Lisa Byrne reflects on society’s hunger for the ‘perfect’ look - and the treatments she is willing to try

Does anyone else think that a huge number of young women are transforming into clones of each other?

Before social media there were so many distinctive looks such as goth, hippy, preppie, punk – but now the trend seems to be the perfect ‘Instagram ready’ image. To achieve this, young women are getting work done to their faces and bodies through surgery or injections. Many call it ‘empowering’ to do whatever they want to their body, but is it really?

It is human nature to want to feel and look as attractive as you can be, which is why we spend a fortune on make-up and spa treatments. Investing in a product that will make us look and feel better helps produce an instant dopamine hit. I’m 54 and despite never having had botox, I’m certainly willing to try ‘tweakments’ as long as they produce a very natural e ect. Like everyone, I have features which I’m self-conscious about, such as the jowl and cheek area. There’s been huge hype

about a treatment called Morpheus8, so as it’s meant to tighten skin around the jawline, I decided to give it a go.

I visited Skin Doctor, which has clinics in Leeds and York, whose founder is the glamorous world-renowned dermatologist Dr Saleena Zimri. Skin Doctor’s lovely practitioner Holly performed three bouts of Morpheus8 on my skin – and I must be honest, I did find it slightly painful (do take painkillers beforehand). But thankfully Holly’s chat and banter really helped get me through each treatment. Fantastic results appeared just a few weeks post appointment as my skin was noticeably tighter around the jawline, so I’d highly recommend Morpheus8.

Over at one of the county’s most iconic salons, The Bothy on Mount Vale Drive in York, I tried a new procedure called HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) where tissue is targeted by focused waves. The gorgeous owner Amelia personally did my hour-long treatment which was utterly painless. Immediately my skin looked glowing and after six weeks I was thrilled to notice some amazing results around my lower face area.

I believe indulging in these occasional treatments, combined with relaxing facials and massages are the perfect way to contribute to your sense of inner beauty and wellness. But it’s essential not to obsess over looks. So many of the naturally beautiful celebrities I worked with when I edited OK! Magazine look totally removed from their former gorgeous selves. Natural beauty, enhanced by make-up and inner confidence, is always the best look.

My highlights for November…

Paul Weller

5 NOVEMBER, ST GEORGE’S HALL BRADFORD

In the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary music, few artists possess the enduring influence and innovative spirit of Paul Weller. A recording career that began in 1977 has now taking in the release of his 17th solo album and his 28th in total, with his recent release of 66. The album is quite a reflective and inward thinking album that pulls back the camera lens and shines a light on the way Weller’s creativity interacts with his wider world. It shows a music legend who has most certainly not lost his touch.

Reflection is an immersive artwork that combines vibrant colours and radiant light, creating a captivating sensory experience for YSP’s visitors to enjoy. Launching during Wakefield’s Our Year Light Up festival (15-17 November 2024), the much-loved 18th-century Chapel will be filled with endorphin-boosting light during the darker months. The artwork comprises hundreds of mirrored discs in 15 vivid colours that will carpet the Chapel’s main space. Set at different heights, they capture and emit natural and artificial light, reflecting architectural details that might otherwise go unnoticed, drenching the interior with colour. Dynamic and constantly changing through each day, the reflections will respond to the weather and light quality outside. A pathway leads through the artwork, inviting visitors to become immersed in its radiating colour. Moving through the work adds a subtle element of performance and participation, and a heightened sensory awareness that brings a feeling of warmth and wellbeing.

Liz says: “Yorkshire Sculpture Park has always been a part of my life in many different ways. Exhibiting at the Park feels like a pivotal moment and like I have come full circle. Living locally, I was taken to YSP as a child back in the 80s and 90s. I am beyond delighted to be exhibiting my work. I look forward to seeing visitors' reactions to the coloured reflections and changing light in the space.”

“I have yet to play anyone from North Yorkshire”

Trial & TRIBULATIONS

Yorkshire-raised Nathalie Armin is back on our screens in Showtrial, the latest role in an eclectic career that has wowed on the stage and screen

It’s a sign of how Nathalie Armin’s career is thriving that at the time of this interview she was finishing a run on the stage of London’s Almeida Theatre, before jetting o to Budapest filming a new adaptation of the Maigret novels, all happening as she appears on our TV screens in the second season of the critically acclaimed Showtrial. Things are looking good.

