Yorkshire YATTER
Lisa Byrne meets one Leeds-born local who shows exams results aren't the be all and end all
If the ominous dark cloud of August exam results is threatening to ruin your summer break, then please take solace in the fact that one of Yorkshire’s most successful exports left school barely scraping two A-levels. Leeds-born Lucy Go has recently been awarded a King’s Award for Enterprise and a prestigious Time Magazine’s Best Invention in 2023 for founding global wellness and beauty brand Lyma. A host of celebrities including Sienna Miller, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez are huge fans of Lucy’s iconic range of lasers and supplements. Not bad for someone who achieved just two Es in geography and home economics at Gateways School in Harewood.
But despite jetting across the planet running a hugely successful global brand, Leeds will always be home for glamorous Lucy, whose parents still live here. Chatting over lunch hosted by wellness guru Dr Lubna Khan-Salim at Grantley Hall, it’s clear that Lucy keeps her Yorkshire feet firmly planted on the ground. “It is so amazing being back, seeing all the gorgeous, yellow-stoned houses
around Harewood. Sadly, it’s so rare that I can make it home and I miss the calmness here.”
Lucy, 51, founded Lyma with a supplement after falling seriously ill with septicaemia following the birth of her daughter, now 11. “I truly thought I was going to die, it was horrific.” During her recuperation Lucy met Prof Paul Clayton who prescribed her a prototype using patented ingredients dosed at active levels that were able to be absorbed. “It was miraculous, within weeks I felt better than ever.”
Lucy investigated producing the supplement which, through word of mouth, has transformed into a multi-million-pound company. Despite mixing with A-listers, the globetrotter, who also has a two-year-old son, is warm, funny and totally no nonsense, especially when it comes to health and beauty. “You may see an ingredient on a supplement, but it’s the amount that makes the di erence and often it’s miniscule.” She is also a major advocate on banning the term anti-aging. “Getting older is a huge positive – so many people just don’t have that luxury. But what’s truly upsetting is the amount of unregulated cosmetic work young women are having done.”
Lucy’s life appears to be supremely glamorous, from being interviewed by Martha Stewart in New York to seeing Cara Delevingne using Lyma Laser while preparing for the Met Ball and discussing the competitive beauty market on Bloomberg. “Yes, it is incredible, and I cannot believe how far things have gone. But the most important part of my life is my family and spending quality time with my children.”
And her M&S loving Leeds mum keeps her grounded.

“Great British Bake O was exciting, chaotic and fun”
Let them eat Cake
We all loved Rowan Claughton on Great British Bake O and even more so now as he has created a special concoction for Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Absolutely tucks in…
The 14th series of the Great British Bake O may have been won by Matty Edgell, but Absolutely was bowled over by Rowan Claughton, the then 21-yearold from Yorkshire, whose bubbly personality and motto of “go big or go home” encapsulated everything that is great about the show. He stood out for all the right reasons, and from an early age he was more than happy to be di erent. “I’ve never had an interest which aligned with my peers as a child,” he tells Absolutely. “Whilst everyone was kicking a ball and screaming for their favourite team to win, I was reading cookbooks and absorbing as much information as possible. Whilst they went to the stadiums to support their home team, I went to cooking conventions to learn from the best. That’s not to say I don’t value sport, but I didn’t relate to it like I did with baking. I think forging my own interests away from the crowd meant I developed a
really personal connection to my hobby in the same way people feel that connection to sport. My sport just happened to be baking.”
Rowan was barely into his second decade when he started taking his own sport to another level. “I remember the first proper creation I made myself and it was pretty ambitious for an 11-year-old,” he laughs. “It was a three tier anniversary cake, all white and decorated with silver pearls. Very regal indeed, and it was a very proud moment for me. It also didn’t collapse on the way to their house, which is always the biggest fear for any baker, even aged 11.
“I can’t really pinpoint a time when I realised I had a talent, per se,” he adds, “but there was one occasion where I think it clicked for me that I had a knack for baking. I brought a cake to a family event and I don’t think everyone believed that I had made it. I was flattered that they thought my parents were the cause of the creation, but really, it was little old me putting all that practice to the test.”
The hobby remained just that until Rowan found himself at a career crossroads.
“I was in my final year of University applying for graduate jobs that I didn’t really want, and I felt slightly lost in my future. Did I want to be a writer? A journalist maybe? I even considered a role in London, and I applied to a job with a little channel called the BBC,” he smiles.
“What I realised was that I wanted to go on Great British Bake O . I have baked forever, and loved the show since its inception, so I pulled out my phone, sat next to a vase of flowers (to add maturity to my otherwise chaotic Uni house share setting) and recorded my application. The day I was accepted onto the show was the same day the BBC rejected me. It was a rollercoaster of a Friday.”
The BBC’s loss as Rowan brightened up Bake O . “I’d describe my experience more generally as exciting, chaotic and fun,” he looks back to last year. “To bake on TV on a set so famous even Ryan Reynolds visited was surreal (I was booted before Ryan came, sadly), but it was the best thing I’ve ever done, and the friends I’ve made along the way have made it all the more worth it.
world so di erent to my normal one. I just feel grateful to have had the opportunity, and I will carry that with me forever.”
YSP SPONGE
“I think more personally, my experience was formative, uplifting and a rming,” Rowan adds. “To get on the show is a success in itself, and for my first taste of the real world out of university to be on GBBO has made me so much more confident in my future endeavours. It also made me realise that, actually, I can do the scary things I have often shied away from. Just close your eyes, breathe and run at any opportunity which shows itself to you – within reason.”
Has it been a life changer? “Yes, completely,” he nods. “But less in a career way (which I am lucky to have following my appearance on the show) and more in my personal development. I’ve never felt more secure in who I am, and I have seen a glimpse of a
Rowan has gone on to work with some great brands on di erent recipes, but a new collaboration perhaps beats the lot. Rowan has agreed to take part in a taste-bud tingling summer campaign with Yorkshire Sculpture Park and its amazing galleries and spaces, all of which are a registered charity and accredited museum. With no time for loafing about, Rowan has been secretly working with YSP to come up with a special bespoke cake that will be baked onsite and sold in the Park’s restaurants and cafes throughout the summer.
