t's enormously exciting to be featuring Dominic West this month. The Sheffieldborn Etonian may be a huge Hollywood star but he still lives in Shepherds Bush, in a colourful house that he shares with his wife and children. He could be so much more starry than that, though he will admit to noticing his heartthrob status among the mothers at his children's school. They look at him slightly too much, he tells us. So if that's you, and your children are playdating at the Wests, then don't think he hasn't noticed. He also tells us about his role in Finding Dory (something he took on both to please his kids and to reunite with Idris Elba) as well as the next season of The Affair (it starts in November). But we're not all about Hollywood stars in

7 CHIS_Oct16_EDS_LETTER.indd 7

this issue, of course. Mostly our focus is closer to home as we begin to think about autumn and the new season's fashions and furnishings. We focus on bohemian, gothic-style fashions, with drapey velvets and muted shades marking a departure from the thin cottons and candy shades we've been used to wearing all summer. And homes-wise, we're looking at fireplaces and related new technologies to prepare us for when the dreaded chill kicks in. Here's hoping you enjoy the issue. ◆

RODIN AND DANCE

Fro m 2 0 O c t o b e r T he C o u r ta u l d G a ll e r y his is the first major T exhibition to explore Rodin’s fascination with dance and bodies in extreme acrobatic poses. His experimental small-scale sculptures are only 30cm or so tall and explore the loose and natural form rather than the specify of the human anatomy. Created in his final years, these remarkable terracotta and plaster sculptures were only shown to his close circle of friends. THE EY EXHIBTION

Following three disconnected young adults, this play looks at a group of lives that have been reduced to a series of transactions. A place where shopping is sexy and f***ing is a job. Rarely staged but regularly influential, this is a prophetic vision of the future that will make you reflect on life. Black comedy doesn’t get much better than this.

Throughout O c t ob er Tate Mo dern oted for his Modernist N aesthetic and Afro-Cuban imagery, Wilfredo Lam addressed political themes through art. Inspired by social injustice, nature and spirituality, he moved within avant-garde circles and was closely associated with Pablo Picasso. t would appear that Dominic West has mellowed somewhat since his days playing bluecollar Baltimore cop Jimmy McNulty in hit HBO drama The Wire. Having garnered quite the reputation as a ladies’ man, the ruggedly handsome actor has shed his lothario image and is now very much settled down with his wife, landscape gardener Catherine Fitzgerald and their three children, Dora, 10, Senan, 8, and Francis, 7. The family lives in a threestorey 19th century house in Shepherds Bush, which the couple converted from flats back into a singular family home and filled with art and ornaments, books and trinkets from their travels and bright textiles, creating an air of sophisticated bohemia.

With Ruth Wilson in The Affair

Having embraced his role as a handson family man, West was understandably delighted when he got the call asking him to voice a lazy sea lion in Finding Dory, the follow up to Disney Pixar’s animated monster-hit Finding Nemo and admits that a huge part of taking the role was to impress his children, who reacted gleefully: “Jaws, floor, game over. Yeah, I've been dining off this for a long time, bragging about it to all the other parents for two years. They all hate me,” jokes the actor. The film is set one year after the 2003 original and finds our finned friends – Nemo, his father Marlin and of course, Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) - living peacefully in the reef. One day, amnesiac Dory has a flashback from her childhood and decides to track down her parents who lived at the Jewel of Morro Bay in

15 Chis_Oct16_Dominic_West.indd 15

California, leading the trio on another madcap adventure where they encounter dangerous giant squids, a seven legged octopus and a confused beluga whale who is unable to echolocate. West plays Rudder, one of two cockney sea lions who are tasked with helping our aquatic heroes, alongside none other than his Wire co-star Idris Elba, who plays Fluke. It is the first time the pair have worked together since their days as nemeses on the mean streets of Baltimore, resulting in plenty of playful banter and improvisation in the recording studio. Elba said all he needed to hear was 'sea lion, Dory, Dominic West,' and he was sold, with West agreeing it was a ‘no-brainer’. “I hadn't seen Idris for a long time and the idea of us being in a scene together was great because we actually didn't share too many scenes together in The Wire. We were more antagonists, always plotting, so that was nice – and I was very keen to see him again.” It was actually Dory’s voice star, Ellen DeGeneres, who helped the sequel come about, having campaigned tirelessly since the original. She has said that this is a film that the world needs right now; that Dory’s positivity is something we can harness to guide us through these difficult times. West, having confessed to feeling a ‘sadness’ and ‘change in the air in London’ since the Brexit vote, wholeheartedly agrees: “I woke up the other day and thought, 'Oh great, I'm going to see Finding Dory for the first time with my kids and I couldn't be more excited.' It's the perfect kind of film to get you out of whatever blues you're going through.” Many people think of West as the stereotypical Old Etonian, but the 46-yearold was actually born in Sheffield and is one of seven siblings in a close-knit Catholic family. His father owned a plastic

