July issue highlights
Irecall summers lasting forever, which was surprising when I realise I didn't actually do much. There was the regular family holiday to Cornwall – and every now and again a foreign trip – but apart from that I was down the local park playing football pretty much most days. Bliss... or so I thought. If I happened to be young again, an Essex summer would be a stunner for me. This month, we have rounded up some of the best places that are perfect for all the family – and only in Essex do you get such a wide variety of things to do and see. Perhaps you fancy a daredevil ride at Adventure Island? Or an ice cream by the sea at Walton-on-the-Naze? Those with the energy to burn, Nuclear High Ropes is perfect, whereas those who don't want to do anything at all, Down Hall's spa is calling. Animal lovers can muck in at Colchester Zoo, you can take the train at Audley End Miniature Railway, or indulge in the latest art at Firstsite. The choice is yours. Really all we need is the sun to play ball. Enjoy!

“Once I started posting, I just fell in love with the mother community”
From a simple escape from a ‘poonami’ to keeping the kids busy, Essex’s Emily Norris has become the go-to for parental advice. Absolutely discovers how it all startedBy MARK KEBBLE
We have all been there, even nonparents when looking after family members.
Sitting there with a happy, gurgling child when you feel something. You are not sure what, but then a smell suddenly washes over you and you realise a nappy needs changing. What will face you is always a suspenseful moment and, sometimes, the damage is so bad you can’t prevent it from seeping out on to you or the nearest furnishing. It’s why millions have fallen at the mercy of Emily Norris and her calm approach to any parental dilemma.
Essex-based Emily is a much-loved author and YouTuber with over 1 million followers and has become known as the go-to guru for household and parenting tips, attracting celebrity fans such as Mrs Hinch and Giovanna Fletcher along the way. The mum of three has created a positive online community to support others in
navigating the highs and lows of family life, from organisation hacks and nifty ways to tackle the school run and housework, to quick weeknight dinners and boredombusting tips to keep the kids entertained, as well as addressing the ‘bigger picture’ issues such as sleep, boundary-pushing and post-baby partner relationships.
Emily’s book, Things I Wish I’d Known: My Hacks for a Tidy Home, Happy Kids and a Calmer You, is out now and tackles aspects of family life. “I’ve had such an overwhelmingly lovely response from my followers worldwide, buying copies and sending me messages about how usefulthey have found the book,” Emily smiles when asked how the response has been.”I managed to meet many of my followers at my book signing, which was a special experience –it was quitesurreal and a day I will never forget, literally one of the best days of my life.”
The book was seen as the natural next step from the online support network Emily started building a decade ago. “I’d gone from being a busy marketing director
to just ‘mummy’, and when my husband Matt returned home from working long hours at the end of each day, I felt a bit silly only having stories of dirty nappies and (a lack of) sleep to regale him with,” she explains why she started. “I loved being a full-time mum to my boys, but I missed the adult interaction I’d had at workand, as a result, my self-confidencetook a knock. It’s weird because although I barely had a second on my own, in many ways, I’d never felt more alone.
“One thing I really enjoyed about spending time on YouTube was getting tips and ideas from othermums, pickingup simple tricks (or ‘hacks’). So I figured, why not start my own? Once I started posting, I fell in love with the mother community as well.
“It all happened organically, really,” Emily says on the topics covered. “I was documenting inreal time, so their development and stages of childhood and my ever-evolving title of mum determined the content I would be making. It’s also been a great place to test out hacks and
“After ten years as a mother, it would be a waste not to put pen to paper and give the tips I've learnt”
share whether they work in reality. My audience has grown with me, so have their children, meaning the topics that are in my life are often in theirs, too.”
So, why now for a book? “Writing a book feels like a culmination of all the content and advice I’ve put out over the past decade,” Emily says. “It felt like the right time; it is the book I wish I’d had when I had my first baby – a one-stop-shop of hacks and habits to make life that little bit easier. Matt and I always joke about when you leave the hospital with your newarrivalthey should give you a book, and then I realised after ten years of being a mother, it would be a waste not to put pen to paper and give my tips that I’ve learnt along the way. There are also so many hacks that anyone (including non-parents) would benefit from, including home, food, cleaning, and travel hacks.”
There are some gems when it comes to hacks in the book, but we have to ask Emily – does she have a favourite? “That’s such atoughquestion, how can you make me choose?! I guess in my top three would be when I first learned that baby vests were designed with an envelope neck so that in the event of an explosive ‘poonami’, you could easily pull the vest down over
their body to remove it rather than lifting it over their head and causing carnage. That one blew my mind.Another brilliant hack when the children were small was to peel the liner around stickers in a sticker book, which made it easy for them to peel the stickers o themselves. A favourite that we still use now is an ‘I’m bored jar’ – we fill it with easy activities for the children to do, and in those ‘I’m bored’ moments, they can pick something out of the jar to do.”
It’s not just parental advice that Emily has become known for as she also has a social media account documenting renovations at her Brentwood home. “Viewersreally love my cleaning videos and were excited about our house move, so we decided to dedicate an Instagram page @emilynorrishome to our renovationsas well asdocumentingit on YouTube,” she explains.“We have always revamped and developed the homes
we have lived in, and it is such a lovely keepsake of all the hard work that has gone into upgrading our living space. It’s alsosohelpful to others who are renovating to get inspiration or advice and learn things we’ve learned along the way. Weare inundatedwith home interior questions, so we knowthat weare helping many.”
On living in Essex, Emily can’t say enough good things about it. “Being originally from Canada means I am like a tourist and appreciate how nice it is.There are so many stunning parts. In Brentwood, we frequent Weald and Thorndon Park with the dog, and the boys love a trip to Hylands Park. If we take a staycation in the UK, we’ll often opt for Norfolk or the Cotswolds. We absolutely love Smiths restaurant in Ongar.Alittle more relaxed, but we recently discoveredMoto Pizza in Chelmsfordand thought it was great!”
Looking ahead, we may soon get some fatherly advice thrown into the mix. “I really hope to make inspiring content for as long as possible, and I would love to start a podcast in the future. It seems my audience likes the onscreen chemistry between my husband and me, so we thought a podcast would give followers a chance to see us a little more relaxed and see howhumourplays a key role in our relationship, which is still going strong after 19 years, 15 years married, threechildren, a dog, and a few renovations.”

