WEDDING SPECIAL

All the dreamiest of weddings

N

ovember is upon us with all the uncertainty that we are getting quite used to now. And as anyone who's been involved in the cycle of planning, cancelling or postponing weddings will know, it's hard to keep up. So our special weddings issue comes at a strange time, though it is filled with a new optimism. The weddings industry is displaying exterme resilience, whether in devising miniature boutique weddings for a small number of guests, or in maintaining great flexibility in its approach to bookings. Still, there are a host of beautiful dresses to keep a bride's spirits up and we focus heavily on these in our stylish section. And if weddings are looking uncertain, what about theatre? We were thrilled this month to return to the theatre in the form of a creative piece in a Bethnal Green railway arch, which has adapted to new restrictions so well that it played to an audience of literally 16, all of us thrilled to be back in some way at least. Otherwise, these pages mostly celebrate life at home in London. Enjoy November.

T

he first-ever made Hermès Birkin bag owned by Jane Birkin and Mulberry handbags worn by Kate Moss and Alexa Chung will join almost 300 standout pieces as part of the V&A’s next major fashion exhibition, Bags: Inside Out. The exhibition will be the UK’s most comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the ultimate accessory. From designer handbags to despatch boxes, vanity cases to military rucksacks, it will explore our longstanding fascination with the bag. With an exclusive look inside the world of the factory and atelier, Bags: Inside Out provides an unprecedented look at this global obsession. Actress and singer Jane Birkin and the former executive chairman of Hermès Jean-Louis Dumas met by chance on a flight from Paris to London. Jane complained about how she could not find a bag suitable to carry her belongings and to fit her needs as a young mother. Dumas was inspired to sketch on an aeroplane sickness-bag a supple rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching. The bag was named after Jane and quickly became a sensation by appealing to women who were looking for something spacious and fashionable. The ‘Birkin’ has since become

03

an undeniable symbol of wealth and luxury. The Birkin bag from 1984 that will feature in the exhibition was the first ever made and, unlike the ones that followed, is also equipped with a shoulder strap. Bearing her initials, it was heavily used by Jane Birkin and shows residue of adhesive from the stickers she liked to apply to it. The bag was donated by Jane Birkin for an auction to support the fight against AIDS in 1994 and was acquired in 2000 by Catherine B, Hermès and Chanel bags collector and owner of “Les 3 Marches” boutique in Paris. Lucia Savi, Curator of Bags: Inside Out at the V&A said: “The ‘Birkin’ is one of the most sought-after and celebrated handbags of the 20th and 21th century. We are thrilled that we will display the very first piece made for Jane Birkin which started this long-lasting fascination. This is a truly unique bag which was used and reused by its former owner and shows signs of wear on its surface. These very personal details remind us that

bags are status symbols, but also practical companions to our everyday life.” The Mulberry Bayswater is one of the brand’s most iconic handbags, as popular today as it was when it launched in 2003. Designed by Nicholas Knightly, the Bayswater unites the very best of Mulberry’s craft skills and heritage influences. Supermodel Kate Moss was one of the bag's first celebrity fans and has carried many different styles and colours over the years, including the example features in the exhibition. The Alexa, launched in 2010, was inspired by British style icon Alexa Chung who was often photographed carrying a well-loved Mulberry Elkington satchel. This caught the eye of the Mulberry design team and Chung’s effortlessly chic style influenced the shape and leather choices for this new bag. The Alexa played a key role in the revival of the ‘It Bag’ and quickly became one of the most coveted bags of a generation. Previously announced bags that will also feature in the exhibition include a large embroidered burse used to protect the silver matrix of Elizabeth I’s Great Seal of England, a gas mask bag owned by HRH Queen Mary during the Second World War, Winston Churchill’s red despatch box and the Fendi ‘Baguette’ bag worn by and stolen from Sarah Jessica Parker in one of Sex and the City’s most famous scenes.

ABSOLUTELY reviews…

The MURDER EXPRESS All aboard for an evening of fun, food and a spot of murder By PENDLE HARTE

T

o say that these are tough times for theatres is an understatement. But despite several restriction changes (even after the show opened) Funicular Productions' immersive show The Murder Express is very much on, and the team's dedication is impressive. It's an ambitious undertaking – and as an audience that hasn't been inside a theatre for more than six months, we're very grateful to them. Heavily reduced audience numbers create an even more intimate experience than intended, which works pretty well for a show like this. Pedley Street Station is a converted railway arch in Bethnal Green; we're transported to 1920s London and informed that there's

been a 'slight outbreak of flu' in the area so would we mind if they took our temperature? At the platform bar we linger with Negronis and witness an altercation between glamorous sequin-clad Tilly Tulip and her husband Frank Fletcher, each of whom whispers conspiratorially at us – 'I'm divorcing him' – 'she'll see what's coming to her' – in heavy pastiche. Significant looks and fauxsinister comments set the tone. 'There has never been a murder on the Murdér Express,' everyone says, more than once; the train is destined for Murdér and we're all boarding it. Inside the carriage we sit at booths; screens display passing countryside and we definitely feel that we're moving. Dinner is served – because don't forget

“From now on, ladies and gentlemen, you are all suspects” this is a culinary theatrical event, catered by Masterchef finalist Louisa Ellis – first a truffled amuse bouche, then a beetroot tartar and next a beef dish with braised lettuce and finally pannacotta with raspberries. Cliff Curtis passes through the carriage dropping heavy Cluedo references and pointedly leaving a rope and a candlestick behind. We can't reveal what happens next, though highlights include the lines: 'Give her a nudge and see if she's shuffled off this mortal coil' and later: 'This is now a crime scene and from now on, ladies and gentlemen, you are all suspects.' For all theatre-starved Londoners, this is a fun night out.

VERDICT

he warm, low-lit lobby of The Hoxton hotel in Holborn makes you immediately want to take off your coat and sink into the snug sofas with a cocktail. Venture further in and find Rondo at the back of the ground floor, a homely and intimate space with an open kitchen, exposed brick and a wall of wines. The passionate Chris Gillard heads up the kitchen, and the menu, which focuses on seasonal, daring British cuisine, uses the finest ingredients and flavour combinations with modern flair. Newly refurbished prior to the

pandemic, Rondo is a luxurious yet laidback speakeasy – the sort you’d go for a date night, or, given the latest restrictions, a cosy meal with a household member. Like all good dinners out, we kick off with cocktails. The hibiscus gin-based Pretty in Pink (Holborn’s signature) and the intense and woody Bulletproof (a mix of Bourbon, vermouth and orange bitters), are accompanied by Gruyère cheese straws, pollock tempura with harissaflavoured rouille and a plate of succulent bresaola rollies. Not your average bar snacks. We see the next table order a

couple of Red Bandana cocktails, and can’t resist copying: they combine mezcal, passionfruit, smoked agave and walnut bitters, garnished with two sprigs of sage and smoked chilli salt on the rim. Were it not for the imminent wine pairing, we would order a second. The slow-cooked pork and duck rillettes served with sourdough and tarte cornichons is the most unforgettable dish on the starter menu. A close second is the Cornish crab salad, prepared in a light and creamy sauce with a touch of cayenne. For mains, the Venison haunch is cooked to pinky perfection and we also enjoy braised Swaledale lamb with roasted squash and garlic potatoes. The portion sizes are lovingly generous, in-keeping with the warm hospitality that radiates throughout Rondo. We share the strawberry sherry trifle, the most popular dessert on the menu and a tribute to homely, British cooking. Our decadent dining experience ends right before the 10pm curfew — just as well, or I’d order another Red Bandana. RONDO 199-206 High Holborn, WC1V

GO LOW M A RY

For those who feel they’ve slightly over-indulged in recent months, Mary is just 6% ABV and nine calories per 25ml. The spirit is crafted from herbs and botanicals like basil, thyme, sage, coriander seeds and juniper, providing a fresh, zesty tipple that works well with tonic, like a healthier G&T.

