e've gone overboard with summer excitement in this issue. Along with much talk of summer fashion (for us, it's either floral or folky and we're hugely keen on anything Mexican-inspired) we have a big focus on things to do outdoors in the coming months. There's an extensive overview of London's many imminent festivals, ranging from music to comedy to food in all areas of our urban sprawl. And on the subject of food: we were beside ourselves with excitement this month at meeting Jamie Oliver – and not only meeting him, but having an actual cooking lesson with him. His new cookery school at Westfield is offering classes in a huge variety of kitchen skills, and while they won't all be taught by the
7 CHIS_July16_EDS_LETTER 2.indd 7
man himself, his large team is set to supply west London with a host of new talents. Jamie was very likeable, we discovered, and his huge personality attracts lots of fans. Not far from Westfield, the Bush Theatre is set to move into its new home next year, but until then it takes residence in a variety of different local venues, as Patrick Driver discovers in looking over its illustrious past. Read all about that, along with the usual mix of local people, places, events and inspirations, in these pages. ◆

roof and unsafe lighting grid condemned the venue’s future. So in 2010 it was time to move, again converting a community space, this time the old library around the corner. As well as fixing problems and giving the theatre a street-level presence, capacity increased to 144. Without destroying the auditorium’s much-loved intimacy, that capacity will grow by a further 20% as the £4M second phase of the old library’s redevelopment takes place from now until early 2017. But this is far from the full extent of improvements. The space will continue to reflect, embody and direct its users’ projects. They are making the most of the hiatus, too. Boys Will Be Boys explores gender in the world of finance using cabaret, exploiting table seating in Bush Hall, used as a dancehall throughout the 20s. Content and context are also linked in The Royale, told in six rounds and set in a boxing ring; it will be in The Tabernacle, which has hosted boxing since the 90s. The Bush Theatre has a bright future, but the journey there will be just as sunny. With ‘perspective and plurality / culminating in the grand lesson of theatre’, all we can do is go along and ask: what is it?.

he identity of The Bush is bound up in its playhouse, and dependent upon breaking free from its confines. The next year will see it building on both aspects. It took over the upstairs of a pub, allowing room for just 82 seats, in 1972. But its position and intimacy proved valuable in shaping the theatre. It has produced hundreds of groundbreaking premieres including early
work by Stephen Poliakoff and Connor McPherson, building a reputation as a seedbed for new talent. The Bush focuses on finding and nurturing new voices telling contemporary stories and championing provocative, entertaining work. A poem commissioned by the theatre tells us, ‘it was never meant to last / it was never supposed to work’. And while its creative output succeeded beyond expectation, the ‘makeshift and ordinary’ performance space developed problems. Funding cuts loomed when the leaking

ike strawberries and cream, summer and festivals come hand in hand. But, while many of us long for hazy weekend parties, others can’t think of anything worse. With no electricity, little signal and (thank you, British summer) a lot of mud and rain, festivals can be more than a tad unbearable. Thankfully, for die-hard city kids, the number of festivals inside London is high. So high, in fact, that you really don’t need to leave home to get your fix. To prove our point, here’s a roundup of this year’s best...
BARCLAYCARD BRITISH SUMMER TIME
1~10 July Hyd e Park Please try and find a line-up better than this because we’re pretty sure no other festival in London has got it so sweet. Taking place over two weeks, headliners include Stevie Wonder, Florence and the Machine and Carole King. The real gems,

however, are hidden in the small print: Pharrell Williams, Corrine Bailey Rae and Mystery Jets will all be taking to the stage. Inside the gates you’ll also find fairground rides, gourmet street food vans and live comedy acts. Nominated for five festival awards last year (including the coveted award for best toilets), you’re guaranteed a proper festival experience with your bed just a tube ride away. An annual must. ◆ West Carriage Drive, W2; bst-hydepark.com
WIRELESS
8~10 July Fin sbury Park Now in its 11th year, Wireless is well established and in spite of the fact that it’s moved from central London to the north, acts remain A-lister: Calvin Harris, Craig David and The 1975 will all be performing. It’s this line-up of big names that makes Wireless the festival for anyone who loves chart music but can’t face a grimy weekend away. Alongside the more mainstream acts, organisers have got plenty

of up-and-coming talent on the bill and although none will be truly alternative, they do give this event a bit of depth. While the pop, dance and urban festival will give you the opportunity to tick off many a chart favourite, it is, more than anything else, a party for people who know how to let loose. ◆ Endymion Road, N4; wirelessfestival.co.uk

