LETTER Editor’s

ABSOLUTELY’S October issue highlights

A1

real perk of this job over the years has been the opportunity to go into the homes of the rich and famous. I have even had the pleasure to track the building of a three storey, seven bedroom home right from scratch –literally, I first visited when it was a crumbling heap, deciding to do an on-going story on its transformation. It was an eye-opening experience of the skill of architects and house builders alike. Celebrity homes are always intriguing, hence why so many Instagram handles have cropped up purely to follow renovations of those in the public eye. I was often terrified to touch anything as most were immaculate (probably the result of having staff on site 24/7) – and yet, I was always happy to return to my little flat back in the day.

I have moved on to a three bedroom home these days, but the same feeling remains: I just love being in my house. It is always a work in progress, though, which is why when Absolutely Home comes around I am excited. This month we visit an Essex institution for design advice, see how Beth Chatto was ahead of her time, and look for major makeover advice from BoConcept. Home sweet home indeed.

The visionary behind this spectacle, Michael Flatley, revives and updates Lord of the Dance for a new generation of fans. It reached the world stage after his show-stealing performance at Eurovision 1994. Lord of the Dance has shattered records and garnered unparalleled accolades worldwide, catapulting Irish dance to new heights and touching the hearts of millions. Since its premiere over 25 years ago, Flatley has seen global success for the iconic show that combines high-energy Irish dancing, original music, storytelling, and sensuality. Flatley is busy preparing a celebration for his beloved creation. The Irish dancing icon embarked on his final tour in 2016, performing on stage for the last time at Caesar’s Colosseum in Las Vegas. For the SENSES

Jen Fuller, founder of Etta Loves, on creating a unique business, collaborating with an acclaimed artist and a ection for Essex

Etta Loves, the home of sensory baby essentials driven by scientific research, recently announced a new global collaboration with artist, Camille Walala. Available now, the Etta Loves x Walala Studio collection includes a range of baby sensory items including muslins, playmats, blankets and toys, all with distinctive designs that have been specifically created with infant vision at their heart. To find out more, Absolutely ventured to Essex to sit down with Etta Loves founder, Jen Fuller.

Q When did you first meet Camille Walala and why was her work perfect for a collaboration?

A My first direct encounter with Camille’s work was when we took my daughter Etta, when she had just turned two, to the Now Gallery in London to see one of her exhibitions. It was so playful and fun for all of us, and really stuck in my memory, so when I was thinking about our new artist collaboration I reached out to Camille and Julia at Walala Studio. They were interested and a few weeks later we had a video call to talk through how it could work. Her work is perfect because it uses bold, playful lines and shapes in a way that sparks joy – we need that boldness to enable us to weave in the science of infant vision and we also like to bring joy to families through our range.

Q How long has the collaboration been in the making?

A It’s been over a year, but January was when we kicked o the creative process at full speed.

Q What will the collection entail?

A The first phase of the collection is the sensory essentials that people love and expect from Etta Loves – so sensory muslins, a reversible playmat, blanket and hanging squares. The second phase, launching later in the year, is some exciting products completely new to Etta Loves.

Q Do you have a favourite piece?

A I’m not sure if I do to be honest as I equally love both patterns – the Mono (for newborn to 4 months) and Shapes (for 5-12 months) – so the products with both of these on are extraspecial in my opinion. I think the blanket will be getting a lot of love this winter as it’s both patterns and super soft and supersized too for all the snuggles and sensory stimulation.

Q Are you keen on further collaborations?

A Absolutely. At Etta Loves, I’m always looking for product and pattern collaborations as it’s important that we keep bringing stylish, unique designs to our customers and retailers, but I’m also excited about getting our scientific prints out onto other products in the future too.

Q Etta Loves has also been certified B Corp recently – what does that mean to you?

A It’s a sign of our current and future commitment to looking after the planet and people through the choices we make as a small business. I have always made sure we’ve made the best choices possible with our resources, as I couldn’t design and produce things for the next generation without protecting the planet for them at the same time.

Q When you first came up with the idea for the brand, could you have imagined how successful it would be?

A I really couldn’t! That lightbulb moment was exciting to me, but I had no idea whether it was as exciting to other people. It’s a funny thought as perception and reality are often quite di erent as although we’ve done amazing things and are growing in so many ways, it’s still a very hard time for small businesses at the moment, so I hope our passion and unique approach to design continues to keep us growing.

Q Why do you think Etta Loves took o ?

A I suspect it’s because being a parent can be extremely hard, and we make it that bit easier. When we launched, and even now I would say, no one else puts the science of infant sight onto everyday products to support vision and make moments easier for parents at the same time. Who wouldn’t want the best for their

“We make being a parent that little bit easier”

baby, the confidence that they’re supporting them perfectly and some extra calm for them too? I certainly wanted it when Etta was a baby and struggled to find it, so the idea was formed and launched when she was nine months old.

Q When you launched, were you completely di erent from anything else out there?

A Yes absolutely, and we still are. There were some toys using black and white as that research has been available for decades, but no one had either used the right scales for evolving vision, nor had they thought to put them onto things you need anyway as a new parent. I was passionate to not create another thing that sat in the basket of toys and didn’t add anything new.

Q Are you constantly looking into the science to keep evolving?

A We certainly are. We work alongside our consultant Orthoptist, who has been with

me from the beginning, and we also have a scientific partnership with The Baby Lab at The University of Sussex, so the combination enables us to stay ahead of all the research, test designs on babies so that we can optimise them before they launch, and continue to design to what babies can see but also what they like to look at shape and pattern wise.

Q How does running Etta Loves fit in with family life in Essex?