“A slow burn, but varied and rewarding,” is how she describes her acting career to date. “And even though there’s still a way to go, the roles for women are getting better. There were times at the beginning where it felt like I was always going to be limited to a certain type of casting, but that has changed and fortunately there’s more choice now. I still haven’t played anyone from North Yorkshire though.”

She says the last point with a smile on her face, a nod to her upbringing. “I look back on my childhood very fondly,” she says. “There was a group of local children and we all played together. We were neighbours and in and out of each other’s houses daily. We moved around a lot when I was growing up; I was shy but had to adapt to new social situations

quickly. The first time I met my group of friends in Acklam, they spoke to me through a gap in the fence of our adjoining gardens. They misheard my name as “Leslie” and I was too shy to correct them, for weeks.

“I really remember misty walks up Roseberry Topping, the smell of the woods, Cleveland Hills,” she continues. “We had a beck in the woods near my house and we would swing from a rope over it. My rope swinging skills were pretty finely honed. Though I do remember having to trudge home in soaking wet clothes on many occasions. I think you probably got extra points if you fell in.”

Was drama an outlet for Nathalie from an early age? “As far back as I can remember, yes,” she nods. “It pretty much started with playing Mary and a Shepherd in the school nativity. According to my dad, my Shepherd was passable, but I was a ‘too bossy’ Mary. I didn’t have too many opportunities to express myself until I discovered the Teeside Indie scene, which was about as theatrical as it gets. This was the late 80s – when it came to makeup, more was definitely more. It was a hedonistic

time and the music of the period was so varied and galvanising. I sang in a couple of bands but sadly lacked the ‘swagger’. Then I joined Cleveland Youth Theatre for a production of HAIR. I wish I still had the photos. We were supposed to be late 60s hippies, but pretty much everyone fashioned their look via New Romantic or Goth.”

Things got serious when she moved to London at 18 to venture to drama school. “I was homesick, but also very excited to be starting drama school,” she says on that time. “But it’s surprising what you end up missing the most. For me it was Northern accents. When I first moved to London, I briefly lived in the East End, I can’t remember if it was Bow or Romford and I found myself really resistant to the East End accent. I love it now of course. I also really missed my older brother, who I’m still very close to and who still lives in the North East.”

And her first part out of drama school? “An episode of Casualty. My hair got caught in some factory machinery and I got scalped!”

A hair raising start, but Nathalie has built up a pretty impressive CV since, especially in the theatre. She previously

starred alongside James Norton in the award-winning A Little Life in London’s West End, and her theatrical repertoire includes powerful performances in Force Majeure (Donmar Warehouse), Behind The Beautiful Forevers (National Theatre), and Othello (RSC). She has also impressed audiences in The Doctor (Almeida), Anna (National Theatre), and Ralegh: The Treason Trial (Sam Wanamaker Playhouse: Shakespeare’s Globe).

“It’s been said many times but the live element is thrilling – the spontaneity, the having to adapt to unpredictable circumstances in the moment always keeps you on your toes,”

“It's nice when you get to play characters who bare their teeth”

Nathalie says on the joy of the stage. “And of course the relationship with the audience. The entire meaning of a scene can change depending on how an audience responds to it.”

I remark that I spent a decade working just around the corner from the Almeida Theatre and to this day feel very few spaces come close to it. “I’ve done three plays there now and it’s a terrific space to perform in. Intimate but not claustrophobic and their seasons are always packed with food for thought. I’ve definitely seen some of my favourite productions there.” TV, too, has thrown up intriguing roles for Nathalie, such as when she left her mark with BBC Three comedy Juice – “I played the sadistic boss, it’s nice when you get to play characters who bare their teeth a bit, albeit in di erent ways” – as well as starring alongside Lesley Manville in Magpie Murders, and parts in Too Close, Marcella, Vera and Unforgotten. Now, though, Showtrial takes centre stage. Nathalie portrays Leila Hassoun-Kenny, a rigorous CPS lawyer leading the case against the accused, co-leading the series alongside Adeel Akhtar (Sherwood) and Michael Socha (The Gallows Pole). The story will once again

centre around a hotly contested criminal trial that divides the nation and takes place in the full glare of the media spotlight.

“The writing is excellent and I loved season one,” Nathalie says of the attraction to the part. “Also, I couldn’t wait to get in the ring with those brilliant actors. I had to do quite a lot of research. I had to learn what the Crown Prosecution does and how likely they are to bring a case to court. I think it’s a thrilling story with some complex, challenging questions at the heart of it.”