The county town has something for everyone, from history bu s to lovers of haute
Chelmsford has a rich and varied history dating back to ancient times.
The area was originally settled by the Romans, who recognized its strategic importance due to its location on the River Can. They established a town known as Caesaromagus, which served as a significant market and administrative centre. The name means “Caesar’s market” and underscores the town’s early importance in trade and governance.
Following the Roman withdrawal from Britain, Chelmsford’s prominence diminished until the establishment of the town during the medieval period. The o cial founding of Chelmsford is typically dated to 1199 when King John
granted it a royal charter to hold a weekly market. This move bolstered its development into a bustling market town. The construction of a stone bridge over the River Can around the same period further enhanced its status by improving transportation and trade routes.
Throughout the Middle Ages, Chelmsford continued to grow. The town became a significant ecclesiastical centre with the founding of the Chelmsford Cathedral, originally a parish church dating back to the 13th century. It achieved cathedral status in 1914, reflecting Chelmsford’s growing importance.
The town played a notable role in the English Civil War (1642-1651), siding predominantly with the Parliamentarians. Its strategic location made it a key site for troop movements and logistics. In
the aftermath, Chelmsford continued to thrive, benefiting from the agricultural prosperity of the surrounding areas.
The Industrial Revolution brought significant changes to Chelmsford.
The town became a hub of innovation and industry, most notably with the establishment of the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company in 1899 by Guglielmo Marconi. This company made Chelmsford a pivotal site in the development of radio technology and communication, earning it the nickname “the birthplace of radio”.
The 20th century saw further expansion and modernisation. Chelmsford was o cially designated a borough in 1888 and continued to grow as a residential and commercial centre. In the 21st century, Chelmsford achieved city status as part of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012, marking a significant milestone in its long history.

Visit Essex, the county’s tourism organisation, lists the top ten things to do as a family this summer.
Enjoy a day out at your favourite attraction
Pop to your favourite attraction with the family. Take in the sights of Southend on the City Wheel or get yourselves in a spin on the Ramba Zamba at the nearby popular Adventure Island. Last year McLaren celebrated its 60th birthday and, as Absolutely discovers, it all stemmed from one young boy’s racing dream
McLaren, that stalwart of Formula 1 racing and the only manufacturer to have entered and won all three legs of motorsport’s illustrious ‘Triple Crown’, has just celebrated its 60th birthday. With six decades at the very sharpest end of the motorsport food chain under its belt, and a trophy cabinet to show for it, the name has etched itself into not only folklore as one of the UK’s most well-known companies, but a global brand with legions of passionate fans.
It began with a determined young boy. Born in 1937 in Auckland, New Zealand, Bruce McLaren was diagnosed with Perthes disease at a young age, leaving him with one leg shorter than the other, and was told he may never walk again. But, having spent every waking minute of his formative years at his father’s service station and workshop, Bruce was a little kid with a big dream – to one day race cars, just like his father, Les, had done once upon a time. After spending an incredible two years on his back in traction and with his legs in plaster casts, at the age of 15 Bruce and Les McLaren began rebuilding an old Austin 7 which had made its way into the workshop. They had originally planned
to sell the car on, but Bruce convinced his father to instead enter it into the 1952 hillclimb at Muriwai. Due to his father falling ill, young Bruce entered the race himself and, in a surprise to all, won. And with this, an incredible racing career began.
But driving alone wasn’t enough. Bruce had the mind of an engineer and in 1963 formed his own racing team, Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd., with the ambition of building and racing his own cars.
Today, when entering McLaren’s headquarters in Woking, Surrey, you are still greeted by that little red Austin 7, stood on the building’s impressive boulevard of engineering history, right next to a bronze statue of its owner, Bruce McLaren. A little further down, past awe-inspiring cars such as the McLaren F1, the P1 or the new Artura Spider, you will also find an expansive trophy cabinet, housing all of the marque’s souvenirs of success. And there, at the very front, almost overshadowed by its much bigger counterparts, stands a small
golden star on a black base – the first ever McLaren trophy, won by Bruce McLaren at that momentous hillclimb race in Muriwai.
The building housing all of this heritage, the McLaren Technology Centre, has been home to the McLaren brand since 2004, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its o cial opening by Queen Elizabeth II just a couple of months ago. Stood on land that originally housed an ostrich farm, the building was designed by globally renowned British architect Lord Norman Foster, who was originally tasked with

creating a building that felt like 90% NASA and 10% Disney. Since then, the futuristic looking building has become a topic of mystery and marvel among car enthusiasts. So it comes as no surprise that it has in fact served as a set for multiple award-winning film and TV productions.
The space age facility feels timeless, not two decades old. The suspended timeline the building’s aura creates makes perfect sense though. For a racing team that has six decades of experience on track, McLaren has a road car business that is actually younger than Tesla. It first built a road-car in 1992 with the legendary F1, delivered by a small team of Formula 1 engineers and designers.
But McLaren Automotive – McLaren’s dedicated supercar marque, as we know it today – has only been going since 2010. In that short space time, it has taken those 60 years of on-track experience and innovation to create a supercar business that is already well established, forward-looking and incredibly creative, with a world-leading edge when it comes to lightweight design.
From a bird’s eye perspective, the dramatic building and its lake form a perfect circle, echoing a ying/yang symbol. It’s stunning architecture, but also serves a purpose. The lake contains over 30 million litres of water which is continuously pumped through heat exchangers, helping to cool the buildings and dissipate the heat produced by the Formula 1 wind tunnel. And the greenery surrounding the building captures up to 100 tonnes of carbon every year.
While Bruce McLaren’s life sadly ended much too early in 1970, one cannot help but wonder what he would make of the legacy he left behind. His name, passion and dedication could have died with him – instead they have lived on in racing and road cars alike and can be felt and seen in everything that comes out of Woking to this day. It can all be summed up by one of Bruce’s most wellknown quotes: “I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone.”

Essex dance troupe
Diversity danced up a storm at a local charity’s annual ball, helping to raise over £100,000 for local hospice care
iversity, who shot to fame after winning Britain’s Got Talent back in 2009, wowed more than 270 supporters at the annual Havens Hospices Gala Ball with a spectacular performance at the Cli s Pavilion on Saturday 18 May.
The group, which opened its dance studio locally last year in Kings Road, Westcli -onSea, also showed incredible generosity by donating a private dance lesson, a tour of its state-of-the-art dance studio, and a signed copy of its Supernova tour brochure for supporters to bid on at the auction. One lucky supporter won the lot by bidding a whopping £3,000.
After their performances, brothers Ashley and Jordan Banjo from Diversity thanked supporters and explained why events like this are important to support their local community. Jordan said: “We all know how important the work is that Havens Hospices does and how, without nights like this, none of that work would be possible. We grew up locally, so know people first-hand who have been helped by Fair Havens and Little Havens. Many of us are parents, too, so Little Havens strikes a chord. Have a great night; let’s raise some money and have fun while doing it.”
Following a silent auction, luxury ra e and grand auction, £113,000 was raised on the night to support hundreds of local children, young people, and adults living with incurable conditions. Its free, specialist care is available to families for as long as it’s needed, within the home and at its two hospices, Fair Havens and Little Havens.
The night focused on one special little boy called Noah, a Little Havens child who died four years ago at the age of four, after living with an incurable brain tumour. Noah’s family, his mum Kat, dad Nick and twin sister Ella, were supported by Little Havens with respite, symptom management and therapies to support their emotional wellbeing. Noah’s parents were guests of honour on the night. They gave a speech about how the hospice was there for them during the most di cult time in their lives and highlighted how important fundraising events like this are to raise vital funds.