A It’s both positive to our family and negative, as I suspect most self-employed people will find. It’s very hard to get a break, I managed one day out of the planned week away this year as something inevitably came up that I needed to deal with, so being able to actually switch o and be fully present is a challenge. However, it does o er flexibility so I never have to miss a sports day or school play, or rarely a pick-up or drop o , which my girls do appreciate.

Q Do you have 3-4 spots in the county you love visiting?

A I am really enjoying Dedham at the moment as we’ve started trying to get the girls out paddle-boarding with us at weekends, and I love the sea at Leigh on Sea coupled with an afternoon at the arcades in Southend. My happy place in nature is either RHS Hyde Hall or the grounds at Castle Hedingham.

Q What does the future hold in store?

A The million dollar question. Who really knows is my honest answer, but I hope it’s more unique and innovative products, in particular looking beyond babies’ first birthday. More arty collaborations to help parents retain their sense of style and self, and more and more families discovering the Etta Loves visual magic and supporting my small but special business.

HALLOWEEN

HORROR

Uncover another side to Essex this month, one full of ghosts and ghouls

Essex is blessed with history and heritage. This Halloween take yourself on a journey into the county’s past and discover its unexpected ghostly goingson. From witches to Roman centurions, Visit Essex provides the lowdown on where to go and what to do.

Bewitched by Manningtree

The pretty market town of Manningtree was the home to the self-titled ‘Witchfinder General’ Matthew Hopkins. Hopkins and his assistant John Stearne are believed to have sentenced nearly 300 people to death in their time as witch hunters. Many of the witches were tried by the banks of the River Stour and legend has it that Hopkins’ ghost is thought to wander around the pond in the nearby village of Mistley. Visitors can retrace Hopkins’ steps with a walking tour of the area ‘Walking with Witches’, which begins on Manningtree High Street and winds itself through the town. The walk also passes ‘Old Knobbley’, an ancient and gnarled oak tree, thought to be over 800-years-old. The walk also passes the site of where Hopkins was buried. The historical walking tour is available free to download from the Visit Essex website.

Haunted Happenings

It’s a well-known fact that Romans ruled these parts 2,000 years ago. However, the presence of one of them is believed to still haunt the Strood, the causeway which links Mersea Island to the mainland. Many people have said they’ve seen a Roman Centurion marching over the Strood in the dead of night.

A much shier ghost inhabits the impressive keep at wedding and events venue, Hedingham Castle. Although no-one is believed to have

seen a ghost, a snapshot from a wedding photo shone a light on a figure that once used to live in the historic attraction.

Family Fun Halloween Events

There are also plenty of spooky Halloween events in October for the whole family to enjoy. Children can get their thrills and spills at Adventure Island, Southend, this half term. From 26 October to 2 November, Fright Fantastic returns to the theme park. Children can dress up in costumes, hop on their favourite rollercoasters and enjoy spooky entertainment. Entry to the theme park is free, day bands to go on all rides all day are priced at £20.

Also in half term, Colchester Zoo is hosting their very own Shriek Week, a week filled with “fang-tastic” themed daytime activities. Little ones can transform into scary witches at the face painting station or take a ride on the Lost Madagascar Road Train and listen to a spooky story during a trip around the lake. Running from 26 October to 3 November, the event is free to Zoo Passholders. For non-passholders, admission fees apply (tickets from £17.85 for children and from £24.23 for adults).

Down Hall, a large country mansion on the Essex/Herts border, has plenty of spinetingling events happening this Halloween. Join them for their free event, A-Live on the Lawn, on Friday 25 October for music, provided by their resident DJ, plus delicious food and cocktails. Or, if you want to dive into the horror theme, they’ll be putting on a Halloween Cinema on the Lawn, a thrilling weekend filled with family-friendly Halloween movies and spooktacular thrillers. The whole family can enjoy a Halloween-themed afternoon tea from 25 October to 1 November, with a ghoulishly delicious spread of eerie treats and wicked

delights, £40 for adults midweek, £42.50 on the weekend. Children charged at 50%.

For more Halloween-themed afternoon teas, or overnight stays, head to Talliston House and Gardens in Great Dunmow. From 14 October to 3 November, the house will be dressed for the spooky season. They have a Haunted Bedroom, which the bravest visitors can stay in overnight – if they dare! Stays at Talliston start from £145 per room per night.

For a unique Halloween experience, head to Little Easton Manor, Great Dunmow, for a murder mystery dinner. This high-quality, interactive dinner, direct from London’s West End, is sure to get everyone’s pulses racing. Can you figure out who the murderer is before it’s too late? Tickets are £50 each.

If a scare-inducing trail is more your thing, look no further than Colchester Zoo. The Trail of Terror takes over the zoo on various dates in October, full of scares at every turn. Tackle your way through the trail, encountering rustling bushes, masked monsters and screaming scarers. Once you’ve made it through, reward yourself with live entertainment, delicious food and plenty of drinks. Tickets start at £24pp (dates: 18, 19, 23, 25, 26, 28 and 30 October).

Also in Colchester, the Town Hall is hosting a ‘Beware the Scare’ event from 25 October to 2 November. Suitable for ages 16+, take a trip through maze-like corridors and atmospheric rooms to experience an immersive scare event not for the faint hearted. Tickets from £20, under18s must be accompanied by an adult.

For a family friendly Halloween trail experience, head to Romford Shopping Hall for a half term Halloween Trick or Treat Hunt. On 29 October, children can take part in a super “scary” trick or treat

hunt, visiting shops to collect goodies including toys and sweets. There will be “not so scary” animatronics and children can also make a pit stop at Jungle Hair for a tattoo plus face painting at £3 per child (additional charge). Pre-book a place for free or pay £5 on the day.

Pop on your Halloween costume and head to Southend for their annual Halloween Parade. On 26 October, the local community will come together for the parade, with an array of Halloween costumes, bright colours, music and dancing and much more. Join the parade for free, or you can watch the spectacle go by from the sidelines, also for free.

