s it safe yet? Can we do it? Can we finally, unashamedly blast the Christmas tunes, don the embarrassing jumpers and start eating nothing but mince pies slathered in brandy butter? Yes. Yes we can. December is finally here, meaning that my colleagues can no longer prevent my Christmas cheer from spilling out and with that in mind, welcome to our festive issue. This month we have put together gift guides for every section ranging from the very best children’s gifts on page 97 to interiors gifts for keen homemakers on page 49. But before Christmas comes advent; beauty addicts can count down with fabulous calendars on page 39 while those who prefer something sweet in the mornings can find edible options on page 77. If you have a green thumb and fancy a homemade Christmas this year, turn to page 56 for our wreath-making guide from letterbox florists Bloom & Wild. On a slightly sadder note, this will be my last issue of Absolutely as editor. I have had a wonderful three and a half years working on this wonderful magazine and perhaps, every so often, brightening up your day. And with that, I wish you a very merry Christmas and a an auspicious and happy New Year. Bon Chance! u

THE NUTCRACKER 14 D ec em b er – 7 Jan uary Coli seum

n a sparkling Christmas Eve in a frost-dusted Edwardian London, Clara and her enchanted Nutcracker doll discover a magical world where she battles with the Mouse King and meets a handsome stranger. As the air grows colder, Clara and her valiant Nutcracker take a hot air balloon ride across London to the glistening Land of Snow where her adventure really begins. In a world of Edwardian elegance, Nutcracker brings to life the popular Tchaikovsky score featuring the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Waltz of the Flowers. Based on a concept by Toer van Schayk and Wayne Eagling, Nutcracker has choreography by Wayne Eagling and music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, performed live by the English National Ballet Philharmonic, with design by Peter Farmer and lighting by David Richardson.  ballet.org.uk

Midcentury Matter Orla Kiely, queen of the nostalgic print, introduces her whimsical new fashion collection, L’Orla Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e

PENDLE HARTE: Tell us about L’Orla. What inspired it? ORLA KIELY: L’Orla is a way of developing ideas that otherwise might be too whimsical for our mainline collection. It was inspired initially as a creative collaboration between our long time stylist and Violet magazine editor Leith Clark and myself. When it comes to fashion, we are kindred spirits as we both have a love for all things 60s and 70s. PH: Which are your favourite pieces from the L’Orla collection? OK: That is a tricky question, as I love them all for different reasons, but I especially love our floral embroideries developed with expert weavers. The results are incredibly beautiful and the dresses are magic. The lace knits are also very pretty. It is hard to choose. PH: How does the second collection build on the first? OK: For the L’Orla collection this season we have been inspired by 70s Laura Ashley, the effortless romantic spirit of Celia Birtwell and classic American brand Gunne Sax. Our L’Orla ladies are Shelley Duvall, one of the quintessential 70s beauties, and Mary Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie, who was light years ahead in her layering and style. With these inspirations we have designed

our most feminine collection to date, with special floral embroideries on silk organza dresses and printed ditzy florals on Italian baby corduroy dungarees. Lurex knit scallop-patterned necklines combined with cashmere sweaters. Playing with contrasting prints make for a modern day romantic spirit. PH: You have been involved in lots of collaborations. Are there any more to come? OK: We have been incredibly lucky to work with some great partners on different projects. We are continually developing something special.

PH: You’re known as much for your homewares as your fashion. Which is closer to your heart? OK: Orla Kiely – the company – developed from a passion for mid-century design and print. This has informed all aspects of our product, from the ready-towear collections, fragrance, beauty, handbags, watches, jewellery, homewares, wallpapers and more. My style has always remained clean, simple, measured, bold and brave, evolving each year with new designs and distinctive prints. It's about capturing a new spirit each season, which speaks to women everywhere. For me, it is this complete picture we create that I love, the way our customer lives her life, through our love of colour and pattern, we reinvent the every day, and make it a little more special. PH: You have spoken out against consumer excess. Do you think we should all stop shopping? OK: No, we should not stop shopping but we should definitely be more selective and considered when buying something. It should be functional and beautiful, which I always keepO in mind when designing a product. PH: You have previously mentioned your childhood kitchen as an inspiration. What was it like?

SHELLEY DUVALL: 'ONE OF THE QUINTESSENTIAL 70S BEAUTIES'

My inspirations will always be FIRMLY BASED IN THE 50s, 60s & 70s PH: What other interiors do you admire? OK: I am devoted to beautiful mid-century interiors and wrote a book dedicated to the subject, called Home. My favourite houses are featured, such as Seigel House in Nottingham, Scheer House, Vila Bendvold and Brabrand House in Denmark are quite remarkable in their design and simplicity. PH: As a mother, how do you find time to combine your work and home life? OK: My two sons are young men now and studying at university, but while they were growing up, it was a tricky balance. Having the right support made things much easier. It was a team effort, always a joy. PH: Childrenswear seems to be missing from your collections. Are there any plans for that? OK: You never know what might be around the corner!

ORLA KIELY

OK: Growing up in Ireland in the 1970s had a great influence on my creative vision. My 1950s modernist family home, my mother’s great style, the area we lived in Dublin, just two minutes from the beach, close to the greenest fields and the mountains too. All this natural beauty and modernist style influenced my taste for colour and design. PH: There’s a lot of nostalgia in your designs. Why is that? OK: My inspirations will always be firmly based in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Those were times of great films, innovative design in all fields and, of course, the unforgettable music that remains so influential to this day.

