J

une is my favourite month of the year. I may be a little biased (my birthday falls on the 11th) but there is always real sense of excitement in London as summer begins. Parks become more than thoroughfares, pub gardens are no longer just for smokers and rosé sales skyrocket. To capture a little of this joie de vivre, our fashion shoot this month celebrates flowers with some of the season’s prettiest embellished designs. Turn to page 24 for the Vilshenko number that has stolen my heart (and my self-restraint). I’ve noticed that Londoners, despite how conscientious they may be abroad, always seem to forgo any form of suncare in the city.To remind us all how important it is to lather on the SPF, we have rounded up the best suncreams on page 34. In this issue we are also celebrating another favourite summer staple: the picnic. From Fortnums to Paul’s Bakery, page 40 is all about hampers full of goodies – well, you’ve got to have something to soak up all that Pimms adn Aperol. Our usual excellent fashion, kids’ and interiors pages are interspersed with trips to Tokyo, a fabulous Father’s Day gift guide and our interview with designer Matthew Williamson who discusses his first ever interiors collaboration. I hope you enjoy the issue (and my favourite month). Ciao!◆

must see

Oscar Wilde was a natural satirical writer. Lady Windermere’s Fan, however, was his first great commercial successes. Following the story of a young, aristocratic Lady who suspects her husband is having an affair, this is a scandalous and melodramatic play that sees Lady Windermere leave her family for her lover. This is shocking, funny and clever must-see.

HOT SEATS Matthew Williamson’s flamboyant fashion translates to interiors in a new collaboration with Duresta. Absolutely quizzes him Interview Pendle Harte

PENDLE HARTE: You have worked with interiors before, collaborating with The Rug Company and Osborne and Little, but this is your first foray into furniture. Where did you look for inspiration? MATTHEW WILIAMSON: The collection came to life mostly by looking at pieces of my own, bought mostly from antique markets or dealers over the years and which I’ve adapted or updated myself. I also collect pictures and samples of anything that catches my eye, so it was a fun process to build a collection which came from my personal favourite pieces.

fashion and interiors industries that I see a real crossover in my work. I imagine that a woman who buys one of my dresses also wants a fabulous sofa or wallpaper and it’s this 360 degree lifestyle approach that I love most. PH: How would you describe your own home? What are your favourite things and where do they come from? MW: I’m lucky with my home as it has good bones. It’s a Victorian townhouse and the rooms are large with high ceilings and great original details so really my job was just to dress it and make it personal to me. I love the lounge most of all. It’s a large lozenge shape with an old wooden barrel door, original parquet floors and big bay windows overlooking the garden. This room is quite neutral but the furniture and items I’ve collected over the years add colour and character and tell a personal story. It’s changing all the time. I love moving things around

I’M NOT about glitz. MY MOST

treasured items ARE inexpensive, SENTIMENTAL PIECES

PH: Your style has always involved colour and print. How do fashion colours and prints translate into furniture? MW: My passion is for colour, patterns, textiles, travel, culture and exotic elements. I love bringing my DNA to whatever product I’m working on. While fashion has been my main career focus, there is such a huge overlap between the

HOMES & INTERIORS / PROFILE I prefer

to MAKE SOMETHING poor look RICH regularly to keep it fresh. It’s easier than you sometimes think to make your space evolve, and adding a few small touches here and there can help to update your look. Flowers, candles, cushions, book piles and pictures are easy ways to add areas of interest. A bit like my clothes, I prefer to make something poor look rich. I think that comes from my work ethic and from my parents. I’m not about glitz. My most treasured items are inexpensive, sentimental pieces: a necklace with charms picked up on my travels and a bowl of rocks collected from the beach. PH: How did the collaboration with Duresta come about? MW: Duresta is a brilliant brand based in the UK, making all its furniture by hand. I’m drawn to brands which value craftsmanship and quality and they certainly do that. Making my first line of furniture with them has been a passion project which I’ve loved. It’s been a real journey to see these pieces come to life over the past year and I’m thrilled with the results as they really reflect my brand’s DNA. Now, the difficult thing for me is to edit which pieces I want to have in my own home.