She may be busy filming in Budapest now, but when back in the UK does she get back up to Yorkshire? “I don’t get back as often as I’d like but it’s always lovely when I do. I make sure my brother takes me to some of our old stamping grounds – places like Yarm and Scarborough. And nowhere does better fish and chips than Whitby. I definitely miss that.” And with that North Yorkshire role still to be ticked o , she may need to do a spot of research back up this way too.

Showtrial season 2 is on BBC One now, every Sunday at 9pm

YARM

STAR of the SHOW

In November, Jason Donovan is set to thrill theatre audiences at She eld’s Lyceum. He tells us what we can expect to see

Jason Donovan is making a much anticipated return to one of his most famous roles, playing Frank-NFurter in Richard O’Brien’s anarchic musical, The Rocky Horror Show. So, the question has to be: why? “In a nutshell,” he says, “I’m a fan. I love the show; I love the music; I love the character. I was touring my own show about five years ago and included Sweet Transvestite from Rocky as a key moment in my musical career. It went down a storm.”

He subsequently emailed producer Howard Panter saying that he’d read there was to be a 50th anniversary production of Rocky Horror and he’d love to be involved. And so it came to pass: first in Sydney and Melbourne and now via an extensive UK tour.

The Rocky Horror Show is a musical with music, lyrics and book by Richard O'Brien. A humorous tribute to various B movies associated with the science fiction and horror genres from the 1930s to the early 1960s, the musical tells the story of a newly engaged, clean-cut couple getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite scientist, Dr Frank-N-Furter, unveiling his

new creation, Rocky, a Frankenstein-style monster in the form of an artificially-made, fully-grown, physically perfect muscle man complete with blond hair and a tan.

The show was produced and directed by Jim Sharman. The original London production premièred at the Royal Court Theatre (Upstairs) on 19 June 1973. It later moved to several other locations in London and closed on 13 September 1980. The show ran for a total of 2,960 performances. On the 50th anniversary of the musical in 2023, it is said the production had been performed in 20 di erent languages and seen by 30 million people globally.

Jason has graduated from small-screen fame as Scott in the long-running Australian soap, Neighbours, to chart-topping pop stardom and now, among much else, as a stalwart of musical and straight theatre in a diverse number of productions.

He played Joseph in the original production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (returning as Pharaoh in the 2019 revival and subsequently on tour). He was in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts, has had two stabs at playing drag artist

Mitzi in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. He also played music mogul Sam Phillips in Million Dollar Quartet, the demon barber of Fleet Street himself in Sweeney Todd and Lionel Logue in The King’s Speech. It’s quite the CV.

But it is Dr Frank-N-Furter who occupies a special place in his heart. “One of the reasons I love Rocky is because it’s a short show,” he says – and nor is he joking. “It says everything it needs to say and nothing more. There’s no unnecessary padding. It means nobody gets bored and you leave them wanting more.”

Touring at any age is demanding and Jason is about to embark on a fairly punishing schedule, but he makes light of it. “On tour, I wake up a little later; there are no domestic chores to tackle – no trimming the ivy or doing the washing. And I’m a seasoned professional when it comes to locating any M&S or Waitrose.

“I’ve reached a point of great contentment,” he adds . “As long as I have my family and my health, as long as I have a good life/ work balance, I’m happy. I like to think I work to live, not the other way around.”

The Rocky Horror Show is at She eld’s Lyceum from 25-30 November. For tickets, visit she eldtheatres.co.uk

Why we love

From being at the centre of the English Civil War, to today being a renowned cultural hub, the West Yorkshire city has a fascinating history

Wakefield

Wakefield is a historic city in West Yorkshire, which has played a pivotal role in the region’s political, economic, and cultural development.

The earliest known settlement in Wakefield dates back to the Roman period, though the area may have been inhabited by earlier Celtic tribes. By the 9th century, Wakefield was a small Anglo-Saxon settlement. Its name is thought to derive from the Old English “Wacu” meaning “watch” or “wake”, and “feld” meaning “field”, suggesting that it was a place of observation or gathering.

Wakefield’s prominence grew in the medieval period, particularly after the Norman Conquest in 1066. It was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Wachefeld”, a manor held by the King. At the time, it had a church and a mill, and its strategic location near the River Calder helped it become an important market town. The construction of Sandal Castle, a key

Norman fortification built in the 12th century, further cemented Wakefield’s significance.

