GREATEST SHOW IN EARTH
LIVE AT HARLOW CARR
Yorkshire YATTER
Lisa Byrne recounts the inspiring story of the Midgley family and their mission to spread joy
Iam in absolute awe of people who go through the most heartbreaking events that life can throw at them to not only survive, but attempt to make life better for others who are su ering. The late Rob Burrow and his incredible family and friends are a prime example of how bravery is such a powerful force. They’ve transformed their unimaginable pain into a quest to build an amazing Motor Neurone Centre in Leeds. I recently met a glamorous celebrity make-up artist who’s on a mission to set up a retreat in the Yorkshire countryside for families who have a loved one going through life-limiting treatment. With her incessant joy for life and laughter, no-one would guess that Virna Midgley has been through the worst few years any parent could su er after her 19-year-old son, Jordan, died in 2016 from a rare form of cancer. During one of the last treasured conversations Virna
had with her son, Jordan expressed how keen he was on creating a place where families – where a member was a icted with a life-limiting illness – could enjoy priceless experiences, away from the clinical environment of a hospital ward or hospice.
The passionate mother of two older boys (Jordan was the youngest of three) is determined to raise the £1.7m to open the sanctuary ‘Jordan’s Retreat’ in the stunning Yorkshire Dales. “Jordan and I spoke about it a lot as he was so keen to spend time in nature,” Virna says. “We tried to go away for a few days when he was in remission, but were turned down by two charities because he was not in active treatment. This was heartbreaking, and the morning Jordan died, I never heard from anyone medically again.”
Virna, who lives with her partner Simon in Kirk Hammerton, hopes to host various holistic workshops at the retreat such as yoga, massage and meditation as well as letting visiting families care for alpacas, goats and chickens. “We have dogs, and I cannot tell you how much they have helped during tortuous times.”
She admits that working on a mission to create Jordan’s Retreat has proved therapeutic. “I can’t go back to my old life as it’s disappeared. But being around family, friends, my animals and working on my vision for a place for families facing lifelimiting conditions is o ering some solace.
“It’s so easy to sleepwalk through life, not grasping onto and recognising the precious moments which need to be held so close to our hearts.”

Absolutely Yorkshire recently took a visit to Yorkshire’s new and exclusive events venue, The Old Kitchens at Birdsall House. Totally unique to anything else in the North of England, it’s a place to make your own history, whether a birthday party, anniversary celebration, wedding reception or launch.
Transformed from the House’s old Victorian kitchens, there’s space for catching up with friends and family, a double height dancefloor, a bar and seating area with the “wow” factor and room for dining. There’s a sense of 1920’s prohibition with the feel of a private members club behind a hidden entrance, accessed from the stately home’s garden.

he last gang in town The Libertines, who released their hotly anticipated new album All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade in March, have announced a UK and Irish tour. The Libertines’ once-seennever-forgotten live shows are here to save humanity from holograms, virtual reality and AI, so switch o your pocket-held marketing machine and go and experience raw analogue euphoria at the hands of these delirious musical chaos-mongers. academymusicgroup.com
The inspiration for The Old Kitchens came from the rooms themselves. Keeping as many historical elements of the building as possible was important to the team. Lady Cara Willoughby, who led the renovation, has taken time to find products that work with materials already in situ, all the décor is very much in keeping with the age of the building. In the main house, there is original wallpaper by William Morris and so this theme has been continued downstairs, in keeping with the upstairs rooms but with a 21st century update. The rest of the house, which includes a ballroom and dining room, is o en used for weddings (there’s even a Church within the grounds), but this impressive renovation means wedding parties can now dance into the night. Accommodating up to 200 guests and fully accessible, if you’re planning an event for 2025 and beyond, remember the best parties happen in The Old Kitchens. 01944 316 003

Good SPORT
Emma Jones lets Absolutely into her dream home project and discusses her love of Leeds United
Q Did you have a sporty upbringing?
A Yes! My whole family has always loved sport. My Grandad is extremely competitive and he was forever encouraging us all to get involved with sport. I think team sport in particular is a great way to help build confidence in children, as well as the obvious health benefits.
Q When did you catch the journalism bug?
A I have always been interested in people and their stories. My late Mum told me when I was a child that I’d make a good journalist because I was always asking people a million questions about their lives. That’s my favourite part of the job – getting to know people on a deeper level and understanding what made them who they are.
Q Did you have any grand plans when starting out for where your career would take you?
A Honestly, no. I trained in journalism before social media was really prevalent, so I had no idea of all the doors that would open and the way the landscape of the industry would change.
I often get asked what my five-year plan is and I don’t have one because I’m so happy doing what I’m doing. I think we’re all guilty of getting caught up in looking to the future, but I truly appreciate where I am right now, every day.
“Presenting on Leeds United TV is still the best job in the world”
Q How did you gradually become immersed in the world of sport journalism?
A I had done various bits of hosting at stadiums, so when I got the email to say there was a vacancy for a presenter at Leeds United, I jumped at the opportunity. I filmed myself doing a piece to camera and pretending to interview someone (there was no one there!) and sent it o straight away. I didn’t hear back, so I emailed every week until they eventually invited me in and agreed to let me be a part of the presenting line-up. That was six years ago and it’s still the best job in the world.
Q Do you think there was one role that kicked that side of your career all o ?
A It was 100% my role on LUTV. Before that I had only ever done radio presenting, so working on the club TV channel opened me up to a whole new world and I am forever grateful for that.
Q How did it feel to move in front of the cameras and start presenting football coverage?
A I was SO nervous. On my first day they told me to go pitch side and interview Eddie Gray and my heart was beating out of my chest as I approached him. He gave me the warmest hug and put me right at ease. After that, I enjoyed every moment.
Q What are your hopes for the new season?
A I think I share the same hopes as every Leeds fan, but I daren’t say it out
ELLAND ROAD
loud! We have a great squad, a brilliant manager and I truly believe in this team.
Q When did you move to Yorkshire and, today, what do you love most about it?
A I’ve spent half my life here and I absolutely love it! There are few places as beautiful as Yorkshire. It is such a privilege to have rolling hills and greenery on our doorstep. And of course, the people. I love living in a place where people talk to each other and look out for each other.
Q Can you pick out 3-4 places you love visiting across the county?
A Only 3-4?! I love the Chevin. It’s my place of peace. I often take my little dog, Teddy, there and just sit on a bench looking out at the wonderful views. Harrogate is one of my favourite days out. Every corner of that town is beautiful and I love a Fat Rascal from Bettys!
“This finally feels like my dream home”
I live not far from Ilkley and that’s another favourite place of mine. My twin brother came to visit me last week, so I took him for a walk up the Cow and Calf and then we wandered down the high street and he fell in love with the place too. And I can’t leave out Grassington. It’s like a postcard town! It’s one of those places that I go to and wander around for hours taking in all of its charm.
Q This interview appears in our Absolutely Home special, so perfect timing to look at your home project. When did you first come across the building?
A I saw the building a few years ago. We used to come walking near the house and I always
said it was my dream to live here. I didn’t believe it would actually happen though.
Q Why were you keen to own it?
A The building has so much history and I think it’s absolutely beautiful. It was the perfect canvas to create something magical. I just didn’t realise how time consuming and expensive the magic was going to be!
Q How much have you done to the property since?
A Everything! There’s only the bathrooms in this house that are yet to be touched. The entire kitchen was ripped out and refitted. All of the flooring, blinds, curtains, doors, and radiators have also been replaced and every room has gone through a make-over.
Q What still needs to be finished in the house?
THE CHEVIN
Q What have been the biggest challenges?
A Doing everything in some sort of order. I rushed into decorating the entire place, but then other work needed doing, which now means more redecorating. It’s been an expensive lesson, but it finally feels like a dream home.
Q What elements of the property do you love most?
A The windows! They’re the originals and they’re huge so they let so much light in. On the first viewing I ran over to them and I knew in that moment that I wanted this house. There’s also a big, original column running right through the middle of the house and I love how it’s a marker of the history of the building (and it also looks pretty cool!).
A The bathrooms. I designed them last year, but due to budgets and getting other work done, they’ve been put on the back burner. Hopefully by Christmas I’ll have the rainforest shower and standalone bath I’m dreaming of!
Q Home aside, what else does the future hold in store?
A That’s a big question! I am very content with my work/life balance at the moment. I often find myself taking mental screenshots of my life so that I can savour it for a day when things might be di erent, and reflect fondly. I hope the future holds more of the same. It’s a cliche, I know, but I hope the future is a happy one.

