Ambitious and proud, he gained patrons from all over Spain; from the royal and aristocratic to the intellectual and political. After a life threatening illness in his mid-40s, Goya used his skilled portraiture to communicate with others and – with a new

here couldn’t be a more fitting setting for the opera than the Palace’s Great Hall. William Shakespeare’s company performed for King James I over Christmas and New Year in 1603 and since then the grand space has hosted informal government meetings following in a noble tradition of royal and political entertainment. The hall’s tapestries were commissioned by Henry VIII and are a great feature Ω as does his fifth wife and Queen, Catherine Howard, who is now the Palace’s most infamous ghost. Not only is this a unique event celebrating one of England’s greatest palaces and its history, but it is also a great opportunity to celebrate with the local community by watching local choirs perform in one of the country’s most iconic historical spaces. u

Throughout its long history, the many courtyards and corridors of Hampton Court Palace have echoed with live music, including the legendary choral compositions of Thomas Tallis, sung in Henry VII’s Chapel Royal; music lessons given to King George II’s children by George Frideric Handel; and, more recently, Van Morrison’s set at the Hampton Court Palace Music Festival.

HARD TALKIN’ Tom Hardy is tested to the limit in muchanticipated Legend where he plays not one but both of the notorious Kray twins W o r d s c a m i l l a d av i e s

N

ot a man of half measures, Tom Hardy is already gathering Oscar nominee buzz for his duel part as identical twins Reginald and Ronald Kray in Legend, this autumn’s crime thriller directed by Brian Helgeland. Following in the tradition of Hardy’s other best work, Lawless, The Dark Knight Rises, and Mad Max: Fury Road, Legend delves deep into the psyche of the alpha male - or in this case, males. The film follows the gangster brothers Ronnie and Reggie Kray as they monopolise the underworld of organised crime in a turbulent 50s and 60s London. Perhaps the original EastEnders, the Kray brothers roamed the Whitechapel streets with their gang, The Firm, which

Chis_Nov1_TomHardy.indd 18

People shouldn’t CONFUSE ME with my CHARACTERS or who I was in THE PAST was infamously linked to murders, missing people, armed robberies, arson and countless more illegal activities. Yet while the identical twins inspired fear in most, they were also popular cult figures, mixing with politicians and entertainers including Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland; at once menacing and charming, by all accounts they were the most notorious nightclub owners around. Legend sees Hardy grapple with the task of portraying two identical but very

individual characters on screen, but his performance is complemented by more than just a generic film set. 1960s London is a star in its own right. Both Hardy and his real-life muses are London through and through: the actor still lives in the capital with his wife, Charlotte Riley who he first met on the set of Wuthering Heights. Hardy grew up in East Sheen and the actor’s high-paying roles have seen him buy property there too. While his work may take him far and wide - Mad Max: Fury Road required filming scenes in Australia and the Namibian desert, for instance - Hardy acknowledges that, just like the Krays, London is his ultimate stomping ground. He may have a place in Provence to which to whisk away his family, but the movie star still chooses London for an ultimate weekender, frequently saying “there’s so much to see

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE and do here.” Any paparazzo worth their salt would head to the Groucho Club in search of London’s elite, Hardy included, but he’s also partial to spending time at Soho House. Funnily enough, turn the clock back to the 60s and you’d likely find the Kray twins treading a similar beat – although that is where the similarities between Hardy and his on-screen alter egos end. His occasionally chequered past is nothing compared to that of the gangster twins. The actor has previously opened up about his cocaine addiction, calling himself “a shameful suburban statistic.” At just 11, young Hardy was introduced to sniffing glue, and by 13, the middle class schoolboy was familiar with the police. He was expelled from his Surrey boarding school for stealing, before sliding into an alcohol and substance abuse, subsequently getting arrested for joyriding in a Mercedes with a gun. It was after waking in a pool of blood and vomit on Old Compton Street 12 years ago that Hardy vowed to turn his life around for the better. Happily, after a stint in rehab, he’s been clean ever since. Studying method acting at Drama Centre London helped Hardy find his way onto the screen via TV dramas and he’s been on a steady career trajectory ever since. Since becoming a star in his 20s, the unabashed Hardy hasn’t gone to great lengths to hide his past - either criminal or cringeworthy. Footage from a modelling contest he entered and won for Channel 4’s The Big Breakfast aged 19 has circled the web, while photos from his teenage MySpace account – something most adults would be loathe to revisit – recently went viral too. Not that Hardy cares. “I’ve got no shame about my MySpace

YOU'VE GOT to be an ABSOLUTE NUTCASE TO pursue a career IN ACTING photos, especially the one of me in my underpants, which is a glorious photo of a man in his natural habitat,” Hardy told Sky News, referencing what he himself calls his ‘tighty-whitey budgie smugglers’. “In America, they say, ‘You should be ashamed of this,’ but I’m actually not remotely ashamed.” He’s an actor who seems to ooze confidence, and being self-assured has proven to be a huge advantage in the fraught game of Hollywood power plays. “I’m an addict,” he explains, “which means if you tell me I can’t do something I’ll do it. If I tell myself I want to do something, however hard or gruelling it might be, I’ll do it. Even if it terrifies