PH: What did you learn from it? MW: I learnt so much. It’s always fascinating to step out of your comfort zone and pick up new skills and work on different projects. I totally underestimated the time, patience and craftsmanship of each and every piece until I visited the Duresta factory in Long Eaton and saw for myself what a labour of love the entire process is. PH: Who are your favourite designers, both fashion and interiors? MW: My favourite designers are Ossie Clarke, Zandra Rhodes, Christian Lacroix and Dries Van Noten. PH: What will your next fashion collection look like? MW: The next fashion collection will drop on my website in May. It’s a fresh collection of separates for the ‘see now, buy now, wear now’ consumer. We have built a new fashion and lifestyle platform with products available on our site. PH: Are any other interior projects or collaborations in the pipeline? MW: I’ve just launched a collection of stationery and am soon to launch sportswear in May, followed by a designer colouring book by the end of the year and I then have my eye on childrenswear and china.  Matthew Williamson for Duresta is available at Harrods

FASHION / SWIMWEAR

WE MAKE BUYING swimwear a PERSONAL shopping EXPERIENCE

BEACH READY

The ultimate guide to summer swimwear from Amelie’s Follies

F

or most of us, this is the time of year to start thinking about beach holidays and the dreaded swimwear shopping that goes with them. The majority of women will wait until the very last minute to go looking for that elusive perfect swimsuit or bikini, very often leaving a shop either deflated or with the best of a bad bunch – but it doesn’t have to be this way. First of all, don’t leave it until the last minute. Even in shops where you can find swimwear all year round, their selection will be best from March to May. From May

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

B&C_June16_Amelies Follies.indd 28

till September, retailers get very little new swimwear stock, and with summer sales usually taking place in July, stock only gets smaller the closer you get to that longedfor beach break. Make sure to go swimwear shopping on a day that you feel like it and with some time to spare. The bikini/swimsuit has to fit well and make you feel as confident as possible whilst you probably feel at your most exposed. Don’t skimp on price. How much would you spend on an outfit to attend a

wedding for example? Why not think of your swimwear the same? After all, you will wear it every day of your holiday. Take advantage of the ever-growing selection of beachwear that is out there. Most swimwear brands now also do wraps and kaftans to go with bikinis or swimsuits. So, whilst you’re trying on bikinis, look at dresses and pareos to go with it. Another important rule of swimwear buying (and probably the most important one) is: buy for your shape and colouring. Also, trust your sales assistant. Whilst she may not know you personally, she knows her job and more importantly she will know her stock. You are shopping for something you will wear in bright sunshine whilst you’re having fun and relaxing, so try and think colour! Although black tends to be the go to/safe colour for women, this is not an outfit for the office. Black can be draining on paler skin tones, only accentuaing fairer skin. Whereas bright punchy colours will lift you and give your skin tone a more healthy golden hue. Our top tip? We find that reds and oranges work on practically everyone. At Amelie’s Follies, we make your swimwear shopping a personal shopping experience. We will do the running around, and even though we may push you outside of your comfort zone sometimes, we will endeavour to only make you try styles we are confident will suit your size, shape and lifestyle. And most of all make it so you don’t dread swimwear buying for next time.  ● Amelie’s Follies

nder a white stone archway just off Bellevue Road, Anthony Laban Home sits neatly in a quiet courtyard. Flowers decorate the entrance to the salon, and upon entering, I find there's no designated reception area, the customer is at the at the heart of this salon. You’re not tucked away in a dark corner, you’re in prime position; sociable and in daylight. Anthony and I discuss my hairstyle, paying attention to my eye colour and skin tone. He comes up with the perfect idea and we’re underway. I’m seated and given a vintage style tea tray with all the trimmings. Foils are neatly applied to my hair as Anthony tells me about his plans for pop-up salons Ω putting the fun back into hairdressing. After a hair wash and a head massage, he cuts into my hair, having a bit of fun with it until the beachy look is perfected, creating shapes and textures that I didn’t know existed in hairdressing. A bouncy hair-dry follows, with a touch of beach spray finishing the look. Anthony and his team have me dreaming of summer holidays. There’s no small talk here. It’s like meeting with friends for a a catch up, where you just so happen to leave with lovely looking locks. u ● ANTHONY LABAN HOME 3 Bennet Court, SW17; 020 3475 6644 anthonylabanhome.com

