Yorkshire YATTER
Lisa Byrne takes a trip back in time and looks at how our county’s history is still shaping the future
Irecently underwent past life regression therapy. I have always felt a deep connection to history, particularly the medieval period, and was curious to know why. I was taken on a journey by a wonderful therapist where I found myself in the middle of a brutal battlefield. My name was Edmund and it appeared that I was a young noble knight killed during the violent period that was the War of the Roses. During the session I described in detail what I was wearing – which later transpired to be exact colours from the House of York. It was a truly enlightening experience.
Having grown up in a county which boasts a highly colourful past, it’s no wonder that I love history. At school I even flirted with the idea of becoming an archaeologist – no doubt helped by the launch of the JORVIK Viking Centre, which this year celebrates its 40th anniversary. But sadly, this didn’t last long.
JORVIK – which became a world-famous attraction – o ered something I had not
encountered before, a museum where you didn’t just look at ancient artefacts, but took an immersive tour around what York would have been like over a millennia ago.
Under nondescript modern buildings in the centre of the city a treasure trove of Viking timber, textiles, animal bones, and pottery were uncovered – items which normally rot away were only preserved due to the rich underground of moist peaty layers.
Professional excavators, students across the globe and even inmates of HM prisons on day release helped with site investigations. I even volunteered during school holidays, but soon realised that I didn’t have the patience to spend hours bent double pawing through heaps of soil. I hoped to discover a priceless Viking jewel or medieval coins, but only came across shards of pottery and animal bones.
Which is why I have huge admiration for the archaeologists who spend their lives shifting through tons of earth across the county hoping to uncover more about our history. This back-breaking toil has helped us discover incredible stories concerning our ancestors and recreates their lives for generations to come.
Nowadays, there’s fantastic technology such as GPR (ground penetrating radar), which allows experts to peer below the surface of the ground. Perhaps this means we can finally discover if there’s a Roman amphitheatre in York. I am convinced that due to the huge fortress that existed in the city from 71AD for three centuries, the Romans must have built a large colosseum here. My instinct is that it lies under the Museum Gardens, but only time and thankfully not too much back-breaking work will tell.

CURTAIN comes down
She eld Theatres announces Robert Hastie’s final season as he steps down after eight years as artistic director
Robert Hastie joined She eld Theatres as artistic director in July 2016, having previously started his career as an actor by performing on the Crucible stage in Edward Bond’s Lear. His time in post has seen She eld Theatres produce 72 new productions and welcome hundreds of guest productions across its three auditoria. Theatre made in the city has been experienced by hundreds of thousands of audience members, in She eld and around the world.
“It has been an honour to lead this wonderful group of theatres for the last eight years, and to work alongside such a committed, talented and kind collection of people,” Roberts says. “There is nowhere like it – the range of theatre spaces, and the multiplicity of local and national relationships She eld Theatres enjoys, make this place a whole
“THE PRIVILEGE OF WORKING IN A CITY THAT LOVES ITS THEATRE IS SOMETHING I WILL NEVER FORGET”
cultural ecosystem, and it’s been a joy and an education to work at its heart.
“I have loved working here,” he adds with a smile. “I will miss crossing Tudor Square and bumping into actors on a break from rehearsal, young artists on their way to an R&D workshop in our Talent Development space, lines of schoolkids queuing noisily for a matinee in the Lyceum, passers-by keen to stop me and tell me what they thought of last night’s show in the Crucible. The immense privilege of working in a city that loves its theatre is something I will never forget.”
The roster for his final season is mightily impressive. Chariots of Fire opens the season in the Crucible, on 6 July.
Adapted by Mike Bartlett from the 1981 film based on the remarkable events of the 1924 Olympics and directed by Robert Hastie himself, this production marks the 100th anniversary of the true stories of Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, and their record-breaking achievements.
Then follows A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen. A powerful drama exploring a happy home built on false foundations, this new adaptation is by Chris Bush and directed by Elin Schofield – who worked together on SCISSORS in She eld Theatre’s 50th anniversary production ROCK / PAPER / SCISSORS, and opens from 21 September.
And looking a little further ahead, this festive season She eld Theatres produce Little Shop of Horrors staged in the Crucible and directed by Amy Hodge (Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World, Henry VIII). This killer rock musical with plenty of bite features the songs Little Shop of Horrors, Suddenly Seymour and Skid Row (Downtown)
This is merely a glance at what is in store for Robert Hastie’s final season. As always, Absolutely Yorkshire will be covering some of the fantastic shows and it’s clear that Robert will be missed. “For now, I’m looking forward to a thrilling final season that mixes bold new voices with global classics, risk-taking work for younger audiences with innovative new musical theatre, and family entertainment with chances to get involved in an inclusive participatory programme,” he says. “I’m delighted to fire the starting pistol with a new production of Chariots of Fire, adapted by Mike Bartlett from the iconic film about the Paris 1924 Olympic Games, as we countdown to Paris 2024. It will be an epic way to say goodbye to the stage – the best of its kind in the country – that I’ve been lucky to call home for the last eight years.”

Why we love Scarborough
There’s nothing quite like visiting this picturesque town on the North Sea coast
Scarborough, a coastal town in North Yorkshire, boasts a rich and vibrant history that spans over a thousand years. From its humble beginnings as a small Viking settlement to its transformation into a bustling seaside resort, Scarborough has evolved through numerous stages, each leaving its mark on the town’s character and identity.
The story of Scarborough begins around the 10th century when the Vikings established a small settlement called Skarthaborg, meaning 'stronghold of the rock', atop the cli s overlooking the North Sea. This strategic location provided natural defences and access to the sea, making it an ideal spot for trade. Over time, the settlement grew into a prosperous fishing
village, benefiting from its proximity to the abundant fishing grounds of the North Sea.
In the following centuries, Scarborough continued to thrive, attracting merchants and traders from across Europe. The town’s medieval castle, built in the 12th century by King Henry II, served as a symbol of royal power and played a crucial role in defending the town against various invasions and conflicts.
During the Tudor period, Scarborough gained further prominence as a bustling port and market town. The town’s economy flourished, driven by trade in wool, grain, and other commodities. Scarborough also became known for its mineral springs, which attracted visitors seeking the reputed healing properties of the waters.
In the 17th century, Scarborough’s fortunes took a downturn with the outbreak of the English Civil War. The town su ered damage during the conflict, including the partial destruction of its castle. However,
Scarborough rebounded in the following centuries, thanks in part to the growing popularity of sea bathing as a leisure activity. By the 19th century, Scarborough had emerged as a fashionable seaside resort, attracting wealthy visitors seeking relaxation and entertainment. The town’s golden sands and picturesque cli s became a magnet for tourists, while the development of elegant promenades, gardens, and spa facilities added to its allure.