Castles are some of the spookiest places to visit at Halloween, with their ancient history and rumours of ghosts wandering the halls. This year, Brightworth’s School of Magic returns to Hedingham Castle in Halstead. Young witches and

wizards can learn about magic wands, brew potions, practise mystical spells and see enchanted animals. Runs from 27 October to 2 November, children’s tickets are £21.95, adult tickets are priced at £13.95 and under 3s go free. Another event you won’t want to miss this Halloween season is the Halloween Pumpkin Trail and Catapult Event at Mountfitchet Castle, Stansted. From Saturday 26 October to 3 November, children can search for hidden pumpkins around the castle and House on the Hill Museum and will win a prize for completing the trail. There will also be a unique medieval catapult firing where pumpkins will be launched at witches and skeletons daily at 2pm. Adult tickets are £17, children’s tickets (3-14 years) are £13.50. Why not spend Halloween night exploring Sa ron Walden Museum by torchlight. Complete the twilight riddle trail and try your hand at moonlight activities. This event is suitable for families, is £2.40 per child and normal Museum admission applies.

Absolutely meets BarbaraHanly, the founder of Soopa, to discover how the pet treat brand was born out of undying a ection

They say that some people come into your life for a reason, but for former dog groomer

Barbara Hanly, it was a tiny 1.7kg Chihuahua X Jack Russell called Lily who was to become the catalyst to transforming a kitchen table idea into a successful business.

Barbara is the founder of Soopa, an awardwinning pet treat brand, celebrating canine health and well-being through a growing range of delicious plant-based recipes inspired by her beloved dog Lily coupled with her experience as a dog groomer.

“While working as a dog groomer, I was shocked at the amount of obesity, skin and health issues I saw in dogs,” she explains. “I started looking into typical ingredients added to dog food and treats. I realised then that I did not want Lily to consume all these nasty additives and fillers and that I could do better, so I set about researching and baking.”

With Lily and her friends as eager chief taste-testers, word soon spread through friends, then friends of friends, and soon Barabra was inundated by pet parents wanting to buy her range of delicious superfood treats for their fur babies. “It was then I began to realise that maybe I was onto something special, and if Lily and her friends, old and

BARBARA WITH HAMMIE

young, big and small, approved, then this could become a successful business.”

In 2013, Barbara o cially launched Soopa, and the company has already won multiple awards. It is regularly featured in the media and currently sells across the UK, Europe, Southeast Asia, and, more recently, the USA. However, Barbara has never strayed far from her original vision despite their commercial success. “I’ve always stayed true to my original quest to create delicious treats which combine human-grade superfoods that taste good and are good for your dog’s health,” she says.

“For example, we include cranberries in a couple of our recipes. Did you know that cranberries are an excellent source

of vitamin C, known for its positive impact on digestive health and boosting immunity? Every recipe we create is designed to benefit your dog’s health and well-being.”

With a growing range of tasty o erings, the Soopa range allows pet parents to shop by age and suitability with a focus on o ering pets with restrictive health conditions, including obesity and low immunity, flavourful treats that all dogs can enjoy without compromise.

“I am always thinking about new recipes and product ideas – it’s absolutely my favourite part of my role,” Barbara smiles. “Initially, I’ll present my ideas to my team and then decide which one to develop further. Once samples are ready, we do the all-important taste test phase with our in-house canine team. After packaging is designed and printed and production is complete, you are looking at six months from start to finish. We have just released our latest range, the 'Cosy Collection', embracing traditional seasonal flavours, including Pumpkin and Cranberry, with an autumnal flavour twist, especially for this winter season.”

As an ethical pet brand, Soopa ensures that all their treats are made to human-grade standard “because we wouldn’t feed our dogs something that we couldn’t eat ourselves” – a statement that was taken quite literally when former ITV’s This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby tasted their papaya dog

chews live on the show and approved! The brand’s range of dental sticks and healthy bites are also now packaged in their 100% paper-recyclable flow-wrap packaging. But their moral standing doesn’t finish there. “We support Dogs Trust Ireland by sharing their weekly dog spotlight on our social media to help find them homes,” Barbara explains. “We have 'Soopa Heroes of the Month', where we ask people to nominate their chosen charity via our website and Instagram posts, and we pick one at random and donate £100 to that charity.”

This love of dogs is intrinsic in Barbara’s approach to business philosophy and their success, but dogs have always played a big personal part in her life. “I’ve always been a huge animal lover,” she smiles. “My first dog was a Yorkshire terrier, Beauty, whom I absolutely adored. Beauty gave me a lot of stability during a di cult childhood when I was bullied at school. My dog Lily came into my life when a friend rescued her as a stray and was trying to find her a new loving home. The first time I met her, she jumped straight into my lap, and in that instant, I knew she was coming home with me! Lily is a huge part of the Soopa story. Lily sadly passed at the end of 2022, and I still miss her every day.”

Barbara was, however, to find another sweet soul to help ease the pain of losing Lily in the form of Hammie. “My heart was broken after losing Lily, so I wasn’t even thinking about another dog when I met a lovely lady in France who rescues dogs from China and re-homes them in Europe. She showed me a photo of Hammie the night he was found, all alone on the side of the road, and a part of me knew I had found a new soulmate. I have a feeling Lily may have even sent Hammie my way! Hammie has definitely helped heal my heart. He loves his new life on the road in the west of Ireland.”

Mersea Island is a special place with beaches, creeks, boardwalks, sailing, oysters and a great community. It’s the ideal time to visit, too, as they have had a refresh of a couple of the rooms, including the Mehalah room, which o ers a view to the sea and features an en-suite bathroom with walkin shower, and decorated with Sanderson and Zo any luxury wallpaper and fabrics. The menu changes seasonally throughout the year and features much of the fantastic produce we’re surrounded by. There is also Baker’s Oyster Gin, created by owner Piers Baker in collaboration with Fishers of Aldeburgh and Richard Haward Oysters, meaning they can create their own Oyster Martini.