me. You’ve got to be an absolute f**king nutcase to pursue a career in acting. Either that or you need to really believe in what you’re doing. Everyone who said I’d never make it made me believe in myself even more. It made we want it badly.” The famously muscular actor is well aware of his reputation as Hollywood’s ‘bad boy done good’ - but it’s not exactly something he’s proud of. “I’m not really looking for those kinds of roles but obviously directors see that I’m capable of playing those characters,” Hardy admits. “For a while I played at being pretty rough and tough when I was younger but I’m not like that anymore. Fear and anger are still a part of who I am but I live very calmly. I’m a father, I’m married, it’s all pretty f**ing normal for me!” Outside of his work, Hardy is adamant the most important thing to him right now is his family. “Being a father to Louis has given me the kind of purpose that makes you think more carefully about how you live your life. I made a lot of mistakes and I put my mum and dad through a lot because they were so worried for me,” he remembers. “I take great pride in being a father and making sure I’m there for him and help him as he makes his way in the world.” His wife Charlotte also revealed that she is pregnant with the couple’s first child at the recent Legend premiere. With his perspective on life firmly in place, Hardy isn’t one to glamorise his hellraising days. “I ended up in a lot of trouble ... I made a lot of mistakes in my life. I’m very lucky to be alive” - but the now clean living actor could not pass up the chance to take on the decadent Krays. “This was the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced as an actor,” he says. “It’s normally hard to play one character, but having to play two characters in the same film and build the relationship between them is about as hard as anything you could imagine.” So while Hardy and the Kray brothers share a shed load of ambition, a love for London and the philosophy that family comes first, happily, that’s where the connection ends. Of his newfound Hollywood status, Hardy says: “I just go and do my job with whatever skills I have and not mess around. I take my work seriously and I’m very lucky to be an actor who is working regularly when so few actors even get to make a living doing this.” u

Legend, directed by Brian Helgeland, is on general release.

The former Mulberry Creative and Brand Directors, respectively, premiered their capsule collection of bags at an intimate breakfast presentation, with Hill introducing the industry’s elite to a new fashion philosophy: “I love to invite the audience into our imagination and let them share in the fun!” The brand’s name alone indicates Hill and Fendley’s significant role in dissolving fashion’s longstanding #youcantsitwithus reputation. Case in point: the emoji-like Wink and Smiley Face hardware. This playful spirit also extends to Hill and Friends’ six silhouette’d Happy range comprising glossy goat, calf and calf hair leather mini and large satchels in neon pink, leopard print, emerald green, black, toffee and oxblood hues. What could be better? Well, this: “From day one we wanted to make key styles available from the day of the presentation,” said Fendley. Ahead of the curve yet again. But, while Hill and Fendley have already made some pretty industry-revolutionising moves, will their cheeky, irreverent designs and ‘Fashion just got friendlier’ mantra bring them future success? They’ve got it in the bag. ◆ ● HILL AND FRIENDS From £495; netaporter.com

CLYM EVERNDEN

I have watched as this brilliant young illustrator - who cautiously drew guests at the speed of light throughout my wedding last year has grown into a fashion force. The man in question is Clym Evernden, a softly spoken soul who has the likes of Natalie Massenet and Charlotte Dellal personally request for him to illustrate their events. Not just reserved for the pages of Vanity Fair and Vogue, Clym turns his hand to private parties and personal portraits. ◆ ● clymdraws.com

MONSE MAISON

Bright tones, clever embroidery and wearable separates made up the Monse Maison debut in New York this season. Already gaining a celebrity following in the form of Sarah Jessica Parker and Amal Clooney, Oscar de la Renta design alums Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia have continued where they left off at Oscar, but with an obvious injection of youth and free spirit in their creations. ◆ ● monse.com

SANDRA MANSOUR

JEROME DREYFUSS

My love for Sandra Mansour was immediate following her debut collection; bold shapes and embroidered gowns that had a certain edge to them and positioned her perfectly to appeal to all ages. Sandra worked closely with Elie Saab for many years and it’s quietly evident in her own collections Mansour’s signature separates and beautifully embroidered dresses are designed for the women who isn’t afraid to express herself. ◆ ● sandramansour.com

Winter months are fast approaching, a time to switch the tones of my daily wardrobe from brights to neutrals and select a new bag for the new season. Jerome Dreyfuss is proving to be the name on everyone’s lips for the perfect winter bag, I’m coveting the chic shearling Eliot bag in rich green. ◆ ● net-a-porter.com

VILHELM PARFUMERIE

With the change of season and all things Swedish being close to my heart, I couldn’t not turn to Jan Vilhelm for a scent to take me through the winter. Rather than opt for his latest creation, Oud Indigo, a beautiful deep scent that works so perfectly at this time of year, I chose a lighter fragrance by the name of Smoke Show that I had fallen for while at the Vilhelm counter in Liberty - dark days, light scent, I say. ◆ ● liberty.co.uk

hough winter is pretty much here, sometimes a hefty winter coat can be a little too much for our temperate British climate. Enter the shirt jacket, more commonly known as ‘the shacket’. Effectively a shirt cut from thick, hard wearing fabrics such as boiled wool, gabardine, canvas or leather, shackets ruled the runways for Autumn Winter '15. At Prada, Miuccia’s boys wore theres buttoned up beneath mackintoshes. At Louis Vuitton, creative director Kim Jones cut his from cashmere and wool in neutral shades and teamed them with tonal outer layers. At Richard James the same jackets were cut from cotton canvas and worn with suit trousers. The effect is smart without being

dressy. These shackets can be worn over smart poplin shirts to the office; over chunky heavy knit jumpers at the weekend, or buttoned beneath heavier layers when the weather really comes in. Ultimately, though, the shacket is a neat expression of the current direction in menswear. Right now the general mood is one of understatement and casual comfort, it’s not about trussing up to the nines in a three piece suit, it’s about looking as sharp as possible with minimal fuss. Here are five of the best shirt jackets out there right now. u

nown as Chiswick’s only five star hairdressers, Jo Blu has a reputation to live up to. Since opening their doors in 2006, the salon has gone from strength to strength having attracted the custom of many celebrities – including supermodel and it-girl Suki Waterhouse and Olympian rower James Cracknell. Most recently, Jo and her salon have been nominated for the London Hair and Beauty awards. With the aim of creating a calm, enjoyable and relaxing environment the salon is not only designed to make clients feel at ease but is also made to be a lovely place to work. This is done using a neutral palate with small metallic touches. The result is luxuriously elegant.

