ABSOLUTELY’S January issue highlights
Ilook back at photos of myself around 13 years and inwardly cringe. I was a fat kid, there's no escaping it, and there were no excuses – I was happy, not bullied, I just liked to eat food. And generally it was food that was not particularly healthy. I vividly remember having my school dinner, then coming home at 3pm and eating a couple of corned beef sandwiches. And I made my mum's life hell by refusing to deviate from the same food time and time again.
I am not too sure what inspired me to change. I started playing football around 15 and I guess I wanted to be the best I could be, so I started to get into fitness. I used to run up and down the living room, which looking back seems ridiculous, but within a year I was by far and away the fittest player in my team.
5
Now in my mid-40s, that fitness bug has remained, even if I no longer step on the football pitch. I have a big appetite, still, but balance it out with the right foods and doing plenty of exercise. In short, it shows anyone can change their ways if they put their mind to it, which is why our January health special is always a good one to get inspired by. Make it a happy 2025.

This is not a musical. Milton Jones is tone deaf and has no sense of rhythm, but at least he doesn’t make a song and dance about it. He has more important things to discuss. Jason Donovan heads to the Cli s Pavilion, Southend, this month in The Rocky Horror Show. Absolutely sits down with him to discuss a stage return, growing up and fishnet stockings
By RICHARD BARBER
Jason Donovan is making a much anticipated return to one of his most famous roles: playing Frank-NFurter in Richard O’Brien’s anarchic musical, The Rocky Horror Show. So, the question has to be: why? “In a nutshell,” he says, “I’m a fan. I love the show; I love the music; I love the character. I was touring my own show about five years ago and included Sweet Transvestite from Rocky as a key moment in my musical career. It went down a storm.”
He subsequently emailed producer Howard Panter saying that he’d read there was to be a 50th anniversary production of Rocky Horror and he’d love to be involved. And so it came to pass: first in Sydney and Melbourne and now via an extensive UK tour, which heads to Essex this month.
The Rocky Horror Show is a musical with music, lyrics and book by Richard O’Brien. A humorous tribute to various B movies associated with the science fiction and horror genres from the 1930s to the early 1960s, the musical tells the story of a newly engaged, clean-cut couple getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite scientist, Dr Frank-N-Furter, unveiling his
new creation, Rocky, a Frankenstein-style monster in the form of an artificially-made, fully-grown, physically perfect muscle man complete with blond hair and a tan.
The show was produced and directed by Jim Sharman. The original London production premièred at the Royal Court Theatre (Upstairs) on 19th June 1973. It later moved to several other locations in London and closed on 13th September 1980. The show ran for a total of 2,960 performances.
On the 50th anniversary of the musical in 2023, it is said the production had been performed in 20 di erent languages and seen by 30 million people globally.
He’s the same performer, but how does Jason feel about tackling the role over 25 years later? “I don’t feel uncomfortable playing Frank at 56 –and, of course, I have personal reasons for being grateful to the show.”
The stage manager on that late 90s touring production was a young woman called Angela Malloch. “I’d be backstage waiting to go on,” recalls Jason, “and I’d get chatting to Ange.” The blossoming friendship turned into romance, but the relationship hit the bu ers.
Shortly afterwards, Angela found out she was pregnant. It was ultimatum time. “If the relationship had any chance of working,
she told me, and if I was going to have any involvement in the life of our child, I would have to give up the self-indulgent hedonistic lifestyle of the 90s and take greater control of my life. And I did.”
It was a major turning point in his life and the beginning of a relationship – the couple finally married in 2008 – that has stood him in good stead from that day to this. The couple have three children: Jemma is 24 and an actress; 23-year-old Zac is a TV producer in Australia and Molly, 13, is still at school.
In the meantime, their father has graduated from small-screen fame as Scott in the long-running Australian soap, Neighbours, to chart-topping pop stardom and now, among much else, as a stalwart of musical and straight theatre in a diverse number of productions. He played Joseph in the original production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (returning as Pharaoh in the 2019 revival and subsequently on tour). He was in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts, has had two stabs at playing drag artist Mitzi in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, he also played music mogul Sam Phillips in Million Dollar Quartet, the demon barber
of Fleet Street himself in Sweeney Todd and Lionel Logue in The King’s Speech
But it is Dr Frank-N-Furter who occupies a special place in his heart. “One of the reasons I love Rocky is because it’s a short show.” And nor is he joking. “It says everything it needs to say and nothing more. There’s no unnecessary padding. It means nobody gets bored and you leave them wanting more.”
Fine but, hand on heart, what’s it like climbing into those fishnet stockings and high heels seven times a week? “In many ways, very easy, I put on the costume and there’s Frank all over again. I’m in touch with my feminine side, but I come from a masculine sensibility. The character embraces both sides of me: a strength and a vulnerability as well as danger and denial.
“Look, I come to the role as an actor,” he adds. “I always dreamed of fronting a rock band and this is about as close as I’ve got. When I put on those high heels, I
become that rock ‘n’ roll star. It makes me feel powerful, tall, in charge. And audiences love it. As I look out from the stage, I see a beautiful landscape of people wearing outrageous costumes. It’s not hard to see why: in many ways, Rocky is panto for adults. The costumes are just as much a part of the show as the characters and the music.”