'MARY INGALLS FROM LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE WAS LIGHT YEARS AHEAD IN HER LAYERING AND STYLE'

19 NH_Nov16_ORLA KIELY.indd 19

PH: Can you tell us about the house you live in? Is it filled with your own designs? OK: I live in south London with my husband and my two dogs Olive and Ivy, my home has a very mid-century aesthetic. I have combined vintage furniture from fairs with products we have made. Our wallpaper prints, cushions and a special mohair blanket are to be found in the living room. In the kitchen our tableware adds something special at dinner times, and our towels in the bathrooms add some extra colour and pattern to everyday life. u

CHRISTMAS AT KEW As twilight falls, the magic begins…

I

t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas when the trees, temples and glasshouses of Kew are playfully lit and all aglow. There’s something for everyone at this festive time of year as the one mile sparkling path winds its way through the world-famous gardens in a magical after dark experience. Now in its fourth year, our new 2016 winter trail is a botanical wonderland inspired by the garden itself. Enter between two giant Christmas trees festooned with ribbon and wander beneath unique tree canopies drenched in seasonal colour. Follow the path between a carpet of light gently swaying like blossom and stop for a moment of reflection at the scented Fire Garden. Continue towards glittering trees dripping with giant crystals and gaze at colour-changing reeds rising high into the night sky. Just ahead glimpse the Tunnel of Lights, this year animated by over 60,000 lights.

At the time, Clarendon Cross was still home to a post office and a newsagent and Sam Robinson had recently graduated from Saint Martins and launched her own (short-lived) bag brand. The boutique has been known for spotting emerging talent and launching small brands ever since, particularly fashion brand Dosa and its simple, timeless pieces. The Cross was soon stocking stylish childrenswear and toys as well as quirky homewares; it remains one of London's best destination boutiques. Ten Dental Clapham

Wo r d s e ly s i a ag n e w

I

f you want a whiter smile without undergoing a cosmetic procedure or trialling the countless whitening products on the shelves, Ten Dental is your go-to SW London surgery. Turning your teeth into pearly whites can be quite bewildering with an endless list of products and cosmetic options, and it seems difficult to find the right one in terms of results, ease, price and sensitivity. From the front of house staff to the hygienists and surgeons, Ten Dental will guide you every step of the way – finding the perfect treatment for first-class results. It’s a state of the art clinic with modern touches while remaining clean and professional. The staff are welcoming from the first phone call and I don’t feel the usual dentist dread. I arrive at the Clapham branch for a consultation with Dr Martin Wanendeya. He runs me through the process and tells me about the condition of my teeth and gums. Following an assessment, I am recommended a hygienist session in order to achieve the best possible results. After a successful cleanse, which brings visibly brighter results, I’m ready for my moulds. The second visit includes discussing the product and shaping the moulds for my personalised Enlighten pack. Enlighten is a whitening system that combines at-home whitening and in-surgery consultations. In under two weeks, the whitening pack has arrived and I check-in at the surgery for a fitting and introduction session. Dr Wanendeya talks me through the steps to shiny white teeth. The Enlighten treatment means wearing clear moulds filled with whitening gel overnight for two weeks. The gel is strengthened after the first week, encouraging brighter results as the treatment is prolonged. I notice the whitening after just two days; and without a doubt my teeth are brighter, whiter and healthier without an unnatural neon glow. ◆

Mother of

INVENTION Marcel Wanders has a long tradition of designing for Alessi but his new Circus collection is his best yet. Here he discusses art, design and functionality with Absolutely Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e

HOMES & INTERIORS / PROFILE

Y

ou can tell that Marcel Wanders is an internationally famed designer just by looking at him. He cuts an impressive presence, taller than everyone else in the room, with flamboyant grey hair and a quick, authoritative manner. He has a Northern European philosophical slant to his conversation, which leads him to answer questions in ways that I’m not quite expecting. We are at Harrods, here to discuss his ongoing collaboration with Italian design house Alessi and the newly launched Circus collection, about which he is very excited. Wanders’ relationship with Alessi goes back a long way and takes in about 160 pieces over the last eight years at the higher quality end of the range, the ceramic and stainless steel end, not the bright plastic selection. ‘Alessi

Functionality is

IMPORTANT FOR THINGS we don’t care about, like VACUUM CLEANERS has a wonderful heritage,’ he asserts. ‘Throughout the 80s and the 90s you could walk into an Alessi store, pick something blind, take it to a wedding and everybody would be happy.’ The collaborative nature of their relationship is integral. ‘Design companies don’t tell designers what to do – they listen to designers. Of course it’s a collaboration, and there’s a lot of talking, but in the end we make what we want to make. If the designer is the mother and the company is the father, well, you want to make babies that the father recognises once they’re there, right? Because then the father will take better care of them. It’s all connected, so we designers try to find fathers who are worthwhile.’ It’s an undeniably compelling analogy. Anyway, Wanders was always certain that in working with Alessi and its impressive rosta of collaborators, he wanted to be special. ‘I never wanted to be designer number 744 who does an egg cup,’ he asserts. Who wouldn’t want better things for their babies?

The new collection, Circus, is a success he says because even though neither he nor Alessi has ever done anything similar, it’s still immediately identifiable as a collaboration between them. ‘We have really found an area where both can give what they have to give,’ he says. The circus theme, although it could easily have arisen from Alessi’s tradition of characters and quirky figures, comes instead from Wanders’ newly developed (though secret) method of combining colour with stainless steel. They worked on the new technology first and once they’d perfected it, set about thinking of something to use it for. ‘So we were looking for something that would allow the combination of bright colour with steel and we thought of the circus, with all the nostalgia, the characters and the misfits.