factory and its success afforded his son’s illustrious education. Recently, West told the Radio Times that being sent to Eton was ‘the worst feeling’ he’d ever had, even comparing it to the grief he felt when his parents died. He does however credit the experience with helping him become the great actor he is today, saying: “I learned to bury the emotional effects of that and then I went to drama school and had to dig it all up again." But academic credentials don’t always lead to instant success and West’s career has been hard won. After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1995 there were seven years of bit-parts in films (he played a palace Guard in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace) and small TV roles before landing the job that changed his life in The Wire. Critics and viewers alike were blown away by the gritty and multi-faceted drama which highlighted the many ramifications of the illegal drug trade in America, and were wowed by West and Elba, who played arrogant detective McNulty and drug kingpin Stringer Bell respectively, finding their accents and swagger to be so convincing that people found it hard to believe that the pair were from the UK and not born and bred in Baltimore.

in Showtime drama The Affair, which will air its third series in November. Exploring the emotional effects and fallout of an extramarital relationship between Solloway and Alison Lockhart (Ruth Wilson) after they meet in the resort town of Montauk in Long Island, the show has proved to be emotional, steamy and immensely popular, earning West a certain breed of fan. “I'm getting recognized a lot more, little side-glances. And it's happening in the strangest places. I went to a football camp with my sons during the summer and kept getting all these looks from the mums. You know those, trying to catch your eye and holding

it a little too long. And you have an idea what they're thinking,” he says with a laugh. For his wife this perhaps, isn’t so entertaining, especially after West was reported as saying that Fitzgerald hadn’t watched the show, something he is quick to deny. “Rubbish, I said that as a joke. She's seen it, dips in and out, it's just my job to her, she not irrational like that. Will she watch it all? Of course not, she's a very busy woman with a lot on her plate.” And when pressed on whether she had been on set during one of ‘those scenes’ he quips back with a chortle: “I love that, 'those scenes’. I don't even want to be there during those scenes!”u

I hadn't seen IDRIS IN A LONG TIME and the idea of us being IN A SCENE TOGETHER WAS GREAT

The enormous success of the show not only made the actor an overnight A-lister but also a household heartthrob, and West, who was dating aristocrat Polly Astor (the mother of his eldest child, Martha, now 18), is the first to admit that he got caught up in hyperbole of fame and wanted to play the field a bit longer. He has since expressed regret for his playboy behaviour and is much changed after marrying his former college sweetheart, Fitzgerald. In the last few years he has terrified audiences with his eerily accurate portrayal of serial killer Fred West in Appropriate Adult; been nominated for a Golden Globe in stunning period drama The Hour; and played the legendary Hemingway in recent film Genius. However, his most revered role of late has been as suave adulterer Noah Solloway

et ready to be taken back to the era that shaped the world as we know it. The V&A's explosive new exhibition promises to be as daring and sensational as the people who dominate it. The exhibition, 'You Say You Want a Revolution? Records and Rebels 1966-70' will shed new light on the generation that radically revolutionised the social, cultural and intellectual norms of the 1960s. Showcasing more than 350 objects, including some major international loans, Records and Rebels will be split into six sections to display everything from a Mary Quant skirt suit to the first Apple computer. Other highlights include underground magazines like the International Times, a moon rock on loan from NASA, original artworks by Richard

In creating the exhibition, the V&A has worked in partnership with iconic clothing brand Levi's. Since their invention by Levi Strauss & Co. in 1873, jeans have become one of the most recognisable items of clothing in the world. The brand's association with individuality and rebellion makes it the perfect partner. Director of the V&A, Martin Roth, said of the partnership: “The brand, which has such resonance with many of the cultural and social changes taking place during the period covered by the exhibition, is a very fitting sponsor”. The V&A has also joined forces with Sennheiser, one of the world's leading manufacturers of headphones, microphones and wireless transmission systems, to provide a completely

The exhibition opens with a recreation of Carnaby Street and focuses on the revolution in youth identity in 1966. The thriving fashion scene and rise of influential figures like Twiggy and Mick Jagger led companies to aim their designs towards the younger generation. As well as iconic outfits and stage costumes, photographs by David Bailey and artwork by Bridget Riley will also feature.