“When we do get together, we still make each other laugh”
Dates for the DIARY
Yorkshire-born Sir Michael Palin is taking to the stage to chat about a particularly pertinent period of his life. He talks to Absolutely about family, travel and Monty Python
By JAMES RAMPTON
Here’s an announcement that will delight Sir Michael Palin’s legions of fans: “I don't think I’m ever going to stop.”
The enormously popular presenter, comedy legend, bestselling author and actor is 81-years-old, but he shows absolutely no sign of slowing down. He is still twice as busy as people half his age.
The indefatigable star’s latest project is a brilliant new stage show. There and Back –The Diary Tour 2024 brings to life Michael’s forthcoming diary. Also called There and Back, it will be published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson on 26 September. Like Michael himself, it is captivating, compelling, charismatic, charming and comic. Talking to me in the run-up to the tour, he calls it, “70% comedy and 30% tragedy – much like life!”
The show is based on the fourth instalment of Michael’s acclaimed diaries, covering the years 1999 to 2009. As one millennium rolls over into the next and Michael moves into middle age, his schedule is fuller than ever. Drawing on rarely seen photos and video, he relives the landmark moments from the decade.
Michael takes us behind-the-scenes of his most productive period, at the same time as highlighting a wider world which is replete with infinite possibilities and new, unexpected perils.
Over two mesmerising hours, Michael recollects how the world was rocked by the successive seismic shocks of 9/11, 7/7 and the global financial crash. Employing the magnetism and warmth that have made him a beloved figure the world over, Michael recounts the minutiae of living in a world battered by such potent winds of change.
And yet amid all the tumult, there is one constant: Michael’s unquenchable inquisitiveness and endless thirst for adventure. The show tracks his life as he films four blockbuster travel documentaries – Hemingway Adventure, Sahara, Himalaya and New Europe – and reaches the height of his fame as a much-loved TV traveller.
The presenter also homes in on his domestic life and recounts how five years after the last of his children flew the nest, he began his most a ecting journey yet – as a devoted grandfather.
They say you should never meet your heroes, but that is not the case with Michael. He is as delightful in person as he is on stage
and screen. Not for nothing is he frequently described as the nicest man in showbiz. Michael, who still writes a daily diary, gives his own précis of the show. “It covers how my career panned out during that decade. I actually had no plans to carry on travelling at all. I wanted to go back to acting and writing. I was in fact writing a novel at the time. But I ended up being tempted back to globetrotting and in the end made a number of TV journeys that turned out to be among the best.”
Michael will also be talking about his enduring friendship with his fellow members of the Monty Python team. He says: “The best thing is, when we do get together, we still make each other laugh. That’s the basic thing which holds us together, our humour and our delight in laughter and the same kind of jokes.”
Assessing the cultural legacy of Monty Python – who have bequeathed to the world such timeless comedy moments as the “Dead Parrot” sketch – Michael recalls: “In the early noughties we were persuaded into creating a lot of Python collectibles. One of them was a wine called the Norwegian Blue Red. We actually printed a label with that on it.” With a laugh, he adds: “I realize my contribution to the world as it is today is as a parrot salesman. I never forget that!”
Another major topic in the show is Michael’s family life. “I think a good diary includes whatever is happening to you at the time, and a lot of my diaries are about being at home and how we all get on and how we are. So in these diaries, our last child leaves home, so it’s just my wife and I together. I turned 60 in 2003, and we discussed whether I would retire. Of course, I didn’t, but that was part of the family debate at the time.”
Is there an overarching theme to There and Back - The Diary Tour 2024? “One thing I talk about a lot is learning new things. I discuss what sort of longevity my work might have and whether I can keep going. There is lots of worrying about where I am going and making mistakes along the way.
“So it’s a holistic look at 11 years of my life when I was going from youthful exuberance into middle age. But the thing is, although I was middle aged, I didn’t stop. There seemed to be an awful lot going on. And I know that’s how it’s always going to be. I think I’ll die in harness!”
Michael is relishing the prospect of bringing There and Back – The Diary Tour 2024 to a theatre near you. “I love the theatre tour because it’s di erent every single night,” he explains. “I get bored very quickly just doing the same thing. But whenever you step on stage, it’s a di erent place and a di erent audience.
“Although you perform similar material at each show, it will be received in a di erent way by the audience every night. I enjoy the spontaneity of walking out on stage and changing things at the last minute. Also, you can actually see the people who like your material. On television, you don’t know who’s watching.”
What does Michael hope that audience members will be saying to each other as they leave the theatre? “They’ll be saying, ‘39 pounds! You must be joking!’ No, the great thing about doing these shows is that people come along because they know me. They’re not saying, ‘Who is this Michael Palin? He’s just reading bits out of his diary. Come on. He doesn’t jump through any flaming hoops or do any acrobatics.’ People who enjoy my work will be interested in the background to a lot of the major travel programmes that I did, how I decide what to do next, how I face challenges, and how I deal with getting older in a young person’s world.”
At the grand old age of 81, Michael’s ambitions can be summed up in the immortal words of Captain James T Kirk from Star Trek: “To explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. I’m driven by curiosity. It’s the same thing that David Attenborough always says drives him. He just wants to know more and learn more. You never, ever come to the stage where you say, ‘Right, I know it
all now’. Absolutely not. The more you ask, the more you realise how little you know.” He adds: “It keeps you healthy. Making programmes is very good for you mentally. You have to learn about a di erent way of life in totally di erent surroundings. You also have to be physically strong to do it. Filming is like a commando raid for three weeks. You just go in, get as much material as you can, and then come out again. I find that demanding and very exciting. I’ll do it until someone tells me to stop.”
There and Back – The Diary Tour 2024 is at York’s Grand Opera House on 3 October and Alhambra Bradford on 4 October. See more at TheMichaelPalin.com