Crossroads

The new Camden cocktail bar with a sustainable edge By ABBIE SCHOFIELD

N

o one wants to spend their evening in a public toilet — unless it serves cocktails. In the last decade, many of London’s old underground bathrooms have been renovated into quirky bars, like Attendant in Fitzrovia, Ladies and Gentlemen in Kentish Town, and now Crossroads. Descend into the cosy den and you’ll be greeted with deep teal walls, rustic wooden tables and a bar littered with herbs (the legal kind) like a mini garden. They’ve done well with social distancing in the compact space too, and there are more bar stools and tables upstairs for fair weather. Bringing a sustainable edge to the Camden bar scene, Crossroads aims to be as low carbon and low waste as possible. “We only take out around two bags of rubbish a week,” says owner Bart Miedeksza. Fruit is sourced from a pick-your-own farm in Enfield and local residents are even involved, growing garden herbs that are used in Crossroads’ signature cocktails, many of which were invented during lockdown. The Oregami, which according to my friend is the “best cocktail he’s ever had”, is a twist on a gin rickey with gooseberry and oregano, while Bay combines rum, vermouth and tonic with bay leaf. The Jack & Jill is made of Calvados with almond and fortified wine creating an intense sour and smoky effect. Each drink is surprising and unique, beautifully presented with hand-carved ice, botanical garnishes and friendly service. Be warned — it won’t stay a hidden gem for long.

Winter slaw

with red cabbage, parsnip and pomegranate SERVES 4

L

ovely additions to this salad could be a few chopped nuts of your choice, a little finely sliced spring onion, or shredded kale leaves. Serve just by itself as a light lunch or supper dish, with fresh goat cheese and wafers on the side perhaps - or it makes a great accompaniment to a Sunday roast - belly of pork, chicken or even game.

INGREDIENTS • ½ small red cabbage, white centre removed • 1 small bulb fennel • 2 sticks celery • 1 medium parsnip, peeled • 2 apples, such as Russet or Cox • 1 lemon, juice • 1 tbsp dried cranberries or sultanas • 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds • 1 small pomegranate • 1 bunch watercress, washed, large stems removed For the dressing: • 1 tsp Dijon mustard • 1 tsp honey • 4 tbsp olive oil • 1 tbsp sour cream

METHOD 1 Slice the cabbage as fine as possible and place in a bowl. Slice the fennel across into rings as thin as possible. Slice the celery slicks finely, on the angle. 2 Peel the parsnip into ribbons with a vegetable peeler. Grate the apples on a wide grater, including the skin. 3 Mix all these ingredients with the cabbage, lemon juice and a little sea salt and freshly ground pepper until well combined. Add the cranberries or sultanas and the pumpkin seeds. 4 Whisk the dressing ingredients together with some salt and pepper until smooth and pour all over the vegetables. Mix well so that the salad ingredients are thoroughly coated. If necessary, you can leave the salad tightly covered in the fridge for up to a few hours. 5 Cut the pomegranate in half around the equator. Holding each half over a bowl, knock the shell with a rolling pin so that the seeds drop out into the bowl. Remove the white membrane, if any, and keep the juices with the seeds on one side, covered. 6 Just before serving, toss the salad again, then tip out onto a flat dish. Garnish with the watercress leaves and scatter the pomegranate seeds and juice over the top.

Fish cakes

W

e have been making fabulous fishcakes in our Production Kitchen for many years and our shops on Kensington Church Street and Westbourne Grove cannot get enough of them. Serve with homemade mayonnaise or tartare sauce, or even ketchup if you must.

INGREDIENTS • 350g large potatoes, washed, peeled and cut into large even-sized chunks • 2 bay leaves • 450g fish fillets, such as cod, haddock, hake or salmon, or a mixture of 2 or 3 • 2tbsp chopped herbs, such as dill, parsley, chives or celery leaf • ½ lemon, grated zest • 2 large eggs • 1 tbsp double cream (optional) • 4 tbsp plain flour • 6-8 tbsp dried breadcrumbs • 4 tbsp vegetable oil • 50g butter

METHOD 1 Cook the potatoes with the bay leaves in a saucepan of boiling salted water. When the potatoes are tender, strain and keep on one side, retaining the water. Using a potato masher, mash the potatoes until fluffy and lump-free, then set aside. 2 Remove any bones from the fish using tweezers, then place the fillets

in a medium-sized pan. Cover with the warm potato water and cook gently over a medium heat for 5-10 minutes or until the fish flakes easily apart with a fork. Drain and leave to cool, discarding the liquid. 3 Place the mashed potato and fish in a bowl and mix together with a fork, breaking up the fish until evenly distributed. Season with sea salt and freshly ground pepper and add the herbs, lemon zest, 1 lightly beaten egg and the cream (if using). 4 Taste the mixture for seasoning, then shape by hand into 4 smooth even-sized patties, approximately 2.5cm thick. These may now be left, covered, in the fridge for up to 3 days. 5 When you are ready to fry the fish cakes, prepare 3 bowls: 4tbsp flour, seasoned generously with salt and pepper; 1 large egg whisked with a splash of cold water; and 6-8tbsp dried breadcrumbs. 6 First roll the fish cakes in the flour, knocking off the excess. Lay them one by one on a clean work surface. Next, using one hand only, dip the fish cakes, one by one into the egg, rolling them carefully around, coating the surfaces and allowing the excess egg to drip back into the bowl. Place the coated fishcakes on a large plate. With clean, dry hands, dip the wet fish cakes into the breadcrumbs, pressing the crumbs gently into the egg. Reshape as necessary, making them smooth and even in thickness. 7 In a heavy-based frying pan, heat the oil and butter until foaming. Fry the fish cakes until golden and crisp on one side, flip over carefully with a fish slice or palette knife and fry on the other side until golden. Cook through for up to 5 minutes on each side and drain on kitchen paper. Keep warm in a low oven and serve, ideally within 30 minutes.

INGREDIENTS

Baked onion soup

with Gruyère toasts SERVES 6

T

his is such a rich and filling dish, especially if a deeply flavoured meat stock has been used, that very little is needed either before or after it. Perhaps a lovely selection of raw vegetable crudités beforehand or a crisp bitter leaf salad with or after would be all that is needed. Either way, a bottle of full-bodied red wine is the perfect accompaniment.

