathtaking views across the valley. Towards the back of the property you’ll see skiers soaring through the trees. On arrival, the space is set out for us with sweet treats and a full bar offering spirits, soft drinks and a carefully selected wine list. We meet with our chalet host and our chef for the week, who talk us
through the menu, any requests we might have and advice on the local area and the skiing. They are very accommodating and it's not long before they are friends. Glass of champagne in hand, we drink a toast to our winter retreat in the mountains. The menu changes on a daily basis, with the choice of a cooked or continental breakfast, an afternoon tea and a threecourse evening meal with pre-dinner champagne and canapés. The dinner is prepared with local produce in mind, tailored to suit our palate. Each course is served with a paired wine, an exclusive offering by Morgan Jupe. Jess and Josh, the company founders, who actually met out on a ski season, are passionate about their wine selection and work very closely with the chefs to offer the very best match. This is a personalised service from start to finish, every touch point feels authentic and specialist.
Morzine offers a perfect marriage of snow topped mountains & French village charm The Defender shuttle service is also something exclusive to Morgan Jupe. Two Land Rover Defenders are available at your every beck and call to pick you up and drop you off at your preferred skiing and dining destinations across the Portes du Soleil. Covering everything from clearing the drive in the morning, to carrying your skis and tackling the snow-stacked roads, the drivers will do everything to ensure you sit back and relax as you are whisked away to the ski lift. For those who want to head out for dinner, the village is just a fifteen minute stroll. On the staff day off, I’d recommend reserving a table at L’Etale, a restaurant located at the foot of the Pleney lift. The wide-ranging menu includes local specialities such as fondue, raclette and hot stone main courses cooked at your table. Whether seeking out the black runs, beginning on the tree-lined blues, exploring the quaint shops, relaxing in the hot tub or supping wine by the fire, Morzine ticks all the boxes for romance and Alpine charm. With a discreet and stunning setting, fine dining and the perfect amount of adventure and luxury on hand, Jess and Josh at Morgan Jupe have your winter honeymoon covered. while my companion samples a perfect rare steak from the extensive oak charcoal grill menu. The flavours are bold and fresh with some unusual sweet and savoury pairings – a touch of exoticism – not at all heavy. Soups are on the menu here, as with every other Budapest restaurant. It’s a 365-day dish for hungry Hungarians and well worth sampling, whatever the temperature, because it is always made with love. The desserts are divine and we share an ice cream and sorbet selection. While our trip is for R&R rather than sightseeing, we do make forays to the Buda side for a visit to the Cave Church and a wander along the riverbank. We also check out the indoor market on the Pest side – the place to find everything from paprika and salamis to buffaloskin handbags. Finally, since no trip to Budapest is complete without at least one thermal baths session, we talk to the charming and all-knowing concierge. He says that every one on the Gresham Palace concierge team has a personal favourite, so we opt for the Széchenyi since it’s close by and among his recommendations. And, nice touch this, we pop back to reserve our taxi and pick up the courtesy fluffy Gresham Palace towels and slippers to make our thermal spa session a truly immersive home from home.

eorgie and Ed knew they wanted to marry abroad and, because Ed had lived and studied in Spain, this became their fi rst choice. They researched venues across the country and knew they had struck gold when they found Hacienda de San Rafael. Georgie says: “We both felt it suited what we wanted for our wedding day. The wine and food, along with so many other elements, were out of this world and when we went on a recce trip we made up our minds straight away”. Once an olive-growing estate, this beautiful 18th-century hacienda close to Seville has been restored as a traditional country hideaway with contemporary luxury comforts. As it’s set in five-acres of beautiful gardens, with three swimming pools and in-house chefs, it can also comfortably accommodate a wedding crowd. Having chosen this idyllic setting, there was very little dressing required and Georgie and Ed wanted the bold palette of the Spanish summertime to be

a key part of their day. Georgie explains: “The venue had so many beautiful flowers and plants that we wanted to keep it simple in terms of colours and chose white flower arrangements. Our local florists – Flores Bucaro Sevilla – were fantastic”. Georgie chose an elegant wedding gown from the Temperley London bridal collection. Featuring a drop waist and delicate white tracery pattern, with soft gold flowers on the bodice and skirt, it