JOE PUBLIC Wo r d s E ly s i a Ag n e w

n the warmer months, take-out food comes in a new and improved form. Instead of cosying up by the fire with a pre-cooked meal, one-stop pop-ups with outdoor dining areas seem more appealing. Joe Public, sitting on the top of Clapham Common station, satisfies our summer needs. With an offering of boozy slushies, in-house beers and wine on tap, there's nothing better than kicking back on the benches by the patio heaters on a warm summer's evening. Choosing from the Californian-style pizzas, I opt for the slice topped with sausage, bacon, ground beef, pepperoni, caramelized onion and mozzarella, all served up on a tasty sourdough base. The slice goes down well with a glass of Joe Public's white wine offering; perfectly crisp, complementing the spicy pizza. One slice is enough at this place, but if you’re feeling like a feast you can order a huge 20” pie to eat in or to take away with you. Joe Public is the brand new sister restaurant to WC, Clapham's popular wine and charcuterie bar below. Both are reconstructed public toilets, adding to the authenticity and quirkiness of the place. Dining out in an ex public toilet Ω it definitely doesn't get much quirkier than that. Don’t work yourself too hard with the BBQ this summer; head to Clapham's newest grab-and-go bar, where the staff will cook up a pizza feast. Joe Public serves breakfasts too, where you can pick up a freshly baked buttie. 

Bistro Union

Quintessentially British neighbourhood food on Abbeville Road Wo r d s e ly s i a ag n e w

B

ringing village living to south west London, Abbeville Road offers up a selection of bars, bistros, delis and boutiques, adding to its ever-growing cafe culture. Bistro Union is a bold addition to the road, with a bright exterior, stripped floorboards, a grey, white and yellow colour scheme and zinc tables. Mustard tiles decorate the bar, which offers a casual seating area for drinks and nibbles. Sipping a seasonal cocktail, we scour the menu while enjoying a cup of popcorn, an usual touch. You might find diners snacking on smoked pig's cheek and pickled cockles in this casual dining spot, but we go straight in for the starters. Choosing from the modern British options, we select a duo of appetisers: the house mussels and the duck and chicken liver parfait. The mussels come as a hearty portion swimming in perry, which is soaked up with sourdough. The parfait is smooth, and the orange jelly complements the flavours. To follow, in keeping with the

British theme, we go for the toad in the hole and the fish pie. Simple, traditional dishes, but the chefs at Bistro Union certainly don’t miss a trick when it comes to presentation. The toad in the hole is impressive, served up in a huge Yorkshire pudding with a small boat of Guinness onion gravy. The fish pie is rich and packed with chunks of salmon, Cornish cod, smoked haddock, crushed peas and dill. It all goes down perfectly with a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. A selection of ice cream scoops seal the deal. Bistro Union is the second Clapham venture for Adam Byatt, and although this restaurant strips off the white table cloths and fine-dining approach found at Trinity, it’s certainly worth a visit for casual dining. It’s a place where you can try out seasonal cocktails, bar snacks and hearty meals. A place where you might go for a glass of wine and a scotch egg. A place that doesn’t take itself too seriously.  B I ST R O U N I O N 40 Abbeville Road, SW4 bistrounion.co.uk

5 To cook the brown rice, put it into a large saucepan, add enough water and a generous pinch of salt and bring to the boil. 6 Cover with a lid, reduce the heat and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until rice is tender. This is a super-simple brown rice and doesn’t need much flavour as everything else has lots of flavour. 7 To serve, put a large spoonful of brown rice into a bowl.Top with 4–6 meatballs per person, some tomato sauce and a tablespoon of Greek yogurt. here is no place in the world like Tokyo. There is no city in which you can feel so overwhelmed, so completely entranced and yet find such stillness. Here’s how to experience the best of this intense dichotomy.

CONTEMPORARY f the first aim of any trip is to eschew clichéd tourist traps, I Park Hyatt New York Bar (à la Lost in Translation) is out. But enlisting the expert help of InsideJapan is a necessity; when you have someone like Tyler Palma to show you hidden bars in Shibuya and get you into locals-only izakayas (Japan’s answer to a pub), you’re guaranteed to get the real deal. He’ll make sure you see authentic Tokyo, as it lives and breathes, answering questions and giving tips on where to go for fantastic ramen (Hashigo in Ginza) and tempura (Motoyoshi in Minato-ku), or cool places to get great coffee (Blue Bottle, Aoyama). He’ll show you unique pockets of Harajuku and Shimokitazawa, and help you to navigate the mind-boggling technology district, Akihabara. You’ll feel like a native, which will only be enhanced once you check into