CHURCH STREET TAVERN churchstreettavern.co.uk

Church Street Tavern in Colchester was opened in February 2014 as a tavern with ground floor bar and lounge and first floor restaurant serving simple, freshly prepared, wholesome food. Coaching inns and taverns are a rich part of our heritage with taverns springing up at a time when there were no telephones, social media or other ways we communicate today. If you wanted to do business, politics or socialise with people, you went to a tavern. It seemed right, then, to give this handsome building, built as a

Savings Bank in about 1852, the name. Expect a seasonal changing menu with meat from British farms, day boat fish and produce from East Anglia and around these Isles. Their steak is aged for a minimum of 45 days and is from rare breed animals around the UK. On Sunday they roast, and you can also enjoy a lighter bar menu upstairs at lunch or pre-theatre. Look out, too, for the lounge area downstairs, which has had a mini makeover.

SARAH CHAPMAN

Stem Cell Collagen Facial with LED

t’s a Friday afternoon and I’m in London to visit Sarah Chapman’s Skinesis Clinic. I enter through the sleek store on Pavilion Road, going upstairs to the luxurious space. Super facialist Sarah Chapman has a celebrity client list as long as my arm. Known for creating glowy skin magic, Meghan Markle, Victoria Beckham, and Naomi Watts all have her on speed dial. I’m booked in with the lovely Lauren for the Stem Cell Collagen Facial with LED. The treatment room is cosy and Lauren invites me to relax on the bed. She starts with Ultimate Cleanse (an omega-rich balm), followed by Rapid Radiance (an intensive detoxifying treatment). My skin feels clean and hydrated. Next up is a lactic peel, with steam extract to help de-clog my pores and banish dead skin. To help boost collagen, Lauren microneedles my skin, preparing it for the Platinum Pep8 Stem Cell Serum. With gardenia stem cells and hyaluronic hydrators, the formulation improves skin health and delivers a glowy complexion. Next, I relax with the 3D Moisture Infusion Mask, followed by a dreamy facial massage. Finally, Lauren puts me under an LED lamp, with blue, red, and near-infrared light. “Your skin is a little bit red, but a good red,” she says. She’s right, she’s definitely achieved the signature Sarah Chapman glow and my skin is plump and radiant for days afterwards. And the best bit? I can keep the glow going with Sarah Chapman’s new Clinic Range products at home. EDITOR’S PICK

FURNITURE PART OF THE

Absolutely meets Holly Ambrose, interior designer at Roomes Furniture & Interiors , the long-standing independent shop based in Upminster

Q Pre-Roomes, what was your background in interior design?

A I have always been passionate about fashion and creativity, and developed my skills while working at a furniture and decor brand where I worked my way up to Visual Merchandiser and eventually joined the Interior Design team. It allowed me to gain valuable experience that I still use every day in my current role at Roomes Furniture & Interiors. When I visit clients’ homes, I know what questions to ask and how to make the most of the visit.

Before joining Roomes Furniture & Interiors as the Interior Designer, I had my own interior design business which allowed me to build my client base, gain a better understanding of the business and expand my portfolio.

Q Do you think there is a typical Holly Ambrose design style?

A I feel like I have two signature styles. I’ve always said that I would love to own two houses so that I can decorate each one in completely different styles. One style that I’m drawn to is elegant, understated and minimalist, with

neutral colour schemes including whites, creams and natural tones for a clean look. The other style I’m known for is characterised by clashing colours, textures and patterns, creating bold and vibrant designs that reflect the client’s personality. I’m always attracted to quirky patterns and designs.

Q How long have you worked at Roomes?

A I have been working at Roomes Furniture & Interiors for just over two years and we are really working towards building up the interior design aspect of the business. Roomes Furniture & Interiors is a highly respected name across Essex and beyond, and has been established since 1888. It is a great company to work for as the company genuinely cares about your development and wants you to succeed. I feel empowered and super lucky to have been able to put my own stamp on the interior design service, bringing it to life. The interior design service has been running at Roomes Furniture & Interiors for four years, so I’m excited about its growth and the prospect of building a team as our client base grows.

HOLLY AMBROSE
Holly oversees interior design projects at Roomes, which has seen her work on several Essex homes.

Q How do you work with clients?

A The way in which we usually work is that I will go and visit the client in their home, which allows me to conduct a site measurement, take photos of the rooms, and see the client in their natural environment at ease. We talk through likes and dislikes, personal style, and what they want and need from the room. Clients don’t always know what they like, but it’s good to know what they don’t like to help me to build a scheme. I will then go away and put a design together including colour schemes, wall coverings, furniture including upholstery and cabinets, and all of the finishing touches such as lighting and accessories. I will then present the design to the client and once finalised, place the order and coordinate all of the deliveries. We like to work together with the client throughout the whole process.

“People are leaning towards a much softer feel at home”

Q What different kinds of interior design projects have you been involved in at Roomes?

A Now that I have been here for a couple of years, I have certainly met so many different clients from all walks of life. You never know what kind of property you’re going to be visiting and working on, which is really exciting. We have worked on all sorts of projects, whether it is a full house renovation for a busy family or just revamping one room. We work on projects of all different scales and all types of properties, including flats, new builds and old historic Victorian homes. A project I am currently working on is an amazing cottage that has got dark beams and quirky doors – I’m really excited to see the final look and bring my ideas to life.

Q If you can, what one project will always stand out for you and why?