One of Scarborough’s most famous visitors during this time was Anne Brontë, who found inspiration for her novel Agnes Grey while staying in the town. The novel, published in 1847, provides a glimpse into life in Scarborough during the Victorian era, highlighting its social dynamics and scenic beauty. Scarborough continued to grow and modernise in the 20th century, despite facing challenges such as two world wars
and changing economic conditions. The town’s traditional industries, including fishing and textiles, declined, but tourism remained a vital part of its economy. Today, Scarborough is a vibrant coastal town that blends its rich heritage with modern amenities and attractions.
As Scarborough looks to the future, it remains true to its roots as a place of natural beauty, history, and hospitality. Whether strolling along its sandy beaches, exploring its historic landmarks, or simply enjoying the fresh sea air, visitors to Scarborough are sure to find a warm welcome and a wealth of experiences waiting to be discovered.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO
One of Scarborough’s most prominent landmarks is Scarborough Castle, perched dramatically atop a headland overlooking the North Sea. This medieval fortress, dating back to the 12th century, o ers
breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline and the town below. Visitors can explore the castle’s ruins, learn about its fascinating history through interactive exhibits, and enjoy guided tours that bring its storied past to life.
For those interested in the natural world, Scarborough boasts the Rotunda Museum, a fascinating institution dedicated to geology and archaeology. Housed in a distinctive circular building, the museum showcases a diverse collection of fossils, minerals, and artefacts, including the remains of prehistoric creatures that once roamed the region. Interactive displays and hands-on activities make it an engaging destination for visitors of all ages.
Scarborough’s picturesque seafront is a hub of activity, o ering a myriad of attractions and entertainment options. The South Bay beach, with its golden sands and bustling promenade, is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or enjoying a leisurely stroll along the seafront. Families will delight in the traditional amusement arcades, ice cream parlours, and donkey rides that line the beach, while thrill-seekers can take a spin on the historic cli tramway or enjoy exhilarating water sports such as surfing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
History bu s will find plenty to explore in Scarborough’s old town, with its narrow cobbled streets and historic buildings dating back centuries. The Old Town Trail o ers a fascinating glimpse into the town’s medieval past, taking visitors on a journey through time with stops at landmarks such as St Mary’s Church, the Old Custom House, and the Merchant’s Row. For a taste of Victorian elegance,
“Scarborough's picturesque seafront is a hub of activity, o ering a myriad of attractions”
visitors can wander through the beautifully landscaped gardens of Peasholm Park. This tranquil oasis features ornamental lakes, exotic plants, and winding pathways, as well as a replica naval battle reenactment performed on the park’s boating lake during the summer months.
Nearby, the Scarborough Spa Complex hosts a variety of cultural events and performances throughout the year, including concerts, plays, and comedy shows.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of opportunities to explore Scarborough’s stunning natural surroundings. The
Cleveland Way, a long-distance footpath that stretches for 110 miles along the North Yorkshire coast, passes through Scarborough and o ers breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and rolling countryside. The nearby North York Moors National Park provides further opportunities for hiking, cycling, and wildlife spotting in a pristine natural setting.
In addition to its natural beauty and historic charm, Scarborough is also home to a vibrant arts and cultural scene. The Stephen Joseph Theatre, founded by renowned playwright Alan Ayckbourn,
SCARBOROUGH SPAshowcases a diverse program of drama, comedy, and musical performances yearround. Meanwhile, the Scarborough Art Gallery features an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, and ceramics by local and international artists.
WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK
While Scarborough is renowned for its stunning coastal vistas and rich history, its culinary scene also holds its own charm, o ering a diverse array of dining options that cater to every palate and preference. From traditional fish and chips by the sea to gourmet dining experiences, Scarborough boasts a wide range of restaurants, cafes, and eateries that celebrate local flavours and international cuisines. For those craving a taste of the sea, few places rival Scarborough’s seafood o erings. The town’s location on the North Yorkshire coast ensures a steady supply of fresh fish and shellfish, which are expertly prepared and served at numerous establishments along the seafront. Visitors can indulge in classic dishes such as fish and chips, battered haddock, and seafood platters piled high with prawns, crab, and mussels. Recommended spots include
the Golden Grid, a family-run restaurant known for its generous portions and friendly service, and the Clock Café, which o ers panoramic views of the harbour alongside its delicious seafood fare.
For high end fare, Clark’s Restaurant is a favourite. Opening the doors in 2016, their ethos was to create an intimate and relaxed restaurant with a focus on local produce from North Yorkshire’s coast and countryside. They wanted to visit suppliers and producers daily within walking distance from their kitchen, discussing what’s in season and at its best. They take a brief walk down the hill to the harbour for their freshly landed fish, crab, lobsters and scallops all within a half mile radius of the restaurant, showing that Scarborough shouldn’t just be known for great fish and chips.
The Mayfield, The Plough and The Yew Tree Cafe & Bistro are all situated just outside Scarborough, and are family-owned restaurants/pubs with accommodation which make up The Five Star Collection. The Collection is part of the Yorkshire-based Qdos Entertainment, owned by husband and
wife entrepreneurs, Nick and Sandra Thomas, who live in Scarborough. The Five Star Stays Cottages, The Plough and The Mayfield carry the distinctive Five Star Collection trademark of awardwinning dining, elegant accommodation and a very warm welcome.
Those in search of international flavours will find plenty to tantalise their taste buds in Scarborough. The town’s diverse culinary scene features cuisines from around the world, including Italian, Indian, Thai, and more. For authentic Italian fare, diners can head to Tuscany Too, a cosy trattoria known for its wood-fired pizzas, homemade pasta, and hearty meat dishes. Scarborough is also home to a thriving cafe culture, with numerous charming co ee shops and bakeries dotted throughout the town. Whether you’re in need of a ca eine fix, a sweet treat, or a leisurely brunch, you’ll find plenty of options to choose from. Favourites include Eat Me Café, a quirky spot known for its delicious homemade cakes and pastries, and the Sea View Café, which o ers stunning views of the bay alongside its selection of freshly brewed co ees and teas.
Of course, no visit to Scarborough would be complete without sampling some of the town’s famous sweets and treats. Scarborough has a long-standing tradition of confectionery making, with local shops and stalls o ering an array of tempting goodies, from traditional seaside rock and fudge to handmade chocolates and artisanal ice cream. Be sure to stop by the Harbour Bar, a beloved institution that has been serving up mouthwatering ice cream sundaes and milkshakes since 1945
Local PRIDE
Whilst visiting Scarborough, a trip to The Plough in Scalby is highly recommended
By JACK HUGHESDrive ten minutes from Scarborough’s bustling seafront and iconic rocky headland and you’ll find the charming hamlet of Scalby.
