arch marks the start of spring, which for some people always means spring cleaning – not usually us, however. In this issue we are focusing heavily on reviving our interiors, with a huge section devoted to everything about the home, and for the first time we're also quite excited about spring cleaning. Partly because of all the lifechangingly high tech vacuum cleaners we've been testing, but mostly because of the fast-growing world of eco cleaning products revolutionising the way we choose and use them. There's no excuse for buying brands that don't consider compostible wrapping, refillable bottles, returnable packaging and just no packaging. We look at all of these in our HOME section, alongside many more glamorous subjects including lighting design, kitchen aesthetics and beautiful rugs. We also look at several new home renovation projects, investigate how to make the best domestic coffee and choose some stylish kitchen storage. Elsewhere we focus on ceramics, healthcare and how to gain instagram followers. Enjoy the issue.

aking place once again in the grand setting of Central Saint Martins’ concourse, Ceramic Art London is the place to see and buy the best contemporary ceramic art made by 110 of the most prestigious makers from around the world. With price points ranging from £20 – £5000, this year’s edition will see an expanded snapshot of contemporary ceramic making, from the functional and decorative to the abstract and architectural. Among the 34 first-time exhibitors are Irina Razumovskaya, whose textural sculptures create the illusion of peeling bark, Hassakorn Hirunsirichoke with his intricate and alienesque miniature forms and, from Canada, Toni Losey whose work embraces both the functional and sculptural. Returning makers include Tricia Thom, with her Japanese-inspired porcelain works, Arjan Van Dal, whose engineering background is reflected in ultra-contemporary designs and Lisa Hammond, whose alchemic mastery of soda glaze firing transforms the simple forms of her mugs and vases. Animals and nature are a recurring theme, from Charlotte Pack’s Species Pots to Barbara Hast’s plant-inspired porcelain curiosities and Zoe Whiteside’s white stoneware polar bears. Programmed in partnership with Central Saint Martins, ClayTalks returns with a series of illuminat-

ing talks given by prestigious names from the ceramic world. This year’s highlights include a keynote from lauded ceramicist Magdalene Odundo OBE and Sue Pryke who, as well as being a major designer for IKEA, was recently announced as a judge on the next series of The Great Pottery Throw Down airing on Channel 4 in 2020. Past speakers have included Tristram Hunt, Kate Malone, Keith Brymer-Jones, Grayson Perry and Phoebe Cummings among many others. Toby Brundin, Business Manager of the Craft Potters Association, said: “Year on year we have a growing number of exhibitors eager to show and more visitors wanting to attend, so we’re delighted to announce a major expansion for 2020. The extended space – which sees the fair spread into the dramatic setting of Central Saint Martins ‘crossing’ – allows us to increase the breadth of artists we profile, tapping into areas of the ceramics landscape that we had previously been unable to showcase.”

ABSOLUTELY reviews… LESLEY MANVILLE AS CLAIRE ZACHANASSIAN PHOTOGRAPH BY JOHAN PERSSON

“What she wants is justice – she has even brought a coffin”

The VISIT

A new adaptation of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's classic play at the Olivier By PENDLE HARTE

T

ransposed from an unidentified central European location called Guellen to the equally unpromising-sounding Slurry in port-war America, this production reimagines Durrenmatt's original morality play. Subtitled The Old Lady Comes to Call, it's a tale of revenge and greed, of collective action, time passing and the effects of poverty on ethics, community and humanity, newly adapted by American dramatist Tony Kushner. We open at a railway station: this is Slurry, depressed, economically inactive, nowheresville – but former home to the enormously wealthy Claire Zachanassian

18

(Lesley Manville), whose imminent visit is highly anticipated. "We're alive only in the sense that moss and litchen are alive," says one of the older residents. The mayor enlists the help of her former boyfriend, Alfred Ill (Huge Weaving) – from 40 years ago – in planning to ask her to donate to the town's coffers, but when she arrives, appearing from an impressive cloud of steam, it's clear that she has a different agenda. Her proposal is to donate a billion dollars to the town – a billion dollars! – on one condition: she wants the townspeople to murder Ill. She has even brought a coffin. Her grudge? He abandoned her while pregnant, having recruited others to testify against her in court and deny his paternity 40 years ago. What she wants is "justice," something

which she is certain can be bought. The offer is publicly refused by the mayor – but shopkeeper Ill's suspicions are raised when a new financial confidence enters the town. Everyone is buying new shoes and opening credit accounts. Even his own family shop is taken over and generously restocked with 1950s consumer desirables. Eventually, the inevitable happens. It's a stylish production, beautifully designed by Vicki Mortimer and with lavish costumes and a slick jazz sountrack, but there's no reason for it to take three and a half hours – apart from that watching Lesly Manville is a delight.

TASTING NOTES

London’s food news and most exciting openings this month By ABBIE SCHOFIELD

By BERRY BROS. & RUDD

2018 Berry Bros.& Rudd Côtes du Rhône Rouge by Rémi Pouizin  £11.95 This wine has been specially made for us by Rémi Pouizin, the talented owner of Domaine Dieu-le-Fit. Made with exclusively organic grapes, the wine displays real purity of dark-berried fruit, with subtle spicy notes and a black-olive twist.

2018 Berry Bros. & Rudd Albariño by Bodegas Sucesores de Benito Santos  £11.95 We have worked closely with the team at Benitos Santos to source a fresh, vibrant wine with delicate white peach fruit and a gentle floral character. The texture is round, but this has a wonderful saline note with a lovely lipsmacking, citrus-pith finish.

2015 Viña Amézola Crianza, Rioja, Bodegas Amézola de la Mora, Spain  £15.95 Medium ruby in colour, this Crianza has really good structure. Fine-grained tannins are complemented by oozing dark blackberry and lifted by red fruit freshness. Aged for 15 months in oak, it has hints of vanilla spice and nutmeg. BERRY BROS. & RUDD Berry Bros. & Rudd is Britain's oldest wine and spirit merchant, having traded from the same shop since 1698. Today the company also has offices in Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, a Wine School and an exclusive fine wine and dining venue in St James's.

ABSOLUTELY eats out…

“Like being in a grand house party thrown by a real English eccentric”

THE PARADISE

FOOD Classy, creative fare

This Kensal Green eaterie remains a Sunday lunch favourite

P

B y PENDLE HARTE

aradise by Way of Kensal Green, with its decaying glamour vibe – all peeling plaster, velvet drapes and oversized chandeliers – is a reassuringly welcoming place. It’s been here for ages, it never changes – at least not dramatically – and you can count on revisiting the same louche, bohemian feel. The sprawling pub features lots of separate spaces, so you slightly feel as if you’re in a grand country house party thrown by an English eccentric, as imagined

DECOR Faded glamour meets luxe comfort

by Hollywood. In a good way. The kitchen, however, does reinvent itself at regular intervals, though only ever to improve its offering. So the new chef’s Sunday lunch menu is probably the best one yet, classic and simple yet full of appealing details. You can order a group roast, and there are small portions of everything for children (as well as a standard kids’ menu for the more demanding). It’s a comfortable place to spend a Sunday afternoon and the well-stocked bar offers all the gin cocktails you could want, though for us it was Pinot Noir all the way.

PRICE Mains £14- £23

We started with burrata with tomatoes, basil and herb oil which came with unseasonably delicious, almost crispy and slightly green tomatoes and brilliantly creamy cheese, and grilled octopus with kimchi salad and Korean sauce, which was stylish and tasty. The mains were showstoppingly good, even just for the outrageous size of the Yorkshire puddings. My slow-roast lamb rump was tender, silky and juicy, and a mountain of vegetables included proper roast potatoes, cauliflower, greens, parsnips, carrot puree and red wine gravy. My partner greedily ordered a ‘mixed roast’ of essentially all the meat except lamb. So there was roast beef, pork belly and chicken with sausage stuffing, plus the aforementioned mountain of vegetables. It defeated even him, but what’s Sunday lunch for if not large portions? For pudding there was fairly standard tiramisu, though the next table’s sticky tofee pudding looked amazing. Paradise: we will always love you. PA R A D I S E B Y WAY OF KENSAL GREEN