Wine recommendations for the month
By THE WINE SOCIETYThe Society's Greek White 2023
£8.95
2023 was a fabulous year for roditis, providing opulent stone-fruit while moschofilero provides rose-hip backing vocals. The result is a more fruit-forward wine filled with peach and grapefruit notes on the refreshing palate.
Rosé d'Anjou GrolleauGamay, Famille Bougrier 2023
£8.25
This is a delicate, odry Loire rosé that is pale in colour and light as a feather and works with or without food, including the light heat and spice of Asian cuisine.
Zephyr 6 Marlborough Pinot Noir 2022
£14.50
Marlborough pinot noir is crisper, lighter and more red-fruit driven than pinot from many other regions of New Zealand, and this is a very good example. Bright red-cherry and raspberry on the nose, backed up by a delicate hint of soy and even a touch of fresh ginger.
Since it was founded back in 1874, The Wine Society has dared to do business a little differently. Bringing together a community united by a shared love of wine, The Society is a co-operative and owned by its members. This means there is no requirement to pump profit into annual dividends or bonuses for shareholders – all profits go back into the business.

Tom Aikens o ers some seasonal techniques designed for the Big Green Egg
Serves 4-6
EGG set up: Direct
Recommended charcoal: Oak & Hickory
EGG target temperature: 200°C
Cooking time: 25 minutes, or until you have reached an internal temperature of 63°C
INGREDIENTS
For the sea bass
• 2kg sea bass, kept whole
• 3 lemons
• 1 fennel bulb
• A bunch of dill
• A bunch of rosemary
• A bunch of thyme
• Sea salt
• Extra virgin olive oil
METHOD
Set up your egg
1 Set up your EGG for direct cooking with the Stainless Steel Grid on top of the ConvEGGtor basket. Your target temperature is 200°C.
2 Remove the zest from one of the lemons and set aside. Slice all three lemons into circles, around 1-2cm thick. Slice the fennel bulb lengthways into strips. Once the target temperature has been reached, lay the fennel, herbs and most of the lemon circles around the Stainless Steel Grid to act as a bed for the fish. Cook your fish
3 Drizzle olive oil and sea salt all over and inside the cavity of the sea bass. Place the fish onto its bed of aromatics, then top with the remaining lemon rounds. Drizzle with more olive oil and a little more salt.
4 Close the Dome and cook for around 20 minutes until the fish reaches an internal temperature of 60°C. Remove from the EGG and leave to rest for at least 5 minutes.
5 De-bone and skin the fish and place onto a platter along with any jammy pieces of roasted fennel and herbs that haven’t been scorched. Drizzle with olive oil, fresh lemon zest and sea salt before serving.
Serves 6
EGG set up: Direct, rotisserie
Recommended charcoal: Oak & Hickory EGG target temperature: 240°C Cooking time: 10-20 minutes, or until you reach an internal temperature of 48°C (rare), 53°C (medium rare), 57°C (medium), 65°C (medium well) or 70°C (well done)
For the beef
• 1 beef picanha, approximately 1.5kg
• Sea salt
For the glaze
• 500ml olive oil
• A handful of rosemary, leaves picked and chopped
• A handful of thyme, leaves picked and chopped
• 5 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
• 1 lemon, zest and juice
• Sea salt
• Crushed black pepper
• 2 tsp chilli flakes
For the chilli salt
• 100g sea salt
• 1 tsp dried chilli flakes
• 1 tsp smoked paprika
• 1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 Set up your EGG for direct rotisserie cooking, with the Rotisserie ring in place and the motor unit plugged in. Your target temperature is 240°C.
2 Cut the picanha into three or four thick steaks of roughly equal thickness, making sure you’re cutting along the grain of the meat, not against it. (They’ll never be completely even, as the starting shape is roughly triangular).
3 Remove the top fork from the spit. One by one, push each steak onto the spit by piercing through the fat-covered side then folding the meat slightly so you can push back out through the fat on the other side. The steaks will end up curving over the top of the spit, fat-side up. Return the top fork to the spit and push it into the end steak. Tighten both wing screws.
4 Once the target temperature has been reached, open the Dome, insert the spit into the motor and switch on the Rotisserie. As the spit turns, season the meat. Close the Dome and cook the steak until it reaches an internal temperature of 40°C.
5 Meanwhile, mix all the glaze ingredients together in a bowl. When the picanha hits 40°C, open the Dome and begin brushing the glaze onto the meat as it turns. Continue regularly basting the steak until the internal temperature reaches 48°C.
6 Remove the steaks from the spit and leave to rest for a good 10 minutes. Mix the chilli salt ingredients together. Once the meat is rested, slice against the grain, season with chilli salt and serve with grilled cabbage and flatbreads.
Serves4
EGG set up: Direct
Recommended charcoal: Oak & Hickory
EGG target temperature: 200°C-250°C Cooking time: 6 minutes
INGREDIENTS
• 8 hand-dived scallops, in their shells
• 4 small cloves of garlic, thinly sliced
• 4 tsp picked thyme leaves
• Zest of 1 lemon
• 8 tsp butter
• Sea salt
• Black pepper
METHOD
Set up your egg
1 Set up your EGG for direct cooking with the Stainless Steel Grid in place. Your target temperature is 200°C.
2 Clean the scallops and shells well, making sure that they’re dry. Alongside the scallops, place into each shell 1 tsp butter, ½ tsp thyme, ½ clove of chopped garlic, a sprinkle of lemon zest, and a seasoning of salt and pepper.
Bake your scallops
3 Place the scallop shells directly onto the Stainless Steel Grid, close the Dome and cook for 6-7 minutes. Increase the temperature to 250°C if the butter doesn’t quickly start to bubble.
4 Serve the scallops in their shells in pools of flavoursome butter.