At the heart of this quaint village is The Plough, a pub that prides itself on local, seasonal food, and which kindly invited me and a friend over at the weekend to sample its fayre in its newly appointed "Garden Lounge".
To begin, we order a trio of small plates that highlight the exuberance of local produce and the centrality of seafood to the identity of the Yorkshire Coast. There is a plate piled high with tempura squid, crisp on the outside and tender within, served with a fiery sriracha mayonnaise; then, melting nuggets of battered cod cheek, brightened by the piquant forwardness of a terribly good sauce gribiche; and finally, kedgeree croquettes that excel in balancing the smokiness of haddock with the sweetness of a raisin purée and the spiced depth of a curry mayonnaise.
A piscine theme continues into the main course, when I opt for a slab of roasted wild halibut that demonstrates a masterful dedication to the best of fish cookery. Bronzed on top and pearlescent throughout, the halibut is perfectly cooked, with a firm, flaky texture. Each addition to the plate is studied; in-season asparagus tips are sweet and slightly grassy; samphire and cockles bring a briny uplift to the delicate fish; pommes dauphine deliver texture; and finally, a sa ron hollandaise harmonises the flavours on the plate with its bold richness.
“A TRIO OF SMALL PLATES HIGHLIGHT THE EXUBERANCE OF LOCAL PRODUCE”
We finish with two beguiling desserts. The first, a classic sticky to ee pudding, is made all the more indulgent with a salted caramel sauce. The second, a rhubarb trifle, manages the interplay of astringency and sweetness with great dexterity, as a sherbetty rhubarb jelly o sets the sweetness of a vanilla-flecked custard. The cocktail menu does not disappoint either. A classic negroni, underpinned by herbal bitterness and fruity aromatics, delights with its considerable punch; likewise, a spirituous sidecar ensnares me with the resonant warmth of cognac and multilayered citrussy hit of mandarin, triple sec and curaçao.

Merryn Wilderspin on bringing bespoke tartan to Yorkshire
Malton-based businesswoman, Merryn Wilderspin, has unveiled a new range of luxury stylish bags and accessories to much fanfare: Yorkshire Tartan. The collection reflects Merryn’s Yorkshire heritage and her love of tartan, and features a colour palette typically associated with the county – blue, green, white and yellow.
A fusion of elegance and innovation, this new product range includes the hobo bag, mini shopper, mini backpack, round box bag, flap over box bag, metal frame bag, clutch, cardholder, zip purse, fold over purse, men’s wallet, tote shopper, bucket tote, slouch bag, cabin case, du e bag, holdall, messenger bag, wash bag, bum bag, laptop, MacBook, ipad case, umbrella and phone case.
Each piece tells a story of meticulous artistry and unparalleled craftsmanship – timeless elegance reimagined. Merryn has utilised a bespoke tartan pattern design programme to create the exclusive and authentic tartan in Yorkshire colours and each item is made-to-order by a specialist print and handcrafted product supplier. The ‘Yorkshire Tartan’ design is printed onto blank leather, which is then cut to shape, sewn together and finished by hand, combining a blend of state-of-the-art digital printing techniques and traditional artisan skills to produce the time-honoured luxury range.
The bags are constructed from 100% Nappa leather – a soft, finegrained leather which is renowned for its luxurious feel, smooth finish and durability. Faux leather options will be added to the collection later this year.
On creating Yorkshire Tartan, Merryn explains: “It’s been years in the making, but I’m thrilled to finally introduce this vibrant range of chic bags and accessories. Inspired by my deep-seated roots with Yorkshire, coupled with a lifelong passion for tartan, it seemed natural to
unite the two and it’s been an exciting journey to bring the collection to life.”
Goathland train station was the chosen location for this photoshoot and Merryn worked with a team of Yorkshire-based creatives and models to procure the lifestyle images – a further nod to her love of the county. Outfits were provided by Master Debonair and Jigsaw.
The move coincides with the relaunch of The View From My Rear (TVFMR), of which Yorkshire Tartan forms the flagship collection. TVFMR was originally inspired by the view from the back of Merryn’s home in a village on the outskirts of Malton in rural North Yorkshire. Notably a rainbow that arched over the cornfield at the bottom of her garden, which prompted her to create photography-based fine art and canvas art prints featuring views of the North York Moors and coastline. Her technique has evolved to become far more artistically styled as a result of her experimenting with various creative digital processes, transforming original subject matter such as flowers, trees and even industrial machinery into eye-catching art forms.
Today, the e-commerce brand features seven premium leather bags, fashion accessories, stationery and homeware collections as well as related fine art prints and canvases. TVFMR comprises the flagship ‘Yorkshire Tartan’ range, plus six floral collections created from images of Merryn’s garden flowers. Two new designs are being prepared for launch to coincide with Whitby’s Steampunk weekend in July and Goth weekend in November 2024.
Merryn continues: “As a result of the fast fashion issues of overstocking and high levels of annual landfill, the sector is witnessing the start of substantial change. There is greater emphasis on wardrobe longevity, repair and recycling. TVFMR business model centres on the made-to-order, slow fashion approach, which means I can showcase new and niche collections without investing in stock or being adversely a ected by trends and fashion fads.”
Future plans include collaborations with a variety of retailers, producers and suppliers and Yorkshire Tartan also appeared on the runway at York Fashion Week in May.

JOSH
Real life STORY
Absolutely Yorkshire sits down with Tory Buchan to find out more about her dream wedding at Oaklands in East Yorkshire
Q Who proposed, and how, when, and where?
A Josh proposed on 4 June, 2022. Josh, our son Emerson and I were staying in a treetop yurt at Yurtshire in Ripon, surrounded by amazing views, a hot tub, outdoor pizza oven, kayaking, and hiking. It is an amazing place to be. As the day started, I walked into the yurt where Emerson was wearing a t-shirt that said, ‘Will you marry my daddy?’ and Josh, down on one knee. It couldn’t have been more perfect! We hiked up to the local pub where my mum and dad joined us, and we spent the afternoon celebrating.
Q What attracted you to Oaklands for your wedding day?
A Everything about Oaklands stole our hearts. From the moment we drove up we knew. It’s stunning yet outdoorsy, the
grand lodge is just another level of rustic but glam. And when we met Andrea, it was like finding the final piece of the puzzle. We knew immediately that we were in great hands, and without hesitation, we confirmed our date then and there. Oaklands was the first venue we visited, and we instantly knew. We didn’t need to look any further.
Q How did the venue suit the style of your wedding, and did it live up to your expectations?
A It exceeded our expectations, and those of our friends and families – they were all blown away! As very relaxed, outdoorsy people, our main aim was to have fun and enjoy ourselves without any pressure. Oaklands absolutely delivered on this, with an extra touch of glam. What we appreciated most was the flexibility; even if the weather wasn’t
“Every aspect was unforgettable and still gives us goosebumps”
perfect, we could still have the outdoor ceremony and wedding we dreamed of.