suited the theme perfectly. Her four bridesmaids – two in rich orange and two in pale blue – brought bolder colour to the wedding party. Simple bouquets adhered to the mainly white theme but with flashes of sunshine shades. The whole theme of the day was laid-back, but with a defi nite nod to local Andalusian traditions. Georgie says: “We had Spanish elements throughout the wedding – jambon, a churros and chocolate cart and tiles from Seville for table place names.” The simple service in the sunshine concluded with a confetti shower of olive leaves for the couple – a lovely touch very much in keeping with tradition. The hacienda came into its own for the after party, offering ample space for relaxed drinks round the pool and an evening wedding feast that went on into the small hours. Twinkling lights were dotted through the trees, with olive sprigs used to decorate the white chairs and as a motif for placesettings. New Year’s Eve wedding is a double celebration, and when Yuji and Stephen were looking for the right venue for their party to end all parties, they had a very particular idea in mind. Yuji says: “Our theme was best summed up as ‘Paris of the East, in London’. I had been inspired by images of 1920s-1930s Shanghai – the city where I was born – although I was raised in the southern United States”. While neither Yuji nor Stephen have roots in London, it became the natural choice because it’s the city they now call home. Yuji says: “It was also a convenient location for our family and friends, who are fairly spread out among the US, UK/Europe, Middle East and Asia. We had also considered a vineyard outside Charlottesville, Virginia, which is the city where I went to law school and Asia, where we met”. With many family and friends journeying to London to celebrate with them, the couple also held an intimate celebration party in Shanghai for those who couldn’t make it a month before the ceremony. The design of Banking Hall, which overlooks the Bank of England, was perfect for scene setting. Yuji says: “Shanghai used to be known as ‘the Paris of the East, the New York of the West’ and the glamorous Art Deco architecture of Banking Hall is reminiscent of the buildings along the Bund in Shanghai. It provided the perfect backdrop to set the scene”. Yuji and Stephen loved the Main Hall, complete with sweeping absolutely-weddings.co.uk

For their sumptuous New Year’s Eve wedding in London’s Banking Hall, Yuji and Stephen created a theme inspired by the elegance of old Shanghai Photography:

While the Main Hall’s grand dimensions were ideal for the ceremony and evening party, they decided to use the space upstairs for a champagne and canapés reception with live acoustic band while the hall was being transformed from formal to evening party setting. The fi nal decider was the in-house catering team – Yuji describes them as “awesome”. Having found the perfect party venue, the rest of the details fell into place. Yuji happened across an elegant Phillip Lim pale ivory gown that had a distinctly 1930s vibe with its sleek lines and cape-effect neckline and sleeves. Her bridesmaids made their own choices, opting for shades ranging from champagne and nude to gold and dusty rose. The bride carried an all-white bouquet of roses and ranunculus and fi nished off her outfit with decadent blue Jimmy Choo strappy heels. Yuji says: “My Phillip Lim gown was an impulse buy from Net-a-Porter and my mother, a former tailor, helped me to hem it. My bridesmaids all chose their own dresses and these fitted the theme so it all came together beautifully”. While the Banking Hall needed very little dressing, Yuji and Stephen did introduce carefully chosen details. “We accented the fairly neutral background with pops of crimson, which is the

was special to us because when we were living apart for a year for work (Stephen in Dubai, me in London) some of the lyrics helped to get us through tough times. We had agreed that we would pretend we were dancing in our living room, and we just had the most fun with it.” Yuji and Stephen also loved the wedding feast. “When we fi rst started dating, our go-to favourite meals were the melanzane alla parmigiana from Mondo Mio and the steak frites at Les Bouchons Rive Gauche, both in Singapore. The chef was able to re-create both of these favorites to perfection.” This unique wedding turned into a wonderful party where Yuji and Stephen could celebrate two auspicious beginnings – their new life together and a new year. Yuji says: “To borrow from the Bard: ‘to thine own self be true’. traditional good-luck colour for Chinese weddings. All the male members of the wedding party wore navy lounge suits with red ties to add an extra colour dimension”. The crimson menus were created by Yuji and designed as fortune tellers that opened up to reveal each course. There was also a glamorous flash of gold in the traditional French croquembouche wedding cake. Yuji says: “It glittered the whole evening on the sweeping staircase”. The high point of the day was the fi rst dance. Yuji says: “That’s when the more stressful elements of the day were behind us. Our song was Lost Stars by Adam Levine, which