Why we love
Hebden Bridge
From fast-flowing streams to being the centre of the LGBTQ+ community, the West Yorkshire town has quite the story to tell
Hebden Bridge, a small market town in West Yorkshire, has a rich history that reflects the broader changes in British society, from the Industrial Revolution to modern day cultural shifts. The origins of Hebden Bridge can be traced back to medieval times. The name “Hebden” is derived from the Old English words “heope”, meaning “rose-hip”, and “denu”, meaning “valley”, indicating the natural features of the area. The town itself began as a small settlement that grew around a bridge over the River Hebden, which was crucial for travellers and traders moving through the rugged Pennine landscape.
Hebden Bridge’s most significant transformation occurred during the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th and
early 19th centuries. The steep, fastflowing streams in the area were ideal for powering the newly invented waterframes and spinning machines, leading to the rapid development of textile mills. These mills produced woollen and cotton goods, and the town became known for its high-quality fustian cloth, a heavy-duty fabric that was widely used at the time.
The Industrial Revolution also led to significant population growth. Workers flocked to Hebden Bridge to take advantage of employment opportunities in the mills. The town’s layout changed to accommodate this influx, with rows of terraced houses built on the steep valley sides to house the mill workers. This gave the town its characteristic “doubledecker” appearance, where houses are stacked in tiers up the hillsides.
The expansion of the railway network in the 19th century further boosted Hebden
Bridge’s prosperity. The town became more accessible, facilitating trade and the movement of goods. By the late 19th century, Hebden Bridge was a thriving industrial town, with a vibrant community life centred around the mills, chapels, and local markets. Today, Hebden Bridge is known for its vibrant arts scene, independent shops, and inclusive community. It has become a hub for creative industries and a popular tourist destination, famous for its annual arts festival, the iconic Hebden Bridge Picture House, and its reputation as one of the UK’s most LGBTQ+ friendly towns.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO
Whether you’re a lover of the outdoors, a history bu , or an art enthusiast, Hebden Bridge o ers a variety of attractions and activities to suit every interest. The town is surrounded by some of the
most beautiful countryside in England, making it a paradise for walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers. The Pennine Way, one of Britain’s most famous long-distance footpaths, passes near Hebden Bridge, o ering breathtaking views of the rolling hills, moorlands, and valleys. A popular local walk is the route up to Hardcastle Crags, a stunning wooded valley managed by the National Trust. This area is often referred to as “Little Switzerland” due to its dense woodland, streams, and rocky outcrops. The centrepiece is Gibson Mill, a former cotton mill turned sustainability showcase, where visitors can learn about the history of the site and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. Hebden Bridge is steeped in history, and a visit to the nearby village of Heptonstall o ers a fascinating glimpse into the past. This well-preserved village, perched high above Hebden Bridge, has narrow cobbled streets, a ruined 13th century church, and
the grave of the American poet Sylvia Plath in the churchyard of St Thomas the Apostle. The Heptonstall Museum, housed in a former school building dating back to 1771, tells the story of the village and the wider area through a collection of artefacts, photographs, and exhibits.
Hebden Bridge is famous for its thriving arts and cultural scene. The town is home to numerous galleries, studios, and craft shops that showcase the work of local artists and makers. The Heart Gallery and Hope Gallery are particularly notable spots, o ering a curated selection of contemporary art, jewellery, ceramics, and textiles. Both regularly hosts exhibitions and events, making them a dynamic part of the town’s creative community.
The Hebden Bridge Arts Festival, held annually, is one of the town’s cultural highlights. The festival features a diverse program of music, theatre, visual arts, and spoken word performances, attracting artists and visitors from across the country. Another key event is the Hebden Bridge Handmade Parade, an exuberant community celebration that sees locals and visitors alike donning colourful costumes and parading through the streets with handmade puppets, masks, and sculptures.
A visit to Hebden Bridge wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the Hebden Bridge Picture House, one of the last remaining independent cinemas in the country. This historic cinema, which first opened in 1921, retains much of its original charm with its art deco interior and balcony seating. And, of course, Hebden Bridge plays a key part in the TV behemoth, Happy Valley.
Hebden Bridge is known for its independent shops and markets, o ering everything from vintage clothing and second-hand books to handmade crafts and organic produce. The Hebden Bridge Market, voted Britain’s Best Small Market
in 2016, operates four days a week, with each day featuring di erent types of stalls, including local food, crafts, and collectibles.
WHERE TO EAT & DRINK
The town boasts an array of dining options, from cosy cafes to gourmet restaurants, catering to a wide range of tastes and dietary preferences.
If you’re in the mood for something exotic, Hebden Bridge has you covered with a range of international cuisines. Aya Sophia, a familyrun Turkish restaurant, is a local favourite. With its warm, inviting ambiance and authentic Mediterranean menu, it’s perfect for a leisurely dinner. The meze platters are a highlight, o ering a delightful assortment of dips, breads, and grilled vegetables. The main courses, such as moussaka and lamb kofte, are equally impressive, bursting with rich, aromatic flavours.