It’s this clever mashup of the known and unknown that makes this weekend exciting. Indeed, while the famous chefs will be spilling their secrets on the Interview Stage, others will be teaching you how cook just like them in the Summer Theatre Kitchen. aste buds will be running wild this summer, as Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre ramps up its food and drink offering with two new restaurant openings. Popular sandwich chain, EAT, will open its doors by the Broadway entrance on 8th June, offering an abundance of delicious salads, soups, sandwiches and its specialty hot pots, as well as a wide selection of teas, coffees and cold drinks to quench shoppers’ thirst. Modern Japanese favourite, Wasabi, will be arriving just a few weeks later on 24th June and will be located next to the
High Street entrance. Visitors will be able to enjoy an array of fresh, authentic oriental dishes to either eat in or grab and go, from sushi and Teriyaki chicken to Katsu curry and Miso soup. Wasabi joins the eclectic offering of the Centre’s Colonnade alongside Limeyard and Turtle Bay, both of which opened in 2014 and were quickly established as shoppers’ top restaurant picks. Not only that, Ealing Broadway’s much loved Food Stop W5 market is back and here to stay for the rest of the summer. Local street food operator, Eat Me Drink Me, will be rolling in the food trucks to whet hungry shoppers’ appetites every Friday and Saturday from 10am*, with tasty treats from local food cart regulars

including Margo & Rita, Smokin’ Buns and plenty more. For shoppers who are after an awardwinning handmade cake, Yvon’s Patisserie on Oak Road serves up beautifully crafted sweet treats alongside rich coffee and a selection of tea. Additionally, Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre’s Costa Coffee has also been refurbished as part of the Centre’s ongoing commitment to enhancing shoppers’ dining experience and is already open to the public. Andrew Rollings, Centre Director at Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre, said “EAT and Wasabi are fantastic additions to the Colonnade at Ealing Broadway and the openings are an ideal way to kick off our summer of food and fun at the Centre. “It’s great to see the return of Food Stop W5, back by popular demand after going down a storm last year. The market celebrates everything Ealing has to offer, and gives our local food producers the chance to come together and share their fantastic food creations with our shoppers.”

ith the summer season upon us, my hair is in need of a boost after being dulled over the winter months. For this, I head to Q Cut - a vibrant boutique hairdressers in the heart of flower-filled Kew. The salon is currently run by renowned session stylist Syd Hayes, who has worked on photoshoots and fashion shows all over the world, yet is still very much involved here with the team. I am firstly seated with stylist Paris, and we discuss what I am after, taking into account my daily routine, my natural hair colour and my skin tone. She knows exactly what to go for, and as she carefully begins applying foils to my hair, we get into conversation about holiday plans. After a short while under the heat, my hair is rinsed out and I another of the salon’s talented stylists, Alicia begins my blow-dry. She is able to give my hair volume which will hold for days after, and is filled with useful tips on taming my thick mane. The whole is experience is both relaxing and enjoyable, and I leave with blonder, bouncier tresses, ready for the sun. ◆ ●Q CUT SALON 295 Sandycombe Road, Kew TW9 020 8948 8609 qcutsalon.com

‘I WILL NEVER BUY SHOES ANYWHERE ELSE AGAIN’ Recruitment manager Andrea Mahn had so much foot pain she could barely walk.
T
his fit and active 40 year old had been suffering from Plantar Fasciitis – a painful inflammation of the tissue on the sole of the foot. “I was treated by an osteopath, a physiotherapist and a sports therapist but nothing really eased the pain,” explained Andrea. As her job involves a lot of standing and walking, life was becoming unbearable. She was also unable to partake in her favourite hobby, running. Then Andrea saw an advert for Foot Solutions and decided to pay them a visit.
“I turned up hoping that someone would be able to help me,” she said, “and it was the best decision I have ever made. “The staff were knowledgeable, helpful and attentive and after half an hour of tests and examinations they found a solution. It was the most fantastic service I could have imagined.” Foot Solutions provided Andrea with custom shoe inserts and a special device to help stretch her feet at night. “The device gave me immediate relief from the pain, allowing me to sleep better and when the inserts were fitted in my shoes they made a huge difference. I had faced the prospect of never being able to wear high heels – but I can now wear them for up to 14 hours if necessary. “I don’t suffer at all anymore. I can do my job and go running without constant pain. I will never buy shoes anywhere else again.” ◆

KILLER HEELS?
High heels look great, but prolonged wearing can lead to serious conditions like bunions and even arthritis. Foot Solutions custom arch supports minimise and even remove the pain resulting from such conditions and allow much greater mobility. We even have a stylish range of shoes (including heels), you can wear with the arch supports. At Foot Solutions, our trained consultants use high-tech foot scanning equipment and gait analysis to help find the perfect customised footwear and arch supports for your feet.