Haven House Children’s Hospice’s latest Sparkle Walk brought the whole community together to raise vital funds
The May sunshine beamed as more than 300 walkers took to the streets to complete this year’s Sparkle Walk in aid of Haven House Children’s Hospice. Now in its fifth year, the 10K sponsored walk on Friday 17 May started with Dance 21 Woodford kicking o the fun with an energetic warmup at St Mary with Christ Church in Wanstead Place.
Dressed in purple, the hospice’s signature colour, participants lit up the streets with an array of glitter, fancy dress, sparkles and smiles.
Reiko Murray, Head of Mass Participation Fundraising at Haven House, says: “Haven House is a charity which couldn’t exist without the support of our local community. It was incredible to see people of all ages stepping up to
raise money for the hospice. With the sun shining on us, we couldn’t have asked for a better evening. A special thank you to our event sponsor Bowden Bradley and to all our volunteers who came out in force to marshal the route.”
The youngest participant at just seven-years-old was Niki, who completed the walk with her mum Bobi, with the eldest walker being an amazing 85-year-old man from India who took part with family members.
Preschool manager Shraddha Patel had the honour of cutting the ribbon at the starting line, having taken part in the walk for the last four years and having raised more than £3,000 for the hospice’s vital care services.
Shraddha, who completed the walk with colleagues, says: “I have lived and worked on Woodford High Road for 24 years, so this wonderful charity is on my doorstep. Haven House’s services provide a vital source of strength when children and their families need it most. Everyone involved with and working at the hospice are just superheroes in my opinion. I am just playing a very small part in raising some funds which will allow the charity to continue supporting many more families in the future.”
In total 346 walkers completed the route around Wanstead, Woodford and South Woodford before finishing at the Cuckfield Pub with a glass of fizz. The team has raised an incredible £40,110 which will support the hospice in caring for seriously ill children and their families.
Located in London and Milton Keynes, Zental o ers an unparalleled dental and facial aesthetic experience, rated 5* by thousands of patients
At Zental, they believe the best results are found in the details. Their practices blend cutting-edge technology with a philosophy of tranquillity and wellbeing. Their thoughtfully designed practices have been curated to soothe all your senses.
From Invisalign and composite bonding to advanced teeth whitening, they invite you to Trust in Calm with Zental.
Zental was born from the shared vision of two lifelong school friends, Ihsaan and Arif. Ihsaan, a multi-qualified medical doctor, dentist, and surgeon, became increasingly disillusioned with the dental industry. He witnessed first-hand how often patients were anxious and how the clinical atmosphere added to this discomfort. Arif, himself a successful entrepreneur, felt empathetic towards patients that needed care but had nowhere to go. He too was one of the many people who didn’t enjoy going to the dentist. They both saw a desperate need to transform dental visits into calming and positive experiences. Their goal was to create a sanctuary of holistic well-being coupled with exceptional clinical care.
This vision culminated in their first branch opening in Barnet in 2019, where they built on their reputable services and award-winning dentists to help more patients and serve the local communities. They then opened Cricklewood and Milton Keynes in 2021, Bexleyheath in 2022, Knightsbridge in 2023, and Earls Court last month, whilst maintaining the high level of patient care, innovation, and zen-like atmosphere we built our reputation on.
Composite bonding is very popular as it is a versatile, cost-e ective solution for repairing chipped, worn, or broken teeth.
• Before: The patient was unhappy with her smile; the colour, shape, and uneven edges of her top teeth.
• After: Composite bonding transformed the patient’s smile simply and remarkably. This quick, drill-free solution gives a whiter, more naturally shaped smile. Their review exclaimed, “My teeth are doing WONDERS!”
Dr Mira Morcos is their Composite specialist.
“If you are self-conscious about overlapping teeth then Invisalign is for you. This evolutionary system straightens teeth
without metal braces,” says Dr Hemel Mandalia is the Invisalign specialist.
As Diamond Invisalign providers, they handle hundreds of cases each year, showcasing their expertise in this treatment. Every patient receives a ClinCheck – a 3D impression of their smile – after a quick consultation scan.
As we age, we lose the youthful volume in our faces and the quality of our skin declines. To address volume loss that can prematurely age us, premium products such as dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, and skin boosters help reverse signs of aging.
“Our approach is always naturallooking results that enhance our patients' youthful appearance and boost their confidence,” explains Dr Maria Olawale, their specialist in facial aesthetics.
A healthy mouth is not just about aesthetics; it’s an investment in your well-being that can pay dividends for your entire body.
“Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and a ect other parts of the body, highlighting the interconnectedness of oral health and general health. So, remember
to schedule regular visits. Prevention is better than cure!” emphasises Dr Alla Bacalu, their Dental Hygienist specialist.
Premier teeth whitening treatments are a safe and e ective way to remove stains and discolouration. Remember that teeth whitening treatment should only be prescribed by a dentist. Choose from their in-chair or at-home whitening systems, featuring only the top brands like Boutique, Enlighten, and Philips Zoom. “Remember that teeth whitening treatment should only be prescribed by a dentist,” says Dr Mohamed Kassam, their Teeth Whitening specialist.
Zental provide the highest quality of care in a setting that promotes peace and relaxation. At Zental, they are proud to have received thousands of 5* reviews since inspection in 2019, a testament to their service. Displaying artwork is one of the most enjoyable and e ective ways to reflect your personal style and create an inviting atmosphere but, for anyone new to the art world, it can
be a tricky place to navigate.
Visiting a reputable gallery, such as Clarendon Fine Art, can o er a comforting assurance of quality and authenticity, while making the art buying experience enjoyable. Working with an art consultant,
who is passionate about the artwork, but also knowledgeable and dedicated, makes art collecting a joy and a less daunting experience. This allows you to take the time to find the perfect piece of artwork for your space, which can take anywhere from weeks to months, without ever rushing into a decision.
As a first step when choosing artwork, it’s important to understand the space you’re working with and what value you want the artwork to bring. When considering your budget, factors such as the artist’s reputation, rarity, and medium a ect pricing, but it’s important to remember that collecting
art is not about the price tag, but the value it brings to your life. Art buying doesn’t have to break the bank and consultants can guide you to great finds. Depending on your budget, you may want to consider an up and coming artist, from young British talents like Tim Fowler and Lee Kaplan, which are often at a much lower price point. Exploring work from up-and-coming artists is a lovely way to start your art collection, as it supports their early careers and can be very rewarding as their prominence grows. Choose artworks that resonate with you emotionally, those that you can’t walk away from without a second look. Art is expressive and should evoke a feeling or a connection. Whether it’s a contemplative beach scene by an artist like Philip Gray, or an explosive piece of street art from Mr
Brainwash, it should be something that speaks your language.
Curiosity is key when it comes to choosing art so, even if you have no prior experience or knowledge of artists, don’t be daunted or put o . Being adventurous and open minded can open unexpected doors and lead to some delightful discoveries. To make the decision easier, the Clarendon teams are always happy to take a selection of artwork to a customer’s home, o ce or business for a bespoke on-site art consultation – a service which has contributed to their reputation as a gallery that, quite literally, goes the extra mile.
Don’t overlook practical aspects such as space requirements and installation, as displaying your artwork e ectively is crucial. Consider the scale of your space – a small painting might look lost on a large wall, whereas groupings or larger pieces can make a bold statement. Artists such as Danielle O’Connor Akiyama and Patrick Rubinstein o er striking diptychs and experimental pieces perfect for larger spaces. Proper lighting can enhance the impact of your art dramatically, so try to avoid direct sunlight and opt for indirect lighting to prevent glare. Again, this is where working with a gallery is beneficial as they can take care of everything from delivery to hanging the artwork, bespoke insurance and anything else you may need, helping to make your art experience a hassle-free experience and one that you will want to repeat again and again.
Sara Hill is Chief Creative O cer at Clarendon Fine Art, who have galleries in Epping and Chelmsford. See more at clarendonfineart.com