Looking for a shiver down the spine this month? Yorkshire has plenty to add a little more chill to the air
Treasurer’s House
The Treasurer’s House in York is a historic building with a spine-chilling reputation. One of the most famous ghost sightings here is that of Roman soldiers marching through the cellar. First seen by a plumber in 1953, the ghostly figures are said to emerge from the walls at the height of an ancient Roman road beneath the house. This National Trust property regularly hosts ghost tours, where visitors can explore the dark cellars and hear tales of paranormal activity. The house also o ers themed evenings.
The Golden Fleece
York is widely regarded as one of the most haunted cities in England, and The Golden Fleece, a pub dating back to 1503, is no exception. This historic inn is rumoured to be haunted by at least 15 di erent spirits, including Lady Alice Peckett, the wife of a former mayor of York, and One-Eyed Jack, a 16th-century gentleman in a red coat. The pub holds regular ghost tours and themed nights, including séances and paranormal investigations.
Whitby Abbey
Perched high on a cli overlooking the North Sea, Whitby Abbey is not only famous for its association with Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but also for its haunting atmosphere. The ruins of this 7th century monastery are said to be haunted by a ghostly nun and a mysterious horseman who rides along the nearby cli s. Whitby Abbey hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including Halloween ghost walks and gothic music festivals, which allow visitors to experience the spooky atmosphere as the sun sets over the ruins.
Bolton Abbey
Bolton Abbey, set in the stunning Yorkshire Dales, is a place of serene beauty by day, but as night falls, its atmosphere turns eerie. The 12th century ruins are said to be haunted by a monk who appears at twilight. Legend has it that he walks the grounds in penance for a tragic love a air. Visitors can explore the abbey during special night-time events, including ghost tours that delve into the abbey’s darker history and the spectral sightings that have been reported here.
Castle Howard
Castle Howard, one of Britain’s grandest stately homes, is also one of Yorkshire’s most haunted. Built in the early 18th century, it has been the seat of the Howard family for over 300 years. Numerous spirits are said to roam the halls, including a mysterious lady in white and the ghost of a young boy who drowned in the estate’s lake. Castle Howard hosts a range of special events where you can explore the eerie atmosphere of the house after dark and perhaps encounter one of its spectral residents.
Skipton Castle
Skipton Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in England, and it has a haunting history to match. The castle has been a site of battles and sieges, and it is said to be haunted by the ghost of Lady Cli ord, who defended the castle during the English Civil War. Visitors can attend various events throughout the year, such as reenactments and historical tours, which sometimes include ghost walks that explore the darker corners of this ancient fortress.
The Grand Opera House
The Grand Opera House in York is not only known for its theatrical productions but also for its ghostly residents. The most famous of these is a ghost known as the ‘Grey Lady’, believed to be the spirit of a former actress who died tragically. Sta and visitors alike have reported strange occurrences, such as disembodied voices and unexplained footsteps. The theatre occasionally o ers behind-the-scenes ghost tours, where you can learn about the building’s haunted history and perhaps experience a supernatural encounter of your own.
Thackray Museum of Medicine
Once the Leeds Union Workhouse, the Thackray Museum of Medicine is a place where history and hauntings collide. The building, which dates back to 1861, served as a workhouse and hospital, witnessing countless deaths and much su ering. Ghost sightings, strange noises, and cold spots have all been reported by visitors and sta . The museum embraces its spooky reputation with special events like “After Hours” ghost tours, where you can explore the dark corridors and hear tales of the spirits that may still linger.
Armley Mills
Armley Mills in Leeds, once the world’s largest woollen mill, is now a museum
dedicated to Leeds' industrial heritage. However, it’s also known for its ghostly activity. Visitors have reported sightings of ghostly children, believed to be the spirits of former mill workers, as well as the apparition of a Victorian gentleman. The museum hosts ghost hunts and paranormal evenings, where you can explore the dark, atmospheric mill by night and perhaps encounter one of its restless spirits.
Temple Newsam House

Visitors can explore the house during the day or join one of the special ghost tours o ered during the Halloween season.

Absolutely meets BarbaraHanly, the founder of Soopa, to discover how the pet treat brand was born out of undying a ection
They say that some people come into your life for a reason, but for former dog groomer
Barbara Hanly, it was a tiny 1.7kg Chihuahua X Jack Russell called Lily who was to become the catalyst to transforming a kitchen table idea into a successful business.
Barbara is the founder of Soopa, an awardwinning pet treat brand, celebrating canine health and well-being through a growing range of delicious plant-based recipes inspired by her beloved dog Lily coupled with her experience as a dog groomer.
“While working as a dog groomer, I was shocked at the amount of obesity, skin and health issues I saw in dogs,” she explains. “I started looking into typical ingredients added to dog food and treats. I realised then that I did not want Lily to consume all these nasty additives and fillers and that I could do better, so I set about researching and baking.”
With Lily and her friends as eager chief taste-testers, word soon spread through friends, then friends of friends, and soon Barabra was inundated by pet parents wanting to buy her range of delicious superfood treats for their fur babies. “It was then I began to realise that maybe I was onto something special, and if Lily and her friends, old and
young, big and small, approved, then this could become a successful business.”
In 2013, Barbara o cially launched Soopa, and the company has already won multiple awards. It is regularly featured in the media and currently sells across the UK, Europe, Southeast Asia, and, more recently, the USA. However, Barbara has never strayed far from her original vision despite their commercial success. “I’ve always stayed true to my original quest to create delicious treats which combine human-grade superfoods that taste good and are good for your dog’s health,” she says.
“For example, we include cranberries in a couple of our recipes. Did you know that cranberries are an excellent source
of vitamin C, known for its positive impact on digestive health and boosting immunity? Every recipe we create is designed to benefit your dog’s health and well-being.”
With a growing range of tasty o erings, the Soopa range allows pet parents to shop by age and suitability with a focus on o ering pets with restrictive health conditions, including obesity and low immunity, flavourful treats that all dogs can enjoy without compromise.
“I am always thinking about new recipes and product ideas – it’s absolutely my favourite part of my role,” Barbara smiles. “Initially, I’ll present my ideas to my team and then decide which one to develop further. Once samples are ready, we do the all-important taste test phase with our in-house canine team. After packaging is designed and printed and production is complete, you are looking at six months from start to finish. We have just released our latest range, the 'Cosy Collection', embracing traditional seasonal flavours, including Pumpkin and Cranberry, with an autumnal flavour twist, especially for this winter season.”
As an ethical pet brand, Soopa ensures that all their treats are made to human-grade standard “because we wouldn’t feed our dogs something that we couldn’t eat ourselves” – a statement that was taken quite literally when former ITV’s This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby tasted their papaya dog
chews live on the show and approved! The brand’s range of dental sticks and healthy bites are also now packaged in their 100% paper-recyclable flow-wrap packaging. But their moral standing doesn’t finish there. “We support Dogs Trust Ireland by sharing their weekly dog spotlight on our social media to help find them homes,” Barbara explains. “We have 'Soopa Heroes of the Month', where we ask people to nominate their chosen charity via our website and Instagram posts, and we pick one at random and donate £100 to that charity.”
This love of dogs is intrinsic in Barbara’s approach to business philosophy and their success, but dogs have always played a big personal part in her life. “I’ve always been a huge animal lover,” she smiles. “My first dog was a Yorkshire terrier, Beauty, whom I absolutely adored. Beauty gave me a lot of stability during a di cult childhood when I was bullied at school. My dog Lily came into my life when a friend rescued her as a stray and was trying to find her a new loving home. The first time I met her, she jumped straight into my lap, and in that instant, I knew she was coming home with me! Lily is a huge part of the Soopa story. Lily sadly passed at the end of 2022, and I still miss her every day.”
Barbara was, however, to find another sweet soul to help ease the pain of losing Lily in the form of Hammie. “My heart was broken after losing Lily, so I wasn’t even thinking about another dog when I met a lovely lady in France who rescues dogs from China and re-homes them in Europe. She showed me a photo of Hammie the night he was found, all alone on the side of the road, and a part of me knew I had found a new soulmate. I have a feeling Lily may have even sent Hammie my way! Hammie has definitely helped heal my heart. He loves his new life on the road in the west of Ireland.”