Q Did you feel well supported by the team at Oaklands on the build up to your wedding?
A The team at Oaklands made the entire process seamless, from our first meeting to the day after picking up our belongings. We always knew what to expect next and when things needed to be sorted out. Whether we had questions or needed anything, the team was just a call or email away. Their passion for what they do definitely shows, evident in their willingness to accommodate anything, late-night appointments, extra visits, advice etc. It truly made all the di erence.
Q How did you both feel on the day?
A It’s hard to put into words just how incredible the whole day was and just how this made us feel! Everyone says the day goes so quick, but we both remember every moment as if it were yesterday, including the smallest details. From the breath-taking drive into Oaklands to standing by the lake surrounded by our loved ones during the ceremony, walking over the bridge with music playing after the ceremony, and the amazing candy floss cocktails – every aspect was unforgettable and even now gives us goosebumps.
Q What parts stood out for you the most?
A There was one particular moment when all of our friends and family were all outside
in the sun, and we took a walk together. We stood where we had the ceremony, overlooking the lake and everyone. Seeing them all having the best time in such a beautiful setting, and realising they were all there for us, was truly special. On our way back, having the space to play tag with Emerson, just enjoying ourselves and dancing around doing the highland fling, made us feel incredibly lucky.
Q Did you use a number of local suppliers?
A We did. We truly can’t express enough how the teams we worked with to bring the day together had such a positive impact on both the lead-up to the wedding and the day itself. You hear stories of people being let down, but everyone involved made us feel incredibly confident. From the team at Oaklands to our singer, hair and makeup, catering, photographer, videographer, and
even the amazing wedding dress boutique
– they all exceeded our expectations. Afterwards, seeing photos with our suppliers being tagged on social media was such a nice feeling. We live in the area so knowing most of our suppliers were local really meant a lot to us.
Q What are your top tips when wedding planning and on the day itself?
A It’s your day, so just do and be yourselves! Do whatever makes you both happy. There’s no right or wrong way to do things – what matters most is that you’re happy with your plans and looking forward to your day. For us, keeping it simple and focusing on what we absolutely loved was key. Saying 'yes' to what we truly wanted removed any stress or worry and left us feeling excited to enjoy our day!

Parisian CHARM
Bavette has opened in Leeds, bringing a sumptuous touch of French dining to the city. Absolutely chats to co-founder Sandy Jarvis about going it alone
Bavette has just opened in Leeds – a brand new neighbourhood bistro which is the first venture from ex-Culpeper Group MD and head chef Sandy Jarvis and his husband, restaurant manager and sommelier Clément Cousin, formerly of Brawn and The Buxton. A true collaboration between front-of-house and kitchen, Bavette is born out of the desire of its passionate and experienced co-founders who share their love of restaurants. The result is a relaxed, convivial bistro where food and wine are of equal measure. Sandy invites Absolutely Yorkshire in to tell us more.
Q How long has Bavette been in the making and what inspired the idea behind it?
A The idea really took root during lockdown. Bavette was the name of the ‘bistro’ Clément
and I ate at every day at home during this time. It was a silly game to help ease the boredom. I’d cook dishes and we’d discuss if they’d be on the menu. From there we just started talking about our dream place. We didn’t put a plan together, but then one day in summer 2022 we got talking one evening. We both felt it was the right time for us to leave our roles. Clément had been running The Buxton for three years and it had been hard and exhausting. He was ready for a new challenge. We had started discussing at board level a plan to start expanding again, in a year or so. I felt the right thing was to either commit to the next 5-10 years or not, and I decided I couldn’t do that. We’d got through Covid and the businesses had survived and reopened. I was proud of how we did that. They were finding their feet and ready to start a new cycle. So, I felt this was the right time for me to step away. We knew we wanted to open a neighbourhood bistro as this is our favourite
“A NEIGHBOURHOOD BISTRO IS OUR FAVOURITE TYPE OF PLACE”
type of place. I suggested Yorkshire (maybe expecting a little pushback) but got an immediate ‘sure, why not’ from Clément.
Q Why was Leeds the perfect destination for it?
A We spent time looking and thinking and although not initially thinking of a Leeds suburb (our initial thoughts were maybe York, Harrogate or maybe out to Ilkley) but, as we thought more, we felt a Leeds suburb would be a great fit. I’m from Leeds so it’s extra special for that reason. Also in terms of the size of the city, big enough for a strong customer base, but not so big you struggle to get out to the countryside. A solid community that particularly supports independent restaurants as well as a wide net for customers who are happy to travel a bit for a good meal.
Q How does it feel to go into business with Clément?
A Amazing. It’s really special doing it together. We have such similar views on
food, wine and most importantly hospitality that we don’t struggle to come to important decisions together. He’s also incredibly good at his job and inspires and pushes me every day to be the best I can.
Q From day one, what did you want to o er?
A A neighbourhood bistro. Somewhere warm, inviting, hospitable. That you want to come for a birthday, but also if you can’t be bothered to cook tonight. We wanted it to feel like a Parisian bistro.
Q How have you approached the menu?
A I love classic French cooking. I love cooking it, and I love eating it, as does Clément, so
“WITH ONE KITCHEN AND ONE MENU YOU CAN REALLY CONTINUE TO WORK ON THINGS”
that was easy. I’m very passionate about sourcing ingredients both from a flavour and a sustainability point so this will always be there. Properly seasonal food, hopefully always delicious food, full of flavour. Some classic dishes you know and some you don’t. I wanted people to recognise things but have a few bits maybe they didn’t know and hopefully fall in love with. Our goal is for everything to be the best version of something you’ve had. The one when you’re talking about with a friend, and you remember ours.
Q Is there one dish in particular you are loving right now?
A Everything to be honest. But I’ve loved having the time to focus on di erent things that are good/very good and try and get them to be excellent. Running four sites, or having three menus across two floors as we did in London, that’s very di cult. But with one kitchen, and one menu, you can really continue to work on things. I’d say out of everything I’m loving the pate en croute. I’d never made it until a couple of months before the opening. But I can see why people get obsessed with them and very passionate about making them. I’m really loving that, and think each week they’re getting better.
Q How key is the wine list to the whole experience?
A Massively important. Obviously, as Clément grew up on a vineyard this was always going to be important. To be able to have his
father’s and brother’s wines on our list is very special. They have their own section ‘Family Wine’ and people love hearing about the vineyard and choosing from that selection. But the wider list too. We’re both very passionate about natural wine, but also very keen for people to not feel excluded. We mainly care about it from a farming standpoint as well as feeling the wines generally taste more alive. So, if you don’t know about natural wine, or don’t care, then that’s absolutely fine. You should be able to come in, order a pinot noir and enjoy it without any thought to how well the farmer looks after the soil. That’s our job to know that. Natural wine went through a rough patch five years or so ago as it became very popular and people started putting bad wines on the list and passing the imperfections o with customers as ‘well it’s natural’. This gave people the impression, understandably, that it was not good.