The town developed a thriving wool trade during the Middle Ages. Wakefield became one of the centres of the woollen cloth industry, which brought prosperity to the region. It was granted a royal charter in 1203 by King John, allowing it to hold a market.

The Wakefield Market quickly became one of the most significant in northern England, attracting traders from across the country.

Wakefield was closely associated with the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century, particularly through the Battle of Wakefield in 1460. This battle was a decisive moment in the conflict between the House of York and the House of Lancaster. Richard, Duke of York, was killed at Sandal Castle during the battle, a turning point in the struggle for the English throne.

In the 17th century, Wakefield was caught up in the English Civil War between the

Royalists and Parliamentarians. Sandal Castle was a stronghold for the Royalists, but it was besieged and eventually fell to Parliamentary forces. The castle was later dismantled, and its ruins remain a symbol of Wakefield’s historical significance.

The Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries transformed Wakefield into an industrial hub, and it also became known for its production of rhubarb during this period, with the area earning the nickname “The Rhubarb Triangle”. Rhubarb was grown in large quantities and transported to London and beyond.

In the 20th century, Wakefield’s industries began to decline, particularly with the closure of coal mines in the late 20th century as part of the broader deindustrialization in the UK. However, the city has since undergone significant regeneration. Today, Wakefield is a vibrant cultural and commercial centre.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

Wakefield o ers a variety of attractions and activities for visitors, from historical landmarks to cultural institutions and outdoor experiences.

Commenting on the award of five AA rosettes, Michael says: “Being awarded five AA rosettes is an incredible honour for us. This award is testament to the dedication, passion, and hard work displayed by our entire team. It signifies recognition of our relentless pursuit of culinary excellence and innovation, and, for me, personally, it validates our commitment to delivering exceptional dining experiences to our guests. WINTER SKIN

GLOW UP

Dr Nyla Raja of Dr Nyla Medispa Cheshire explains how to protect your skin this winter

DR NYLA RAJA SPORTING THE ILLUMINATING EYE CREAM

Keeping your complexion on point throughout the winter months can be challenging.

Founder and Medical Director of award-winning Doctor Nyla Medispa, Dr Nyla Raja, explains: “Winter is a magical time of year, with seasonal celebrations filling our social calendars. However, a combination of seasonal stress, over-indulgence, and cold weather conditions can a ect our skin health leaving us with skin that’s dull, dehydrated, and irritated. It’s therefore important to protect skin throughout the winter months so that the skin barrier is maintained, enabling the skin to retain its natural glow.

“One of the best things you can do for your skin throughout this period is to increase the skin’s hydration. This not only means drinking more water, but also adjusting the products you use to suit the needs of the season. Switching up your moisturiser to one that’s more oil based is beneficial as it increases hydration levels and counteracts dehydrating e ects such as lack of humidity, indoor heating, and bathing in hot water. SPF is also essential.

Not just for summer, wearing SPF daily is just as crucial throughout the winter months when UV damage can still occur.

“Using active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides and peptides that maximise hydration, protect the skin barrier and reduce inflammation is key as they help to nourish the skin throughout winter when it’s often at its most sensitive. This is especially relevant for individuals with inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis who naturally have drier skin and may need to use their emollients more regularly at this time of year.”

A highly respected and much sought after cosmetic dermatology GP, considered to be one of the top cosmetic doctors in the country, Dr Nyla has practiced medicine for 20+ years and has personally delivered over 200,000 treatments with exceptional results. A firm favourite with TV personalities, well-known celebrity figures and the media, her Cheshire clinic is home to some of the most sophisticated medical aesthetic technologies that the industry has to o er.

Dr Nyla continues: “In addition to good skincare practices, advanced skincare treatments can also help to manage the e ects of winter and get the skin glowing in advance of the festive season. It’s ideal to start as far ahead as possible as many require a course of treatments for the most e ective outcomes. Some of my favourite treatments to super-charge your winter glow up include:

ENVY FACIAL

HEAD START

Neck pain is a common 21st century ailment, but expert spine consultant Dan Fagan says help is at hand

Apain in the neck is no joke. A damaged disc resulting in inflammation around the nerve can lead to further complications, such as tingling, numbness, and even weakness in the arm or hand. And if physiotherapy or chiropractic therapy hasn’t helped you, there’s a very good chance that a simple injection or surgery will.