• 6 medium-large onions (approximately 750g) • 90g butter • 6 bay leaves • 1 tsp chopped fresh rosemary or thyme • ¼ bottle good red wine • 1 litre good stock – beef, chicken or vegetable • ½ baguette or sourdough loaf • Olive oil, for drizzling • 250g Gruyère cheese

METHOD 1 Peel the onions, then slice them as finely as possible. 2 Melt the butter in a large heavy-based pan over a medium to high heat, then add the onions little by little, stirring them well so that the slices become coated in the butter as they start to cook. 3 Once the onions are all in, add

the bay leaves and the chopped herbs. Cook, stirring from time to time, so that the onions brown evenly and do not get caught at the bottom of the pan. After 15-20 minutes, the onion juices will start to flow and the volume of onions will have reduced by at least 50 per cent. 4 When the onion slices are all a lovely chestnut brown, add the red wine and season with sea salt and pepper. Stir everything well together, making sure that the soup is evenly coloured throughout and the the texture of the onion is very soft. 5 Add the stock and stir again to mix well, bring to the boil, then simmer for up to 30 minutes or until the flavour and the smell is pleasing. 6 Before serving, heat the oven to 180°C/fan oven 160°C/mark 4 7 Slice the bread into evenly sized pieces (ideally 2 per person) and grate the Gruyère. Lay the bread on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and bake in the oven for 3-4 minutes or until golden on one side. Remove from the oven. 8 Pour the warm onion soup into an ovenproof serving bowl and place the toasts, un-toasted sides up, over the top, slightly overlapping each other. Scatter the toasts with the grated cheese and place the dish in the oven to bake for 10-15 minutes, until the cheese has melted and the toasts are crisp at the edges. to a wire rack to cool. Store in an airtight tin for up to five days. 9 To serve, scoop into warm serving bowls and then ladle the juices in over the top. Each guest should have an equal quantity of sliced onions, juice and toasts. A new book of recipes by Sally Clarke is due to be published in early 2021. sallyclarke.com

FASHION • PARTNERSHIP HAYLEY MENZIES

R E F I N E D R E B E L Absolutely meets designer Hayley Menzies to talk luxury, lockdown and opening a pop-up during a pandemic By ABBIE SCHOFIELD

H “During lockdown, everyone wanted to wear clothes that would cheer them up” AW20 CAMPAIGN 'THE DRIFTERS'

ayley Menzies is brave in more than one way. Not only is her eponymous brand known for going againstthe grain, prioritising good quality designs over fashion fads, but its new Kings Road pop-up has opened during one of the most tumultuous economic periods in modern history. “We want our customers to have a place where they can connect with us and get a real insight into the brand’s spirit,” Hayley says. Hayley Menzies’ maximalist prints, unusual colour combinations and signature jacquard knitwear has earned the label an it-girl following, with fans such as Gwen Stefani, Dolly Alderton and Fearne Cotton wearing its coveted designs. The Leopard Cotton Dusters proved particularly popular during lockdown; online business boomed, which Hayley puts down to the label’s feel-good factor. “During lockdown, everyone wanted clothes that would cheer them up,” she says. “Our pieces are comfortable enough to wear around the house but you can also go out in them, whether it’s to a restaurant or the supermarket.” This online growth made Hayley more determined than ever to open a physical store. “The Kings Road is an

HAYLEY MENZIES POP-UP STORE

iconic shopping destination for independent fashion, so it's perfect for us.” The pop-up itself is both welcoming and visually stunning, a jewel box of a space with a velvet chartreuse ottoman taking centre stage as vibrant racks of clothes line the room like candies on display. Hayley Menzies t-shirts act as works of art, framed above the counter in a rock-and-roll sort of way, while an eclectic display of vintage lamps, re-upholstered in Hayley Menzies fabric, adorn the window. The designer has always prided herself on doing things differently. “I have never succumbed to the pressure for constant newness. The more you put out there, the quality and design integrity becomes diluted,” Hayley explains. Being socially responsible is also hugely important to her. “To create happy clothes, you have to have a happy supply chain, from the person twisting the yarn to the person knitting the jumper. I hope the pandemic will slow things down and show how important it is to look after people and the planet.” H AY L E Y M E N Z I E S

T

he ClearLift laser treatment promises to do it all: lift, tighten, tone, reduce pores & pigmentation and contour the face in just 30 minutes. No wonder it’s hailed as ‘The Effortless Facial’ and a holistic and needle-free alternative to botox. After a short consultation at Dr Medispa, Dr Munjir Somji decides that the best treatment for me would be a combination of the ClearLift and ClearSkin, which tackles acne, my main skin concern. Up first is the ClearSkin, where a laser causes thermal damage to the face’s sebaceous glands to reduce the production of sebum and destroy the bacteria that causes acne. As well as reduce spots, it can tackle oily skin and blackheads. It’s painless, but there is a slightly tingly hot and cold sensation. The therapist concentrates mainly on my chin and jaw, as this is where my acne flares up, and she also uses a special suction tool on any active spots which literally zaps them away. By the next day my blemishes are gone, but four to six sessions of ClearLift are advised for long-lasting results and to get rid of acne scarring. Next, the ClearLift laser (which is also painless) causes tiny microwounds under the skin’s surface to stimulate collagen production and break down pigmentation. Results take a few weeks to show up, but I can’t wait for my next session. DR MEDISPA ClearLift from £180, ClearSkin from £100

HEALTH & BEAUTY • PARTNERSHIP HYDRAFACIAL IS A UNISEX TREAMENT

Glow UP This winter, discover the personalised facial that will fix your lockdown skin By EVE HERBERT

H

aving to stare at yourself on Zoom all day is enough to get anyone scrutinising their skin. From fine lines you hadn’t noticed to dullness and blocked pores, many of us have suffered from ‘lockdown skin’ and ‘mask-ne’ (mask-induced acne) in recent months. As if the stress of a pandemic wasn’t enough, we’re fretting over the state of our complexions too. Although cameras don’t accurately reflect your face (angles, lighting and lenses all distort things), there was a boom in demand for ‘tweakments’ like botox and fillers post-lockdown, with many women citing looking at their face a lot on camera as a key reason. But you don’t have to resort to plastic surgery to improve your skin and get that youthful glow back. Now is the time to perfect a truly results-driven skincare routine. HydraFacial is a treatment that uses unique, patented technology to improve skin health, from cleansing and extracting to hydrating and rejuvenating. Each treatment can be fully personalised to suit your skin type and concerns with hundreds of different options,

“Each HydraFacial can be fully personalised to suit your skin type and concerns”

HYDRAFACIAL IN ACTION

whether you need a solution for calming, brightening, smoothing or firming. Say goodbye to blackheads and bacteria as HydraFacial painlessly draws out all the gunk you didn’t even know existed, before giving your skin a hefty dose of antioxidants and peptides, leaving you with a bare, healthy complexion. For an extra boost, there are enhancements like lymphatic drainage, gentle chemical peels and LED light therapy too. Forget piling on the foundation — regular Hydrafacials professionally clean and nourish your skin to give you that

fresh-faced glow, whatever your age. The treatment involves zero downtime, so no matter how busy you are, you can make your skin’s health a priority. And it's not just the face you can treat either — HydraFacial can be used on the lips, eyes, scalp and body too. Londoners can discover HydraFacial first-hand this winter at a new Marylebone pop-up, open from 5th November to 31st December, where HydraFacial will be offering the chance to try your first treatment at no cost to you. S T R O N G H E R Absolutely meets Tig Hodson, co-founder of women-only gym StrongHer Q Why do we need women’s gyms? A For years the fitness space had told women to eat less, be less and do more, all while being constantly criticised. Lots of women feel intimidated by the weights section in the gym. By having women-only spaces it allows them to face this fear and reach their potential. It also allows for women of some cultures, for example Muslim women, to have a fitness space where they can freely remove clothing that may limit them if they were to train amongst men. Plus it builds a brilliant sisterhood that supports each other. Q Why is diversity an important part of your ethos?