As the world's leading museum of art, design and performance with collections unrivalled in their scope and diversity, the V&A is the perfect setting for this vast and immersive exhibition. Prepare to experience the late 60s in their finest moments, as the revolutionary era that rocked the world.  The second section focuses on clubs and counterculture and explores themes of experimentation and alternative lifestyles. Drugs, psychedelia and pirate radio exhibits surround the central installation, an evocation of London’s notorious UFO club. Politics is the focus of the third section, with the spotlight placed on the dramatic demonstrations in Paris during the 1968 student riots and the anti-Vietnam movement. Newsreel footage and protest propaganda are used to vividly portray the wide-spread reach of youth solidarity. This exhibition environment is followed by a section on consumerism, which boomed during the late 60s following the arrival of the credit card. Here visitors

will explore the excess of the Montreal and Osaka World Expos and their futuristic approach to consumerism. In the fifth section, the focal point will be the monumental Woodstock, which saw more than 400,000 people come together for four days of peace and music. The exhibition will goes behind the scenes to reveal the organisation behind the record-breaking event as well as showcasing some of the costumes worn by the iconic performers. ringing is having a moment. In the world of Athena Procopiou, fringing is always having a moment. The Greek designer's inspirations are entirely rooted in the 1970s, with an aesthetic that takes in Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks and Jimi Hendrix. For her, it's all about floatey, drapey fabrics with psychedelic prints (albeit digital, she's not a retro devotee) and lots of fringing. 'At heart I'm a hippy,' she explains, over a syringe shot called Firestarter at Westbourne Grove's Farmacy. She has been doing fringing for the past four years, ever since her first collection of fringed scarves was picked up by Net-a-Porter and sold out. For her,

It’s all about

FLOATEY, DRAPEY FABRICS with

psychedelic prints

it all started with graphic design and pattern, and now her Hendrix-inspired kimonos ('he wore a kimono on stage with a belt') have spawned a larger collection of summery resortwear that includes coverups and wafty dresses as well as sharper swimwear and a wide range of fabulous fringed kimonos. On the beach or at home, this is the ultimate in loungewear. u athenaprocopiou.com

acials for men may not be a new thing, but most facials are primarily aimed at women. That's why K West Spa has designed a menspecific treatment, though as spa novice, I’m not entirely sure what to expect from my Men’s C+ Energy Facial. This is a therapy that uses a cocktail of plant extracts, trace elements and vitamins. I am introduced to Veronika who performs my treatment. Friendly and accommodating, she gently applies numerous creams and serums, interspersed with refreshing hot flannels to cleanse. A Germaine de Cappuccini detoxifying facial mask is then left to set, which peels off with ease.

My skin is left feeling SOFT AND NOURISHED, with opened pores and a NOTICEABLE GLOW

More than expected, my treatment also consists of an upper body massage which relaxes my shoulders, arms and hands, with pressure points around the body targeted at the start and end of my session. My skin is left feeling soft and nourished, with opened pores and a noticeable glow. Thoughtfully, K West makes sure to offer after-care advice, suggesting a follow-up treatment and a daily face cream to hydrate. After the 50-minute session, I am escorted to a dimly-lit relaxation room where a comfortable bed and soothing music awaits to prolong my newfound serenity. ◆ ● K W E S T H O T E L & S PA Richmond Way, W14; 020 8008 6600 k-west.co.uk

SUN SAFE Everybody loves a bit of sunshine but protecting your skin is important. The Park Club MediSpa is here to help

T

he sun is still out. Most of the population is so much happier and just wants to get outside and keep enjoying it. Of course we do – this is England; we never know when winter will be upon us. But it’s interesting to note that although we will go to great lengths just to avoid a cold, we are generally quite blasé about skin cancer. How many of us really know the facts or what a melanoma looks like? The Park Club MediSpa offers a state-of-the-art mole screening technology provided by Dr Bela, the resident consultant dermatologist. The founder of MelanomaMobil clinic and its comparative mole screening technology, Dr Bela’s mole check method outperformed a benchmark with 24% in an in-house study. If you’ve been out in the sun, have moles that concern you or just want peace of mind, book a mole check. Ca s e stu dy Botox treatment saved a life s part of Dr Bela’s standard A practice for his aesthetic patients at The Park Club MediSpa, he provides a complimentary mole check.

If you have MOLES that CONCERN YOU or just want PEACE OF MIND book a mole check He explains: "Some patients take the opportunity, others not. Last month Su came for an anti-wrinkle treatment and said that she had noticed a tiny but changing mole. After the examination, we recommended surgical removal straight away. The histology confirmed a 0.4mm thick melanoma skin cancer, which means that it has been caught just in time. Su’s life has been saved. We asked Su whether she would have shown her mole if not having a doctor’s visit anyway. She said possibly not, since the mole was very tiny and not suspicious for her." This is the most important learning point with

melanoma: while it is in early stage, it is completely silent. People with high risk (high number of moles, asymmetrical moles, family history of skin cancer or history of sunburn) should have a mole check even if they are not aware of anything suspicious. To book a mole check with Dr Bela and have a peace of mind or for a free aesthetic consultation, call The Park Club MediSpa.  East Acton Lane, W3 7HB, 020 8743 1900; theparkclubmedispa.co.uk