HOMES & INTERIORS / PROFILE ‘They never did something like this. We never did something like this. But when you put it out there you can tell very clearly that it’s us.’ The range comprises 29 pieces of tableware, including trays, bowls, an ice bucket, a wine cooler and various containers, as well as a limited edition collection of five curiosities: a jester corkscrew, a strongman nutcracker, a ballerina music box, a ringmaster bell and a candyman sweet dispenser, each of them sold in numbered editions of 999. Which one is Wanders’ favourite? It’s not a question he takes favourably to. ‘Favourites are complicated. It’s like asking which is my favourite child. Even if you know you won’t tell, right?’ But today, this morning, he’s preferring the ballerina, which he’s just chosen as a gift for a friend’s baby. ‘I see that girl in 20 years in her school dorm with that thing next to her.’ The ballerina is a music box and the jester is a corkscrew – and I am expecting him to enthuse about the functionality of his pieces. But on the contrary, he’s quite dismissive about functionality altogether and becomes quite animated. ‘It’s a very overqualified idea. To explain design with functional criteria is ridiculous. Our functionality is not extremely relevant to the piece, which for a lot of designers is not something they would want to admit. Functionality is important for things we don’t care about, like vacuum cleaners. Nobody even wants a vacuum cleaner, they just want a clean house. If you make a vacuum cleaner and it doesn’t work then that’s terrible because functionality is the foundation – but having a foundation doesn’t make a thing good. It’s not enough.

Maybe all that BODY OF WORK is not a perfect mirror of WHO I AM AS A PERSON

There are houses that need foundations, but dream castles in the air that can do without them.’ His views on the relationship between art and design are similarly robust. ‘Art affects a few people in a very deep way, design a lot of people in a light way,’ he says. As both an artist and a designer, the two worlds are very clearly separate for him. ‘The message of an artwork is different from the message of a design piece. It makes a different connection to the world. In design, my message is about my trust in the world, it’s about giving, sharing, community. But having done that for 25 years, I started to see that maybe all that body of work is not a perfect mirror of who I am as a person and I wanted to express different ideas. My fears, my anger, my disappointment in myself and others. That started a different, more intimate conversation about things I don’t want on the back of a cornflakes packet.’ In essence, design is cheerful while art is not. It’s a clear definition. The Alessi spokesperson at his side interjects to point out that the limited edition pieces in the Circus collection are also art pieces, but Wanders won’t have it. ‘It’s very easy to say that if we make a chair in a lower quantity and with more careful production then it’s art, but it’s not. The things I make which I call art have a very different meaning and importance. They have something different to say.’ If Wanders is the mother of his works, he’s definitely a Tiger Mother, ambitious, strong and fierce. And his future projects? ‘I’d love to do an opera at the Met,’ he says. Doesn’t the Tiger Mother always achieve her aim? ◆ alessi.com/circus

e love making Christmas accessories for the home, so we created a wreath that fits through the letterbox and is easily assembled in minutes – as it’s already decorated for you! If, however, you want to make your own wreath at home, the first step is to find components that are local and will last. Pine cones, dried fruit and winter blooms are our favourites, so we’ve got birch branches, skimmia berries and leaves as well as pine cones. Cinnamon sticks and dried flowers work well too, depending on the decor of your home.

Most developers want to create a house with wide market appeal for an easy sale, but these owners did not want to cut any corners and all the detailing had to reflect this. They were not afraid to keep the lines crisp, clean and completely modern. The property sold for well over the asking price.

he owners are live-in developers, buying properties, and project managing the build themselves while the reconstruction process goes on. They bought a very rundown 1960s brick house, which had been wedged into a Second World War bombsite, and planned to knock it down to build a bold, modernist house from scratch. Once we had handed over our plans, they were off. The brief presented us with a problem because the planning department wanted a house in keeping with the rest of the street; Clarendon Road in Notting Hill is made up of predominantly Victorian stucco houses. After careful negotiation we persuaded the council that it would be impossible to replicate a Victorian house in such a narrow space but that a dramatic modern Extract taken from Thinking & Living house would be a great Like an Architect improvement on the Clearview Books, ÂŁ30 previous 1960s build. ď ľ michaelisboyd.com

STOVE TALK Six reasons why installing a wood-burning stove will improve your life Words

PENDLE HARTE

01 EFFICIENCY A stove is vastly more efficient than an open fire. There’s less heat loss, so you get more heat for less wood. You can reduce your gas bill and turn the thermostat down.

02 COSINESS It’s emotional. Stoves create instant cosiness – they look good and improve everybody’s mood.

03 BACK TO BASIC S ‘There’s something primal about burning logs,’ says Marcus Hodgetts of Stoake (stoake.co.uk), a business that is seeing a huge rise in the number of Londoners installing wood burners. Making fire is a fundamental human skill; we live in a hard environment and can long for something more basic. Some people go a step further and buy an axe.

04 ENVIRONMENTAL APPEAL You can even power your whole house with a boiler stove and a multiple energy system that includes solar power. You’ll need a small plant room to run your central heating and hot water in an environmentally friendly way.

05 ANY THING’S POSSIBLE Wood burning stoves can be installed in almost any house. No chimney breast? No problem. You can have an exposed flue. Existing chimneys will probably need to be lined; installation usually takes a day.

06 CHRISTMAS What could be more Christmassy than a stove gently crackling, turkey cooking, presents waiting to be unwrapped? Nothing is more Christmassy than that.