A Every woman, heck every person, can be strong and should be celebrated. We don’t want people to think “I can’t do that because I don’t look like them”. So creating a space that welcomes every single woman, with their own struggles, story, look, life, age and abilities is essential to us. Q In the past, women’s fitness focused on losing weight while men’s fitness focused on gaining muscle. Has this changed? A It has changed, but there is still a huge way to go. More women are getting involved with strength training and building up their confidence while doing so. But more strength-based fitness spaces need to be appealing

for women, not only in terms of environment but cost too. Q Have you faced challenges as a woman in the fitness industry? A I have been made to feel inadequate by others in the industry, but that has shaped me into the woman I am – I don’t scare easily. The biggest challenge was raising money for a womenonly fitness space when the majority of investors are male… but we got there in the end. Q What is your favourite class on offer at StrongHer? A It has to be STRONG. It's great to see women’s enthusiasm for using unconventional equipment. It allows them to take the focus away from what they look like and focus on what they lift like – which is obviously a boss! 19a Cudworth Street, E1 5QU @strongher_women strongher.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY. Meet Sharin Shafer, COO of groundbreaking aesthetics clinic Skinuencer By EVE HERBERT

Q What is Skinfluencer doing

differently to other establishments?

A At Skinfluencer, we not only offer cutting

edge medical aesthetics, but we deliver our medical grade treatments through a luxury client journey service experience in a boutique setting. It is not only about our game changing treatment results, but we promise a luxury service whereby we guide our clients through their treatment journey. I have seen so many clients who have been misdiagnosed, improperly treated or sent home with unclear or no instructions on how to use their post treatment skincare products, which can often make a condition worse! We feel that it is important to work with our clients to achieve their skin goals, and to support them on their journey. We have curated the best technologies available on the market, and assembled a clinical team of world class doctors and aestheticians who understand how to

“Our protocols address even the most challenging skin issues” layer and combine energies and treatment techniques to deliver unrivalled results. This is why we are able to establish protocols which push the boundaries of what is possible to achieve, and can say with confidence that there is not a condition we cannot treat. Our protocols address even the most challenging issues such as pigment from sun damage or scarring, acute acne, inflammatory conditions such as melasma or rosacea, uneven tone or texture, and laxity. We don’t just stop at the face, we can also sculpt your body by permanently eliminating fat and tightening loose skin. Q How would you define your client

and what are they looking to achieve for their skin? A Our clients are savvy consumers who know what they should expect in terms of

results, treatment options and standard of care. They are knowledgeable about what it is possible to achieve with the advance technologies and treatment techniques available today. They do not want downtime and they want natural results. I established Skinfluencer because I suffer from melasma and had been given bad advice, undergone treatments that made my condition worse, and was never happy with my skin. Like me, the Skinfluencer client has often been to several doctors and clinics but has either not achieved their desired results, been advised to undergo an invasive surgical procedure, or has had a bad outcome. Q Talk us through your expert team and

the technologies and techniques you use.

A Our doctors and aestheticians are global

leaders in their fields, all with a minimum of ten years of experience and multiple post graduate or specialised training certifications in advanced techniques. When they join the Skinfluencer team, they must also go through “Skinfluencer-U”, which is an intensive training program to master our protocols. We then pair our world class team with all of the leading technology on the market today. This is why we can commit to delivering unparalleled results. There is not another clinic in the UK with multiple “hero” technologies such as the Cutera Enlighten III, the Fotona Dynamis Pro, the Cutera Secret RF, Cutera XEO Limelight, and Zeltique CoolSculpting, to name but a few.

Q Tell us a little bit about your background

and what lead you to launch Skinfluencer.

A I always wanted makeup-free skin, and

SKINFLUENCER USES LEADING TECHNOLOGY

as a woman in my 50s, I value aesthetic treatments that faithfully help to maintain a natural youthful appearance and which liberate me from wearing heavy makeup to cover my melasma and other imperfections. I was intrigued by the advancements in energy-based skincare technologies and aesthetic techniques. I saw this as an opportunity to standardise treatment protocols that offer unrivalled results, but with a spin. I wanted to offer these treatment protocols in luxury boutique settings and duplicate the concept in key cities around the globe. So, I took my experience as an executive in corporate America and married it with my vision to create a world class global skincare destination brand. Wherever in the world you may be, if you walk into a Skinfluencer clinic, you will walk out with great skin!

SHARIN SHAFER, COO SKINFLUENCER, LONDON

Q We love the bespoke approach

Skinfluencer offers; why do you think that’s important? A No two people have the same skin and no one person has the same issues with his or her skin on any given day – or at every stage – in his or her life. This is where experience and technology meet to create bespoke treatment plans for every skin type, age and condition, addressing everything from fighting off age to complex issues such as rosacea or melasma. Q What do you think the biggest

skincare concerns women face today are, and how can Skinfluencer help? A I think women are more concerned today than ever about skin health. We see women of every age and skin type, and they always ask for healthy skin that glows. The three big issues that women universally want to address are tone, texture and laxity. A woman can have unwanted pigment, large pores, acne scarring, or laxity. We can even it up, smooth it out, and tighten you skin whether you are in your 20s or 70s. Q What is your go to treatment? A I’m addicted to our On Every Level

protocol, which I combine with our Manage my Melasma program. This keeps my melasma (which is stubborn) in check, makes my pores nice and small because it regulates my sebum production, and lifts and tones my 50-plus-year-old skin. It’s my fountain of youth!

Clare Navas, founder of The Leaf Elite, on how cannabinoids can empower your health B y C L A R E N AVA S

CLARE NAVAS

OUR ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM (EC S) Little was known about the endocannabinoid system until recently, but now this system has been discovered it has been acknowledged that it is crucial to help the body remain healthy. This system is an integral part of us as it controls our bodies' main functions including the central nervous system, hormone regulation and immune health to keep us in balance. The phytocannabinoids that are the compounds of the cannabis plant respond with the receptors CB1 and CB2 that are situated throughout our body. They infiltrate our system in order to mimic to some degree our natural endocannabniods anadamide and 2AEG. There is evidence to suggest that using CBD daily can truly benefit the body – that’s why I am such a huge believer in the cannabis plant.

SUPPLEMENTING OUR EC S WITH THE RIGHT FOODS Many people don’t know that our bodies are making cannabinoids all the time. Our cells produce and use cannabinoids to respond to stress, illness and injury in order to remain healthy and balanced. But it's not all about cannabis; other foods and activities can help the endocannabioid system. Here are some examples.

MASSAGE THERAPIES XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

As the skin has a huge number of receptors that are responsive to cannabinoids, massage is the perfect therapy to top up your endocannbinoid system.