“I wanted to get involved because, firstly, how surreal would it be to have one of my creations in a place I’ve visited for years. I’m not too far away, so a trip to the park to see the art and ever evolving exhibitions have been a Saturday staple since I was young,” Rowan explains the attraction of the partnership. “I then was keen because I wanted to do something completely di erent to what I have been doing since Bake O , and to work with the team at YSP
to create something tangible for people to enjoy was the perfect pivot.” And his creation? “An absolutely delicious Yorkshire Tea sponge cake with lemon buttercream and passionfruit curd. All things Yorkshire, all things YSP and with a hint of me and my baking style. A perfect combination.”
Rowan talks warmly about Yorkshire in general, with one place in particular being deserving of extra praise. “York just feels so rich to me,” he smiles. “Rich with food, with culture and with amazing people. I might be somewhat biased because I lived there for three years, but it really is a home from home and I find myself drawn to it. I’ll be moving back soon, I hope!”
As well as a potential house move, Rowan is also thinking ahead when it comes to his career. “I really want to work on something in-print. Maybe a food column or some recipe features, anything would be great,” he says about what’s next (and instantly catching the eye of Absolutely’s editor). “It’s a real passion of mine, and being a food writer has been a dream for years. One day.” Rowan Claughton is very much going big.
Rowan Claughton will host a special Afternoon Tea event at YSP on Thursday 1 August 2024 – Yorkshire Day – which will include his special tea sponge, as well as a demonstration and audience Q&A. Booking can be made by calling 01924 832508 or emailing hospitality@ysp.org.uk

Why we love WHITBY
Make the most of what’s left of summer by visiting the popular coastal town
Whitby has a rich history dating back over a thousand years. Its story is interwoven with maritime tradition, religious significance, and literary inspiration, making it a fascinating subject of study.
Whitby’s earliest recorded history begins with the establishment of a monastery by King Oswiu of Northumbria in 657 AD. The monastery, known as Streonshalh, was founded by St Hilda and became a significant religious centre. The Synod of Whitby in 664 AD, held at the monastery, was a pivotal event in the history of the English Church, determining the method of calculating Easter and aligning English Christianity more closely with Roman practices.
The original monastery was destroyed during Viking raids in the 9th century, a
common fate for many early Christian sites in England. The Vikings established a settlement, which they named Whitby, derived from the Old Norse "Hvítabýr", meaning "white settlement".
In the late 11th century, following the Norman Conquest, the monastery was re-founded as a Benedictine abbey by Reinfrid, a former soldier of William the Conqueror. Whitby Abbey grew in wealth and influence, dominating the town and region. The abbey’s ruins, which still stand today, are iconic and have been a prominent feature of Whitby’s landscape for centuries.
Whitby’s coastal location made it an important maritime hub. During the Middle Ages, it became a centre for shipbuilding and fishing, industries that would define the town’s economy for many years. The port of Whitby was known for producing whaling ships in the 18th century. The town’s sailors ventured into the Arctic, bringing back whale oil and blubber, which were essential for the growing industries of Britain.
One of Whitby’s most famous historical figures is Captain James Cook, the renowned explorer. Cook served his apprenticeship in Whitby, learning the skills that would later enable him to navigate and map large portions of the Pacific Ocean. The house where Cook once lived is now the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, preserving his legacy and connection to Whitby.
Whitby’s dramatic scenery has inspired numerous writers and artists. The town is famously associated with Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula. Stoker visited Whitby in 1890 and was captivated by its gothic atmosphere, which influenced the setting of his novel. The 199 steps leading up to Whitby Abbey and the abbey’s eerie ruins play a crucial role in the book’s narrative.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Whitby developed as a popular seaside resort, attracting visitors with its sandy beaches, scenic views, and fresh sea air. The arrival
of the railway in 1839 made the town more accessible, boosting its tourism industry.
Today, Whitby retains its historical charm while embracing modern tourism. The town hosts numerous festivals, such as the Whitby Goth Weekend and the Whitby Folk Week, celebrating its diverse cultural heritage.
The annual Whitby Regatta, one of the oldest sea regattas in the country, reflects the town’s enduring maritime traditions.

York’s popular Fish&Forest is heading to a new site, o ering more space and the prospect of additional dishes. Chef Stephen Andrews explains more
Fish&Forest, based on Micklegate in York, has confirmed a new location in 2024. The popular restaurant, founded by chef Stephen Andrews, will be moving to Grape Lane, York, increasing covers by 50 per cent. Fish&Forest launched as a pop-up concept in 2018 and opened its doors at Spark York in 2020 before moving to the current site on Micklegate. It’s already attracting attention within the food scene after being recognised in the Michelin Guide for its Commitment to Sustainable Gastronomy, being recently listed on Harden’s, as well as receiving an AA Rosette. The restaurant serves seasonal and sustainable seafood and game, with crab coming directly from the fishermen in Whitby, oysters from
Lindisfarne and game from small local farms and estates. But there’s also huge attention paid to using seasonal herbs and vegetables, which are foraged from the local countryside. This way of developing dishes means that the ever-changing menu always features a vegan o er too.
Yorkshireman Stephen is a self-taught chef who has worked and trained in Australia and Canada. His background has included working at a bistro in Sydney that focussed on sustainability and zero-waste, which are elements he’s brought into the Fish&Forest o ering. The move to Grape Lane is scheduled for this summer, so Absolutely sat down with the chef to discover more.
Q Why was now the right time to move to a new location for Fish&Forest?