Table TALK
Restaurant Mýse is one of the hottest properties in the Yorkshire dining sceneand things are set to get even bigger
From 1 September, Michelinstarred restaurant Mýse from Joshua and Victoria Overington will welcome more guests to stay overnight at Mýse Cottage, a 19th century property just across the village green of Hovingham, which will house three new bedrooms.
A dinner at Mýse may begin with a summer field biscuit with salted bramble, a charcoal pie filled with raw roe deer and Exmoor smoked caviar, and braised ox cheek in Yorkshire pudding batter with fermented cucumber. Homemade sourdough with cultured Jersey butter, ancient grains and chicken drippings could be followed by English peas cooked over coals with smoked eel and black garlic, and a dish of roasted Thirkleby duck. If that’s not enough to whet the appetite, Absolutely sat down with the husband and wife team to talk about the restaurant’s evolution.
Q It’s been just over a year since you opened Mýse. Has it been a bit of a whirlwind?
JOSHUA: A whirlwind is an understatement! Opening a new restaurant is always a crazy time, but we couldn’t have foreseen the reception we experienced from the moment our doors opened last summer. We’re so grateful to have been awarded a Michelin star within seven months along with lots of other amazing accolades.
VICTORIA: On top of opening the busy restaurant we’ve also added three more rooms to the three we opened with, adding renovations to our to-do list and now we have a baby on the way, as if we didn’t have our work cut out already!
Q When you closed your previous businesses, was that done with the intention of returning with Mýse?
JOSHUA: We closed the previous businesses because we felt our time there had run its
course – we loved Le Cochon Aveugle, but it was a small space, and we felt that after so many years we had outgrown it. We were craving a fresh start and wanted to start a restaurant from scratch, bringing our own vision to life right from the very beginning.
Q Why was Hovingham the perfect spot for you?
VICTORIA: Hovingham is a really beautiful village that feels a lot more rural and very much a destination – we often say the journey to Mýse is an important part of the experience as a whole. Driving through the rolling Howardian hills before arriving at the restaurant really sets the scene for an experience that reflects the landscape our guests have just travelled through to get there. The restaurant is more spacious and less fast-paced than our spot in York, which suits us better.
Q And why the name?
JOSHUA: Mýse is an old Anglo-Saxon word for ‘at the table’, so we thought it was fitting for the space and the history of the area.
Q Were you always going to o er bedrooms?
VICTORIA: Yes, it was always our plan to provide rooms for our guests to stay. We’re aware that Hovingham isn’t in a big city and some of our guests are travelling from far and wide, meaning they don’t have to worry about getting home after dinner. There’s no better feeling than being able to head upstairs to bed straight after dinner (or after a nightcap or
two!) – it feels like an extension of our home and I’m glad we can welcome even more guests now that we’ve opened Mýse Cottage.
Q From day one, what did you want to o er with the food?
JOSHUA: I wanted to o er a more elevated, ambitious o ering than the menus I was cooking in York. I call it ‘elevated grandma cooking’ as I take so much inspiration from my upbringing in Yorkshire, and the incredible produce that surrounds us. Dishes like our braised ox cheek in Yorkshire pudding batter with fermented cucumber or our sourdough bread with Jersey butter, preserved alliums and chicken drippings are nods to those familiar, nostalgic flavours.
“I CALL IT ELEVATED GRANDMA COOKING AS I TAKE SO MUCH INSPIRATION FROM MY UPBRINGING”
Q Do you mainly use Yorkshire suppliers and producers?
JOSHUA: We are really lucky to have some incredible suppliers in the area – we cook with a lot of amazing game when it’s available, and work closely with Castle Howard just down the road to grow our vegetables and orchard fruit especially for us. I love going over there to harvest peas, broad beans and forced Yorkshire rhubarb, ingredients that I know will be on the plate within hours, it’s so satisfying. All of our meat is reared and produced within a few miles of the restaurant, and our fish and shellfish from waters around the British Isles. It’s important for our menus to reflect what’s on our doorstep – our Yorkshire terroir.
Q What dishes/ingredients are you particularly loving right now?
JOSHUA: I’m really proud of our scallop dish, baked in its shell in sea urchin butter. It’s so intense in flavour and the quality of the scallop really speaks for itself. It’s really just about showing o incredible fresh produce. Our scallops are hand-dived o the Isles of Orkney, in the cold but nutrient-rich waters there.
Q Do you have an idea about the kind of food we can expect in the autumn?
JOSHUA: We’ve been working on making more charcuterie in house – we have a Dry Ager where we store amazing cuts of meat and am keen to expand our selection, so by autumn we should have some exciting aged meat on the menu. Local game from the Yorkshire Moors and Dales will be on the menu too.
Q How important is the wine list?
VICTORIA: The wine list is really important. We work closely with Keeling Andrew & Co and choose our favourite bottles from all over the world, with lots on the list coming from France where Josh and I met – Alsatian Rieslings and wines from Savoie and Jura appear on the list. We’re also really proud of our soft pairing, which is something our team have worked really hard on.
Q Were you always looking to expand with Mýse Cottage?
VICTORIA: We hadn’t necessarily planned to open more rooms than three, but given how quickly they book up we were really pleased when the site popped up and jumped at the chance to take it on. It’s just across the road in the village so works really well for our guests – we even have little lanterns on hand to guide them over the village green. We’ve designed them in a similar way as the original three above the restaurant: they are neutral in tone with lots of natural textures, we love the homely, Scandi farmhouse style and think it sets a really relaxing mood.
Q How did it feel to be recognised with a Michelin star so soon after opening?
JOSHUA: I really couldn’t believe it! Michelin is something that has been at the back of my mind since opening as it’s such a prestigious seal of approval, but I thought it would be something to work towards longer term. I had no idea we’d get a star within seven months.

