arch is officially spring. And while it might not feel like it yet, it's comforting to know that it soon will. Any minute now, we will all start brightening up our palettes with cheerier clothes in lighter shades, wearing fewer layers and generally emerging from the winter fug. So in this issue we're focusing on happy clothes, ranging from the delicate, vintage-inspired prints at London label Beautiful Soul to all things peach, which may sound unlikely as a new favourite shade until you have a look at page 28. Meanwhile, we've fallen in love with chic shoe brand Rogue Matilda and their quirky spin on the classic brogue - we met the brand's founder

ith primetime TV exposure, packed courses and record sales, it seems we are a nation going potty for ceramics. As one of the most ancient industries on the planet, ceramic artistry boasts an impressive history. There’s an inherent magic in the craftsmanship that has always appealed so it’s no wonder that the potter’s star is rising. From the urns of antiquity to the cereal bowls of today, the technology and techniques have undoubtedly changed but the basics remain. Ceramic Art London is the leading showcase for contemporary ceramic art and one of the most dynamic displays of the industry’s finest from across the globe. ast year the fashion week FROW was a veritable paradise of fashionable flats: from slip-on skaters and lace-up Stan Smiths to androgynous brogues and quirky pointed pumps. Flats are officially back, and it's designer Katie Harland leading the way in a new landscape of elevated basics. Rogue Matilda is the chic shoe brand industry insiders are going mad for. Offering a tightly edited line of lace-ups (and for this season, loafers) in a range of colourful hues, fabrics and prints, Rogues have become a lifeline for every busy woman needing some stylish comfort in her wardrobe. We chatted to Katie about her journey, inspirations and that photo of Gigi Hadid… ABSOLUTELY: What motivated you to create a shoe brand devoted exclusively to flats? KATIE HARLAND: The inability to find any flats I liked aside from trainers. I’ve never been a ballet pump girl and I felt that a lot of the brogues and loafers on the market lacked a playful and feminine touch.

ABS: This season the runways were dominated by flats, while countless fashion editors were photographed wearing trainers. Why do you think the fashion industry has decided to embrace flat shoes? KH: Isn’t it obvious? They’re so comfy! I can’t imagine pacing round all those shows in stilettos. That’s not to say heels don’t have their place, but I think the industry has seen a huge uplift in ‘comfort’ brands. People are willing to pay more for everyday essentials because they see value in cost per wear, rather than splashing out on one-off pieces. ABS: What has been your biggest career highlight so far? KH: Definitely when Gigi Hadid was spotted in Rogues at NYFW – she looked amazing. ABS: Do you think flats are feminist? KH: Certainly not, they’re devoid of a higher meaning - they’re just practical. I don’t think that when women slip on a pair of Rogues they’re doing so for the equality of the sexes, they’re doing it because they feel good in them. All women should be feminists at heart, but for me fashion is apart from this. It’s a feeling, more so in London than other cities in the world, and it’s also an expression of yourself.
come from a background in footwear design so I’m always curious about the engineering of a shoe. ABS: How has social media impacted your growth as a brand? KH: It’s definitely a key component of the brand's growth but I’m not hell-bent on putting across a polished and professional façade. It’s always been about people seeing what goes into creating the brand; the things that excite and inspire collections, news updates and exclusive offers. It’s a very personal account and I love the thoughtful feedback I receive from people who follow the brand. It's such a fantastic tool which is available to start-ups these days. To be able to instantly connect and talk to your customers gives a much more intimate relationship between brand and consumer. As the majority of my sales are through the website, it also keeps me grounded in what people like, want and need. ABS: What are your top tips for styling flat shoes? KH: Flash a bit of ankle. Personally I think flat shoes look their best with an ankle grazing trouser, which is lucky as cropped flares, sawn-off denim, culottes and cigarette trousers are everywhere this season. The combination of trouser length and shoe means that it’s still flattering to a woman’s shape, but in a different way to a heel. The French pull off this look very well.
ABS: If you would love one celebrity to wear a pair of Rogues who would it be? KH: Jennifer Lawrence. Not so much for the impact on sales, I just think she’s awesome. She’s a great example of a woman in the public eye who stands for something. She’s not just a clothes horse, she has a voice.

ABS: Where would you like to see the brand in ten years? KH: I’d love to have a store in Westbourne Grove or Marylebone High Street. I think for a brand it’s such a great opportunity to be in a position where you can have a store, as it is the only time you can get the brand personality across in the flesh, rather than online. Obviously, on top of this it would help to have a killer collection of stockists globally. ◆ roguematilda.com

ABS: Where do you draw your inspiration from? KH: Street style is a huge influence, and nowhere in the world is better for this than London. I find that going for a walk around the city is hugely influential. Aside from this, I think you’ve also got to get in to that playful childlike state. Experiment and try things out. I often rip apart previous samples (rip the leather right off the sole!) and stick things on to them - it’s a very physical process for me. I don’t

ABS: What are your favourite pair of Rogues? KH: Without a doubt Pomme Noir. For a London girl, they are the perfect shoes to take you from day to night. The patent leather looks smart for work and is easy to clean if your evening plans escalate, while the pompoms add a fun detail.