A I think with most things, it’s never the right time, but you can’t turn down a great opportunity. When moving into Micklegate with Fish&Forest, the country had just gone into its first lockdown for example. Now with the relocation to Grape Lane, an iconic spot in the centre of town, you can’t pass that up. It also felt right for us at Fish&Forest, we were almost out growing the building at Micklegate.
“I HAVE ALWAYS HAD HIGH EXPECTATIONS ABOUT WHAT FISH&FOREST COULD ACHIEVE”
Q What was it about the site on Grape Lane that caught your eye?
A My parents own the property (Thirteen Thirty One) and they were thinking of closing up and taking a step back from the chaos of hospitality. Growing up there, learning every section starting from the cellar and settling finally in the kitchen, it means a lot to then have my own business that I created in the building which started my career.
Q Have you now opened the doors to the new location – and if yes, how has it gone so far?
A We haven’t yet moved to Grape Lane, but the premises in Micklegate has been transformed into Notes Wine Bar and it is going really well so far. A few creases still to iron out, but we’ve received fantastic feedback from customers and are keeping busy. It’s something we’ve wanted to do for a while, especially in the location as there’s some great independent restaurants and cafes where a wine bar complements nicely.
STEPHEN ANDREWS
Q Is there anything else that will be di erent?
A Once we move into Grape Lane, we will have a menu with eight starters this time. Still four mains and four desserts, but this way the customers can dine the way they’d like, whether it’s small plates or your classic à la carte.
Q What were your ambitions when you first opened?
A I’ve always had high expectations about what Fish&Forest could achieve. Moving into a bigger venue means we have the
capacity to refine our skills, remain detail oriented and focus on our sustainability and no waste ideals. We want to use the extra space for curing and fermenting so we don’t have food waste. We then want to use those cures for both Fish&Forest and Notes, so again nothing is leftover.
Q How key is Yorkshire produce to what you do?
A Our menu is decided based on the fruit and vegetables we can source locally. Most people laugh when I say that, but we want to highlight what we
“OUR FOCUS IS ON SIMPLE THINGS DONE WELL AND IT SPEAKS VOLUMES”
can do with such great produce. Our focus is on simple things done well and it speaks volumes. Protein is decided last usually as it depends what we can get in on the day – it keeps us on our toes as well as having to be creative.
Q What kind of dishes can we expect on the menu over the summer?
A Fresh, vibrant, punchy, lively, but most importantly ‘Steved’.
Q Is there a particular dish you are loving right now – and if so, why?
A We love using the indoor konro BBQ for cooking our fish. For example, we’ve had plaice, with a grenobloise style sauce (been ‘Steved’ of course), and then we get some local gooseberries and it’s just summer on a plate.
Q Do you have further ambitions for Fish&Forest in the future?
A We want to be one of the best restaurants in York and we aim to be one per cent better everyday, which keeps us level and looking ahead. We are lucky enough to have regulars who support us every step of the way, so we are always thankful for our customers. The long term goal, which we know would be hard work, is to achieve a green star in the future.

SHAPING the FUTURE
How Coppergate Clinic in York is leading the way when it comes to plastic surgery
Founder and clinic director Nick Rhodes has carefully selected a team of nationally-renowned plastic surgeons who work collaboratively to enable the best surgical outcomes for Coppergate’s patients in York.
The patient care is exemplary, as both their outstanding CQC award and countless Trustpilot reviews can attest to. The small, caring, and discrete Coppergate team ensures the care each patient receives is specific to them right from first contact to final discharge.
Innovative techniques allow most procedures to be performed on a day-case basis, with the vast majority of patients recovering in the comfort of their own homes, however overnight stays both within the clinic and at their luxurious step-down facility are available too.
The clinic has a strong association with the BAAPS, and hosts regular training conferences as well as partaking in the nationally-accredited plastic and cosmetic surgery mentorship scheme. Here, Absolutely Yorkshire speaks to Nick to find out more about the Coppergate approach.
Q How is plastic surgery in the private sector changing in the UK?
A With an increasing number of plastic surgeons setting up their own independent clinics throughout the UK, it is no longer necessary for patients to attend large corporate private hospitals for plastic surgery.
At Coppergate Clinic, we have created a boutique style hospital service dedicated exclusively to plastic surgery and the provision of a highly personal and discrete
NICK RHODES
patient experience. Our independent status means that there are no restrictions when it comes to investing in equipment, allowing us to adopt the newest techniques for our patients and ensuring their safety.
Q What makes Coppergate Clinic so unique?
A We are a small, family run and highly dedicated team that deliver one-to-one patient care and the same team handle every patient throughout – patients are greeted by a familiar and reassuring face each visit. Every sta member is extremely knowledgeable about their niche and can answer any questions that may arise.
“Patients are at the centre of everything we do. The level of wraparound care we provide is exemplary”
We also have a team of aestheticians and therapists working alongside our surgeons both pre and post operatively to enhance outcomes. This includes at home skin care regimes using Obagi or Dermaquest products, along with in-clinic laser resurfacing, micro-needling with Exosomes, radiofrequency, Hydrafacial, Skinstorm deep cleansing facial, chemical peels, Endermologie lymphatic drainage and a host of skin conditioning injectables, such as polynucleotides and Profhilo.
Q Where do your clients travel from?
A We live in a digital world so the traditional model of surgeons only treating patients from their locality has altered. Itis now a worldwide stage and as a result we have clients from every corner of the globe. We are lucky that York is so accessible and often patients stay longer to enjoy their recovery in this historic city. Our reputation is mainly based on word of mouth recommendation and whilst we, like mostbusinesses, need to be visible on social media platforms, it is personal recommendation that is most important to us and our clientele. We are wholeheartedly patient-orientated, and each patient is cared for individually, on a highly personal level, with total privacy.
Q How would you advise patients to find the right surgeon?
A Personally, I would only visit a plastic surgeon who is BAAPS accredited and on a specialist register. I think photos can sometimes be misleading so I would want to hear about real patients’ real experiences, which is one of the reasons we subscribe to Trustpilot.