VERDICT Stylish, reliable, fun

new one-of-a kind cocktail experience has come to the capital in the form of the Cocktail Time Machine. From the brains behind luxury train dining experience The Murdér Express, Funicular Productions promises their latest venture will be an unmissable event. East London’s Timeless Bar takes guests back in time and space to enjoy some of the world’s greatest cocktails at the moment of their inception. The 75-minute experience transports visitors through three decades and countries via three different, delicious, era-defining cocktails. Once the time machine returns guests back to the present they can celebrate it ‘always being happy hour somewhere’ with two for one cocktails from open until close daily. In keeping with the theme, timeless classics will also be served from the kitchen with a mouth-watering menu created by Masterchef finalist Louisa Ellis. Snacks range from whipped cod’s roe potato skins to sage risotto with thyme and cultured cream, plus slow-cooked beef with tarragon gravy. Our favourites? The crispy garlic potato rosti and the rich black garlic and truffle gnocchi dish. Whether you’re a fan of quirky nights out or want an all-day happy hour, this new nightlife destination is definitely worth your time. TIMELESS BAR Sidworth Street, E8 3SD;

Pan-Fried Asparagus With Soy And Sesame

Asparagus, although a relative newcomer to Japanese cuisine, is loved for its taste and prized for its tantalizingly short season. Serves 4

INGREDIENTS • 12–16 asparagus spears • 2 tablespoons sake • 1 teaspoon toasted white • sesame seeds to serve

METHOD 1 Asparagus has a natural breaking point below which it is stringy and inedible – hold a spear between your hands then bend until it breaks, and discard the lower part. Cut each trimmed spear on the diagonal into 4cm (1½in) length pieces. 2 Heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the thicker pieces of asparagus first, followed by the rest, shaking the pan to toss, and cook for 2–3 minutes. Add the sake and 2 teaspoons of dark soy sauce and continue to cook while still shaking the pan until most of the liquid has evaporated. 3 Portion on to four plates, then sprinkle the sesame seeds over and serve.

Tokyo Roll

This is a Japanese variation on the Swiss roll. Serves 6-8

INGREDIENTS • 100g (3 and ½ oz) caster sugar, plus extra for dusting and dredging • 100g (3 and ½ oz) plain flour, plus extra for dusting • 10g (1/4 oz) matcha (green tea powder) • 4 large eggs • 200ml (7fl oz) double cream • 100g (3 and ½ oz) koshi-an (smooth sweet adzuki bean paste) • Icing sugar, for dusting

METHOD Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4. Grease and line a 33 x 23cm (13 x 9in) 1

2 Swiss roll tin with nonstick baking paper. Dust with a half-and-half mixture of caster sugar and flour.

Mix the flour with the green tea powder and sift 2–3 times. 3

4 Put the eggs and sugar in a bowl, place over a pan of simmering water and whisk, using an electric hand whisk, until pale, creamy and thick enough to leave a trail on the surface when the whisk is lifted. 5 Remove the egg mixture from the heat, then sift half the green tea-flour mixture over and gently fold in with a metal spoon. Repeat with the remaining green tea-flour mixture, then lightly stir in 1 tablespoon of hot water. 6 Pour the mixture into the prepared tin, then tilt the tin backwards and forwards to

spread the mixture evenly. Bake for 10–12 minutes, until well risen and firm to the touch. 7 Meanwhile, place a large sheet of greaseproof paper on top of a clean, damp tea towel. Dredge the paper thickly with caster sugar. 8 Working quickly, turn out the sponge on to the paper, trim off the crusty edges and let it cool down. While the cake is cooling down, whisk the cream until soft peaks form. Spread the cream over the cake and make a line of adzuki bean paste along the long edge nearest to you. 9 Roll up the cake, starting from the long edge with the paste on, with the aid of the paper. Make the first turn firmly so that the whole cake will roll evenly and have a good shape when finished, but roll more lightly after the first turn. Place the cake, seam-side down, on a chopping board, dust with icing sugar, then slice and serve.

Tofu and Wakame Miso soup Among countless variations of miso soups this is an absolute classic, especially for breakfast. You could consider it Japan’s equivalent of Marmite on toast. Serves 4

INGREDIENTS • 20g (3/4oz) dried wakame • 200g (7oz) tofu (either silken or firm) • 1 heaped tablespoon light-coloured miso • 2 spring onions, finely chopped on the diagonal, to garnish

METHOD 1 Soak the dried wakame in 4 tablespoons of warm water for 10–15 minutes and drain. 2 Meanwhile, to drain the tofu, wrap it in kitchen paper, microwave (800W) for 2 minutes, then cut into 1cm (½in) cubes.

3 Pour 800ml (28fl oz) of Primary Dashi, Secondary Dashi or Vegetarian Dashi into a saucepan and bring to the boil over a medium-high heat. Put the miso pastes in a small bowl and mix well, then add a ladleful of dashi from the pot to soften. 4 The soup must be served hot, so warm four soup bowls with hot (not boiling) water. 5 Add the wakame, tofu and miso mixture to the pan and let the soup return to the boil for a few seconds, then turn off the heat immediately. (Never let the miso soup reach a rapid boil as it will spoil the flavour.) 6 Ladle into the warmed bowls, garnish with the spring onions and serve immediately.

Q&A

For the

GRAM Absolutely takes Instagram advice from PR consultant-turned-fashion influencer Marie Louise Pumfrey Interview P E N D L E H A R T E

Q What first attracted you to Instagram? A I’m a PR consultant so Instagram was

on my radar very early on. I spotted the explosion about four years ago with fashion bloggers moving across to Instagram and decided to have a go – so I rebranded my work account to @MrsMLMode for two reasons. Firstly to understand how Instagram works for business and secondly to try working as a fashion influencer, sharing my style and outfits.

Q And what do you like about it? A It’s very entertaining! I love scrolling and

getting fashion, food and general lifestyle inspiration. It’s excellent for spotting trends and moods too. I most love how many people and great connections I’ve made. You have to remember that it’s a social platform which should be fun.

Q Describe your personal style A I’m a jeans and blazer girl. I love a good

pair of trousers and a statement belt. My daily style is classic and – I’d like to say – chic! You can’t go wrong with a statement coat and an investment handbag.

Q Can you list three tips for

aspiring instagrammers?

1. Spend time on your strategy and define

your goals and what success looks like. Are you a business wanting sales, or is it more for a personal profile and networking? Get this clear and you’re halfway there.

2. Work on getting your profile right. You’ve

got 150 characters to play with so make sure your message is loud and clear.

3. Look at your competitors or others in your sector. What do they do well? Take inspiration from great content, stories, hashtags and captions.

FASHION • PROFILE

Q And anything you definitely

SHOULDN'T do on instagram?

A Don’t post bad quality pictures on

your grid. If in doubt don’t post! You can always share on Stories. And never be tempted to buy followers or likes.

Q Your instagram courses – how did they

come about and do you enjoy them?

A As a communications expert I realised

how important Instagram is for businesses. So when I went through the rebranding process of my personal account, I realised how many people were struggling to get to grips with it. I developed a three-hour masterclass with a friend, based on my own experience and lots of research. I tested it on a few close friends initially who loved it so much, they spread the word and I’ve been running the masterclasses ever since. I like to keep them small, with about 12 – 14 people, and I tend to do them once a month. Instagram is continually changing and launching new features and I’m always learning.

“There should be no bad pictures on your grid. If in doubt, don't post”

Q What are your favourite

accounts to follow?

A There are so many but

here are my top five:

1. Atthatisshe – a total creative genius, creative duo. Just brilliant. 2. Astylejournal – features great outfit posts from all over the world. 3. Glowcation – great for everything plant based and vegan. 4. GettheGloss – for everything beauty and wellness. 5. Morethanjustlistening – packed full of mindful tips from west Londonbased psychologist Fiona Austin. Q And your favourite designers? A Isabel Marant, Madeleine Thompson

cashmere and I’m currently obsessed by the accessories brand Wandler. I recently invested in one of their bags in the Matches sale and love it.