With the soundtrack of the sea whispering in the background, we enjoyed an hour of heaven in the hands of our lovely masseur. he vast majority of human beings on the planet share an initial olfactory memory and that is the smell of our mothers! For me it is the smell of my mother's handbag, a hypnotising combination of lipstick and powder conjured perfectly by Frederic Malle's 'Lipstick Rose', a glamorous scent that instantly transports me to my mother's lap at two years old. It captures her style beautifully: classic and elegant but with great energy and joie de vivre. The new generation of mothers that I see everyday in our Perfumery have a highly developed sense of personal style. With tremendous knowledge when it comes to perfume, they are looking for something intimate and exclusive. So for these thoroughly modern mums I thought I would create a more exciting wish-list of exceptional and unusual fragrances. Once upon a time, the very grand perfume house of Caron created the scent of a field

SPRING 2017 sees perfume CELEBRATING WOMANGOOD in all its MANY FACETS of sun-drenched carnations. The carnation has been much maligned of late, however in its natural, concentrated form the scent of this flower is incredibly elegant. The original 'Bellodgia' was created in 1927 and created a sensation in Paris where it was worn by the demi-monde. While this remains a sumptuous example of the perfumer's skill it is a little too 'couture' for every day and so Master Perfumer Richard Fraysse has taken the vision of carnations and roses and injected a fresh aromatic that lifts the beauty of the blooms - 'Piu Bellodgia' is lighter and more wearable but nonetheless beguiling. British Perfumer Michael Boadi's 'Golden Rose', from his tea-inspired collection Bohdidharma, gives a much more hypnotic twist to the queen of flowers. As the rose

petals drift around this heavenly blend they mingle with the intoxicating notes of Indian trumpet flower. Rose is evident throughout this incredible fragrance: light and playful at the top, at the heart velvety soft with spicy germanium, and at the base, the robust rose of a freshly picked flower head. A more simple realisation of this classic bloom is Molinard's 'Rose Turkia' which uses my favourite variant, the earthy sensual blossoms grown in the South West of Turkey, to open the fragrance. The greenness of geranium develops at the heart of the scent which lifts the flower that is then peppered with subtly spices and precious woods. The base is luxurious and licentious with thick honey poured over warm musk. Lighter and more nuanced scents have taken a backseat of late, however spring 2017 sees perfume once again celebrating womanhood in all its many facets. 'Hothouse Flower' from Ineka opens with a fresh green dewy combination of figs and foliage and sliding into a gardenia so bright that she can be worn to the office. A grassy base of corn silk, guaiac wood and musk adds a little warmth. Similarly the wonderful Escentric Molecules have redefined lightness and teamed with ballerina Polina Semionova to create 'Precision and Grace'. William's Pear opens - ethereal and gorgeous and then comes a delicious jasmine/plum note combining technical excellence with beauty. And finally a little fun! For the gourmand what could be lovelier than 'Silk, Lace and Chocolate' from 4160 Tuesdays? This is an indulgent scent made with a very intense cocoa absolute that segues into sensuous strawberry with a touch of zesty bergamot at the top to add bite. Neil Rankin hits the mark with this bustling, barbeque-centric new opening Wo r d s H a n n a h H o p k i n s

aving stood at the forefront of the UK barbeque scene for a number of years, Neil Rankin’s eagerly awaited restaurant temper is already attracting an inthe-know crowd. Definitely not one for vegetarians, the aim of the restaurant is to offer delicious and expertly cooked cuts of meat, tempered for optimal taste, and offset with a range of inventive side dishes. If you love Pitt Cue Co in Soho and Smokehouse in Islington and Chiswick, then you’ll be similarly enamoured with this place.
For a dose of drama with your dinner, plump for a table at the heart of the main dining room facing the energetic open kitchen where, once seated along the green marble counter, you can watch Neil and his team prepare your meal. Don’t worry though, if bar-style dining isn’t your thing there are plenty of booths, too. Eschewing the overdone small plates and tasting style-menus, the offerings at temper are stripped back to the basics - think a selection of tacos (handmade using heritage corn imported from Masienda), cuts of chopped, grilled or smoked meat and a range of sides, dips and sprinkles to accompany them. On our waitress’ recommendation we have the