Hayley Barclay travels to St Lucia with a toddler to try two family-friendly resorts
St Lucia is typically associated with romance, remote hotels and rum. So not the first choice perhaps for your first long-haul holiday with a rambunctious toddler. However, it is such a warm, joyous place with so many fond memories for me, we decided to be adventurous and take our son. His age was also a factor: up to the age of two children can fly without their own seat, so this saves a considerable amount of money. Of course, having a restless toddler on your lap for nearly nine hours is not for the faint of heart so in hindsight, perhaps splashing out a bit extra for comfort might have been sensible. While the flight was challenging (snacks and more snacks), once we landed the blue skies and balmy breeze instantly perked me up. St Lucia is five hours ahead, so expect a few very early mornings, but the Caribbean way of “all will be well” resets everything nicely.
THE ROOM – Our first stop was a five-minute drive from the airport in Vieux Fort, on the island’s Atlantic side. It’s a sprawling, activitypacked all-inclusive resort with 250 rooms, a mile-long beach and its own water park.
Coconut Bay is divided into two sections –adults-only Serenity and the family-friendly Splash. We stayed in a Splash King Concierge room with a huge bed, wooden cot and a balcony overlooking the resort and ocean. Newly renovated, the rooms are decked out in fun, tropical colours and the hotel had left a lovely gift bag of treats for our son.
The balcony was particularly enjoyable once our son was asleep as we could watch the entertainment and have a drink while he slumbered on.
Though the resort is big, our room was within easy walking distance to the pools, restaurants and kids’ club so we didn’t use our buggy once.
FACILITIES – Coconut Bay’s children’s facilities are exceptional. Dotted around the resort’s 85 acres is a huge family-friendly pool, a lazy river, water slides and Cocoland Kidz Klub, the biggest on the island.
We left our son there for a few hours each day and he loved it – a testament to the sta , who were all so jolly, warm and professional. The club has its own mini water park, a donkey sanctuary, zip line, pirate ship, stacks of toys and even little beds for naps. For older children there are also excursions such as turtle watching.
Most evenings there is entertainment or live music – we enjoyed a surprisingly decent Michael Jackon tribute and a themed barbeque.
“The buffet is plentiful, varied and fresh, ranging from traditional Creole saltfish to pizza”
Activities during the day include fitness classes, a spa, painting lessons and water sports – and of course the beautiful beach complete with its rum and burger shack. If you run out of essentials, there is also an onsite shop. Don’t forget swim nappies like I did though as they cost an eye-wateringly $20 (£15.50) a pack.
THE FOOD – Coconut Bay has nine restaurants including the main bu et-style eatery open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The bu et is plentiful, varied and fresh, ranging from traditional Creole saltfish to pizza and it’s informal and fun, great for eating out with a toddler. For something smarter, Coconut Bay also has six fine-dining restaurants and another must-try is the Jerk Treehouse. Coconut Bay is a big and bold four-star resort, brimful of Caribbean charm. It’s not quiet or private, but has the friendliest, most helpful sta who are well used to the unpredictability of children.
THE ROOM – Our second stop was a twohour drive to the north of the island, near Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island National Park. The lobby at The Landings is palatial – soothing and elegant and it felt more like a grand residence than a hotel. The suites and apartments are all spread out between a marina and the beach and zippy little golf buggies are available to ferry you from place to place. We stayed in a two-bedroom beachfront apartment with a huge kitchen, living area and a sun-drenched terrace. The decor was chic and simple, and there was even a laundry room (with washing powder), plus a rotation of butlers who were available from 6am until midnight if needed and helped with tasks such as organising a babysitter, room service or o ering to fetch things our son had left on the beach. Having such a large, well-equipped space meant our son was a bit calmer and had somewhere to play out of the sun.
FACILITIES – The Landings has a kids' club for ages four and up so we did not use it –however there is a babysitting service, which we
used one evening so we could have dinner on the beach and watch some dancing and fire-eaters. There are two pools – one overlooking the marina – that were spotless and never crowded, but we spent most of our time on the beach. Children are most welcome at The Landings, but the vibe was more luxury and sedate, a lovely contrast to the first part of our holiday. FOOD – The Landings has a few eating options. The Beach Club, with tables that seem to float on the water, o ers upmarket Caribbean cuisine like tuna and watermelon tartar, house brined triggerfish and sangria chicken. More child-friendly options are also available like pasta and pizza. The fabulous breakfast spread is served there, too.
A short walk away is the Callaloo Beach Club, where you can dine on the sand. This place was great for letting our toddler splash in the sea while we had a rest with a drink.
The menu is a bit more casual but still tasty with options such as green papaya and chayote salad or blackened fish wrap. For adults-only fine dining there is The Palms, located in the main part of the hotel. The ‘east meets west’ menu changes seasonally and with its dramatic marina views and fresh seafood cooked on a lava stone grill, it’s a real date-night treat.
THINGS TO DO IN ST LUCIA
St Lucia has such a rich heritage and magnificent scenery it seems a shame to stay resort-bound. The island’s iconic backdrop is the Piton mountains and a brilliant way to see them is on the Tet Paul Nature Trail. It’s a 40-minute hike near Soufriere that isn’t too arduous for kids, but definitely too demanding for a toddler.
Market day in Soufriere is also worth a visit. It’s a great way to experience a Caribbean
port town and while it’s noisy and chaotic, it’s lots of fun. St Lucia is a once-in-a lifetime experience that the whole family can enjoy. The weather, the welcoming people and the incredible range of sea and land activities on o er means not a toddler tantrum in sight.