I

By ABBIE SCHOFIELD

t’s a dreary winter morning when I visit Harrods beauty hall to investigate the DG Beauty retail space, Casa. It draws on Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s Italian roots to capture the vibe of a traditional Sicilian home, and it’s like stepping into summer: vibrant Mediterraneanstyle ornaments in sunny yellow and cobalt blue adorn the makeup and fragrance counters next to custom-upholstered armchairs and plush rugs in the iconic D&G print. Casa provides the perfect backdrop for DG Beauty’s Velvet Collection, a series of 18 perfumes categorised into three themes: Mediterranean, Oriental and Designers’ Memories. The Mediterranean fragrances evoke a sweet Sicilian summer by way of lemon, bergamot and precious mimosa blossom, inspired by the Italian countryside. By contrast, the Oriental collection is warmer and heavier, reminiscent of Middle Eastern ouds with notes of musk, amber and sandalwood. Finally, the Designers’ Memories fragrances are all connected to the personal history of Domenico and Stefano; Velvet Patchouli hails from the first fragrance Domenico wore as his signature scent, whilst Velvet Love pays homage to the carnations of Lake Como, where the pair have fond holiday memories. Warmth nostalgia characterises The Velvet Collection, and Casa itself, which is well worth a visit. HARRODS Ground Floor Beauty Hall (Hans Crescent Entrance), SW1X 7XL;

atie White of Re:Lax is an experienced cosmetic acupuncturist and her Signature Facial combines cosmetic and auricular (ear) acupuncture, LED light therapy, reflexology, lymphatic drainage and high frequency therapy. Starting with auricular acupuncture, which is said to help all sorts from anxiety to addiciton recovery, the session begins painlessly, except for the small occasional twinge, Next is the cosmetic acupuncture, which promises to regenerate the skin through a micro-wound healing response. With needles nestled in my dermis like a porcupine, my face is bathed in an LED light to help tackle acne, reduce inflammation and kill bacteria. During this, Katie gives my feet a relaxing reflexology massage to enhance the energy enhancing flow of qi — a traditional Chinese medicine practice. Once the needles are out, Katie performs a lymphatic drainage massage which leaves me feeling more sculpted and my cheekbones sharpened. With 10 minutes to spare, Katie slathers my skin in a serum and begins the high frequency treatment which uses electrical pulses to renew skin cells. The facial is a brilliant blend of holistic wellness and scientific seriousness, and it leaves my skin feeling and looking completely revitalised.

vicenna, named after the Islamic philosopher and physician Bin Sina, is a Marylebone clinic specialising in aesthetic treatments using high-performance medical products. It couples the latest technology with an Instagrammable clinic: marble surfaces, plush millennial pink chairs and gold hardware which makes for a modern and stylish atmosphere. The express hydrafacial promises to deeply cleanse the face and help tackle oily and spot-prone skin in just 30 minutes. The aesthetician works her magic, beginning with detoxifying lymphatic drainage followed by extractions and exfoliation. Next, nutrient-rich serums containing the likes of hyaluronic acid, peptides and antioxidants are pumped into the skin to deliver a glowing complexion. It’s a medical-grade facial, but Avicenna does its best to make the treatment as relaxing as possible — I'm immensely pleased with the results. £120; avicennawellbeing.com

GYMS TO TRY THIS MONTH

hooping and cheering is fully encouraged at Dan’s. It’s the end of the session, and along with half the group, I’m about to perform the Reggaeton dance routine I’ve just learned in front of the rest of the class. But it’s a lot less nerve wracking than it sounds – everyone starts clapping and jumping in support whilst the instructor guides us, encouraging us to keep our energy levels high for the final ten minutes of class. The atmosphere is electric. This is what Dan’s, the Latin American dance-fitness studio just

off Regent’s Street, is all about high-energy, exciting classes that combine sassy dance moves with fitness exercises, all to vibrant Latin American beats. It’s so fun that it almost feels like you’re not working out - almost. Thanks to the use of resistance bands and dumbells, you do feel the burn, and amongst the body rolls, booty shakes and chest pops, there are squats, lunges and crunches too. But you’d be wrong in thinking Dan’s is for only great dancers. There are people of all abilities in the class and enthusiasm is praised more than perfecting the moves. Although it’s easy to get into the

spirit of things because Dan’s looks and feels like a nightclub: colourful murals adorn the walls, the music pumps and the lights even change and flash throughout the class. Dan’s recognises that gyms also have a social pull and encourages guests to stick around upstairs at Dan’s Rhythm Bar, a café serving post-workout juices, teas and protein shakes. With three types of classes on offer, Dan’s Fitness (dance workout), Dan’s Soul (meditative dance classes) and Dan’s School (more technical lessons) the studio has something for everyone and is the perfect endorphin-boosting workout to welcome the spring. 5 Cavendish Place, W1G 0QA; dans.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY. “We need to openly address the obvious link between workplace pressure and mental health”

BREAKING THE TABOO

STRESS A N D STAY I N G AT T H E TO P O F YO U R G A M E Bupa Global research reveals two thirds of business leaders have suffered from mental health conditions

I

n today’s dynamic business environment, the job of a senior leader has never been more rewarding, yet demanding. Today’s ‘always on’ culture means that senior leaders are now expected to take on more responsibility for their businesses than ever before. It’s therefore no surprise to see that, when international private health insurer Bupa Global conducted research into senior business leaders’ stress, 63% said they have suffered from mental health conditions.

58% of respondents said they felt it was harder for leaders to talk about mental health. And a quarter of people felt less supported around the issue of mental health since becoming more senior. Patrick Watt, Commercial Director, Bupa Global, said: “Business leaders are not immune to mental health challenges, and in some cases can be especially vulnerable. Pressures that come with the job, such as frequent travel and being away from family, can be overwhelming. “In addition, there’s a worrying association between mental health and inability to lead, which makes the topic taboo. We need to openly address the obvious link between workplace pressure and mental health, challenge perceptions around mental health and leadership, and ensure that there are a range of services available to support senior people.”

THAT’S WHERE BUPA GLOBAL COMES IN

The good news is that the research also found that nearly half (46%) of businesses already have some kind of formal system in place, such as counselling, helplines or stress awareness workshops. Ensuring that these kinds of effective support systems are in place can have huge benefits for both businesses and staff. Bupa Global supports health in both body and mind with plans designed for people who want access to premium healthcare, with global coverage and day-today support. Annual health and wellbeing checks can help the international businessperson live their best life, at home and abroad. Spring CLEANSE Detox and raw food expert Tenna Annette and Angelina Riccio, co-founders of Purearth, on how to do a nourishing gut cleanse

J

uice cleansing is by far the quickest, safest and most effective way to detox, helping the body absorb nutrients whilst disposing toxic residues and kickstarting the autolysis process. We wanted to create a gut cleanse based on similar principles, but more directed for someone new to cleansing wanting to improve their gut health with a combination of juicing and probiotic foods. The detox symptoms are less but the results are great and can be longlasting if followed by a diet including a variety of pre- and probiotic foods. 1 PRE- AND PROBIOTIC S ARE YOUR BE ST FRIENDS

In the trendy ‘gut health’ world, you have probably heard the term ‘microbiome’ around, but what actually is a microbiome? A microbiome is the unique community of microorganisms which inhabit an

HEALTH & BEAUTY • NUTRITION

“To really connect with our food, we need to use all our senses” environment – in this case, your gut. When these microorganisms are not happy, we experience microbial imbalance – also known as dysbiosis – which can result in a range of symptoms from bloating, diarrhoea and constipation to frequent illness, acne and even low mood. Prebiotics feed the good bacteria already present in your gut and probiotics add new beneficial bacteria. Both are essential and provide nutrient fuel to retain balance and diversity in the gut. Alongside a clean, healthy diet, it is also important to support your microbiome with high quality sources of gut-loving pre and probiotics to feed the healthy bacteria and add to the microbial diversity in the gut microbiome. 2 PRACTISE MINDFUL EATING

In our busy modern lives, we often forget the importance of slowing down, and this is especially true when it comes to consuming our food. It takes about 20 minutes for the body to send its satiation signal, which can often cause mindless overeating. By eating more slowly, we can help our mind and body to communicate better about our appetite. Eating and chewing food properly doesn’t simply involve tasting it. To really

connect with our food, we need to use all of our senses; immerse yourself in the smell, texture and visual stimulation. Eat in a peaceful and quiet space where you can enjoy and relax. You will be surprised how eating mindfully and intuitively can have a positive effect on your gut health. 3 DON’ T FORGET ABOUT YOUR GENERAL WELLBEING

With our programme we also wanted to introduce a few tips to improve general wellbeing, outside of diet, which are just as important but often forgotten about, unfortunately. Of course, we love to rave about the effects of practising breathing techniques and moving your body (especially with mindful exercise such as yoga) to reduce stress levels, as well as instilling good sleeping habits (this means switching off from devices before bed, sorry!). All of these in combination with a nutrient-rich, varied diet packed with gut-loving pre and probiotics will leave your gut balanced, and you feeling much happier, healthier and more energetic. MEDICAL PEDICURE

pedicure is mostly about choosing a pretty toenail colour, right? Don’t say that to Margaret Dabbs. Widely known as London’s foot expert, Dabbs’ pioneering Medical Pedicure might not result in pretty toenails, but that’s not the main focus. This is 45 minutes of foot care from a trained podiatrist who’s much more interested in foot health than polish shades. Downstairs in the New Cavendish Street site, my feet are inspected critically before being tackled with a series of sharp implements – no soaking first because this is an entirely dry treatment. Cutting back thin layers of skin that grow imperceptibly over my toes results in – as they promise it will – my toes feeling somehow looser and lighter in my shoes, while a fierce filing of the entire foot removes all dry skin. Any corns and calluses would have been removed, had I had any, and I’m advised that I could benefit from a gait analysis because apparently I "don’t walk well". My nails are shaped and buffed to an improbable shine and my feet look neat, hydrated and soft. My feet feel and look so good that it’s a shame to hide them away under socks.