Well-known &

RESPECTED for her SKILL Jo has worked and taught both cutting and colouring in world class salons over the past 20 years. Well-known and respected for her skill and technique, each member of Jo’s thriving team work by the same standards and are subsequently both confident and knowledgable. Tanya, the senior technician and stylist, cut my hair quickly and efficiently. Having been shown a picture of how I wanted my hair to be, I left with fresh bangs and a long silky mane. Thank you, Jo. ◆

your skin. It was when I started using the oil cleanser and thought, this is how skin should feel, that I started experimenting and researching, reading the back of packs and realising that a lot of oils were full of cheap ingredients. So I started mixing my own. Q: And how did that become a business? AP: Last year I was having lunch with my old boss Charlotte Semler, who founded Myla, and some of the old team and they were asking me (as people always do) for advice on their skin. I told them I used oil and that I made it myself and Charlotte, who’s a brilliant businesswoman, suggested that we do something with it. She works so fast that she really speeded me on – and from lunch to launch took less than a year. Q: Why Votary? AP: It means devoted, or advocate, so it has religious connotations – it ends in ‘ary’, which is my nickname, and we wanted something that would look and sound unisex because the oils are great for men too. We chose green apothecary glass and were lucky to find a great designer – and then lucky that Liberty loved it and wanted to stock the range. Q: What ingredients are used? AP: Lots! For the cleanser it’s rose, geranium and apricot oil, while the neroli and myrrh oil is based on grapeseed oil and contains hazelnut oil, which really gives a good glow and feels really luxurious. Jasmine and calendula is the lightest, while rose maroc and sandalwood is the thickest. u

Q: Why oils, Arabella? AP: For me, discovering an oil cleanser was a real revelation. It makes your skin feel soft and alive, not dry and tight. So I started thinking, why do we dry our skin out by cleansing and then put a layer of grease on it? It doesn’t make sense. Absolutely: But aren’t oils greasy? AP: No. It might go against your instincts to put oil on a spot, after we’ve been told for years to dry spots out, but in fact it’s exactly what you should do. I really don’t get spots any more since I’ve been using oils, because most skin problems derive from dehydration. Where people sometimes go wrong is with using too much oil with pipettes. You really only need three or four drops.

Oil IS REALLY the BEST WAY to bring life TO YOUR SKIN

Q: So how did this translate into making your own oils? AP: I’ve been making my own facial oils in a very kitchen table way for a while now. As a make-up artist, I often start by massaging oil into people’s faces and would see them instantly relax, partly also because of the smell, which is very important. Massaging in oil is really the best way to bring life back to your skin – and your make-up’s only ever as good as

CROSSFIT ADDICT

Why this new fitness programme is taking over B y A l e x a n d r a P I OT R OW

rossFit seems to have become a recent fitness chart-topper, but this workout has been around for a while. Strength and conditioning-focused, the CrossFit program is a fastpaced mix of high-intensity exercises. Inspired by military, professional athlete and police training, CrossFit is ideal for those who are bored of regular gym exercises and are looking for a new challenge. CrossFit training blends together various functional movements and exercises, such as burpees or deadlifts, which aim to improve cardiovascular fitness at the same time as building strength. Each training session is controlled, as you complete circuits of exercises to the best of your ability within the allocated time. This can range from you completing the Workout of the Day, a certain number of reps against the clock, or as many repetitions of a particular exercise as you can in a fixed time. CrossFit owes its success to alternating workouts regularly, during the session and throughout the week. Not only does this mean you are constantly stimulated and don’t get bored, but it also prevents your body from getting used to one routine. This ensures you achieve maximum results in a shorter time frame. The CrossFit trainer is very much present, supervising constantly to ensure participants are pushing themselves as hard as they can. The pack mentality of teaming up and working together also builds a competitive camaraderie, forcing you to push past your fitness limits. CrossFit does require commitment; but is no problem because the engaging workout only lasts 45 minutes to one hour. CrossFit, we’re coming for you. u

ABSOLUTELY / PROMOTION Food driven by taste and imagination Although the menu emphasises fresh, raw dishes, those seeking a hearty, meaty fix won’t be disappointed. Whether you pop in for a cold-pressed super green juice, sample an enticing and fragrant raw pad thai or opt for the warming beef and beetroot stew; the common theme is excitingly appetizing food that is crafted from quality ingredients and most importantly, tastes fantastic. “I’m happiest when I can combine my scientific expertise with my love of cooking to show people that healthy and nutritious food can be imaginative and delicious. We’re not about fad diets but about introducing people to a way of eating that’s easy to live with.”

A CAFÉ WITH A CRUCIAL DIFFERENCE

Nutritionist Ruth Wood explains her passion for nutritionally balanced 'no fads food' and why she's so excited about the new Crucial Cafe at The Hogarth Health Club. By T R E VO R B I S H O P

Right food, right place, right time Ravenous after the exertion of a challenging work out, or dehydrated by the demands of an intense yoga session, it can be tempting to derail all that hard work by grabbing something to eat or drink that isn’t actually what your body needs. Doesn’t it sometimes feels like the right food just isn’t in the right place at the right time? The launch of the Crucial Café at the Hogarth Health Club has changed this, making it easy to enjoy healthy, delicious foods before or after a workout. This is a café with a difference. Not headed by a restauranteur, this new eatery is the creation of qualified clinical nutritionist, Ruth Wood – founder of Crucial Food, a Chiswick based company with a reputation for transforming clients’ lives through out-of the-ordinary nutrition.

Power of nutrition Ruth understands the difficulties in sustaining healthy eating habits even with the best intentions. Her fourteen years of clinical experience in centres such as London’s Priory have made her passionate about the life-changing power of nutritionally balanced foods that support vitality and well-being. “Fresh, high quality ingredients are so powerful in helping our bodies to repair themselves, giving us more energy, brighter skin and an all round sense of well-being.” Ruth’s expertise has been used to craft a nutritionally balanced menu suitable for a range of dietary needs - from vegetarian to dairy-free, vegan to allergy free. She is a particular fan of raw food: “Heating food above 116F can destroy lots of important vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Making raw food in its purest form a part of your diet can have amazing health benefits.”