Expert spine consultant Dan Fagan is one of very few spinal surgeons in Yorkshire and the North East who has a wealth of experience in this type of neck surgery. “I’ve seen many patients with this condition, and surgical outcomes, where physiotherapy hasn’t fixed the problem, are very good,” he says. “Neck pain can a ect your ability to work, to enjoy sports, and just live your daily life. Many patients are choosing to self-pay and be treated privately for things like slipped discs because it’s much quicker, procedures are less invasive, and recovery is much faster.”

Physiotherapy is often the first course of action when someone is experiencing neck pain – most often due to a trapped nerve caused by a slipped disc. When this fails to relieve the problem, the next step might be injections around the root nerve to ascertain what is causing the pain. In 70 per cent of instances, this settles down the inflammation. However, where the pain continues and is having an impact on health and quality of life, an operation may bring the relief needed to get back to a full life without pain.

Dan explains that it is usually the C5 and C6 vertebrae that are a ected, and he specialises in two distinct procedures – disc replacement, and fusion of the vertebrae –which are fully discussed with each patient to find the best course of action for them.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is the traditional procedure where the damaged disc is removed and replaced with a lozenge-shaped cage shaped like the disc, along with some artificial bone graft that, over time, fuses the two vertebrae together.

As technology has moved on, Dan also o ers Total Disc Replacement. In this procedure, rather than doing a fusion of the vertebrae, the disc itself is replaced with an artificial one that mimics the natural disc and helps to protect the rest of the neck from further wear and tear.

In most instances, the procedure takes between one and two hours, with the patient remaining in hospital overnight for observation. After that, they can resume normal life within a couple of weeks, although Dan warns against rushing back to work too quickly.

“Generally, following the operation, people feel so well that they don’t rest long enough,” he says. “But the worst position, post-surgery, is a forward-leaning position. Many of my patients are busy people who want to keep themselves occupied, so I might encourage them to try something new, like learning another language during their recovery period!”

Dan has his own private practice –SpineArt, based in Yarm – and also works from Woodlands Hospital, Darlington, Nu eld Tees Hospital, Stockton, and runs a clinic in Harrogate, seeing patients from across the North East and Yorkshire.

“Although I do get referrals, many of my patients have either been told that they need a disc replacement, or have researched it themselves, but are struggling to get anything done. I can o er a further opinion, and can arrange the surgery for them, if that is what is going to help them,” he explains.

If you would like to arrange a consultation, please contact Dan Fagan’s secretary, Beverley Johnston, on 07539 330360 or email secretary@spineart.org. Read more at www.spineart.org

Creative Director, Rachel Usher, founded her design practice in 2012 and is a multi-award-winning interior designer, recognised within her field and holds full SBID (Society of British and International Interior Design) accreditation.

The success of the studio so far is undeniably related to Rachel’s strong design perspective and creative direction, where her approach to design goes far deeper than aesthetics, unravelling the intangible emotional benefits of a space, and how a space should improve the way in which you live within it is her primary pursuit.

Rachel and the wider studio team take the important time needed to truly understand all clients, their personalities and individual lifestyles, viewing this time as an integral element within the interior design journey. Getting to know clients is a key focus for the RU studio, they believe that the success of any interior design is how the space transforms the clients' relationship and interaction with their built environment, a profound understanding that the spaces we occupy have a direct impact upon our emotional wellbeing.

Absolutely ventured out to Bawtry to meet Rachel and find out about how a career about turn led to the creation of what became a hugely successful design practice.

Q Were you a creative child?

A Yes I was, my favourite subject in school was art, and it sounds cliché but I was that child who kept re-arranging their bedroom. Weirdly, aside from moving furniture around, I used to like to create displays, I used to dream about creating window displays like you see in Harrods. At the time I just chalked all of that up as what most kids do, I just saw it as role playing, like how many children ever become an astronaut right?

Q When did the prospect of being a designer become a serious career consideration?

A That’s a di cult one. I took some time out from my previous career to regroup myself, I had reached a crossroads and needed to think about my long term future and so I embarked upon a career break without any kind of clear plan. I had previously, for no reason other than personal interest, embarked upon a degree in Professional Interior Design, sadly the provider of the course had ceased trading and so I was never able to complete the course. However, interior design had remained something that I had more than a passing interest in.

Q Before launching your own practice, what experience had you built up in the industry?