REACH OUT TO OUR TLE ARMY OF ANGELS ORGANIC FOOD IS KEY The first thing to look at is what are we eating. Supplementing with CBD is great but you have to eat well too. Toni from Feed Me Momma will help you top up your cannabinoids with some amazing vegan combinations with nutritious vegan treats, with some CBD added too. You can book the amazing Supper Club for something fun and new to try which enlightens both your body and mind.

ENHANCING SPORTS We love yoga and exercise to help boost the ECS system. We have virtual and group classes with Tara in London.

The Leaf Elite have virtual consultations online as well as a professional team situated at exclusive locations across the UK. We are also partnered with Greenway DNA, so don’t forget to check out your unique CBD dosage guide which is available on request. Everything that is around us has an effect on our system, especially what we consume. Make sure you look after yourself and do what makes you feel happy. Celebrating 25 brilliant years dressing brides – and now with a store in London, Rosa Clará remains a go-to for the ultimate dress. We speak to Rosa Clará Pallarès to find out what makes the brand unique Interview LIBBY NORMAN

Q You are celebrating 25 years at the forefront of bridal fashion When you look back, what have been the biggest changes and what things remain the same? A There have been many changes. The online world has made fashion available to many people and this was unthinkable a few years ago. Now brides have a culture in fashion that did not exist before. However, the main change is in the age. When we started, the typical bride was 23 or 24 years old at most. They were girls who came to try on dresses accompanied by their family, which greatly influenced them. Today, brides get married from the age of 30 – they know exactly what they want and make decisions for themselves.

80

Q While seasonal trends may shift, I've often heard it said that you can always spot a Rosa Clará gown. How would you describe the 'signature' of your brand? A A wedding dress has to stand the test of time, it must have a classic point, even if it innovates in neckline or details. Our collections have an impeccable pattern; we use the best fabrics and innovation is constant. Design, craftsmanship and quality are the DNA of the brand. Q Rosa Clará has distinct collections to match different styles of bride – could you outline the key design elements of the four collections? A Modern architecture inspires the Rosa

Clará Couture collection, with designs that keep to its 'less is more' concept. Simple lines, and exceptional fabrics, such as silk satin, crepe, georgette, Italian cloque and flocked plumetti tulle, define a sophisticated and romantic collection. The Rosa Clará line combines minimalism and sensuality in contemporary dresses that enhance the silhouette and faithfully represent the essence of the brand. Ethereal and delicate, Rosa Clará Soft also does not forget sensuality through muslin silk dresses with slits in the skirt. For a wedding in nature, Rosa Clará Bohème offers designs with artisanal details and Provencal lace bodies that represent a luxurious and delicate boho style – it's a Rosa Clará style of boho.

Q You also have Rosa Clarรก Cocktail, which is popular with mothers of the bride and guests. What is the inspiration behind these dresses and separates? A One of the main goals is to make women more beautiful and suit their needs. As with our bridal collections, in our cocktail line we have a wide variety of styles, silhouettes and cuts aimed at women of all ages. Our constant is to always use the best fabrics, and we are continually researching and looking for new options and trends every season.

Q You are now a major presence in 80 countries. How have the many different brides and global bridal traditions you work with influenced the design of your collections? A They influence us a lot. Being present in so many countries and being able to listen to so many brides with different styles and cultures has allowed us to create collections designed and created around each one of them. In Rosa Clará you will not find a similar design, and this is thanks to them Brides are our main source of inspiration. Q Your HQ remains Barcelona, a city that is widely considered the 'world capital of bridal'. What does being in bridal's heart mean in terms of bridal talent, access to world markets and inspiration? A In our case, constant innovation and being able to reinvent and adapt ourselves in every situation

has played a very important role in our brand. We also have a product whose bases are craftsmanship, quality, and design. 'Made in Spain' provides a seal of quality. In Barcelona, there is a long tradition in textiles and this quality is recognised internationally. Q You now have a wonderful Rosa Clará store here in Mayfair where brides can see all your collections, alongside exclusive bridal accessories. Could you describe how the experience works for brides visiting one of your boutiques to choose a dress? A The experience is the same in all our stores. It is a unique experience since it is about finding the most important dress of your life. I always tell brides to listen to our professional advisors. Q Finally, having reached an amazing 25-year milestone, can you share any of Rosa Clará's plans for the upcoming seasons? A The bridal fashion industry is a constant challenge. To keep Rosa Clará the innovative brand it is, we

must constantly contribute new ideas that position us first. On top of this, we also need to grow the brand in markets where we are already recognised. Above all, the incorporation of my son Daniel into the business project is something that makes me especially excited. He is well prepared, so that makes me think that he can do it much better than me.

Circle of LIFE

Lark and Berry’s bespoke engagement rings are not only stylish but they’re sustainable too By EVE HERBERT

F

ollowing the brand’s first bridal launch during New York Bridal Week in late 2019, sustainable luxury jewellery brand Lark & Berry has launched a second collection of direct-toconsumer engagement ring options to meet increasing customer demand. Lark & Berry is the first brand in the world to offer diamonds for engagement rings made in the UK with 100% renewable energy. Lark & Berry offers a selection of designs but also works with every customer for a customisable experience, in which the brand’s rings can be chosen with various metals such as 18K gold and platinum, and choose from stone sizes ranging from 0.5ct up to 5 carats. Prices start at £1,950 for a 0.5ct ring and £3,850 for a 1ct ring. Customers can choose from a wide range of different cuts ranging from the classic round to princess, emerald and

cushion cuts among others. Lark & Berry will continue to offer bespoke engagement ring services for customers who don’t wish to choose from the launching range’s pre-made designs. "Since our launch in 2018, our brand followers have been asking us for engagement rings,” states Lark & Berry founder Laura Chavez. “At Lark & Berry, we very much champion cultured diamonds jewellery as the “now” option that allows independent women and men to gift themselves—but of course, when wedding bells begin to chime in our fans’ lives, we want to be there for them, as they have demanded, to give them the exact cultured diamonds rings they desire to complement their everlasting love for their partners.” For these new cultured diamond engagement rings, customers can choose diamonds made in a UK lab that grows them with 100% renewable energy. Diamond labs are always moving to become the most sustainable they can be, and it is only a matter of time before all labs use most if not all of their energy from renewable sources. This debunks the argument that a lab-grown diamond produces more carbon emissions than mining for one does. A cultured diamond will always be the most sustainable, ethical and eco-friendly option. L A R K & B E R RY Lark & Berry’s engagement ring collection is available online and in the Marylebone flagship store. larkandberry.com

Classically ELEGANT

Even with only 15 people, a Coworth Park wedding can be a showstopping event By EVE HERBERT

OAK ROOM WEDDING

SUMMER AT COWORTH PARK

E

veryone knows that wedding preparations are taking shape differently this year. Venues are receiving an influx of enquiries about ‘intimate’ weddings, for a maximum of 15 guests, and for such small parties it’s possible to ramp up the experience and create an even more special event. At Coworth Park, the classically elegant Oak Room is the perfect space for an intimate autumn/winter wedding, while the Tower House has an open fireplace, another cosy event space for a 15 person wedding. There are many separate outdoor spaces available, making Coworth Park a perfect spot for a summer wedding next year, with ceremonies in the meadow and aisles of wild flowers. This summer, the venue had a stretch tent marquee installed in the Lime Grove which offered outdoor catering in an alternative way instead of the usual three course sit down meal. So why not consider afternoon tea or a barbecue in the grounds to create a really relaxing day for your guests? These options will all be available next summer. Alternatively, couples can design their own menus working alongside michelin-starred executive chef Adam Smith. There is a branded Horsebox bar which can be set up in the Lime Grove too – a nod to the hotel’s equestrian heritage – where guests can enjoy their favourite cocktails al fresco, prepared in the quaint horsebox bar, which also offers the perfect photo opportunity.