59 CHIS_Nov15_Parkclub.indd 59

A partnership in wellness Phil Pritchard, a friend of Ruth's and now Crucial's Managing Director, suggested they go into business together and the idea of retailing Crucial meals through the Hogarth was met with such enthusiasm from Hogarth Group M.D. Dan White that it quickly grew into the Crucial Café project, as part of the Hogarth’s recent complete revamp of its facilities. “I’ve always loved the way the Hogarth focuses on total well-being. They’ve revamped the club recently with state of the art new equipment and it’s fantastic to be able to support their forward thinking ethos from a nutritional standpoint. I’m so chuffed to be able to work in partnership with people who love food and love being healthy.” It’s not just the food that is proving to be a hit. The eclectic redesign of the cafe space by Crucial Creative Director, Penny Pritchard, incorporates the airy garden room and mellow lounge and has created quite a buzz The laid-back, stylish vibe encourages lingering, socializing – as well as taking time to check out regularly changing displays of art and photography. The cafe currently has a 3 month 'Punk' exhibition by legendary photographer and Hogarth member, Sheila Rock. Ruth sums up the menu: ‘tasty, different and nutritionally balanced.. delicious!’ Excitingly, the Crucial Café is not limited to Hogarth Health Club members – non-members are also welcome to visit the club and sample the healthy culinary treats on offer. Ruth sums it up: “Nutritionally balanced, great ingredients and really tasty. That’s what we should all be eating.” u

rimary school teacher Jane Dowrick wanted to look her best for her son’s wedding. Being a keen dancer she was looking forward to stepping out onto the dance floor. But she faced a problem. As Jane explains, “I can’t wear high heels for very long because I suffer from back and hip pain. To make matters worse I also have a bunion.” But she was determined to have a good time and decided to splash out on a new outfit for the day and a cocktail dress for the evening. However, she was still unsure what shoes she could wear for style and comfort. “I decided to visit Foot Solutions – and I’m so glad I did!” adds Jane. “I spent an hour with their staff undergoing tests and scans to monitor

These together with the special custom inserts supplied by Foot Solutions meant I was ready for the big day. ith the earthiness of chestnuts and the richness of pastry there’s no better a grape match than Chardonnay with this recipe, preferably one with a hint of oak (but not dominated by oak). henever the tang of orange is in a recipe, savoury or sweet, I always think a wine with a distinct orange flavour makes the best pairing. FOOD & DRINK / ROUND UP

SUNDAY BEST

With the weather cooling, there’s no better time to eat your body weight in meat; here are the best places to do it

here’s a real difference between a good roast and an outstanding T roast. These may be subtle, and noticing them considered pedantic, but for any gourmand, the under-seasoning of potatoes, or over cooking the beef is just not on. Well, you can visit the Smokehouse in Chiswick safe in the knowledge that off days just don’t happen in this kitchen. The second Smokehouse from renowned chef Neil Rankin (the first is in Islington), this restaurant does exactly what it says on the tin. While there are the classics Ω roast rare breed Highland beef for one, and even more sophisticated options like confit duck

pulled pork shoulder stole the show sauteed red cabbage, brocolli and carrots. If there’s one place you should eat a roast at this November, it’s The Smokehouse. u ● 12 Sutton Lane North, W4, 020 3819 6066; smokehouse.pub

HAWKSMOOR

awksmoor knows meat, well. In fact, if you want beef, you go to Hawksmoor. Likewise, if you want a good Sunday roast, head here. Centrally located on Air Street near Piccadilly Circus, Hawksmoor treats it’s Sunday beef cut a little differently to the rest. They begin by charring the meat over a charcoal fire, to give it a blackened seal and penetrating the meat with an almost barbecued flavour. Then it is whipped out and popped in the oven. The result is soft, succulent blushing pink beef. To accompany, you’re given a mound of caramelised carrots, sweet roasted shallots, whole cloves of garlic and a big old Yorkshire pudding. But it was the potatoes that made the whole meal sing. The insides were sweet and fluffy, while the out H

leg Ω it’s the house-smoked options that make this place different, and worthy of a spot on our round up. Choose from slow smoked Elqy Valley lamb shoulder or pork rib eye and smoked shoulder. The smoked lamb is a feat: uncharacteristically tender thanks to the cooking process Ω slow cooking over wood smoke helps retain the meat’s natural juices, while the subtle flavour of the wood permeates the meat and softens the farmy taste of the lamb. It was the pulled pork shoulder that stole the show. Succulent tears of sweet pork flesh, piled high, came accompanied by large, golden roast potatoes and a medley of

was salty, crispy and golden brown. Drench everything (and I mean everything) in Hawksmoor's mouthwateringly tasty bone marrow and onion gravy, which is rich and earthy. A meal this good deserves an equally fullbodied wine, so order the 2009 Giacomo Bologna Braida II Baciale Monferrato Rosso, which is full of berry notes and a hint of leather. This'll put your mum’s roast to shame. u ● 5 Air Street, W1J, 020 7406 3980; thehawksmoor.com

FOOD & DRINK / ROUND UP THE ROEBUCK

s there anything better than a Sunday roast? Well, after eating this many great ones, we’d hazard a no. The Roebuck in Hampton Wick is another eatery hitting the roast game out of the park. Sitting on Chiswick High Road, The Roebuck is unassuming and homey. Choose from all the classics, but if you want to take our recommendation, opt for the 28-day aged rib of prime beef. The meat comes flushed, with a generous dollop of horseradish cream on top. A classic combination that never fails to please. Honey-roasted vegetables form a tasty nest for the meat to sit on top of, while red cabbage seasoned with cinnamon and wine, nutty roast potatoes and crisp Yorkshire puddings bulk it out. With our tummies full, but not stuffed, and a dessert menu to entice, we ordered a i

and was lean, pink and impossibly tasty. The high-rise Yorkshire puddings were both impressive and perfectly crisp, seemingly defying gravity perched on top of the mammoth meal. The duck-fat roast potatoes were also a triumph: golden, crunchy outer layers giving way to light and fluffy interiors. The remaining sides set the meal off perfectly – fresh and crunchy greens complimenting the melt-in-your-mouth meat and a generous amount of gravy that kept my dining companion and I mopping up until our plates sparkled. We were sent on our way with a friendly wave; fit to burst but glorying in the content that only a good roast can bring to a Sunday afternoon. u ● 45 High Street, Hampton Wick, KT1, 020 8943 5379; the-foresters.com