Q What are your hopes for Bavette going forward?
A There’s no big plan to open more. We just want Bavette to settle into the community and be enjoyed by people. When we decided to do ‘just’ a restaurant (as in no bedrooms, or pub on the side) our reason was to just have one thing to focus on. Our drive is to keep pushing Bavette to get better and better, which is really exciting to us.

because it’s much quicker, our procedures are less invasive, and recovery is much faster. If you are in pain and waiting to see your GP, or waiting for an operation, it will also a ect your mental well-being. In most cases, this is a quick and easy answer to what may have been years of pain and misery for someone.”
TURN BACK FROM PAIN
Woodlands Hospital o ers less invasive surgery to ease sciatica pain
Asurgeon at Darlington’s Woodlands Hospital is using an innovative technique to o er patients fast and, in many cases, permanent relief from pain and misery.
Over the past couple of years, consultant Dan Fagan has been using minimal access surgery to perform percutaneous discectomy operations to deal with slipped or crushed discs that are pressing on the nerves that cause sciatica leg pain. Traditional surgery involves a general anaesthetic and quite invasive treatment with a long recovery period. By using imaging techniques for accuracy, and an operating device called a spine wand, Mr Fagan only needs to make a couple of small incisions in the back, at the location of the damaged disc, before inserting a portal through which he feeds the wand. The wand
generates a plasma field over the tip, which quickly vaporises the damaged part of the disc.
The procedure is treated as a day-case, and treatment only takes about 30 minutes, under a light sedation. It is far less invasive than traditional surgery, and o ers patients an 80 per cent chance of eliminating the sciatic pain, with little chance of complications or harm. Patients are also up and about very quickly after the procedure, and home the same day. Mr Fagan is one of only a very few surgeons in the UK using this procedure, and the only one in the North-East.
“We are very lucky to have the equipment and the expertise, right here at the Woodlands, to be able to o er patients the most cutting edge treatment for conditions that can prevent them living their best lives,” he says. “Severe sciatica can a ect your ability to work, to enjoy sports, and just live your daily life. Many patients are choosing to self-pay and be treated privately for things like slipped discs
Mr Fagan does take GP referrals, but patients can book direct with his practice, SpineArt, and will usually have an appointment for an assessment within a week, rather than waiting to go through the NHS system. Initial treatment is likely to involve a very straightforward spine injection under local anaesthetic, which often solves the problem. If that doesn’t work, Mr Fagan will advise a percutaneous discectomy.
“I’m seeing a lot of people at the moment, who have previously had the injection but, unfortunately, the symptoms have returned and they are needing further intervention, which would normally mean a long wait for traditional surgery. Because they want to get back to a full and healthy life as soon as possible, they are opting to come to the Woodlands for the treatment.”

FABRIC PART OF THE
Quintessential local business James Hare turns 160 in 2025 and has remained in the family since day one. Absolutely chats to the current managing director, Saffron Hare
Q How young were you when you first became aware of the family business?
A I grew up with the family business so cannot recall when I was first made aware. It was part of family life, we didn’t know any different. My father was the last Chairman and there was always conversation about the business so it gets ingrained, you pick up information organically.
Q It’s relatively rare to hear about a proper family business remaining so over such a long period of time - were you always going to join the company at the turn of the century?
A When I was younger I didn’t plan to join the family business, but you inevitably get drawn in, there’s a strong family ethos and now I have been here for 25 years, the fifth generation. James Hare is an incredible company, it was founded in 1865 and is steeped in the British textile industry, based in Leeds we were in the heart of it and our warehouse now is the last surviving textile warehouse in the City.
Q What do you think it shows about James Hare that it has remained in the family?
A Our ability to change, continue to be relevant and I think our heritage, every generation has taken the business forward and we’re very proud of what
we are part of, and lucky. James Hare started off as wool traders, moved to manufacturing, then to silk distribution and today we are an interiors company selling fabrics, silks, wallcoverings and trims worldwide.
Q When you joined, what was the business offering?
A We specialised in silks for the bridal trade and I’ve lost count of the number of women who tell me they wore wedding dresses made from James Hare silk. It’s incredible to know that so many of our fabrics have ultimately created these important memories.
Q Have you evolved in any way in the two decades since?
A Absolutely, we have developed the James Hare look, which is a classic and contemporary interior style, designed very much for customers to create inspiring spaces from the fabric collections. We are very focused on export and an expanding market in the US, which is going really well. We have always kept moving with new technologies and a good example of that recently is our embroidered fabrics. We now also have an extensive range of plains in everything from pure and faux silk to linen in over 700 colours and we can offer a wallcovering service.
Q How does it feel to be the first female managing director?
A I am acutely aware of my responsibility as the steward of this business and am focused on developing it for the next generation. I am looking to evolve the business and will judge my success on where James Hare is when I eventually hand over.
“We have developed the James Hare look, which is a classic and contemporary interiors style”
A We have a really good network of agents and interior designers all over the country who know everything about the fabrics inside out. Our collections are designed to work together, but not to match. It’s more interesting to create interiors with different colour tones and patterns so we definitely try and encourage customers to think along these lines for their own homes and hopefully the way we put our collections together helps them do that.
Q How would you sum up your own design style at home?
Q What’s new from James Hare for the home?
A The launch of our first ready-made cushion collection is something I had wanted to introduce for some time, so it was a huge achievement to finally make that happen. Look out for new cushions this autumn. Our passementerie collection has been growing since we launched our first trims about five years ago. This year we have been able to add a new bespoke service, paper backing the trims to make decorative edges to doors and rooms, which is a very exciting development and I think will give customers lots of opportunity to use trims in many other ways in their interior schemes.
Q Are there any big trends in 2024 that you are tapping into?
A There has been a lot of interest in ikats, we launched our first last year called Paxton. There is a lot of interest in florals, a nod to chintz again, but in a more contemporary way, and damasks. There’s definitely a mood for colour and pattern and we have designs in the collection and coming out in the autumn and next spring that will reflect this so keep an eye.
Q What advice and support do you offer customers when they are choosing for the home?
A I love a home that is comfortable above all and obviously I have the whole James Hare fabric collection to choose from so I can use these designs at home. It’s a great way to see how they work too. I like a smart drawing room but nothing overly fussy, and I like having accessories, so lots of cushions on sofas and beds. Most of us love being in the kitchen, it really is the heart of the home and my home is no exception, we spend a lot of time in the kitchen. It has to be a very functional space obviously, but it’s also a great gathering spot for the family as I have created a really cosy relaxing area with sofas and then a dining space where we can all sit down together for meals and for entertaining.