FOOD & DRINK / RECIPES getting a good colour. 6 At the last minute, add a few spoonfuls of the stock and reduce to a sticky sauce to glaze the meat. Place on a serving plate and garnish with the sesame seeds, roasted garlic and spring onion. 7 To make the ketchup, blitz together all the ingredients in a blender or food processor until smooth. Transfer to a small serving bowl. Put the lettuce leaves and kimchi in serving bowls, and get the rice and Potato Bokkeum ready to serve. 8 For the anchovies, heat some oil in a deep-fat fryer or deep pan to 180°C. Mix the flour with enough cold sparkling water to make a thick batter. Dip the anchovies in the batter and deep-fry for a few minutes until crispy. 9 Drain briefly on kitchen paper. Eat by filling the lettuce leaves with the belly and any mixture of the side dishes. Play about with different fillings and drink lots of soju shots.

ere, instead of a slow-cook in the oven, we are doing a slow-cook in the smoker.

M e th o d : Smoker cooking temperature: 120–130°C Cooking time: 1–1½ hours end internal breast Temperature: 68–70°C 1 Give your chicken your favourite rub and set your smoker to 120°C. 2 As the smoker temperature will not be as accurate as the oven, you need to be more flexible with the cooking time than with a roast chicken. Use a probe thermometer to check that the

breasts hit 68°C; with touch, this is the point where the breasts just begin to firm up. 3 Don’t cook the chicken longer than this to be safe because it will self-cook a little further once it’s out of the smoker, and you can always give it more time after it’s jointed. That way you avoid cooking the whole thing dry. 4 You can either eat the chicken straight away, or leave it to cool at room temperature for an hour, then roast in the oven at 240°C for 15 minutes to get a crispier skin. Try served with Gochujang mayo. ◆

I n g r e d i e nt s 2 fennel bulbs, one left whole and the other thinly sliced • 3 courgettes, thickly sliced lengthways • 2 Tropea onions or red onions, cut in half lengthways (unpeeled) • 3 spring onions • 1 leek • 4 white/purple/ green sprouting broccoli stalks • 3 English asparagus spears • 1 globe artichoke, trimmed, quartered lengthways • 1 small bunch dandelion leaves • 1 romaine lettuce, cut in half lengthways through the core For the dressing: Olive oil • Lemon juice • 4 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley • 1 small handful chives, cut into 2.5cm lengths 2 tablespoons puffed wild rice • 1 tablespoon crispy garlic slices • Couple of grates of Parmesan cheese • Maldon salt M e th o d : 1 Cook the whole fennel bulb in the hot coals for 10 minutes until blackened, then peel off the outer charred layer. Set aside. 2 Lay the fennel and courgette slices, onion halves, spring onions, leek, broccoli, asparagus and artichoke quarters on the BBQ grill. Cook until the vegetables are tender and heavily charred. As they are cooked, remove them from the grill. Leave the leek until it is blackened all over, then peel off the outer layer. Roughly chop up all the veg. 3 Grill the dandelion leaves for a few seconds, and the lettuce halves on one side until almost black. 4 Combine all the grilled vegetables on a large platter. Dress with olive oil, lemon juice and salt, then sprinkle with the herbs, puffed wild rice, crispy garlic and Parmesan. ◆ Recipes taken from Low & Slow by Neil Rankin with photography by Paul WinchFurness, published by Ebury Press, £25

INTO THE WILD We take the trip of a lifetime to find the real king of the jungle W o r d s R o m y va n d e n B r o e k e

W

hen I was five years old, I remember my Dad returning from one of his long haul trips to Los Angeles. Usually, he’d bring back edible presents – Lifesaver sweets and Hershey’s Kisses – but this one particular time he brought us back something else. Out of his small cabin bag came a rectangular box, a VHS, and on the front was a cartoon lion, surrounded by a pack of other wild animals – a wildebeest, a meercat and a mandrill – all standing proud on a large rock. It wasn’t long before the video was thrust into the player and my brother and I were hooked on The Lion King. Ever since that morning, when we delved into Disney’s representation of the African wild, we have both dreamt of going there ourselves to experience the natural world at, well, its most natural. Our mutual desire to visit the land of lions has never ceased. So after 12 years of discussing, and one and a half years of planning, we were on our way to Nairobi for the trip of a lifetime. The flight with Kenya Airways was a breeze, and before we knew it we were ushered out of Nairobi Airport and packed onto a single engine Safarilink plane and on our way to our first port of call in northern Kenya.