THE DOVE

he Dove is undoubtedly one of my favourite pubs in West London. Officially one of the smallest pubs in the city, this Grade II listed building is as rustic and traditional as they come. Low “mind your head” beams, crooked flooring and that peaty, countryside smell, sit by the fire and warm your toes. The terrace out back is a great draw in the summer, as it sits on the bank of the Thames. But, it's winter, so avoid the bone-trembling cold and T

sticky toffee pudding to share. The sponge was light, airy and coated in a syrupy toffee sauce. A truly British and rather lavish affair right through to the end. u ● 72 Hampton Road, Hampton Hill, TW12, 020 8255 8133; roebuck-hamptonhill.co.uk

burrow down by the open fire. Order one of the pub’s famous Sunday roasts, they're truly a sight to behold. The Yorkshire is as it should be, big, fluffy and ideal for mopping up the sumptuous red wine gravy. We opted for roast pork, which is something we’d usually steer clear of, because of how easy it is to overcook it and thus dry it out. But here it was soft, full of flavour (thanks to the delicate rind of fat) and complemented superbly by the light red wine gravy, delicate yorkshire pud, mustard spiked parsnips and carrots, crispy roasties and creamy leaks, and the salty, crispy pork crackling on top just seals the deal. u ● 19 Upper Mall, W6, 020 8748 9474; dovehammersmith.co.uk

traditional British pub located minutes away from central Kingston-upon-Thames, The Foresters boasts an impressive Sunday Lunch menu, with a wide selection of meats, all the trimmings and some extremely tempting sides that encourage maximum indulgance. Our plates arrived groaning with Sunday goodness, turning heads and certainly setting many mouths watering. I went for the traditional beef, a tough decision in the face of so much choice, but one that I absolutely do not regret. The 28 day hung Caledonian rib eye had been carved expertly P

ROYAL TREATMENT Head West for a dose of traditionally British comfort food B y e ly s i a ag n e w

he elegant Princess Victoria sits on a quiet corner. Originally a Victorian gin palace, the popular gastro pub maintains its original charm and character and stands out from the crowd. There was an incredibly friendly welcome as my dinner date and I stepped inside the striking bar area with soaring ceilings and an impressive wine concession. The selection of gins on offer (the menu boasts over 40 gin-inspired cocktails) caught my eye so we opted for a pre-dinner drink at the bar before being seated in our cosy corner of the separate dining room. The restaurant area has a romantic feel, filled with warmth and charm; the Victorian architecture is combined with intricate modern touches. I was thrilled to see a broad offering of British cuisine and traditional country comfort food. With this in mind, I opted for the pie of the day which happened to be a hearty cottage pie but in keeping with the chic restaurant setting, I also started with the Venison Carpaccio, served with truffle oil, garlic mayo, rocket and parmesan. Simply delicious. The Princess Victoria masters a mix of fine-dining and homemade comfort food. Its refined pub grub will add warmth to any winter evening. and Head chef Matt Reuther’s contemporary yet traditional cooking is served up by the incredibly charming staff who are happy to give their recommendation on anything from the gins and wines to the chef’s specials. Brilliant. u T

harlotte’s Place is the first restaurant I have been to where I’ve had to ring the doorbell to enter. It gives a pleasant feeling of visiting a friend’s house. We were offered the tasting menu - a new five-course extravagance that sets Charlotte’s apart as the more sophisticated elder sibling to it’s younger W4 sister bistro. The lemon and polenta amuse bouche followed by a trio of Isle of Wight tomatoes were the perfect palette cleansers. Light, fresh, and a symphony of summer colours. Next came the confit salmon served with vegetable minestrone and the melt in your mouth fish contrasted beautifully with the crunchy vegetables. Time for the mains: Quail and fois gras served with ginger infused apricot sauce and puy lentils. The quail, a heavier yet not overpowering dish, was tender and bursting with assertive flavour.

Finally, two indulgent desserts. A blackberry and port jelly served with juniper ice cream and a white chocolate parfait with dark chocolate and orange sorbet and honeycomb. We compared it to a posh deconstructed crunchie bar. What’s not to love? We matched the food with a white Sancerre from the wine list and Charlotte’s has also drafted in Master sommelier Matt Wilkins to propose a flight of wines to accompany this new tasting menu. We were seen off with a friendly wave from the doorstep. We’d been welcomed, well-fed and fattened up a little for the colder months ahead. Charlotte’s is the perfect place for a fine dining experience in a friendly family setting that doesn’t break the bank. Without a doubt, I will be popping back there soon. u

he name of this dish in Swedish translates to ‘veal-chicken’. I have tried to figure out why, but not succeeded. This veal-chicken is a roulade of veal, filled with Parsley Butter before being braised tender and served with cream sauce. These roulades are often served with Boiled Potatoes and Quick Pickled Cucumber. Sometimes a jar of Blackcurrant Jelly or Rowanberry Jelly can also accompany the dish. ◆

CREAMED BRUSSELS SPROUTS Ser ves 4 repare this recipe with whole or halved heads of Brussels sprouts, blanched before or with the individual leaves picked, like for the salad recipe, and added raw to the bechamel. The second version is not in any way traditional, but I love it. The sprout leaves should be just wilted but still a bit crunchy. ◆

Preparation and cooking time: 5 minutes 600 g/1 lb 5 oz Brussels sprouts, cleaned and trimmed • 1/2 quantity Bechamel Sauce (attached) substituting half the milk with cream • salt and white pepper, to taste 01 Follow instructions for blanching the sprouts (attached). (Or separate the leaves and keep them raw.) 02 Prepare the bechamel sauce. 03 In a small pot, bring the bechamel to a simmer, then add the sprouts. 04 If they are blanched, then heat until they warm through. 05 For raw leaves, simply fold them through the hot sauce just before serving, letting them wilt a bit in the heat. Season well with salt and pepper and serve immediately. ◆

affles are served all over the Nordic region and each country has got a multitude of recipes. Some have eggs in them and others don’t. In general terms a waffle with eggs will be less crisp and more rich than one without. Some versions are leavened with yeast or chemical leavening agents and others are not. If leavened with yeast or not at all, the recipe will produce a pancake-like texture and if leavened with chemical leavening agents, a shorter texture. Waffles are often served as lunch, a snack in the afternoon or as a dessert. In Norway, waffles can also be found with Brown Cheese for breakfast. My favourite kind of waffle, crisp and delicate in an almost unreal way. Enjoy them hot off the iron with whipped cream and jam. ◆