All right, but what about the wear and tear on his back? He laughs. “I spend a lot more time in physio these days, something I’ve put in as an appendix in my contract! I’m in my mid-50s. I’m aware of having to look after myself.”
He is sensible about his eating regime. “Within reason but then I’m lucky. I seem to burn a lot of fat naturally. Trouble is, you get to my age and you’re in sniper’s alley: increasingly, you’re dodging a lot of bullets. There’s a bit of arthritis here, deteriorating eyesight there. If I take o my glasses, I can’t see whether the bottle contains shampoo or conditioner!” he laughs.
“Although my vocals were never my strongest point back in the day, since Joseph, I have worked really hard and through 30 years of strengthening my vocal cords –
they’re a muscle like anything else – I’ve become a better singer. Rocky now plays to my strengths, less musical theatre, more edgy, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll. More me really!”
Touring at any age is demanding and Jason is about to embark on a fairly punishing schedule, but he makes light of it. “On tour, I wake up a little later; there are no domestic chores to tackle – no trimming the ivy or doing the washing. And I’m a seasoned professional when it comes to locating any M&S or Waitrose.
“I do try and get home at weekends, though, and not agree to more than three or four weeks away at a stretch. But if I want to play Frank – and I do – I’ve got to travel. It comes with the territory.”
And after Rocky? “I’ve got my Doin’ Fine 25 tour – that’s 35 concerts across the UK and Ireland. It’s a greatest hits show, a celebration of 35 years of work.”
For now, though, all his concentration is on bringing Frank-N-Furter back to life, both for his own satisfaction and that of his inexhaustible audience. “I’ve reached a point of great contentment,” says Jason. “As long as I have my family and my health, as long as I have a good life/work balance, I’m happy. I like to think I work to live, not the other way around.”

Dr Nyla Raja looks into the aesthetics trends we can expect to see in 2025
Ahighly respected and much sought after skin specialist and cosmetic dermatology GP, Dr Nyla Raja has practiced medicine for over 20 years and has personally delivered over 200,000 treatments with exceptional results. Trusted by television personalities, well-known celebrity figures and some of the UK’s most familiar faces, she is considered to be one of the top cosmetic doctors in the country. Here she gives her insight into the top skincare and aesthetics trends to watch in 2025.
Dr Nyla says: “As we move into 2025, the world of aesthetics and skincare will continue to evolve. It’s not just about the aesthetic outcome anymore, but a holistic approach to maintaining skin health and longevity. Patients are looking for advanced, non-invasive treatments that enhance natural beauty and focus on long-term skin wellness. Below are some of the biggest trends in 2025.”
2025 will be all about 'undetectable beauty', where aesthetic treatments enhance your natural features without being visibly noticeable. The desire for subtle, natural-looking enhancements is at an all-time high. Patients are increasingly leaning towards procedures that deliver natural, 'undetectable' results. They want to look refreshed, not altered.Microlifting, skin tightening treatments, and injectables will focus on enhancing natural contours and improving skin tone.
Younger generations are increasingly focused on 'prejuvenation' – preventing the signs of ageing before they occur. Patients are looking for preventative treatments that preserve skin firmness and delay signs of ageing, without the need for more invasive interventions later on. Light peels, laser facials, and microinjectables will become key treatments.
We’re seeing incredible advancements in skintightening technologies. These treatments o er non-invasive, long-lasting solutions that help patients achieve firmer, more youthful skin without downtime. Treatments like our bespoke Transformation Facelift™ use advanced technologies to target deeper layers of the skin, lifting and firming without the need for invasive surgery. In just a few sessions, we can help restore volume and improve skin texture, leaving you with a smoother, more youthful appearance.
Additionally, our Transformation Bodylift targets stubborn fat in specific areas, to contour and reshape the body and build muscle for men and women. The treatment program combines di erent technologies bespoke to individual needs,
and leaves patients feeling empowered, sculpted, and ready to step out with confidence. The images below show one recent case study with fabulous results. Using a variety of innovative technologies, Tone & Tite therapy addresses all five key causes of cellulite. By combining radiofrequency and acoustic wave technology, the treatment plan works on both the superficial and deeper layers of the skin to improve tone and texture, delivering long-lasting results without downtime.

Essex’s Je Brazier on being an ambassador for Revive Active, hosting walks in the county and letting it all out
Q Why were you keen on becoming a Brand Ambassador for Revive Active?
A I really felt the brand aligned with my outlook to promoting holistic health, plus I love the products. I can’t imagine just drinking plain water now, I much prefer their flavours with the added benefit of all of the healthy ingredients. I also like how they are genuinely looking to inspire others to prioritise their mental and physical wellness.
Q Which of their products do you use and why?
A I aim to incorporate three key products into my daily routine. Revive Active’s comprehensive formula provides me with 26 vital nutrients for sustained energy, strengthened immunity and promoting cardiovascular health – and who doesn’t want that! By nourishing my body comprehensively, it enhances my overall vitality, ensuring I can thrive with my busy and active lifestyle, and I always feel like my energy is maintained throughout the whole day. To help support the demands of my active and physical lifestyle, Revive Active Joint Complex provides vital support for my joints, cartilage, bones and connective tissue while I’m cycling, walking, playing
football or enjoying a round of golf. Especially important now I’m 45!