T

he Khera-Griggs Cleanse Clinic at Urban Retreat offers everything from food intolerance tests to facial reflexology. I opt for manual lymphatic drainage with cupping, designed to drain the lymphatic system (a network of tissues and organs that deal with the body's waste) and reduce bloating, tackle cellulite and digestive issues, improve circulation and detoxification. The therapist presses and massages each part of my body with a fragrant oil before soft, malleable silicone cups are used to create more pressure and a firmer massage - unlike glass cups, they don’t leave marks on the skin. For the most part, it’s relaxing but when the therapist reaches the back of my thighs it’s quite uncomfortable. “You have some blockage here,” she tells me, and as she works the area it really feels like she’s moving my insides around. After an hour, the tension and bloating I was feeling in my stomach and legs has dissipated and I’m considerably more relaxed. 60 mins, £150; urbanretreat.co.uk

Elnaz Namaki is a designer with a fundamental understanding of how buildings work. Absolutely meets her

E

Words P E N D L E H A R T E

lnaz Namaki doesn’t like the label ‘interior designer’. It just doesn’t describe someone whose background is a BSc in Project Management for Construction and who’s just as interested in where the pipes should go as in what colour the curtains should be. An interior designer spends time at Chelsea Harbour choosing fabrics, while a lot of Namaki’s work takes place on building sites. She’s still very glamorous though, and clever. ‘So I’m a cross between a designer and an architect and a construction person,’ she says. Namaki and her business partner Hugo van Bilderbeek run a streamlined business in complete house refurbishments, including a property search service. They’ll find houses for their clients and then

r N

S

strip them back to create luxurious contemporary residences, navigating planning and managing the entire project, from conception to moving in. They’ll take care of floorplans, extensions, moodboards, lighting design and joinery – and they’ll make sure that all the sockets and switches are in the right place too. Their vision is a complete transformation. Taking on a house refurbishment can be daunting. Even if you do have a vision, knowing how to realise it doesn’t necessarily follow. Hiring a fleet of architects and builders can be time-consuming and costly; Namaki’s point makes sense – she says that their teams are used to working together and their processes are fast and efficient. Right now, for instance, they are working on a house in Notting Hill for clients who are based abroad, and they started before the sale had even been finalised, working fast to pass the plans through planning and have the entire refurbishment completed in less than a year. “When you hear people saying that their houses took three years, it’s because of the traditional layered and bureaucratic ways of working. Where moving a socket 200mm to the left requires a string of emails between the architect and the client. We won’t do that - we’ll be on site and just get the socket moved. On traditional sites the builder and the designer are at war, but we work as a team,” she says. Namaki can work to a wide range of briefs, but she has signature elements that she’ll always A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

incorporate, her core trademarks. Ceiling height, for instance, is something she insists on maximising. Old houses will often have enormous firehoods behind ceiling lights – and it’s easy enough to strip them away and gain probably 15cm. Doors too – she’ll raise the frame and install a taller door. She fully believes in creating “that solid new feeling” which only comes from stripping a house back and redoing the infrastructure. Underfloor heating is a crucial part of the luxe feel – “you take your shoes off and immediately relax when the floor is warm” – as is lighting, which needs to create a cosy feel while allowing for flexibility, so all spotlights are carefully placed and furnished with warm bulbs on dimmers. All the unseen parts are critical, and considered right at the start. “It’s important to make all the right decisions at every point before it’s too late. We integrate everything. With lighting, for instance, you need to consider everything very early on if you want lighting in niches and under shelves.” Namaki used to work with lighting designers but decided instead to learn how to do it all herself, because her entire approach is technical and precision-focused. Another detail she cares about is sound – ensuring that doors are thick enough to stop sound from travelling is another way to create a luxurious feel, particularly when considering utility rooms housing noisy appliances. Listening to your washing machine is never a lifestyle choice. The pictured recent project in Kensington went on to break all sales records for its street. It was an unusual house, taller than its neighbours and unusual, with an Art Nouveau style that hadn’t been touched over the years. Inside, they reconfigured

That solid, new feeling only comes from stripping a house back and redoing the infrastructure

the entire layout, which was lacking in natural light and divided into lots of little rooms around a central staircase. Changing the style and location of the windows opened up the space and the final result was an impressive contemporary home featuring all of Namaki’s signature design features. Finer details include a top floor shower with a skylight over it and blue pencil tiles that echo the colour of the sky, as well as an impressive new basement with a light feeling. So where to begin? For Namaki, good design goes beyond what you can see. She’ll embark on a project by first considering the floorplan and planning the space (“we see it really quickly; initial concepts take about 10 minutes) and next – perhaps surprisingly – it’s the lighting, because for it to be integrated it needs to be part of the plans. This will mean that

decisions about where the furniture should go also need to be made early on, so that wall lights will be in the right places. And then it’s plumbing. “The services are the most important things. They’re the core. I think good design is being able to hide services. Have you noticed where my air conditioning is? No – because it’s hidden.” All this technical knowledge goes alongside a strong sense of design, as illustrated by Namaki’s various collaborative projects. She has worked with Art et Floritude on a beautiful lighting collection, and with Luuna on an impressive range of shearling furniture, showcased in her residential projects. Expect to hear more about her.

hen you live in a small space, everything has to be considered. Is there enough room for a bedside table or would a shelf work instead? Wouldn’t it be good if all the things that collect on the coffee table could be stored in a drawer underneath the table? Small space living is no friend of clutter, but cleverly designed furniture and storage can prevent a room from looking and feeling overly crowded. When lawyer Sallie Agnihotri moved into her ‘postage stamp-sized’ flat in Greenwich south London in 2015, she was in need of ‘petite furniture basics’. Frustrated at the lack of available options, she began to design her own, building on a long tradition in the industry as she comes from a family of Devon-based furniture-makers and remembers riding her trike around the factory floor. Sallie started with her floating bedside tables swiftly joined by a floating desk all neat enough to fit in the smallest of spaces. The London Ply collection, which includes bedside tables, a coffee table, desk and hallway console, has the needs of renters and small-space dwellers at its heart.

Each piece has been meticulously designed by Sallie Agnihotri to be compact - the footprint of the products is smaller than most furniture brands, plus each piece has been designed to maximise storage whilst also being beautiful to look at. Sallie says: “I started my business because I was struggling to find small, stylish and well-made furniture for my flat. The first ‘floating’ collection has been very popular but I was conscious that wall-hung furniture is not suitable for people who rent, so this new collection is free standing but also ticks the small-space box. Every detail has been thought through to stream-line the look, for example, the edges are mitred and there are no handles - giving a light and neat appearance which fits perfectly with contemporary living.” All made-by-hand in Europe, the Urbansize ‘London Ply’ range offers great design at affordable prices. Prices start at £150 for the bedside locker and £165 for the hallway console table, rising to £240 for the desk and £315 for the cupboard. All the pieces are made from the highest grade of Baltic birch ply with no inferior wood layers in between, giving a very solid construction and a consistent pale wood finish. Urbansize strives to be an ecologically and ethically responsible company. The plywood in the London Ply range is sourced from sustainably planted forests and its layered construction means it can be made from trees that are not suitable for more solid lumber and might otherwise be discarded. Plywood is incredibly strong but also light making it perfect for urban nomadic living, plus, at the end of its life it is fully recyclable. urbansize.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

elf-taught graphic designer Carmellia Indrawati brings a unique perspective to her work, born from her Indonesian heritage and time spent in Columbia working on various graphic projects with architecture and urban planning companies. Graduating as an interior designer and urban planner, Indonesian-born Carmellia Indrawati, now living in London, has carved a career as a graphic designer after spending time as a freelancer on a range of graphic projects for architecture and urban planning companies. With work including stylised axonometric illustrations and maps and screen printing, Carmellia has a diverse approach to design and a unique perspective to her work. Marmalade was inspired by the architecture of London, particularly the Art Deco cinemas and Tube stations that impressed the Indonesian designer when she first arrived in the city, and blends a 1920s aesthetic with a 1970s retro feel. At once sleek, glamorous and joyful, thanks to its vibrant teal colourway, it’s the perfect eye candy. Carmellia Indrawati says on her Marmalade rug, “Marmalade was inspired by London. The city has a wide range of architectural styles, but Art Deco stood out the most for me when I first arrived; I was floored by the fact that there’s an Art Deco building on almost every corner. I’ve always been attracted to the sleekness and balance that Art Deco architecture embodies.”