Online Decorating Introducing Aneeqa Khan, the entrepreneur behind eporta, the Airbnb of the interiors world Wo r d s H a n n a h H o p k i n s

here is simply too much choice. The interiors industry is swamped with so many options that anyone choosing anything from a tap to a shelving system is hard-pressed to know where to start. But instead of being inundated by the array of online interiors shops at our disposal, savvy homeowners are bookmarking eporta. A site for interiors professionals, it allows you to discover and buy pieces from all over the world in one place, from unknown craftspeople to established luxury brands. Known as the Airbnb of the interiors market, the online portal connects furniture and product designers with potential buyers such as retailers, architects and interior designers. It combines a slick catalogue and a messaging service through which buyers and sellers can hook up, tailor orders

and negotiate discounts. Like Airbnb, the company takes a cut of the deal price agreed by the two sides of the transaction. The brainchild of Aneeqa Khan, previously head of strategy at Zoopla, the brand was born when she bought a place in Brixton and struggled to find furniture to fill it. “I was shocked at how difficult it was to access beautiful and original products despite the huge number of fantastic brands around the world”, she says. “Digging deeper, I realised that it wasn’t just a case of products being hard to find for consumers, and actually the real issue in the industry was that professional buyers needed an online platform to help them discover and manage trade relationships in one place.” In a global industry where hundreds of thousands of brands are dotted around the world, eporta simplifies the buying process and fast-tracks relationship building by making it easy to work directly with suppli-

BESPOKE CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN INSTALLATION BY MCCARRON & CO

Mark Brook, creative director of McCarron & Co, reveals some trade secrets Wo r d s p e a r l b oy d

PEARL BOYD: What is it that makes McCarron & Co such a success? MARK BROOK: In a word: flexibilty. McCarron & Co is made up of a pool of amazing creative talent, drawn from the UK’s forefront kitchen manufacturing establishments. Across the board we have a real wealth of specialist knowledge. This enables us to meet the most exacting client briefs. A large percentage of our business comes from the interior design and architecture world and that is where the flexibility really makes the difference. These professionals often have a house style or a unique scheme designed solely for an individual project. Our strength is the flexibility to translate their ideas into beautifully considered projects.

CREATIVE DIRECTOR MARK BROOK

PD: What kind of projects do you undertake? MB: In our infancy we predominantly specialised in bespoke kitchens / media rooms / bedrooms and bathrooms – really, any spaces that require functional and aesthetically driven solutions. However, we now get more involved with whole house projects which span almost every room in the house, including libraries, flower rooms, wine rooms and mud rooms. We have even worked on a dog grooming room with underfloor heating and a foot bath for muddy paws. PD: What is your background? MB: My whole career has revolved around the kitchen industry, starting out in the commercial kitchen sector, designing huge kitchens in the hotel and restaurant world. That was a great learning curve for accurate site surveys way before the advent of laser measuring tools. Moving over to residential kitchens was a natural progression, and creatively a lot more rewarding. I cut my teeth managing kitchen showrooms for Harrods, Mark Wilkinson and Smallbone of Devizes before becoming one of the co-owners here at McCarron & Co. PD: Where do you start when designing a bespoke project? MB: The first step will often be a detailed brief-taking meeting with the client or

Nobody wants to go to a FRIEND’S DINNER PARTY & see the EXACT SAME KITCHEN

interior designer/architect to get an in-depth understanding of their vision and what they would like to achieve. In order to successfully interpret the needs of the client, we listen carefully and ask lots of questions, taking into account their lifestyle and any factors which may influence the design. knowledge, having worked predominantly for Mark Wilkinson Furniture and Smallbone of Devizes in previous years. What really drives them now is the number of unique projects we undertake, using skills such as veneering and marquetry and the making of beautiful furniture using wood with accent materials like fabrics and metals. Likewise, with the polishing of the furniture we make use of different sheens and gloss levels that when applied to a natural or stained timber can produce a finished piece that sits perfectly in its final surroundings. PD: And what is your own house like? MB: I live in a unique former artist's studio in the heart of Notting Hill. It is flooded with natural daylight through huge windows, 3.5 metre ceilings, lots of texture, accent colours and bold overscale art and sculpture. Naturally it has a beautiful hand-made kitchen. magazines and online images can often be a great starting point to provide us with inspiration and an understanding of the client's likes and style. From this point onwards, we can begin to narrow down the best materials, finishes and functionality to suit the specific needs and ensure that the client's vision is realised by our craftsmen. PD: What characterises a modern, high-specification kitchen? MB: For us, we believe that it is the execution of the installation with contemporary style furniture which truly sets it apart. For example, shadow gaps and rebates should sit perfectly – every detail lining through with no tolerance for imperfections.

We are also seeing a growing desire to be unique in luxury kitchen design – oneoff pieces and bespoke finishes are crucial to the project. No one wants to go to a friend’s dinner party and see the exact same kitchen. Co-ordinated finishes of taps, sinks and handles are another growing trend that we are seeing a rise in demand for – we’ve done a number of gold plated and copper taps of late. The displays in both our Chelsea and Notting Hill showrooms are great examples of this. PD: What happens in your workshop in Wiltshire? MB: Much the same as our designers, the majority of our craftsmen joined McCarron & Co with a wealth of kitchen

71 NH_Nov16_MCCARRON.indd 71

PD: Do you improve your own space regularly? MB: I am very fortunate to own property in Portobello, Paris and Puglia (we refer to them as 'the three Ps') so there is always scope for tweaking different rooms. Our Italian garden currently has priority which is good exercise and less expensive than re-decorating. u

FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEW

TO SET THE

scene: think fresh fish AND THE

TRANQUILITY of life by the OCEAN

Venturin

London’s first Croatian concept restaurant Wo r d s E ly s i a Ag n e w

A

s Croatia grows as a luxury tourist spot, it’s surprising to find the lack of venues in London where we can celebrate the delicious food that draws us to the beautiful country – until now. Venturin is London’s very first authentic Dalmatian pop-up restaurant. It’s a place that brings those sunshine experiences to life, bringing guests in from the dark, cold nights and whisking them away to a pleasant summer evening on the Croatian coastline. To set the scene: think fresh fish and the tranquility of a life by the ocean. Not just a haven of Croatian food, Venturin takes all of the senses into consideration. The look, smells, sounds and overall feel of the place is like stepping back in time to your summer holiday – a seemingly distant memory of fun,

food and freedom. The name comes from a long forgotten word used in Dalmatia by local fishermen, in reference to night fishing. It means: 'the last dark before the dawn'. The interiors are cosy and chic, finished with effortless stone walls, bleached wood, baskets hanging from the ceiling and flickering candles in every nook and cranny. Venturin is a creative Croatian concept and culinary experience offering both an a la carte menu and a five-course set dinner. It's a gastronomical journey of the flavours that epitomize this spectacular country. With a glass of prosecco on arrival, we tuck into the Venturin Platter: a selection of fish pate, roquet, goats cheese and almond pesto, sea bass carpaccio covered in Croatian olive oil, anchovies and smoked tuna covered with Dalmatian herbs. It’s the perfect sharing plate, embodying everything we love about fresh, summer seafood;