I can’t emphasise enough how crucial good nutrition is for maintaining optimal mental wellbeing. I’ve come to understand that what I feed my body directly impacts my mind’s performance. Even just knowing that I take supplements makes me feel like I deserve good health, which helps me manifest more of the same.
As a life coach and mental health advocate, I understand the significance of cognitive wellness. Revive Active Mastermind is formulated to support your brain, mental performance and cognitive function, o ering the clarity I need to stay focused every day. I’m still able to whizz through my lists without giving in to distraction. Its blend of essential nutrients like Omega 3 DHA, Uridine and Choline is precisely what my brain needs to thrive. By adding it to my meditation ritual, I’ve noticed enhanced focus and mental clarity. Plus, the convenience of the powdered sachet mixed with water ensures I stay hydrated, hitting my daily water intake. Omega-3 fatty acids are the rockstars of the health world, playing a crucial role in keeping our minds sharp, our hearts healthy, and our bodies in tip-
top shape and now Revive Active o er Omega Active with an impressive 756mg of EPA and 504mg DHA per serving.
Q What did you not know about Revive Active that really impresses you?
A Revive Active’s super supplements only use premium ingredients in their most bioavailable (absorbable) form instead of cheaper, less e ective ingredients. This means that each product has a powerful combination of ingredients, scientifically formulated with no stimulants, no added colours, no ca eine, no additives or preservatives. It’s also safe and easy to “supplement stack” – so taking a number of Revive Active’s products in combination every day to help best support your wellbeing needs. It’s rare we find a health product we trust, but I certainly have so I’m keeping it part of my routine!
Q Have you always been interested in health and wellbeing, or was there a particular moment that inspired an interest in learning more?
A As someone who was fostered as a child and had other setbacks through my life, survival has been a lifelong focus, but my journey towards inner calm and healing began over a decade ago.
My journey into the world of meditation began some 15 years ago when a friend introduced me to the practice. Through the Foundation for International Spiritual Unfoldment (FISU), I learned the fundamentals of meditation and volunteered every Monday for three months to deepen my understanding.
I was taught how to meditate using various techniques and forms and these practices became my refuge during times of stress, o ering a way of healing without the need for extensive therapy, although I had that too!
For me, meditation became a way of accessing inner healing and experiencing a sense of liberation. It’s about healing from within, freeing yourself from the noise of the external world. When you’re in alignment with yourself, your outer appearance reflects that inner peace.
Q What would you say has been the biggest thing you have learnt that changed your life?
A That vulnerability is a strength not a weakness. I’m working on opening my heart up so I’m using it without fear and to its fullest capacity, and part of loving yourself is allowing yourself to be human, to feel the full menu of emotion without suppressing the feelings we would rather not experience.
Q What inspired you to launch PRJCT WLKS?
A As a mental health ambassador, in 2022 I started running Walk & Talk sessions in my home county of Essex, it’s a growing walking and wellness community. The aim was to encourage people to engage in nature and discuss their concerns in a nurturing environment with like-
“It's about healing from within and freeing yourself”
minded individuals. These sessions have flourished into a vibrant community, with fortnightly walks, gathering up to 100 walkers each time. I really hope to be able to expand this initiative nationwide.
Q Were you always aware of the natural beauty around you in Essex?
A I think you’re called to nature when you need it, but I have been lucky to live in the countryside around Matching Green for many years and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It just makes me feel peaceful to have some greenery around me.
Q How would you describe a typical walk?
A We talk over the plans for the route and welcome any newcomers to the family, we will often make stops to practice stillness and breath-work and also make time to participate in coaching practices in small groups designed to stimulate conversation. People enjoy walking shoulder to shoulder and often find that the safety of the group and healing nature of the environment we walk through gives them an opportunity to share and release.
Q As a mental health ambassador, what would be your advice to anyone who is really feeling down?
A Everyone is holding something, but very often the ones that fare better
with the constant juggle of life are still able to look at what’s good around them as well as wearing the weight of the challenge on their shoulders.
Go for a walk, read a book, slow down, journal, meditate, play, breath, sleep. The solutions usually come to us when we do enough of the above to give ourselves some respite from the constant focus we can often apply to the problem.
If we don’t ‘break state’ it’ll be hard to see what exists outside of that. Don’t worry you can leave the issue for a while, it’ll still be there when you get back to it, but you might just see it from a di erent angle.
Q What are your hopes for 2025?
A Over the next year, I’m aiming to expand the PRJCT WLKS, “meet up” to so many more places across the UK to help people connect with each other.

Immune hacks: fab or fad? The experts at The Natural Way take a closer look
The common cold is quite possibly the UK’s most common illness with statistics showing that most adults experience on average two to four colds a year, and children more still. Whether it’s Great Grandma Jean, your next-door neighbour or Google Almighty, we all know someone who has a theory on how to get rid of a cold. But just how valid are these pearls of wisdom?
Warmth is helpful, as your body is already trying to raise its temperature to break down the baddie with heat. However, saunas involve loss of fluid, which is bad for mucous membranes, which need to stay lubricated and flexible, especially when dealing with an extra load of phlegm. It’s quite likely that you will crawl out of the hotspot feeling debilitated and wrung out, rather than liberated from the infection.