IN JUST A FOUR WEEK programme you CAN DROP TWO DRESS SIZES in time for your BEACH HOLIDAY
BEACH READY
Look your best this summer with a little help from West London Dermatology
A
s summer approaches our thoughts wander to the beach and we plan to fit back into our swimsuits. The thought of strict diets or hours in the gym seem daunting with so little time left. A new approach using laser technology can now offer Targeted Accelerated Fat reduction and is available at West London Dermatology Centre in Chiswick. Called the Xero technology, it uses low level lasers on the target area and within ten minutes the fat cells in the treated area are emptied and mobilised by the lymphatic system around the body typically to the muscle where they can
be burned off immediately. This usually results in immediate inch loss and fat reduction, for example one inch per session from the waist. Sounds too good to be true? Well, the team at West London Dermatology have a special offer whereby you get your first treatment free of charge so you can see the results before you commit to an additional seven sessions over the following three weeks. Whilst much more affordable that surgery it has the added benefit of no pain or downtime and you are encouraged to use these immediate results to improve your lifestyle by increases activity or exercise and improving nutrition. Exercise on its own is a very inefficient method of losing weight or burning fat.
39 Chis_July2016_SlimGym.indd 39
Half an hour in the gym is the equivalent calorie burn as eating one biscuit. With Xero treatment you can accelerate this process dramatically and as important you can choose where to remove the fat, shifting stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. The Xero system also uses Radiofrequency to tighten the skin once the fat has been removed. This helps to reshape and tone the area. Unlike other methods that destroy fat cells such as liposuction surgery or freezing fat cells the Xero simply shrinks the fat cells so is much safer and without side effects or discomfort. West London Dermatology also have an on site private gym area that you can use post treatment to maximise the benefit of your treatment. In addition you have access to their nutritionist if you require any review or modification in diet. This holisitic approach of technology, nutrition and exercise not only gives remarkable immediate results it promotes long term maintenance of a healthy lifestyle. In just a four week programme you can drop two dress sizes in time for your beach holiday. ď ľ To learn more about this programme West London Dermatology offer a free consultation and, as mentioned, Absolutely readers can receive their first session free of charge if appropriate. dermclinic.co.uk

In fact, with 27 acres of green space, swimming pools, tennis courts and the allimportant kids club and MediSpa, it’s a fabulous way to entertain the family for a day out! With such a variety of things to do, you can choose whether you want to spend time playing with the family or simply relaxing by yourself; either way the kids will be kept happy the club’s sports coaches are second to none. Set in such an expanse of private, landscaped grounds you wouldn’t know you’re in London, the Park Club aims to deliver space, exercise, activity and fun for all the family. For families, there’s lazy days relaxing by their 25 metre outdoor pool, or not so lazy if pool zorbing is scheduled! Combined with kids sports camps and activities in all the holidays to keep the

kids active, mums and dads can enjoy a world class gym, 17 tennis courts and over 100 studio classes per week whilst their children are coached on one of their numerous sports pitches, or simply entertained in their fabulous crèche. Day members will even be offered a complimentary personal training session in their gym – subject to availability. Adults also get the chance to retreat to the luxurious MediSpa and indulge in any number of sublime treatments on offer, followed perhaps by an alfresco lunch on their terrace where you can choose a freshly prepared delicious meal off their wellness menu. There’s also the family café where children are offered a fantastic healthy express menu freshly prepared by their chefs every day. In addition to the Club’s monthly and annual memberships, Day Visits are a new and great way to try the club out if you are thinking of joining The Park Club and want to give it a trial run, or a great way to visit on an occasional basis if you are only in West London now and again. Treat yourself or make a fantastic gift to someone you know in the area. To tailor your day please call 020 8740 4599.