crab & pickled pork skin and blowtorched mackerel tacos (all exceedingly moreish) and 65 day British White Beef and Middlewhite Pork - perfectly punctuated by spicy Jerk cauliflower, grilled corn with lamb fat butter and MSG ketchup. Lamb, goat and mutton also feature heavily on the menu and come highly recommended. Almost all of the meat is offered in delectably juicy 100g+ cuts, while the range of plates designed around seasonal vegetables allow you to fully customise your dinner. Save room for the cannot-be-missed half-baked, molten cookie and ice cream dessert. Wine at temper takes center stage, with an exciting New and Old World list created to compliment the menu, but it was the selection of Mezcal that we were particularly taken with - we recommend the Nuestra Soledad Ejutla. The basement dining room, with its low slung ceiling, black painted brick flooring and vivid green steel work, has an agricultural industrial feel - but the combination of soft low lighting, barbecue, mezcal and good times makes this the ideal space for a catch up with friends or late-night bites. u

The Waldorf Astoria Shanghai is spread over two buildings, the main tower and the heritage building. In keeping with the high concentration of historical buildings along The Bund, the heritage building adopts a charming elegance and authentic feel. It’s interesting to note that the differences between them represent Shanghai itself; a combination of authentic Chinese tradition and contemporary influence. The Chinese restaurant, Wei Jing Ge, offers a tasting menu of traditional delicacies such as the braised bird nest soup (good for collagen production), and a sea cucumber dish. Chef Jan Van Dyke of the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai presents his in-house dish, the Suckling Pig dumping. If you’re looking to venture out, you’re in an incredible position to do so. The hotel is in a prime location for evening entertainment; The Bund has a stunning selection of rooftop bars to take in those spectacular views. But for something a little different, a short cab ride will take you to the French Concession. Here you’ll find low-rise buildings, quaint restaurants and western nightlife. I’d recommend checking out the bookcase at Ocho Bar Tools to see what’s hidden behind. If you’re lucky

tter’s Holt is a lovingly fitted Mongolian yurt, set in its own secluded field. But don't confuse this with camping, because there's no danger of being cold, wet or uncomfortable here. The beautiful yurt, with its cosy, hand-painted interior, sleeps four in comfortable beds, equipped with a wood burner plus a separate kitchen in an outhouse that also incudes a fully equipped bathroom (with hot water on demand, of course). There are lots of blankets and everything you could possibly need is supplied, thanks to owner Alan and his wife, who have created this beautiful spot as a labour of love. Roughing it this is not. There’s full privacy thanks to the secluded location: essentially, you have an entire field and a bit of forest to yourself, plus your own stream (bring wellies). There's a large dining area, a barbecue and a firepit.

here’s ample entertainment for children on site. Paddle in the stream and go pond-dipping – nets are provided, along with a large glass tank and a magnifying glass for inspecting your haul. With any luck, you’ll spot an otter. Climb to the top of the hill and you’ll find a wooden deck that’s perfectly positioned to watch the sunset. Look closely and you’ll find otters carved into treetrunks and countless other charming details. In the evening, make a fire and toast marshmallows on it.

High-worth network London’s elite preps are fertile hunting grounds for parents wanting to further their own careers Wo r d s J a s m i n e R o b e r t s o n
W
hen Abigail, an ex-City lawyer, found herself as a single mum with two young daughters and in need of a new job, she knew exactly what her game plan was. Get her daughters into Pembridge Hall, one of Notting Hill’s most elite preps (known for its head count of senior bankers), get networking and nab herself a job back in the City. So she did. She’s now back in the Square Mile and her girls are getting a pretty good education, too. Parents, particularly of primaryaged school children, have long made firm friendships at the school gates. But with more and more women working, starting up and running their own business, they are also a great place for meeting and making business contacts. As the Talented Ladies Club website says: “The school gates are a brilliant chance to get to know a fresh group of talented mums and open your professional network even wider.” We’re not talking networking in pinstripes in a monochrome office. This is more likely to be a morning coffee in parkas and Uggs after drop-off. But where mums’ coffee mornings might once have revolved around the kids, the dog and where to find a decent plumber, they are now just as likely to include how to up your SEOs, drive traffic to your site, how a pitch is going for a new client, or results for the inbound marketing push. Among my immediate group of school friends there are senior editors, publishers, TV producers, account managers, lawyers and heads of charities. Just last week I was discussing a how to sell a brand with another mum, a lawyer and branding expert with one of the world’s largest
drinks companies. Women have always been collaborative and involved with each other – but in some cases this has shifted out of the home and into the workplace. And it’s not just women taking advantage. Just as mothers have got more involved in the working world, dads are more involved with their kids and will often be at the school gates and at sports matches and this can lead to all sorts of networking opportunities. “It’s all about the school gate mate,” says Jonny. A partner at a City law firm with four children at prep schools in north London, he says many a valuable client has been snagged through school contacts, because it’s particularly easy for Alpha-male men to socialize at London’s most sought-after preps. “It’s a relaxed and natural way of meeting people. This is because you are already in the club – you are at the school so you have proved you are successful enough to have afforded it in the first place, so the guards come down and you can be genuinely matey.” He points out it’s also “a stage of life thing”– when children are at