Definitely don’t! Keep fresh air circulating regularly in your sickroom, but don’t try hurling yourself around a gym or forcing the pace with your Fitbit. Your energy is needed to counter the infection, and diverting it to power your muscles and heart
in a bout of exercise will leave you limp, and feeling even more worse for wear. Muscles feel weaker with an infection anyway, as protein is diverted to support immune activity. Be kind to your body and let your immune system do its job unhindered by extra demands.
This is an age-old remedy for anyone feeling the e ects of a heavy cold: headaches, congestion, a rattly chest, or the shivers. Putting your feet in hot water (around 37°C) will expand blood vessels, allowing blood to be drawn down from congested areas and potentially alleviating headaches and a sore chest. It’s also a simple way to balance your temperature, reducing
feverish highs, but warming a shivery low. Ten minutes’ emersion is plenty.
Few would be tempted to try this when feeling poorly, and that is the correct feeling: a higher body temperature makes an uninviting habitat for cold-causing viruses, so staying cosy is best. Having short blasts of cold water when uninfected is, however, a strategy for supporting health.
Not only is this a juicy fruit that aids hydration, it is also crammed with vitamins C and A, good for the immune system and for respiratory tract tissue.
Various foods have been mooted as suitable sock-stu ers, namely onion and garlic. The idea is that, when present next to the skin of the foot, raw sliced alliums will pull toxins out of the body. Now, whilst garlic and onion do definitely have antiviral properties when eaten, and the sulphide compounds they contain can be very helpful to our immune function, there is no evidence that wrapping them around your feet will do any good at all.
A ca eine charge is bound to help beat the infection fatigue, huh? No, no, no… Firstly, the fatigue is there to help you; you need to rest and divert energy to your immune
system, which is frenetically busy quelling the infection and healing damaged tissue. Secondly, dealing with the ca eine uses up nutrients that are much better utilised to fuel your immune cells, rather than flogging your weary muscles to rush you around. The post-ca eine slump will also make you feel far worse than before, so instead go for hot drinks that contain helpful ingredients such as lemon, ginger, or black elderberry.
Unless you develop a secondary bacterial infection as a result of a cold or flu, antibiotics should definitely not be your first thought when trying to shift a cold. The vast majority of colds and flu are viral in origin. When you use antibiotics for anything other than a bacterial infection, it won’t do you any good, but it will kill o the friendly bacteria in your gut, weakening your immune system for the future. In addition, the incorrect use of antibiotics allows bacteria to become more resistant. Over the years since antibiotics were first introduced, more and more resistant strains of bacteria have evolved, meaning the many antibiotics are now not working against the infections they used to slay.
Yes! There have been oodles of studies and papers into this helpful herbal – even the BBC weighed in a couple of years ago in their ‘The Truth About Boosting Your Immune System’, where they concluded there was reasonable evidence to support its use to prevent and treat symptoms of the common cold. There are several types of Echinacea, with Echinacea purpurea by far the most well-researched. We also know that this specific type of Echinacea can play a useful role in preventing the incidence of colds and flu, as well as reducing their severity and duration of symptoms. Echinaforce® Hot Drink with extracts of Black Elderberry can be especially warming at this time of the year and is registered for the relief of cold and flu symptoms.

An update from the world of fitness from Mick Rolton of Gym Design & Supply
Iam seeing a holistic approachamong my clientele now. Rather than just plain rest (doing nothing), active rest or LISS (Low-Intensity Steady State) cardio, yoga, meditation and stretching is being seen as just as important as High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).
The standard of barbells, dumbbells and cables in a gym has not changed, but I am seeing more using lower reps (less than 8) in their routines that maximises strength gains, improves tone significantly and avoids building significant muscle. More emphasis is now on multi-joint compound movements such as squats (rather than leg extensions), as this maximises calorie burn in less time. This is a very e ective mix with this holistic approach.
Far more females are using heavy weights than ever before, which is a truly wonderful trend to see. This is needed even more for females with age than males as this also helps protect bones and muscles optimising their functional mobility.
I am seeing more clients veering away from dedicated Peleton or Norditrack (iFit) cardio. The equipment is ok, but being stuck with
one fitness app only is starting to feel very limiting for them. This is especially relevant if there is more than one user in the family.
As with online TV subscriptions, people are utilising a number of them for versatility.
Whilst some are still using Peleton+ and iFit Apps on their own cardio, I see people using:
• For Strength – Stronglifts, Strong & Gymverse
• Cardio – ICG, Zwift, Kinomap, Rouvy
• Classes - Les Mills, Apple
“More emphasis is now on multijoint compound movements”
Because of this holistic change, people are wanting access to larger screens (ideally a large TV on the wall) for their workouts to help them be guided through on a cardio or holistic workout.
Cardio has to be versatile with access to a number of fitness Apps and not just one. Space is a premium, so people are looking at all-in-one machines that can o er a variety from one machine, like a half squat with cables (unlike most commercial gyms that o er only 1 to 2 exercises per machine).