A There is one that comes to me straight away, which was a client at Roomes Furniture & Interiors that was open to having a bold, bright and quirky design. Back in the day, Roomes Furniture & Interiors would always follow more of a traditional design, whereas now we are much more contemporary. This was one of my first projects at Roomes Furniture &

Interiors, and the client was really open to my ideas, including clashing patterns and prints. We worked on an open plan living and dining room as well as a separate living room and bedroom as well. I remember a really beautiful headboard we did in a black and pink floral fabric. It was so amazing to work on this job as upon meeting the client she was a bit sceptical of how it was going to look, but she really trusted my vision and ended up loving it.

Q What kind of trends are we seeing in interior design as we head into the autumn months?

A The main trends coming in for autumn 2024 are lots of earthy tones such as burnt oranges, chocolate and truffle browns to create that cosy feel. We are still seeing rooms decorated in a trend we call colour drenching, which is where you see all walls including the ceilings painted in navy or emerald green for example, to create a dark and moody feel. We also see lots of earthy tones still coming through within fluffy and fur fabrics. We have just had a beautiful accent chair that has come into Roomes Furniture & Interiors that is in a really soft fluffy fabric, which feels like it is giving you a hug each time you sit on it. We are seeing lots of bouclé as well. Before, we were seeing a lot of grey, minimalist looks whereas people are now leaning towards a much softer feel to their home where you can feel really calm and relaxed.

Q For anyone embarking on a revamp in the home, what advice would you offer them?

A Enjoy every second of it… Creating a space that you love to be in is such a luxury and fun experience. Trust the process. I always say to clients before I meet them that Pinterest is the best source of inspiration, even if you don’t know where to start. It has thousands of ideas which will help you to focus your inspiration. Here at Roomes Furniture & Interiors, we create mood boards and floor plans that are both 2D and 3D, and help to bring the vision of the dream space to life. Mood boards are great as they show the colour scheme and furniture inspiration. Floor plans are also helpful as they show the client my suggested room layouts and they can see exactly how all the furniture can fit in the room to scale.

FLOWER POWER

Absolutely takes a visit to Beth Chatto’s Gardens to see how green space benefi ts everyone’s mental health

Beth Chatto was a pioneer of sustainable, ecological planting, following (and widely credited with founding) the ethos of right plant, right place to create her garden in Elmstead Market, Essex, which showcases a vast range of plants suited to different growing conditions. Her success growing a vast range of unusual plants was underpinned by husband Andrew Chatto’s extensive research into the location and conditions of plants growing naturally in the wild.

BETH’S WORLD-FAMOUS GARDENS

What sets Beth’s garden apart is that it works with nature, rather than against. Plants are chosen to survive and thrive in the given conditions and this method brings a sense of equilibrium and serenity that can be felt throughout. Plants in the Gravel Garden are never irrigated but are naturally adapted to suit

the dry conditions, looking their best or relying on their natural coping mechanisms even when water is scarce. The Water Gardens are fed by a natural spring. Descending into their calming space on a warm day is like entering an oasis. The Woodland Garden offers a generous canopy of oaks, with a woodland floor filled with plants that thrive in the dappled shade.

Also within the garden, a special place for quiet contemplation, the Reflection Garden, can be found at the edge of the woodland where the secluded spot invites visitors to switch off from distractions, to rest, reflect and rejuvenate to help lower blood pressure and stress levels.

THE POWER OF PLANTS

Introducing a larger mix of plant varieties will increase visual interest and complexity of benefits to enhance biodiversity. Many of us can feel helpless in the face of global warming, which is not good for our collective

Beth

Chatto knew the power of gardening on mental health

mental health. By nurturing a plant or plants, be that in a pot on a balcony or window box or planted into a plot of ground or garden, you are providing:

• Carbon sequestration – reducing air pollution;

• Increased oxygen;

• Food for visiting insects in the form of nectar, pollen, leaves and seeds that in turn become food for birds, amphibians, etc. Seeing insects go about their lives can distract us from our own worries and concerns, giving a sense of peace and security;

• A breeding site for insects – after all, a beautiful butterfly must go through being a hungry caterpillar first. Some of our endangered wildlife needs to have only certain plants to reproduce;

• Beauty and interest – colour therapy is known to have beneficial effects on the mind, so being with plants and their kaleidoscope of colours can bring us joy and wonder.

THE MICRO WORLD

Microbes from plants and soil, in the air we breathe, are beneficial for our own ‘good’ bacteria. Microbes, and the roles they play in our ecosystems and our lives, is a relatively new and exciting area of study.

Beth herself knew the power of gardening on mental health, often likening it to an almost religious experience, says Matthew Beales, Retail and Events Manager, Beth Chatto Gardens. “To look after a garden, you must become absorbed in its natural processes and build a relationship with it, learning its climate, soil and which plants are happiest growing there. Being connected to the seasons gives one a sense of being grounded and part of something bigger,” he adds.

Visitors to the garden often describe it as ‘my safe place’. “The garden has a calmness and peacefulness about it that helps to soothe the soul” says visitor Russ Fairley. “A wander through the greenery and past beautiful flowers always helps to ease a busy mind.”

The garden is hosting a takeover day for local mental health charity Mid and North East Essex Mind on Sunday 6 October. The day will include special talks on the benefits of gardening on mental health and the healing power of plants. You will also hear from Mid and North East Essex Mind on how to take care of your own wellbeing.

REDEFINE

When it comes to modern living, BoConcept’s latest collection doesn’t just set the bar; it redefines it. This new collection offers more than simply furniture – it’s an invitation to create a home that speaks to your own style by fusing customisable design with Scandinavian sophistication. From sculptural coffee tables to iconic dining chairs and luxe sofas, BoConcept’s new products can transform your space. And it’s now easier than ever to put together a cohesive style with their free interior design service.