Oliver’s ARMY
Jamie Oliver has opened a new cookery school in Westfield. Absolutely has a lesson with him Interview Pendle Harte
J
amie Oliver’s team is visibly nervous. He is on his way, but not here yet, and there are lots of people waiting for him. This is the launch of his new cookery school in a dedicated space attached to Jamie’s Italian in Westfield. Jamie himself is coming to give a cookery demonstration and we, his class, have been given clear instructions on where to sit and what to do. You can’t help but like him when he arrives; even if watching Jamie Oliver cook is a bit like watching a Jamie Oliver impersonator cook. His trademark style is so consistent and so particular that it almost seems to be a pastiche. ‘Chilli – it’s such a beautiful thing,’ he says. ‘We’re going to smash it. We’re going to bash it. Give the lemongrass a spank.’ He is making a Thai curry
and rhapsodizing about the pestle and mortar – ‘the most important piece of equipment in the kitchen’ – almost as if it were an entirely new invention that nobody had ever heard of. This is typical Oliver. His boundless enthusiasm creates the impression that he’s the only one to have ever thought of doing something, like making dinner. His target audience, whom he is seeking to ‘empower’ by transforming them from ‘non-cooks’ to functioning dinner makers, seems to me to be a questionable demographic. Because surely, in 21st century west London, everybody has dinner at home sometimes? And makes it in their kitchens, using things they have bought from an ample supply of local outlets. What Oliver gushingly refers to as ‘absolutely incredible fresh ingredients’ are undeniably lovely but as herbs and spices, wholly credible. All the

hyperbole is a bit wearing, but still, the message is simple. Come to the cookery school and learn to improve your skills. ‘All you need,’ says Oliver, ‘are 10 recipes that can save your life. The mother ship recipes that you can return to again and again. After that it’s super happy days all the way.’ The message is that anyone can cook, which may seem obvious, but Oliver’s belief is that some people are too scared, or that cooking is too alien, and that his role is to demystify the whole process. And this has always been his way – it’s now 20 years since he first burst onto our screens as The Naked Chef. And for a jobbing chef to be catapulted to stardom so quickly was huge, he reminisces. ‘Being the Naked Chef was like being in One Direction,’ he says. He credits himself with revolutionising the British kitchen and encouraging men to cook where previously they had simply arrived home and asked their wives what was on offer for dinner. Whether this is true or not, it’s undeniable that Oliver has made a huge impression on the nation and its eating habits. The cookery school will offer classes like ‘Pizza and Prosecco’ and
‘Vietnamese Street Food’ which are clearly attempting to tap into the foodie zeitgeist – a bright move that is likely to draw in any who feel intimidated by the thought of gourmet home cooking. Which brings us to Thai curry. The green Thai curry – first tasted by Oliver on his 15th birthday, when it ‘blew his mind’ is a dish, he says, that’s ripe for ‘bastardisation,’ by which he means that it has been adopted by the British canon and is now one of our favourite dishes. His version, which we make under his instruction (recipe left) is faultless. And there’s the success of the school – I bring my creation home for dinner and am enormously proud. Thank you Jamie. The Jamie Oliver Cookery School is staffed by six trained chefs and features TV screens to make following the recipe even easier, state-ofthe-art induction hobs and USB phone chargers in customer lockers. Classes include fresh pasta making, Thai curry, knife skills and more. jamieolivecookeryschool.com
M e th o D 1 To make the paste, trim and chop the spring onions, deseed and finely chop the chillies, peel and finely chop the garlic and ginger, tear up the lime leaves, squash the lemongrass, remove the outer layer and finely chop. 3 Put it all in a pestle and mortar or food processor with the coriander seeds, soy and fish sauces, fresh herbs, 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of sea salt and black pepper. Mash or whizz to a smooth paste. Grate in the zest from the limes to taste. 3 Slice the chicken into 2cm pieces and marinate in a little of the green curry paste for 30 minutes. 4 Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a pan or wok and add the chicken pieces. Fry for 4 minutes, then add the remainder of the curry paste. 5 Stir in the coconut milk, bring to the boil and simmer gently for 8 minutes. Season to taste with sea salt and black pepper. 6 Serve with rice and top with chopped pistachios.

and crostini of fennel salami, lifted by subtly truffled ricotta. Crispy peppered squid, however, suffered from thick batter, absent coriander and lack of seasoning, developing a theme that started with the aperitifs and extended to the mains: the bolder flavours often need bolder deployment. Pan-fried gnocchi with kale pesto and peas were tasty if a little soft and wet, but the promised asparagus was token, the tarragon undetectable. In the happy case of the chicken, ham hock, leek and tarragon pie – meaty, salty, with a flakystretchy crust – the more emphatic use of the herb was undoubtedly welcome. Service was pitched ideally, however, the waiter happy to provide sound advice on which wines might best accompany dishes. Orange cheesecake, lightly baked with judicious clag, was perfumed, and freshened by grapefruit. Bitter chocolate tart was a shade cakier than expected, but rich and attractively composed, with a slick of mousse, a slab of chocolate and rice krispies, pistachios, crumbs and crème fraîche. No197 thinks it’s a bar with food. But what bar serves breakfast from an open kitchen? It’s a bar and restaurant in a perfect environment for coexistence. Both creatures are handsome already, but sharpening their teeth will improve them.