your ‘home away from home’ – Aman Tokyo. This isn’t your average home. Yet its gasp-inducing apartment rooms and suites are the pieds-à-terre you’ve always dreamed of owning. In the soaring Otemachi Tower in Marunochi business district, Aman Tokyo will give you a new definition of luxury. Here, showiness is replaced by subtlety and true omotenashi – Japanese hospitality – supersedes obtrusive service. This phenomenal resort, little over a year old, is a modern interpretation of traditional Japanese homes. Materials such as camphor wood, granite and washi paper capture the classic aesthetic and spirit of engawa, which is the transitional area between living and outdoor space. Panoramic views of Tokyo greet you through floor-to-ceiling windows; advanced home technology introduces you to the city’s latest inventions; and the sumo-sized furo invites you to indulge in Japanese-style bathing. Although if you want to explore Zen and Kampo herb healing spa therapies, simply head downstairs to Aman Spa. Within its 25,000 sq ft wellbeing centre you’ll discover contemporary adaptations of ancient rituals, majestic treatment rooms – each with private observation deck for post-treatment rehydration – Japanese and western-style hot baths, showers and steam rooms, a 30-metre heated swimming pool, and a state-of-the-art gym.

Even frequent spa-goers will be genuinely blown away by the facilities and the therapists’ skills, which should be tested during a 90-minute Seasonal Journey. It doesn’t matter which season you go, Aman Tokyo's incredible amenities are a brilliant way to say konichiwa to modern Japan.

CLASSIC he ‘must-see’ Tsukiji Fish Market is great for novelty, but T you’re better heading straight to Palace Hotel Tokyo, where you can sample the Market’s produce sans queues in the intimate, six-person Tatsumi tempura bar of Wadakura. In the sixth-floor Sushi Kanesaka you can savour Michelinstarred sushi by Shinji Kanesaka, or be introduced to traditional Japanese favourites in the main dining room. The seasonal kaiseki set menus are the best way to get a comprehensive feel for Wadakura’s impossibly elegant dishes and enjoy Palace Hotel Tokyo’s renowned views of the Imperial Palace Garden and East Tokyo’s skyline. Minutes’ walk north, Nihonbashi’s sophisticated streets are glittered with luxury department stores housing international designer labels and heritage brands manufacturing fine traditional

crafts. Weary legs find respite in the terrifically elegant surrounds of Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo. Perched on the 38th floor of Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower, it’s not the only thing that is sky-high; service here is impeccable. Never has there been more attentive yet utterly unobtrusive staff anticipating your needs before you even do. This extends from the moment you enter the palatial foyer, through to the opulent day spa with Asian and western treatments, the sleek, high-tech fitness centre, and the twelve international bar and dining options. Refuelling at Sense, the fine Chinese restaurant, is wise; the fare is famous as are views of the cityscape and the iconic Skytree®.

If you want to get up close and personal with this impressive landmark, it’s possible to arrange a private helicopter charter. In the 80-minute ride, the Eurocopter Hermès Edition hovers over Tokyo’s skyline, natural wonders Sagami Bay and Lake Ashinoko and the iconic and serenly beautiful Mount Fuji. Even in the slightly smaller rooms feel incredibly regal, with their stained wood, leather and silk forms. And, when you add in the Michelin-starred French restaurant, Signature, the ground floor fruit shop with the city’s most expensive fruit, and a particularly Instagrammable patisserie, you quickly realise this is the place for a truly decadent take on classic Tokyo. 

HOMES & INTERIORS / SPOTLIGHT I have always had A PASSION for interior design AND HAVE worked in SOFT furnishings for years with all the new developments along the river and at Battersea Power Station. ABS: Favourite era in interior design? AP: I love classic pieces but with a modern touch. From French Country House chic to elegant pieces based on classic designs, the range of beautiful home furnishings and accessories available in the shop combines contemporary style with timeless elegance.

HOME COMFORTS Angie Pinkney of Decara Home talks interior design I n t e r v i e w a b s o l u t e ly

ABSOLUTELY: What inspired you to open Decara Home? ANGIE PINKNEY: I’ve always had a passion for interior design and have worked in soft furnishings for many years. I was really keen to expand my horizons and to start a new exciting venture. I love sourcing pieces for the home and wanted the ability to share my passion and interests with clients. The shop is a wonderful way of working with people and allows me to bring a personal touch.