A During my career break, a local painter, who was a friend of my husband’s, asked if I could help with a small project. That led to another introduction, and suddenly I found myself handling a much bigger project, it was a huge learning curve for me, and I had to learn a lot – and I had to learn it fast!

Q What inspired you to launch your practice in 2012?

A In my previous senior leadership role, strict rules prevented me from working for anyone

else, but there were no restrictions on running my own business. This allowed me to explore the industry on my own terms. The autonomy of owning my own company was something I valued greatly.

Q Were there any challenges in getting things o the ground?

A Starting any new business comes with risks, and it can feel quite isolating. The interior design industry at that time was very closed o , and learning the business side of things felt like trying to unlock a secret. I wrongly assumed that having a showroom was essential, but I soon realised it was a time and cashflow drain. After three years, I shifted to a studio model, which allowed me to focus entirely on design.

Q How did you want to be di erent?

A I’ve never worried too much about what others think. Design is subjective, and I’ve always trusted my own instincts. For me, great design is more about creating a mood and evoking a feeling than it is about objects. It’s about light, sound, scent, and how a space connects with its environment and the people living in it.

Q By this point, what role had Yorkshire played in your life?

A I moved to Yorkshire at the age of 10,

though I was born in Hull when it wasn’t part of the county! I remember adapting quickly to the local accent. Yorkshire is where I’ve raised my children and worked as a police o cer for almost 20 years. I’ve seen both the wealthiest and the most deprived areas of the county, and it’s shaped my perspective on the importance of having a safe space that feels like a sanctuary and somewhere to call home.

Q What do you like about having a space in Bawtry?

A Bawtry has served me well. It’s a thriving business community, just 15 minutes from a direct train to London and close to the motorway, which makes it an ideal location for my business.

Q To date, have there been some Yorkshire projects that really stand out for you and if so why?

A While we treat the details of our clients' residences with sensitivity, we’ve worked on some stunning historical buildings and contemporary homes. Our project at Macks Place and a new one in Boston Spa, which we’re excited to photograph soon, stand out in particular.

Q Is Yorkshire itself an inspiration to you and your work?

A Context is always an important part of our

work, and we try to draw references from the landscape that sits outside so that a space feels relevant and connected to its surroundings.

Q How would you say your practice has evolved since 2012?

A Beyond recognition. We have a great team and we focus upon delivering luxury projects that require a greater attention to detail and allow us to deliver an exceptional and enduring finish. We know that this is when we deliver our very best work and provides the greatest value to our clients' projects.

Q How do you like to work with clients?

A I love to work with a client who is excited by the possibilities of what can be created, a vision which is, as yet, beyond their imagination. We love it when clients trust us to design without limitations. The client relationship is hugely important and sharing a synergy for both design and what we can deliver in terms of quality is important to a project’s success.

Q What kind of exciting projects are you working on now?

A We have a fantastic commercial project in the pipeline, though I can’t share too much at the moment. We’re also working on several high-end residential projects in Yorkshire and a few London apartments. I’m particularly enjoying working with bespoke finishes and custom-made furniture for our clients.

Q What are your hopes for the future?

A I’m focused on building a long-term future for my team, who are deeply invested in the success of the studio. Through my other company, The Business of Interiors, I’m also mentoring other designers, hosting events, and running a podcast. My aim is to leave the industry in a better place than I found it.

How Colours of Arley is bringing their signature stripes to a variety of projects

Colours of Arley and journalist and designer Jess Alavi-Ellis first teamed up in 2023 following their shared love for colour, vintage charm and sustainable materials to create the hugely successful Vintage Drop. The collection gave time-worn furniture a new lease of stripey life. The debut ‘Drop’ was in high demand with the first pieces selling within minutes of going live. Returning to vintage markets, antique sellers and trawling auctions, they sourced five pieces to restore and expertly reupholster in Colours of Arley signature stripes. The second installment, Vintage Drop 2.0, launched with a set of bar stools, a play chair, a sofa, a pet bed and an armchair. Not only does the collection give new life to preloved furniture, but the pieces are all upholstered in Colours of Arley signature recycled fabrics, which are made from bottles that have been diverted from landfill.