his address has been transformed into a designconscious space that sees itself first as a drinking spot, but one with a full menu of great food. Many of the varied tables are communal, some elevated, but there are plenty of two-person tables, booths and more relaxed seating. The conscious mismatch of furniture is undeniably harmonious, and complements the split personalities of the bars: a central oval and a rounded L-shape towards the back. But the second of these isn’t a bar at all – it’s the auditorium for the very open kitchen.
When the lights are low, high ceilings and pale floors maintain the airiness of the restrained-industrial surroundings, providing a setting as apt for a meal as a cocktail, and the menus for both change seasonally. Passionfruit caipirinha was fruity and refreshing but lacked sweetand-sour zing, while the fruit was equally welcome in the pineapple and sage mojito but the more interesting element was similarly muted. A list of small plates accompanies the well-calculated selection of beers and inventive cocktails. Highlights include savoury pig cheek and black pudding croquettes, faultless sticky beef soft tacos,

n stepping inside our luxury villa it is impossible not to let a sense of serenity and peace wash over me. As it turns out, this is exactly what The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain is all about. Located a mere 11 km from the airport, the hotel consists of a 245-room resort located on 20 acres of private beachfront encircling a beautiful lagoon of deepest blue. Of the nearly 250 rooms on offer, 31 are suites and 42 are Club Level rooms but the real jewels in The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain’s crown are the 23 stunning seafront villas. These each boast three bedrooms, a private pool, beach access and a 24-hour butler service ready to cater to your every whim. The interiors are inspired by ‘60s architecture, with vibrant colours, wood panelling and exposed beams. There is also a generous dollop of South American and Mediterranean influence which melds together to create a uniquely engaging environment. Although inspired by ‘60s cool, there is nothing old fashioned about the facilities; the entire villa is kitted out
with state-of-the art amenities designed to make a guest’s stay as relaxing as possible. Their only drawback? You may never want to leave. After wandering around for a good fifteen minutes, fiddling with airconditioning settings and leaping onto one of the softest beds I have ever encountered, I finally turn my attention to the view. From some parts of the resort, guests can see the Arabian Gulf; from our villa we are treated to a fabulous, unrestricted view of picturesque Manama Bay. The most striking characteristic of the villas, however is their tranquillity. Nestled amidst the lush greenery of the gardens, they feel secluded without being isolated and offer the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of modern life. I am also struck by the blend of sophisticated elegance and laid-back, beachy vibes in the design. Access to the water is also key. The Kingdom of Bahrain boasts beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures attracting holidaymakers year-round. So, being able to dip into the crystal

waters of the lagoon at any time is a luxury that cannot be overstated and one that is valued highly by visitors to The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. When I am finally able to tear myself away from the villa, I start to explore the resort. Aside from the lovely decor and the many restaurants (which I will expand on later), I am drawn to The Ritz-Carlton Spa. A reason to stay all on its own, the spa is a haven offering relaxing treatments and signature products to leave guests refreshed and restored. I am particularly impressed by the thalassotherapy pool, a large, warm, mineral-rich pool with hydrotherapy jets to ease away aches and pains, allowing visitors to emerge revitalised and oh-sorelaxed. There is also the usual spa offering of massages and beauty treatments but all with that specific Ritz-Carlton finish that seems to add a sheen of luxury and of going the extra mile. For anyone wishing to exert a little energy, there is a fully stocked gym and also beachfront tennis courts and an air-conditioned indoor squash court. I am even able to indulge in a little retail therapy in the shopping arcade as I wander.
Having worked up an appetite, I have a serious decision to make; The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain has a veritable smorgasbord of restaurants and bars on offer and all sound irresistible. La Med lays on a fabulously lavish buffet, while The Gourmet Lounge specialises in Old World classics with decor inspired by La Belle Epoque - a truly regal dining experience. If you’re looking for something a little more exotic then Nirvana is for you; Executive Chef Mahipal Singh creates tantalising dishes complemented by the rich, sultry decor all set to the live music of the ‘Santoor’. to go for a really good steak. Lighter bites are available from La Plage, the resort’s poolside restaurant (perfect for a lazy lunch with plenty of wine) and from Thai Lounge. A quintessential afternoon tea can be had at The Lobby Lounge but my personal favourite is the Burlington Club where guests can stop for a cocktail and a fine Cuban cigar before or after dinner. Another aspect of the hotel that makes it a destination for travellers is the Club Level. This is designed to create the feeling of a ‘hotel within a hotel’, to extend an extra level of exclusivity, comfort and personalized service. It is located on two dedicated floors to ensure privacy and offers a separate lounge area with complimentary food and drink throughout the day. It is a wrench to leave at the end of my stay as weeks could be spent here without ever needing (or wanting) to venture out of the resort. The amenable staff, glorious design and excellent facilities without a doubt put The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain among the leading luxury hotels in the world.
¢ The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain The villa rate starts at GBP 2112 per night excluding taxes. The villa has three bedrooms and can accommodate up to 6 guests. ritz-carlton.com