Recent recipient of the ‘Hand-knotted Rug of the Year’ at the Wool Carpet and Rug Awards, supported by the Campaign for Wool, Marmalade is ethically handknotted in Nepal by the world’s finest artisan rug makers from a combination of wool and viscose. TOP 3 KITCHEN STORAGE TIPS 02

01 To create a truly streamlined kitchen, consider a breakfast pantry or larder for all your tinned and dry goods, as well as giving you ample storage space for small appliances such as coffee machines and toasters. 02 Make a statement with open shelving. It’s a great kitchen storage alternative if space is at a premium as shelves make smaller spaces feel less cramped. 03 For your everyday items such as crockery, pans and cutlery – keep these at waist height to save yourself from overstretching for the everyday essentials.

DYSO N V 11 ABSOLUTE  The Dyson looks stylish, with its colourful stem and clever digital display that tells you exactly how long you have left – battery life on this is excellent, with an eco setting that lasts even longer. Emptying the canister is ingenious, with a quick release lever rather than an unscrew mechanism. The machine is light, quiet (just under 3kg) and nifty with swivel heads seamlessly manoeuvring under sofas. There are enough attachments to cope with all spaces, plus the option of using it as a handheld. We took great pleasure in cleaning Venetian blinds – with striking results – and the wall bracket includes tidy storage for the additional tools. Who knew cleaning could be this much fun? £599 dyson.co.uk

2 SAMSUNG POWERSTICK JET  This is the only model that comes with a telescopic extending pipe (no back ache for tall people) and also the only one to include a wet mop. The battery is removable, and our sample arrived with an additional battery, which means you can go for longer – though a full charge takes almost four hours. There’s a handy docking station – no need to drill into the wall – and the supercharged suction power makes this a reliable machine. Whether handheld or tacking cobwebs in high ceilings, this is a versatile and reliable tool. £549; samsung.com

obody likes vacuuming. Getting the hoover out of its awkward storage in the cupboard under the stairs is the first challenge, then lugging the hated object to an available plug and coping with tangled cables is enough to make anyone lose the will to live, let alone to vacuum. Our device is temperamental: it cuts out if the cord looks in danger of getting twisted; it falls over if you pull it too vigorously, or at all, and changing the bag is a dusty, horrible job. The battle against fluff and crumbs is ongoing, and with a sub-prime hoover like ours we are frankly never going to win. But there’s a new breed of vacuum cleaners, a world away from what we are used to. Cordless, bagless vacuums are the future, and their promises to make cleaning into an enjoyable activity are far from empty. Here are our top three.

BISSELL ICON 25V  The cheapest of the three, Bissell’s is also the heaviest, but only by a smidge at just over 3kg. It’s a powerful and effective machine. Brilliantly, it lights up to ensure that no piece of dirt goes unnoticed, and its wall mount is discreet and handy. As with all models, vacuuming with a cordless device that’s easily accessed is a different prospect – you’re less likely to hoover the whole house at once and more likely to clean in short, targeted bursts. £349; bissell.com

A INSPIRED by DESIGN Absolutely quizzes Mark Lord, founding director of Lord Architecture on remodelling your home this spring Interview E V E H E R B E R T

s warmer months approach and change is in the air, many seek to remodel, refurbish and revitalise their home. So we turned to architect Mark Lord, founding director of the vibrant studio Lord Architecture, to discuss engaging with the design process and the value an architect can bring to your project. Q Tell us about yourself and your practice, Lord Architecture: A My time living in the cities of Oxford, London and Bath sparked an interest in historic buildings, in particular re-imagining them through the use of modern architecture. Over a decade of working for notable, award-winning architectural practices in London and the west country, I gained a range of experience on prestigious projects of all typologies. However, I found myself drawn towards the home and the human scale. This was compounded when my wife and I bought our first property in London, a Victorian conversion, and took

the opportunity to completely remodel. In March 2017, I established Lord Architecture to focus on my passion for prime residential and heritage projects, with an emphasis on contemporary additions to historic buildings. As the practice celebrates its third year and our portfolio of work continues to grow, we reflect on the real success stories that come from true client engagement: working with the client to formulate their brief and challenging the parameters of residential convention. Q What advice can you give to readers who are considering engaging with an architect: A With the challenges we all face when climbing the property ladder, particularly in the current climate, one of the most advantageous investments we can make is in realising the full potential of our existing property. From a client’s perspective, the key to achieving the most from an architect, and the project, is to remain openminded and allow the initial brief to naturally evolve through open dialogue. Design is not an insular activity and the client’s individuality will often be a key inspiration. A common misconception I have experienced is

The client’s individuality will often be a key inspiration to the design

that a challenging site can be restrictive in terms of design. I have often found that the most innovative design is born of constraint. For example, a listed building, a commercial conversion or a tight residential plot can drive the architect and the client to work together imaginatively within the brief, the budget and the planning system to produce a high-quality project. Q Can you explain the initial timescales involved? A Appointing an architect is often the first step. When deciding who to choose, it is important to review the potential candidate’s body of work, make sure it inspires you and fits with the vision for your project. We advise our clients to obtain a measured survey at inception to ensure accuracy of information. This will serve as the basis for all demolition and proposed drawings. Design timescales beyond the initial appointment can wildly vary depending on the scale of the site and its complexities, however once submitted for planning and validated by the local authority, you can expect an eight week wait for a decision. If approved, the permission will be accompanied by a number of standard and specific conditions. These will be greater for listed buildings or complex proposals and will typically include an expiry date of three years from the decision date. Q What makes a great home? A For me, it is the cohesion of form and function; the creation of a language between the architecture, the interior and the external space.

Where possible, our projects aim to provide a glimpse of the garden upon arrival, creating a sense of intrigue and drawing you from the street, through a series of arranged spaces to the sanctuary of the garden beyond. Q Where do you look to add value? A Typically people approach a project for one of two reasons; the first, to improve their way of life and the second, a monetary investment. The architect is the bridge between the two. As an architectural practice we have built a team of other trusted professionals and have fostered relationships with everyone from town planners and structural engineers to craftsmen and specialist glaziers. At Lord Architecture, we approach every new project with the aim of realising its full potential, involving the client throughout the process and working to create inspirational spaces and beautifully crafted architecture. To celebrate their third birthday, Lord Architecture are offering Absolutely readers a £300 discount on new projects this March. To redeem this offer please send an email to the address below and quote ‘Absolutely’ in the title. @lord_architecture; info@lordarchitecture.co.uk lordarchitecture.co.uk

and industry-leading products, the end result is a property that both invigorates and inspires. Setting the scene upon entrance into the apartment, a bespoke Popham tiled floor creates a striking statement. Positioned against the deep teal hue of the painted walls and woodwork, the tiles are illuminated by an intelligently placed skylight, casting a welcoming glow over the hallway. As a simple yet effective final touch, a velvet curtain was added across the entrance doorway to soften the feel of the space. Leading seamlessly into the new open plan living, kitchen and dining area, the hexagonal geometric tiles were cut into the chevron wooden floorboards in an asymmetric configuration, creating a bold and eye-catching feature. Having removed a corner utility room and knocked down a half-height wall between the kitchen and living areas, the heart of this apartment now stands as a bigger and brighter room. The doorway leading from the hallway was opened up to be as big as possible and the door was cut into the wall, creating an uninterrupted look while ensuring that regulations were met without compromising on aesthetics. Complete with a state-of-the-art Day True kitchen, Carrara marble worktops, AEG appliances, a bespoke dining table and Tom Dixon pendants, the final kitchen and dining area is a functional space filled with personalised character. The use of distinctive finishes, a contemporary pastel palette and bold patterns continues throughout the guest and ensuite bathrooms as well as the master bedroom, delivering a distinctively different yet effortlessly cohesive home. daytrue.com

The Legacy THE HOPTIMIST A Danish design classic Words

THE HAPPY HOPTIMISTS

Gustav Ehrenreich’s happy designs became optimistic classics

HANS GUSTAV EHRENREICH

PENDLE HARTE

T

he Hoptimist is part of the great Danish design family that spans Kay Bojesen’s monkey and the PH lamp. What all the family members have in common is that their design lasts. Still produced in Denmark, the Hoptimist relaunched in 2008 remain true to designer Hans Gustav Ehrenreich’s vision. His basic idea was to draw the Hoptimist using a circle and an ellipse, and the classic and the new generation of figures are based on this idea. Before the Hoptimists saw the light of day, Danish wood turner Hans Gustav Ehrenreich (1917–1984) tinkered in his workshop at his house on Århusvej in Stilling. It was the late 1950s, and in Ehrenreich’s small workshop there was no shortage of imagination. No two things were ever alike. Small silver fish were inlaid in hand-turned bowls and dishes, and one-off pieces of utility art in wood species from all around the world were sold from the workshop. In the late 1960s, Ehrenreich created the first prototypes for Birdie, Bimble and Bumble. Soon, Ehrenreich and his Hoptimists had become too well-known for production to continue in