79 B&C_Dec16_UK_foodreview.indd 79

whether you’ve experienced Croatia first hand or not. If you have, it will take you back to a happy memory; If you haven’t, you’ll be desperate to try out the real thing. Next up is the summer tomato soup, prepared with fresh mint and king prawns and served up in a jam jar with a spicy kick from the herbs and spices. The third dish, buzara, is one of the most traditional Dalmatian dishes – mussels and shrimps prepared in garlic, parsley and tomato sauce. The main event is the gregada; another traditional dish combining onions, white wine, potato and fish. A delicate stew filled with flavours and fresh ingredients. Something sweet (and healthy) to finish: a carrot and chocolate orange cake combo. It’s gluten, sugar and lactose free and is absolutely delicious. The perfect finish to a culinary journey – capturing a true essence of Croatia. If you’ve visited the Mediterranean paradise that is Croatia, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to the most delicious moment of your trip. If you haven’t, Venturin will have you wanting to seek out something more – whether that is booking up your next foodie feast or searching for your next summer holiday. Here’s to hoping this pop-up sticks around in Battersea. u

t’s almost impossible to describe how bizarre a cruise around the

archipelago of Galápagos really is. Unlike a jungle safari or rainforest trek, the animals here are like actors, ready and waiting for their audience to arrive. Step off the speedboat onto one of these deserted islands, and within seconds you’re standing in between a sea lion and marine iguana, neither of them at all affected by the dozens of cameras pointed in their direction. With less than 250,000 people visiting the archipelago each year, this is the trip of a lifetime and it doesn’t disappoint with impossibly white sands, turquoise seas and black lava rock setting the scene for even more incredible animals. With many islands uninhabited by humans, it’s easy to believe you’re the first to walk the unspoiled land and discover what Metropolitan Touring like to call the Galapagos Big 15 (see sidebar). As the original inspiration behind Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, explained in revolutionary work The Origin of Species, the volcanic islands are a constant source of mystery and

intrigue for naturalists and tourists alike. As a result, days spent aboard the Santa Cruz II ship start early with a 7am wake up call Ω unheard of while on holiday Ω but setting an earlier alarm to watch the giant sun rise up from the sea is a good idea. While the landscape is beautiful it’s the wildlife people come to see. While some of the animals are endemic to a particular island Ω such as the world’s only flightless cormorant that can only be found on Fernandina and Isabela Ω sea lions in Galapagos are so common the locals calls them dogs. Swimming with the adults and their pups around Santa Fé, however, is something I’ll never forget. Resurfacing from pacific, I couldn’t wipe the smile from my face - until I looked back down. There, right below me, were two white-tipped sharks. Even though they’re completely harmless, their jawslike silhouette still took my breath away. Thankfully for those who can’t bare the thought of swimming in the depths of the ocean, the Santa Cruz II has its own glass bottom boat so no one misses out. Back on land, the flat places of Española are particularly special. As

the sole breeding ground for the entire population of the world’s waved albatross we stumbled across three of the giant birds performing their mating dance. Famed for their hilarious drunken waddle and intricate mating ritual, we watched on as we the male clacked beaks with both females; evidently the albatross men are just as indecisive as their human counterparts. The views found at Española are also the best with black lava rock and jagged cliffs creating a prehistoric landscape like nothing else. No sooner than we sat down on the rocks, a blowhole erupted in front of us; it seems there is no end to the wonders of Galápagos.

THE GALAPAGOS 15 Ecuadorian food highlights include lapingacho (fried potato cakes made with quesillo cheese, cooked on the griddle till golden, and served with chorizo and avocado). These are so good we’d rush to breakfast in hope that they were waiting but alas, they were a one-time thing. For lunch, the hearty locro soup is must-eat national dish. The warming and delicious potato stew is a classic corn, bean and potato soup that you top with avocado, cilantro and cancha corn nuts. To experience all Ecuador and the Galápagos have to offer, you logistically need nine days. We flew in to Quito

Step into CHARLES DARWIN’S SHOES and EXPERIENCE it all as he found it in 1535 and stayed in the beautiful 5* boutique hotel Casa Gangotena for two nights. Overlooking the Plaza San Francisco in the Historic Center, the mansion begins to feel like an extremely lovely second home. From here we flew to Baltra airport before boarding the Santa Cruz II. After four nights out at sea, we arrived at the Finch Bay Hotel which was a welcome return to dry land. This chic ecolodge is set on the beachfront of Puerto Ayora and has the most incredible pool so we made the most of the opportunity to relax and happily sat poolside with a mojito in hand. This is the way to travel for sure. While there’s no denying the entire trip was luxurious Ω with giant beds, wifi and a seemingly endless supply of pisco throughout Ω those onboard the Santa Cruz II still made it feel like we were one of the first to visit the archipelago. After all, isn’t that the point? To step into Charles Darwin’s shoes and experience it all as he found it in 1535. u