Into the

BLUE Absolutely travels into the depths of the Caribbean to discover what makes the British Virgin Islands so special W o r d s R o M y va n d e n B r o e k e

I

’ve only been to the Caribbean twice in my life. The first time was when I was 12; my family decided to hop aboard my dad’s Boeing 747 (he was a long-standing pilot for British Airways) and fly to Barbados for a week in the sun, while the second happened more than 15 years later. There was something really magical about my first experience of the Caribbean. Perhaps it was my parents' mutual adoration for this small mound of paradise in the Lesser Antilles (they spent many summers here, including their honeymoon, prior to the arrival of me and my brother) or that it was my first experience of the Caribbean. Or perhaps it was just how perfect it all was. Crystal azure seas, barbecued jumbo prawns, me with braided hair closed with multicoloured beads, body boarding, sitting up front in the cockpit as my dad brought the plane into land – every last bit of the holiday was a dream. Which is possibly why I’ve not been back, for fear of spoiling my memory of it. Until now. The invitation landed in my inbox towards the end of last year: a five-day trip to Virgin Gorda, a small isle in the British Virgin Islands. Richard Branson has a couple of islands in this neck of the woods (Necker and Moskito), Google’s Larry Page owns a neighbouring island, while Morgan Freeman has a home on Virgin Gorda, which only furthered my desire to go. I was in. The trip would take us to the ‘ultimate Caribbean retreat’ otherwise known as Valley Trunk, a private estate on Virgin Gorda, the third largest island in the BVIs. Virgin Gorda was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his famous voyage to the Americas. He spotted the undulating isle from afar and, after likening it to a pregnant woman reclining on her side, christened it Virgin Gorda, which when translated means 'the fat virgin'. Charming. The island itself is verdant, lush and

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST steep, populated by no more than 4,000 people. Some of the main tourist attractions − aside from the white sand beaches, turquoise waters and warm weather − are the prehistoric granite boulders, evidence of the island’s volcanic origin, that scatter the coastline and form bathing grottoes that fill with warm water from the sea. Valley Trunk, a 19-acre coastal estate owned by the prominent Wildenstein family, has been private since the 1980s, but since opening last year has become a key destination for those with enough spare cash to holiday in this part of the Caribbean. The Wildenstein family, who made their hefty fortune in art and horseracing, decided that while they would still use the home on occasion, they needed to keep it alive and working and so opened it up to the public. This might usually imply financial woes, but instead the rental income goes straight back into the family’s black rhino conservation farm, Ol Jogi, in Kenya. The gardens are a thing of beauty: paths are lined with palm trees and vivid borders hold explosions of hot pink and fuchsia bougainvillea. The lagoon-shaped pool is retro, but works in its environment, while the interior decor is smart 70s – though nice and clean, it could have done with a slight update. That said, there is something about the bamboo furniture, pink-and-green bathrooms and mirrored walls that works. Away from the bedrooms (of which there are eight) a couple of essential updates have taken place, the best being the newly added screening room with an HD projector and a library of films. Although exploring the 19 acres of gardens and beach is not too much of an ask to do by foot (there’s a nice jungle walk down to the beach) the resort actually has a troop of golf buggies for you to race around

Profits from renting it out GOES into a BLACK RHINO

CONSERVATION FARM IN KENYA the estate in. A short drive down to the beach brings you to the Bali House, which is set back from the beach and raised up on bamboo stilts. The Bali House offers great vistas out over your very own private beach, perfect for a lunch to escape the midday sun or a late night dinner before strolling on to the beach for a bonfire. There are a couple of treatment rooms below deck, but I’d recommend being super lazy and ordering a massage (or some other treatment) to enjoy in the comfort of your own room. The beach is probably one of the highlights of the estate; a long stretch of pure white sand hemmed by crystal clear Caribbean-cum-North Atlantic sea. The Valley Trunk Bay is perfect: Jurassic Park

style boulders are perched along the coast, which remains shallow until there’s a sudden dip in the seabed. I could have swapped between sun lounger and shallow bathing for the full five days, but activities were a must, and so came an afternoon of paddle-boarding, canoeing and snorkeling, enhanced by a few bottles of Carib beer. We were reluctantly torn away from our lazy beach days for a full-day excursion out on a boat. The boat wasn’t anything too snazzy, but comfortable nevertheless, and had a nice nostalgic feel in keeping with the rest of our stay. While my travel companions were more than happy to sunbathe on the bow, catch glimpses of Branson’s islands and jump into the cerulean sea, for me the offer of scuba diving was too good to pass up, particularly as I’ve never done it before. I had the chance to practice in our pool earlier that day, but being strapped and hooked up in all the apparatus, standing precariously on the side of a boat, was a different state of affairs. Not thinking too much about what lay beneath, I hurled myself off the side of the boat and into the clear water. Before long I was floating through the warm waters of the BVIs with my instructor, who had told me that we would explore for no longer than 20 minutes. Nearly an hour later, we rose for air. Diving is something I have always wanted to try. The beautiful coral, electric blue fish and (planned) diversion via an underwater plane wreck had me breathless. Back on dry land, we experienced one of the estate’s famous beach bonfires: the night began in the Bali House where we were treated to a feast of barbecued wahoo, yellowtail, grouper and red snapper; with fresh salads of rice, okra and saltfish; and some signature British Virgin Island green soup, Kallaloo, all washed down with excellent wines and a myriad of cocktails. After dinner we were escorted to the beach, where we lounged as locals played folk songs in a type of ‘scratch band’ famously associated with the British Virgin Islands. The five days flew, and while the journey home wasn’t as quick (or exciting) as the one-stop flight from Barbados with my dad, it was far smoother than expected. A swift change in St Maarten and a quick turnaround in Paris meant we were back in London 13 hours later. Barbados, Antigua and the like may be slightly more convenient to visit, but I recommend taking the extra flight – you’ll discover a whole new world somewhere as beautiful and relatively untouched as this. u Rates start from £3,850 per night based on 1-4 people. TRAVEL / STAYCATION THE AREA