THE NEW HOPTIMIST LAMP

his small workshop. The rest of the story has become part of Danish design history. In 1968, Ehrenreich began producing mobiles – the famous Birdies. Later, he introduced Bimble and Bumble as well as Kvak, the frog. Ehrenreich participated in several international craft exhibitions, receiving honours both at home in Denmark and abroad. The 1960s might now be known as ‘swinging’, but the decade was actually marked by unrest. Gustav Ehrenreich’s happy designs became optimistic classics. Bright, cheery colours and the round, harmonious expression make the classic Hoptimists an eternal reminder to be positive and optimistic. The Hoptimists were in production up until 1974, before being revived in 2008. The relaunch and further development of these classic figures has been a huge success, and today a wide range of happy Hoptimists is available for every occasion. The figures are still manufactured in Denmark, and the individual parts are carefully assembled by hand. The Hoptimist collection is stocked at The Conran Shop hoptimist.com

“Glamour is becoming just a little more subtle and understated”

W

hat lighting trends do the Juliettes team predict you will be seeing more of in 2020? The first thing to say is that there is an underlying trend for clean, unfussy and pared back design. Alongside this, we are also seeing what we would call Everyday Glamour – inspired by 5 star hotels, we want to recreate the luxury feel by including the same gloss and glamour in our everyday spaces. Colour temperature is also becoming something of a buzzword. In an attempt to combat all the blue light we are exposed to through our gadgets, home lighting is concentrating on warmer LED light to make our spaces cosy, calm, warm and welcoming.

Size Matters

Unless you are considering festoon lights (increasingly popular both indoors and out), bigger is definitely better when it comes to your lighting scheme. Lighting should not be thought of as purely functional – it is a major design element within your home and the trend is for big, brave, bold pieces. This is no time to be timid. Make a feature of your lighting with oversized ceiling lights, statement chandeliers and extravagant table and floor lamps.

Geometric Shapes

This is an interiors-wide trend. You’ll find geometric shapes on wallpapers, curtains, rugs and luxury furniture. When it comes to designer lighting, this means clean lines, minimal decoration and sleek materials. Look out for off-centre asymmetric designs, metallic cages and sharp angles.

Free Form

If hard, geometric lines are not for you, another lighting trend is for more swirling, free-form shapes. There is no symmetry here but designs are still bold and eyecatching. Twisted metals and sculpted ceramics give a fabulous freedom, particularly with floor and table lamps.

Organic Materials

Again, this trend is played out across the whole interior design sphere. Everyone is on the lookout for natural materials, and the world of lighting is no different. In practice, this means a wonderful selection of glass, metal, marble, stone and wood. Combine these with lush linen shades, and you have an on-trend masterpiece.

Soft Finishes

Whether it’s a soft gold, matte black, muted nickel or brushed bronze, finishes seem to be moving away from the ultraglossy designs of previous years. This is not to say that gorgeously shiny, goldplated finishes have gone away, they are simply being used more sparingly. Glamour is becoming just a little bit more subtle and understated.

Gold with Monochrome

While all-out gold lighting may be on the back burner, combine the gold with a simple monochrome scheme of either black or white and it brings your lighting back on trend. Again, it brings an air of subtlety whilst retaining gold’s guaranteed glamour.

Biophilia

Although biophilia means bringing fresh, green foliage into our homes, it has transferred through to our décor in the form of wallpaper, fabrics and upholstery. And now it is moving into luxury lighting, with a whole range of fun and quirky lamps, pendants and even chandeliers, based on big, bold botanicals. We love these fantastic leafy designs but plan your lighting scheme carefully – unless you want it to look like Kew Gardens. A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

form an integral part of the light’s design. Ceiling lights, lamps and chandeliers are all part of the trend.

Architectural and Statement Lamps

This is a continuing trend rather than a new one. Table and floor lamps no longer sit quietly in a corner but have become big, bold statement pieces with plenty of flair and pizzazz. Designs are striking and eye catching. Wherever possible, table lamps belong in pairs, at either end of a sofa, sideboard or mantelpiece. Floor lamps work in pairs or singles, dotted throughout living spaces, dining rooms, bedrooms and hallways. Be bold.

Smart systems

With everything in our homes becoming smarter, our lighting must soon follow. Smart lighting, controlled by voice, app and devices such as Alexa and Google Home, will soon become the norm. The world’s major lighting manufacturers are working hard to embrace and keep up with the ever-improving technology. juliettesinteriors.co.uk

Refined Industrial

Industrial lighting has been with us for a while but we are seeing a more refined approach, with pieces that will work more easily throughout your luxury home. Filament bulbs, tubes and pipework may still be exposed, but styling is more delicate and finishes are sleeker and more luxurious.

Sconces and Wall Lights

“Bigger is definitely better when it comes to lighting”

Sconces and wall lights are often underrated and thought of as functional but uninspiring. Well, not any more. Wall lights are a vital part of any lighting scheme, providing symmetry but also lighting up darker areas and, at the same time, highlighting favourite pieces of luxury furniture and accessories. Choose bold sconces as a design feature in their own right – don’t let them fade into the background.

Spheres

Spheres are unique in the way they can reflect and bounce light around a room. Beautiful spheres in multiple materials and finishes form a stunning base for table and floor lamps. Meanwhile, light bulbs are not just a humble, functional accessory. Instead, exquisite glass orbs A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

his charming townhouse in Marylebone was refurbished by London interior design and architecture practice Red Deer, transforming the apartment into a modern space while staying true to and highlighting its rich history. The exquisite twostorey apartment is part of a Georgian townhouse and brims with layers of history, all of which shine through in Red Deer’s new designs. Stripped back to its shell, revealing layers of history that date back more than 200 years, the property’s Portland Estate 1750s layout underwent various alterations in the early 19th century. Red Deer further developed this layout by removing the bedrooms and cloakroom, narrowing the hallway so as to accommodate two smaller bathrooms. The rustic kitchen was also reorientated in order to create a more open-plan kitchen and an inviting dining space for entertaining and welcoming guests in a warmer environment.

Stripping the property back uncovered more than 200 years of alterations

Original Jacobethan mouldings are coupled with modern plasterwork

Red Deer incorporates the property’s history into their refurbishments, keeping the original Jacobethan mouldings which, coupled with the modern new-classical plasterwork, creates a charming marriage of styles which Red Deer carefully restored. In keeping with the historical aspect of the property, Red Deer also sourced and reinstalled grand period fireplaces as well as reclaimed Douglas Fir floorboards. Built in 1750, the two-bedroom property takes in a ground-floor open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, luxurious bathroom and a spacious master bedroom with ensuite and an outdoor terrace where you can be in touch with nature while the city is just seconds away. It has a modern feel, yet still draws upon the simple pleasure of nature, inviting light in with its large windows and decorating with soft greenery. A calming palette of black, white and grey flows across the property, allowing the clean lines of one-off furniture pieces and brass fittings to shine. Red Deer’s design stays faithful to the building’s character with its distinctive midcentury American feel constructing an interior which is effortlessly elegant and eclectic. reddeer.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY. Their famous ‘Slym Jyms’ are pyjama sets crafted from super soft organic cotton with a touch of elastane for durability and comfort. The cuffs and hems ensure a superhero-style silhouette little will love, and fun designs include monochrom harlequin diamonds and embroidered moons. Even better, the design ensures pj’s won’t ride up at night. There are looser styles, too, fashioned from dreamy, drapey muslin in natural tones and delicate prints. And the entire collection is ethically produced, with the garments produced in European factories with ethical employment policies. Our current favourite is this unique set of Slim Jyms, covered in a fetching feather print with detachable ‘wings’ for little night owls. hink of Brazil and the sprawling city of Rio de Janeiro probably springs to mind, where a population of over 6.7 million wrestles with towering skyscrapers, tropical beaches, heaving favelas and black mountains. But in the north-eastern state of Bahia is a quiet fishing village, home to one of the region’s most spectacular hotels - an oceanside paradise hugged by 12km of white sand surrounded by coconut groves and lush rainforest...

GETTING THERE

With no direct route from London, we travel with TAP Air who offer flights with a stopover in Lisbon, and Tivoli Avenida Liberdadi is a fantastic choice for our outrageously comfortable pitstop. The hotel’s panoramic rooftop bar and restaurant, SEEN, is one of the city’s hottest spots, serving innovative Japanese-fusion dishes alongside killer cocktails. In a whirlwind adventure through the cobbled streets of Libson, we also manage to squeeze in a walking tour, plenty of pastel de natas and shots of ginjinha (local cherry liqueur), before boarding our eight-hour flight to Salvador.