A lot more e ort is going into home gym design these days as people want it to be their happy place and feel great walking into before they work out. Due to this, rather than just plain painted walls, we are seeing a lot more creativity such as inspiring messages on walls via stylish acrylics or lightboxes and beautiful cladding and mirrors.

Why Rock Mill Retreat could be the answer to improving your well-being in 2025
“The function of our entire metabolism is dependent on light”
Life organises around light. This theme is explored in various philosophical, scientific, and spiritual contexts, but how much of that natural light do we get round here? Certainly not enough for optimal (or even sub-optimal) functioning of our bodies. And a couple of weeks a year in the south of Spain is not going to fix that...
Theoretical biophisicist Dr Fritz Albert Popp concluded that the function of our entire metabolism is dependent on light. He introduced the concept of biophotons (ultra-weak photon emissions that are involved in cellular communication and regulation) that play a crucial role in maintaining health, and, potentially, even influencing genetic activity. For example, cancer could result from a breakdown in the coherent emission of biophotons. And how does one increase that coherent emission of biophotons in their sun-deprived cells? By consuming good quality, unprocessed foods, and by going outside in the sun (while exposing as much skin surface as possible), or by using photobiomodulation (red-light) therapy in the correct spectrum of light. When light interacts with an electron, it can move the electron to a di erent orbit
around the atom’s nucleus. This process is fundamental to all chemical reactions and, by extension, to life. However, only light with a certain wavelength, which corresponds to the energy needed, can cause this shift. The electron will only change orbits if the light provides exactly the right amount of energy. Other ways to increase the emissions of biophotons are physical exercise, meditation, mindfulness, as well as heat therapy (sauna).
Neurosurgeon Jack Kruse posits that light, particularly red and near-infrared, stimulates the mitochondria’s electron transport chain, leading to improved energy production at the cellular level. This is seen as critical for health optimisation and potentially reversing or mitigating chronic diseases. Likewise, and over ten years ago already, renowned biophysicist Tiina Karu, was suggesting in her work that photobiomodulation should be considered as a drug equivalent.
Photobiomodulation has been used in clinical practice for over 50 years, and its action mechanisms on cellular and molecular levels have been studied for over 40 years. It has been used in treating healing-resistant wounds and ulcers, spinal cord injuries, nervous system injuries, and in pain management. It is used, for instance, in treating Parkinson’s, as it prevents
mitochondrial dysfunction and dopamine loss. It also reduces inflammation, improves bone density, enhances cognitive function, improves sleep, increases energy levels, and boosts collagen, making skin look younger, and the hair and nails grow stronger.
As more and more research in this area comes out, it is simply astounding what photobiomodulation can help with. At the very moment, a team of researchers led by psychologist Francisco Gonzalez-Lima at The University of Texas are recruiting participants for a study in the use of infrared light to treat and reduce symptoms in adults and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). They will explore whether infrared light stimulation can improve cognitive and behavioral outcomes for those with ASD by increasing mitochondrial bioenergetics. “Infrared light is a very promising non-invasive treatment for a variety of disorders, and we are only just beginning to explore the possibilities this technology provides,” said Gonzalez-Lima.
The researchers have previously shown that the administration of low-level infrared light is a safe and non-invasive procedure which improves cognition and emotion, as well as enhances brain metabolic activity. They are also currently studying the benefits of infrared light stimulation in ongoing research for adults with ADHD and bipolar disorder.
Located just outside of Stoney Middleton, a characterful historic village in the heart of the Peak District, Rock Mill Retreat is both a state-of-the-art sanctuary for health and wellness and a unique accommodation option. The wellness facilities that guests have exclusive access to include medicalgrade photobiomodulation therapy, saunas, photon lights, PEMF mats, and more.
Other facilities include an EMF-shielded king-size bedroom with a grounded bed, fully-equipped kitchen, café, restaurant, meeting space and lounge, children’s playground, barbecue and picnic area, and ample car park (with EV charging points).
World-famous climbing walls and caves are accessible from the doorstep, and the area is rich with walking and hiking paths, surrounded by lush forests, gorgeous rivers, dramatic limestone gritstone edges, expansive moorlands, and the most breathtaking rolling hills.

Absolutely heads to the experts at Clarendon Fine Art Chelmsford to uncover what to expect to grace our walls this Christmas and into 2025
Clarendon Fine Art believes that buying art should be an inspiring and accessible experience for everyone –whether a seasoned collector or a firsttime buyer. Clarendon has more than 90 galleries across the UK, showcasing a range of works from household names to emerging talents, and o ers a truly welcoming and personalised experience. Its team of experts o er a free consultation service and customers can also view their preferred artwork in the comfort of their own home before making a final decision.
Here, Sarah Hill, Chief Creative O cer at Clarendon Fine Art, writes about the current and upcoming interior and art trends perfect for your home.
One of the most significant trends in 2024 has been the rise of women artists. At Clarendon we’ve seen a growing interest in a diverse range of female voices, from the vibrant sunsets of Anna Gammans to the organic narratives of Danielle O’Connor Akiyama, the grand-scale abstract minimalism of Tabitha Millet, or the bold and bright symbolism of Charmaine Chanakira. Despite ranging across a broad spectrum of styles and
colours, these artists share a transformative quality; they paint with their heart and soul, and their work can change the whole ambience of a room with its presence. This trend is reflected on the secondary market where according to Hiscox the number of lots sold by female artists increased by 21% from 2023 to 2024.