T

hough hardly an undiscovered area, Clerkenwell’s charm feels somewhat hidden in plain sight. Crammed with acclaimed eateries and quirky museums, there is plenty to fill a weekend. For those looking for a little retail therapy, the Clerkenwell Vintage Fashion Fair in The Old Finsbury Town Hall on Rosebery Avenue will have you feverishly rifling through racks of stunning clothes (despite not intending to buy anything, I came away with a 1980s Burberry trench coat and rather fetching deerstalker). For cocktails in the evening, there's nowhere with more character than Zetter Townhouse but before you settle in for the night, make sure to take a wander through Exmouth Market to discover its abundant and multicultural restaurants. On Sunday, fans of literature should make sure to pay a visit to the Charles Dickens Museum before settling in for a hearty pub lunch. u

THE APARTMENT

H

THE SELLING POINT

alfway between a hotel and an Airbnb, The Rosebery’s aparthotels represent the best of both worlds. Stylishly decorated in muted greys with a splash of sunshine yellow, the suite looks like you wish your home did – free from clutter, with a fridge just waiting to be stocked and a conceirge a phonecall away. I stayed in a one-bedroom suite, although they do have studio apartments and two bedroom suites, too. The comfy sitting room was ideal for spending a lazy morning and a particularly lovely feature was the shuttered window that opened all the way, letting in the sun and revealing a lovely London view. u

H

oused in a stunning Victorian building in the heart of Little Italy, the aparthotel retains personality and atmosphere while providing luxury and convenience. As a result, the real USP of The Rosebery is its flexibility. On arrival, I discover a few essentials for dinner and breakfast laid out meaning that guests can hole up and never leave, even ordering in breakfast and lunch from the Printworks Kitchen next door. Alternatively, guests can use The Rosebery as more of a base to explore the surrounding area and the rest of London easily by jumping on the tube at Angel or Farringdon, both a short walk away. u

MY FAVOURITE DESIGNER IS… Me. Just kidding. Or am I? If I had to pick just one, it would probably be Bonnie Cashin (but Alexander Girard and David Hicks are close runners up). Given the addictive nature of smartphones, should they be allowed in our schools? With a possible ban in the offing, Absolutely looks at the evidence Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e

hat’s your child like with a smartphone? Does removing it feel like stealing a banana from a starving monkey? Given their addictive power over our children, what place do they have in our schools? That’s what the government’s education advisor, Tom Bennett, has been tasked with finding out. As part of a wide-ranging inquiry into discipline in schools, he’s investigating the effect of mobile phones in classrooms and whether they should be banned. Bennett says: “Technology is transforming society and even classrooms – but all too often we hear of lessons being disrupted by the temptation of the smartphone. Learning is hard work and children are all too aware of this. So when there's a smartphone in their pocket offering instant entertainment and reward, they can be easily distracted.” More than 90 per cent of teenagers now own mobile phones – the majority of which are smartphones– yet there is now compelling evidence that academic results improve when phones are banned from schools. A recent study from the London School of Economics found phone-free classrooms showed sustained academic improvement with test results boosted by six per cent. The research, published last May, found that banning mobile phones from classrooms could benefit students’ learning by as much as an additional week’s worth of schooling over an academic year. The report also suggested that banning phones would most help low-achieving children and those from the poorest backgrounds. There is currently no official government policy about mobile

SMARTPHONES – like NUCLEAR WEAPONS – cannot be disinvented. WE MUST find ways to CONTROL THEM phone use in schools and school rules differ widely. One third of schools ban mobile phones outright - GCSE results at Ebbsfleet Academy in Kent have almost doubled since the school banned smartphones in 2013 - with a further fifth limiting their use in lessons; other schools allow phones on the school premises, provided they are kept on ‘silent’ all day. Boarding schools have an additional set of challenges. Heathfield School in Ascot has dealt with it by giving girls aged 11-13 old-fashioned mobile phones with no internet access, apps or camera; they can only ring or send text messages. Pupils are allowed smartphones in

97 CHIS_Nov15_Education.indd 97

Year 9 but have to hand them in before they go to bed. Last month, the head of Ofsted, Sir Michael Wilshaw, called for headteachers to ban mobile phones from secondary schools but not everyone agrees. Brian Lightman, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, says: “Smartphones are powerful technologies which most people use in their working lives therefore schools must teach young people to use them responsibly. How they do that is a professional judgment.” Some schools — mostly independent — are actually encouraging pupils to bring their phones into the classroom. John Moule, warden at Radley School, says: “The use of mobile phones is encouraged if the teacher wants them used. It can be extraordinarily helpful in a lesson to have several internet searches going on or for an experiment to be videoed.” Andrew Halls, head of King’s College School in Wimbledon, says smartphones “can be a huge distraction but, like nuclear weapons, they cannot be disinvented. As schools, we have to find ways to permit them but to control them. A screenshot of the board can be a useful revision tool.” As yet, Bennett is undecided about a blanket ban. “My personal recommendation is that schools think very cautiously and carefully before allowing them.” He is concerned that children are getting access to the technology too young. “People ask me, ‘When should I give my child a smartphone?’ and I say, ‘Whenever you’re comfortable with them viewing pornography’, because their curiosity will take them there. “My personal belief is that I don’t think a child should have a smartphone until they are 16, unless it is under adult supervision.” ◆