112

T I VO L I E C O R E S O R T PRAIA DO FORTE

Tivoli Ecoresort Praia do Forte immediately embraces us into its oasis of calm; the room has all the natural charm of a beachside hut with the comfortable amenities of a five-star suite. When it comes to decor, natural fibres have been used where possible (the resort forbids aluminium and plastic), from furniture hand-carved by local artisans to decorative sculptures made from coconut shells. Opening the dark wooden shutters reveals a balcony, complete with a hammock and view of the twinkling emerald ocean, palm trees scattered on the horizon. The word ‘eco’ is bandied around a lot nowadays. Much like ‘clean’ and ‘green’, with no official definition of what counts as eco, businesses are co-opting the term to appeal to 2020’s climate-conscious clientele - a hotel will get rid of plastic straws or start using recycled toilet roll and call itself ‘eco’. But Tivoli Ecoresort is different and its efforts to protect the surrounding wildlife are immense. In keeping with the rainforest landscape, the resort is mostly green and brown-hued and buildings cannot be taller than a palm tree. What’s more is the hotel occupies only 20% of the 300 thousand square metres of land that it owns, allowing nature to blossom. In fact, the hotel is so successful in its aim to leave nature undisturbed that animals wander freely around the resort,

including monkeys who live up to their cheeky reputation by hanging around the restaurants, trying to steal food from unsuspecting diners. Staff have developed an amusing deterrent - spraying water at the marmosets, forcing them to scuttle off. Social responsiblity is at the heart of Tivoli Ecoresort: the hotel fully funds the local school, and employs many former students. 70% of its workers are native to the state of Bahia.

FOOD AND DRINK

Due to immigration during the Portuguese Colonial War, Salvador has strong African roots which the resort celebrates in its food, merging the best of Bahaian cuisine with international influences. From Dendê, the lively poolside bar, to À Sombro Do Coqueiral, which overlooks the romantic infinity pool, Tivoli Ecoresort boasts a restaurant for every occasion. Foodie highlights include the acarajé, an award-winning street food-inspired dish made of peeled beans, which we learn how to make via a live cooking demonstration. A must-

There’s plenty to do in the area, like visiting Garcia d’Avila, a 16th century castle and one of the most significant archaeological sites in Brazil. However, one of the most exciting opportunities happens from July to October, when 9,000 humpback whales venture from Antarctica to South America to reproduce. Tivoli takes its guests, accompanied by local biologists, on incredible whale watching excursions, and the resort also supports the Baleia Jubarte institute who study and protect the gentle sea giants. We’re sorry to miss the whalewatching window, but in the village of Praia

do Forte we visit The Tamar Project, a charity which protects sea turtles from extinction on the Brazilian coastline. Turtle-saving done, we head to the hotel’s Anantara spa for some deep relaxation. There's a heavenly tranquil pool, jacuzzi and sauna as well as treatment rooms. There’s adventure to be had, too. An afternoon kayaking along the mangroves of the Timeantube river is a chance to see beautiful wildlife whilst gliding along the red-tinged, iron-rich water. A last-minute decision to go paddleboarding in the sea turns out to be one of the highlights of the trip. Accompanied by our entertaining guides (one of them can do a headstand on his board), some of us get the knack of paddling, whilst others just fall in. Tourism is often accused of damaging the environment. But here, visitors and nature thrive in a prosperous green cycle. Private and secluded with a friendly buzz, Tivoli Ecoresort is a true ecological sanctuary.

ortugal’s sun-kissed southern coast is certainly no secret. Offering the promise to play golf in your shirt sleeves all year round, and with spectacular beaches and seafood, the Algarve has long been a hero destination for those in need of an effortless holiday and a quick dose of vitamin sea. An easy half hour drive from pseudocapital Faro and its airport, is Vilamoura. Located on one of the Algarve’s finest beaches and home to a swanky marina, it’s a modern and sophisticated holiday destination by most standards and where internationally famous Purobeach - made popular by party-goers to the sites in Marbella, Palma and Barcelona - has chosen to set up its latest beach club. The area is a natural choice for Purobeach. Popularity for Vilamoura picked up in the 1980s when it established itself as an elite golfing centre. Today it's arguably the best spot in the Algarve for the sport, with five exceptional golf courses, along with the exclusive marina complex, where million-pound yachts moor and visitors can dine and socialise in spectacular fashion. The area is unlike

most other Portuguese towns with their dilapidated charm - here lie perfect beaches, world-class hotels and an overall glossiness which seduces the rich and famous. While this crowd typically likes to languor in the luxury of it all, a lot can be accomplished in a quick trip. Not least because you can tick off everything from fine dining to pool party at Purobeach. The brand made its name with sizzling summer soirees and effortlessly chic beachside socialising and has seven sites dotted around Spain, with one soon to open in Morocco. Purobeach Vilamoura has two distinct zones: the beachfront and the garden. Visitors can flit between the poolside beds and lush green surroundings of the garden, and the sand, sea and sunbeds on the Atlantic shore. For a livelier vibe, the beachfront is where the club’s resident DJs are set up, playing throughout the day. Both sides have bars and restaurants, with friendly staff more than happy to serve you at your sunbed. On a scorching day, lunch at the beach front is a refreshing affair. The menu features vibrant local dishes like seafood cataplana and fresh fish, as well as international options ranging from Peruvian ceviche to Moroccan tagine. and superfoods also feature heavily. Bar options follow suit with many cocktails created around a wellness angle, as well as there being a long list of vitality-boosting smoothies available. Just the thing to get you back on your feet after the night before. While it’s highly encouraged you let day slip into night in this hedonistic retreat, you can’t actually sleep on a sunbed. However, the Anantara Vilamoura matches Purobeach’s slick service and high-level luxury. The 280room and suite hotel is a sister site to Purobeach, so getting between the two is a doddle – the concierge has a fleet of tuk tuks for hotel guests to do just that. The hotel marks Anantara’s European debut and displays the brand’s signature opulence - grand lobby, marble cladding and columns - alongside its trademark emphasis on local heritage. Artisanal pottery, wicker furniture and Portuguese wines create a real sense of place. The building looks out onto the peaceful, landscaped green of the Arnold Palmerdesigned Victoria golf course, famous for hosting the annual Portugal Masters. As you’d expect, the rooms are extremely comfortable and each comes with a terrace and views onto the golf course, the gardens or the main pool. So-called ‘main’ because there are three others: an indoor pool, another reserved for adults and a kids’ one. Like much of the Algarve, Vilamoura is predictably seasonal - summer represents peak season and from June

“You're highly encouraged to let day slip into night in this hedonistic retreat” to September you’ll find Purobeach and the surrounding shoreline packed with holiday-makers. However, Anantara Vilamoura is ideally situated to explore the traditions and history that shape the Algarve during the cooler months. The resort’s very own experience guru is on hand to get you out into the hillside villages to meet local farmers, basket weavers and schnapps distillers, while a Spice Spoons masterclass offers guests the chance to immerse themselves in the day-to-day of the famous Loulé food market, before

heading into the kitchen with chef to create a collection of traditional dishes. Of course, you’re not expected to do all of the cooking. Between here and Purobeach, guests are spoilt for choice when it comes to dinner, with three more restaurants and a handful of bars to settle down in. Eating at Emo restaurant is one of the more exciting options. Here, Chef Bruno Viegas takes Portugese dishes that are as old as time and modernises them with exceptional flare. The restaurant has established a reputation for delivering one of the Algarve’s most memorable dining experiences, and last year was included in the Wine Spectator Restaurant Awards 2019. The extensive wine cellar contains around 350 expertly selected wines to accompany dishes such as asparagus brûlée and Bacalhau à Brás, a traditional Portuguese dish of salt cod with potato matchsticks. Elsewhere, seafood restaurant Ria offers a traditional menu of fish stews and rice dishes, and Victoria restaurant offers an impressive breakfast of breads, fruits, cold meats and an egg station - it’s certainly worth filling up if another Purobeach pool party is on the cards.

NEWS Sucess stories from the world of education By ELLIE MOSS

OPEN DOOR

Top Notch Chapter House preparatory school has been given a Quality Mark Award for their Early Years provision. The award comes just a year after the school gained the Primary Quality Mark Award for English and Mathematics.

Westonbirt School experienced a significant upturn in demand since announcing it would accept boys. In January, a record number of students tested for entry with fierce competition and exceptional talent among scholarship candidates. Headmistress Natasha Dangerfield said: "The abundance of outdoor space for sports at Westonbirt and our strong extra-curricular programme, well supports a holistic approach to education which benefits all students, regardless of gender.”