Bringing the South of France to East London, Colours of Arley teamed up with French design studio Mattina Moderna, to create a capsule collection of beautiful striped ‘La Petite Boîte’ lamps. The home of Mattina Moderna designer and co-founder, Clémentine Poncin, was the source of inspiration for this joint venture which celebrates the best of

the French Riviera. Reflecting the tones of the sand, sun and sea, as well as olive trees, lemon groves and the iconic, Villa Ephrussi, the chosen stripes of the lamps are reminiscent of Clementine’s treasured sundrenched coast. Mattina Moderna was founded in 2020 by a mother-daughter duo who weave together art and design into their creations. Clémentine Says: “Mattina Moderna is a slow design studio, and for us, that means creating a limited series of products that are made with heart, extreme care and are hand assembled in Nice by my mother. We are passionate about creating products that are timeless and humble, rooted in tradition and have a shared past. Collaborating with Colours of Arley felt very natural and the perfect fit for us. From the custom o ering, to limited series, love for colour combinations, and of course the story behind the stripes, our collection of lamps share a story of Nice.”

Colours of Arley’s Louisa Tratalos explains: “The cubic shape of ‘La Petite Boîte’ lamp lends itself beautifully to our signature stripes and each colour combination tells a story of the Cote D’Azur. Timeless and e ortless, the lamps will add a playful element to any room.” Combining character and sustainability, the fabric is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles.

Double VISION

After a combined 14 years of service at Harrogate Ladies’ College, Paul Dwyer and Siobhan Scully have taken on the roles of Deputy Heads Academic. Absolutely meets them both

Paul Dwyer

Q What position did you start in at Harrogate Ladies’ College?

A I was appointed as Head of Mathematics in 2018 and I have since really enjoyed working with the fantastic group of Maths teachers we have here. We still have the same group of six teachers now, which is testament to the team environment and what a great school Harrogate Ladies’ College is to work in. In 2020 I was appointed as Joint Head of Sixth Form, whilst continuing as Head of Maths. Moving into pastoral leadership was a steep learning curve, but helping shape so many futures through advising students about the UCAS process and their university courses/ destinations was incredibly rewarding.

Q What will your new role as Deputy Head Academic involve?

A My sub-title is Pupil Progress, so my main responsibility is making sure that all students reach their academic potential. Practically this means working closely with all our Heads of Department and teaching sta about assessment and monitoring of progress, reporting to parents and ensuring we intervene proactively wherever needed. I also work closely with the HR manager with everything relating to sta ng, recruitment, and the appraisal of teaching sta .

Q What are you excited about the most with taking on this new role?

A The pastoral care at Harrogate Ladies’ College is second to none and our Flourish programme is a really cohesive way of ensuring students feel safe and cared for.

TOM ARBER

I am now very excited to be in a position to make sure that our academic provision is wrapped up in a similar way.

Q How would you describe College life?

A It is a friendly and welcoming place where students are free to be themselves and are pushed to make the most of all the opportunities available to them. It is a melting pot of cultures and backgrounds that come together as one community where respect and kindness are truly valued. As an all-girls school we pride ourselves on removing all barriers and not conforming to stereotypes. Our WiSE (Women in Science and Engineering) programme is a good example of this; it truly highlights the progress and active participation our students make in all STEM subjects, particularly compared to other girls in co-ed environments.

“Students are free to be themselves and are pushed to make the most of all the opportunities available to them”

Siobhan Scully

Q Why were you originally attracted to working at Harrogate Ladies’ College?

A Harrogate is a wonderful place to work and learn, so when the job came up at Harrogate Ladies’ College, I was excited to see what the school felt like. As soon as I walked in, I noticed the sense of community and I was delighted to be o ered a job here. Harrogate Ladies’ College is a wonderful place to work, it has a kindness that runs through the corridors and through the playground, and in short escorts me from my car each day. This is a unique environment, and the sense of community here is truly wholesome.

Q What will your new role as Deputy Head Academic involve?

A My new responsibilities involve working with all pupils and sta to ensure that their learning is maximised. Across all schools, our aim is to ensure that pupils make the most progress and achieve their goals. Harrogate Ladies’ College is very fortunate to have world class teachers, and this job allows me the time and opportunity to share their expertise so

that pupils, of all abilities, can leave school each day having made progress. Alongside this, I want to ensure that the “Be Inspired” careers programme and our digital strategy prepares everyone, as much as we can, for the unknowns of tomorrow’s workplace.

Q What are you excited about the most with taking on this new role?