HAVING YOUR BACK
Dan Fagan, founder of SpineArt, on the evolution of spinal surgery and what he can o er across Yorkshire today
Q How has spinal surgery changed over time?
A Spinal surgery is a really interesting specialty in that technology throughout the 1980s and 1990s has really made possible what we can achieve now in the 21st century. If you look at ancient surgical textbooks from the period of the Renaissance, for example, a surprising number of operations in general surgery that we still see and do today have their roots in that time. It was actually quite surprising what surgeons were able to do without modern anaesthesia and antibiotics in terms of appendicectomies, lithotomies to remove bladder stones, and surgeons were even experimenting at that stage with attempting to fix fractures surgically from trauma. They were using experimental plates made of animal bone for example, and unfortunately, these operations because of the lack of anaesthesia and antibiotics didn’t do well. Spinal surgery did not evolve until the 1920s and 1930s. The first open discectomy is credited to a surgeon in around 1934 and again anaesthesia was in its infancy.
Q In what positive ways would you say the approach to spinal surgery has evolved?
A The progression of spinal surgery was slow throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s because of the lack of imaging and diagnostic tools. The invention of the MRI scanner in the mid 1980s transformed the ability of surgeons to diagnose and treat spinal pathology. Much research went on in the 1990s and into the early 2000s looking at the best operations to perform for a variety of spinal conditions. This is really how spinal surgery has evolved more recently in that we now have a much better understanding of the
Natural History, or nature, of the conditions we’re treating and what will happen if we don’t treat it and what will happen if we do.
For example, the focus in the late 1990s and early 2000 was on spinal fusion for back pain. We now know that this does not work for everybody, although in the right patient it can be hugely beneficial. We perform many less spinal fusions nowadays and those that we do perform can be done with minimal access surgery.
This is one area where I feel that the technology and surgical skills have really evolved to minimise the tissue trauma and risks to the patient, with high tech imaging and highly engineered surgical instrumentation and equipment to allow placement of implants inside the body without having to make a large incision. This is massively beneficial both for early post operative pain, early mobilisation and

a quick return to work. In a lot of cases complication rates and side e ects are also less. Today I specialise in percutaneous discectomy which is a minimal access procedure to remove lumbar disc material under image guidance without opening the spinal canal. This is done with a portal, and through the portal a spine wand is placed which vaporises the disc protrusion with a high energy plasma field. I also specialise in the minimal access treatment of osteoporotic spinal fractures, again with the use of portals and image guided placement of vertebral body augmentation. Other highly e ective treatments using other technology such as RF (radiofrequency) ablation to tiny nerve fibres causing back pain, and the widespread use of targeted steroid injections have transformed spinal surgical practice. One key moment in my career was as a young consultant back in 2007, I was the first surgeon to bring many of these techniques to the region.
Q Today, what do you specialise in?
A In my practice we can solve all manner of spinal conditions including neck pain due to Spondylosis or wear and tear, trapped nerves in the neck, lumbar spinal pain and sciatica, osteoporotic fractures or impaction fractures in championship jockeys or sportsmen. All these conditions can be treated in a variety of ways and the important thing is having the expertise to choose the right operation in the right person at the right time.
The typical process from first consultation to operation is hopefully a seamless one with the support of my practice manager Bev, underpinned with our modern electronic record system and easy access to MRI scans and imaging from all over the UK. In the outpatient appointment I will take a history of the condition and examine the patient carefully for typical diagnostic signs such as loss of reflexes, numbness or weakness, which can give us an important steer as to what the underlying problem is and whether or not it can be treated with surgery. We will then perform an MRI scan or other imaging to confirm the diagnosis and the likely next step is a diagnostic and therapeutic injection of steroid and local anaesthetic such as a foraminal epidural. These injections are often very successful at getting rid of the pain and will be arranged at the patients’ convenience, usually within a week or so.
Following that I will see the patient back in clinic for a follow up and if they are better then no further treatment is required. If however, the symptoms have returned we will discuss options for intervention or surgery and they can be booked in for an operation within two to six weeks. Normally before surgery a patient will have a pre assessment visit at the hospital to check that everything is OK with their general health. This entire process is managed and overseen by my practice manager in conjunction with the hospital.

How Andrew Port is leading the way when it comes to alleviating issues with hips and knees
For the past 25 years, Consultant Andrew Port has specialised in hip and knee replacements, utilising his skills to restore mobility and alleviate pain. Andrew became a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in 1999, and has been with Woodlands Hospital since it opened in 2002. He studied medicine at Manchester University, and passed his surgical exams with exceptional results, before embarking on the orthopaedic training scheme. Over the years, Andrew has witnessed significant advancements in surgical techniques. Since working with the Mako robot at Woodlands Hospital, he has achieved remarkable results in hip and knee replacements. The robot’s precise 3D imaging and planning capabilities have significantly improved surgical accuracy and reproducibility, enhancing patient satisfaction.
“Using this new technology vastly increases the accuracy of surgery for hip and knee replacements, resulting in potentially more rapid, easier recovery, and greater satisfaction rates,” he says. “The technology combines 3D planning with accurate intra-operative reconstruction of the hip or knee replacement, and patients report less pain, quicker recovery, and improvement of function.”
While the British Orthopaedic Association, along with the Department of Health directive, ‘Getting It Right First Time’ (GIRFT), advocate that surgeons should be performing at least 15 revision joints and partial knees surgeries per year, Andrew performs more than 50 revisions and 40 partial knee replacements every year.
Woodlands is one of only a few hospitals in the region that o ers access to augmented surgical assistance with the Stryker Mako Robotics system, with which Andrew has carried out hundreds of robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement procedures and is one of the biggest users in the region. He is a regional specialist in complex primary and revision surgery, and set up the region-wide standardisation of care in revision joint replacement. Knowing what can go wrong in joint replacement surgery has allowed him to develop his own surgical technique to minimise such errors. With thousands of successful surgeries under his belt, Andrew has transformed the lives of countless individuals, enabling them to regain their mobility and enjoy a better quality of life. His ambition is to ensure equality of access to orthopaedic surgery for everyone in Teesside, North Yorkshire and across the North East, with outstanding outcomes.

“Our main aim with the design was for the castle to feel homely”
Q What is it like to have your own Castle?
A It’s fantastic! Every time we’re there when guests are staying, we fall in love with it all over again. The castle is perfect for entertaining our friends and family, and is also a beautiful place to relax and unwind.
Q How much have you changed since you took over the property?
Q When was the first time you laid eyes on Castle Trinity and what did you instantly love about it?
A When we pulled up to the property and saw the deer in the deer park, we fell in love with the location. We drove through the deer park and up the driveway leading to the castle. We were both absolutely blown away by the castle, inside and out, and later that day put an offer in.
Q When did the opportunity to own it come about and did you have any doubts?
A We had sold our house in Leeds and were searching for a new property to call home. We viewed many different properties, and after searching for around three months none of them were quite right. I was on my way back from Manchester one day with my father and picked up a Yorkshire Post at the service station, which featured a property guide inside it. On the front page was Castle Trinity. With the castle located between Leeds and Manchester I pulled off the motorway on my way home in an attempt to locate the property. I couldn’t find it at first, but eventually I did. I called Terry to tell him about it and said “you really need to see this place.” The next day we visited the castle together and the rest is history.
A We wanted to keep the character of the building and retained as many of its original features as possible. Despite keeping the traditional features, we wanted to modernise the interior with opulent fabrics and textures. Our main aim with the design was for the castle to feel homely. We installed a lavish kitchen which is the heart of the house, and we have used soft furnishings throughout the property making it a really cosy and comfortable place to be.
Q What is your favourite part of the Castle?
A Our favourite spaces are the lavish kitchen and drawing room with its open fire. Both of these rooms are fantastic for entertaining – something which we both love to do.