If you’re feeling brave,

THE TEAM AT SEGERA will happily set YOU UP A BED OUTSIDE SEGERA RETREAT

O

ur first stop was Segera Retreat, just north of the equator, on the Laikipia Plateau. This part of Kenya is an important migratory corridor within the Ewaso ecosystem – to put it simply, it is buzzing with life. The resort, which sits in the shadow of Mount Kenya, is a lush nirvana in the middle of wild grassland. Made up of a ring of luxurious stilt villas and an oasis-style private pool, each villa runs on solar energy and has a private balcony facing the bush and an al fresco Jacuzzi, which is ideal for a postsafari soak. While you’re there, you will also catch a glimpse of some of the park’s wildlife drinking at one of the watering holes nearby. If you’re feeling particularly brave, the team at Segera will happily set you up a bed outside, so you can star-gaze until you drift off. Before the land was acquired by Jochn Zeitz in 2005 it was overrun with

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST

poachers. But an eight-year conservation project transformed it into a reserve committed to protecting and cultivating the land and its animals. Alongside this, Zeitz invested time and money on initiatives to help preserve the wildlife and improve the lives of indigenous people. Safari is a bit of a tourist trap. Finding oneself alone with a lion or a rhino is, unfortunately, unlikely. In fact, people warned us to expect a flurry of 4x4s jumping dunes to get a glimpse of anything moving on the savanna. But clearly these people didn’t visit Segera. Our experience here was one of solitude and discovery. The resort has only eight villas, which means it is never overrun. Secondly, it’s the only resort in the 50,000 acres of wilderness, which means a fleet of noisy Jeeps just isn’t a concern. Our game drives tended to be in the evening – a 5.30pm departure, when the temperature dropped – with the hope of us spotting something during three-hour trips. We saw plenty: lions (only a few, mind), elephants, giraffe, zebra, antelope, buffalo and even a hippo bathing at the watering hole by my room. While the wildlife is certainly the draw here, there’s plenty more to enjoy. The food, for example. The staff at Segera will do everything in their power to ensure you are happy and well-fed, and are more than happy to take requests. If

Segera lays on a surprise Out of Africa style picnic in the bush

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST plenty of other safari dwellers, so it’s less intimate than the Segera safari. But the wildlife is abundant: male lions laze under the shade of a tree, lionesses sit in packs across the savanna, the distinctive Masai giraffes run alongside your car, elephants wander across the bush in their hordes, and Black rhino can be found. This prehistoric beast has inhabited the world for some 60 million years and, after years of poaching, is now an endangered species. It is believed there are only 2,500 left in pockets of Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya, Namibia and Tanzania. And it

you’re craving pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast, you can have them. Or is chicken curry and daal your favourite? Just ask. Most evenings we left it up to the kitchen to surprise us, but on request we persuaded the chef to cook us up an authentic Kenyan feast including staple dishes such as ugali (a starchy porridgelike substance), meat stews, sukuma wiki (collard greens cooked with onions and tomatoes), chapattis and a coconut kidney bean soup better known as maharagwe. One day we were whisked off to a prime ‘lion viewing’ spot in the bush, where we were surprised by an al fresco picnic that could’ve been plucked right out of the set of Out of Africa. Everything about Segera is on point; they combine luxury with rustic charm, provide a 24-hour concierge service, unlimited game drives, your own driver and allocated waiter, and a type of hospitality you’d expect to find at a friend’s home. To top our stay at Segera off, as we were leaving the resort, our driver David suddenly stopped the car, pointed quietly, and whispered, “Chui”. We glanced in the direction of his finger, and to our amazement there was a Chui (Swahili for leopard) standing by a fence, looking at us. Within seconds it turned away and raced off. But that didn’t matter, we had seen it, and it was wonderful.

ANGAMA MARA

etting from northern to southern Kenya, we saw an extraordinary change in landscape and animals. From the seared grasslands in Laikipia Plateau to the verdant planes of the Masai Mara, we were onto the next chapter of our African adventure. As the plane glided into land, we spotted a clan of hyenas near the runway, countless

harems of zebra, towers of giraffes and herds of elephant grazing nearby amidst the trees. Life was everywhere. Which meant we were in for a lot of lion sightings. Wilson, our friendly, talkative driver, picked us up and whisked us off to the camp. Comprised of 30 luxury tents, split in half across two camps and overlooking the vast Masai Mara, the camp is on the Oloololo escarpment, on the edge of the Rift Valley. The main restaurant/ reception is an open wooden decked space, adorned with Moschino-style rocking chairs and an vista that's indescribably beautiful. The food is good, but the best dinner was had under a canopy of trees, lit with lanterns, where they cooked up a feast of meat and delicious salads. Unlike Segera, Angama is more about a shared experience. There are communal dining areas where you can socialise with other guests or chat over a bonfire and a cocktail. The drives are different too – there are park fees, and