Q What is the ethos of the Coppergate Clinic?
A Patients are the centre of everything we do. Not just in terms of their result, but the level of wraparound care we provide is exemplary. The surgeons work collaboratively not competitively. We are committed to providing our patients with the most advanced and up-to-date techniques and therefore encourage our surgeons to travel to international centres of excellence to hone their skills further within their specialist areas of interest. We are proud to be a host centre for the BAAPs mentorship scheme, training the next generation.

Neck pain is a common 21st century ailment, but expert spine consultant Dan Fagan says help is at hand
Apain in the neck is no joke. A damaged disc resulting in inflammation around the nerve can lead to further complications, such as tingling, numbness, and even weakness in the arm or hand. And if physiotherapy or chiropractic therapy hasn’t helped you, there’s a very good chance that a simple injection or surgery will.
Expert spine consultant Dan Fagan is one of very few spinal surgeons in Yorkshire and the North East who has a wealth of experience in this type of neck surgery. “I’ve seen many patients with this condition, and surgical outcomes, where physiotherapy hasn’t fixed the problem, are very good,” he says. “Neck pain can affect your ability to work, to enjoy sports, and just live your daily life. Many patients are choosing to self-pay and be treated privately for things like slipped discs because it’s much quicker, procedures are less invasive, and recovery is much faster.”
Physiotherapy is often the first course of action when someone is experiencing neck pain – most often due to a trapped nerve caused by a slipped disc. When this fails to relieve the problem, the next step might be injections around the root nerve to ascertain what is causing the pain. In 70 per cent of instances, this settles down the inflammation. However, where the pain continues and is having an impact on health and quality of life, an operation may bring the relief needed to get back to a full life without pain.
Dan explains that it is usually the C5 and C6 vertebrae that are affected, and he specialises in two distinct procedures – disc replacement, and fusion of the vertebrae –which are fully discussed with each patient to find the best course of action for them.
Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is the traditional procedure where the damaged disc is removed and replaced with a lozenge-shaped cage shaped like the disc, along with some artificial bone graft that, over time, fuses the two vertebrae together.
As technology has moved on, Dan also offers Total Disc Replacement. In this procedure, rather than doing a fusion of the vertebrae, the disc itself is replaced with an artificial one that mimics the natural disc and helps to protect the rest of the neck from further wear and tear.
In most instances, the procedure takes between one and two hours, with the patient remaining in hospital overnight for observation. After that, they can resume normal life within a couple of weeks, although Dan warns against rushing back to work too quickly.
“Generally, following the operation, people feel so well that they don’t rest long enough,” he says. “But the worst position, post-surgery, is a forward-leaning position. Many of my patients are busy people who want to keep themselves occupied, so I might encourage them to try something new, like learning another language during their recovery period!”
Dan has his own private practice –SpineArt, based in Yarm – and also works from Woodlands Hospital, Darlington, Nuffield Tees Hospital, Stockton, and runs a clinic in Harrogate, seeing patients from across the North East and Yorkshire.
“Although I do get referrals, many of my patients have either been told that they need a disc replacement, or have researched it themselves, but are struggling to get anything done. I can offer a further opinion, and can arrange the surgery for them, if that is what is going to help them,” he explains.
If you would like to arrange a consultation, please contact Dan Fagan’s secretary, Beverley Johnston, on 07539 330360 or email secretary@spineart.org. Read more at www.spineart.org

CLOSER TO NATURE
Biomimetic materials that literally mimic nature are revolutionising dentistry and a Ribble Valley practice is one of the leading pioneers
Always keeping ahead of the industry, leading private dental practice Renovo is one of the first practices in the UK that has fully adapted the very latest techniques that can successfully restore teeth by using materials that mimic nature and the natural tooth. Their approach has seen them win Practice of the Year North West at The Dentistry Awards 2023 and winner of Referral Practice North at the Private Dentistry Awards 2023.
Biomimetic dentistry is revolutionising the way dentists can restore and repair teeth as Dr Usman Riaz of Ribble Valley-based Renovo explains: “This is micro-invasive dentistry. We can preserve as much of the tooth structure as possible by using scientifically developed, bio-compatible metal-free materials that act, feel and look just like our natural teeth.”
AVOIDING ROOT CANALS
“Biomimetic dentistry can help reduce your need for root canal therapy by up to 90 per cent. With immediate dentin sealing and resin coating, biomimetic dentistry gives pulps a vital chance to heal, helping maintain their natural resilience and extend their life. This is at the forefront of our core values,” adds Dr Riaz.
These latest advances in dental technology are set to change the way we view restorative dentistry. For teeth that have been damaged, porcelain crowns and veneers have, in the past, been the solution. However, more recent developments in bonding technology and the bio-materials used, have given dentists a new alternative, usually with no tooth removal.
PAIN-FREE LONGERLASTING TEETH
Biomimetic restorations treat the causes of
symptoms (cracks or caries near the pulp) so they do not result in sensitivity or pain after restoration: “Biomimetic techniques also restore the tooth in a way that mimics a tooth’s natural structure, preventing cracks around the restoration,” says Dr Riaz. “Finally, the advanced adhesive techniques used in a biomimetic restoration have been shown to keep a restoration bonded for over 20 years, and counting, so the days of crowns or fillings falling out can be a thing of the past!”
SCIENCE-BACKED TREATMENT
Biomimetic dentistry is more technique sensitive and requires more detailed steps than traditional restorative practices. With Renovo’s approach, the dentists and clinical team understand the science, or what they call the ‘why’ behind each step in their biomimetic restoration. The steps take the guesswork out of treatment planning, leaving clinicians and patients feeling confident in every restoration.
“The mouth is more than just a gatewayit's a mirror reflecting our overall health”
IMPROVED AESTHETICS
“Biomimetic dentistry is general dentistry and can be applied to every case we see at Renovo. The concepts of conserving tooth structure, saving pulps and superior adhesion will serve as a more predictable foundation of our work,” explains Dr Riaz.