Words CRYSTAL MCCLORY
We stroll from Gare du Nord Eurostar station to La Fantaisie in Faubourg Montmartre. The sage green facade welcomes with sunny yellow blinds and plants at the entrance. Bienvenue! La Fantaisie, a 5-star hotel designed by Martin Brudnizki, is a lush green oasis in Paris. Relaxing rooms in pastel shades bring nature in. In-room facilities include a bird-shaped corkscrew, kettle, co ee maker, Roberts Radio, and Tuileries Jardin wallpapered wardrobes. Bathrooms have squiggle wooden framed mirrors, glass lampshades, bathrobes, and gorgeous Holidermie products. From the hustle and bustle to individual havens of peace, our boudoir looks down on the planted courtyard.
Lunch is at Golden Poppy restaurant, its glass roof inspired by an antique greenhouse, a wall of botanical paintings above
upholstered sofas, pastel blue chairs and parquet flooring for a modern vintage vibe.
We sit outside on red chairs amongst the greenery of the charming secret garden. The table is beautifully laid; white tablecloth, green and gold cutlery, gold plates, a tasty amuse-bouche served with incredible butter. Starter of moules, sea bass with fennel, and delicious Parker house rolls served warm in a pan. The great thing about fine dining is I can usually mange-tout, Rodney.
Appetite sated, we wander to nearby Passage Verdeau and Jou roy with their fascinating vintage shops. A la Mère de Famille, founded in 1761, transform chocolat into an art form. The Montmartre area is beautiful with lots of stairs. Rue des Martyrs has lovely boutiques, bear right to take the funicular up to avoid even more steps – here are plenty of souvenir shops.
At the top, Square Louis Michel o ers an incredible view of Paris (the fence weighted with padlocks). Sacré-Cœur Basilica looms behind. People clutter up the coloured steps of this place of worship. Inside, visitors admire the golden mosaic, stained glass and light a candle.
The 19th arrondissement has lovely cafes and we promenade past to pastel pink La Maison Rose, notorious for its historic guests – famous artists, writers and singers. Outside is a popular spot for photos and selfies.
At Bar sur le Toit for cocktail hour above the Parisian zinc rooftops. The intimate rooftop bar has a rose wallpaper ceiling reminiscent of a country cottage garden, velvet upholstered barstools, wickerwork armchairs and a jukebox. Surrounded by greenery, the space opens out to a terrace with roses and French garden furniture. With the Sacré-Cœur as a backdrop, a full ‘Flower’ moon in the sky, we indulge in delicious ‘French’ Martini cocktails and snacks.
Heading down the wonderfully scented corridors, papered with green leaf and gold
key wallpaper, to the yellow door of our pied-à-terre. Crisp cotton sheets and green silky eye masks literally bid us a Bonne Nuit, a good night! I’ve packed Innisfree Green Tea Ca eine Bright-Eye Serum as the cold roller ball depu s and is a joy to use.
In the morning, I’m o to the spa. Bird song plays in the lift. Lights twinkle above the steam in the hammam. A restorative dip in a thermal bath, then cold – f.f.f. froid! Back into chaud to warm up. Bliss!
La Fantaisie’s fragranced boujis bougie/ candle smells absolutely delightful of blackcurrant, tomato and cedar. I always pack a delectable Maison Louis Marie fragrance, perfect for travelling – Antidris Cassis Perfume Oil reminds me of La Fantaisie’s scent. Try the Discovery Set. I’m more of a Nouvelle Vague!
After a bu et breakfast, we meander past the golden facade of the Folies Bergère, to nearby Sézane to absorb French cool-girl chic. You can also explore Pigalle, Moulin Rouge, or Museum of Romantic Life in the area.
Lunch is at contemporary, gastronomic restaurant Nectar within Hôtel Maison Mère. A chic home-from-home in the 9th arrondissement with a co-working space and a concept store, with artworks in the art gallery for sale. Creative culinary dishes create a sensory experience. The lunch is magnifique and I highly recommend the rosé champagne.
Next day we take the Metro to Pont de Bir-Hakeim, walk to cobbled street Avenue de Camoëns (join a small polite queue) and take photos with a view of the Ei el Tower as backdrop.
Through the jardins to Place du Trocadéro and down beside the Seine River, enjoying the views. Pont Les Invalides prompts us to sit at a floating bar (we rack up an insane 20,000 steps today).
Saunter in the sunshine past Pont Alexandre 111 to Musée de l'Orangerie (book a ticket to see Monet’s water lily murals) and the oldest Parisian garden Tuileries Jardin, ending up at the glass pyramid of the Louvre. Marin Montagut boutique has marvellous souvenirs on Rue Madame. Enjoy a drink outside iconic Café de Flore, or Les Deux Magots on Boulevard Saint Germain. We walk past the church of SaintGermain-des-Prés, art galleries on Rue de Saint Peres, and dine at Pizza Chic. Où est la bibliotheque? It’s our last day and we head to eclectic boutique Merci for un café in the cafe full of books. Indulge in Pierre Hermé’s macarons or grab a cheeky cake and a ‘baguette magique’ (phallic pastries) at Legay choc. We loved sitting at the crossroads of Rue de Temple, people-watching.
I wish I’d stocked up on La Fantaisie’s fragranced candles but otherwise… Je ne regrette rien!