Q What’s great about being a Yorkshire business through and through?
A Yorkshire has a strong sense of pride. It is a place where innovation thrives. We have an abundance of family businesses and start-ups. Leeds is a dynamic hub, rapidly evolving and embracing progress.
Q What ambitions do you have for James Hare going forward?
A At the forefront for the company right now is our 160th anniversary next year and we have lots of plans to celebrate.

With woodlogs costing 68% less than electric heating, and 13% less than air source heat pump (source: Nottingham energy partnership), a high performance model from CALEO offers renewable and sustainable heating, high efficiency, low carbon and low emission solutions whilst also delivering a spectacular centrepiece in your home.
CONVENIENT AND ‘HASSLE FREE’ GAS FIREPLACES
Gas continues to be a favourite, with instant controls at the touch of a button. Incredible realism, with high efficiency performance often beyond 80%, appliances also available with very flexible balanced flue configurations and also for use on LPG gas supply for homes beyond the main grid. No issues within smoke control areas, and perfect
for locations where sourcing and storing a regular wood supply is problematic. We even have models which are suspended from the ceiling for the ultimate ‘wow’ factor.
BIO-ETHANOL – NO
CHIMNEY REQUIRED
Huge leaps in the bio-ethanol sector have been taken by our manufacturers, to deliver what in many ways is the perfect solution for modern day home heating. No smoke, no particulate emissions, no chimney… but with incredible flames and real heat!
Bio-ethanol is a readily available liquid fuel, which can be used without the need for a chimney or flue. Don’t be put off by some of the ‘candle like’ flame effects in lesser products within the marketplace. Like our fireplaces, the ‘wow’ factor is a mandatory requirement and our bio-ethanol burners are unlike anything else in the market. State
of the art, with remote control ignition, autopumped refills, every safety device and the ability to turn off in an instant.
ELECTRIC SOLUTIONS – NO CHIMNEY REQUIRED
Often used in areas where heat is ‘absolutely not’ the main requirement, but where there is very much a need for a statement fireplace. We have various technologies available, which offer amazing visuals and a sense of warmth. Choose from holographic video flames, magically transferred into a bed of realistic logs for an incredible, lifelike illusion along with realistic sound effects. These models also have the option for a 600w heater, to give a nice warming supplement to the main house heating.
Or the water vapour solution, to give a wonderful flame effect over an artificial log base, which can either be mains fed so
you never have to refill it. Both offer great focal point solutions and are perfect in spaces where heat is not required – no risk of burns, often used in public spaces and homes with little fingers!
At CALEO we are the UK’s sole specialist in central and suspended fireplaces, and from our convenient base just off J30 of the M1 motorway on the outskirts of Sheffield, offer the full technical design, supply and installation nationwide.
We have an incredible showroom available privately by appointment only, either in person or by video call, where we can happily demonstrate the wide range of styles, fuel types and finishes available.

CHOOSING ART FOR THE HOME AND TOP TIPS FOR BUYING ARTWORK
By SARA HILLDisplaying artwork is one of the most enjoyable and effective ways to reflect your personal style and create an inviting atmosphere but, for anyone new to the art world, it
can be a tricky place to navigate.
Visiting a reputable gallery, such as Clarendon Fine Art, can offer a comforting assurance of quality and authenticity, while making the art buying experience enjoyable. Working with an art consul-
tant, who is passionate about the artwork, but also knowledgeable and dedicated, makes art collecting a joy and a less daunting experience. This allows you to take the time to find the perfect piece of artwork for your space, which can take anywhere from weeks to months, without ever rushing into a decision.
As a first step when choosing artwork, it’s important to understand the space you’re working with and what value you want the artwork to bring. When considering your budget, factors such as the artist’s reputation, rarity, and medium affect pricing, but it’s important to remember that collecting
art is not about the price tag, but the value it brings to your life. Art buying doesn’t have to break the bank and consultants can guide you to great finds. Depending on your budget, you may want to consider an up and coming artist, from young British talents like Tim Fowler and Lee Kaplan, which are often at a much lower price point. Exploring work from up-and-coming artists is a lovely way to start your art collection, as it supports their early careers and can be very rewarding as their prominence grows. Choose artworks that resonate with you emotionally, those that you can’t walk away from without a second look. Art is expressive and should evoke a feeling or a connection. Whether it’s a contemplative beach scene by an artist like Philip Gray, or an explosive piece of street art from Mr
Brainwash, it should be something that speaks your language.
Curiosity is key when it comes to choosing art so, even if you have no prior experience or knowledge of artists, don’t be daunted or put off. Being adventurous and open minded can open unexpected doors and lead to some delightful discoveries. To make the decision easier, the Clarendon teams are always happy to take a selection of artwork to a customer’s home, office or business for a bespoke on-site art consultation – a service which has contributed to their reputation as a gallery that, quite literally, goes the extra mile.
Don’t overlook practical aspects such as space requirements and installation, as displaying your artwork effectively is crucial. Consider the scale of your space – a small painting might look lost on a large wall, whereas groupings or larger pieces can make a bold statement. Artists such as Danielle O’Connor Akiyama and Patrick Rubinstein offer striking diptychs and experimental pieces perfect for larger spaces. Proper lighting can enhance the impact of your art dramatically, so try to avoid direct sunlight and opt for indirect lighting to prevent glare. Again, this is where working with a gallery is beneficial as they can take care of everything from delivery to hanging the artwork, bespoke insurance and anything else you may need, helping to make your art experience a hassle-free experience and one that you will want to repeat again and again.

Damian Barker, founder and CEO of new build specialists
Verus Construction , lets Absolutely into his design thinking behind this stunning modern home in Leeds
Founded in 2009 and based in Yorkshire, Verus Construction is a luxury new build construction specialist, and creates unique homes and distinctive housing developments across Yorkshire – and this project in North Leeds is a case in point.
Life at Sandmoor Avenue
The objective of the project was to craft a luxury, modern and open plan family home. The recently completed Sandmoor Avenue property in North Leeds is Verus’ latest luxury home project and does just that. The design team included Studio Map, Adept Consulting Engineers and Verus Construction, whose skills, expertise and attention to detail are showcased throughout the project. The result is an exceptional five bedroom family home.
Use of glass
Thanks to the glass interiors championed during design phases, as you enter Sandmoor Avenue, the
open plan kitchen, living and dining area welcomes you with a wealth of natural light, courtesy of the floorto-ceiling, double-height glass panels and sliding doors, creating an expansive, open-air entertainment and dining space that seamlessly extends into the garden space.