hen Sneha and Farhaan began searching for a wedding venue they weren’t sure what they wanted, but the minute they visited Kew Gardens, they knew they had found the right place. Sneha says: “The venue had been something we struggled with. We weren’t sure what we were looking for so we spread our search to manor houses, halls and hotels – we must have looked at practically every venue in the south east. It wasn’t until we went to Kew that we felt this is where it can happen”. The UNESCO World Heritage Site has a variety of fabulous spaces and the couple chose Kew’s Nash Conservatory for their service and the 18th-century Orangery for the reception. With these light-fi lled backdrops, they were able to create an elegant and simple theme. Sneha says: “There had to be a nod to our Asian backgrounds, but with a contemporary feel”. The lush flowers were created by Sophie King of The Bloomery, Twickenham, who combined traditional old roses and trailing
Seeing Sneha in her wedding dress was an amazing moment I will never forget carnations with late-summer exotics such as crocosmia, red hot pokers and dahlias. The same blending of traditions was in evidence for wedding entertainment, which included both mellow saxophone music and, later on, Indian dhol drummers from Evo Entertainment. For Sneha and Farhaan, a high point of the day was the service. Sneha says: “There is one moment that I hold very close to me – the

moment I saw Farhaan at the end of the aisle. I was very nervous before that for many reasons – tripping over my high heels, my hair coming undone, and so on. I know it sounds super cheesy, but as soon as I saw him, it’s like nothing else mattered. I literally only remember seeing him, and having the biggest sense of relief – like all the weight on my shoulders had just lifted away”. Farhaan says: “Waiting at the end of the aisle felt like an eternity but when the music started and I managed to get a peek at Sneha past all our friends and family I realised that this was it! Seeing her in her wedding dress was an amazing moment I will never forget. Our fi rst dance and then seeing all our friends and family on the dance floor was another special moment – especially with our traditional Indian drummers playing along to the music." suppliers on a personal level, since they play a part in ensuring what you planned for your day comes together. The couple felt hugely supported by their team. Sneha says: “Kat Halls from Kew was an absolute star on the day – she really helped me to keep calm and made sure everything ran smoothly. Natalie Danielle my hair and makeup artist also helped to keep me sane. And our photographers Daria and Marek from Plenty to Declare – hanging out with them was like being with friends”.
Sneha and Farhaan also recommend getting involved yourselves. The wedding website they created became the place to share plans for the day with guests. Other personal touches the couple created together – tablecards, placesettings and activity packs for young guests – took time but were hugely satisfying. Sneha and Farhaan’s fi nal tip is to relax and go with the flow. Sneha says: “Before you know it, the day will be over, so enjoy it as much as you can – don’t worry too much about other things”. ◆

white Rolls-Royce won’t cut it if your soon-to-be’s uncle David has a prized collection of vintage vehicles. And so it was that Alice and David set forth on their wedding day in Boreham, Essex in the back of a perfectly polished 1956 Pickfords lorry. ALICE: There were other vehicles to choose from, but in the end David chose his favourite Susie (all his uncle's vehicles have names). Alice and David’s wedding was a moving day, as they were VIP deliveries in a buffed and gleaming vintage Pickfords lorry named Susie
started buffing and polishing her about a week before the wedding. All our guests loved it because Susie was parked outside the church and then his uncle drove us on to the reception in the back, with a short detour to go and visit my horse. In the end, David and I must have been driven about four miles in her. It wasn’t the best choice for my hair, but a great way to travel. We did have to swap sides so that David sat next to the exhaust because there was black smoke when the engine started – it did cross my mind that if I sat too close I might go up in flames!
BEN: This was a photographer’s gift – setting the tone for a really individual wedding. What you can’t grasp from the photo is just how high the back of the truck is. Alice and David had to use a ladder to climb in. I rode up in the front and was a little worried when David’s uncle first started the engine and smoke engulfed the cabin. He told me she just needed to warm up. It was a good fun ride, and it shows in the pictures we captured of Alice, David and Susie.