With so many restrictions in place, Coworth Park is being as flexible as possible to each and every couple so that all weddings are curated from bespoke proposals and packages to suit their exact needs. dorchestercollection.com A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

atherine and Rob knew they wanted a classic celebration, as Katherine describes it: "a traditional English garden wedding". But they also live in London, where perfect garden settings are in short supply. The capital won. "First of all, we both love London – we’re still waiting for its novelty to wear off. Secondly, we wanted our wedding to be easy and stress-free for our guests to attend." Sourcing a central garden location meant they had to find a very special spot – and what could be finer for an early June wedding than Chelsea Physic Garden. This historic botanic garden boasts a positively tropical profusion of rare trees, flowers and herbs, thanks to its mellow stone walls and

sheltered location close to the Thames. This proved to be perfect for their garden vision. "We also had a slight military edge to the day as Rob was a serving cavalry officer at the time," adds Katherine. With such a glorious backdrop chosen, the couple went for a simple and very summery theme of sky blue, with pink and white accents – reflecting the flowers in bloom in early summer. The couple opted to get married in Christ Church Chelsea, an early Victorian church located close to Royal Hospital and also within strolling distance of the Physic Garden. With venue and church in place, planning in earnest could begin, and having everything London local made planning meetings much easier. The June weather did them proud and London put on its best show, adding to A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

“I walked through the Guard of Honour, under the flower arch and down the aisle to meet a smiling Rob” what Katherine describes as the summer vibe. "We massively lucked out with the weather – blue skies and hot, hot, hot!" Katherine had chosen a gorgeous sleeveless silk gown by Peter Langner, found at Browns Bride in Marylebone. She says the team were exceptional. "I cannot recommend them highly enough – the experience from initial to final fittings was perfect and at no point stressful." She

92

worked with make up artist Frey-ja Barker, who has a studio at Fenwick, and found going for a trial to get her look fun. "She also brought quite a lot of cool, calm and collected to the day itself!" adds Katherine. Rob wore a bespoke morning suit and waistcoat sourced from Buckleigh of London, also star suppliers. "Lots of our wedding party also used Buckleigh and it was thumbs up all round." The formal

attire of groom worked wonderfully with the military uniforms of Rob's colleagues who were there to make their service even more special. This church service became a high point of the day. "It was the favourite part for both of us, from beginning to end," says Katherine. "Having dreaded the inevitable attention, I actually loved arriving at the church with my family, bridesmaids and bridesman in white London taxis to be met by our bagpiper, who looked so smart in head-to-toe tartan." "We walked through the Guard of Honour – an arch formed by Rob’s soldiers with their swords – under the flower arch and down the aisle to meet a smiling Rob. Rob and I then lit candles for absent family, which, together with the amazing Christ Church choir, set the tone for a special service." After the service, everyone made their way to Chelsea Physic Garden where a Raj Tents marquee had been set up for the reception. This definitely brought extra magic to an already beautiful venue. "They also supplied lighting and lovely wicker furniture with matching parasols for outside the marquee. The

aesthetic was spot on," says Katherine. The drinks reception was another favourite part of the day. "I’ll never forget the scene: a kaleidoscope of colourful summer dresses, glasses brimming with champagne, rosé and Aperol spritz, all against the backdrop of the tropical Chelsea Physic Garden on a hot summer's day – it was spectacular!" Their florist Joan Holdsworth (who has worked with Christ Church Chelsea for many years) had come up trumps with arrangements – both the showstopping floral arch in the church and the simple and country-style table flowers were beautiful and perfectly in tune with both the setting and the season. While the party was glorious, Katherine and Rob would, on reflection, have chosen a dedicated co-ordinator just to take away those inevitable pre-party stresses. Their other tip for couples is to make an event of all the wonderful small and large preparations that happen in the run up to the big day. "We had such fun at the various tastings with family, the dress and suit fittings with friends, also listening and choosing music together and picking out wedding bands." All these extra elements have become part of the memories of a perfect June wedding celebration.

TREASURES

Whether it's an enchanted weekend or an idyllic rural wedding you're after, you'll find magical settings in the countryside. We explore two perfect places for a UK getaway

W

WILDERNES S RESERVE

ilderness Reserve is at the top of everyone’s list for a UK staycation thanks to its gorgeous individual properties – twenty and counting. Located in Sibton, Suffolk, it's the place for exclusive hire, nailing the laid-back luxury approach for every size of party, writes Isabella Eckett. Over two decades, the 5,000-acre estate has been regenerated, with nature at the heart of every development. Cows and sheep graze the land freely and vast wildflower meadows add to the tranquility. But what really sets Wilderness Reserve apart is the incredibly chic interiors of the restored farmhouses and cottages in its grounds. The Grange has its own spa facilities, outdoor pool and hot tub, cosy girly bedrooms with rolltop baths and a large rustic kitchen for cooking or dancing around. The Walled Garden is Insta-famous for its floor-to-ceiling glass windows, while the Suffolk-pink Farmhouse makes a fabulously cosy

96

and chic backdrop for your luxury weekend away. Sibton Park manor house or the brand new Chapel Barn are perfect for accommodating larger celebrations. For weddings, the estate is available for exclusive hire – and there are only a handful each year, making this rather special. There are also a romantic boltholes for two nestled in the grounds. Candle-lit (electricityfree) Hex Cottage is a honeymooners' favourite. This is proper countryside, so with an abundance of activities on offer. Go paddle-boarding on the serpentine lake, explore by Pashley bicycle or shoot a few clays. The estate has its own ranger to show you around – hot tip: bird-watching has become the in thing among guests. Foodies are in heaven here. The Bonfire Experience, where you dine alfresco in the woods, is unmissable. If you want grand, hire one of the estate’s private chefs for a seasonal five-star feast. “My inspiration is always from houses grander than mine... I love objects but I hate clutter. It’s a constant fight with myself” kitchen table in Los Angeles. She named the brand Meri Meri after a childhood nickname, and would go door-to-door with her designs. People would often tell her that no one would buy them. Luckily for Stuart-Smith, Bergdorf Goodman didn’t agree. The business really began to take off after she picked up the luxury department store as her first big client at a tradeshow in 1987. Today, her designs are stocked in stores all across the globe. The brand is based in Cheltenham, where Stuart-Smith lives with her husband. The couple met at a stationery show in New York and moved across the pond over 20 years ago. They live in a four-bedroom property set in a stucco-fronted 1840 rectory, which was divided into three apartments in the 1950s. Meri Meri designs pop up here and there – a velvet cushion in the shape of a swan, a gold paper garland decked from the ceiling – but overall the house has a clean, elegant and distinctly grown-up feel. Here, Stuart-Smith talks about her eclectic interiors style and what she loves most about her home...