“We can change, reshape and enhance teeth with these new materials. The biomimetic materials are also reinforcing teeth – it is a totally di erent concept to what we have seen previously.
“Specialist techniques are used in biomimetic dentistry and the whole team have had advanced training,” says Dr Riaz. “For us, using non-invasive techniques and preserving teeth has always been something we routinely believe in and practice, so biomimetic dentistry sits really well with that belief.
“It’s the way dentistry should be done – to save and conserve teeth has always been our gold standard.”
ZERO TOOTH LOSS MAXIMUM AESTHETICS
For nervous patients the biomimetic approach revolutionises the way they view a dental appointment: “For those people, this is an amazing development as the approach is to conserve tooth tissue using minimally invasive techniques. No anaesthetic is needed as there is zero tooth removal,” says Dr Riaz.
While biomimetic dentistry can help to naturally strengthen and restore damaged teeth, it is also perfect for cosmetic procedures. “With the latest biomimetic materials, we get incredible results and in many cases, it is much quicker too, as it often involves just one visit to the dentist,” says Dr Riaz
“These treatment concepts and philosophy are popular in the US and Europe, but it has taken time to develop in the UK. We have had to understand the materials and perfect new techniques so we can carry out dentistry at a di erent level.”
HEALTHIER TEETH, HEALTHIER YOU
By removing all toxicity and inflammation from the mouth, biological dentistry helps restore vitality, balance and systemic health. “What we put in our mouth and more importantly, the teeth themselves, has a crucial role to play in our overall health. Gut health begins in the mouth. It’s more than just a gateway – it’s a mirror reflecting our overall health.”

EVOLUTION of HEALTHCARE
Huddersfield Hospital continues to be at the forefront of clinical innovation with their new enhanced care pathway
Huddersfield Hospital, located on Birkby Hall Road, has been caring for patients for over 50 years. As a private hospital, they treat patients who fund their own treatment or are supported by private medical insurance. They also support their colleagues in the NHS, treating and caring for patients who are referred to them by the local NHS trusts. They are proud to be playing their part to reduce long wait times in the region. Huddersfield Hospital continues to be at the forefront of clinical innovation, developing an enhanced care pathway for joint replacement patients, allowing
them to go home on the same day as their operation. This is a significant development, as some patients may stay in hospital for up to a week with traditional joint replacement surgery. This is available for all of their patients, regardless of whether they are paying for themselves or have been referred on the NHS.
“Enhanced recovery involves optimising the pathway for the patient, from preassessment to discharge. Looking at the very minutia of touchpoints in intervention, we ensure every element of it is optimised to the very best surgical outcomes,” says Gareth Hobson, Executive Director.
The enhanced recovery pathway reduces the risk of medical complications such as infection and the need for
further surgical intervention treatment, allowing patients to be in charge of their own recovery. Patients go through a comprehensive pre-assessment to ensure that the care they receive meets their individual needs, and the process includes a review by one of their anaesthetists.
Getting the right support after your treatment is essential to ensuring the best health outcomes. Huddersfield Hospital’s enhanced recovery pathway has been specifically designed to allow for early mobilisation with an expert specialist from their very own physiotherapy team to tailored pain management pathways that aim to reduce the side e ects from common pain medications. The teams focus on you and ensure that your private hospital experience gets you the outcome you need. Their commitment is to provide patients with outstanding quality care, and they are proud of and strive for the best outcomes and experience. The enhanced care approach is just one example of where they are making good on that commitment.
Employing these specifically created pathways, they’ve noticed, on average, their patients are back doing daily activities faster. Whether it’s work, playing with the grandchildren, or reconnecting with a hobby, you can rest assured they will build your care around your needs.

This recent project by Charlotte Findlater saw the designer tackle a master bedroom and a huge en-suite that felt very cold. COUNTRY
Life
Exploring a stunning house set in 12 acres of private grounds in Darlington
Something a little di erent for Absolutely this month, we have ventured into County Durham to have a look around a country house that has come on to the market. Hurworth Moor House is a magnificent period family home, set in grounds extending to approximately 12 acres and dating back to 1890. It o ers beautifully appointed accommodation, arranged over three light-filled floors. The property displays elegant and ornate styling and period detailing throughout, such as original mouldings, cast-iron fireplaces, panelling, oak staircase and doors, alongside modern fittings to create a thoroughly attractive property.
Hurworth Moor is steeped in tradition, not least of which is the new year carving of the date on the wall of the Loggia, situated beneath the terrace, dating back to the 1890s. The property was a gift on the occasion of the marriage of Edward Lloyd Pease of Pierremont and Blanche Helen Pease, the daughter of Sir Joseph Whitwell Pease of Hutton Hall. In 1889 the then well known and respected local architects, Clark and Moscrop, invited tenders for the building
of a mansion advertising that only reputable firms employing time served craftsmen should apply.
Built in mellow brick under a pantiled roof, the property has undergone a programme of modernisation during the current owners’ 25-year tenure, including the addition of a beautiful orangery and triple garage, and the installation of double glazing and underfloor heating to many rooms, creating a comfortable family home.
The house has a welcoming entrance hall with tiled flooring and intricately patterned leaded windows, while the inner reception hall includes an open fireplace with oak surround, and an impressive original oak staircase. Most of the principal reception rooms overlook the formal terrace and lawns and include the large drawing room with its bay windows enjoying the south/west views over the gardens, French doors and open fireplace, while there is also a family room with dual aspect garden views and corner log burner, a library with bespoke fitted shelving and secret door through to the utility room, a snooker room with access to the paved courtyard and a well-proportioned formal dining room with parquet flooring, original panelling and an open fireplace with copper surround and triple aspect views to enjoy the gardens.