SHOWCASING ELEGANCE: The Bellagio Sofa

The Bellagio sofa, designed by Anders Nørgaard, exudes elegance and cosiness. Channel stitching is becoming more and more popular, and the Bellagio uses it as inspiration to create something genuinely unique out of a classic silhouette. The Bellagio is anything but ordinary thanks to the depth and intricacy that the stitching adds, creating a visual rhythm that captivates you.

SCULPTURAL SOPHISTICATION:

Introducing the Tivoli Coffee Table

BoConcept has introduced Tivoli, a stunning line of sculpture-inspired coffee tables that draw inspiration from the classic elegance of travertine. Tivoli’s travertineeffect surface oozes elegance, and its Roman architectural character lends a hint of old sophistication to modern homes. Designer Morten Georgsen approached Tivoli with a creative playfulness reminiscent of his early Playdough modelling days. According to Georgsen: “It was a very creative process because we were sculpting from 3D designs in a very free way.” Coffee tables made with this technique are not only useful but also artistic creations. Any room is elevated by Tivoli’s striking design, which turns it into an elegant and stylish gallery.

DINING REDEFINED: The Santiago Table

Another standout piece from the collection is the Santiago dining table, with its enticing curves and exquisite craftsmanship. The round table, which can accommodate up to eight people comfortably, is very small in size and was designed with practicality in mind. Obstacles are removed by the base, which is a column instead of legs, and an amazing touch is added by the ceramic top, which comes in Ash Grey, Brown, and White. This innovative circular configuration for the Santiago table expands from 135 cm to 181 cm in diameter with covertly hidden expansion leaves. Santiago is the epitome of understated elegance.

MEET THE designer

Alice Molloy Interiors has been behind some stunning projects in the county. We chat to the founder

Alice Molloy is an experienced interior designer who has worked on a series of ambitious residential projects in the UK and overseas since 2013. After securing a BA Hons in Interior and Architecture at the University of Hertfordshire, her passion became her profession when she embarked on a successful career as an interior designer.

Alice prides herself on an extensive knowledge of interior design, architecture and joinery, taking a detailed and caring approach to every brief. With an amazing eye for detail and innovative creative flair, Alice combines professionalism with a personal touch, getting to know clients deeply to create spectacular spaces they love. Alice truly believes in delivering a personalised service to every client she works with, intentionally keeping the business small to enable her to select each project carefully and give it the maximum attention, care and professionalism.

Absolutely spent some time with Alice in Halstead to find out a little more about her background and career so far.

Q Were you always destined for a career in interior design?

A I always wanted to be creative, but it initially started out as fashion design; when I was younger, I used to draw outfits on doll figures. It was like paper dolls / dress up wardrobe. It then went into architecture (rather a drastic jump) but

then into interiors. However in my studio architecture and interiors blend into one.

Q What do you remember about your first big project?

A That it was based in Northumberland. It was my stepping stone to launching Alice Molloy Interiors, and was a show home for a new development on a farm!

Q Which project during your career stands out for you the most and why?

A I would say the Bahamas Villa (technically done while I was with another company) but the logistics that went into that design, all the shipping from mainland America etc. It made me understand the project management of a project on a whole new level.

Q What makes you different?

A I tend not to follow trends or influence my personal style onto a project. Every client is unique, and so is every project! We take the time to understand you, and your needs, ensuring we create a space that’s both functional and visually pleasing.

Q What does the future hold in store?

A At the beginning of the year I moved into my new design studio and I am due to photograph some new completed projects for our new website. Along with some lovely new clients with full house renovations and some smaller room-by-room projects, the end of the year is looking busy.

QUARTET DESIGN

Four ideas to transform your Essex home's exterior

Is your Essex home feeling a bit tired and in need of a makeover? It’s not as difficult to breathe new life into your property as you might think, and these four fabulous ideas from leading South East home improvement company SEH BAC will help give your home the brand-new look it deserves.

BRING IN THE OUTDOORS WITH SLEEK ALUMINIUM BI-FOLD DOORS

Aluminium bi-fold doors will transform your living experience and add a touch of modern elegance to your home. They are the perfect way to blur the lines between your indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a seamless transition that'll make your home feel at one with the outside. With their slim sightlines and vast expanses of glass, aluminium bi-fold doors will flood your living area with natural light and provide breathtaking views of your garden, allowing you to enjoy each season from the comfort of your sofa.

ADD CHARM WITH HERITAGE WINDOWS

If you're after windows that combine timeless elegance with cutting-edge performance, look no further than elegant sash windows or traditional heritage windows. These gorgeous additions sit flush within the frame, creating a sleek, streamlined look that's sure to turn heads. They are the ultimate compromise between the beautiful aesthetics of traditional wooden flush sash windows and the modern qualities of uPVC, improving your home's energy efficiency. Whether your home is a period property or a modern masterpiece, heritage windows will complement its style perfectly.

MAKE A GRAND ENTRANCE WITH A NEW FRONT DOOR

They say first impressions count, and nothing makes a better first impression than a stunning new front door. Whether you prefer the durability of uPVC, the strength of aluminium, or the best-of-

both-worlds with a new composite door, there's a perfect front door waiting to welcome you home.

You can also choose from a variety of traditional and contemporary styles and an array of colours, including dual colour, so you can have a different colour on the exterior and interior of the door to match with your style inside and outside your home, creating an entrance that truly reflects your personality and enhances your home's character.

THE FINISHING TOUCHES: UPGRADE YOUR GUTTERING AND FASCIAS

While perhaps not as glamorous as bifold doors or a new front door, upgrading your guttering, fascias, and soffits can make a world of difference to your home's appearance and performance.

These often-overlooked elements play a crucial role in protecting your property from the elements and maintaining its structural integrity. Opting for low-maintenance uPVC options in a colour that complements your home's exterior will not only mean you'll improve its look, but also reduce future maintenance headaches.