A Fellow teachers will know what I mean when I say this, but there is no greater joy than being in an excellent lesson where everyone takes ownership of their learning. This responsibility gives me the opportunity to share and develop our expertise across all schools (ages 2-18), whilst working with Paul to help individual students that may need extra guidance to progress more e ectively. Our school community is very unique in that it is large enough to allow all pupils to learn with a wide range of experiences (and fun), both inside and outside the classroom, but it is also small enough for us to work with each pupil so that they can excel. We very much believe that this tailored experience will help all pupils and sta achieve their potential.

PAUL DWYER AND SIOBHAN SCULLY

King’s Magna Middle School (KM), part of Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate in York, is best known for its state-ofthe-art facilities, exceptional extra-curricular o ering, and its highly respected position as the main feeder school into the highranking QE College and QE Faculty schools. From Year 6, it o ers a programme of individual support and study skills sessions to best prepare students for success at GCSE and A-level, the results of which are evident in how the two senior schools perform, with the combined percentages for 2024 at 78% A*/A at A-level, 73% Distinction in BTECs and 62% grades 7-9 in GCSEs. KM is always looking to the future. Each year new opportunities are added to the curriculum options, of which students in Years 6-9 choose two choices to focus on each term. In Year 9, students choose an additional four ‘specialisms’ such as Business

THE NEXT LEVEL

Head of King’s Magna Middle School, Joe Birchall, explains what’s new this year

Studies, Computing, Design Technology, Home Economics and Photography. This year, three ‘higher-level challenge’ options have been added – two mathematics choices and one science. The science option works towards a Higher Project Qualification (HPQ), which stretches and challenges students through the requirement of independent research on a topic that becomes a written report, an artefact or a production. The HPQ is GCSE level and candidates are awarded the equivalent of a short-course GCSE upon completion, which can also be used to apply for the nationally-recognised CREST Silver award. The maths-focused option is divided into two routes; ‘Stretch’ which pushes those that are academically gifted, and ‘Support’, which brings students up to a higher mathematics level. The ‘Stretch’ programme covers topics from the Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies including analysis of data, modelling and estimation, critical path analysis, project

work, and cost-benefit analysis. Whereas the ‘Support’ pathway allows students to learn, and be examined in, the Level 1 Functional Skills Mathematics qualification. New for 2024, KM has made the decision to invest heavily in the core subjects of mathematics and English by timetabling a lesson of each into every single school day in addition to o ering single science lessons in biology, chemistry, and physics. This further benefits students in their transition to GCSE and A-Level study by providing a solid Key Stage 3 foundation. Lastly, in addition to o ering eight bus routes throughout Yorkshire, KM has launched free wraparound care from 7.30am-6pm for all students. This allows pupils additional social time, access to facilities, and further academic support whilst o ering parents more flexibility.

YORK Ice Trail

It has been announced that the winter spectacle will return in early February

2025

The much-anticipated York Ice Trail, organised by Make It York, returns for another spectacular year, transforming the historic city into a glittering winter wonderland. Mark your calendars for the weekend of 1 and 2 February 2025, as York’s streets will once again come alive with a stunning array of ice sculptures on display.

This year’s theme narrates tales of ‘Origins’ and promises to captivate visitors of all ages. Wander through York’s ancient streets and uncover icy creations, inspired by stories untold or those rumoured to be true. From mythical creatures and heritage inspired designs, each sculpture will tell a unique story.

As part of the extraordinary weekend, discover origin tales brought to life with live carvings, interactive experiences and the chance to win great prizes.

There will be over 20 ice sculptures on display crafted by Icebox, the UK and Europe’s leading ice sculpture specialist. These intricate sculptures will be placed at various iconic locations throughout the city. Organised by Make It York, the York Ice Trail is a free event open to all from 10.30am to 4pm on both days, allowing plenty of time to immerse yourself in the magic.

Sarah Loftus, Managing Director of Make It York, says: “We’re thrilled to announce the return of the York Ice Trail with the new theme of Origins. The popular trail o ers the perfect

opportunity to explore York’s historic charm, and we can’t wait to share these stunning creations with the community and visitors alike.”

The York Ice Trail in February earlier this year was a huge success with the theme of ‘City of Dreams’. Over 67,000 visitors headed to the city over the weekend of the Ice Trail, with 87% visiting York specifically for the trail. The online survey showed that 9 out of 10 visitors would recommend the trail to family and friends, and would want to return for the next Ice Trail. The free event also had a positive impact on businesses in the city, with 75% of visitors eating out or drinking in cafes, bars and restaurants, plus 50% were likely to go shopping.