55 B&C_September_Kenya.indd 55

was the final animal, the one to complete our sighting of the Big Five, and the one we thought least likely to see. But as if by magic, to complete the trip of a lifetime, as we were on our final game drive, there it was, a black rhino with her baby plodding across the bush. And to top it off, not one 4x4 (other than ours) in sight. It was the most spectacular end to the most incredible trip, and has given me my very own story to treasure for the rest of my life. u  Economy return flights from London Heathrow to Nairobi with Kenya Airways (kenya-airways.com / 020 8283 1818) start from £722.45 including taxes. TRAVEL / UK GETAWAY STAY

T

he Royal Mile is one of the most beautiful places to stay in Edinburgh. With Arthur’s Seat at one end and Edinburgh Castle at the other, the five-star G&V hotel is rather conveniently located between the two. Recently transformed by Scotland’s top artists – including fashion designer Judy R Clark and painter Hatti Pattisson – the hotel is both unique and stylish. While Clark’s Regal Suite is a nod to the hotel’s heritage with reupholstered Victorian furniture in rich velvets, Pattinson’s Garden Paradise is bright with florals and foliage. The distinctive, playful styles give the old hotel a modern edge so for comfort and ease, it doesn’t get much better than this. 

aving hiked to the top of Arthur’s Seat and walked the city’s cobbled streets all day, we took things slower in the evening with a five course cocktail menu at The Balmoral. Taking place in the hotel’s bar, the menu is made to be taken slowly, with each course designed to complement the one before it. The first is a palate-cleansing concoction of chartreuse, lemon, cranberry and absinthe. Citrusy and strong, the drink fully prepares us for what is to come: the stages fruity, fizzy, tropical, creamy and, finally, the chocolatey sixth course. With a choice of two drinks at each stage there is likely to be a drink you want at each level (but if not you are able to substitute it for an old favourite). Each drink comes fully explained by the knowledgeable mixologist so this is a sophisticated way to get piddled. 

astle Terrace Restaurant embodies true fine dining. Opened by the team behind Michelinstarred The Kitchin, the menu is designed by Edinburgh-born Dominic Jack. With French influences and Scottish produce, the menu is experimental and sees produce combined with unexpected herbs and spices. A great example of this is the delicately balanced scallop starter, which sees the meaty fish come served with a light curry sauce. This dish demonstrated the talent of The Castle’s chefs instantly. The beef main was Thai-inspired and included a parcel of ravioli filled with a soy-ponzu concoction. Piercing this over the tender stem broccoli, chilli and garlic made this a memorable meal.  33-35 Castle Terrace, EH1; castleterracerestaurant.com

ith the impending cold weather and the reality of extortionate bills on the horizon, there is no better time to find an alternative and effective way to heat the home. Thick winter knits and hearty food may warm a little, but nothing beats a roaring fire on a chilly winter night. Luxury fireplace dealers Grate Expectations know a thing or two about heating the home – and they source some of the best fireplace and stoves from producers around the world. One of the most successful fireplace producers in the world, Dru, hails from the Netherlands and has been leading the way in the market since 1754. New to Drus’ designer portfolio is the Maestro Eco Wave range of contemporary balanced flue gas fires. Unlike the Metro fires, the Maestro has more height and can display big realistic logs and higher flames that wrap around them. The fire also has an efficiency rating of 84%, making it one of the most proficient and

impressive gas fires on the market. It also has the option of clear view glass to cleverly replicate the appearance of an open-fronted real fire. Dru Maestro gas fires can be installed with a PowerVent® motorised flue system, making them completely flexible to be located almost anywhere in the home. Its impressive Eco Wave function, unique to the designer range fires, has a wifi module option that enables you to communicate with it via an app on your phone or tablet. This allows you to preset the fire's flames and increase its efficiency. Also at Grate Expectations is Spartherm, specialising in creativity, functionality and craftsmanship with an extensive range of robust freestanding stoves, insert and built-in fires. Spartherm designs and manufacture extremely contemporary stoves that are easy to use and highly efficient. The Arte U, Mini and Varia models have the option of a retractable glass door for style and easy loading of your logs. t's been a real pleasure to watch this fledgling London brand take flight over the course of 2016, with mama and founder Louise Shill beginning to corner the market in classic styles. The aim of Young Soles was always to take timeless footwear shapes – the fisherman sandal, the Derby, the desert boot – and reimagine them for the contemporary child, using the best materials and a grown-up's eye for good design to improve upon the (let's be honest) tacky and underperforming stuff so often found in kids' shoe shops. Designed in east London and made with care in Europe, the shoes are hardwearing yet supple, so that they mould to little ones' growing feet. They also feature a stylistic simplicity and attention to detail (even when enlivened by all-over zebra patterns or Libertyprint laces) that ensures they run streets ahead of the competition. In short, we're big fans. And so should you be.