The market is increasingly turning its attention to younger artists, with 39% of the art sold by Clarendon last year coming from creators under the age of 45. Emerging talents including Jack Davis and Tim Fowler are leading the way, as their works align perfectly with both current design trends and hot topics in media and society. Fowler’s ambitious use of luminous swathes of colour to revisit the world of botanical art and Davis’s mesmerising explorations of the light and textures of sea and sky
embrace the influence of nature and the importance of environmental issues to all of us in a whole new array of styles. That said, there has also been a resurgence of interest in specific established stars of our portfolio such as David Hockney, whose recent exhibitions at Lightroom and the National Gallery have kept him at the forefront of collectors' minds, alongside those other 20th century masters whose work transcends fashions.
Over the Christmas period, we’re seeing a distinct move towards typography-based artwork. With their bright, saturated colours and witty, wise or uplifting messages, bold, text-driven pieces are already coming to the forefront. The integration of striking phrases and modern typography o ers a fresh, graphic appeal, and as Christmas approached, these pieces also came into their own as perfectly pitched and relevant gifts for anyone who loves art and appreciates something a bit di erent. The Connor Brothers have built a huge global following with their stylish vintage literary style images which o er the perfect phrase for every occasion or individual, while Pop Art legend Mr Brainwash peppers his explosive artworks with his uplifting, signature gra ti-style messages. The Real Hackney Dave is one to watch for next year, as his eye-catching work has plenty to say in a bold font, most often his signature shade of pink, which is set to be one of next year’s key colours. No trend is ever absolute as we know, and the brilliant Dave White’s stunning new golden robin has come out of leftfield to remind us that wildlife art is always
a good idea, and that any style or genre can strike a chord with collectors if the stars of time, place and talent align.
Our team of interiors-focused sta have been keeping a close eye on the trends and commissioned a wide range of bold and brights including yellows and pinks for the coming year. These are colours which bring great warmth and vibrancy to a contemporary space and artists including Jonjo, Simon Kenny, Michael F. Rumsby and, as mentioned earlier, The Real Hackney Dave who were already embracing these hues in their works are becoming increasingly popular. We have also recently signed British artist Emma Gibbons, ‘the sparkling queen of Pop Art’, whose use of these colours in her innovative and fun-loving mixed media artworks brings a lively, energetic atmosphere to any interior.
In sharp contrast to these bold and brights, abstract minimalism looks set to play a dominant role in interior design and in the
art world we are already seeing a focus on earthy tones that complement modern interiors. Artists such as Tabatha Millet, Natasha Barnes, and Beatrice Elorza are producing calming, minimalist works that reflect a clean, natural aesthetic. These pieces evoke a sense of tranquillity and order, making them highly sought after by collectors who are drawn to the clarity and serenity of these modern designs.
The vintage and nostalgia angle has been very strong in our collection this year and we only expect it to grow, but the artists who are enjoying success with this are those who o er a spin, an angle or a twist that brings the work into the modern world while retaining its charm.
We’re particularly excited about The Real Hackney Dave, whose work taps into the vintage and nostalgia trend that’s becoming increasingly popular. His pieces blend retro aesthetics, often based on vintage maps and other ephemera with a modern edge, appealing to collectors who appreciate the familiarity of nostalgic design but with a contemporary twist. The Connor Brothers are the masters of this approach, bringing a contemporary vocabulary into the world of classic book design going back to the 1940s, while an artist such as Sherree Valentine-Daines taps into our nostalgic side with her timeless scenes of innocent childhood days and visions of an idyllic lifestyle which recalls our favourite days.

Where to position your bed for the perfect slumber during winter (with a touch of Feng Shui)
Did you know that where you position your bed during winter could actually be the key to getting a good night’s sleep?
The ancient practice of Feng Shui, which emphasises harmony between your living space and energy flow, can help you create a more balanced and restful bedroom, especially in winter.
Sleep tech firm Simba has teamed up with Lisa Artis of The Sleep Charity to share expert tips on how to enhance your bedroom’s layout to promote warmth, comfort, and restful slumber during winter – with some Feng Shui tips to invite positive energy (Chi) into your sleep space.
Steer clear of cold draughts
Cold draughts from windows or doors can disrupt sleep, so avoid placing your bed directly in their path. In Feng Shui, positioning your bed in the Command Position - where you can see the door but are not directly aligned with it – encourages energy flow. A room temperature of 16–19°C is optimal for sleep, but cold spots can disturb your body’s thermal balance.
Stay cosy with a strategic heat source
Feng Shui recommends keeping balance by avoiding direct alignment with heat sources, which can cause overheating and restlessness. Position your bed a comfortable distance from radiators, allowing warmth to spread evenly without making you too hot.
Avoid exterior walls
Exterior walls are often colder. For better insulation and comfort, position your bed against an interior wall to help maintain an optimal sleep environment.
Wake up with natural light
Winter days are short, and we often wake up in darkness, which can leave
us feeling groggy and out of sync. While the temptation to hibernate is strong, getting some early morning light is vital for regulating your sleep-wake cycle and banishing the winter blues. Plus, it helps to improve alertness and reduces symptoms of Seasonal A ective Disorder (SAD).