Both the orangery, with underfloor heating and log burner, and the conservatory provide light and airy living spaces with east or west views across the garden. Also on the ground floor, the spacious kitchen includes hand painted cream fitted units to base and wall level, a central island with sink and Franke boiling tap, Oil Aga and separate oven with induction hob, granite worktops and integrated microwave, dishwasher and fridge-freezer, as well as French doors opening to the central courtyard.
“THERE
ARE TWO STABLE BLOCKS, TACK ROOM, HAY STORE, VEGETABLE GARDEN AND GREENHOUSE WITH GRAPEVINE”
grounds include a central paved courtyard, paved terracing and gravel pathways, as well as fine trees, beautifully maintained lawns and border shrubs and hedgerows. The lawns on the west side of the property lead down to the Ha-Ha. The south facing gravelled terrace has a balustrade and steps down to the flat lawned area of the garden, leading to a peaceful pond with Monet bridge. Beyond the garden and o ering uninterrupted views to the distant hills there are extensive fields and paddocks ideal for exercising horses or grazing livestock, extending to approx 41 acres with a further 11 acres of woodland.
There are two cellars, one accessed from the hallway has two rooms, one which is currently used as a wine cellar and the second cellar accessed from the courtyard.
There are five double bedrooms on the first floor, as well as a study with bespoke shelving and storage, which could be used as a further bedroom if required. The principal bedroom enjoys dual aspect south and west facing views over the gardens and benefits from a dressing room with fitted wardrobes and an en-suite bathroom with twin sinks and separate bath and shower unit. The first floor also has a family bathroom and a guest bathroom, a shower room, box room and laundry room, heated by the AGA. Two staircases lead to separate second floor areas, one leading to two further double bedrooms and the second to three useful attic rooms, o ering the potential for additional bedrooms, o ce space or useful storage.
Heading outside, the property is approached via a long tree-lined driveway through wrought-iron gates, which leads to the property with a gravel driveway to the front, branching o to the garage and stable blocks. The property has a triple garage with electric doors with a useful room above, which is ideal as an o ce or for home storage.
Additionally, there are two stable blocks with six looseboxes, tack room and separate hay store, a vegetable garden and greenhouse with grapevine. The gardens and
Hurworth Moor House lies in a peaceful rural setting just three miles from Darlington town centre. The village of Hurworth-on-Tees sits on a particularly pretty stretch of the River Tees that is less than two miles away, and o ers everyday amenities including a local shop, public houses, as well as a primary school and the Rockcli e Hall Hotel, Spa and Country Club.

Working from home requires its own approach to decoration. Here’s how to create an impressive backdrop
By KATHERINE ORMEROD
F“Sometimes I’ll write at the kitchen counter, other times, I crave sitting softer on a sofa”
or all the talk of home o ces, the reality is that the average house size in the UK is 729 sq ft. That will generally translate to three or four smallish rooms – so even before the shift in working habits, a certain degree of multi-use was necessary for most. While homes are generally far roomier across the States (at a staggering average of 2,273 sq ft), this belies the realities in many of its cities (New York City stands at 983 sq ft, Washington DC at 932 sq ft). If you live in or close to a metropolis and you have a family in an average-sized home, your workspace is likely to double up as a social space. But while you may not have the option of an optimally
balanced ergonomic chair or sound-proofing, that doesn’t mean that you can’t present a professional environment that helps you get into the zone when it comes to remote working.
The key principles for any good working space from a décor perspective are a) the best light possible, b) finding a low tra c zone – areas that don’t serve as thoroughfares through the rooms, and c) creating a backdrop that conveys your taste in a way that isn’t visually jarring or distracting.
The shift to remote working has brought countless benefits and for many of us it couldn’t have come sooner. The removal of the commute, the additional flexibility to manage caring commitments… the peace and quiet to form a sentence away from watercooler reviews
of last night’s Love Island. But we cannot deny that hybrid working arrangements have ratcheted up the pressure on our homescapes.
Whether it’s having to listen to a flatmate or partner’s calls or find privacy away from the Peppa Pig theme tune, finding a place where you can concentrate e ectively is vital to the new world working order. Instead of one fixed spot, I’m personally a home workspace hopper. Sometimes I’ll write at the kitchen counter, other times, I crave sitting softer on a sofa. My ‘desks’ aren’t all photogenic or set up with the perfect 90-degree elbow angle, but I’d wager that the majority of people reading this are similar and actually enjoy that flexibility.
But the one work environment setting that I am resolutely consistent about is where I take
my video calls, simply because it matters. You may have seen the homescreen critique accounts on Twitter and Instagram or the ‘You Are Your Backdrop’ memes circulating. While this may seem a little extreme, early research has proven the importance of the image you project of your home in a career context. A recent survey of 1,500 respondents showed that candidates on a job interview conducted via video calls were judged harshly for background clutter, whereas the presence of plants and an organised bookshelf in the background persuaded those surveyed of a candidate’s reliability and professionalism. Your background has the potential to reveal a lot about your personality without you even realising it and that can have a big impact on professional perception. While it may be tempting to use the fake digital backgrounds, available for instant download, or even blur your hinterland, I would advise explicitly against it – they look creepy and just make you wonder what the hell is hiding back there. Far better to see it as an opportunity, rather than something to circumnavigate. As a freelancer, I have to make a good first impression several times a day. That good impression will simply
Consider the objects that will fill your screen as props
not be made from the bed or with the dirty dishes piled up in the sink behind me. Your background has the power to humanise you, adding another layer to your story. You should think of it as a visual complement to your CV and, for that reason alone, it pays to invest time and resources into getting it right.
Starting with the basics, as mentioned above, one of the most important considerations is lighting. The very best lighting comes from the direction of your computer, so ideally you will sit for a video call facing a light source – if not a window, then the area of the room with best indirect natural light. If you only have the option of a windowless space, consider investing in a ring light. Keep in mind that if you sit between a light source and your screen, you will find yourself eerily backlit and your colleagues may not be able to see your features.