HISTORY in the MAKING
Exploring an exclusive upholstered
furniture collection created by Barker and Stonehouse in Leeds and York, in partnership with English Heritage
Launching in September, the exclusive collection of Barker and Stonehouse x English Heritage celebrates Britain’s rich history, taking inspiration from three iconic English Heritage sites. From the quintessential English countryside to the historic homes of influential individuals, this collection focuses on colour and pattern by bringing dramatic floral and fauna based fabric designs into the home. Each range consists of a sofa, chair and footstool and is based on unique hand-painted patterns, which reimagine captivating designs found within three key historical homes: Belsay Hall, Down House and Osborne House.
This iconic collection of upholstered furniture draws inspiration from the past, while focusing on the future, with rich cultural influences that have been modernised to suit all interiors, combining beautiful colourways and detailed patterns for coherent and impactful look.
“Developing a range that not only celebrates England’s rich history but showcases quality English design and manufacturing skills, has been an absolute pleasure,” says Alexandra Bovey, Licensing and Commercial Development Manager at English Heritage.
“With the support of our expert historians and curators, the product design team were meticulous in their research on some of English Heritage’s most unique and interesting properties, to ensure that the range is full of subtle nods to these historic homes,” she adds in a little more detail. “The range is available to buy exclusively from Barker and Stonehouse in Yorkshire, who have a rich history of their own, and a passion for beautifully UK-made products.”
Finch
Finch takes inspiration from Down House, the family home of world-renowned biologist, Charles Darwin. Whilst residing here, Darwin wrote The Origin of Species, a seminal book that cemented the foundations of evolutionary biology. With a unique place in the history of science and evolution, Down House is an English Heritage site of outstanding international significance. Drawing references from Darwin’s great expedition to the Galapagos Islands, as well as botanical print furniture found in his living room, Finch features hand-drawn finches and leaf motifs. Barker and Stonehouse has given this traditional print a contemporary twist by pairing it with soft, curved silhouettes and subtle piping details, creating a modern classic that will never go out of style. Customers can choose between classic and pillow back options for the sofa, and from a range of stylish brushed cotton and distressed chenille plains. Finch is available with elegant turned front legs in antique brass castor or soft wood.
Rosa
Rosa pays tribute to the heritage patterns found in Queen Victoria’s bedroom at Osborne House, the Isle of Wight family home by the sea of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Reigning for 63 years, Queen Victoria oversaw a time of significant political and industrial transformation and as an enormously influential figure, her life continues to receive public attention. Today, Osborne House provides an intimate glimpse into Queen Victoria’s life, with grand rooms lined with furnishings and artworks from the Royal Collection.
The classic English rose, synonymous with Queen Victoria, has been hand-painted and printed onto the linen mix fabric, evoking the sophistication and charm of the Victorian era. Partnered with the furniture’s stately rolled arms and modern turned legs, it creates a harmonious blend of timeless design and contemporary style. The deep Rosa sofa is available in a selection of 20 plain fabrics, including brushed cotton, mixed linen, and distressed chenille, whilst the armchair and footstool can be upholstered in the Rosa pattern and plains.
Quarry
Boasting sweeping views over the gently rolling Northumberland countryside, Belsay Hall Castle and Gardens, and its famous Quarry Garden, are the inspiration behind the Quarry collection. The garden, known as the Secret Garden of Northumberland, was built on the site of a former quarry and was restored by English Heritage in the mid-1990s to return the defining rocky structures to their former glory. Abundant with rhododendrons and unchanged since the 19th century, the public flocks to see this resplendent garden.
The Quarry collection’s hand-painted textile design celebrates the sea of colour of the lush rhododendrons, whilst the organic lattice design of the branches evokes Grecian vines in a nod to the Greek revival architecture of the Hall itself. The timeless sofa and armchair feature a cut-back arm design, outlined by contrasting sateen piping, for a refined and tailored aesthetic.
Printed on a linen mix fabric, with a vintage distressed finish, the Quarry pattern is available in two colourways of vibrant sunset tones or dreamy blues as well as six chenille plains with contrast piping.