M

eredithe Stuart-Smith believes in the magic of childhood. The founder of Meri Meri, she is the creator of a whimsical world where party meets play. It’s one filled with glitter crowns, fairy wings, cascading pastel paper chandeliers and giant foil balloons in the shape of mermaids. It seems fitting, then, that Meri Meri was inspired by a childhood dream. StuartSmith grew up down the street from the Hallmark card company in Kansas. She would make cards and tape them up to the window, secretly hoping that someone from Hallmark would walk by and ‘discover’ her. Fast forward to 1985 and in the hope of bringing her childhood dream to life, she began making handmade cards from her A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

Q How did you come to buy your house and what drew you to it? A It took us about two years to find our house. We put lovely handwritten notes through letterboxes asking if the residents might be interested in selling their house. We were determined to have a Regency-style property. While Cheltenham is a Regency town filled with beautiful period properties, so many of them have been converted into flats. We moved to Cheltenham for our daughter to attend Cheltenham Ladies’ College as a day girl. It was also important for our home to be located near the college so that she could walk to school. Q What was it like when you bought it and did you do any renovation work? A The house had not been touched in 50 years. We had to rewire, replumb, add bathrooms, a kitchen etc. We also had to live in the house while it was being renovated. We moved our things from room to room. Q What was your decorating vision and where did you look to for inspiration? A My inspiration is always from houses grander than mine. I have always been a collector of antiques, vintage finds and art. My style is truly eclectic. I love objects but hate clutter. It’s a contradiction and a constant fight within myself. Q What’s your favourite room in the house? A By far the kitchen and the shelves on the back wall. They were custom made in Italy and are in themselves a stunning feature. They’re also a striking place to display art and crockery.

Q How have you incorporated Meri Meri designs into the house and do you have any favourite pieces? A I love our velvet cushions and have a few dotted around the house. Sometimes I will hang one of our paper chandeliers from our sitting room chandelier. Q Being an interior designer, is there a temptation to change things all the time? A There is, however it really takes a lot of creative focus and head space to do it well. Meri Meri is such a creatively driven company and we produce several collections a year, it takes much of my energy! Q And finally, was home your sanctuary during lockdown? Or were you climbing up the walls? A Home was a haven, however I desperately missed the buzz of our studio and the incredible team I work with everyday. merimeri.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY. LESSONS

from LOCKDOWN Remote learning is a challenge for everyone, but staff, parents and pupils have risen to the task of doing the unthinkable. Three schools describe the lessons they have learned from lockdown

R

ecent months have been an extraordinary chapter for education and the classes whose public examinations never n ever happened will certainly never forget this year. There has been – justifiably – much concern over the potential harm to young people of all ages and stages denied 'normal' school life, with all that this entails. But behind the negative stories, a quiet sense that something rather revolutionary happened in Summer Term 2020 is beginning to emerge. Schools around the country managed the unthinkable – shutting their gates but finding ways to ensure both academic continuity and their spirit of community carried on. Plans were brought forward, remote learning ideals became practical necessities and staff and school leaders dug deep to prove the old adage about the 'mother of invention' in delivering pastoral, extra-curricular, sporting and creative provision. Six schools give us their early impressions of the lessons learned from lockdown.

James Allen’s Girls’ School

JAMES ALLEN’S GIRLS WERE INVENTIVE

“Pupils are very resourceful”

A

t James Allen’s Girls’ School in Dulwich, remote teaching and learning swung rapidly into gear to support some 1,000 pupils aged 4 to 18. While there were inevitable teething problems, inventiveness saved the day. “If anything, this made the outcomes even richer as colleagues and students found creative solutions for common issues,” says JAGS Deputy Head Pastoral Samantha Payne. She describes a period of remarkable agility, especially in the use of technology, and with real enthusiasm from everyone to keep the learning varied and enjoyable. “An added advantage to working online is the ease with which pupils and teachers can share their resources, and the outstanding sense of collegiality that comes as a result of this.” The way in which pupils and teachers have been able to communicate more broadly is certainly something that the school wishes to retain. Another positive is the way in which pupils of all ages stepped up to this challenge. “It has

“We found that pupils were engaging in dialogue about their learning in a more organic and flexible way”

been evident that our pupils are very resourceful and motivated and, for some, working beyond a traditional classroom but within the context of an interactive online lesson, has enabled them to have more confidence in their own ideas,” says Samantha Payne. In any classroom, young people are influenced by their peers and the work that they see others producing, whereas working online has enabled more creativity and individual approaches. “We have also noticed that those pupils who may be quieter in lessons ordinarily have blossomed in an online environment” Wellbeing surveys and daily contact with form tutors enabled robust formal pastoral support, but clubs and regular assemblies have also played a pivotal role. Girls responded enthusiastically to extracurricular opportunities – virtual quizzes, sports and baking challenges and music, drama and art events. The JAGS’ Parent Talk programme also flourished. Larger numbers of parents engaged and some noted that it was far easier to join a Zoom event, so the school hopes to continue live-streaming to benefit parents who struggle to attend in person. Counsellors, nurses and chaplain made themselves available to staff and parents, as well as pupils, and this has informed future plans. “Online pastoral support will certainly feed into JAGS’ wellbeing strategy as we face the coming months – and we will adapt and tweak – and embrace good ideas, as ever,” says Samantha Payne.

Queen’s Gate School “Digital literacy has been enhanced significantly”

I

n common with other schools, Queen’s Gate rose to the challenge of moving its entire operations online almost overnight. “The management of this change was not in accordance with text-book advice, with limited time for planning and no time at all for pilot schemes – but it had to work and it did,” says Queen’s Gate Principal Rosalynd Kamaryc. The school selected Zoom as its platform, and with a few quick lessons on the basics staff were ready to go. “We always encourage our pupils to take risks in their learning, to enjoy ‘having a go’ at something new and to learn from failure and what a wonderful opportunity we had as staff to lead by example as we learned how to set up meetings, send out invitations, share our screen, annotate and use break-out rooms. It was a steep learning curve, but one which staff embraced,” she adds. Half the lessons were designed to be ‘live’ but it soon became apparent that many more were taking place. “Creativity and ingenuity were evident in our teachers’ approach to this

‘brave new world’ of remote learning as they discovered new applications and happily shared good practice with their colleagues.” The school timetable of activities continued, with virtual concerts, sports days – also an online charity auction, quizzes, lectures and coffee mornings for parents. Assemblies, house events and prize giving took place, alongside end-of-year assessments. “Pupils and staff rose superbly to the challenge. Certainly, digital literacy was enhanced significantly and I think also the girls’ greater understanding of the appropriate use of technology,” says Rosalynd Kamaryc. GCSE and A-level pupils were particularly affected, so staff created Extend Programmes of taster lessons for the next stage of education, as well as lectures and enrichment opportunities – parents seemed to enjoy joining the lectures too. From the beginning, it was clear that social contact should be offered at every opportunity, so the External Relations team set up an online weekly newsletter. Before the end of term, there was a discussion about what might continue after Lockdown and staff were enthusiastic about continuing Zoom for some meetings, lectures from visiting speakers and collaboration with other schools. “Lockdown was a unique opportunity, but we now look forward to using the best of our experience to enhance the educational opportunities we offer our pupils,” says Rosalynd Kamaryc.