he owners had seen this run-down, poorly constructed live-work unit and were struck by the potential to transform it into a five bedroom home. An intimate external courtyard provided a private outlook while allowing light to flood into the building. The challenge again was to create lateral spaces by extending and reconfiguring this two storey building. We designed the ground floor level with full height external and internal pocket doors to enable the living spaces either to be compartmentalised or opened out into the courtyard whenever required. We designed an extension for the kitchen and dining room that overlooked the back garden,

HOMES & INTERIORS / SPOTLIGHT and planted a rooftop terrace above it, to compensate for the garden space we had stolen. 1 Once inside the front door, the whole ground floor stretches out in front of you like an enormous loft apartment. Sarah Delaney worked on the interior design, and with a palette of white walls, limed wood and ebonised mid-century-style furniture she created a dynamic yet monochrome colour scheme.

2 We created a kitchen and dining area off the main living room, with a smart Bulthaup kitchen designed by Colin Astridge, and chairs by BB Italia around the dining table. A signature MB wood burning stove by Rais was installed – even though the property has underfloor heating throughout, these are amazingly economical and heat up the

space in no time. Three sets of sliding doors open out onto the garden. 3 One of three bathrooms, the master bathroom uses mirrors to maximise the light coming from the rooflight above. 4 The garden was completely relandscaped to create a green, peaceful space all year round. 5 Caption landing stairwell: As always, the need to introduce more light into the space was paramount, and the solution was to place a huge rooflight above the stairs and long rooflights above the first floor corridor with walk over glass panels on the ground floor ceiling to bring south light into this predominantly north facing building. The use of glass ‘balustrades’ for the staircase, with a mirror hung on the wall opposite, is another clever device to maximize the light effect.

The brand’s blend of old-school charm and modern spirit is as Brooklyn as a refurbed brownstone, capturing perfectly the idea of something familiar and traditional brought coolly up-to-date by a discerning eye for design. What’s more, the company ticks all the right ethical and ecological boxes – and the quality of the garments is top-notch. Prints are subtle, colours vivid yet soft, lines fluid. A very modern but simple take on classic kids apparel.

Instant message A parliamentary inquiry has been launched amid concerns of a ‘sexting epidemic’ in schools, reports Amanda Constance Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e
I
s your child sharing ‘dodgy pics’ or ‘nudies’? This is apparently what teenagers call the nude pictures or sexually explicit texts they send to each other – they leave it to the media to call it sexting. If they’re in their early teens, it’s quite likely that your children are involved. Schools report a sexting epidemic with thousands of children sharing sexual imagery online. Very few realize that they are acting illegally and could face police action if caught. “Sexting is extremely common and increasing,” said Helen Harris, deputy head at a north London school. “Girls do not appear to care that their images will be there for ever or that strangers will be viewing them. They think we are very old-fashioned and everyone does this and it’s no big deal.” But there are many who are worried. Following research into the issue, in April this year a parliamentary select committee launched the first ever inquiry into the scale of sexual violence and intimidation in schools. Committee chairwoman and Tory MP Maria Miller warned that action needed to be taken urgently. "It's clear from the young people we've heard from that sexual harassment and sexual violence in schools is having a profound impact on their day-to-day lives. We need to address this issue now, and stop it from blighting the lives of another generation.” Sonia Livingstone, professor of Social Psychology at the London School of Economics, said sexting had become a normal behaviour among young people. Sexual activities and conversations have become more constant in youngsters’ lives “because every young person now has a phone in their hands”, she said. She suggested that sex education should start at the age of five. “Give it a lot more time, give
EVERY Young person NOW HAS A phone in THEIR HANDS young people a lot more respect and start much earlier,” she said. There’s no one kind of sexting incident. In some cases it may be coercive and connected to bullying. In others it’s seen as ‘having a laugh’. Girls fear falling victim to ‘snaking,’ when a boy befriends them, leads them on and asks for a picture only to distribute it among his friends, and beyond. When one teenage girl’s picture was shared after she sent it to a boy with whom she was in a long-distance relationship, her mother asked her why she’d sent it. “I thought we were in love,” she said. “I didn’t think he would do anything like that.” Year 9, when teenagers are 13 and 14 seems to be ‘peak sexting’. Although, an investigation by The Times with 50 secondary schools found that more than a
73 Chis_July_16_EDUCATION JULY.indd 73
third of all sexting cases involved 12 and 13 year olds. Alarmingly, it also found that one in 10 cases involved a ‘non-school adult’. Very few children realize that their actions could put them on the sex offenders’ register. Sending and distributing indecent pictures of anyone under the age of 18 is illegal. Maria Miller, the former culture secretary who chairs the women and equalities select committee, has urged education secretary Nicky Morgan to make it compulsory for schools to report to the police any sexting by or to under-18s. “It shouldn’t be under schools’ discretion,” she said. “It is an illegal act.” But many are concerned that the panic over young people sexting is overblown and that children should be supported and educated rather than punished. Jules Hillier, chief executive of Brook’s chief executive, the UK’s largest sexual health charity, thinks the media is at fault. “It is reported as though it were prevalent, as though every young person was doing it. It’s sensationalised and over-reported. “We know of course that young people are using mobile devices the whole time. We know there’s a trend for sending pictures with sexual content, but the extent to which that’s happening is very difficult to fully understand. A recent reliable survey found that 12% of 11- to 16-year-olds have seen or received sexual messages online. That’s obviously quite a big minority, but it’s still very much the minority. “We need to be helping young people understand some of the risks – helping them to be clear about what the law is. Whilst they quite often know that the age of consent is 16, they are not then aware they are still considered a minor if it comes to sending photos of themselves and would be in trouble for that kind of behaviour.”