SENSES
Yorkshire-based duo Ally and James Dowsing-Reynolds have unveiled their new sensory Magnet kitchen. Absolutely finds out more
Both Ally and James DowsingReynolds, behind the fi xtures and fittings brand Dowsing & Reynolds, are proudly neurodivergent and therefore wanted to create a kitchen that not only worked for their lifestyle, but which also suited their sensory needs.
INDUSTRIAL ELEGANCE
“The design of Ally and James' kitchen was led by the concept of juxtaposition and the idea of balancing opposing aesthetics to create a striking sense of character,” explains Jen. “Throughout the design, function was combined with decoration and durable surfaces matched with soft materials to create an environment rooted in refined elegance but toughened up by a sense of industrial attitude. We opened up the existing large-north facing window and introduced a palette of mossy greens and natural materials to create a warm and inviting yet also aestheticallyarresting family room.”
Striking the balance between creating a characterful design with the right amount of stimulation was key to Jen when bringing the kitchen to life. Starting with a bespoke layout, curated by For the
Working with Magnet’s Head of Design, Jen Nash, the kitchen design embodies industrial elegance – with strong influences from the natural world – to create a visually stunning space that balances stimulation with tranquillity to accommodate everything from cooking and entertaining to family life and work. Alongside the unveiling of their bespoke design, industry experts Ally and Jen also share their advice on how to craft a beautiful kitchen space that caters to those with neurodiverse requirements.
her and James, she blended dramatic industrial features with elegant detailing, tactile stimulation across cabinets and work surfaces, and tranquil biophilic elements from plants to colour schemes to create a space that catered for Ally and James’ neurodivergent requirements, busy family life and expressive artistic flair.
CREATE CHARACTER
Ally explains: “Elements such as patterns can be very overstimulating for those with neurodiverse minds, yet we still require an element of stimulation so it’s all about finding the right balance.”
Jen combined Magnet’s Soho range in Balmoral with its streamlined slab doors with an island peninsular that ran through and under the existing chimney breast to create a streamlined and slick look across the kitchen. Points of interest
“We still require stimulation so we had to find the right balance”
were then dialled up by embracing original features in the space such as the exposed brickwork alongside accessorising the space with Dowsing & Reynolds lamps to layer up the ambience and personality without creating clutter.
NATURAL MATERIALS
For sensory stimulation that doesn’t overload the space, Ally and James recommend mixing materials to ensure a feeling of softness while also creating a point of interest. For their kitchen Jen combined Magnet’s dark oak Nordic Nature cabinetry with the distinctive Dekton in Ceppo work surface in a waterfall effect, dramatically extending all the way to the floor. Not only do both textures dial up the haptics in the room but also react with the natural light, allowing it to play across the space throughout the day.
RETHINK TRADITIONAL STORAGE SET UPS
“People with ADHD often want clean environments, but in turn can easily forget items once stored away, making finding the right storage solutions essential,” explains Ally. Jen therefore replaced traditional deep cupboards for shallow drawers and a butler’s larder, providing storage where everything could be neatly stowed whilst also seen at a glance when opened. “I never thought I’d keep mugs in a drawer, but it’s now something I’d never change,” Ally says.
THE TRADITIONAL TRIANGLE ISN’T ALWAYS TO WAY TO GO
Previously based around the “working triangle”, Jen and James transformed the layout of the kitchen into one focussed around task based needs. James says: “You can sometimes feel you should choose an ‘Instagram kitchen’ that looks beautiful. However, spending months creating and implementing a layout that suits our needs really has changed the way we interact and work in the space, demonstrating the importance of a layout that fits to your requirements.”
The main storage was relocated to the back of the room – allowing the focus to fall on the wraparound worktop, kitchen island and centrally located hob facing the breakfast bar.
EMBRACE ORGANIC ELEMENTS
“Emulating aspects of the natural world can not only help create a functional kitchen environment, but also one that boosts and supports your wellbeing,” explains James. Jen worked with James and Ally to integrate elements of the natural world throughout their design. Magnet’s Balmoral shade, a soft vegetal green, for the cabinets imbued a sense of warmth within space and complemented the darker woodgrain of Magnet’s award-winning Nordic Nature range featured in the island, while a painted brass boiling water tap was chosen for its living finish, meaning it would age beautifully over time. Ally also focussed on layering up the natural elements in the kitchen with Dowsing & Reyonolds’ biophilic faux foliage.
MAKE SENSE OF YOUR SPACE
Ensuring a kitchen is in harmony with the senses is important for neurodiverse people. The Dowsing & Reynolds lamps were chosen for their ‘glowing’ quality, meaning the light gently reflects off Magnet’s Dekton in Ceppo surface, swathing the space in a feeling of softness. All lights were connected to Dowsing & Reynolds
lamp sockets, meaning both ceiling spot lights and lamps could be controlled by the central dimmer switches allowing for total control over the ambience of the kitchen.
INTEGRATE YOUR APPLIANCES
With cooking a real passion for James, Jen positioned the appliances strategically within the room to ensure the space could be used as effortlessly as possible. The Miele multifunction ovens were placed at mid height negating any need to bend down to access, while an induction hob was fitted on the peninsular island ensuring a continuation of uninterrupted surfaces across the kitchen. Making use of the high ceilings, the extractor fan was raised to increase ventilation and provide greater accessibility around the island, while its Roroshetta hood ensured it became an elegant feature.

EDUCATION
JUMP for JOY
The new school term may be under way, but many Yorkshire schools - and students - are still basking in the warm glow of results day for GCSEs and A-levels. Inside, four local schools highlight what a successful couple of days it was, throwing the spotlight on those students who went above and beyond with their results.
World
How Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE) supports aspiring medics, vets, and dentists
QE’s ‘medics provision’ starts in Year 10, and there are plenty of STEM awards, science responsibilities and competitions o ered to younger students. Every year, QE sees a cohort of successful students head o onto exciting medicine, veterinary and dentistry courses, with six September starters this year.
Georgia M, who is going to study Medicine at the University of Oxford after receiving A*A*AA in her A-levels, says: “I received o ers from Cardi , Leicester and Oxford for Medicine and Manchester for Neuroscience with Spanish. One of the main ways that school helped me was with the mock interviews. We had MMI interviews with teachers and this really prepared me and made me feel more comfortable in my real interviews.”
Science and Medics Programme Teacher, Dr Mia Robinson, says: “We tailor our support to individual needs to ensure every student has the best application possible. A large focus of our work with the medics is to understand the careers and the working environment in the NHS, since qualification in the UK comes with an expectation that the individual will work in the NHS for a given time. For dentists and vets, we explore their pathways too. All these courses are extremely oversubscribed, and competition is fierce, so it is important that we work with each student to build the necessary skill set and academic success required for their university place.”
As part of the curriculum, students can choose to study both GCSEs and A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Psychology. In addition, QE o ers an optional ‘super-curricular’ Medicine and Veterinary lesson, which is timetabled into the week for Sixth Form students and
is run by the science department. These sessions include guest speakers from medical, veterinary and dental careers and provide an invaluable opportunity to learn about university applications, university study, and careers from those that have gone through the process and are currently working in these fields. QE College currently ranks second nationally for A-level results according to the Sunday Times Parent Power 2024. Hotham Hall
The East Yorkshire estate opens its doors to events for the first time in its 300-year history
Hotham Hall has opened its doors as Yorkshire’s newest weddings and events venue following a threeyear restoration. The 117-acre estate, based in the East Yorkshire village of Hotham, has been lovingly restored to its former grandeur over the last three years in a heritage-focused regeneration.
The elegant Georgian Estate was built in 1720 by William Burton and became a symbol of luxury and splendour for many years. Three hundred years later in 2020 it was purchased by Hull businesswoman, Linda Kilburn and her husband, David Kilburn CBE founders of MKM Building Supplies, who set about bringing the home and gardens back to life together with Marketing & Events Director, Rachel Waugh.
Following a multi-million-pound restoration, Hotham Hall is now available for exclusive hire. From sophisticated weddings and corporate gatherings to parties, private dining and charity events – their ballroom radiates timeless sophistication, making it ideal for grand events – the estate o ers a variety of elegant spaces amidst meticulously curated grounds and the picturesque Yorkshire countryside.
The venue boasts a beautiful Georgian Hall, vast grounds for marquees and outdoor dining and five luxury suites. The next chapter of the development includes the creation of a luxury spa, private members’ club, additional events space and further accommodation, set for completion in 2025/26. Hotham
Hall’s first wedding will take place in September and the venue is now taking bookings for 2025 and beyond.
Linda Kilburn explains: “The estate is a truly unique pocket of East Yorkshire and a venue like no other. Our journey began with the desire to share its charm and its history and to ensure a longterm future and lasting legacy, so it can be preserved and enjoyed for centuries to come. The restoration has been a true labour of love and we can’t wait to host guests from all over the world to share special celebrations and make memories here at Hotham Hall.”