“Parents liked the option of online parent-teacher meetings and the increased visibility of lessons and teaching”

F

or all schools Lockdown was a test, but for ArtsEd Day School and Sixth Form in Chiswick there was an extra challenge – the logistics of delivering its nationally recognised programme of creative teaching. Its pupils are used to singing, dancing and acting together, so how to create that ensemble spark remotely? Well-laid plans, a switched-on IT team and a hefty dose of positivity ensured that the show did go on during the summer term. “In spite of not being in the same building, let alone the same room, students and staff made full and inventive use of remote platforms, with dance classes, singing lessons and drama sessions continuing right alongside

Maths, History, English and the rest of the full academic curriculum,” says Headteacher Adrian Blake. Here was unfamiliar territory, but the spirit of adventure and sense of assurance that are required for a career in the performing arts were much in evidence in what Adrian Blake describes as a “typically ArtsEd” way. Parents were incredibly positive about the school’s response, with one noting that they couldn’t begin to understand the complexities of moving the whole performance side of school life online. “The smoothness of our transition to a virtual timetable was the result of our excellent teaching staff, our hard-working IT Team, and our dedicated pupils all working together. Regular one-to-one catch-up sessions also ensured the continuation of our pastoral care, and the educational and vocational guidance that is so valuable in enabling pupil achievement.” With Year 13 pupils heading off to leading drama schools, universities and direct into acting work, the graduating class of 2020 have certainly had a crash course in managing performance under pressure – surely experience to stand them, and their fellow pupils, in good stead in their professional futures. Black HISTORY St Dunstan’s College celebrates Black History Month By EVE HERBERT

“Students were keen for activities to focus on their lived experiences rather than historical figures and events”

T

his October, St Dunstan’s College celebrated Black History Month with a variety of events taking place across the school. Last year, Senior School students reflected that they want to take more of a leading role in shaping the plans for the week. They were keen for the activities to be more focused on their lived experiences rather than historical figures and events. The Afro-Caribbean Society and some of their Year 13 colleagues had the opportunity to put together the plan for the week. The main entrance was decorated as a celebration of black culture, with students being able to enjoy the displays and exhibits on show. The College’s large video wall in the foyer was also used to celebrate, with inspirational quotes from individuals such as First Lady Michelle Obama. Kicking off the celebrations, Old Dunstonian Andrew Osayemi hosted a virtual assembly for students. Andrew left a very successful career in investment banking to set up a TV production company. He produced the comedy show Meet the Adebanjos, which was loosely based on his life as a British child growing up in London with African parents. During his virtual assembly, Andrew encouraged students to be a part of the change that they want to see and make a contribution. Andrew was also able to visit the College in person and deliver his assembly to small groups. He

THE COLLEGE'S VIDEO WALL

shared his life experiences and challenged them not to give up on their hopes and dreams when confronted with the word 'no'. Speaking about the assembly, St Dunstan’s Assistant Head Co-curricular, Danny Gower said: "We were delighted to welcome Old Dunstonian Andrew to the College. It was an inspirational talk and I’m sure the students will remember the phrase, 'don’t dwell on no, focus on earning your yes' long after they leave the College." Meanwhile in the Junior School, during lessons the younger pupils learned about the bravery of 6-yearold Ruby Bridges, the first AfricanAmerican child to integrate the southern states of America in 1960. Reception pupils marked the occasion with a colourful carnival in the playground. They made African necklaces using paper plates and learnt all about the spirit of carnival. They tried on some real carnival headdresses that were worn at the Notting Hill Carnival and had the opportunity to make their own. The week ended with a mini carnival procession around the playground wearing the hats and African necklaces. Well done to everyone who took part in Black History Month, especially the Afro-Caribbean Society who did such a wonderful job in preparing for the events.

T

hough a holiday north of the Arctic Circle offers an array of incredible experiences, chances are that one of your main reasons for visiting is to tick the Northern Lights off your bucket list. The Aurora Zone offers many ways to search for the Northern Lights, from night-time snowmobile safaris and husky sledding to reindeer sleigh rides and cross-country skiing. However, one of their favourite trends is the innovation of Aurora accommodation, which allow you to gaze up at the inky night sky and watch the Northern Lights shimmering dance from the comfort of your bed or sofa. From experiencing one unforgettable night in this specialist accommodation to spending each night of your holiday searching the skies as you are tucked up in bed, The Aurora Zone has an array of memorable, creative and luxurious rooms with the ultimate view.

ocated in the north east of Finnish Lapland, Saariselkä Northern Lights Village was custom built to offer guests the opportunity to see the Aurora from the comfort of their bed. Here there are 80 Aurora Cabins, each of which has a north-facing, tepee-shaped glass roof (with heated glass ensuring that snowfall won’t obstruct your all-important view) underneath which you can lie back in bed and gaze directly into the night sky. Similarly, around 6km from the centre of Levi and set in its own piece of wilderness, Levi Northern Lights Village offers 40 Aurora Cabins.

he Aurora Domes at Torassieppi in Finland are a truly remarkable purposebuilt glamping design. Effectively large yurt-like structures, they have been adapted to their Arctic surroundings and provide guests with an ideal view of nature’s greatest light show. Echoing a traditional igloo design with their circular shape, each has a double bed and small seating area overlooking a transparent wall through which the night sky can be viewed. Each has a wood burning stove which is further complemented by soft lighting, reindeer skins and blankets ensuring a beautifully cosy retreat. Similar in design (and new for 2020) are the Wilderness Camp Tamok Aurora Domes in Norway, set deep in the Norwegian wilderness and surrounded by mountains and valleys. These domes provide the perfect setting to escape the light pollution of the city and search the dark skies for the Northern Lights.

he Aurora 360 Cabins at Apukka are at the forefront of innovative design, showcasing a completely different construction than other destinations. The beautiful design is based on a Komsio (a traditional Sámi cradle) and gives a nod to its natural surroundings with traditional Sámi furnishings. Featuring two tiers, the boutique cabin offers both privacy and a high vantage point for seeking Aurorafilled skies. The top-floor-bedroom has 360°-degree views via its glass ceiling and windows, and at night you have an ideal view of the sky and any potential Northern Lights displays.

Arctic Bath Hotel

T

he perfect option for those looking for an extra special upgrade, the Arctic Bath Hotel in Sweden is a true reflection of the innovative design that the country is so well known for. Part wellness hotel, part architectural wonder, it is designed to float on the stunning Lule River during the summer and freeze in place throughout the winter.

From one of their land cabins amongst the trees, you will have the advantage of a huge glass wall offering views of the sky and idyllic snow-topped scenery. At night, of course, this window offers you the ability to look directly out into the sky, keeping an eye out for Northern Lights displays (you may have to leave your bed to see the sky in full, but you can still keep cosy inside the cabin).

Arctic Fox Igloo

G

oing one step further, the stunningly designed Arctic Fox Igloos on the shores of the lake Ranuanjärvi offer panoramic glass walls, giving you an incredible, unobstructed view of both the surrounding wilderness and the Arctic sky. Heated panels prevent the windows from frosting over or being covered with snow and each has a private sauna for some relaxing escapism from the Arctic cold.