Glass is increasingly becoming the go-to for creating luxury and spacious feeling homes, thanks in part to its easy availability as well as its ability to make spaces feel more airy and open. When considering the redesign and build, myself and the team decided to use vast amounts of glass to complement the open plan design and create a spacious home. The design is centred around this abundance of glass, including an entirely glass rear exterior walls and doors, which are crucial for creating a bright and open living space.
Sandmoor Avenue utilises additional unique glass features such as keyhole windows, a modern stained glass front door and skylights to bring extra sunlight into the home and allow natural light to bounce freely throughout the space. The vast use of glass works to
“Open plan living spaces are a hallmark of contemporary homes”
bring the wow factor, maximising space and light to create a luxury feel to the space.
Open plan living
Open plan living spaces are fast becoming a hallmark of contemporary homes. The interior style has grown hugely in popularity over the last few years, creating stylish and seamless spaces that work as beautiful and multi-functional open plan areas for all the family. One of the main advantages to opening up and combining living areas is that spaces can be flooded with natural light and take advantage of surrounding views. Sandmoor Avenue cleverly uses a focal fireplace and glass dividing doors to celebrate the open and connected space whilst still maintaining the integrity and structure of each functional room. The unique bridge staircase is cohesive with the open plan layout to the home and prevents any obstruction to the vast view of the beautiful garden and double ceiling height entrance.
Seamless flooring
Another standout feature of the project is the minimal interior design and use of polished concrete floors which have been used seamlessly throughout the ground floor. This industrial look is on-trend and works to create a cohesive and minimalistic space.
The secret to open plan living is ensuring each space retains its own character and purpose whilst the overall interior design feels coherent and connected. The cool modern concrete style has been mimicked through the use of polished plaster on the fireplace surround, which acts as a focal point and continues the clean lines and connectivity throughout the home. The use of a soft and neutral colour palette helps to make the space more grounded and adaptable for all uses.
Open plan spaces are fantastic for entertaining, but can feel sparse or empty when not in use, so using contrasting colours and statement furniture has helped to inject personality and create distinct spaces. The use of complementary pops of colour by the owners has softened the chic industrial flooring and created a trendy and cosy family home.

TRAVEL
ISLAND dreaming
Sunshine by day, glamour by night at City of Dreams resort in Cyprus
By SANDY CADIZ-SMITHThe beautiful island of Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, following Sicily and Sardinia. A relatively short hop (about four-and-a-half hours) from London, it’s famed for its exceptional food and wine, fascinating ancient ruins and vibrant towns. And, perhaps most of all, for its ideal climate with an average of 320 sunshine days a year. According to legend, it’s the original island of love, where Aphrodite, the goddess of love, emerged from the ocean, and it was also once a gift from Roman general Mark Anthony to the Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. Undoubtedly, the island has a rich history, and plenty of love has been lavished on it over the centuries. British Airways have recently introduced direct flights to Larnaca, less than an hour’s drive from our destination: the sparkly new resort City of Dreams Mediterranean.
Opened in July 2023, the resort has more than 500 rooms and is a striking sight dominating the horizon as we approach, and our anticipation builds. It’s a visual masterpiece, making the most of the views across the stunning coastal landscape. From the moment we’re welcomed into the elegance of the marble lobby, we immediately feel enveloped in the Cypriot dream.
We’re soon escorted to our spacious room by our charming hostess. Everything is new and shiny and so luxurious. But the highlight is our balcony, complete with sofa, table, and chairs, and the most spectacular views over the stunning sparkle of the multi-pool complex below and the sea in the distance. City of Dreams is home to Cyprus’s largest pool complex. The four unique pools create an extensive canvas of blue and are designed like a Mediterranean village with interlinking bridges and whitewashed stone arches. There’s a pool for every mood – a wave pool and waterslides for the active-at-heart, an adults-only area, and even a beach-style pool with real sand to sink our toes into.
“It’s a visual masterpiece, making the most of the views across the stunning coastal landscape”
At night, the pools are illuminated with a symphony of lights for a dazzling aquatic display. The hotel, designed around its glitzy casino, which is open 24/7, comes alive after dark with endless entertainment, including musicians, DJs and dancers, theatre shows, and exclusive parties. We love the buzz of the vibrant nightlife that gives City of Dreams a unique energy and sense of fun.
Renu Spa provides the perfect space to unplug and unwind for ultimate daytime relaxation. We enjoyed heavenly massages and time in the sauna, steam room, and relaxation area. There’s also a well-equipped gym and heated indoor pool for serious lengths, where we worked o some calories, which turned out to be a good idea because dining at City of Dreams is a glorious global gastronomic journey.
There are three a la carte restaurants – Anais, which serves gourmet French dishes, pan-Asian Amber Dragon and Mediterranean Olea. There’s also possibly the most staggeringly delightful (and huge) bu et we’ve ever experienced in Aura, celebrating flavours from around the world and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Keen to learn more about Cyprus on our first visit to the island, we visited the fascinating ancient architectural site at Kourion, whose origins date back to the late Bronze Age. We also explored the charming streets and stylish harbour of nearby Limassol, which is lined with restaurants and shops and plenty to discover for a great day out. Both are only a short drive away from our majestic dream resort on Cyprus’ sun-kissed Mediterranean shores. Living the dream indeed.

Natural EVOLUTION
Nurturing the next generation of young ecologists
By JENN HARRISAccording to gov.uk, over 80% of young people are eager to take action to help the environment and this may come as no surprise; after all, they are the future custodians of our planet. As educators, it is our role to engage with young learners and to inspire them to protect the natural world around them. This means developing a sound understanding of ecology, as well as providing a platform for meaningful discussion and open dialogue, in a way that helps young people to make informed decisions and to build confidence around taking future action.
Much classroom-based learning is centred around equipping young people with the right skills for future careers. Many of those careers, revolving around preserving our natural world, are in emerging fields. On that basis, it is important that we foster an educational environment where these future roles are discussed and where the right skillsets are nurtured. It’s impossible to overstress the importance of 21st century skills in supporting young learners to analyse complex environmental problems and identify creative solutions. The previous overfocus on IQ (Intelligence Quotient) is shifting, as we make space for both EQ (Emotional Quotient) and CQ (Cultural Quotient). From an educational perspective, it is key that we place increased emphasis on how learners interact with one another when advocating change, the language
“It is our role to engage with young learners and inspire them to protect the natural world”
they use and the consideration they show to others. Promoting this kind of learning environment will furnish young people with the ability to work collaboratively while allowing space for numerous perspectives to be heard, but in a non-judgemental way.
EMPOWERING CHANGEMAKERS
Ultimately, we need to be teaching young people the skills to explore and question the role we play as humans in ecology, as well as how we are connected to other living things. Skills that empower learners as changemakers and future leaders are a growth mindset, flexibility, adaptability, and empathy. Yet educators must also nurture passion, focus and resilience to develop well-rounded learners who are equipped to deal with an ever-changing world. But how can we ensure that ecological learning has a direct and meaningful impact on the everyday lives of students in the real world?