Create a snug, cocooned feeling
In winter, the desire to feel safe, warm, and cocooned intensifies. Your bedroom should be a place to escape the cold, dark world outside. For an extra comforting sleep environment, think about placing your bed in a corner.
Layer up with rugs
Hardwood and tile floors may look chic, but in winter they can feel like stepping onto
a sheet of ice. Combat the cold underfoot by layering a thick, luxurious rug under or near your bed. Not only will it add an extra layer of warmth, but it also softens the room, making it the perfect place for sleepy feet to land in the morning.
Dim the lights, block the glare
Invest in blackout curtains or blinds. Consider bedside lamps to create a gentle, sleep-friendly atmosphere. A dark room can help regulate melatonin, the hormone responsible for a restful night’s sleep. By aligning your bed placement with Feng Shui principles, you’ll invite a restful, balanced energy that nourishes your body and mind through the coldest months of the year.

For a luxurious and relaxing escape, you’d be hard pressed to beat Thailand

Escape to Cape Fahn Hotel in Koh Samui for a fivestar luxurious retreat, a few minutes crossing to the island of Koh Fahn by boat or truck, depending on the water tide level. We’re delighted by the tractor/boat journey which drives into and across the water, where sta , a welcome drink and refreshing cold towels greet us in the lobby. We immediately relax on striped loungers in gorgeous but unassuming surroundings at the infinity pool – grey sun-bleached wood, cream parasols, storm lanterns and a beach view. Attentive sta greet us with a tray of watermelon, pineapple, cookies, spray sun lotion, and an Evian water spray. Drinks are served on shell
ra a coasters to enjoy poolside with a cute carved coconut monkey. We’re thrilled to discover the coasters amongst novel souvenirs for sale in the fabulous boutique. We grab a golf buggy past bamboo screens up to our independent villa. For once, I’m speechless – it’s one of the most beautiful hotel rooms I’ve ever seen! Bifold doors from the bedroom and lounge area open onto a private infinity pool. There’s an indoor and outdoor shower and a freestanding bath. This is the life I’m destined to live! Birds sing, boats sail on the horizon, a gentle breeze, the occasional sound of a jet ski. It’s the most relaxed I’ve been on holiday. It’s idyllic here, water lapping as I look out to the blue sky and aquamarine sea. Our very own exclusive island hideaway, where tropical sun caresses skin. It’s hot and I’ve missed a bit! Soothe sun-soaked skin with Rituals After Sun Shower Gel and Overnight Body Mask and keep holiday hair manageable with Curlsmith Travel Trio. Stepping onto the deserted beach, hammock swinging as the sun sets, we enjoy cocktails – I choose ‘Tipsy Monkey’ (it seems apt). A musician plays a ‘Kim’ instrument at Long Dtai, an authentic Southern-Thai restaurant, helmed by Michelin-starred chef David Thompson. Set against the backdrop of crystal-clear waters, we savour delectable dishes alfresco on the terrace. I pop on a Whistles dress and wander across the sandbar at low tide to nearby Choengmon Beach. Watch the shimmering waves as the setting sun paints the sky red. In the morning I fall out of bed (almost literally) into the pool for a swim. I’m whistled at whilst in the secluded outdoor shower… by a bird. At the breakfast bu et, we enjoy fresh fruit and an amazing array of pastries. For more active guests, activities include water sports, paddleboarding, kayaking and yoga. Take a sunset cruise
or there’s a moonlight cinema by the pool. The hotel’s proximity to Koh Samui airport ensures a convenient journey from this private oasis of luxury, but I don’t want to leave and I can’t wait to return!
The Banyan Tree beachfront luxury nestles in a lush jungle bay in Lamai. Open-air living spaces flow naturally into an outdoor terrace. Sip on cocktails at Sands restaurant with a view of soft white sand on the private beach. The sea is warm to snorkel, swim and kayak, or for beachside bliss, relax with a refreshing drink and icecold towels. I spy a monitor lizard swimming in the pond. Mynah birds flit around and palm trees reflect in the infinity pool. The buzz of cicadas begins as the sky glows pink. The Rainforest Spa is a hydrotherapy wellness facility which you can book all to yourself to unwind. A buggy service whizzes guests around the hilly terrain. Individual villas designed with calm decor and dark teak wood have private infinity pools.
A sweeping drive leads us to the grand entrance of five-star hotel Melati Beach Resort. Lily pads bloom with lotus flowers. Beachside, the infinity pool has a stunning view of Thongson Bay beach and a swim-up bar. The pool villa has stylish, spacious interiors, and yep, you’ve guessed it, its own private swimming pool. Ooh, there’s a flash in the outside shower... it’s a yellow-vented bulbul bird perched on top. People paddle in the ocean, jet skis zoom on the horizon, white trails in their wake. At Kan Sak Thong restaurant, dine on Thai-French fusion cuisine with Chef Ken. The entertainment’s smiling dancers make us smile too. Well, Thailand is the Land of Smiles… For stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, experience a day trip tour around Koh Samui island, visit the elephant sanctuary, take a boat trip or watch the fire shows. Sail around the surrounding islands, and snorkel to see shoals of brightly coloured fish. Paradise Island!