KIDS & EDUCATION / SCHOOL TALK

Mind your grammar Is Theresa May going to lift the ban on new grammar schools? The debate is raging

F

Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e

ew things start an argument quite like the subject of grammar schools. When it was revealed during the summer that the new Prime Minister might lift the 18-year ban on grammars, possibly as early as this month, she was accused by of “opening old wounds” by a Martin Stephen, previously high master of St Paul’s School.

On the one side there are those who think grammar schools are brilliant agents of social mobility, providing bright children with the opportunity to excel, whatever their background. For others they are the opposite, a failed experiment in social selection that merely entrenches advantage and privilege for the few at the expense of the many. Stephen said: “If you condemn 70 per cent of the school populace to sump schools you create a vehicle not for social mobility but rather a mass uprising.” If Theresa May – herself the product of a grammar school – were to lift the ban imposed by Tony Blair nearly two decades ago, it would be a hugely symbolic move for many in the Conservative Party who have campaigned for the return of grammars for years. Grammar schools grew from the 1940s to the 1970s, and by the mid-1960s, 1,300 grammars were educating a quarter of all pupils (and their pupils won half of all Oxbridge places). The best were (and still are) bastions of rigorous academia, where Latin and Greek were learnt as standard and poems learnt by rote. But politics turned against grammars, and in 1976 the Education Act compelled local authorities to introduce comprehensive education. Yet existing grammars still dominate the league tables, often outclassing top private schools, and tiger mothers fight for places with Hunger Games-style ferocity. Yet it is this issue of selection, the

THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY HAS CAMPAIGNED FOR THE RETURN OF GRAMMARS FOR YEARS punishing 11+ entrance exam taken to grab a grammar place, that makes these schools repellent for their opponents. Critics say grammar schools cream off only the brightest (or the most tutored) and to introduce more such schools will only encourage the academic arms race that already blights the private sector, and leaves no room for children from less privileged homes. Evidence collected by the Sutton Trust, a charity that works to improve social mobility through education, found that less than three per cent of grammar school entrants are entitled to free school meals, a marker of social disadvantage – compared with 18 per cent of English children overall.

73 EDUCATION2.indd 73

But for politicians like cabinet ministers David Davis and Liam Fox, the answer to this disparity is to create more grammar schools. They are the founders of pressure group Conservative Voice which wants to see a new grammar school system for the 21st century, and has already drawn up plans for 20 new grammars created initially in deprived areas of Britain to boost “choice, opportunity for all and aspiration”. As David Cameron’s government made it a requirement that all new state schools should be free schools, a type of academy set up by community groups or chains, it is likely that any new grammars would take the form of free schools. But free schools are also non-selective, so entrance tests for grammar free schools would have to change. It is possible that new grammars would follow the model of free schools like the London Academy of Excellence (LAE), a very successful selective sixth-form college in Newham that has already sent eight pupils to Oxford and Cambridge. A Westminster source said: “What they [the government] want is to introduce a LAE, but for 11- to 18-year-olds.” But for many senior educationalists, including outgoing Ofsted inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw, any sort of return to grammar education is not the answer. Many have said that they believe the government should press on with the root and branch reforms of A-levels and GCSEs, instigated by Michael Gove, continue with academisation and widen access to technical training. Tony Little, a former headmaster of Eton, said the debate about expanding the number of grammars was the “wrong one to have” and urged a focus on quality instead. “Beware the nostalgic comfort of a golden age. Held up to the light, most golden ages do not glister, they prove to be made of base metal.” ◆

he major buzzword around Ealing at the moment is Crossrail. Before opening, it has already had a profound positive effect on the area and we expect this to continue. In the 12 months leading up to March 2016, prime west London prices increased by 4.2 per cent, yet Ealing saw a far higher increase than its neighbours with price growth of 6.7 per cent. An area which has not yet received quite the same level of attention as Ealing is Hanwell, the next stop along the Crossrail line, and I expect strong growth here going forward. It’s a lovely area, with the feel of a country village in parts. u

Q&A HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS AREA?

I’ve lived in the Strand on The Green area of Chiswick for five years and worked here for 18 months having come over from Richmond to join Knight Frank. WHAT IS YOUR ETHOS?

I believe its good customer service that sells houses. Being trustworthy and listening to what people want is key and matching them to the right property is what works. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PROPERTIES RIGHT NOW?