The UN Sustainable Development Goals are a great starting point as they provide a solid foundation within which to learn, action and implement change. For educators, this can be developed further in a meaningful way by bridging the gap between employers and organisations.
For example, it can be useful to reflect on real life scenarios where employers are acting on climate change and also where they have seen successes and failures. Leading practical sessions in an alternative workshop setting can also be inspiring for learners.
Having access to hands-on experience and o ering ‘live learning’, not just theoretical in-class traditional teaching, or watching videos about foreign countries and cultures students don’t recognise, helps them to feel more connected to both the issues and the solutions, whether at home or further afield. Likewise, balancing philanthropic projects with activities that deliver immediate results such as local litter picks, and those that take longer such as planting and sowing seeds, helps students to recognise both short-term and long-term environmental planning. At our colleges, we have found that delivering immersive lessons such as poster presentations on creating sustainable cities, or collecting and donating to food banks, really helps to inspire conversation and gives our students positive experiences where they can make a real di erence. It also fosters teamwork helping young people to hone their collaboration and leadership skills.
“Ecology is a sector that embraces a varied skill set and not simply traditional qualifications”
A WIDER SENSE OF SHARED RESPONSIBILITY
By engaging in hands-on projects like this, young people quickly learn that environmental problems cannot be solved by one country alone; this requires a global approach delivered with passion and intent. Similarly, o ering local and international projects provides opportunities for compare/contract activities, while building bridges and creating international lifelong friendships based on shared values. Schools that take this a step further and
embed these kinds of interactive projects into their curriculum will also create a wider sense of shared responsibility amongst their student community, as well as building a stronger connection to local surroundings and the planet as a whole.
Careers education for younger learners has been given greater emphasis in schools over recent years, but how can educators ensure that learning inspires them to consider a future career in the environmental or outdoor sector, especially when many of these careers did not exist in their parent’s generation? Promoting and providing exposure to diverse career pathways, field trips, guest lectures and mentor programmes are all important aspects of careers education. Being inspired by someone who is actively engaged in the environmental sector will always be the best way to gain early engagement. Educators need to focus on the value and impact of these careers and how meaningful and fulfilling the work can be – as well as consider the opportunity to travel, explore and work in a wide range of settings with diverse groups of people. Ecology is also a sector that embraces a varied skill set and not simply traditional qualifications.
SOLVING THE WORLD’S BIGGEST ISSUES
For educators there are several barriers to supporting the next generation of young ecologists. The need for schools to constantly adapt and flex to change in order to ensure teaching expertise is relevant and fit for purpose means continual CPD (Continuing Professional Development) is vital. Like any other subject, ecology-based subjects need to be taught by teachers who are themselves passionate, curious and welcoming of environmental debate. The curriculum also needs to keep up with rapid change to ensure that young learners leave school equipped with the skills they need to be successful in today’s world.
We are soon to launch our own Future Ecologists programme across our colleges where our students will have the opportunity to learn directly from ecology experts in a practical setting. Having the opportunity to put real life scenarios into practice and helping young people to make the connection between class-based learning and the real world is ever more crucial. There is a greater belief amongst Millennials and Gen Z that future education will directly empower people to solve the world’s biggest issues, including the climate crisis and human rights. With that in mind, schools and educators have a duty to lead by example, to encourage curiosity, and to help young people to find their voice in a crowded world that needs our protection.

ROOM TO GROW
The
Froebelian School, Horsforth,
will open its doors to children from the age of two
From September, The Froebelian School, Horsforth – one of the North’s leading educational success stories – will welcome all children from the age of two, marking a new chapter in a Froebelian education. The decision follows over 100 years following a successful model from the age of three.
Headteacher Anna Coulson says: “I am thrilled to announce that after careful consideration and consultation with parents and sta , we will be o ering funded places for two-year-olds at our beautiful school. This decision is about making our best even better and opening
up the opportunities of Froebelian’s ‘Flying Start’ to even more children.
“I have always been passionate about early years and provision within the school setting,” she continues.
“Over my years in education and as an Early Years inspector, I have been privileged to witness young children with access to amazingly qualified sta and beautiful spaces flourish and be challenged appropriately. This puts Froebelian at the forefront of Prep schools in Leeds and the UK.”
Froebelian Early Years experts, Mrs Giles and Mrs Townend, recently visited Community Playthings in East Sussex, a company that aligns beautifully with Froebelian values in the way they build and create solid wood furniture
and play equipment to support children as they play and learn.
“EVERY CHILD DESERVES THE BEST START AND WE WILL ENSURE THAT WE PROVIDE JUST THAT ”
Mrs Giles says: “The designs at Community Playthings are intentionally simple and beautiful allowing children the freedom to use their imagination and to develop and grow, which fits perfectly with our Froebel heritage and vision for our exciting new provision for all children from the age of two.”

Craven Museum
The history hub in Skipton has been shortlisted for the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2024
Craven Museum at Skipton Town Hall has been announced as one of five finalists for Art Fund Museum of the Year 2024, the world’s largest museum prize. Art Fund annually shortlists five outstanding museums for Museum of the Year. The 2024 edition recognises inspiring projects from autumn 2022 through to winter 2023, with audiences and communities at their heart – with a particular focus on community engagement, sustainable ways of working, and demonstration of ambition by reinventing what it means to be ‘the best’ museum for the audiences of today and tomorrow.
On behalf of Craven Museum, Danielle Daglan, Head of Culture and Archives at North Yorkshire Council, says: “We are absolutely delighted to have been shortlisted for Art Fund Museum of the Year; to have the work of this small but hugely dedicated and passionate team recognised by this award is amazing.
“Craven Museum at Skipton Town Hall sits at the heart of its community and has accessibility considerations running through everything the team does,” she adds. “We believe all communities deserve the highest quality cultural experiences – this is our ethos, and we think small museums have the potential to lead the way in innovation of access and community engagement. We are proof of this and we want to inspire others to do the same.’’
Craven Museum is located in the Grade II listed Skipton Town Hall, a modern multi-arts cultural hub on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. The venue also includes an exhibition gallery, historic concert hall,
education and community spaces, which all work in unison with the museum to enrich and expand the cultural experiences on o er. The museum is focused on the local area – spanning pre-history to contemporary in areas as diverse as archaeology, textiles, fine art, literature, social history, and more – the museum has something for everyone.
The museum was recognised as the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum 2023 and Best Accessible Museum 2023. It was judged one of the top three museums for access provision out of over 2,000 UK museums and heritage sites. Craven Museum programmed free or low cost activities or events every day of the 2023 school holidays for families.
The winning museum will be announced at a ceremony at the National Gallery in London on 10 July and will receive £120,000.