TRAVEL / UK GETAWAY THE COTTAGE

O

ur home for the weekend is Newmarket, a cosy cottage sleeping eight with two double en suites and two twin en suite bedrooms. This charming hideaway encompasses everything we know and love about the English countryside Ω it's elegant, yet incredibly homely throughout. It’s a country-chic escape, idyllic inside and out, and is perfect for a family getaway. Once a Victorian stable yard and the outbuilding of Bruern Abbey, Newmarket is traditional and country-esque, with a quintessentially British feel. The pastel backdrop is adorned with antiques and floral fabrics, making each room unique from the other. Bruern is in the heart of the Cotswolds with beautiful surrounding villages on its doorstep, but as night draws in we don’t feel guilty for relaxing by the fire with a bottle of wine. It's period character, quaint decor and handmade furnishings make this country cottage a home away from home.

n the edge of the New Forest National Park stands Peppa Pig World: a theme park within a theme park (it’s hosted by Paulton’s Family Park) dedicated to every toddler’s favourite wholesome hog. Rides and attractions will be semi-familiar to anyone who’s ever watched an epsiode or a hundred of the Peppa Pig TV show, with names like George’s Dinosaur Adventure, the Windy Castle Ride and Peppa Pig’s Balloon. You can even play at jumping in muddy puddles, meet Mummy and Daddy Pig and visit Grandma and Grandpa Pig’s house – and of course, there’s a toy shop full of Peppa goodies too. All told, it’s a sweet and innocent way to spend a day and kids will lap it up; more importantly, it’s hardly a couple of hours’ drive from London. And if you’re not too tired out by all that pigginess? You could always take a walk in the New Forest – you might spot some real porkers snuffling about. Sow amazing. 

he Independent Schools Show is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. That’s ten years of helping thousands of parents find the right school for their child. Come and meet key admissions staff and receive advice on fundamental questions such as how to navigate the London system, when to start tuition, how to win a scholarship, what the options are for children with special educational needs, and whether or not boarding school is the answer. There is also the chance to attend a number of talks at the renowned Education Theatre, where the UK’s top heads and brightest thinkers will address some of the most important issues in schools right now. And it’s a fun day out for the family, with two great cafes from Muriel’s Kitchen, a free crèche, and Battersea Park to play in. With so much in one place, there is no better way to plan for your child’s future.

hen Crown Princess MarieChantal of Greece designs childrenswear, she is building on personal experience. All those lovely smocked dresses, Peter Pan collars, knickerbockers and tank tops hark back to her own childhood in Hong Kong, where her mother would dress little Marie-Chantal and her two sisters in precious little outfits. ‘My mother, being South American, paid particular attention to how we were dressed,’ she explains. Born in London, bred in Hong Kong, educated in Switzerland and married to a Greek prince, Marie-Chantal embodies the international jet set. Her father is billionaire American businessman Robert Warren Miller, who made his fortune with the Duty Free Shops, and her sisters are married into (and divorced from) the Getty and Von Furstenberg families. With five children and an exclusive childrenswear label in her own name, Marie-Chantal is the ultimate working mother, albeit probably being spared most of the usual associated drudgery by virtue of all of the above.

I always go back to my

CHILDHOOD & TRY & BRING in some element of HOW MY SISTERS &

I were dressed

We’re here to talk about her newest collection, not for the Marie-Chantal label but for M&S, with whom she is collaborating to launch a collection of clothes for newborns and tots up to the age of five. It’s a departure for M&S in that it’s slightly more expensive than most of the retailer’s offerings, and a departure for Marie-Chantal in that it’s vastly cheaper than her usual product. Both parties are enormously excited about it. ‘It’s the first time I’ve been able to work at these price points,’ she enthuses. But the quality looks entirely comparable to her own label: everything is beautifully finished with lots of tiny detail. Ribbon is woven through the stitching and the fabrics are remarkably soft. A tiny grey pea coat could pass for cashmere but is a wool-blend, she says, as is a dinky dungaree. There’s a Fair Isle cardigan and a Fair Isle tank top, a pinafore dress and a cotton dress with gold piping – and everything has a trademark small round collar. ‘It’s about the nostalgia of our childhoods,’ she says. ‘It was all little pinafores and checked ginghams. I always go back to my childhood and try and bring in some element of how my sisters and I were dressed.’

94 09/11/2016 14:28

KIDS & EDUCATION / PROFILE

Making sure that the fabrics are soft is one of her priorities, and this reverts to her own childhood again. While her own mother ‘loved to dress us and had – still has – great taste,’ she still refers to collective memories of ‘being put in a dress you hated’. When she was little, ‘kids had to wear what was there – we didn’t have these amazing blends, there were lots of scratchy wools’. You can’t get away with that any more, she says, since ‘kids today are so vocal, they tell you what they like and dislike – a little four-year-old will tell you adamantly what she wants to wear.’ Every mother will vouch for that. Marie-Chantal has personal experience of those battles, and admits to seeking

help. ‘My daughter Olivia was the most challenging. When she was four or five she was a very strong personality and she wanted a dress a day. We battled over what she wanted to wear and what I wanted her to wear. I went to a paediatrician and asked, “how do we deal with this?” I didn’t want it to be a fight – my

95 NH_Nov16_Chantal_DPS.indd 95

mother had been so determined about how we should dress and I thought my daughter should have some say. The paediatrician said “Easy – pick three and let her choose one.” So it kind of evolved that way.’ Designing childrenswear didn’t occur to Marie-Chantal until she was pregnant with her third child, though she was interested in retail. Her first capsule collection launched in 2000, just after her son was born. ‘At the time there weren’t so many brands. Burberry didn’t do kids, Chloe didn’t do kids; there just weren’t those mass kids brands out there.’ Marie-Chantal is predictably stylish herself. ‘I am always in my own kind of uniform, jeans and tops. I love Valentino because he’s such a great friend and did my wedding dress.’ But she’s also a fan of M&S. ‘I love their tradition; there’s such a nice story to tell.’ Living in Chelsea, she often sees local children wearing her clothes, which appeals to her focus on value and longevity. ‘I like seeing them in the old styles because I love the idea of things being passed down, that’s where the quality shows.’ u marksandspencer.com @mariechantalchildren

HOUSE HUNTING

We managed to complete on a house within forty eight hours of receiving the offer, just before the SDLT changes came into effect. It saved the buyers money and the sellers their onward purchase. MOST INTERESTING PROPERTY:

I once sold a house for a lady who had lived in the property her entire life. It had been untouched for over eighty years, and she still had a newspaper in the study with the headline announcing John Lennon’s death.