primary school, parents tend to fit the 35-45 age bracket – they are doing well but yet to peak careerwise. “It’s a very dynamic phase professionally,” he says. What starts out as men comparing how rich and successful they are “ends up being collaborative and supportive – sort of like NCT meets the boardroom,” he says. When he went through a turbulent work patch, he found the interest and concern of other dads at his children’s schools genuinely helpful. hen I’m not working, I’m always busy. My children are all under three years old so I’m constantly in demand. When a moment of peace arrives I’ve been known to go through my collection of old vinyl, 12” & 7”, sit back with a glass of red and relive my youth in musical notes. I’m also a lover of films, you cannot beat an old classic - they simply don’t make them like they used to. I have always lived in and loved South London. I purchased my first property, a one bed in South Croydon when I was in my twenties. I'm not sure why I did however, as I couldn’t stay away from my family home. The thing is, my parents are both great cooks who have taken me all over the globe with their culinary treats. Speaking of travelling, that’s another passion of mine. From the wonderful Mediterranean regions and islands of the South Pacific to the Caribbean Sea, you cannot beat that holiday feeling of being on a beach with a mojito. I love each of these places with their unique cultures, trends and traditions. Variety is the spice of life!

Dan Gray THE 27-YEAR-OLD £80M HOMES BUILDER
D
an Gray joined a building firm as a trainee at 17 but now constructs some of London’s most prestigious new homes developments. So how did he do it? Absolutely London decided to find out and our first port of call was developer Bellway Homes which, we discovered, employs an extraordinary person called Dan Gray. He’s 27 years old and joined the company ten years ago as a trainee but is now one of its site project managers. While most of his peer group are working their way up the ranks, Dan is now one of the most senior construction workers in London, responsible for sites with budgets running into the tens of millions. We just had to meet him.
on a bigger scale and featuring higher build costs. My first role as a project manager was at New Festival Quarter in Poplar where I started out as a site manager and then got promoted. I ran Phase II of the scheme which was the final block of 175 two and three bedroom apartments and threebedroom penthouse units in a big tower. The whole site was 510 units and took five years to build and cost £75-£80m to build. Then we started a scheme in Nine Elms, Vauxhall, where I also worked as a project manager before moving over to The River Gardens in Greenwich, which is right on the river. What do you do all day? My role is to oversee the organisation of the development and ensure that its construction sticks to the

I’ve been with Bellway for ten years and started out as a trainee, studying firstly at college for a BTEC Diploma and then progressing to a degree in Construction Management at Anglia Ruskin university, working four days a week and studying one day a week. When I first started out it was a trainee role doing all the jobs that the site managers and project managers didn’t want to do like the paperwork, but it taught me how to run an office and get a site up and running. From there I progressed from that role to different housing sites including traditional timber frame houses and flats and then on to more high-end spec properties in London, which are reinforced concrete frames - so taller, much more complex buildings

“My role is to oversee the organisation of the development and ensure that its construction sticks to the timetable and program” program, and that we get what we need when we need it. My other big responsibilities is health and safety on site. We can have 170 people working on site during a busy day so I’ve got to ensure they’re all in the right place at the right time when we need them. I also have to deal with all the sub-contractors’ project managers and brief them on what we are expecting from them, which they will then relay back to their employees on site. How long do these developments take to build? For example here at River Gardens we’re working on Phase I which includes 170 apartments, we started on demolition six months ago, and we’ll probably be finished by 2020 so all in all they take three to four years. What’s changed the most in construction since you started out? The way that builders get involved in local communities; that’s changed. And I think builders concentrate a lot more about their customer these days. What are you most proud of so far? One of my developments, New Festival Quarter, I won a Pride in the Job award from the NHBC for the final phase there for two years in a row. u

Each day up to 700 diners a day would pass through its doors. Langan’s Brasserie continues today even though its founder died in 1988 aged just 42. His former office on Maddox Street, which is a five-minute walk from the restaurant, has been converted into flats by Amazon. o you remember when Damien Hirst and his fellow Young British Artists or YBAs were all over the papers, and the British contemporary art market boomed? Hirst became almost instantly world famous for exhibiting a 14-ft dead tiger shark preserved in formaldehyde. None of this would have been possible without the patronage of former advertising man Charles Saatchi, who opened a gallery in 1985. Its first incarnation, in North London, was a former paint factory and is where the first show, called Freeze, was mounted during 1992 featuring many of the YBAs and included Hirst’s infamous shark.