I absolutely love my job! Not many people can say that, but every day is different and I genuinely love the satisfaction of finding people their new home to rent. I am looking forwards to many more years in the lettings and estate agency industry. u
Brought up in West London, I decided it was time to tackle my home town and really get to know the property market. I feel privileged to work in this area and love what Chiswick has to offer from both a work and social perspective. u

NOTTING HILL FILM FLAT STARTS A NEW CHAPTER
t is easy to forget how successful the 1999 romantic comedy Notting Hill was. After its release fans would flock to see the bookshop on which Hugh Grant’s fictional outlet in the film was based, and an auction to sell the blue door featured in the film made newspaper headlines. The film cemented Grant’s reputation as a movie star and centred on his character’s on-off relationship between famous actress Anna (Julia Roberts) after she walks into his independent bookshop. Richard Curtis penned the story after visiting The Notting Hill Bookshop in Blenheim Crescent, just off Portobello Road. The apartment’s owner Sarah Anderson is moving out after living above the shop for 35 years – she sold the business in the 1990s before the film was made, but continued to run it for the new owners until 2005. It’s on the market for £1.495m. Marsh & Parsons 0207 313 2890 marshandparsons.co.uk

popular with the super wealthy. But if you want to rent rather than pay a hefty price to buy one, then a four bedroom, third-floor apartment is available to rent for £22,500 per week or £1.17 million a year. The property offers a gilded existence of panic rooms, bulletproof glass, post that’s x-rayed before being delivered and a tunnel through to the neighbouring five-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The apartment also has a swimming pool, sauna and steam room, private exercise suites, treatment rooms, gym and golf simulator. Tunstall Property 0203 011 1775 tunstallproperty.co.uk

PLEASE, SIR, CAN I HAVE THIS FLAT?
his loft apartment at Concordia Wharf between Bermondsey and London Bridge was once used as Fagin’s lair for his gang of juvenile pickpockets in the 1968 hit musical film Oliver! You might have to pick a pocket or two to afford this unique property as it’s on the market for £965,000. Converted in the 80s, it was originally used to store grain, tea and spices, and is considered one of the more authentic warehouse homes in the neighbourhood. The apartments were all sold as shells which means each one is unique and can be re-modelled again. On the fourth floor, with one reception room and one bathroom, it’s got exposed brick walls, beamed ceilings and plenty of light throughout. Nearly half the properties will be inside the central ‘doughnut’ building’s central courtyard. ctress Kate Winslet recently scooped the Best Supporting Actress BAFTA. But the Titanic star is almost as famous for getting into scrapes with neighbours. Most recently she moved with husband Ned Rocknroll from New York to live on the West Sussex coast. The couple bought a Grade II-listed house for £3.25m but fell out with Natural England who feared her plans for a barrier would damage the habitat. The actress experienced similar problems with her previous home in Treyford, where she was forced to withdraw an application to build a wooden gate. Winslet’s first forays came after making her name in Titanic back in 1998 when the then 22-year-old used £200,000 of her fortune to buy this three bedroom getaway in Angarrack. It’s now got a £400,000 price-tag. The Modern House 0203 795 5920 themodernhouse.com