Travel expert Vicky Babbs o ers up some top tips, plus let’s us in on some fabulous breaks she is planning for her customers
Q What is your favourite part of your job?
A Despite being in the industry for 30 years I still love the research I do for my customers. Every one of us is unique in what we like and we all have a vision of our ‘perfect holiday’, so I do my utmost to fulfil that. It doesn’t matter if it’s seeking out the authentic experiences in a far flung destination or a hotel with specific requirements for a city break. Once I’ve found the perfect option it’s so nice to see the excitement and anticipation they have for their holiday.
Q Why should we book with a travel agent?
A This is a common theme these days and those who were a ected by Covid saw exactly the benefit of booking with an experienced and skilled travel agent. First and foremost, where possible, I like to meet my customers face to face so we can discuss ideas in great detail. This allows me to really get to know them and build a trusting relationship discovering their likes and dislikes so I can tailor an individual itinerary even if it’s a short break. Something that cannot be done with a generic online booking. Secondly, being ATOL protected is critical. If you book things yourself, separately, you will not have this cover at all. Should another Covid hit, subject to FCDO rules, you will be entitled to a refund or amendment as you wish. Also, as we saw with Thomas Cook, if an operator ceases trading then you will be repatriated by the CAA. Without ATOL cover you are not entitled to these. As a Travel Counsellor my customers also have an additional layer of financial protection with our Trust Fund.
Significantly being my own boss, and with over 30 years experience, I am available to my customers at all times in emergencies, as well as having a 24/7 Duty o ce team.
For example, when on my own holiday in Mauritius last year, I had to evacuate a family from Florida due to a hurricane. During Covid one of my families was put into a quarantine hotel in Greece, the situation was not great resulting in me contacting a local deli to deliver regular fresh food and drinks for the family. I was calling them daily to ensure they had everything they needed and to check how they were holding up.
Being skilled in handling everything from Covid, ash clouds, hurricanes, cancelled flights, even reuniting teddies left on planes, and truly caring for your customers is as much a part of the job as planning and booking a holiday.
Q Can you give us some of the best tips for families travelling?
A Make life easy for yourself and always pre-book your seats, book the fast track and priority boarding if available.
If your children are old enough then a Trunki Boostapak is fabulous. It’s a backpack that the kids can pack all their colouring, toys, devices in for the plane, but once you get to the other end it’s a car booster seat for your hire car or transfer company, so will save you money avoiding costs for hiring one.
There are hotels who really have thought about families so they provide the nappies, formula, baby bath, toddler steps etc. If you’re flexible where you holiday with little ones then these resorts make life easy for you as it’s all waiting for you on arrival.
If you’re heading to a major theme park with youngsters still in buggies then get a thick gaudy coloured ribbon to tie to the handle of the buggy. You may be the only buggy in the buggy park when you go into a ride, but when you come out there could be nigh on a hundred so make yours stand out.
Q How can we make our money stretch further?
A Prices have increased since Covid for a number of reasons and where a European beach holiday in a good quality hotel could be bought at a very a ordable price, it’s become a bit of a shock as to how things are in comparison to pre-Covid prices.
If you are happy to travel a little further then you will get much more for your money. I have found that a holiday in Thailand for a family of four came in significantly cheaper than a European holiday in a
similar 5* hotel; in addition eating out is far cheaper with incredible food and choice. In some cases it’s about looking for alternative destinations, for example swap Dubai for Ras Al Khaimah where the AI hotels are far cheaper yet are still beachfront and o er an excellent standard. Obviously avoiding school holidays is a given, but not always possible so it really is about speaking to an expert who will ensure that, together, you find the perfect solution available for your requirements.
Q What interesting holidays have you been planning recently?
A I’m currently planning an ‘authentic’ Thailand holiday with one of my favourite families. It will include them visiting the old capital, jungles, elephant sanctuary and hill tribes. They have two teenagers now, but they’re not into lying on a beach. Last year they had an awesome holiday to Canada taking in the Calgary Stampede, Rockies and finishing with a seaplane and bear watching in a lodge on Vancouver Island.
I am in the process of finalising a luxury Japan holiday, from North to South, and quoting for a detailed Vietnam and Cambodia holiday including an amazing Lower Mekong Cruise from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh.
I have also just finished booking a fabulous family holiday for my VIP customer taking in Venice then a ferry to Croatia and then flying to the outstanding Forte Village in Sardinia.

Parents looking for new ways to keep their children active, happy and engaged in the summer holidays have found the solution in the form of performing arts workshops at Stagecoach Performing Arts in Chingford & Walthamstow.
Their ever popular Summer Holiday Workshop runs this year from Monday 29 July–Friday 2 August and is a fun filled week of children’s performing arts. No previous performance experience is necessary, just enthusiasm for singing, dance and drama and plenty of energy. Workshops ‘When you wish…’ for children 4–7 years and ‘Magical Musicals’ for 6–16 year olds mean there is something for everyone, however old your child.
Children work in age-appropriate classes with their workshop team to devise a musical performance that will be showcased to family and friends on the final day.
Eva Johnson, 12, and her brother Sam, 10, are now Stagecoach regulars after initially attending a couple of years ago. Their mum, Katie Johnson, says: “My children absolutely loved it. They came home after the first day and were full of chatter about the friends they’d made and the fun they’d had.”
Stagecoach Chingford & Walthamstow is where they provide quality part-time training in performing arts for children aged 4-18 years. Established in 1995, their aim is to nurture and develop young talent through drama, singing, acting and dance classes, stretching young imaginations and building confidence. Their classes are educational and,
most importantly, fun, building skills for the stage, and skills for life.
Together with his fantastic teaching team, Matthew Wing runs a busy program for children of all abilities and currently has more than 300 students studying dance, singing and drama weekly.

Here are seven reasons why you should consider Year 7 at Oak-Tree Schools
Year 7 at the Oak-Tree Schools o ers a tailored educational journey accessible to pupils of all abilities. The intimate class sizes ensure that each student receives more individual attention and personalised feedback, which is particularly important as they move from primary to secondary education. Here are seven key reasons why Year 7 at the Oak-Tree Schools stands out:
The Oak-Tree Schools’ Year 7 classes o er a tailored educational experience that ensures pupils of all abilities make the maximum progress. The small class sizes allow for more individual attention and personalised
feedback, which is crucial at the start of the secondary education journey.
The curriculum in Year 7 is broad and balanced, providing a strong foundation across the key subjects such as English, mathematics and science, as well as o ering more breadth in subjects such as French, Spanish, art, drama, history, geography, computer science and ICT. This variety ensures that pupils can explore their interests and strengths in many areas.
The Oak-Tree Schools pride themselves on their outstanding pastoral care, ensuring that each pupil is closely supported.
The pastoral programme in Year 7 helps pupils adapt to the new challenges of senior education whilst maintaining their well-being and enjoying their learning.
The Oak-Tree Schools maintain high academic standards with a focus on achieving excellent outcomes. Year 7 pupils are encouraged to understand their target grades, respond to the daily feedback provided by their teachers and work towards challenging goals with regular assessments to track their progress.
Year 7 pupils have access to a wide range of extra-curricular activities that enhance their school experience. These include sports, arts, academic clubs and more, which help develop a well-rounded character and provide opportunities to learn new skills. There are also overseas residential trips available, such as skiing in Italy or visiting the WWI battlefields in Belgium.
Opportunities for personal development and leadership are encouraged from Year 7. Pupils can join the School Council or become House Captains, developing their leadership skills early in their senior education.
Starting a new school can be a daunting step for young children, but at the Oak-Tree Schools they make this transition as smooth as possible. They ensure that every pupil feels part of the family as soon as they join. They provide ongoing support to help pupils adjust both academically and socially. This approach not only eases the transition, but also sets the stage for a successful and enjoyable educational journey at the Oak-Tree Schools.