New Hall School is the new owner of Boreham House. Absolutely finds out more
New Hall School, the leading Catholic independent school based in Chelmsford, has acquired the historic Boreham House, a Grade I listed property just a mile from its campus. This acquisition will see Boreham House transformed into the new home of New Hall’s Preparatory Divisions by September 2025, subject to planning consents. Designed by James Gibbs and Henry Flitcroft, and dating back to 1728, Boreham House sits within a 35-acre estate of landscaped gardens. Originally part of the New Hall estate, it even features the iconic oak staircase transferred from New Hall in the 18th century.
Boreham House will o er bespoke spaces for its younger pupils, freeing up room at the main site for developments such as a new university-style Sixth Form Centre and expanded performing arts facilities. Principal Katherine Je rey, who has led New Hall for over 20 years, described the acquisition as a unique opportunity. “Reuniting Boreham House with New Hall restores a significant historical link and allows us to continue innovating in education within an inspirational setting,” she says. Boreham House has a rich history. It served as a training centre under Henry Ford in the 20th century and, more recently, as an award-winning wedding venue managed by Teresa Ward. Now, under the stewardship of New Hall School Trust, its legacy will continue
to evolve. Teresa Ward expressed her confidence in the transition: “I am delighted Boreham House is returning to its roots as part of the New Hall estate. I know it will thrive as a place of learning and community.”
The acquisition has been warmly welcomed by students, parents and sta . Samantha Twomey, Head of Preparatory Division, says: “This is an exciting chapter for our pupils. Boreham House’s history and beauty will provide an inspiring environment for their education.”
Looking ahead, early plans include restoring the avenue of trees that once lined the property’s approach, echoing New Hall’s iconic tree-lined Avenue.

James Hunt looks ahead to what 2025 may hold in store for the property rental market
It’s a brand new year and with fresh starts no doubt come thoughts of future plans. Now, there has been a lot of speculation and reporting on the rental market, with anticipated government reforms; however to better understand your possible investment options it’s worth taking stock of where things are at.
Zoopla’s December Rental Market Report shares some interesting insights. The average annual UK rental cost has risen by £3,240 since 2021, with rents 3.9% higher over the last year. Although this is an increase it is the lowest rate for three years and suggests a potential stabilisation in line with a ordability constraints. Their prediction is the average UK rents will be expected to rise by 4% in 2025, with larger cities, including London, being more stable while rents continue to rise in more a ordable areas.
Further the widely reported imbalance between supply and demand has seemingly narrowed slightly. Although there are gradual improvements, it remains that there are more rental enquiries than available properties and well priced rentals do not tend to spend much time on the market.
The government’s 1,500,000 new build homes target will no doubt create a number of properties becoming available
to rent, with private landlords an essential part of supporting rental supply. There are many factors that continue for the average prospective tenants and why demand will always remain including the a ordability, or una ordability, of homeownership for first time buyers, migration for work and study and low growth in the size of the social rented sector.
As housing policies evolve, it’s important to stay informed on how legislative changes may impact the rental landscape. If you’re considering an investment property or becoming a landlord but need some insight, contact me or my team.

The local crisp producer recently won big at the 2024 Great British Food Awards
Essex-based artisan crisp manufacturer, Fairfields Farm, has won the East Anglia Region award at The Great British Food Awards 2024 for its Prawn Cocktail flavour. Based in Wormingford, the multi-award-winning crisp producer expanded its product range in May 2024, with the introduction of its new prawn cocktail seasoning. The launch was inspired by growing consumer demand for classic and nostalgic flavours, a trend that Fairfields Farm has embraced with remarkable success.
Fairfields Farm’s Prawn Cocktail is one of eight flavours in the brand’s line-up, all of which are 100% vegan and gluten-free – a decision made in 2022 to ensure that all consumers can enjoy the crisps regardless of dietary restrictions.
The Prawn Cocktail flavour has quickly become a customer favourite, crafted with a carefully curated blend of seasonings and spices, including tangy vinegar and sweet tomato. Each flavour is made using Fairfields Farm’s homegrown crisping potatoes, which are hand-cooked on-site using the farm’s renewable energy sources.
Robert Strathern, co-founder of Fairfields Farm, comments on the latest award win saying: “It is truly an honour to receive the East Anglia Region award at the Great British Food Awards. I’ve been eager to introduce a Prawn Cocktail flavour for a while now, and it’s amazing to see how much others love it too. With the growing demand for nostalgic flavours, we knew the time was right and the response
has been incredible. It’s a collaborative e ort and we are surrounded by the best people to create the best crisps out there.”
The Stratherns have been farming in East Anglia for three generations. They harvest potatoes, maize and rye on beautiful farmland across the Colne Valley just north of Colchester. Robert and his wife and co-founder Laura live at Fairfields Farm with their children. It’s where it all
happens, from growing their potatoes to making their handcooked crisps, which they’ve been doing here since 2006. Growing potatoes is something their families have been perfecting for three generations. Despite this long history, they’re not afraid to try new things – particularly if by changing their methods they reduce their impact on the environment around us. In fact, they’re setting their sights firmly on being the UK’s first carbon neutral crisp producer, so expect to hear a lot more from them in the future.