Lettings Negotiator

I began my career in banking but had been investing in property since I was 19, so I decided to mix business with pleasure and make property my career, joining Benham and Reeves Residential Lettings. I work closely with investors building their property portfolios. u

When I was younger I spent time travelling and loved meeting fascinating people. I joined Benham and Reeves Residential Lettings in 2006, setting up our Ealing branch in 2012 and our Kew branch this year. I’m lucky my career still involves meeting interesting people. u

I’ve worked for Benham and Reeves Residential Lettings for over 10 years. Living in west London I know the area really well and I enjoy using my local knowledge to find tenants their ideal home. Property is my passion and I love the fact that every day is so different. u

I started out as a landscape gardener but decided it wasn’t for me and moved into property. It was the best decision I’ve ever made. I love my job and am fascinated by how this part of west London is being transformed by luxurious residential developments. u

MARKET PREDICTIONS FOR THE COMING MONTHS?

I’m pleased to say we have a good level of quality houses and apartments on our books and an increase in buyers registering. I think we will have a strong Autumn market. u

IN THEIR OWN

Jonathan Bird HEAD OF LET TINGS

I

REBECCA NOONAN

t would be true to say that heading up the lettings team at Finlay Brewer was not my childhood dream. Like many of my colleagues at Finlay Brewer, I had a reasonably protracted route into the industry that I now call home; starting in publishing, moving into public relations and, for the 12 years before I arrived in Brook Green, pubs. The “pub years” were, to borrow from Mr Dickins, the best of times and the worst of times. Realising my ten-year dream of opening an independent pub was a wonderful feeling and an unforgettable experience, but after several good years, a change in fortune and the unfortunate influence of a no-good, Liverpudlian, business partner left me a short hop, skip and a jump from bankruptcy. The business I truly loved had ultimately led me into a life of renting funded by a career in lettings. Some might consider the move from pub landlord to estate agent as an unusual one, but in reality there are plenty of obvious transferrable skills between the two professions. They both rely on an ability to be

I always recommend that the people who do not know the area try out the local pubs

good with people, to form solid productive relationships in short spaces of time and to ensure that the service you provide is efficient, successful and ultimately rewarding. I think it has helped that I have always secretly harboured an interest in property. I am the friend that, when invited for dinner, always feels the need to find a way to have a wander around the host’s home. In my past, I might have taken criticism for being nosey, but now I know that these solo sorties into the parts of friends’ houses that are not on show, was the beginning of my training in the property market. Brook Green, Brackenbury Village and Shepherds Bush are fantastic areas to work in. They both have a much sought after

sense of community and an interestingly diverse population. As an ex-publican, I always recommend that people who do not know the area try out the local pubs. If you don’t feel a connection with the people inside, it may be that you don’t feel an empathy with the people outside. Fortunately, with the likes of The Havelock, the Bird in Hand and the Anglesey, it’s been a successful way to attract tenants and keep the pubs busy. A good all round result! The result of the recent EU Referendum has certainly had a noticeable effect on the sales market in London. However, if you look at the overall industry as a seesaw with the sales end having a (temporary) lull, we expect the lettings side of the business to keep nudging skywards, consolidating a good summer with a strong end to the year. In most cases, we are not in the business of helping our applicants with their long term dreams, but in the current climate, we might just be the ones most likely to be found celebrating in the pub after work. And that’s not too shabby a situation in which to find oneself in at the moment! u

SCHOOLS

Cost of getting into six of the best

O

n the face of it parents in London’s central boroughs should have a wide choice of state secondary schools to send their children to – there are 112 secondary schools for them to choose from. But of these only 23 are 'Outstanding' and 20 'Good', so competition is white hot for these better establishments and consequently only two thirds of parents get their first choice. To try and allay furious parents and balance the system, most schools work hard to filter applications by prioritising some children over others. These often include those with disabilities, particular religions (for faith schools), academic ability and the most controversial one… proximity to the school. But not all do this. For example, The Grey Coat Hospital in Pimlico where Michael Gove famously sent his daughter in 2014, does not have a catchment area. Parents who want to send their children to an 'Outstanding' state school in central London may have one choice left – to move close to their target school and hope to fall within its catchment area, a trend that has made homes within these areas 25% more expensive, according to Savills. So how much might these homes cost? Here we look at six of central London’s 'Outstanding' schools to look at the property markets their catchment areas. u

PROPERTY AROUND THE SCHOOLS:

Pimlico Academy has a wide catchment area which is approximately a three mile circle around the school, but the schools’ own pupil heat map reveals that most come from Pimlico and Vauxhall. Despite being in the heart of London, it’s largely a house market ranging from £700,000 for a post-war three bedroom terraced house between Kennington and Vauxhall to around £4.5 million for a period two bedroom terrace near Sloane Square. But prices quickly escalate to tens of millions for the larger houses off Eaton Terrace.

PROPERTY AROUND THE SCHOOLS:

This is an expensive catchment to join. Prices start at £600,000 for a two-bedroom flat to £5 million for a luxury penthouse. But the median price is around £1.5 million for a two bed example.