James Hunt , co-founder of Durden & Hunt, o ers his mid-year report on the property market and looks at what’s to come
It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through 2024, with summer here and the school holidays fast approaching. As we look back it’s clear there have been many positives so far this year, with increased activity from both buyers and sellers fuelling a competitive market.
Although it would be nice to be able to guarantee this will continue now, with the general election taking place, it’s impossible to know for certain how the second half will look. Rumoured policy changes and reforms can bring about a nervousness for both homeowners and buyers that are yet to solidify their plans; however recent Rightmove research suggested that 95% of people planning to move home have said the election will not a ect their plans, which is somewhat reassuring.
We must remember the housing market has faced, and overcome, a number of unprecedented obstacles over recent years, from the global pandemic to increased mortgage rates, and although at the time they can prove challenging, overall the market has kept moving and changing with
the times and trends. We’d hope the election would prove no di erent; in fact Rightmove’s data shows that after both the 2015 and 2019 elections there was an increase in market activity, with demand holding steady pre-election and a boost seen once the results were in.
We appreciate there are many unknowns so there’s no time like the present to reach out to your trusted agent, such as myself and my team, to discuss your plans and the potential value in your home.

Q Before working at your business, what was your working background?
A I had various jobs before becoming a solicitor. My first job was at McDonalds (I still give it credit for making me more confident as I was quite a shy teenager). I also worked on a legal Helpline.
Q What inspired you to work at your business?
A My sister-in-law was studying law and I looked through her textbooks and found it fascinating (she is now a barrister). I signed up for a law conversion course and the rest, as they say, is history. On my first day working in a law firm, I knew
it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The day went by so quickly! I was constantly engaged. At the time, I assumed that feeling would go away – but it never has.
Q What do you think makes you di erent?
A I think most lawyers are cut from the same cloth, with a hardworking ethos, a commitment to client care and passion for what they do. In that way, I don’t think I am too di erent to my colleagues. My top traits are that I’m friendly, approachable, number orientated and with an attention to detail – I think that last one in particular comes in handy for my area of law.
Q How was 2023 for you?
A It was a great year for me and the firm. The Wills, Trusts and Probate team at Attwaters Jameson Hill has gone from strength to strength. As we have grown substantially, so too has our breadth of our knowledge.
Q Have you introduced anything new for 2024?
A We are looking at introducing more specialisms within the team and across the firm. This includes, for example, advising on foreign estates, charity law and estate planning for business owners. This means prioritising areas like lifetime trusts, among other things.
Q On a personal level, what are your hopes and dreams for 2024?
A I love to travel. I don’t have anything booked yet, but I hope this is the year we go on holiday to Peru. Machu Picchu is definitely top of my bucket list.
Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year?
A Simply spending time with family and friends. Attwaters Jameson Hill has a great work-life balance – we have just been listed in the Times Best Places to Work 2024. Not having to compromise on my personal life allows me to do my best work

Q What is your working background?
A I began as a lifeguard in Greece for the summer months and gaining my ski instructors qualification during the winter months in France. However after a bad skiing accident my career as a ski instructor was over before it began and so I took myself o on gap year travelling through China, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. Returning to the UK, I knew the travel industry was for me and so worked as a sales advisor on High Street Kensington for one of the UK’s top luxury travel companies for 3 years, before a further 3 years at one of the UK’s leading concierge companies where I worked for a further 3 years in their travel department also.
Q What inspired you to launch your business?
A I always like to set myself a challenge and not wanting to get into management, I couldn’t see where I was to progress in my previous roles. So 10 years ago now, I took the step
to start my own travel company. I also saw a gap in the market, where rather than just being treated like another number, I could o er that personal experience for people when booking their holidays.
Q What makes you di erent?
A For me it is o ering clients something that they couldn’t book themselves. From exclusive special o ers to complimentary added extras (such as a bottle of champagne in their room upon arrival or a room upgrade). With my contacts throughout the world I am also able to o er unique experiences that create memories to last a lifetime (afternoon tea with royalty in India and sunrise yoga at the top of the Empire State building in New York to name just two). I also o er a completely personalised experience. It’s not o the shelf for me, each quote is tailored to match exactly what each and every individual is looking to get from their time away. I also understand that people lead busy lives and so I also o er complete flexibility for my clients too – be it an early call before work or a late night Whatsapp conversation to discuss their travel plans. There’s no 9-5 here and my clients are always very well looked after. I am proud to have won multiple awards for the service I o er.
Q How was 2023 for you?
A It was a record breaking year for me revenue wise and I was delighted to have scooped both Luxury Travel Designer of the Year and Luxury Travel Big Idea of the Year with my self published book ‘Never A Wasted Life’. Rather than just giving people a business card, I wrote my own book in 2023, to share my story and how I can help with their travel plans. I was also lucky enough to visit Necker Island as a guest and spend time with Sir Richard Branson, who is an inspiration to me personally too.
Q Anything new for 2024?
A Figures are 45% up on last year, however I am also delighted to have obtained a number of new high net worth clients, celebrities and sports personalities from throughout the UK and as far as New York, Dubai and Sydney.
Q What are your hopes for 2024?
A I am going to continue to expand my own personal knowledge and become the go-to travel designer for luxury holidays.
Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year?
A I am looking to take some time o over the summer and spending three weeks island hopping in the Maldives with my family.
Uncovering more about the Essex designer who is taking the jewellery world by storm why everyone is talking about…
“The collection combines her love for vintage, colour and sparkle”
Award-winning jewellery and watch designer Jane Hebden began her career in the industry over a decade ago and has since gone on to launch new accessories brand, Amelia Scott, in June 2023. The brand is set to become a go-to for gorgeous gifts, beautifully handcrafted jewellery made with planet conscious materials featuring wearable, unexpected colour palettes and iconic motifs.
Previously Head of Creative at British watch brand Olivia Burton, with pieces she designed in the likes of Selfridges and Harvey Nichols, Essex-based Jane was awarded Retail Jewellers 30 Under 30 Rising Star Award in 2020, along with several Watch Pro Awards for other styles she designed over the years.
Jane joined Olivia Burton as their first employee in 2013, being part of their rapid growth journey to the Movado Group acquisition in 2017. Jane worked across various global creative projects for Olivia Burton over the span of her career, notably launching jewellery as a new product category in 2016. She played an integral role for the design and launch of the brand’s first flagship boutique in Covent Garden, spearheaded a viral brand collaboration on the iconic Cadbury Roses Tin and launched the brands first TVC in 2021.
After leaving Olivia Burton in 2022 she felt uninspired by the sea of minimalist jewellery brands on the market, so Jane
decided to use her 10 years of industry experience to start designing pieces that reflect her own personal style and the fun she loves to have with accessories and colour.
The Amelia Scott collection combines her love for vintage, colour, and sparkle and encourages customers to express their individuality and embrace the wonderful world of colour. The business has been an instant hit with press and seen rapid growth since its omnichannel launch in June 2023 and will continue to expand with key wholesale partners and pop-up experiences in 2024.