ABS: Why did you chose Battersea? AP: I’ve always liked the area and felt that the whole re-development of the area would create new opportunities. The Queenstown Road in particular, where the shop is, is increasingly becoming a centre for all things for the home, with a variety of shops selling bathrooms, flooring, tiling and furniture to name a few. ABS: What do you like about the area? AP: It’s an exciting place to be these days

57 B&C_June16_Decara Home.indd 57

ABS: What is your favourite piece stocked in the shop at the moment? AP: I have two favourites at the moment. The first is a lovely sideboard in a light coloured wood, with twelve drawers. The second is a coffee table which I designed myself and have specially made for the shop. It has an American oak top with a large glass inset and a display shelf for books underneath. It can be made to size. ABS: Do you offer interiors advice? AP: Yes, I’m able to provide a personal service helping clients with advice and ideas for their home and am happy to source pieces of furniture from my range of suppliers. Decara Home is one of two stockists in London of products from Flamant. ABS: What kind of home accessories do you stock? AP: We stock a selection of table lamps and chandeliers, a wide range of mirrors and accessories and gifts including glassware, textiles, bed linen, tableware, room scents and candles, olive oils, prints and photographs. ABS: Describe your home? DECARA: The house is done up with a neutral palette of soft off-whites, browns and greys. It’s got a modern feel, with pieces inspired by Provence but mixed with some carefully chosen antiques. It’s light and airy. The house has changed and grown with the family. u 125 Queenstown Road, SW8 3RH 02076223388 decara-home.co.uk

n import from America and ever-popular with celebs, the classic but utterly cute design of Salt-water Sandals specially made for toddlers is a winwin. Eschewing the glittery, embellished and overwrought designs so often offered to kids these days, these plain and simple summer shoes remain stylish while being completely functional. Moulded for Baby’s growing feet with built-in arch support, the ace in the Salt-water sleeve is that these sandals can get wet – in fact, getting wet is good for them and allows them to mould to the shape of the foot, so littles have the allclear to splash around. u

aving graduated from university with a degree in design, I have always had an interest in interiors and the fundamentals of architecture and building design. When I left university to start my professional career, property was the perfect answer and ticked all the boxes in terms of what I wanted to do. I started my property career selling new homes in the centre of Manchester. The apartments being sold were part of a regeneration scheme that consisted of commercial, retail and residential properties. Over a three year period, I saw the development slowly form and along the way I met many different people involved in making the exciting scheme happen. Looking back it was such a great project to be a part of and it was the perfect opportunity for me to learn and digest most aspects of property and the infrastructure of rebuilding a community. After the economic crash of 2007/2008, a very good friend

Chestertons form part of the local community

of mine in the property industry suggested that I transfer from sales to lettings. The transition was actually extremely easy. After a further three years in Manchester, I returned back to my London roots and have lived and worked in south west London ever since. I love the area. Battersea and Clapham provide such a wide range of property styles suitable for most ages and backgrounds. The area also has a lot of open green space to enjoy and has a very friendly feel, a very unique factor. I enjoy visiting properties and providing a tailored service to each individual landlord that I meet. The wealth of knowledge some landlords have allows me to learn more and more about the history of the property and the area.

Lettings is a very personable job and on a daily basis allows you to really tune into an individual’s requirements. It is this attention to detail that can allow you to stand apart from the competition. Focusing on every aspect a client asks for is a very challenging task at times, and the feeling of exceeding expectations is unbelievably rewarding. I work very closely with our Battersea Park office and our brand new Wandsworth office. These two offices are two of our newest offices out of a network of 13 in south west London. Managing the Chestertons Battersea and Clapham office is an absolute joy. The incredibly talented team thrive on being experts in our field and always deliver outstanding customer service. Located on Battersea Rise, Chestertons form part of the local community and regularly sponsor events held by local schools and sports clubs. We are also proud sponsors of Chestertons Polo in the Park – the world’s largest three-day polo tournament which will take place in Hurlingham Park, Fulham on the 3rd, 4th and 5th June this year. ◆

FAMOUS PLACES London hides a plethora of celebrity homes. These are the most recent to come on the market

ROTTEN PLACE TO BUY?

t’s four decades since punk spilled spitting and screaming onto our TV screen and the Sex Pistols’ released their debut single, Anarchy in the UK. Original band members Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock shocked TV interviewers and caused mayhem at concerts. But it didn’t last long. After touring the US, Rotten – real name John Lydon – left the band in 1978 and retreated to a house he’d just bought in Chelsea. Lydon, now 60, sold the five-floor property in 1981 when he moved to New York, and the building has since been divided up into two apartments, with a blue plaque outside to celebrate his time there. Back then the apartment on Gunter Grove had smoke-stained walls and a low-slung futon style couch, but it’s since had a makeover and is yours to rent for £1,295 a week. u Savills 0207 578 9020 www.savills.co.uk

nominated for a Grammy award. But after nine years together the band broke up, blaming internal conflicts. The singer has been ploughing his own furrow since then and has a new solo album out next month These People - with songs tackling topics such as the war in Syria, the Arab Spring uprisings and the death of a close friend. But it all started at Vernon Yard Recordings, an independent label owned by Virgin Records based in Notting Hill. The building was converted into houses, where a four bedroom mews house is now up for sale at £4.5m. u Domus Nova 0207 727 1717 www.domusnova.com