s a young girl I watched my parents build their own home from scratch. Standing on that building site watching the house go up, I instantly knew I wanted to be involved in property. Through school and university property remained a passion, but I fell into estate agency a little by accident. I had my sights set on being a surveyor and completed my MSc in Commercial Property Management in 2008, which in hindsight was pretty terrible timing. It was at that exact time that we were hit with recession and as a result, surveying firms quickly cancelled their graduate schemes. I had to change plan. After a stint travelling in South America, I’d had time to think about what I wanted to do and decided I’d give lettings a go. I moved to London, started at the agency then known as Bushells and have never looked back. I immediately loved the fast-paced nature of the lettings market, the exceptional architecture London offers and the opportunity to meet and build relationships with

people from all walks of life. I progressed quickly through the ranks; I began my career in the Dulwich office as a lettings negotiator and gradually worked my way west, moving first to Clapham and then on to manage the lettings team at our Hammersmith branch. I really feel I’ve found my home in West London. Hammersmith offers so much; the charm of the riverside with its beautiful walks and excellent pubs (fun fact: ‘Rule, Britannia’ was written at The Dove!), the community feel of Brackenbury Village and a strong cultural scene including the Apollo and Lyric Theatre. Plus, a cracking bridge! It’s an exciting time to be in the area, with the planned regeneration of King Street and the ambitious proposals to turn the A4 into a ‘flyunder’, which is a fantastic opportunity to reconnect

Hammersmith with the river. I really wouldn’t choose to be anywhere else. The lettings market in Hammersmith continues to perform strongly and after the uncertainty surrounding the election, we have seen steady growth return. Earlier this year, after much research and planning, we underwent a full rebrand from Bushells to Portico; I am thrilled that our new name has been so well received. We also launched a new set of packages with the ultimate aim of providing a genuinely useful service to our landlords whatever their circumstances, with a uniquely personal approach to take the hassle out of being a landlord. Both our long-standing landlords as well as new clients have responded really well to the new packages. The real pleasure of the job for me is building long-term relationships with a variety people and being able to help them achieve their goals by giving advice in a friendly and consultative way. I look forward to helping many more clients in the future. ◆

PROPERTY / STYLE BIBLE THE HUF HAUS DOES NOT FIT THE ACCEPTED NORMS FOR A CLASSIC NEW-BUILD LUXURY HOME

WOW-HAUS The ‘German spaceship’ has landed

I

t would seem that we cannot get enough of Huf Haus, the pre-fabricated German homes made famous by the Channel 4 TV series Grand Designs. The company recently built its 200th in the UK and yet, such popularity is hard to fathom. The Huf Haus does not fit the accepted norms for a classic new-build luxury home. As London’s leafier suburbs bear witness, these tend to be Georgian, Victorian or Arts-and-Crafts influenced designs.

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

Chis_Nov15_prop_HAUS.indd 120

Just how much the Huf Haus is a design departure can be seen at the company’s new showhouse overlooking the Brooklands motor racing circuit in Surrey. It’s a fitting place to have built it – Huf Haus is the Audi of house building as the company delights in embracing both Vorsprung (‘progress’) as well as Technic. The latest great leap forward, as featured within the show home, is insulation so efficient that the property has zero fuel bills, the company claims, helped by a heating system that runs off the power of melting ice. The Huf Haus is also popular because it is so modular. Peter Huf, chief executive of the company, says: “The layout of the property safeguards absolute flexibility and while a family might outgrow a standard family home, the layout of the HUF accommodates growing families and their changing needs.” But it’s the speed of their construction that has made the Huf Haus a growing trend. A traditional build can take a year or more and requires an architect, designer,

planning consultant and an army of builders. A Huf Haus normally takes only a week to make watertight, 12 to 14 weeks to fit out and just a handful of technicians to build. The company has been heading up Europe’s ‘pre-manufactured’ home revolution since the early 1960s and it now exports to China. But Huf Haus got its big break here back in 2003 when Channel 4’s TV programme Grand Designs featured Greta and David Iredale, a retired couple who were building a four-bedroom Huf Haus in Waltonon-Thames. Overnight the fortunes of the company were transformed, helped by presenter Kevin McCloud’s ecstatic marvelling over the ‘German spaceship’; its engineering quality; the ‘construction superheroes’ who put it up and the fact that it took just four days to build against a six-day schedule.

There is just one downside to the Huf Haus – the expense, which can work out more than a traditional build. While the entrylevel Huf Haus, the Modum, costs approximately £300,000 to build the bigger Huf Haus designs start at £500,000 – and that’s excluding the cost of the land. But the good news is that, once built, a Huf Haus can be worth 5-10% more than its traditional counterpart of the same size, making up for the extra construction cost. u For more information visit

Even the reported growth in wages, a key inflationary driver, is not yet embedded enough in the economy and there persist, in my opinion, too many global risks for the MPC to

assume a rate rise before the second half of 2016. At home, London property remains a safe haven for overseas money and low rates at least help UK borrowers and buyers’ affordability. Q&A HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS AREA?

On the 1st October we celebrated our one year anniversary in Turnham Green. We gave out coffee and cake all day! WHAT IS YOUR ETHOS?

I am committed to providing outstanding customer service by giving honest professional advice and building long term relationships with both buyers and vendors. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PROPERTIES RIGHT NOW?

Cygnet House is my favourite – I love Georgian architecture and this house is particularly special as it has incredible views of the River Thames. MARKET PREDICTIONS FOR THE COMING MONTHS?

I expect to see a lot of activity this autumn. We have seen strong price growth this past quarter, going to sealed bids on five properties. ◆

I EXPECT TO SEE A LOT OF ACTIVITY THIS AUTUMN. WE HAVE SEEN STRONG PRICE GROWTH... Knight Frank Chiswick, 020 3757 6230; knightfrank.com

COLLINGBOURNE ROAD, W12 ÂŁ769,950 SHARE OF FREEHOLD What makes this maisonette exceptional? Well it's not the two light double bedrooms both with built in wardrobes and one with a wellappointed en suite. It's not its own front door, or the new wiring and plumbing. It's not the 18 foot private west facing garden or the fact that it has no onward chain. All of the above are of course very desirable, desirable but not exceptional. What is exceptional is the astonishing 432 square foot kitchen/reception room. The sum of the parts? Exceptional.