MYKONOS
EXQUISITE FOOD ON BOARD

Imagine the dream luxury cruise. Think sumptuous accommodation, impeccable service, stylish bars and superb restaurants. Picture fabulous shows, live music and specially curated shore excursions to stunning and historic destinations. And it’s allinclusive. This is not a fantasy, it’s the incomparable experience awaiting onboard the Regent Seven Seas Grandeur. Grand by name and nature, the ship o ers the ultimate in indulgence and relaxation. We’re greeted with champagne and smiles in the dazzling reception area with its sweeping staircase and sparkling chandelier inspired by tennis bracelets. There’s even a stunning Faberge Egg on display. We head upstairs taking in the elegant decor and plush carpets underfoot to La Veranda, where bu et breakfasts and lunches are served. But this is no ordinary bu et, more like banqueting bu et-style with a luscious range of hot and cold dishes using every luxury ingredient imaginable. Like seafood, sushi, delectable grills and even caviar and Champagne.

When Cruise Director David, who soon becomes our cruise’s soundtrack and information source, announces staterooms are ready, we head with anticipation to our deluxe veranda suite. It’s a spacious haven of elegance, with plush furnishings, luxurious linens and a large private balcony. There’s a vast walk-in wardrobe and impressive marble and stone bathroom complete with double vanities, a large shower and a bathtub. Grandeur carries a maximum of 746 guests and was launched in 2023. She’s gleaming and modern and home to three lounges with bars, seven places to eat, including three speciality restaurants, a magnificent theatre, elegant library packed with reading material, a co ee shop, a sports deck, a spa and the pool deck with its own bar. So many beautiful spaces to enjoy. The ship never seems that busy, we don’t have to queue or ever wait for anything, and we can always find a space poolside or at our favourite bar. When night falls, our experience is elevated to a di erent plane. The lounges tempt us with their exotic cocktails delivered with

flair by expert mixologists and live music, pre and post-dinner. There’s karaoke and dancing and the fabulous theatre stages tribute shows, comedians and musicals. But dinner is undoubtedly the main event. The spectacular main dining room Compass Rose is designed like a glittering enchanted forest and serves a range of classic gourmet dishes. The speciality restaurants include Chartreuse for French cuisine, Prime 7 Steakhouse for premium beef and seafood, and Pacific Rim for a taste of Asia. La Veranda transforms into Sette Mari at night, with its

delectable Italian menu. Exquisite food to cater to every palate is at our fingertips. All the time. We revel in every pleasurable second spent on Grandeur, but the days ashore are also gorgeous. And a selection of carefully curated shore excursions are included in the price. We start in Athens and our journey takes us through Greece (including magical Mykonos, charming Corfu and sensational Santorini), Croatia, Montenegro and Turkey, finishing in Istanbul. We explore beautiful towns, enjoy chilled beach time, swim in the clearest of balmy blue sea, shop for mementos, discover historic sites, and sample the local food. It’s a hedonistic adventure through some of the most beautiful and historic places on earth. From that first sip of Champagne to the last dazzling sunset viewed from our balcony, life on Grandeur takes our breath away. It’s the stu that dreams are made of.

Education FOR ALL

Essex local and Paralympian Anne Wafula Strike has inspired countless others to follow their dreams –but now she is heading up a new challenge

Paralympic wheelchair racer and disability rights campaigner Anne Wafula Strike MBE is spearheading CBM UK’s ‘Every Girl, Everywhere’ campaign to make it possible for all girls with disabilities to go to school. Anne herself contracted polio aged two in Kenya, and became paralysed from the chest down. She and her family su ered from severe discrimination and she has first-hand experience of barriers that girls with disabilities face at school. Here the Essex local explains the importance of the campaign, as well as giving Absolutely an insight into her own schooling.

Q How do you look back on your own schooldays?

A I loved being in primary school. Secondary was challenging due to the access issues, it was hard to get to classes on time. I relied on my friends for support even for the basics like getting water to shower, also to carry

my books and files from the dormitory where I slept in order to get to class.

Q Why were you keen to support the ‘Every Girl, Everywhere’ campaign?

A I was keen because I know the challenges that girls with disabilities face, especially in some of the countries that CBM is working in. Many families would choose to educate boys and allocate a small portion of resources to girls. I know that these girls who are missing out on education are so talented, it’s a shame that they’re not in an environment where their talents can be nurtured.

Q CBM UK revealed that 33 million children with disabilities in low and middle income countries are missing out on school today –that’s a staggering number…

A Yes, and most of these children are girls. Sometimes the barrier is simply needing a pair of glasses, which a family can’t a ord. Sometimes the barriers are in the school building – schoolrooms which don’t have a ramp for a wheelchair, or

school toilets which don’t have handrails. Sometimes schools just don’t have the right support in place, like sign language translation for a student who is deaf.

Q What kind of things does the campaign look to o er these children?

A CBM’s ‘Every Girl, Everywhere’ campaign hopes to raise £50,000 for inclusive education in some of the world’s poorest communities. They want to make schools and classrooms accessible for all girls with disabilities.

The money will also train teachers and purchase mobility aids like crutches.

Q Have any particular case studies really plucked at your heart strings?

A I was very touched by the story of Ropafadzo. She lives in a village in Zimbabwe. She lost her leg in an accident when she was very young. For a girl with a disability living in poverty this could have been the end of her opportunities because girls with disabilities face so many barriers to going to school, from small things like not having an accessible toilet through to discrimination from their communities or even their families. Wonderfully she is now at a school which welcomes children with disabilities

where she can learn and play. She says: “I can do anything theothers can do.” She walks 3 kilometres to school on her crutches and one of her favourite things to do is to play wheelchair tennis. The school is part of CBM’s Every Girl, Everywhere inclusive education work.