And it’s not the first time she has played feisty female characters. Before joining the period drama, she had parts in Doctor Who and After You’ve Gone, but has also produced movies including a short film starring Charles Dance. The actress also has an eye for property; she shared a penthouse flat with her brother in Pimlico before moving into her own pad, an interest that evidently runs in the family as her father John is chairman of the Groucho Club and part owns the Sloane Square hotel. SCENE OF A HITCHCOCK HOUSING DRAMA

aster of suspense Alfred Hitchcock got his first shot at directing in 1922 with the film Number 13. This and many of his early films were shot at Gainsborough Studios. However, at the start of WW2 the building’s chimney was deemed a liability during air raids, and the studio was sold in 1949. After starting life as a power station, then going into the movie business, the building in Hoxton has also been used as a whisky store, housed theatre productions, and a fashion show by Alexander McQueen. Much of it was demolished in 2002 and flats were built on the site, but as a nod to its cinematic past, you’ll find a huge sculpture of Hitchock’s head in the centre of the four apartment blocks. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been involved in many fabulous properties whilst working as a Lettings Manager at Chestertons, but if I had to pick one, I would say Candlemakers Apartments. It used to be a Candle Making Factory that was converted into high specification flats. n the past month, we have experienced a noticeable increase in demand from families looking to get ahead of the crowds and secure a rental property prior to the very busy summer period. And for the chance of finding their ideal home, many of these families are willing to commit to longer tenancies. RADICAL MAKEOVERS?

he capital’s race to build more T homes is having an unexpected result for some of its less predictable neighbourhoods, says Nigel Lewis. High prices and fewer homes for sale in the most desirable parts of London mean areas that have been less fashionable for years, are getting makeovers and – more importantly for London’s accommodationstarved residents – new homes. Areas that buyers might have previously struck off their wish lists are now go-to areas. And the developers’ cranes are following suit, crowding once sleepy skylines with their one-legged swingers. Here we look at some of the areas being upgraded with both regeneration cash as well as new, gleaming apartments developments.

SOUTH: ELEPHANT & CASTLE

here were some tentative signs of regeneration in and around Elephant and Castle during the mid-noughties when an expensive improvement programme was announced and several high-profile new homes developments were built. But after these were completed, the recession put a stop to any new money coming in. It’s all now picking up again with £3 billion earmarked for the area. As well as a more pedestrianfriendly road layout, there are several new developments under construction including Elephant Park, a former council estate. It is to include a new shopping precinct, gardens, and 2,500 sustainable homes. Developer Lendlease has just launched its latest phase called Highwood Gardens, which comprises 307 homes surrounded by attractive courtyard gardens designed by leading landscape architects, Gillespies. The new apartments at Highwood Gardens are available from £540,000. For more information, call 020 3675 9955 or visit www.elephantpark.co.uk. u

CENTRAL: SOHO SQUARE

ou might assume Soho and regeneration wouldn’t go together given its West End location, but only recently has the area’s sleazier reputation begun to wear off – much to the horror of fans such as Steven Fry and Marc Almond, who want to stop what they call its sanitisation. The arguments over Soho centre around its retail makeover and the loss of the small, independent shops that make it so unique and, consequently, apartment developers are treading carefully. Rather than shiny new blocks, older properties are being upgraded. The most recent example is the Duke of Portland’s former townhouse on Soho Square. Built during the late 17th century, this Grade II listed property is now called 10, Soho Square, a development by Oakmayne Bespoke where just one apartment is left to purchase for £4.75 million. WEST: WHITE CITY

f you’ve been wondering exactly what’s going to happen to the former BBC HQ site at White City, then we can reveal all. The site is to retain a connection with the BBC – it’s Worldwide operation has already moved into a new HQ and three studios will still operate on the site. But the army of camera operators, presenters, and stressed producers will now be joined by 950 new homes and apartments, new cafés and restaurants, a cinema, offices and a new outpost of Soho House. The first phase of the development includes 432 homes, due for completion in 2018, where prices start at £700,000 for a one-bedroom apartment to £7 million for a penthouse.