M U S I CA L MADNESS The creative skills at Pangbourne College came to the fore recently, with a collaboration between the Drama and Music departments to stage their own version of ‘Grease’. Audiences were transported back to the summer of 1958, and treated to retelling of the much loved musical. Year 10 pupil Phoebe, who played the female lead, said: “My favourite thing about being involved in the production is the sense of community”.

M OV I E M A N I A South Hampstead High School celebrated a huge achievement as a student’s short film won first place in this year’s GDST Short Film Competition. Two of their students secured a place in the final, with Ella’s film exploring the pressures of looking ‘perfect’ (I’m Perfect’) winning the entire competition.

Being Brave

GOING GREEN

Many schools across London recently celebrated Children’s Mental Health Week, focusing on the theme of ‘finding your brave’. A huge amount of awareness was raised by inviting speakers into schools, setting up inclusive workshops and inviting pupils to speak about their own experiences.

North London Collegiate School marked Valentine’s Day by raising awareness for Anti Fast-Fashion February. All students and staff were encouraged to wear their favourite items of clothing from thrift and charity stores.

WHICH SCHOOL?

Calia Brenscson – Van Dyk, president of the EIFA parent association on why she chose to educate her son at an international school

I

t was of the utmost importance that the school we chose shared the same core values as our family: Openness to cultural diversity, emphasis on integration of children while developing their adaptability. We thought it was vital that our son was made to feel welcome both by a teaching team sensitive to the problematic aspect of expatriation, as well as by children growing in similar environments. EIFA International School in Marylebone soon stood out as the obvious choice. We were attracted by EIFA’s genuinely international atmosphere. With more than 40 nationalities represented in its student body and a teaching team bringing a wealth of experience from different horizons, the school’s

richness derives from its openness and varied profile of its families. EIFA has small class sizes, allowing teachers to devote time and attention to each child, creating a truly personalised educational experience and ensuring children settle into their new classes as quickly and gently as possible. At EIFA, communication between parents and teachers flows easily and naturally whether by email, in formal parent-teacher meetings or informally when dropping off/collecting from school. Our perception of our son’s journey is concrete and goes beyond simply reading grade reports. Studying in an international environment helps to guard against any culture shock when moving back to the home country or to a new expat destination. Therefore

“ At EIFA, communication between parents and teachers flows easily and naturally ”

CHILDREN AT EIFA SHARE SIMILAR EXPERIENCES

one of the factors we considered in our choice was how the school would prepare our son to continue his education afterwards. The EIFA curriculum prepares students to sit British and or French exams and, with the school in the process of putting in place the IB Diploma, students will retain the international aspect of their education to the age of 18 and beyond. I am convinced that languages are best learned as young as possible. Being fluent in two or more languages is becoming increasingly advantageous in life today. However, it remains rare to be fully literate in two or more languages at native speaker level without either exposure to the languages from childhood or intensive study. At EIFA, our son is immersed in two languages allowing him to choose his future educational and career pathways from the vast choice on offer in both the French and English-speaking worlds. Furthermore, the international aspect of education at EIFA gives him an openness to and appreciation of different cultures, thus enabling him to adapt to life in any location. We also found at EIFA a true support system between parents, in addition to the support provided by the EIFA team. This has greatly contributed to a smooth relocation and settlement. Even though, it was not one of our priority criteria, we have found that the friendships and relationships established at EIFA have greatly enriched our experience of London.

KID COACHING Gillian Panton writes about the importance of communication for wellbeing

T

hrough the

crunching of a snack following an action-packed afternoon of geography fieldwork, netball squad and computer coding, a parent asks "how was your day, darling?” and a small voice utters a frustratingly underwhelming “Fine.” This familiar response follows us into adulthood and often belies a need to ‘keep on keeping on' despite how we feel inside. Some grew up with the proverb, "A problem shared is a problem halved." However, when children show reluctance to expand on their day, share the worries or the challenges they face, how do we as parents and educators prise open these channels of communication to promote a safe

space to converse, without judgement? Cracking open problems begins with the bubbling of curiosity. The confidence to ask pertinent questions to better understand where each of us ‘is’ reveals a powerful, yet quiet, respect for the other person and their experience. However, it is arguably the space held between the responses that can be revolutionary, producing an ‘Aha’ moment. The power of opening up such types of conversations has seen a remarkable development in the communication skills of pupils at Sydenham High School. Creating a coaching culture, actively chosen to extend beyond the walls of the staff room and into the hands of our pupils in the playground and classrooms alike, has seen a sharpening of focus on the meaning of interdependence. For every pupil to flourish within our school gates, the resolve to respectfully

“Children are always eager to help their friends in times of need and offer supportive words of advice.”

CHILDREN DEVELOP THEIR QUESTIONING AND LISTENING SKILLS

listen to one another, and be heard, is the cornerstone of our pastoral care. As educators, we delight in knowing that the learning has truly ‘stuck’ when we witness the pupil-come-mini-teacher in action, regaling in the joy of sharing their knowledge and supporting others to access the task in hand. It is with this power of the peer, that ‘Kid-Coaching' was devised. Using a structured coaching question model, pupils and staff alike have been developing an awareness of the far-reaching impact of the coaching conversation to support positive growth and self-reflection. The introduction of the ‘Inner Coach’ concept has proved powerful in raising the self-belief and confidence of our pupils. Children are always eager to help their friends in times of need and offer supportive words of advice. It is with this in mind that we encourage the pupils to talk to themselves as they would their best friend. What this reveals is a compassionate, less rigid, fixed response to some of the worries or challenges that crop up in the sometimes choppy waters of school life. A coaching culture equips children with the interpersonal skills to develop their questioning and listening. It also challenges children to reflect on, and uncover, thoughts and considerations they have within a safe space. Communication skills are the bedrock of the future. Being creative, adaptive, and in equal measure, resilient, is no mean feat; however, with the support of family, teachers and peers, unlocking the power of open-ended questioning and self-reflection, through tools such as the Inner Coach, the outcomes for pupils can be far-reaching. By remembering the power of the space between the question and response, perhaps we can support children to take ownership of their choices about how they manage their feelings

THE TEEN YEARS Natasha Dangerfield, headmistress of Westonbirt Senior School on how to manage teenage hopes and fears B y N ATA S H A DA N G E R F I E L D

T

eenage hopes and fears are not something we should be frightened of or worry is an immediate sign of anxiety. There has been considerable research into the teenage brain over the past ten years and psychologists and neuroscientists have discovered that disconnecting neuro pathways play a significant role in changing behaviours during these critical years. It is without doubt, however, that this can be a hurtful time for parents and potentially damaging to family relationships. Through their formative years children are hoping to fly to the moon; to become a sports star; a world leading medic or an actor. Once they reach 13 or 14, they begin making choices about GCSEs, feeling the pressure of coursework and wondering what on earth is going on as their brains undergo significant change. Teenagers are looking for answers and perhaps coming up with responses they do not want to find; realising that maybe they won’t make it to the moon and possibly are set for something other than Broadway. That’s

“Fears are borne out of hope and it is natural for teens to be fearful as they realise that their childhood dreams may not come true” 130

STUDENTS NAVIGATE THEIR OWN EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY

difficult. As parents and teachers, we have to sit alongside teens as they make this journey. It is their rite of passage and it is a difficult one when combined with hormones and social pressures. Fears are borne out of hope and it is natural for teens to be fearful as they realise that maybe we can’t make their childhood dreams come true. We need to think carefully about who they are dealing with and remember that each child will be individual in their approach during this often-difficult time. The students I see on a daily basis are each navigating their personal journey differently. Some are disengaged, others motivated, several have fallen out with

everybody or may actually be right on side. As educators and as parents we have a responsibility to create consistency because that is the one thing teenagers may not find it easy to establish. They may not be able to find their way alone but with you sitting alongside them, telling them that it is OK, making clear that they should not speak to you rudely and that their bedroom floor should not resemble a compost heap but, that actually, you are there for them. Reassuring them you will help to tidy up; that you can sit down and discuss why becoming a movie star perhaps isn’t their best option and that there will be a path that is the right route for them; is a valuable part of their journey and indeed yours too. Sadly, there are a few who will suffer from serious anxiety, for whom fear of failure is so debilitating that they cannot even get through the door in the morning. For those families there is help and working with schools and medical professionals in a triangulated approach will, hopefully, in time allow these young people to also find their way. But for the majority of teenagers, consistency; care; time and space is key. Teenagers need to be empowered and we have to create time and space for that to happen, allowing young people to be teenagers until they discover the adults that they are destined to become. westonbirt.org