Q Did you enjoy the Olympics and the Paralympics starting later this month [at the time of interview]?

A The Olympics were good to watch, but I always look forward to the Paralympics. I love seeing how the movement is growing, the new talent coming through. The Paralympics is where people go and become heroes. Every Paralympian that gets on the start line is a hero.

Q How long have you been based in Essex for and what do you love best about the county?

A I’ve been here since the end of 2000. This county is multi-cultural with so much talent. Essex is beautiful place.

Q The ‘Every Girl, Everywhere’ campaign aside, what else do you have on the horizon?

A I’m very pleased to announce a new edition of my memoir IN MY DREAMS I DANCE, first published in 2010 and now fully updated.

IN THE HEIGHTS

Frensham Heights is a distinctive day and boarding school, priding itself on being refreshingly di erent since 1925.

Nestled on 125 acres in the beautiful Surrey Hills, Frensham Heights o ers a co-educational day and boarding experience. An ISI inspection in 2022 rated the school as ‘Excellent’ in students’ academic progress and personal development. They achieve exceptional academic standards as part of a much richer experience, through a broad curriculum and the equality given to all subjects. Stunning A-level results this year in subjects across the board reflect this commitment to an educational approach that fosters curiosity and a love of learning. With a more informal setting and smaller classes, the teachers and students really get to know each other. Teachers don’t have to spend time telling students to check their ties or pull up their socks. Instead, they have conversations

and build relationships based on genuine, mutual respect and interest. Relationships that spark learning. Academically, Frensham is one of the most successful progressive schools in the UK. This year’s A-level results, an amazing 48% A*-A, 75% A*-B and 90% A*-C, are a testament to the students’ incredible resilience, hard work and passion.

Alongside the rich curriculum run endless opportunities for wider experiences outside the classroom, from specialist days, which take students o timetable to fully immerse in a subject, to longer term projects like the agro-ecological kitchen garden and the Year 8 self-governing village. The extracurricular o ering is immense with clubs running at lunchtime and after school.

“It’s a school that really broadens horizons by allowing each child to be themself, to thrive outside a box. For those who would naturally be happy in a conventional box, it

encourages them to try things they might not have considered or had the courage to try before,” says one Frensham parent. Boarding options are full, weekly, flexi 3 day and occasional. All three boarding houses are co-educational – boys and girls have separate dormitories with shared social areas. Evening activities range from swimming to cooking plus bowling and cinema trips. There is a London bus for weekly boarders and for full boarders, weekends follow the flow and pattern that is family life with big outings on Saturdays and lazy days on Sundays.

JUST THE BEGINNING

James Hunt, co-founder of Durden & Hunt,on how to prepare for a new year - and a search for a new home

It seems every year we think ‘it can’t be almost Christmas’ and ‘summer can’t possibly be over’, but with children back at school and Christmas treats starting to fill the shelves it’s hard to avoid the truth: Christmas is coming.

Although the festive season does announce the end of the year, it also leads to a fresh start with New Year’s Eve celebrations and the start of 2025. If new beginnings and a new home are on your wish list, it’s important to consider timings as from valuation to completion there are a number of steps that are followed, and can take time, with most property sales, such as local searches and enquiries.

One way to ensure your sale begins as e ciently as possible is to get an accurate valuation of your home. It almost goes without saying that this can a ect the entire selling journey of your property; pricing too high could put potential buyers o , whilst pricing too low will not achieve the true value of your home.

Our expert agents use their own experience and knowledge of the local market, along with a number of physical components, to determine the value of a property. These include location, layout,

size, condition and unique features. For example location; this determines the local amenities, schools, opportunities, and transport links the property could provide. Or size; two properties on the same street might di er significantly in square footage and as such will likely present a di erent value.

Of course it’s not an exact science, but if you’d like to discover the potential of your home, to plan for the year ahead, speak to myself and the team for a free, no obligation valuation.

Brogan Garrit-Smith

The Essex-born podcast host and philanthropist who is trying to ‘Get There’

Brogan Garrit-Smith’s podcast ‘Getting There’ launched in November 2023 and has gone on to become one of the fastestgrowing podcasts in the UK according to Spotify charts. Notable guests from Essex have included Tommy Mallet, James Argent, Debbie Bright and Kesley Parker.

Recently, she secured the last interview with Tommy Robinson before his arrest for Getting There. By no means is Brogan a supporter of Tommy Robinson and she discusses this with him and addresses to viewers that while he is a guest her beliefs are not in association with his – she consequently has been praised online for her interview. In less than 48 hours, the episode has 81,000 views on YouTube, and 500,000 impressions on X and is continuing to grow.

As well as the podcast, Brogan is a businesswoman, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and mother. A powerful force in the corporate world she has raised almost £1,000,000 for The Wickers Charity to reduce gang and knife-related crime.

Ever since Brogan was young she’s had an innate curiosity for life and a deep feeling that time was running out and she needed to chase the idea of arriving at a ‘destination’. In this illusion, she believed that once she arrived, everything would be OK, and that she would be happy.

During one mission, she visited Haiti, shortly after the 2010 earthquakes. She worked tirelessly in the communities, witnessing people dying on the streets with no sanitation and sleeping in orphanages.

During these years Brogan started to think about how she could live her life with intent. She had learned a lot about herself and she could hold people when they were most vulnerable, and help them feel seen and heard and validated. She learned that she wasn’t the only person on a journey. We’re all trying to get somewhere and whether that’s fuelled by job title or simply good health that looks di erent to each of us. She also realised we never really get there. Feelings, emotions, and pain: that’s life.

As such, Brogan created a space where people from all walks of life can feel seen and heard and started the ‘Getting There’ podcast as a result.