The whole point of video calling is to see your expressions and get as close to real face time as possible, so always do your best to present a clear image of yourself. The intensity of light is something that décor can help with in the form of window dressings – ideal if you are looking to soften a blazing attic skylight, where home o ces are often located. Harsh
lighting can be just as tricky as low light. When creating a backdrop, consider what values you want your colleagues to take from your home space. Would you like to be perceived as hardworking? Au fait with contemporary art? Personable and approachable? Consider the objects that will fill your screen as props to convey those messages. One of the best ways to showcase those props is with shelving. Colour and pattern can bring further interest to your Zoom room, and both paint and wallpaper are great options – though less is more. For renters, removable, temporary wallpaper is a great option as it will cover all manner of sins. If you’re nervous, start small and go with an easy scalloped shelf, which you can decorate with some personal (though not provocative!) objects. I’m often asked where I get all my bits for shelves and cabinets and there isn’t an easy answer because I get them from everywhere. I never stop looking for beautiful objects, in charity shops, at markets, at airports abroad, on the high street. It’s about pieces that you are personally drawn to, not what is fashionable. I love collections of similar items, though it’s probably best to keep the theme to yourself or you might find you only receive dog mugs for every Christmas ad infinitum. Stripy ceramics are a good example of something that it is easy to purchase and look so cool together. Shapes hewn in di erent shades of marble, interesting candlesticks in pastel tones. Whatever you choose, keep your eye out wherever you go. Eclectic, personal mixtures of print, colour and texture, with pieces you’ve handpicked to create collections of objects that tell your unique story.
Our showrooms across Yorkshire keep a wide variety of stock ready for you to take away today. We o er a range of in-store displays to inspire, and our friendly and professional teams o er a free design service to help you create the best bathroom for you.

Exploring the evolving world of esports for young people
By JENN HARRIS
GAME
ON
Esports, or electronic sports, have taken the world by storm in recent years. What started as a niche hobby for a few dedicated gamers has now become a global phenomenon, with millions of fans tuning in to watch their favourite players compete in virtual battles. For young people today, esports o ers a unique opportunity to connect with others who share their passion for gaming. Unlike traditional sports, which require physical prowess and athleticism, esports can level the playing field, allowing anyone with a computer or gaming console to compete at the highest levels. Essentially, esports is organised competitive video gaming, which is always human versus human. These games are based on skill and there is no option to pay a fee to enhance play. Esports are video games chosen by the community, with tournaments being played online or live for prize pools or medals. They’re gender neutral and, depending on the game, players compete as an individual or in teams, with the games being viewed via spectator mode. Pro-gamers (age 13+) usually specialise in one game. Right now, in the UK, esports is not o cially recognised as a sport, but as a game under the remit of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) and is not a rival to traditional sports.
Beyond professional gaming
One of the most exciting aspects of esports is its rapidly evolving nature. New games are constantly being developed, each o ering a fresh challenge and the chance to showcase new skills. From first-person shooters like Counterstrike: Global O ensive to battle royale games like Fortnite, there is a game for every type of player. Of course, esports’ growing popularity isn’t a secret, and we can only expect its popularity to continue to grow. With the introduction of new career paths and professional development, young people are rapidly realising they can make a career out of
“Young people are rapidly realising they can make a career out of a hobby they love”
a hobby they love. This is also going beyond just becoming a professional player, with many players looking to pursue other careers within the wider esports industry as well.
However, the world of esports is not without its challenges. As with any competitive field, esports can be intense and demanding, requiring hours of practice and dedication to reach the top. Additionally, the industry is still relatively young and faces issues such as player burnout, lack of diversity, and concerns about the impact of gaming on mental health. Despite these challenges, the world of esports continues to grow and evolve, o ering young people a new way to connect, compete, and pursue their passions. Whether that means a casual player looking to improve their skills or a dedicated fan cheering on their favourite team, esports has great appeal for many young people today.
Getting involved in esports is also a great way for young people to develop a wide range of di erent skills such as leadership, communication, dexterity, motivation, responsibility, flexibility, teamwork, cyber skills, strategy, problem solving, critical thinking and many more. These transferable soft skills can translate to everyday life, helping young people to navigate real life situations and challenges with greater confidence and ease.
New skills and a raft of career prospects
The esports industry also o ers an abundance of opportunities when it comes to career pathways. Because esports provides young people with so many transferable skills, there is a huge opportunity to branch out into a number of roles. When it comes to careers within the esports industry, this goes beyond being a professional player, including all of the wider aspects that go into organising and supporting tournaments and events etc. Some of the career pathways within esports include marketing, sales, event management, broadcast/ production, video editing, coaching, cyber security, software engineering, software development and more. As the esports industry continues to grow and expand, there will be many more new opportunities to learn about and explore. With esports becoming more accepted and mainstream, and with new technological advancements, increased investment and sponsorship, esports education and career pathways, not to mention new game genres on the horizon, there’s always something new to discover. Whether it’s honing strategic thinking and problemsolving skills, mastering time management and discipline or acquiring new abilities for various career paths, young people will always find fresh and exciting areas to pursue.

ART for all
Craven
Museum has been recognised for
its work to engage children and the wider community as a whole
Craven Museum at Skipton Town Hall has won £15,000 as one of five finalists for the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2024. The overall winner, Young V&A – Victoria and Albert Museum in London – was presented with a prize of £120,000 by Vick Hope, a broadcaster and a judge for Art Fund Museum of the Year 2024, at a ceremony at the National Gallery in London on 10 July. North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for culture, arts and housing, Cllr Simon Myers, says: “I am thrilled that Craven Museum is a finalist for the Art Fund Museum of the Year. This prestigious recognition highlights the hard work and dedication of the museum’s team and its vital role in our community. Being
shortlisted among much larger institutions underscores the importance of cultural spaces like this in enriching our lives.