WORDS

Kris Ericsson

A S S O C I AT E PA R T N E R / S A L E S M A N AG E R Knight Frank, Battersea & Nine Elms

REBECCA NOONAN

I

t's 4:15am and the alarm goes off. The day starts with a gym session followed by a walk in the park with my two feisty little terriers. Once the sun rises it's home to feed and dress my seven month old son. Then my wife and I, like a military operation, go from feeding to showering to dressing and we are out by 7:45am. My name is Kristoffer (Kris for short), I have been in the industry for over 12 years and whilst I'm originally from Sweden, I have spent the last 15 years in this beautiful city that I now call home. I have for the last six years been selling exclusive riverside apartments from Putney Bridge to Tower Bridge and have witnessed an incredible regeneration take place throughout London. Today, however I am not going into the office to sell riverside apartments. I have as of October had the pleasure of opening up Knight Franks 29th office in London, the newest and one of the most high profile offices in terms of location and exposure covering Battersea and Nine elms, two areas I have been covering extensively for the last six years.

The idea of Nine Elms once being talked about as a ghost town will long be forgotten

My new role has me running from meeting to meeting in Battersea and Nine Elms, which includes all kinds of properties and people. My meetings have me going from engaging with a first time buyer who is looking for a one bed near the park, to discussing and planning with developers who are looking at converting disused industrial buildings and viewing modern apartment blocks. The day varies incredibly and I love it. There are few jobs that allow for such a varied day and even fewer companies that can promise such diverse exposure. I have big hopes for this new office and with Nine Elms on my doorstop, who can blame me. There are 25,000 apartments due to be completed within the next five years, that’s a small city in its own right, with

a new extended northern line, the American embassy, Apple moving their headquarters to the neighbourhood and more and more high profile commercial tenants moving in; the light shines bright on an area that has recently seen so much bad press. The property market is not for the faint hearted, this is a highly competitive industry, ask anyone who’s ever tried their hands at developing in London. But due to demand, housing is undersupplied heavily every month, regardless of peaks and troughs. No other industry has ever witnessed such a solid return on investment as bricks and mortar has in London. Don’t just take my word for it; compare it to investing on the FTSE or gold for that matter, and with regards to Nine Elms, in five years’ time what was once a barren industrial site will be home to some of the most influential people and businesses in the country. The idea of Nine Elms once being talked about as a ghost town will long be forgotten. On that note, it’s now 9:30pm, time to leave the office, after all 4:15am is only around the corner. u

olk-rock band Mumford and Sons’ second studio album, Babel, has so far been their most successful one topping the charts in both the UK and the US last year and selling over two million copies. But where was the front cover shot? The four founders of the band Ω Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane – all chose to pose in Charles Baker Place, a former mixed use site in Wandsworth, SW London. Locations where it has been filmed include the City’s Barbican Estate as well as in Elephant & Castle, Bethnal Green, Waterloo Station, Shoreditch and Docklands. In 2014 it was this four-floor mansion on Lancaster Avenue in Hadley Wood, Hertfordshire which has eight bedrooms, six reception rooms, a conservatory plus large garden and a swimming pool. It was home to the contestants including Ben Haenow, who won against Fleur East. Why so popular? This family-friendly bulge of neighbourhoods has been a sought-after haunt of lawyers, advertising executives and media stars for over 30 years. But its areas still reflect the original villages that once dotted the landscape including Fulham Town, Parsons Green, Walham Green, North End and Sands End, although few people living here now realise these were once where London’s fashionable set went to party, gamble and engage in pleasures of the flesh.

3. Wandsworth

AVERAGE HOUSE PRICE £741,957 1,849 SEARCHES

Why so popular? Wandsworth Town is quickly being revamped as a plethora of new luxury developments pop up, and the town centre may soon join its surrounding commons as a prime area of London. But this is all a very new development. From the 14th century until very recently (when the Ram brewery shipped out) Wandsworth was a largely industrial zone, once famed for its hat makers and cloth dyers.

GENTRIFICATION Has gentrification had its day?

I

f you’re a Londoner, then you’ll be familiar with the signs of gentrification. Skips breeding like rabbits, dirty old pubs going gastro, branded coffee shops on every corner and new estate agents lining the high street. You can see it in so many places. Current hotspots include Balham, Streatham, Kings Cross, Kensal Rise, Canning Town, Hoxton, Stoke Newington, Elephant and Castle, Peckham Rye and central Croydon, according to Richard Rogerson, CEO of property consultant RFR. It wasn’t always like this. Those who aren’t millennials may remember when gentrification was short-hand for a neighbourhood inching its way out of poverty, and how only a decade ago the wealth differences between areas was less pronounced. But not now. Many young Londoners see gentrification as a consequence of social inequality, and politicians are taking note. This includes mayor Sadiq Khan, who said recently that there were ‘growing concerns’ about the phenomenon. “Gentrification can be a bit of a dirty word,” says Nic Whitten, head of research at agent JLL. “The dictionary definition is ‘wealthier residents moving into an area, and the changes that occur due to that influx of wealth at the expense or displacement of lower income existing residents’, so you can see why some people aren’t keen on it.” But whether you’re hoping for more artisan bread shops and boutique housing developments in your area, or conversely think gentrification should be banned, it’s worth considering how it works.