hen you are letting a property for a client, a key asset is your local knowledge. I’ve lived in West London all my life and started my lettings career here 18 years ago. But nothing in the capital stays the same for long and the continuing transformation of the West London skyline certainly keeps me on my toes. Increasingly, areas like Ealing, Kew, Brentford and Richmond, on the fringes of central London, are where London’s professionals are choosing to live, opting for the ‘village’ feel, with wide avenues and parks, away from the noise and pollution of central London. New residential developments are the driving force behind this change in the way many of us are choosing to live, offering a sophisticated lifestyle that only a few years ago was the preserve of prime London apartment buildings. Unsurprisingly, we are seeing the highest rental demand in these smart property developments so Kew Bridge, a mixed-use scheme by UK developer St George, was the

obvious location for our latest lettings branch. Apartments at Kew Bridge combine a high specification interior and the on-site amenities of a prime London location. Luxurious finishes, 24 hour concierge, a gym and secure parking are all part of the package and every apartment has its own balcony too. These new builds are attracting professionals from many industries and corporate tenants from overseas are also relocating here. Typically, rents range from upwards of £325 per week for a one bedroom apartment and £450 + per week for a two bedroom property. I’ve worked for Benham and Reeves Lettings for 11 years and when I first joined the company, I couldn’t have imagined how this
part of leafy West London would evolve. I began working at our Kensington and Knightsbridge branches and I loved the charming period properties. When I became manager of our Ealing branch in 2012, I never expected to see so many equally luxurious properties in this corner of West London. In 2016, high end luxury is no longer the preserve of central London. That’s why we continue to focus our expansion in property schemes where rental demand in London is highest, opening lettings branches at Fulham Reach in Hammersmith as well as Marine Wharf in Surrey Quays and at London Dock in Wapping. But working in this industry is not just about property. It’s about people. I love to help tenants find their perfect home. My detailed knowledge of the area helps me provide a more personalised service. Rental demand at Kew Bridge goes from strength to strength and we often see families and individuals moving here on the recommendation of friends. I am lucky to live and work near the River Thames – and it’s great to see that other Londoners are now discovering its appeal too.

HOMES with HISTORY London developments with a story
A
s you travel around London it can feel like every street is being redeveloped from huge towers of gleaming glass to smaller, more boutique affairs. And you’d be right. The capital is the scene of a significant building boom at the moment as developers race to keep up with demand. Last year a significant amount of new bricks and mortar were squeezed into the city, with some 25,000 new homes built. But all is not as new as it seems. Underneath the builders’ dust, there is plenty of London’s history peeking out. You may think you’re buying a swish new pad, but it could be where Kings frolicked, power stations belched, Roman centurions bathed or TV programmes recorded. With at least 2,000 years of a turbulent, colourful and rich history below and around us, who knows? Here are some of the developments for sale at the moment where such history can be found.
OLD SMOKER, BATTERSEA
operations in 1983. It then stood empty and increasingly derelict until 2012 when a viable scheme to redevelop it was finally launched with Malaysian backing. The work continues today and parts of the residential complex are slowly being released for sale. The most recent includes The Power Station where prices start at £1.975 million for a two bedroom apartment, including several which will sit within the original fabric of the building and include exposed brickwork and industrial fittings. More information, 020 7501 0678 or batterseapowerstation.co.uk.
BOMBED OUT CHURCH, CLAPHAM JUNCTION
Four bedroom property: £2.55m rive up St John’s Hill from Clapham Junction and on the D right, you’ll see what used to be St Paul’s Church. But prayers and evensong are long gone. Built in the mid-1860s by the St John’s Hill developer Charles Wix, it was hit by a V1 flying bomb during WWII. This destroyed its interior and, despite a

refurbishment after the war, by the 1970s it was derelict and an attempt to turn it into a community centre floundered. In 2015 it was converted into four luxury homes, one of which is for sale at the moment via Portico on 020 7099 4000 or portico.com.
FORMER TV STUDIOS, HAMMERSMITH
Starting from £715,000 iverside studios in Hammersmith is one of London’s artistic hubs R famous for its TV studios where for many years Dr Who was filmed, as was Hancock’s Half Hour and children’s programme Play School. But after plans were drawn up to redevelop the site, a Dalek-like battle raged over the site’s future with Sir Peter Blake objecting to the plans and Bill Bailey supporting them. But in 2014, it was demolished and is being replaced with 165 one, two and three bedroom apartments. Some TV heritage is to remain, including three new TV studios on the site.