“Craven Museum has cross-party support from North Yorkshire Council and we are immensely proud of its achievements. We look forward to seeing it continue to inspire and engage.
Congratulations to everyone involved.”
Craven Museum is located in the Grade II-listed Skipton Town Hall, a modern multi-arts cultural hub on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. The venue also includes an exhibition gallery, historic concert hall, education and community spaces which all work with the museum to enrich and expand the cultural experiences on o er.
The museum was recognised as the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum 2023 and Best Accessible Museum 2023. It was judged one of the top three museums
for access out of more than 2,000 UK museums and heritage sites. Craven Museum programmed free or low-cost activities or events every day of the 2023 school holidays for families, in recognition of the current cost of living crisis.
Between 2022 and 2023, 115 artists displayed work in the museum’s exhibition gallery, and eight community groups created displays in the community cases. The museum welcomed 156,391 visitors in the 2022 to 2023 period, an increase of about 56,000 visitors compared to the same period the previous year.
Art Fund annually shortlists five outstanding museums for Museum of the Year. The 2024 edition recognises inspiring projects from autumn 2022 through to winter 2023, with audiences and communities at their heart – with a particular focus on community engagement, sustainable ways of working, and demonstration of ambition by reinventing what it means to be ‘the best’ museum for the audiences of today and tomorrow.
Craven Museum was one of five finalists. The other finalists were Dundee Contemporary Arts in Dundee, Manchester Museum and National Portrait Gallery in London, along with the winner, Young V&A – Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The 2024 judging panel, chaired by Art Fund director Jenny Waldman, included Anupam Ganguli, the finance director for Historic Royal Palaces, broadcaster Vick Hope, artist Tania Kovats and Sir John Leighton, a former Director-General for the National Galleries of Scotland. The judges visited each of the finalists to inform their decision-making.

Frank
Malcolm, founder of Malcolm Associates,
on finding a niche in the property industry
Q Can you give us a bit of background to your business?
A Malcolm Associates was established in 2021. Having been a partner within a large firm of surveyors, I formed Malcolm Associates to o er a more personalised bespoke service to clients. Initially working out of Glasgow, we soon realised that the demand for HNW and UHNW services were being requested from London and swiftly moved into that geographical area, albeit we now cover the whole of the UK.
Q From day one, how did you want to be di erent?
A The drive to speed up turnaround through standardisation of reports didn’t always suit my clients and I felt that a more individual and bespoke service was welcomed by clients especially at the high end of the market.
Q Can you sum up the services you o er?
A We o er a full range of property consultancy services in both residential and commercial. Services range from Traditional Building Surveying, such as pre-acquisition
surveys, expert witness and defects analysis to Project Management and contract administration services. We have seen a huge rise in requests for Value at Risk assessments as clients try and re-assess insurance rebuild costs amidst growing costs with Brexit, Covid and increasing labour costs.
Q Can you tell us about your Project Management services?
A Malcolm Associates takes pride in its comprehensive Project Management & Cost Consultancy services, o ering a spectrum of expertise to guide clients through every phase of their projects. With a commitment to excellence, the consultancy’s services encompass both pre-contract and postcontract phases, ensuring a seamless and well-managed construction process. We have recently been working for a client on a residential refurbishment project which included full electrical rewire, underfloor heating, ornate plaster work, high end fixtures, fittings and finishes. Work included a new kitchen, games room, cinema room and swimming pool refurbishment. We also
undertook design works for garden and external landscaping, project value circa £2.5m.
Q How do you work in the commercial sector?
A We have carried out many pre-acquisitions on commercial properties, condition surveys and also worked with landlords and tenants in terms of leased properties. We can prepare schedules of conditions and schedules of dilapidations. We also have project managed fit-out works and refurbishment works for clients. Our work has covered hotels, o ces, retail and warehousing.
Q Why should our readers come to you for advice?
A We o er a personal and bespoke service to our clients and strive to provide informative reporting with our focus on the client’s requirements. We have a good client retention with repeat business and recommendations. Our existing clients vary from private individuals, large corporations, national retailers to 5-star hotels.

Re:Pair LAB
Trinity Leeds launches an innovative sustainable retail concept
Anew sustainable fashion concept from Trinity Leeds will see up-and-coming designers showcased alongside local fashion brands and secondhand sellers this summer. Re:Pair Lab is a new initiative from Trinity Leeds owner Landsec, partnering with Leeds Beckett University and Wayne Hemingway – co-founder of HemingwayDesign, who have been at the forefront of bringing sustainable retail concepts into the mainstream, such as the Charity Super.Mkt initiative.
Re:Pair Lab is an initiative promoting sustainability, creativity, and community. Over a 12-week pop up, it will feature rotating residencies from Leeds fashion students, local designers and fashion businesses, who will collaborate with charity retailer Emmaus to repair and transform clothing that would otherwise end up in landfill, into new garments and collections.
The in-house designers will also sell their own creations, alongside curated rails from second-hand and sustainable sellers from Leeds who will have the chance to build upon their online success on websites such as DePop and Vinted with a physical presence.
Re:Pair LAB has been designed to support Leeds-based creatives and small businesses by providing a platform to test out ideas without the stresses of significant financial investment. Re:Pair LAB is a physical space for up-and-coming designers and sustainable businesses to innovate, collaborate, and thrive. Hands-on creative workshops will also
be held to educate and empower guests to learn DIY techniques for altering and upcycling clothing for themselves.
Wayne Hemingway says: “Re:Pair Lab gives designer makers and secondhand sellers a place to 'have a go' in a collaborative space in a high footfall, popular city centre location, whilst pairing designer-makers with brilliant local charities to repair and remake second-hand items, and creating a vibrant community hub through free workshops and events. This is purposeful, modern city centre retail at its most meaningful.”
Re:Pair Lab will be located at Trinity Leeds until 8 September, on Wednesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 7pm, and Sundays from 11am to 5pm