Chis_Dec16_GENTRIFICATION_DPS.indd 128

Many young Londoners see gentrification as a consequence of social inequality WHAT IS GENTRIFICATION? irstly, there’s the organic kind. This occurs in areas on the fringes F of already wealthy ones as those who can’t afford to live in the prime streets move to adjacent zones, pushing up house prices and changing the local retail landscape. It’s a process now taking place in Balham and Tooting, just down the road from uber-fashionable Clapham, for example. The other kind of gentrification is by design, a model that Sadiq Khan is most worried about. It is created by largescale new house building and other infrastructure improvements, often in partnership with the local authority. “Developers often get a bad reputation when they move into an area, so it’s up to us to reassure local people that we’re not

Brickwood Coffee & Bread, Balham

coming in with a bulldozer to destroy their community and that we have a genuine interest in working with them to make places better,” says Rebecca Wakefield of developer Banda Property. In Brixton, where Band Properties is currently developing a site, Rebecca says the London Borough of Lambeth has created what she thinks is a successful model for gentrification through its Brixton Economic Action Plan. “Gentrification can make those on the property ladder very wealthy and enhance the quality of shops and nightlife, but without intervention it can price out those on low incomes as well as some established local businesses,” she says. DO HOUSE PRICES RISE AS GENTRIFICATION SET IN? e recently looked at nine big W regeneration areas around London including Kings Cross, Elephant & Castle, Canning Town and parts of Ealing all of which have had at least 1,000 homes added by developments, and calculated the price growth that this new build activity delivered to each area,” says Nic Whitten. “Our research shows that this ‘gentrification effect’ lifted local house prices on average by 40.5% over and above the normal growth you'd expect, which was over a five-year period.” DO COFFEE SHOPS CREATE GENTRIFICATION? don’t think people build coffee shops I and then the customers come, it's the other way around,” says Nic Whitten. “You do get early retail adopters among the big chains who will try and get in early while the rents are still cheap, but really the local high street adapts to the new locals’ increased disposable income.”

PROPERTY / LONDON TODAY Elephant Park aerial view

CAN ANYTHING BE DONE TO STOP IT? ne argument put forward by O Richard Rogerson of RFR is that local people should benefit from the new opportunities and changes that gentrification brings to an area, rather than feeling they are victims of it, and that problems occur “when the community feels [the area] is changing beyond recognition,” he says. THE SOHO STORY ob Hill of agent Greater London Properties has been working in R Soho for decades and has seen the area change dramatically from a sex industry hub into a foodie haven. “Here, it was much less about gentrification and more about the area

evolving,” he says. “The sex shops have mostly gone now but it’s not because the rents went up, but rather that consumer tastes have changed – everything’s online now. It’s also become far more homes – office space with the same footprint as Buckingham Palace has been converted to residential since 2010, and that’s changed everything.” Rob says it has altered the profile of residents in the area as hundreds of upmarket apartments have been built, but that there is still a “Soho hardcore” who live here, albeit an ageing one. So are there any voices out there in support of gentrification? Academics from the University of Strathclyde who studied gentrification hotspots in London including Brixton, Battersea, Telegraph Hill,

129 Chis_Dec16_GENTRIFICATION_DPS.indd 129

Barnsbury and Dalston concluded that it is inevitable even if it isn’t desirable. Lead researcher Sergio Porta, when interviewed recently, went further saying that urban gentrification “is a natural force underpinning the evolution of cities” and that the process is “healthy” and a reflection of a city’s ability to adapt. Simon Charnock of agent Urban Spaces, agrees. He believes that regeneration is ‘crucial’ to the continued appeal of London because it provides a “long-term and creative solution to the continuing battles of demand outstripping supply, be it renovating existing unused properties or making best use of vacant land,” he says. “The so-called gentrification of areas should therefore be celebrated rather than criticised.” u

ore and more of us are hearing the call of the countryside and upping sticks from London’s busy streets. But where are we all going? The number of Londoners selling up and moving out increased by over 60% last year, according to research agent Hamptons International. This would appear to be a collective raspberry to London’s frenetic lifestyle as urbanites looking for space, a less competitive school enrolment system and less pollution vote with their feet. But it’s not just families cashing in their London equity. Hamptons International’s figures show that one in six of those escaping to the country are first-time buyers prepared to run the gauntlet of commuting into London to secure an affordable home. So where are the hotspots? Surrey envelopes much of SW

and SE London’s borders from Windsor in the west to Surbiton in the east and the county is one of the first Londoners consider, partly because of the multiple train lines that serve it. So we asked agents about the most sought after areas. u

MOUNT HERMON

ount Hermon is the area directly south of Woking town centre popular with commuters because of it's central train station. The area is treasured for features including Barnsbury Primary school, Woking College, Woking Park and the fact that you’re within touching distance of the town’s green belt. Detached houses range from £2.5 million to £600,000, while townhouses start at £450,000 and rise to £800,000.  For sale: Five bedroom detached house with large garden on Mount Hermon Road, £1.2 million. eybridge is known for St George’s Hill estate, which was the UK’s first major gated community. But if you want to be between the train station and the town centre then the streets around central Weybridge are not to be sniffed at. Prices start £400,000 for a cottage while larger terraced houses kick off at £460,000. Townhouses start at £750,000 and large terraces at £900,000 rising to £1.5 million for a detached.  For sale: Six bedroom detached mansion with a luxury interior, £1.85 million. HASCOMBE, GUILDFORD

ascombe is one of those villages that it’s hard to believe can be commutable from London, given the bucolic surroundings. Properties don’t come up here often and you’ll need deep pockets for a detached home with land here; probably £1.5 to £2.5 million with semis occasionally at around £800,000.  For sale: Langhurst, a five bedroom stockman’s cottage with outbuildings, pool, tennis court and stabling, £1.875m.
